Foreword Chairman

THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS A BRIGHT FUTURE Wervingsdagen organises three events throughout the academic year. These events are meant to be a comfortable path towards a professional career. The Skill Sessions provided a chance to prepare yourself for your job interview, and to improve your general softskills altogether. After this, the Career Expo was there to help you determine which employer or sector is the perfect match for you. By now, we present you our final event this year, the final step towards a bright future, the Interviewing Days.

In March you had a first opportunity to contact companies of your interest, and the Interviewing Days offer the chance to further explore these companies. Students can upload their resume, and employers might invite you to for a lunch or dinner. Another option is a more in-depth one-on-one conversation with recruiters. We thoroughly recommend this event for students in the final stages of their studies, as this event is perfectly suitable for obtaining your first job or narrowing down a selection of future employers. To ensure you find your way in all the opportunities waiting for you, we have composed this guide for you. Its contents are detailed descriptions of all companies attending the Interviewing Days. Most of these companies have been present on the Career Expo as well, but there are some new employers available as well. Browse through this guide and find out which employer you would like to converse with. Do not hesitate to subscribe for any of the events at wervingsdagen.nl, since this is a perfect first step towards a great future after your education.

Interviewing Days guide | april 30 - may 3, 2018

Foreword Rector Magnificus

LIGHT UP YOUR FUTURE

The interview. After all those years of studying, testing, doing internships and writing your thesis, it all boils down to this. Will you kick-start your career, transition from a promising student to an achieving professional? Are you able to present yourself in a clear and honest way, with all your knowledge and experience, your character and your ambitions? And will you obtain enough insights into the position and organization you’re applying for, it’s culture and your career prospects? And most importantly, will you succeed in establishing a ‘click’ with the person at the other side of the table? Having an interview is so much more than just a chat. You have to be well prepared, to know your own strengths and weaknesses, to have prior knowledge about the organization and its policies, and to assess beforehand whether there is a match to be made. And with all these things in your head, it is your challenge to ‘let go’ during the interview, and to connect with your counterpart as two real human beings. The key to this is to be curious, to be informative, to wonder. Because it is by asking the right questions, you will at the same time get the most valuable insights, and show where your real interests and values lie. It is the power of questioning, of examining what is, and improving the existing conditions, that defines you as a Master of Science in engineering. Because, in the end, employers will not hire you for what you already know, but for your potential to learn and grow within their organizations. If you’re able to demonstrate that potential to the person you’re having the interview with, you’re on the right track. Because a successful interview is not just about lighting up your own future, but even more enlightening the future of your counterpart. Good luck, and have fun!

Prof.Dr.Ir. Frank Baaijens Rector Magnificus Eindhoven University of Technology

Interviewing Days 2018

ACTIVITIES

The Interviewing Days are the perfect opportunity to meet potential employers, discuss your career opportunities, and learn more about companies of interest to you. From April 30th until May 3rd you will have to opportunity to personally get in touch with one or more companies of your choice. The topic of discussion is entirely up to you, as long as it is career related. In order to create a suitable atmosphere, the event will be hosted at the Pullman hotel in the Eindhoven city centre.

Interviews

An Interview is a personal conversation between you and one or two company recruiters. An interview will take between 30 and 60 minutes, as chosen by the company. The interview could serve as a way to get to know the company better, but it can also be a more serious application as part of a selection procedure. This is up to you and the company to decide. Lunch or Dinner Subscribing to a lunch or dinner will give you the opportunity to get to know a company and its culture in a more informal way. Together with 7 other students you will have lunch or dinner with two recruiters of the company of your choice. During these meals you can discuss any topic with the company recruiters.

Company Cases

The Company Cases are a new way of getting to know a company: by actually solving a problem the company throws at you! Every case will take 3 hours and will only be held once. By participating in a Case you will get a very hands-on look into what working at the company is like, and what knowledge from your studies you can apply. All available cases are detailed in the next pages of this guide!

