Discoveries at Lissaniska Ringfort

Dingle Food Festival 2018

21 August, 8pm - 9:30pm

Friday 5th - Sunday 7th October

Nagle Rice Community Centre, Milltown An illustrated talk, as part of Heritage Week, by archaeologist Ed Lyne about his exciting discoveries at Lissaniska ringfort, partially excavated on the route of the N70 Kilderry Bends road project. The excavations revealed that this 1,250 year-old ringfort was enclosed by three concentric, water-filled ditches and uncovered rare evidence of early medieval flax cultivation and woodworking, including wooden vessels preserved in the water-logged conditions.

Call For Volunteers It's time to get excited. It's nearly here. The festival only keeps going with the fabulous support of the volunteers who run it. Volunteers needed for the festival from now until the festival starts and over the weekend of the festival. Whatever time you can give is priceless to us. Whether it be 2 hours, an hour, a few hours, whatever. It could be giving out forms, collecting money, helping with markets, putting up barriers, manning the office on the weekend, helping with kids' activities etc. You don't have to be able to come to meetings. Please ring Kathleen Sheehy on 0879980554 Meetings starting Monday 13th August at 9am at Random Restaurant on Dykegate Lane. Meetings last no longer than 1 hour.

Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 21st August will be the First World War drama "Journey's End". Set in a dugout in Aisne

in 1918, it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, as they await their fate with the days ticking by, the tension rising and the attack drawing ever closer. Adapted from R.C. Sherriff's 90-year-old play the film has a thrilling power, thanks to director Saul Dibb's hard-hitting urgency and brilliant work from a talented cast. The following week on Tuesday 28th August the feature will be the French drama "Jeune Femme". The film tells the story of the neurotic , manic, bold and magnetic, Paula. Fresh from an unceremonious dumping by her boyfriend of 10 years, she finds herself wandering the streets of Paris- jobless, homeless and single- with no idea of what life holds for her next. At 31 years old, with little to show for it but a kidnapped cat and a sense of adventure, she sets out to reinvent herself new job, new friends, new life and finds that these things never do come easily.

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams REGATTA. One of the traditional annual events here in the Peninsula to withstand the test of time is the Dingle Regatta which takes place this weekend August 18th and 19th.Saturdays programme which starts at 2p.m. has 7 races on the card mainly for under age rowers and always provides plenty of excitement and keen competition as well. The adults take to the water on Sunday at the same time with competitions for both ladies and mens teams followed by mixed races and a chance also for novices to try their skills at handling a naomhog in Dingle Harbour. The huge turnout at training sessions has been very encouraging this year and hopefully will ensure the traditional skills of naomhog racing will survive and grow well into the future. And of course the competitors and organisers would much appreciate the support of the general public so dont forget to come along and show your appreciation over the weekend after all it is a healthy place to spend an afternoon and a free show thrown in as well. RACES. Another very successful 3 day Race Meeting was held in the famous Ballintaggart Track last weekend despite the inclement weather conditions on the Saturday. The huge numbers who follow Pony Racing to Dingle each year have made it the most popular Horse and Pony Racing meeting in the country. Great credit is due to the local voluntary crew who put so much time and effort into organising the meeting and ensuring every last minute detail is taken care of and all goes off without a hitch on the day. What I have been particularly pleased is the way races are now run off at the designated time on the card which is down to the organisational skills build up over many years. Well done everybody and I heard Thomas Callaghans rendition of Dingle Bay after Mass on Sunday was once again a special treat for all present. APPOINTMENT. Congratulations to Marian O'Flaherty on her recent appointment to the Nuacht RTE and TG4 Southern Region team operating from Cork. Marian has been very helpful in promoting happenings in the 6 West Kerry Live

Peninsula for many years and we hope her involvement with the popular Radio Kerry Caint CiarraĂ series will also continue. Good Luck with your new career move Marian. TIDY TOWNS. Unfortunately Dingle has been included in the Littered Category of the recent National Survey of Waterways, Harbours and Rivers. We can point the finger and blame all sorts of things for this situation but basically it is down to ourselves to start doing something to get us up into the acceptable category as soon as possible. We really do not need negative publicity being so reliant on tourism as the main income generator on the Peninsula. As we have been highlighting through this column over the past few years everybody can help by starting outside your own door and a few minutes every day can make a big difference in a short time. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. EVENTS. Dingle Marathon is taking place on Saturday September 1st , The following Weekend the Dingle Tradfest returns from September 6th to 9th. The Tommy Griffin over 35 Football Tournament is also scheduled for Saturday September 8th and the Food Festival coming up very shortly afterwards. PEIL. The Kerry Minor Footballers are really giving us some heart attack moments but sincere good wishes to the team and mentors in the All Ireland Final coming up shortly. Dingle and West Kerry are well represented on the panel and sideline also. Can I say a big thank you to Eamon Fitzmaurice for his efforts with the Kerry Senior Team over the past 6 years. Many other counties supporters would be very happy to have won a National League and All Ireland Senior Title in that short timespan and stopping an all conquering Dublin team in their tracks as well. Most club coaches at underage level in Kerry are encouraging the pure football skills and abilities of their teams and I for one hope this continues as was witnessed in the Minor game last weekend. The problem teams at Senior level have encountered over the past 8/10 years is other counties adopting negative defensive tactics to counter the natural footballers of teams like Kerry. Lets see some PURE FOOTBALL again for the good of our beautiful national sport.

