While we are all spending so much more time in our homes, and looking for new forms of distraction, for those of you with access to the internet, there is no limit to the topics available to entertain you (and apologies to those who are limited by either poor, or no internet access at all!) In this article I will suggest some pages/ sites/areas that are worth exploring, all providing a huge amount of material available at no cost. Even if you are not ‘on’ Facebook, you can still access the Facebook pages of the Kerry County Museum, https://www.facebook.com/KerryCounty-Museum-121924824523387/, the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, https:// www.facebook.com/Kerry-Archaeologicaland-Historical-Society-196539573713424/, and, of course, our own page at https://www. facebook.com/DinglePeninsulaMuseum/. New links are added almost every day to all of these, highlighting places you can go to ‘attend’ talks, courses or read articles and books available on line, or just providing snippets of interesting information. Another page worth following is facebook.com/trasnanatire/, run by a group of history enthusiasts which hosts on-line lecture series covering all aspects of Irish History. Find out more here: https://www.trasnanatire.ie/. Abarta Audio Guides, whose mission is ‘to help people to appreciate Ireland’s incredible heritage’, host the Amplify Archaeology Podcasts, and you will find an interesting selection of interviews here: https://www.abartaheritage.ie/amplifyarchaeology-podcast/. Many of the guides produced by the company are also free of charge,
and you can peruse them here: https://www. abartaheritage.ie/audioguides/?product_ orderby=price. The Royal Irish Academy, an ‘independent academic body that promotes study and excellence in the sciences, humanities and social sciences’, hosts Irish History Online, and there is plenty to explore here: https://www.ria.ie/ irish-history-online/about. The Academy also has its own YouTube channel, where you can find talks on all sorts of topics, not just related to heritage: https://www.youtube.com/user/ theroyalirishacademy/featured. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the body responsible for the development of our road and rail infrastructure, has always been very responsible with regard to any archaeological material that might be encountered during their works. This material has been made available in various formats, over the years, and now much of it is available free, on line, at https://www. tii.ie/technical-services/archaeology/roadarchaeology/. The Discovery Programme, Centre for Archaeology and Innovation Ireland, hosts a variety of digital resources, including those on Sketchfab, with which we have been involved in a small way, through our www. corcadhuibhne3D.ie project. You can explore their offerings here: http://www. discoveryprogramme.ie/resources/digitalresources. Their podcasts are also well worth a listen: http://www.discoveryprogramme.ie/ resources/digital-resources/86-resources/ digital/308-discovery-programme-podcasts. They also have a book available as a free download: http://www.discoveryprogramme.

You can explore the locations (on line, at least!) and some basic information about all of the country’s monuments on the Historic Environment Viewer of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, https://www.archaeology. ie/archaeological-survey-ireland/historicenvironment-viewer-application. And to augment your exploration of any one area, have a look at the Heritage Maps page of the Heritage Council, whose vision is that our heritage ‘is enjoyed, managed and protected for the vital contribution that it makes to both our social and economic well-being’, https://www. heritagecouncil.ie/projects/heritage-maps. Trinity College offers free on-line courses, and it is worth keeping an eye on this page to see what is currently available: https://www.tcd.ie/ OnlineEducation/free-online-course/. Ones to look out for are The History of the Book in the Early Modern Period, and another on The Book of Kells. Archaeology Ireland, a quarterly magazine which has been in production since 1987 and is aimed at both professional and non-professional readers, offers some sample issues and articles for free. Saving Energy Tips at home FacingCost Financial Difficulty
Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?
Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne
A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.
We are all reluctantly getting used to our new normality, however strange it may seem, and phrases like “social distancing” and “flattening the curve” which meant nothing to us a few short months ago, are now accepted as everyday phrases in our new and altered lives. Map out your monthly spend:
Start with your bank statements over the last six months to see where you are spending your money. It may help to create a spread-sheet and divide your spending into categories. 2.
Calculate your shortfall:
By taking your income into account you will see how much of a deficit or shortfall you may have. Include savings in your budget spread-sheet to see how long you can bridge the shortfall. 3.
Separate essential and non-essential spending:
This will help you to focus your mind on where you can cut back on spending. Essentials include food, utility bills, transport, mortgage repayments or rent, and insurance. Non essentials include hobbies, saving money, buying new clothes etc. You may find that by cutting back on the non essentials that you can bridge your shortfall, but if not, you may need to cut back on some of the essentials too. 4.
See what bills or payments you can delay:
If you find that cutting back on all non essentials and some essentials still doesn’t bridge your shortfall, you may need to postpone certain payments or bills. You will need to contact your service provider to arrange this. During this crisis, a lot of companies will look at each case compassionately. It is important to tackle any financial pressure head on. By leaving your problems on the long finger you are only delaying what you are going to have to face one way or another in the near future. Facing up to your financial problems gives you back some control and may lift some weight off your shoulders. 6 West Kerry Live

