Farming News Louis Murchan Beef Plan Calls For Suspension Of Polish Meat Imports Amid ASF Fears The Beef Plan Movement has announced that it will call for the suspension of meat imports into Ireland from Poland, citing the biosecurity risks of African swine fever (ASF). In a statement, the group said that “it identifies African swine fever (ASF) as posing a potential threat to our beef industry, with importation of beef from exposed countries”. The beef farmers in Ireland have to be protected against any additional economic risk factors. The risk is real and significant and ASF has to be kept out of Ireland, where in 2018 the beef industry delivered in the region of €2.8 billion to the Irish exchequer. Back in early June, Poland’s chief veterinary officer announced that there had been an outbreak of ASF in a farm with some 8,000 pigs. At the time, it was confirmed that four outbreaks of ASF had been found in Poland in 2019 up to that point. According to figures from the Central Statistic Office (CSO), from January to September 2019, a total of 777t of fresh/chilled and frozen beef – to the value of €3 million – was imported from Poland to Ireland. €1.8 Million Funding Allocated To Rural Recreation Infrastructure Over €1.8 million in funding has been allocated to 109 projects of the 2019 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. The scheme is part of the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 Rural Regeneration and Development programme and provides funding for the development and maintenance of outdoor amenities such as trails, walkways, cycleways and blueways. The funding awarded on Friday aims to support small-scale local projects with funding of up to €20,000 for investment in outdoor recreation facilities and the promotion of existing recreation infrastructure. These projects are important for the wellbeing and quality of life of local residents. One in four of us included walking or hiking as part of our domestic holidays last year. Since 2016, I have provided over €43 million in funding to support the outdoor recreation sector.
the environmental and economic performance of our suckler herds. Payments under the Beef Data and Genomics Programme and the Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) will also commence in the coming weeks representing a total of €120 million in support for the beef sector in 2019. Kerry Launches 2-Year Fixed Milk Price Scheme Kerry Group has launched a two-year fixed milk price scheme for its suppliers, which will run from March to October of 2020 and 2021. It has been confirmed that the voluntary scheme will offer 31.9c/L including VAT for constituents of 3.3% protein and 3.6% butterfat. The scheme was opened last week, with suppliers being notified at the time and is understands that the scheme will relate to 20% of farmers’ milk supplies. Creed Confirms Start Of Bps Balancing Payments Just in time for Christmas, the Department of Agriculture has confirmed that balancing payments under the 2019 Basic Payments Scheme (BPS) and the Greening Scheme have now commenced. These payments now brings the total paid under the 2019 scheme to date to €1.4 billion, paid out to some 120,000 individuals. In mid-October, the Department paid out the 70% (advance payments) to all BPS to farmers across the country. This year saw 94% of eligible farmers receiving an advance payment in the first pay run. Regular pay runs have been in place since October, and this 30% balancing payments are now winging their way to qualifying farmers. Payments under the 2019 National Reserve and Young Farmers Scheme will also commence at this time to coincide with the BPS balancing payments. Runs of payments are set to continue as individual cases are cleared for payment. Farmers who have outstanding queries from the department are urged to respond to these as soon as possible in order to facilitate payment. Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that balancing payments under the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) scheme will begin next week.
Getting To Grips With Lice And Mange Mites This Housing Period Now that cattle are housed across the country, winter is the most common time to see infestations with external parasites such as lice and mange mites. In recent weeks, some beef farmers may have noticed their cattle starting to scratch off feed barriers and gates; this is caused by an external parasite infestation.
IFA Presidential Runners Receive Lists With Voter Contact Details Data Protection may be an issue here as news breaks that candidates running in the ongoing Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) elections have each received a list containing names and contact numbers for IFA members that are due to vote at branch AGMs tonight and tomorrow night (December 2 and 3). It is understood that the list was distributed to the three presidential candidates: John Coughlan; Tim Cullinan; and Angus Woods; and the two deputy presidential candidates: Thomas Cooney; and Brian Rushe over the weekend.
There are two forms of lice – biting and sucking. As a result, cattle will become itchy and begin licking themselves and use their tails to scratch. In some cases, animals can lose their coats and their skin can become inflamed. If the infestation worsens, growth rates can be affected. Symptoms include; Scratching; Licking; Tail swinging; Hair loss and Inflamed skin. Therefore, treatment is essential to reduce the risk of disease and optimise animal performance, as a heavy lice burden can affect thrive in housed cattle – resulting in a reduced weight gain.
IFA sources have indicated that the list contains contact details for members in approximately 200 branches with memberships ranging in size from below 20 to over 200. It is understood that low voter turnout may have played a contributing role in the returning officer’s decision to distribute the list. This publication understands that the lists were delivered without request to all candidates over the weekend. The practice is not common for IFA elections and comes at a stage when an estimated 30% of votes have already been cast.
In order to control external parasites on your cattle, farmers need to focus on the housing and the management of their cattle; so stocking rate can be very important. There are treatments available for external parasites in cattle – pour-ons and injectable products. As a general rule, a pour-on product is best for lice control, but – regardless of the treatment used – it is important to follow the instructions so that the correct dose is given and given correctly.
Each IFA member has an equal vote. The quorum for an official vote to take place at a club meeting is eight club members. Voting in the election will draw to a close on Friday, December 13, and it is hoped the new IFA president will be announced on Tuesday, December 17. With approximately 70,000 members eligible to vote, it remains to be seen what the final voter turnout percentage will be. However, the question must be asked, just because you sign up for the organisation, does that give an organisation the right to pass your contact details forward to others. The three candidates and campaigning for personal gain and not for the benefit of the IFA. Is it not time that the hierarchy within the organisation re-assess their actions and policies, with regard to Data Protection?
All in-contact animals should be treated at the same time during housing and monitoring the situation throughout the winter is recommended. For lice control, it is generally best to clip the backs of cattle if using a pouron product. In addition, mange mites can be controlled in the same way, but some injectable products can also be used to control these parasites. Injectable and pour-on products can be used for mange mites and sucking lice, but only pour-on products are effective against biting lice. Further Payments To Beep Applicants Announced Further payments to applicants under the 2019 Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) scheme have been announced by the DAFM. These include payments to BEEP Farmers who have completed the weighing and submission of data in respect of their eligible animals. Beginning this week, payments to the value of €13,239,560 are issuing to 13,290 farmers, giving a total of €15,306,280 being paid to 16,424 farmers participating in the pilot. The data provided by this scheme and these measurements will help to improve 8 West Kerry Live
N & P Statements To 31 October 2019 Now Available The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to October 2019 are now available from the Department of Agriculture’s online system. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. Farmers are also reminded that completed Nitrates Record forms for the movement of organic fertiliser, temporary movement of animals during the year or
short-term rental grazing agreements (Records 3, 4, 5 Forms) for 2019 should be submitted before 31st December 2019 to: nitrates@agriculture. gov.ie, OR by post to: Nitrates Section, Dept. of Agriculture, Food & Marine, Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford Y35 PN52 Beef Taskforce Meeting Takes Place In Agriculture House The inaugural meeting of the Beef Taskforce took place on Tuesday, 3 December 2019 in Agriculture House. The purpose of the establishment of the Taskforce is to try enforce the agreement agreed between the Farming Organisations and Meat Industry Ireland, and was set up on foot of the agreement reached on 15th September. It is essential that farmers are united within this structure, and that they co-operate in a fair and democratic manner. Farmers must have faith in their elected representatives, and not let outside influences, individuals or political groups influence these negotiations. These are important talks. The meat industry is tough, and everyone must be at the top of their game. And to those who wish to make personal or political gain, please stay away, and don’t bring harm to a troubled beef sector, for personal gain.

