It’s our pleasure to bring you a fresh new comedy from one of Canada’s hottest new playwrights, Kristen Da Silva.
Several years ago, a funny thing happened in Canadian theatre (or a not so funny thing)—we had a “brain drain”, where many playwrights stopped writing for the stage, and turned their talents to television. While the result has been a golden era of TV comedy and drama, with Canadian playwrights at the forefront of many outstanding TV series, it seemed we were short a generation of writers who brought amusing, insightful comedies to Canadian stages.
In recent years we’ve seen a resurgence, with playwrights such as Mark Crawford and Ms. Da Silva writing comedies with heart and topical relevance, featuring expertly drawn and recognizable characters. These are all people we know, whether it’s from the curling club down the street, the Friday night card game, Happy Hours, or the company watercooler. These plays succeed because of their characters: their joys and struggles, foibles and relationships are identifiable, down-to-earth, and very, very funny.
We’re also proud to be able to showcase the work of so many wonderful Kamloops artists in this production, from director to designers to cast. As our city grows, we are attracting and keeping so many terrific artists to live and work in our community. As always, we thank you, the audience, for supporting WCT in our efforts to continue to provide world-class theatre made right here at home.
Enjoy.
Advance KFF tickets and passes are available online and at the Paramount Theatre (503 Victoria Street) during open hours. For open hours and to become a KFS Member (for extra discounts) please see thekfs.ca

I never grew up with sports or any kind of costly extracurricular activity. I was an arts nerd because being a part of the high school drama club was free and that’s what my parents could afford. I first encountered curling during the 2010 Olympics. I intentionally left my tiny Vancouver attic apartment on 12th and Main St. and took a trip to Hawaii to escape the mayhem. At that time, I enjoyed the beach during the day and at night I found myself spending a good deal of time in a hotel room watching… curling! While I was in that lei-filled, fishbowl drink paradise, I became obsessed with watching matches and, when I returned to Vancouver during the closing ceremonies, I couldn’t believe I had squandered the opportunity to walk just a few blocks up the street to experience curling fever.
As in sport, in my work as a theatre artist—and as a human—relationships, communication, and camaraderie are at the forefront. In all instances, we come together to experience a live exchange—one where we have ups and downs, where sometimes we sweep so hard and the rock is so close but doesn’t hit, and other times where the rock hits so hard that we miss the contact we need in order to meaningfully succeed. Missed connections, misunderstood communication—we are always on that slippery ice that we try so hard to control but just can’t.
At the core, to me, this is a show about love. Love for curling, yes. But also, romantic love, love of friends, love for home, love for community, and love of one’s own self. In a close-knit community such as Kamloops, more than a few tens of thousands of people larger than the tiny town of Stayner, Ontario, I am reminded of how the sport of curling represents the bonspiel of life. We can’t always control it, but sometimes, if we hurry hard, we may just hit the button. And if we don’t quite make it, we can always throw again.
After more than a century of being in business, it’s clear that Wayside is more than just printing. We bring ideas to life with creative visual solutions through print, signs, displays, and online services.

Hurry Hard is far from the first sports show to cross WCT’s stages. Recently, we have explored winter sports with shows such as Glory–a world premiere about the Preston Rivulets hockey team–from our 2017-2018 Season, and The New Canadian Curling Club from our 2019-2020 Season. Another curlingbased play, The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon, was featured, not once, but twice at WCT (1983 & 1996). Hurry Hard is a show that promises to bring the same camaraderie, hilarity, and heart that these past sports shows have shown us.
Arts and sports have typically been on either end of the entertainment industry, but both are rooted in the same practice; to provide a performance, showcase the human spirit, and build community. Excitement. A thrill. Any sports fanatic or theatre enthusiast can tell you about the excitement they feel when sitting in an audience, surrounded by those with a love for the sport, on the edge of their seat with anticipation for the show to begin.
Both performances take you on a journey, one with highs of scoring goals and lows of seeing our heroes knocked down. We watch those we cheer for pick themselves up and dust themselves off, win or lose. Regardless, we feel proud of what we were there to see and leave with a feeling of satisfaction. Whether the outcome was what we wanted or not, we leave feeling content in what we’ve witnessed and that we got to share it with those around us.
Like a sports game, every theatre performance is different. As hard as we try to maintain the same show night after night, every production is different because every audience is different. Some nights, there are loud laughers in the audience and other nights, everyone remains quiet with anticipation or suspense. These live performances are about the people that surround you as much as they are about the game.

We are so fortunate to live in a city that supports the arts as much as they support the sports industry. WCT hopes to continue to foster a relationship with the athletic organizations in the community and the groups that continue to come into our city. We are grateful to partner with various organizations, including the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the annual Canadian women’s curling championship, and the Kamloops Blazers, the beloved local junior ice hockey team.
We look forward to bringing you these sports shows that continue to delight Kamloops audiences. Hurry Hard is a comedic, heartwarming journey that is sure to have you believing in second chances. Please enjoy this sure-to-be curling classic, featuring a cast and creative team full of local artists and have a bonspiel of a good time.
