Rob Butler said that he would arrange a meeting with us and the HS2 Minister and at the end of July, he made good on that promise. He chaired a meeting with Ron Petersen (WHS2 Chair), Andrew Stephenson (HS2 minister), Cllr Sheila Bulpett (WPC Chair) and Sally Moring (Vicar of Wendover & Halton).

We have proof that HS2 current plans will flood Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury and the proposed traffic movements will bring the Chilterns to a standstill. Post the meeting with the minister, we will push harder to ensure our mitigation solutions which will prevent it all, not only remain on the table but are duly considered.

The works seem imminent, and we are challenging the Environment Agency to ensure HS2 have carried out the appropriate risk assessments, as done for Colne Valley viaduct.

In the meeting, both Sheila and Ron made our views very clear about the damage the HS2 scheme is and will continue to do at Wendover & the surrounding landscape and villages.

We also continue to remain vigilant in ensuring that HS2’s environmental strategy is actually put in place and is importantly maintained, this will be an on-going and long-term effort.

Mr Stephenson was quite clear that a mined tunnel would almost certainly not happen for Wendover, but he was very sympathetic to our mitigation solutions regarding noise & water in particular. He also understood our frustration at HS2’s and DfT’s lack of openness and collaboration. Ron specifically took issue with HS2’s practice of ‘kicking the can down the road’ – promising remedial action when the line is put into use, secure in the knowledge that they can avoid that action by claiming such mitigation is not ‘reasonable and practicable’.

Watch out for lorries

The concrete trucks will go up and down the A413 and enter the HS2 land at Small Dean just before the petrol station. In November 2015, it was promised by Tim Mould in the House of Commons Committee meeting that “there will be no construction traffic in Wendover” but we believe this promise has already not been kept.

John Colet School 3G Pitch Looking to the future of football in Wendover Following a competitive and lengthy bidding process John Colet School obtained a major grant from the Football Foundation to construct an all-weather, floodlit 3G football pitch on the school grounds. Part of the project is the promotion of football in the community to increase the number of participants from diverse groups including girls, senior and disabled football. In addition to working with Beds and Bucks FA the school has two local partners - Wendover Junior FC and Aston Clinton Colts FC, both of which have many students who attend John Colet. A Football Development Officer was appointed in August to drive the development programme and enable many community groups to benefit from this excellent facility that will create a sporting heritage for the future.

Therefore it was disappointing to read the negative perspective of the male senior team, Wendover FC, published in the recent edition of Wendover News, particularly when

the school has made every effort to involve the club throughout the process including meetings on site with representatives of WFC, attending online committee meetings and frequent exchanges of emails to ensure that the club, which preferred not to be involved directly in the project, was kept informed of progress. This included a meeting at the school to agree the location of a new full-size grass pitch prior even to the submission of the planning application and the outcome of the bidding process. At £13.50 per hour for a team of 13 (11 plus 2 subs) the cost of a weekly 2.5 hour match is £2.60 each, which does not seem excessive.

Wendover Parish Council HS2 update Big trucks = Big problems

Regardless of whether HS2’s appeal against BC for refusing to approve proposed lorry route is successful, big lorries are going to be a big issue.

Meeting the Minister

Cllr Sheila Bulpett, WPC Chair, and Ron Petersen, Chair of Wendover HS2, met with Rob Butler and Andrew Stephenson (Minister of Transport) at St Mary's Church, Wendover. The meeting was hosted by Sally Moring, the Vicar of Wendover.

In a 45 minute meeting Sheila and Ron pressed home Wendover’s views on HS2. The minister did not think a mined tunnel would be likely to happen but understood our frustration at HS2’s and DfT’s lack of openness. He acknowledged the beauty of the area and was pushed to consider further mitigation should the current scheme, some aspects of which he was not aware of, be developed.

HS2 told parliament that vehicles would be clearly identifiable but this isn’t happening.

There are no fixed markers to identify an HS2 lorry. They put a white A4 HS2 sign in the windscreen when the drivers comply.

Should an incident with a HS2 truck occur it is imperative that identification is easy from all four sides of the vehicle.

