This year we are delighted to say that our Christmas Day swim will be at Beenbane Beach at 12.30pm. It is the first time in many years that the tides are out and low tides are at 1pm. This allows us a full beach this year. Yippee! •
The plan is to be on the beach 12.15pm

Some points: Please park your car taking care not to block others in as we all want to get as close as we can to the beach. Also remember to keep the drive clear in the event of an emergency. Please take into consideration that this is a splash and dash and it is all about fun. The water at this time of year is cold and knowing the limits of everyone is important. As usual our main focus of the Christmas Day Swim is that it is a place to come on Christmas morning for some fun, for some smiles.

Keeping in our minds that Christmas Day may not be as easy for everyone - the swim, the fun the laughter and the company is so valuable, setting us all up for the day - we will have a collection bucket but it is not a charity swim, it is a community swim. If there are waves, mind the small kids as we run in. Everyone is welcome and we will as usual have a bucket. We have not decided yet who will benefit. Last 2 years we donated our small funds to the Kerry link Cancer Care Bus-thankful to all who donated. Things to remember when you are getting ready Keep your feet warm until the last minute-stand on a towel or a bag until we say go. Cold sand goes up through you. Keep your head warm until the last minute -remember feet and head. When we come out, get dressed from the head down. Bring a few layers. Bring more than one towel. Stand on the towel or a bag and get dressed head down-have your clothes ready if it is wet and cold IF if it raining-bring a black bag for your clothes to keep them dry Bring a warm drink for the younger kids. When you get home-don't have a shower straight away if your feet and hands are very cold, give your self a few hot cups of tea, and change your socks with dry ones, bearing in mind that as your body heats up the cold comes into the clothes and they become damp and you don't heat up proper.

Alcohol sends the blood to your skin surface and increases the circulation so be mindful that if you are drinking to take that into consideration. Do not swim or go into the water if you had drink before the swim

The film stars Robert Redford and is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker, from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest's commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. EVENTS. Well no need I suppose to remind you all to get your crazy clothing out for THE WRAN which is Dingles undisputed annual Feast Day. And amidst of all the humour and celebrations it should not be forgotten that many local worthy causes benefit from the various collections each year. So get out enjoy the day and support this wonderful tradition now so unique to West Kerry.
SEASONAL SPIRIT. What a wonderful Christmas spirit has been created with window decorations, lights and trees of all sizes, shapes and colours appearing along every street and surrounding areas this year. Lets hope the weather will allow us to get out and enjoy the many events which are being organised around the Peninsula during the Christmas and New Year period. Great effort and imagination with the decorations so well done everybody!!!. CONCERTS. The Dingle New Music Choir and Orchestra will be holding their annual Winter Concert in St Mary's Church Green Street on Friday 21st starting at 8.30p.m. Tickets at â‚Ź10 available at the door and always a very pleasant start to the seasonal celebrations. The Hillgrove Hotel is the venue on Friday 28th for the highly acclaimed Velocity Show which features our own world champion dancer David Geaney. Doors open at 8p.m. with the performance commencing at 8.30p.m. Tickets available at the Hillgrove reception or on line. On Sunday 30th St Marys Church will host a Major Concert featuring Mary Black and many talented local artists commencing at 7p.m. Tickets at â‚Ź25 are available at Neligan's Bar Main Street or online with proceeds going to the Billy Riordan Memorial Medical Clinic in Malawi. SHOP LOCAL. Another remind that by SHOPPING LOCAL we can actually save existing jobs or even help create the much needed new employment in the Peninsula. Please take time to travel around the various outlets and if nothing impresses as a suitable gift item consider a book or a voucher in a local shop or other usable local service. SAFETY. NEW YEARS EVE. Dingle Cycling Club usually provide the first action of the day with a cycle around the full Slea Head Circuit which also attracts good support from outside clubs. The FIREWORKS DISPLAY is scheduled to commence from the Pier at 10p.m. and motorists are reminded to come early to help the parking situation. The DINGLE FIFE AND DRUM BAND PARADE commences from Bridge Street at 11.30p.m and they will play in the New Year during their traditional parade around town. GREETINGS. 'Many hands make light work' Nagle Rice Community Centre-Concert With a debt of €50,000 still outstanding on the above Community Centre , the committee are embarking on their one and only fundraiser for 2017/2018... a night of music and song with 'Britain 's Got Talent' singing priest, Fr Ray Kelly. The concert will be held on this Thursday,December 20th in the Nagle Rice Community Centre. Supporting acts will be Noreen Ashe and Eddie Lee along with the Killorglin Mens Shed Choir. This building is a wonderful facility for each and every member in our community, regularly used by so many different groups and organisations. Farming News SHEEP CENSUS All farmers are reminded to complete their Sheep Census, 2018, as failure to complete same may result in them losing their ANC and their Sheep Welfare Payments. NITRATES & SLURRY EXPORTS Any farmer who believes that they will exceed their Nitrates Limit in 2018 are advised to have a Record 3 -Slurry Export Form complete and submitted to DAFM’s Nitrate Section, in Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford before 31st December. Again failure to do so, can result in severe penalties under the Nitrates Directive. BEEF DATA GENOMICS SCHEME For those who participate in the BDGS, they will welcome the timely news that payment for this scheme has commenced of €38 million to all successful applicants. Payment will be on-going over the coming weeks once it has been confirmed that participants have complied with the scheme requirements, and will continue into the New Year. So, if you don’t receive it before Christmas, don’t panic, it will come. ANC APPEAL PROCESS Many farmers have concerns about their future in the ANC Scheme. This is an independent Appeals Committee, and will deal with cases whereby a farmer loses his eligibility to claim ANC payments. The committee is made up of Padraig Gibbins (Chairman), F Jim former chairman of AURIVO and member of ICOS, National Dairy Council and Commonage Implementation Committee; Jim O’Mahony, a former Crops, Horticulture and Energy Programme Manager and Paud Evans, (from this parish – a welcome inclusion), a life-long career Civil Servant, who ran the DAS office in DAFM Portlaoise for many years, his retirement was the farmers loss, so it’s great to see his new involvement in ANC affairs. An appeals notification form is available from the DAFM website. DAFM will also write directly to affected farmers. CHRISTMAS 1918 Over the past five years, we have examined the history of man at Christmas, and the sacrifices made by those who died so that we could have a secure future. Many of these men who lost their lives, so that we could have a future were Irishmen. And they are the forgotten ones. But let’s not forget these brave men, as they were out flesh and blood. Some may even have been out kit-and-kin. Almost fifty thousand on them. Every year, all over the world, those who have fallen in battle are commemorated for their heroism and sacrifice. However, the commemoration of the Irish men who fought in the first world War has be the subject of debate because the events in Ireland at the time overshadowed their efforts. There has been recent discussion and a greater emphasis on these men, who gave their lives in the “War To End All Wars”. Though they fought in the uniform of the British Army, that was not who they fought for, they fought for Ireland, and all small nations. There is no agreement on the total number of Irish soldiers who served in the British Army and Navy in the First World War. Professor Keith Jeffery gives a figure of 210,000. There appears to be a consensus that at least 35,000 died though the figure on the National War Memorial is 49,400. To put this is perspective, this is almost as many men as the US forces lost in the War in the Pacific in WWII or in The Vietnam War between 1965 and 1973. This included great minds such as Tom Kettle and Francis Ledwidge and Mick O’Leary (V.C.) This does not include officers, men who joined the British navy or air force or men who served in the forces of Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. Neither does it include Irish emigrants in Britain who enlisted there and are not categorised as Irish. Australia lists 4,731 of its first World War soldiers as having been born in Ireland, and more than 19,000 Irish-born soldiers served in the Canadian Corps. The Irish who were part of the British Expeditionary Force, as the field army sent to France was known, at the outbreak of war were involved in a number of notable actions. The Royal Irish Regiment at Mons was involved in a notable rear-guard action, as were the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers at Etreux, in northern France, where the battalion was almost wiped out by a German force six times their number on August 27th, 1914. By the end of 1914 the Irish regiments had lost more than 2,000 men, but 1915 was even worse. The Royal Munster Fusiliers and Royal Dublin Fusiliers suffered hundreds of dead on April 25th, 1915, during the invasion of Gallipoli. Another battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers sustained heavy losses during a gas attack at Ypres in May 1915. The 10th (Irish) Division was the first of the raised Irish divisions to see action. It landed at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli in August 1915 and suffered terribly both there and throughout the campaign, which ended in its evacuation. It spent the rest of the war in the forgotten campaign of Thessaloníki and, later, in the Middle East. The 16th (Irish) Division and 36th (Ulster) Division both spent the war on the Western Front, sustaining horrendous casualties. The 16th Irish Division was subject to a terrible gas attack in Easter Week 1916 that killed 550 mostly Irish

