Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The feature at the Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 29th November will be the romantic period drama “The Light Between Oceans”. Based on the novel by M. L. Stedman this handsome adaptation is an emotional drama about fate, love, moral dilemmas and the lengths to which a couple will go to see their dreams realized. Starring Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz and set in the years after World War 1, “The Light Between Oceans” tells the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia who raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat. The following week on Tuesday 6th December the feature will be the Sci-Fi thriller “Arrival”. Amy Adams stars in this brilliantly exhilarating film as linguistics professor Louise Banks who leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.

Hope Guatemala 2016

are supporting Hope Guatemala to feed the Mayan children daily.

Hope Guatemala would like to thank you for your continued support during 2016. We started the year with the launch of our book, ‘The Children of the Finca Florencia’ which gives an account of the lives of the children and their families who are supported by our charity. It is in full colour and shows the work that Hope Guatemala is doing to feed 50 children daily and help the wider community. It is available at Greys’ Lane Bistro, Hedi O’ Neill’s Pottery and P.O. Ventry for €10.

If you would like to help you can click on to our website www.hopeguatemala.com where you can donate, subscribe to a direct debit or sponsor a child’s education. We all work voluntarily. Nobody gets paid. There are NO administration costs for our registered charity! Go Raibh Maith Agaibh go Léir. Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

The charity walk to Paidí Ó Sé’s Pub was a great fun day out for all the family in April. It was followed up by tortillas, Strange Attractor’s music and a super raffle. Féile na Bealtaine saw the launch of a play, ‘Gan Imní’ written and directed by Séan Mc Gillicuddy, showing the links between Guatemala and Ireland. He was inspired to create it after his visit to Guatemala in January last with founder Eddy Dieckmann where he experienced the poverty and deprivation of the Mayan people. We also welcomed two Mayan natives to the Féile, who work for our partner organisation in Guatemala, Dr. Hugo Icuperen, director of ASECSA and the administrator of same, Lety Cortez. Thank you for the fantastic welcome that you gave them!

Oxtail Stew and Asian Oxtail Broth Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Oxtail - an ingredient we may have forgotten about. It is one of our most underrated cuts of beef. There isn’t much meat on it but it is packed full of flavour. Some of us probably associate it with the packet soup from our childhood but if you revert back to the real thing you will notice that it adds so much flavour to soups, casseroles and stews. To get the most out of it make sure you cook it for a few hours to allow the meat to fall from the bone. I have included two recipes here; one is a really traditional warming oxtail stew that we may be familiar with and the other is a broth with asian flavours.

Cook this for about two minutes. Add in the tomatoes and then the wine and cook this for about 5 minutes until the liquid reduces and darkens in colour. At this stage the bones should be browned in the oven and you can add them to the pot along with any juices from the tray. You can now add the stock and some salt and pepper. Bring this to a boil and then turn it down to a low simmer. If you can let this cook for about 4 hours you will have a rich stew with the meat falling from the bones. You may need to add a little water if you feel there is not enough liquid in the pot. When you feel it is ready taste it and add salt and pepper if needed. Sprinle the chopped parsley over the stew and serve with some creamy mash.

Asian Oxtail Broth Ingredients 1.5kg oxtail, cut into chunks 1 large onion, sliced

Oxtail Stew

10 tomatoes, seed and cut into chunks (you can use a good can of tomatoes if you want)

Ingredients

piece of ginger, peeled and sliced

2kg oxtail, cut into chunks

1 star anise

1 large onion, cut into large dice

1 cinnamon stick

3 cloves of garlic, chopped

60ml soy sauce

1-2 sticks of celery, cut into large chunks

1 tbsp. corriander seeds, toasted and ground

1 leek, washed and chopped

1 tbsp. cumin, toasted and ground

3-4 carrots, washed, peeled and cut into large dice

for the garnish

1 tbsp. flour (optional) a few sprigs of thyme and rosemary 1 bay leaf 1 tbsp. tomato purée

1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced 1 lime, juiced bunch of corrinader, finely chopped 1 bunch of spring onions, chopped finely 1 bunch of egg noodles, cooked and drained

10 tomatoes, seeded and cut into large chunks 100ml red wine 800ml beef stock salt and pepper handful of flat parsley, finely chopped rapeseed oil Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Put the oxtail on a tray and roast for about 25 minutes. While this is happening brown off the vegetables. Start by heating a large casserole pot over a medium heat. Once it is hot add a little oil and then add the onions and stir them for about 2 minutes. Add the garlic, celery, and leeks and carrots (you can add the flour if you are using it). Let them brown for about 5 minutes but make sure you stir occasionally to prevent it all form burning. Add the herbs and bay leaf. Keep the heat high and then add the tomato purée. 10 West Kerry Live

www.westkerrylive.ie

Method Put the oxtail in a pot with water to cover and add tomatoes, cinnamon, star anise, soy sauce, coriander and cumin. Bring this to a boil and turn it down to a simmer. Cook for this about four hours. The meat should be falling off the bone. When the meat is done, add the chili, noodles and lime juice; taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Cook for at least one minute to make sure that the noodles are cooked. Put into deep bowls and sprinkle with the chopped coriander and spring onions. Enjoy!!!

Farming News Louis Murchan Slurry Spreading Deadline The season for spreading slurry/dung has passed, yet some find themselves in need of applying some for numerous reasons. If you feel that you need to do so, the advice to you is, DON’T. Farmers who are found to have breached the slurry spreading deadline, in extreme circumstances, could face up to three months in prison or a fine of up to €500,000, according to the Department of Housing and Local Government. The closed period for slurry spreading came into effect on October 15 and no extension to this date or individual exemptions to spread slurry were granted, the Department said. Section 26 (in Part 5) of the Nitrates Regulations outlines the offences and contraventions provisions as follows; Persons who contravene a provision of Parts 2 to 5 and schedule 5 of the regulations excluding Article 17(5), (6), (10) and (12) can be liable: •

On summary conviction to a Class A fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or both or,

On conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €500,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or to both such fine and such imprisonment.

The Department advises that it is also important to bear in mind that when a Local Authority does an inspection and identifies significant breaches of the regulations, they are obligated to report their findings to the Cross Compliance Unit of the Department of Agriculture. Farmyard Manure (FYM) •

Farmyard manure can be stored in a field prior to land spreading during the spreading period

You must not store farmyard manure in a field during the prohibited spreading period for farmyard manure

You must collect all seepage from farmyard manure when stored within the farmyard/shed

You can store it in a field during the spreading season, but you must store it in a compact heap and you cannot store it within the buffer zones outlined in

Farmyard manure cannot be stored on hardcore

Farmyard manure is the only organic fertiliser that may be stored in a field during the spreading season.

