70 years on
As we go to press, the excitement is mounting about a four-day weekend including Bank Holidays on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 June to celebrate the Platinum anniversary of the accession of HMQ Elizabeth II. We will probably need the rest of June to recover from all the fun on offer! The actual date of this achievement of service and longevity was back on 6 February but these celebrations have been planned for early June in the hope of better weather. Thursday 2 June Halton Village celebrations start at 1.30pm in Halton Tennis Club, see page 2 for details. Wendover Parish Council invites us to bring a picnic and join other residents from 3pm to 6pm on the Witchell Field, HP22 6EG, near the Cricket Pavilion. Live music will be provided by Ellis Green. Delay for the main Green Tunnel construction
We understand that the Environment Agency has stopped any work on constructing the Green Tunnel and North Cutting due to inadequate mitigation for the Aquifer impact. We’ve been pointing out since 2013 that the excavation would interfere with the flow of water into the Wendover Arm Canal and Weston Turville Reservoir SSSI nature reserve; diverting it towards Stoke Mandeville and increasing the flood risk in Fairford Leys. The EA and Bucks Council are now using their powers to protect the community and environment. We’ve also been proposing an alternative to HS2’s recent suggestion that they bore a second tunnel alongside the Green Tunnel to act as a storm drain. The water needs to go into Hampden Pond, not add yet further flood risk downstream.

On April 27 we held our 44th AGM. It was the first AGM since 2019 that we were able to hold in person and we were able to enjoy the company of a few guests. The event, however, was tinged with sadness as our dear Patron Tony Mogford MBE had passed away on April 15th. Tony was the Trust's first Chairman and had held that post for over 30 years. It is undoubtedly down to his tireless work and commitment to the Trust since its foundation in Speaking at the 2012 AGM 1977 that it has developed into such a marvellous asset to the Wendover Community. In the last year we have reached the £2million target of grants issued since its foundation.

Lindengate Charity
better health and wellbeing for all through nature Celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
With the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations upon us, we are delighted to be a part of the Queen's Green Canopy Initiative, which invites people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Everyone is encouraged to get involved to enhance our environment by planting trees, with the focus on planting sustainably. At Lindengate, we have already started planting our own native trees and have a large selection of native trees for sale, including Yew, Elder, Black Poplar, Elm and many more. In the Autumn, we will be running workshops for anyone who would like to find out how to plan, plant & protect your trees with our team of experts. Please see our website for details, dates and costs. In addition to our wellbeing services, our conservation programmes have national
reach, supporting the reintroduction of endangered native species into biodiverse landscapes nationwide. Lindengate is home to the largest clone bank of Black Poplar trees in the UK and were recently honoured by a request from the Greater London Lieutenancy to supply a Black Poplar and attend its ceremonial planting in Regents Park in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Since opening, we have worked on significant projects with the Butterfly Conservation, Wildlife Trusts & RSPB growing Devils Bit Scabious, the sole food source of the Marsh Fritillary Butterfly, earning us extensive media coverage, but also recognition through our achievement of multiple National and Regional Awards for conservation initiatives. For more information on Lindengate, our programmes, events, volunteer opportunities & opening times, go to: www.lindengate.org.uk.

The new ground development progress continues to frustrate; despite planning permission being given on 25 April, one of the key conditions with programme implications is to carry out archaeology investigations and we were set to start this in early April. But HS2 then decided this was the moment to insist that no further surveys or intrusive works could take place without a licence and 6 weeks later, we are still waiting for the licence. Consequently it is now certain we will be without a main ground for a second season and we are indebted to 4 local clubs who

