Ensure you dress to impress as top film actress, Veronica Myers, will be in town for the new release of her film ‘One Short Second’ in which she plays the starring role. It’s just a matter of time before a threatening note causes chaos and Veronica is found dead in the dining room. To miss out would be simply criminal. Make sure you check in on Friday 28th March – witnesses and detectives required. Dressing up is thoroughly encouraged for this night of murderous entertainment, all in support of Julia’s House. Visit the Quiet Garden The Quiet Garden is open for dates in April and May. The idea of the Quiet Garden is to provide an opportunity for stillness and reflection for visitors of any faith or none. The experience of a quiet time enables us to slow down, to become more alert with our five senses, to offer a space for quiet reflective prayer in a caring context and awaken the creative side in us all. Enjoy the pond, trees and flowers, the bird song and the spirit of place. Read, paint, sew or simply be. Just go and be refreshed. Welcomers will be there to listen if you would find it helpful to talk to someone during the day. Open Dates: Thursday 3rd April from 10am 1pm and Saturday 24th May from 10am 4pm. For details and to reserve a place call Pat on 01202 822914 or Michael 01202 390371.

Blast From The Past - but can you help with the dates? The face of the Westbourne high street continues to evolve. As the old Blockbuster unit was being made over we got a glimpse from Westbourne’s past as the old Meads signage was uncovered. Mead’s were an estate agent, auctioneers and surveyors. Blockbuster (and Flicks before) was there for over 15 years but we can’t find any further dates. Can you fill the gap in the local knowledge? When did Meads open and when did Flicks/Blockbuster take the unit? Do you have photos of Meads open? Email editor@westbourne.info if you can help.

Hub of Creativity Creative Skills Workshops in Westbourne

Now in their second year of business, Charlotte Miller Ceramics and Emma Leonard Handcrafted Jewellery have established a friendly, creative community hidden away in the heart of Westbourne. Both teaching studios are located in Granville Works on R L Stevenson Avenue, bringing new learning opportunities to the area. Charlotte and Emma offer weekly recreational classes that are suitable for complete beginners or someone looking to develop existing skills. Small class sizes mean lots of tuition time, and a fun atmosphere to learn in. Charlotte and Emma have nearly 20 years teaching experience between them, and have both taught students at degree level. In addition to weekly classes Emma also offers one-day and weekend workshops that are an ideal 'taster session' to try out a new skill, and also make great gifts. You can also come to the studio to make your own wedding rings, and there are hen-party workshops too. As well as teaching their classes Charlotte and Emma both sell their own ceramic and jewellery work. Most recently they were both selected to show work at the prestigious 'Made Brighton' event alongside some of the UK's most popular craftspeople. An exciting new term of classes starts in March. You can find out more about classes and Emma and Charlottes work at: www.emma-leonard.co.uk www.charlottemillerceramics.com

Experiencing Nuga Best Local resident tells us about his experience

NUGA BEST recently opened at the top of Poole Hill and offers FREE health treatment. Who better to tell us about NUGA BEST than a local resident and octogenarian? Ken has been regularly visiting NUGA BEST Bournemouth and tells us about the health impacts he has experienced. “I first went to NUGA BEST Bournemouth at the end of October 2013. It was painful for me first time on the treatment bed. At that time I was really looking like an ‘old man’ and had many health problems; some of those being a serious curvature of the spine and painful legs due to a prescription error following heart surgery. ” “I was over-weight with little or no energy; had bad posture and I could only walk short distances with a stick to balance. I really didn’t want to go again and gave my wife a hard time. However she persuaded me to “brave it” and I have subsequently been there over forty times … all free of charge! I am now the proud owner of a NUGA BED and am looking forward to many more improvements to my well-being. So far they include: no need for the walking stick; much improved posture; no pains in my legs (painkillers reduced from eight to none per day!); my balance is back to normal at 80 years of age; I’m told I look taller and slimmer though my weight has not reduced; I feel like a new man with a different outlook on life mentally; I am full of energy and running for the first time in twenty years!“ Ken finally adds, “I would like to say that the atmosphere at NUGA BEST, before, during and after the treatment is so friendly, helpful and professional. I wish this unique, ethical business great success as it helps to heal the local population and I will continue to recommend it at every opportunity.” Book your FREE session at NUGA BEST today and see what it can do for you, call 01202 292222.

Exercise is fun! Plus many more benefits

Exercise is not only fun - it is one of the most important things you can do for your health. According to the World Health Organisation, different types and amounts of exercise have different benefits; e.g. thirty minutes of regular, moderate-intensity physical activity on most days can help decrease the risk of coronary heart disease, normalise blood pressure, decrease high cholesterol, strengthen bones, joints and muscles, decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes …….the list goes on. Fitness is fundamental to everyday life and; the old adage is true ‘Use it or loose it’. Exercise will improve flexibility and make you feel good. Balance, co-ordination and reaction times can be improved with practice and the quality of life just goes up. Add to this, the endorphin rush post exercise, the camaraderie due to a happy, friendly atmosphere and the fun moving to your favourite music. Exercise – can you afford to go without it?

Westbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

It has definitely been a lively month in Westbourne. I didn’t feel like I could start my column without mentioning some very prominent events. I witnessed a band called Saturday Sun release their album at The Winchester supported by Si Genaro. This was a real “I was there moment” because the two local acts went on to be highly talked about in the national press the week after. Saturday Sun were rightfully recognized as The Guardian’s band of the week for their amazing album Orixe. And Si Genaro became a Si Genero The Voice © BBC national hero with his exuberant performance of the Chicken Train on BBC’s The Voice. It was a performance that had Kylie Minogue and Will.i.am dancing along like chickens and therefore highlights that there has never been a better time to check out your local gigs, especially at The Winchester (10 mins walk from Westbourne) you just never know what is The Voice © BBC going to be the next big thing! Coming up in Westbourne in the next two months are an array of top events to excite before the main festival season gets going. One monthly event has become a legend in the local area. Freeway Poets at The Winchester is an event whereby great poets and artists come together with a special guest headliner and put on an evening of thought provoking poetry and art. It has become a premier event due to a fantastic atmosphere whereby anyone is welcomed to enjoy the arts.

21 www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic

Poetry is the focus of the event however further arts are encouraged as well as acoustic music. This month’s event takes place on 2nd April and then on the first Wednesday each month. Also be sure to visit The Winchester on April 8th and check out an indie/art rock band called Yes Sir Boss.

Yes Sir Boss

The Westbourne Pub also continues to put on musicians at the weekend, it’s a fun vibrant place to enjoy a drink and live music. It is the kind of place you can enjoy moving your feet and hips and yet feel safe and enjoy a chat with your friends. It is a great place to spend your weekend evenings after a day of sport or shopping. If you want to get up and play yourself, just five minutes out of Westbourne is The Branksome Railway Hotel. On two Fridays a month they run open mic nights. A good place to showcase your skills and meet like-minded musicians. Flat 13 Records at 9 St Michaels Road, BH2 5DP, are putting on a show of local artists on April 17th at Sixty Million Postcards. Full details are yet to be confirmed but I have been promised big artists. If you can’t make the gig, visit the store as they have a huge array of vinyls and you will be coming out with bags full of rare goodies. Get Aaron’s Free Album Finally I have made my album free as a gift to all those who have taken interest in my page over the last year. The feedback has been fantastic and I wanted to give something back in return. Download it for free from www.aarongregorymusic.bandcamp.com Thanks very much for your support, have a wonderful start to your spring.
