1916 Commemoration Celebrations in Dingle Richard Williams The 1916 Commemoration Celebrations in Dingle will be coordinated under the umbrella of the local Business Chamber with the cooperation of all the other interested groups in the area. It is intended to organise a series of events over a period of a week commencing with the St Patricks Day Parade the theme of which will relate to the 100 years since the famous Rising which changed the course of Irish History forever. The Library will play host to a few lectures/talks to highlight the display there of clothing and articles belonging to Thomas Ashe one of the West Kerry heroes of that time. All national and secondary schools in the Peninsula will be invited to enter either an essay or poetry competition for varying age groups or undertake research on the West Kerry people who lost their lives during or in the period after the 1916 Rising. Dingle GAA Club plan to hold an open Family Day in Pairc An Aghasaigh over the St Patricks weekend to honour their famous patron after whom the pitch is named and possibly incorporate a 7 a side competition over the same weekend. It is hoped to have an Ecumenical Service in St James Church and a tour of the adjoining graveyard where both Catholics and other religious believers are buried side by side and incorporate the great reconciliation strides that have taken place in this country over the past 100 years. Other ideas being discussed include a concert to reflect the music, song and dance of 100 years ago, a new garden somewhere in town to honour the 100 year anniversary and the repair of the railings in front of the Mall Statues which are dedicated to those who lost their lives in the struggle. The Commemoration events at national level will probably take precedent over the Easter Weekend so that is the main reason the Dingle Celebrations will be held the previous week. Ideas or proposals for other events will be most welcome but we must stress that the Dingle efforts will be organised solely on a non political basis.

Killorglin Tidy Towns. Orna Eccles Big Congrats are in order for one of our committee members who has recently been appointed as information provider & centre Coordinator for The Killorglin Citizen Information Centre. He succeeds Nora O' Connor who held the position for 5 years, all the best Nora on a happy retirement. Killorglin Citizens Information centre is located in the CYMS Hall, it's open Mon-Fri 9:30-1:00. He can be contacted by phone on 0761 07 7830 or email Killorglin.cic@citinfo.ie Autumn is once again very much upon us and this is my most favorite seasons. Some people call autumn, "fall," which refers to the leaves falling off the trees during this season. The falling of the leaves begins when the leaves change colors and go from being green, to burning red, golden yellow and vivid orange. Now that our swallows and swifts have long gone and flown thousands of miles away to Africa for the winter months we can concentrate more on the owl activity. To date we are proud to announce the addition of 3 baby owls (chicks) which we are keeping close tabs on.If you are aware of owl activity in your area please make contact with any one of the Tidy Towns Committee. This past Saturday some of crew attended to the the Goat Monument area which was in major need of TLC. I'm sure when driving past you can see a huge difference. Others blitzed the town and gathered quite a lot of litter, all in all a very productive day was had by all. Our manpower is pretty skeleton these weeks as families are returning to school and others pretty hectic with their own personal lives so I'm asking all businesses and homeowners in the town to please keep your own front of house litter and weed free. Take a look as you enter your place of work in the morning. Ask yourself is there anything you can do to improve the look. Come on folks you can pick, sweep and bin the litter too. If everyone made an extra effort and were more vigilant of what's going on around you the Tidy Towns Crew could tend to more pressing issues. Lets all be more positive and don't leave the work load to someone else. As you all are aware the 1 & 2 cent copper coins are soon to be out of circulation so if you are wondering what you can do with them Think Big Outside the Box and put them into The Tidy Towns Boxes which are in all the businesses around town. We can certainly put them to good use. We have now changed to Saturday mornings for the winter months. We meet by the monument in the Fair Field @ 10am till noon. Come along with whatever cleaning tools you have at home. Gloves, brushes, shovels, pickers, weed scrapers, and most importantly a good smile. Tell your friends and neighbours perhaps who are not on Facebook to come along. Continue to follow us on facebook for the latest and upcoming work being done in your area. Like and share to spread the good news. Any questions call Orna on 087 9871807. Slainte Cill Orglan AbĂş !!

Farming News

Louis Murchan

GLAS II is Imminent For the second tranche of GLAS, a number of adjustments to the available actions are being made. Some, such as those to protect farmland birds and Natura land, will make it easier for farmers to adapt to the new regimes required, and will encourage even greater uptake of these measures. Others respond to the fact that we have achieved or exceeded targets in some areas such as Low Input Permanent Pasture (LIPP), new hedgerows and traditional orchards. GLAS is a target-driven environmental scheme and from tranche-totranche we will be adjusting the menu of options to ensure we achieve the right mix over the course of the programme as a whole . The top priority remains to attract in farmers with Tier One Environmental Assets, like endangered birds, Natura habitat, commonage land and highstatus watercourses. It is expected that a large proportion of the intake from Tranche 2 will be drawn from this category. The Terms and Conditions for the second Tranche of GLAS will be published soon, along with the detailed Specification for Tranche 2 actions. Farmers are asked to read these carefully. The live system for applications will then be opened will remain open for some six weeks. The first tranche of GLAS, which closed on 26 May this year, proved a huge success, attracting almost 27,000 applications. The second tranche will increase this to at least 35,000 and up to 40,000. The overall target for GLAS is to attract 50,000 farmers into the new scheme over its lifetime and it was clear that GLAS was well on its way to achieving this target. In relation to the first tranche of GLAS, some of the headline outcomes were as follows: 180,000 ha of permanent pasture will be conserved 8,000 km of water courses will be protected 40,000 ha of endangered bird habitat will be brought under sustainable management 50,000 ha of other privately-owned Natura habitat will be protected 2,700 commonages (nearly 60% of all commonages in the country) will be brought under new Commonage Management Plans 1,300km of new hedgerows will be planted 2,000 new groves of native trees will be established 1,000 new orchards of traditional Irish varieties will be planted 6,000 km of stone walls will be protected 6,000 new habitats will be created for threatened solitary bee species 90,000 bird boxes and 80,000 bat boxes will be erected 3,000 archaeological monuments will be protected 8,000 ha of wild bird cover will be planted, providing up to 12,000 tonnes of winter feed for wild birds. On the basis of the 27,000 GLAS plans submitted to date, we have already met or exceeded RDP targets for Low Input Permanent Pasture, Protection of Watercourses, Laying Hedgerows, Planting New Hedgerows, Planting of Traditional Orchards, Bird, Bee and Bat Habitats, Wild Bird Cover and Stone Wall Maintenance. For the second tranche of GLAS, a number of adjustments to the available actions are being made. Scottish Derogation and National Reserve Farmers that applied for the above schemes are getting letters from the department of Agriculture requesting more information. In relation to the Scottish Derogation they are looking for proff that you kept sheep or grew crops during the year. They are looking for receipts to back this up and dispatch dockets to prove that sheep were bought or sold. The national reserve section are looking for copies of lease agreements and income details. In relation to the leases it is very important that the lease was set up before the application was submitted Sheep Fencing included for grant aid Sheep fencing will now be eligible for grant aid under the TAMS II scheme, the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney confirmed following the announcement Budget today. The Minister for Agriculture had come under sustained pressure over the initial exclusion of sheep fencing from the TAMS II grant schemes. However, Budget 2016 has seen a €35.8m allocation for TAMS II which will also provide funding for the 12 West Kerry Live

Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme which will be at the higher grant rate of 60%. Also benefitting from the scheme will be Dairy equipment, Organic Capital Investments, Pig and Poultry and as already stated Sheep fencing. It will also provide funding for the recently opened Animal Welfare, Safety and Nutrient Storage Scheme and the Low Emission Slurry Spreading Scheme (LESS). The funding of these schemes will encourage the sustainable development of Irish agriculture by providing a range of new investment opportunities to Irish farmers. Further details of what of what will exactly be covered under the sheep fencing element has yet to be confirmed by the Department. Sheep handling equipment is already among the items eligible for grant aid under the new TAMS II farm investment schemes. Under the scheme, farmers will be able to avail of grant aid of 40% with eligible young farmers entitled to grant aid of 60% for the equipment. The move to allow sheep fencing as an eligible item for the grant aid has been generally welcomed by both the IFA and the ICSA. Beef Data and Genomics Programme Suckler farmers should pay more attention to the euro value of the Eurostar rating rather than the actual number of stars, as this will make it a lot easier going forward to make the correct breeding decisions. The process of selecting a bull from the replacement index is simple maths Farmers need to move away from thinking about four or five-star and we need to start thinking about the euro aspect. It is going to be a lot easier going forward if you look at the euro value, once a cow hits €74 she will be classified as four-star. The Eurostar rating may well be meaningless within the breed, especially for those looking to purchase a stock bull to breed replacement heifers in a commercial herd. There is also a danger that a stock bull’s value can drop significantly between the time of conception and calf birth. As a result of this increased risk of figure change, he added, that there has been an increase in AI use onfarm as a result of the new Genomics Scheme. This has occurred as there are bulls with very high replacement indexes available from AI which will produce calves suitable for the scheme from relatively low star cows. The big advantage of going the AI route is that that some bulls can contribute huge values to the calf. The reliability of the bull available may also be higher than the stock present onfarm. Minister Coveney Outlines the Next Steps for the Hen Harrier Locally Led Agri-Environment Scheme The Minster for Agriculture, Food & the Marine Mr Simon Coveney TD provided an update today on the progress made so far by his Department in supporting farmers in designated Hen Harriers areas. He referred to the extensive actions already taken and outlined a new measure to be developed under the new Locally Led Agri-Environment Schemes (LLAES) which is currently being developed. By way of background, the Minister said that he has already provided for priority access for farmers with Hen Harrier land under the GLAS, and those farmers could earn up to €7,000 per annum through a combination of GLAS and GLAS plus. DAFM intend to introduce a further measure under the Locally Led Agri-Environment Scheme to cater for those farmers who are farming large tracts of Hen Harrier Land. It was emphasised that such farmers should join GLAS – the second tranche of which has now opened to applications. By joining GLAS now farmers in Hen Harrier areas are assuring themselves of benefiting from the generous payments under that scheme. Farmers with large tracts of hen harrier designated land will then be eligible to also apply for the new LLAES measure when it is up and running. If all those farmers with Hen Harrier land applied, this would amount to more than €23m per annum for Hen Harrier actions alone in GLAS and GLAS plus. The previous Farmland Birds Scheme operated by the Department of Arts Heritage & Gaeltacht was paying out approximately €3.5m per annum for all farmland birds. This is a major increase in public funding for this important conservation action being undertaken by farmers. This new locally led agri-environment scheme will be included in the application for an amendment of Ireland’s RDP which is to be lodged with the EU Commission next Spring. This first phase of the new LLAES will include action on The Burren, the pearl mussel, and the new hen harrier measure. The possibilities for early introduction of an upland peats measure are also being examined. The Department is now engaged in detailed consultation with all the stakeholders and encourages all those interested to participate fully in this consultation process. The Department has said that it has agreed with Forestry that work on the forestry aspects of the Hen Harrier Threat Response Plan would be accelerated. The intention here is to give clarity to land owners about where afforestation planting is possible and to avoid any restrictions that are not necessary and beneficial from an environmental perspective. Meat Matters Scarier than Halloween! Irene Ní Fhlannúra The latest updates on processed meats and red meat consumption has made quite an impact in the news this week. All interested parties from the World Health Organization (WHO), the researchers, the meat producers and Food Safety Authorities have had much to say about the recent revelation which confirms the link between the consumption of processed meats and red meat to colorectal cancer (bowel cancer). This comes to us, not through any new breakthrough in bowel cancer research, but through the collection and examination of numerous studies carried out over recent years. The WHO do not issue warnings lightly nor do they label something as carcinogenic (cancer-causing) without carefully examining all the facts. We only have to look back a couple of decades to see how the tobacco industry handled similar findings. The WHO were criticized for not issuing health warnings for tobacco products sooner. In their defense, they were met with much resistance from a powerful tobacco industry who questioned the validity of their findings and attempted to discredit the research of that time. Today, no-one doubts the link between tobacco smoking and cancer and although the incidence of bowel cancer due to processed meats is considered less a risk – it is an unnecessary risk all the same. There is a danger that here too, within our own agricultural and meat industry, information will be thwarted and research discredited in response to these findings and the opportunity to put health back on the kitchen table postponed yet again to protect vested interests within the food sector. As with most food scares, debate from all sides will be on-going, noisy and probably lead to even more confusion. In the meantime, there are many practical measures that you can take to reduce the risk of bowel cancer being served up in your kitchen. According to the latest studies, 90% of bowel cancer risk is due to diet with 10% due to genetic factors. The typical Solar western diet of refined and processed food lacks fibre and Systems nutrients to keep bowels healthy. For us Irish, who take such pride in our beef and lamb industry, this has ruffled a few feathers to say the least. The WHO did stress that red meat had some health benefits as a major source of iron, zinc and B12 and suggested that we limit our consumption to less than 500g per person per week.