Farming News
the Chief Medical Officer (Dr Tony Houlihan) in the Department of Health and the HSE in relation to COVID-19.
Louis Murchan
Farmers, like everyone else are reminded that they should continue to follow the advice being given by the HSE. In particular: wash your hands regularly; cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when you cough and sneeze; keep a social distance etc. Please keep up-to-date with the HSE website: https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/coronavirus. html for further information.
STATEMENT ON COVID-19 The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Healthare working closely to meet the pressures of the Covid-19 crisis. They have devised a business continuity plan to maintain essential services but will be taking all of the precautions necessary to protect its staff and its clients, consistent with HSE advice to ensure that: •
Farmers and processors can continue to operate effectively and keep supply lines open
•
DAFM can keep offices open and provide essential services during the crisis.
Keeping marts, factories and creameries open will hopefully keep cash flowing and enable farmers to continue to produce. Institutions are asked to co-operate and facilitate this crunch situation, as it is more important to keep the flow of food to the community than the flow of profits to the hedge and vulture funds and large financial institutions. Remember it is those same institutions that we the community bailed out in 2009. Subject to lock-down advice and other matters relating, it is essential that all important animal-related matters such as payment processing, TB testing, animal welfare inspections, animal identification and passport issuing, BVD testing, controls at livestock marts and animal export certification continue. However, farm inspections should not continue at present, as this brings the heightened danger of close contact between farmers and DAFM staff, with resultant risk and exposure.. Agri-businesses which depend on DAFM supervision, inspection, control and certification to operate need to be kept open, but again, care is essential not to put individuals or whole sectors at risk. At this time of crisis, and with the financial squeeze currently experienced and that anticipated in the near and mid-term future, it is essential that DAFM prioritise their activities, and ensure that applications for schemes and grants are processed and payments issued as soon as possible. Without these same payments, farmers will be forced (possible by bank, etc) to sell livestock early, when not ready for market, exacerbating their losses in an already depressed market. Farmers need to be protected, as they are currently the lifeforce of our community. Despite an offer by the EU to extend the closing date of the BPS 2020 deadline, DAFM (in their wisdom) has rejected this offer. (This is good, because it keeps us advisors on our toes, and we don’t really deserve a social or family life, anyway). But rest assured, all BPS applications are being submitted, and all farmers will have their payment application in for processing, on time. TAFM’s argument is that the BPS application date will not change as any delay in inspections or change to the application date may lead to delays in payments later in the year. Would it not be better to have our payments delayed (in some cases for just a month, or less), but we are sure to get our application in, and be sure that we will receive our payment in the first place. The mind boggles! However, despite these hiccups, there is no need for the general public to be worried about continuity of supply of Irish food and drinks. Senior Department officials met Food Drink Ireland, in MArch to discuss contingency planning for the food processing sector. Food processors, along with all other businesses and employers, are implementing business continuity plans to deal with possible disruption. There are no food safety implications arising from Covid-19, and there is no evidence that the virus can be spread through food products. In the longer term, there may be significant economic impacts for Irish business, including the agri-food sector, arising from reduced demand in key markets around the world. A range of supports for businesses have already been announced and more are expected and hoped for. The Government has written to the Agriculture Commissioner Wojciechowski, seeking a very significant economic package to respond to the crisis, to ensure that the full range of market supports available under the Common Market Organisation Regulation are available to the Irish food sector. DAFM will continue to monitor the situation and is following the advice of 8 West Kerry Live
CREED ENCOURAGES SUCKLER FARMERS TO APPLY FOR GRANTS OF UP TO €8,000 UNDER THE €35 MILLION BEEP-S The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, T.D., has reminded farmers and their advisors that the online application process for both the Beef Environmental Efficiency Programme - Suckler (BEEP-S) for 2020 and the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) is open until 15 May 2020. Suckler farmers should ensure that they apply for the BEEP-S programme in time so as to ensure that they get the full benefits of this new Programme. So far, over 5,400 farmers have already applied for BEEP-S. Separately all farmers are reminded to apply online for the 2020 BPS which is the largest direct payment scheme paid to Irish farmers every year. Applications recevived for BPS are significantly ahead of previous years, with 50,800 applications submitted so far. BEEP-S, which has a funding provision of €35 million in 2020, will target the weaning efficiency of suckler cows and calves - measuring the live weight of the calf at weaning as a percentage of the cow's live weight. In recognition of the important role of animal health and welfare in economic and environmental efficiency, participants in the programme will also be encouraged to implement a number of optional health and welfare measures. If participants take on the additional measures along with the weight recording measure, they will be eligible for a payment of up to €90 for the first ten suckler cow/calf pairs per herd, and up to €80 per pair thereafter, subject to an overall maximum of 100 pairs per herd. BEEP-S Programme actions are as follows: Mandatory weighing action: €50 per first ten cow/calf weighing per herd (and €40 per cow/calf weighing thereafter), This action measures the ratio of calf weight at weaning to maternal weight, enabling farmers to readily identify their most economic and environmentally efficient suckler cows in their herd. Optional action: €30 for an additional welfare action, with a choice of either a vaccination programme or a pre-weaning meal feeding programme. This action will improve the health and welfare of suckler calves at weaning time. Optional action: €10 for a further option – participation in a faecal egg testing programme. This action is targeted at the control of liver and rumen fluke in adult suckler cows, improving animal health and welfare. Grants of up to €8,100 are available for Suckler farmers under BEEP-S. •
Applications must be made online and the application window will remain open until 15 May 2020, which is also the closing date for the Basic Payment Scheme.
•
BEEP participants from 2019 are not automatically included in BEEP-S and must apply for the programme.
Examples : A Suckler herd of 20 can avail of up to €1,700 for full participation in the options available while a herd of 40 can avail of up to €3,300. The maximum payment is for 100 Cow/Calf pairs with a total payment of €8,100 based on participation in the options available. 2020 BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME DEADLINE APPROACHES The deadline for receipt of the 2020 BPS Applications is fast approaching. Due to “social-distancing” and common sence, this has to be done largely on a remote basis, this year. However, all advisors are “open for business” and in the words of Hal Moore, “Nobody gets left behind”. Farmers with other (non-essential) queries or requirements are asked to hold off on those until this very important deadline is met, and all BPS applications are filed with the Department. All applications are submitted on-line through the Department’s agfood.ie portal. This allows them to be submitted securely in a fail-safe fashion. There is no need to sign any document or post any forms by registered post. Anyone who has not yet contacted their advisor,
Pat Hanafin
are advised to do so immediately, as time is running out. The closing date for submission of these forms is Friday 15th May 2020. CREED ANNOUNCES EARLY COMMENCEMENT OF GLAS BALANCING PAYMENTS WORTH €26M TO FARMERS GLAS balancing payments commenced last week and continue, as DAFM staff are working through the current COVID-19 crisis. Over €26m in payments will be issued to over 42,300 farmers in the scheme and will reach their accounts from this week. These are the final 15% of the 2019 payment. Anyone who do not receive payment by early to Mid May should contact their advisor, but be advised that they are pre-occupied with getting BPS 2020 Application completed before the 15th May Deadline. FOREST FIRE DANGER RATING Warning – It is illegal to light fires on commonages or hills and anyone caught doing so run the risk of prosecution, loss of income and imposition of large penalties. We are currently in a Condition Orange – High Fire Risk period, arising from continued high pressure which has dominated our weather in recent weeks. A high fire risk is deemed to exist in all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist. Based on recent fire incidents, most ignitions risks appear to be associated with illegal burning of upland vegetation. Additional caution is also required in areas where active turf cutting is taking place. Members of the public intending to visit forests and other recreational sites are reminded of the requirement to remain within 2km of their homes and to adhere to regulations introduced to limit the spread of Covid-19. Vehicles should not be parked at site entrances or impede emergency service access to forest roads. Fire behaviour and initial spread rates are likely to be influenced by lower afternoon humidity levels and light to moderate wind speeds during the lifespan of this warning, and wind speeds may exceed 30km/h is some areas. So, Be careful and be sensible. Don’t start fires, as it only puts the public and more importantly, the fire service and the Gardai at risk. And yourselves.