soldiers at Hulluch, in northern France. The 36th (Ulster) Division is best remembered for its casualties on the first day of the Somme offensive, the worst day in the history of the British army. The division sustained about 5,500 casualties on that day, July 1st, 1916. The 16th Irish Division and 36th Ulster Division were involved in the successful Battle of Messines, at Ypres, in May 1917; their actions are marked by the Island of Ireland Peace Park, at Messines, which was opened by President Mary McAleese and Queen Elizabeth in 1998. Both divisions suffered terrible casualties at Passchendaele in August 1917 and during the German spring offensive in 1918. That they didn’t achieve what they fought for, doesn’t take from their sacrifice. Many of their colleagues who survived came home and contributed to this freedom. Men like Robert Emmet, J.J. (Ginger) O’Connor, and the guerrilla leader Tom Barry. These men got to come home and make a difference. The tragedy is that they ended up fighting on opposite sides, later, but at one time, (in fact two times) they fought on the same side. But one thing that can’t be denied is that these were brave men, who stood up for their country, and for the future generations, in Ireland. Every year, we hold a commemoration to remember those who fell in war. It doesn’t attract the same attention that the same event receives in Britain or Franc and Belgium, but it is growing in support, partly because many confused these men’s sacrifice with British Rule. However, Britain went to war to come to the defence of “Small Nations” particularly Belgium. That they neglected the Small Nation to their west is another debate, but our soldiers went to fight for similar countries. Many of the Irishmen were not well-received on their return, but also were forgotten by the army who they fought for, as they were soon to belong to a new country. The first one to break the rule of the British Empire. The glory days at the start of the war when men marched to war with brass bands soon changed with the savage onslaught to trench warfare, rat infestation, chlorine gas attacks, the flamethrower, massive artillery barrages and the power of the machinegun. Starvation, disease and finally the Spanish Flu all took the gloss off the fight, and in the end, they all just wanted to come home. So Christmas 1918 was possible the worst of all Christmas’s. It was a time of sadness, loss, loneliness and despair. Unwanted by their regiment and more and distrusted by their rebelling neighbours, on their return. This is why one of the greatest of our heroes, Tom Crean settled quietly into his community, never speaking of his experiences or getting involved in the fight for independence. He and all his surviving colleagues from the Great War had seen enough bloodshed and horror, to last a lifetime. A minority of those who returned failed to settle into life, especially in rural Ireland but the vast majority of the veterans however did settle down and live a normal life. There was no “GI Bill” and no funding to rehabilitate them. The fact that so many of them turned out somewhat normal is a credit to their own resilience and to the support offered from their families. They are the true heroes. What has this to do with farming? Nothing, It’s just a story for Christmas. It’s also just a short story of humanity. In a quiet News Week, isn’t it good to have a story of how resilient we are. It is no harm to remember these events, and especially at Christmas. This is the 100th Anniversary of the events that saw the end of World War I. But we should never forget these brave men. We all sleep safely in our beds because of these men. When you lie in bed next Monday night, awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus, forget your prejudices and spare a thought for those who had none and just volunteered, fought and died. War continues, and there will always be war, but because of brave men like our Fallen Heroes, we know that when the threat of a despot threatens us, there will always be someone to rise up to defend our right to freedom. Christmas is a time of happiness, and we should be happy that we had these men. They are still here, they are out there, maybe it is even you. Let us hope that we never find out, but if we have to, we know that you will be there. We in this country never really learned how to honour and remember these great men, and to idolise heroism, but we are getting there. We now have the “Shamrock/Poppy” a symbol that remembers all men who fought in war. This may be an Irish Solution to an Irish Problem, but it works, and all men should be proud to wear one. I am. Christmas Memories from Annascaul
happy – now that I remember – as I gazed entranced. Some of us would go up as far as Barr a’ Mháma on Christmas Eve night, so as to have a grand stand view of our little baile beag or sráidbhaile, as well as the surrounding countryside, then resplendent with the many lights shining brightly in the darkness. Up there, on Barr a’ Mháma, Bethlehem and the Babe, and Mary and Joseph were everlasting realities. And up there, on such a night, went Tadhg, the brother, to compose and make his little offering in words to our great Redeemer. It runs: On such a night, in Bethlehem, A little babe was born, Beside a gentle ox and ass, Who kept his body warm. And down from the Judean hills, The shepherds knelt in prayer, While Joseph and the mother watched
Brothers Paddy and Tadhg (Teddy) O’Donnell grew up in Main Street, Annascaul, where the family ran a shop and bar in a property later owned by the late Joan Kiely. Paddy lived in Galway and served in the Defence Forces, Teddy was a civil servant in the department of social Welfare and lived in Dublin. Teddy was a friend of Sigerson Clifford, was interested in the arts and composed poetry. The following are Paddy’s memories of Christmas in 1920s Annascaul: One of my earliest memories is of going to early Mass with Mom on a Christmas morning – holding on for dear life to the tassels of her shawl, lest I get lost in the darkness. Coming back after Mass, I would run to my bed, where all the little presents lay on top of it. There were lovely rosy apples from the garden of Hesperus and juicy sun kissed oranges from Tír na nÓg as well as a huge Christmas stocking from a nearby shop. In the stocking - among other things – was a little car and a bugle, a spinning top and marbles, and a game of snakes and ladders. I was deliriously 14 West Kerry Live

The removal of overdue fines was a key aim under the national strategy for public libraries, Our Public Library 2022, launched in June of this year. Evidence shows that fines do not encourage the timely return of items but can have a detrimental effect on library use by children and people from disadvantaged areas. From January 1st, no fines will be collected on late items, regardless of when the item was borrowed. All outstanding fines will be waived. We’re also removing fines for lost and damaged children’s items. Charges will remain for adult items that are lost or badly damaged. (Fines collected before December 31st will not be refunded.)