There will be more reports, more evidence, more facts to digest and as a result more uncertainty surrounding our food choices. Just keep it simple! the sun shines on it. Finally, those of all faiths and none are welcome to go on pilgrimage on our pilgrim path, walking the ancient trail of our ancestors. From the Cross, one can see The Skelligs, Mount Brandon, The Blasket Islands, Dingle Bay, Dingle Town, Cahersiveen Town, The Beara Peninsula, Corrán Tuathail, Mullaghanattin, Valentia Island, Kenmare Bay and Drung Hill.

The Canon’s Cross on the summit of Cnoc na dTobar, looks down on Dingle bay and Valentia Harbour. It is six metres tall and was built in 1888, at the request of local Parish Priest, Canon Timothy Brosnan. He also decided to construct fourteen concrete and stone Stations of the Cross along the ancient Pre-Christian pilgrim path aligned with the Skellig Islands. The trail is now fully way marked. Most of these stations are visable from across the Bay in the Dingle Peninsula. There is an altar at the cross where mass is celebrated at least twice a year. The cross also hosts a multidenominational prayer service on national pilgrim path day every year. It was badly damaged by lightening in the 1950’s and was repaired in the 1950’s and 1980’s, back in those days all materials was transported by horse. In 2014, the cross was in very poor condition yet it survived the severe storm in February of that year. In September 2014, local volunteers decided to restore it, raising much needed funds. A helicopter transported materials to the cross. This event made RTÉ and TG4 news, enthusiastically recorded by Seán Mac an tSíthigh. It was then carefully restored by skilled tradesmen, volunteering their time, using traditional scud plastering, combined with modern construction methods and materials. This specialised conservation work has ensured that the cross can withstand the extreme conditions that frequently exist on the mountain’s summit. Earlier this year, a group of pilgrims carried two litres of white paint in used milk bottles, depositing them at the summit. The cross was subsequently painted and sealed, protecting it from the wild Atlantic weather. The volunteers’ hard work has ensured that the white cross can be clearly seen on a clear day, from the Skelligs to Dingle, especially when

Room For Some Positivity In The Wake Of Rugby Defeat Tadhg Evans It’s difficult to pen a positive article on Irish rugby when you’re recuperating from the most humbling of losses. The pretence that proceeds every Irish World Cup venture has become a staple of the competition’s build up at this stage, and has almost become as overpowering as England’s false optimism ahead of soccer’s main event. As a result of this, winning and losing tends to lure in only the most militant of opinions. Victory pushes all negativity through the mesh of the sieve, leaving us with a sickly sweet blend of haughtiness. Defeat simply offers a cup of what the George Foreman grill has judged to be surplus. So in the aftermath of our World Cup departure, a healthy dose of realism when meeting NUIG Rugby’s club captain Eoin Casserly might came as something of a refreshment. With 70 players aligned with the club between their men’s, women’s and under-20’s teams, the club can provide a reasonably decent picture of where rugby’s future generations could be harvested from. The game has traditionally been penned inside the borders of our nation’s cities, but Casserly maintains that the success experienced by Irish teams in the Six Nations Championship over the last fifteen years or so is helping the game to annex these imaginary constraints. ‘’Within our own club, our players come from all corners of the country, some from places that you would never have associated with rugby before. It can be seen from underage club competitions and upwards. In Connacht, we now see a lot of players coming in from clubs outside of the cities who’ve played rugby at a high level. And while I think the strongholds of Irish rugby will always maintain their standing, there are many other places that are catching up quickly.’’ When you consider the popularity of Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne, maybe we can see a certain amount of truth in his statement closer to home. The club, who recently featured in Land Rover’s ‘We Believe in Real’ campaign as Europe’s most westerly club, has enjoyed success since its foundation in 1999, and could hardly be further from the urban image associated with Irish rugby. The widening of the game’s support base has seen its number of registered players growing from 90,000 to 150,000 over these last ten years. It’s also arguable that Rugby’s hopes of expansion have been compromised by its close relationship with fee paying schools, who have dominated the country’s schools’ cups. However much ‘Ireland’s Call’ likes to present a picture of unity, the game has struggled to shed its image as something of an elitist sport on Irish terrain. Even recently, pundit George Hook maintained that this perception still exists and that the claim actually shoulders some merit. Casserly admitted that this is still something of an issue, but reiterated the game’s progress in annexing territories beyond its traditional enclaves. ‘The game is still dominated by the traditional rugby playing schools. It’s very difficult to match their level of resources, coaching and commitment, particularly in the younger age groups. But I believe underage club rugby has come on leaps and bounds over the past 15 years, and that’s heartening.’ But whatever about the game’s progression in terms of popularity, Ireland’s deflating defeat to Argentina contributed greatly towards a dispiriting weekend for European rugby. The consensus following a weekend of sporting study suggests that the nations north of the equator are trailing the likes of South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and now Argentina in terms of excellence, and that Ireland are as guilty of miscalculation as the other tier one nations in Europe. Casserly does not deviate from the main20 West Kerry Live

stream appraisal of our shortcomings. He points to an overemphasis on weights session, to the detriment of skill. This is an error that is not being mirrored in the Southern Hemisphere. ‘New Zealand and Argentina are playing a style that is ultimately the way forward for rugby. From schoolboy days in the Northern Hemisphere, everything is about how much weight you can lift. In New Zealand and Argentina, they’ve moved away from fielding 15 bulky players, favouring refined, slimmed down troops. They also play what’s in front of them, as opposed to sticking rigidly to one dimensional game plans. There are other factors contributing to the Southern Hemisphere’s superiority, but these are certainly the main ones that need to be addressed.’ Change is necessary, but at least the foundation is there, and it’s a sound one. The game has found favour in less traditional surroundings, and that’s something patently positive. Casserly has italicised the presence of players from outside the game’s traditional powerbases to underline this point. However doleful our exit from England 2015 and the failure to earn a semi-final slot may have been, the future for the game on this island is one gleaming with potential. Maybe Japan 2019 doesn’t seem so far away when you think positively.