Get Lost! I mean that in the nicest possible way! This morning I felt a bit stressed, my heartbeat was too fast, so I went for a slow walk around my field. There’s a mindfulness practice wherein you choose a spot, then you walk really, really slowly while paying attention to your breath and every movement you make. You slow right down being aware of your surroundings. You tune in to all your senses, touch and hearing too. I became immediately distracted by the very perfect white sphere of a dandelion seed head. I went for my phone to take the perfect photo, but then decided to slow down in a different way.
Gáirdín Mhuire Centre Green Street, Dingle
I got a stool and sat near the dandelion and its yellow companions and sketched it. Then I sat near some tiny wild strawberry blossoms, then some dramatic orange maple leaves, working my way along the path. The cat found me and we had a happy cuddle. The purr is always proof! I brought this purry feeling inside myself. She cleared off and I continued drawing, loving the light, the warmth, the buds breaking through on the lean branches of the Spanish chestnut tree.

Come for Dinner... Dinner
I’m suggesting that you too get lost in nature and drawing. Use any materials you like and have handy – chalk, pencils, biros, markers, paint. You don’t need to be in a big garden to do this. If you have weeds growing, all the better! To stay in tune with nature you can make charcoal with burnt twigs (olive trees are traditional). Make ink with very strong coffee. Cook gorse flowers in a little water to get a pretty lemon yellow colour. Cook onion skins for a darker shade that you can use as a watercolour. Try anything you think might give colour.
Due to Covid 19 - Coronavirus restrictions Gairdín Mhuire Hairdresser Day Care Centre is Art temporarily closed.

In the interim the Centre Dance Nurse is providing daily delivery of dinner to our clients and Chiropodist Acupuncture to other eligible people, as requested. The charcoal will make nice smudgy marks. Don’t worry about accuracy. If there is something you love in what you are looking at - the curve and flow of a wild garlic flower for example - focus on that. Exaggerate it, let your feelings get mixed in there. If you pay attention to your feelings you will feel much happier, accepting them just as they are. By drawing you will do this without even trying! - Una Ní Shé Urraithe ag Cumann Sláinte Intinne Chorca Dhuibhne.

