Fish Trail Angling Project launched in Kerry A new EU funded project “Fish Trail”, aimed at promoting and developing angling tourism in Kerry, was launched by Munster MEP Seán Kelly this week. The project has been secured for the county by South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. (SKDP) and has project partners based in Slovenia, Denmark, Portugal and the UK. It is funded under the COSME funding stream and will run through 2017. It is supported in Kerry by Kerry County Council and Inland Fisheries Ireland as will involve working with all the key angling groups in the county. The project will also be supported by the Film and TV Production course under Brian Nolan which is run through the Kerry ETB.

SKDP Project Manager Seán de Buitléar said the key aim of the project is to encourage anglers from the partner areas and beyond to visit Kerry for a fishing holiday. “We will develop a series “know how” videos for prospective anglers to provide them with key knowledge they need to enjoy the many different angling experiences they can find in Kerry” Seán said. “Our key goal is to ensure a potential visiting angler knows that there is always somewhere they can go fishing in Kerry, regardless of the conditions” he added. “We will undertake a number of marketing and angling development initiatives including a fishing festival in conjunction with all Kerry partners, linking with our partner regions over the course of the project” Seán said. MEP Seán Kelly said he was delighted to support the Fish Trail project and congratulated SKDP on securing the funding of just over €40,000. “There are significant funding opportunities available through Europe for development projects in Kerry and beyond and SKDP have been very pro-active in securing such funding and in developing links with similar organisations across Europe which I greatly welcome” Seán said. He added that projects such as Fish Trail have the potential to make a significant contribution to the economic development in Kerry through developing opportunities that exist in areas such as angling tourism”.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 4th October the feature at the Dingle Film Club will be the Irish comedy “The Young Offenders”. Inspired by the true story of Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure in 2007, The Young Offenders is a comedy road movie about best friends Conor and Jock, two inner-city teenagers from Cork who dress the same, act the same, and even have the same bum-fluff mustaches. Jock is a legendary bike thief who plays a daily game of cat-and-mouse with the bike-theft-obsessed Garda Sergeant Healy. When a drug-trafficking boat capsizes off the coast of West Cork and 61 bales of cocaine, each worth 7 million euro, are seized, word gets out that there is a bale missing. The boys steal two bikes and go on a road trip hoping to find a missing bale which they can sell so as to escape their troubled home lives....But Sergeant Healy is in hot pursuit. The following week on Tuesday 11th the feature will be “The Girl On The Train”. Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel this mystery thriller is the story of Rachel Watson’s life post-divorce. Devastated by her recent divorce, Rachel spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.

Put a pan on medium to high heat. Season the fish with salt and pepper. Put a drop of rapeseed oil into the pan and lay the fish fillets in the pan, skin side down. Farming News

Louis Murchan

Carbon Vanigation Registration If you are participating in the Beef Data Genomics Scheme, you must complete a Carbon Navigation. Many farmers like to leave these things to the last minute, as do many advisors. If everybody does leave it till late, thats when things hit the fan that make a mess. Should you fail as a farmer to have a completed Carbon Navigation by 31st October next, you will be excluded from further participation in the BDGS. As a result of this, you will be asked to repay and finances received as part of this scheme. Registering is quite simple. Not all advisors are registered to carry out these programmes/plans. If yours is not, ask him to recommend a colleague, or look up the Department of Agriculture list. You joined this scheme, and your advisor may not even know that you are in it, unless you specifically told him. So, the onus is on you to approach him. Don’t wait for this to call, as believe it, there is a lot more going in the world of agriculture. Once you contact your chosen advisor, give him your Herd Number (if he does not already have it) and he will ask you various details such as farm size, herd size, a breakdown of cows, replacements, calves, etc, the amount and type of feed and fertilizer used, housing dates and release dates. There will be a few more questions, but it’s not rocket science, and you will not be asked to divulge the Third Secret of Fatima. Once he has all these details he will register you with Bord Bia, who will send you a text. You must reply to this, with a YES, which will allow his to act as your agent in this matter. You will then receive a with an authorisation code. This you must give to your advisor, and in the words of a famous otter, in Co Meath, “Bob’s your uncle”. But it must be repeated, don’t expect a knock on the door or a phone call, reminding you that you need to register and complete this. It’s Big Boy’s Rules! World Food Day Activities For Schools Activities are planned for school children associated with UN World Food Day, which falls on 16th October each year. Teachers and students should be aware of a poster and video competition to be run by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for World Food Day 2016. The FAO is calling on children and teens all over the world, from age 5 to 19, to use their imagination and create a poster that illustrates this year’s World Food Day theme: “Climate is changing – food and agriculture must too”. The FAO is also asking teenagers aged 13 to 19 to produce a video no longer than 1 minute with their phones on their ideas on the World Food Day theme. The closing date for these competitions is 30 September 2016. Ireland has been involved in the FAO’s efforts to promote food supplies and security for all. Teachers and parents are been asked to encourage their pupils/students/children to enter these competitions. This will demonstrate the important role of agriculture and food in sustainable development. There is also a booklet called ‘World Food - Facts, Figures and Activities’ available from the Department of Agriculture and is aimed at raising awareness amongst school children of the serious challenges faced by the world’s poor, while highlighting the real potential in these countries if they are provided with opportunities to develop their agriculture production in a sustainable manner. Fertiliser Spreading, Fym/Dung & Slurry Spreading The deadline for the application of chemical fertiliser was 14th September however the deadline for storing in the field and spreading Farmyard Manure and Dung is midnight on 31st of October 2016. After this date no FYM/Dung can be stored or spread on lands. Slurry Spreading:- The deadline for slurry spreading is midnight on the 14th of October 2014. Spread slurry on the ground accordingly to the crop requirements. Slurry should not be spread when heavy rain is forecasted within 48hrs of spreading. Slurry should not be applied on soils that are saturated or frozen or covered in snow. This will reduce the risk of slurry run off. If spreading cattle slurry, do not spread more than 3,000 gallons in one individual application as this is the most that the crop can respond to. Surry should be spread in the springtime when weather and ground conditions favour as this is the time when grass plants require the nutrients the most for growth. Aim to spread on paddocks or fields that will be grazed first. Do not spread slurry on land with heavy grass covers. Instead graze out these fields firstly and then spread slurry on them immediately afterwards. Slurry is best spread on dull, dark days. This reduces the loss of nitrogen to the atmosphere. Use new technologies like trailing shoe or a dribble bar to reduce the loss of nutrients. For silage ground, applying slurry before taking the cut of silage will reduce the amount of bagged fertilizer required. Soil Fertility:- Fertile soils are essential for grass and crop growth. By doing a simple soil test, you can save €23/acre on fertilizer. Soil samples can help you identify what parts of the farm need extra fertilizer to improve

