Dingle Historical Society presents

The Voice of Parnellism in the Kingdom: The Harringtons and the Kerry Sentinel Newspaper An illustrated lecture by Patrick Fitzgerald Lecture venue: Dingle Skellig Hotel. Date: Tuesday, 29th August, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome Between 1878 and 1918, the Kerry Sentinel newspaper was the organ of the Irish Parliamentary Party in Kerry. Founded by Timothy and Edward Harrington, the Kerry Sentinel epitomised the union of politics and the press at a local level in late 19th century Ireland. Both brothers served in Westminster—Timothy as Secretary of the Irish National League and Edward as MP for West Kerry. This talk will trace the rise and fall of the Kerry Sentinel, and examine the controversies associated with this local newspaper, particularly its brushes with the law and the British establishment during the Land War. Patrick Fitzgerald is a local historian and is a graduate of UCD and Cambridge. He addressed the Dingle Historical Society last year on the trial of Roger Casement. He works as a researcher to the Supreme Court of Ireland.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 22nd August will be the Swedish dark comedy “A Man Called Ove”.

Ove is the quintessential angry old man next door. An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, who spends his days enforcing block association rules that only he cares about, and visiting his wife’s grave, Ove has given up on life. Enter a boisterous young family next door who accidentally flattens Ove’s mailbox while moving in and earning his special brand of ire. Yet from this inauspicious beginning an unlikely friendship forms and we come to understand Ove’s past happiness and heartbreaks. What emerges is a heartwarming tale of unreliable first impressions and the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it’s shared. The following week on Tuesday 29th August the feature will be “Maudie”. Based on a true story, the film is an unlikely romance in which the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper. Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love. MAUDIE charts Everett’s efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie’s deep and abiding love for this difficult man and her surprising rise to fame as a folk painter. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Food Festival 2017 Friday 29th September – Sunday 1st October

C

M

The Dingle Food Festival costs over €35,000 a year to run & your financial contribution is much needed and appreciated as we could not run the festival without the support of the Dingle Peninsula Business Community. As a feature of the Dingle Food Festival our aim is to have free events such as the children's activities, street entertainment, cookery demonstrations. Many festivals around the country charge for events throughout the weekend. These events encourage as many people as possible to the town & allow people the opportunity to spend money with many businesses e.g. accomodation, bars, restaurants, shops, cafes etc. We need your support to keep this going.

Y

If you would like to contribute please send in an envelope clearly marked 'Dingle Food Festival', C/O Dingle Hub, Cuilin Business Park, Cuilin, Dingle/Daingean Ui Chuis, as soon as you can to help with this year's festival. All contributions will be receipted and acknowledged.

Sponsorship Request The Dingle Food Festival is now in its 11th year and has grown in that time into one of Ireland’s top food festivals, bringing many thousands of people to Dingle for the 1st weekend in October each year. The Irish Times described it as the best food festival in Ireland. No mean feat for our small town when comparing it to such festivals as Dublin, Cork, Galway etc. The aim of the festival was to put Dingle on the map as a foodie destination. As you may agree the town is now firmly on the map as just that, indeed being awarded ‘FOODIE TOWN OF IRELAND’ in 2014 by the RAI. Dingle needs to build on this reputation & your support for the Food Festival & local food producers greatly assists in doing just that. We have been lucky enough to receive funding from larger businesses outside the town but this is getting harder & harder to maintain. 6 West Kerry Live

If anyone would like to volunteer to help with the festival, either in the build up to it or on the weekend please ring Kathleen Sheehy on 0879980554 or email ktbsheehy@gmail.com If your business has an event on over the festival period, Friday to Sunday, e.g. live music, art exhibition e.t.c. & you want it to be advertised as part of the festival please email details as you wish them to appear to ktbsheehy@gmail.com as soon as possible & we will aim to include it in brochure & website. Míle Buíochas for your continued support of the Dingle Food Festival. - Dingle Food Festival Committee

Farming News

N & P Statements To June 2017 Now Available The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to June 2017 are now available on the Department’s online system www.agfood.ie. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year. Farmers not already registered for agfood. ie can do so by logging onto www.agfood.ie and clicking the ‘Register’ button. To register a mobile phone number for future SMS text alerts log on to: www.agriculture.gov.ie/mobileupdates/ to access the sign-on form, or alternatively contact the regional office Beekeepers Swarm On Gormanston For Annual Beekeeper’s Summer School Close to 700 beekeepers and other interested parties were welcomed from Ireland and abroad to the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations 71st Annual Beekeeper’s Summer School, which recently took place in Gormanston Co. Meath. Opening the Summer School Minister Doyle TD at the Department of Agriculture praised FIBKA’s contribution to the development of beekeepers’ skills and acknowledged the important role played by bees as both pollinators for agricultural and horticultural crops and the important role of bees in the maintenance of eco systems. Highlighting the National Pollinator plan the Minister Doyle stated that Good progress is being made on the actions set down for agriculture under the 2015-2020 All Ireland Pollinator Plan and that farming guidelines under the plan are currently being developed and will benefit all pollinators including honeybees. The Department of Agriculture is currently seeking Research Proposals across a number of areas. Two areas in particular of relevance to the Irish beekeeping community include proposals to mitigate the potential impacts of pesticide use on terrestrial ecosystems including pollinators. The other being to help establish the purity of Ireland’s native honeybee population as well as examining mating behaviour, adaptive evolution and the dynamics that support survival of feral Apis mellifera mellifera populations. The Department of Agriculture continues to provide a number of other supports for the beekeeping sector including co-funding research under the National Apiculture Programme, provision of grant aid to facilitate capital investments in specialised beekeeping related equipment, support for activities conducted by national beekeeping organisations and provision of a free bee disease diagnostic service. Details on the Department’s current competitive call for research proposals are available at: https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/research/ competitivenationalprogrammes/opencalls/ The Federation of Irish Beekeepers’ Associations (FIBKA) has in excess of 3,100 members. Last year the members over-wintered an estimated combined total of 21,390 honeybee colonies. Irish colony strength and honey production is very much influenced by the Irish weather. In addition to honey production bees play an important role in the pollination of food crops as well as plants in the wild. Ireland is considered to possibly have one of the purest remaining strains of the Dark European Honeybee, Apis mellifera mellifera. In the event of a research project being funded in this area it will hopefully establish the genetic composition of Ireland’s honeybee population as well as dynamics associated with survival of pure Apis mellifera mellifera bees. Weather Related Crop Loss Support Measure For Growers Announced Targeted crop loss support measure will soon be in place to assist farmers and growers most affected by the wet weather harvest conditions of September 2016. While many farmers experienced difficult challenges last year, this was particularly the case for a number of cereal farmers who experienced an exceptionally difficult harvest and resulting yield losses for certain spring crops. This is a very important sector to the agricultural economy, making a vital contribution to both the food and feedstuffs sector. A way has now been found to provide financial assistance for those most affected. This measure will provide a financial contribution towards the cost of spring cereals crop losses in excess of 30% by yield, experienced by growers. Application forms including details on eligibility for the Crop Loss Sup10 West Kerry Live

