Happy New Year from the Westbourne Magazine

Happy New Year and welcome to the first 2013 edition of the Westbourne Magazine. With this edition we enter our fourth year and I am delighted to have been editing this magazine as Westbourne has gone from strength to strength. Our cover shows less than a quarter of all the amazing shop fronts in Westbourne and my article on page 4 has more on why Westbourne seems to be recession-proof. Also in this edition we have interviews with new owners of local businesses and find out about a hidden gem, a top quality, exclusive gym right in the middle of Westbourne (see page 12).

99% Shop Occupancy in Westbourne As we enter an uncertain financial 2013, one indicator of local prosperity is the occupancy rate of shop units in the area. As we went to print at the end of 2012, Westbourne could boast almost full occupancy, with just 2 empty units and 1 of them under offer. For the first time in over a decade all units in our Westbourne Arcade are filled and the mix of shops has never been more interesting and varied. Putting this magazine together we talk to a huge number of local businesses. While business owners confirm trading conditions are tough, the number of long standing, independent traders in Westbourne is testament to their successful operation and the popularity of Westbourne as a shopping destination. Will Westbourne prove to be truly recession-proof and fill those last 2 units? We’d love to report that in the next edition but only time will tell what 2013 will bring to Westbourne. A permanent fish monger and general stationers are still often requested by readers. New Debra Shop A new DEBRA charity shop has opened at 61A Seamoor Road. It was opened officially on 17 December by Epidermolysis Bullosa patient, four year old Mason White. DEBRA is the only national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa – a rare genetic skin blistering condition which causes the skin to shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously. Area Manager Penny Weston told us, "I’d like to thank our volunteers and everyone who came to help set up the shop. We always need more volunteers to help in the shop. We’re a friendly bunch and new helpers will receive a warm welcome.” If you’d like to get involved, call the store on 01202 759424.

same great fruit and veg!

64 Seamoor Road has been a greengrocer for more years than most of us can remember and since November has been in the capable hands of Ray and Lorraine. With a background in retail and from a family of grocers, Ray and Lorraine were delighted to take on one of Westbourne’s most popular stores. Lorraine told us about the move to Dorset, “We moved from Buckinghamshire to Westbourne and have enjoyed a warm welcome from the locals. We’re lucky to have such a friendly and supportive existing customer base and are getting to know all the regular faces now.” Much of the produce in store is locally sourced from Dorset and Hampshire based farms and includes the much sort after Purbeck blueberrys, Flint honey and Stan’s tomatoes. Ray and Lorraine have extended the range available in store including organic vegetables, free range eggs, bird seed and lots of other kitchen essentials. Vegi Deli Range Fruits of the Forest also stock the Vegi Deli range of gourmet food for discerning vegetarians and vegans – and it’s very popular with meat-eaters too! From amazingly realistic ‘duck’ and lip-smacking southern fried ‘chicken’ to tasty falafel and spicy Thai ‘fish’ cakes, Redwood’s Vegi Deli range is deliciously different. Produced from natural ingredients, Vegi Deli meals are free from animal products, cholesterol, hydrogenate fats, artificial colours/preservatives and GMOs. Much of the range is kosher and halal certified and suitable for home freezing too.

Hello Village Bistro

from Avril and Bob

In December Westbourne waved goodbye to the old Troy and hello to the new Village Bistro at 42e Poole Road. We met the new owners Avril and Bob to find out more about their plans for one of the area’s most popular eateries. “We spent a good eight months looking for the perfect business to take on and saw options from Cornwall to Kent but were so glad to find this one in Westbourne, an area we’ve always loved.” explained Avril. “We’re lucky to have a great bunch of regulars who have been very supportive during the transition. Julie (in photo on left) has worked here for over 2 years and knows many of our customers by name. We’re also very pleased to be welcoming new regulars all the time too!”, added Bob who can usually be found slaving over a hot stove and is responsible for many of the tasty home-cooked dishes on offer. The Village Bistro now offers daily specials, a Sunday roast dinner for just £6.95 and they continue the famous Full English with tea/coffee for £4.95. They also have a full alcohol licence and are open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights for evening dinner service. Booking is available but not essential. So, if you haven’t visited recently, why not pop in and try out the special offers on the next page? Stitch and Bitch! On Monday and Tuesday evenings the Village Bistro is open for friendly ‘Stitch and Bitch’ sessions. These famous social knitting groups started during World War II and continue to be popular 60 years on but with a crafty twist too! Come along from 7pm - 9pm for tea/coffee/wine and a bite to eat. Our woolly friends on the left and other craft gifts are available to buy in Village Bistro too!