12 West Kerry Live

and what areas have enough and don’t need any. The pH of the soil is also important. A low pH will result in lower availability of nutrients in the soil and a poorer response to fertilizers. Spreading lime after sampling the soil should be a priority. But don’t over lime. Over liming can cause trace element imbalances. It is advised not to apply over 3t/acre. Soils with a index 3 will yield more grass DM than a soil in index 1. Approximately 0.6t/acre. Know the soil index so the correct fertilizer could be applied. Plan fertilizer and slurry application so that soils can be maintained in index 3. Use slurry on the farm more effectively so to reduce the fertilizer costs. Grass or crop yield will be limited by the nutrient in the shortest supply. Excess supply of one nutrient is wasteful if yield is being restricted by another nutrient. Opening Of Financial Approvals For The Afforestation Schemes Those forest owners with valid technical planting approvals may now apply for financial approval under the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme. Making the announcement, at last weeks Ploughing Championship, Minister Doyle stated that since he took over as Junior Minister for Agriculture the level of interest in forestry among farmers and other landowners has greatly increased. Forestry is a viable land use option either on its own or in combination with other farming enterprises however these establishment grants for planting and premium payments for 15 years are well known, but not the only options for farmers/landowners. Those contemplating forestry should also be aware that there are generous tax incentives for thinning and final harvesting so that both the medium to long term returns from forestry should be taken into account. Planting normally commences in late Autumn and the application process to secure funding for such planting projects, that have already been pre-approved by the Department, commences around this time each year. Two New Initiatives Launched At “The Ploughing” Opt-In.ie:- Opt-in.ie is a new website which provides information on local training and diversification opportunities for rural families. The website www.opt-in.ie was developed by Teagasc and contains advice in relation to training, skills development, and business development and diversification opportunities. The portal is being piloted for two counties - Limerick and Tipperary - with the intention of rolling it out nationwide in 2017. The web portal will include regularly updated content on skills training, diversification and business development opportunities, provided to rural families by different providers including Local Enterprise Offices, Enterprise Training Boards, Local Development Companies, Skillsnet and Teagasc. Rural Tourism:- This publication, called Rural Tourism is aimed at guiding rural dwellers on diversification opportunities in agri-tourism. This publication, produced by Teagasc, provides important guidance which complements the resurgent interest in Irish food, heritage and holidays. A Week In The Life – Phil Hogan EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development With Brexit looming fast and the squeeze being put on farming, irish agriculture needs all the help it can get. Fortunately, we have a trump card in Europe. Many people give out about our EU Commissioner, but he has “great power, and with great power comes great responsibility . But what is a day or a week in the life of the most powerful Irishman, in the world like. Well, this is a brief look at last week. Early in the week he went to Naples and Sicily, to promote European Quality Products and Mediterranean food products. While visiting Naples and the neighbouring city of Caserta he attended a conference hosted by Nicola Caputo MEP, a key member of COMAGR, then he visited a farm in Campania which produces milk for the production of Buffalo Mozzarella, which is exported throughout the world. He also visited Sicily, where he participated in a conference on “Policies for Agriculture in Southern Europe”, hosted by Giovanni La Via MEP. Chairman of COMENVI, where he had to present a GI Certificate to the producers of the latest product to achieve such status, in this case a Sicilian olive oil. Apparently Italy is very much ‘top of the class’ according to Mr Hogan, when it comes to recognising the value of quality products. It boasts the highest number of registered origin products of all EU Member States - 284 food products, 603 wines and 37 spirit drinks. He finished the week at Rotterdam port, with the Dutch Minister for Agriculture, Martijn Van Dam to witness the resumption of the export of veal from The Netherlands to the United States and to see shipments of meat to China and the US. The symbolism of today’s shipment is shown in the fact that Rotterdam is the world’s no 1 port for shipments of agrifood, reflecting the EU’s position as the no 1 global agrifood exporter. All this from a 57 year old man who is entitled to a good pension, but prefers to work for the pretection and betterment of agriculture Its not a lifestyle many would fancy. Would you?

Ted Talks: Éamon de Buitléir Ted Creedon This interview with wildlife film-maker Eamon de Búitléir was broadcast on Radio Kerry on February 27, 2005 as part of the series South by South west.