Kitchen Warfare for Kung-Flu Fighting! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Ginger Has long been used in traditional medicine to treat colds and flu, and modern studies show that it has measurable antiviral benefits. In one study, fresh ginger protected against HRSV (human respiratory syncytial virus, a major cause of lower respiratory tract infections), by blocking the virus’ ability to attach to cells and stimulating the release of compounds that help counteract viral infections. Try these: Cut peeled ginger root into matchsticks, sauté in olive oil until cooked, and use as a topping for soups or salads. Simmer ginger slices in milk or coconut milk, strain, then whisk in turmeric and honey for a creamy, soothing beverage. Combine finely grated ginger, dates, walnuts, and tahini in a food processor, process to make a paste, then roll into balls for quick energy treats. Apple Cider Vinegar
In recent years, there has been a lot of talk of the overuse of antibiotics and unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics in the absence of a bacterial infection. We are more aware now that antibiotics do not kill a virus and doctors are reluctant to prescribe antibiotics to treat viral infections, unless there is a secondary bacterial infection or the patient’s underlying health warrants antibiotic therapy. General treatment advice for common viral infections include resting, stay hydrated, keep warm and take paracetamol for fevers, aches and pain associated with a viral infection. That’s all sound advice, but perhaps there is something in the kitchen that can offer added protection from a viral attack or at least curb its severity if it takes hold. The good news is that there is, and you might be surprised that many of these foods are about as common as the common cold! Black Tea Tea leaves contain naturally occurring compounds—including polyphenols, catechins, and alkaloids such as caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline— that defend the plants against invading bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Research shows that black tea can inhibit the infectivity of influenza virus. And in one study, black tea extract rich in flavanol compounds called theaflavins inhibited herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) infection. Try these: Whizz in a blender strong-brewed black tea with grated ginger, mango, and natural yogurt for a flu-busting breakfast. Steep black tea bags in hot water, then use as a broth to cook brown rice, garlic, and onions. Garlic Its powerful compound including allicin fight viruses, including influenza, rhinovirus, herpes simplex, HIV, viral pneumonia, and rotavirus. In one study, people who took allicin extract over a 12-week period had significantly fewer colds than a placebo group, and those who did get a cold recovered faster. Try these: Roast whole heads of garlic, skin-on, until cloves are soft, then let cool and peel off skins. Eat as is, add to mashed potato or infuse a broth with it. Finely mince raw garlic and add to a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, and chopped thyme. Mash raw garlic cloves and mix with minced rosemary and coconut oil, then refrigerate until firm for a pungent dairy-free spread.
A favourite traditional medicine, yet a number of modern studies have established the antimicrobial activity of apple cider vinegar against a variety of pathogens. Researchers suggest that apple cider vinegar may work by a variety of mechanisms, including the antiviral properties of apples and the presence of probiotics that occur during the fermentation process. Try these: Steep dried elderberries and sliced ginger for a few days in apple cider vinegar, then strain and add honey for an easy oxymel (herbal tonic), take 10ml three times daily. Whisk together apple cider vinegar, honey, mustard, and olive oil for a sweet, creamy dressing to use daily. Stir apple cider vinegar and honey into hot water and pour over sliced onions and ginger for quick pickles to add to salads and stir-fries. Cinnamon Has been used in herbal medicine for generations, and chemical profiling shows that its active compounds have antiviral, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects. In one study, cinnamaldehyde, the compound that gives cinnamon its characteristic flavour and smell, inhibited the growth of the influenza virus. Cinnamaldehyde also inhibits Listeria and Escherichia coli in foods, and protects against a variety of yeasts and fungi, including Candida albicans. Try these: Add cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla extract, and coconut milk to oatmeal for a chai-spiced breakfast. Toss sliced apples and pears with cinnamon and honey, sauté in coconut oil, and top with toasted pecans. Add cinnamon and cocoa powder to your morning coffee. Shiitake Mushrooms Loaded with beta-glucans, antiviral compounds that have been shown to inhibit viral replication and enhance immune function. In one study, people who ate shiitake mushrooms for four weeks showed improved markers of immunity, as well as reduced inflammation. Other studies have shown that shiitake mushrooms have significant antibacterial and antifungal properties. Try these: Usually sold as dried shiitake, rehydrate by placing a handful in a mug of boiled water. Allow to steep for 15 minutes. Drain but keep the soak water for stock or hot drink. Thinly slice shiitake mushroom, toss with melted coconut oil and minced garlic, and roast in oven until cooked. Sauté whole shiitake mushroom and leeks in olive oil, then finish with balsamic glaze. Stir-fry shiitakes, slivered carrots, broccoli, sliced red peppers, and minced ginger in sesame oil and tamari, then toss with cooked soba or rice noodles. 12 West Kerry Live

Surely something could be done to prevent a reoccurrence of those awful wrecks – such destruction of life and property.
Boat-building in Dingle
Message in a bottle
From – Waterford Mail, 20 May 1826
From – Cork constitution, 1 January 1856
The Commissioners of Irish Fisheries are preparing to build a number of hookers and fishing boats, at Dingle, in the county of Kerry.
On Sunday the 23rd of December James Sullivan, a young man living at Kinnard [sic], picked up a bottle on Kinnard strand in which a paper was enclosed. The following words were written on the paper - “Latitude 27; Longitude 18. The ship Prince of Quebec is just sinking in said longitude, on the 26th of November, 1853”. [The message was unsigned. The co-ordinates show that the vessel was near the Cape Verde Islands, off the west coast of Africa at the time of the sinking].
Driven ashore in Dingle From – Tralee Chronicle, 31 December 1858 On Christmas Eve, while it was blowing a very violent gale, the Aber of Marseilles, laden with Indian corn from Galatz [present day Romania] was driven ashore here, immediately below Mr. Thomas Manning’s farmhouse. A few days previously she drifted from her moorings to the shore convenient to “Lewis’s Gate”, but was presently got off without sustaining the slightest injury. She was three months and 40 days [?] at sea and encountered during the time some very severe weather, having suffered the loss of some of her rigging.
Castlegregory prosecutions From – Tralee Chronicle, 23 January 1857 At the Castlegregory Petty Sessions last week three persons named Cournane, Deen and McCarthy were prosecuted by Mr. Connelly for having secreted wrecked goods.
Death of ship’s captain From – Saunders’s News-Letter, 13 February 1808 Thomas Robertson Esq Sovereign of Dingle, County Kerry, as Coroner, held an inquest on the body of David Munroe, Master of the brig Countess of Darlington, of North Shields, bound for Chatham and now in the harbour of Dingle. Captain Munroe died suddenly on Thursday night. Verdict, died of an apoplectic fit.
Loss of the Liverpool at Inch – ( 2 reports) First report - Kerry Evening Post, 10 December 1836 During the tremendous storm on the night of Wednesday last, the brig Liverpool, of Liverpool, Thomas Louden, master, bound from Miramichi, New Brunswick to Liverpool with a cargo of timber, was driven on the bar of Inch in Dingle bay, at the hour of12 at night. She immediately became a total wreck in the raging surf. On the vessel first striking, the captain and Mrs Louden were washed overboard. Mrs. Louden was never seen again. The captain gained the shore by laying hold of a rope but died shortly after of grief, cold and fatigue. The remainder of the crew of 13 were saved.
On the morning after the wreck Captain Eagar of Minard, resident Magistrate, hastened to the aid and relief of the sufferers, accompanied by a party of coastguards and police. However, before they arrived, plunder to a considerable extent had taken place. Extract from the second report – Saunders’s News-Letter, 23 December 1836 The crew clung to their shattered vessel until daybreak, every wave washing over them. When morning broke the crew could see that going on shore would not be difficult. They eagerly looked for the help, which, as sufferers, they had a right to expect from the inhabitants on the shore. Here, were it possible, we wish to draw a veil over the scenes which followed. No sooner did the wreck become visible, than the natives of the neighbouring villages, more like savages than inhabitants of a Christian country – crowded to the wreck as a lawful booty. Far from helping their suffering fellow creatures to the shore they turned their full attention to plundering them of everything they possessed. They broke open their boxes, possessing themselves of their clothing, without shame or scruple, before the owner’s faces. The unfortunate captain, while lying expiring on the beach, was robbed of his watch and some sovereigns in his pocket. It is but justice to Mr. O’Carroll, the parish priest, to say that he has been calling upon his flock to make restitution of the plundered property.
Cournane was fined £10 and the other two £5 each. There are summonses against nine other persons for similar offences which will be tried next court day.
Neglected coast of Kerry From – Southern Reporter and Cork Commercial Courier, 1 February 1861 The fearful shipwreck which occurred last week in Dingle Bay will probably at last rouse the public of this county to the neglected condition of our coast. Between Valentia and the Samphires, embracing a portion of the coast the boldest and most dangerous in Ireland, there is not a single light or a single lifeboat to render any assistance to save life. The devoted ship hurled by the tempest, may be driven in the darkness of night against the stupendous cliffs of the Blasquets, or Sybil Head which rise like a wall 800 feet [244m] above the deep ocean at its base, or the Brandon coast with its jagged precipices without a beacon light to warn it of the dangerous shore. The Castlemaine Bar [Inch] is notorious for the number and frequency of wrecks on it. West Kerry Live 15

