Nick Joy

Great, great, great grandson of Henry Joy

As someone who works in Westbourne, a walk through the great Henry Joy's Victorian arcade is just one part of the daily routine. However, for me Henry is not just great, he was my great great great grandfather, and his legacy is arguably Westbourne's finest architectural jewel.

Henry Joy

Built in 1884 at a cost of £18,000, seven years after he successfully completed the glass roof in Gervis Arcade in Bournemouth, Henry was a local man at the time. He lived in Westbourne in Seamoor House, the name of which was eventually referenced in Seamoor Road (previously The Crescent).

When the Arcade opened for business on 1st January 1885 the first shop was occupied by Willis and Trantum. Five shops were occupied by December of that year. In total there were, and still are, 24 shop units each 24 feet wide. When it became a Grade II listed building in 1976 it was described as a ‘well-preserved polychrome gothic symmetrical shopping arcade built of red brick with Bath stone dressings’.

9 Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the arcade, and probably the most overlooked, is the selection of grotesque corbel heads found above the downpipes between the shops. Don't make the mistake of calling them gargoyles - they don't have the water spouts that would define them as such. Many have been overpainted over the years, but they still appear to be in good shape. As a child I would count them every time I visited. Fashioned on ancient water gods, there's anecdotal tales that their features were based on Henry's petrified (literally) relatives - and as a direct descendant, that's not much of a compliment! Poo le R oad

Have you ever noticed that you can't see from one end of the arcade to the other due to the intentional kink? This gives the illusion that the arcade is longer than it actually is!

Next time you stroll through the arcade, take a moment to marvel at the grotesques atop the down pipes, linger and read the dedication on the Seamoor Road exit, or perhaps when you walk out of the Post Office, just glance up at the marvellous 'HJ' monogram in the spandrels on the outer gables opposite you. Do you have an interesting story to tell? Email tom@westbourne.info with the details.

Who is Number 1? The Prisoner is back for 2010

24

The Prisoner, a six-part remake of the 1967 Patrick McGoohan series, starring Jim Caviezel as No 6 and Ian McKellen as No 2, is to hit our screens this Spring. As massive Prisoner fans, we couldn’t be more excited! If you aren’t familiar with the original show, The Prisoner was a 17 episode TV series broadcast in 1967. Starring and co-created by Patrick McGoohan, it combined spy fiction with elements of science fiction and psychological drama. The new show is a joint production between ITV and the American company AMC. While it is not a direct remake, the new show takes themes from the original and reinvents it for modern times. There are more than a few nods to the original including the iconic white “blob” known only as Rover, the inescapable Village and all characters being known only by numbers. Full plot line details of the show have been closely guarded but Ian McKellen has commented that, unlike in the original show, the new Prisoner will leave NO questions unanswered, we even get to find out where The Village is and who is Number 1. The new show brings a wealth of acting talent in addition to the leading men. Hayley Atwell (Brideshead Revisited) plays love interest “4-15”, Lennie James (Jericho and Spooks)

25 plays “147” and Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweenie Todd) plays Number 2’s son, “11-12”. The show has already aired in the US, the New York Times said, "This version of The Prisoner is not a remake, it’s a clever and engaging reinterpretation by Bill Gallagher, who shaped the script to contemporary tastes and sensibilities — notably, a postmodern fatigue with ideology and big thoughts." The Prisoner is due to air in March 2010 on ITV. To find out more and to discuss both the new and original show, visit the excellent ‘The Prisoner Online’ website. “The Prisoner Online” site is an unofficial guide to The Prisoner (1967) and The Prisoner (2009).