Rescued from the Great Blasket My earliest memory of Kerry goes way, way back to when I suppose I was about eight or nine years of age. I can’t quite remember. But I came down here to Baile an Fheirtéaraigh with my brother Rúairidh who was a year and a half younger than me. My father at that time was Aide-de-Camp to President Douglas Hyde and his assisting officer was Tomás Ó Mainín from the village. His family had a pub in the village and he asked my father if the two boys would like to come down and stay which we did. I think the bedroom was over the pub. By God! we were a wild lot! We used to go up the side of a mountain on a pony! I don’t know who owned the pony. It was probably a neighbour of the Ó Mainíns. God, we used to ride it bareback up and down the mountain every morning. I’m sure the poor pony was worn out by the two of us! We had a great time. Then, some years after that he let me down again for a holiday on my own. I think he must have thought that I had more interest in the music and the language although we all spoke Irish at home in Wicklow. Later, when I got into film making I filmed a lot around the Skelligs and the Blaskets and various places. I was even left out on the Great Blasket for five days and that made a story in itself. We didn’t go in to the island from Dún Chaoin. If the currach men had taken us in they wouldn’t have left us there. We came in at the tail-end of a bird survey called Operation Seafarer. They were doing this survey around the Blasket islands and a group of English ornithologists were out on the Tearaght doing a week-long survey out there. There was another group being led by Oscar Merne from Bray. Oscar said the time to go filming would be on the last week. So I arranged to meet Oscar down in Portmagee and we set off in this flat-bottomed speedboat more suitable to the Shannon rather than for the Atlantic! Anyway, we were kind of late going out and we had to collect these other Englishmen from the Tearaght and take them on board. They had run out of supplies and had hoped to go shopping the next day. The lads that owned the boat decided that it was a bit late to be going shopping so they left us on the Great Blasket and said they’d be back the next day to collect us. They never came! Oscar had his wife and young baby with him so we were waving nappies, and we lit fires trying to attract people who probably thought were enjoying ourselves no end! This was around 1968 or 1969. There was no ferry service to the island in those days and the only way you could get to the island was in a currach. Being experienced in going to islands I had loads of food which would have lasted us quite a long time but the Englishmen had no food so we shared our food with them. I caught a rabbit in one of the mist nets which the ornithologists weren’t too happy about as far as the net was concerned but they liked the taste of rabbit! Oscar opened a few tins of baby food and shared a few tins with the baby! The story made the papers after it was over. My wife didn’t know I was marooned until she

heard I was rescued! She was used to us going off and there were no mobile phones or anything like that so it would be normal for her not to hear from us if we were filming on an island. It was quite funny because on the particular day that we got off the island a currach came over from Dún Chaoin with two people who visited the island regularly. So it was heading back and my soundman, Pat Hayes, got into the naomhóg and he was going to go across to Dún Chaoin to try and muster some help. When the currach was halfway across the Valentia lifeboat arrived in the Sound. They had been alerted by a Shell tanker which had gone up the sound and had paid attention to the waving nappies and the screams and shouts. Pat waved to the lifeboat which collected him and then came and collected us. But the next day the headline in one of the Kerry papers was: ‘Man rescued from currach after five days at sea’ or something to that effect! I made several wildlife films around the Kerry coast, it’s a fascinating area. I made a film called A Hundred Thousand Wings for the Irish Wild Bird Conservancy and I filmed for the Natural History Unit of the BBC around the area. I’m doing a series for TG at the moment and I’ve included this area of West Kerry, looking out towards the Blaskets. The hundred thousand wings is a reference to the gannets on Little Skellig, the second largest colony of the Atlantic gannet in the world. The real big one is the Bass Rock off the UK coast. If you look at the little Skellig during the nesting season every flat is booked out. So they have to spread around. In recent years another gannetry has appeared on Ireland’s Eye, off the coast of Dublin. Gannets were part of the food chain for the coastal population and for the Blasket islanders. They captured the young gannets from the Skelligs. But the gannets were protected and if you read Ó Criomhthain’s book you can see what kind of a fight they had with the bailiffs. There was an unmerciful fight and some of the Blasket men were captured and taken in tow by these bailiffs. But they cut the rope and got away. They would have been hanged if they were captured so they went off to America. There’s an increase in the seal population along the Kerry coast. One must remember that there’s a huge population of seals in the Orkneys and seals from there come down here. If you’re a fisherman it’s no fun to see seals taking fish from your nets but illegal culls won’t make much difference because there are so many in the Orkneys. The drop in the fish stocks has prompted the seals to raid the nets. Seals were here before we were, they live on fish and we have to live alongside the seals and I doubt if bumping them off will make any difference. Kerry is getting known now for whale sightings. Once people know there’s a possibility of seeing whales they’ll be on the lookout for them. Of course, there are regular strandings of whales along the Kerry coast. I met a man one time who told me a whale had stranded on a local beach. ‘Do you know how they got rid of him’ he asked me. I said no. ‘Whalebarrows!’ came the reply.

Greta Herbs Greta McCarthy O’Brien Since childhood, growing plants has fascinated me. Writing, particularly poetry, was another passion I enjoyed from a young age. It had, however, taken a back seat in a 35 year career in horticulture and it is only in recent years I have returned to work with words! I established my herb nursery in Annascaul almost 20 years ago from where I produce and distribute a wide selection of potted herbs from March-September. Nursery growing in this wild Atlantic environment has been a constant challenge, however herb plants have proved to be far more resilient and adaptable than I ever imagined. Successfully growing breathtaking varieties such as winter savory, caraway thyme and chocolate peppermint to supply to my loyal customers is for me the ultimate reward. I am forever learning: herbs are an extensive subject! Down through the years I have tried to answer many questions on herbs from people I meet at markets, workshops, in restaurants and gardens. For people from all walks of life, herbs are an intriguing topic. In the winter of 2013 with huge encouragement from my children and time on my hands I began to write Greta's Herbs. Happily, I realised I had accumulated plenty of knowledge down through the years and thankfully I never hit writer's block. I completed the project early last year. Greta's Herbs is not a complicated textbook; it connects my story as a herb grower to the plants that I love. It features over 100 varieties, contains practical information on how to grow & extend your herb collection and shares tips on harvesting and usage. Captivating photography by Rob Beighton reveals the beauty of herbs and demonstrates step-by-step procedures such as seed sowing and potting up. 16 West Kerry Live

Two publishers showed interest but the first wanted me to get sponsorship (which proved impossible) while the second deal fell through at the last minute due to cut backs at that house. The project stood still for some time until the intervention of my friend Mary Guinan who is a gifted graphic designer based in Dublin. She generously offered her services to help move the book to the next level and much to my delight the design stage is well underway! I am now using Fundit.ie to crowdfund for printing my book for a Spring 2017 release. I offer first signed copies of the book, nature cards by Rob Beighton and higher pledge rewards such as consultations and workshops in return for pledges of support. A promo video can be viewed at http://fundit.ie/project/gretas-herbs, where you can also make a pledge! Every little bit helps!

