“BRAND” New Training Initiative Coming to Dingle Peninsula Farmers, fishers, food/drink producers and hospitality providers based on the Dingle Peninsula /Corca Dhuibhne are invited to sign up to an exciting new training programme aimed at providing them with the knowledge and skills to further develop and exploit the culinary attributes of the region. ‘Developing a Sustainable Regional Food Branding Strategy’ for the Dingle Peninsula / Corca Dhuibhne starts on May 11th and consists of a series of modules over 2021/2022 which introduce participants to an impressive group of expert trainers and inspirational guest speakers. A blend of presentations, interactive workshops and discussion clinics will cover a variety of topics including using local and regional ingredients, agri best practice and food tourism, branding, sustainability, marketing and social media. The aim of the programme is to deliver on-going support for the branding of products from sustainable farming, fishing and food production on the Dingle Peninsula/Corca Dhuibhne. It will bring together artisan, micro, agricultural and small hospitality businesses so that collectively they can define the unique features of food on the peninsula, their historic and current stories and emerging vision. The training will be delivered by The Discovery Partnership on behalf of NEWKD. Speaking at the virtual launch, NEWKD’s Board Member Pat O’Shea said, “This new training initiative is an opportunity to bring a diverse group of individuals together to further capture and define the unique food and drink features of the Dingle Peninsula /Corca Dhuibhne. I look forward to seeing how the training facilitates the development of a dynamic strategy which will serve to support a positive and sustainable long term food future for the community.” Training provider, The Discovery Partnership, boasts an experienced team of experts who have facilitated a number of food and food tourism projects, working closely with government bodies including regional development agencies, LEADER / Local Development Companies, LEOs, Bord Bia and Fáilte Ireland. Boland Marketing Managing Director, Caroline Boland will act as programme coordinator. Caroline has an in-depth personal knowledge of the region as she resides in the area and brings a wealth of professional expertise to the programme, thanks to an illustrious career in destination and tourism development. Her key area of expertise is looking at potential tourism destinations and creating road maps for their development as a tourism destination, their visitor experience development, organisational structure, marketing and promotion. Participation on the ‘Developing a Sustainable Regional Food Branding Strategy’ training programme is free but registration is required. From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Dingle Bay Rescue From – Longford Journal, 13 January 1877 Last Wednesday a ship bound for Cork from Prince Edward Island, Canada, was rescued in Dingle Bay by local pilots John and Joseph O’Flaherty. The name of the vessel is James Duncan and she was carrying a cargo of oats. She was crippled in a storm off the Skelligs a few days earlier when her rigging was torn away and her foremast had to be cut down by the crew. The ship was spotted by a person on lookout who raised the alarm. The pilots immediately set off in their smack and came up to the vessel. She was brought safely into Dingle harbour much to the relief of the captain, his wife and their children.

The Age of the Goat From – Tralee Chronicle, 6 May 1862 Dingle solicitor Arthur Benner had a goat that wandered off his property. Mr. Benner believed his two year-old goat was being kept by Daniel Collins and summonsed him. Collins protested his innocence and stated he had bought the goat from an uncle and that the goat was at least seven years old. The court ordered that a man be dispatched to examine the animal to determine its age. This he did and on returning to the court he declared the goat to be around seven years old. The hearing dismissed the summons.

Storms and Wreck From – Cork Constitution, 01 January 1856 West Kerry was lashed by powerful gales and heavy seas at the weekend forcing six vessels to run for shelter in Ventry harbour. Coincidentally, all six were bound for Cork from various parts of the world. The John and Henry, an American ship, was en route from New York with a cargo of flour and wheat. A British ship named Priam had sailed from the Isle of France [Mauritius] with a cargo of sugar. Another British vessel, Susan, was en route from Athens with a cargo of Indian corn. A third British brig, Maryanne, was carrying a cargo of mahogany from Demerara [now Guyana, in South America]. A French schooner, Siria, had arrived from Athens, also with a cargo of Indian corn. The sixth vessel was a Portuguese schooner, Hiate Fiel, with a cargo of fruit. The local Coast Guards under Chief Boatman Garrett Cotter undertook the dangerous task, in heavy seas, to board one of the ships. [Probably to search for smuggled goods or signs of disease such as cholera]. The weather became so violent they had to remain on the vessel all night. During the night, and at the height of the storm, the Hiate Fiel dragged her anchors and by morning was driven on the rocks in the harbour’s eastern shore where she was smashed to pieces. Fortunately, the crew managed to board one of the other ships and there was no loss of life. Her cargo of fruit, mainly oranges and lemons, was battered beyond recovery and scattered around the shore and rocks. A few days earlier local pilot Joseph Flahery and some fishermen went to the assistance of two other vessels that were anchored in a dangerous location in Dingle Bay and brought them safely into Dingle harbour.

