Westbourne News News from Westbourne, Branksome & West Cliff

Family Festival Focuses on Children On Thursday 24 July 2014 the Family Festival returns to Meyrick Park. This year the event looks back to 1905 when the first such event took place. This year the organisers are looking to recreate the children’s festival with over 170 stalls showcasing what Bournemouth has to offer to local residents. Displays from voluntary, statutory and local businesses will also show the history of what they were like 100 years ago, including the YMCA highlighting what their service was like. Local musicians and youth bands will entertain visitors all day with music dating right back to the 1900s. There will be a parade starting at Bournewmouth Pier and ending in Meyrick Park, to get involved in the parade call Julian on 01202 456295 or email family.festival@bournemouth.gov.uk To commemorate WWI each of the children that take part in the march will be given a WWI themed peace medal as the Mayor addresses the town and children.

Bright Idea for our Street Lights Westbourne is set to shine a little brighter as the council is replacing all of its current street lighting lamps with low energy modern Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. The new LED fittings emit a crisper, white light and will make street lighting appear brighter compared to the old kind of yellow neon street lights. The upgraded lights will better conserve energy, reduce the town’s carbon footprint and deliver savings of £32.2million over 20 years. The project includes replacing 1,000 lighting columns and 500 illuminated bollards. The new lights will lead to a 73 per cent energy saving in current street lighting consumption.

With over 7 years experience in the beauty industry and the last 3 years specialising in lash extensions and Hollywood waxing, Chantelle is well placed to take on Majic Tan, a well established local business. “It’s great working in Westbourne and being part of the cosmopolitan local community”, says Chantelle. “Being in the middle of Poole Road is a fantastic location and we’re already getting to know the local characters” she adds. Along with Mandy Parkhurst (courtesy of The Fit Barn), Chantelle brings a large range of new beauty services to Majic Tan. Melodies in Motion Feel Great Music, Movements & Moments!

Melodies in Motion classes are continuing through the summer, which will give you the chance to try a new element before September classes open. Sue won’t just be teaching exercise – she has furthered her training in a new but old discipline, ‘The Fitness League’. More of an exercise club than pure exercise, there is a great social side to joining the Fitness League. Sue attended a member’s weekend break in the spring with around seventy others in Devon. These breaks not only afford people varied exercise but also holidays, companionship and fun. The Fitness League has been around for over 80 years and members have been practising since inception. The classes are suitable for all ages and if practised regularly keeps you young and supple. The emphasis is very much on posture, stretch and dance. And of course there is a selection of music, which fuels the feel great factor. So, come on fellas, come on girls, you don't have to feel GREAT to start but you have to start to feel GREAT!

For kids, we have a special summer holiday 2 for £10 offer on DK Ultimate Factivity books.

Air Festival Books The Bournemouth Air Festival will be a big event in the summer calendar so look out for our themed window display and please vote for us in the competition. In previous years we’ve always been Highly Commended, but are keen to win the trophy this year. An expanded range of aviation titles will complement our usual broad range of transport books. Bournemouth Air Festival takes place from Thursday 28 August to Sunday 31 August.

