Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne

West Kerry Tractor Run Whether you think that the Massey is classy, that the Zeter is better or that you never need to fear because you have a John Deere, it’s time to polish your farm vehicle of choice for the 2019 Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne/West Kerry Tractor Run. The second Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne/West Kerry Tractor Run will take place on the weekend of Sunday 1st of December 2019. The lovely lads and ladies from Corca Dhuibhne Macra na Ferime are helping out this year to raise awareness and funds for the incredibly deserving West Kerry Mental Health Association. Gairdín Mhuire Day Care Centre and the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA) will be secondary beneficiaries. West Kerry Mental Health Association is one of a group of 105 autonomous local mental health associations which are active in assisting the mental health needs of their local communities and shares the mission of Mental Health Ireland (www.mentalhealth.ie). It provides a range of community services including advice and information on mental health issues in addition to providing education, training opportunities and social inclusion activities for people with mental health conditions. The association works in conjunction with the Tearmann Day Centre (based in Dingle Hospital) and aims to foster an environment conducive to mental health recovery based on effective treatments with respect for personal autonomy so that those who engage with the services can take control of their lives and reach their full potential. While the HSE provide funds for the staff at the Tearmann Day Centre, the work of the West Kerry Mental Health Association is entirely voluntary and they are fully dependent on donations from the public to provide these services.

There are many ways to support the event, even if you don’t have a tractor! You can donate via the Go Fund Me page on www.gofundme. com/west-kerry-tractor-run and volunteers will hold a bucket collection at various locations in Dingle town on Friday 29th of November. There will be a threshing demonstration in Dingle Mart at 1 o clock Saturday 30th November with lots of activities for kids and adults alike to partake in (further details will be published on social media, in local papers and on local radio and the next issue of WKL). Registration for the main event will take place from 11.00am at the former Lispole Fish Farm and the cavalcade will take off at 12 sharp (All road worthy insured tractors are welcome to take in the tractor run on Sunday 1st December (donations welcome in lieu of registration fee; Drivers only, no passengers)). It will follow the same route as last year (through Dingle Town to Ventry and back to Dingle via Rathinane and Baile na nÁith.) with the exception that it will travel up by Pairc an Aghasaigh and out the new relief road which should make for some excellent photos if you are standing at the top of the new Chapel Lane junction! The tractor run will finish up at the Marina Car Park with an auction to be held in The Marina Inn afterwards. The tractor run raised an incredible €43,000 last year which would not have been possible if it was not for the generosity of the West Kerry community. The committee would be extremely thankful for any sponsorship or donations contributed to support our worthy charities again this year. However, the event is about awareness as much as it is about fundraising so we would urge anyone who is unable to give financially to contribute by helping to raise profile of the charities and promote awareness of the important work they do. Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle film club on Tuesday 12th November will be the German drama Transit. As fascism spreads, German refugee Georg flees to Marseille and assumes the identity of the dead writer whose transit papers he is carrying. Living among refugees from around the world, Georg falls for Marie, a mysterious woman searching for her husband-the man whose identity he has stolen. Adapted from Anna Segher's 1942 novel, Transit transposes the original story to the present, blurring periods to create a timeless exploration of the plight of displaced people. The following week on Tuesday 19th the feature will be the Derry based comedy drama A Bump Along The Way. The film stars Bronagh Gallagher as Pamela a boozy 44-year-old single mother whose teenage daughter Allegra disapproves of her care-free lifestyle. Their fragile relationship is further tested when Pamela becomes pregnant after a one-night stand. Rocked by this unexpected pregnancy, both Pamela and Allegra are forced to grow and adapt to their new reality, while they deal with the judgement and small mindedness of others around them. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan GLAS PAYMENTS COMES EARLY GLAS payments valued at over €134m are being made two weeks earlier than last year and to a higher number of farmers than previous years of the scheme and represents an increase of 5,000 over the number of farmers paid in the first round last year These payments are a valuable support for farmers across Ireland and are a welcome boost to the wider rural economy. I am delighted that these payments have commenced ahead of schedule and 10 days earlier than last year. I have also secured EU Commission agreement for the higher advance payment rate of 85% for 2019. The payments will continue to be paid to individual farmers as they are cleared for payment. Farmers who have been contacted by the Department with queries in relation to their applications or have outstanding documentation such as Rare Breed or Low Emission Spreading Forms should respond and ensure they meet the Scheme requirements at their earliest convenience in order to facilitate payment. Among the key environmental gains under GLAS are: • The Low Input Permanent Pasture and the Traditional Hay Meadow actions are delivering over 317,000 hectare of diverse grassland species; • 210,000 Bat boxes and 207,000 Bird boxes have been positioned on Irish farms; • 19,000 hectares of Wild Bird Cover has been planted providing winter feed for farmland birds; •

Over 1.6m trees planted;

• Over 4,500 farmers are using Low Emission Slurry Spreading technologies to spread slurry. Gardaí reiterate regulations for gun holders The Garda have issued a statement reiterating the rules and regulations that gun holders must comply with. Recently, Gardaí in Co. Meath took to social media to remind gun holders – which include a substantial proportion of the farming community and rural dwellers – of their responsibilities under their licences. In the statement, Gardaí provided information on the topic of the storage of ammunition at home and while out hunting. For storage of ammunition for a relevant firearm, it was noted that a holder or an excepted person shall, when the relevant firearm is not in use, ensure that all ammunition for the relevant firearm in his or her possession is stored: in a receptacle that is locked, and separately from any firearm in which the ammunition is capable of being used. Regarding transport of a relevant firearm or ammunition, Gardaí stated that an owner of a firearm when transporting a firearm or ammunition in their car or other vehicle must ensure that: • The relevant firearm is: concealed from view; and stored separately from the ammunition; and •

The ammunition is stored in a receptacle that is locked”.