Tá An Nollaig ag druidim linn i ndáiríre anois and in Dingle Library we have a broad range of festive books and items for both young and old alike to keep you entertained throughout the month to the turn of the year and beyond.
To help get children in the mood we will be 2 Christmas Art & Colouring sessions in the library on Saturday 14 & 21 December at 11.00 -12.00 o’clock. So please bring all your budding artists, graphic designers and interior decorators along to join in some Creative Christmas craic. It can be easy at times to overlook the two special collections that make this library that little bit different from most other small library branches. So as a reminder we’ve included two random examples of what you can find in both The Ó Fiannachta Collection and An Cnósach Duibhneach. The first from Annála Ríoghachta Éireann/The Annlas of The Four Masters:

Great to hear that the popular Dingle Walking Festival will be revived next year with the weekend of May 15th to 17th chosen as weatherwise a more suitable time of year than the original February fixture. Colm Bambury the founder of the Walking Festival has handed over the organising to the Dingle Walking Club and this enthusiastic group will no doubt continue to grow the event in the years ahead. AWARDS. Congratulations to the Dingle Camphill Community who are the most recent recipients of the Community Vibrancy Recognition Award jointly sponsored by Kerry Group and NEWKD. Their Dún Síon based enterprise is a wonderful facility offering residential and non residential care with both indoor and outdoor activities catering for people needing supervised help and direction. FESTIVALS. Dingles newest weekend event the Literary Festival got off to a great start in mid October and offered an interesting range of workshops and seminars catering for experienced and non experienced book, music and poetry lovers. Tús maith leath na hoibre!!. OTHER VOICES. Congratulations to Philip King and his crew on another wonderful Other Voices Weekend which saw hundreds of music lovers descend on the Peninsula. At the time of compiling these notes it is noticable that quite a large crowd are still extending their stay such is the entertainment value in the Other Voices Programme. With such National 16 West Kerry Live
and International T.V. coverage to follow this Festival is certainly one of the Peninsulas best advertising promotions and well worthy of whatever local support is required to ensure its future here in its natural home. Those of us who try and maintain the graveyard during the year are acutely aware of the huge interest by tourists in the St James Church all because of the Other Voices connection. WOODLAND PROJECT. An Diseart is the venue on Tuesday December 10th to launch the Community Woodland for Corca Dhuibhne Project . The evening starts at 7p.m.with a short film titled Call of the Forest followed by a discussion and is hosted by Daoine Dúlra in association with Transition Corca Dhuibhne. Saor cead isteach. CONCERTS. Several interesting concerts are planned for the next few weeks throughout the Peninsula. Tickets are still available for the Dingle New Music Choir and Orchestra Annual Concert in St Mary's Church on Friday December 20th starting at 7.30p.m. Tickets from Choir members. Another event sure to sell out quickly is the Concert on Sunday December 29th also in St Mary's to raise funds for the renovations to St
James' Church. Tickets to this event available from Eventbrite.ie CHRISTMAS CHALLENGES. The Business Chamber this week issued two personal challenges to the people of the Dingle Peninsula which aim to help local jobs and help people in need of companionship. The first challenge is to make every effort to shop local and at least consider spending some of this years gifts money on locally produced goods or services in local outlets. That of course includes the nearest shop or outlet to your home which will also reduce the carbon footprint now on everybodys lips with the recent climate change initiatives. And you will also help keep people in employment in the Peninsula. The second challenge is to look around and visit or offer help to people in your area in need of companionship or advice or guidance. People living alone or suffering from depression or anxiety from events in their lives often suffer from unnecessary loneliness and very often do not reach out for help until it is too late. Yes we can all be better citizens by just being a little more aware of what is happening around our locality and doing something small to assist others in their time of need. SLAN TAMALL!!!

Nuacht ón gCoiste Timpeallachta PCD Michael Holden agus Cillian O Riain Sa Phobalscoil, tá an-chuid rudaí á dhéanamh againn chun ár dtionchar ar an timpeallacht a laghdú. Níl buidéil uisce phlaisteacha ar díol sa cheaintín a thuilleadh. Anois tá buidéil in-athúsáidte agus cannaí uisce ar fáil. Is rud mór é seo in éineacht leis na stáisiúin uisce atá timpeall na scoile. Tar éis an méid sin a dhéanamh, tá i bhfad níos lú buidéil phlaisteacha le feiscint sna boscaí bruscair. Tá an scoil bainteach leis na féilte agus na himeachtaí timpeall Chorca Dhuibhne ar nós an Fhéile Bia. Le dhá bhliain anuas chabhraigh scoláirí ag na stáisiúin bruscair agus uisce timpeall an bhaile. An fheidhm atá leis na stáisiúin seo ná cabhrú le daoine an bruscar a chur sna háiteanna cearta (bia sna málaí bia agus rudaí le hathchúrsáil sna málaí cearta agus mar sin de). Ag na stáisiúin uisce, bíonn seans ag daoine na plátaí in-athúsáidte a ní agus uisce a chur sna buidéil in-athúsáidte.
BUÍOCHAS THANK YOU Táimíd buíoch le rá go d’eirigh go hiontach leis an chéad Féile Liteartha Chorca Dhuibhne. Ba mhaith linn ár buiochas ó chroí a ghabháil libh as bhur cabhair, am agus tacaíocht. Chomh maith leis na rudaí sin, tá ár gcóras féin bruscair againn laistigh den scoil. Tá boscaí bruscair difriúla againn i gcomhair na saghsanna bruscair difriúla - cosúil leis an bhFéile Bia! Táimid anois ag cur bosca eile leo; bosca do na paicéidí criospaí agus grán rósta. Ba cheart do seo laghdú a dhéanamh ar an méid dramhaíola a théann sna boscaí míchearta. Tá dhá bhrat ghlas faighte ag an scoil: rud a thaispeánann an méid atá á dhéanamh againn chun cabhrú leis an dtimpeallacht. Bhíomar bainteach le Mol Teic Daingean Uí Chúis freisin, ag cabhrú leis an scéim malartú bolgán a bhí ar siúl acu. Chomh maith le sin bhí ceardlann againn le déanaí faoi athrú aeráide agus conas gur féidir linn ár nósanna a fheabhsú. Tá sé soiléir ón méid seo go bhfuil an-suim ag daltaí na Pobailscoile i gcursaí timpeallachta.

Milltown Castlemaine GAA News Mid Kerry Champions: Report by Dara O' Connor Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Final: Milltown/Castlemaine 2-11 Laune Rangers 0-16. For the first time in the Mid Kerry Championship history, all roads led to Glenbeigh on Sunday afternoon last as local rivals Milltown/Castlemaine and Laune Rangers met for the first time in a decider since 2012. The field and facilities were in immaculate condition and for the 1st of December you would be hard pressed to get a better location for a game in the District. It was a hugely exciting game which produced 29 scores overall. Laune Rangers laid down a marker from the start and took an early advantage when Fiachra Clifford who was the Rangers main marksmen knocked over a free. Cathal Moriarty replied to leave matters tied at 0-1 to 0-1 after 5 minutes. Clifford (0-2) and the ever impressive Patrick Carey sent Laune Rangers into a hugely commanding 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 15 minutes. The game turned hugely after the midway point of the opening half as Cathal Moriarty was both fouled firstly, then buried the resulting penalty after superb setup play involving Dylan O'Neill. Man of the Match Jonathan O'Sullivan and Donal Dennehy had Milltown/Castlemaine in the ascendancy at 1-3 to 0-4 by the 20th minute after a sharp scoring burst.
Milltown/Castlemaine are proud to present “Taking the Mic” fundraiser on Easter Sunday Night, April 12th 2020, in Ballygarry House Hotel. It is the first event of its kind for our club and it’s sure to be a roaring success. “Taking The Mic” is a fundraiser based around lip syncing to a song whilst performing on stage. We have enlisted the talents of Cassie Leen, renowned dance choreographer to help our acts along and ensure everyone reaches their potential .. With places filling up fast for acts to take part, we are looking for friends/ businesses/ family/ work colleagues in the locality who want to take the stage and let loose and have some craic for the biggest night for the club in 2020. With celebrity judges, spot prizes and special guests on the night, a night you won’t want to miss. All proceeds for this fundraiser will go towards the field development. Please contact Adele 086-0721847 or Colin 087-2612392

