Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 3rd October is the Stephen Frears directed “Victoria & Abdul”. Star-
ring Judi Dench the film tells the extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim , a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity. The following week on 10th October the feature will be the period crime drama “Detroit”. The Kathryn Bigelow directed film is centred around a police raid in Detroit in 1967 which results in one of the largest race riots in United States history. Detroit delivers a gut-wrenching -- and essential -- dramatization of a tragic chapter from America’s past that draws distressing parallels to the present.

Birding Event at Trá Beg/ Short Strand. On Sunday 1st October join the West Kerry Branch of BirdWatch Ireland to enjoy the diversity of birdlife in this important local wetland just east of Dingle. River, estuary, reedbeds, and seashore provide important feeding and roosting grounds for migrant and wintering birds. Trá Beg holds a wide diversity of waders such as the Greenshank pictured below. In fact there is often a nationally significant count (22) during the monthly Irish Wetland Bird Survey (IWebs). We might expect Black-tailed Godwit, Ringed Plover, Snipe, Oystercatcher, Lapwing. In addition duck and gull species abound, Little Egret, Heron are regulars, and it is possible to catch sight of kingfisher. Birds of prey such as Sparrowhawk and Peregrine are drawn in by the bounty of birdlife here. It is also a hotspot for rarities, birds lost or blown in from America, continental Europe, the Arctic. This is just the best time of year to enjoy our wildlife and test of our ID skills.