Your Optimum Physique from £10 Westbourne based studio

We met up with Peter Jawor, founder of Optimum Physique, to find out more about Bournemouth’s first exclusive personal training service - right in the heart of Westbourne on Milburn Road. Peter explained what kind of service we could expect at Optimum Physique, “Every client has different fitness needs so we offer each individual their own personalized programme. Each programme aims to give you maximum results in the minimum amount of time while enhancing movement precision and efficiency during both exercise and your daily routine. After just a few sessions, clients will feel a boost in their energy levels and an overall improvement in all physical aspects of their day to day lives.” “All our workouts are designed to be highly metabolic (encouraging fat breakdown) with added benefit of providing cardiac conditioning as well” he continued. Optimum Physique offers highly cost effective semi-personal training with more individual attention from the trainer compared to a standard fitness class. The classes are planned in advance, professionally taught and modified according to the personal needs and ability of each individual. Training is offered on an individual basis or in small groups of up to 6 people. It’s just £10 per person for a small group session lasting an hour. Peter is currently offering free consultations. Book yours on 07984 607555 and begin 2013 as you mean to go on! See the website for scheduled group sessions.

Symptoms of a Frozen Shoulder from Ann Runyard

As a Bowen practitioner this fascinating technique never fails to excite me. I love its diversity and it challenges me constantly, which keeps me on my toes. For instance, a client presenting with signs and symptoms of a frozen shoulder may/may not, after three weeks treatment, have improved. Why is this? Firstly, the client is individual as is their pain; therefore both need to be treated accordingly. Secondly, Bowen travels where it is most needed as in underlying issues. It is normal to expect some kind of improvement after three weeks. So this lateral approach of mine has led me to consider the involvement of the Gall Bladder Meridian which, in my opinion, has given some credence to recover or not to recover. I have written about meridians before (see my blog page), this particular energy line is one of the longest and is partnered with the Liver Meridian. It starts in the toe and travels up the lateral side of the body, through the shoulder and neck to the head. Its maximum energy time is between 11pm-1am. I have considered, on two separate occasions recently, the possible involvement of this meridian with shoulder problems. I would like to stress, this has little scientific value other than the outcome of a referral to the GP when a blood test revealed a raised cholesterol level. It is important to state that not all similar conditions are necessarily linked. The second instant, noticed on correlation when taking the medical history. My client was undergoing conventional treatment for raised cholesterol and during a Bowen treatment this meridian was identified in the shoulder and knee area, both was troublesome. As one year draws to an end and another begins, make a wish for better health and experience the Bowen technique.

20% off during January and February 2013. Call Ann to find out more on 01202 760492.

CHINES - DID YOU KNOW? A chine is a steep-sided river valley where a river/stream flows to the sea through soft eroding coastal cliffs of sandstone or clays. The word chine originates from the Saxon "Cinan" meaning a gap or yawn. The word is almost exclusively used in central Devon, Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Can't Get to a library? If you can’t get to a local library during bad weather, you can renew books online at www.bournemouth.gov.uk/libraries Icy/Dangerous Roads? In Bournemouth a team of five gritters are ready to go with 1800 tonnes of road salt and are ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep the traffic moving when weather conditions dictate. You can follow the gritters on Twitter @bournemouthbc Stay Warm To keep warm and well during spells of cold weather: • Draw your curtains at dusk and keep your doors closed to block out draughts. • Have regular hot drinks and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter. • Wear several light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer). • Keep as active in your home as possible. • Wrap up warm and wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside on cold days. Flu Season Flu symptoms can hit suddenly and severely. They usually include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles. You can often get a cough and sore throat. Because flu is caused by a virus and not bacteria, antibiotics won't treat it. See your GP to arrange flu jabs. Exercising in the Cold? As the temperatures drop you may be tempted to hang up your exercise gear and hibernate. Don't! Stay active throughout winter to beat those seasonal blues. Regular exercise will make you feel more energetic, which should make it a little easier to get out of your warm bed on cold mornings. Moderate exercise can strengthen the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of coughs and colds. Find out more online: www.nhs.uk/Livewell

Valentine’s Day Facts Cupid is associated with Valentine's Day because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid holds a bow and arrows as he is believed to use magical arrows to arouse feelings of love. In Korea, if you do not receive any gift on Valentine's day then all the singles go to restaurants and eat black noodles to mourn their single status. Wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Valentine's Day in Wales. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite Valentine decorations on the wooden spoons. This Valentine decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!" Of the 73% of people who buy Valentine's Day flowers are men, while only 27% are women.

A single perfect red rose framed with baby's breath is named by some florists as a "signature rose," and is the preferred choice for most for giving on Valentine's Day, anniversaries and birthdays. The red rose was the favourite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The colour red stands for strong romantic feelings making the red rose the flower of love. In olden times some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on the Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

and finally, maybe not so romantic... could I thought that I r, love no othe et until, that is, I m r. he ot br ur yo

I love your I see your face when face, and smile, your I am dreaming, your eyes, damn, I'm that's why I always good telling lies! at wake up screaming.
