TAKE A STAND When you are (almost) finished with your studies, it is time to search for a new challenge. For most of you this will be at a company, in the Netherlands or abroad. But how do you find your perfect match? At Wervingsdagen, we want to help you in your search. During this academic year we already organized various activities to help you excel within your career. The Skill Sessions for example, where you had the opportunity to develop your skills in over 60 workshops. At the Career Expo in March, you had the opportunity to meet more than a 160 companies over the course of two days. And yet to come are the Interviewing Days from the 29th of April till the 2nd of May. The Interviewing Days are particularly interesting if you are in the last phase of your studies. Here you have the possibility to speak with employees of various companies during lunches, dinners, interviews and company cases. These activities have different goals from orientating yourself to real job-interviews. They happen in small groups with other students or even one-on-one. for discovering the different possibilities in your field or even speaking to your dream employer. This booklet has been specially tailored for you, the student, with all the information of the participating companies in one place. Find the companies you would like to meet. Apply for the Interviewing Days at Wervingsdagen.nl and you might get selected by the company to have a talk about your future. Are you ready to find your dream job during the Interviewing Days? Now it’s your turn. Take a Stand, be a Brand!

Foreword rector magnificus
BE A BRAND As you approach the finalization of your education at TU/e, new prospects are dawning at the horizon. Out there, as a freshly graduated Master of Science, you will encounter many opportunities to further grow and develop your career and contribute to science, business and society. One of the first steps towards your new future is the job interview. It’s one of those brief encounters that may be a pivotal point in your life. Will you be accepted into the job, profession of company of your dreams? Or will you miss out, and do you need to take another aim? For a job interview to be successful, preparation is everything. You need to know your own strengths and weaknesses, to have in depth knowledge about the organization you’re having the interview with, and to assess beforehand whether there is a match to be made. And during the conversation, you have to allow yourself to be the authentic ‘you’ and make a real connection with the other person. Because, after all, making the perfect match depends not only on your capacities, but also on your openness, curiosity and eagerness to learn and grow. I am sure that the Interviewing Days of the TU/e Wervingsdagen will give you a good kickstart into the next phase of your professional development. During the Interviews and the Company Lunches and Dinners, you are given a unique opportunity to link with many highly popular employers in the Science and Engineering Field, and lay the groundwork for your first assignment as a TU/e engineer. Just go out there, good luck with your interviews and discussions, and most importantly, enjoy!
Prof.Dr.Ir. Frank Baaijens Rector magnificus Eindhoven University of Technology
11
ACTIVITIES The Interviewing Days are the perfect opportunity to meet potential employers, discuss your career opportunities, and learn more about companies of interest to you. From April 29th until May 2nd you will have to opportunity to personally get in touch with one or more companies of your choice. The topic of discussion is entirely up to you, as long as it is career related. In order to create a suitable atmosphere, the event will be hosted at the Pullman hotel in the Eindhoven city centre.
INTERVIEWS An Interview is a personal conversation between you and one or two company recruiters. An Interview will take between 30 and 60 minutes, as chosen by the company. The Interview could serve as a way to get to know the company, but it can also be a more serious application as part of a selection procedure. This is up to you and the company to decide.
LUNCH OR DINNER
Subscribing for a Lunch or Dinner will give you the opportunity to get to know a company and its culture in a more informal way. Together with 7 other students you will have Lunch or Dinner with two recruiters of the company of your choice. During these sessions you can discuss any topic with the company recruiters.
COMPANY CASES The Company Cases are a way of getting to know a company, through actually solving a problem the company presents to you! Every case will take 3 hours and will only be held once. By participating in a Case you will get a very hands-on look into what working at the company is like, and what knowledge from your studies you can apply. All available Cases are detailed in the next pages of this guide!