After almost five months of tender loving care, Dingle aquarium’s latest Sea Turtle rescue Sally is about to start her journey home with the Irish navy back to Spain. Sally came to the aquarium for some much needed care when she was found by divers barely able to move, right here in Kerry waters last Easter. But she has made a fantastic recovery. So it is with heavy but happy hearts that the aquarium staff will wave her off home in the hands of the amazing Irish Navy who are going to take her back to the warm Spanish waters. Farming News Louis Murchan Transition Year Calf-To-Beef Pilot Project: Two years ago, a number of concerned citizens and six transition year students from Pobal Scoil Corca Duibhne came together with a plan to rear six Hereford heifers to eighteen months on salted-tainted grass, within 5 kilometres of the cost on the Dingle Peninsula, to prove that the salt effect can add flavour to the meat, therefore enhancing its quality and saleability. This pilot project has now come full term, and four of the six heifers have been slaughtered and butchered into the various cuts, and is available for sale. The showcase of this, (and the fun element, as there has to be a bit of fun to these things too) will be a burger stand, stationed at the junction of Main Street, Green Street and Goat Street, manned by these same TY Students. 650 burgers will be available for sale over the weekend, with the remaining prime cuts being available through the local SPAR supermarket. All are asked to support this project, and find out more about the what was done and why. Why Choose Hereford? The characteristics of the modern Hereford were implanted by a group of breeders in Herefordshire more than 200 years ago. Their objective was to fix in one strain of animal the desirable traits of hardiness, early maturity, fertility and the swift, efficient conversion of grass into red meat so firmly that the transmission of these qualities to the next generation could always be relied upon. Their success was spectacular and the Hereford became the cornerstone of the beef economy in all the cattle raising countries in the world. First introduced into Ireland in 1775, the Hereford was recognised as an animal with the temperament, quality and performance to suit both Irish farming conditions and tastes. The breed has had a major influence on Irish cattle production since its introduction. Herefords are valued for their excellent meat, early maturity and easy calving ability. New opportunities now exist for the breed in the era of sustainable farming where ease of management in close harmony with the environment is a major consideration. Some of the Key Characteristics of these animals are that produce excellent quality beef, reach maturity early and high performance on forage based diets. They are a very durable and adaptable animal; Hereford cows thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions. They have an excellent temperament, are easy to calve, have good fertility and longevity Project Details: Initially, Six Hereford calves were purchased (by the TY students) and reared on grass, on Colm Murphy’s Farm in Lispole. These cattle were finished at 18 months and ready for this year’s Food Festival, according to Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions. Butchering services were supplied by Mike Cahillane, Killorglin Much thanks should be given to the local business that are supporting the lads in their endeavour, including The Global Village, John Benny’s, The Chart House, Dingle Fisheries School, Dingle Credit Union, Sheehy’s SPAR and the Pobal Scoil. The “general idea” or future aim of this project is to get a number of farmers interested in re-creating this project, and producing a prime beef product on a co-ordinated basis under the auspice of a locally manager beef producer group or Co-op. This is down the road, but for now, the concept has been proven. If this type of beef can be produced by a bunch of young lads, it most certainly should be a viable project for local farmers. Future participants would be expected to adhere to the same rigours of the likes of Bord Bia BQAS and scheme’s such as GLAS participation. For more details, this will be the topic of discussion at the Farmers Forum in the Disert, on Friday night. At a future date, there will be a documentary available. This will be a fly-on-the-wall documentary produced by Michael and Sile Dorgan and centers on the “goings-on” of the six lads and their cattle. This covers all aspects of the project from the initial purchase of the heifers in Dingle Mart to their final sad demise. With some final filming to be complete, this will not be ready for the Food Festival, but watch this space. Commonage Management Plans: As all GLAS participating commonages shareholders are aware, a CMP must be completed as part of their GLAS requirements. The much-awaited CMP system was eventually made available to advisors last Friday, but it is incomplete, and is not yet upand-running. This is a very concerning and worrying development, as not alone have the Department of Agricutlre not planned this out, they 10 West Kerry Live
have dragged their heel for years on this. The allocation of commonages process to advisors, began on 12th June 2015, with CMPs supposed to be complete by 31st August 2015. That is a very long 25 months ago. These plans are now supposed to be complete by 31st October, but this doesn’t seem feasible. Many advisors have pulled out of the process, due their bad treatment, and accordingly many more have being allocated additional commonages, that they will not be able to complete, given the tight deadline available. Rather that contacting their advisor, by phone or other means of communication, farmers are now being asked to contact their farming representative body (to get them to earn their subscriptions and levies), and to contact the Department directly at 076-1064451 or 05391634000, to get them to explain this mess, and to sort it out. Many advisors are working flat out, trying to meet the demands of this DAFM mess, and are suggesting that farmers be patient, give credit where credit is due, and take their anguish out on those who created the mess, in the first place. GLAS Training: One of the basic requirements of GLAS is that all those participating in te scheme complete a one-day course, provided by an approved GLAS Trainer. This must be complete by 31st December, but with other important issues arising around mid to late December, it is best to get this course obligation out of the way, as soon as possible. Not all advisors are approved trainers, and specialist trainers will provide these courses, in Dingle, saving the need for farmers to travel to Tralee/ Killarney. You may think that this is a pain, but everyone will be paid €168 on completion of the course, which is a better daily rate than many are currently receiving. Anyone interested in booking their course may avail John O’Connell’s services. He is offering dates as follows, in Dingle, 18th 19th 20th, 21st, 23rd, 24th, and 25th October. Applicants are advised to book early and clearly state their preferred date, as if small numbers apply, some of these dates may not be used. For further details, contact John at 086-3067663. Again, it is important to point out that you need to contact the GALS trainer, as it is he who is providing the course. On receipt of you completion certificate, it is also important to retain this in a safe place, as it will be necessary to provide proof of completion, in the case of GLAS inspections. Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme -Worth Over €160 Million: Payments under the 2017 Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme, worth in excess of €160 million, have begun being issued to the 75,000 qualifying farmers since last week. Not everyone receive these immediately, as you can imagine that this is a logistical postal endeavour. The ANC Scheme is an important support for farmers in many regions of the county. The value and number of payments issuing in the first tranche is significantly increased on the 2016 figure, when €140 million issued to 65,000 farmers. The increased uptake of on online applications under the 2017 ANC and BPS schemes speeded up the approval processing and payment is 2017. In line with previous years, not all applications are cleared for payment by this time of year, under the scheme. In particular, many farmers have yet to reach their minimum annual average stocking rate of 0.15 livestock units per forage hectare. However, farmers have until 31 Dec 2017 to do so. Such cases can only be cleared for payment once this requirement has been confirmed. Regular pay runs will continue in the coming weeks to ensure cleared cases are processed for payment as quickly as possible. Farmers should submit any outstanding stocking evidence in support of their application to the Department’s Portlaoise Office as soon as possible to facilitate the early release of payments. N & P Statements to August 2017 now available: The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to August 2017 are now available on the Department’s online system www.agfood. ie. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. Failure to stay under the 170Kg per Ha regulation will result in serious penalties, so please ensure that you do so. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Pork Belly, Squash & Apple, Cider Jus Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Who doesn’t love a slow cooked pork belly?
salt and pepper
It is food festival time of year again and when you get to relax and are having withdrawals from all of the delicious food offerings over the weekend, why not treat yourself to this dish for your Sunday Lunch. This recipe requires is a little bit more work than most of my recipes but I can guarantee you it will be one of the nicest pork belly dishes you will taste. It takes a little bit of planning but after that it is easy enough. Make sure you give your butcher a few days’ notice to get you a nice pork belly. I cure it slightly with some salt, spices and herbs, this really adds to the flavour. If you want to learn loads more about pigs and pork we have a two-day pig butchery course coming up on the 4th and 5th of November at Dingle Cookery School. During these two days, we will get to butcher the pig, learn about all the different cuts and put together dishes using every part of the pig. Each year that we do this course we find that one of the favourites is the slow cooked belly of pork - like this recipe.
for the cider jus
Ingredients for the pork belly 600g pork belly (150g per portion) 150g course sea salt bunch of thyme leaves 1 tbsp. coriander seeds/fennel seeds, toasted and crushed 1 clove of garlic, crushed for the squash & apple 1 large butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cubed
1 granny smith apple rapeseed oil
1 small onion, cut into small dice 1 piece of celery, finely chopped 1 carrot, cut into small dice small mix of fresh herbs such as sage, thyme and rosemary 400ml cider 300ml chicken stock salt and pepper Method For the pork belly You must start two days before. First you must lightly cure the belly To do this, mix the salt, thyme leaves, the spices and the garlic in a bowl. Spread this mixture over the all sides of the pork belly. Leave this on a tray and place in the fridge for 12 hours. For the next step wash the salt from the pork and dry the pork well. Place the pork in a deep tray with some water. The water should come up about half way on the pork belly. Put this in a very low oven at 120ºC for about 4 hours, or until when you push a small knife into the centre it meets very little resistance. Once you are happy with the cooking, allow it to cool for about an hour. At this stage remove the pork from the tray (the liquid is brilliant to cook cabbage in or make a soup), Place the pork on a tray between two sheets of parchment. Put another tray on top of it and some weight on top of this. Keep this in the fridge for at least 12 hours (If it is too big for your fridge you can cut it in half). This will compress the pork and the fat and al-
low it to cook easily when you need it. Before you need to cook the pork again cut it into rectangular pieces (about 3 inches by 1 inch). For the squash & apple Heat a large pan, once it is hot add a little oil followed by the diced squash and sage. Cook this over a medium heat and shake the pan every so often to brown the squash on each side. Let this cook for about 8 minutes. Peel and finely dice the apple. Add the apple to the pan. Let this cook for a further 2 minutes. Season this with salt and pepper. For the cider jus Add the diced onion and herbs to a pot with a little oil and salt. Cook this for about 5 minutes. Next add the celery and cook for a further 5 minutes and repeat with the carrots. Add the cider and cook this until the cider has reduced by more than half. Add the stock and cook for a further 30 minutes. Strain the sauce and reduce it to the required thickness. Season it with salt and pepper. To re cook the pork Place the pork fat side down in a pan over medium heat. Cook this for about 20 minutes turning once or twice. The fat should have rendered down slightly and it will have taken on a beautiful brown colour. Cook it until the pork is warm in the centre. To serve Heat the sauce. Put the butternut squash and apple in the centre of the plate. Place the pork on top. Drizzle some of the sauce over the pork. Enjoy!!!