APPLIED MATHEMATICS

AM

Mathematics is all about learning to see things in an analytical way; to think critically and solve problems by being solution-oriented. This way, any problem can be made abstract, which makes nearly all obstacles in real life solvable in the abstract world of Mathematics. The study is made up of three main fields of study. The first is analytical mathematics, which has a lot in common with Physics. The second is stochastics, which is the field of statistics and probability theory, such as analyzing big data and waiting times. The third main field focuses on security and optimization, such as RSA and traffic light optimization. This way, a Mathematician is able to think analytically and is an all-rounder for numerous different companies. During the study, the students are trained to work together and think creatively. This way, Mathematicians can think `outside the box’, and as such, can come to the most optimal conclusion

COMPUTER SCIENCE

CS

The study of Computer Science provides a strong mathematical base. The mathematics used is called logics, which is a discrete form of Mathematics seen in all kinds of areas within Computer Science. Because of this strong base, any Computer Science student has a broad field of knowledge. Among others, the following subjects come about during the study: - Theory and algorithmics, where students learn how to solve different mathematical problems the best way possible. - Software development, where students learn to create and document software programs from scratch. - System architecture, networks and information systems, where students look at the safety of networks and the optimization of systems and processes, as well as the saving of data. - Web technology, where the psychological side of technology is viewed, such as the attractiveness and the user friendliness of products. - Data Science, in which different techniques are used in the field of data analysis, data mining and machine learning. Outside of these subjects, students also learn professional skills and how to work in a team. These things are learned by the many group projects in the study. All of this enables a student to cross the gap between the user and the endless number of applications of a computer. This gap is crossed by the critical way of thinking, specialized in the form of logical reasoning, and the structured approach to the most complex problems.

Company Case

PEOPLEHOUSE

Required knowledge: Microsoft Office and an innovative & entrepreneurial mindset. Supplies: Laptop

MAKE MEANING! This is the Peoplehouse DNA. Peoplehouse firmly believes in the enthusiasm, the innovative view and the creativity of entrepreneurial talents. Tell me more, what’s the company case? Labelmeester is a company set up by two Young Entrepreneurs, and aims to unburden estate owners in making their properties more energy efficient. As of 1 January 2023 it is compulsory for office buildings to have an EPC (energy label) of minimum C. Labelmeester offers full service packages to office occupiers and landlords in order to make their property more sustainable and comply with legislation. What are we going to do? During the workshop you will think about the design and the expansion of this startup. Together we will set up a new business case, based on the Peoplehouse way of working (Design Thinking & Lean Startup). In the discovery phase (phase 1) we will look at the environment in which the company operates. What does the market look like? Who are the competitors? And what are the most important (tech-) trends? Additionally we will identify the customer (segments) and their needs, using customer empathy. This will lead to the development of the first concepts. In phase 2 we will start to experiment using the build-measure-learn feedback loop. The concepts and assumptions from the discovery phase will be validated. The first step is to find out what the customer needs (what is the problem?). Then a minimum viable product (MVP) should be developed to begin the process of learning as quickly as possible. From there a perfect ‘customer-problem/ problem-solution/ solutionmarket’ fit is created between the introduction of a new idea and the connection in the market. Ultimately, you want to be able to scale up your business case (phase 3). We do this based on the Rockerfeller habits (including HR, strategy, execution, and cash), so that you can maintain the growth of your business in an orderly manner. Priorities, information and rhythm are important in this phase.

FINDING COMPANIES WITH ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES USING DATA SCIENCE The challenge A local governmental environmental law enforcement wanted to find unknown companies that are performing activities that need to be monitored or illegal. The challenge they gave us was this: help us find these hidden companies so that we can start monitoring them and make the city a safer place. The approach We applied principles of design thinking and data science to solve these types of problems. In our Design Sprint, we design and develop a working prototype using real data in 5 days. With a small group of experts, we extracted their expertise and used it for machine learning to optimize our algorithms to estimate the probability per company of their environmental risk. On day 5 we validated the prototype with real end users to make sure that we have both a quantitative data validation and end user qualitative feedback. The solution We combined several internal and external data sources to find potential high-risk companies using the estimated risk distribution based on known monitored companies. Once we have prepared, enriched and normalized the data, we predict the risk using a Bayesian Network approach. The feedback on these predictions, provided by the experts, is used in a machine learning process to optimize the risk assessment. Once we have identified potential companies, inspectors will go to the location to do an onsite assessment. Their feedback is used in our optimization as well. Used technologies in this solution: R, tidyverse, purrrlyr, Shiny, ggplot2, Leaflet and Hydenet. The results The governmental organization found several relevant companies on the first day! and as of today they have planned inspections at 78 companies, labeled over 700 companies as irrelevant and could focus on the most important and high-risk companies. We expanded the solution with an additional component for finding distribution points that might involve illegal and/or criminal activities.