A few editions back we wrote about our plans of walking a combined 1000km for Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis. As a lot of people are asking us how we did we thought we would let you know: Our walk went very well, even better then we thought it would! Three years ago when we did a walk with Coco the donkey we did not expect that doing something like this was possible. Back then Jessica was struggling more with less than half the distances we did now! This time we got to the end every day without too much struggle and enjoyed the walks a lot. Of course there were some moments when we all struggled, as it is tough to walk uphill on uneven muddy paths or go for a long walk when it's raining and the nights and mornings were cold. But this never lasted all day, bad paths were always alternated with good ones, there was always sun on rainy days and the morning coldness always passed. Even the stink of smelly shoes in our tiny tent was quickly forgotten when the sun came out and we were surrounded by the beautiful French countryside. For Jessica, who has MS, the walk went well. She walked mostly with her hiking poles, although she also walked parts without or with 1 pole so she could walk with Coco. She struggled at times when the paths were uneven and muddy or when she got warm, as then her right leg doesn't work as well as it should and there are some problems with her balance. Sometimes she has trouble lifting her foot up high enough and that, in combination with big rocks, mud and her balance being a bit off, turns paths into obstacle courses for people with MS. Her walking poles saved her a few times from landing face down in the mud. After twelve days of walking an average of 23 kilometers per day we made it to the gates of Mont Saint Michel and each of us, the donkey, the dog and ourselves had walked more than 250 kilometers to get there! A great experience, very rewarding and it was extremely hopeful to know that a walk like this is possible even if you have Multiple Sclerosis. Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis has given us the tools to be well and stay active and healthy with MS. The lifestyle changes in the programme have made it possible for Jessica to achieve something that didn’t seem possible three years ago and it is giving us hope for a active future and for more adventures to come! Thank you all for your support , good wishes and donations! - Jessica & Edwin www.facebook.com/1000kmforoms www.justgiving.com/1000kmforoms

Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly Celery Seed; Apium graveolens

OIL PAINTING CLASSES

Parts used; Dried ripe see Family; Apiaceae Celery is a member of the umbelliferous Apiaceae family, along with carrots, parsley and fennel. The celery we see today originated from wild celery native to the Mediterranean, where its seeds were once highly valued as a medicine. Celery is one of those foods you either love or hate or like me remain somewhat ambivalent about. While eating the plant has many benefits it is the seeds that are primarily used in western herbalism. Fresh raw celery juice is however a beneficial cooling drink for those recovering from illness. Celery seed can be classed as a food remedy with both restorative and detoxicant actions. As a restorative the herb supports people with long-term illnesses, which overtime take their toll on a person’s overall health and stamina. As a detox remedy the herb helps to clear the blood of impurities and according to Bartram T. 1995 also has an alkalising effect on the blood, which helps with many chronic conditions. The herbs diuretic action complements any detox action as toxins are released through the urine. Chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic tiredness, low stamina and burnout can all benefit from the use of this herb. Long term stress and illness will impact on the adrenal system and celery seed is a good antidote to adrenal deficiency. The build-up of uric acid as I have mentioned before causes joint pain, arthritis and gout and the herbs anti-inflammatory action as well as its diuretic action can be of benefit for people with these chronic conditions. Celery seed is particularly indicated for gout and a decoction or tincture of celery seed and meadowsweet will greatly help to ease this painful condition.

Oil painting classes with Patsy Farr are starting again on Wed 11th Nov at 10am in the Temperance Hall, Dingle. Students of all levels of ability and experience welcome. For information, and to book a place, contact me: patsyfarr@eircom.net Tel: 086-3539535

Celery seed is also used as a urinary antiseptic and its diuretic action will help to relieve water retention and oedema. A decoction of the seed will increase milk flow in nursing mothers but the seeds should not be taken in pregnancy. Celery seed is an important food and a valued medicine in both western and Chinese herbalism. The seed is relatively inexpensive and the crushed seed simmered for ten minutes then strained is an excellent method of preparation and can be used for a range of disorders. While its main use is in the treatment of arthritic conditions and urinary tract infections it is important when treating particular conditions to speak with your herbalist regarding the combination of herbs that are best suited to your specific needs. Taking herbs on their own will help support the body and alleviate symptoms however a combination of herbs adapted to a person’s individual needs can be a more efficient and holistic approach. Preparations: fresh raw celery juice prepared in a liquidiser and blended with, for example, apple and carrot juice. Decoction; quarter to half a teaspoon bruised dry seeds to each cup of water, bring to the boil then gently simmer for ten minutes in pot, strain and drink. Vinegar tincture; 1 part bruised celery seed to 20 parts cider vinegar. Macerate (steep) for a month then strain. Dose 2-3 teaspoons daily in water. Tincture; 2-5ml three times daily Safety Considerations; Not to be taken in pregnancy as celery is a uterine stimulant. Dingle Bay Rovers U13s 8-1 St Brendan's Park 'C'