John Tyther for Laune Rangers landed a huge point to narrow the gap to the minimum but Jonathan O'Sullivan did a very good follow up act to keep Milltown/Castlemaine leading 1-4 to 0-5 after 25 minutes. Shane Doona had the deficit reduced to the bare minimum moving towards the end of the half but a superb Cathal Moriarty goal made the difference going into the short whistle when a rasper off his left leg bounced down off the crossbar and comfortably fell into the net to make it 2-4 to 0-5.
HOMEOPATH Ventry
Laune Rangers, as expected never gave in and had matters back to a solitary score at 2-4 to 0-9 approaching injury time in the first half as Fiachra Clifford, Kieran Doona and Darragh O'Sullivan reduced the arrears.
Tel: 086-229 6809
Both sides exchanged scores late on in the half as Pa Wren through a fantasic long range effort, Fiachra Clifford (Free), Dylan O'Neill (M/C) and Jason Browne from a '45' for Laune Rangers seen Milltown/Castlemaine carry a slender 2-6 to 0-11 lead into the interval. Fiachra Clifford pointed twice early in the second period (1 Free, 1 from play) to give Laune Rangers the lead at 2-6 to 0-13. Jonathan O'Sullivan, Cathal Moriarty & Kieran O'Carroll off his left leg put Milltown/Castlemaine back in control. Laune Rangers were, shortly after reduced to 14 men when Shane McSweeney who has always been a great servant for the Killorglin club was given his marching orders by Paul Hayes. Jonathan O'Sullivan (Free) and a huge score from David Roche made it a two score game heading down the final straight as Milltown/Castlemaine led 2-11 to 0-13. To be fair to Laune Rangers they never gave in, fought to the bitter end as one would expect and brought it back to the minimum by the games finish as points from Patrick Carey, Roan Moriarty & Fiachra Clifford had matters at 2-11 to 0-16 deep into injury time. David Roche made a big mark midfield however which would halt the Laune men's late surge and following a wide Paul Hayes blew a halt to proceedings. Scorers: Cathal Moriarty (2-2), Jonathan O'Sullivan (0-4), Donal Dennehy (01), David Roche (0-1), Kieran O'Carroll (0-1), Pa Wren (0-1), Dylan O'Neill (0-1) Well done to all our players and management on a brilliant win. Supporters : A huge thank you to all the supporters who travelled to Glenbeigh on Sunday last to support the senior management team of Paul Fitzmaurice, Jeremiah Hayes and Liam Kelliher and the senior panel, in their final game of the season. We also commend all the households, schools and businesses that proudly displayed the club colours in the lead up to the game.

Beaufort Book Launch Kerry Dreamtime: Lore and Legend of the Magillicuddy Reeks by Thomas ‘Totty’ O’Sullivan Launch at Beaufort Bar, Beaufort, On Thursday, December 12th, @ 8 p.m. Special Guest on the night: Áine Moriarty, CEO of Irish, Film, Television, Academy Kerry Dreamtime is the culmination of five years work collecting the legends and the lore of Magillicuddy Reeks. This publication has its conception, initially in the setting up of Beaufort Historical Archive in cooperation with Beaufort Community Council and CE Scheme in 2014. "Kerry Dreamtime" is an expression of the cultural content of the ‘spine of Kerry’, that is the Magillicuddy Reeks; the songs, poems, stories, history, previously unpublished material and including unique Beaufort age-old traditions including Biddys, the Kalem Films, 1910, etc. ‘Kerry Dreamtime’ is a cultural layer, a sense of place complimenting the physical pristine landscape of the Reeks from dawn of the Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. The title ‘Kerry Dreamtime’ is inspired by the Aboriginal Songlines/ Dreamtime tradition, morphing, in this case, into the Kerry experience: the Aisling/Dreamtime of the Spéirbhean Poets of Sliabh Luachra. The book is a cultural companion as you trek along the Reeks, furthering your experience of the stories that shape the physical landscape and the intangible aspects of this stunning part of Iveragh, in Kerry.

Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

GoFundMe Page Set Up For Kingdom Gaels Great
looked after in London by the late great Christy Kissane (Killorglin) and Tom Roche (Listowel). He has fond memories playing with Brendan Stack, Tom Finnerty, Sean Spillane, 'big' Tom McDonald, Karl Scanlon, Kevin Waldron and Mick Galvin - whom he recalls as “serious footballers”. Seamus played with the London senior football team for a number of years and also played with the London Junior and U21 teams. He even played London Senior, Junior and U21 in the one year! Not to mention his part in 2 AllIreland Junior finals versus Cork and his home county, Kerry.
A group of former team mates have begun a fundraising drive to help, Seamus O’Brien, who played with the Kingdom Kerry Gaels from 1991 - 2000. Seamus suffered a life changing accident on February 27th 2018. After multiple operations Seamus unfortunately had his leg amputated above the knee on Tuesday November 5th, 2019. Seamus went to London in January 1991 and played with The Kingdom GAA club until they joined forces with Kerry Gaels. Seamus played for the Kingdom Kerry Gaels (KKG) until 2000 and played in the team which were beaten in the 2000 London Senior championship final. In the final year, he played for the team whilst living in Ireland. He won Conway Cups and Tipperary Cups while in London but was unlucky not to claim a Senior championship medal. Like most KKG players, Seamus was met and
Before moving to London Seamus played all his football until 1989 with his home club Firies. He then spent 2 years in Chicago where he played with the local club St. Brendan's with whom he won a North American championship. He also played in the New York Junior Championship with the Westmeath club. While in both London and America Seamus worked in construction - in America with Shannon construction and in London with TC Costelloe, Byrne Brothers and PC Harrington. Seamus moved back to Ireland in March 2000 with his then girlfriend and now his wife, Ruth Flanagan. They setup home in Navan, Co. Meath where Seamus worked in construction in Dublin whilst also playing football with Seneschalstown in Navan. He was still playing football up to recently and was part of the KKG Over 35s team that took part in the annual Tommy Griffin tournament
in Dingle in September 2016 and 2017. He has passed on his love for the GAA to his kids who are currently playing underage with Milltown/Listry and Seamus is helping train the Keel/Listry U14s. Seamus and Ruth have 4 kids, Ciaran, Oisin, Cara and Aideen. The family moved to Firies in 2008 when the recession hit. Seamus continued working in construction as a sub contractor/self employed and has been self-employed since up to the time of his accident. The accident happened on February 27th, 2018 and Seamus hasn't been able to work since. Ruth has been a nurse carer for 6 to 9 months however this has been their only source of income since Seamus had his accident and with 4 kids the last 18 months have taken a severe toll on their savings and finances. Seamus' recovery is going to be a long expensive process. He is now waiting for a prosthetic leg to be fitted. He will be fitted for 3 prosthetic legs within the next 2 years with the costs of that alone exceeding €200k. And this is before physiotherapy, occupational therapy, adjustments to be made to the house and any additional costs. You can donate through the GoFundMe page which the group have set up: gofundme.com and search for Seamus O'Brien Support Fund

Match Report: Ballyheigue Athletic 0 - 4 Castlegregory Celtic FC.
After negotiations with Arsenal broke down, Conor Boden was back on the touchline to oversee another fairly comfortable win for Castlegregory Celtic FC. Ballyheigue passed it around nicely at times but couldn't find a way through Alan Macnamara, Damien 'Still Got It' Finn, and Michael Scanlon (who brought the average age of the midfield down to slightly younger than the Titanic). Shane Kenny was missing on the night as he had to catch a flight; doubtless trying to retrieve a few Castle Celtic footballs which he cleared into the upper atmosphere on Sunday. In his place Alan Fitzgerald and Dylan Hoare were quickest to almost every ball, giving Ballyheigue few opportunities to fashion a chance, and Eoin Kennedy was left without a save of note to make. The home team also got little joy down the wings where Alain Beaujouan and Maurice James Fitzgerald repeated their excellent performances from the weekend in both defence and attack. If Victor Frankenstein was enlisted to patch various bits of Castlegregory Celtic FC players together, serious consideration would have to go to the inclusion of Jason Griffin's foot and Alan Fitzgerald's noggin, the combination of which yielded a goal in either half.