This is to comply with the European Communities (Acquisition and Possession of Weapons And Ammunition) (Amendment) Regulations 2019. Beam Payments To Roll In December The controversial BEAM scheme comes up for payment in December, and with an expected pay-out of €28 Million, compared with a budgeted €100 Million, it is nothing short of a disappointment. This leaves an unspent excess of €72 Million. But what did the Department of Agriculture expect. This scheme was to a large part supposedly to aid Beef/Dry-stock farmers in the more deprived South and West of the country. In return for what was in many cases a paltry few hundred euros, farmers were yet again expected to destock. Or their payment will be taken of them. Really, what did the Department expect. Did they really expect them to bend over? And there is now €72 Million in unspent money, with the possibility that this could be invested in a second year/payment on BEAM. This would only benefit those in the North East and Midlands who are already more prosperous, thus creating a two-tiered farming society, yet again. 10 West Kerry Live

There was potential €100 million available in funding, €50 million of which was EU funding while €50 million was national funding. However, with applications falling short of expectations Government spending under the scheme will now only total €28m. The controversial requirement under the scheme that farmers must reduce nitrogen production by 5pc was defended last week by Department of Agriculture General Secretary, Brendan Gleeson. He said the measure was a key EU requirement and that it was understandable because it was a market-support scheme. So, please Minister, have a look around you, and come out of my beloved Pale, and come down to Kerry to see where money needs to be invested. Also, instead you asking your D4 Peers what should “We” do with the money, perhaps you could come West or South and ask us. That’s all we ask. Almost 25% Of Farmers Withdraw From BDGP Almost a quarter of farmers who have signed onto the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) have withdrawn from the scheme since its inception. The figures show that there are currently 24,018 active participants in the BDGP scheme, while the number of applicants that have withdrawn from the scheme is 7,781. When these figures are combined, it results in a total figure for current and former participants of 31,799. The 7,781 figure of withdrawn participants represents approximately 24.5% of that total. Besides the BDGP, a large number of farmers also withdrew from the following schemes: The KT Scheme; GLAS; TAMS II; the Sheep Welfare Scheme; and the Hen Harrier Programme. The figures for the Knowledge Transfer Scheme show that it has 18,204 active participants, while 1,498 participants have previously withdrawn, for a total of 19,702 active and past participants. This equates to a 7.6% rate of withdrawn applicants. GLAS has 48,650 active participants, and 3,415 former applicants who have left the scheme. This totals 52,065, of which the withdrawn applicants make up 6.6%. For TAMS II, the number of current participants stands at 16,640, while 656 have previously withdrawn. This results in a total of current and former participants of 17,296, and a total withdrawal rate of 3.8%. The Sheep Welfare Scheme currently has 18,465 participants, and 1,507 former participants. These figure add to 19,972, with the withdrawal figure representing 7.5% of this number. However, the figure for the active participants in the Sheep Welfare Scheme represents the figure for year three of the scheme. The amount of withdrawals reflects the total withdrawals over the last three years. Finally, the Hen Harrier Programme had a noticeably lower rate of withdrawal: merely one single person has pulled out of the scheme, leaving 1,524 active participants. 40,000 Visitors Descend On Meath-Based Beef And Sheep Farm Over Halloween Season Here’s food for thought. Dingle is a hive of activity over the Halloween/ Mid-term Break. Hotels, Airbnbs, guesthouses and hostels are jam-packed. But with shorter evenings and more unpredictable weather, it is time that someone began to examine the possibility of entertaining these people. Halloween is a great time but could also be a great theme. The town and/ or it surrounds would be ideal for a themes annual event. Maybe it’s a mad idea, but it could be food for thought , for someone. Matt Murtagh, owner of Causey Farm, a 300ac sheep and beef farm in Co Meath, explained recently how he opted to diversify and earn his income in a rather ‘spooky’ fashion, explaining how the idea for the event Farmaphobia came about. Halloween is traditionally an Irish festival, and yours-truly would like to think that it originated in Co Meath. The great American tradition of hollowing out a pumpkin was inspired by the recently arrived Irish emigrants who use do similar with a turnip, (there’s not that many pumpkins in that same “lil-ole” county). History suggests that the Samhain autumn festival – now known as Halloween – can trace its origins to the Hill of Ward in Athboy, Co. Meath. Murtagh and his family have been playing Scooby-Doo for fifteen years, and decided to call it Farmaphobia just five years. It has since gone from strength-to-strength, peaking this year at a 40,000 attendance. It’s so busy that you can’t just arrive at their gates and say “Hi”. You need to book in advance.

Pat Hanafin

The event features five different zones: •

The Morgue;

World War II Zombies;

Alien-themed Area 51;

The Facility;

The Fun House (clowns).

Septic Tank Emptying & Drain Cleaning

|It all sounds serious fun and serious it is. This is a serious production and not just the case of hanging a few dead crows around the farm and playing a few eerie sounds. There are about 140 actors at the event on any night; it has become a huge production. It is high value entertainment, but it is not for small children. It’s pure fun but it will scare the living daylights (among other things) out of you.

With over 30 years in business providing a Septic Tank Cleaning Service in the Dingle Peninsula, we now provide DRAIN CLEANING. From 2” sink lines to 4” - 12” sewer pipes. Biocycle tanks filter system,washed after emptying. Providing power washing service and washing facility. 24 hour cover.

However, this is still a commercial farm, and cattle have to be brought to the factory, as on any other holding. The only difference is that Mr Murtagh isn’t as dependant on factory prices, as the rest of the country. Farmaphobia supplements his income considerably. And this is despite the large “production” costs. The point here is that it didn’t start out this big. It’s taken years to grow and each year you make some improvements and some mistakes but, year by year, it’s growing by about 5,000 visitors. Next year it will entertain about 46,000 to 50,000 people. That’s like filling Lansdowne Rd Stadim (I like the old name), or Thomand Park, twice. And the fact that it happens over the space of a week means that its only 7,000 people per day. They also do a Christmas event and tour activities for special events such as St Patricks Day and Easter, etc, getting a large number of get a lot of French and Chinese visitors in particular. – Food for Thought, eh!