Five Dingle Residents To Share €350,000 Worth Of Sustainable Technologies In Their Homes And Businesses Christmas will come early for five lucky Dingle residents, whose homes and businesses have been selected by ESB Networks to deploy a range of sustainable technologies, including solar panels, battery management systems and electric vehicles chargers. With an expected investment of €350,000, the project will include a number of deep retrofits to facilitate the installation of ultra-efficient air source heat pumps. Christmas Tragedy in Minard (From: Kerry Evening Post, July, 1890) Last Christmas a terrible thunderstorm swept over this district. The lightening struck the house of a poor man named Jerry Sullivan, of Minard. It made a large breach in the roof, passing on from the lower little room to the kitchen, killing Mrs Sullivan’s niece; a girl of sixteen years, without giving her time to utter a cry; killing also sheep and a cow which were in the house. The flash now rushes to the upper room, breaking everything in its way, enveloping Mrs Sullivan and two of her children in flames, scorching and dashing them from the fire to the door, so much so that the poor woman was between life and death for several weeks, being near her confinement at the time. But that is not all. After shaking the house to its foundation, splitting the walls and rendering it uninhabitable, the lightening in passing from the dwelling-house enters a cowshed and kills another cow and heifer. Poor Sullivan had now but one remaining [cow] to support a family of eight and to meet the rent and taxes. All his future prospects were built upon her. But, alas, he is doomed to disappointment – she died a few days ago. Nothing now remains for poor Sullivan except the bread of bitterness, the workhouse or an appeal to the public. By the advice of his parish priest he has adopted the latter alternative and his appeal has not been in vain. His fellow parishioners of Lispole have contributed about £7 out of their poverty. Some hot-headed farmers attempted to retaliate, but finding discretion the better part of valour, they beat a hasty retreat before the volleys of the undismayed youngsters. On Saturday one of the tenantry got his eyes mashed in his head, an incident which caused the constabulary to put an end to the snow-balling, but some members of the force came in for some hard pelting from the fair sex, who stationed themselves in the windows of their houses, thereby keeping themselves out of the view of the R.I.C. The snow-coated streets are now frozen over, rendering them all but impassable to pedestrians and vehicular traffic has to be suspended.

Castlegregory Races (From: Kerry Evening Post, December 1893) The Races were commenced today under unfavourable circumstances. At about twelve o’clock snow commenced to fall heavily, and continued at intervals during the day. The course, which is pretty, situated on the west shore of Lough Beg, is perfectly flat, the only fault to find with it being in the sharp turns at either end. Notwithstanding the bad state of the weather the meeting passed off successfully, and the success may be attributed to the untiring activity of Mr. T. Eagar, who acted as Clerk of the Course and Scales, and ran everything off with punctuality and dispatch. The first race was won by Mr. Mason’s Mis Vandaleur and all the other events were won by Miss Gillie Eagar’s Corner Boy and Skellig. This young lady has been very fortunate at the races this year.

Snowball wars in Dingle (From: Kerry Weekly Reporter, January 1892) Snow began to fall here on Wednesday night, and on Thursday morning the people were surprised on looking out their windows to see the country about them covered in a white garb. As it came down heavily until Saturday night, the snow was several inches deep, and snow-balling was freely practiced, affording a good pastime to the youngsters of the town. They seemed to consider these last days of their Christmas holidays, the best they have had, and much merriment to the lookers on, who however, were frequently obliged to run to a place of shelter from a snowball thrown by some bold urchin. But the contest may be said to be between the town and the country, as during the last three days of the week, Mr. O’Kearney, Lord Cork’s agent, was in town collecting the rents, and the tenantry came in for a large

A Happy and Healthy Christmas to One and All! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
potatoes cooked in duck or goose fat rack up the calories. Reduce the amount of fat absorbed by keeping the pieces big and serving size small. If you fill half your plate with colourful vegetables, dividing the other half between the meat and potatoes - you'll get the perfect balance! Gravy too, has its place on a healthy Christmas menu. Make your own stock from the turkey neck and giblets, adding celery, onion, carrot and bayleaf to the stock water. Pour the turkey juices from roasting tin into a jug and allow the fat to come to the surface before scooping it off. Add to the strained stock a splash of red wine and allow to reduce to enhance flavour. Thicken with a little cornflour and season with herbs, salt and pepper. Readymade gravies are notoriously high in salt and other additives and are best left on the shelf along with the elf! Give traditional stuffing a healthy makeover by using wholegrain breadcrumbs, onions and garlic, plenty of fresh sage, thyme, rosemary and parsley and keep fat to a minimum by substituting some of the butter with a little turkey stock to keep it moist. Other festive trimmings such as cranberries and red currants can boost the health benefits of the Christmas dinner if you buy fresh and make a simple compote (simmered in the juice of an orange, a little brown sugar, balsamic vinegar and spices such as cloves, star anise and mace). Christmas cake and plum pudding are high in sugar, so keep portions small. The main ingredients of dried fruit and nuts, but not so much the packet custard, brandy butter or cream.
Preparations for the biggest feast of the year are well underway by now - with only days to go before we sit down to tuck into the long-awaited Christmas Dinner! Christmas is not typically associated with healthy eating. However, most of the culinary crimes committed during the holidays which leave us feeling wretched can be prevented with some last minute "menu-tweaking". It's good to know that the traditional fare served up on Christmas day is essentially a well-balanced meal and has many positive things going for it. A little extra of the good stuff (and less of the bad) could be the recipe to keep you shining all the way through to the New Year! Christmas Morning can be a noisy, chaotic and exciting time, especially if there are small children in the house. Breakfast can be made extrachristmassy by doing something different, but keeping it healthy at the same time! For example, this warm berry drink, rich in vitamin C is simple to make and tastes delicious. Whizz some raspberries and blueberries in a blender. Add boiled water or warm orange juice, slices of lemon and oranges (studded with cloves), a little honey and stir with a cinnamon stick (you can leave the cinnamon stick in the liquid until serving). Follow with a protein-rich meal such as boiled or poached eggs with wholemeal toast or a rich, eggy french toast with honey or maple syrup. Remember, too much sugar first thing in the morning is a bad idea if you want the happy Christmas to last through the day! The main event of day, the Christmas dinner, is typically high in calories, salt and saturated fat. You can serve a healthier version without compromising on the basic ingredients or taste. Turkey is an excellent source of low-fat protein and vitamin B12. As most of the fat found in turkey is found mainly in the skin and some in the dark meat - avoid eating the skin and go for the lower-fat meat from the breast. Turkey is also a fantastic source of amino-acid tryptophan, which converts to mood-enhancing serotonin another good reason to keep turkey on the menu during the dark months of Winter. Ham is also a good source of protein and some B vitamins, but can be very high in salt and saturated fat. Soak in cold water over night to reduce some of the salt. Throw away the soak water and use fresh water to cook it. Trim as much fat off your slice before digging in. Brussels sprouts are probably the nutritional highlight of the Christmas Dinner! They belong to the brassica family of vegetables, the plant equivalent of super heroes. Other brassicas include cabbage (red and green), broccoli, cauliflower and kale. Love them or hate them, their cancer-fighting nutrients and antioxidants protect our health and their undigested fibre is lapped up by our good gut bacteria, a win-win for everyone! Retain the health properties of these veg by keeping cooking time to a minimum, leaving them crisp and fresh looking on the plate. Carrots are rich in betacarotene, another well-known cancer-fighting antioxidant and vitamin C. A colourful selection of vegetables serves up many healthy nutrients to minimize some of the ill-effects of over-indulging during this time! Potatoes, washed and cooked in their jackets are fibre-rich and also a good source of vitamin C. Serve with a little mashed sweet potato and avoid the feeling the effects of too much spuds during this meal. Roast 20 West Kerry Live

Under 14s: After a tough start to their league campaign this young team notches up a very valuable win away to Castleisland under lights this week, this sets them up nicely for phase 2 of the league that kicks off in January Under 16s: Also a very young team, a team that have stuck together since under 8s, are putting in some very impressive performances playing a lovely brand of Rugby, early season was an eye opener getting used to some powerful opposition, phase 2 of the league looks very promising for this team Seniors: Whilst being tight on squad numbers at times the team has put in some very impressive performances and being unlucky thus far in a few games. Training is Friday evenings and the seniors would love to see new faces or past RCD players back togged out for a run out every Friday We would like to wish the community the supports us so well, the parents , sponsors and all players a peaceful Christmas and a lovely 2019

Congratulations to Scoil Cheann Trá football team who won the Allianze Cumann na mBunscol 3 teacher County Final against Knockanes National School in Austin Stack Park recently. Ceann Trá had a hard first half playing against the wind and were trailing by a point at half time. A fierce battle ensued in the second half with scores coming hard and fast, with a solitary point separating the teams with minutes to go. In the dying minutes, a rally gave Ceann Trá the upper hand against Knockanes giving them a six point win at full time. Full time score 4 goals 7 points to 3 goals 4 points. A great days’ football for the school. Thanks go to Tommy ó Muircheartaigh who regularly trains the pupils and to parents and family for the wonderful support on the night.