Richard Williams Peil. Special mention this week to the West Kerry representatives on the victorious Kerry Minor Football Team following their wonderful display in Croke Park. Comhgairdeachas do Davidas, Mark, Cathal agus Franz, also Tommy Griffin as selector/mentor to that team and continued success with your studies and football careers as well. Although the county seniors bowed out in the semi final this year I wish to acknowledge the great contribution and personal sacrifice the Geaney cousins made in providing hours of entertainment for their football supporters and we look forward to further success in the not too distant future.

The 5 West Kerry clubs took part in the John Sheehy under 10 Memorial Tournament on Sunday last and it’s no exaggeration to say that underage football in Corca Dhuibhne is in a very healthy state indeed. The skills and overall talent on display were a joy to watch and I for one hope that all these young people will continue to play gaelic football at this standard for many years to come. Tidy Towns. Due to a technical online hitch the full National Results have not come to hand at the time of compiling these notes but we will have a full analysis in our next edition. Congratulations to Birdhill Co Tipperary on being chosen as overall winners this year. As the darker evenings are upon us our work evenings will switch to Saturdays from October, meeting at the Bottle Bank at 2.30p.m. I will not pre-empt the judges report but it is plain to see that property owners on all our streets really need to roll up the sleeves and get involved for a few minutes each day in maintaining the immediate areas around their premises. Féile Bia. The Annual FOOD FESTIVAL is coming up this weekend and we welcome all the producers and participants to our town for what can only be described as the main success story of the past decade here in the Peninsula. Off Street Parking will be available on a number of approached roads to town but exact locations are dependant on weather conditions during the week. Appropriate signage will be put in place as arrangements are finalised. We encourage as many people as possible to come out and sample the offerings and enjoy the amazing atmosphere surrounding this unique festival. The Dingle Way. Having recently completed the French Camino in Spain I am convinced that the DINGLE WAY here in the Peninsula has the potential to become a major growth area in tourism to the benefit of communities throughout the entire West Kerry Region. The smaller towns and villages in Northern Spain are now almost totally dependant on income from the Camino walkers and Ireland seems to supply a sizeable proportion of participants undertaking various stages of the 870km route. The potential is huge but we first need to upgrade the route, increase the facilities all along the Way ( seating, signage, all year round accommodation etc) and increased budget on marketing at home and abroad. We have the geography but we need to capitalise on the potential asset that we are so lucky to have on our doorsteps. Dog Toilets. The initiative to create Dog Toilets around town have helped to create more awareness of the ugly litter left unattended by some canine owners on our roads and streets. The situation has improved somewhat but we now advise those who pick up their animals droppings that it is their responsibility to dispose of same in the nearest litter bins and not in the toilet facility. The County Dog Warden is due a visit shortly and will be keeping a close eye on regular offenders in the dog fouling left on our popular walking routes. Radio Stations around the country are in regular contact seeking updates on the success or failure of the Dog Toilet idea. The response is of course positive as it is to all questions on what happens in our area. Exercise Park. The outdoor adult Exercise Park on Brewery Road is now full equipped and we urge adults of all ages to try out some of the units as the choice caters for all parts of the body and the facility is another huge asset to the overall development of our town. I was born in Moorestown. I left school at about 15 or 16 years of age in 1937. We never spoke any English at home - it was all Irish. We had a little shop in Moorestown. I used to work there with my mother. When I got a little older I worked with the county Council on the roads. At 24 years of age, I went to England. I worked in Newcastle on Tyne. The English were very poor at the time and it was difficult to communicate with them. I spent four years in England. I went from there to the States. I spent fifty in America, working in the steel mills. This is how they made steel - it’s a mix of carbon, magnet, phos and sulphur. I drilled steel there. I worked in Chicago. People were better off when I returned. I came home occasionally during the fifty years. There were six in the family and only one stayed at home! I played football every evening at home. Is féile Gaeltachta Féile an Phráta agus cuirfimid an teanga chun cinn ins gach gné den eagrúchán. *** This year’s Féile an Phráta ‘Spud Off’ was again a great success. 58 potato growers from across West Kerry competed in 8 parish competitions throughout Corca Dhuibhne, all leading to the ‘Spud Off’ final in Ballydavid on Sunday 16 July. For a full year, a champion would win the bragging rights of having grown the best potato on the peninsula. The day of the final was again a great celebration of all that is best in our communities and in the Gaeltacht, with local families joining with visitors and returned relatives from near and far to pay homage to the humble spud and to pay tribute to its role in our history. In addition to the rivalry of the ‘Spud Off’ and the excitement of the ‘Bake Off’ for the best potato dish, old and young were treated to a festival of music and games in the sunshine in beautiful Ballydavid. The Féile had a pleasant and important sequel recently, when the profits from the activities on that final Festival Sunday on 16 July were donated to Hospice Kerry. Cathaoirleach Elaine Lyne thanked the sponsors for making the competition and festival possible - Bord Bia; Kerry County Council; John Twomey of Smartcharge Ltd; Dingle Cookery School, Raidió na Gaeltachta and Údarás na Gaeltachta. A Powerful Heart Tonic Growing On Trees! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
The Hawthorn Tree (Crataeagus species) has been a part of Irish folklore, mythology and medicine for hundreds of years and may just provide a welcome tonic for our weary and tired hearts in these troubling times. It blooms with a white flush of flowers in May signaling the Summer and now for its last hurrah of the year, it is laden with deep, red berries providing timely health benefits as Winter approaches. It is a long-held belief that the Hawthorn tree is a special place for the fairies that inhabit our countryside and that if you cut or harm a Hawthorn tree bad luck will follow. While rural Ireland may struggle developing broadband and infrastructure, rest assured, fellow countrymen and women, we are well connected to the wee folk who are intent on protecting these sacred trees and have our best interests at heart! Hawthorn has been used in medicine for well over 2000 years right across the globe. This plant, historically used for kidney and bladder stones and as a diuretic, is now one of the most widely used heart remedies in Europe. The aerial parts of the plant, the leaves, flowers and berries, have been frequently used as healing and restorative tonics for heart complaints. In ancient Greek healing, hawthorn was used to treat heart problems and chest pain. In ancient Chinese medicine, it was used to improve the circulatory system and aid in digestion. Europeans have long used hawthorn as a tonic as well as a diuretic and astringent. In the United States, doctors have been using hawthorn for circulatory and respiratory conditions since the 18th century, having learned about it from Native American medicine. Today, we have access to studies and clinical data that support the plant’s cardiac benefits and validates the valuable knowledge passed down from the predecessors of modern medicine. The leaves, flowers and berries contain powerful antioxidants of varying types and strengths. Antioxidants destroy free radicals which are compounds in the body that damage cell membranes, mess with DNA and can cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body as a waste product of metabolism and grow in number as we age but we also expose ourselves to increased free radical damage through environmental toxins, UV light, radiation, smoking, some medicines and air pollution. Scientists agree that free radicals contribute to the aging process and many degenerative chronic illnesses including cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants such as procyandins and flavonoids found in hawthorn berries are particularly potent protectors of heart tissue and blood vessels and are responsible for the plant’s affinity to numerous heart-related issues. The heart benefits include improved coronary artery blood flow as well as improved blood flow to the extremities - a timely boost with the cold Winter on our doorstep! Hawthorn may also be helpful with other conditions such as angina, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and some arrhythmias. It is believed that chemicals in hawthorn may act directly on the heart muscle to increase the force of heartbeats and to relax the arteries around the heart. Hawthorn may also work indirectly by widening blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. As a result, it may assist in stabilizing blood pressure. Importantly, it has now been confirmed that hawthorn extracts benefit individuals with early-stage congestive heart failure. 22 West Kerry Live
Most of the research into the medicinal properties of the hawthorn and its effect on the heart has been very promising indeed and may one day, provide a safe and effective treatment for cardiovascular problems which affect one person in every two in Ireland. It is no wonder the fairies guard our Hawthorn trees so vehemently! Hawthorn berries are in season right now until November. They can be eaten raw but are usually prepared as jelly, wine, syrup or infused in alcohol. You can simmer freshor dried berries in a cup of water to make a heart-warming drink. Hawthorn extract is available as pure juice, teas, tinctures, liquid extractions and capsules and is safe to use in doses ranging from 160mg - 1800mg divided into 2 or 3 doses daily. It can be taken for 4 to 24 weeks although it can take at least 6 weeks to feel its benefits. When taking medication, side effects and interactions are possible and it is best to seek advice if you are currently being treated for a heart condition. Hawthorn may inhibit or increase the effect of many heart medications and may not be an option for everyone if already medicated for a heart complaint. Hawthorn is prescribed by integrative doctors for its heart strengthening and protecting properties for those in early stages of heart disease or have a strong familial risk. As the demand for safer alternatives for treating disease grows, more stringent research is being carried out on natural plant remedies and age-old traditions. The standard of studies and recording of results is in itself a science , but without this kind of research the option for safe, effective drug-free medicine will remain with the fairies, in folklore. Emma Kennedy Accredited Play Therapist
Dingle Maritime Weekend will be held on the October Bank Holiday weekend at Dingle Oceanworld. The weekend is aimed at maintaining an awareness of our maritime heritage and our marine environment.
Main Street, Annascaul