Powered by BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AND MEDICAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY BE Biomedical Engineering focusses on problems in modern healthcare. Diagnostics, disease treatment and prevention ask for a constant renewal of technology in healthcare. Biomedical Engineering is the answer to this, because students are educated to use interdisciplinary knowledge applied to human healthcare problems. Biomedical problems are often complicated and require knowledge of fields like mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, mathematics, computer science and electrical engineering. All these fields come into play in the three research groups; Biomechanics & Tissue Engineering, Molecular Bioengineering & Molecular Imaging and Biomedical Imaging & Modeling. The Biomedical engineer uses available data from all different sources and translates it into solutions which can be used by a doctor. The broad field of knowledge of a Biomedical engineer makes him useful both in and out of the medical world, where he can function as a bridge between different disciplines or as specialist in his specialization.
PSYCHOLOGY & TECHNOLOGY
PT
Students in the bachelor Psychology & Technology learn how technology influences people and how to use their knowledge of psychology to make technology function optimally for its users. Graduates understand how people think, act, feel, observe and make decisions. This knowledge enables them to understand what technology does to the people who interact with it. The understanding of the interaction between people and technology provides the possibility for them to create new technological products, such as motivating rehabilitation technology, social robots, or brain-computer interfaces.
SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION
SI
Students in the Sustainable Innovation major have the ambition to create a more sustainable future. They have in depth knowledge of sustainable technologies but also study the economic and societal factors that are important to make these innovations a success. They are able to analyse what is needed for consumers and firms to adopt these technologies and how policymakers can speed up the transition to a sustainable society. Furthermore, they place recent developments and discussions about sustainability in a long-term perspective, to see how national and global developments are related.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
ID
Industrial Design focuses on interactive systems, products and related services that change, intensify or make life more comfortable. This field is all about innovation, creativity, technology, user needs, aesthetics, societal and business interests. New technologies and issues arising from societal trends are translated into innovations for everyday life. Students work, for example, on solutions that can aide in being an individual in a highly connected world, or on designing the future of vitality.
13
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
IE
At the major Industrial Engineering the students get subjects on the field of Mathematics, Engineering and Integration (a combination of technical and Business subjects). On average, students spend half of their time on Engineering courses and the other half of their time on Mathematics and Integration courses. The master’s degree programs of Industrial Engineering are Operations Managements and Logistics (OML) and Innovation Management (IM). Operations form the base of every organization, whether in manufacturing, service or non-profit industries. Operations Management and Logistics is a multidisciplinary field that addresses the efficiency and effectiveness of the operations of an organization. OML comprises disciplines such as product development, quality management, logistics, information systems, and human resource management. Operations extend from the performance management of a group of design engineers or building in quality-feedback loops to the precise prediction of production and delivery performance. Supply chain management and the design of information architectures for e-business are also part of operations management. The Innovation Management discipline studies the management of innovation processes and contains quantitative and qualitative theories, tools and techniques to make businesses and entrepreneurs more innovative as well as more successful in their innovation activities. Key aspects of the Innovation Management discipline are new product development, strategic marketing, sales and after-sales service management, business intelligence, open innovation, and entrepreneurship. The object of the studies is the new product and business development process. This includes the processes to cooperate with a diverse set of stakeholders and share knowledge with them.
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND CHEMISTRY CE As a Chemical Engineer, you are able to provide technical solutions to problems and issues related to the process and product technology. In addition, the great analytical skills provide career opportunities within a wide range of sectors such as consultancy. Within the Chemical Engineering department different divisions can be distinguished. A part of the students work on the design, maintenance, improving and troubleshooting of large industrial processes. Other students work on the innovation in the field of materials science, polymers in order to design smart materials. Finally, there is a group of students working on synthesis and design of new compounds, such as catalysts and organic solar cells. The Chemical Engineering study provides specialists with a broad base, which can be used in a variety of industries.
APPLIED PHYSICS
AP
Applied physicists have a different view on the world around us. Physical phenomena turn into challenges, fascinating questions to investigate and analyse. But as an applied physicist you go one step further, by applying your knowledge of these phenomena in new technological developments. In many cases these are ambitious projects, in which working in teams with people from other disciplines is a central factor. The Master degree program in
14
Applied Physics gives you the opportunity to get involved in physical phenomena, new technologies and measurement methods. All of this is based on technical applications of physical principles in the most diverse disciplines. The practical experience you gained during your master program is a definite plus when applying for a job as a researcher or anything else.