Stress and Anxiety in a CovidCrazy World Irene Ní Fhlannúra
We are just over six weeks in to our new normal and for many people the change to the day to day living is so great that it may take a while to be accepted as normal. This state of uncertainty is a major trigger for heightened levels of stress and anxiety in the general population and for those who were already experiencing symptoms of stress and anxiety, the new reality may be overwhelming. On top of it all are the endless tales of hidden agendas, conspiracy theories, fake news and doomsday predictions for the future – it makes for a very unsettling time for even the most resilient amongst us. It is in moments like these that the established pillars of good health – exercise, nutrition, relaxation and sleep – provide solid focal points to help us navigate our way through this current crisis and emerge from it stronger and healthier than ever. Nutrition has long been considered as a co-factor to our mental health and well-being and the approach to managing this crisis is no different to others when s €35 Nails spending it comes to choosing good mood food. beans, dark green vegetables and lentils. Be wary of neuro-disruptors such as alcohol and caffeine, which also affect our sleep, relaxation and motivation to exercise. Getting back to nutritional psychiatry, researchers have established the biological pathways related to anxiety and other mental health disorders which include inflammation, oxidative stress, gut microbiome, epigenetics (to do with our genes) and neuro-plasticity (the ability of the brain to change continuously throughout an individual's life). Every one of these pathways are affected by the food we eat. Omega 3 and healthy fats from oily fish, seeds, nuts, olive oil and avocado are anti-inflammatory and sustain neuro-plasticity. Antioxidants, rich in colourful fruit and vegetables combat oxidative stress, inflammation and influence gene expression. We have discussed the gut microbiome already. Conversely, junk food, sugar and processed foods have an adverse effect on all the above over time and an immediate impact on your mood status. Sugar, MSG and many food additives directly impact on your neurotransmitters, knocking them out of whack and sending you into a state of increased stress and anxiety. The amount of stress you feel at any given time is dependent on your circumstances but also on your perception of those circumstances, which can be profoundly influenced by your nutritional status and the other pillars of good health mentioned above. Covid-19 has shocked and rocked our world. It is normal to feel uneasy and anxious about it. Fortunately, we are adaptable and resilient once we accept our new normal and build a strategy for it. With that in mind, grab a pen, plan your meals, stay calm and carry on cooking! Brothers Take To The Saddle For Cancer Fundraiser
The event is called Ride It Out, as we are riding out this storm together as a community. The brothers are very aware of the importance of funding for the Irish Cancer Society now that this year's Daffodil Day was cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. The event can be followed on Ride It Out 36 on either Instagram or Facebook. Donation links are on both sites. The money is being raised through a GoFundMe page, and to date over €2,600 has already been contributed. Tom (17) is the reigning Irish under 18 Cycling Champion while Mikey is an ultra-endurance cyclist having completed the Transatlantic Way Ultra Race last summer and is also a serving officer in the Defence Forces.
Does your Septic Tank need to be emptied? WE WILL GET TO YOU WITHIN A DAY!!
Mikey and Tom Moriarty Brothers Mikey and Tom Moriarty from Castlegregory are raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society by doing three 12 hour shifts cycling on a stationary bicycle.. The reason they chose three 12 hour shifts is to mirror the working week of a healthcare worker. The event will take place from Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25 April. The pair will be cycling on turbo trainers and using the online cycling platform Zwift which will allow people to virtually join in with them. 14 West Kerry Live

Saved in Dingle Harbour
From – Express (London), 30 March 1847
From – Kerry Evening Post, 16 April 1898
The Dingle fishermen supply Kerry, and occasionally the Cork markets with fish, but, besides very inefficient tackle, pier and harbour accommodation all around the peninsula is very bad. Ventry and Smerwick afford no shelter from the prevailing winds – westerly and north-westerly.
On Saturday, about 3.30pm, a man named Daniel McGillycuddy launched a punt for the purpose of boarding his smack, the Lizzie, which lay at anchor about 200 yards from the shore. Through the medium of a single oar he propelled the punt, but when about 150 yards out the oar lost its hold and the rower fell helplessly into the water. One of the crowd who witnessed the accident, Mr. Patrick Brosnan, disposing only of his coat and watch, dashed into the water at once and reached the drowning man in the nick of time. Here must be mentioned a no less courageous act on the part of Mr. Thomas Sheehy who leaped from the pier into the water, arriving in time to render Brosnan considerable assistance in carrying McGillycuddy, who was partly unconscious, to shore. It must be remarked that this is not the first life that P. Brosnan has been instrumental in saving.
Accident at Sea From – Kerry Evening Post, 20 January 1894 The barque Berna, with a cargo of logwood, was severely damaged in stormy weather when crossing the Atlantic from the Caribbean. She was taken in tow by the Clyde steamship Valentia. However, while trying to secure the hawser, by which, on Saturday morning last the Berna was towed into Valentia, the hawser snapped. The whiplash effect of the hawser broke the leg of the Valentia’s quarter-master, Dingle man John Sullivan. The ship’s first mate was also injured.
Jail Break
To encourage the deep sea fishing along that coast, the Board of Works are about to erect a pier at Brandon bay, on the north of the peninsula, and also smaller piers at Dingle and Ventry. All will prove of vast advantage. Dingle Port News From – Kerry Evening Post, 5 April 1843. Sailed – on the 3rd, for Liverpool with oats, the James Boyce and Oxonian. Remaining in harbour – the Alice, taking in oats for Bristol. Undergoing repairs – the Julia of Millford, Owen Reece, master. Also, the Mary Eliza, Saxby master, repairing, having been driven ashore at Ventry. Wind-bound – The George of Kinsale, Stamp, master, with oats for Bristol. [Interesting to note that four of the above vessels were carrying oats from Dingle to Liverpool and Bristol - two years before the Famine].
117 Years Old From – Aberdeen Press, 28 December 1767 A few days ago died, at Skibbereen [Caherscullibeen], near Dingle, in Ireland, aged 117, Darby Neal, labourer. He retained his sight and senses to the end.
From – Saunders’s News-Letter, 8 February 1781 Tralee, Jan, 24. Last Tuesday morning about two o’clock, a number of men, armed with guns and swords, came to the jail of this town. With a key they opened the door and some of them entered and brought out the noted Arthur Bible, who had been committed under the assumed name of John Pierce. He was jailed for the robbery of Mr. Hussey’s house at Dingle. The above Bible, we are assured, is very dextrous in eluding justice. Various robberies in various counties are laid to his charge. Since his committal, we discovered that Mr. Hussey’s few articles of plate were concealed in a sand bank near Dingle. In searching, a large quantity of plate, belonging to the earl of Shannon was also found hid there. [Plate: items such as plates made of gold or silver].
Ship Aground From – Caledonian Mercury, 4 November 1745 The Nonpareil, of and from Barbados for Cork with 170 hogsheads of rum is ashore near Dingle. The crew are all saved and part of the cargo.
Castlegregory Drowning From – Dublin Daily Express, 9 March 1858 On Saturday an inquest was held in Castlegregory on the body of a pensioner named Cahill. The evidence was that he went into the village of Castlegregory to pay some debts on Wednesday, after getting his pension. Having met with the wife of another pensioner, they began to drink and continued at it until late into the night.