DBR U13s played in Tralee last Saturday against St Brendan's Park 'C'. We put out a strong team which ran out 8-1 winners. The team started very quickly with a well worked goal within 2 minutes that was neatly finished by Cormac O'Cinnede. Sean Leahy, man of the match for the 2nd match in row, was causing havoc down the left hand side, and the team really should have been further in front at half time with the chances he created. But DBR scored a quick goal in the second half by Tadhg Kennedy, selflessly created by Tomas O'Sé. With the wind at their backs the flood gates opened for the Dingle team. Ronan O'Beaglaoich scored the third and then Tadhg Kennedy scored his second. More goals from Sean Leahy, Tomas O'Sé and 2 from Mark Manning completed the rout. Park scored with a penalty but the result was never in doubt. The team was Patrick Saunders, Robbie Sheehy, Ben O'Brien (Capt), Tadhg Murphy, Eli Buchanan, Tomas O'Sé, Ronan O'Beaglaoich, Sean Leahy, Kieran Bambury, Cormac O'Cinnede, Mark Manning, Tadhg Kennedy, Ruairc O'Shea and Katie O'Brien. Calling all Parents The club is growing very quickly with a strong interest from boys and girls from ages 8 and upwards. We are short on parents who can help out with training so if you are interested please contact Damien on 086 381 6277 Regular updates on fixtures and results at https://www.facebook.com/dinglebayroversjuniors

Domnick Walsh Photography

The official launch of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2015 was held this week at Lee Strand, Ballymullen, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The awards scheme which first commenced in 1998 is designed to acknowledge the volunteering endeavours of young people from Kerry between the ages of 14 years and 19 years. The winners will be announced at a celebratory function in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, January 29th, 2016. Awards will be presented for the Overall Winner, Certificates of Distinction, Certificates of Merit, a Voluntary Group Award and a School Award. Speaking at the launch Chief Superintendent Pat Sullivan said he was delighted to announce details of the 2015 awards. He emphasised the importance of recognising and supporting young people who make the effort to help others in their community. He asked the Kerry public to look around their area and nominate any young person who has volunteered in any capacity over the past 12 months. He also thanked Lee Strand for the steadfast support of the Garda Youth Achievement Awards over the past 17 years and stated that the success of the awards scheme was due in no small way to that continued support. John O’Sullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand stated “Lee Strand has a strong commitment to supporting initiatives within the local community and we are delighted once again to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. The awards provide a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the voluntary efforts of the young people of Kerry, who have made a positive impact within their local community.” The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday, December 11th, 2015. Any member of the public can nominate a young person whom they feel has made a contribution to their local area. Nominations are accepted from individuals, community and voluntary groups, schools and youth clubs/organisation. The winners will be selected by a panel of five judges who are community volunteers from around the county under the chairmanship of Chief Superintendent Pat Sullivan, An Garda Siochana. Nominations are available from any Garda Station in Kerry; K.D.Y.S. Office in Tralee, Killarney and Listowel or by contacting Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102311. Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Bíonn an iomad ar siúl againn in amanna saoire. Bíonn buíonta móra cuairteoírí a thagann gan coinne ach iad an-fhiosrach. Tagann a lán acu isteach i m’oifig chugam agus is beag duine ná rabhas sa stát arb as dóibh. Cúpla lá ó shin tháinig beirt chugam agus ceannaithe an chianoirthir orthu. Ó Mheirice ab ea iad, ó San Francisco. ‘Is cuimhin liom go maith’ arsa mise ‘an chéad lá a shroiseas San Francisco, 15 Lúnasa 1965’. ‘Ní rabhas ar an saol in aon chor’ arsa duine acu, ‘agus ní ansiúd ach sa tSín a rugadh mé.’ ‘Ní rabhas riamh sa tSín’ arsa mise ‘ach is cuimhin liom go maith bheith ag léamh sa pháipéar fé na Seapánaigh a bheith ag ionsaí Sheanghai roimh an dara Cogadh Mór.’ ‘I Sheanghai a rugadh mise timpeall an ama sin.’ Bhí fonn cainte air ach chaitheas scaoileadh leis mar go raibh duine eile chugainn ag lorg faisnéise. Bhí a lán Francach againn; bíonn siadsan ag súil le Fraincis a bheith ag gach éinne. Scaipeamar a lán bróiséirí a réitigh mo sheanchara Stiofán Tribulot dúinn. Ach bhíomar an-ghnóthach sna gairdíní leis. Tá binsí breátha curtha i bhfearas sa Ghairdín Urnaithe. Níl díolta againn fós astu. Táimid ag tnúth go ndéanfaidh daoine ná fuair crann sa Ghairdín Chrann Clainne urraíocht ar cheann de na bínsí seo. Cosnaíonn siad €250 an ceann agus tá slí do bheirt nó triúr ar gach ceann. Leag stoirm seanchrann úll. Sciob nó d’alp éin a lán de sna húlla a bhí air sin. Ach d’éirigh le cuid dár gcuairteoírí roinnt mhaith a bhreith leo agus bhí píóga d’úlla an Daingin ar a lán bord ar feadh seachtaine. Níl aon bhlas ar úlla ón gcoichrích i gcomparáid lenár gcuid féin. Táim féin ancheanúil ar an úll beag milis dearg atá ar fáil i gcuid dár siopaí. Mairim ar thorthaí úra geall leis. Bhíomar gnóthach le leabhair. Sheolamar leabhar eile ón mBlascaod, ‘An Blascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile’ sa Mhúsaeum tar éis Aifrinn. Táim féin an-theanntaithe anois, ní féidir liom tiomáint agus bím ag brath ar mo chairde agus mo chomharsain. Is é an t-údar a thug leabhair siar don ócáid. Mholas dó céad cóip a bhreith leis. ‘Is leor trí bhosca’ ar sé. Ach níor leor go deimhin. Chuaigh an cogar timpeall sara raibh an seoladh féin déanta ná beadh ach an beagán leabhar ar fáil. Agus ní raibh; bhí sciobadh ar an leabhar; dá mbeadh an céad ann bheidís díolta. Bhíos ag iarraidh smacht a choimeád ar an slua. Ach tá fuíollach fós againn sa Díseart. Sea, ceannaíonn Duibhnigh leabhartha. Léid iad. Scríobhann siad iad. Is deas leis go mbíonn salachar eigin dár gcanúint féin sa chuid is fearr acu. Beidh leabhar nua le Bríd Ní Móráin, Saothrú an Ghairdín, á sheoladh ag an bhFéile Bheag (Mhór) ag Helen Ní Shé 36 West Kerry Live