Black ’47 From – Kerry Evening Post, 29 December 1847 Last Monday several destitute people from the west of Dingle arrived in the town seeking to have the Relieving Officer put their names on the relief list. Shortly after their arrival seven of them collapsed in the street from hunger and it was feared they would die. Doctor Hickson attended to them and gradually restored them to awareness. However, they were in such poor condition that a priest was summoned to give them the last rites. It was decided not to place them in the fever hospital and accommodation was found for them elsewhere. It is believed that the Relieving Officers, Mr. Moriarty and Mr. Kennedy are unable to cope with the demand for relief that is so badly needed at present. It should be noted that the fishermen of Dingle are also in a state of destitution and severe want and are exhausted from trying to work their fishing boats during this very stormy period. The only boats involved in limited fishing are canoes which don’t demand the same level of physical strength as the larger vessels.

Horsemen at the Gallop From – Kerry Evening Post, 29 April 1893 Two young men were fined at Dingle court this week for galloping their horses through the streets of the town. Constable Sullivan stated that the men, John Curran of Dingle and Daniel Devane of Murreigh had recently ridden their horses at a dangerous gallop through the streets of the town including up Main Street and down Green Street. The court was told by District Inspector Lowndes that such dangerous activity by young horsemen was becoming more and more common. It was also reported that a man was almost killed in Aunascaul in recent days in a similar incident. Captain Keogh stated that such behaviour put the lives of children and elderly people at risk. Curran and Devane were each fined five shillings.

Small Changes

Glorious spring sunshine is not conducive to writing articles. However, a weekend out and about and the statement from Michéal Martin that ‘outdoors is the theme for the summer’ informs this weeks’ short and very simple message – Leave No Trace. Leave No Trace Ireland is an outdoor ethics education programme designed to promote responsible outdoor recreation but the concepts can be applied anywhere from town streets and parks to mountain tops and coasts to our own back gardens. For anyone with a conscience or sense of personal responsibility, the need for a programme like this is a little bewildering but as ever greater numbers of people discover the great outdoors, especially over lockdowns, the mark on the environment through littering, disturbance of vegetation, wildlife and worrying of livestock, is increasing. The education programme promotes consideration of both the environment and other people by following seven principles. 1. Plan Ahead and Prepare- Covid regulations saw huge increases in numbers escaping to the outdoors over the past year. This resulted in many fraught tempers due to traffic jams, queues etc. Avoiding peak visiting times to popular destinations and beauty spots, planning ahead with regard parking and knowledge of the route etc. and planning meals whether that be booking a table/take away or packing a picnic/ snacks all help to reduce stress and enhance enjoyment for yourself and other visitors. Knowing what gear, skills and information might be required for a chosen activity (e.g. hiking boots, rain gear, tide times, maps etc.) also help ensure personal safety and reduce pressure on emergency services. 2. Be Considerate of Others- It is sad to acknowledge that people need to be educated on how to be considerate of others and their property.