Admission to all talks is free of charge and will take place at Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium. 14.00 SATURDAY 29th OCTOBER
'The coast of Kerry in the 16th and 17th centuries: trade, ships, piracy and plunder.'
iu? nn aI
The talk will draw on sources such the High Court of Admiralty Papers, State Papers and other contemporary sources to illustrate episodes when the expansion of maritime empires meant that the diversity of goods traded encouraged smuggling, piracy and corruption. It will show that harbours like Dingle, Ventry and Valentia, rather than being remote, formed part of a network central to this global development in commercial shipping, colonial enlargement and associated growth in opportunistic plunder.

Cromane GAA SENIORS: Novice Championship quarter-final: Cromane 1-18, Kilgarvan 0-10 Our seniors were very impressive in dispatching Kilgarvan by 11 points in the Novice championship quarter-final in sunny Kilgarvan this evening. While it was bright and calm for the game, underfoot conditions were damp given the waterfall of rain the Kilgarvan area received the previous night. The home side got off to the better start with young Gearóid Fennessy at midfield and veteran Connie Cremin impressing. After 5 minutes they led by 0-2 to 0-1, but that was as good as it got for the Roughty Valley men. Cromane - faced with a packed Kilgarvan half - started to play some smart football, playing around the multiple sweepers. It helped that Donnchadh Walsh and Darren Houlihan established a firm footing at midfield. We soon started to tack on the points, hitting six-in-a-row, to lead 0-7 to 0-2 after 20 minutes with the O’Sullivans, Seán and Paul Patrick doing most of the damage from the inside line. Paul Patrick ended the game with 1-7 to his name, 1-3 from play, and he also crashed a mighty shot off the crossbar halfway through the second half. By half-time our lead was seven, 0-10 to 0-3. We didn’t take our foot off the pedal in the second half and stretched the lead with further points from Donnchadh Walsh, Mikey Houlihan, and Micheál Shaughnessy. The only goal of the game arrived with a quarter left when Paul Patrick O’Sullivan found the net after a slick Cromane move, this left them home and dry as they led by 1-17 to 0-7. Kilgarvan plugged away and finished the game out kicking three of the last four scores to leave the final score: Cromane 1-18, Kilgarvan 0-10. Next up for the seniors is a Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship clash with our parish neighbours, Laune Rangers, in Killorglin next Saturday 30th September (throw-in 2.30pm). It was good to see a good scattering of supporters in Kilgarvan this afternoon, more of the same in Killorglin on Saturday. As a result of this win we are now due to play Scartaglin in the Novice championship semi-final on a date to be decided. We also have our county league promotion play-off to look forward. Plenty to look forward to, well done lads. Team and scorers: Paudie McCarthy; Brendan Foley, Eoghan Walsh, Stephen Foley; Liam Teahan, John Michael Foley, Finbar Casey; Donnchadh Walsh 0-3, Dermot Houlihan 0-1; Shane Ahern, Micheál Shaughnessy 0-1, Emmet Casey; Mikey Houlihan 0-1, Seán O’Sullivan 0-4 (0-2f), Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 1-7 (0-4f). Replacements: Danny O’Shea for PP O’Sullivan 45th minute, Seán Teahan for JM Foley 45th minute, Cian O’Keeffe 0-1 for M Shaughnessy 50th minute, Martin Sweeney for S Ahern 50th minute, Eamonn O’Connor for S Foley 50th minute, Jason Clifford for S O’Sullivan 55th minute, Paudie McMahon, Patrick Moroney. Parish League: Thanks very much to all players and coaches who took part in our Parish League on Sunday morning. It was a great event and we hope everyone enjoyed it. A big thank you to all who helped out on the day - and to all the parents who kindly provided lots of lovely treats. Our brilliant coaches can now enjoy a well-earned break. Three times Camp juniors took the lead and three times we scored to level things up. Going into the last few minutes I think both teams would have bein happy to take the draw but with only a few minutes left DBR were finally to take the lead. It was exciting stuff for the last few minutes but we held on to take all three points. A huge thank you to our neighbours who once again played their hearts out in a very sporting manner. Dingle Bay Rovers u16s 3-1 Iveragh u16s. Massive congrats and well done to our u16s. Our 1st game of the season saw our u16s come out on top against a very good and sporting Iveragh side. Even though the weather wasn’t great it did manage to stay dry for the entire game and great credit is due to both teams who had to deal with a strong wind. We wish Iveragh all the best for the season ahead and look forward to our trip to play ye in the future. Thanks also to ref Mike O’Sullivan who did a fantastic job and let both teams play attacking soccer. The Juniors want to wish our senior team the very best of luck on Sunday in the National cup up in Limerick v AK United. All support very welcome . Any new players very welcome to come along and try out and of course our club would only be delighted to anyone who would like to start coaching or take up any position . 34 West Kerry Live