No other organic fertiliser may be stored in the field during the spreading period

The optimum Ph. for good grass growth is 6.3. Ryegrass and clover perform best at this Ph. and if it drops below this level it will lead to the establishment of poor unproductive grasses. Lime promotes the activity of worms and soil micro-organisms in the soil and it increases the availability of the different nutrients to the plants. This makes chemical fertiliser work more effectively and with the high cost of fertiliser this is very important. A small amount of lime every year is better than a lot in the one spreading. Cost Of Taking A Soil Sample And Lime:- An average soil sample for Lime, P, and K will cost €20.00 plus vat and the more in depth ones will cost more. Lime is very cheap compared to the cost of fertiliser and an average price would be €20 per acre spread depending on the lime and the contractor etc. APPLYING LIME AND SLURRY AND UREA:•

If you apply lime first then you have to wait 3-6 months before you apply slurry or urea

If you apply slurry or urea first then there is no problem when you apply lime

If you apply the lime first and then you apply slurry or urea it will cause ammonia volatilization which is a loss of money basically.

Liver Fluke Forecast November 2016 Each year, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine advises farmers of the predicted risk of disease caused by liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection in livestock based on advice received from the Liver Fluke Advisory Group. The Disease Forecast:- The risk of disease due to liver fluke infection is high for most parts of the country apart from isolated areas of the east and southeast where there is a risk of occasional losses in untreated animals. This forecast is based on meteorological data provided by Met Éireann with regard to weather conditions last winter and rainfall during the summer and early autumn of this year. Regional Veterinary Laboratories (Rvls) Liver Fluke Abattoir Elisa Survey Blood samples collected by Department staff from a semi-random selection of lambs born in 2016 (n=928) across 24 counties were tested for liver fluke antibodies by the RVLs to determine their level of exposure. The number of samples tested in 2016, when compared to 2015 figures, showing moderate to heavy challenge with liver fluke has increased by 22 and 24%, respectively. These moderately and heavily infected lambs were from the midlands and west of the country. Animal Health Ireland:- Further to the disease forecast, preliminary information from the Animal Health Ireland Beef HealthCheck programme suggests that nationally the frequency of fluke damaged livers in cattle at slaughter has increased slightly over the summer months and into the autumn, with live fluke detected at low but consistent levels through this period. The frequency of these findings is greatest in cattle going to slaughter from north western and western counties. The Beef HealthCheck programme now provides a high level of coverage of cattle nationally, and work is ongoing to analyse the information it provides.

Soil Sampling - Essential Reading Thanksgiving is here, or almost. Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends, out there. Christmas is coming but between now and then, it will be business as usual. The slatted tanks will be getting full of slurry and farmers are waiting hard will be waiting to spread slurry in the New Year once the slurry spreading ban to be up. With this being the slurry and fertiliser closed period, now is a good time to get your lands soil sampled as the lands have been free of slurry and chemical fertiliser for the correct period of time to get an accurate reading.

Farm-To-Farm Variation In assessing the risk of liver fluke disease on any particular farm, variation between individual farms in their soil type (whether soils are heavy or freedraining) must be taken into account, in addition to weather. The intermediate host, which is the mud snail, tends to be located in slightly acidic and muddy conditions. Thus, areas of fields with rushes are a particularly common location where mud snails can be found. Aside from local conditions on the farm and prior weather conditions, it is important that livestock owners also factor in prior liver fluke history on the farm.

How To Soil Sample :- This is done with a soil sampler which is placed into the soil at different locations in the field in the shape of a W. The soil is then placed into a bag or a box and sent away to a registered Laboratory. Your agricultural advisor will come out to your farm and take the soil samples for you and will send away the samples to a designated laboratory. Soil samples can be taken on fields growing any crops and when the soil samples return your advisor can do up a Fertiliser plan tailored to the crop you are growing.

Monitoring Of Disease:- Liver fluke infection tends to be chronic in cattle, resulting in ill thrift and poor performance. Similarly in sheep, chronic disease can occur. However, infection in sheep can also result in sudden death in cases of heavy challenge. Livestock owners should continue to be vigilant for any sign of illness, ill thrift or mortality in their stock and should consult with their veterinary practitioner for diagnosis of liver fluke infection or other potential cause(s) of these clinical signs. It is recommended to submit carcasses to a RVL for post mortem examination in cases where the cause of death is not obvious. Information from abattoir examination of livers (Beef HealthCheck reports for cattle) of previously sold fattened stock is also a valuable source of information to inform livestock owners of the incidence of liver fluke infection on their own farm or on the efficacy of their control program.

Soil Analysis:- Farmers submit soil samples for laboratory testing for two main reasons 1. Establish the available minerals present in the soil. This will enable the farmer and his adviser to determine the most appropriate fertiliser regime for the crop being grown. 2. Compliance with regulatory requirements. These come from EU Directives that specify criteria such as pH value, Phosphorus index and Organic Matter content The commonly tested in soil are: PH, Lime requirement, Phosphorus and Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Boron. Does Your Land Need Lime:- Lime is necessary to correct soil acidity and facilitate healthy plant growth. Soil acidity is measured on the pH scale 0 to 14.

Treatment And Control In areas of high risk and on farms where liver fluke infection has been diagnosed or there is a prior history, livestock owners should consult with their veterinary practitioner to devise an appropriate control or prevention program for liver fluke infection in their livestock. With regard to dosing, livestock owners need to factor in the time of year when doses are being given. For example, when treating in the autumn or early winter, treatment should be directed at all stages of the liver fluke (early, immature and mature stages). Later in the winter when animals are housed, treatment can be more directed towards mature stages.

www.westkerrylive.ie

Therefore, it is important that product choice to match the stage of development of liver fluke is considered when choosing a flukicide. Advice should be sought on the need (if any) for retreatment and the appropriate interval at which such treatments should be given. This is especially important given that resistance to flukicides is becoming an increasing concern. Where it is feasible, and as a long term control option, areas of fields which are suitable habitats for the intermediate host (wet muddy areas often containing clumps of rushes) should be either fenced off or drained. This will result in a permanent reduction of snail habitat. What About Rumen Fluke:- There have been significant, but as of yet isolated incidents, where immature rumen fluke has been diagnosed as the principal cause of mortality in both cattle and sheep on both the east and west coast in the last six weeks. Before unnecessary treatment, it is important that livestock owners seek advice from their veterinary practitioner and all cases of scouring or sudden deaths in cattle and sheep should be fully investigated. The finding of rumen fluke eggs alone in faecal samples is not reason enough to warrant treatment of animals.

