Breaking News: The Easter Bunny has had Enough! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Recent research conducted by the Irish Heart Foundation found that children across the country will eat an average of four eggs over the Easter holidays, with about one in five getting six eggs or more. Just one average-sized Easter egg has about 23 teaspoons of sugar (almost four times a child’s daily recommendation) yet the trend to target children by associating major holidays with junk food, not only distorts the significance of the season, but keeps junk food firmly on the table at every occasion. The Easter Bunny (who is hopping mad) also added “that it is a shame that chocolate has fallen foul of a greedy food industry because there was a time when real chocolate was synonymous with great celebrations, health and happiness”. There is no other food on the planet that has the capacity to nourish the mind, body and spirit quite like real, honest-togoodness chocolate. Native of the tropical rainforests of equatorial South America, Theobroma Cacao, literally means “food of the gods” and has history going back to 1000BC. The Olmec people of what is now Southeast Mexico were the first to hail its virtues but it was the Mayans, over 1200 years later that really put chocolate on the map. Cacao beans from which chocolate is made, were used to make luxurious beverage while also used as currency, such was the value of the beans. Only the very wealthy could afford to consume chocolate in Mayan times and the regular folk would only use cacao beans to trade for goods and services. The average industrial wage of the time was 100 beans per day. Ten beans would get you a rabbit or a tryst with a “lady of the night”, an avocado would set you back three beans and a turkey or feathered cape was a day’s wages. The trade of cacao beans was fierce – bean banks were established, and beans replaced gold as currency during the reign of the last Aztec emperor, Montezuma ll (1502-1520AD). Early on counterfeit beans made out of clay were a problem and phrases such as “not worth a bean” and “bean counters” dates back to these times. The traditional method of preparing cacao beans for drinking was a long, labour-intensive process. It involved harvesting the beans from cacao pods, allowing them to ferment and dry out. They were then roasted and ground to a paste called cacao liquor -which was added to hot water and spices to make the chocolate drink. The cacao liquor can be also separated into cacao butter and cacao powder. Cacao and cocoa powder differ slightly in that the latter is roasted before being ground to a powder whereas cacao powder is ground from raw, dried beans. The roasting of the beans brings out the chocolatey aroma we are more familiar with today. Both powders in their purest forms are highly nutritious – rich in B vitamins, antioxidants, fibre, magnesium and other minerals. The original chocolate drink was used in marriage ceremonies, linking it to romance and used as a remedy for strength and virility, gaining reputation as an aphrodisiac. Amazingly, its ceremonial and medicinal use can now be justified through scientific research, with much of its nutrients truly beneficial to heart and circulatory health. Raw, unprocessed cacao is among the highest rated antioxidant foods known. Multiple antioxidantspolyphenols, catechins, flavanols among others, rank it higher than blueberries and acai berries in the antioxidant charts. The nutrient profile of cocoa powder is similar to cacao, once it is pure and minimally processed. Studies examining its effect on blood pressure showed an increase in nitric oxide production in the cells lining blood vessels, prompting them to dilate and reduce pressure while increasing blood flow. Other studies have demonstrated that it lowers the susceptibility of LDL (bad cholesterol) to oxidative damage while increasing HDL (good cholesterol) thus further protecting cardiovascular health. Rich in fibre and minerals, it can also improve insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. The combination of antioxidants and improved blood flow also aids memory, attention span and problem solving in brain health. Cocoa also contains stimulant substances like caffeine and theobromine, which may be a key reason cocoa can improve brain function in the short term. 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