Cost Saving Energy Tipsat at home Your Money Matters Christmas!
Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise? A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time.
Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes With Christmas rapidly approaching we all seem to be up in a bit of a and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the panic toForspend, spend! Their second piece of advice is to agree a family spending limit. We all know the feeling of buying expensive presents for loved ones that are not appreciated or even wanted in some cases. If you can agree an upper limit on spending beforehand amongst family members you’ll find yourself becoming more creative with your ideas. Let simple common sense prevail. Try and avoid leaving your shopping until the last minute as decision fatigue will take over from good sense. These are the times you are likely to buy impulsively and to spend too much on unwanted gifts. You should also shop around to try to find the best value for money. Our final piece of advice would be to shop local where possible. We are privileged here in Dingle with such fantastic local produce, crafts and shops available on our doorstep and buying locally means we are not only supporting and keeping money in our local community but by buying local produce we will also be reducing our carbon footprint. Ar deireadh, ná dearúd spiorad na Nollag agus seachas a bheith ag caitheamh do chuid airgid ar fad, caith roinnt ama i measc do chairde agus do chomharsain agus do ghaolta. Cars: Now That's A Fact!
13. In Russia, it’s illegal to drive around in a dirty car.
1. There are currently more than a BILLION cars being used around the world.
15. 35% of the world’s population drives on the left side of the road.
2. Nearly 70 million cars are manufactured every year. 3. In 1886, German inventor Karl Benz (as in the co-founder of Mercedes-Benz) built the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is widely considered to be the world’s first production car. 4. The first speeding ticket was issued in 1896. The speed? A whopping 8 MPH. 5. Modern cruise control was invented by Ralph Teetor in 1948. Teetor, who was blind, got the idea from his lawyer, who was apparently a terrible driver. 6. The company which makes the most car tyres in the world is ... Lego!! 7. In 1908, the Ford Model T became the first mass-produced car. By 1925, it cost as little as $250. 8. The average car has 30,000 parts. 9. That new car smell you can’t get enough of? It’s actually composed of around 50 volatile organic compounds, though manufacturers have been working to eliminate the smell completely. 10. The average American commuter spends 42 hours a year stuck in traffic. 11. The most frequently stolen car in the United States is the Honda Accord. 12. With a top-speed of 277.8 MPH, the Koenigsegg Agera RS is currently the fastest production car in the world. With faster cars being churned out virtually every month, who knows how long it’ll hold onto this record. 38 West Kerry Live
14. 16% of car owners admit to never washing their cars. 16. The average Bugatti Veyron owner apparently owns 84 Cars, three private jets, and a yacht. Unbelievable. 17. The top speed at the first automobile race in the United States was 15 MPH. 18. Volvo is Latin for “I roll.” 19. BMW in South Africa offers a flamethrower option, called the Blaster, to prevent car-jackings. 20. The average car spends 95% of its time parked. 21. Toyota is the largest car manufacturer in the world, producing a little over 13,000 cars a day. 22. Ferrari, on the other hand, churns out just 14 cars a day. 23. Each year, around 280 million car tyres are discarded. 24. In 2015, Volkswagen sold more of its currywurst sausages than cars. 25. The world's first traffic fatality was Irish scientist Mary Ward who died in 1869, in Birr, Co Offaly when she fell out of her cousin's steam-powered car and under its wheel.

Tips For Winter Driving Taking a number of simple precautions can ensure safety on Irish roads during winter. There are a number of simple precautions the RSA advises for driving over the winter months: Check your tyres...they are your only contact with the road. Tyres should be at least the minimum legal thread depth of 1.6mm but need to be changed before they get this worn. Tyres need to be to the correct tyre pressure to give the motorist the best chance in extreme conditions. Use your lights. As we come into the winter months, motorists are advised to use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. Headlights and taillights should be in working order. Understand your brakes. Check your car manual and find out if your vehicle has safety assist technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Learn how these technologies can assist your driving in harsh weather conditions. Safe Distance. It takes longer to stop a car during the winter weather so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. Make sure you can clearly see. All too often motorists do not de-fog or de-ice windows and mirrors which can compromise visibility. This winter ensure windows and mirrors are

clear, and carry a de-icer and screen scraper. Do not use boiling water as this can crack the windscreen. Beware of “Black Ice”. Black Ice is one of winter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult to see. Watch out for sheltered/ shaded areas on roads, under trees and near high walls. In the event of a breakdown. Drivers need to ensure their vehicle is well in off the road so as not to obstruct other vehicles. The driver should also put on their hazard warning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on the motorway pull in as far as you can, alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights. The driver should leave their vehicle, get behind the barrier (on the embankment) and call the Gardaí, on their mobile phone or roadside telephone. Keep up to date. Listen to local weather and traffic reports. Pay heed to the weather warnings alerting drivers of unsafe and dangerous driving conditions. Be prepared. During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car. •

Spare fuel
•
Appropriate footwear in case you need to leave your vehicle e.g. boots
•

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Comhghairdeas agus buíochas ó chroí le gach éinne a bhí páirteach le Ireland’s Edge agus Other Voices an deireadh seachtaine seo chaite. Ócáidí den scoth iad a thugann aird náisiúnta agus idirnaisiúnta don cúinne álainn seo don domhain. We were delighted to take part in Ireland’s Edge conversation to discuss locally led sustainability campaigns on the Peninsula. What a great platform to create awareness of the wonderful work being done by the Maharees Conservation Association and of the many initiatives underway at the Dingle Hub to foster employment opportunities through the Peninsula’s transition to a low carbon society. We had a magical evening here in the Dingle Hub on Friday with live performances from some of the artists involved in Other Voices ‘Cogar’ project. Performers included Méabh Ní Bheaglaoich & Matt Griffin, rapper Uppbeat and poet Maggie Breen, as well as the unveiling of a new painting by Bob Ó Cathail. We also had workshops here on Saturday 30th November - Laser & Lights Workshop with Colin Clark and A Little Taste of Animation with Sinéad Ní Chadhain from TG4. Thanks to Áine Ní Chíobháin (curator of Cogar) and Deirdre McKenna who did a fantastic job in displaying the pieces of work here and setting up the venue with the lovely Other Voices hearts and decor, to create such a beautiful ambience. The exhibition is here until Friday 13th December, pop in and have a look at work, exquisitely printed by Ponc Press. We were delighted to support this project, alongside Ealaín na Gaeltachta. Bhí tráthnóna draíochtúil againn anseo sa Dingle Hub ar an Aoine seo caite le léirithe beo ó roinnt dos na healaíontóirí a bhí bainteach leis an dtogra ‘Cogar’ mar chuid de Other Voices. Léirithe beo ó Mhéabh Ní Bheaglaoich & Matt Griffin, rapper Uppbeat agus file Maggie Breen, chomh maith le caint ó Bob Ó Cathail mar gheall ar a phictiúr nua. Bhí ceardlanna iontacha againn: Léasair & Soilsiú le Colin Clarke ó Integral Laser Display agus Blaisín Beochana le Sinéad Ní Chadhain ó Cúla 4, TG4. Míle buíochas le Áine Ní Chíobháin agus Deirdre McKenna, a dhein obair iontach chun an taispeántas agus an t-ionad a shocrú chun atmaisféar álainn a chruthú. Tá an taispeántas le feiscint anseo go Aoine 13ú Nollaig - buail isteach chun an obair iontach seo a fheiscint atá priontáilte go gleoite ag Ponc Press.