Ted Talks: Mary MacAleese

They teach us in what for them is the most difficult way but and easy lesson for us to learn and that is just how important we are to each other and how deeply we rely on the goodness of each other. And I suppose they’re on the far end of that spectrum.

Ted Creedon This interview with the then President of Ireland, Mary MacAleese, on the occasion of her visit to Fenit to name the new RNLI Trent class lifeboat, Robert Hewell Jones Williams, was broadcast on Radio Kerry in September, 1999, as part of the South by Southwest series. Human nature at its Best The RNLI do the most extraordinary work. I’ve met them a few times now since I have become President. It’s been a great joy to meet these people because they are the most special people. They’re all volunteers and on the worst night of the year, when you and I pull down the shutters and sit by the fire and say Thank God I haven’t to go out in that, they’ll get a phone call to say somebody is out in that and is in danger.

Many’s the time we go through life I suppose not fully appreciating the dependency we do have on others. We talk about being very independent but the truth is we’ve relative levels of dependency on each other and I think that our lifeboat men and women teach us just how dependent we are on each other. It teaches us how reliant we are on the decency and the goodness, the generosity, the skill and the courage of these people. So it’s a particular joy to me to be able to come and name this boat today. I was just so delighted to be asked to come and do it because it’s a small enough thing for me to do, to be able to say in some small way “Thank you” for the work that you do on behalf of all of us. Of course, they’re part of a team involving other arms of the rescue services such as the Coast Guard and Valentia radio station and that is another example of our interdependency, one needing the other. Each of those services, they build up the jigsaw and they work together. It’s an example of human nature at its best.

They get up from their warm fire, out of their warm beds, away from their wives and husbands and away from their children. Why? Why do they do that? They’re volunteers. They do it out of such a respect for their fellow human beings. They’ll head out into weather that my mother would say you wouldn’t put a cat out in and not only do they head out into that weather but they head out into danger. They head out into circumstances where somebody is already in distress and very often they’re putting their lives at risk. It’s remarkable because the people they’re going out to help are more than likely to be complete strangers, by and large they’re strangers. Many of them, of course, will be fishermen, many will be people who may be out on a day’s recreational sailing. They’ll be strangers to them and in the work that they do I just think they teach us.

Jill Liston and Mary Devane Wilson (right) from Dingle with the long necked woman of Burma on a recent trip to Myanmar. Kayan long neck women wear the rings from childhood, starting with four or five, and adding more annually as they acclimate to the increased weight. Coils weighing up to 25 pounds depress the chest and shoulders. The origin of the tradition mystifies even the Kayans. An ancient legend claims rings protected villagers from tiger attacks, since the cats attack victims at the neck. Another theory said the rings helped ward off men from rival tribes by lessening the women’s beauty. Today, people believe the opposite– the longer their neck, the more beautiful the woman—and Kayans wear the golden coils as an accessory.

TV Corner with Tommy Kennedy For all those who rely on Saorsat to get their Irish channels and have been experiencing poor results over the summer especially when it is raining, the good news is that it seems to have resolved itself. From early summer to September signal levels being experienced were extremely low. Rain and dense fog seemed to cause major problems and this occured at some inconvenient times, the Ulster final and the first night of the Rose of Tralee as two examples of when it did not work this far west. Officially there is no known reason for this or even an acceptance that this was occurring. One possible explanation would be due to the fact you get your TV signal in a very different way to "regular" satellite TV. The signal for Saorsat, known as a KA band signal, can be more seriously affected by changes that occur several miles up in the atmosphere during Summer, these affects seem to be gone for now. If this was the case the same problems could be seen again next year as summer begins. From our contact with the company responsible for ensuring it operates correctly, known as 2RN, they are not being made aware of these issue by Saorsat users. They are not receiving any complaints. Maybe it was some technical issue that came and went by itself and may never be seen again. Of course, during torrential downpours there could be issues but these condition do not occur frequently and only last for short periods. If the service is not working properly during ordinary rainfall, dense fog, heavy mist or other common weather condition then you need to make your voice heard. There are probably only about 100 Saorsat users in West/Mid Kerry so its not easy to have an influence. I think it may not be a problem again until late spring or early summer next year but if it starts happening again this is the contact info for 2RN, 01 2082259 and/or email: rtenlpech@rte.ie If you have any other TV, aerial or satellite question you would like answered you can email westkerrytv@gmail.com or midkerrytv@gmail.com

Dingle Notes Richie Williams As reading material on a recent holiday I put Carl Flahertys book Dingle Before Fungi Came To Town In my suitcase and I can surely say I got many hours of pleasure from the 160 odd pages in this great production. It really makes an excellent Christmas present to be treasured by all age groups with Dingle connections. Carls easy style makes this book a wonderful read, very entertaining taking a look back at times past recalling many local characters and the innocent mischief in his youth here in Dingle. I hope he puts pen to paper again soon, Comhgairdeachas Carl. Black Friday is a term used in the Western World which like many other fads started in America and was copied very quickly by other countries. Basically its the unofficial start of the big Christmas spend. Arising from the shock and possible economic repercussions for us of Brexit and the American Election it is absolutely vital that we THINK LOCAL and SHOP LOCAL this year.

With such a wide range of reasonably priced goods and services now available locally we appeal to everybody to commit to at least leaving some of their funds in the Peninsula this Christmas. Research shows that every €10 spent in an area will circulate two and a half times in the same locality through wages etc so yes your money spent locally really helps the local economy. Thank You. Comhgairdeachas o croi to Paul Geaney on his recent selection in the 2016 Football All Stars and lets hope that this is the first of many for a very talented young man. A big Céad Míle Fáilte to all involved in the 2016 Other Voices programme and particularly to those who are coming to Dingle for the first time. This weekend has blossomed into one of the major events here and of major benefit to the Peninsula through the direct economic spend and the on going spin off through television exposure for many years to come. Féile Na Soilse coincides with the Other Voices weekend on December3rd and 4th with shopping discounts, Farmers Market offers and the Lantern Parade starting at 5p.m. from Bridge Street on the Sunday

