Farming News FUTURE PROOFING OUR RURAL COMMUNITIES – FARMING CONFERENCE NEWKD and The IFA jointly host a conference, Future Proofing our Rural Communities: Keeping them Vibrant and Sustainable, in the Brandon Hotel Tralee, 8pm November 29th. This conference takes place at a time when Farm Families faces many challenges. Brendan Tuohy (Former Secretary General Department of Communications, Marine, Energy and Natural Resources.) will highlight this modern-day context, and options which farmers can pursue to enhance their quality of lives. Brendan will also highlight work being undertaken through some of the Dingle Hubs innovations. Thomas Ryan IFA (Environment Executive) will highlight modern farming within literally a changing environment, SMART technology, and look forward to CAP post 20/21. Ian O'Shea (Netfeasa, Dingle) will highlight current SMART technologies in use, and benefits to efficiencies on the farm. David Trant (Teagasc) will highlight preparations and best practices for Departmental inspections of farms. This event has Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Knowledge Transfer status, and we wish to thank all our colleagues in Skillsnet, Teagasc, Dingle Hub, Netfeasa, Dept of Agriculture, IFA, Kerry Group, Farmers Journal, Lee Strand, Pobal, Farmers Journal, and NEWKD for making it possible. More information from NEWKD 0667142788. Those who wish to attend will be especially by the calibre and abilities of the main speakers. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the evening. RE-OPENING OF THE ORGANIC FARMING SCHEME The Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) with immediate effect. The OFS is a scheme under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 to support organic production on Irish farms. This scheme will help farmers in their conversion to organic farming and will allow them to avail of the growing market opportunities that clearly exist for organic food. The Irish organic sector is one which continues to go from strength to strength. I expect to be receiving the Organic Strategy Report by the end of the year which will set out the development of the Strategy to 2025, as follows:
documentation such as Nutrient Management Plans, Commonage Management Plans, Rare Breed or Low Emission Spreading to engage with their GLAS agent and ensure that it is submitted as quickly as possible in order to receive payment. In order to facilitate farmers who wish to contact the Department in relation to their GLAS payments, extended hours are now in place for the GLAS Helpline. The Helpline can be contacted at 076 106 4451 For the period from 19 to 22 November and 26 to 29 November, participants can call the Helpline between 9.00am and 7.30pm on weekdays and between 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday 17 and 24 November 2018. 5 MILLION BROADLEAF TREES TO BE PLANTED IN IRELAND THIS YEAR UNDER NATIONAL FORESTRY PROGRAMME The Afforestation Scheme is the cornerstone of the Department of Agriculture’s policy to develop a sustainable forest sector that delivers economic, environmental and social benefits to society. The planting of native woodlands so far in 2018 has exceeded 300 hectares, representing a 130% increase on the first year of our Forestry Programme in 2015. Last year over 13,000 farmers across the country received nearly €68 million in forestry premium payments and €25m revenue from timber sales. Farmers are encouraged to consider forestry as part of the farming mix, an opportunity to diversify the income stream and a means of increasing production of under-utilised land. Applications are now invited under the Scheme under which 100% of the costs of establishment are covered by the Department and 15 guaranteed annual premium payments are also available. The national forest estate is still expanding and has now reached 11% of the total land area, with a wide variety of forest types present. The total forest area has increased from 697,842 hectares (ha) in 2006 ha to 770,020 ha in 2017.
• Copies of the Organic Farming Scheme terms and conditions are available on from the Department of Agriculture, on request.
Broadleaved species account for 28.7% of the total forest area. The share of broadleaf species in the national forest estate has increased by 3% between 2013 and 2017. 26% of all trees planted so far in 2018 were broadleaves. Almost 900 ha of broadleaves have been planted during this time. As a % of total forest cover by county, Meath has the largest broadleaf cover in the country at 72%, it also the highest % of forests in private ownership at 76% of all forests in the county. The highest annual premium payable under the afforestation scheme is for native woodlands and is €275/acre or €680/hectare payable each year for 15 years. The Department has introduced a Woodland Environmental Fund that provides an access point for business to further incentivise land owners to plant Native Woodland. Under this new initiative business provide a once off top up payment of €1,000/ha to the landowner. 100% of the cost of establishing the new forest is covered by the grant paid by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Forestry is compatible with other agriculture schemes. Farmers can continue to receive their Basic Payment on land which is also planted. Forestry and GLAS can exist side by side on the same farm once land parcels being considered for forestry do not have GLAS activities associated with them. Agro forestry is available under the afforestation scheme for farmers who wish to continue to graze the land while also growing trees on the same land. The planting of poplar or eucalyptus for fuel is a good option for farmers who want a quick return on their forestry investment. Forests planted under this Scheme can be felled after 10-15 years and a premium payment of up to €520 / hectare is payable for each year up to harvesting at year 15. Timbers sales from private forest owners were estimated at over €25m last year. A recent change in taxation rules means that income from forestry clear-felling is tax free.
GLAS ADVANCE PAYMENTS 2018 ISSUED
N & P STATEMENTS JANUARY TO OCTOBER 2018 NOW AVAILABLE
Since the end of last week, advance payments (worth 85% of your total annual payment) for GLAS began. The first pay run saw over €116m paid to over 33,000 participants under the scheme. This payment is two weeks earlier than last year and sees an additional 7,000 participants paid in the initial tranche compared to last year. When added to other payments. This GLAS payment, brings the total issued to Irish farmers in the last six weeks to some €1.1 billion. This is a significant boost to on-farm cash flows and once again marks Ireland at the forefront of EU member states in making advance payments on this scale. There will be weekly GLAS pay runs from next week and he urged farmers with outstanding 12 West Kerry Live
The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements for the period January to October 2018 are now available. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine also reminds farmers that nitrates records for the movement of organic fertiliser, temporary movement of animals during the year or short term
• The Organic Farming Scheme is an agri-environment measure under the Department's Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. The Scheme is co-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. • Farmers enter into a contract for a minimum of five years, with standard rate payments of up to €220 per hectare a year during the conversion period and up to €170 per hectare when they have achieved full organic status. • Higher payment rates are available for organic horticultural and tillage farmers • Latest figures indicate that there are now some 72,000 hectares under organic production, an increase of nearly 50% on the position at the start of the Programme in 2014. • Closing date for applications will be 19 December, 2018. Applications for the scheme must be made online, and there will be no requirement to use an Agricultural Advisor to make the application