HISTORICAL TREASURE HUNT. Great to see so many people using their extra leisure time by walking, jogging or cycling areas like Sli na Slainte and other streets and routes around town. I have heard lots of comment from people of all ages that they had not taken much notice before now of the number of (20+) wall plagues, statues and signs mainly erected by Dingle
I am not suggesting our readers should visit all these in the one day but maybe create a treasure trail for your family or friends with various clues over say a 7 day period. Have Fun and enjoy the wonderful history we have around us often missed in the mad rush of modern life. SLĂ N TAMALL!!!

Small Changes: Covid Cleaning
have a fertilising effect in waterways leading to an excessive growth of algae (eutrophication) which saps oxygen from the water resulting in fish kills. Surfactants allow other pollutants to be more easily absorbed by plants and animals and many compounds in cleaning products are known to be directly toxic to aquatic animals and/or affect their growth and reproduction by mimicking their hormones. New research suggests that the volatile organic compounds from spray cleaners may now be as great a contributor to urban air pollution in the developed world as vehicle exhaust fumes and this is all before issues such as packaging waste or the carbon footprint of transporting these products are considered. Non-toxic environmentally friendly cleaning products such as those produced by Ecover are excellent substitutes for the better known but chemical based formulations used in most homes. These plant based products however usually come at a higher financial cost which is a deterrent for many people. There are alternatives to shop bought products that have been tried and tested by previous generations that are as effective (and in some cases more effective) as commercial products as well as being significantly cheaper.
At present it seems that all news stories must have a connection to the Covid-19 pandemic and environmental news is no exception. All forms of media have published the time lapse satellite images of the visible reduction in nitrogen dioxide levels (a toxic gas produced by car engines and industrial activity which is a major contributor to outdoor air pollution) over cities worldwide that are in lockdown and photographs of smog free cityscapes. This is good news because according to the WHO 7 million deaths worldwide each year are attributable to ambient (outdoor) and indoor air pollution. Outdoor air pollution is often reported in the news but household air quality which typically can contain three times higher concentrations of many pollutants than would be found outdoors is not as widely acknowledged. While household air pollution mostly due to the burning of solid fuels for cooking and heating (especially in developing countries), cigarette smoke in enclosed spaces, moulds, mildews and gases such as carbon monoxide and radon, research has shown that household cleaning products, paints and perfumes also significantly reduce the quality of indoor air. The cleaning products we choose are influenced by brand loyalty and the relentless marketing by an industry currently worth over €50 billion annually in Europe alone. I’m sure all readers could finish the following advertising slogans and tunes; Cillit Bang and the….; Mr. Sheen shines….; Hands that do dishes….; There are even people making a living out of documenting which products they use to clean their homes such as Mrs. Hinch (I lost count of her ‘essential’ cleaning products after 25) who has 3.3.million followers on Instagram. Cleaning products are portrayed as miracle substances that eliminate the hard work and drudgery of cleaning grease and dirt, make our homes smell fresh and protect us from disease causing germs. Consequently most consumers pay little attention to the usage directions and proper recommended dosage not to mention the hazardous symbols that are displayed on products which are essentially a mixture of toxic chemicals. Almost all household cleaners contain man made volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the effects of which are difficult to study as the symptoms from regular exposure are slow to develop. However, a recent long term Norwegian led study found that women who work as cleaners or use cleaning sprays regularly have a greater decline in lung health over time (comparable to smoking 20 cigarettes a day over 10 to 20 years) than those who do not. In addition a US study showed that using cleaning sprays once a week could increase your risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder by a third due to the irritation that most cleaning chemicals cause to lining of our airways. While these studies acknowledged the limitations of their work and that more research is needed in this area, anyone who has ever cleaned an oven using the commercial sprays available in the supermarket, used mould and mildew remover or has felt nauseous from the overpowering ‘scent’ of air fresheners should have no difficulty in believing their findings moreover when bleaches, polishes and air fresheners are all known triggers for children and adults who suffer from asthma. Apart from the effects on humans, the impact on the environment especially on aquatic systems can be devastating. Phosphates in detergents 18 West Kerry Live
Washing soda (also known as soda crystals) retails at about €1 per kg and can be found in the laundry section of supermarkets. As well as its use as a laundry aid to remove heavy stains from clothes and a hard water softener, washing soda cuts through grease on cooking hoods and ovens, is an excellent option for cleaning tiles and grout in bathrooms and when used regularly it keeps waste pipes clean fresh and prevents blockages. White distilled malt vinegar (€5 for a 5L in a local Supermarket) is a mild acid which has a multitude of uses apart from flavouring chips. It can be made into an antibacterial cleaning spray by mixing one part vinegar to one part water for counter tops and sinks. Add a few drops of essential oils or soak citrus peels in the vinegar if you don’t like the smell. It’s a good scrub when used with baking soda and is unparalleled in its use to achieve streak free clean windows when buffed with newspapers (there is a good reason why most window cleaners in the supermarket state that they have extra vinegar added!) Baking soda (also known as bread soda and bicarbonate of soda; €6.50 for a 3kg bag) is a great cleaner as it is mildly alkaline and abrasive and like vinegar can often be advertised as a component in commercial products. Baking soda is also a deodoriser. A testament to the power of advertising is that people have been convinced that spraying a cocktail of chemicals around their rooms and furnishings is the best way to freshen air and get rid of bad smells despite the fact that baking soda is far more effective at absorbing odours from the air and its non-toxic! An eco-friendly soap (e.g. Liquid Castille Soap, Ecover wash-up liquid), salt (which can be used as a gentle scouring agent or disinfectant), olive oil (combined with vinegar to make furniture polish) and lemons (which can used in many similar ways to vinegar) complete the ingredients list required to make cheap, effective and non-hazardous cleaning products. There are endless resources online detailing how to use these wonder ingredients effectively but a good place to start is with the EPAs greener cleaning guide at www.epa.ie/livegreen. Transitioning to alternative cleaners takes time and a certain leap of faith to be assured your home is as hygienically clean as you assume it is when using commercial cleaners. There are other simple changes that can be adopted though to reduce the amount of industrial products you use and are exposed to. Opening a window is probably the cheapest and most effective air freshener that there is. Measuring out detergents, bleaches etc. and following manufacturer’s instructions will prevent excess hazardous household waste in addition to saving you money. Addressing the source of problems such as placing a hair trap in the shower so the plughole does not get blocked or placing a reusable washable silicone sheet on the base of your oven will prevent or reduce the amount of cleaning and maintenance required. Choosing solid or liquid cleaners over spray formulations to reduce your exposure to VOCs is also highly recommended. COVID-CLEANING Many natural cleaners such as vinegar have a mild anti-bacterial action but despite many claims to the contrary there is no evidence that they kill coronavirus (It is worth noting that commercial antibacterial products do not kill Covid-19 either because it is a virus not a bacterium). Washing your hands regularly and properly with soap and water (hand
sanitiser is only effective on clean hands or gloves) in addition to social distancing is your best defence against coronavirus and any other illness causing microorganism for that matter as it is not possible to constantly disinfect every surface you touch during the day. If you are following these precautions and there is nobody in your home or visiting your home that are showing symptoms of Covid-19 then the use natural products is more than adequate to achieve a hygienically clean home. However, if you are a frontline worker, have a Covid-19 patient in the house or just need extra reassurance then the following are the recommended options for disinfecting your home. Scrubbing surfaces with soap and hot water is very effective as the friction breaks the protective envelope around the virus. Make sure to dry surfaces such as worktops and chopping boards thoroughly and clean germ hotspots such as light switches, outdoor and indoor door handles, taps, worktops and phones on a regular basis. Cleaning aids such as mops and cloths should be washed thoroughly and dried after use and contaminated clothes i.e. bedclothes, should be washed in a 60°C cycle.
of 1 tablespoon (15mls) of bleach to 1 litre of water is the recommended disinfectant solution to apply to a surface. The solution needs to sit for at least 5-10 minutes before wiping off to be effective. Never mix bleach with any product other than water as toxic gases can form. Once diluted a bleach solution is only a potent disinfectant for about 12 hours so you will need to make up a fresh solution every day. Hydrogen peroxide – Usually sold as a 3% solution in pharmacies, this can be left on a clean dry surface for about 1 minute to disinfect it.