SIOUX

Required knowledge / supplies: None

SIOUX CCM DIGITAL PATHOLOGY SCANNER In the traditional way the pathologist analyses the biopsy with his microscope and creates a report. But pathologists must seek more efficient means to support targeted, patient-specific therapy and accurate, first time right decision-making. To aid the pathologists our customer wanted to develop an Ultra Fast Scanner (UFS) system for the migration from optical to digital pathology. With this system images of the biopsy are created which equal 40x magnification. Those images are instantly available for analysis and can be shared with pathologists worldwide. Computer Aided Diagnoses (CAD) becomes possible and images can be added to patient databases just like e.g. radiology or MR images. With Digital Pathology it is no longer necessary to store loads of glass slides in controlled environments and organize the logistics involved in sending around these slides for e.g. second opinions. The case After an introduction of the system the case will be presented. It will focus on the slide store and slide handling system. Keywords are: reliability, accuracy, user friendly and floor space. Scanner properties; Key characteristics of the UFS: • Automatic (= unattended) processing of batches of up to 300 slides • Automatic self-calibration • Automatic recognition of tissue regions (ROI) Some impressive numbers • Pixel size is 0.25 μm (RGB channels); equivalent to 40x optical • Max image size 25x60 mm2; 72 GByte • Typical image 10-15 GByte in 1 minute: Average data rate > 200 MByte/s, Peak data rate: 432 MByte/s Technical challenges • Image quality; Resolution and contrast, color fidelity • Stage motion accuracy; Not resulting in image stitching artefacts • Image processing; Image compression algorithm • Auto-Focus module; Low contrast, irregular shapes, fast response • Automatic tissue region recognition; Small ROI’s, no tissue ‘misses’ • Slide handling; Using standard, commercial slide racks, slide diversity Learn more about Sioux

CEGEKA Interview

The ‘real’ Cegeka cannot be summed up in one definition, as it is a patchwork of different people, cultures, talents, personalities and customers. It’s exactly this diversity, and the fact that we succeed in delivering great projects together, that makes us who we are. However, Cegeka employees are expected to rally behind a set of values and principles such as ownership, curiosity, agility, entrepreneurship and respect. And everyone is expected to step out of their comfort zone when it comes to solving our customers’ problems. What makes us unique? The world of IT is mostly about cold, hard facts and figures. These, of course, are crucial. MINISTERIE VAN DEFENSIE Interview

We are the Ministerie van Defensie. We are indispensable in a world of turmoil. We protect all that we as a nation cherish. We fight for a world of freedom and security, because we believe that everyone has the right to live in such a world. This is our mission, and it’s also the reason we participate in missions. Many of us who choose to work for the Ministerie van Defensie do so because we want to make a difference for our country. It is a choice that has a real impact on us, on our families and on our friends. We are ordinary people, but when it comes to the crunch, we will lay our lives on the line. The Netherlands is our base. We will always defend our country. It is in our Kingdom’s interest that other countries are stable. That is why we work to secure peace, freedom and security both in the Netherlands and far beyond our borders. After all, our freedom begins with the freedom of others. The armed forces take action when dialogue has reached its limits. We prefer to help to prevent war, conflict and injustice. Where possible, we do so without violence. But if necessary, we intervene with due force. Because sometimes words need to be backed up by force. That means we fight for freedom where turmoil reigns, and where it is peaceful, we keep the peace. Where disasters occur, we offer help. We cannot do this alone. We do our job shoulder to shoulder with allies within the Netherlands and abroad. We help each other. Together, we carry out missions professionally, united by the same mission. As long as war, turmoil, conflict, piracy and terror exist in the world, the armed forces are indispensable. Because if we don’t do it, who will?