rental grazing agreements (Records 3,4, 5 Forms) must be submitted on or before 31 December 2018. Completed forms should be e-mailed to nitrates@agriculture.gov.ie or posted to Nitrates Section, DAFM, Johnstown Castle Estate, Co Wexford. These forms are particularly important for farmers wishing to avail of such agreements in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations. Only Records received before the deadline can be taken in to account when calculating the nitrate levels for 2018. DINGLE ENERGY PLAN SURVEY This is a local survey that will help assess the needs and requirements of the local community. Like many such methodologies, it’s not seismic or rocket science, but there is an element of science to it. Therefore, if you are participating in it, you should be careful to answer the questions correctly, as false answering will through up false results. Some of the questions may throw you off, such as your name, address and contact detail. This seems only to be an opportunity to put your name into a drew for €400, but if you feel that you’re not that lucky, or are just lucky enough not to need any extra cash, you can leave that section blank. You are asked for your MPRN, which is your Meter Point Reference Number, a unique 11-digit which tells your exact location of the Eirgrid network. Another acronym is BER, the “building energy rating” of your home, which indicated the energy efficiency level of the building. The rest of the questions are easy, size and type of building, square footage and age, heating system & fuel expenditure, insulation used, attic usage, utilization of renewable technologies, and finally type of vehicle and fuel use. You may not like these types of surveys, many don’t, but if you have no objection, you could give five minutes to complete it. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Our new website is now live so please visit www.dinglehub.com and you’ll find information on the many projects underway. One of the projects is the Dingle Peninsula Energy Master Plan to determine how much energy we are currently using and then provide an energy efficiency roadmap for the Peninsula. As a community, we will need to provide information in relation to our current energy usage for this master plan and you will find the link www.dinglehub.com/survey on the front page of our new website. It is very important that people get involved to help build an accurate picture of the energy we use today. To ensure the best results from this work, we need at least 500 responses covering the entire Peninsula up to and including Blennerville and Castlemaine. Please see the advert in this issue for further details. We are excited to share that we are expanding the team at the Dingle Hub. As part of our focus on the Marine and Environment, we have established a Dingle Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) program aimed at identifying the opportunities and employment skills required as Ireland makes the transition to a low carbon society. To help drive this program we are adding two completely new roles as Energy Coach Training Coordinators to be part of our team. As the Hub grows, It is important to us
to support people from our own community or people looking to move back to Dingle including and those who may wish to upskill/change their career path. The Coordinators will manage, design and deliver training programs in support of the SEC, so this is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in terms of the future sustainability of the Dingle Peninsula. We are delighted to be partnering with Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) who will support the training delivered. If you, or any of your family or friends are interested, a detailed job spec is available on www.dinglehub.com/vacancies. Join us on 30th November for Dingle’s first Founder Friday event at 5:30pm in Adams Bar. Founder Friday is a free meet-up for Start-ups, Founders & Entrepreneurs over drinks & nibbles and is sponsored by Bank of Ireland. It’s a chance to finish the week with a few drinks, network with like-minded people and also hear an inspiring chat from an entrepreneur in the Kerry community. This month we have Mike Fitzgerald of Net Feasa as our guest speaker. To register, please visit www.dinglehub.com/events. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more.