Time for a Change

Since the Parliamentary hearings on HS2 I have helped where I could to promote Wendover’s interests, always working to get the best mitigation for Wendover. In that time we’ve won all of the arguments and quite a few improvements, we’ve not won the prize though. A tunnel. For a good many years, I have also written this column in Wendover News. Club Corner Wendover Cricket Club

Two of Wendover Cricket Club’s 13 year olds have come to prominence in the senior teams in the last month. Thomas Duff was called up to the 1st XI at Little Gaddesden and his left arm spin claimed 2 for 39; playing again at home, his 3 for 10 v Waddesdon took him to the top of the 1st XI bowling averages.

James Godden kept wicket well at Little Marlow and then played a mature innings of 48, a personal best and easily the team’s top score, that rescued the team from an ignominiously low total. Other notable youthful performances include Charlie Barrett’s 4 wicket maiden and first ever hattrick (all bowled) and Marc Weltenius’s 51* off 23 balls – both in the U19 match at Wooburn Narks that was won by 10 wickets.

The club is having to clear out its buildings at its Ellesborough Road ground, ready to hand over to HS2 on 30 September. Although much will go into store, old style wooden bar tables and chairs etc. will be disposed of unless another home can be found for them. The ground’s final event is on Saturday 25 September after which there will be a mad rush to clear everything out. The planning application for the new ground should be submitted in August and the plans will then be available to

HS2 and Rocky Lane Wendover residents on the HS2 Commonplace emailing list were surprised to receive a communication on Friday 13 August about future earthworks that had actually started two weeks before.

These relate to the section of the line between the Chiltern Tunnel North Portal at Great Missenden and Rocky Lane, Wendover. The Schedule 17 works that Buckinghamshire Council approved on Wednesday 9 June include the Rocky Lane Cutting (see red print bottom left on map). The notice covers “deep excavation, removal and movement of large quantities of soil” at the tunnel portal and “excavating the cutting for the internal haul road and the train line itself” at Rocky Lane.

It is not clear what the current plan is, but we expect that the material excavated will be stored temporarily next to the works until it can be transferred along the haul road to form the Small Dean Embankment,

probably crossing the A413 on the Small Dean Viaduct once built.

This puts more pressure on getting the plans approved for the Viaduct, and subsequently building it by moving concrete along the Wendover Bypass and A413 as mentioned in the Wendover Mitigation Action Group

report (see page 8). While the design for the viaduct is expected to be submitted in November, the HS2 notification reported that the earthworks commenced on Monday 2 August and will stop at the end of October, before restarting in March 2022.

HS2 Construction Update during construction. The route will run to the north of the existing road and houses and will tie into the Cricket Club entrance. All residents will have access from the temporary road to their properties.

HS2 in Wendover

Around Wendover the project sees several changes to the existing road layouts.

In the Autumn we will start work on three sections of works across the roads. The first is the start of the Nash Lee Lane and Nash Lee Road realignments.

This involves a new access road being created which will serve Nash Lee Lane and a new temporary placement for Nash Lee Road. Eventually the re-alignment of Nash Lee Road will travel over the HS2 line and utilise the existing roundabout tying back into the A413.

Around Bacombe Lane there will be a new road created for local resident access only, with a temporary stop up of the existing Bacombe Lane during our construction works. The temporary road will be returned to its current state post construction.

Ellesborough Road will see a new alignment

The Virtual Art Shop The Virtual Art Shop is the online version of the popular art exhibition held by the Chilterns MS Centre (chilternsmscentre. org) every year. The event is one of their biggest annual fundraisers, but due to the pandemic the 2021 event could not take place, so the team at the charity decided to take the art to you instead.

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity seek new volunteers Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity usually has over 400 volunteers, working in their shops, their offices, at the Hospice plus those out supporting fundraising activity in the community.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, volunteer numbers have dropped and they urgently need more volunteers to join the team.

Wendover Junior Football Club Grassroots Football in Wendover After 2 seasons disrupted by Covid, WJFC are eagerly planning for the future. With over 350 children, from the youngest Wendover Cubs at 3 years old, to the seasoned footballers in the U15 teams, we’re proud and excited to be a key part of the local community here in Wendover.

With many changes and improvements planned, a key aim is to secure Charter Standard status – the benchmark for well-run clubs in England.

With a team of over 60 hardworking and dedicated coaches, we now have FA qualified coaches at each age group.

The biggest development on the playing side is the construction of a 3G Astroturf pitch on the John Colet school site. WJFC have been involved from the start with the project, and as such are now a Partner Club along with Aston Clinton.