Following the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs in the 1600s, chocolate made its debut in Europe. The Industrial Revolution paved the way for the chocolate we eat today. Steam engines reduced the time and labour needed for grinding cacao beans and also new machinery enabled more cacao butter to be extracted from the liquor, which was later replaced with cheaper oils such as palm oil and vegetable oils. The cheap version of modern chocolate is far removed from where it all began in terms of taste, health and ceremony. The addition of refined sugar, hydrogenated oils, milk solids, emulsifiers and chemical flavourings now offset any health benefit of the original ingredient. Most of the 18 million chocolate Easter eggs sold in Ireland this year will hardly be fit for the gods, not to mind what they will do to our youngsters. We, the grown-ups can support the Easter bunny by choosing quality over quantity this year. This is an opportunity to support the wonderful artisan chocolatiers, the smaller businesses that promote a more sustainable, ethical way to celebrate the holiday. Seek out the quality dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids – the more non-fat cocoa solids, the better for our health. Without being the killjoy, we all can rediscover the real joy of chocolate by experiencing the real thing and ultimately making the Easter bunny a very happy bunny indeed! Dingle Notes Richie Williams COUNTY CLEAN UP. Twenty volunteers helped collect a total of 37 full bags of litter from the approach roads to town during the recent KWD County Clean Up effort. Almost 100 large glass bottles ( mainly vodka, wine and whiskey) were also recycled on the day which shows the lack of respect some people have for the environment. The Tidy Towns Committee wish to say a big Míle Buíiochas to all who helped clean up the mess left by others along the roadsides over the past few months. SPEED LIMITS. To my amazement most of the people I asked have not noticed the change in speed limits on the approach roads to town over the past month. Just another reminder that all drivers should be more vigilant and not take things for granted as dangers appear when least expected on our roads.

AINTREE. Our own Jack Kennedy featured prominently in the 2022 Aintree Grand National finishing in a very creditable third place on his favourite horse Delta Work from the Gordon Elliott Stable. In fact those Dinner who follow the racing scene will note that Jack has been consistantly in Dinner the prize money over the winter months despite hot competition from other in form jockeys and stables. Well done to all the Irish trainers, Dinner horses and jockeys who enjoyed great success in Aintree once again this year. CBS REUNION. All the boys who entered first year in the CBS BOYS Secondary School in Dingle on September 1967 are being invited to a reunion in Benner's Hotel Dingle on Saturday August 13th next. The get together is open to all who started on that date as some left the school at various stages before sitting the Leaving Cert in June 1972. Sean Ó Cathain from Kilmhicadownaig is the main contact person from the organising group for what promises to be a good evening of nostalgia and untold memories and stories. PHOENIX CINEMA. The Save The Phoenix Campaign has taken off with a flourish and with great interest from a wide range of local and national personnel involved in the effort to either lease, rent or purchase the property. A new website will be launched later this week and we will endeavour to keep our readers up to date with developments in future editions. The property has great potential to cater for the many arts related activities which do not have a set home here in Dingle.

Farming News Louis Murchan TILLAGE INCENTIVE SCHEME – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW The Tillage Incentive Scheme (TIS) will encourage farmers to sow additional tillage crops in 2022 on land that was in grass last year. In order to apply, farmers must declare all the crops planted on their 2022 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) online applications. Eligibility for the TIS will be determined by comparing a person’s BPS applications in 2021 and 2022. The Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM) will write to eligible farmers in June this year, inviting them to apply for the TIS. Eligibility for the scheme will be based on two criteria: an increase in the tillage area in 2022; and the area taken out of grass this year relative to 2021. It is this specific grassland area that will be payable under this scheme. In other words, there must an overall increase in tillage crop area declared by the applicant, as well as grassland converted to growing an eligible crop. Farmers must have submitted a valid 2021 BPS application and must