A Wish Come True When Lucia Ross Townsend returned to Camp this week, it was to carry out the dying wish of her late husband Ian whose love of West Kerry and Ireland inspired him to write a poem, The Banshee. Ian who was born in Melton Mobray, England spent many years working in this country until his retirement and it was one of his wishes that his poem would be put into print in in his adopted homeland, West Kerry and Ireland.
The Banshee There she was limping and lilting and weeping, On the banshee breezes of the crystal night. Stark on the hillside above old Dún Laoghaire, Shattered with stillness as she came into sight Years ago now, is the night of my speaking, Misty the eyes that was true and clear, Long are the miles from here to Dún Laoghaire, Deep is the memory, unfaded and near Christmases come and the harvest fields ripen, Snow on the hillside, or sun on the stream, Long are the hours I've thought of Dún Laoghaire, Often I've thought it was only a dream.

Came with her eyes filled, and tears streaming down, Held her in my arms above old Dún Laoghaire, When moonlight ran silver, the streets of the town. Cried in my arms like a child for a kitten, Comforted her 'til the crowing cock day, Gave her my coat, for its cold in Dún Laoghaire, Rubbed her cut feet, that were cold as the clay. Begged her come with me, confessed that I loved her, She shook her sweet head and sobbed by the wall, Then she stood up and looked down on Dún Laoghaire,

Songs from the Past by Richard Prendergast It’s thumbs up to Adam Dunphy of Glencar, the boy who inspired Richard Prendergast to put together a fundraising CD, Songs from the Past. Richard, a native of Keel, Castlemaine, met Adam, who has Down Syndrome, in the course of his job driving the local school bus. “Adam would be at the door with his mum Mairead,” explained Richard, “waiting while his sisters Amy and Orla boarded the bus. One morning I gave him the thumbs up sign and he did the same back to me, and after that, he was first at the door every morning waiting to greet me.” This gentle act of friendship brought about a desire in Richard to ‘do something’ to support those with Down Syndrome. Richard, an All Ireland finalist in Sean-nós singing (1974), mulled over his options and decided to utilise his musical ability in compiling a CD – his first – from his repertoire of traditional ‘songs from the past’. Richard contacted Pat Donegan at Pats Tracks Studio and arranged a meeting to discuss his idea. They met at Pat’s studio in Causeway and less than eight hours later, the CD was recorded. “I had a list of songs when I got there”, said Richard, who won first place in the (then) ballad category of the first Writers’ Week forty years ago with his rendition of John Gallivan’s The Roving Fiddler Man. The CD has 12 tracks (11 songs, one recitation), a combination of traditional songs like the tragic John Twiss from Castleisland and nostalgic The Meet was at Matthews, to the less familiar From Inch to Castlemaine written by Moss Prendergast, Richard’s late uncle. The album can be purchased for the sum of €10 from a number of outlets around the county including the 321 shop in High Street, Tralee, all26proceeds to Down West Kerry LiveSyndrome Kerry. Enquiries to Richard Prendergast, 087-7629386.

Milltown Castlemaine Sympathy: Another link with the teams of the 50’s and 60’s was severed last week with the passing of William Burke, Ballygamboon. William started his football at a young age when up to 30 people from the locality gathered on the family farm to play football. William went on to play for Milltown Castlemaine and was part of a very successful period which saw them capture the Mid Kerry Championship in 1957,1961,1962 and 1965. His fine physical stature meant he was a linchpin at mid field in these victories. He retired in the late 60’s but his interest and support for the club and community remained steadfast throughout the years. To his wife Marian, son William, daughter Norma, brothers John and Jim, sister Nora along with their extended families, the club sends its deepest sympathy. Under 14’s: Hard luck to our under 14’s who were defeated by Beaufort in the Mid Kerry Plate Final. The boys put in a fantastic effort. Milltown Castlemaine were unfortunate to be without their captain Cillian Burke who fractured a bone in his hand last week. We wish Cillian a speedy recovery. Special thanks to the management team of Ian Twiss, Stephen Roche, Colin O’ Grady, Damien Whyte and John Murphy. Panel: Cathal Daly,Ben Downes,Shane O’