Farming News NEW KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER SCHEME FOR FOREST OWNERS Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Andrew Doyle T.D., today announced a new scheme to establish Knowledge Transfer Groups (KTGs) for forestry. The scheme comes on foot of a successful pilot scheme run last year for these groups. Knowledge transfer groups are well established in other sectors and I am very pleased to be announcing them for the forestry sector now. They’re a proven method of sharing best practice amongst participants in a sector and empowering them to maximise the value of their holding. They have a clearly defined role for the forestry sector now and by filling this knowledge gap a potential barrier to the mobilisation of timber and biomass can be removed. These KTGS are aimed at private forest owners that require additional knowledge to help them undertake appropriate management activities in their forests. Discussions will be facilitated by a professional forester and will incorporate both classroom style learning as well as practical elements. KTGs will also encourage these forest owners engage with forestry groups and forestry professionals. KTGs will provide the mechanism for gaining this expertise and empower them to manage their own forests over its rotation. Under the scheme Forestry groups, forestry companies and forestry consultants can apply to organise KTGs. According to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marines recent publication “Forest Statistics – Ireland 2017”, nearly 21,994 unique private forest owners have received grant aid to establish forests since 1980. The average size of these forests is just 8.8 hectares. Working with these private forest owners to allow them to maximise the value of their forest is a priority for my Department. Consolidation of a widely dispersed private forest estate into larger management units will be part of this strategy. This also helps to maximise the value for the sector as a whole and increase downstream benefits and boost the rural economy. Cooperation with other forest owners will be key to this and I look forward to seeing these groups develop over time. Each KTG can have a maximum of 20 participants and each participant will need to attend 7 meetings or outdoor events in order to complete the programme KTG payments are broken down as follows: Payee

Reimbursement/ grant payment per

KTG Participant

Meeting attended

€70 per meeting

A total of 7 meetings and events will be organised per KTG - the maximum payment to each participant is €490. KTG evaluation:- An evaluation process will apply to ensure that only applications that reach a minimum standard are considered. Applications will also be ranked in the event that the scheme is over subscribed Each KTG application received will be rated according to the following criteria; How client base/membership/future participants would benefit from membership of your KTG(s); Capacity/experience of each KTG organiser to run the KTG programme; Extent of previous knowledge transfer activities (list field trips, seminars, publications etc.). Promotion strategy to attract inactive forest owners to the KTG. All applicants will be ranked according to the marks awarded. Available KTGs will be distributed 50:50 between forestry producer groups and forestry companies/forestry consultants. The KTG Pilot Scheme:- In order to test the KTG learning format the Department decided to run a KTG pilot project in 2017 for private forest owners modelled on the Department's existing KTG programme. The pilot involved 269 participants over 14 individual KTGs. to all sheep have been announced. Since it’s announcement in May, the Department of Agriculture have engaged constructively with stakeholders in relation to the practical concerns raised in relation to the introduction of the new system. In some cases thay have rubbed noses the wrong way, but human nature being what it is, this is always bound to happen. Their priority is to get this thing to work, and work for everyone. Compromise is essential here. Having carefully considered the issues raised they now seem ready to respond positively to these many concerns, whilst still trying to delivering the benefits of extending electronic identification to the industry as a whole. The Minister said that the new requirements will now be introduced in two stages as follows: With effect from 01 October 2018, all National Sheep Identification System (NSIS) approved tag suppliers will only sell two tag types: a) single electronic slaughter tags (for animals less than 12 months for lambs moving directly from the farm of birth to slaughter), and b) electronic tag sets (for all other sheep movements). With effect from 01 June 2019 all sheep moving off a holding must be identified electronically, requiring either a) a single electronic slaughter tag, where lambs less than 12 months of age are moved directly from the birth holding to a slaughter plant, or b) an electronic tag set, in the case of all other sheep movements. The Minister also announced that having listened to the concerns regarding costs associated with the transition from one system to the other, he has now decided, subject to the normal budgetary and State Aid approval procedures, on revised financial supports to assist in this transition process. There will be a once-off payment of up to a maximum of €100 per farmer, which will be related to the purchase of electronic tags from 1 October 2018. This is double the previous proposed figure of €50 payment. In the context of simplification, sheep farmers will not need to make an application for this funding, as the Department is in a position to use its records to calculate the amount due to each farmer under the scheme. The Minister went on to say that ‘One of the main concerns was the need for an appropriate transition period for farmers to use up already purchased stocks of tags, to simplify arrangements for store lamb fatteners who would have purchased lambs already tagged with the ‘old’ tags, and to enable marts and factories put in place the necessary infrastructure and systems – the staged implementation of the new requirements takes account of the varying concerns’. The staged implementation will, in particular, allow all 2018 season lambs to exit the system prior to 1 June 2019 without having to be identified electronically and provides farmers with an extended opportunity to use up existing stocks of conventional tags prior to that date. The Minister recalled that current national sheep identification system is widely acknowledged to be very complex, with an over reliance on the manual transcription of individual sheep identification numbers. He stated that “the extension of electronic identification will simplify the sheep tagging system, significantly reduce the record keeping requirements for sheep farmers moving sheep to livestock marts, slaughter plants and export assembly centres and provide a more accurate and robust sheep traceability system in support of animal health and public health objectives and thus support the further development and sustainability of the sheep industry. This move to full EID will protect Ireland’s reputation as a source of safe and secure food and animals and will put Ireland’s sheep traceability system on a par with other major competitor exporting countries in maintaining and securing new international markets for Irish sheep meat. The effectiveness of EID is enhanced by the participation of marts and slaughter plants in electronically capturing the identification number of sheep and providing a printout to the farmer for association with the dispatch docket. This facility enables farmers to record only the total number of sheep consigned on the dispatch docket rather than the 15 digit individual tag numbers – this saves time and improves accuracy. Additionally the Minister also announced a subvention to marts of 40% of the verified development cost (subject to a maximum of €10,000) of

the infrastructure necessary to enable them generate the printout of tag numbers for farmers in respect of sheep supplied. He also re-confirmed that electronic tag readers and associated software are included as eligible investments in the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) scheme to assist sheep farmers in flock management. He stressed however, that tag readers are not a requirement for the new sheep identification system.