also submit a valid 2022 BPS application to be considered eligible for the TIS. Farmers, who have already submitted their BPS application for this year, but who want to take on additional land, can now go back online and amend their submission. But this must be done before the deadline of May 16, 2022 There must be an increase in the total area declared of barley, wheat, oats, rye, oilseed rape, maize, and beet on the 2022 BPS application in comparison with the 2021 BPS area. For example, 20 hectares of eligible crops declared in 2021 and 30 hectares of eligible crops declared in 2022 results in a 10-hectare increase. The increased area eligible for payment is determined by the area of grassland parcels converted to eligible crops. Consider the above 10-hectare increase example: if that increase is due to conversion of 10 hectares of grassland parcels, then the full 10-hectare increase will be deemed eligible for payment. However, if the 10-hectare increase is due to rent, lease or purchase of tillage parcels – as declared on 2021 BPS – then the increased area will not be eligible for payment. If, let’s say, four hectares of the 10-hectare increase are due to conversion of grassland to eligible crops, and six hectares are from the acquisition of a 2021 BPS tillage parcel, then only four hectares of the increased area in 2022 will be deemed eligible. The crops considered as grassland in 2021 include: alfalfa, clover, fallow, grass (year 1-5), grassmeal, hemp, lucerne, miscanthus sinensis, permanent pasture, potatoes, red clover and willow. Eligible TIS crops include: oats – spring; oats – winter; wheat – winter; wheat –spring; rye, barley – winter; barley – spring; oilseed rape – winter; oilseed rape – spring; maize; fodder; and sugar beet. Mixed crops such as arable silage, mixed cropping, etc. are not allowed. The same holds true for combi crops. These are defined as a mix of peas or beans with a cereal. They are not eligible for TIS. However, they are eligible for €150/ha payment as a protein crop. Beans, peas, lupins or a mix of protein and a cereal crop are not eligible for the TIS. But they are eligible for support as protein crops. Crops may be undersown with grass. But the eligible tillage crop must be sown and maintained to a commercial standard in terms of plant stand and weed control, etc. In the case of spring barley, for example, a plant count of 300-350 per square metre must be established. Significantly, the eligible crop can either be harvested or whole-cropped and ensiled. It can also be sold on or used for on-farm feed purposes. The proposed payment rate is €400 per hectare, which reflects a contribution towards the increase in the cost of growing tillage crops in 2022 on land that was in grassland in 2021. Other points relating to TIS include the fact that there will be no relaxation on nitrates regulations: existing regulations must be followed. Tillage lands situated in designated areas are eligible for Areas of Natural Constraint payment in 2022. And, finally, GLAS requirements remain in place and must be adhered to in order to avoid penalties and possible payment clawbacks. ACTIVE FARMERS ONLY – Under the DAFM’s CSP (CAP Strategic Plan), active farmers are “those engaged in at least a minimum level of agricultural activity”. As per the next CAP, it has proposed a new holding level check. Its purpose is to ensure the applicant carries out the activity and takes the agricultural and economic “risks and rewards”. As it stands, a check exists in the form of reviewing land, in particular, that may be involved in non-farming activities, such as recreation. Given this, in 2023, its implementation will “be different”, as 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
detailed below. So, what does it mean for livestock, non-livestock, and tillage farmers? In the case of Livestock farmers, the following will apply: • Stocking rate check: > 0.10 LU/Ha (ANC); • The DAFM confirmed that the lower stocking rate may be acceptable as the threshold. For example, the holding may have commonage land, and the recommended stocking rate would be lower; • The DAFM will utilise previous years’ data in the first instance. In 2023, farmers will be assessed based on the livestock they held in 2022. The DAFM’s Thomas Harty explained: “The purpose of that is to make sure that farmers know where they stand at the beginning of the year. If farmers cannot meet that based on 2022, for example, a new entrant, they can choose to be assessed on 2023. In these situations, it may lead to a slightly delayed payment as we have to run the stocking rate check