Afterwards a large gathering of family and friends joined the happy couple for a wonderful wedding reception at The Rose Hotel, Tralee. The very best of luck, health and happiness to Sheila and Pat in their future life together. Camp Fair. The sun shone down on Camp Fair on Monday, a photographers paradise for sure! Pens of sheep lined Camp Cross as in olden times, a thousand wethers, ewes, rams, breeds, mainly scotch and cheviot all sold on the day. The men from Keel came across the hill and this time with sheep in trailers, walking sheep a thing of the past now! And they were welcomed, the Overall Champion sheep of the day was won by Tom Brosnan, Annascaul, another man who never misses the fair. Perpetual cups were returned and handed out again for another year to be held and cherished on the mantelpiece until Camp Fair next year. Jacinta O’Brien was delighted with the Pet Show, they were dogs and lambs and more and all won prizes. There was a great turnout for the Fancy Dress too and Sheila Griffin and Catherine kept everybody happy with a little gift for all participants. James Allman lead the young musicians who entertained on stage outside Ashes for a few hours. they went down a treat with everybody. Obituary. The Death of Eileen O’Brien, Flemingstown, Annascaul occurred last Tuesday. Eileen was very outgoing, popular and well liked and along with her late husband John Paul had friends all over the county. Eileen was secretary of the Kerry branch of Múintir na Tíre for many years, encouraging and promoting community development in rural areas. She was laid to rest in Ballinclare Cemetary, Annascaul following requiem mass celebrated by Fr. Gerry Keane PP, at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Annascaul. Eileen is survived by her nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives and many friends and neighbours. Her husband John Paul predeceased her. R.I.P. The news of the death of Castlegregory man Gerald McKenna in Brisbane, Australia recently was met with sadness by all who knew him growing up in our locality in the sixties. Gerald visited home regularly over the years and so it was only fitting that he would choose the home sod of Killiney to be his final resting place. He was laid to rest in Killiney Cemetary alongside his father and his mother Delia (nee Moynihan) following requiem Mass on Monday celebrated at St. Marys Church, Castlegregory. A large gathering of friends and family turned out to pay their last respects to Gerald and his family on Sunday evening at Lynchs Funeral Home, Castlegregory and at the Mass and funeral on Monday. Sympathy is extended to his all family, sons Martin and Kieran, daughters, Gwenda, Sarah and Siobhan, grandchildren, brothers and sister, extended family and many friends in Brisbane and in Castlegregory. Emerging Artist: Niamh Porter Conor Browne
What has been your most successful exhibition? Kfest 2017 and winning the Screaming Pope Prize was an amazing experience. What I appreciate most about exhibiting is meeting other artists, curators and the public. While K-fest was a great opportunity to show my work, I think the most valuable thing about the festival are the opportunities it presents to emerging artist to network with people in the art community. To anyone thinking of applying for Kfest 2018, I would recommend it, 100%! Where will you exhibit next? I am very excited to be exhibiting at the 2017 Kerry Visual Artists’ Showcase at the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gealteacht in Killarney, organised by the Kerry County Council. The show opens on Culture Night and runs until the Friday the 13th October. I’ll be presenting work with seven other Kerry based artists. We all seem to work differently so it should be an interesting show.

Is the Kerry art scene growing? Absolutely! With the growth and continuation of arts festivals like Kfest, Féile Na Bealtaine and Animation Dingle and the hundreds of events planned throughout the year, particularly on Culture Night, audiences in Kerry really seem to be growing. I have met some brilliant artists who are based here and it encourages me to get involved even more.
Niamh Porter is a Kerry visual artist based in Limerick. She attended Limerick School of Art and Design (2012-16), graduating with a First Class Honours in Fine Art, Painting. She is currently working as a member of the Culture Team at Ormston House, a cultural resource center in the heart of Limerick City.
Where can I purchase one of your Artworks? For anyone who would like to get in touch, my contact details can be found on my website www. niamhporter.com.
Explain what you do in 100 words. I currently make work about architecture in European cities, with a focus on the legacy of Modernist design. The cities I document have all been rebuilt from wreckage following World War ll; I am curious to examine the seemingly indestructible quality of architecture when there is a tension between permanence and transience. I try to translate these ideas into painting. The near exclusive use of metal and glass in cities, the bleaching of historical architecture and photographic processes used throughout the work inspires the form and colour palette.
Conor Browne is the head of Spoken Word for the K-fest Festival.
How do you work?. There is a definite process to my practice. It begins with traveling to these cities and documenting the buildings from different viewpoints. The images are printed digitally and then manipulated manually in a darkroom using a photogram technique instead of photo editing programmes like Photoshop. However, I found there were limitations with scale and this led to painting. I explore the attributes to a photograph; a dramatic viewpoint, scale and perspective distortions, cropping and blurring through painting. What art do you most identify with? What influences your work? The photography of the Russian Constructivist, Alexander Rodchenko has influenced my most recent work. The ambition of Constructivists was to present modern urban life, to express the dynamic cities and to celebrate industrial materials. Rodchenko’s photographs achieve this through the use of dramatic viewpoints, something I try to use in my own work. I am continuously influenced by multidisiplinary Modernist designers and fine artists such as Mies van der Rohe, Lazlo and Lucia Moholy-Nagy, Agnes Martin, Rothko, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Isa Genzken to name a few. What’s your favourite art work? I don’t think I have a single favourite artwork. One of my favourite artists is Irish architect, furniture designer and painter Eileen Gray. A goal of mine is to visit her building, e-1027, built from 1926-29, in the south of France. What memorable responses have you had to your work? Being awarded the Screaming Pope Prize at Kfest Music and the Arts 2017 has been the best response I have had to my work. I am still so delighted and it has definitely motivated me to continue painting. Professionally, what’s your goal? At the moment, a goal of mine is definitely to travel more, to see exhibitions and research. The next thing I want to achieve is a new body of work, perhaps touching on some aspects of previous work but refining these ideas using new materials and more ambitious compositions. Has Kerry inspired your Artwork? In my most recent work, I can’t say it does. However, since I am away from home more and more, I really appreciate the landscape above all. There are so many interesting and beautiful aspects that I would to research for future work, whether it be through colour or subject matter.
K-fest is one of Ireland’s premier festivals for Emerging Art. To date, the festival has housed over 450 visual artists and approximately 2,000 original works of art, covering paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. In these interviews Conor will introduce you to some of the best emerging Artists born or practicing in Kerry.