Many outdoor activities rely on the goodwill of farmers and landowners to permit access to their lands so it is important to be aware that farms are working environments. Leave gates as you find them, only bring dogs with landowner’s permission, don’t trample crops or damage fencing, avoid all livestock and don’t block entrances to gates or roadways with your vehicle. Public land, beaches and waterways are for the enjoyment of everybody so be aware that your actions can impact the experience of others e.g. don’t block in someone else’s vehicle, be aware of noise pollution, don’t litter etc. 3. Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife- Unfortunately there were many examples of sheep worrying on the hills of West Kerry over the winter months highlighting that a small percentage of dog owners still do not understand the consequences of not managing their pets. Feeding wild animals such as deer not only compromises the animal’s wellness but also compromises the safety of the person feeding them. Staying away from nests, breeding grounds etc. are further examples of how to respect wildlife. 4. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces- This principle is based on the importance of avoiding detrimental impacts on sensitive vegetation and soils. Use established campsites where possible but failing this pitch tents on ground that has been previously compacted or reinforced. Take care of trees in the vicinity of your camp and avoid creating new tracks. 5. Leave What You Find- The idea behind this principal is that you leave what you find as you have found it for others to enjoy. Archaeological and historical artefacts such as holy wells, tombs and cairns should not be disturbed. Carving “Mary woz ‘ere” into a tree or rock is not original and is not appreciated by anybody else. Do not take wild flowers, shells, stones, fossils, tadpoles etc. as souvenirs. Also be aware of what invasive species you may be unwittingly spreading on your travels- clean your boots & camping gear thoroughly; do not bring flowers, weeds to pristine sites etc. 6. Dispose of Waste Properly- In an ideal world all outdoor sites and trails would have well managed litter bins and sanitary facilities but this is not the case and in any event it would be neither practical nor possible in many areas. If you are able to carry a picnic, coffee cup, plastic bottle, sweets, cigarettes etc. on your walk/swim/hike/camping trip, then surely it cannot be that difficult to carry the empty containers/ wrappers home with you? Pack a bag to put your waste into and bring it home. If you own a dog, disposing of its waste properly is part and parcel of being a responsible dog owner. Minimise the Effects of Fire- Whether deliberate or accidental, the devastation caused by fires in Killarney National Park, the Mourne Mountains and Mayo bogs in the past week highlight how quickly fires can escalate in the dry and windy conditions. In addition to the destructive effects that fires can have on ecosystems, the appearance of many outdoor areas can be compromised by campfires/barbeques etc. Training and support on minimising the effects of fire and adopting the other 6 principals can be sought from www.leavenotraceireland.org

worse. Water also helps maintain moist airways, prevent mucus building up and loosen secretions in the lungs that may otherwise harbor diseasecausing viruses and bacteria, including Covid-19. With hayfever kicking off now for many people, it is worth noting that being dehydrated can also trigger histamine release, making symptoms worse and more frequent. When your body is not getting adequate water, histamine production acts as a defensive mechanism to preserve the water remaining in the body. Once your body is dehydrated, the histamine production increases, which causes the body to have the same trigger symptoms as seasonal allergies. For skin, water is protective both inside and out. A decrease in hydration levels alters skin composition leaving it dry and tight, more prone to UV damage and wrinkling. Comparing a plum with a prune is an easy way to visualize dehydration. Muscles, which are 70% water, suffer from fatigue and tightness when dehydrated making activity harder. Cartilage is 80% water and chronic dehydration affects shock absorption and the protection of joints. The brain is 70% water. Its network of nerves and the spinal cord require fluids to receive and send messages effectively. Small decreases in hydration levels, even before we feel thirsty, are felt first in the nervous system with headaches, loss of concentration and fatigue.