port Measure are be available on DAFM’s website at: www.agriculture. gov.ie/farmerschemespayments and from the Department’s local office network. Closing date for applications will be Friday 25th August. Additionally The Department recently announced the Tillage Investment Scheme under TAMS II which opened for online applications last March and remains open. The specific areas of investment include Minimum Disturbance Tillage Equipment, Sprayers, Rain Water Harvesting, Grain Storage and Grain dryers. Twenty Tips For Farm Safety Safety hazards shouldn’t deter your from you farm or from moving to one. However, thinking about safety and making it a part of everything you do on your farm is important. Make your farm a safer place, and you’ll be able to thrive on it. Here are 20 farm-safety tips for you to consider: Farm Buildings and Grounds •Perform a safety check of buildings and grounds for obvious fire hazards and hazardous materials. •Store farm chemicals securely where kids and animals can’t access them. Then make a list of the chemicals for firefighters in the event of a fire on your property. •Keep weeds and grasses trimmed so tractor and ATV drivers won’t run into hidden obstacles and holes that can cause the vehicle to overturn. •Maintain clean and neat work areas with tools stored out of the way. •Establish a safety boundary around gas and diesel fuel tanks and other flammable substances. Personal Farm Safety •Don’t wear loose clothing around equipment or work areas. •Use safety equipment the way it was intended. That means appropriate gloves, hearing protection and safety eyewear, not to mention face masks and respirators when working in dusty conditions. •Always have a helper nearby when entering grain bins, breeding pens or other high-risk areas. •Discuss safety concerns with children as you explain safe handling and operating procedures. Practice what you preach, and they will practice it, too. Tractors and Implements •Keep tractor roll-over protection structures in place. When Life Gives You Lemons… Just Say Thank You! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

their lips and lighten blemishes on the skin, making them very fine ladies indeed. Lemon juice is still used today to diminish age spots, brighten hair pigment and apparently lighten freckles. Again, vitamin C plays its part in the manufacture of collagen which gives skin its suppleness and elasticity, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Today’s consumers, being more concerned about wrinkles than freckles, will often seek out beauty products with added collagen yet this is only one of many anti-aging attributes of vitamin C and lemons. Choosing lemons is not rocket-science but there are some things to consider. Firstly, the juicier lemons are thin-skinned with a fine, smooth texture. They are heavy for their size and should be bright yellow, fragrant and without blemishes. Most lemons are waxed for protection during transit, reduce moisture-loss and to improve appearance. Traditionally beeswax was used although nowadays most citrus fruits are waxed with a plastic, polyethylene or shellac. Although considered safe for consumption, it is best scrub lemons with a soft brush and hot water to remove as much wax as possible. Organic lemons are never waxed and preferable if using the zest. As the days of Summer wind down, a daily dose of lemon will keep us light, bright and sunny for the months ahead!

The lemon is one of the most universally known fruits across the globe. Originating in Asia, it was introduced to Europe via Spain by the Arabs in the 11th century and has been happily growing in the warm climes of Spain, Italy and Greece ever since. It has found its way to North and South America, Africa and throughout the Middle East. Unlike other fruits, the lemon has many roles, not just in the kitchen but in body care, healthcare, medicine and household care. There’s more to lemons than lemonade and with our European varieties at their peak right now, it’s a good time to put them to good use! The most notable nutrient of lemons in undoubtedly vitamin C. Lemons were much sought after by the sailors and miners of the 17th and 18th century to prevent scurvy. In 1747 naval surgeon, James Lind treated scurvy among English sailors with a dose of one to two ounces of lemon juice in water every four hours. When lemons reached a peak price following this discovery, they switched to limes, and were then referred to as “limeys”. To this day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor could have one ounce of juice a day. In tropical countries, lemon juice is commonly used as an antibacterial agent against malaria, diphtheria, cholera, typhoid and other deadly bacterial diseases. Vitamin C is a complex of flavonoids and phenols, all of which are antioxidants. These properties can neutralize free radicals that are responsible for aging and age-related disease, certain cancers, eye disorders and most degenerative diseases. Rutin can strengthen blood vessels, leading to better outcomes for haemorrhoids, haemorrages and varicose veins and can improve diabetic retinopathy and slow down its progression. New research is examining the role of tangeretin, a flavonoid found in lemon peel and its role in the treatment of brain disorders and Parkinson’s Disease. Asthma and allergic symptoms can also be improved with a higher vitamin C intake due to its anti-histamine properties. Apart from those with allergies to citrus fruits, many people can reduce the misery of hayfever, dust allergies and other inhalant-type allergies with the juice of a lemon in warm water everyday. Edmund Hillary (1919- 2008), the first man to reach the top of Mt. Everest attributed his success to lemons, claiming they aided his breathing and increased the availability of oxygen at high altitudes. He also gave credit to his Sherpa and unusually good weather conditions, but lemons were up there with him on the summit!

Vitamin C from lemons is widely used as an anti-viral agent against colds and influenza in all parts of the world. Our own hot toddy of whiskey, lemon, cloves and honey could be therapeutically enhanced with more lemon and less whiskey, which would shorten the duration of a viral infection and lessen the severity of symptoms. Many of the health benefits of lemons can be attributed to its vitamin C complex, lemon juice is also a digestive tonic. Its astringent properties stimulate the liver and gallbladder, helping to emulsify fats, dissolve uric acid and aid digestion of proteins. Lemon juice supports bowel function by increasing peristalsis of the bowel thus prompting bowel movements to eliminate waste and improve regularity. Its cleansing properties make it an ideal tonic first thing in the morning to get things moving. In skin care, lemons were rated as a must-have in many cultures throughout the ages. European ladies of the Renaissance used lemons to redden 12 West Kerry Live

Notched Gravestones In West Kerry Ted Creedon A visit to a cemetery or graveyard is always a sobering experience whether paying respects to a relation or friend or just browsing among the headstones and grave markers. The most basic form of grave marker is a simple stone placed in the ground and there are many of these to be seen in old graveyards around the peninsula. Some forty years ago the writer was wandering around the old graveyard at Kilmalkeader and became curious about the number of grave markers that have small notches cut into the top of the stones. Some notches are u-shaped while others are v-shaped. What do these notches mean and what are their origins? Visitors and locals will be familiar with the 12th century stone church at Kilmalkeader with its distinctive finial atop the western gable. We’re told that these finials represent an architectural tribute to the days when early churches were built of wood and the timbers overlapped at the apex of the gable giving the appearance of a type of cross. This overlapping was retained in a stylised design, called a finial, in later stone churches. So, could it be that there was a belief, in medieval times, that the finial was a decorative representation of the true Cross and is that the reason notches were carved on simple grave stones? On a visit to Kilmalkeader over thirty years ago the writer put this theory to an archaeologist who smiled indulgently and shook their head in negative response. In April of this year the writer aired the theory with Tralee-based archaeologist Laurence Dunne who has carried out multiple surveys of graveyards around the county. He said he had come to the same conclusion - that the origin of these notched stones is probably based on church finials. He believes that these stones are an important element of medieval archaeology and funerary practice that has, up to now, been overlooked by archaeologists.