Finding the Perfect Date! Irene Ní Fhlannúra No sooner than we realise that all that sugar has been damaging our health, we instinctively seek a healthier alternative. A wise move indeed but the marketeers are out there too, ready to pounce with the next best thing! Dates are just one of the many sugar substitutes lauded as a “healthy, guilt-free” treat that can take the edge off sugar cravings without any repercussions, or so we are told! Being an exotic, sweet-tasting delight, we readily accept what the food industry tells us about dates but let’s have a look at some of facts about them and then, like any good date, weigh up the pros and cons!

particularly proteins and healthy fats. While we are relatively new to the “dating” scene we can look to the East and learn from the experts who effortlessly maximize the health benefits and flavour of dates in their cooking. They usually pair them with nuts or fermented dairy foods for a sweet snack or bake them in breads. In savoury dishes you will find dates listed in recipes for tagines, Middle Eastern stews and rice salads, in which they complement meats, chickpeas, beans and vegetables. Now, you are up to date with dates, enjoy! • Cook, Talk, Eat with Irene - Winter Wellness Food Demo & Lunch. Sunday Nov 17th at Dingle Cookery School 11am – 2pm (see ad) •

Nowadays, worldwide consumption of dates have risen in response to a move towards healthier foodstuffs. In food processing, using date syrup or date paste is not considered an “added sugar”, providing a more sale-able alternative to refined sugar and glucose syrups. Although dates are much more expensive than refined sweeteners, manufacturers can demand a premium price for their product when it is labelled with “sugar-free”, “natural” and “no-added sugar”. They are excellent binding agents in baking, provide a wholefood source of sweetness and their moisture can mimic butter, making dates an excellent choice for plant-based desserts. Compared to regular sugar, dates win the nutrition stakes, hands down. They contain fibre, antioxidants, polyphenols, B vitamins and minerals but beware of the hype, they are highly calorific and 70% of their composition comes from a combination of fructose and glucose (sugars). One medjool date provides 70 calories and 16g of sugar – whoever stopped at just one? Like all good things, moderation is key!

WINTER WELLNESS IN THE KITCHEN

Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree (Phoenix Dactylifera), native to northern Africa and parts of the Middle East. Once known as Mesopotamia, this fertile region surrounds the Tigris- Euphrates river system. In modern days roughly corresponding to most of Iraq, Kuwait, eastern parts of Syria, Southeastern Turkey and regions along the Turkish-Syrian and Iran-Iraq borders. There is evidence of date cultivation as a food source as far back as 6000 BC and fossil records show that date palm tree existed 50 billion years ago. In religious and cultural traditions of these areas, dates feature highly in ceremonial rites, healing and a symbol of prosperity and triumph while also being a food staple for the regular folk throughout history and right up to today! They are considered sent from Paradise in Muslim tradition with numerous mentions in the Qur’an (Koran). Dates along with yogurt or milk are the first foods consumed after the sun has set during the sacred month of Ramadan, when Muslims observe fasting from food and drink during daylight hours. The Christian bible has more than thirty references to date palm, most notably when its branches lined the streets of Jerusalem for Jesus, on Palm Sunday. In middle ages they became a status symbol among the wealthy aristocrats across Europe, who often imitated food and fashion trends of their Arab counterparts.

There are many varieties of dates ranging in colour, size and sweetness. In European trading circles, “common dates” is the term designated to any dates that are not Deglet Noor or Medjool, which are considered superior. Common dates are often mixed varieties and were most likely the dates we Irish first encountered in Christmas pudding, sticky toffee pudding and even HP sauce. Aficionados of dates are more likely to choose the more expensive, luxurious varieties of Medjool and Deglet Noor, as they are sweeter, have a soft chewy texture and definitely posher! Most of the dates we import are dried and pitted although you can buy fresh dates in specialized stores. They are not as dehydrated as raisins or apricots, they still contain a fair bit of moisture, which is why you will find the best quality dates in a cool place or refrigerated. When buying dates look for vibrant, shiny colour from amber, to dark red to brown, depending on variety, stage of ripeness and age. They should be plump and soft. Avoid dates that are too sticky, hard or covered with crystallized sugar, which mean they are getting on in age, still edible but not as good as a younger date! Now is the time to squirrel away freshly harvested dates as they are in season from late September to January, with this year’s crop hitting our shelves from about now. Store in an airtight container in the fridge or freeze for up to 12 months.

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Lost in Brandon Bay From – Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 15 April 1874 The Laura, Norwegian barque, from Queenstown for Galway with maize, and the Nellie schooner, from Tarbert for Gloucester with oats, were both totally lost in Brandon Bay yesterday during a heavy NW gale. All hands were saved; those of the Norwegian vessel by the Dingle coastguard. The Nellie took fire before stranding.

Storm Wrecks From – Greenock Advertiser, 26 November 1850 The driver of the Dingle mail cart, just arrived in Tralee, reports that there were two vessels lost with all hands near that place last evening. Having missed the harbour, they were driven against the cliffs and went to pieces immediately. Also, that a vessel came on shore in Brandon Bay last evening and crew saved, excepting one man. The Neapolitan schooner, Errichetta, of Naples, from Barletta [south-east coast of Italy] was stranded on the south point of the entrance of Tralee Bay yesterday at 7.30 a.m. and has become a total wreck. Cargo lost. One man washed overboard before she stranded and the mate was drowned when the vessel parted amidships.

The Late Gale – Shipwrecks From – Kerry Evening Post, 18 October 1845 In our last issue we announced the ‘going ashore’ of the brig Princess Royal on Inch bar. We are happy to learn since that the master succeeded on Thursday in working her into Dingle harbour, where she will be repaired and refitted.

her anchors, and was driven out of the harbour. It was fortunate that there was not any one on board at the time. Two other vessels went ashore in the same area and every hand on board both of them was lost.

Pilots and Fishermen save Brigs From – Cork Constitution, 1 January 1856. Joseph Flaherty, pilot and some of the Dingle fishermen brought into Dingle Harbour two brigs which had been at anchor in a most dangerous place at the bottom of the bay near Valentia Island. One of them was within a cable’s length of the breakers and were it not for the gale subsiding they would have become total wrecks. One is a Greek vessel, the Loncianna, the other a Scotch vessel, the Struggler of Aberdeen.

