Walxridgeway – Your Outdoor Solution to Exercise and Community
There's no doubt about it: exercising together in nature benefits both body and mind. It can boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, and support mild to moderate depression. Even when there are a few clouds, you will get a burst of Vitamin D which is so important for bone health. You burn more calories outdoors than performing the same exercise indoors, with the climate and terrain offering constant challenges. And socialising while you exercise means you will likely be able
to sustain a longer workout. Last, but definitely not least, when you feel the need for a boost of the 'feel good' hormone dopamine, you need look no further than getting outdoors for a good long walk with friends.
Walking with poles uses considerably more muscle power than ordinary walking or running. You will use 90% of your major muscles as it engages your upper body as well as working the lower body harder too! You can burn 20-40% more calories, and walking with poles takes the pressure off your knees and joints, meaning it’s great for any back and neck problems too. Even a short walk can really make a difference. Why not try one of our 90-minute 'Power of Poles' Courses and see just how much fun you have while exercising?
In Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, your local Walx and Nordic Walking groups offer a great range of sessions for all ages and physical abilities. Our Walx masters and guides are professional, qualified and passionate about making your Walx unforgettable. We're here to teach you the technique to get the most out of walking with poles, and to provide you with support and encouragement. You can choose from workout walks, rehab walks and Adventure Challenges, as well as Pilates and yoga.
There's a great choice, too, of online sessions to complement all our outdoor activities. We are Covid-safe when we walk, but even when we are not allowed to walk in our usual groups you can easily 'zoom' along to our online classes to stay connected and keep active.
We are a sociable, community-focused group -- we chat while we walk, making new friends and enjoying spending time together. There's no big expense, either. All you need is a smile and pair of sturdy walking boots. To find out more, check www.walxridgeway.co.uk or contact Karen@vivo-shapehealthlife.co.uk. See advert page 3.
Learning languages in lockdown
Social distancing and lockdown are tough for all of us and we are struggling to keep mentally healthy. First, we cannot see our loved ones and our friends but also we are stuck at home. How can you turn a difficult situation into something more manageable. Your answer could be languages. There has never been a better time to learn a language than during lockdown.
Use of language learning apps or online classes has boomed during the pandemic and for once Britons are leading the way. The top reason for signing up is an interest in language learning and other cultures, which has overtaken travel.
For those of you who have not taken this challenge yet, huge benefits could come your way. It is like opening a window to another culture; you can connect with other people around the world but there is a lot more on offer: A recent study led by Dr Bak who followed 853 children in 1947 and again in 2010 in their 70’s showed that being bilingual helps you perform better in general intelligence tests and reading. It also indicated that learning a second language as an adult has positive results. It is never too late to learn and the bonus is that it helps you to concentrate better, you will develop new areas of your mind and strengthen your brain’s ability to focus. For those of you who want to feel better in these dark times, learning a new language will help you be healthier in your mind and feel good about yourself. See advert page 15.