Think Before You Flush in Dingle! Think Before You Flush is a public awareness campaign operated by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme and is supported by Irish Water. The campaign was born out of a need to keep marine litter from being flushed down our toilets, flowing through the sewage systems, swimming through the sea and ending up on our beaches as marine litter. Clean Coasts commissioned a survey of the nation’s flushing behaviour and found out that 3 in 10 Irish adults have flushed items other than toilet paper down the toilet. The two biggest culprits our clean coast groups find on the beaches are cotton buds and baby wipes. Our survey found that 43% of people thought these items were removed in the waste water treatment plant, unfortunately they are not. This year Think Before You Flush is running programmes in 9 communities around the country, of which Dingle is one. We want to get as many businesses involved in the town, especially those involved in tourism... to lessen the burden on our loos and environment! Many are participating – which is great! If you would like a Think before You Flush information pack with infographic posters and tent cards for guest houses/ B&Bs / businesses etc. they will be available to collect from the West Kerry Live office on Goat Street, from Mara Beo Dingle Aquarium and the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance office in The Wood. If you want a pack or to learn more please contact Susan on 087 116 1364. 14 West Kerry Live

Cod, Tomato and Swiss Chard Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is a dish I got to cook over the weekend; it is so tasty, easy to make and there is very little clean up afterwards. A dish as simple as this really depends on the freshness of all ingredients. The fish can be changed to whatever fish you find, but it must be fresh. Don’t be afraid to ask your fishmonger to point out the fish which is the freshest and not just on special offer. I would urge everyone to seek out some fresh tomatoes over the next few weeks when they are just coming into season. If you make the effort you will be rewarded, fresh tomatoes are full of flavour and will not compare to the tasteless tomatoes that we have become used to which are available all year round. Things taste much better when in season!

a further 2 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon. Take this off the heat until the fish is cooked. Depending on the thickness of the fish it should take somewhere between 6-10 minutes. To check the fish, pierce the centre of the fish with a small sharp knife. If you feel very little resistance and if the tip of the knife is warm when you touch it, you can then turn off the oven and let it rest for about 2-3 minutes. While the fish is resting, make sure that the chard is warm. Do not let it cook for too long as the greens will turn to a very dark green colour. Once you feel the fish is ready place some chard and some stalks in the centre of a plate. Lift the fish along with some tomato from the tray and place on top of the chard. Drizzle the fish with some extra virgin olive oil and some lemon juice. Sprinkle with some basil and serve. Enjoy!!

Sometimes, and rightly so, the term fast food brings very negative connotations but we forget that fish is the ultimate fast food. For the vegetables I have chosen chard; it can come in different colours, red, yellow or white. Chard has a large stalk and a beautiful green leaf. Any similar vegetable or green such as spinach, pok choi or fresh beetroot leaves can replace the chard in this dish. For the chard, it is best to remove the stalk and chop it. This will allow you to cook the stalk first to make sure that the leaf is not over cooked by the time the stalks are cooked. Ingredients

An chéad dráma ó pheann Róisín Sheehy ó Bhaile Eaglaise, Corca Dhuibhne, is ath-insint shamhailteach, fhileata é Snámh na Saoirse ar fhíorscéal tragóideach a tharla ar an mBlascaod Mór sa bhliain 1909. Baintear leas as saothar an ealaíontóra Tomás Ó Cíobháin, ceol nua-chumtha le Gerry O'Beirne agus córéagrafaíocht le Maria Svensson, Rinceoir Chónaitheach in An Lab. Is í Áine Moynihan an Stiúrthóir. Tá an léiriú seo tiomnaithe do Dhomhnal Mac Síthigh, athair Róisín, a d'éag ar an 9ú Mheithimh sa Phortingéil.

Ar an oíche, beidh a dhlúthchara, Seán Ó hEanaigh ó Raidió na Gaeltachta, inár dteannta chun labhairt fé Josie agus roinnt dá fhilíocht a reic dúinn. There will be a strong Conamara flavour to the latest poetry reading in the series 'Fíochán Filí', which takes place in An Lab on Saturday 26th at 7pm. The fine poet Jackie Mac Donncha from Cill Chiaráin will read in his engaging yet relaxed style. He will be accompanied by the Kerry poet Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa, reading a selection of his poems of great philisophical depth. To complete the programme, another Conamara poet, Josie Ó Guairim, was to be with us, but sadly Josie died unexpectedly in Spring of this year. On the night, his close friend, Seán Ó hEanaigh of Radio na Gaeltachta, will be with us to speak about Josie and recite some of his work. 18 West Kerry Live

Snámh na Saoirse, the first play from the pen of Róisín Sheehy from Baile Eaglaise in Corca Dhuibhne, is a poetic and imaginative re-telling of a tragic story that unfolded on the Great Blasket Island in 1909. It features the work of artist Tomás Ó Cíobháin, newly composed music by Gerry O'Beirne and the choreography of Maria Svensson, Dancer in Residence at An Lab. It is directed by Áine Moynihan. This production is dedicated to the late Domhnal Mac Síthigh, father of the playwright, who died tragically in Portugal on June 9th of this year.

Memories Of the Dingle Races from Gáirdín Mhuire

* We used to walk to the races, up to 10 miles there and back. The day before we’d put a hole under the wire in the field next door so we could get in for free! * You’d have to be a Big Shot to sit in the Grandstand back then. It was about ½crown to get in. * Agnes Turbett made a great job of the races. She brought amusements like the Wheel of Fortune and Swinging Boats. On the Wheel of Fortune you could win things like holy statues such as the Child of Prague, Holy pictures, sets of ware, vases and the like. *There’d be a stall for rubber ring throwing and you could win things like money or a watch. *There’d be 3 card tricksters around the field with the Guards running after them. *The horses used to stay in Dick Mack’s, Currans and Shane Connor’s yard West Kerry Live 19