Patella Dislocation (knee) - Treatment Eddie O’Grady The patella, or kneecap lies in front of the knee joint. It is attached to the quadriceps muscle via the quadriceps tendon and acts to increase the leverage from this muscle group when straightening the knee. The patella glides up and down vertically within a groove called the patello-femoral groove at the front of the thigh bone(femur) during knee bending. Dislocation of the patella occurs when the patella moves outside of this groove. The patella may also sublux rather than fully dislocate, meaning it only moves partially out of position. These injuries usually occurs as a result of an acute blow to or as a result of a twisting action on the knee. In most cases the patella will relocate into the patellofemoral groove on straightening of the knee. This, however is usually extremely painful. Risk factors which make a patella dislocation more likely are: 1. Insufficient quadriceps strength especially on the inside of the knee. 2. Over pronation of the feet - this is where the feet roll in (collapse in slightly on the flattened arch with the toes turning outwards) when running. This causes torsion at the knee, leaving the patella susceptible to moving outwards as the quadriceps contract. 3. An increased Q angle of the knee. The Q-angle of the knee is the angle formed by lines representing the pull of the quadriceps muscle and the axis of the patellar tendon. People with an increased Q ankle are often termed knock kneed. This angle when too large increases the risk of patellar dislocation. The vastus medialis obliqus muscle (VMO) is part of the quadriceps muscle group on the inside of the thigh, and is responsible for maintaining the stability of the patella towards the inside of the knee. If the VMO isn’t strong enough, the patella is much more susceptible to dislocation. Treatment of patella dislocation Apply RICE( Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) principles to the injured knee . Ice can be applied for 10 to 15 minutes every hour initially reducing to 2 or 3 times a days as swelling and symptoms reduce. Also medications like non steroidal antiinflammatories (NSAIDs), analgesics, pain killers etc. would be beneficial, in order to manage both the inflammation and the pain . Rest from any sporting activities and seek medical advice. An athlete who has had one episode of patella dislocation is often susceptible to another. The knee may need to be immobilized for 2-3 weeks initially. A knee support can provide protection for the joint initially during rehab. Patella stabilizing braces have been specifically designed to provide support for the knee cap. Quadriceps strengthening is initiated during this phase. These should be in the form of static exercises. Quadriceps electrical stimulation is an option for muscle reeducation if the patient has difficulty activating the muscle secondary to pain. Electrical stimulation may also play a role in the management of knee joint effusion. When swell-
ing, inflammation has subsided, the patient may progress to the recovery phase of rehabilitation. When the acute symptoms settle down a full knee strengthening rehabilitation program is required to help avoid future recurrence. Specifically exercises for the VMO muscle on the inside of the quadriceps are important, but overall quadriceps strengthening is also beneficial . The VMO is an important medial stabilizer of the patella. The prevailing theory has been that lateral patellar tracking is associated with VMO weakness. However, research has been inconclusive for VMO weakness as a direct causative mechanism of lateral patellar tracking(patellar subluxation/dislocation). Recent findings have shown that general quadriceps strengthening has demonstrated reductions in lateral tracking irrespective of the mechanism. Therapy should also include a protocol for hamstring muscle stretching. Tight hamstring muscles functionally counteract their agonist group, the quadriceps.

Once pain has resolved sufficiently to complete daily activity requirements without exacerbations, the patient can advance to the final phase of rehabilitation. Advanced rehabilitation programs progress to jogging, running, plyometrics, and sport-specific exercises. Patients must be monitored and must always follow proper technique, as well as learn to properly fire the VMO.
Sometimes Surgery is needed. Most surgeons agree, if the kneecap dislocates multiple times, then surgery should be considered. When the kneecap dislocates, it is possible to damage the cartilage in the knee, leading to an increased risk of knee arthritis. When multiple dislocations occur, patellar stabilization surgery should be considered. While dislocations of the patella can occur after surgery, they are much less common.

‘Ina bhuachaill óg i gContae Chiarraí, chonaic Tomás Ághas an éagóir a d’imir rialtas Shasana ar mhuintir na hÉireann, agus gheall sé go dtroidfeadh sé ina choinne. Rinne sé amhlaidh, ag glacadh páirt in éirí amach 1916 i gCill Dhéagláin, áit a bhfuair lucht na Poblachta an ceann is fearr ar a namhaid. Gabhadh Tomás ina dhiaidh sin, agus fuair sé bás i bpríosún i 1917 de bharr stailc ocrais. Ba phíobaire, múinteoir, agus Gaeilgeoir é, agus bhí dúil aige i gcluichí na nGael riamh.

Samhlaítear anseo Tomás Ághas agus an saol eachtrúil a chaith sé, ó pháirc na himeartha go páirc an chatha. Tabharfaidh an scéal seo deis do dhaoine óga go háirithe aithne a chur ar dhuine tábhachtach i stair na tíre, céad bliain tar éis a bháis.’ - Coiscéim