Isopropyl alcohol (70% alcohol sanitisers) - Clean the surface with soap and water. Dry thoroughly and then let the sanitiser sit for at least 30 seconds to disinfect the surface. Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
Sunset at Garrywilliam, Maharees as 20 West Kerry Live
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of enphotographed 12 year old Mary ergy,by a system can pay for itself in 5Frances to 10 years. Hennessy

Níor baineadh úsáid as aon nimh riamh sa ghairdín seo ’gainne agus tá a rian san air –‘iontaisí an tsaoil ann’, mar adúirt an file, Seán Ó Ríordáinna, na céadta is na mílte ‘fiailí’/ luibheanna ag fás go rábach ann, lusanna na gcnapán a bhí faoi bhláth ó thus na bliana ach atá ag tréigint le tamall, nóiníní, caisearbháin, neantóga, cupóga sráide, luachair, biolar gréagáin(Léine Muire) a thagann leis an gcuach, adeirtear, ach nach bhfuil aon cheann acu cloiste agam anso timpeall le trí bliana anuas. Tá na fáinleoga thar n-ais, áfach, ‘ón dtír ina mbíonn sé ina shamhradh i gcónaí’ (Eoghainín na nÉan). Deinim amach go bhfuil a feidhm fhéin le gach aon cheann de na luibheanna san ach tá tábhacht ar leith ag baint leis na caisearbháin agus na nóiníní toisc go gcothaíonn siad scata beach, féileacán is feithidí eile trí phailín a chur ar fáil dóibh nuair a bhíonn sé gannchúiseach. Deinim súp as na neantóga go raibh sé ráite ina dtaobh gur cheart duit trí bhéile díobh a chaitheamh ar feadh trí lá san earrach chun an fhuil a ghlanadh. Ar na clathacha in aice láimhe, leanann an éagsúlacht dathanna agus speiceas ar aghaidhflúirse sailchuach (nach deas tráthúil an ainm a tugadh uirthi), samhaircíní a luaití leis na síóga agus le deasghnátha na Bealtaine -scaipeadh leanaí timpeall an tí iad mar chosaint ar na ‘daoine maithe’ agus bhídís ar altóir na Bealtaine i dteannta na gcoinnle corra in onóir na Maighdine Muire. Gan amhras, tá an draighean faoi bhláth bán na n-áirne ina shamhail d’áilleacht an Aibreáin agus den áilleacht bhaineann, chomh maith, mar is follas, ón amhrán, An Droighneán Donn. Bain taitneamh as an bhféasta séasúrtha atá gan faic agus go mbeimid go léir beo ag an am so arís! (Buíochas: Bríd Ní Mhóráin) 22 West Kerry Live