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor CAMP SOCIAL What a truly memorable night we had in our own hall hosting Camp Social. To the team that made it possible, dedicating their time and effort in the lead up and the clean up, a heartfelt thanks to you, one and all and a special mention to Camp ICA ladies.. To Noreen Ashe who made the night complete with her lovely music and songs we are forever grateful, not forgetting the fabulous food served by Padraig and his team the compliments and positive comments stand testimony to the fine dining we experienced. Outgoing Chairman John Ahern reported a busy year on the Dingle Way. John was delighted to welcome an allocation of €208,000.00 in funding received recently through the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. John acknowledged and thanked Minister Brendan Griffin T.D. for his support of the application saying that it would not have happened without the Ministers support and intervention. John also thanked Kerry Co. Council, Údarás na Gaeltachta, NEWKD and South Kerry Partnership for their support and he particularly acknowledged the help of Fíonnán ó Hógáin, Údarás na Gaeltachta, John Sheehy, Dingle, Patricia Deane, SKP and John Griffin, Joe McCarthy and Colm Nagle, Kerry Co. Council. John welcomed the newly appointed Dingle Way, Tourism and Cultural Officer Liadáin Slattery to the meeting. Liadáin will work on promotion and marketing and upgrading the website along with linking in with Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance and work to create new packages to attract off season visitors. This position is funded by Údarás na Gaeltachta. John Ahern was praised for his commitment over the years and his passion and enthusiasm in working towards making the Dingle Way a world class walking route and attraction for visitors ! Kevin O Shea also noted the Health and Fitness aspect of walking for everybody, locals and tourists alike. Cooking the Turkey Ingredients 1 turkey 2 onions, roughly chopped 3 carrots, roughly chopped 1 bulb of garlic, split in half plenty of herbs such as thyme, sage and rosemary, some chopped and the rest left whole olive oil
I love cooking Christmas dinner and hopefully this guide will take any stress out of it for you too! Christmas dinner should be a very special meal so if you follow this guide it will help you to have a successful meal without the stress. The two best pieces of advice that will help you enjoy cooking the Christmas dinner are: 1) Make a plan - write down a list of everything that needs to be done 2) Rest the turkey - Plan to have the turkey cooked about an hour or an hour and a half before you plan to serve it (just wrap it up well in foil and keep it in a warm part of the kitchen). During this time, you have the opportunity to finish the ham, potatoes, roast vegetables and make sauces.
Baked Pear, Blue Cheese and Walnut (Starter)
Ingredients (Serves 6) 3 pears, choose firm pears 100g brown sugar 50g butter 150g blue cheese broken into pieces (I recommend Young Buck or Cashel Blue) handful of rocket squeeze of lemon juice rapeseed oil 150g walnuts, toasted and crushed sea salt and pepper Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Cut the pears in half lengthways and scoop out the core piece using a melon baller. Slice off a piece from the other side to help the pear sit flat later when served. Add the sugar and butter to a tray and place the pears flesh side down. Put this in the oven for about 20 minutes. At this stage, the pears should be soft and have glazed - you can

Mix the rocket with a dash of lemon juice and rapeseed oil. Put this in the centre of six plates, place the warm pear on top and sprinkle with some toasted walnuts and season with salt and pepper keeping in mind that the blue cheese will have a plenty of salt in it.
The Turkey Before you start, make sure you have a large tray, which is big enough for the turkey, and ensure the tray (and the turkey) fit in the oven. It is worth buying a temperature probe to test if the turkey is done.
Cooking Times for the Turkey
If you are doing this the day before make sure you cool down the ham as quickly as possible to get it in to the fridge.
If the turkey is under 4.5kg/10lb, calculate 20 mins per kg + 70 minutes.
To test if it’s done, make sure the juices run clear when you pierce the thigh where it meets the body and use the temperature probe to check if the temperature reaches 75ºC. If not, put it back in the oven for another 20 mins, then test again. The next step is one of the most important steps to prevent your turkey from drying out. Once you are happy that the turkey is done take it
Ingredients 1.5kg large maris piper potatoes or roosters 2 garlic cloves rosemary thyme goose fat or duck fat Method Preheat the oven 190°C.
Method Place the ham in cold water and bring to the boil. Change the water and repeat, then turn down to a simmer. Allow 50 minutes per kg or 20 minutes per lb.

Crispy Roast Potatoes

Before you cook it, rub the skin with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and black pepper and some chopped herbs such as thyme or sage. Have the oven turned to 180ºC before the turkey goes in. People always have different views on the stuffing, whether to stuff the bird or to make stuffing and leave it out. My advice would be to cook the stuffing separately to ensure that there are no uncooked juices of the turkey in the stuffing. I always find that when I keep the stuffing separate I can adjust the seasoning more easily.
If the turkey is over 4.5kg/10lb, calculate 20 minutes per kg + 90 minutes.
Put this in a hot oven, 210°C, and bake for about 30 minutes.
Method Place the turkey on a large tray. It is good to put some onions, carrots and herbs under the bird as this prevents the turkey from sticking to the pan and also the vegetables will soak in juices, which will taste good when making the gravy. Now you should be ready to cook the turkey using the timings from above.
The Ham - can be done the day before

Place the ham on a tray and pour the glaze over the ham.

