Westbourne News News from Westbourne, Branksome & West Cliff

New Co-Op Planned for Westbourne The vacant pub and Centre Stage building on Queens Road is to be converted into a new convenience store by Co-operative Group Food Ltd. A Supply of Alcohol application has been made to the council in the name of the proposed Co-op store.

The venue was previously the Pig and Whistle Boarded Up pub and for a short time even the cabaret venue Rubyz Lounge. Since September last year the building has been boarded up. There is a large pay and display car park adjacent and an existing convenience store opposite. Centre Stage closing as a live music venue was a sad loss for Westbourne as An existing Co-Op groups including the Bournemouth Folk Club, Chicken Soup Choir and jazz club have relocated further afield.

You can make representations to the council in writing by the 25th January to the Planning & Licensing Authority at Bournemouth Town Hall.

New Food Waste Bin Collections - Q&A From March 2014, Bournemouth Council is operating a new food waste collection. To answer your questions they are arranging a Q&A with ‘Waste Awareness Officers’ at Westbourne Library on the 13th February from 2pm 5pm. They can answer all your questions and queries about the service as well as any other waste and recycling related queries you may have.

Food waste collections will be for all houses with the standard Big Bin, Little Bin arrangement. Flats with larger shared use bins are being asked to opt in to receive food waste collections. The new service will allow residents to recycle all cooked and uncooked food waste which, once collected, will be composted locally into a nutrient rich soil improver and the gases produced from the process will be used to generate electricity.

The Ever Changing Face of the Westbourne High Street We are sad to report the recent closure of Blockbuster and Broadview Blinds. Also the Mind-Body-Spirit shop will be closing on the 25th January, after 12 years in Westbourne. Despite reports of the recovery, trading is still tough and we always encourage everyone to shop local.

However, overall shop occupancy is still at over 94% with very few empty units across Westbourne. The high street is always changing and we’d like to welcome new businesses opened recently including Mlinko Hair and Beauty (see page 14) and JoJo Maman Bébé, both on Poole Road.

UK Dance Championship 2014 to be held in Bournemouth

The UK Dance Championship 2014 is taking place in Bournemouth on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd January 2014. The national event is held in the Windsor Hall at the Bournemouth International Centre.

Categories in the competition include Amateur Rising Star Ballroom & Latin, Professional Rising Star Ballroom & Latin, Amateur Latin, Professional Ballroom, Amateur Ballroom and Professional Latin.

Chines Form Part of New Bournemouth Seaf Bournemouth seafront’s world-class vision revealed

Alum, Middle and Durley Chines are part of Bournemouth’s most important asset, the seafront. Over 5 million people visit each year.

Much of the seafront infrastructure is over 50 years old and not up to international standards found at other beach resorts. As well as providing enhanced facilities for locals to enjoy, the new strategy will help to secure and grow the tourism sector, which currently employs over 11,000 people.

The council has revealed comprehensive and wide ranging plans to make our seafront world class. There are plans for changes from Alum Chine to Hengistbury Head and the full set of plans can be found on the www.bournemouth.gov.uk website. We’ve had a look at the documents

Westbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

As the New Year hangover is wearing off attentions are turn to a fun filled and prosperous 2014. And prosperous and fun filled it promises to be in regards to exciting developments on the local music scene of Bournemouth in the coming months. In Westbourne some exciting gigs have been lined up to start off the New Year.

At the Westbourne Pub itself, live music takes place every Friday and Saturday night. The Westbourne personally hand pick bands for your enjoyment focusing on getting punters up and dancing to covers of songs you know with the finest tribute acts. It is definitely worth popping in and checking out what’s on.

Just 10 minutes walk from Westbourne is The Winchester. The Winchester has fantastic events going on and it has rightly earned itself the reputation of one of Bournemouth’s premier live venues. In the past great acts such as Benjamin Francis Leftwich, John Cooper Clarke, Ghostpoet, Pretty Visitors, Yoofs and Will and the People have graced the stage so it is definitely worth checking out what is going on. A highlight for techno fans on February 7th is techno legend Eat Static. The Winchester is delighted with this booking as Eat Static is a true pioneer of the genre has been rocking psychedelic electronic beats since 1988. This truly is going to be a big party not to miss.

In the heart of Westbourne is Rock Restaurant. Rock is a fantastic eatery and is worth booking a table anyway just for the fresh pastas they have on offer, they are head spinningly delicious. Not only are they a good eatery though, they also regularly book bands and acoustic acts to wow their diners. It is a great night with top music and food, definitely worth trying.

Another great gig not far out of Westbourne is at Sixty Million Postcards on February 15th as Cloud Control come to town.

Cloud Control Cloud Control play sparse, delicate, indie pop and will be a great watch for anyone who is a fan of Foals or Bombay Bicycle Club. National media are raving about them at the moment so they are definitely worth a watch.