20.15pm 6 Samhain. Beidh Aifreann sa sáipéal nua i Reilig Chnoc an Chairn ar 3.30pm ar Lá na Marbh. Tá coiste dícheallach ag plé leis an reilig seo agus is álainn an t-ómós do na mairbh a thaispeánann muintir Chorca Dhuibhne tríd an reilig seo a dheisiú agus a ghlanadh agus an sáipéal slachtmhar seo a sholáthar. Beannófar an sáipéal agus cuirfear Aifreann le hanamnacha na marbh go léir atá curtha sa reilig . Beidh sólaistí ar fáil sa Díseart le fáilte roimh chách, agus roimh bhaill an choiste go speisialta, ina dhiaidh sin. News from the Díseart We had a big influx of visitors for the holiday week, more French than usual. Our Prayer Garden lost an apple tree but its fall did very little damage to young trees near it. We installed 3 benches as Mary Reynold’s design required. Perhaps some shop or business might like to sponsor one of these at €250. We are busy with books these times. We launched a new book on the Blaskets two weeks ago and there was a stampede for copies at the launch. During the popular Féile Bheag Filíochta in the Musaeum in Ballyferriter at 20.15pm 6November Helen Ní Shé of RG will launch Saothrú an Ghairdín. Fáilte roimh chách.

DINGLE HORSE FAIR The 1st of October is the traditional Horse Fair Day in Dingle and, while it’s difficult to imagine it now, this fair once boasted upwards of 500 horses on sale and on show. Try to picture the scene in John Street, where the fair was and still is held, with 2000 clattering hooves; the horses, foals and ponies neighing and snorting; the hustle and bustle of owners, buyers and sellers; the stalls, the feedstuffs, the hawkers, the bantering, bartering, bargaining and arguing; the eating and drinking; the sights, sounds and smells of an exciting day. Many Dingle people remember it. That was almost 50 years ago according to Jim Rohan of John Street and most of the bargaining went on outside Jim’s door. The first horse fair was held in Dingle in 1937, according to Jim, with horses and owners coming from as far away as Donegal. Some owners brought as many as four or five horses and all the animals were stabled in John Street where they were tried and tested. A special Horse Fair Committee was appointed each year but the man who was mainly responsible for organising the event was John Malone who used to live in the house now occupied by Doyle’s restaurant. In 1937 the average price of a horse was £100; the average price for a foal was £10 while the average pony made £40. In 1985 only 12 animals were on sale and the average prices for these were; horse £600, foal £100 and pony £200. The advent of motor cars and tractors caused the decline in demand for horses and the term ‘horse-power’ came to have a whole new meaning for rural communities.

100g Blue Cheese

Roast Pumpkin and Blue Cheese & Sage Soup Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School Today there are very few vegetables that really remind us of seasonality, one such vegetable is pumpkin. Immediately we think of Halloween. Yet we rarely think of the pumpkin as something that we can eat or something that will go so well with other foods, such as; smoked bacon, blue cheese, apples, pork and garlic. There are so many varieties of pumpkin or winter squashes, all with different tastes and textures. If you are planning to carve a pumpkin this Halloween why not turn it in to a tasty meal too, remember the seeds are full of nutrition, you can toast them and then use them with your breakfast or simply as a snack.

Couple of sage leaves finely chopped 20g butter Salt and Pepper Method Preheat an oven to 180ºC. In a tray place the onion, garlic, celery and carrots and the pumpkin on a tray. Drizzle some oil over it and place some salt and pepper. Put this in the oven and allow this to roast for about 30 minutes. Once this has roasted and has browned take it out. All of the vegetables will have a devel-

oped a sweeter taste. At this stage remove the vegetables and add them to a pot, add the stock. Bring this to the simmer. After about 10 minutes add the coconut milk. Use a blender to bring the soup to a puree. Season well with salt and pepper. In a separate pan melt some butter once the butter has browned a little add the sage leaves. Allow them to cook for about 2 minutes. Remove and place on some kitchen paper. When serving crumble some blue cheese over it and then add the sage to the soup. Enjoy!!!

Serves 4 Ingredients 1 Red Onion sliced 2 cloves of garlic chopped finely 1 Stick of celery finely sliced 2 Carrots cut into chunks 1 Large Pumpkin with all the flesh removes and cut up into chunks 600ml stock 1 tin coconut milk Rapeseed Oil

An Fhéile Bheag Filíóchta 2015 Tionólfar an 9ú Féile Bheag Filíochta ar an mBuailtín ar Aoine 6ú Samhain agus rithfidh sí feadh an deireadh seachtaine. Is deacair a chreidiúint go bhfuil an fhéile seo ag rith chomh fada san agus nil si chomh beag mar fhéile a thuilleadh ach oiread, ach ag fás léi ó bhliain go bliain, le daoine ag teacht ó chian is ó chóngar. 'Sé is mó is cuis leis an bhfás leanúnach seo, is dócha, ná an t-atmaisféar cáirdiúil neamhfhoirméalta a bhaineann leis an réimse leathan imeachtaí i gcónaí, idir léamhanna, ceardlainn, scannáin, ceol, siúlóidí agus craic. Ar nóta níos dáiríre, 'sí an Fhéile Bheag ar cheann den mbeagáin imeachtaí filíochta is mó a dhéanainn iarracht dáiríre fós ceangal a chothú is a bhuanú idir fhilí Bhéarla agus filí Ghaolainne na hÉireann. The 9th Féile Bheag Filíóchta ['Little Poetry Festival'] will take place in Ballyferriter next weekend from the 6th to the 8th November. It is hard to believe the festival has been running so long and is no longer that little either, but has grown year on year, drawing people from far and near. The reason for this steady growth is probably, more than anything, the friendly informal atmosphere which pervades the wide range of events: readings, workshops, films, music, walks and craic. On a more serious note, the Féile Bheag is possibly the foremost among a small number of events which seriously seeks to preserve and strengthen connections between the Irish-language and Englishlanguage poetic traditions of Ireland.