This is achieved through organising workshops, events, projects, community engagement, etc. and supported by funding and grant assistance. We work in three main areas - Digital Transformation, Environmental Sustainability and Creative Industries. Come and have a chat if you have an idea for a project/event/workshop that would be beneficial to the community and contribute to job creation. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1Gbps of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. dóibh ar a bhféiniúlacht féin. I mo thuairimse ní thugann aon rud daoine le chéile mar a thugann an spórt. Féach mar a bhí ag lucht leanúna Luimnigh nuair a bhuaigh iománaithe an chontae sin an Chraobh Iomána anuraidh don chéad uair ón mbliain 1973. Cad é d’ardú anama agus áthais a bhí le brath nuair a shéid an réiteoir a fheadóg , ní hamháin do mhuintir Luimnigh, ach do mhuintir na hÉireann uile (seachas muintir na Gaillimhe, ar ndóigh!). Ní minic a bhíonn céiliúradh mar sin ag pobal na tíre ar fad, tháinig daoine le chéile ó gach aon chúinne den domhan chun an cor cinniúnach seo i stair na hÉireann a chéiliúradh. Ní fhéadfá ach a bheith lúcháireach nuair a ardaíodh corn Liam Mhic Chárthaigh san aer, fiú amháin muintir na Gaillimhe! Bíonn ról lárnach ag cluichí an chumainn i ngach pobal in Éirinn chomh maith, agus feidhmíonn na goirt chaide agus iománaíochta mar chroílár náisiún na hÉireann. I bhfianaise líon na ngort imeartha agus clubanna atá ar an bhfód, is deacair a chreidiúint nach bhfuil an CLG ar a bhun ach ó 1884. Is iad na cluichí Gaelacha seo, chomh maith le ceol, amhráin agus teanga na tíre is bunús lenár gcultúr ársa féin. Tá an chaid is an iománaíocht go nádúrtha ag nach mór gach Éireannach ó aois óg, agus tugann sé bród dúinn mar náisiún imreoirí a fheiscint ag imirt na gcluichí Gaelacha ar an teilifís agus i stáidiam ar nós Pháirc an Chrócaigh, Páirc Uí Chaoimh, agus Páirc na nGael. Is laochra iad na himreoirí seo d’ógánaigh na tíre agus spreagtar iad chun cluichí Gaelacha a imirt go háitiúil.

Tá an Cumann Lúthchleas Gael difriúil ó eagraíochtaí eile sa tslí is gur eagraíocht amaitéireach é go hiomlán. Ní fhaigheann imreoirí íoctha as a bheith ag imirt, fiú ag an leibhéal is airde, leibheál idirchontaetha. I gcluichí eile ar nós an tsacair, faigheann imreoirí proifisiúnta íoctha as a bheith ag imirt, agus déanann siad slí bheatha as, cuid acu ag tuilleamh na milliún euro sa bliain go minic. Sa chaid agus san iománaíocht, imríonn na himreoirí go deonach agus caitheann siad oibriú i bpostanna ar nós an ghnáthdhuine. Imríonn siad spórt mar chaitheamh aimsire agus chun sos a thógaint ó chíorthuathail an tsaoil. Is é an meon deonach seo ceann de na gnéithe is tábhachtaí a bhaineann leis an gCumann Lúthchleas Gael. Tá an Cumann Lúthchleas Gael go príomha bunaithe ar fhoirne paróistí. Mar sin imríonn tú le club do pharóiste féin agus i gcás na n-imreoirí is fearr, led’ chontae féin chomh maith. Tugann sé seo éagsúlacht do chluichí an Chumainn a scarann iad ó chluichí ar nós an tsacair. Go minic bíonn imreoirí sacair nó rugbaí ag imirt do chlubanna ón taobh eile don domhan, agus ní gá go mbeadh an bród a bhíonn le brath ó bheith ag imirt dod’ chlub áitiúil féin ar son do pharóiste dhúchais féin chomh láidir céanna. Tá os cionn 2,200 club de chuid an CLG le fáil sna 32 contae ar fad in Éirinn, mar sin ní gá taisteal ró-fhada ó bhaile nó go bhfaighidh tú club caide, iománaíochta nó liathróid láimhe. Tá gort imeartha i nach mór gach paróiste sa tír, áiseanna spóirt a tógadh le hallas agus le díogras mhuintir na háite thar blianta fada, agus a léiríonn tábhacht na gcluichí Gaelacha do mhuintir na hÉireann.

Oireachtas na Gaeilge 2019 Tábhacht na gCluichí Gaelacha don Náisiún Tá an-tábhacht ag baint le cluichí an Chumainn Lúthchleas Gael do phobail ar fud na hÉireann. Is í an eagraíocht seo an eagraíocht spóirt is mó sa tír atá ag dul ó neart go neart ó bunaíodh í sa bhliain 1884. Bunaíodh an Cumann an chéad lá chun traidisiún Gaelach na tíre a chur chun cinn, ó thaobh spóirt, ceoil agus teangan de. Cruthaíonn an eagraíocht meon láidir pobail ag leibhéal áitiúil agus náisiúnta. Sa lá atá inniu ann, imrítear caid, iománaíocht agus liathróid láimhe ar fud na cruinne agus tá an eagraíocht ar cheann dos na heagraíochtaí spóirt amaitéireacha is mó agus is rathúla ar domhan. Is gné fhíorthábhachtach é an Cumann Lúthchleas Gael i dtírdhreach chultúrtha na tíre, a thugann daoine le chéile agus a thugann tuiscint 46 West Kerry Live
Is iad Craobh na hÉireann sa chaid agus san iománaíocht buaicphointí spóirt na bliana do mhórán daoine ar fud na hÉireann. Bíonn na céadta míle duine ag féachaint ar an gCraobh ar scáileáin timpeall an domhain ar fad, ag tnúth go mór le gach cic, buile agus pas. Anuas air sin, bíonn na ticéid ar fad do Pháirc an Chrócaigh díolta amach don ócáid gach bliain, le hos cionn 82,000 duine ag freastal orthu. Bíonn go leor bailte dúnta síos agus chomh ciúin leis an uaigh i rith an chluiche cheannais, gach ball do phobal na háite ar fad istigh sna tithe ag stánadh ar an teilifís. Bíonn bratacha le dathanna na gcontaetha orthu le feiscint go hard sa spéir crochta ar chlathacha agus ar thithe ag druidim le deireadh an tSamhraidh. I mo thuairimse, tá tábhacht thar na bearta ag baint le cluichí Gaelacha de chuid an Chumainn Lúthchleas Gael do chultúr na hÉireann. Múnlaíonn siad sinn mar threibh go háitiúil ar leibhéal an pharóiste, ar leibheál an chontae agus mar Éireannaigh, mar chine ar leith, sa domhan mór. Go maire siad. 1. The Green Dot is one of the most widely used recycling symbols on packaging but it does NOT indicate that the packaging material on which it is marked is either recycled or recyclable. The logo is used purely to show that the producer of the packaging has made a financial contribution towards a packaging recovery scheme. It is a mark of the producer’s environmental responsibility and contribution to recycling.

2. A new water bottle refill station is now located on the wall of the tourist office opposite the Fungi statue. It was been placed there by the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Check out refill.ie for more locations to refill your water bottle (or sign up to the app if you are a business willing to provide the service).