Before you start, get the exact weight of the turkey. Make sure the turkey comes to room temperature, this means having it out of the fridge at least two hours before you want to cook it.
I have had a look at several charts and cooking times but I think below is the most straightforward guide to follow providing you with perfect results:
To Glaze the Ham
Ingredients 1 ham (smoked or unsmoked) handful of cloves water
Once it is done, remove it from the water and allow it to cool a little. It is best to remove the outer layer of skin while the ham is hot and then use a sharp knife to score the fat in diamond shapes and place a clove in each diamond. Your ham is now ready to be glazed.
Honey, Mustard & Sherry Vinegar Glaze Ingredients 2 tbsp. honey 100g demerara sugar 50ml Madeira or a dry sherry 1 tsp. mustard powder 25ml sherry vinegar Method Put the sugar, Madeira, sherry vinegar, and honey into a pan and stir over a low heat. Whisk in the mustard powder. Bring this to the boil to allow the sugar to dissolve. Lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until you have a dark syrupy glaze. Keep stirring to make sure that the glaze doesn’t burn.
Peel the potatoes, then cut into quarters, and place in a bucket of cold water. This can be done the day before. Boil a large pot of salted water and add the potatoes, then cook for 15 minutes. They should be halfcooked at this stage. You can now drain them and leave in the colander for a few minutes to remove as much moisture as possible. At this stage place the tray in the oven with goose fat or duck fat. Shake the potatoes in the colander to roughen the edges, Remove the tray from the oven and add the potatoes and place back in the oven. After 20 minutes, you can add the rosemary, thyme and garlic. Continue to roast for a further 20 minutes or so shaking them every 5 minutes to cook evenly. Season with sea salt and black pepper.
Roast Brussels Sprouts with Smoked Bacon and Toasted Hazelnuts
Ingredients 2 small bags of Brussels sprouts 250g smoked bacon cut into lardons 1 tbsp. sherry vinegar 2 tbsp. hazelnuts, toasted and crushed rapeseed oil salt and pepper Method Heat oven to 210ºC (you can
cook this when you are glazing the ham)
Cut the bottom off the Brussels sprouts, and slice each in half top to bottom. Heat a pan over medium heat; once it is hot place the sprouts cut side down in one layer in pan. sprinkle with salt and pepper. Leave the sprouts here until they start to brown. Once they start to brown add a little butter and put them in the oven. Roast them in the oven for about 15-20 minutes remembering to shake them every 5 minutes or so. While you are doing this place a pan on over high heat, add some oil and add the bacon, cook until brown.
When the sprouts are done, season them well and add in the vinegar, toss the bacon and hazelnuts over them and serve.
Roast Cauliflower, Cumin, Turmeric, Pomegranate Dressing (Vegetarian main or side dish) Ingredients
1 head of cauliflower, broken into florets ½ tsp. of cumin seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. turmeric salt and pepper dash of rapeseed oil for the dressing 1 pomegranate 4 segments of orange and zest bunch of coriander sherry vinegar (to taste) rapeseed oil 1 tbsp. yogurt Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
salt and black pepper Method Start by infusing the cream. To do this put a pot over a medium heat, add the cream and some salt, pepper, thyme and garlic. Cook this for about 5 minutes. Turn it off and leave to infuse for about 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Layer half of the celeriac and turnip slices in a large ovenproof dish, pour some of the infused cream liquid over this, then season with salt and pepper. Continue to layer the celeriac and turnip and the liquid until all of the ingredients have been used up. Finish by pouring the liquid over the top. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the dish with tin foil and bake in the oven for about 40 minutes. Remove the foil and scatter the cheese and breadcrumbs over the creamy dish. Turn the oven down to 150ºC and put the dish back in for another 30 minutes.
Put the cauliflower in a bowl and add in the spices and salt and pepper. Mix this well to coat with the spices. Drizzle some oil over them and place them on a tray. Cook them in the oven for about 25-30 mins.
Roast Parsnip and Carrots with Local Honey and Thyme
For the dressing Remove the seeds from the pomegranate - the trick to this is to place the pomegranate on a board with the centre piece (the crown) pointing upwards, half way down the fruit use a small knife cut into the skin all the way round. Pick up the pomegranate and twist both ends in opposite directions to leave you with two halves and no mess. Hold the fruit over a bowl with the seeds facing in the direction of the bowl and using a rolling pin or a large wooden spoon gently tap the pomegranate until all the seeds are removed.

Now that you have the beautiful red seeds removed you can proceed to make the dressing. Gently heat some oil in a pot. Add the pomegranate seeds, orange segments, some juice and zest, and season with sherry vinegar. Add the coriander, taste and add salt and pepper to season. To serve, place the cauliflower in a bowl and drizzle some dressing over and then a little yogurt.
Celeriac and Turnip Gratin Ingredients
500ml cream 1 large turnip, sliced finely and cut into discs ½ celeriac, peeled and sliced 4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed some thyme leaves, picked 50g Mt Leinster cheddar cheese, grated

Homemade Cranberry and Spiced Orange Sauce
Method Heat the oil in a small frying pan. Add the onion and fry gently until very soft. Mix together the fried onion, vinegar and sugar and add to a large pot along with the red cabbage, apples and sultanas. Pour in the cider until it comes about ¾ way on the red cabbage, cover the cabbage with some parchment paper and cook very slowly for 2 hours. Make sure to stir it every now and then to ensure it is not sticking to the bottom of the pot, add a little water if it is too dry.
Thyme, Lemon and Pine Nut Stuffing Ingredients 100g butter 1 large onion, diced a few sprigs of fresh thyme leaves picked breadcrumbs 200g pine nuts, toasted
Ingredients
1 lemon zested and juiced
600g carrots, halved
salt and pepper
600g small parsnips, halved bunch of thyme, leaves picked 2 tbsp. local honey 2 tsp. lemon juice parsley, chopped Method Add the carrots to a large pot of boiling salted water and cook them for about 8 minutes. Once they are par-cooked place them in cold water. Repeat this process with the parsnips. This step can be done the day before. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Place the carrots and parsnips in a large roasting tin with the thyme and salt and pepper, and drizzle with oil. Roast them in the oven for 25 minutes, tossing occasionally in the oil during cooking, until tender and golden. Heat the honey and lemon juice for a few minutes in a small saucepan, stirring until you have a smooth, runny sauce. Pour this over the carrots and parsnips for the last 5 minutes of cooking, tossing the vegetables in the sauce to coat evenly. Scatter with the parsley just before serving.
Red Cabbage Braised in Cider Ingredients
1 head of red cabbage, sliced very finely 2 apples, sliced 1 red onion, chopped 2 tbsp. cider vinegar
100g breadcrumbs, cooked in butter
1 tbsp. rich dark brown sugar
20g butter, cubed
handful sultanas
Method In large pan add some of the butter and cook the onions slowly without allowing them to colour for 4-5 minutes. Add the herbs, the remaining butter and bread-crumbs. Ideally you want to keep the mixture moist. Add in the pine nuts and the lemon zest and juice. Season with salt and pepper.
Gravy
Ingredients
100ml ruby port 100g fresh cranberries 75g brown sugar finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange ½ cinnamon stick 1 star anise Method Place all the ingredients in a pot and cook over medium heat for about ten minutes. Make sure that there is some liquid still in the pot so that the sauce does not burn, if it is drying out add a little water or a little orange juice. Taste and adjust the seasoning if required. Remove the cinnamon and star anise and place the sauce in a blender and blend until it is the consistency required. Place this in a jar and keep in the fridge for up to one week.
Your Complete Timeline to Help You Organise Your Timing: Christmas Eve: • Make the red cabbage - you can even have this done two days before Christmas eve if you want. • Cook the ham and remove it from the water and score it • Have the ingredients ready for the glaze • Peel the potatoes and keep them in water
Ingredients

On Christmas Day:

• Bring the turkey to room temperature
pinch of flour - use gluten-free if you can’t have gluten
• Cook the turkey
100ml red wine
• Prepare the sprouts
500ml stock - use the juice from the turkey
• Prepare the cauliflower, if using
salt and pepper Method Once the turkey has been cooked and you have removed it from the tray, skim off the excess fat from the roasting tray. Put the tray on the hob over a low heat and add the diced onion, garlic, herbs and the diced carrot to the existing vegetables that were there while the turkey was cooking. Add the red wine and cook it until it has reduced by half. Make sure to scrape the tray to help remove all the bits. Stir in a pinch of flour and add about 500ml of stock. Cook it for about 10-15 minutes, I usually strain it into a pot so it can be warmed and seasoned with salt and pepper when needed. Once you are ready to serve the meal, heat
• Prepare, bake and serve the starter (this will leave an hour before the main meal but will give you plenty of time to get everything done) • When the turkey is done allow it to rest for one hour or more • Once the turkey is out of the oven turn the heat up and return the ham to the oven to glaze • This ‘turkey resting time’ will allow you to cook the vegetables, including the potatoes. • Now would be a good time to get the gravy sorted and use this time to finish the sprouts and heat the stuffing. Following the AGMs at Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal, a new Management Committee has been elected with Ann Moore taking over as Chairperson following Finbar Cahill’s retirement from the Committee. Finbar has made a magnificent contribution to the Club over a number of years and can take pride in the very positive state of the Club on his departure. Ann has been prominent in promoting a number of new initiatives in recent years and will bring great enthusiasm and drive to the Management Committee. Ignatius O’Connor was appointed as Captain of the Mens’ Club while Margaret Power took over as Captaen na mBan. It is timely to pay tribute to those who willingly give their time and effort voluntarily to the various positions as Officers, members of Committees or simply in helping out in various areas. Theodore Roosevelt in a speech in 1910 included the following passage, which nicely acknowledges those who ‘get involved’ whether it is in Golf Clubs, other sports clubs or voluntary organisations which contribute so much to our society. “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again . . . but who does actually strive to do the deeds.” Work Continues Winter is a busy time for JJ Corduff and his team. Members and some Visitors continue to enjoy playing 18 holes in very pleasant conditions – admittedly between the storms. The course is still in excellent shape – a tribute to the work and expertise of JJ and the Greenkeeping staff. The Year the Tourists never Came is the first novella from John Grinsted, a man familiar to people in West Kerry. John has been the proprietor of the Wren's Nest Café in Dykegate Lane, Dingle for the past eight years and he would have been known previously as a singer/songwriter. The pocket sized book is as much about an alternative to excessive commercialism as it is an amusing story of people living in a small town on the western seaboard. The book is set in a town called Pringle a thriving coastal tourist town perched on the edge of the Atlantic. The plot centres around the local community of the town and their reaction to a decline in the tourism based economy, when as suggested by the title the tourists failed to show.