This provides us priority access to the facilities and a discounted hire rate that will benefit the Club finances in the long term.

The new facility will provide great opportunities for our young footballers, allowing them to train and play right through the season, whatever the

weather. This will give them the best chance of learning new skills and enjoying their football.

Of course, our partnership with the school is important as we look to safeguard the future of the club. With the redevelopment of RAF Halton and the uncertainty around the facilities there, we, like the Senior Football Club, needed to secure both grass pitches for matches and suitable training facilities for the long term.

This relationship will certainly do that, and allow the club to grow and develop.

As a community club, our doors are always open and we’re looking to grow our numbers – evidenced by the recent introduction of a dedicated girls section which started successfully last season and will grow this coming year. Our aim for 2021/22 is to run training and develop 3 girls teams (school years: 3&4, 5&6, 7&8).

Training will be on Tuesday evenings between 6:00-7:30pm starting 7 September.

I’m Will Shirley, born and educated in Wendover before studying both remotely and in the gym to qualify as a personal fitness trainer. During the pandemic I’ve taken an interest in understanding what’s being done to protect us. Evening WI Golden Jubilee Golden Anniversary

Wendover Evening WI had a great time celebrating their Golden Jubilee on Tuesday 3 August when they gathered for an afternoon garden party at St Anne's Hall.

The weather was gloomy but the rain held off, allowing the whole event to happen outside, a bonus at this time.

Everyone enjoyed entertainer Fiona Harrison, a Voice in a Million, as she sang her way through a repertoire of songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s. She inspired the members to get up and dance, to the surprise of many who hadn't expected an energetic afternoon - but the spirit of the WI is irrepressible.

Wardrobes (and the internet) had been searched to provide appropriate flowing, revolutionary and flowery clothes of the early 70s. There was even a Bay City Roller fan decked out in tartan! The general atmosphere was pure fun and enjoyment.

As well as enjoying one another's company at monthly meetings and exploring special interests, Wendover Evening WI has always contributed to local life. Examples of their gardening skills can be seen at Wendover Community Library where the Twinning Stones are surrounded by beautiful bulbs and seasonal flowers.

The WI is the largest women's organisation in the UK and most importantly a trusted place for women of all generations to share experiences and learn from each other. It has always been at the forefront of influencing legislation including recycling and homelessness since the 1970s. In the 1980s they raised awareness of HIV and AIDS and their treatment. Come the 1990s they championed Fair Trade and Carers UK. By the 2000s Calendar Girls caught the attention of the nation and in 2012 the first WI inside a women’s prison was formed.

At our Library The Children's Zone in Wendover Community Library was closed for several weeks around mid-summer as Bryony Thomson busied herself covering the walls with suitable murals. As Fiona had been a reception class teacher as well as a great supporter of Wendover Community Library, the Trustees decided to use Fiona's legacy to refurbish the Children's area. They commissioned mural artist Bryony Thomson to paint the walls.

The Nature Alliance The Nature Alliance is a major new project funded by The Rothschild Foundation to support young people build and maintain resilience in their wellbeing. It will create a fully integrated nature, health and wellbeing service across Buckinghamshire, initially for young people under 25.

The Nature Alliance is a partnership of nature based organisations and will support ‘green prescribing’ in Buckinghamshire and lead the way in establishing nature-based health promotion and green care, first for young people, and subsequently adults.

Building on Lindengate’s reputation as a leading green care provider and lead Tier Two mental health service provider to emerge from the Buckinghamshire Mental Health Response Group for Covid 19, The Nature Alliance will provide early help and targeted services in the form of specialised nature based activities.

Charlie Powell, Co-Founder and General Manager at Lindengate explains: “Lindengate is only 40% full at the moment but so many people with low to moderate mental health needs are already in the system, waiting weeks, if not months, for a ‘talking therapy’ referral like CBT or counselling. Frequently their mental health is deteriorating while they wait.

The NHS can’t cope. The Nature Alliance can bridge the gap and offer some help now, particularly for young people, where the many volunteering opportunities are particularly important. Not only supporting their wellbeing, but also enabling them to learn new skills, get connected and keep healthy by spending time outdoors”.