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink, a notion that reminds us that even with the opportunity right in front of us, we can ignore the obvious. Perhaps if the horse knew how water is fundamental to all body functions, it would lap it up eagerly and neigh with gratitude. In the fast-paced world of advertising, ordinary water is easily overlooked or seems boring when compared to some of the fancier beverages on offer. Our constant search for the “best thing since sliced pan” confuses the truth about our needs, which is quite ironic, considering sliced pan didn’t turn out that great after all! If we strip away all the trappings of modern living and focused on our basic survival needs - water, food and shelter make the core list, in that order – everything else is optional. As simple as it is, there has never been so many challenges to the availability, quality and sustainability of these fundamental needs. In Ireland, water is never out of the news from the Irish with pollution, contaminated drinking water, leaks and scattered showers – not a day goes by that we are not reminded of water. Despite this, we are literally dying of thirst because for most of us, we just don’t drink enough of the stuff to hydrate properly. The human body is made up of sixty percent water, we are predominately water and without water we would die in a matter of days. While this is unlikely to happen here, there is a real risk that we are placing undue stress on every organ and system in the body by not consuming enough water. Age, exercise, body size, level of sweat, health conditions, use of medications and environment are all factors on just how much water we need. All things considered, the average adult needs to replace just over 2.2L daily through fluids and foods, a little more than the eight glasses per day. Juicy fruits and veg, broths, soups and herbal teas can also contribute to your daily quota. Water is required to regulate temperature in the body, sweating being a good example. Not only does water cool the skin but each bead of sweat takes a little heat away from the body. If we do not drink enough water, are we going to heat up and explode? Probably not, but the body will tire easily and will require longer time for recovery. Good to know if you are exercising or fighting a fever! Water is the carrier of many waste products and toxins via the kidneys and bowel. Dehydration will affect both these organs systems, even at a marginal level. The number one cause of constipation is insufficient fluid supply. High fibre foods in the intestines absorb and hold on to water. This keeps the stool soft, large and easy to pass. If we do not drink enough water, the body will take water from the stool leaving small, hard bits of stool that are uncomfortable to pass. Kidneys are responsible for the elimination of much of our protein waste by-products, mineral salts, toxins and uric acid. Without a steady, sufficient supply this waste can build up and cause damage to the kidneys and urinary system, affecting joints and other parts of the body. The composition of our blood is governed by the kidneys as it keeps it contents stable. Blood itself is made up of about 90% water, an insufficient intake can raise blood pressure and increase the thickness of the blood. Bones, muscles and all body tissue and fluids require water for efficient function. Fat, on the other hand just doesn’t mix with water inside or outside the body. This explains why people who have high body fat percentages or obese, are frequently dehydrated and will not re-hydrate easily even if consuming the recommended amount of fluids. Our bodies are always adjusting to maintain homeostasis and stability. For us to be well, we must tune in to our innate warning system. Listen for alerts, distinguish and act upon the real threats to our existence, which ultimately boil down to water, food and shelter! Now, where did that horse go, we’ve got some talking to do! The names of fields, rocks, inlets, bóthairíns, landing places, humps, hollows and so on contribute immensely to the rich tapestry of times past. Through a study of their etymology, some of the layers of our history can be partially unveiled. ‘Urlann’, ‘Páirc an Ráithín’ and ‘Cathair na Faithche’ reflect the presence of pre-Christian forts while ‘The Bán’ and ‘Gort na Sciath’ depict Dinner past agricultural land use. Calaithe an Bháid, Calaithe an Ghrin, Calaithe Léin and the Cé, all landing places, indicate the importance of the sea for fishing and as a means of transport for the inhabitants of Oileán tSeanaigh. Many place names would not have been preserved had they not been handed down through the years. We therefore must acknowledge the contribution of past generations in preserving this important aspect of Hairdresser our heritage. It is curious to note that multitudes of wild swans have been for generations in the habit of yearly visiting this small lake that lies so far to the west on the seaboard of the Atlantic. There were about eight hundred swans here during the unexampled frost of January 1881. When a shot was fired they rose together, as one grand white cloud, and left for the sea, but always returned ere nightfall. Farming News Louis Murchan RESULTS BASED ENVIRONMENT-AGRI PILOT PROJECT (REAP) LAUNCHED The max payment in this pilot measure is €6,900/farmer, but it is very unlikely that anyone will achieve this. In fact many, or most will achieve absolutely nothing financially out of this, ans there is only enough funding available for 2000 farmers. That is approximately 77 farmers per county, or 3.5 farmers per advisor. This is not what one would call a good start. Why farm organisations, agricultural associations or individuals are accepting this situation is unclear. But this is what we were offered recently, in terms of “A New REPS”. Called a Transitional Measure, its not really that, more of a quick-fix that was designed by a committee of non-academic bureaucrats in Soviet Russia in the early seventies, to stem the floor of capitalism in the Gulags in The Stepps. I kid you not. Minister Jim Hacker and his advisors, Sir Humphray and Bernard couldn’t have come up with as bad a proposal, in “Yes, Minister”. And that was only fiction. To offer the farming community a scheme, turn it into a lottery and tell everyone that they need to apply, or get your advisor to carry out a “selection of the fittest” type screening is a long way away from REPS. Minister McConalogue is new to the game, and third choice for the job, but to describe this as such: “REAP is an ambitious, innovative and exciting new pilot programme. It will identify returns from specific farm measures while delivering a key new income to farmers.” But, to who and to how many, Minister? However, down to some to the specifics: To qualify land can be owned, leased or rented, but land entered should be retained for the duration of the contract or penalties may apply. Two hectares is the minimum and 10ha is the maximum except in the case of partnerships. There was initially a possibility that advisors may submit only 10 applications but now they may submit as many as they like. However, of these only 5 – 6 of these will be selected, by DAFM!!!! This turns the scheme into more of a lottery than an agri-environmental scheme. The scheme will run for the remainder of 2021 and the duration of 2022 and there will be only be one tranche and it will not reopen for new applicants in 2022. Hopefully there will be a more comprehensive and thought-out scheme offered to farmers coming out of GLAS in 2023. To apply, all applications must be submitted by an agricultural advisor and must be submitted by May 10th. Initially, “Expression of Interest” applications will be submitted which will incur a low cost, but for those selected to participate fully, larger costs will be involved. The advisor does not need to assess the land until after the training takes place in June. Approval letters will issue in May and will be issue to the applicant, but the advisor will receive notification of approvals. Farm Partnerships may apply the same as any other farm entity. Once approved, farm checks by DAFM Inspectors will take place at payment stage to ensure that all participants are eligible for the project. All applicants must have submitted a valid 2020 BPS application including all lands to be entered into REAP and anyone who was ever approved into REPS, AEOS or GLAS are not allowed apply, nor are participants in any locally based agri-environmental schemes or Organic Farmers. Commonage land does not come under the scheme and no payments will be derived from maintain lands. Selection will be by ranking, so you will be compared with your neighbour, and not be judged on your own merit. If your neighbour is lucky enough to be better off than you financially, and have a better “set-up” that you, lucky him. You lose. HEDGHOG SURVEY Among all the “doom and gloom” here’s something that may raise a smile. Hedgehogs are such lovable little creatures, and so beneficial to our ecosystem, that there are little friends that we must protect. The first bit of advice is that if you see one on the road, slow down and let him pass. The Irish Hedgehog Survey is seeking to build a greater understanding of hedgehog distribution and population status across the island of Ireland. 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The hedgehog is one of Ireland’s most familiar mammal species, yet there is a dearth of information on its status in Ireland. Studies from Britain and elsewhere in Europe have found that hedgehog numbers are in steep decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation from changing farming practices and development. As the environment in Ireland is experiencing similar pressures the hedgehog population in Ireland may be similarly affected. This study will provide baseline data on the distribution and status of hedgehogs in Ireland in order to fill the gap in our knowledge. The survey is a collaborative project between researchers in NUI Galway and the National Biodiversity Data Centre. How you can help? As hedgehogs are nocturnal they are not often seen in the wild unless they are found dead on roads, or if they are regular visitors to gardens at night. The Irish Hedgehog Survey is looking to receive any sightings of live or dead hedgehogs to build up a more detailed picture of where they occur. If you see a hedgehog, please report the sighting using the Irish Hedgehog Survey recording form, available on their website. In addition to collecting casual hedgehog sightings, the Irish Hedgehog Survey is seeking volunteers to participate in a more focused survey using footprint tunnels or camera traps to survey for hedgehogs in the garden. No specialist training is required and a simple footprint tunnel can be made at home. The survey will run between the start of June and the end of September. You can find information here https://www.irishhedgehogsurvey.com/. There is also a questionnaire for farmers to answer about hedgehogs on their land. It is a short, simple survey and the results will be very helpful in mapping the distribution on hedgehogs in the Irish countryside. The Irish Hedgehog Survey is also looking to receive any hedgehog corpses. If you find a dead hedgehog, for example, a roadkill animal, please collect the specimen, place in a plastic bag (double bag if necessary), labelled with the date and location, and contact NUI Galway (elaine.oriordan@ nuigalway.ie) to arrange a collection. If possible, please chill or freeze the specimen until collection. A little information about hedgehows won’t go astray: They are known as the West European Hedgehog, but are native to Ireland. They are one of our most instantly recognisable mammal species with their spiny coats. Adult hedgehogs measure between 15cm and 30 cm and weigh up to 2kg while juveniles are smaller. They are found throughout the country and will live in farmland, woodland, gardens and parks. They avoid very wet areas and conifer plantations and they are scarce in upland regions. They favour habitats with good cover of bushes and hedgerows which provide them with shelter, food and corridors to travel through the countryside. They are solitary animals and they may have several, temporary nests that they use to rest during the day. Animals are usually most active from April to October, but they can occasionally be seen also during the winter months. While there is existing data on hedgehog distribution in Ireland, there is still much to learn about its precise habitat preferences. Hedgehogs emerge at night to feed on insects such as beetles and other small invertebrates like millipedes and snails. They will also opportunistically feed on carrion, eggs, frogs and fallen fruit. If hedgehogs encounter danger, they will roll into a ball with spines raised to protect themselves. The badger is the only effective predator of hedgehogs in Ireland. Females usually have one litter per year with most hoglets born in June and July. Breeding can take place between April and September but litters born later in the season may not have time to grow big enough to survive hibernation. Hedgehogs are true hibernators – they hibernate during the winter months, but if the weather is very mild, they may wake up to feed. TIPS FOR FARMERS APPLYING FOR A HERD NUMBER Apart from lland and livestock, the next most important thing you need is a Herd Number. Sometimes a new number will be required, and other times, you will just need to re-register an existing number. Either way, it is a simple process. The application process is simple. Each applicant has to fill out two forms called ER1 and ER1.1. These are then submitted along with ownership or lease agreements of the land that each applicant is going to farm. Usually, a farm inspection occurs after the application is processed to assess the farm and housing and handling facilities. Applying for herd numbers takes