The book is funny at times and it portrays an imaginative approach to a community facing its greatest fear, which in the end turns out to be not so bad after all. Aspects and names of some the characters in the book - such as the doctor who organises the local arts festival and the Monsignor in the presbytery appear to be more than loosely based on the author's knowledge of Dingle community stalwarts, both living and deceased. The appearance in the book of sods of turf embossed with a set of divinely inspired commandments, will amuse some people, though maybe not others. At times the plot loses pace but nonetheless it remains a thought provoking and an enjoyable quick read.

Annascaul Notes Noel Spillane Lighting of the Village Just to say a big thank you to Pauline and Derek Hunt for their wonderful Christmas display which lights up the village and to Adam Newstead who put in the hard work. Inch ParkrunWe are planning a "Santa Hat" parkrun for Dec 22nd on Inch Beach. Just turn up as usual with any sort of Santa hat on and we'll bring the festive spirit to the beach. New Years Day Run Swim Run. We are putting on an extra parkrun for New Years Day, Tuesday 1st Jan at 9am. There has been some rumours about some parkrunners wanting to do the run first, followed by a refreshing Atlantic dip, then a final run to warm up the bones in Tralee for their 11am parkrun. All aboard ! Not a bad way to start the new year. A Present for Christmas Ballinclár DVD is a video of a rural fair which takes place in Annascaul in 1995/1996 and it is on sale at Ashes Shop and in O Donnell's shop, Annascaul. This is a really fabulous production, a story/ through the lens of Bill Dillon, an excellent videographer and stories told by the local people of the village. Priced at €20. It's a lovely present to enjoy over the Christmas.. Palliative Care Unit gets over €800 The Lougher farmer and father of eight, Paddy Hickson celebrated his 70th Birthday recently with family and friends in Foley' s Bar, Inch. Paddy agreed to the party provided there were no gifts and people would instead make a donation, if they wanted, to the Pallative Care Unit of University Hospital Kerry. Everyone enjoyed the reunion and a chance for everyone to come together and share stories and memories which Paddy himself has plenty of. A whopping €800 has been donated and they are still counting. Well done Paddy. Fundraising Event Annascaul Adventures are delighted to share that
we have been able to make the following donations amounting to €800 to this year's chosen charities from the Inch beach half marathon and 10k which took place on 16 September. Could The War Of Independence Have Started In Annascaul? Noel O Murchú One hundred years ago this month in the village of Annascaul there happened an event which, if the outcome have been different, could have been described as the onset of the War of Independence in Ireland. As is now commonly acknowledged, the event that is considered the start of the War of Independence is the ambush and killing of two RIC men in Soloheadbeg in Tipperary on the 21th January 1919 by Dan Breen and his men. However, not many people realise that a similar ambush occurred in Annascaul a month previously, the 18th December 1918, 4 days after the general election, only that this ambush was unsuccessful. It happened just after the 1918 general election and this is the story: The 1918 general election was the first election since 1910, the 1915 election being cancelled due to the First World War. Sinn Féin was determined to use this opportunity to achieve a mandate for self-government. Their aim was to first gain a majority in the election, then set up their own Dáil in Dublin and force England to recognise this Dáil. They ran candidates all over Ireland, many of them unopposed and achieved a resounding success, winning 73 of the 105 seats on offer. Naturally enough, tensions were high in the run up to the elections and West Kerry was no exception to this. Despite the fact that Austin Stack was elected unopposed for the constituency, the area was unsettled prior to the election. In Annascaul on the 27h November, a local family, the Walsh’s, put a copy of the Sinn Féin manifesto up on the window of their house in the village. The local RIC took exception to this poster and the Sergeant, Sergeant Micheal Moloney and one of his constables, Constable Micheal Ryan, called to the house and asked the elderly occupants to remove it. They refused and Sergeant Moloney attempted to tear it down himself. However the owners put up a struggle and their two sons heard the commotion and rushed in. Patrick Walsh and Thomas Walsh were Volunteers in Annascaul. Indeed Thomas is named as Quartermaster of the Annascaul Company while Patrick is the Adjutant. They managed to prevent the two RIC men from removing the poster and in the process Sergeant Moloney was knocked to the ground. Reinforcements were sent for from Dingle and they proceeded to arrest the whole Walsh family and charged them under the Defence of the Realm act. The trial of the Walsh’s was set for Cork for the 17th December, three days after the election which took place on the 14th. The case against the two elderly parents and the two brothers was adjourned until January. The Kerryman of January 18th 1919 contains a detailed report of the trial of Thomas Walsh under the heading “People and Police in Annascaul”. In it Constable Ryan describes what happened as follows: “On the date in question he went to the house of John Walsh. There was a manifesto displayed in the window of the house and witness put his hand through the window and tried to remove the manifesto. Witness afterwards returned to the house and arrested Patrick J Walsh, brother of the accused. Patrick J Walsh resisted and was very violent and accused came to his assistance, put his arms around him and tried to rescue him and accused also called on a crowd of 40 or 50 persons to rescue him. There was a general election on at the time. Witness did not see the name of the election agent on the notices that were exhibited in the window of the house. He did not ask anyone in the house to remove the notices. The mother of Patrick J Walsh had a hold of her son and also three police. The old woman fell on the ground but did not receive any stroke and was not knocked down by any policeman”. As a result of what happened local Volunteers decided to take action against the Sergeant and the Constable. The lay in wait for them at Annascaul on the 18th as the two made their way back from the trial in Cork. When they alighted from the train, as they were making their way from the station to the barracks a local Volunteer lying in wait for them opened fire with a shotgun. Unfortunately, due to the distance involved and the heavy greycoat the Sergeant was wearing, he received only slight injuries to his leg and was removed to Dingle Hospital for treatment. The RIC monthly inspector’s report gives a description of what happened: “A daring outrage was committed on 18th December at Annascaul when 40 West Kerry Live