3. According to data collected by Ocean Conservancy from beach clean ups worldwide in the past 32 years cigarette butts and filters are the biggest man made contaminant of the worlds’ oceans. 4. WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Batteries, lighting (energy saving light bulbs too!) and electrical equipment (anything with a plug) can be recycled for free at authorised collection points (e.g. West Kerry Recycling Facility) and participating shops and hardware stores. 5. Hand washing dishes can use 50% more water than a water saving energy efficient dishwasher (however models made before 1994 use more water than current models). 6. West Kerry Recycling Centre is closed Sundays, Mondays and Bank Holidays. You can bring your Christmas tree there in January for a small fee of €3. The full list of waste accepted at the facility and its opening hours can be found on www.kerrycoco.ie.
Did you hear the one about the recycling triplets? Their names are Polly, Ethel and Ian… And finally that joke….. 15. True or False? Teabags contain plastic. 14. For every tonne of paper recycled we save a)1 tree, b) 5 trees, c)17 trees, d)50 trees 13. How much electricity does an average domestic solar P.V. system produce in Ireland? 12. What is a bokashi? a) a bin b) a fruit c)a solar panel component d)a water filtration device 8. Local businesses give back more to the community. Do they give an average of a)10% b) 50% c) 100% or d)250% more to non-profit organisations than large businesses?
8. Non-profit organisations such as schools and local charities receive an average of 250% more from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. Shop Local.
9. Which vegetable accounts for the largest quantity of avoidable fruit and vegetable food waste?
7. The 25th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP25) is the supreme decision making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Its 195 member countries meet annually for 2 weeks to tackle the challenge of climate change and supervise the implementation of agreed measures. COP25 started on Monday the 2nd December.
9.
Potatoes. Over half of all potatoes produced are wasted.
10. True. Although peatlands form only 3% of the planets land surface they store at least twice as much carbon as all the standing forests. 11. According to the All-Ireland pollinator plan there are 99 species of bee in Ireland; the managed honey bee, 21 species of bumblebee and 77 species of solitary bee. One third of all Irelands bees are threatened with extinction. 12. A; a bokashi bin is a Japanese anaerobic compost system that uses microorganisms to ferment kitchen waste including meat and dairy into a safe soil builder and nutrient rich tea for plants. 13. Solar photovoltaic panels (Solar PV) generate electricity when exposed to light (as opposed to solar thermal collectors which heat water). A home solar PV system sized around 20 square meters would generate around 2600 kWh of electricity a year which is approx. 40% of the average electricity demand of an Irish home. For perspective, a ten minute electric shower uses up to 1 kWh of electricity. 14.
11. How many species of bee are there in Ireland? 10. True or False? Peatlands (bogs and fens) uptake and store more carbon than forests. 7. What is COP25?
17 trees.
15. True. Almost all teabag manufacturers use plastic (polypropylene) to seal teabags so they are not fully biodegradable. The teabags of some brands contain as much as 30% plastic. Switching to loose tea is the easiest way to avoid this plastic.
6. What days are the West Kerry Recycling Centre closed? 5. Which uses less water, a) washing a full load of dishes by hand or b) washing a full load of dishes in the dishwasher? 4. What does WEEE stand for? 3. What is the most common type of waste that litters our oceans? Is it a) cigarettes b) food packaging c) plastic bags d) glass bottles 2. Where is the new public water bottle refill station located in Dingle? 1.This is the Green Dot symbol which is one of the most widely used recycling symbols on packaging (sometimes shown in black and white). What information does it provide about the packaging on which it is displayed? The start of the Christmas season is heralded for everyone in different ways. It might be taking part in Féile na Soilse for some, practising some rousing wren tunes for others or even perhaps it’s the first hot whiskey/ port enjoyed with friends (‘Sí an Nollaig í). However, if you went to school in Ireland anytime from the 1970s to the present it is quite possible that the distribution of Folen's Christmas annuals signal the start of the festive season for you (now printed on paper from sustainably managed forests and 100% recyclable). So as an homage to Súgradh, Spraoi, Siamsa and Sonas , this week’s small changes article is an environment and sustainability themed quiz with a good bad joke thrown in for extra measure. Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid D’éirigh le cumann sinsir caide an Daingin a 17ú craobh déag Chiarraí Thiar a bhreith leo gan mórán dua in aghaidh na Gaeltachta, 0-20 v 0-9 i bpáirc an Ághasaigh ar an nDomhnach seo caite.Thosnaigh An Daingean go láidir ach siar sa leath d’fheabhasaigh an Ghaeltacht. Bhí súil le feabhas mór sa dara leath ach siad buachaillí an Daingin a fhág gearrta é ag an nGaeltacht. Ní leathscéal é ach bhraith an An Ghaeltacht uatha cúigear don bhfoireann- a bhí gortaithe nó leonta. B’iad san Ruaraí Ó Beaglaoi, Cian Ó Murchú, Rob Ó Sé, Dara ó Sé agus PJ Mac Láimh. Nách mí-amharach mar a thárla don nGaeltacht. Bhí na Súilleabhánaigh an Flathartach na Geaneys ar fheabhas. Bhuail mí-ádh an Ghaeltacht.Bheadh ard chluiche ann dá mbeadh fóirne iomlán ag an dá fhoireann. Beidh lá eile acu. Bhí an lá geal fuar agus an gort go diail. Caithfidh go raibh mallacht éigin ar fhoireann an Gaeltachta, cúigear gortaithe! Stair ón 15ú aois Déag Bhí cúirt sheasta Chiarraí bunaithe agus théadh sí ó áit go háit sa triúchaí. Bhí sí i dTrá Lí sa bhliain 1411 agus sa Daingean sa bhliain 1485. B’é an príomh bhreitheamh nó Seanascal na saoirse, príomh oifigeach Iarla Dheasmhumhan. Bhí an chúirt seo ar an múnla céanna le cúirteanna Angla Normánacha, a bhí bunaithe ar an ‘dlí comónta ceart’ agus iúré dáréag. Is léir ná raibh tásc ná tuairisc san am ar Dhlí na mBreithiún. Bí sí curtha ar leataoibh. I gCúirt an Daingin chuir Éamon Mac Muiris, barún Chiarraí, an dlí ar na
Gearaltaigh sliocht Éamoin go raibh tailte aige sa Chlochán agus i gCill Éanna. Bhí íúré dáréag ann gur daoine céimiúla iad mar Feiritéaraigh. Treantaigh, Hóraigh, Móraigh agus Husaé. B’é an ‘Seanascal,’ ná an Corcaíoch Thomas Coppinger. Fés na blianta 1570 feictear go bhfuil breitheamh Gaelach Gearaltach i mbun cúrsaí dlí ar an leithinis agus na cúirteana lonnaithe sa Daingean. Bhí Dlí na mBreithiún tréis dlí Shasana a chur ar leataoibh ar feadh tamaillín. Is sampla é seo ina ndeirtí go raibh ‘na Angla Normánaigh níos Gaelaí na na Gaeil iad féin’. Agus táid fós. Ceist Is ait ar uairibh a chuireann an chinniúint a cosa fúithe. N’fheadar an bhfeacaís an cheist seo cheanna? Féile Naomh Caitlíona. Bhí Paróiste Fhionn Trá mar a bhíonn coitianta ar an 25ú lá do Shamhain. Téann daoine dtí an Aifreann agus is mara chéile ceiliúradh Naomh Caitlíona agus Dé Domhnaigh ach gur í Caitliona atá á comóradh. Tréis an aifrinn thug breis agus trí fichid a n-aghaidh ar láthair pobail an pharóiste mar a raibh béile breá ann do chách. Bhí cúigear sagart ann ag áireamh an tAthair Ó hIcí atá gafa naocha le tamall do bhlianta. Bhí sé ag cabhrú leis an athair Eoin Ó Cadhla SP ag Aifrintí ar an mBuailtín. Is diail é. Níl aon amhras ach go bhfuil moladh ag dul dos na heagarthóirí a dheineann a gcúram go deonach i bhFionn Trá. Tá go leor saothair ag baint le béilí a réiteacht do ghasra daoine ach níorbh aon nath acu é. Dúirt Pádraig Feirear gur go deónach an obair ar fad. Ná bhí aon duine acu riamh gan béile. Togha Tá boladh na toghchánaíochta san aer. Bhí cheithre shuíochan le lionadh an lá cheanna
ach bhí an líon daoine a chaith votai an- íseal timpeall 30 fén gcéad nó níos lú. Pé uair a bheidh olltoghachán ann beidh na daoine a sheas réidh chun bóthair. Tá sé deacair aon tuiscint a bheith agat ar chúrsaí i dtoghcháin mar seo. Beidh breis agus seasca fén gcéad ag caitheamh a vóta. Glac leis go beidh gach iarrathóir ar séirse as seo go lá an olltoghchain, sa Mheitheamh nó roimhis. CFE Bhí toghachán na Gaeltachta ag Cumann Feirmeóirí Éireann lé déanaí i dTigh Chatháin ar an mBuailtín. Bhíodar beagán níos deacra na babtha seo. Ní raibh mórán ag seasamh agus is beag aithne a bhí ar fhurmhór a bhí ar na liostaí. Ba fhear ó Chorcaigh an duine ba ghiorra dúinn agus fear ón gChabhán ba shia ó bhaile. Ba bheag aithne a bhí ortha seachas mar bhíodh. Chaith gach aon duine a vótaí mar bhí dhá thoghchán, an coiste agus uachtarán. Tá lucht na dtarracóirí a thug sráideanna naofa Áth Cliath ortha féin tréis na poiliteóirí agus lucht na monarcain feola a chur ar tinneall. Bhí praghasanna titithe go mór. Tá súil againn go mbeidh toradh dearfach ag lucht na dtarracóirí. Tá siad ag foghlaim ó fheirmeóirí na Frainnce a stopann an trácht le tarracóirí agus le innealra feirme nuair a bhíonn siad ag súil le áird ar a gcás.