Roast Sweet Potato, Red Onion and Goats Cheese Tart Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This tart is easy to make and should be a crowd pleaser. You can use this as a lunch or as a light evening meal. The flavour of roast sweet potato, cooked red onion and melted goats cheese is such a great combination. If you are looking for a delicious goats cheese why not try St Tola or Galway goat, they are creamy and will work perfectly for this. If you love these flavours and want to create new dishes, why not cook them in the same way and then make a salad from them or add them to a quiche. Ingredients 6 medium red onions, finely sliced 5 tbsp red wine vinegar 2/3 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 tsp. chilli flakes 1 sheet puff pastry 200g soft goat's cheese with rind, broken into large chunks beaten egg, for glazing rapeseed oil salt and pepper
Call for Appoinment: 087 0921480 Method Heat oven to 200ºC. Put the sweet potatoes in a bowl and toss with some oil, salt, pepper and the chilli flakes. Place these on a tray and place in the oven for about 20 minutes, turning halfway, until softened and lightly browned. Leave to cool. Meanwhile, put a pan over low-medium heat, add a little oil and add the sliced onions and pinch of salt. Cook this for about 10 minutes. Add a little vinegar and simmer for a few minutes. Reduce the oven to 180ºC. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment and unroll the pastry sheets on this. Leaving a 2cm gap around the edge, spread the onions over the pastry, then top with the sweet potatoes and goat’s cheese. Brush the beaten egg around the border of the pastry and bake in the oven for 35-40 mins or until the pastry is golden and crisp. Enjoy!!!

Your “Other Vices” Guide to keep your Sparkle this Season! Irene Ní Fhlannúra It might seem a tad early but Christmas is coming, and the goose is getting fat - or so the old rhyme goes. It is not only the goose that gets fat for Christmas but according to the statistics, on average we are likely to gain anywhere from two to ten pounds of fat over the next few weeks. Despite good intentions, the holiday season signals “red alert” for the health conscious as clean living meets party season head on! While Dingle gets ready to host another weekend of Other Voices magic, prepare yourself ahead of the “Other Vices” that may well have you feeling less than jolly by the year end. A few timely strategies will go a long way to limit some of the health risks associated with this time of the year and minimize the damage that can literally knock the stuffing out of us. Traditional Christmas food, as it was in the old days, was in fact a rather healthy affair of game or poultry, winter vegetables, dried fruit, nuts, herbs and spices. These foods are not only healthier than the processed imitations but are in tune with Winter eating patterns, providing the most appropriate nourishment for this time of the year. Most of the weight gained during the holidays comes from processed foods, both savoury and sweet as well as alcohol. The wholesomeness of the traditional fare allows us to indulge a little, feel sated and know when to stop unlike much of the junk aimed at the Christmas table, laden with toxic fats, sugar and chemicals, which keep us wanting more. Get into the real spirit of Christmas and enjoy the wonderful, evocative aromas and taste of oldstyle seasonal cooking. In times past, digestion was helped along with apertifs (before a meal) and digestifs (after meals). This tradition still remains although many of the healthful aspects have been replaced with gimmicky ingredients. An apertif helps whet the appetite and stimulate the necessary enzymes and acid for good digestion. Typically, the apertif was a dry, bitter alcohol drink but can also be made from bitter herbs such as gentian, dandelion, nettles, horseradish, watercress, parsley, coriander and arugula to name a few. The bitter component of these herbs stimulate the liver and gallbladder necessary for healthy digestion. A herbal version of the apertif is known as Swedish Bitters (or Digestive Bitters) and is particularly good for dealing with heavy, fat laden meals - very typical at this time of the year. Almost everyone has experienced bloating, flatulence and/or indigestion after a heavy meal. These symptoms can be avoided most of the time by eating less and chewing more but sometimes we may need something extra. After dinner fortified liquors such as "Creme de Menthe" were very trendy one time and were not too far from the original digestif. Peppermint, fennel, caraway and aniseed are known as carminative herbs which relieve bloating and wind following a big meal. These herbs are more effective as teas or pure herbal juices than anything you will find in the liquor aisle! Another vice that leaves us worse for wear is the Christmas tipple. There are countless suggestions for curing a hangover but without addressing the true cause - toxicity and dehydration - many people unwittingly prolong their symptoms. A breakfast of easily digestible fruits, some milled seeds or oats for fibre and plenty of fluids will aid the body's recovery by promoting detoxification and rehydration. Ditch the highly-salted, fat laden full Irish Breakfast if you want to a quick end to your hangover! Herbal teas such as ginger, mint and licorice not only soothe a queasy stomach but also help to rehydrate the body after a long night. Coconut water and electrolytes replace lost fluids and also replenish minerals lost through over-indulging. Alkalizing indigestion remedies such as slippery elm and gentian may also be beneficial. Milk thistle is a trusted remedy for liver support and protection from alcohol, environmental toxins and prescription drugs which can be taken over the next few weeks or so. Dandelion root, cleavers and burdock also offer support to the liver and detoxification pathways. If you are already taking medication, do check with your GP/pharmacist for interactions. The skin is a major route for eliminating toxins so a brisk dry-brushing followed by a tepid shower or bath using essential oils or natural salts will also speed up recovery in time for the next night out! Whatever you are planning this festive season, plan ahead and you just 20 West Kerry Live