Mar pháirt d’ár dtionscnamh Oideachas Sóisialta, faoi stiúr an Iníon de Brún, bhailíomar bróga ar son na carthanachta ‘Jacket Off Your Back’. Is carthanacht iad seo a bhailíonn éadaí agus bróga do theifigh a bhíonn ag taisteal na hEorpa i rith an gheimhridh. Chaitheamar dhá mhí á mbailiú mar go raibh cuid mhaith bróga ag teacht isteach chugainn ó dhaltaí na scoile, muintir na háite, bunscoileanna an cheantair agus Play at Height, sa Daingean agus i gCill Áirne. Bhí próiséas fada i gceist, bhí orainn na péirí a cheangailt le chéile agus ansin málaí a líonadh agus na péirí a chomhaireamh. Bhíomar lonnaithe i leabharlann na scoile, le cead ón bpríomhoide, Pádraig Firtéar. Ba mhaith linn ár mbuíochas a ghabháil le foireann agus daltaí na scoile, na bunscoileanna áitiúil agus muintir na háite a bhí chomh cabhrach agus flaithiúil. Ár mbuíochas speisialta do Play at Height a chuir iliomad bróga ar fáil dúinn, a bhí bailithe mar chuid d’fheachtas bailiúchán éadaí acu féin. Chomh maith le sin ba mhaith linn buíochas a ghabháil le n’ár bpríomhoide, Pádraig Firtéar, agus foireann na scoile a chuir áiseanna na scoile ar fáil dúinn. Buíochas ar leith d’ár múinteoir Oideachas Sóisialta, Bernadait de Brún, a thug sár thacaíocht agus spreagadh dúinn. Ba mhór againn í. Ar deireadh, tá thart ar míle cúig chéad péire bróg bailithe againn agus tá súil againn go ndéanfaidh sé seo difríocht mhór i saol na dteifeach bochta atá go mór ina ngátar. Tugann sé sólás ó chroí dúinne go bhfeabhsóidh na bróga seo an saol dóibh píosa éigin. Go mairfidh is go gcaithfidh siad iad. 22 West Kerry Live

afternoon.Who is going to light the Christmas tree this year ???. Only time will tell so be there to find out yourself. Great to see some parents have got together to revive the Community Games here in Dingle again. A committee was elected at a recent meeting in Benners Hotel so volunteers are needed to look after the various sports and particularly training sessions for the different disciplines which are incorporated in the Community Games activities. We do have some very talented people so please get involved and give the youth of the area every opportunity to experience as many activities as possible. Slán Tamall.

Microsuction is the safest, most effective way of cleaning wax build-up and any obstruction caused by foreign bodies down the ear canal. The procedure uses a finely balanced medical suction device which is complimented by a sophisticated microscope. This provides a magnified light source to enable the delicate structures of the ear canal to be viewed throughout the whole procedure. MICROSUCTION EAR WAX REMOVAL IS SUITABLE FOR:

Camphill News Betsie Konink. On Sunday we had a beautiful sunny day for our craft fair. We had a really good day with lots of visitors and nice music (thanks to the local ukulele band and Linda Galvin). Thank you all for supporting us. We raised about €3,500 for our building fund. We have started to pay off the loan and also still need some work done in the Cois Chnoic houses. For those of you who could not come on the day but would still like to buy some crafts - candles, hand woven scarfs, rugs and other small items, jams, chutneys or choose your own Christmas tree from our forest, we will be open every Wednesday from 3 till 5 and Saturday from 2 till 4. Now it is quietening down. The days are shorter and we have started with rehearsals for the Christmas play, Christmas baking and making presents. The play will be on the 21st of December in the Lab.

Keel GAA Mid Kerry Championship Keel hosted Beaufort in their Mid Kerry Championship round one replay on Sunday. The visitors had the better start and when Padraig Doona scored a goal after 12 minutes they led 1-3 to 0-1. Keel came back with 4 points from Martin Burke and 3 from Gary Sayers but Beaufort led 1-8 to 0-7 at half time. Francis Courtney and Terry O'Sullivan exchanged points at the start of the second half before one of the pivotal moments of the match. Martin Burke was proving very influential for Keel but he picked up a black card, on top of a yellow in the first half, meant a red card and Keel were down to 14 and 4 points behind. Two Gary Sayers frees cut the deficit to 2 but points from Doona, Fergal Hallissey and Courtney and Beaufort's second goal by Liam Carey made it Keel 0-10 Beaufort 2-12 entering the final quarter. Keel battled on with five more points coming from Sayers but points by Darragh Coffey 2 and Courtney kept daylight between the two teams. Final Score Keel 0-15 Beaufort 2-15 Keel: Stephen Cahillane, Gavin Evans, Gary Nagle, Emmet Ashe, Colm O'Neill, Donal O'Neill, James Nagle, Thomas Ladden, Martin Burke(0-4), Aaron Cahillane, Gary Sayers(0-10 6f), Barth Murphy, Luke Flynn, Aaron Murphy, Terry O'Sullivan(0-1). Dear Santa Lets Keep Our ‘Presence’ Anne Healy

that help him regulate his feelings, develop the skill of waiting, listening, accepting rules, have fun and best of all have the full ‘presence’ of his mother. One of our game is ‘balloon tennis’ this is something you can do at home. All you need is a balloon and tons of patience… and five minutes or ten minutes of your time! The rules are the balloon has to be kept in the air and you can only use your hands to do this. No kicking or no head passes. It can be played with the whole family in the kitchen. Over the weeks we have had lots of fun doing this and yes there were a few hiccups when the child forgot to keep the rules. Once we reminded him of the rules and supported him on how well he was doing we would start the game again. The magic was the fun, the squeals of laughter and the shared activity between this boy and his mother and seeing this child over the past number of weeks stopping himself from a tantrum when the game was not going the way. Another activity I use with his child and his mother is storytelling. I love storytelling as a means of helping children understand their feeling and the feelings of others. What storytelling offers includes:

Cartún: Domhnall Bric

• Stories and storytelling help to develop positive character traits in children by promoting a sense of shared experiences and emotions related to the characters and challenges dealt with in the stories (Jalongo, 2004). • Storytelling allows the child to act out the fears and understandings that are not easily expressed in day to day routine (Kaufman, 1997).