Michael Greaney Ltd

Agri Contractor Ballyguin, Brandon, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Up to now, all sheep are required to be identified electronically with a full EID tag set. However, an exception is made for lambs slaughtered before reaching the age of 12 months (regardless of the number of movements or interim destinations within the 12 months period), where such lambs may be identified with a single conventional tag. All animals have to be identified by 9 months of age. Under the new arrangements all animals are still required to be identified at 9 months of age. With effect from 1 June 2019 all sheep sold after that date and consigned directly from farm of birth to a slaughter plant before 12 months of age can be identified with one electronic tag in the animal’s right ear, whilst after that date all animals, including lambs to be sold through marts or farm to farm etc. must comply with the full EID requirements – (1 conventional tag in the left ear and 1 electronic tag in the right ear). A bolus set comprising an electronic bolus in the stomach of the sheep and a corresponding conventional tag bearing the same number as the bolus may be used as an alternative to an EID tag set. The staged implementation dates provide farmers also with an extended opportunity to use up existing stocks of conventional tags on lambs that will be slaughtered prior to 01 June 2019. The maximum amount payable to each keeper in the announced onceoff EID tag subsidy scheme is €100. The subsidy will apply to the first order for EID tags ordered by farmers after 01 October 2018. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Pork Wellington with Mushrooms, Mash Potato and Broccoli &Parsley Butter Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

large bunch of parsley, chopped

Sometimes a pork fillet can be bland and dry, so if you take the pork fillet and do a little work with it you can turn it in to something really nice. In this recipe, I have wrapped it in mushrooms and pastry just as you would with a beef wellington. I have added a little spinach too to give it a little colour. A large pork fillet with the addition of the pastry, mushrooms, spinach and served with mash and broccoli should feed three people. If you are not a fan of mushrooms or want to try something else you can roast some aubergine and garlic and then puree them.

rapeseed oil

Ingredients 1pork fillet 200g mushrooms, finely chopped large bunch of spinach, washed 1 onion, cut into small dice some thyme leaves, finely chopped 1 roll of puff pastry 1 egg, for egg-wash 5-6 potatoes, peeled and cut into half 1 broccoli, cut into florets

1 knob of butter salt and pepper Method For the potatoes Put the potatoes in a pot, cover with cold water and add a pinch of salt. Let them cook for about 25 minutes or until you can easily pierce through them with a fork. Strain out the water and put the potatoes back in the pot and over the heat for two minutes and stir them. Take them off the heat and use a masher to mash them. Add some butter, salt and pepper. Keep this warm until needed. For the pork Preheat the oven to 180ยบC. Put a pan on to heat. Season the pork with salt and pepper. When the pan is hot add a little oil and put the pork on the pan. Turn it after 3 minutes and let it cook for another 2-3 minutes. Take it out of the pan and place it on a tray. Meanwhile put a pot over medium heat, add some oil then the chopped onion and thyme let this cook for about 3 minutes. Add a knob of butter and the mushrooms to the pan. Cook this for another 5 minutes. The mushrooms should

be soft at this stage. Add the spinach and cook it for about 3 minutes. Roll out the pastry, and brush well with the egg wash. Spread the onion and mushroom and spinach mixture along the pastry keeping a space around the edge. Place the pork in the centre and fold over the pastry. Use a fork to seal the edges. Place on a tray and put it in the oven. This will need about 25 minutes to cook. Using a thermometer, when it reaches 75ยบC it is done. Take the pork out of the oven and allow it to rest for about 5-10 minutes. For the broccoli (you can do this while the pork is resting) Put the broccoli into a pot of boiling water. Cook for 3 minutes or so. Strain the water. Add some butter, salt and pepper. For the sauce Melt some butter and add the chopped parsley. To serve Cut the pork into 3 pieces. Put some mash on a plate and add the broccoli. Put the pork over the broccoli and then pour over some butter. Enjoy!!!

When the Going gets Tough, it is Augustitis! Irene Ní Fhlannúra August is here, the tourist numbers are at their peak and for those working in the trade, you may be feeling a little worse for wear at this point of the season. You know you have reached that dangerous stage when you are asked where the post office is located and its enough to consider strangulation with the hand-woven scarf adorning the visitor’s neck! And breathe…. But of course, you politely give directions, comment on the weather and go on your merry way. Everyone has their own way to cope with the busy-ness of the Summer but for most, the only way is to suck it up and keep going. This method may not knock a feather out of the younger, care-free workers, but for those who are also trying to fit in family life, entertaining, budget for the quieter months and all the other aspects of modern life, “Augustitis” may end up costing you your health! It is not unusual for people who have worked through a long period of enormous pressure to crash as soon as their own holiday time comes around. The effects of prolonged stress require recuperation and the body will call it all to a halt to allow this to happen one way or another. How you fuel your body during times of high demands is critical to how well you cope with the pressure in the moment and the ability to enjoy the fruits of your labour when the time comes. B vitamins are number one on the list of support for both energy and recovery. This class of vitamins are water-soluble, meaning they are not stored in the body and can become depleted very quickly when life gets busy. A well-balanced natural diet of greens, lentils, plenty vegetables, wholegrains and some meat can keep us topped up for normal daily activities but in times of stress, when the demand for B-vitamins is higher we tend to eat less healthily and run into a deficit almost instantly. Vitamin C too, is also in high demand during stressful periods and is another vitamin not stored in the body, instead relying on a steady supply from our food – fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Low vitamin C is linked to poor immunity, sore mouth and gums and fatigue. While the stress response may keep us going during times of high intensity, once it has passed, the lack of vitamins Bs and C are evident when you crash and burn soon after. Supplement now with a combined B and C complex to give yourself a boost at this time. Magnesium is another great nutrient to throw into the mix as it is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body. Most notably, it is Nature’s Tranquilizer – helping us to feel physically relaxed. Stress can cause tension in muscles, blood vessels, airways and increase feelings of anxiety. Magnesium calm the nervous system, relaxes the body and facilitates recovery. Green leafy vegetables are the best sources of magnesium and consider a magnesium supplement to take at the end of the day. 20 West Kerry Live

