As the leaves turn brown and it gets a bit colder , there’s no escaping the end of summer. However there’s still lots going on at this time of year, from the Arts Festival to a bountiful selection of seasonal produce at the Westbourne Farmers Market. The market has a fantastic range, but it’s not just carefully reared meat and free-range eggs, look out for craft beers, ciders, wines, cakes, seafood and crafts. Last time we picked up some delicious lavender, apple and sultana bread, all baked in its own flowerpot! The meeings are for everyone, not just for the old or young, or those with jobs or already involved in community work, but for any resident who would like to find out more about council issues or would like to raise something with the council. Westbourne Library is on Alum Chine Rd, BH4 8DX.
Revolutionary Website Designed for the Blind A website designed in Dorset specifically for blind and partially sighted people is a step forward in accessibility consideration. Dorset Blind Association aim to make life better for blind and partially sighted people. They care about visually impaired people, so made a website reflecting that philosophy. The new website features very large font, simple and brief text, clear and minimal design, simple navigation. It is easy to adjust the font size, and has a number of colour options because different sight conditions find different colour combinations easier to see. For those with little or no sight, the website reads the text aloud. People with various sight-conditions were involved in the project from the outset, and it was launched to the visually impaired community before the actual launch date, to gain feedback from the people who matter most to the charity. “I love the format, font increase and colour change‌excellent!â€? says Mark Noble, who is visually impaired and advises Barclays on accessibility. Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival Our pick of the best shows
Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival is back from 26 September to 12 October. The annual festival is a rich mix of the best regional, national and international arts across dance, film, theatre, performance, visual arts, spoken word, literature and music. There’s a huge amount going on across Bournemouth but we’ve picked out a few highlights, all within walking distance of Westbourne. Kick starting the Festival and fresh from London, Fuel will be presenting ‘The Roof’ with six performances over the official opening weekend (26 – 28 September). Sound, dance and the free running are combined to create an adventure for the senses transporting the audience to another dimension. The performance takes place in a purpose built arena designed by Jon Bausor, better known for designing the Paralympics opening ceremony sets. Tickets start from £12. Robert Mitchell premier’s his first large-scale musical work, ‘Invocation’ at the Festival on 26 September at St. Peter’s Church. The piece blends jazz, choral, classical & improvised music and will be performed by Mitchell’s quartet, Panacea, joined by the Grammy winning Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and young music students from both Avonbourne College & Harewood College, tickets £12. Other highlights will include Rosie Wilby feminist inspired interactive storytelling ‘Nineties Woman’ on 8 October at The Winchester. Nightly from 8 - 10 October experience ‘Shot at Dawn’, a compelling World War One courtroom drama, uniquelly performed in the Bournemouth Council Chambers. It tells the story of two young men from the Dorsetshire Regiment, on trial for cowardice. The outcome of a guilty verdict? Execution by firing squad. Westbourne’s Music Scene Autumn Local Music Guide
Congratulations to our resident music columnist Aaron who recently married Vicky and they are currently on honeymoon. Before jetting off Aaron left us some pointers as to all the best music offerings coming up this Autumn. Photo: ifyimages.com Coming up in October is Oxjam, an annual national music festival organised by Oxfam, taking place this year from 17th-19th October. The Oxjam concept is to showcase local artistic talent on a national scale with towns and cities all over the UK taking over their music venues on one weekend. Venues across Bournemouth are taking part, including Chaplin’s and The Cellar Bar, The Anvil, Sixty Million Postcards in Bournemouth and more locally at The Winchester on Poole Hill. Bands playing include Saturday Sun, Gareth and Annie, Danni Jackson, Skyway Avenue, Beth Johnstone, Bamboo Vipers and many more. Oxfam work on long-term projects with communities determined to shape a better future for themselves as well as responding fast in emergencies, and staying to help people rebuild their lives. On the Saturday 20th September you’ll find the very unique Lounge Kittens at The Winchester. The Lounge Kittens are a Southampton based trio performing popular songs with a twist - all in three part harmony. Recently the Kittens have knocked audiences for six at Glastonbury and Sonisphere festivals and are not to be missed. On the 17th October at Mr Kyps in Lower Parkstone the legendary Buzzcocks are performing live. The Buzzcocks were one of the most successful UK punk singles bands during the late-1970s, combining Beatlesque romance and melodicism with a buzzsaw guitar attack and blistering tempos presaging the pop-punk movement of the 1990s and 2000s. Tickets are on sale online at www.mrkyps.net Fresh back from honeymooning our very own Aaron Gregory is back on stage for a Halloween special show at The Cellar Bar in Boscombe for Ski Daddle’s Shindig event on the 31st of October. After the launch of the band's fourth studio album ‘Luminous’, The Horrors are appearing at O2 Academy on the 23rd Setpember. Their music has been described as everything from garage rock, gothic rock, shoegazing to post-punk revival. Fancy something a little more mainstream? Singer, songwriter, producer, occasional rapper and all round king of the club banger Example is playing the O2 on the 27th October. The Winchester 39 Poole Hill, BH2 5PW 01202 557937