Chicken, Mushroom, Bacon and Tarragon Casserole
2 shallots, peeled and sliced 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced sprig of thyme bay leaf
Season well with salt and pepper, add the remaining tarragon.
knob of butter
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
200g mushrooms, cleaned and quartered
I always feel that dishes like these are what cooking is all about. It is simple cooking with so much flavour and usually a crowd pleaser. It is perfect for any time of year and for any occasion whether it be a mid-week family dinner or a fancy dinner that you want to impress.
200ml cream
For this recipe I have used chicken thighs, it is up to you if you want to remove the skin or the bone, both are easy to do. I always leave the both intact but if you want remove them it is an easy job.
Method
To remove the skin, simply pull it straight off and for the bone use a small knife to find the bone, keep your knife on it and run it along the bone, repeat this until the bone is free. Make enough of this to last the second day and it will eve taste better the next day. Ingredients rapeseed oil chicken pieces (allow two per person)
simmer. Allow this to cook for about 20 minutes, make sure it is at a simmer but not boiling. Add the cream and cook for a further 15 minutes. The liquid should have reduced and the chicken should be tender at this stage.
300g streaky bacon, diced
Serve with some creamy mash potato. Bain taitneamh as!!!!
600ml chicken stock handful of fresh tarragon, chopped salt and pepper
Heat a casserole pot or medium sized pot over a medium to high heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Once the pot is hot, add a little oil to the pot and then add the chicken pieces. Allow them to brown, this will take at least five minutes. Once they are brown, remove the chicken and place them on a tray. Add the onions, garlic, thyme and bay leaf to the pot, keep the temperature high but keep stirring, after three minutes or so add the butter and the mushrooms. Cook this for about five minutes. They will have taken on a lovely colour if cooked over a medium to high heat. Add the bacon and cook for another 3 minutes or so. You can now add the chicken back to the pot. Add in the stock and about half of the tarragon, bring this to a

Film Review
Michael Healy-Rae TD
Knives Out
Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae
Tom Ó Neachtain Knives Out is the most recent film from writer/ director Rian Johnson. It follows the mystery surrounding a famous writer’s death, and his family’s doubts about his supposed “suicide.” One thing that the director does exceptionally well is the use of the family house as the centrepiece of the story. The score and the shooting style creates a suspenseful atmosphere where nothing you see or hear can be fully trusted. The first act is brilliant in the way that it tells the same story from different perspectives with a seamless mix of flashbacks and present-day story beats. The film is based on a colour-scheme of deep reds and dimmed yellows, and the lighting is used very well. Overall the whole look of the film, from the cinematography, set design and colours makes it a treat to look at. The ensemble cast do an excellent job. Their interactions are realistic and expertly showcase the cast’s acting range - it’s a blast to watch and it really elevates the film. One frustrating choice though is that as the film progresses, Daniel Craig’s detective gets less and less to do (apart from the final revelations). Also, the further the story leans away from the house and from the individual characters, the less interesting it gets. However, the final act is very well staged and all the twists and turns make sense in context of the story. The script is so tight and well put together that it makes throwaway lines from earlier essential to the plot of the film. That’s a credit to Rian Johnson and his writing team. It’s clear that they put a lot of thought into the story. This is probably the closest a 4-star film will get to a five stars, but a few annoying creative choices hold this one back. Still, it has enough fun and intrigue to recommend it to anyone looking for a good time at the movies.

Blaiseadh Filíochta ón Aos Óg
Anseo thíos tá dánta le roinnt daltaí sa 2ú & sa 4ú Bliain i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, ag eascairt as ceardlanna le Dairena Ní Chinnéide, Sríbhneoir Cónaitheach Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne. Tá an scéim seo á maoiniú ag Ealaín na Gaeltachta. Comhghairdeas leis na scríbhneoir óga go léir! Treise libh! Gnáthmhaidin
An Áit is Ansa Liom
Trá na Minairde
Dán
Téann mo álaram
Taitníonn a lán áiteanna liom,
Lá breá a bhí ann,
Bíonn brón millteach orm
Timpeall ar Chorca Dhuibhne.
Ceapaim gurb é trá na Minairde an áit is deise ar domhan.
Bím te teolaí sa leaba
Dathanna geala ar na Blascaodaí
Le caisleainín deas dúchasach agus clocha liatha míne ann.
Bím an-fhuar nuair a éirím
nó na bláthanna deasa lasmuigh de Courtneys.
Chun na huibhe a fháil.
Gléasaim don scoil agus
Bíonn an fharraige, cancrach 's crosta agus an gaineamh úr donn.
Is maith liom teas na farraige i gCeann Trá,
Ithim mo bhricfeasta
Nuair a bhíonn an ghrian ag scoilteadh na gcloch.
Fiú le báisteach nó teas na gréine, bíonn am deas agam ann.
Cad a bhí ann ach cearc!
Nuair a théim amach an doras Tagann gaoth fhuar chruaidh Rithim chuig an gcarr
Ag léimt anuas don gcé i mBaile na nGall, Spraoi a bheith againn gan locht. Ach, is dócha gurb í an áit is fearr liom
Stopaimid ag an mbunscoil
Ná mo bhaile féin beag,
Léimeann mo dheartháir agus mo dheirfiúir amach
Thuas staighre, ar dheis
Leanaimid ar aghaidh chuig an scoil Nuair a shroichimid an scoil Siúlaim isteach chun bualadh le mo chairde

Braitheann sé ró-luath agus féachann sé ar nós lár na hoíche,
Seo leis an mbus
Siúlaím chuig an gcistin mar bím ana-ocrach,
Le brath in san aer
Timpeall an Pharóiste.
Agus déanaim babhla weetabix dom féin,
Bhí bainne á lorg agam, Do mo chearc álainn, ghleoite. Tar éis tamaill, thugas fé ndeara Go raibh búistéir i measc an tsiopa, Le scian dhearg agus mála plaisteach.

Thiomáineas an carr
Suím ar an mbus
An Chearc
Ach is ansan a bhí sí
Go ciúin agus go compordach
Lá amháin bhíos ag tiomáint
Ag féachaint orm
Ag féachaint agus ag smaoineamh
timpeall na háite i mo charr nua.
Cearc mhór dhearg
Faoin saol lasmuigh.

Áit speisialta idir Abhainn an Scáil agus an Daingean is ea an áit go nglaoim mo bhaile air.
Do chonaiceas siopa trasna an bhóthair
Cím gach saghas ruda ón mbus, Cím na leanaí óga
Agus na ba timpeall an bhaile ar fad.

"Beidh féasta breá againn anocht," a cheapas, ar mo shlí abhaile
Nach ait é go gcím,

Ó bharr an Stricín síos go Tobar Naomh Eoin Baiste
Ach bhíos tugtha traochta
Uaireanta le stoirmeacha fíochmhara agus uaireanta deas séimh ciúin.
Agus cuirim orm mo chuid éadaigh scoile,
- Liam Ó hÓgáin 4ú Bliain
Agus thosnaíos ag siúl abhaile,
Agus as go brách linn,
Agus suím síos go compordach
Ag teacht ó mo mhéar

Bíonn sé difriúil ann i rith an Gheimhridh, braitheann an áit draíochtúil.
Tarraingíonn mo mháthair amach as an leaba mé,

An Bus Bán Téim ar an mbus ar scoil