Sugar, alcohol and stimulants are a sure way to tip you over to the dark side when the going gets tough yet are often the preferred choice to get us through pressure times. Not only do they diminish your vitamin C and B levels, they add to tension and ultimately leave you drained. Good quality proteins eaten with unprocessed carbs (wholegrains and vegetables) will give you sustained energy release, keeping you going at a steady pace. If your diet is good, full of natural foods and you want an extra boost you could try Ginseng root juice or powder. This is a stimulating tonic and can boost energy levels in the short-term. However, it is not recommended for those with high blood pressure, anxiety or nervous disorders. Seek advice on this one. Other great tonics from the East include Maca, Ashwagandha and Moringa – all available as supplements/powders but are best taken along side a good diet rather than trying to replace healthy eating. Virginia Woolf once said – “One cannot think well, love well or sleep well, if one has not dined well”. How true is that!

Which brings us nicely onto sleep! Your chance of recovering from the day to day stuff, even in high season, is largely dependent on getting a good night’s sleep! It can be difficult to unwind after a busy shift but make every effort to do so now or you will be forced through fatigue or illness later! Make your bedroom a haven of relaxation, clutter-free and smelling of lavender to catch those Zzzzs. Your downtime and sleep are as important as your working time and there is no real substitute in the long-term. Massage, aromatherapy, baths and meditation are great ways to relax and unwind after a busy day. There’s only a few more weeks to go before things ease off a bit. After taking great care of our visitors all season, don’t forget to take care of yourself and ease into the quieter months feeling good both in body and mind. Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

WEST KERRY

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes backEst. into2005 the unit, Professional Window where the gasResidential is compressed&toCommercial make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity Cleaning Service. to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

WINDOW CLEANING

Offering a Service from One Off Cleaning to a Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs Regular Cleaning Programme. on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of Fully Insured. 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

It was a big treat in those days even to get a spin on the bus to Tralee as there were only 4 or 5 cars in the town at the time. I went to St. Mary's Hospital in Eastbourne- a lovely seaside town. A man came to school in Dingle looking for girls to go nursing. We nursed casualties from the front line in Europe (WW2). There were broken legs and arms, amputations, mental breakdowns and shellshock. I once looked after an Irish man who'd had a heart attack on the Big Wheel- He got a surprise when I spoke in Irish to him - a lot of people left Ireland without a word of English. It was hard going, nursing in those days - the doctors thought they were God almighty. Some patients were difficult too - there was one young patient who really got on my nerves. He kept reading with the torch under the sheet after lights out. We argued a lot. - Reader, she married him - !! West Kerry Live 21

Annascaul Sang Its Heart Out Bert McCann Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald was known throughout the height of her fame as the First Lady of Song. She was apparently given to saying that, ‘The only thing better than singing is more singing’ By that measure the folk who took part in the recent ‘Annnascaul Celebrating Singing’ event finished the weekend in good shape. For there was singing, more singing and then there was even more singing. Once again the opening Friday night at Annascaul’s village hall set the tone. In preparation, members of the Annascaul Artists had dressed the auditorium to great effect and Catherine Pierce lent her work, with Diarmuid Lyng and Siobhán de Paor adding splendiferous lights, candles and ivy branches . The full house was treated to an equally affecting official opening performed by Eilís Ni Chinnéide regarded as one of the best singers of her generation in addition to being a vital exponent of West Kerry song. A showcase of performers who were to feature over the weekend of superlative singing and entertainment took over and delivered a galaxy of song. Later, in Teac Sean’s bar Annascaul Singing Club stalwart Tony Owens opened for Donegal musician Mario Manning, who presented a playlist of country, trad, bluegrass and blues, running well into the night. Saturday saw an innovative venture. Big Singing Day, a twelve-hour programme of songs and music stretching from noon to midnight was probably a bit of a gamble as it involved two workshops, four gigs including a two concerts and the participation of around thirty performers. However it was a grand exposition of many genres of music and song. Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh presented a terrific morning singing workshop in Scoil Bhreac Chluin and the day then progressed through Pat Johnson’s absorbing guitar workshop. An afternoon blockbuster by the Sacred Harp Singers of Cork, supplemented by the Sacred Harp Singers of Dublin was next up and it drew another packed house in the hall. Sacred Harp singing is sacred music with an edge and sung in double forte and four part harmony. The twelve singers produced a sound that not only involved the audience, but could be heard the length and breadth of the village. Then the evening roll-out began. To kick it off locally-based bluegrass outfit Fox Tales led a session in Hanafin’s Bar supported at times by the Sacred Harp singers Joan Greene’s Caifé Nua was the locus of the next phase. Many of the performers from the showcase concert on Friday night took to the stage there and enthralled the listeners. It is clear that in this part of the world there are many quality performers available. Following their appearances the previous night, Country artist Tricia Moriarty and then balladeer Nora Rice a member of the singing club who recorded her first CD this year both excelled; Cork harmony duo ‘Bells’, Shane McGrath of the Dublin bands ‘The Sick and Indigent Song Club’ and ‘Minnie and the Lily Whackers’ and surprise guest singer /songwriter par excellence Ger Wolfe laid out a vivid musical tapestry. Siobhán de Paor presented challenging spoken word compositions and Joan Greene energised the music and song lovers in extraordinary fashion. Following that cornucopia the last gig of the continuous twelve hours took place at the Randy Leprechaun. Kevin Guitar and Mattie Barker formerly of Strange Attractor brought the music of the Mississippi Delta to the Dingle Peninsula. A resounding blues performance sent the folk especially those who had made it through the entire Big Singing Day, into the night well-satisfied. So, Sunday was dubbed ‘Take It Handy Day’. As ever, it began with the Childrens’ Workshop in the hall. Ruti Lachs the leader is famed for her skill in providing musical experiences for children of all ages. Then back in Scoil Bhreac Chluin, Fintan Lucy, Cork-based singer/songwriter of great repute along with Fíona Nic Eochaidh hosted a gathering of aspiring lyricists. In the late afternoon folk started gathering around Hanafin’s and the Caifé Nua. The Tralee Ukelele Players and Singers and a member of the Dingeleles Band arrived and struck up in the Caifé. They were closely followed by the entrance of Kingdom Brass, a quintet of brass musicians based around Killorglan, Rathmore and Killarney. An impromptu performance happened on the street with both groups of musicians giving it a blast. Meanwhile Nelligan’s Traditional Group came in from Dingle and set up in Hanafin’s, striking up as fine a recital of traditional tunes as were heard all weekend. Heading into the final concert at Caifé Nua one wondered would the enthusiasm of the performers and the aficionados be sustained into the last gig? Would the festival go out with a whimper or a bang? Well, once 22 West Kerry Live