It was sad that girls couldn't drink that time. The best thing that ever happened was that a girl could go with her boyfriend and have a drink.
•
At the dance in Jamie's Hall in Cloghane the parish priest would ask you how old you were - you had to be a certain age or he'd call you out from the altar at Sunday Mass. Myself and my friend were underage, so we sneaked in to the dance under all the coats hanging on the wall to get past him. We left the same way. He caught my friend one time and said if she was lying about her age he'd call her out from the altar. He checked the baptismal records for your date of birth (GDPR how are you!)
•
The priest would roam around with his stick and shine a torch into the bushes after the dance.
•
After going to Pookies Lane we went to Tip's for chips.
•
If a priest saw a boy and a girl walking home together on the road he'd separate them and take the girl home himself.
•
It was different when I went abroad - I worked in Canada, america and England and I had a boyfriend in every country.

Remember your small contribution could make a HUGE difference. Hoping to see you on the night. Congratulations: A huge congratulations to Beaufort who advanced to the Munster Final of the Junior Championship last Saturday with another comprehensive victory over their opponents. Time To Hit The Diff! The inaugural Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne/West Kerry Tractor Run will take place this weekend, Sunday 25th of November, in aid of two very deserving charities, Gairdín Mhuire Day Care Centre and the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association. To kickstart the fundraising in style, Colm Murphy and family, Tubber, are generously donating the proceeds from the sale of a five star Speckled Park in-calf heifer to the cause. Anyone in the market for a top quality animal are most welcome to Dingle Mart on Saturday 24th November to bid for her. A group of hardy volunteers will be at various locations around Dingle town on Saturday with collection buckets. They will also be selling raffle tickets (a bargain at 3 for €5) for the monster raffle which will take place at the evening of ceol and craic in the Marina Inn on Saturday night. There are fantastic top quality prizes to be won, including extremely generous vouchers from local businesses, beautiful artworks, jewellery, food and craft hampers. If you’re not in you can’t win! A not to be missed auction will also take place on the Saturday night in The Marina Inn. Top of the list is a gorgeous bespoke handcrafted table by Micky Fitzgerald of Dingle Men’s Shed. The Dingle Men’s Shed, which is a great amenity for the local area, have kindly donated the table to the tractor run and the money made at auction for the table will be split between the tractor run charities and the Men’s shed. Our capable auctioneer, Peter Fenton, will also be putting many other covetable items under the hammer. These include a Geelong Cats jersey signed by the current team (many thanks to Mark O Connor), a beautiful vase crafted and donated by Sean Daly of Dingle Crystal worth €250, a Liam O’ Neill framed print, a football signed by the 5 in a row All-Ireland winning Kerry minor team, a boxed lamb for the freezer and a hurley signed by Joe Canning. It promises to be a great night and provides an opportunity to do all your Christmas shopping at the same time! Anyone unable to make it on the night can place a bid on any item by private messaging through the Facebook page (@wktractorrun) or by contacting John (087 2809801) or Sharon (0874119583).

Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
Supports/ Infrastructure
Ireland has set itself the target of ending the sale of cars powered by fossil fuels by 2030. The proposed ban on petrol and diesel means cars powered by only petrol and diesel, so hybrids and plugin hybrids will continue to be sold after that date.
There is a grant which takes up to €5,000 off the initial purchase price of the electric car, and VRT relief up to €5,000. The Government has announced a new grant of €600 towards the installation of a home charger unit from 1 January 2018. The grant will be administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
There is still the perception that the expense of hybrid and electric cars are beyond the range of the average driver, but this is not entirely true. The price of manufacturing, particularily the cost of battery prices, has come down considerably and that coupled with government incentives such as low taxes and grants and low running costs make them alot more affordable than you might think.
There are 1,400 charge points between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. These have been set up by the ESB e car units on an all Ireland basis. With one electric car access card you can use any of the charger access points throughout the country. If there is an issue such as a cable gets blocked the system can unblock the cable. The ESB from the start decided to install a standard electric charge point in every town with 1,500 people or more.
Many global cities are switching their public transportation and service vehicles over to hybrid cars and buses in order to cut their carbon emissions and long term operational costs.
The ESB has a 24-hour call centre in Cork, and there are maintenance teams, response units if anyone breaks down. The charge points can all be operated remotely now – one card for all of Ireland – and in the near future the plan is to have an app that lets you know not just where the nearest charge points on, but whether it is currently in use.
Pros of Hybrid and Electric Cars Can reduce your transport fuel costs significantly in comparison to a comparable diesel engine car. A reduction in price of up to €10,000 is available for electric vehicles due to an SEAI grant and zero VRT. There are currently over 1100 public charging points installed in Ireland by ESB around the towns and cities of Ireland. A fast charge station at a motorway takes approximately 20 minutes to charge a car to 80% capacity and this is currently free.

The three main concerns people cite when it comes to their reluctance to buy EVs and Hybrid's come under: performance, range and cost.

Performance wise, EV’s and Hybrid vehicles are matching their fuel counterparts. Range is still an issue for some people, but this is continuously improving as the technology develops, for hybrid's range anxiety isn't a problem as you don’t need to use a charging point because hybrids charge up their own batteries. Most strong hybrids will have a choice of power modes, too, ranging from eco to power, enabling the driver to choose maximum efficiency or performance depending on the driving conditions. Driving a hybrid is similar to driving a conventional automatic car, so there’s little compromise on performance.

Cost will remain an issue, until cost parity is reached somewhere between 2020 and 2025. In terms of running costs, the electric car and Hybrid's are already far ahead of cars powered by the internal combustion engine. Many people charge their electric car overnight and, at night time rates, the cost works out to be between 10 and 15% of the cost of petrol. Even when people charge at the daytime rate for electricity, it works out to be about 25% of the cost of petrol.

Tips For Winter Driving Taking a number of simple precautions can ensure safety on Irish roads during winter. There are a number of simple precautions the RSA advises for driving over the winter months: Check your tyres...they are your only contact with the road. Tyres should be at least the minimum legal thread depth of 1.6mm but need to be changed before they get this worn. Tyres need to be to the correct tyre pressure to give the motorist the best chance in extreme conditions. Use your lights. As we come into the winter months, motorists are advised to use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. Headlights and taillights should be in working order. Understand your brakes. Check your car manual and find out if your vehicle has safety assist technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Learn how these technologies can assist your driving in harsh weather conditions.
winter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult to see. Watch out for sheltered/ shaded areas on roads, under trees and near high walls.
•
Appropriate footwear in case you need to leave your vehicle e.g. boots
•
A hazard warning triangle
•
Spare wheel (Check that your spare wheel is in good condition and is fully inflated. Some cars may have an inflation repair kit instead of a spare wheel. Make sure that you know how to use it.)
•
Tow Rope
•
A shovel
•
De-icing equipment (for glass and door locks)
Keep up to date. Listen to local weather and traffic reports. Pay heed to the weather warnings alerting drivers of unsafe and dangerous driving conditions.
•
Spare bulbs
•
First aid kit
•
A fire extinguisher
Be prepared. During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car.
•
A working torch
•
A car blanket, additional clothing & some food and water
In the event of a breakdown. Drivers need to ensure their vehicle is well in off the road so as not to obstruct other vehicles. The driver should also put on their hazard warning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on the motorway pull in as far as you can, alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights. The driver should leave their vehicle, get behind the barrier (on the embankment) and call the Gardaí, on their mobile phone or roadside telephone.
•