time, so any first-time entrants need to get their housing, handling and possible boundary fencing up to standard now before applying. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, most DAFM staff, similar to most workers, are working remotely, which results approval delays, so ensure that sufficient time is allowed. The majority of farmers, who are applying for a herd number, will also be applying for Basic Farm Payment Scheme. Some will need to transfer entitlements; others apply for the Young Farmer’s Scheme. All Basic Payment applications must be completed before May 17th. It will benefit the application process if the herd number is in place, enabling all applications to be completed correctly and on time. Regarding the ANC scheme, to comply with this scheme, you must achieve an annual stocking rate of 0.15 LU/Ha for 12-month retention period or 0.26 LU/Ha for a 7-month retention period. Should you fail to meet these stocking requirements, you will not qualify for the ANC. Existing GLAS applicants must notify the GLAS section and look for approval before any change in herd number applicant details. Failure to do this could result in the termination of the scheme. This is very simple to do but is often overlooked and could be a very costly mistake. In some cases, forestry payments to forestry owners were stopped, where the herd number has been transferred to another person without transferring the forestry. Seek advice before changing the herd number where there are forestry payments on the farm. Due to the additional checks to be carried out on new applicants, payments may be delayed if the information required is not fully submitted, such as proof of right to claim land, insufficient stock, bank account details. These delay can put a strain on cash flow on the farm, particularly when all bills need to be paid in the autumn. Finally, have a plan in place for how you are going to source animals and the types and numbers required. Spring and early summer is an expensive time to buy animals. If you are looking to breed these animals, look to source them from herds or flocks with good health status if possible. If you are doing this for the first time, congratulations, you have just