Lots of the children that I am meeting at the moment are telling me about what they are writing to Santa Claus to bring to them for Christmas. Behind these children’s lovely sparkling eyes I see glimpses of the magic as if they already imagine Santa and his crew of reindeers dropping off his bag of presents especially for them. I feel childlike myself as their sense of expectancy is contagious. Santa is being asked to bring lots presents of various sizes and prices. Heading the lists are ‘screens’ as they are collectively known. In fact only yesterday one of the children told me he was getting a new tablet for Christmas and for a few moments I wondered if the child was going on some kind of medication. Luckily I copped on and nodded away as he told all about what he will do on the tablet. Behind him his mother was throwing her eyes up to the high heavens! I saw stress behind her eyes! And with this in mind I want to talk in this article about staying ‘present’ to yourself and whether you are a parent, grandparent or carer during the weeks ahead! And one way to do this is to find time each day to pause for a few moments and play alongside children. You may say I do that already! Or you may say ‘I have no time’! That been said I would like over the next few weeks to offer you a few suggestions that are fun and truly engaging for you and for children and guaranteed to please one and all! As we know play is essential for healthy child development. It is where children learn to be imaginative, creative, solve problems, give and take and to collaborate. A rich addition to playing is when an adult plays alongside a child. This adds a connecting and extra meaning to the value of play. I know this from experience given that I have had the privilege of playing alongside children ranging in age from two to twelve years over a long period of time. I also know it from my own experience as a child and the riches bestowed on me by my lovely neighbours as they played chase, drafts, snap, hide and go seek or read to me. Even as a little girl I knew when they played with me they are fully present to me and I felt seen and valued. Reflect for a moment and think about an adult that played with you as a child! It could be a parent, neighbour or relation! What did you play? How did you feel? Would you have liked if your parents played with you if they did not? Think of games you played as a child and share them with your child, grandchild are a child that you care for. To illustrate what I do to promote play between children and parents I will tell you the following story as a means of an example as to what you can do. Though you will have your ideas too! While this example pertains to a child with a specific challenge the activity I outline can be done with most children. One of the children I met this week struggles with waiting his turn and gets really frustrated if he does not get what he wants immediately. Obviously this creates stress for him and his mother and it also flows into the classroom. We do certain activities 32 West Kerry Live

So for example for the past few weeks this mother and her son have made a story bag that brings stories alive. One of the stories that this child loves is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. So in the story bag they have put bowls, spoons chairs little bears and little paper beds. The mother reads the story and her son and his siblings act out the story with the little objects from the story bag. She asks some of the following questions: What do you think Goldilocks is feeling? What are the bears feeling? Have you ever felt like that? Have you ever felt like that? What should the bears do? Could they have done something different? You can use the above example to adapt to any story and for any age child. To come back to the child I spoke about above the mother called me after out session to say that the balloon game we played had triggered some memories for her as a child and games she played with her brother. Her memory included her parents never finding time to play because of their own stresses in life and what an absence this was not as she was sure they were playful people who thought playing was only between children. She is resolved to find time to play alongside her child especially the fact that her son is managing his feelings really well. But what has struck her most is the joy she gets as she feels the delight her son and her other children get from her making time to be present and playful with them. To conclude, in the next few weeks I will add to the suggestions above about how to be present and playful to your children in the lead up to what can be a stressful time. Meanwhile take time to pause, breathe and connect to yourself and your child or children. Try not to allow the hysteria of what you should and not do take you over. Remember your loving face on Christmas morning is far more important in the life of your child than any screen or ‘tablet’. So let’s write a letter to Santa to keep our presence! And remember: ‘At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents’. - Jane D. Hull. And also grandparents, carers and teachers! ‘A macabre masterpiece, Ghostly, grisly and gorgeous. Don’t miss it’ – Three Weeks West Kerry Live 37

Bhí comóradh i Séipéal an Bhuailtín ar an nDomhnach seo caite ar Tomás ó Muircheartaigh atá caoga blian básaithe. Luaidh an tAthair Tomás ó hÍcí go leor do shaintréithe Fr Tom mar a tugtaí air. Fear as an ngnáth b’ea an tAthair Tomás (Parthálán) Ó Muircheartaigh a bhí ina Shagart Paróiste i mbeatha an tsagairt ón gCuas go Ceann an Dúna, Dhún Chaoin sna blianta Fr Tom O Muircheartaigh 1936 –‘66. Nuair a bhíos ar an mbun scoil, is mé a thugadh an bainne go tigh an tSagairt ar an mBuailtín ó thigh Uí Chinnéide ar an mbaile. Is minic a chuireadh an S.P. cath orm. Uair bhí sé am chomhairliú ar conas an bheart a dhéanamh ar dhaoine go mbeadh mustar ag sileadh leo nó lucht gliocais. ‘Lig ort ná tuigeann tú cúrsaí, nó gur sort leath-amadán tú agus faid is a bheidh siad san i mbun mór is fiú, beidh an bheart déanta agat ortha,’ ar sé. ‘Níorbh aon scoláire mór mise ach bhíos glic’, arsa Fr. Tom liom lá eile agus leamhgháire ar a cheannaithe. ‘Níor cheart duit a bheith róthógtha le scoileanna, mar ‘sé a dheineann siad ná do mhisneach a bhriseadh.’ Bhí an bhean seo ag cur fúithi ar an mBuailtín agus mé im gharsún beag ag freastal ar Bhunscoil an Fhirtéaraigh. Bhí a tigh istigh i ngort lastuas don mbaile. Uaireanta bhuaileadh taom í agus théadh sí amach lasmuigh don ndoras agus bhíodh ag scéachaigh agus ag liúraigh agus ag baisteachán ar dhuine éigin ón mbaile. [Is amhlaidh go raibh sí i dtaisme tráchta i Meiriceá agus thárla scata gortaithe di go mór mhór dá ceann, an bhean bhocht] ‘Bombs’ a thugadh an dream óg uirthi. Lá bhí sí ag gabháil thar Fr. Tom agus cheistigh sé í an gcuala sí na ‘buamaí’, a bhí ann an óiche roimhis sin. ‘Is trua’, ar sí leis, ‘nár bhuail ceann acu tú thiar sa tóin’. ‘Dá maróinn duine a athair, ar pheaca marfach é agus an raghfainn go hIfreann’, arsa an fear seo go raibh an gumh dearg air dtí comharsa. ‘Bí ag marú leat faid is ná maróir mise’, arsa an sagart glic, magúil leis. Uair eile i mbosca na faoistine cheistigh an sagart fear ó Dhún Chaoin. ‘Tá deoch ólta agat’? ‘Tá’. ’Agus tán tú lán suas go poll do phaidrín. Cá bhfuairis?’ ‘Fuaireas ó Khruger é [ Ó Caomhánaigh ] go raibh síbín aige sarar bhfuair sé ceadúnas dí ] ar leathréal an muga’. Bhí fianaise an bhosca faoistine fachta ag Fr. Tom ná raibh ró-gheal do Khruger de bharr an tsíbín. Cuimhníonn go leor agaibh go ndúirt sé, ‘Baile Dháith, aon fhód agus Baile Reo chomh maith leo’. Lá agus é ag caitheamh thairis, dúirt Fr. Tom liom, ná raibh aon pheaca ar aon duine, ‘ar an dtaobh seo do Chathair Uí Mhóráin’, atá in aice le Trá Lí. Bhíos ag caint leis lá eile agus cad é, ach bhí fear aosta áitiúil ar a shlí chugainn. ‘Féach i leith’, arsa Fr Tom, ‘táim cráite ag an bhfear céanna agus a chuid paidreacha. Ní fhágann sé an sáipéal go am iata agus bíonn sé chugainn arís ar maidin’. ‘Dia dhuit, a athair,’ arsa an seanóir. ‘Caithfead dul abhaile chun dinnéir.‘Is mór an trua san’, arsa Fr. Tom. ‘Canathaobh nár thugais dorn ceapairí leat agus níor ghá dhuit dul abhaile go am iata an tsáipéil’. Chuaigh fear neamhfhiúntach, saonta dtí Fr. Tom lá. Bhí uaidh go nathródh Fr. Tom teastas breithe duine dá chlann ó 1948 go ’45. Bhí Fr. Tom ag féachaint air ar feadh scaithimh. Tréis tamaill las an leamhgháire ar a aghaidh agus dúirt, ‘m’fhéidir go bhfuil dhá chluais mhóra orm, ach ní asal ar fad mé’.

Kerry ETB Learners Get Jobs and Progress to Higher Education

Participation in further education is getting people in Kerry jobs as well as places on University and Institute of Technology courses. A new study shows that courses originally set up either as a bridge from basic education or as an alternative route to college are now in fact playing an additional role in helping people get jobs especially in rural Kerry. About a third of all adults who take up full time further education courses with Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) go straight into employment and close to a half of all Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) students go on to further or higher education according to the findings of a new study launched as part of National College Awareness Week which take places from 21-27 November. Traditionally education providers have always looked at the number of students that sign up for courses and what qualifications they leave with. We bring you the finest quality kitchen and bedroom units But typically it was not always known what people actually did with those qualifications afterwards. This new study, just completed by Kerry ETB, at extremely competitive and affordable prices. examined the destination of learners some months after course completion as well as retention and certification rates. Project staff conducted a follow up telephone survey with over 600 PLC learners across some 46 courses and almost 80 VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme) learners in eight different courses. Almost 80% of all PLC students and 100% of VTOS completed their course with the majority of them achieving a Major Award in their chosen field of learning. PLC Further Education Colleges were set up to provide further education and skill training for jobs as well as an access route to further and higher EXTENSIVE RANGE OF TRADITIONAL education, so in many ways the results here were to be anticipated. VTOS however is a two year bridging programme aimed at adults and young & CONTE M P OR ARY DESIG NS people over the age of 21 who either do not have a Leaving Certificate or • BEDROOM & LIVINGROOM UNITS • BAR & SHOP FITTINGS need to up-skill. PLC Demographics CONTACT PAUL O’BRIEN @ 086 2433674 The population is two thirds female and one third male. Kerry College of Muiríoch, Baile Na nGall Further Education (KCFE) in Tralee has the highest male participation rate, followed by North Kerry College (NKC) in Listowel. Countywide figures show that most learners were under the age of 26 years, one in five were between the age of 26-40 and only one in ten were over the age of 40 years. But each town tells it’s own story. Tralee had the youngest population, while a quarter of PLC learners in Listowel were over the age of 40 years and in Caherciveen half of all PLC learners were over 40 years, reflecting the demographic makeup of the county. The study also found that young males (under 26 years) were more likely to enter employment whereas as females of this age were more likely to progress to further or higher education. VTOS Demographics VTOS then presents a different image with the majority of the learners over the age of 41 years, suggesting that the programme is playing a vital role in up-skilling / re-skilling and providing second chance education for early school leavers or people who just find that their skills need updating. Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Ná casaigí ar Bhéarla! Tuigim Gaeilge Go minic má bhíonn beirt nó triúr ag caint le chéile as Gaeilge agus tagann duine eile ina láthair atá ag foghlaim na Gaeilge nó nach bhfuil an teanga céad faoin gcéad ar a thoil aige, ar thug tú faoi deara go bhfuil sé de nós agus de chleachtas ann casadh ar Bhéarla? Ba mhaith le daoine bheith cúirtéiseach agus níor mhaith leo bheith drochbhéasach. Is nósmhaireacht í seo nach mbaineann le Gaeilge amháin ach baineann le hiompar daoine ar fud na cruinne a bhfuil an dá theanga ar eolas acu. Ach, ar rith sé riamh leat b’fhéidir gur mhaith leis an duine sin “ar bheagán Gaeilge” go leanfadh caint an chomhluadair ar aghaidh trí mheán na Gaeilge? Tugann sé deis dóibh bheith ag éisteacht leis an teanga agus codanna di a thuiscint agus a shú isteach. Cuimhnigh air ! Seo gníomhaíocht don phlean teanga a bheidh agat go luath. Don’t switch to English! I understand Irish! Often if there are two or three people talking together in Irish and another person comes on the scene who is learning Irish or whose grasp of the language is not one hundred per cent. Out of courtesy, the two or three speaking in Irish will switch to English. People want to be courteous and they do not want to be rude and exclude others on the basis of their apparent lack of language. This is standard practice worldwide among people with knowledge of two languages. But, did it ever occur to you that the person with “a bit of Irish” might actually want speakers in their company to continue speaking the language? It allows them to listen to the language and absorb and understand it. Think about it! This is an action point for you in your Language Plan which will be complete soon. - - Muiris Ó Laoire, Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Thrá Lí, Co. Chiarraí.

West Kerry U16 Championship Final 2016 An Ghaeltacht 1-15 to Dingle 0-11 An Ghaeltacht are the West Kerry U16 Champions after beating Dingle in Gallarus last Sunday 20th November, An Ghaeltacht 1-15 to Dingle 0-11. An Ghaeltacht were convincing winners and led from start to finish in sun drenched Gallarus. Playing with the aid of what little breeze was in Gallarus it was An Ghaeltacht who started the game in whirlwind fashion. Steven Ó Conchúir with two points from frees and a point from play had An Ghaeltacht 3 points ahead after 5 minutes of play. Dingle got on the scoreboard with a point from a free kick from Dylan Geaney. An Ghaeltach’s Conn Ó Riagáin was causing a lot of problems for the Dingle defence and points from Franz Sauzerland, Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí and two from Steven Ó Conchúir put An Ghaeltacht 6 points ahead after 15 minutes of play, An Ghaeltacht 0-7 to Dingle 0-1. A Thomas Devane point for Dingle kept them in the game but this was cancelled out by another Steven Ó Conchúir point for An Ghaeltacht. Dylan Geaney and Daividas Uosis for Dingle exchanged points with An Ghaeltacht’s Cathal Ó Beaglaoí and Steven Ó Conchúir and when Referee Johnny O’Shea blew the halftime whistle the scoreboard read, An Ghaeltacht 0-10 to Dingle 0-4. On the restart it was An Ghaeltacht who got the vital first score through a Steven Ó Conchúir point from play. Thomas Devane kicked a point from play for Dingle before Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí made light of Dingle’s defence and scored the game’s only goal for An Ghaeltacht. Two pointed frees from Dylan Geaney gave Dingle a lifeline but points from Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí and Cathal Ó Beaglaoí cancelled this out to leave the score after 15 minutes gone in the second half, An Ghaeltacht 1-13 to Dingle 0-7. Dingle tried to rally and points from Eoin de hÓra, Thomas Devane, Dylan Geaney and Conor Flannery left them 5 points behind. An Ghaeltacht responded with a Steven Ó Conchúir point from a free kick and a Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí point from play but with time running out and Dingle continuing to press forward it was An Ghaeltacht defence that stood firm and when Referee Johnny O’Shea blew the fulltime whistle the scoreboard read, An Ghaeltacht 1-15 to Dingle 0-11.