Thousands of tons of green waste is collected from households across Buckinghamshire every week, but what happens to this once it’s collected? Well, in the first instance, garden waste collected from Aylesbury Vale homes is delivered to a household recycling centre where it is then transported to one of Buckinghamshire’s composting facilities. After an average of 16 weeks the compost is ready for use and after screening for any contaminants, it is distributed and put to good use by local farmers.
Now is the time of year when the garden seems to be inundated with pests such as slugs, snails and blackfly munching their way through our prized flowers and vegetables. Of course, it’s easy to resolve this issue with a wide array of pesticides available to purchase but what about the bigger impact on birds, frogs and other wildlife that live in the garden? Tribute: Tony Mogford MBE It was with great regret that long standing residents of Wendover (and further afield) learned of the death of Tony Mogford on Good Friday, 15 April, 2022. The reason for the regrets are because for 70 years, Tony was the go-to person in Wendover to help make things happen. He was Local Face in November 2012, https://wendovernews.co.uk/ news/local-face-mogford-tony/. First and foremost, Tony was a family man. His wife, Mary, was the love of his life. Her Tribute can be read at https://wendovernews.co.uk/ news/tribute-mary-mogford/. Their children, Jacky and Edward, are well known in Wendover. Jacky moved away but continued to visit and stay in Wendover as she helped to look after her parents in sickness and in health. Her children are now grown up. Edward became part of the team at Bank Farm and now lives there with his wife, Sue, and their children. Tony was delighted to be a great grandfather twice over. Tony was famous for his well formed sheep and his flock is highly respected to this day, Edward continuing the work of his father. Tony bred and trained his own beloved sheep dogs, too, giving Halton farmer Michael Blundell the best dog he ever had. Michael was chair of Halton Parish Council for 20 years and Tony was a great friend. Tony had a life-long interest in the latest farming developments. At Berkshire College of Agriculture he was the first student President then Governor for over 50 years including 10 years as Chair then Honorary. In the 1960s and 70s, Tony became involved with Michael in Asclin Cotel, the largest dairy co-op (500 cows) in the land in the 1960s and 70s even though he never kept cows commercially! His input was on the business side. Curiously, we now have the Arla plant near Aston Clinton village, which is the processor for the largest dairy cooperative in the country.
Council, then Aylesbury Vale District Council and eventually Buckinghamshire County Council. He retired in 1985, having inspired and opened the original Civic Centre in Aylesbury, now superseded by the magnificent Waterside Theatre. Tony's interest in education ranged wider than agriculture. He became chair of governors for several educational establishments including Green Park Youth Training Centre and Aylesbury College. Former Head Teacher of John Colet School, Philip Mitchell confirmed, "Until very near the time I retired, Tony was the Chair of Governors of John Colet School. My good fortune was that he understood perfectly the roles of the Governing Body, and of the Chair of that body. He was always genuinely interested in the school's progress, and of the achievements of students. I remember well the questions he would ask about the aims behind plans for the school's future. His preparations for meetings of the Governing Body were always meticulous. The school had been built after the Second World War when extra capacity was needed for secondary education, but by the 1980's maintenance costs were growing and major investment was needed. Tony was much involved as we worked with Buckinghamshire Education Committee and County Architects to rebuild the school. His contributions to the many discussions were always much appreciated.
to build Wendover Pool starting with fundraising in the 1970s and continual improvement since. To recognise their involvement, there was always a clamour to name it and there is now a plaque at the pool which reads "The Mogford Community Pool". Wendover Swimming Pool Trustees said: "Wendover Swimming Pool are saddened to hear of the passing of Tony Mogford MBE. Tony was an enormous champion for the pool, always very supportive of this asset to the community." Tony's influence on the lives of many in Wendover extends way beyond the educational. He was at hand in the 21st century when two different temporary buildings dating from the 1950s needed considerable refurbishment to survive. These were Wendover Memorial Hall and St Anne's Hall. He understood the need for well appointed rooms and spaces in which local people could gather for fun and more serious purposes. In each case he was able to manage amazing refurbishments at much lower cost than demolish and rebuild. Tony was originally a tenant of the Lord of the Manor, Lionel Abel Smith. Together, they ensured that Wendover had land for Tennis, Squash and Bowls Clubs, see pages 9 & 13. The Bowls Club were delighted with his chairing of their AGM, as always, at the end of 2021. Everything and everyone was properly in place under Tony's leadership. The Football Clubs use John Colet land. Tony chaired Wendover Community Trust, now Lionel Abel-Smith Trust, from its inception, see also page 9, helping countless individuals and organisations. Tony and Lionel both supported the development of Wendover Cricket Club. Unfortunately, the Ellesborough Road pitch is being destroyed by HS2 at this very moment but there are plans for a new pavilion to be built and a new ground prepared.
"Tony was also directly involved in the development of Wendover Swimming Pool. Thanks to the work of the School's Deputy Headteacher, Chris Busby, applications for funding to help develop the pool to the required standards were successful. Again the County Architects Department worked on the improvements to the changing facilities, and I have a good memory of going to France one weekend to look at the flexible, innovative pool covers that were available there. This project resulted in what is still a major public asset for Tony's funeral will be at St Mary's Church, Wendover, at 1.30pm on Friday 27 May. All Wendover." This professional interest led Tony into local are welcome to attend. No flowers, please. Any government, at first with Aylesbury Rural District Tony and Mary were an integral part of the thrust donations to St Mary's Church.

RAF Halton Little Troopers from Wendover completing May Marathon Challenge for military charity Two sisters from Wendover are raising money for military children’s charity, Little Troopers.
Emma (10) and Lucy (7) live at RAF Halton as their dad serves in the Royal Air Force. Like many Armed Forces personnel, Emma and Lucy’s dad regularly spends time away from home due to military exercises and overseas deployments and he is due to be deployed again for four months later this year. Both girls attend Wendover C of E Junior School, where nine percent of the students are from a service family. The school regularly uses resources from the charity Little Troopers to support its service students, especially when parents are deployed on military operations. The girls were inspired to do their own fundraising challenge for the charity when the school raised more than £500 for Little Troopers earlier this year. Emma and Lucy aim to run or walk 26 miles together during the month of May and are going out most days to complete a mile before school. They have already raised £120. To support Emma and Lucy in their May Marathon Challenge, visit the Little Troopers website at www.littletroopers.net/donate to make a one-off donation and add a personalised note of support for the girls.

