Wendover Community Car 25th Anniversary
Wendover Community Car celebrates 25 Years of Service
It was 25 years ago that a group of community activists decided that Wendover needed to have locally based transport to help those members of the community who were less physically able to travel. The plan was for them to use a car based in Wendover and adapted for their needs so that they could live as normal a life as possible. That vision from 25 years ago has stood the test of time and the community car is still helping lots of people to get about. The car takes folk to Aylesbury for shopping, to social events and to church events, such as Services and Christenings; the list is endless.
Roy Coates, the acting Chair of the Management Committee, says “I am in awe of the foresight to those who saw the need for a community car and turned it into reality. It is amazing how many dedicated volunteers in Wendover and surrounding areas have made the community car such a success. Many have made their contribution and retired; others are still supporting the car today. So many people have used the car over the years and been grateful that it is there. This photo demonstrates how folk continue to use the car today. I just want to say thank you to all the volunteers, present and past, and our supporters, such as the Parish Council and the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust. We couldn’t do it without you”.
There may be some of you who either have a need for transport or know someone who needs help. It is really very simple to use the service. We have a co-ordinator called Joanne who arranges journeys – just call on 01296 317769 - and she will book in the time and date for the journey together with the return. The car will come to your home to pick you up, find a convenient place to drop you off at your destination and then pick you up later and return you to your home.
It’s a great local service. Its future depends on you using it. We are eager to meet the needs of those less able to use public transport; that is our purpose. It is for you so don’t hesitate to use it!