A Doctor’s Sword: Dingle Bookshop Reading Saturday 8 October 8 pm Irish doctor Aidan MacCarthy lived in extraordinary times - he joined the RAF the day after the Second World War was declared and he survived the war, captivity and the atomic bomb. Bob Jackson wrote “A Doctor's Sword”, the book on Aidan and also produced the documentary of the same name. He will be reading and signing copies in The Dingle Bookshop, Saturday 8 October at 8pm

Come for Dinner...

The story is a compelling one of the wartime adventures of the Cork doctor who survived the evacuation at Dunkirk, burning planes, sinking ships, jungle warfare and appalling privation as a Japanese prisoner of war as well as the atomic bomb in Nagasaki. It is a story of survival, forgiveness and humanity at its most admirable.

Killorglin Tidy Towns & Killorglin Chamber Alliance

Unveiling of Railway Sculpture, Iveragh Rd., Killorglin Saturday Oct. 8th, 4.00 - 7.00pm Free Family Fun day, Sunday October 9th 2- 5pm:

who left Mid Kerry over the past centuries and decades. Statue Creation: Will Fogarty, a Limerick based Wood Carver, was commissioned to create and carve (predominantly with a chainsaw), ‘The Diaspora Lady’. The ‘Lady’ is facing south on Iveragh Rd. towards an ‘oncoming train’ from Caherciveen. She is carved in a 1940’s style as the 1940’s saw high emigration from Mid Kerry. The following lines from the recent RTE Centenary programme have been placed on a plinth, embedded in a suitcase. Permission granted by Cillian Fennell (Exec Producer Centenary). Emigration, for too many, is a bittersweet truth, The sorrow of leaving, The hope of new horizons, and the longing for home. The suitcases– also carved from the original Oak, sit on an original baggage carrier sourced from CIE. (the wood and iron works were repaired by Killorglin Tidy Towns). Community Reaction: The Community reaction to the Statue has been phenomenal. The initial adverse reaction to the removal of the tree has been counteracted by an Art installation that is considered both commemorative and evocative to the general community. The Feedback has provided a lot of talking points; • ‘Delighted a woman was carved not another man!’

The new Killorglin Railway Statue will be unveiled on Saturday, October 8th. To mark the occasion, Killorglin Chamber Alliance and Killorglin Tidy Towns are hosting a FREE Family Fun Day from 2 until 5 pm in Library Place with bouncy castles, a 1940’s jazz style disco, face- painting, a magic show, story telling, vintage cars, prizes for best dressed etc. The statue will be unveiled at 4pm - 7pm all are welcome. Background: Due to the major remedial works on Iveragh Road, Killorglin in March 2016 - A large, 150 year old Sessile Oak Tree had to be cut down as root damage made its height unsustainable. Kerry County Council agreed to keep the stump height at 20 feet, to see if Killorglin Tidy Towns could provide a plan for its use. James Daly, Killorglin Tidy Towns, undertook hours of research to see if the stump was viable and if it could be preserved; contacting several organisations such as the Botanical Gardens in Dublin, and Dublin City Council, who have a number of ‘stump’ sculptures. Based on the research and the advice received in conjunction with Kerry County Council and Killorglin Chamber Alliance, it was decided to carve a ‘Diaspora Lady’ from the stump, as the tree stood at the site of the old Railway Station. The statute commemorates all those 22 West Kerry Live

• ‘A woman , on her own, shows the vulnerability of the emigrant’ • ‘Great that a feature has been created at the exit of the town that is as iconic as the Goat at the entrance to town’ • ‘The railway – Killorglin Heritageis being recognised, at last’ • ‘The Statue will provide a clear Way - Mark when the Greenway is eventually built and will tie in the history and heritage of the town’ Thanks: This project has truly been a Community project and Killorglin Tidy Towns would like to thank a number of people that helped to complete the project: Brian Hickey - Kerry County Council, James Feely - Kerry County Council , Siobhan Griffin- Kerry County Council, Padraig Teahan – Kerry County Council, James Daly - Killorglin Tidy Towns, JJ McAuliffe - KillorglinIronworks, John Lenehan – Killorglin – Carpenter, Will Fogarty – Limerick Woodcarver, Mike Clifford – Tralee stonemason, Nuala Johnston - FEXCO, Cillian Fennell – Centenary Exec. Producer, Michael Griffin – Killorglin Electrical contractor, Gerard Costello – Killorglin – Concrete contractor, Members of the S/W Municipal Council, Killorglin

Camphill News Betsie Konink It has been quite a long time ago that we wrote about our community, there was a very busy summer in between, with holidays, young coworkers coming and going and lots of work in the garden, where we had a great harvest of berries, and vegetables. We are still getting the last small jobs finished in the new house, so that we finally will be able to move in. Also in Cois Chnoic a lot of work has been done, painting the outside of the houses, starting to clear the garden, putting up the fences which are the kind of green which could not fade fast enough, putting in fire safety equipment and doing repairs. We have started working there one day a week with those of us who will eventually move there but a lot of work still needs doing. With sadness we have to mention John Brown, who died whilst taking part in the Gold Coast Cycle Run in aid of Camphill Dingle and who was a great supporter of our community. Our sympathy goes to his wife Camilla and children.

087-4101078

A new member of our community, Dingle man Luke Graham, took for the 3th time part in the Dingle Marathon. With the assistance of 3 wheel chair pushers: his uncle Ger O’Grady and 2 friends he managed the half marathon. Congratulations!!! In the same weekend we had our annual flag days. We raised €3089.93. Thank you all for your generosity and especially all of you who gave your time to collect for us. I think we forgot to mention that the church collection in Ventry raised €80.34. Thank you all for your ongoing support.