Songs & Music for St James’ Church, Dingle On Sunday 29th December next, the West Kerry community will unite in a musical celebration for one of its oldest churches. Nestled in a site in the heart of the town with its roots inextricably linked to Dingle’s historic past, the church of St James has its sights set firmly on the future with a planned € 600,000 refurbishment programme which will ultimately enhance and secure its use as a shared spiritual, cultural and community space for both locals and visitors. In a true spirit of friendship and collaboration The Friends of St James, Dingle have partnered with St Mary’s Church, which will host this this once-off fundraising event. Headlined by the incomparable Sean Keane, classical songstress Linda Kenny, some very special guests and with Philip King as MC, this long anticipated evening is being organised to help defray some of the much needed project costs. Home of the celebrated Other Voices concert series (RTE2 TV) for the past 17 years and a weekly Sunday religious service, the church of St James also plays host to a number of cultural events throughout the town's rich cultural calendar, from Eoin Duignan’s seasonal folk music recitals to concerts and exhibitions during Féile na Bealtaine, the Dingle Folk Fest, the Dingle Trad Fest among others. Hence it is fitting, that this tiny church, which bridges Dingle's past, present and future, should be the catalyst for this fundraising drive that is being embraced by the community of West Kerry and beyond. Songs & Music for St James’ Dingle takes place in St Mary’s Church, Dingle on Sunday 29th December 2019 at 7.30pm. Tickets €35 from www.eventbrite.ie, The Dingle Record Shop, Green Street, Neligan’s bar and Paul Geaney’s pub, Main Street, Dingle.

Taking to the stage in St. James' church will be Chicago-based band WHITNEY led by vocalist/drummer Julien Ehrlich and guitarist Max Kakacek, they released their sophomore album, Forever Turned Around, earlier this year. The follow up to their much-beloved debut, 2016’s Light Upon the Lake. Forever Turned Around was co-produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver) and Jonathan Rado. Whitney has a full-fledged live band with keyboardist Malcolm Brown, guitarist Print Chouteau, bassist Josiah Marshall, and trumpeter Will Miller. Dublin based, hip-hop artist JAFARIS received critical praise for his debut album Stride, which earned him his place as one of Ireland’s foremost players of the new generation of Irish hip-hop. With the release of his EP in 2017, Jafaris produces nostalgic nineties hip hop and pure, contagious happiness. NME described Jafaris as “one of the most exciting new prospects from Irish rap’s rising wave”. Derry singer SOAK released her debut album Before We Forgot How to Dream in 2015 which won the Choice Music Prize Album of the Year. The Guardian described Soak’s music as 'a vivid portrait of teenage deepthinking'. Earlier this year, Soaks’s second album Grim Town was released to rave reviews. Watch the lead single Déjà Vu taken from Grim Town. Dublin-based five-piece THE MURDER CAPITAL have built a formidable reputation. They have been included in The Guardian’s Ones to Watch 2019, NME’s 100 Essential New Artists for 2019 and The Irish Times calling them out as Ireland’s best new rock band. The live version of their latest video for 'More Is Less' went viral and forged the band's breakthrough. Their debut album 'When I Have Fears' reached a Top 20 chart position in the UK, and a #2 position in Ireland. Australian songwriter ANGIE MCMAHON is the twenty-something heroine you can relate to and root for; her charming, honest songs about life, love, and comfort food. Her debut album Salt is stocked with the raw, honest anthems – like ‘Slow Mover’, ‘Missing Me’, and ‘Pasta’ – that have enraptured fans and charts. Drawing inspiration from Bruce Springsteen, Lianne La Havas and Big Thief, her music ranges from punchy rock to whispering ballads but hums with realness of a true original.

A longstanding OV favourite, Jim Carroll’s BANTER will return to Foxy John’s for two days of thought-provoking discussions and a series of intimate performances. Cost Saving Energy Tips home Are You Entitled To AatRefund Of Tax?

It is worth the effort to check and see if you’re entitled to any tax refunds. The online service provided by Revenue isn’t complicated and it could mean a tax refund of around €1,000, paid directly into your account. That would be a nice early Christmas present for anyone!

YOUR MONEY MATTERS

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Many of us are reluctant to take the time to deal with tax issues but this reluctance is costing us money every year, and in many cases, quite a significant amount. According to the main independent providers Heating & Insulation: This takes up a huge proportion of our energy bills so conserving heat will of you money. To find out if you’re entitled to a refund you can request an End of Year Statement (P21) from Revenue, and this again can be also done online through myAccount.

Home-Carer Tax Credit: This allowance can be claimed by a stay-at-home parent who is looking after their own children or caring for a dependent person. The maximum tax relief available for the 2019 tax year is €1,500. The carer may earn up to €7,200 and still be entitled to the full tax credit, this will be less if the claimant earns over €7,200 per year. You can only claim one credit, regardless of the number of people you care for. You can also claim if you are the carer of a relative who doesn’t live with you, but must live within 2km of your home. The terms and conditions of the Home-Carer Tax Credit are explained on the Revenue website. Education: Significant tax relief is available for full or part-time third level courses, either for yourself or your child. Tax relief can be claimed on tuition fees for eligible education courses. For amounts over €3,000 (full time course) tax relief is available at 20% with an upper limit of €7,000, but there is no limit on the number of individuals for whom you can claim. No relief is available for examination, registration or administration fees. How to claim tax relief: The easiest way to claim any tax relief is online through myAccount on the Revenue website or through their RevApp. You’ll need to have your PPSN to register but once registered you can access all of their services, and you can check to see which of the above tax reliefs you’re availing of and you can register for any that you haven’t yet availed of. You can also check your End of Year Balancing Statement (P21), as mentioned above, for up to four previous tax years. This will let you know if you’ve overpaid any income tax or USC and if you register your bank account or Credit Union account details with Revenue, they’ll pay any refund due straight back into your account. If you are unable to use myAccount you can contact the Revenue office directly by phone. Similarly you can claim tax relief on medical expenses through myAccount or offline by completing a paper version of the Form 12. You can request a Form 12 from Revenue by phoning the regional office at (066)7161000. If you feel that you don’t have the time or the patience to go about this 26 West Kerry Live

