Penrose can now be described as a solid Indie Pop band with catchy uplifting inide songs and anthems that have “attitude” and stick in your head. Mixing the pop sensibilities& harmonies of The Beatles / ELO, the snarling vocals of Richard Ashcroft and the rhythmic acoustic guitars of Oasis, Penrose are a truly powerful force…live and on record. The guys are ready to make their mark on the international music scene.

Farming News

Louis Murchan

What Is Stress?

Farming is unlike any other job on earth were you are working more hours than everyone else and get less pay. Farming is more than just a job it’s a way of life and tradition that has being handed down from generation to generation. A farmer recently quoted as saying that you wouldn’t wish farming on your worst enemy at the moment. This sums up how things are at the moment in the farming world and it is very hard not to get down and stressed by all the negatives that are coming at farmers. What is stress? Anyone can suffer from stress. Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand that makes you feel threatened or upsets your balance in some way. When working properly, stress helps you to stay focused, energetic, and alert. But beyond a certain point, it can stop being helpful and start causing damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships and your quality of life What causes stress? Many different things can cause stress. The very nature of farming means that a lot of our daily lives are not under our control, for example changes, in weather or commodity prices. Other common causes of stress include: bureaucracy, paperwork, complexity of farm schemes, cross-compliance inspections, reduced incomes, financial problems, work load, responsibility, health and safety on the farm, feeling isolated and relationship difficulties. Coping with stress:- There are many things you can do to help yourself, from changing the way you look after yourself - your diet, exercise, leisure and sleep patterns - to changing the way you think about yourself, your relationships and the farm. Talk about it. Talk to a trusted friend, family member or neighbour. Make an appointment to see your GP. Expressing what you are going through can be very therapeutic, even if there is nothing you can do to alter the stressful situation. Manage your time better. Poor time management can cause a lot of stress. When you are stretched too thin and running behind, it’s hard to stay calm and focused. But if you plan ahead and make sure you do not overextend yourself, you can reduce the amount of stress you are under. Set realistic goals. Be selective and use your energy to do the most important and achievable tasks. Set realistic goals and do not blame yourself if you do not reach all of them, there is always next time. Focus on the positive. When stress is getting you down, take a moment to reflect on all the things you appreciate in your life, including your own positive qualities. This simple strategy can help you keep things in perspective. Eat well. Eat a variety of fresh foods in a balanced diet. Some foods actually cause increased tension, for example, coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol and soft drinks. These are often the foods we crave when we are stressed so be aware and try to limit your intake of them Exercise regularly. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Make time for exercise and find something you enjoy: sport, swimming, walking, dancing or cycling. Make time for relaxation. Even stopping for ten minutes a day to breathe slowly and deeply can help. Spend time on your own - reading, walking, or listening to music. Finally, it is essential that everyone takes time out, and puts a bit of fun into their life. There are some excellent places to start looking on line for help with your mental health if you feel that you want to improve it and make it more stronger or if you don’t feel happy and can’t understand why and you want to stop feeling like that check out the following websites to make a start There are also some great organisations out there like GROW and AWARE were you can attend meetings on a weekly basis and they are all free of charge. if you feel really bad then you should contact the Samaritans as they are always there to listen and help. Telephone 116123. GLAS Inspections Farmers are reminded that GLAS Field Inspections are on-going, and that everyone is liable to be inspected. In theory 5% of all participants will be inspected each year, for the duration of the scheme. As the Scheme begun in 2015 and it is envisaged that it will end in 2021, there is a potential for 30% of participants to be inspected this way. In addition, there is a provision to carry out an additional 5% of those not inspected can be selected for a spot inspection. That’s a lot of inspections. The question, in the word of the Great Clint Eastwood is, “Do you feel lucky, well do ya, punk”. Don’t take the chance that you will escape the inspection process. Over one in

10 West Kerry Live

three GLAS farmers will get a visit, and if the work is not done, at this time, they will face fines and penalties, which will inpact negatively on their direct income. Traditional Hay Meadow & Low Input Permanent Pasture. These are two of the man options selected by GLAS applicants, even those who have some commonage and/or Chough Habitat Farmland. There is some confusion relating to these and what is required to fulfil the obligations of both. The maximum amount of chemical fertilizer nitrogen allowable under both options is 40 kg (N) per hectare (16 kg N per ac). Supplementary feeding is allowable in both situations, but poaching must not occur, and the feeders should be rotated around the plot regularly, to prevent this. THM requires farmers to have closed these plots by 15th April (and hopefully this has been done) and not to cut it before 1st July, and it must not be topped prior to cutting. The plot must not contain more than 50% ryegrass. Rushes, noxious weeds and other invasive species must be controlled either by weed lick, spot spraying or mechanically. Topping can be used as a control measure once cut. With LIPP, it requires the plot to be grazed by livestock, but not continuously, as it would need rest, like all types of pasture. Lime may be applied, as per soil sample recommendations, but this is not compulsory. Chough Inspections Another GLAS option that has recently come to the fore is this Chough Habitat Option. Supported and sponsored by the NPWS, this type of habitat occurs on the Dingle Peninsula, mainly along the coastline, ranging in land for up to 500 m. These are nothing to be afraid of. Simply, the NPWS have contract professionals to assess Chough Habitat land to see the extent of chough and check if they are actually there. In 99% of the situations, they will be seen, if not on your land, on neighbouring land. Once this is evident, there is no worry. On leaving, this inspector may ask you to fill out a survey/ questionnaire. It’s long but simple and wont take more that 10 minutes, which will be well spent. Farmers Urged To Prioritise Farm Safety A fresh appeal has been issued to farmers and contractors alike to prioritise farm safety as the current warm weather sees a large amount of farm activity taking place throughout the country. Farmers are being asked to be safety conscious when making silage to avoid accidents. Working with high-powered machinery and fatigue due to long hours are factors that increase the chances of accidents occurring. Experience has shown that taking a number of safety measures around key areas will make silage time safer. With the school holidays now in full swing and primary schools due to close soon, now is a good time to check that your farm is safe and that every precaution has been taken. Already this year, there have been 12 fatalities on Irish farms making this one of the worst years for farm fatalities, particularly for older farmers. The Minister highlighted some of the key safety messages, including child safety and operating machinery safely, to be observed during this busy period. Safety for children on farms • Contractors must not allow children to ride in tractor cabs. • Children should not be allowed to play around the farmyard or fields when silage is being made. Operating machinery safely • All tractors and other equipment need to be properly maintained and in good condition. Breakdowns, due to poor maintenance, can lead to delays, adding extra cost and more pressure to an already busy schedule. • Only competent drivers should be allowed to operate machinery during the silage season and the carrying of passengers should be avoided. All guards must be in place on all equipment – in particular PTO shafts – must be properly guarded. • Never clear blockages by hand until the drive has been switched off and sufficient time has been allowed for the machine to stop completely. • Remove keys from tractors during maintenance operations. • Take care when driving on the public road and watch out for other road users especially when entering or leaving fields or yards. • Keep all lights and indicators in working order.

Something to Chew On! Irene Ní Fhlannúra We live in a fast world where things are deemed better if they go faster. Fast food, fast eating and fast chewing has sped down the superhighway of modern living so fast that the average time we spend eating our main meal is 11 minutes - breakfast and lunch are averaging at a mindboggling speediness of 2 minutes per meal. Not only is this a choking hazard, eating too fast increases digestive troubles and greatly impacts on our health and well-being. The old saying “you are what you eat” should ideally be replaced with “you are what you absorb” - not as catchy but much more accurate! Chewing food is the first step to breaking down food in preparation for its digestion and complete assimilation as useful nutrients your body needs. The mouth is prepped for chewing well before the first forkful. The thought of food - its aroma, colour and texture stimulates the production of saliva and digestive enzymes. Preparing and cooking food prolongs this process - another plus for home -cooking! The saliva we produce is much more than drool as it contains powerful anti-bacterial agents to help prevent food borne illnesses, it contains anti-fungal and anti-viral chemicals too as well as providing a liquid base to ease swallowing. Chewing not only helps digestion it also supports the immune system. Digestive enzymes in the mouth, such as amylase, help break down carbohydrates - grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. The more you chew your food the more saliva and digestive enzymes will be produced making it easier for you to fully digest and benefit from these foods. Poorly digested food can remain in your stomach or large intestine for longer periods rotting away before it eventually passes. This can be felt as bloating, gas, indigestion and heartburn. The digestion of proteins such as meat and fish begins in the stomach where powerful enzymes and stomach acid fizzle it down to tiny pieces. When you gulp down large pieces of these proteins, without chewing properly - the stomach has to produce a larger volume of acidic juices in an attempt to break it down. Chewing meat until it is liquid not only helps the stomach but also increases the surface area of the meat exposed to these juices aiding its efficient digestion. Incomplete digested foods also provide a putrefying feast for unfriendly bacteria and other micro-organisms living inside the digestive tract. Feeding these critters encourages an overgrowth of unwelcome residents and increases the risk of inflammatory digestive disorders - Crohns disease, colitis, diverticular disease and cancer. Most factory-made foods are designed to taste great for the first few bites. After that, it becomes uninteresting and bland, you swallow and want a fresh bite. It is almost impossible to continue chewing junk food as it loses flavour quickly and becomes quite disgusting (try it!). Natural, real foods, on the other hand, remain interesting and tasty all the way through the chewing process. Some natural foods such as wholegrains and vegetables become sweeter when chewed sufficiently, as the carbohydrate breaks down sugars such as glucose, which the body needs. Natural food is created to be chewed in order to enjoy the taste experience of the food as well as to benefit from the nutrients within the food.

ity. Chewing is relaxing and reduces stress levels - a stark contrast to modern day dining on the run. Being grateful for your food, whether in prayer or in thought will help slow the mind and raise your consciousness of mindful eating. Mincing words and mincing food are two separate activities – keep them that way! Don’t speak with food in your mouth, you’ll end up swallowing more air. Finally, if you bite off more than you can chew - don’t panic - just chew, chew and chew! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Goat St, Dingle 066 9151360. To perfect the art of chewing - set aside time to eat in a relaxed setting. Eating without distractions such as mobile phones, TV and computer screens will help to be more mindful of chewing. Once food is in the mouth, close it! Much of the burping that occurs after meals is swallowed air making its way out again – not a complement to the chef as we are often told! Chew each mouthful 30-50 times until it is liquefied. Not only will this prepare food for digestion, it also prevents over eating as your brain registers being full before you stuff yourself to capacNatural Health Treatments

Tales From The Gáirdín Bríd Buckland (nee O’Shea) - My favourite Poem THE GOOD OLD DAYS We met and we married a long time ago, we worked for long hours - wages were low, No TV no wireless, no bath; times were hard Just a cold water tap and a loo in the yard. No holidays abroad, no carpets on the floor,

Milkmen and paperboy would whistle and sing, a night at the pictures was our one mad fling. We all got our share of trouble and strife, we all had to face it - that’s the pattern of life. Now I’m alone, I look back through the years, I don’t think of bad times, trouble and tears; I remember the blessings, our home and our love. That we shared together, I thank God above. - by Lily Hewitt

we burned coal on the fire, no locks on the door. Our children arrived (no pill in those days!), and we brought them up without State aid, They were safe going out to play in the park, and old folk could go for a walk in the dark. No Valium, no drugs, no LSD. We cured our ills with a good cup of tea, No vandals, no muggings - there was nothing to rob;

One for the Barbeque:Hot and Spicy Spatch-Cock Chicken Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School With the recent spell of good weather, I hope that everyone has dusted off the barbeque and enjoyed the novelty of cooking outdoors. If you sometimes feel that you are stuck when it comes to barbeque ideas, you will love this one and it is impressive when served with some side salads. It sounds very complicated but you will see from the recipe that it is very easy to manage. When using a barbeque try to cook on a medium heat or lower if you can. It takes more time but your food will not be burnt and will be juicy and full of flavour. Pay attention to food safety too, to do this keep things refrigerated until needed and always make sure you cook the chicken to 75ºC and serve once it has rested.

To prepare the rub, simply mix all the ingredients together and keep in an airtight jar until needed. This mixture can be added to any meat.

Method For the chicken Turn the chicken upside down and use a large scissors and cut the chicken down one side of the backbone, through the ribs. Make an identical cut on the opposite side to remove the backbone completely. Place the chicken cutside down and flatten with the heel of your hand. Loosen the skin from the meat and rub the dry rub mixture under the skin onto the breast meat and leg meat. Rub a little over the skin too. Leave to stand at room temperature for at least 10 minutes and up to 30 minutes.

To bbq the chicken Preheat the grill to a medium heat. Oil the rack put the chicken skin side down. Close the lid on the bbq and allow this to cook for about 25 minutes (check the chicken so it not burning, if it is move it slightly from the heat). At this stage turn the chicken over and cook for a further 10 minutes. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the chicken at the thickest part of the breast. If it registers 75ºC take it off the direct heat and allow it to rest, on a shelf or a warm place, for about 10 minutes before carving. Serve this with some nice potato salad and some nice greens. Enjoy!!!

If you want to learn more about barbequing we have a hands-on barbeque master class at the cookery school on August 5th. After this we promise that you will be able to take your barbequing to a new level.

Ingredients 1 whole chicken For the rub 2 tbsp. chilli powder 4 tsp. dark brown sugar 1 tbsp. ground cumin 1 tbsp. ground fennel ¼ tsp. ground ginger ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper 1½ tsp. salt ¾ tsp. smoked paprika West Kerry Live 17

Ekua who has Down Syndrome, Amida who has Cerebral Palsy and Janet who has a mental disability. My time at the Padre Pio Rehabilitation Centre (PPRC) Cape Coast, Ghana has almost come to a close with under two weeks left before I return home. We have recently carried out some projects at the St. Elizabeth’s Special Needs day care centre using some of the money in which the people of Kerry so kindly donated to me before I came to Ghana early in the New Year. So far, myself and the other volunteers have repainted some of the classrooms and painted decorations and pictures on the walls, with the help of some local painters, artists and friends. We also purchased and planted 150 mango trees as part of a self-sustaining project at the centre. The idea of this project is that when the trees grow and produce mangos the centre will sell them and money made will go back into maintaining the centre. The last and final project is the construction of a water reserve for St. Elizabeth’s Day Care Centre. As we use so much water in one day between bathing, changing and feeding the children as well as cleaning the classrooms the director at the centre, Dr. Mark Mantey, felt this would be a massive contribution to the special needs day care, so that when there are water shortages that the centre will not be affected as there will be a reserve to provide water for an extra 3-4 days. We have decided to use the money to buy the water tank which costs on average €450-500. All these projects will make a huge difference at the PPRC and it’s thanks to our friends and family in Kerry and the University of Limerick that these changes and developments are possible. I am sincerely grateful for everyone’s generosity and support before and during this wonderful and humbling experience. The community of West Kerry in general is an incredible one and I am very proud to be a part of it. Thank you.

the conference. In essence, the work of Moriarty captures the essence of ‘Spirit’ as outlined in the conference title and members of this panel attended from different parts of Ireland, the United States and Canada.

The conference provided a multi-disciplinary forum for both scholars and practitioners with a primary interest on the coastal environment to come together. Enhancing an understanding of the coastline as a shared national treasure and to offer ideas on how to sustain the coasts

The program for Wednesday afternoon allowed people to get to know the Dingle peninsula better by selecting one of three field trips, either based on a marine, geology or archeology experience. Whilst the weather attempted to somewhat disrupt these field trips, everyone

His talk was entitled, ‘Coastal barrier system changes in Ireland under climate warming and their significance for coastal people and future land uses’, a very engaging overview of rising sea levels and the potential consequences for parts of the Dingle Peninsula. Afterwards participants enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Centre with beautiful music played by harpist Deirdre Granville, uileann piper Brendan McCreanor, and guitarist / singer George Mercer. The sessions on Wednesday morning included Coastal Geomorphology, Education, Health & Wellbeing, and the Philosophy of John Moriarty and the Environment. This last session had a special appeal as John Moriarty is a native of County Kerry and his work is so relevant to the work of 24 West Kerry Live

Dheineadar tochailt anseo, ins na 1970í, agus tá roinnt mhaith le feiscint ann. Is clós ciorcalach é an suíomh; laistigh den chlaí bhí an príomhreilig, séipéilín, scrín lice, gallán, clocháin, tigh cearnógach, ceallúnach ó thréimhse níos déanaí, agus oigheann chun arbhar a thriomú díreach lasmuigh den chlaí. Fuaireadh roinnt cloch eile le crosanna greanta orthu, cé ná raibh aon cheann acu fós ina bhunáit féin, cuid acu anois i Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne. This early medieval monastic site was excavated during the 1970s, so is an excellent place to visit to understand the geography of these sites, of which there are many in Corca Dhuibhne. The monastery, surrounded by an enclosure wall, contains the remains of a church, some round houses, a workshop (with evidence for iron working, and possibly bronze and glass working both there and elsewhere on the site), graveyards of 2 periods (one early medieval, the other a cillín of more recent date), a possible shrine and several cross-inscribed stones as well as a rectangular house which is probably of later medieval date. There is also a corn-drying kiln just outside the enclosure wall. The site was occupied probably as early as the 6th century, but it is not sure when it was finally abandoned. Only one of the cross-inscribed stones, the large pillar stone on you left as you enter the site, is in its original position, and has been dated to the 2nd half of the 6th century. As well as the elaborate cross design, there is also a short inscription carved along the left side of the stone as you face it, ‘DNE’. This is a contraction of the Latin word Domine, meaning ‘Lord’. A similar inscription can be seen on a low stone behind and to the right of this one, and it is also found on the Alphabet Stone at Cill Mhaoilchéadair. Unlike some other of the sites of this period in the area, there is neither an ogham stone nor a holy well associated with An Riasc (Gallarus is another monastic site which does not have these features). A visit to Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne will complement a trip to An Riasc, as here you will see some more cross-inscribed stones from the site, as well as a variety of other artefacts found during the excavation. The Geological Heritage of West Kerry Pedler's Lake: first evidence of the Ice Age in Ireland

Patrick Wyse Jackson In 1837 the Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz visited Scotland and declared for the first time that ice formerly covered much of Northern Europe even though there was none to be seen during his visit. The scientific world and general public were astounded! Agassiz was talking from experience - he had studied modern Alpine glaciers in his homeland and had seen what ice could do to the landscape. The first evidence in Ireland for the Ice Age was discovered in 1848 at Pedler’s Lake by John Ball (1818-89) a Dublin-born civil servant and Alpine mountaineer.

ier it began to move downslope under gravity. This had the effect of plucking away at the underlying sandstones, and deepened armchairshaped depressions called corries (or 'cwm' in Wales and 'cirques' in France) were produced. These are often filled with lakes or tarns. One such example is Pedler’s Lake and it is a popular stop for visitors travelling to Dingle over the Conor Pass. The short climb from the road to the lake provides a beautiful view - try to imagine the scene filled with ice. Not so long ago this corrie was packed with ice several hundred metres thick. At the front edge of the lake distinct striations were made in the underlying purple-coloured Old Red Sandstone by stones plucked up in the ice. From here a glacier moved down the mountain and northwards through the Owenmore Valley. Patrick Wyse Jackson is a frequent visitor to the Dingle Peninsula and teaches geology at Trinity College, Dublin.

Scientists now know that approximately 2 million years ago the Earth’s climate began to cool and ice caps formed at the poles. Thick ice sheets advanced southwards and covered northern Europe. This time period is called the Pleistocene and can be subdivided into seven alternating periods of warm and cold. In Ireland two cold glacial periods can be recognised: the Munsterian (200,000 to 132,000 years ago) and the more recent Midlandian (120,000 to 10,000 years ago). In the former ice caps and valley glaciers covered Kerry, where local ice met thick ice sheets moving from the north, while in the latter period, the Dingle Peninsula was not covered by ice sheets but small local glaciers cascaded from high ground. Today the evidence of this Pleistocene ice age can be seen as corries on mountain sides, sharp ridges called arêtes, striations on rock surfaces, deepened U-shaped river valleys, glacial spillways, and in glacial till and erratics deposited when the ice finally melted. Some of these features will be examined in the next two articles. On the Dingle Peninsula as the temperatures dropped snow collected mainly on the north-east sides of mountains where it was less likely to melt. Quickly it became compressed into ice, and as this became heav-

Annascaul Loop Walk Start/Finish: Annascaul Bridge

Siúlóid Lúibe Com Dubh, Abhainn an Scáil

Distance: c. 8.5km Map: No. 70, Discovery Series This is a fairly gentle walk along minor roads and lanes. It should take about an hour and a half, but allow more time if you wish to visit Annascaul Lake. A to B Start at Annascaul Bridge. You will see signs indicating “The Foot of the Hill Loop Walk” and “Sean Droichead Com Dubh Loop Walk”. Also notice the marker post with red arrow. There will be a number of these on the walk to indicate the correct route. Pass over the old bridge over the Annascaul River and along the Main Street of Annascaul Village. You will see the South Pole Inn, opened by Antarctic explorer Tom Crean. On the other side of the road, opposite the post office stands a statue of Crean in a small memorial park. The wide pavements of the village are the location of a lively horse fair twice a year. When you reach the end of the village take the first turn left.

B to C As you take this road you will be heading towards the glacial valley containing Annascaul Lake. The “coom” with its steep cliff walls is clearly visible. C to D As you pass through a farm be sure to follow the direction post that lead you straight on. At the crossroads turn right, again following the red marker post. D to E After crossing a bridge near some forestry plantations, you should be able to see a large ring fort in a field to your left. Eventually you will arrive at a junction with a triangle of grass. If you wish to make a short detour to Annascaul Lake, you should go straight ahead (it is well signposted). You will pass through a gate and reach a viewing area with car park. E to F Follow the red marker posts and turn left. After passing a few houses you will see the monument marking the birthplace of sculptor Jerome Connor (1874-1943). Connor, who worked in the USA and Dublin, has a number of public sculptures on both sides of the Atlantic. F to G Continue along this road until you reach a crossroads. Continue straight ahead, following the sign to Ballinacourty graveyard and Tom Crean’s grave. G to H Continue past farms and houses and over a bridge. Ballinacourty Graveyard is on your left. It is an ancient graveyard, which once housed a parish church and is now closed for burials. In the furthest corner from the gate you will find the box tomb where Tom Crean was interred in 1938. H to I and J On leaving the burial ground follow the red marker posts out of Ballinacourty village and onto the road back to Annascaul J to K and A The road takes you past the farmyards of Annagap. Eventually you will see a square, stone-built tower on your right. This was the water tower for the locomotives of the Tralee and Dingle Railway. The railway crossed the road at this point and nearby was Annascaul station. From here the road back to the village is still known as “Station Road”, although the railway closed in 1953. As you pass the large industrial building on your left (the Connor Crean Centre, named after Annascaul’s two most famous sons) look back and you will see the stone railway viaduct over the Annascaul River. Station Road now brings you back to your starting point at Annascaul Bridge

LEARN WATERSPORTS IN A SAFE & CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT WITH PROFESSIONAL & QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS 32 West Kerry Live

The Summer Supplement - Activities, Events & More of the pier.

Maharees Regatta Barry Heasman Maharees Regatta starts off the regatta season in Kerry every year, it is a regatta that involves the racing of Naomhรณgs, this craft was a traditional fishing boat in Kerry for centuries. It is built with a light skeleton of wood which is then canvassed over and tarred. Originally the Naomhรณgs would have been covered in animal skin or hide. The construction of these boats is unique to the West of Ireland. The Naomhรณg is a 4 seater boat unlike the Currach (3 seater) which is predominantly used in Galway. The Regatta in Maharees has been ongoing continuously since 1970 (revived by our late chairman Corty Herbst) however it had been ongoing for decades before that. There are a total of 10 races on the day with 5 of those dedicated to our juniors. There will be as many as 150 oarsmen and oarswomen involved on the day, all watched over by a safety crew following each race in motorboats. The course for the races generally involve a triangular pattern which the Naomhรณgs race around and finish passing the head

Spectator numbers reach into the thousands with people coming and going all day to witness the spectacular racing involved by these unique sportspeople. Young children are duly entertained on the free bouncy castle supplied. The views of the Maharee islands in the background can be enjoyed whilst taking in the great racing on the day. There is a beautiful green field up above the pier which is a fabulous vantage point to relax and perhaps have a picnic. Naomhรณg racing is a sport that requires a great deal of fitness and plenty of hard training. The endurance involved to race at full speed for over 15 mins per race is something than only few people can achieve. An ongoing commentary on the day will keep everyone up to speed as to how each race is developing. Races are at approximately 30 minute intervals so it is an action packed day. Prize giving and BBQ will be held at The Greenroom Bar immediately afterwards. Without the hard work of our Committee and kind sponsorship for all of our generous this tradition would be unable to continue. See you at the Pier on the 25th of June.

Think Before You Flush in Dingle. Think Before You Flush is a public awareness campaign operated by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme and is supported by Irish Water. The campaign was born out of a need to keep marine litter from being flushed down our toilets, flowing through the sewage systems, swimming through the sea and ending up on our beaches as marine litter. Clean Coasts commissioned a survey of the nation’s flushing behaviour and found out that 3 in 10 Irish adults have flushed items other than toilet paper down the toilet. The two biggest culprits our clean coast groups find on the beaches are cotton buds and baby wipes. Our survey found that 43% of people thought these items were removed in the waste water treatment plant, unfortunately they are not. This year Think Before You Flush is running programmes in 9 communities around the country, of which Dingle is one. There have been Think Before You Flush workshops in all the Dingle town schools running fun and informative experiments for local children. Dingle Tidy Towns & Mara Beo Dingle Aquarium are also promoting this initiative so look out for information stands over the next couple of weeks! We want to get as many businesses involved in the town, especially those involved in tourism... to lessen the burden on our loos and environment! If you would like a Think before You Flush information pack with infographic posters and tent cards for guest houses/ B&Bs / businesses etc. they will be available to collect from the West Kerry Live office on Goat Street and from Mara Beo Dingle Aquarium. If you want a pack or to learn more please contact Susan on 087 116 1364

Scéal eile le Leabharlann Chiarraí With the Summer Holidays just around the corner, many parents worry that their children won’t open a book again until September. Here are a few tips to help encourage your child to read during the summer holidays and beyond. • Read to your child. Start reading to your child from a young age. Make time to read to your child every day; whether it’s stories before bedtime, or a few minutes curled up on the couch in the middle of the day. Reading to your child will help them develop reading and oral skills, foster their interest in reading, and motivate them to learn to read by themselves. • Provide your child with reading material. Have a variety of reading material around the house such as books, magazines and comics. A range of options means it’s more likely something will grab their attention.

• Don’t worry that your child is reading the same thing over and over. Sometimes parents get frustrated that their child wants to read the same book over and over again. The popular Summer Stars Reading Adventure is back in public libraries throughout the country this summer. Check out Binky and Zoink at your local library and join in the fun during Summer 2017! Summer Stars is a free programme, open to all children. Each child who registers for the programme at their local library joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the summer. Children will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress and the Summer Stars Reward Stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read. Fun rewards will be provided along the way.

Kerry Football star Paul Geaney presented Bunscoil an Clochar in Dingle with their fifth Green Schools Flag on Tuesday last. The flag was in recognition of the school’s awareness of biodiversity and the steps which can be taken to increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats, and to increase species-richness in a locality.

The Annascaul Trains Are Back Bert McCann It is sixty-four years since Annascaul was a stop on the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway. The water tower still exists ar Anagap but there is little trace of the permanent way otherwise. However thanks to the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group, railway trains are on display in the village once again. Resplendent in the colours of the GAA team, 'The Blue Army', wooden planters built by Tommy Griffin after the syle of the old steam workhorses now grace each end of the Main Street and are filled with fresh blooms, just in time for the arrival of summer visitors. ATTAG is also still working on refurbishing the front of Dan Foley's pub. Volunteer painters, guided by John Fahy have, over the last few weeks begun to restore the frontage to the bright focal point of the centre of the village that it once was. Similarly the owner of the next-door building has generously agreed to pay for the paint and labour costs of refreshing that front aspect.

HANDMADE IN DINGLE

ATTAG's elected committe members are often around the village tending the numerous plants and planters laid out by the group's volunteers. If you have constructive questions or positive ideas do contact us through the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group official facebook page. Or call to Dan Foley's if you are passing in the evening and we're wielding the brushes. Unfortunately, we can't buy you a pint as the pub is closed, but you can always call to one or other of the splendid hostelries in the area, to slake your thirst, seeing as how you are out and about anyway.

Open for Breakfast & Lunch everyday Open for Dinner Wednesday - Sunday 6-9pm

Betsie Konink Last Sunday we had our open day. A beautiful sunny day which was well supported. First of all a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers that helped out on the day and helped to make it such a success. The magicians and musicians and all of you who donated vintage clothing, Bric a Brac and second hand books and who came with cakes and sandwiches. We managed to raise €2,625 which will go towards some outdoor games and furniture for Tearman, our new house. Also still a special Thank You to all the people who supported the Bingo in Feoghanagh, which made €1130 for the community. Now it’s back to ordinary life, the farmers are making hay and silage, the first tomatoes are ripening and when the weather stays so beautiful we will have our first gooseberries next week. But there is also time for the beach and for nice walks.

Why Play Ball At All? Colin Sheeran There is a concerted wondering afoot. It wonders has the dedication and devotion of the current intercounty player gone too far? Is the wheel out of kilter? Are the sacrifices worth it? The consensus has it that our players fall into two broad categories; the successful and the unsuccessful. The analysis has it that both groups are doomed, for different reasons but doomed none the less. Let’s start with the weaker counties; the unsuccessful and low profile. No-one can establish why they turn up at all when Kilkenny and Dublin are going to win everything, for all time, anyway. By the narrow definitions these players are assuredly going to get nothing; no glory, no fame, no money, no guts, no black pudding. Not even a bit of scandal. The time is coming when the unsuccessful will notice that they are the weaker counties and they will notice that they have not seen EastEnders in three years and they do not live on an endless carousel of stag parties. Then they will notice they are not in Croke Park and they will give up. When they’re not going to win the whole thing, why would they play? The preparation is too much, too extreme?

Penrose are a solid Indie Pop band with catchy uplifting inide songs and anthems that have “attitude” and stick in your head.

This worry for the weaker counties makes no sense to me. Here is the news, the Irish are a nation of extremists. Whatever we do, we do it to the far end. If these guys weren’t playing GAA, they’d be at the extreme end of something else instead. And they are not alone. They may be low profile but those of us who are no profile are at the exact same carry on. If you think the Waterford footballers or the Antrim hurlers are a Greek tragedy what of your local Junior C side? They train too. Week in, week out, turning up, togging out. Have they not noticed they aren’t Aidan O Shea? I look around my local area and it is littered with people taking sports to that end point. These folks are less athletically endowed than our GAA stars but it makes no difference. Tri-Athlon is the fastest growing sport in Ireland. The training demands are hefty. The equipment is expensive. The endeavour is time consuming. People aren’t taking it up for podium finishes or sponsorship deals yet no-one questions why they do it. There is not an endless reporting cycle on the futility of their endeavours. Your average club golfer, how many trophies a year does he win? I’d say it averages at a round number; zero. Is he going to give it all up next week if he doesn’t finally win? Marathon running, cycling, fishing or swimming people are out there and doing it and having protein shakes for breakfast. In reality, the definition of winning is much wider than people imagine as the breadth of the victory is calibrated and adjudicated from within and not from without. Everyone at all codes and all levels is taking things as far as they can. At the edges of your ability there lies entertainment and discovery and satisfaction. That my edges are not beside your edges matters not a whit. The truth is we are all much more interested in ourselves than in our externals. My victories, my losses are the epics in my head. So my efforts easily rank on par with Conor McGregor or Johnny Sexton or Austin Gleeson. And with Stephen Prendergast and Neil Mc Manus. When I’m buying the tickets I know who I want to see back in action next week; myself. That’s what drives these inter-county lads on and they don’t care what anyone else is up to. No-one is giving up.

Prop. Gavin O’Grady

Question I’ve been on Illness Benefit for over a year. I don’t ever expect to be fit to return to work. As I’m now nearing pension age, will I be entitled to a full State Pension (Contributory)? Answer The State Pension (Contributory) is paid to people from the age of 66 who have enough social insurance contributions. To qualify, you will need to have paid 520 full-rate contributions, which is equivalent to 10 years. Illness Benefit is paid for a maximum of two years. It will end before that if you turn 66, when you may be eligible for a State Pension. You should apply for the State Pension three months before your 66th birthday. If your entitlement to Illness Benefit ends before you reach pension age at 66 and you are likely to be permanently incapable of work, you may qualify for Invalidity Pension. To get Invalidity Pension you must have at least 260 (or five years) paid PRSI contributions and 48 contributions paid or credited in the last complete tax year before the date of your claim. The last complete tax year is the year before your claim. For example, if you claim Invalidity Pension in 2017, the last complete tax year is 2016. Note that only PRSI paid in classes A, E and H currently count. If you get Invalidity Pension, you will automatically transfer to the State Pension (Contributory) at the full rate when you turn 66. You will be contacted by the Department of Social Protection before your Illness Benefit is due to stop and you will be given information about your options. If at that stage, you don’t qualify for Invalidity Pension and have a disability that is expected to last for a year or more, you may qualify for a means-tested Disability Allowance. You can get detailed information about the State Pension and payments for people with long-term illnesses from the website of the Department of Social Protection. West Kerry Live 47

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor Come Walk With Jane Over 100 people walked with Jane in aid of the Kerry Kidney Association on Saturday last and what a heavenly day it was on Saturday with the sun splitting the stones. Jimmy O’Dwyer thanked everybody who took part on the day and all those who made donations and contributed in any way and those who sponsored food. In particular he acknowledged Jane Fitzgerald’s great work in promoting the event along with Aisling O Driscoll and the cooks on the day Robbie and Chriss who laboured over a hot barbeque and served up delicious burgers and sausages to all of us. Jimmy, emphasising the wonderful and precious Gift of Life encouraged people to carry a donor card. A special thanks was also extended to Pat Moore in charge of finance on the day and Christy Deane, our music man at the Junction and Bernadette and Mike Fitzgerald, The Junction Bar for providing their restaurant facilities on the day and Mary’s scones and jam was a lovely dessert. Jimmy O Dwyer presented bouquets of flowers to Jane, Aisling, Breda and to Norah Crean whose daughter Mairead couldn’t make the event, but nonetheless has given huge support from London. And about the walk itself travelling through high terrain over Days and O Dwyers mountain and down to Johnny Kennedys and Maum na h-altora, it was truly spectacular and then taking in the Dingle Way across the stepping stones and up Knockgloss and down to the Junction, a real magical fairyland ! Eccentric Training The Best Bodybuilding Workout Ever

Eddie O’Grady

When I was younger I used to concentrate on how much weight I could lift. I reached some decent levels with a 300kg squat, 180kg bench press and 320kg deadlift at a pretty young age. As I have grown older (and wiser), my goals have changed and I am more concerned with health, longevity, minimizing injury risk, holding a decent level of strength and muscle mass while keeping in shape. I have as a result totally changed my training. I still go close to failure but at a much higher rep range, no singles. I train less, warm up more and make sure to incorporate stretching and mobilization exercises especially for my spine. The biggest change I have made to my training in an attempt to keep the intensity but lower the risk of injury, is that I do exercises much slower, especially the eccentric part. This is where you lower the weight in free weights movements or on a pulley type machine where you release the weight. It is generally the easier part of the movement. The eccentric phase of a lift occurs when a muscle contracts while lengthening. This is the down motion of the bench press, biceps curl, or squat. The concentric phase of a lift occurs when a muscle contracts and shortens, as in the up motion of the bench press, biceps curl, or squat. Just to explain things even simpler. Concentric is where you are lifting the weight. For example say on a bench press concentric is where you are pushing up a weight off your chest, eccentric is where you are lowering the weight to your chest. It is a great pity I didn’t discover the benefits of eccentric weight training when I was younger, because it is such an effective, underutilised method of building muscle and strength. What I want you to think about first is why would you cheat on an exercise in the gym, concentric or eccentric....why swing or bounce through a range of motion where the muscle does not engage...Isn’t the idea of training to

stimulate the muscle. Do you really think doing a quarter rep with the leg press loaded up is working all your muscles. The only thing it is working is your ego. The idea is to build balance in your physique and this can only be done with full movements. Say you do a quarter squat, you are mainly just working vasti muscles (lower quad) to the detriment of hamstrings, glutes and upper quads etc. which all get worked in the full squat. Below is a set of upper body exercises that will work almost the entire upper body in a single session. I have keep the list to a minimum because this workout is meant to be minimalist while working the muscles maximally. If you do too many exercises, you will spoil the intensity and slow recovery. I want you to concentrate more on the muscles you are working in each exercise than the amount of weight lifted. The weight does not matter. If you want to make the exercise harder, do it slower. After warming up for each exercise I want you to take a weight, about 70 % of what you can do comfortably for ten reps. I want you to slow everything down especially the eccentric part(lowering part) of the exercise. I want you to perform the eccentric part of each exercise at least three times as slow as the concentric part. Movements in both directions should be slow, controlled and deliberate focusing and isolating the muscles you are working. Do each exercise for one set of as many slow reps as you can. If you have done things properly the muscles you are working should be pumped to the max. You will also begin to understand the effectiveness of this type of training.

spotter. 8. Narrow grip lat pulldown to front - as above letting the lats stretch out fully on top 9. Straight arm dumbell pullovers lying sideways across a bench..get a good deep stretch. Keep hips low. Remember our priority here is to stretch that ribcage for a big chest. 10. Reverse dumbell flies. Lie face down on a 30 % incline bench. These hit the rear deltoid as well as the middle and lower traps, rhomboids etc. There should be a maximum of 2 minutes rest between each set. This entire program should be done in about 30 minutes. If you have done it properly, every muscle in your upper body should be pumped to the max. This program is more for a novice to intermediate trainer. More seasoned trainers could add a few extra exercises. I cannot over-emphasize that you must slow down and control the weight movement especially during the eccentric phase of each exercise, and focus on working the muscles to the maximum. This is paramount to the success of this program. The strength will always be there and most likely you will have more when you return to looser form. Bottom line: Eccentric exercise puts muscles under tension for longer, stimulating more muscle growth.

Each exercise below is done after warmup and all exercises are done to failure (probably 15 to 20 reps). I keep the rep range higher because it is easier to maintain strict control during each rep as you tire. 1. Flat bench press with a 2 second pause on the chest at each rep. 2. Straight barbell curls(no swinging at any stage). 3. Flat dumbell bench press - go deep. 4. Barbell rows (low and slow - pull to below belly button/ touch lower stomach with bar and let the bar down fully - remember you are trying to work your lats and back, not the biceps as such). 5. Incline dumbell bench press - again go deep. 6. Wide lat pulldown to front - stay up as straight as you can and flare out lats keeping Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at Ré Nua Clinic elbows and shoulders back. 7. Press behind neck (right down to base of neck) - use a smith machine if you have no

Castlegregory Host successful Gaelic4Girls Programme

erees, Castlegregory Senior board and Bord na nÓg, primary schools, parents/guardians, club members and pitch organisers and the girls themselves. The girls were individually presented with their t-shirts and certificates by our special guest Éamonn Fitzmaurice.

We had a BALL

All girls were encouraged to join Castlegregory LGFA . The girls who registered participated in the Munster Blitz in Mallow on the 17th June.

The Gaelic4Girls programme in Castlegregory has been a tremendous success, with 44 girls taking part over 8 weeks. This LGFA national programme was held in association with Castlegregory LGFA. The programme targeted girls between the ages of 8-12yrs and introduced them to the sport in a fun environment. The girls were taught the basic skills of Ladies Gaelic football and then were given the opportunity to demonstrate their new skills at a blitz which was held in Castlegregory GAA pitch on Thursday May 18, 2017. Clubs from Dingle, Blennerville, Corca Dhuibhne and Annascaul participated in the blitz. The Gaelic4Girls programme concluded on 22nd May in the clubrooms with the presentation of t-shirts and certificates to all participants. The clubhouse was full to capacity. The coordinator of the programme, Mary Lyne, acknowledged the effort put in by all involved to ensure the programme was a success. She complimented the coaches for all their work over the past number of weeks and thanked all who supported and helped on the evening of the blitz: the clubs who participated, ref-

Finally, a Ready Steady Coach programme will be held over the next few weeks in Castlegregory. Ready Steady Coach is a programme aimed at providing support and assistance to new volunteers interested in HELPING with coaching or running a team within a club. It is a 2 ½ hour course. Existing club coaches will be present and they will act as buddies. It will be run by the LGFA and delivered by a qualified tutor. The programme, which is specifically designed to be volunteerfriendly, encourages parents to become involved with their local club and develops their confidence to assist with the club. If you are able to attend or would like further information, please contact Mary at sec.castlegregorylgfa@gmail.com

Dingle Notes Richie Williams Community Gathering. Arising from the discussion at the recent meeting re safety concerns at Milltown Bridge the Tidy Towns Group are organising a Community Gathering at the Bridge on this Friday evening June 23rd commencing at 8p.m. They have invited a number of people to give short talks on the following topics . Wildlife Activity in and around the Milltown area, the History of the Bridge particularly the storm damage over 70 years ago and the geography and tales from the people who inhabited the surrounding areas in years gone by. The Gathering will then be open to all participants to contribute to the discussion which is hoped will give all concerned a better idea of the rich heritage which relates to the Milltown Bridge area. Should the weather not be suitable for an outdoor session the Gathering will be held in the clubrooms nearby. Failte roimh cach og is aosta. Dog Toilets. The 3 new DOG TOILETS brainchild of our long serving volunteer Gene Courtney have really hit the local and national headlines with no less than 5 different radio stations taking the story in the past week. They are located on a trial basis at The Bottle Bank at Greenmount and at Milltown Bridge all on the popular Sli Na Slainte dog walking route. We request all canine owners to familiarise their dogs with the toilets and the scent left is what attracts other dogs to stop and hopefully entice them to use the facility regularly. Owners are then expected to remove the poo with their doggy bag and as before dispose of same in the nearest public bin. The sign on each toilet reads LEITHREAS DO MADRAÍ AMHÁIN and another sign reads Dear Dog Please ensure your owner is attached by a lead and is trained to clean up after you-- Thanks Tidy Towns.

Shop Local. The Business Chamber are appealing for support for all our local outlets and services as it appears that trade is down a good bit on previous years at this point in time this year. We normally send out this Shop Local Appeal around the Christmas Period but a number of the longer established outlets have noticed quite a shift in the consumer spend and the support of our local community would help to secure continued employment for those in full-time and part time positions in our town. Yes folks its all about the survival of the fittest in today’s world but we can all contribute to the survival of our local business outlets and services so think local if at all possible. Parking. A recent survey undertaken over a 3 hour period from 9am to 12 midday on Main Street confirmed that the majority of vehicles are left parked in our main streets for long periods every day. The Business Chamber again appeal to all business owners and their employees to consider parking on the perimeter of town and walking the short distance to their respective locations which should help the chronic situation we find ourselves again this year. It would appear that the extra 60 parking spaces in the town centre promised by Kerry Council personnel will not now be available until summer 2018 at the earliest. Tractor Skills Course. A Safe Tractor Driving Skills Session for teenagers working with tractors will be held at Dingle Mart on Monday July 3rd. Phone Tara at NEWKD Dingle Office 0667142788 to book a place and all participants will receive a FRS Training Certificate. Events. Two recent events The Dun Laoghaire To Dingle Yacht Race and the Adventure Race went off without any apparent problems and attracted large numbers of participants and supporters to West Kerry. I was most impressed that all 260 participants in the Full Course cycle event over a misty Conor Pass wore high vis clothing and therefore could be easily identified while on the road. Just shows the experience and consideration these people have while using our public roads so lets all learn a lesson from their good example. Yes if you don't own one buy one soon and use it when walking, jogging, running or cycling in public areas. Clothes Collection. Dingle Bord Na nÓg would appreciate bags of unwanted clothing which are in reasonable condition for their collection on this Saturday June 24th with deliveries to the Sportsfield between 10a.m and 12 noon. This method is a good fundraiser for the club which caters for all players between the ages of 6 and 16 years. It is also an opportunity to make room in the wardrobe or drawers at home which can fill up pretty quickly with seasonal purchases in todays consumer driven world. Running. Good luck to Shane Finn who sets out to run 24 marathons in as many daysover the next few weeks collecting funds for Spina Bifida Ireland.

Congratulations to Jamie Ó Loingsigh, Lispole, who was a winner in the Texaco Children's Art Competition for the second year in a row.He is pictured with his winning entry at the prize giving ceremony held recently in Dublin. West Kerry Live 57