APPLIED MATHEMATICS
AM
Mathematics is all about learning to see things in an analytical way; to think critically and solve problems by being solution-oriented. Any problem can be made abstract, which makes nearly all obstacles in real life solvable in the abstract world of Mathematics. The study is made up of three main fields of study. The first is analytical mathematics, which has a lot in common with Physics. The second is stochastics, which is the field of statistics and probability theory, such as analysing big data and waiting times. The third main field focuses on security and optimization, such as RSA and traffic light optimization. This way, a Mathematician is able to think analytically and is an all-rounder for numerous different companies. During the study, the students are trained to work together and think creatively. That is why Mathematicians can think `outside the box’, and as such, can come to the most optimal conclusion
COMPUTER SCIENCE
CS
The study of Computer Science provides a strong mathematical base. The mathematics used is called logics, which is a discrete form of Mathematics seen in all kinds of areas within Computer Science. Because of this strong base, any Computer Science student has a broad field of knowledge. Among others, the following subjects come about during the study: - Theory and algorithmics, where students learn how to solve different mathematical problems the best way possible. - Software development, where students learn to create and document software programs from scratch. - System architecture, networks and information systems, where students look at the safety of networks and the optimization of systems and processes, as well as the saving of data. - Web technology, where the psychological side of technology is viewed, such as the attractiveness and the user friendliness of products. - Data Science, in which different techniques are used in the field of data analysis, data mining and machine learning. Besides, students also learn professional skills and how to work in a team. These things are learned by the many group projects in the study. All of this enables a student to cross the gap between the user and the endless number of applications of a computer. This gap is crossed by the critical way of thinking, specialized in the form of logical reasoning, and the structured approach to the most complex problems.
15
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
ME
Mechanical engineering combines subjects from mathematics, physics and chemistry. Aspects taught during the program include heat and flow, mechanics and dynamics, the control of machines and systems, and properties of materials. But as an aspiring mechanical engineer you need to have more than technical knowledge alone. Later you’ll often be at the centre of a project team of specialists from different disciplines. That’s why a lot of attention is given to the social and communication aspects of your development. As well as creativity and innovative abilities, mechanical engineers are also expected to be able to work well in teams.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
EE
An Electrical Engineer works with electricity and electromagnetic fields and their applications in telecommunication and control systems. Because of this an Electrical Engineer possesses a lot of knowledge about mathematics, physics and computer systems. Electrical Engineering focuses on three societal themes: ‘The Connected World’, ‘Care and Cure’ and ‘Smart and Sustainable Society’. Every Master program of Electrical Engineering connects to one of these three themes, which means that a graduate student possesses a lot of knowledge of at least one of the three named societal themes.
AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY
AU
The program Automotive Technology is a unique study of automotive engineering on a university level. During this study students get to face the technological challenges in a societal perspective. Modern cars are intelligent systems which require a lot of knowledge of various disciplines. These disciplines (Electrical Engineering, software engineering and mechanical engineering) will be learned by a student of Automotive Technology. He uses this knowledge in projects like smart mobility and clean vehicles.
DATA SCIENCE
DS
Data Science is a new engineering discipline and the main driver for innovation in the years to come. Just like computer science emerged as a new discipline from mathematics when computers became available, we now see data science as a new discipline driven by the torrents of data available today. The data scientist will be the engineer of the future and scientific research and innovations will be data driven. Data is collected about anything at any time, at any place. The goal is not to collect more data but to turn it into real value. Data can answer questions that have never been asked before. Visualization of data can really help discovering remarkable patterns that were never noticed before. Besides the technical side, you will also focus on societal issues, such as legal, social, ethical, business, and entrepreneurial issues which relate to Data Science. Data Science is a joint bachelor of Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology.