Sergeant Moloney was fired on and wounded in village of Annascaul at 8.15pm when returning from Cork where he had taken a D.O.R.A. prisoner to be tried by court martial. He received 30 grains of No 5 shot at 30 yards range. He is now convalescent. Three men have been arrested but it is doubtful if sufficient evidence can be obtained to convict them”. (RIC Monthly Inspectors report, National Archives, MFA/54/66) As it happened, Tadhg Kennedy from Annascaul and Intelligence Officer for the Kerry No 1 Brigade in the War of Independence was a passenger on the same train the RIC men were on and actually witnessed the shooting. Here is how he describes it on page 49 of his witness statement, (BMH W/S 1413): “I travelled on the train to Annascaul on the evening the sergeant and Constable O Regan came back from Cork. On coming out on the platform I was told by a young lad named John O'Shea that the sergeant was to be shot and I ran from the station towards the village and just as I reached my own house I saw a chap on one knee put up a shotgun and fire at the sergeant. Luckily the latter had a heavy greycoat over his uniform and the pellets, or most of them, were unable to penetrate the heavy overcoat. He was taken off to Dingle Hospital where he was found to be suffering only from shock. When he heard the shot the sergeant turned around before he started to run for the barracks and the only one he saw standing on the street was myself, but he said afterwards I would never fire on him as we were good friends”. As a result of the ambush on the RIC men, the village was invaded by a large number of police and military and a number of local men were arrested. Amongst them were Patrick Kennedy, Patrick T Kennedy, Patrick J Kennedy from Gurticurrane, his brother John and John O'Connor. They were all removed to Cork prison and held there for three to four weeks before being released due to lack of evidence. In his witness statement to the BMH, W/S 960, Patrick Walsh states that the man who fired the shot was John J O'Sullivan of Annascaul, who is now in America. The case against the Walsh family sat again in Cork Court on the 14th January and the two parents found not guilty. The case against Thomas resumed on the 15th and he was also found not guilty. (Kerryman Jan 18th 1919) Patricks Walsh’s case was adjourned until the following Friday. He was found guilty of assaulting and endangering the safety of two police constables and, on Thursday the 24th January, was sentenced to 84 days imprisonment with hard labour. (Cork Examiner January 24th 1919) Interestingly, the Kerryman of the 5th April 1919 reports about a case for compensation for his injuries taken by Sergeant Moloney at the Tralee Quarter Sessions. He was looking for £500 but eventually received £70 compensation for his troubles. Short Term Fix Mick McCarthy The Right Man For The Job With Euro 2020 Qualifiers On The Horizon. The Fourth Official Following a 0-0 draw with Denmark in Aarhus that book-ended a woeful run of results and with extreme public discontent brewing among fans regarding the national football team, the FAI acted, albeit probably far too late and took the decision to relieve manager Martin O’Neill and his assistant Roy Keane of their duties by “mutual-agreement”. With a swift appointment needed John Delaney and the FAI turned to the tried and trusted, in the form of former captain and manager Mick McCarthy, he was appointed on a two-year contract, reportedly worth €1.2 million per year. The main target for the 59-year-old is to guide Ireland to the 2020 European Championships, this will be paramount in the eyes of the financially orientated FAI with Dublin due to host three group games and one round of 16 game at the Aviva Stadium, but would also go a long way to getting the fans back on side and lifting the dire mood that currently hangs over the national team. McCarthy will be joined by Terry Connor his former assistant at Wolves and Ipswich as number two, with a man of legendary status as a player Robbie Keane joining as part of the coaching set-up. At his unveiling McCarthy was under no illusion as to the task at hand: “I am looking forward to getting started and embracing this challenge to qualify for Euro 2020, where it would be fantastic to play in front of the Ireland supporters in Aviva Stadium”. So, what of the appointment of McCarthy? On the face of it, it does appear to be a decision made by the FAI with short-term thinking very much to the fore. These sentiments were echoed by former Bohemians goalkeeper Shane Supple whom I interviewed recently, and he spoke on the appointment and the reasoning behind the FAI’s decision to opt for a candidate like Mick McCarthy “As for the appointment of Mick, it’s a short-term fix. Its’s a sensible enough one in the short term. Obviously with Euro 2020 coming up and the couple of games here in Dublin, I think it is important that we qualify, and Mick is the best man for that”. His opinion seems to be shared quite broadly among many supporters, and it would appear to be the case that a large majority of fans are content with the appointment of Mick McCarthy. This feel good factor coupled with the many bright up and coming Irish youngsters making in-roads at Premier League teams, seems to bode well for the future of Irish football. The elephant in the room however, was the appointment of former Dundalk and multiple League of Ireland winning manager Stephen Kenny to the role of U-21 manager on a two-year contract with an eye to Kenny replacing McCarthy at the end of his two-year spell in charge in November 2020. I touched on this with Supple recently and asked his view on the dual appointment “The Stephen Kenny situation is a real funny one. Obviously, the talk now is if Mick is doing really well and we’re playing great football and qualifying for tournaments, with the World Cup coming after that, why would you then bring Stephen Kenny in and ask Mick to step aside? It looks like they have tried to appease everyone and tried to satisfy all parties. It’s probably a political decision by the FAI to 46 West Kerry Live
try and keep everyone happy”. Now, as stated by Supple, here is where the FAI as they tend to do, have complicated matters. If let’s say Ireland do happen to qualify for the Euro’s, end up playing a home game at the Aviva and have a reasonably successful tournament. With fans duly satisfied with results and McCarthy it would be a strange situation to ask the man at the helm to politely step aside all in the name of a short-sighted decision taken two years previously. After all he could by then merit a new contract provided he qualifies for the Euro’s and the FAI feel obliged to do so. They’ve effectively tied their own hands and it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds as we look ahead to Euro 2020 qualifiers beginning in March 2019. For now, though, fans can look forward to a far more attractive style of football under McCarthy than previous manager Martin O’Neill. He has al-

The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust Billy Riordan was a young man from Dingle who died in Malawi C/ Africa in 1999. He had graduated from University College Galway. While backpacking in Malawi, he suffered a brain haemorrhage and died in a remote village on the shores of Lake Malawi. Billy’s mother, Mags Riordan travelled to the village in 2000. Finding a community with no access to health care she returned to Ireland and raised funds to construct a health clinic in memory of her son. The Billy Clinic opened in 2004. Depending solely on fundraising and contributions from individuals, today the clinic is a small hospital offering a wide range of medical services to the community of 16,000 people. It continues to be the only health service available in the area. In addition to out- patient and in-patient facilities, laboratory testing, an under- fives feeding programme, asthma , epilepsy, hypertension and HIV clinics and cataract surgery are all currently available through the clinic to one of the poorest communities in the world.

While cataract surgery is available at the clinic, fundraising has begun to provided much needed extension of the eye services There is more than 1 million people in the extended area. Eye testing and the provision of glasses for adults and children is an essential part of comprehensive medical care in a community. To celebrate the loving, laughing, irrepressible and irreplaceable force of life and light that Keady was the family and friends walked Ventry Beach. The sun shone warmly on the people gathered that day as they walked side by side and scattered wildflowers at the waters edge. On the day and in the weeks and months before and after the walk people generously donated to the Cork University Hospital Charity specifically to Ladybird ward where Keady was a part of the team who care for infants and children up to 18 months. They provide invaluable care and support to all the families. In Keady's memory €16,625 has been raised for Ladybird ward. The Clifford family would sincerely like to thank the community of the Dingle Peninsula, and friends far and wide, who not only generously supported this charity but have shown kindness and care to the family. People say that Dingle is beautiful, it's landscape, it's culture, it's food but we know that the most beautiful thing about Dingle is it's people. Kerry footballers Set Four Rugby Guinness World Records in One Morning Twelve Kerry footballers, including two 2018 All Ireland Minor Football winners, attempted four Official Guinness World Records in Castleisland Rugby Pitch recently. The record-breaking morning kicked off with Jason Hickson from Annascaul setting a new record of 12 for the Most Conversions in One Minute (Individual). To adhere to Guinness World Record guidelines, Jason had to kick from three positions along the 22-metre line: position A was midway between centre of pitch and left sideline; position B was on the centre of the 22; position C was midway between the centre of the pitch and the right sideline. He also had to alternate between all three positions, so there was quite a bit of running required to achieve the 1-minute record. Next, Jason Hickson was up again, but this time with his brother Eamonn. Both men have previously set Guinness World Records earlier this year, when Jason carried a weight of 100lb over a distance of 50km for just under 24 hours. Eamonn set a number of burpee-related records. The two brothers set a new Guinness World Record for the Most Conversions in 3 Minutes (Team of Two). The current record of 30 was a formidable standard, however, they equalled the mark over the three minutes. Two 2018 All Ireland Minor Football winners (Colm Moriarty and Killian Falvey) were up next to take the record from Virgin Media One’s (Formerly TV3) Ireland AM show, when they were part of the team of 11 to set the Most Conversions in One Minute (Team). They beat the mark by a solitary kick, getting 17 scores in one minute. Colm and Killian now add a world record to their stellar year, which included a Man of the Match display from Killian in the All Ireland Minor Football Final against Galway, while Colm was included in the Electric Ireland Minor All Star Team for 2018. They were ably assisted in the record breaking by another Kerry Minor All Ireland winner in Cathal Ferriter, who was part of the Kingdom’s winning team in 2017. Eamonn and Jason Hickson were called upon again for the final record of the day, one held by former Australia internationals Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell: Most rugby drop goals scored in three minutes (team of two). The Aussies had set 29 over three minutes, however, the Kerrymen surpassed that record 29 to achieve a total of 33. Castleisland Rugby Club was the perfect pitch in which to attempt and set the records, due to it’s good playing surface and sheltering perimeter of trees. In another well-attended AGM 2018 was reviewed on and off the field. There was an upbeat mood as chairperson Stephen Casey, secretary Finbar Casey, treasurer Johnny O’Connor and Coiste na nÓg chairperson Paudie McCarthy addressed the meeting. The key point was that our coaching - led by coaching officer Gavin O’Connor - has improved but there is more to do. We have a nucleus of strong underage players in each age category but we need to develop more players. Our mini maroons (which restarts again in January) is proving to be very successful and that is feeding into a number of new players and families joining the club. Our Scór officer, Eibhlín Hayes, was praised for all her efforts during the year - a year when Scór nationally celebrated its 50th anniversary. UNDER-12s: Our under-12s had an excellent year under the tutelage of Garry McGrath, Sinead Lavin, and Stephen Casey. They won all but two games this year and ended the year as Mid Kerry B champions. Many of these players also played with Scoil Réalt na Mara team that won the Mid Kerry 4-5 teacher school final in May. Their style of football is lovely and they show great heart and determination when wearing the Cromane jersey, well done to all on a superb year. It’s not all about winning but these players and friends are developing into fine footballers. UNDER-14s: Our under-14s (with Gavin O’Connor and Sean O’Reilly on the sideline from Cromane) started off the year in excellent form winning all their division games in the county league before being pipped in the semi-final by Churchill. This was a trend that repeated itself in 2018 as they were also pipped in the Central Region and Mid Kerry semi-finals. Still, there is plenty of talent in this group and next year brings an opportunity to right some of the difficulties they faced in 2018. Some other highlights at this level included Charlie Foley, Cian Lyons, and Jason O’Connor winning a county title with Mid Kerry in June. Jason was also part of the Kerry South Under-14 panel that took part in the prestigious Munster GAA Jim Power tournament in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, in July. UNDER-16s: At under-16 level, the GGC side (like our under-14s) started the year in explosive fashion. They, however, went one better as they went unbeaten all the way through their Central Region Division 2 campaign. This run led to a two-point
win over Ardfert in the final back in May. Cromane Benny McKeefry was part of the GGC management team along with Kristian O’Donovan from Glenbeigh-Glencar.
In the county junior championship, we were drawn in a group against Firies, Lispole, and Cordal. A tough ask for us resulted in three defeats.
This was the highlight of their season as a combination of player unavailability due to injuries, holidays, and illness meant they had a stop-start campaign after the high of that Central Region win. They went on to contest to Mid Kerry B final, before losing out to Keel-Listry.
Our seniors (trained by Gavin O’Connor with Stephen Casey and David Moroney as selectors) kept battling throughout the season and ended the year on a high by winning the Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup in October. We beat Glenbeigh-Glencar in Killorglin by 0-17 to 1-12 in an excellent decider. John Michael Foley was the Cromane captain.
Highlights at this level included Cromane’s Kieran O’Sullivan and Darragh McKeefry winning a county district under-16 title. Cromane Colin O’Sullivan was part of the management team. Kieran was also part of the Kerry under-16 development squad playing in numerous competitions throughout the country as he continued to develop into a fine footballer.
We were delighted to also field a junior team in this year’s county junior league (where we played Dr Crokes, St Michael’s/Foilmore, Waterville, and Listry) as well as competing in the junior championships where we had a convincing win over St Michael’s/Foilmore that qualified us for the Barrett Cup where we were beaten at home by Laune Rangers in the quarter-final.
Zein O'Flaherty and Jason O'Connor were part of the Killorglin Community College team that won the Munster Under-16 and half final against St Paul's of Waterford in Mallow back in May.

MINORS: The GGC minor team had an up and down year with the bulk of the side also playing senior football, meaning training sessions were limited. However, performances throughout the year were at a high standard. They competed well in Division 3 of the county league before exiting at the semi-final stage to a strong Fossa side in a four-point loss. There was then a significant gap in minor football before they played again. Effectively football was put on hold for the minor side during the summer. When play resumed they did quite well in the Mid Kerry minor championship. They reached the Mid Kerry A final before losing to Laune Rangers in Keel in horrid conditions. In parallel to this competition, they also competed in Division 2 of the Central Region. Again, performances were solid and in September they beat Milltown-Castlemaine in the semi-final by 2-11 to 0-6. They were in good form at this stage but for many frustrating reasons, the final of this competition was delayed and then hastily arranged for early December. At this stage, GGC were in a much weaker position with players unavailable for a multitude of reason and lost the final to John Mitchels by a goal. UNDER-21s: The GGC under-21s (with Paudie McCarthy involved on the management side from Cromane) won their first ever Mid Kerry title as an amalgamation on St Patrick’s Day beating Milltown-Castlemaine by a point after extra time in Beaufort.Cromane’s Darren Houlihan captained the side. SENIORS: Our seniors year got off to a decent start with early season wins in the Mid Kerry league against Glenbeigh-Glencar and Keel. The early games were in preparation for the delayed Munster Junior B final against Limerick’s Ballybrown. A tough day in Knockaderry meant our hopes of a second Munster final were dashed by a two-point loss: 0-11 to 1-10. We didn’t have long to lick our wounds as Division 4 of the county league was around the corner. We drew our first game away to Renard but then things just didn’t go our way. A series of narrow defeats knocked the stuffing out of our lads and we were relegated before we picked up our first win, away to Ballylongford.

The film Bohemian Rhapsody is a biopic about the band Queen, mainly focusing on the life of Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek (Mr Robot, Night at the Museum) does a fantastic job at portraying the legendary Freddie Mercury, teeth and all. The rest of the cast does a great job as their characters, most notably Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire) as John Reid and Ben Hardy (X-Men Apocalypse, Eastenders) as Roger Taylor. The plot of the film was also interesting, as it was fun to watch the band come up with their famous songs and the struggles along the way. The best parts of the film were definitely any point at which a Queen song was played. Out of all those moments the two best song parts were the recording of the titular song, Bohemian Rhapsody, and the extraordinary Live Aid concert at the end. The film not only follows that fame the band had, but also Freddie’s life as he deals with the attention and his homosexuality. The camerawork in the film is great with a few interesting mirror shots and the camera sweeping down into Wembley Stadium during the Live Aid concert was amazing.