Westbourne Bookshop

65 Poole Road, Westbourne, Bournemouth, BH4 9BA. Tel: 01202 768626 Like us on Facebook/WestbourneBookshop Stay Alive – Simon Kernick £7.99 A gripping new race-against-time thriller in which the life of an innocent witness is turned upside down when an unknown woman runs towards him and his family, chased by three gunmen. The woman harbours a deadly secret, she's in terrible danger, and now the witness is too. Sycamore Row – John Grisham £7.99 For over 20 years, John Grisham's A Time to Kill has captivated readers with its raw exploration of race, retribution, and justice. Now, its hero, Jake Brigance, returns to the courtroom in a dramatic showdown as Ford County again confronts its tortured history. Filled with intrigue, suspense and plot twists that are the hallmarks of John Grisham’s courtroom dramas. The Beach Hut Next Door – Veronica Henry £7.99 For those lucky enough to own one of the beach huts in Everdene, this was the summer of their dreams. For some, a re-awakening of the memories of one summer fifty years ago, for others, a chance to put the past behind them. But this summer is not all sunshine and surf - as secrets unfold, and some lives are changed forever. Survivor – Lesley Pearse £7.99 It is 1938 and Mari is a defiant, strong-willed and selfish 18 year old, who, if she stays in the small, gossipy town of Russell, New Zealand, will get herself into some serious trouble. Her doting parents fear for her reputation, so with the world on the brink of war, Mari leaves home on the SS Rimutaka, bound for her aunt and uncle's house in London. Mari loves her new life and finally feels she is mistress of her own future, until it is all snatched away by the war. This One Is Mine - Maria Semple £7.99 A long-awaited second novel from the author of Where’d You Go Bernadette? - one of my favourite reads of last year. Violet Parry is living a life of luxury with her rock and roll manager husband and her darling toddler, but she is also deeply unhappy. So, when she meets Teddy, a roguish small-time bass player, Violet comes alive, and soon she's risking everything for the chance to find herself again.

Westbourne’s Music & Arts Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

What an amazing couple of months we have to reflect on in Westbourne since the last time I wrote. There have been some amazing events that have coloured the local area with fun, frolics and wonderful music. June saw the inaugural Wheels Festival take over Bournemouth. This event proved to be very popular and I was very privileged to witness much of the festival, including plenty of music and I have written a full review at www.dorsetforum.com Looking forward, there are some fantastic live music events in Westbourne over the summer months of July and August. Starting at The Winchester, just 5 minutes’ walk from Westbourne, there are some massive shows that are sure to be talked about all over town. The Yes Sir Boss first I must mention is the Yes Sir Boss album launch show on July 26th. They are a Bristol based ska punk band that have been ripping up trees all over the country and we are very lucky to have them in our town strutting their stuff. If you like your ska vibes then strap on your dancing shoes and get skanking in the Winchester. At The Winchester on the 24th July there is also a Pepper showcase. Pepper is an app that aims to promote the hottest new live acts across the country. On the 24th it is Bournemouth’s turn and even though the line up is not

21 www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic

yet announced, it is sure to be a cracking line up. Make sure you’re there to see a future Glastonbury headliner. Lastly at The Winchester, make sure you get down to the Freeway Poets evening every first Wednesday of the month. I mentioned this evening in my last column and it truly is cracking, serving up the very best spoken verse, arts and music in the area. As detailed on page 6, Craig Charles is performing at The Winchester with his Funk & Soul Club on the 18th July. This is a one off, not to be missed. Tickets on sale: www.onthebus.fatsoma.com Rock Restaurant in Westbourne has continued to put on live acoustic acts in their wonderful setting. Rock makes wonderful food and can really provide the perfect evening when listening to some chilled out acoustic vibes. The Winchester 39 Poole Hill, BH2 5PW 01202 557937

Rock Restaurant 16 Landseer Rd, BH4 9EH 01202 765696

Do you play? If you play an instrument yourself and want to showcase your talent in Westbourne, I am looking to start an evening in the area. If you’d like to join in, contact me at facebook.com/aarongregorymusic I am looking to get everyone together to add another fantastic evening to the glittering array of entertainment in the local area. Finally, I hope your end of the summer is glorious with plenty of sunshine and music.

Independently owned funeral directors now open in Westbourne At your time of need, you don't have to be on your own • Caring, professional support • Traditional funeral services • Simple funerals arranged • Pre-paid funeral plans • Woodland burial • Eco-friendly choices • Direct service available • Memorial stonemasonry

With over eighteen years of experience in helping families at their time of need, I am delighted to bring our support to the area of Westbourne. This feels particularly poignant for me as my grandparents owned a guest house on Seamoor Road. My father spent his childhood playing with friends on the beautiful beach at Alum Chine and the surrounding woods.

Stephen Nimmo FdSc MSBP Founder & Funeral Director