Scéalta mistéireacha folaithe iontu go léir. Is fada ó thuaidh atá an baile sin Lerwick. Tá sé ar aon líne domhanleithead le Bergen, baile beag gleoite ar chósta thiar na hIoruaidhe. Ab aon iontas gur thug na Lochlannaigh sciúirdeanna agus ruathair fúthú mar a dheineadar fúinn féin agus d’fhág a rian ar ainmneacha bailte is uile. Ní mór de mharc atá fágtha acu ar ainmneacha áite anseo in Éirinn ach amháin ar ndóigh ar an dá chuan breátha san, Smerwick i gCiarraí thiar agus Helvick i bPort Láirge. Tá Oileáin Albanacha eile leithéidí Sgiathanach agus Leodhais breac le hainmneacha Lochlannacha mar go rabhadar san faoi cheannas na Lochannach i bhfad níos sia siar ná mar a bhíomarna in Éirinn gan dabht.| Scéal eile ar fad é an rian atá á fhágaint ag tionscal ola na Mara Thuaidh ar oileáin thoir thuaidh na hAlban, Séaltainn agus Orc, sa lá atá inniu ann. Cinnte go bhfuil airgead caite ar bhóithre agus ar ghlanachar na háite. Néatacht agus ord Preisbitéarach ó thalamh,le tabhairt fé ndeara ins gach aon áit, bail orthu. Ach is geall le Klondike cuid mhaith desna bailte, fir mhóra fíochmhara ag tuilleamh a mbeatha le hallas a ndroma. Pinginí móra á saothrú acu. Bheadh sé ag teastáil, agus an saol mínádúrtha a chaitheann siad a chur isteach ar mhaithe leis. Ag cur fúthu in óstáin ar longa seoil cóirithe go speisialta d’fhearaibh. Tréimhsí trí seachtainí ó dhubh dubh luite amach orthu fhéin. Na haon fhear ina bheirt. Aistear cúig huaire a chloig ó dheas ar bhád farantóireachta atá Inse Orc. Is amhlaidh mar scéal acusan é. Raidhse d’iontaisí neoiliteacha le maíomh acu, Knap Hower, carn Burnt Mound, Toffs Ness, Broch Gurness, Midhowe, Burroughston, agus Skara Brae. Nuair a chloisimidne Éireannaigh an ainm Skara Brae cuimhníonn cuid mhaith againn ar ghrúpa ceolmhar de bhunadh Conallach a bhí i mbéal an phobail roinnt blianta ó shoin. Binn a bhíodar, bail orthu. Ní foláir nó bhí cur amach acu ar an láthair iomráiteach ársa seandálaíochta Inse Orc, a rá go roghnaíodar an ainm sin. Is í an láthair ársa Skara Brae in Inse Orc an chloch is mó ar phaidrín seandálaíocht na dúthaí sin. Tá siad ana-mhórtasach as, agus a chúis acu. Tugtar togha na haire do agus tuigtear go dtabharfaidh an creimeadh cósta buille marfach do lá níos faide anonn. Tá a dhóthain díobhála déanta ag an gcreimeadh céanna dó cheana féin, mar nach bhfuil fághta anois ach a leath. Meastar daoine a bheith ina gcónaí i Skara Brae trí mhíle bliain roimh Chríost. Is mór an t-iontas go deo é. Ní féidir le saineolaithe seandálaíochta ach buille fé thuairim a thabhairt maidir le cén sórt daoine a bhí sna háiteanna sin ach is tuairimíocht í atá bunaithe ar staidéar na mblian a bhíonn i gceist gan dabht. Daoine gustalacha, a thóg láthair bhreá dóibh féin is dá dteaghlach a bhí ann. Bhíodar cumasach tíosach. Ba mhór acu a gcompord. Maraon linn féin suas go dtí le fíordhéanaí, b’é an drisiúr, an dresser deaghléasta an chéad rud a chífeá nuair a raghfá isteach i dtigh. Tá sé ansúd go gleoite in áitreabh Skara Brae agus féiríní is uirlisí a linne ar taispeáint go mórtasach do mhuintir an tí agus do chuairteoirí araon. Bhí seomraí fé thalamh acu mar áit stórais agus áit folaithe b’fhéidir, srutháin uisce ag sileadh chun glanachar a spreagadh agus fuílleach a smachtú. Na daoine seo bhíodar ar an gcéad dream a shocraigh síos in aon láthair amháin agus a chuir crích orthu fein. Bhí stoc acu agus bhíodar oilte mar fheirmeoirí agus mar iascairí. An aeráid i bhfad ní ba theo an uair sin de réir dealraimh, a bhuíochas do Shruth na Murascaille. An ní nách féidir le seandálaithe a dhéanamh amach, conas mar a tháinig deireadh lena leithéid. Conas nach bhfuil aon iarsma leanúnach díobh le feiscint aon áit eile. Mistéir rúndiamhrach a chuireann lenár bhfiosracht agus lenár n-iontas agus tamall a chaitheamh againn ar an láthair draíochta seo Skara Brae. Dúinne a bhí dall cuid mhaith ar imeachtaí an chogadh mhóir, agus an dara cogadh domhanda, cuireadh ar ár súile dhúinn anseo leis,a thabhachtaí agus a bhí na hoileáin seo Orc and Sealtainn mar láithreacha ‘straitéiseacha’ ag an Sasanach an t-am san. iompaithe bun os cionn ar muir le feiscint fós mar leac cuimhneacháin ar an ár agus ar an uafás. Sáipéilín tógtha i 1943 ag príosúnaigh Iodálacha a bhí gafa agus fé chuing in Inse Orc ina ábhar iontais inniu agus an uair sin leis gan dabht. Bhraitheadar uatha an baile, Iodáil na hailtireachta áille agus áit chun a gcreideamh a chleachtadh. Le cead ó lucht ceannais an champa ghéibhinn chuireadar chun oibre agus thóg séipéilín gleoite as stán, agus mionrab cogaidh a thug faoiseamh agus árdú croí dóibh agus iad gafa. Tá se ina sheasamh fós. Tugann iarphriosúnach fothuras thar nais chun snas beag agus miondeisiú a dhéanamh air. Is gleoite gléineach an tseoid í, más cogadh agus cruatan ba thús leis. Níl Inse Orc gan Ciarraíoch Mallaithe leis. Cloch chinn ar bharr faille in ómós don gCiarraíoch sin Kitchener a dhein a chuid chun fir óga a mhealladh isteach in arm Shasana tráth. Nach ait an mac an saol. An sean agus an nua láimh ar láimh in Insí gléineacha Shealtainn agus Orc, gan aon agó. Ach féach, ní gá dul chomh fada san ó bhaile an chéad uair eile, chun iontaisí seandálaiochta is eile a fheiscint. Nár aimsíodh láthair bhreá neoiliteach i gCiarraí lár, láimh le Baile an Mhuillinn an samhradh seo, láthair atá sé mhíle bliain d’aois meastar. Tá sé le baint amach! We will be putting baskets together again to raffle off. Please bring any item and /or non-perishable item into the office where either myself or one of the other ladies who works there will gladly take your donation. Castlegregory Celtic Senior result: Killarney Athletic B 1-1 Castlegregory Celtic FC. The pivotal moment of the game came on 70 minutes when Castle’s man of the match Declan Owens brilliantly saved a penalty that prevented the home side going 2 goals ahead. In the early exchanges Killarney dominated much of the possession as Castlegregory set out to sit deep and soak up pressure and strike on the counter. This tactic worked well for most of the first half and Castle created a number of good chances on the break. However, it was the home side that took advantage of the slippery conditions when they robbed the ball