Safe Distance. It takes longer to stop a car during the winter weather so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. Make sure you can clearly see. All too often motorists do not de-fog or de-ice windows and mirrors which can compromise visibility. This winter ensure windows and mirrors are clear, and carry a de-icer and screen scraper. Do not use boiling water as this can crack the windscreen. Beware of “Black Ice”. Black Ice is one of

Since 17 April 2016 there are now 63 road traffic offences that attract penalty points Any driver accumulating 12 penalty points within any given three-year period will be automatically disqualified from driving for six months. A lower threshold of 7 penalty points leading to disqualification applies to any driver taking out a first learner permit on or after 1 August 2014 while he or she drives under any learner permit and subsequently during the first two years while he or she is driving under a full driving licence. The driver is required to surrender his/her Irish or foreign driving licence to the National Driver Licence Service within 10 days of disqualification commencing. It is an offence not to surrender a licence. It is also an offence to drive while disqualified. Penalty points remain on the licence record for a period of three years. Important Advice Before Buying A Used Car 1. Never, ever, buy a car without getting it independently checked by a qualified mechanic.. Ensure the mechanic is properly qualified and independent from the seller.
For commercial vehicles go to: www.cvrt.ie 6. If you are importing a used vehicle from the UK, make sure to check its odometer and test history first by visiting https://www. check-mot.service.gov.uk/ and entering the UK registration number and vehicle make.
2. Always carry out a comprehensive history check through official vehicle record holders (e.g. Motorcheck, Cartell, myvehicle.ie, Carhistorycheck etc.). This can show if a vehicle has been written off, clocked or if it has outstanding finance.
7. What may seem like a bargain at the time, can end up costing you more in the long term with expensive replacement parts and labour. A qualified mechanic should be able to identify worn or dangerous parts. Also check the vehicle’s service history for regular maintenance.
3. The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) started printing the odometer history on the NCT Cert and the current reading on the disc from July 2014. So ask to see the Cert/disc and compare with the reading on the car now. If the prior odometer reading is more than the current one it could indicate that the car was clocked.
8. It is not a good idea to transact in cash and certainly don’t bring a large amount of cash to an isolated location when buying a used car. If you can avoid using cash, do so. Use a bank draft. The seller can verify the draft. No matter how you carry out the transaction always get a purchase receipt.
4. If buying from a garage, get a warranty for the car. If the dealer is not willing to offer this, consider walking away from the sale. The NCT is not the same as a warranty. A vehicle still needs to be serviced in line with manufacturers’ guidelines in between NCTs.
Source: RSA.ie
5. All cars over 4 years old are legally required to have a valid NCT certificate. You can check whether a cert is fake by visiting www.ncts.ie and entering the vehicle registration number. This shows the expiry date of the last NCT cert issued for that vehicle.

This year’s 54321 Challenge took place from the 6th – 9th September 2018. 27 people started the challenge under the shadow of darkness in Killarney on Thursday 6th September and cycled around the ring of Kerry on the first day. This would exhaust most people but not these as they were up early again on Friday 7th and travelled to the base of Carrauntoohil and climbed Irelands highest mountain. Having returned safe and sound from Fridays challenge, on Saturday they once again took to the bicycles and cycled from Killarney to the foot of Mount Brandon and climbed it, the persistent rain and wind did not dampen the spirits of this amazing bunch of people. The challengers spent a welcome night in Dingle before embarking on the final day which was a cycle from Dingle to finish where it all started in Killarney where they received a hero’s welcome at the Gleneagle Hotel where supporters of all three charities gathered to welcome them home. It was a weekend of bonding, banter, singing, struggles, laughs but most of all a great sense of achievement in completing the challenge on a personal level and for three great causes for all the participants. On behalf of the Skellig Stars, Grow and Sera Husky Animal Rescue and the 54321 Challenge team we would like to say thank you to all those who have sponsored us. The 27 participants came back together again on Saturday 17th November to present the cheque to the charities. This brings the amount raised to date by the 54321 Challenge to €134,156 for various Kerry Charities. The Date for next year’s event will be confirmed shortly and we will be recruiting teams so if you would like to be part of next year’s 25 or would like further information please call the event organisers Carole Moran on 087 9471336 or T.J O Connor on 087 6277141.