again every seat was taken. The evening which was entitled " I measc na m Ban - Amongst Women" featured talented Tipperary singer and songwriter Ríona Ó Madagáin now Dingle-based and fresh from supporting Mark Geary in Dublin the previous night opened and shone mightily. Tricia Moriarty and Nora Rice continued where they left off and brought the audience with them. Ronnie Moore and Joan Greene sparkled. Siobhán de Paor was at her poetic and oratorical best. Kaiona Solas who had also figured in the Friday opening concert arrived in from a journey from Wexford. She put in an eclectic half-hour enunciating Spanish, African lyrics and rhythms, on voice, guitar and the Kora aka the African Harp. She was joined by Siobhán de Paor with spoken word anthems. Then Eilís Ni Chinnéide returned to the gathering of singing and music enthusiasts for the finale and most touchingly sang it all back home. There was a feeling during Annascaul Celebration Singing 2018 that the annual event had acquired a sense of identity. The jamboree has expanded over the three years and arguably has grown into being a recognised part of the West Kerry musical landscape. Indeed following a tentative firstyear programme, a more confident second year endeavour and in this expanded third year it has found its feet. And it has perhaps also become a crossroads, a meeting point for the cream of the singers, songwriters and musicians based on the peninsula. This in turn attracts talent from other domains. For the second year running Kevin McElligot conducted the social media campaign and very effective it proved to be. Our local media pals West Kerry Live were the also instrumental in spreading the word, as was Radio Na Gaeltachta. That said it was all made supremely more vibrant by support of the people of the village and local businesses. Indeed, traders throughout Corca Dhuibhne also assisted the fund-raising efforts. The members of the audiences, some of whom were returning to Annascaul for the third year brought great, generous energy and a vote of confidence to the festival. This was demonstrated by their enthusiasm and the generous donations that were given which allowed for an expansion of the programme. Of course it was all made more possible with the financial assistance offered by Kerry County Council’s Arts Office and the council’s Community Department. Not forgetting of course Patcheen’s Bar and the Annascaul Singing Club where the seed was sown three years ago.

The Glan Initiative

Hello to all our friends in the Community, we hope you have enjoyed the exceptionally warm summer we have had to date. The last number of weeks have been busy here within the community as we have lots going on.

The summer is in full swing and we hope that everyone who has signed up to GLAN has had a great season so far. Just to keep you up to date on the new environmental initiative for the Dingle Peninsula - “GLAN”. The beginning aim of GLAN (Green Local Area Network) is to help businesses make small changes such as reducing the amount of single use plastics they use, along with supporting other environmental actions. Businesses need to agree to make a minimum of 3 pledges to be part of the Glan initiative.

As some of you may know, each Friday we have a stall at the local farmers market in Dingle town. This is a chance for our weavers who create some magnificent handmade items such as rugs, wall hangings, chair covers, oven gloves and lots more to showcase them and inform people of the hard work and dedication that it takes to be a skilled weaver. Tomas Ferriter has a new line of rugs out and any of you that know Tomas know that his standard of work is exceptional. Anne Marie Moriarty, Eoin O Cearna, Catriona O'Shea and Robbie O'Neill have all been progressing really well under the watchful eye of our workshop master Betsie Konik. Our weavery workshop is open daily for those who can’t wait until the market to purchase your own handcrafted piece made right here in Dingle by one of our community members. The farm has seen a new face join the team. Matt Boyle who comes two days a week on a voluntary basis has had a huge impact in the short time since he has arrived and is a great addition to the team. With the help of Darren O'Brien, Dominic Mc Kenna, Tomas Ferriter and Yago the farmers have given the farm a much needed makeover by painting all the buildings which now look top class! Well done to the farm team. This time of year, the garden is always a pleasure to work in as this is the time of year where we get harvest, store and enjoy the amazing produce that will help sustain us through the winter thanks to Serge, Thomas Ryan, Kathrin, Lisa, Luke, Luzia and Gwen, for all there hard work throughout the year. Finally, this weekend we have our annual bucket collection which we will use towards the purchase of the much needed wheelchair accessible bus for the community. We are now so close to reaching our target and with the continued support from the local community we are hopeful that something which once seemed so far out of reach is now within touching distance. The support we receive from the local community is not taken for granted and we are sincerely grateful for all your continued support. - Neal Moran, Robbie O Neill and Linda O Sullivan