midfield and quickly pressed forward to score with a cross shot to leave the half time score at 1-0 to the home side. In the second half Castle pushed 2 up front and chose to press higher up the pitch and this tactic worked very well with several good chances created in the early stages as Killarney came to grips with the extra pressure higher up the pitch. Then a very unfortunate injury to Christy Smith meant he had to go off with a dislocated shoulder meaning Castle had to reshuffle and soon after Killarney broke on the counter and won a penalty. However, the spot kick was expertly saved and this gave new belief to the Castle lads who pressed hard for the leveller which eventually came very late in the game after some great individual work by Enda Whelan wide on the right. Having won the ball back Enda crossed to Mícheál O Dowd who finished superbly to tie the game and give us our first point of the season. Overall, with a very depleted side once again this was a great away performance by all. Team: Declan Owens; Damien McMahon; Enda Whelan; Christy Smith; Dominic Spillane; Jason Griffin; Damien Finn; Maurice Slattery; Shane Kenny; Brandon Hoare; Mícheál O Dowd & Tomas Butler (on for Christy Smith). U17 fixture: Castle’s U17s will be at home this Saturday at 2:30pm V The Park. Castle are currently top of the division and Park are in 2nd so this should be a great match.

Ba uafásach mar a fuair Bridie uí Chíobháin ós na Gorta Dubha bás ar an Satharn seo caite. Bean ghealgháirach, shuáilceach go mbiodh aoibh an gháire coitianta ar a ceannaithe. 2015

‘Peaidí ’n Dúna’ comóradh ar shaol agus shaothar Phádraig Ua Maoileoin eagarthóir Mícheál de Mórdha foilsithe ag Coiscéim Tá Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid 19, Ceiliúradh na bliana 2014, díreach foilsithe. ‘Comóradh ar shaol agus ar shaothar an mhór-údair, agus an scoláire Gaeltachta agus Gaelainne, an Dr. Pádraig Ua Maoileoin, b’shin é an téama ag Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid 2014, a tionóladh in Ionad an Bhlascaoid. Ní haon áibhéil a rá agus a scríobh go bhfuil sé go hard ar liosta na bpríomhscríbhneoirí ab fhearr a bhí ariamh i gCorca Dhuibhne agus é áirithe chomh maith ar dhuine de phríomhscríbhneoirí na Gaeilge. Saolaíodh i gCom Dhíneol i nDún Chaoin é i 1913 agus ba é Tomás Ó Criomhthain, An tOileánach, a sheanathair. ‘Ar Cheann an Dúna i nDún Chaoin agus faoi scáth na mBlascaed a rugadh mé. Bí feirm mhaith ag m’athair ann, suas le sé fichid acra de thalamh maith mín, talamh ab fhearr chun caorach ná chun aon ní eile. Faoi bhun cailín ná raibh riamh i gceart agus a fuair bás is í an-óg, mise an té ba shine ar an gclainn. Bean ón mBlascaed, Cáit Criomhthain, a phós sé, agus níl aon bhliain ná go mbaineadh sé leanbh aisti. Nó, sa deireadh, gur fháisc an saol agus an bhreoiteacht an t-anam aisti, agus go bhfuair sí bás ar an ochtú ceann...’ - Pádraig Ua Maoileoin, Iomairí Críche, 1991.’

regarding progression from previous studies. However, there are exceptions. If you intend to start a course at16:57 a level you Question Project4:Layout 1 21/08/2014 Page 1 have studied before, you should check out whether the I’m unemployed and thinking about going to rules on progression apply to your situation. college. What funding is available for this? Answer Most undergraduate students attending publicly funded third-level courses for the first time will qualify for the Free Fees Initiative. You must meet criteria as regards residence, nationality and immigration status, as well as course requirements. If you qualify for free fees you do not have to pay tuition fees. There is a separate Student Contribution, which you pay to the college.

If you do not qualify for the Free Fees Initiative or the student grant you should find out whether Springboard can help you to return to education. Springboard provides free higher education courses for people who are unemployed.

If you have to pay tuition fees and a Student Contribution, you may qualify for tax relief. You can find out more about sources of funding, including the Student Assistance Fund for students experiencing financial hardship, on studentfinance.ie.

The student grant is the main financial support for students. The grant can cover all or part of your fees (if they are not already covered), the Student Contribution and provide some maintenance. To qualify for a grant, you and your course must meet certain criteria and you must pass a means test. The Back to Education Allowance is available to people who have been getting certain social welfare payments for a set period of time before starting their course. You cannot get a Back to Education Allowance and the maintenance portion of a student grant at the same time. If you are eligible for both, you should find out which would be of more benefit to you.

Dingle outreach: 3rd Tuesday of every month in the old C.B.S Monastry Building , John Street