across the full twelve months. Non-livestock grassland (farmers who make fodder/hay/silage only) will have to provide Evidence of Maintenance (receipts from sales of hay/ silage), while…. Tillage farmers will undergo Administrative Checks (and will have to keep and provide receipts, share farming agreement, etc). According to DAFM, the minimum stocking rate outlined as 0.15 Livestock Units per hectare (LU/ha) has now been set at 0.10 LU/ha. The new proposed minimum stocking rate of 0.10 LU/ha maintains the link with 1 ewe per hectare (1 ewe = 0.10 LU) in the current CAP. DAFM plans to write to farmers in mid-2022 (likely around June) based on information that it currently holds from 2021, which is not deemed active. DAFM explained that this would allow farmers to adjust their farming practice or gather the required paperwork to prove that they are an active farmer, as set out above. When you get to log into the system in February or March 2023, it will say: ‘based on 2022, you are an active farmer’. The system will pull up the required information. If you do not meet it, it will ask you on what basis you propose. That may be livestock in 2023 or hay or silage. It is very important to say that the active farmer check is fundamental. If you do not meet the active farmer check, no payments can be made under any scheme. It is important for farmers to be aware of. For the vast majority, it is no issue, they would be well above the threshold. However, for some, they need to consider the type of farming they engage in. They can assess what the best structure going forward is and what changes they might need to make. SUPPORTS FOR YOUNG FARMERS IN THE NEXT CAP The Complementary Income Support for Young Farmers (CIS-YF) is the Young Farmer Scheme’s successor in the next Common Agricultural Policy. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is dedicating 3% of the direct payments’ ceiling, approximately €35 million per annum, to this particular measure to support generational renewal. It stated that attracting young farmers into the sector will help address the issue of an ageing farming population. According to the DAFM’s draft plan, this will provide support to “appropriately qualified” young farmers entering the agriculture sector in the years immediately following the young farmer setting up as head of the holding, solely or jointly. It stated that it would also provide certainty regarding the level of income support for eligible applicants for up to five years. It is proposed that Ireland will define a young farmer as aged no more than 40 years of age at any time during the calendar year in which s/he, (i) first submits an application under Pillar I measures or (ii) submits an application under Pillar II measures, for young farmer support. According to the DAFM’s plan, eligible beneficiaries will be any farmers meeting the following conditions: • Is setting up a holding as head of the holding, solely or jointly, for the first time or has set up such a holding during the five years preceding the first submission of an application under CIS-YF; • Has successfully completed a recognised course of education in agriculture, giving rise to an award at level 6 or equivalent on the National Framework of Qualifications; • Entitled to payment under the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS); • Aged more than 40 years of age at any time during the calendar year in which s/he first submits an application under CIS-YF.
During a recent public information meeting on the Common Agricultural Policy draft Strategic Plan 2023, 2027, the DAFM confirmed that the scheme is no longer based on payment entitlements but on eligible hectares to a maximum of 50. DAFM predict a Young Farmer Payment of somewhere between €170-€180 per eligible hectare declared by the young farmer. This is a substantial increase on the current €68 per activated entitlement, which would be the case this year. Young farmers who are currently in the Young Farmers’ Scheme, for example, have only completed one or two years of the five-year support period for this measure, will continue seamlessly onwards into the next CAP. Coupled with that, the DAFM also has a National Reserve, which is now a mandatory measure in the next CAP but is voluntary at present. DAFM also confirms that it will hold a National Reserve for all years of the next CAP. This will allocate payment entitlements at a national average value to young farmers and new farmers. “A New Farmer” is someone who is a new entrant to farming who is not a young farmer, essentially, they are older than forty years of age.