West Kerry Minor Championship Final 2016 An Ghaeltacht 1-9 to Dingle 2-12 Dingle retained the West Kerry Minor Championship Shield in Gallarus last Sunday 13th November and in doing so make it a four in a row of West Kerry Minor Championship Titles for the town side. Dingle playing against the wind were first to raise the white flag with a point from a free kick from Daividas Uosis. An Ghaeltacht responded with two pointed frees from Steven Ó Conchúir and points from play from Liam Ó Bambaire and Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí. With 10 minutes gone An Ghaeltacht keeper Eoin Ó Suilleabháin saved brilliantly from a Luke O’Connell shot. Shortly after a run from Dingle’s Mikey Boyle opened An Ghaeltacht’s defence and when he passed it to Thomas Devane, Devane made no mistake when he blasted his shot to the Gaeltacht net for Dingle’s first goal. A point from Ruadhan McCarthy and a pointed free from Mikey Boland extended Dingle’s lead. An Ghaeltacht responded with a Jeaic Ó Muircheartaigh point from play and another Steven Ó Conchúir pointed free. The last 5 minutes of the first half was all Dingle and a pointed free from Daividas Uosis and two points from play from Ruadhan McCarthy and Thomas Devane left them with a one goal lead. A great team move by Dingle saw their corner back Colin Moriarty at the end of a passing movement and he made no mistake when he calmly slotted home for Dingle’s second goal. When Referee Billy O’Shea blew the halftime whistle the scoreboard read, An Ghaeltacht 0-6 to Dingle 2-6. Dingle started the second half in whirlwind fashion and points from Daividas Uosis with two, Ruadhan McCarthy, Chris Keane and Mikey Boland left them with an eleven point lead after 10 minutes gone in the second half. An Ghaeltacht rallied but two pointed frees from Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí were all that the home

side could manage as Dingle were defending well. Daividas Uosis kicked a pointed free for Dingle who looked to be in control but An Ghaeltacht continued to bring the game to them and a goal from Seán Ó Lúing and another pointed free from the boot of Rúairí Ó Beaglaoí narrowed Dingle’s lead. With time running out An Ghaeltacht continued to press forward but the Dingle defence stood firm and when Referee Billy O’Shea blew the fulltime whistle the scoreboard read, An Ghaeltacht 1-9 to Dingle 2-12. tle concede early and chasing the game from there. Asdee were used to playing on the heavy surface and took their chances well to take the 3 points. Castle created plenty chances and but for some superb saves from a new Asdee keeper the scoreline would have had a different look. Some dubious refereeing decisions also made it difficult. Overall, one loss in 6 games is still very positive and lots of good displays particularly from the younger players like Patrick O Donoghue & Brandon Hoare. Buying goods online Question I have ordered a few presents from a Belgian website. Can I return them if I’m not happy with them when they arrive? Answer Online purchases within the EU are covered by the EU Directive on Consumer Rights. Under this Directive you are entitled to a cooling-off period of 14 days. During the cooling-off period, you can cancel distance contracts such as online purchases without giving a reason and without incurring charges or penalties, other than possible charges incurred in returning the goods. The 14-day cooling-off period begins on the day that you receive the goods. Upon cancellation, the distance seller is obliged to repay you within 14 days, including delivery costs. If you chose a more expensive type of delivery than the seller’s cheapest standard delivery, you are only entitled to be refunded the cost of the cheaper delivery type. The seller can withhold the repayment until the goods are returned or until you supply evidence that you have sent the goods back. You must send the goods back within 14 days of informing the seller of the cancellation. You have to pay for the cost of returning them, unless the seller did not inform you before

you ordered the goods that you would have to bear the cost. The seller should have provided you with confirmation of the contract, as well as information on aftersales and guarantees, how to cancel the contract and a postal address for complaints. If the seller did not provide you with information on your right to cancel, the

cooling-off period can be extended by 12 months. Cancellation may not be accepted in certain cases, for example, if the goods were made especially for you. Further information is available from the European Consumer Centre and the Citizens Information Centre below.

Posterior Impingement Syndrome (Ankle) Eddie O’ Grady Posterior ankle impingement is a condition characterised by tissue damage at the back of the ankle joint due to compression of these structures. This occurs when the foot and ankle are pointed maximally away from the body (plantarflexion – figure 1. ). It may occur when compressive forces are too repetitive and/or too forceful. This can occurs in the presence of ankle swelling or bony anomalies, such as additional bone, a condition known as an “os trigonum”. Posterior ankle impingement is most commonly found in gymnasts, ballet dancers, and footballers, because they regularly maximally plantarflex their ankles during their activities. The condition can also occur due to inadequate rehabilitation of an acute ankle injury (ie. ankle sprain).

Fig 1 Mechanism of Injury Posterior ankle impingement may develop due to an acute traumatic plantar hyperflexion event, such as an ankle sprain. It may also occur as a result of repetitive low-grade trauma associated with plantar hyperflexion, say like in case of a female ballet dancer. It is important to differentiate between these two, because the latter, that is posterior impingement from overuse, has a better prognosis. The anatomy of the posterior ankle is a key factor in the occurrence of posterior impingement syndrome . The more common causes of the condition are osseous in nature, such as the os trigonum, an elongated posterolateral tubercle of the talus (known as Stieda’s process), a downward sloping posterior lip of the tibia, an osteophyte from the posterior distal tibia , or a prominent posterior process of the calcaneus. However, posterior impingement can also be soft tissue related, as with a thickened posterior joint capsule , post-traumatic scar tissue, post-traumatic calcifications of the posterior joint capsule, or loose bodies in the posterior part of the ankle joint. Symptoms for all of these conditions relate to physical impingement of osseous or soft tissue structures, resulting in painful limitation of the full range of ankle movement. The most common cause ‘’os trigonum’’ is an extra (accessory) bone that sometimes develops behind the ankle bone (talus). The mineralized os trigonum appears between the ages of 7 and 13 years and usually fuses 46 West Kerry Live