OBITUARY The news of the death of Eileen Wall, nee O Shea, Derrymore West was received with deep sadness and shock by everybody in the community. Due to the current Government restrictions only family members were present at the funeral service on Good Friday. However the ceremony, celebration of The Liturgy of the Word and prayers of commendation for Eileen officiated by Fr. Francis Nolan was streamed live on the worldwide web for the many people who wished to join in. And what was a beautiful ceremony and reflection of Eileens life it was. Among the symbols of Eileens life brought to the Altar was a recording of a robin singing, who ate from Eileens hand every morning, her fishing rod too and crochet and knitting, showing a woman at one with nature and her home and family. And Rebakah her daughter gave a beautiful reminiscence of Eileens life at the end of the service. Fr. Francis in his homily praised Eileen's dedication to local parish and community projects and fundraisers. And what a lovely gesture of honour it was, to see neighbours and friends standing at gates and doorways as Eileens cortege passed on Friday on her final journey to the Church saying goodbye to a woman they highly respected and loved in life. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends and neighbours in the community. Sympathy is extended to her husband Michael, children, Rebekah, Michelle, Shane and Rachel, grandchildren Cian, Allen, Reuben and Molly, sisters Mary and Sarah, brothers, Pádraig and Seamus, daughter-in-law Áine, son-in-law Ivan, Rebekah's partner Ash, Rachel's partner John,
brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, extended family, neighbours, and wide circle of friends. A Memorial to Eileens life will be celebrated at a later date in St. Johns Church, Tralee. Rest In Peace. OBITUARY Helen Kilbride, Cappaclough, Camp passed away peacefully last week in the loving care of the wonderful staff at St. Columbanus Community Hospital Killarney. Helen was a lovely caring person, devoted to her religion and to St. Marys Church. A Sacristan and an Eucharist Minister with the Church. Helen brought the Sacraments to the sick and elderly of the parish as well as attending at Masses in the Church for many years. Helen was predeceased by her husband Jim. Sadly missed by her sister Kate, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives and friends. Requiem Mass took place Tuesday 14th April 2020 in St. Mary's Church Camp followed with Burial in Camp Cemetery. Rest In Peace. WEATHER FOLKLORE Scairbhín na gCuach - The name comes from the Irish, ‘garbh mí na gcuach’ (the rough month of the cuckoo), the period between Apr 15 and May 15 when weather patterns are often changeable and temperature extremes common. salt and pepper Method Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Put a casserole pot on over medium to high heat. Once the pan is hot then add a little oil and then add the chicken. Once they are brown on each side, remove them and turn the heat down a little and add the onion and garlic, season with a little more salt. Cook for a few minutes, add the chorizo, smoked paprika and the stock and the tomato passata. Add the chicken back to the pot (if using a slow cooker, you can now add all this to your slow cooker). The liquid should cover everything. Bring this to the boil and turn it down to a slow simmer and cook for about 1½ hours. Add the potatoes and cook for about 20 minutes. If the potatoes are cooked add the chopped tomatoes and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Bain taitneamh as!!!

Tá an saol trí chéile againn ar fad gan trácht ar na créatúirí atá thíos leis an víoras. Fan amach ón bhfochais. Ní raibh aon chuimhne go mbeadh an víoras mallaithe seo ag béal an dorais againn. Dúradh ar an raidió, go raibh beirt thíos leis i bhFionn Trá, ceathrar sa Daingean, duine i bparóiste na Cille agus beirt sa Leitriúch. Deirimse leat gur baineadh geit asainn. Bhí ordú ag na Gardaí lucht saoire a fhágaint ‘ge baile agus iad siúd go raibh fonn bóthair a stop agus a chur abhaile. Bhí fear go bhfuil tigh i bparóiste Fionn Trá aige ar shlí dtí a thigh conaithe. Stop na Gardaí é, ach scaoileadar leis tréis dó a chás a mhíniú.. Níl fhios agam cad dúirt sé leo. Stopadh arís é agus an babhta seo nfheadar cad dúirt fear tí Fhinn Trá ach cuireadh siar é dtí a thigh é i bFhionn Trá. Iascairí Is dócha gur eagla a bhí ar iascairí an Daingin nuair a chuireadar stop ar lorraí Spáinneach iasc a thógaint ó bhád Spáinneach. Ambaist, agus an cosc atá á chur ar earraí etc ó tíortha eile go raibh lán an chirt ag iascairí an Daingin. Bhí a n-órdaithe féin ag na Gárdaí ach is léir ná raibh eolas ag duine éigin go bhféadfadh an víoras a bheith imeasc an éisc, nó ar, no sa lorraí. Mheas na iascairí go raibh an chluiche caillte acu, ach chaitheadar iad féin ar an dtalamh roimh an lorraí. Le scéal casta a réiteach, fuair lucht an éisc scéala go bhféadfadh siad an t-iasc a chur i dtír i gCorcaigh. B’sheo leo agus chuireadar a gcuid éisc i dtír agus thóg an bád Spainneach a raibh acu i mBaile Chaisleáin Bhéara. Ba chóir a cúrsaí mar seo a chur i láthair na n-iascairí, mar dá mbeadh aon rianán don víoras bheadh an
Caid Ambaist ach go bhfuil TG4 tréis leagadh súl a thabhairt dúinn. Tá cluichí maithe móra á gcur ar fáil dúinn, - iad roghnaithe go maith acu. Bhí saothar agus anbhá ar an dá fhoireann An Clár agus Gaillimh. Thug an Clár na cosa leo agus bhuadar craobh na hÉireann in aghaidh foireann Uí Fháillí. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we build local