Local Face: Ron Melville Ron was born in St Andrews, Scotland and brought up on a farm just on the outskirts of the city thereby developing an interest in wildlife, the countryside and the natural environment. This continued at Edinburgh University with a BSc in Ecology with Honours in Forestry. He soon joined the Forestry Commission in the beautiful Mull of Kintyre in the West Coast of Scotland, followed by stretches in Snowdonia and Kielder before 5 years as a Wildlife Research Officer, mainly dealing with deer and grey squirrel issues. Following this Ron was transferred to the South Wales Valleys which was to be one of the most interesting and challenging periods of his working career. It was also where he had his 15 minutes of fame on all national television channels eating grey squirrel pie! Ron moved to Buckinghamshire in 1992 to open a new Midlands regional office based at Wingrave. After a considerable amount of time house hunting, it was obvious that Wendover was the place to stay! He finally
moved to London as Regional Director with responsibility for urban and community forestry throughout England, including trips to Paris, Amsterdam and other European cities! Ron found retirement very difficult for the first six months. It was a chance discussion with the Chair of Wendover Library Trust that introduced him to the local community library. When working in South Wales and Surrey, he had initiated a number of ‘Friends Groups’, so he knew that they could be a great way to involve local people. Friends of Wendover Library was born and with the help of Phil Mitchell and the sadly missed Vaughan Davies it now has over 260 members and led to the very popular OnScreen in the meeting room, the Quarterly Newsletter Shelf Life, the very successful annual Charity Golf Match and numerous other events and
functions. The production of 4 free Walks leaflets has been a major addition to the tourist and community information role. The annual calendar has led to a summertime exhibition of local photos. Don't forget to submit your entry by 30 June, fowlmembers@hotmail.com. If libraries are going to survive in the future, they must be more than libraries and become a central hub for the whole community. That has always been the long-term aim. Many hours and many years were spent preparing grant applications for extending and restructuring the community library. All to no avail. In particular, to be eventually turned down by HS2 for their compensation funds was a great disappointment. Finally, however, through the close association with the Bucks County Library Service they have received nearly £500,000 including £310,000 from the Arts Council. Watch this space!

Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair
It’s been a busy time with the Council as we have had the Annual Parish Meeting at the Chiltern Way Academy, a pleasant evening with an fascinating talk from Paul Coffey, the Head. It was good to share the successes of the Council with members of the public and to present awards to outstanding members of the community: Service with a Smile - Istanbul Meze & Grill, Volunteer of the Year - Jan Ward from the Chilterns MS Centre, Business of the Year - Wendover Motor Spares, Lifetime Achievement - Jonathan Seabrook from Wendover Cricket Club, The Parish Council Award - Robert Duggan.
Wendover Produce Market Saturday 18 June, 10am to 2pm Manor Waste Meet our new Clerk Lynda Baker
I started my role in early May and look forward to serving the Community and Councillors of Wendover Parish. Apart from a recent sojourn in Wales, I have lived all my life in and around the Wendover area. I grew up in Princes Risborough and lived for over 30 years Steve Bowles gave an update on the grant for in Aylesbury, just off the Wendover Road, before the Memorial Hall PA system and Robert Duggan moving to North Powys in 2018. on behalf of the Wendover Dementia Alliance. I have also been re-elected as the Chair for another For the last 2 years I have been working for Powys year. WPC are currently organising the Platinum County Council together with NHS Wales and Jubilee Picnic in the Witchell for 2 June, free to all Welsh Government managing a team helping with the pandemic effort. (see advert, right). There has been a real increase in dog mess on verges and streets in the Parish. This is both unpleasant and a hazard for the Grounds Team so I would urge dog walkers to make sure that they clean up, including when dogs are off their lead that is, in the parks.
I hope that my previous career experience working with various UK corporations as well as local government will stand me in good stead as I commence my role as Clerk, which I am already learning is a multiple and varied role.
On a sad note, esteemed local, Tony Mogford sadly passed away in April and his funeral is on 27 May. A supporter of Wendover in all its facets, he was also an AVDC councillor for 25 years and with BCC until 1985. His wise counsel and friendship will be sorely missed, and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
Outside of work I enjoy walking in the Chilterns, watching rugby and continuing my new hobby of Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP), which I started in Wales in Aberdyfi, and hope to continue in Buckinghamshire.
Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 7 June, 7.30pm St Anne’s Hall For all meeting and committee dates please visit our webpage www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/meetings Wendover Easter Hunt Winner
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Wendover Easter Hunt, we received 40 entries in total. On Monday 25 April the WPC Chair, Sheila Bulpett, pulled a winner from a hat of correct entries. Congratulations to Eden Rowan (6 years old) who won herself a £50 voucher to spend on Wendover’s High Street!
As we approach a summer where hopefully Covid The cycleway is almost finished, as I write, and remains in abeyance and life continues to resume, some of the symbols on Lionel Ave have been I look forward to facilitating the Councillors to removed. I hope that more people will use it! implement the voice of the local people.
That’s all from me, so have a good Jubilee! Sheila Bulpett