Social Prescribers/Link Workers, and it is hoped many other referring services, will work with The Nature Alliance partners - Lindengate, BBOWT, Chiltern Rangers, Road Farm Countryways and Chiltern Society - to introduce young people to nature based activities. Tribute: Peter Louis The Reverend Canon Peter Louis, 1941-2021 Peter Louis was born in 1941 in Bromley, during the Blitz. He studied at St Dunstan's College and was the first in his family to go to university – to Oxford, to read Chemistry. After graduating, Peter hitch-hiked on his own through Africa, from Alexandria to Cape Town, visiting local schools as he went. Upon his return, he went to Cambridge to undertake a diploma in education and be close to Marian, whom he had met in Bromley and who was finishing her own teacher training there.

As soon as she graduated, Peter and Marian married and moved to Harefield to begin work in local schools. As soon as circumstances allowed, Peter began his ordination training, studying in the morning and teaching in the afternoon. After ordination in 1968, Peter continued his dual career as a 'worker priest', becoming Head of RE at Imberhorne School in East Grinstead and Curate at the nearby St. Mary's. In short order Peter became a Deputy Head in Nottingham and then Headmaster of the Bluecoat School in Coventry, all the while continuing his preaching and ministry in nearby churches.

In 1985, at the age of 44, Peter finally became a full-time vicar and moved the family – now with four children; Stephen, Mary, Ben and Katy – to the parish of St Francis in Welwyn Garden City. Peter and Marian stayed at St. Francis for 23 years, developing deep and lasting friendships across the parish.

Peter welcomed many people to their faith, led dozens of Alpha courses and went on parish exchanges all over the world.

In 2008, at the age of 67, Peter retired to Wendover. Despite his retirement, he led services at St. Mary's almost every week, he led many assemblies at the junior school, and was keen to work with other denominations in the village. Peter became a trustee of the local charity Lindengate, was a member of the U3A (founding our Wendover table tennis club),

enjoyed playing tennis, organized support for unemployed people during the recession and continued his role as spiritual director to many people. Latterly, Peter loved walking around the village exchanging friendly words with everyone he came across.

Peter was a kind, gentle and keenly intelligent man who was interested in the lives of everyone he came across, be it at church, in his teaching, or on one of his trips to far-flung corners of the world. He had a rare talent for understanding people, especially the young, or the uncertain, and devoted his considerable energies to helping others. His mainstays were his wife Marian, his family, and his faith.

He was loved very much by all his family, and leaves nine happy grandchilden.

Buckinghamshire Council Wild Aylesbury Vale Winners

Community Boards in the north of Buckinghamshire launched the Wild Aylesbury Vale wildlife competition in partnership with Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) and Lindengate Social and Horticultural Therapy Charity. The competition was open to residents and organisations to show how they have incorporated wildlife friendly features into their green spaces. In the Parish Council category, the prize went to Weston Turville Parish Council – who involved the local Explorer Scouts to help establish a patchwork of wildlife habitats around the village with seating areas and informative signage for local residents. They will receive a £200 voucher to spend at Lindengate. Weston Turville Allotment Association was a runner up in the Community Group category. First HS2/EWR Marshal hits the streets of Bucks Due to the significant increase in the HS2 / EWR works across the county, Buckinghamshire Council has appointed its first HS2/EWR Marshal to help residents impacted by the projects.

Group Captain Startup - Exercise Eagle Dare RAF Halton’s Station Commander Group Captain Startup completed a tandem jump 11 August as part of Exercise Eagle Dare, which is a one day Adventurous Training opportunity for Execs to develop their human performance. The aim is to take Station Execs out of their comfort zone and examine how they perform under differing stresses and tension.

Group Captain Startup said: “Exercise Eagle Dare is a fantastic opportunity for Execs to take a short time out of the office and undertake Adventurous Training. It is an excellent course run by the Robson Academy of Resilience which I was happy to complete with Officer Commanding (OC) Training Wing and OC Station Management Squadron. Adventurous Training is a fundamental part of team cohesion and self-analysis that all eligible members of RAF Halton will be encouraged to participate in the next year.”

Charity Motorcycle Ride

In early August, RAF Halton welcomed Carl Surgey (former Flight Sergeant) to the Warrant Officer and Sergeant's Mess (WOSM) for a stopover on his charity motorcycle ride for RAFA.

Carl joined the Royal Air Force Medical Branch at just 16 and served for over 26 years as a frontline medic. He has decided to take to the roads and hopes to visit all the UK RAF Stations that he was posted at throughout his career from RAF Kinloss in northern Scotland to Fort Blockhouse in the far south of England. The ride covers circa 1,200 miles.