100% of almost 90 businesses approached in Dingle town have agreed to make pledges. The most popular pledge is to end supplying plastic straws. 99% of the businesses using single use take away plastic containers have pledged to change to biodegradable / compostable alternatives as soon as they can.. which is excellent news. Uptake has been similar in Castlegregory, Clahane, Brandon and Annascual which is all very positive. Glan is spreading too which is great news – so far close to 100 businesses in Tralee have agreed to take on pledges as part of the Glan Tralee campaign. The interest in the #2minutestreetclean initiative has also been great and thank you to the businesses who are coming on board as Street Clean Ambassadors.

What’s happening in the Hub? We recently welcomed Prof Jerry Murphy from the Marine and Renewable Energy Institute (MaREI) who led a discussion on bioenergy with interested members of the local community. MaREI is the National Centre for marine and renewable energy research, development and innovation. It combines the expertise of a wide range of research groups and industry partners, with the shared mission of solving the main scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges across the marine and renewable energy sectors. There is a considerable challenge to reduce carbon by a factor of five in the coming years and anaerobic digesters have the potential to play a significant role in the reduction effort. Anaerobic Digesters (AD) take feedstock from sources such as slurry, food waste, fish farms, seaweed farms and waste water and can turn them into biomethane which is carbon negative. The biomethane can be used to produce heat and electricity or to fuel biogas vehicles. Up until now it has not been economically viable to build AD plants in Ireland but that landscape is rapidly changing. Significantly, we learned that Gas Networks Ireland have been working on the business case for biofuel for a number of years. To support this they negotiated an 8yr period of excise relief on biogas as a propellant and are building service stations as part of their Causeway project. They have also announced funding of €2Bn to support the creation of 350 farm digesters in Ireland. There will be an International Energy Agency Symposium and GNI workshop in UCC on Sept 6th to address this and a number of delegates from the Dingle Peninsula will attend. This event is open to the public so please register here if you would like to attend: http://www.marei.ie/seai-iea-bioenergy-symposium/

an exemplar of how research can be transferred into local communities and both research jobs and spin-off enterprise based on this work can be generated here. It is clear in the development of renewable energy projects that there needs to be community benefit and agreement. Denmark operate a very successful model whereby the community take a 40% stake in projects and we are currently researching this further along with a model for farmers to receive payments for reducing carbon footprint. It is important that we understand all views on this and build them into the model development stage. To facilitate this, we are planning to run a workshop as part of the Farmer’s Forum at this year’s Dingle Food Festival and will bring further details of this once they are finalised. Also, please contact us at info@dinglehub.com if you’d like to be included in the conversation sooner. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. We see a number of opportunities for the Dingle Peninsula here and need to capture the views of the entire community to develop projects that are of benefit to all. It may be a good idea to have a few small ADs on farms initially to showcase the technology to the community before driving a larger scale project. An AD offers the opportunity to farmers to be energy independent and has the added benefit of a future income stream also. An additional opportunity is to work with MaREI to create

Mental Health Charity Benefits from Dingle Adventure Race The mental health charity, GROW, was presented with almost €1,500 arising from the Dingle Adventure Race. The Dingle Adventure Race (DAR) is a one day multi-activity adventure race comprising three different courses - DAR Full, DAR Sport and DAR Mini. Activities include biking over the spectacular Conor Pass, climbing Mount Brandon, as well as running the coastal roads of Slea Head and the Dingle Peninsula. Competitors also kayaked in Dingle harbour, ran along Ventry beach and scaled the picturesque Mount Eagle. GROW is immensely grateful to Noel O’Leary for choosing GROW as a beneficiary of DAR for the third year. GROW is a national mental health charity, focused on providing peer-support for anyone struggling with their mental wellbeing. In all, some €1,465 was raised for GROW. This goes directly towards GROW’s free, weekly community group which takes place in Ré Nua, Dingle at 11am each Monday. “Those who attend GROW, both learn from and support each other and work towards an improved quality of living and increased sense of personal value. The DAR challenge resonates with GROW’s ethos as GROW members face a daily endurance test to get the best out of life despite challenges. “The Dingle Adventure Race is a test of endurance and character but also great fun. Over the respective DAR courses, you can hear great encouragement and laughter as groups and individuals test and push themselves,” emphasises GROW Area Coordinator Colette Flannery.

Clodagh Quane, Kerry & Cork Audiology Medical Services are delighted to announce the addition of Clodagh Quane to their team. Clodagh is a highly qualified and dedicated audiologist, whose lovely warm manner has made her a favourite with both adults and children in Cork and Kerry. She holds a Masters in Audiology and specialises in developing audiology competencies for both adults and children, especially in the area of correct hearing aid fitting. Aftercare is particularly important to Clodagh, who is skilled in helping patients manage tinntus, vertigo and balance disorders. She is particularly interested in helping people who are suffering from tinnitus find ways of managing the condition. Education is very close to Clodagh's heart, so much so that her dissertation examined the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing students attending University College Cork. By conducting this research, she was able to gain valuable insight into how a hearing loss and different hearing interventions can impact the lives of students in an Irish third level education setting. With the beautiful, fine glorious weather we have had this summer, people’s minds turn towards beaches, sea and swimming. Therefore, the theme of my sponsored cycle this year is “Beaches”, taking in some of the lovely, picturesque beaches in Kerry, Cork and Waterford. I hope to begin in West Kerry with Ventry Beach, Béal Bán Beach, Coumeenol, Slaudeen, on to Inch Beach, cycle over the county bounds to Cork visiting Inchadoney and Court McSherry before finishing at Tramore Beach in Waterford. All monies raised will go to “St. Mary of the Angels”, Beaufort, who this year are celebrating their 50th Anniversary and where major fundraising is underway to help improve facilities in what is one of Kerry’s largest residential centres. Special thanks for your financial help down through the years. Go méadaí Dia bhúr stór, Seán Ó Catháin

Hospice Skydive We Neasa Ní Mhathúna and Geraldine Ashe are taking to the sky on the 1st of September 2018 to jump out of an aeroplane at 10,000ft all in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. The Kerry Hospice Foundation is a voluntary organisation that provides funding and support for Palliative Care Services in Kerry. We are hoping to raise as much money as possible and also raise awareness of the fantastic work that the Palliative Care Team is doing on a daily basis to care for the terminally ill. Anyone who would like to donate to this worthy cause, sponsorship cards are available throughout West Kerry and we also have an online donation page @gofundme.com/skydive-forkerry-hospice. Buíochas ó chroí libh go léir!

The ''I.T. Band'' is not the problem Eddie O’Grady

Illiotibial Band (ITB)

Localised pain on outer knee

Regularly I come across people receiving seemingly endless treatment sessions for iliotibial band syndrome, with the main focus of the treatment being to try and loosen out the I.T. band. Below are a few things I believe you should consider when treating iliotibial band syndrome. A client is told they have certain weak muscle groups which are causing the problem and are given a load of exercises to correct these weaknesses. Sometimes they are told that they need orthotics. Sometimes these treatment protocols may be necessary, but more often this is

just an overuse injury that is being made way too complicated. Say you have been running for a year(or years) with no issues, why are all these ''weaknesses'' just all of a sudden causing you these problems? Most likely they are not the cause. Why do you suddenly need orthotics?Did you change your feet? It is more likely you are overdoing it a bit in your running. All the emphasis is often placed on the I.T. band and treatment of same. The I.T. band is a long tendon and is a fairly inflexible structure, so concentrating on loosening out that is not going to give much relief in itself. Now if you shift the focus to loosening out the tightened outer quad muscles which attach to the I.T. band by fascia (connective, supportive sheet of tissue, kind of like a very strong clingfilm) and as a result pull on the I.T. band, you will generally start to recover fairly quickly. There is nearly always a section of the outer quad about a quarter of the way up from the knee which will be tight and ropey in this injury. Also don't forget the Tensor fascia lata muscle. This is up near the hip. It is the muscle that attaches directly to the I.T. band. If this has tightened it also needs to be worked out and loosened also. The I.T band should not be totally ignored of course. Instrument assisted soft tissue release can be excellent in loosening it somewhat, as well as for loosening out tightened quad muscles and fascia.

ture. You want to compress the icepack into the side of the knee to flatten the inflamed bursa and reduce inflammation. A packet of peas or one of those gel packs will not be cold enough. Rest is needed. This is an overuse injury, remember, but the better and more effective the treatment, the faster the recovery. Above is not stuff you will find in a text book but comes from knowledge of anatomy and experience in successfully treating this condition hundreds of times over the years, often in about two treatment sessions. Injuries are often over-dramatized. Sometimes you just need a little rest, with the right physio treatment protocol to aid recovery.

Another problem with this condition is a lack of understanding as to what is causing the pain at the side of the knee. The tension and resulting friction on the I.T. band causes the bursa under it at the side of the knee to become inflamed. This is what causes the pain. Treatment options here include a combination of non steroidal Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) anti-inflammatories, compression with ice (very effective), maybe some electro-acupunc-

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor August Weekend The Bank holday weekend was one of the busiest ever in Camp and in the Dingle Peninsula for years ! The first ever wedding was hosted by Sandy Feet Pet Farm on Saturday and later Pakie Farrell and his new Bride Diane, who got married in Mexico in April celebrated with all the family and friends in The Junction Bar, entertainment extension at the rear of the bar. And on Sunday baby Eden Jane Fitzgerald Costello was christened at St. Mary Church, Camp followed by a family christening breakfast back at Fitzgerald's. After wedding parties continued at The Railway Tavern with a might traditional music session on Sunday with Milo, Gordon and all at their very best including Mike O Neill, himself with his tin whistle joining in from time to time. And Ashes had a waiting time of 30 minutes for meals, the best of Rorys cuisine ! Accommodation was at a premium around too from Tommys Glamping Accommodation at Ashes, perfect for families and convenient in the heart of the village to our B/B's who were frantically ringing around for beds at the eleventh hour, every corner available was filled and everybody was happy. A good complaint for sure ! And West Kerry Trekking with ponies and horses to suit all ages doing a great trade, meandering along on beaches and valleys ! There was scarcely a drop of milk or a loaf of bread left in O'Dwyers/Mace Supermarket on Monday and food and freshly prepared meals at the delicatessan counter had everybody work-