MINISTER HEYDON REMINDS ALL TO BE FARM SAFE We all must welcome the new “Be Summer Ready” campaign. Late Spring and all of Summer season are highly worrying times when it comes to farm accident risk. Higher levels of farm activity ranging from movement and handling of livestock to increased machinery use increase the risk of accident and injury. Martin Heydon, The Minister with Special Responsibility for Farm Safety, launched this new campaign. Everyone should take note. Now is an important time to remind farmers and all those who may visit farms of the need to be aware of all the risks. Tragically every year farming accounts for over 40% of all fatal workplace incidents. It is now time for a change in behaviour, so that the rate of fatal and serious incidents in agriculture is reduced. Farmers and their families should always highlight all of risks on the farm to any visitors, so as to keep them safe. While farms have a lot of risks, they do not have to be dangerous. It is important that farmers take heed of all of the safety advice that is available. In particular, farmers and all those working on or visiting farms should be aware of the “Be Summer Ready” campaign. In particular, farmers should be aware of the “SunSmart” advice. After all, as the majority of a farmers working day is spent outdoors, we need to be mindful in relation to sun safety, particularly during the summer months. Also, In the lead up to silage season, farmers are reminded of the need to ensure that their tractors and machinery are in good working order and have been fully serviced. It's not just about farmers focusing on their physical safety, but also on their health and wellbeing. In these times of Covid restrictions we should be even more mindful of our farmer neighbours who may live and work alone or in isolation. Take the time to pick up the phone to check in on them. All farmers, their families and their enterprises will benefit from improved behaviours around issues of health, safety and wellbeing because farmers must always remember that they are their farm’s greatest asset. Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor SCARBHÍN - HISTORY The Scairbhín (pronounced skara-veen) is an Irish weather phenomenon most definitely, translates as ‘the rough month of the cuckoo’ from the phrase ‘garbh mi na gcuach’ and refers to the period comprising the last two weeks of April, and the first two weeks of May. These few weeks are often rampant with changeable extremes of weather patterns. As we often say, in Ireland you can experience 4 seasons in one day and this is most certainly true for the Scarbhín. Our ancient ancestors who worked the land and were much more in tune with the seasons knew this as ‘the hunger time’ of the year. This is because they were busy planting and tending their crops and they believed that the scarbhin was natures way of ensuring the crops success by the initial ‘unseasonal’ warm weather allowing seeds to germinate, a sudden cold snap would then harden off the young seedlings and the following wind and gales would distribute the pollen and this all coincided with the return of the cuckoo. The bird often heard but seldom seen which adds to its mystique and therefore seen as something of a herald of spring and the milder weather yet to come but not yet arrived. OBITUARY The death of Joseph, Joe Curran, Lisnsallagh, Fermoy and late of Camp Post Office occurred on Wednesday 21st April. Joe passed away peacefully in the exceptional care of the staff at St. Patrick’s Community Hospital Fermoy in his 92nd year. . Joe is fondly remembered growing up in Camp in the family Post Office. Joe worked with An Post for 47 years, after a short time in Longford and Newbridge, Joe was appointed Post Master in Fermoy where he met his wife Mary, raising a family, he settled well into the community of Fermoy where he was very popular and held in high esteem. His son Ken began the tribute to his father at his funeral Mass on Saturday with a beautiful poem penned by Joe's brother Gabriel which truly captured the essense of a man who lived a full and happy life. Joe was a great musician, a fiddle player and he performed to thousands over the years with the Avondhu Ceili Band.