with the talus within 1 year, forming the trigonal (Stieda) process. It may remain as a separate ossicle in 7-14% of patients, and is often bilateral(in both ankles). An os trigonum can be a focus of osseous abutment against other structures. Pain can also be caused by disruption of the cartilaginous synchondrosis between the os trigonum and the lateral talar tubercle as a result of repetitive microtrauma and chronic inflammation. In the case of soft tissue impingement it usually results from scarring and fibrosis associated with synovial, capsular, or ligamentous injury ie. bad ankle sprain. It is thought that this type of manifestation usually usually occurs when a significant soft-tissue component forms. The soft-tissue component can consist of synovial thickening throughout the posterior capsule or be more focal, involving the posterior intermalleolar or talofibular ligament. The flexor hallucis longus tendon runs in the groove between the lateral and medial processes of the talus and can also be injured in posterior impingement, resulting in tenosynovitis. Signs and symptoms of posterior ankle impingement Patients who have posterior impingement complain of chronic deep posterior ankle pain worsened by forced plantar flexion or pushoff forces as occur during activities such as ballet dancing, jumping, or running downhill. In some patients, forced dorsiflexion(opposite to plantarflexion) is also painful. Physical examination reveals pain on palpation over the posterolateral talar process, which is located along the posterolateral aspect of the ankle between the Achilles and peroneal tendons (Fig. 2. ankle). Passive forced plantar flexion results in pain and often a grinding sensation as the posterolateral talar process is entrapped between the posterior tibia and calcaneus.(Fig. 3. ankle)

Fig 2 Diagnosis of posterior ankle impingement A thorough examination by an experienced practitioner may be all that is necessary to diagnose posterior ankle impingement. Further investigations such as an X-ray, MRI, CT scan or Ultrasound may help confirm diagnosis. Treatment Initial treatment of posterior impingement consists of rest, ice, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Injection of steroids, perhaps under ultrasound guidance, is also effective for symptom relief and for reduction of swelling. If conservative measures fail, operative treatment may be recommended. Areas of soft-tissue impingement are debrided. Bone spurs or an os trigonum are removed, typically in an open procedure in

www.westkerrylive.ie

Fig 3 light of the proximity of the sural nerve, tibial nerve, and flexor hallucis longus tendon. In general, operative results are excellent, as the offending structures that caused the mechanical impingement have been removed. Many athletes are able to resume running four to six weeks after surgery. Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. (hons.) M.I.A.P.T. Covering Dingle, Killarney & Tralee. 086-7700191

Time To Turn Up Your Inner Central Heating! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Brrrrrr - here comes the chill! Most of us have stocked up with winter fuel, extra layers and the trusty thermals by now but have you considered that what you eat and drink during the winter months influences your body’s central heating? Now is the time to stoke your inner furnace to stay warm from the inside out! Similar to the fuel you use to heat your house, certain foods are more efficient at providing heat than others. The concept that food has an intrinsic capacity to warm or cool the body is well documented and central to every indigenous eating pattern for both humans and animals. Today, researchers are studying this aspect of nutrition called “The Post-Digestive Effect of Foods”. Simply put, it means that the quality and characteristics of food outside the body alters once it is eaten and digested, dependent of the vitality of the individual and its connection to the food. It looks at the broader appeal of food, beyond taste and texture - the ultimate role of food, as nourishment, which goes well beyond our palate. How well would we be, as a population, if we truly considered the wider picture of food? If the full consequence of food quality and its effect on health was the purpose of eating we would cease to rely on charlatan food merchants who have systematically used taste and texture to slowly poison us over the last few decades. We must relearn that food, its season, us and Nature are best working together, for each other to maintain balance, health and vitality. This is true in every season, Nature provides what we need, when we need it or at least points us in the right direction! In Winter, the vegetables that help your body stay warm are the root vegetables and hearty winter greens. Any vegetable that takes time to grow and whose edible part grows beneath the surface of the ground, or any vegetable that likes the cold weather, is usually warming and a good vegetable to eat in winter. Kale, cabbage, spinach and brussels sprouts taste sweeter after a bout of frost. You may also need to increase your intake of hearty proteins such as meat, fish, nuts and beans. These are best cooked slowly as in stews, casseroles and soups. Grains are predominately heavy post-digestion, making them a good Winter food but some are better than others. Oats, whole wheat, brown short grain rice, quinoa and amaranth provide long-lasting heat and energy during the Winter months. Other grains such as buckwheat, rye and corn are best eaten during Spring due to their water-removing diuretic properties which can cool the body too quickly. For food staples such as bread - soda bread or sourdough bread provides better sustenance this time of year. Yeast produces gas, which is what makes bread rise, but can be more difficult to digest in Winter. Toasting can improve 48 West Kerry Live

Castlegregory Cake Sale

digestibility but yeast breads are better eaten in Summer when heat is high and digestion is stronger. For additional heat add warming spices such as cloves, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, turmeric, fenugreek, cayenne and black pepper when cooking or in warm drinks. Not only do they taste great, these spices can improve circulation. Healthy circulation is crucial to feeling warm all over. Foods that improve circulation include ginger, garlic, omega 3 fatty acids in oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds, and Vitamin E found in seeds and nuts. Warm herbal teas such as ginger tea, fennel, peppermint, lemon and sweet chai have a thermal effect that will warm the cockles of your heart. Regular tea and coffee can have a diuretic effect which cools the body. An important factor to consider in the care of the elderly as they have a slower metabolism and feel the cold more. Warm, aromatic broths made with root vegetables and barley with ginger, turmeric and black pepper will keep that furnace glowing longer and can help keep away cold weather-related illnesses such stomach viruses, arthritic pain as well as colds and flus. Avoid foods high in saturated, animal fat and fried foods, they will not insulate the body! Quite the opposite as fatty deposits impede circulation making it more difficult to move heat around the body. As the festive season draws nearer be aware that alcohol can often be mistaken as warming, but in reality the increased blood flow to the skin that reddens our cheeks leads to heat loss leaving us more vulnerable to the cold. Warm cocktails such as hot port, mulled wine or spiced apple drinks makes use of warming spices such as ginger, star anise, cloves and cinnamon not only for flavour but to counteract the negative cooling effect of alcohol but as with most things, moderation is the key!

There will be a cake sale in aid of SVP in Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory on Friday, December 9th from 11-1 pm. All are welcome. Please support this worthy cause. All proceeds go back into the community.