Dingle Notes Richie Williams Races. The annual 3 day event was once again a huge success with great competition in every race and large crowds in attendance each day. The traffic congestion was kept to a minimum with great use being made of the shuttle bus service to and from town. The Ballintaggart venue is of the best in the country and the dedication of the volunteers who put so much work into organising such a major event deserve a huge Míle Buíochas especially from the local business outlets. Historical Walk. As part of National Heritage Week a Guided Historical Walk of Dingle Town will be held on Thursday August 24th beginning from Benners Hotel at 10a.m. The local guide is Kevin O’Shea and it will take approximately one and a half hours to complete. Regatta. One of the longest established local events the Annual 2 Day Regatta will be held this weekend with the first races due off on both Saturday and Sunday at 2p.m. There is a noticeable increase in interest in rowing especially among the younger age groups over the past few years resulting in great competition at all the regattas and the wonderful tradition set to continue well into the future. The organisers would like to thank all the local business outlets who provide sponsorship for the various races which cater for all age groups from under 12s right up to seniors in both Ladies, Mens and Novice categories. Don't forget to drop down to the Pier and cheer on your team and maybe even win a spot prize . Wild Atlantic Way. Fáilte Ireland are adding further to the WWW with a CYCLING SPORTIF starting this September and planned as a biannual event over the next 4 years. The idea is to promote the WWW as a cycling destination both at home and abroad with special events in different locations along the route to coincide with local festivals etc in the off peak season. RIDE WILD are the Irish group responsible for planning the inaugural event which will cater for all categories of cyclists and full details will be publicised within the next few days. Tidy Towns. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. A few business outlets have shown co-operation with us in cleaning up outside and around their own premises on a daily basis. We again appeal to all property owners to make a genuine effort every day and it only needs a few minutes to have a clean and tidy street a place one is proud to live and work in and present to locals and visitors alike. Unfortunately we were not granted permission to hold the annual church gate collection this year as we were not properly registered as a charity as all such permits need a charity number from now on. However we continue to rely on donations from the public to cover the on going expenses in our attempts to keep Dingle clean and tidy and thank all who have supported us in many different ways through the years. Flush. The An Taisce Clean Coasts promotion of THINK BEFORE YOU FLUSH which is being piloted in Dingle this year has been well supported by the local hotels, accommodation outlets and some business premises so far. Basically the idea is to remind people not to flush any item other than toilet paper down the toilet every time one needs to use the facility. The list of items which either block the drains or indeed succeed in going right through the treatment plans to the sea is incredible. The end result is that seaside areas will no longer be safe to swim in let alone walk along and those who make a living from the sea will be seriously hampered if we continue to pollute our waters through careless behaviour. Reminder cards and full details are available from Mara Beo, Dingle Peninsula Tourist Office or West Kerry Live Office. Marine Tourism. Dingle Peninsula Tourism are compiling a MARINE TOURISM STRATEGY and invite people or groups to a general information session on Wednesday August 23rd in their offices from 8 to 9.30p.m. The venue is in No 4 Unit The Wood Business Park and is open to anybody interested in water bases activities or in tourism in general so everybody views or suggestions will be most welcome in compiling a plan for the future improvements in the Peninsula. 20 West Kerry Live

The tour was a four stage race, Tom broke away on first stage gaining a 35 second lead but due to a major crash in bunch, the race had to be stopped! Tom rode very strong over the remaining stages and fought hard finishing 4th overall in GC and remained the 1st Irish man! Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance Marine Tourism Strategy

Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne Straitéis Turasóireachta Mara

The tourism potential of the Irish coastline has long been recognised as a key strength of the Irish Tourism industry on the West Coast of Ireland. The success of the Wild Atlantic Way initiative developed by Failte Ireland has highlighted the true potential of our coastline, beaches, marinas and waterways. The Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance is beginning the process of identifying opportunities for the support and development of marine based activities all along the Dingle Peninsula and in particular the smaller communities on the Peninsula. The Dingle Peninsula has some of the best beaches in the Country if not Europe for water based activities. The coastline has spectacular scenery and is enriched with heritage, culture and history. There is a long tradition of fishing and maritime culture on the peninsula and onshore there is a well-established tourism product and the Dingle Peninsula has a strong position within the tourism market. The Alliance was successful in applying for funding under FLAG (Fisheries Local Action Group) to carry out research and produce a strategy on how marine based tourism can be supported and developed on the Peninsula. Kerry based consultants O’Leary & Associates has been commissioned to carry out the research and develop the strategy on behalf of the Alliance. O’Leary & Associates prepared a similar strategy for the Iveragh Peninsula two years ago. The strategy will focus on a number of areas including the development of blue way trails, developing water based activities where there is a demand and niche and also focus on promoting and developing the peninsula as a destination for marine based activities. The strategy will also identify how on shore activities can be developed as part of wider integrated marine tourism strategy e.g. greenways, heritage trails, food, culture and arts. In order to prepare a comprehensive strategy incorporating the views and ideas of people directly or indirectly involved in marine and water based activities, O’Leary & Associates will be undertaking a consultation process over the next 6 weeks. The first part of this process will involve a number of public information evenings to be held in August. The Alliance would encourage everyone with an interest in water based activities and tourism in general to attend these information evenings so as to get a better understanding of what we are trying to achieve and also to have an opportunity to put forward their suggestions or opinions.