The course, a series of 8 evening workshops, is suitable for all levels and will cover a variety of writing genres. The emphasis will be on techniques and exercises that generate work. The course will examine the process of writing — making, judging and knowing — and refer to the work of contemporary writers. While the emphasis will be on creative writing, the course will improve the writing style of people who also need to write for work. Be inspired! Book your place now. Cost: €80 for 8 weeks. www.dinglehub.com On Tuesday last we hosted a visit from the Commission for Communications Regulation. It proved to be a day of insightful discussion on the challenges of climate change and the opportunities for digitisation to help combat these challenges. Many thanks to Denis Galvin, Lispole who hosted a site visit from the Commissioners to see first hand the use of IoT technology on his farm. All industries are currently undergoing digital transformation and it is important that we understand what this means for agriculture and the ways in which it can support the sustainability and viability of our farms, and critically our food security, into the future. We are only at the start of unlocking the potential benefits of digitisation with the support of all of our Ambassador Farmers but it’s exciting that this learning is happening here on the Dingle Peninsula. There are a number of technology and software firms that are considering Dingle as an option for their growing teams. A key factor in their decision to locate here will be the availability of skills in the area and, while the majority of jobs will be coding based, they will also value a wider range of skills in areas such as administration, training and creativity to name but a few. Anecdotally, we know that there is a wealth of talent here on the Peninsula and even more among those who are considering a move to the area. However, attracting these companies will take more than

anecdotal evidence and so we need to build a strong database of all of these skills. Please help by completing the very short survey that can be found on www.workindingle.ie and ask all of those you know may be interested to do the same. The main goal of the Dingle Hub is to create viable and sustainable jobs on the Dingle Peninsula. This is achieved through organising workshops, events, projects, community engagement, etc. and supported by funding and grant assistance. We work in three main areas - Digital Transformation, Environmental Sustainability and Creative Industries. Come and have a chat if you have an idea for a project/event/workshop that would be beneficial to the community and contribute to job creation. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1Gbps of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. One Small Change The Plastic Problem This was supposed to be a very straightforward article on how to reduce the use of single use plastics such as cling film in our homes, but an internet search looking for a few statistics on plastics (using the Ecosia search engine of course) brought me down a black hole of scientific articles and opinion pieces on plastics, consumerism and sustainability. They described the complex relationship we have with this ubiquitous material and the incredibly difficult problems we face in tackling the detrimental effects of its overuse. First of all, despite all the bad press plastics receive it is very important to acknowledge that they are a group of innovative products that are critical to modern living. The development of computers, technology and modern healthcare would have been impossible without the use of these sanitary, inexpensive and pliable substances. More clothing is made from plastics (e.g. polyester, rayon, fleece) than natural materials, it’s a major component in transport vehicles, its used for children toys, its used to package our food and a lot of the ‘stuff’ we purchase is made from plastic. It has raised the standard of living by replacing expensive heavy natural materials with lighter, safer and stronger elements. However, plastic is everywhere not necessarily because it was always better or more suitable than the natural materials it replaced but because it is much cheaper and thus easier to justify throwing it away. While plastic requires a huge amount of natural non-renewable resources and energy to manufacture, the main problem we can now identify is its disposal. 79% of all the plastic produced in the past 70 years has been thrown away, either to landfill or into the general environment where they can take up to 500 years to break down. As it degrades it breaks down into smaller pieces of plastic known as micro plastics and It is estimated that there are 500 times more pieces of micro plastic in the sea than there are stars in the galaxy. Some of these are toxic but even the non-toxic plastics are dangerous as they are being ingested by animals and accumulate up the food chain. Only 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled but even though we should and could increase this percentage it is important to note that recycling is a limited solution as most plastics can only be recycled once. Global use of plastic has increased from 15 million tonnes in 1964 to 311 million tonnes in 2014 and despite environmental campaigning this figure is set to double in the next 20 years. This is very simply because plastic equals profits.

A productive economy demands that we make consumption a way of life and companies are taking advantage of our society’s culture of convenience. 90% of plastics are derived from virgin fossil fuels and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that fossil fuel companies (100 fossil fuel companies are responsible for 70% of all greenhouse gas emissions) are major owners and investors in plastic manufacturing. Large investment banks and asset management companies in turn invest in the stocks and shares of the fossil fuel companies and all this wealth means that these industries are very powerful lobbying groups (they put tobacco companies to shame!) when it comes to resisting the efforts of governments to legislate against the overuse and misuse of plastics. This type of information can be very disheartening and would make you question whether the actions of individuals can truly make a difference. The recent EU Single Use Plastic (SUP) Directive 2019 which will see 10 of the most commonly found SUP plastics (e.g. plastic straws, cotton buds, plastic cutlery) in the environment banned by 2021 is however a testament to the lobbying power of individuals. It is part of the EU plastics strategy, which is finally taking into account the entire life cycle of plastics (e.g. how they are designed, produced, used and disposed of) and taking measures accordingly. Other actions such as a proposed ban on the EU Bank from investing in fossil fuel companies are all steps in the right direction brought about by increasing pressure on governments from their citizens. Aside from lobbying local councils and T.Ds, the most important thing we can do as individuals is address our consumerism. Living sustainably has to be about reducing the quantity of what we buy, reusing what we have and changing our habits (Avoid, Reduce, Reuse). So much advice on how to be ‘eco-friendly’ involves marketing slightly less toxic alternatives to ‘stuff’ we don’t particularly need to distract us from thinking about whether they were necessary in the first place. An excellent example of this is the plastic straw. The SUP directive has led to some very clever marketing by companies to convince us that switching to paper or metal straws will have a beneficial environmental impact and save the turtles. While these alternatives are preferable to plastics, the fact most of us are more than capable of drinking straight from a glass without the need for any straw is conveniently ignored.

damaged rolls that drive you demented because the full length does not tear off smoothly). It is not usually recyclable because its light weight tends to clog machines and besides it is usually contaminated with food stuffs. It is a product that we use on a daily basis without considering the real need for it or the alternatives to its use. So this week ditch the cling by trying these reusable alternatives. 1.

Place food in a bowl and put a plate on top of it.

2.

Glass jars with lids are perfect for storing leftovers in your fridge.

3.

To tick the box in terms of reusing and reducing plastics consider using Tupperware, repurposed butter and ice cream containers etc., and plastic wrappers such as those around sliced pans to store foods and to transport lunches etc. in.