One of Demcon’s main areas of expertise and a constant source of interesting projects is the high-tech industry. In order to produce smaller and smaller microchips, operations need to be performed in extremely clean environments, which ultimately leads to a machine that fully operates in vacuum. This may seem simple, but it actually provides a notable set of challenges: friction can be very unpredictable, heat dissipation through convection is nonexistent and outgassing of components can severely pollute the vacuum. In the Demcon case, students are challenged to design a set of actuators for use in vacuum, considering the limitations of such an environment. To achieve this, students will be encouraged to think of solutions in the broadest sense possible: we’ll briefly discuss subjects like electronics, magnetism, dynamics, mechanics, control, as well as lesser-known subjects such as tribology (the ‘science of friction’). This closely resembles the way of working at Demcon, where we work in diverse and multidisciplinary teams to achieve the best possible solution, while not being afraid of diving into new/unknown subjects. The different stages of a design process are visited in a nutshell; from the definition of the requirements (Why are the requirements as they are?) to the concept phase (Is this the best way to solve the problem?) and the detailing (How can this be produced?). The different solutions and challenges that participants come up with will be shared and discussed, after which the Demcon solutions – the results of the actual project – will be shared. Engineers that were involved in the project will present the case and the lessons learned, answer questions and discuss alternative solutions. More information on page 44

Company Case
SIOUX SOLAR PANEL CLEANING ROBOT Solar panels are losing efficiency during their lifetime due to contamination; this causes a substantial loss in efficiency and loss in revenues for owners of solar panels. For an average household with 12 solar panels this is a loss of energy of 200 kWh per year. Autonomous robots could be of help by cleaning them with some water and a brush. Ideally these robots find the panels by themselves and clean them by hopping from one panel to the other. This case will be about how to move and navigate with a cleaning robot over a slippery (when wet) glass surface and how to move from one solar panel to another around obstacles.
The case: • Design a robot that is able to navigate over a flat panel which is at an angle of approximately 45°. • The robot must move from its start position to the opposite end of the roof. • Chimney and window positions vary between roofs. • Each solar panel on its way is dirty and has to be cleaned over its complete surface using a brush and (soapy) water. • For the race a 1-liter reservoir of water is prescribed • The robot which cleans all panels the fastest wins the race. • If uncleaned panels remain after the maximum time (5 min), the robot which has cleaned the most panels wins. • The dirt on the panel will be such that it can only be sufficiently removed with the brush and (soapy) water. • The robot must be working autonomously when it is within the contest area. It is not allowed to “help” the robot while in the contest area.
Some specifications • Height: max 0.3 m. Width X Length: max 0.45 X 0.6 m when starting, this is allowed to extend during the competition. The robot must function autonomously. • The brush, diameter: 15 cm, as supplied has to be used. Rotation of the brush and water are required to make it work on the stains we place on the solar panels. The water can be supplied form a closed container on the robot.

MINISTERIE VAN DEFENSIE Interview Lunch We are the Ministry of Defence. We are indispensable in a world of turmoil. We protect all that we as a nation cherish. We fight for a world of freedom and security, because we believe that everyone has the right to live in such a world. This is our mission, and it’s also the reason we participate in missions. Many of us who choose to work for the Ministry of Defence do so because we want to make a difference for our country. It is a choice that has a real impact on us, on our families and on our friends. We are ordinary people, but when it comes to the crunch, we will lay our lives on the line. The Netherlands is our base. We will always defend our country. It is in our Kingdom’s interest that other countries are stable. That is why we work to secure peace, freedom and security both in the Netherlands and far beyond our borders. After all, our freedom begins with the freedom of others. The armed forces take action when dialogue has reached its limits. We prefer to help to prevent war, conflict and injustice. Where possible, we do so without violence. But if necessary, we intervene with due force. Because sometimes words need to be backed up by force. That means we fight for freedom where turmoil reigns, and where it is peaceful, we keep the peace. Where disasters occur, we offer help. We cannot do this alone. We do our job shoulder to shoulder with allies within the Netherlands and abroad. We help each other. Together, we carry out missions professionally, united by the same mission. As long as war, turmoil, conflict, piracy and terror exist in the world, the armed forces are indispensable. Because if we don’t do it, who will?