3,053 mile Southern Tier Cycle Tomás Mac an t-Saoir My name is Tomás Mac an t-Saoir. I'm 22 years old and from Ballyferriter. On the 24th of October, I'll be embarking on a trip of a lifetime when I plan on cycling 3,053 miles across America's Southern Tier bicycle route. At 22 years young, I'm almost certain that I'll be the youngest Irish person to attempt such a journey, all on my own and unsupported , ie- I'll be carrying all my food, water and luggage on my bike. This route will see me cycle from San Diego (California) across to St Augustine (Florida). I'll be cycling through 8 different states and hope to complete this journey in 6 weeks. Trying to plan such a cycle on my own is difficult both logistically and financially, but I can't wait to get started. Why I'm doing this cycle: I've been cycling with about 4 years now, and I absolutely love it. Deciding to start cycling has been the best decision I've made in my life thus far, it really has had a huge impact on my life. Touring is always something I've had interest in, and now that I have my college course finished I thought it would be nice to embark on a life changing and soul searching cycle across America. Undertaking this trip is certainly a risk, but one that I'm willing to take. I don't see this cycle as a physical challenge, but more of a mental one. I feel as if my life needs a recharge and a bit of bike therapy should help. I'll look at this cycle as a series of day trips, as opposed to a crosscountry cycle. One rest stop to another, one day at a time, one state before the next. That’s the essential mind game. And once I land in St Augustine having ridden 3,053 miles, then I can finally say I've achieved something worthwhile with my life.

I'm doing this cycle in aid of the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Everyone in Kerry and further afield in Ireland is aware of Donal's story and the bravery and positivity he showed before he died of cancer at the age of 16. My hope is to raise €5,000 for this amazing foundation and any donations will be greatly appreciated. The mission of the Donal Walsh #LiveLife Foundation is to continue and promote the challenge of the conversation that Donal started about teenage suicide prevention and the provision of teenage facilities in care centres. Never forget, and just as Donal said, ''there is help out there, all you have to do is ask''. I wish to spread this message on both sides of the Atlantic. This cycle is also a personal tribute to the late John Browne who sadly passed away this summer. John was a member of the local Dingle Cycling Club, a regular training partner and a personal friend of mine. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.

Dingle Responds To Plastics Crisis Siobhán de Paor: Transition Towns Corca Dhuibhne Picture a plastic spoon. Stirring a take away coffee for half a second, dropped in the bin. Now see it spilling into a Kerrry - or a Chinese landfill, where it stays, slowly leaking BPA, a harmful hormone mimicing chemical, into the soil for a thousand years or more. Now imagine a similar spoon, also plastic, with a slightly different opacity. It gets the same quick dip in a similar coffee then is thrown into a brown bin and tipped into the council's compost pile. Within 12 weeks the spoon has decomposed and no contaminants mark its passing. The difference to the environment is huge, the difference in cost is minor and the shift is on. The latter is a bioplastic, fully compostable and easily available in Ireland.

A. Fazio Cloosmore,Dingle Tel: 0861706479

www.fazioartinstone.com

variety will be also circulated. Plastic is choking the world's marine eco-systems and plastic ingestion has become a leading cause of death of seabirds and mammals. Recycling is but a partial solution since most plastic can only be recycled once before degrading beyond use. This means that ultimately, almost all plastic you buy will end up in landfill or join the estimated 269,000 tonnes now floating in the world's oceans. Scientists predict, at the current rate of dumping, the levels of plastic in the sea will exceed the number of fish by 2050. Last month France became the first country to respond to the crisis enacting a legislation that will force its manufacturers of plastic tableware to use fully compostable materials by 2020. The writing is on the polystyrene wall for disposals. Relax under the Big Tree symbol this weekend.

The 'Oil to Soil' initiative being launched at the Dingle food festival under the slogan 'Be a Taster not a Waster' aims to create a plastic-free culture among Dingle businesses, encouraging people to reject plastic packaging in favour of its eco-friendly alternative. Bowls made from corn starch and cups made sugar beet fibres and cellophane made from wood pulp will be used by some of the businesses and stalls at the festival - all of which can be disposed of in the four compost bins around the town. Some will be supplied by Kerrry County Council, others will source their own from a Cork-based company, Down2Earth materials and all participants will display the Big Tree symbol to inform consumers of their effort. Volunteers from Transition Towns Corca Dhuibhne will be stationed at the compost bins and provide information on plastic pollution, food waste and composting. A petition asking retail giant Musgraves to commit to transition from petro-plastic packaging to a compostable

Dingle Bay Rovers Juniors U13s in the National Cup Last Saturday the U13s were knocked out of the National Cup by Carew Park, a premiership team from Limerick. It was a very well supported match which added to the excellent atmosphere of a cup game. We started with 1 U11 player, 5 U12s and 5 U13 players, ably captained as always by Elijah Greenan in goal. We went 1-0 up half way with quick movement out of defence and a fantastic finish by Ryan Scanlon Newstead. Excellent work by Aaron Hughes created the space and the goal and it looked like it was enough for a half time lead. But 2 minutes before the break Carew scored 2 goals, both well taken, but we could be blamed for losing concentration a bit. So instead of going in at half time with the lead we were actually one down. Determined to get back in the game senior players Robbie Sheehy (man of the match) and Kieran Bambury amongst others tried to get the goal back but Carew were too strong. The ball just wouldn’t stick in the opposition’s half and Carew went 3-1 up early in the second half. But for last gasp saves from Elijah and an off the line clearance by Danny Kavanagh we would have gone further down. The final score was 1-3 but it was a great experience and it shows the continual growth of this team that they gave such a good account for themselves against strong opposition. We wish Carew Park well in the rest of the tournament and good luck for the rest of the season. Thank you to parents Mary, Mandy and the girls for being such excellent hosts to Carew Park, and for the tidy up afterward. Upcoming Games The U12s have a home game on Saturday against Iveragh. It is their 1st game of the season so all support definitely welcome. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for kick-off time. www.facebook.com/ dinglebayroversjuniors/ The Academy (U9,U10,U11) Training has been running for our academy the last couple of weeks with coaches Gearoid, Mike and Joe up at the Pobailscoil pitch. New players are definitely welcome so please come along next Saturday at 10am. U15s are on Thursdays 6pm - 7:15pm. The Walking on Cars Experience Competition We are still running our Walking on Cars competition to fund the purchase and creation of a soccer pitch for the Juniors. An Díseart Bhí ana-oíche sa Díseart don Oíche Chultúrtha ar an 16ú Meán Fómhair. Is breá an rud an áis álainn seo a bheith ar fáil don bpobal ins gach aon slí. Táthars buíoch do Ealaín na Gaeltachta a thug cabhair airgid don ócáid.