4. Beeswax wraps are thin cotton cloths coated with food grade beeswax and jojoba oil (which have antimicrobial and antiseptic properties) to make them waterproof and pliable which are a reusable alternative to cling film. Most on sale use new brightly coloured cotton fabrics which decreases their environmental credentials as the production of cotton fabric has a high carbon footprint but Tonnie Lemmens from Dingle repurposes cotton clothing to make her beeswax wraps making them far more sustainable. They can be purchased in the Dingle Health Food Shop and The Little Cheese Shop. "We should be using paper straws instead of plastic!" "We should be using metal straws instead of plastic!" Me, an intellectual:

And so with all this in mind, I return to cling-film, the proposed original subject of this week’s one small change. In the general scheme of the environmental crisis, the cling film we use in our homes is not a top priority but yet it adds to all our other plastic waste (especially if you get one of those slightly

Dingle Whiskey Tasting For an interesting November evening, join the Dingle chapter of the Irish Whiskey Society at John Benny’s Pub from 8:00 on Friday, 8th November for a one-of-a-kind tasting. To better understand the intricacies of the relationship between wood and whiskey and the direct influence of the barrel and its 'former resident’ on whiskey, chef Trevis Gleason will take the group on a journey “into the woods” We’ll taste wines and spirits which were once stored the casks in which the Dingle Whiskey Distillery now ages their famous whiskey. From Bourbon to Port and a wide variety of fortified Sherry wines and beyond the tasting will allow participants to taste whiskey from the casks as well as the previous occupants of the barrels. Side-by-side we'll sample the former and latter tenants of oak to see what the first fill took from and gave to the wood, then what was passed on to whiskey in turn. As a special treat, the newly appointed Master Distiller of Dingle, Graham Coull, formerly of Glen Moray in Scotland, will be on hand to meet members of the Society our guests and we’re told we may even taste the fruits of his former labour in the same manner - alongside the former residents of a storied Glen Moray cask. We very much look forward to welcoming Graham to Dingle on the night. Because, why "wooden't" we??? NEWKD Dingle News SOCIO-ECONOMIC SURVEY NEWKD has contracted with the Gesera Institute of Action Research, with the support of MaRei and South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP), to undertake a Socio-Economic profile of the Dingle Peninsula area during the next few months. This will provide facts and insights for communities, which will be of use in future funding applications, and for planning and addressing the future needs of each community. There are 2 elements to this study. One is desk- research study which will draw on factual information gathered from the 2016 and 2006 Census of Population. This will provide a quantitative demographic and socio-economic description of the peninsula in respect of such elements as population numbers, household and family types, gender, age, nationality/ ethnicity, use of Irish language, levels of educational attainment, occupation, and employment status, travel to work times etc. This will establish an information baseline, identify possible development opportunities and provide an opportunity to engage with community and stakeholders in evidence – based / planning and decision making discussions.. The second element to this study is the hosting of a series of community meetings on the peninsula. At these, the facilitators will present the main findings from the demographic and socio-economic profile. Members of the community are invited to give feedback on the implications, the strengths and challenges and what can be done about these- What strategies and actions need to be put in place to enable the community to grow and develop in a way that is economically feasible, socially progressive and environmentally friendly? Connor Mc Gookin student based out of the MaREI Centre, is interested in better understanding what the transition to a low carbon future will mean for the community. As a part of this socio economic study, his work will explore people’s opinions of the required changes to our energy system. Further information upon these meetings can be gained from Máire Uí Léime, Chair of NEWKD Community Network in West Kerry (086)158 1218, and the NEWKD office in Dingle (066)714 2788. The following locations along with dates are listed; Lispole Community Hall: Tuesday November 12th at 7.30pm

•Shoppers surveys to rate visitor experience and satisfaction; and •Business owner surveys to establish current levels of commercial activity and outlook. North East West Kerry Development (NEWKD), are facilitating this process. Students from the Institute of Technology Tralee are also getting involved and will working under the guidance of Martha Farrell, lecturer in the School of Business Computing & Humanities, ITT. The data collected during the Dingle Town Check survey work should enable local businesses owners, local business representative groups, local citizens and the local authority assess how Dingle Town Centre is performing and will facilitate them in developing strategies for the future development of the town. Members of the public and business owners are encouraged to participate and give their views on their experiences in the town centre. It is an opportunity to shape the town centre and strengthen it into the future, to build on its attractiveness as a place to work, live and visit. During the month of October, students will be calling into premises and surveying on the street in Dingle town centre. Therefore, North East West Kerry Development, the Dingle Business Chamber, Town Health Check Steering Group, respectfully ask that assistance be given to the Institute of Technology Tralee Students conducting this survey work. Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá Oíche na bPúcaí gafa tharainn agus is mó duine go mbíonn a leagan féin acu ar an ócáid, ach is baolach ná bacann mórán léi. Bhíodh anchleachta ní ró fhada ó shoin ach níl aon suim ag furmhór don aois óg mheasfá i bpúcaí an lae inniu. Bíonn tinte chnámh i scata áiteanna fós go mór mhór sna cathracha. Fágaimis go fóill é mar scéal. Tá trí seachtaine ó shoin a chuala daoine ar an raidió agus ar an dteilifís ag caitheamh tharstu fén Nollaig. Ní ar Dhia ná ar Phápa atá na daoine seo ag caint ach féasta na Nollag. Is baolach gur mó líontí ná bíonn an t-airgead acu agus cuid acu gan dídean. Is mó duine go mbeadh saol mar sin, ag scata arís sna bailte móra. Ól agus drugaí. Is dócha nach ró-fhada ó bhaile uainn an saol sin. Buaileann sé saibhir agus daibhir agus maraíotar daoine a cheileann díol as na drugaí. Is dócha gur fuirist bheith ag caint ach measaim gur cheart lucht soláthar na drugaí a chur fé ghlas ar feadh tamaill fhada. I gcásanna cuireann siad eagla ar na Gardaí. Níl aon eagla ar chuid dos na daoine seo, nách bhfuil ina gceann ach breis ainniseóir a tharrac trí ithir an mhí-áidh agus na hainnise. Is dóigh liom gur ceart a chur ar a súile do daoine óga, atá ag pósadh mar shampla, gur cheart dóibh gach iarracht a dheánamh le tigh a thógaint, ach ní mar sin a bhíonn ach daoine ag súil le tithe Comhairle Contae. Go dearfa ní bhíonn aon leigheas ag scata ar an gcás seo agus is ceart féachaint i ndiaidh daoine gan gustal. Ní ritheann an saol le gach aon duine. Ach tá an aigne ann gur ceart pósadh fiú má tá an duine ar an mbeagán agus brú a chur ar an stát tigh a chur ar fáil. Tá dhá thaobh ar gach scéal. Is cuimhin liom lá a cuireadh ceist ar fhear sa chomhluadar conas nár phós sé, ‘tá mo dhóthain le déanamh agam’, ar sé ‘gan duine eile a chotháil’. M’fhéidir d’fhéadfadh go mbeadh airgead ag an mbean, ‘má tá’ arsa an chéad fhear ní ar mo leithéid seo a chaithfeadh siad é’. ‘Caint gan déaramh atá agaibh’, ar sé, agus is dócha go raibh an ceart aige.

Oireachtas Is baolach ná raibh ar mo chumas freastal ar an Óireachtas. i mbliana. Is beag ceann a chailleas le blianta fada. Ní bhíonn rith maith ag an each i gcónaí. Ach nár dhein Sláine go diail i gcomórtas na mban, bail ó Dhia uirthi agus an hÓgánach óg ó Dhun Chaoin agus an cailín ceolmhar Ciara de Mórdha ós na nGort Dubha. Bás Is baolach go bhfuair beirt sean-chairde dhom bás le déanaí. Is mó lá fliuch agus cruaidh a sheas Seán Ó Ceallachin ag geata an booth vótála dhom. Fear go raibh mórán amhrán aige. Bhuaidh sé craobh amhrán an Oireachtais sa bliain 1987. Cuireadh a rogha amhrán ar dhlúth dhiosca. Bhí dhá bhliain agus naocha slánathe aige. Déarfad sé amhrán go binn go deire. Fuair Páid Ó Dubháin ón bhFearann bás an tseactain seo in aois cheithre bhliain agus naocha. Bhí ceathrar cailíní agus beirt mhac ceathair air agus a chéile Siobhán. Fuair Siobán ní Scanláin bás deich mbliana ó shoin. Bhí beirt bhuachaillí ag ceathrar cailín ortha. Is mó scéal seoigh a bhíodh aige nuair a bhuailimís le chéile ag an gCreamaraí. Aris fear go raibh an- chion agam air.Fear a oibrigh cruaidh gan dua, dá bhean agus a gclann. Ní raibh sé sílteach ar an dtábharne ná ag diúl tobac.Beidh siad ag ámhrán agus ag scéaltóireacht sna Flaithis Beannacht dílis De leis an mbeirt agaibh.

Má tá daoine coitianta ar an ndrabhlás níl rómpa ach mí-adh. Sport Níl sé ró fhada ó shoin go raibh lucht an eolais ag dearbhú go mbeadh craobh an domhain againne. Baineadh leathadh as ár radhhac - bhuaidh na Seapánaigh ortha agus foireann éigin eile. Bheadh sé níos fearr acu fanacht ‘ge baile. Má bhí na Sasanaigh sna stáraibh níor chás dóibh. Bhuadar ar an tSualainn Nua nó na ‘All Blacks’ ach is baolach gur chuir an Aifric Theas cimear ortha. Bhíodar lán chinnte go mbeadh an lá leo- is beag an trua a bheadh ag cuid againn dóibh.

An chéad scéal a bíonn ag RTÉ tréis na nuachta go minic anois ná cé a dhein gaisce ar fhaichí sacair Shasana. Nách diail an cúram é. An mbeadh aon tagairt thall fé ghaiscí iománaithe nó lucht caide na hÉireann. Faic a bhuachaill. Rud a chuireann iontas orm ná cé chomh maith is a dheineann an Íoslainn sa tsacar áit nách bhfuil leath-mhilliún duine. Nár cheart dos na húdaráis sacair na tíortha beaga mar San Marino, Gibaráltar, Andorra a sraith féin bheitacu seachas a bheith ag déanamh gabhair dóibh. Brexit Níl aon amhras ach go bhfuil poiliteóirí na Breataine imithe chun an chnoic. Cuid aca ag iarraidh fanacht mar bhí, cuid eile ag éileamh éirí scon scan as aon iarrachtaí ar aon mhargadh. ‘Tá an Bhreatain abalta aghaidh thabairt ar mhargí an domhan’, arsa sean- Chaomhach. Tá scata mar é ann. Tá Johnson, fear na fuil aon chuileanna air ach ag iaraidh brú ar aghaidh agus stádas éigin a bheith ag Éirinn[ na sé Chontae, cinnte]. Cuimhnigh go raibh an príomh aire i Sasana, roimh Johnson, á dúirt fé dhó go gcaithfí aitheantas ceart a thabhairt do Chomhaontas Aoine an Chéasta. Ní ró - fhada ina diaidh sin go ndein sí dearmad glan orainn. Agus dhéanfadh an fear atá anois amhlaidh ach tá scata tíortha san Aontas Earpach atá báidhúil le hÉirinn agus na hAlbanaigh atá ar thóir aitheantas mar thír neamhspleách a bheith acu. Rules for operating drones Question I am buying a drone for my son as a gift this Christmas. What are the rules for flying it? Answer Drones and model aircraft are both considered small unmanned aircraft and the same rules apply to their operation. The rules are set out in the Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) and Rockets Order 2015 (SI 563/2015). In June 2019 the European Union published new drone regulations, which will come into force in the coming years. For the time being, drones will continue to be regulated under national legislation. All drones weighing 1kg or more must be registered with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). This includes the weight of the battery and all attached equipment, including cargo, at the start of its flight. You register your drone online at iaa.ie/drones. Your son must be over 16 years of age to register the drone, otherwise it must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. If your drone weighs 4kg or more, you must complete a drone safety training course before operating it. You must not operate a drone in a negligent or reckless manner which would endanger the life or property of others. You must not operate a drone: • Farther than 300 metres from you or out of your direct line of sight •

Over 120 metres above ground level

• Over urban areas or over a group of 12 or more people • Within 120 metres of any person, vessel or structure not under your control

• Closer than 5 kilometres from an aerodrome • If it will be a hazard to another aircraft in flight • In civil or military controlled airspace or in restricted areas such as prisons If you want to operate your drone outside these limits, you must apply to the IAA for a specific operating permission and complete a drone safety training course. You must have permission from the landowner for take-off and landing. There may be privacy or trespass issues if you operate a drone over private property. While you do not need insurance to operate a drone it is recommended that you are insured and that you complete a drone safety training course. Duck Breast, Honey Roast parsnip, Red Wine Sauce Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Method

It is now easy to pick up really good duck breasts in your local shops. Look out for Skeaghanore Duck from West Cork or Silver Hill. Duck makes such a great meal. It is easy to cook and goes well so many different vegetables. When thinking of what goes best with duck just remember it is rich so try to pair it with some sweetness and maybe something acidic.