ing flat out throughout the entire weekend. And the service in every establishment in Camp was top class, one tourist remarked - You have a great little village, so everybody be proud, Camp can deliver under all kinds of pressure. Well done ! Camp Drama Camp Drama present ‘Old Boilers’ in Castlegregory for 1 night only Saturday August 18th in the Clubroom @ 8pm. Tickets for sale in Castlegregory Information Centre. A night of comedy not to be missed. Bingo – Fundraiser A Bingo night will be held in the Old School on Sunday, 19th August at. 7.30 p.m. Proceeds in aid of St. James Church, Dingle. Everybody welcome ! GAA What excitement on Sunday it was to have two Annascaul young men playing with Kerry in Croke Park in the All Ireland MFC Semi Final against Monaghan. Killian Falvey, Coum dubh and Colm Moriarty, Ballinane are following in the footsteps of greats like Paddy Kennedy, Tommy Doyle, John Doyle and others “quote from Radio Kerry” and well said ! Congratulations to all the team ! They'll have an audiene watching from all over the world and no more enthusiastic follower than former Annascaul Club footballer , Martin Falvey now heading up the Kerry Club in San Francisco who along with Brian Sheehy, Kevin O Shea all Camp/ Annascaul footballers and many more supporters who will proudly hoist the home flag in September and some will no doubt make it home to Croke Park to cheer them on ! Good luck to Kerry and hope they win the 5 in a row ! Success And in soccer, congratulations and good luck to Annascaul man Séan Kennedy, 16 years of age, who is off to play professional football with Sunderland AFC in the next week. Obituary John Patrick Kiely was remembered by his family and friends at a special Mass in St. Marys Church, Camp on Sunday. John Patrick passed away in London last September and even though he was born and raised in London, he spent all of his childhood and much of his adult holidays in Camp and in Gleann na nGealt, birthplace of his mother Eileen Murphy who emigrated like many of the youth of her time to London and met and married Tipperary man Joh Kiely in London John was the eldest of the Kiely family of 5 children. Sympathy is extended to all the Kiely family and cousins and extended family and friends in Kerry and in London. Rest In Peace ! Happy Birthday Happy birthday to Amelia Day, Kilteenbane, Camp. Amelia headed off to Dingle for the day to celebrate with friends ! May Amelia enjoy many more birthdays !

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Is baolach ná raibh aon dath agam san eagrán deireannach. Chuaidh cúrsaí amú. Bhíos ag taisteal, geábhadh go Meiriceá. Bead ag cur sios ar chuid dá bhfeaca ar ball. Caid

tacht - seo cleachtas a bhí ann blianta fada ó shoin agus bhí an- thoradh air. Is páiste amháin a bheadh ag cur fé/fuithi i dteaglach Gaelach. Fáiltím roimh an dá mbeartas san. ‘Tá duine éigin ag éisteacht linn’, arsa Padraig mac Fhearghusa, fear saothrú iomairí na Gaolainne do chách. CNN An mbíoinn tú ag féachaint/éisteacht le nuacht CNN? Go sábhála Dia sin ar an easpa cothromaíochta atá ann. Mheasfá ná raibh aon tsuim acu i síocháin na Cruinne. Is peaca mór teangbháil a bheith le aon tír eile ná fuil féna scáth nó ar aon fhocal leo. Deirimse maistíneacht leat.

Chuaidh cúrsaí sa bhfraoch ar Chiarraí i mbliana. Bhí an freagra ag ‘Seán na Pípe’ nuair a fhiosraigh stróinséir conas ná raibh sé ag rince. ‘Níl an gréas agam’, arsa Seán, mar is buataisí a bhí air. Is mar siin a bí ag Bainisteoir Chiarraí ní raibh an gréaas/abhar aige. Dá mbead bheadh an lá leis. Cuimhniigh go bhfuil imreóirí mar ‘Gooch’ scortha. Is cuma cé hé mura bhfuil an t-abhar aige ní féidir an lá a bhreith leis. Ach tréis tamaill raghaidh na himreóirí óga i bhfeabhas agus i dtaithí, ní do gheit. Gúimíd gach rath ar Éamon ina phost mar phríomh oide sa Phobalscoil.

PS Níl spás do cheisteanna an babhta seo.

Seans go dtiocfadh sé ar ais arís mar a dhein Micko agus Jeaic.

An Chomhairle Contae

Faid is ná raibh an rath orainn bhí Muineacháin bocht ar a dtriail le Tír Eoghain. Tá sé deacair buachaint ar na buachailí seo. Bhí Bleá Cliath ar a socaracht i aghaidh na Gaillimhe.

Tá an Comhairle Contae bruidiúil ag glanadh dígeacha agus ag líonadh na sclaigeanna/‘potholes’ agus ag oscailt draéineanna ar fuaid an cheantair. Is mó duine sásta lena a bhfuil déanta agus á dhéanamh ag an gComhairle.

Go macánta ní raibh aon choit ar aon cheann don dá chluiche. Beidh sé saoráideach ag Bleá Cliath sa Chraobh Chluiche ach fiú is go bhfuil Tír Eoghain gan a bheith a leath chomh maith is a bhíodh n’fheadaraís cad an fhoirmle a bheadh acu. Caithfidh a bhfoirmle a bheith go diail ar fad agus tá súil agam go mbeidh, ach is dócha go mbeidh an bhua ag na Jeaicíní arís.

Bás.

Ráiseanna. Ainneóin na báistí ar uairibh bhí an- lá ag gach aon duine i Ráiseanna Baile ‘n tSagairt ó thráthnóna Dé Aoine dtí an nDomhnach. Tháinigh cluichí caide treasna ar Ráiseanna naomhóg Fhinn Trá. Bhí anráiseanna agus spóirt ann.

Dhein sé a chúram go feistithe agus thuigfeá go raibh sé ag baint an- shásamh as an saol. Bhí sé deisbhéalach agus cleachtúil agus bhreá leat bualadh leis. Bhí Tadhg i ngiorracht bliain don gceithre fichid, ach ní déarfá san in aon chor. Bhí sé coitianta leathchéad. Chaith sé blianta leis an mbriogáid dóiteán, agus ina bhúistéir.