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Football Championship 2018 Final Congratulations to Dingle on winning the Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Football Championship 2018 Final by defeating Annascaul in Páirc an Ághasaigh, Dingle last Sunday 18th November, Dingle 0-14 to 0-13 Annascaul. In an enthralling game of football it was Dingle that came out on top despite a very courageous Annascaul challenge to claim Corn Thomáis Ághas for 2018. Cathaoirleach Bhord Chiarraí Thiar Muiris Ó Fiannachta presented the Corn Thomáis Ághas to Dingle Captain Patrick O’Connor and Barry O'Sullivan was awarded Laoch na hImeratha. Playing with the aid of the wind it was Dingle through a Micheál Flannery point from play who opened the scoring. Jason Hickson with a point from a free kick opened the scoring for Annascaul. Annascaul took the lead with another Jason Hickson point from a free kick and Dingle levelled with a Paul Geaney point from a free kick. Dingle took the lead with a Tomás Sheehy point from a free kick and Annascaul levelled the game with a Gearóid Lyne point from play. Gavin H. Curran kicked a point from a forty-five for Dingle and Paul Devane with a point from play gave Dingle a two point lead. The score after 15 minutes of play was Dingle 0-5 to 0-3 Annascaul. Brian O’Connor kicked a point from play for Dingle and Matthew Flaherty extended Dingle’s lead with a point from play. Shortly after Paul Geaney put Barry O’Sullivan through to punch a point from play to give Dingle a five point lead. James Crean with a point from play reduced the deficit to four and shortly after Crean with another point from play left Annascaul only three behind. Shortly after the game was blown wide open when Dingle’s Paul Geaney received a black card and when Annascaul’s Fintan Herlihy kicked a point from play after a great run the Annascaul supporters were starting to believe that a major upset was on the cards. Another Ja-
son Hickson point from a free kick left only the minimum between the sides and when Referee Billy O’Shea blew the whistle for half time the scoreboard in Páirc an Ághasaigh read Dingle 0-8 to 0-7 Annascaul. Gavin H. Curran opened the second half scoring with a point from a forty-five for Dingle. Annascaul lost Shane Foley when he received a black card and his replacement Aidan Crean had it back to a one point game again when he kicked a point from a free kick shortly after. The game was level with 5 minutes played in the second half when Aidan Crean kicked another point from a free kick and Annascaul then went ahead by one when Crean kicked another point from a free kick directly after. Dingle responded with points from play from Tomás Sheehy, Matthew Flaherty and Micheál Flannery to restore their lead to two. The score after 15 minutes played in the second half, Dingle 0-12 to 0-10 Annascaul. Jason Hickson narrowed the gap to one with a point from a free kick for Annascaul and when Aidan Crean kicked his fourth point from a free kick for Annascaul the sides where level again. With the game ebbing and flowing the large crowd in Páirc an Ághasaigh were getting their full value for money and at this point the game could have gone either way. Dingle’s Tom O’Sullivan gave the home side a one point lead with a point from play after Mikey Geaney put him through on the Annascaul goal. When Tomás Sheehy kicked a fine effort from play to put Dingle two points up well into injury time the home crowd breathed a sigh of relief. With time well and truly up Jason Hickson with another point from a free kick reduced Dingle’s lead to one and when a hop ball was awarded from the resulting kick out it took some tremendous defending from Dingle to withstand Annascaul’s final attack to win the game by one point. When Referee Billy O’Shea blew the whistle for full time the scoreboard in Páirc an Ághasaigh read to Dingle 0-14 to 0-13 Annascaul. Annascaul: Tommy Pierce, Gearóid Lyne (0-1), Gearóid O’Shea, Joe Kennedy, Fintan Herlihy (01), Andrew Finn, James Scanlon, Niall McKenna, Eamon Hickson, Shane Foley, Jason Hickson (0-5, 5fr), Eoin Curry, James Crean (0-2), Cathal Ferriter, Jaime O’Driscoll Fir Ionaid: Aidan Crean (0-4, 4fr), James Ashe