Is í moraidhm Bhord an Díseart go mbeadh breis úinéireachta ag pobal Chorca Dhuibhne ar an Díseart, ár saibhreas oidhreachta i lár an Daingin. Ceiliúraimís í! Do chuir an scannán ar shaol agus ar shaothar Harry Clarke, Darkness in Light, a taispeánadh le linn Féile na Bealtaine 2015, iontas ar dhaoine. Níor thuig morán go dtí san go bhfuil Harry Clarke ar dhuine do na healaíontóirí Éireannacha is tábhachtaí le céad bliain anuas. Bhí saol conspóideach aige. Níor ghlac an Stát le píosa ealaíne dá chuid cé gur iad a dhíol as. Níl deireadh leis an bplé sin fós. Beidh seisiúin ealaíne le Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin sa Díseart ar an 7, 14 agus 21 Samhain. Cuirfear ana-bhéim ar shaothar Harry Clarke sna léachtaí sin. Beidh seisiún againn sa Dánlann Náisiúnta i mBÁC ar an Aoine 25 Samhain chun taispeántas Harry Clarke ansúd a fheiscint. Beidh coimeádaí sa dánlann ár dtreorú. Beidh a thuilleadh eolais ar an seisiúin seo sa chéad eagrán eile do Chorca Dhuibhne Beo. Beidh na seisiúin seo i nGaeilge a thabharfaidh deis do dhaoine a gcuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú tríd na healaíne. Turais Treoraithe Beidh turais treoraithe á dtabhairt ag Pat O’Connor le linn an Fhéile Bia – ar an nDomhnach 2 Deireadh Fómhair ag 1.00, 2.30 agus 4.00 i.n. Ní bheidh aon chostas ar na turais seo. Ceardlanna Scríbhneoireachta Tionóladh an chéad cheardlann scríbhneoireachta ar an Déardaoin 22 Meán Fómhair. Beidh an chéad ceann eile ar an gCéadaoin 12 Deireadh Fomhair ag 6.30 i.n.. Oíche bothánaíochta í seo ina bpléifear seanchas, stair, prós agus filíocht. Fáilte roimis gach éinne chuig na ceardlanna seo.

A great night was had by all in the Díseart for Culture Night on 16 September. It was wonderful to see the Díseart facilities being enjoyed by everyone. We are grateful to Ealaín na Gaeltacht for their help with the Clare Langan exhibit. Bord an Díseart would like the people of West Kerry to feel an ownership of the richness which is An Díseart. Let us celebrate this which has been handed down to us! The film on the life and work of Harry Clarke, Darkness in Light, shown during Féile na Bealtaine 2015, surprised many. It was not widely know that Harry Clarke is one of the more important Irish artists of the past 100 years. He led a controversial life. The Irish State refused to show one of his works, even though it had been commissioned by them. That debate continues. Three sessions on the history of Irish Art will be facilitated by Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin in the Diseart on 7/14/and 21 November. A visit to the National Gallery in Dublin is planned for Friday 25 November to see Harry Clarke’s work there. This will be led by one of the gallery curators.

For almost ten years now, Cuan Counselling has been delivering a free professional counselling service to our young people on the Dingle Peninsula. Counselling sessions are available on request, no questions asked, to both adolescents (from 12 to 25 years old) and their Parents (if requested), on 085 749 5054. Unlike the state services in Killarney and Tralee, Cuan Counselling is valued here in West Kerry as a local, accessible and user-friendly service - especially by secondary school students, some of whom can experience quite intense suffering from depression and other stresses, leading at times to the risk of thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Cuan Counselling Chairman Rochie Holohan has today confirmed that “this year, through the summer months, we have been exceptionally busy, with a greater than ever number of our young people seeking out our services”. “This has meant that our funds have been stretched to the limit,” he said, “We need money, and we need it now, … to keep our local services going and to develop new preventative initiatives.” Rochie explained that Cuan Counselling was starting to collate data from their counselling work, total confidentiality will remain absolutely guaranteed. “This data will allow us to identify trends in the issues causing such difficulties and suffering among some of our adolescents. Funds allowing, we are determined to pro-actively work with these young people to pre-empt and prevent these problems before they arise, to lessen any suffering.” “However,” he added, “these preventative initiates will cost money too.” At present, it costs just over €36,000 a year to run the Cuan Counselling service - the HSE and Tusla chip in about 40% of that; over €20,000 has to be funded by local donations and contributions. So many of the public in West Kerry have organised events and fundraisers for Cuan Counselling. “I trust we have been gracious in saying “thank you” to them and that we have properly acknowledged corporate donations”.

ACTIVE 55’S FITNESS COURSE AT WK FITNESS CLASSES TAKE PLACE EVERY MONDAY AND FRIDAY AT 9AM

Exercise is of vital importance to people who are aged in their fifties & over! We have highlighted some of the benefits below! To date we have experienced fantastic results with some of our older members, these include a reduction in back pain/stiffness, reduction in shoulder & hip pain/stiffness, increased flexibility, reduced blood pressure. One member in particular is completely free of osteoporosis a couple of months into her basic strength program!