Frances Falvey née O’Callaghan, Main St., Annascaul and formerly of Tullig, Castlegregory passed away peacefully, in the loving care of the staff at West Kerry Community Hospital on 15th April, beloved wife of Denny and dearest mother of Breda, John, Tim & Brendan. A private family funeral took place for Frances with her Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Michael Moynihan was streamed live online on Monday from the Sacred Heart Church, Annascaul. Interment followed in Ballinclár Cemetery, Annascaul. Frances was a dedicated community person, never counting the hours she gave to her community down through the years. In a lovely tribute to his mother at her funeral Mass, John reminisced on the life of his mother, her love of Kerry GAA always displaying the flag outside the pub, and her pride at her own family GAA achievements with Annascaul and Kerry.

He was a keen gardener too and a beekeeper, and among the items brought to the altar were some vegetables from his garden and his own honey.

She was founder of Annascaul Care of The Aged organising many events including weekly card games which were the highlight of the week for many including herself. A lovely lady, Frances will always be remembered with great fondness by her many friends in the parish of Annascaul and beyond.

Pork with Apple and Mustard Sauce and Garlic Potatoes Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School olive oil

2 cloves of garlic, crushed

butter, potatoes and garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes, shaking the pan every now and then. Once they are ready add some parsley, salt and pepper. Turn them off until the pork is ready.

Heat a pan over medium to high heat. Season the pork with salt and pepper. Add a little oil to the pan and then add the pork. Let it brown for about 3 minutes, turn over the pork and add the apple juice. It should come up about half way on the pork chops. Turn the heat down until the juice is simmering. Leave it cook for another 5-6 minutes. Press on the centre of the pork with your finger, if it feels firm they should be done.

Apple and mustard always go well with pork. Everyone is going to love the garlic potatoes, they will be crispy and covered with garlic and butter, it goes so well with the pork but it will work with almost everything you cook or as a side for a barbecue.

Add the potatoes to a pot of boiling salted water. Cook for about 5- 6 minutes. Check with a knife, they should be just under cooked. The knife should feel a little resistance. Strain them and leave them strain while you are starting the pork.

Remove the pork from the pan to allow it to rest. Meanwhile you can make the sauce, add the mustard and cream. Cook for about 2 minutes, taste and adjust the seasoning.

Method

Place a pork chop in the centre of the plate, put some potatoes to the side. Pour some sauce over the pork. Serve with a green salad.

A Dip For Betty On St. Patrick' Day 2020 Betty Ryan passed away after a long battle with blood cancer and a year on from her passing family and friends wanted a way to safely mark her anniversary, especially for those who couldn't be together due to travel restrictions. Never forgetting Betty's love of the outdoors they came up with the idea of a 'Dip For Betty' and everyone who wanted to was asked to go for a dip in the sea on 17th March in her memory. They also set up a Just Giving page to raise money for Kerry Hospice Foundation, whose compassion and care for Betty in her final days is greatly appreciated by her family.

is a community art project, brainchild of Deirdre Nic Ginnea, where she has called on friends of Féile to make their own triangular ﬂags, she has had a phenomenal response and has put together a patchwork of bunting that will adorn public spots throughout the peninsula to remind us of the essence of our community and how connected we really are.