functions of the elbow, especially the motion of rotating the forearm from palm down to palm up. This motion is called supination. Sometimes there is only a partial tear to the tendon, which may heal to a certain extent and can be rehabilitated to a reasonable level of strength without surgery.
Biceps tendon tears can be either partial or complete. Underhand / Overhand Grip
Partial tears. These tears do not completely sever the tendon.
Weakness in the shoulder and the elbow
Complete tears. A complete detachment of the tendon from the bone.
Difficulty turning the arm palm up or palm down Because a torn tendon can no longer keep the biceps muscle tight, a bulge in the upper arm above the elbow (“Popeye Muscle”) may appear, with a dent closer to the shoulder. I have seen many people with bicep tears lead normal lives, after a small bit of physio. The arm will be weaker but functional. If you require close to full recovery of strength in a torn bicep, surgery is required.
Eddie O’Grady
Biceps Tear – Elbow Bicep tear - shoulder The long head of the biceps tendon is the more likely tendon of the three attachments to be injured. This is because it is vulnerable as it travels through the shoulder joint to its attachment point within the shoulder socket. Fortunately, the biceps has two attachment heads at the shoulder, and the short head of the biceps rarely tears. When this second attachment remains intact, many people can still use their biceps even after a complete tear of the long head. Tears of the biceps tendon at the elbow are less common. They are most often caused by a sudden injury, and tend to result in greater arm weakness than injuries to the biceps tendon at the shoulder, because there is only one attachment point. Once torn, the biceps tendon at the elbow will not attach back onto the bone and heal. Other arm muscles make it possible to bend the elbow fairly well without the biceps tendon. However, they cannot fulfill all the
Causes In many cases, torn tendons begin by fraying. As the damage progresses, the tendon can completely tear, sometimes when lifting a heavy object. Also If you fall hard on an outstretched arm or lift something too heavy, you can tear your biceps tendon. The lower bicep head tendon tear is a reasonably common injury in powerlifters(but not in the general population) using an under and overhand grip on the bar. It is the underhand grip arm the bicep usually tears on. Lifting with two overhand grips as in weightlifting is safer on the biceps but is seen as a weaker grip. Symptoms Sudden, sharp pain in the upper arm while lift- Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street ing with the arm & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) Pain/Bruising of the bicep area near shoulder or elbow

Johnny English Strikes Again Pierce Hoare With the rumour of a new Austin Powers movie, I thought I would talk about a recent movie in the same genre. Johnny English Strikes again is the third installment in the spy/comedy Johnny English series. The film stars Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean, Blackadder) as the titular Johnny English as he stumbles his way through saving England once again. This time he must figure out who is behind a series of cyber attacks on the British government and quite cleverly uses low tech means to do so. Some examples of this are the abandonment of smartphones and electric cars, although this ends up not working in his favour at points. Unfortunately the film loses it’s understanding of technology completely when talking about how the internet works but I thought it was so misinformed it ended up adding to the comedy. The use of the gadgets in the film were entertaining and Atkinson’s performance was hilarious as always. While I dont think Johnny English Strikes Back is as good as the first film, it is definitely better than the second. I’m sure the movie will make an appearance as a Big Big Movie on RTE some time in the future, so if it does I would recommend giving it a watch. Pierce Hoare is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

Time to Talk Stories From The Heart Of Ireland le Michael Healy-Rae ‘There’s great power in talking, but there’s greater power in laughing. Even the best doctor in the world would be hard pushed to find a treatment with better medicinal properties than a good laugh. This is why you can’t beat the wit of real-life Irish stories and why I have filled this book with various incidents that occurred throughout my family’s lives - some humorous, some poignant, some heartbreaking - but each one of them is the God’s honest truth. I hope the stories in this book will entertain you and distract you from your troubles for a bit.’ - Michael Healy-Rae An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Cllr. Séamus Cosaí Fitzgerald An Outdoor recreational officer has recently been appointed to oversee the upgrade and the development the Dingle Way. This week under the National Outdoor Recreation Grant Scheme, funding of €208,000 has been announced by Minister Michael Ring to upgrade some of the off road sections of the Dingle Way which will this year bring the total investment on this scenic walk to €260,000. The funding will allow large scale path repair works take place especially on those sections that have become badly eroded over the last number of years. It is envisaged that one of the worst sections of the Dingle Way on the northern side of the Dingle Peninsula between Mount Brandon and Más an Tiompán down to Araglen will be upgraded sooner rather than later. This section of path down to Araglen in Brandon has become severely eroded and very wet underfoot and makes for very uncomfortable hill walking. Over time it is envisaged that more of the Dingle Way will be off road which will lend itself to be the most iconic walks in Western Europe.