Tá na féidirtheachtaí turasóireachta a bhaineann le himeallbhord na hÉireann ar cheann de phríomhbhuanna thionscal na turasóireachta ar chósta Iarthar na hÉireann, mar atá aitheanta le fada an lá. Tá an bealach go bhfuil ag éirí chomh maith sin le Slí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin, atá á forbairt ag Fáilte Éireann, ag díriú aird ar acmhainneacht ár gcósta, trághanna, muiríní agus bealaí uisce. Tá tús curtha ag Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne le próiseas iniúchta ar na féidirtheachtaí atá ann chun forbairt a dhéanamh ar ghníomhaíochtaí mara-bhunaithe ar fud Chorca Dhuibhne, go háirithe i measc phobail beaga na leithinse. Tá cuid de na trághanna is fearr in Éirinn – nó fiú san Eoraip – le fáil i gCorca Dhuibhne, ó thaobh gníomhaíochtaí mara-bhunaithe. Tá taobh tíre agus radharcanna iontacha ar an gcósta ann, agus é ar maos in oidhreacht, cultúr agus stair na dúthaí. Tá traidisiún fadbhunaithe iascaigh agus cultúr mara ar an leithinis, le táirge seanbhunaithe turasóireachta cois cladaigh, fad is atá ionad daingean bainte amach ag Corca Dhuibhne sa mhargadh turasóireachta. D’éirigh leis an gComhaontas agus iad ag cur isteach ar mhaoiniú ó FLAG (Fisheries Local Action Group) chun dul i mbun taighde agus straitéis a chumadh faoin slí ar féidir turasóireacht mara-bhunaithe a fhorbairt ar an leithinis. Táthar tar éis an gnó comhairleoireachta O’Leary & a Chomhlaigh a choimisiúnú chun tabhairt faoin taighde agus chun straitéis a fhorbairt ar son an Chomhaontais. D’ullmhaigh O’Leary & a Chomhlaigh straitéis dá leithéid i gcomhair cheantar Uíbh Ráthach dhá bhliain ó shin. Beidh an straitéis ag díriú isteach ar réimsí áirithe - na bealaí gorma ina measc - ag forbairt gníomhaíochtaí mara-bhunaithe sna háiteanna ina aithnítear éileamh agus áit ann dóibh, agus ag díriú isteach ar an leithinis i gcoitinne a chur chun cinn is a fhorbairt mar áit saoire dóibh siúd ar suim leo gníomhaíochtaí mara-bhunaithe. Anuas ar an méid sin, aimseofar slite inar féidir gníomhaíochtaí cois cladaigh a fhorbairt mar chuid de straitéis turasóireachta mara chomhtháite ar bhonn níos leithne, m.sh. bealaí glasa, bealaí oidhreachta, bia, cultúr agus na healaíona. Beidh O’Leary & a Chomhlaigh ag tabhairt faoi phróiseas comhairleoireachta le linn na 6 seachtaine amach romhainn, chun gur féidir straitéis chuimsitheach a ullmhú a thabharfaidh ceann do thuairimí agus smaointí daoine atá bainteacht go díreach nó go hindíreach le gníomhaíochtaí mara agus uisce-bhunaithe. Mar chuid den phróiseas seo, beidh sraith de oícheanta eolais oscailte á reachtáil i rith Mhí Lúnasa. Molann Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne do gach éinne bainteach le gníomhaíochtaí mara-bhunaithe, agus le cúrsaí turasóireachta go ginearálta, freastal ar cheann de na hoícheanta eolais seo chun go mbeidh tuiscint níos fearr acu ar an rud atáimid ag iarraidh a bhaint amach agus chun go mbeidh deis acu a dtuairimí is a smaointí a chur in iúl.

Míle Buíochas Ó Haiti Dear parishoners of the West Kerry Churches. Many thanks for your contribution to Haiti again this year which totalled €3,000. Your very generous gift is most welcome and thanks to it we were able to make life a bit better for quite a few people. Haiti had a tough year. We had Hurricane Matthew causing great damage especially in the south. Many of our neighbours are from that area and tell atles of devastation. Thanks to some funding received we were able to help some people re-roof or even rebuild their houses. We have a constant stream of requests for help of all kinds and we do the best best we can with the resources we have. There are student fees, funerals, medical help, food, transport to the provinces to visit family, aid to set up small businesses, assistance to pay for passports so as to be able to emigrate to Chile or Brazil, shoes, etc. Thank you all for all of your help. Sr. Helen Ryder, Port Au Prince, Haiti

The Dingle Way Category: Walking/Hiking Trails Type: National Waymarked Trail Length: 179Kms Climb: 2,590 metres Grade: Strenuous Format: Linear + Loop

Estimated time to complete entire trail: 7 days Start point: Tralee Start point grid ref: Q 835 141 Finish point: Tralee Finish point grid ref: Q 835 141 Ordnance Survey map: OSI Discovery Series Sheets 70 and 71. The Dingle Way is one of over 30 Irish longdistance walking trails. The walk completes a circuit of the Dingle Peninsula, starting and finishing in Tralee, the capital of Kerry. The trail is 179km long and takes an adult who is reasonably fit an average of 8-9 days to walk. The Dingle peninsula, the northernmost of County Kerry’s peninsulas, stretches nearly 50 kilometres into the Atlantic, and is 21 kilometres wide at its broadest. It is a dramatic and varied landscape of coastal plains, sandy beaches, mountains and lakes. The Dingle

Way is a circular route beginning and ending in the town of Tralee that takes in all of these wonderments along the route. Leaving Tralee the route climbs onto the flanks of the Slieve Mish and contours westwards before crossing the peninsula to the scenic Inch beach on Dingle Bay. The route then meanders westwards by the villages of Anascaul and Lispole to the famed town of Dingle, where many walkers will want to stay a while and enjoy the good food, good music and craic. West of Dingle is the most dramatic part of the Way, an exciting coastal trek around the westernmost point of Ireland and a return leg over a saddle below Kerry’s holy mountain, Brandon, and on to Tralee by the shore. Terrain consists mainly of quiet tarmac roads, mountain, field and cliff paths, and over 20km of good beach walking. The aggregate ascent over the route is 2480m,

and although there are some short steep ascents, there are no significant steep climbs. Overnight accommodation is plentiful. The route is steeped in history and scattered with the ruins of ancient dwellings, forts, churches, and castles, and because of its circular layout, can be easily sampled in sections. Additional information with maps is available from: www.dingleway.com and www. irishtrails.ie

The Geological Heritage of West Kerry

Ferriter’s Cove: A Haven Of Fossils Patrick Wyse Jackson

Close examination of the rocks at Ferriter’s Cove will reveal a variety of fossils such as brachiopods, snails, rare trilobites (an arthropod rather like a modern-day King Crab), and corals including one with the wonderful name Heliolites (or sun coral). The corals indicate that the water was clear and rather warm. Many of these fossils are preserved as moulds as the original shells have dissolved away leaving only hollows or an impression of the inner or outer sides of the original shapes. Some fossils are impressive-looking burrows called Chondrites, produced when small soft-bodied organisms tunneled through the sediments. In a similar manner to modern lugworms, these ancient burrowing organisms ingested the organic matter in the sediment to feed. Ferriter’s Cove is a very important geological site as it contains a number of unique fossil species. When you visit please do not hammer the rocks looking for specimens, but rather look for loose pieces of rock— many of these will contain fossils. The Silurian fossils that can be found at Ferriter’s Cove are illustrated in a roadside interpretative panel recently erected by Kerry County Council, in a scheme in association with the Heritage Council and the author of this article.

Ferriter’s Cove is one of the most beautiful small beaches in West Kerry. A horseshoe shaped beach, it is protected by orange-red-olive green rocks on either side. In the mid-1980s the area was excavated by archaeologists who found evidence of man having foraged there for food during parts of the Mesolithic period (8,000 to 4,000 years ago). The area was settled, not by man but by marine organisms, much earlier in the geological past during a period called the Silurian that occurred 415 to 450 million years ago. The rocks at Ferriter’s Cove are composed of fine-grained sediments: silts and sands that were laid down in a shallow ocean. These are part of a thick succession of rocks deposited at the western end of the Dingle Peninsula during the Silurian that are now given the collective name, the Dunquin Group. Small volcanic islands emerged from the seas and produced lavas and volcanic ash now seen at Clogher Head and on some of the Blasket Islands. Around these islands the Silurian seas were teeming full of different life-forms, many of which are now unfortunately long extinct. Over time sediment on the floor of the sea accumulated and this buried the organisms. Some of the rocks now preserve ripples which indicate that the seas were quite shallow and affected by tidal currents. Eventually the sediments consolidated to form siltstones and sandstones, and the organisms were preserved as fossils. Overtime the rocks have been folded by forces within the Earth, and have been turned upright through 90 degrees.