Here are some benefits of physical exercise for older folks:

“It’s quite humbling to see so many giving us such help”, Rochie noted, “And, yet, we are again appealing urgently for more financial help, what else can we do? We need money now! We are determined to keep and grow this local service.” Cuan Counselling is asking that, once again, people organise a fund-raising event, … or include Cuan Counselling among the beneficiaries of other events. Also, the Directors are asking people to consider making a personal donation - to become a “Friend of Cuan” by making a once-off payment or by signing a twelve-month standing order for €5.00, €10.00, €20.00 or more! In the wake of some recent scandals in the charity sector, the five Directors guarantee that every single penny will be spent on counselling sessions or necessary costs. None of the Directors accept any

It was like olden times with pens put down the evening before and sheep arriving in the village early in the morning. There was a great buzz around the place all day long and the place really filled with laughter and excitement when the children arrived off the school bus in the evening for the Fancy Dress Parade and the Pet show in O’Dwyers yard. A cute ram lamb named chops held by his owner Sonny Flaherty, Derrymore was the winner of the Pet Show. The Parade around the village was led by our own local musicians Milo O Brien and James Allman and Camp children and the costumes were fantastic, again even the ICA ladies got dressed up for the occasion. And one pen of sheep stood out on the day, themed Star Wars alias Camp Wars was the artistic creation of Breda Quirke, Anne Eager and Eileen O Shea and needless to say it won a prize. Paddy Kennedy, Maum and New York sold the first pen of sheep on the fair morning. Milo O’Brien’s pen of sheep was judged the Best overall of the day. As aways the sheep show attracted a lot of entries and the winners of the overall champion sheep was Pat O’Donnell, Slieve who was presented with the John O’Shea Memorial Cup by Pat O Shea. Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service Donations to charity Question I make regular donations to charity. Can I claim tax back on my donations? Answer The tax code provides for tax relief for “eligible charities” and other “approved bodies” including schools and educational institutions. Revenue lists bodies that have been granted a charitable tax exemption on its website.

If you are willing to allow the charity claim a refund on your donation, you need to fill out a form - either an “Annual Certificate” (CHY4) for

Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

If you make a donation of at least €250 to an eligible charity, tax relief on your donation is allowed to the charity rather than to you (the donor). Cash donations made in instalments, such as by standing order, also qualify. The charity can claim a refund of tax on your donation at the end of the tax year. Relief is granted to the charity at a blended rate of 31% rather than the rate you actually pay. The donor is not entitled to a repayment of any part of the tax that has been repaid to the charity. The amount repaid to a charity for any tax year cannot be more than the amount of tax actually paid by the donor for that year. For example, if your income tax liability for 2015 is €350 (which you have paid), the repayment to the charity is restricted to that amount. The

Peripheral Vascular Disease Symptoms Eddie O’ Grady The most common symptom of peripheral vascular disease in the legs is pain in one or both calves, thighs, or hips; usually while walking etc. This is because the leg muscles’ demand for blood increases during exercise. The narrowed or blocked arteries cannot supply the extra blood, depriving the muscles of oxygen and other nutrients. The pain usually stops at rest, and is called intermittent (comes and goes) claudication. It is usually a dull, cramping pain but may also present as heaviness, tightness, or tiredness in the leg muscles. With more severe blockage of the blood vessels in the lower extremities, leg pain at night is common. To ease this, individuals often hang their feet down over the bed. This allows blood to flow passively to the distal parts of the legs, relieving the pain somewhat. Other symptoms of peripheral vascular disease include the following: • Buttock pain • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs • Burning or aching pain in the feet or toes while resting • Loss of hair on the legs • One / both legs or feet feel cold or change colour (pale, bluish, dark reddish) • Impotence • Presence of non-healing wound on affected lower extremity • Diminished or absent pulses in the affected leg or foot • Presence of thickened toenails • Gangrene • Shrinking calf muscles

Diagnostic Testing Non-invasive testing: 1. Pulse examination: This is the primary assessment of the circulation. 2. Arterial blood pressures: Using an ultrasound stethoscope (Doppler), the blood pressure in your arms and legs is measured , and the pressures are compared. This test gives the vascular surgeon a generalized assessment of the severity of the lower extremity arterial disease. 3. Duplex Scanning: This test is useful for detecting blockages in an artery and measuring the size of the artery. It may also be used to measure the size of a vein that may be used as a bypass, a means of re-routing blood flow around a blocked or occluded area. 4. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) or Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA): This test is also useful for imaging extremity vessels. Invasive testing: Angiogram: This test is the most helpful imaging study used to direct treatment of symptomatic lower extremity arterial disease. Dye is injected directly into the artery and special 52 West Kerry Live

x-rays are taken to reveal the exact location of the arterial blockage. An angiogram is only necessary when interventional or surgical treatment is being considered. Medical Management While atherosclerosis cannot be totally cured or prevented, the progression of the disease can be controlled through risk factor modification. • Smoking: Avoid • High blood pressure: Reduce by exercise/diet and/or medication • Diet: The risk of atherosclerosis can also be reduced a healthy balanced unprocessed food diet. • Exercise: Measurable improvement ranged from 80-234% in controlled studies that incorporated a regular walking program into the daily routine. A regular walking program of 45-60 minutes/day is recommended. • Diabetes: Early treatment and meticulous management is paramount to controlling the effects of diabetes on arteries. • Foot care: When blood flow to the lower extremities is decreased, delayed healing of sores, serious infections, and gangrene (tissue death) of the feet or toes can occur after seemingly minor injuries (e.g. hang-nail, superficial laceration). Care must be given to avoid any situation that might cause injury to the foot. Inspect your feet daily. Immediately report to your physician the detection of any foot injuries or sores. • Pharmacologic therapy: In addition to others prescribed by your physician, the following medications may be added to your regimen: 1. Anti-Platelet Agents - These drugs decrease the overall risk of heart attacks (angina, myocardial infarction) or strokes (cerebrovascular accidents or transient ischemic attacks) in persons with atherosclerosis. They also may improve walking distance by enhancing blood flow and overall circulation. Two examples of anti-platelet agents are: • Aspirin • Clopidogrel bisulfate (Plavix®) 2. Anticoagulation Agents - These drugs inhibit clot formation • Lovenox • Warfarin(Coumadin) 3. Other Agents - These medications improve the circulation in the lower extremity. •