skills and capacity in a diverse range of areas with growing employment potential. As part of the ESB Networks Dingle project, Dingle Peninsula 2030 is inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to undertake training and registration processes necessary to become an SEAI registered Technical Advisor to support energy efficiency upgrades of homes, businesses and community facilities. This initiative is also supported by SFI funded "Activating the Energy Citizen" project. For further details see the advert in this issue or www.dinglepeninsula2030.com. The second Interim Report on the Feasibility of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) on the Dingle Peninsula has now been approved by the project steering group and has been published on www. dinglepeninsula2030.com. It is an extensive body of work that provides a very thorough assessment of the potential for AD on the peninsula. We would like to sincerely thank XD Consulting and team, which includes local AD design expert Tim Clarke, for such a comprehensive and informative study. Some of the key findings at this point are that the production of combined heat and power is not a financially viable option and so more detailed designs will focus on plants that produce biomethane. The report recommends a gradual deployment starting with a plant that operates with non animal by-product (ABP) feedstocks for the production of biomethane initially for grid injection and compost from the digestate. In parallel, local markets for compressed biomethane should be developed and national markets will further mature. Once these markets are available, it becomes financially viable to move to a plant incorporating ABP (ie slurry). It is also recommended to include a food-grade CO2 liquefication plant as this would generate substantial additional revenues. The final steps to
complete this study will be to map out potential business models, recommend a financing strategy and advise best practice for community ownership and financial participation. A roadmap for the project development including a 5-year action plan will be produced to help guide the community through project implementation. Over the past 6 weeks, as the COVID-19 pandemic has unfolded ESB Networks have been managing the operations of their business, and focusing on critical roles and front-line activities to ensure they continue to provide a safe and reliable electricity service for the country. They are committed to supporting the government’s plans to ensure the virus doesn’t spread and as a result, the postponement of all public Dingle Project Engagement activities will continue for now. This includes the launch of the Electric Vehicle trial that was planned for early May. But just to keep you updated, Hyundai has won the tender and the model that will be used in the trial is the Kona Electric https://www.hyundai.ie/ home/kona-electric.html. Work is also continuing also on Smart EV Chargers for the home. Anything that they can progress at this point they are, so that once Government eases restrictions and society is ready, they will be in the best shape possible to start this part of the project. They look forward to working with Hyundai and the community when the time is right. Ag guí sláinte agus suaimhneas oraibh na laethanta deacra seo. Stay safe and well everyone. DINGLE BOOKSHOP MAKES A PLEA FOR FAIR TREATMENT Along with all other non-essential businesses we have had to close because of the COVID-19 emergency and sadly our distance from the shop prevents us from offering anything other than an extremely limited service to our customers. We were given to understand that, as self-employed business people, when we were compelled by the government to close we would each be entitled to a weekly payment of €350. We therefore filled in the forms and, having received no payment or reply, I rang our advisor who told us that he had heard that many self-employed people, who like us were already in their seventies, had been having the same problem. And like us they had drawn the wrong conclusion from the wording of the government document relating to the COVID-19 Pandemic Employment payment. The document does indeed say in the first qualifying section "You can apply for the new covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment if you... are aged between 18 and 66 years old", but in the next section it goes on to say: ‘The payment also applies if you are self-employed and your trading income has ceased due to COVID-19’. There must be many owners of small businesses in Dingle who, like us, have built a business to provide a source of income to supplement our pensions. In the 13 years we have owned Dingle Bookshop we have increased not only its profile but its turnover so that we can now draw a small income for ourselves as well as employing two staff. We are aware of the desperate uncertainty that faces a town like Dingle even after the ending of restrictions. Without any emergency help forthcoming from the state, we may be compelled to close down a small business which has become, like so many others, part of the identity of the town. There are many other self-employed local business people over the age of 66 whose contribution to the community and to the economy remains similarly unacknowledged. We understand that there is considerable political support for our position, and are grateful for support and advice from our TD, Brendan Griffin. We hope that as many as possible will write to him to put their own case. It goes without saying that we will do everything we can to keep the bookshop going in some form or other, but being treated more fairly by the Government would make our job much easier.

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Covid-19 Response The GAA acknowledges last weekend’s Government announcement of the extension of current restrictions until May 5th and its impact on the scheduling of sporting events and working practices, and has factored the extension of the arrangements into its contingency planning. To that end, the Association can confirm that club activity remains suspended until May 5th. The Senior Inter-county championships, scheduled to begin in May, will be postponed until further clarity on the current situation is available. However, it is the Association’s view that it is highly unlikely these will be rescheduled any time before the beginning of July, at the earliest. When sporting activity recommences, the GAA will accommodate both club and county games. The Association also intends to complete the Allianz Leagues, or at least those games that have a bearing on next year's divisions, where possible. In keeping with the approach of the Association since the start of this crisis, all of our decisions will be based on the advice of the medical professionals and the government. Finally, the GAA would again like to thank our members and units for their support at this time and for continuing to adhere to the government guidelines. In the meantime, the Association is encouraging all members to continue to follow the guidelines which have been provided by the health authorities. Flatten the Curve The best way to prevent the spread of Covid-19 is by us making a decision to stay at home and avoid all unnecessary travel and follow what the Health Authorities are telling us. By physically distancing ourselves by at least 2m from other people and following the medical advice – Wash - Cover - Avoid - Clean - Stop – Distance. We control ourselves, what we do, say and post so don't wait for others to lead or show you what to do. Please practice social distancing by physically distancing yourself from other people while continuing to talk on phone and online to your family and friends. Look out for your neighbours, ring them to see if they are ok and have a chat. Please be responsible in what you say and publish online and do not spread panic by sharing unverified sources of information or chain messages in WhatsApp or on your Social Media. Stay positive and have a routine which includes exercise. COMMUNITY RESPONSE – NEW FREEPHONE LINE - 1800 807 009