He is hoping to raise over £1,000 for the charity.

Sergeant’s Mess Mural

This summer, the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess (WOSM) Anteroom has had a makeover by two local artists Emma Marsden and Jo Chesney who created this fantastic mural of the RAF Halton estate.

Warrant Officer Rousell, the Chairperson of the Mess Committee said: “It is amazing to see the mural come to life depicting the RAF Halton estate, spitfires and poppies, and is made even more special by having local artists design this especially for us. This is something that all Mess Members and visitors to the WOSM will be able to enjoy for years to come.”

Local Faces: Gower Family Wendover went into mourning for Pat Gower’s funeral on 3 June 2020, 57 years landlady of The Packhorse, see https://bit. ly/2VzlZ7C. Her family have benefitted greatly from the wisdom and business acumen shown by Pat and her husband Bert, see also https://bit.ly/3fuBLYn. Pat and Bert had been landlords of the Packhorse since 1963 when they became tenants of Aylesbury Brewery Company. They had the opportunity to buy The Packhorse through Moorlands Brewery in 1991. Bert jumped at the opportunity of securing Pat’s future after he had gone, as his health was deteriorating.

After Bert’s death in 1992, her daughter, Pauline and son-in-law Jim joined Pat on the licence. Pat was still the beloved matriarch of the family, locally famous as the welcoming landlady of The Packhorse where she continued to pull pints until she was 80.

In 1996, Pat and Jim decided to invest in a second pub, The White Swan, in Wendover High Street. The solid family partnership of Pat behind the bar, Jim doing the heavy lifting

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

It’s been a busy time in Wendover now that restrictions have relaxed some more. Since my last bulletin, we have been awarded a large grant from the Lionel Abel Smith Trust to repair more of the Canal path. This is in addition to that from the Parish Council. The work will be overseen by the Canal and River Trust who are currently working on the plans. As hedges will need to be pruned, work is unlikely to start before October, so I will update when timings are known. In the meantime please be careful where the path has been badly eroded.

On 23 July, Andrew Stephenson (HS2 Minister) with various EKFB and HS2 Ltd personnel and Rob Butler MP, met with Rev Sally Moring, Ron Petersen and myself at St Mary’s Church for a discussion on the impacts of HS2 on Wendover.

A frank exchange of views left the Minister in no doubt about our feelings about the current scheme, and dismay at the destruction being brought to the area. Noise, hydrogeology and traffic were all highlighted as was the idea that a mined tunnel would alleviate most of the issues, so should be seriously considered!

I was delighted to attend the opening by Jenny, Fiona Poole’s daughter, of the new children’s area in the library, refurbished using donations in her memory. It is a lovely area with wall paintings of trees and a hideaway for sitting and reading books. I am sure that it will be very well used and is an asset to the facility. Did you know there is also a small enclosed patio area outside? Make sure you have a look.

Other Council projects are ongoing and will be updated next time. Hoping you have had a good summer and stayed safe.

What is Community Speedwatch?

• The scheme is managed by Thames Valley Police, promoted by Buckinghamshire Council and delivered by volunteers.

• The registration numbers of speeding vehicles are recorded.

• Warning letters are then sent out by the Police to the registered keepers stating that their vehicle has been reported as speeding.

• Locations for monitoring speed are selected from sites suggested by the community, based on where there is most local concern about speeding traffic, or the impact of speed.

• Community Speedwatch can only operate in areas subject to a speed limit no greater than 40mph.

• Letters will be sent to offenders by Thames Valley Police. The first letter is a warning letter.

The second is a stronger letter. If Speedwatch activity evidences a speed problem, this may result in enforcement by the Police.

Hampden Pond

In July 2020 the Council announced plans to develop Hampden Pond.

This included making it more family friendly by adding picnic tables etc. The new Council have reviewed the plans and budget and have agreed to simply replace some fencing and make improvements to the paths. This would allow the Pond to remain as a wildlife haven, keeping wildlife in without the threat of added litter. The fencing works will start shortly, with the path improvements taking place over the winter period when the grass cutting season has finished. The Pond has not been re-stocked, but fishing is now permitted through to the end of October. The Open Spaces Working Group continues to work on proposals to improve play areas for families at both Hampden Meadow and Ashbrook Open Space.