Misneach is an imaginative art trail that showcases Annascaul where we get to squint through street-front windows, and stare at the soul of local artists. It also includes two retrospective collections, of Kate Landers and Monica Phelan, and outdoor sculptures.

Delighted to see Féile na Bealtaine projects popping up around the peninsula. Congratulations to all involved for making it happen. We're delighted to have some of the creative projects we've been involved in, shown on the big screens, which will be located in Holyground, Dingle and in Ventry this weekend 30th April to 2nd May as part of Féile na Bealtaine. We’re also super excited to announce the premiere of an interview we did with the fabulous Ros Hubbard, Hollywood Casting Director, as part of Féile na Bealtaine 2019. Work continues on Strand Street near the old Boatyard site. The full impact of the street widening and associated redevelopments will become visable once the works are completed and two way traffic resumes in this area. Grey's Lane looks great with a new coat of tarmac. Road widening continues on the Conor Pass and Ballinaboula to An Fheothanch Roads all welcome improvements for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike. COVID. Improving vaccination supplies make the end of this long tunnel seem much closer now . But we must all continue to practise the simple guidelines and play our part in finally getting society back to some normality this summer. Good behaviour and a little patience will see us through these trying times as history has shown us down the years.

gmail.com NEWKD are rolling out a “BRAND” New Training Initiative for the Dingle Peninsula / Corca Dhuibhne. “Farmers, fishers, food/drink producers and hospitality providers based on the Dingle Peninsula /Corca Dhuibhne are invited to sign up to an exciting new training programme aimed at providing them with the knowledge and skills to further develop and expand the culinary attributes of the region. ‘Developing a Sustainable Regional Food Branding Strategy’ for the Dingle Peninsula / Corca Dhuibhne starts on May 11th and consists of a series of modules over 2021/2022 which introduce participants to an impressive group of expert trainers and inspirational guest speakers. A blend of presentations, interactive workshops and discussion clinics will cover a variety of topics including using local and regional ingredients, agri best practice and sustainable food tourism, branding, sustainability, marketing and social media. The aim of the programme is to deliver ongoing support for the branding of products from sustainable farming, fishing and food production on the Dingle Peninsula/Corca Dhuibhne. It will bring together artisan, micro, agricultural and small hospitality businesses so that collectively they can define the unique features of food on the peninsula, their historic and current stories and emerging vision. The training will be delivered by The Discovery Partnership on behalf of NEWKD.

The lack of a road map for Tourism and Hospitality continues to frustrate as businesses cannot plan ahead. However, it is hoped that some clarity will be given on April 30th for businesses to get some chance to organise their teams and systems as they prepare to re-open – it is hoped for late May but June seems to be the more likely date at this time. However, if you have not already done so, make sure you have your booking systems in place, ready to open up availability when the time is right and re-opening dates set by Government. Cromane News Jane Casey CROMANE GAA Mini Maroons: Thankfully, our underage players can return to action from Monday, April 26, after the recent government announcement on easing certain COVID-related restrictions. The good news is that our Mini Maroons for 3 to 6-year-olds returns to the Cromane GAA pitch on Sunday, May 2, at 11.15am. New players welcome. Our underage club coaches who need to be garda-vetted should now be completing that process of e-vetting. Search online for ‘GAA vetting’ for more information. The be return-to-play health questionnaires will be necessary once again. It is very important that you update the health questionnaire prior to every training session. This can be done on the ‘Foireann’ site where you register as a club member. Training: As the restrictions ease, our pitch is opening to welcome activity. We hope everyone enjoys the training sessions with our great set of coaches. Don't forget that health questionnaires must be submitted prior to every training session. The following underage teams are back in action this week and for the following weeks: Under-11s (45-minute session) on Tuesdays at 4:45pm. Under-15s on Tuesdays at 6pm. Under17s on Wednesdays at 6pm. Under-13s on Thursdays at 7pm Fundraiser: Unfortunately, the pandemic circumstances have worked against us and we will not be able to host our Cow Splat fundraiser.