Add the parsnip to a pot of boiling salted water, cook for about 6 minutes. Remove the parsnips from the water and allow them to sit for a few minutes to remove as much steam and moisture as possible. Remove the tray from the oven and drizzle a little oil on the tray. Season the parsnips with salt and pepper and some of the thyme leaves. Place the parsnips on the hot tray. Put this in the oven and cook for about 20-25 minutes. Once they are cooked and nice and brown add a the honey and cook for about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the oven and season and add the remaining thyme leaves.

For this recipe I have included some roast parsnip finished with a little honey and then the sauce has a little redcurrant jelly in it too. This will give a nice sweetness. Another vegetable that goes so well with duck is red cabbage cooked in a little cider, a pinch of brown sugar and a little vinegar for about an hour and a half. One of the best tricks when cooking duck breast is to pan fry it on a pan over low to medium heat with no oil and with the skin side down, this will allow plenty of the fat to render and leave the finished dish and then you will have a nice crispy skin on the duck too. We are very grateful to have received an award for Best Cookery School in Ireland and we would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for all their hard work and a special thanks to all of you who continue to support us, we really appreciate it. Ingredients for the duck 1 duck breast per person (you may get away 2 duck breasts for 3 people) salt and pepper

for the parsnip Heat the oven to 200ÂşC, place a tray in the oven.

potatoes). Turn the heat up slightly and continue to cook, this will allow the skin to become crispy. Cook for another 2-3 minutes and then turn it over and turn the pan off, allow this to rest in the hot pan for about 5 minutes. This will give you time to finish the sauce and parsnips. to serve Place some of the parsnips on the centre of the plate, slice the duck and place it on top. Spoon some of the sauce over it. Bain taitneamh as!!!

for the sauce In a small pot add a little oil then add the shallots and a pinch of salt. Let this cook for about 5 minutes over a low heat, add the garlic and the rosemary, cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the redcurrant jelly followed by the wine. Allow this to cook until it has reduced by half. Add the vinegar and then the chicken stock and again allow this to reduce. Cook it for about 10-15 minutes over medium heat. Strain the sauce and season and reduce further if you want a thicker sauce. for the duck This can be done while the parsnips and sauce are cooking. Put a pan on over low-medium heat. Score the skin with a sharp knife then season the duck breast well with salt and pepper. Place the skin side on the pan. Allow this to cook for about 5 minutes. Remove some of the excess fat into a bowl (you can use this at a later stage to cook

for the parsnip 4 medium sized parsnips cut in half lengthways small bunch of fresh thyme leaves oil salt and pepper 1 tbsp. of honey salt and pepper for the sauce 1 shallot diced 1 garlic crushed 1 sprig of rosemary 1 tsp. of redcurrant jelly 100ml of red wine or port dash of red wine vinegar 150ml of dark chicken stock salt and pepper

Some of the participants in the 54321 Challenge with a cheque for over â‚Ź72,000 which will be donated to the group's three nominated charities: Kerry Hospice, Skellig Stars and Dingle Coast & Cliff Rescue. The challenge which took place in August involved teams cycling the Ring of Kerry, climbing Carrauntoohil, cycling from Killarney to Mount Brandon, Climbing Mount Brandon and cycling from Dingle to Killarney over the course of 4 days West Kerry Live 47

Movie Review Terminator: Dark Fate Imeacht Faisnéise - Saor

Tom Ó Neachtain

Free Parenting Awareness Information Event- Drop in

Terminator: Dark Fate is the new re-imagining of the Terminator franchise, and is set in an alternate timeline from the last three movies. It follows a group of people being chased across the country by a terminator sent from the future, trying to kill them. The main issue that people have with this movie is that it “borrows” heavily from the first two films, and this is evident throughout. The movie is supposed to be a direct sequel to the second terminator but feels a bit like a remake. It has a very similar plot and a lot of the action sequences play out in the same way.

Wednesday 20th of November @10.30am- 1p.m. in Áiseanna na hÓige, Dingle Dé Céadaoin 20ú Samhain ag 10.30a.m -1i.n

Like T-2 this terminator is liquid based and I really like how the filmmakers use its abilities in creative ways. Also I think the cast do a good job and they constructed some very good characters to add to the ongoing story. I guess James Cameron just has a very good way of writing female protagonists. Near the middle of the film the pacing gets very slow compared to the fast paced first and third acts. As the story progresses the action becomes less frequent and there might be one too many scenes stuffed with exposition. The classic T-800 shows up near the final third and somehow gets all the funniest lines. The final showdown is very well staged and has great payoff! It is clear that Terminator: Dark Fate has talent in front and behind the camera and fits nicely into the Terminator canon. The writing is sharp and the action is very well done, the best sequel since Terminator 2. It’s easy to see why James Cameron returned to the franchise which he created.

Úna-Minh Kavanagh foilsithe ag

New Island ‘In 2013, Úna-Minh Kavanagh, a young journalist and content creator, was racially abused and spat upon in Dublin’s city centre. Having dealt with racism throughout her young life, this proud Kerrywoman (ó Bhaile na nGall a muintir) had finally had enough. In the days that followed, she took to Twitter to call out the ‘land of a thousand welcomes’ for its naivety and cowardice in dealing with racism. The incident was widely shared in the media and her story went viral. But Úna-Minh’s story actually begins in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1991, when she was adopted at just three days old by a single woman from Kerry. Raised in a loving, Irish-speaking home by her mother and grandfather, Úna-Minh was instilled with an enduring sense of her multi-faceted Irish identity. In her first book, she writes honestly and humorously about tackling racism, language elitism and online trolls and the joy of turning her love of the internet, video games and accessible Irish-language content into a healthy work/ life balance. Sprinkled throughout with Úna-Minh’s own ‘FrásaAnLae’, Anseo is the heartwarming story of a diverse and contemporary Irish life.’ - New Island - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979