Patrick Wyse Jackson is a frequent visitor to the Dingle Peninsula and teaches geology at Trinity College, Dublin.

Ringforts

The Summer Supplement - Activities, Events & More

Isabel Bennett

A very common monument type in Ireland is the site known in English as the ‘Ringfort’. Well-to-do farmers and their families lived within these enclosures in which one can sometimes still see evidence for houses, usually round and made of stone in this area (clocháin), although other building materials were also used, which leave little or no trace today. Other structures, possibly sheds and other outbuildings are sometimes also found. Some sites have a souterrain or underground passage within them. These features, generally of simple construction when found in Corca Dhuibhne, may have been used for storage and also possibly for refuge. These monuments would have had a general date range of from the 7th to the 10th centuries AD. These enclosures should, more accurately perhaps, be called by their original names, lios, rath, cathair or caiseal, all elements which are still to be seen in many place names in Ireland. The former two are earthen monuments, the latter are built from stone. The earthen forts may have had a palisade fence on top of the bank, and could have between one and three banks with external ditches or fosses, depending on the status of the inhabitants. Society during this period was rural and tribal, with many petty kingdoms. The economy consisted of a mixture of stock-raising and agriculture, with fishing being important in areas close to the sea. Excavations during the 1990s at Cathair na bhFionnúrach stone fort, in Baile na bhFionnúrach, facilitated by Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, have shown us what a high-status cashel was like. The enclosing wall of this site had internal terracing and steps, which would have facilitated defending the site, if necessary. A wall chamber (and a second, now destroyed) could have been used for refuge and storage, and also perhaps to keep a prisoner! The house in the site had two stone rooms, with a souterrain leading from the smaller one. A stone path led from the entrance cashel to the door of the larger room. Finds from the site included imported Mediterranean pottery, iron knives, a fragment of a miniature iron saw, fragments of blue glass bead and of a crucible, for pouring molten metal. This, along with iron slag also found, indicates that metal objects were being manufactured on site. Another well-known site in this area is Ráthanáin, situated on Mám na Gaoithe, near Ceann Trá. This monument stands out because it was re-used in the Medieval period when a tower-house was built within it, and the enclosure was probably re-fortified, although it was originally a ringfort of the Early Medieval Period. Please note that this monument is on private property.

Is féidir eolas a fháil ar na céadta imeachtaí a bheidh ar siúl ar fud na tíre ar an suíomh idirlín www. heritageweek.ie, agus béim i mbliana ar dhúlra na hÉireann agus ar shult a bhaint as. The annual Heritage Week celebration is nearly with us, giving everyone an opportunity to engage with heritage-related activities, in many cases for free. The Heritage Council coordinates the activities, with the aim of promoting and preserving our natural, built and cultural heritage, and this year the emphasis, where possible, is on exploring and enjoying nature and the great outdoors. You can find out about what is being organised throughout the county on the website www.heritageweek.ie, and a booklet listing most of the activities should be available

in libraries, museums etc. This year, as always, there will be Free Entry to Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne on both Sundays, the 20 and 27 August. As well as the usual exhibition, Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne is delighted this year to be hosting the Discovery Programme 25th anniversary exhibition, with emphasis on work carried out in Kerry, and in particular on the Dingle Peninsula and the work of the Corca Dhuibhne 3d project.

Buail isteach ag an Músaem chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil. Tá siopa leabhar, caifé agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá, 10.00 r.n. – 5.30 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat!

Other free events taking place in Corca Dhuibhne include a series of talks in the Jerome Connor Centre in Annascaul (which is above the South Pole Inn), showcasing some recent research carried out by the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group looking at the site of the Church of Ireland church in the village, and its associated graveyard. On Saturday 26 August there will be a Whale Watch at Clogher Head, from 2.00-5.00, organised by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group. This is part of an all-Ireland Whale Watch Day, so even if you are not in West Kerry, you may well be close to another area in which a similar event is taking place. No matter where you are in the country during Heritage Week, there will always be some event to enjoy near you, so do make time for

Of Stones And Flowers There Are Stories To Tell Bert McCann Ballinacourty Church a wee jewel of a building stood at the west of the village from 1816-1963 before being deconsecrated and eventually dismantled. It was a post-reformation construction that housed a ministry to people of the reformed faith and also to adherents who were descendants of folk who had fled religious persecution in France and Germany in the 18th century. These were French Huguenots and German Palatines who had at the time of the reformation found a belief system that did not match that of their rulers or their neighbours. Initially they made their way to England before moving on to Ireland where they settled. The recently elected Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group at the suggestion of a member decided in July last year to form a Heritage committee to explore the provenance of the vanished church and those interred there. Following this decision West and Mid-Kerry Live published a piece that looked at the history of the site and some of the folk who inhabited the village in those times.

tory and Geography and the Boole Library of University College Cork whose contributions have been invaluable. Local legend has it that when the original Ballinacourty Church was demolished some of the stonework wound up being used for the schoolhouse on the set of the 1970’s blockbuster film ‘Ryan’s Daughter’ which was shot in West Kerry. Having garnered Oscars for best actor and best cinematography the movie also opened up the Dingle Peninsula till then a relatively isolated location to the outside world. Almost fifty years later we’ve seen ‘Star Wars’ and its accompanying crew come and go. Both of those filmic adventures provide in part a permanent record of place. Arguably, the Annascaul Heritage Week 2017 series of events have a similar importance. When built heritage disappears it takes with it testimony and evidence of our past. Indeed the record of lives that were led in a village like ours whether conducted graphically or indeed anonymously far from history’s eyes can also be lost. Over the course of National Heritage Week stories will no doubt be told of times gone, some sad and some comical. Most importantly through such community endeavours they will not be allowed to vanish and a continually flowering heritage will continue to be handed down to succeeding generations.

Prominent amongst the features of the former churchyard was the stone over the Hoffman family grave. The Hoffmans, descendants of the Palatine settlers, still live in the area and Robert Hoffman has kept the family grave and the surrounding area in decent order for several years. He along with the Rev Phyllis Jones who ministers to the Church of Ireland congregations of Camp and Dingle came aboard and the ball was set rolling. Subsequently the idea developed to the extent it was adopted as ATTAG’s Heritage project and as a feature of the community’s entry for the 2017 Tidy Towns competition. Further delving revealed a rich bunch of characters that were around Annascaul in days gone by. They were a wide range of people by all accounts. For instance a landowner who beat a boy for stealing apples and drew a curse on himself and his orchard and a woman artist who was reputedly an early advocate for birth control and was apparently regarded as the devil by many folk in the area. There were tragic figures too for example a lonely young police constable who died in the village as well as an anonymous mariner who perished in shipwreck of the ‘Florence Graham’ off Inch in 1861. They will, all forty-one, be named on a dedicated monument fashioned from Valentia Island slate commissioned by ATTAG which will be erected in the graveyard this week guided by local volunteer Michael Devane. Each will also be commemorated in a booklet entitled ‘Ballinacourty Church 1816-1963’ to be launched following a service to be conducted by Reverend Jones and Fr. Jerry Keane parish priest of the Church of the Sacred Heart at 7.30 on Saturday 19th August. The Sacred Heart choir will support the celebrants. A talk ‘Return of the Vanished Church’ delivered by Laurence Jones will follow at the nearby Jerome Connor Gallery above the South Pole Inn. Further events will take place on subsequent days namely

Liam Sweetman, Leathaoibh Mór in Kampong Phluk floating village, Cambodia. Ana fliuch indeed!

Friday, August 25th @8:00pm - at the Jerome Connor Gallery - Cruikshank Redemption; - a story of one of the families connected to the church, their life at Inch and their encounters with the local ‘Moonlighters’ during the Irish Land Wars. Saturday, August 26th @8:00pm - ‘The Painter, the Policeman and the Shipwrecked Sailor’- an account of the life and times of some of the most interesting individuals associated with the church and community. One of the keys to making this exercise in commemoration work is the effort of those who involve themselves voluntarily. A weekly volunteer squad organised by the tidy towns group go out each Monday evening and it is they who have been restoring the grounds and the plant life around the graveyard. This and other tasks around the village are also supported by the Community Employment team.

A guided walk will take place on Cosán na Naomh on Tuesday 22 August as part of a celebration of Heritage Week 2017. Meet at the beach car park at Fionn Trá (Ventry) at 10.00 am. Phone 086-8191942 to book your place in advance. The ancient pilgrim path of Cosán na Naomh takes an 18km (11 mile) route from Ventry Strand to the foot of Brandon Mountain. The tradition of pilgrimage to Brandon Mountain dates back to the earliest times, before the pagan deity Crom Dubh was reputedly ousted from the mountain by the great St Brendan the Navigator (d. 577 or 583). The medieval Christian pilgrimage was probably adapted by the Church from a pagan celebration. The route follows the Saints’ Road from Ventry Strand to the grotto at the foot of Brandon Mountain and winds its way among the fuchsia-hedged fields between the sea and the mountain. The area is rich in bird and plant life, and heritage sites along the route include the famous Gallarus Oratory, a corbelled structure that may have been built to shelter passing pilgrims. The dry stone oratory, described by Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney as ‘a core of old dark walled up with stone a yard thick’, has remained watertight since its construction at some time between the seventh and twelfth centuries. A little further along the route, there is an Ogham stone beside the Romanesque church at Kilmalkedar. The church is dedicated to the local St Maolcéadair and is surrounded by fascinating historical remnants, including a twelfth-century sundial. A nearby holy well is dedicated to St Brendan, as is a collapsed oratory of the Gallarus type. Lying against a wall on the far side of the main road is a bullaun, a stone with man-made cavities, which was probably designed for use in blessings and healings. Although the traditional pilgrimage extended to the summit of Brandon Mountain, the route now ends at Ballybrack. The mountain is hazardous, has steep cliffs, and is prone to sudden disorientating mists. Walkers proceed to the summit entirely at their own risk.

Camp Notes

And to all involved in The Festival of Kerry may you enjoy a very successful and enjoyable 2017 Festival and that includes all those who visit for the Festival too.

Brigid O’ Connor Amelia’s Birthday Amelia Day, Kilteenbane, Camp celebrated a special birthday with a zero on Sunday 6th August at the Old School, Camp. And that was not the only celebration held for Amelia who never misses a community event or occasion in the village. Amelia who is a longtime member of Camp ICA also had dinner with her friends in the guild during the week. Amelia, may you enjoy many many more years of good health and happiness with your family and your many friends. Congratulations ! Salt Water In My Veins “Salt Water in My Veins” is a Radio Documentary by local Film Maker and Producer Murt Mulcahy from Aughacasla. The programme was aired on Radio Kerry on Bank Holiday Monday, poignantly on the anniversary of a young man who lost his life out fishing off the Maharees 26 years ago on 7th August, 1991. Timmy’s parents Joan and John Joe O’Connor along with the Hennessy and the Wyles families all shared the grief, the sadness and the reality of life on the ocean and the heartbreak of the loss suffered by all of them. And strong sentiments are also expressed on the need for the observance of safety at sea at all times. Murt Mulcahy’s work is a wonderful testimony to all those who brave the elements and fish our oceans and to all those who are lost at sea ! May they rest in peace. The Documentary is also a story of the love of the sea and a way of life slowly ebbing away from us in our coastal villages in rural Ireland. The Podcast of this programme is available on Radio Kerry website, www.radiokerry.ie Basketball Champion Camp native Daire Kennelly from Killelton will represent his country and county on the international stage next week at the FIBA U16 Men’s European Championships in Bulgaria. The sixteen-year-old basketballer has spent the past two years preparing for the European Championships and he will set off to Sofia, Bulgaria this week with his teammates for the international competition. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat ! Rose Festival There is almost always a local connection to the Rose of Tralee Festival in West Kerry. And this year Niall O’Hara who is the son of Helen Crean, Knockglossbeg, Camp and London is one of the Rose escorts and Helen’s grand daughter Erin O’Brien is a Rose Bud. This is different to acute fractures which develop as a result of the sudden impact of a fall etc . The most common areas a runner suffers fractures is in their tibias (shin), metatarsals (feet), or calcanei (heels). One of the main risk factors is over-training. Bones need downtime to rebuild after a workout. If you increase the duration, intensity, or frequency of your running too soon, your bones can’t repair themselves fast enough to keep up. Stress fractures are more common in women than men, usually due to nutritional deficits/ inadequate calorie intake, low oestrogen levels, lower bone density etc. On the plus side weight bearing exercise such as running can help strengthen bones, so the longer you have been running over time, the more the body will adapt, reducing the chance of injury. It is often in the first year of training for say a marathon that you see the highest incidence of stress fractures, especially if the body has not been allowed to adapt by gradually increasing the workload. Sometimes it can be better to set the goal to that of a half marathon for the first year if you have previously been relatively inactive for years. Stress Fractures – Symptoms At first, the pain associated with a stress fracture may be barely

noticeable, but it tends to worsen with time. The pain/tenderness usually originates from a specific spot, develops gradually, increasing with weight bearing activity and decreasing with rest. You also might experience some swelling and/or bruising around the painful area. It may also be tender to the touch at the site of fracture. Stress Fracture – Tests Mri is a pretty good way of testing for stress fractures. X-rays can be a bit limited especially in mild or early cases. Sometimes in clinic tapping a tuning fork and then placing its base against the injured area as it vibrates can initiate a pain response as the sound reverberates against the cracks in the bone. Also squeezing the area, say a bone in the foot, between two fingers can be an indication, when there is a sharp increase in pain right at the squeeze. You are opening the stress fracture, so great care is needed, and should only be done by a trained professional. These are only rough guides though, they are not definitive by any means. However they may be an indicator that referral for an MRI is necessary.

etc. to stay fit as the pain begins to reduce. Once you can walk without any pain, you can try a bit of jogging but you have to back off if there is lingering pain. It’s crucial that you build your mileage slowly—start with just a few minutes. Listen to your body. Things like proper, comfortable, supportive, footwear is also obviously important during running to help protect against this sort of injury.