Pletal

Surgical and Endovascular Management In cases where diligent medical therapy is not sufficient surgery should be considered. Once the area of arterial blockage is determined, two treatments options are possible; angioplasty with stenting or open surgery. An angioplasty is when small balloon is used

www.westkerrylive.ie

to dilate a plaque narrowed area of an artery. The balloon is then inflated; smashing the plaque that was inhibiting blood flow. Stents are frequently used in combination with angioplasty to optimize the results. The stents hold the arterial vessel open and trap the plaque against the arterial wall. If there is too much blockage in the arteries, an open bypass operation must be undertaken. Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. (hons.) M.I.A.P.T. Covering Dingle, Killarney & Tralee 086-7700191

Spilling The Beans On Beans! Irene Ní Fhlannúra If you were to put health claims on the label of a can of beans - it would read something like this: reduces cholesterol, lowers risk of heart disease, lowers risk of prostate, colorectal and breast cancer, helps regulate sugar imbalances associated with type 2 diabetes, hypoglycaemia and metabolic syndrome. Yet the humble bean is often overlooked in modern day cooking. However, if you put the same health claims on a bottle of pills there is no doubt they would be the best thing since sliced pan (which, incidentally, was not such a great move after all!). The health benefits associated with beans, and indeed other legumes such as peas and lentils come from the incredible variety of nutrients they provide. Legumes are a staple food all over the world and are one of the best sources of soluble fibre. They are low in fat and high in good quality protein a great health-saving combination, and this is only the beginning! Most legumes share are rich sources of folate, manganese, B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorous, calcium, iron, copper and antioxidants. Soybeans are particularly famed for plant sterols which help reduce cholesterol and for isoflavones involved with minimizing effects of menopause. However, all beans contain these features in larger or lesser amounts, depending on the bean. The spotlight is back on folate (folic acid) for women thinking of conceiving and in pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in babies – black beans and lentils are the best dietary source of this valuable nutrient. The soluble fiber in beans helps lower levels of damaging LDL cholesterol in the blood, thus lowering heart-disease risk. The old rhyme “beans, beans are good for the heart” still rings true! By slowing down carbohydrate absorption, soluble bean fibre fends off unwanted peaks and lows in blood glucose levels -- especially valuable to people with diabetes. Soluble fibre is also needed to bind to toxins in the body and safely remove them via the bowel. Beans also provide substantial insoluble fiber, which can keep constipation and other digestive woes away. Both insoluble and soluble fibre are lacking in the modern diet with most adults failing to reach even 50% of the recommended daily amount! However a bowl of beans or lentils daily provide just about half your daily needs of both types of fibre and would go a long way to keeping the nation a whole lot healthier in the long run! Beans are also the dieter’s best friend by creating a sense of fullness and keeping hunger at bay. The low glycaemic index of beans help reduce sugar cravings and the roller-coaster ride that fol54 West Kerry Live

With the Dingle Food Festival upon us, who wouldn’t want to be full of beans! Best wishes to the Festival and a big hearty welcome to all those visiting Dingle over the weekend! Enjoy!

lows the consumption of carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. A great way to kick start your weight loss plan is to substitute these type of carbohydrates with beans, peas or lentils. Combined with wholegrains, beans can offer an equal amino acid profile as animal protein, but without the same cost to the animals, our health and environment.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic & Healing Rooms, Dingle 066 9151360. Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com

Many people are wary of the “explosive” reputation that beans have gained, namely the increase in flatulence. “the more you eat them, the more you fart” or so the rhyme goes! However, this is often a temporary side-effect. An increase in the type of fibre that beans provide often leads to more gas being produced but as the digestive system gets used to breaking down this fibre it does not cause long term gas problems. Also, it is important that beans are soaked and cooked properly. Soaking dried beans for 12-24 hours before cooking will significantly reduce the wind factor because they begin to germinate which naturally breaks down some of the indigestible fibres attributed to gas. Another tip is to add 2-3 strips of kombu (kelp) seaweed to the cooking water as this improves digestibility and adds flavour. If problems persist, try a digestive enzyme such as papaya or bromelain to help reduce gas.

• Personal Nutrition Plans for Weight Loss, Energy, Recovery & Health • FITFOOD for Weight Loss – Women and Mens Groups start in October • Food Intolerance Tests, Candida, Stool Analysis, Chronic Inflammation and Genetic Testing available.

With many of us keeping to tight budgets, filling up on healthy beans is a good way to stay healthy and make the euros stretch. This is particularly good news for families and indeed students moving away to college. Beans are delicious in soups, stews, curries, casseroles, warm salads and dips. They are versatile and cheap, even the canned versions but look out for sugar and salt content in the canned varieties. Organic canned beans tend to have reduced or no salt and no added sugar making them a must-have item in your cupboard.

Murphy Beds in John Benny’s. John Benny’s Pub in Dingle will host Eamon O’Leary and Jefferson Hamer AKA The Murphy Beds on Thursday October 6th at 9.30 pm It promises to be a fantastic night of traditional and original folk songs with close harmonies and deft instrumental arrangements on bouzouki, guitar, and mandolin. The Murphy Beds have performed and collaborated with artists across the folk spectrum including Beth Orton, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Anais Mitchell, and Sam Amidon. Eamon started playing Irish music while growing up in Dublin through his friendship with the Mayock family from County Mayo. When he moved to New York City he immersed himself in the city’s traditional music scene and travelled widely, performing with many of the great players in Irish music. Jefferson is a guitarist and singer based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2013, in addition to The Murphy Beds, he and songwriter Anais Mitchell released Child Ballads, a collection of new adaptations of English and Scottish folk songs which won a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. Jefferson and Eamon have long had friends in Dingle and are both superb singers and players - this is a must see treat for all lovers of songs ! (Expect some guests too!!)