Dingle Peninsula on Prime Time We were happy to host RTÉ’s Prime Time team on a recent visit to Corca Dhuibhne. They wanted to see initiatives and projects happening across our beautiful peninsula that are paving the way for our transition to a lowcarbon society - and how other parts of Ireland can follow in our footsteps. The filming team talked to our General Manager, Deirde de Bhailís to see how the Hub is spearheading these initiatives before paying a visit to our friends in Spillane’s bar in the Maharees. They retrofitted their premises with help from ESB Networks Dingle Project and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. They also spent time in the Maharees tombolo with Martha Farrell of the Maharees Conservation Association, to see their Nature-based Solutions, like planting marram grass and erecting chestnut fencing to protect the sand dunes that are such an important defence against storms and rising sea levels. Message from Fr Michael Moynihan PP Dingle and Moderator of Annascaul Parish Watching the News these days there is little reason for hope. War in Ukraine is continuing with devastating effect for the thousands that have died and millions that have been forced from their homes. This coupled with the sanctions from the international community and the knock-on increase in the cost of living makes for bleak news. Some things that we have taken for granted are now becoming less certain. We search for meaning. Here our faith can help. A faith that can give meaning, values and direction to our lives. Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week are known as the Easter Tridium. We celebrate the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, death and Resurrection of Our Lord. These events are central to our faith. It is great to be able to gather in the Church once again to celebrate together the Easter Ceremonies with the faith community. The ideal way to spend Holy Week is to fly to Israel.
Since we will not be able to do that, our parish church is the Holy Land. On Holy Thursday, our sanctuary becomes the Upper Room. Its altar becomes the long narrow table where Jesus sat, where He whispers, "This is my body" and "This is my blood," On Holy Thursday late, the church becomes the Garden of Gethsemane. There the Nazarene undergoes the dark night of the soul. Before Him is a cruel death. Our thoughts are those of Joseph Mary Plunkett, executed in the 1916 Irish rebellion: "I see His blood upon the rose and in the stars the glory of His eyes. His body gleams amid eternal snows. His tears fall from the skies." Good Friday is a day that will live in infamy. We shall gather into our church for services. The aisle becomes Jerusalem's Via Dolorosa. We will follow Christ in the Stations of the Cross. We dwell on the words: "I danced on Friday when the sky turned black. It's hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I'd gone."
On Holy Saturday, we come mourning to church but full of hope. Emerging from the church we will shout the words of Gerard Manly Hopkins: "Let Him Easter in us. Be a dayspring to the dimness in us." Hopkins tells us because of Christ's empty tomb our hope in the resurrection is a reality. A word of thanks to all those who through their Dues Envelopes contributions support the priests income. Advisory Notice from Kerry County Council Traffic Management Trial on Slea Head Drive, Wild Atlantic Way from Tuesday 19th April to Friday 22nd April From Tuesday 19th April to Friday 22nd April, Kerry County Council kindly asks that visitors to the Slea Head Drive, Wild Atlantic Way, to drive in a clockwise direction starting at Dingle Town, then on to Ventry, Slea Head, Coumeenole, Dunquin, Ballyferriter, Murioch, Feohanagh and back to Dingle Town. In addition, a Kerry County Council employee will be positioned (each day from 11.00 am to 4.00pm) at Coumeenole to encourage Camper Vans and larger vehicles that are driving in the incorrect direction to re-join the correct route. Local access will be maintained as normal. Additional signage will be installed at the Main Carparks in Dingle Town, Conor Pass Viewing points, Milltown Bridge, Ard a Bothair and Ballyferriter. From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon In this issue the focus is on the Medical Professionals living and working in West Kerry as recorded in the 1901 Census which was taken on Sunday, 31 March. GURTEEN (Ballynacourty)
established a hospital on the site. William Dagg William Dagg, 35, lived in Upper Main Street with his wife Frances, 32, and a nephew named George Ronaldson, 11. William was born in Tipperary and his occupation was recorded as ‘Veterinary Surgeon’. He had a practice in Ballinasloe, County Galway, before moving to Dingle. His wife was born in Wicklow and her maiden name was Frances Ronaldson. On the census form her occupation was recorded as ‘Lady’. Gerald Maguire
William Kane, 30, a single man and head of the household, was recorded as ‘Surgeon and Physician’. Also living in the house were his three brothers and two sisters. The only one of them to register an occupation was his brother John, 23, a ‘Draper’. They had a 20 year-old servant whose name was recorded as ