Foreword Rector Magnificus

FIND YOUR FOOTPRINT AT THE SKILL SESSIONS Obviously, everybody wants to leave behind a footprint that lasts. To leave a legacy, however small or insignificant to some, might in fact be for you and many others most fulfilling. Making an impact that matters, that is what we all are trying to achieve. In my position as Rector Magnificus and as Professor at TU/e, I am privileged to meet and talk to many of you students. During those encounters, I am always fascinated by the sheer enthusiasm and positive spirits I receive from you. Yes, many of you spend a lot of time nowadays on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube or other online platforms that seem designed to distract you from everyday life. But still, when faced with a specific challenge, an exciting opportunity or a complex problem, you immediately get energized and are able to hyperfocus and cooperate intensely with others simultaneously. Truly amazing. This talent, and raw energy, is extremely useful to shape your career, to define ánd fulfill your own purpose in life. And it is up to you to utilize the right tools and skills to get where you want. Right now, you are getting ready for the job market. An important step for an almost-graduate, one for which you need to prepare diligently. And actually, the kind of skills that you have acquired in your years at TU/e align very well with the most important skills employers are looking for. According to the 2019 global employer survey of QS, these are: • Complex problem-solving skills • The ability to work in a team • Communication skills During the Skill Sessions of the Wervingsdagen, you will be refining your abilities to effectively communicate with future employers, co-workers and even yourself. Please, take very good caution to these skills, because in the long run they will be a determining factor in finding your right footprint, and making a lasting impact to society.

Prof.dr.ir. Frank Baaijens Rector Magnificus Eindhoven University of Technology

THE ART OF CHOOSING English

Monday 9 December

9:00 - 12:00

How do you choose? Every day we make hundreds of choices. All those big (what will I study?) and small (what will I eat?) choices shape your life and the lives of others. But do you make the right choices? We will look at questions like: How can one make the “right” choices? How do you avoid making important decisions on the autopilot? When to follow the beaten track and when not to? You will actively work on personal and practical strategies to help you make choices in life. The workshop is designed for people who are willing to reflect deeply, who are not afraid to challenge themselves and who dare ask themselves: “what do I really base my choices on?” You will first develop a personal vision that you can use to weigh your choices against. Then we will bring these lessons into practice through a personal case, such as a choice about your career, relationships or anything else. We will let go of how you are ‘supposed’ to be and help you find your wisdom.

VISUAL INFORMATION English

Monday 9 December

Over 60 percent of our brain activity is dedicated to visual processing. This means our eyes protect us from harm, navigate us through spaces and teach us to recognize objects, people and locations. This remarkable brainpower can be used to communicate countless concepts without even using words or language. Are you looking to give a punch to the way you communicate with teammates, project coaches, and the outside world? Visual communication gives clarity to complicated systems and situations, even across different fields of study.

18:30 - 21:30

Yaël van Engelen

De Zwarte Doos

22

I will guide you through the tools and options to use low key visuals to strengthen your projects, presentations and everyday life. Don’t worry if you think your sketching skills are close to none, we will keep it easy. All you need is some basic writing equipment (preferably a pencil and a pen/marker of choice).

Trainer

YAËL VAN ENGELEN I have been creating artworks for a long time, from portraits to comic book drawings. While making these, I experiment a lot with materials and mixing them. Within my Industrial Design master, I try to research the possibilities to explain complicated technological processes in a new and visual way. This is why I am excited to discover how to do this, together with you!

GETTING THINGS DONE Who Needs GTD? Nobody gets a degree in productivity. People are hired for their technical skills and experience—because they know how to develop programs, design products, oversee communications, devise strategies, or lead people. But few—if any—are well versed in workflow management. And when even just a couple of people fumble, their slip-ups significantly and negatively impact stress levels, innovation, execution, and engagement for the rest of the team.

English

Monday 9 December

GTD teaches skilled knowledge workers at every level and in any role how to better get work done so they can effectively put their valuable, technical skills and experience to use.

What Does GTD Workshop Teach?

18:30 - 21:30

In this 3-hour GTD workshop, you get familiar with the GTD methodology and get familiar with the five steps; Capture, Clarify, Organize, Reflect & Engage. It provides skills to increase your focus, prioritize commitments, and achieve stress-free productivity. Turn chaos into control - Participants learn a system to reduce mental clutter and take control of their thoughts and tasks. Align focus and actions - Once in control, participants learn practical skills to reduce decision fatigue and focus on next actions. Increase productive moments - These skills applied consistently to the right tasks and projects create more stress-free, productive moments. Improve individual effectiveness - Productive moments yield increased reliability, efficiency, and effectiveness in the projects and moments that matter most.

PERSONAL BRANDING WILL GET YOU THE JOB THAT FITS YOU BEST

Dutch Workshop

Finding the ultimate job, internship, projects (as a freelance professional) or clients (if you are an entrepreneur) requires three things; The first thing to do, is to take on the ‘experience mindset’: being good is not always good enough. You need to take on a mindset that triggers you to lead yourself in your professional career and to communicate and express who you are, what you are capable of and why you do what you (want to) do. The second step is to discover and describe what your qualities are and what your added value for others can be. Your qualities consist of your knowledge, skills, values and also products and services you can or would like to deliver. In the final step, you start communicating and expressing who you are, what you are capable of and what you would like to do. Telling people, connecting to relevant people, sharing your knowledge and experience and behaving as your future self. The personal branding workshop will guide you through these three steps. The workshop is an introduction in the personal branding approach to be continued by yourself. The workshop and the personal branding approach is aimed at finding the job, internship, projects or clients you are looking for or being found by and asked by the people and organizations who are looking for you. You will gain the insights and practice actively with techniques to discover, describe, communicate and express who you are and what your relevance for others can be.

THE ART OF A REALLY GREAT CONVERSATION

Dutch Workshop

Wednesday 11 December

The Dialogue as a method for a deepening conversation.

18:30 - 21:30

When was the last time you have had a fascinating conversation? We text, chat, meet and discuss quite a lot with each other. However, this is not always with the desired outcome. Besides, we use new technologies to communicate easier, faster and more often, but this also often leads to regular misunderstandings.

Arno Houben

The Dialogue Method is aimed at the Appreciative Inquiry of the perception of others. Excellent listening and asking open questions are essential for this. We shove our own opinions and experiences to the background, causing us to be more open towards the story of the other. This almost automatically creates a trusted connection that forms the basis for a truly personal conversation. The Dialogue is a conversation method to improve your communication skills and to improve your personal and professional relationships. This can help you in making joint decisions, giving advice or finding solutions. But above all, it will strengthen your relationship with others.

De Zwarte Doos

Trainer

ARNO HOUBEN This is a workshop by ‘Eindhoven in Dialoog’ organized in collaboration with TINT and Studium Generale. The workshop is also an excellent preparation for the TU/e in Dialogue event on 12 February, an evening where participants use the Dialogue Method for having great conversations on a specific topic. This yearly event is also organized by Eindhoven in Dialoog, TINT & Studium Generale.

INTERACTION, I’M GOOD AT IT! Are there any questions left? You only get to know what people think about something if you ask them.

Friday 13 December

14:00 - 17:00

Most people only allow some form of interaction at the end of their presentations. They do this with the same deadly question, which was asked at the beginning of the presentation. This is very poor and genuinely a waste. If people have questions only at the end of the presentation, this could mean you didn’t explain something well. Moreover, the chances are high that you lost the person with a brilliant and good question in the middle of your talk! In this training, you will learn how to add different forms of interaction to your presentation, which will integrate seamlessly with your story!