Eddie O’Grady

Stress Fractures – Treatment With a stress fracture you can expect to be taking 8 to 12 weeks off from running for the bone to properly heal. The amount of rest you’ll need depends on the severity of the fracture and its location. Weight-bearing bones like those in Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street the foot heal slower than those in the shin, & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) for example. You can however do other low impact exercises such as cycling, swimming

Appealing Your Leaving Cert Results Question Can I have the marking of my Leaving Certificate exam papers rechecked? Answer Yes, if you are not satisfied with the marks in one or more of your Leaving Certificate exams, you can appeal them to the State Examinations Commission (SEC). Before you make the decision to appeal a result, you can view your exam paper. The SEC will send your school personalised application forms for you to view your exam papers and to appeal your results. (If you were an external candidate, not attending a school, these forms are enclosed with your examination results.) To view your papers, you must return the completed form to the school where you sat the examination by 22 August 2017. The Organising Superintendent will assign you to one of the viewing sessions, which will take place on Friday 1 September and Saturday 2 September 2017. There is no charge for viewing your papers. To appeal your results, complete the application form, indicating the subjects you wish to appeal. The fee per subject is €40 for the Leaving Certificate Established and €15.50 for the Leaving Certificate Applied. Appeal fees must be paid in advance and will be refunded to you if your result is upgraded. The closing date for the SEC to receive applications to appeal is 6 September 2017. Your paper will be re-marked by an appeal examiner, who will be different from the examiner who originally marked your work. The same marking scheme is used for re-marking. Your result may be upgraded, left the same or downgraded as a result of an appeal. There is further information about the appeal process on the website of the State Examinations Commission, examinations.ie. If you are not happy with the outcome of your appeal, you may request a review by the Independent Appeals Scrutineers. Application forms for an appeal review are provided with your appeal results. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Service West Kerry Live 53

80 Years Later Races Poster Returns Home Michael John O’Connor was secretary of the Turlough Races that took place near Lanesboro Co Longford in the 1930's. He kept a locked trunk in his house and when this was opened after his death about 25 years ago, it was found to contain a copy of the 1937 Dingle Races poster together with a letter from the Dingle Races Committee from 1936 requesting that he display their poster at their event. Mr. O’Connor’s family always wanted the poster to end up with someone who had Dingle connections and so his niece in law Majella passed it on to her friend Sheila Flynn whose partner Michael Lyne hails from Dingle. Michael presented James Curran with a copy of the poster just before this years races. James, in turn, made a generous donation to the Irish Hospice.

Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Ní raibh aon teora leis an gcluiche idir Chorcaigh agus Port Láirge. Bhí an- iománaíocht ann, bhí neart agus ealaíon ag sileadh léi. Is dial an báide a fuair Austin Gleeson. Ard imreóir ó bhí sé an- óg ach de bharr barr splanc mí ámharach- ní bheidh sé ar fáil do Chraobh na hÉireann. Mí ádh. Chonaicís an ceann a thug sé leis ó lár na páirce agus a neadaigh sa líon. Bhí draíocht ag baint lena ghluaiseacht. Nuair a díbríodh imreóir ó Chorcaigh theip ar mhisneach mheasfá, ar na buachaillí cois Laoi agus ghluais na Déisigh mar shí gaoithe marfach aduaidh. Ach le ceart a thabhairt dos na hiománaithe seo ní gá do aon duine a bheith tromchroích, óir chuireadar taispéainteas glórmhar ar fáil dúínn. Ní raibh púinn déanta as an slí ag an gCorcaíoch a cuireadh don bpáirc ach dhein Gleeson dearmad mór mar go raibh an chluiche ina nglaic acu. Tá Craobh na hÉireann buaite ag sóisir Chiarraí ar a raibh seisear ón nGaeltacht. Bail ó dhia ortha agus beam ag súil go láidir go mbeidh an lá againn sna mionúír, tá siad go maith. Cad fé na na sinsir in aghaidh Mhaigh Eó sa . Tá Maigh Eó i bhfad níos fearr ná mar a mheasann scata. An dara ceist gan reiteach fós, ná an mbuafaiidh Tír Eoghain ar na. Jaicíní? Fear ná faigheann móladh ach go fuar fánach ná Mícheál ó Mórain ón mBaile Riach. Is mó san saothar déanta aige le aitheantas mar ba chóir a chur os cionn an tsaoil dá laoch Tomás Ághas ó Liospóil. Chuir sé gach eolas, ócáidí agus leabhrán ar fail fé Thomás. Gaisce eile atá déanta ag Mícheál ná a gcuir sé i gcrích le láthair buan a bheith ag pobal Camphill, áis do dhaoine atá fé mí-chumas. Is cuimhin liom é ag troid gan cúlú le cead pleanála a ghnóthú don bhfoirgneamh. Dheineas féin mo chion, sa chás seo, ach is beag é lena ndein Mícheál. Is daoine mar é atá ag teastáil le sruth na himirce a mhaolú agus obair a chur ar fáil dos na daoine aitiúla. Beidh an snáithín opteach againn roimh Nollaig agus is mór an tabhathas san don bpobal, mar tabharfaidh sé caoi do leithéidí Mhichíl uí Mhórin díriú ar fhadhbanna a bhí do-dhéanta go dtí seo. ‘For many centuries before its plantation by the English and renaming as Queen’s County, Laois was under the control of the Seven Septs (clans). Following many bloody battles the surviving septs were transplanted to Kerry, being under sentence of death if returning to Laois. The land in Kerry was available for transplantation following the unspeakable horrors of the ethnic cleansing of Munster during the Elizabethan-Desmond war. The septs were established in Kerry as tenant farmers under their landlord, Patrick Crosbie. These dramatic events are reviewed ... as well as a detailed tracing of the continuing strong presence of the Laois sept descendants in Kerry through the centuries down to the present day.’ - Michael Keane An Café Liteartha
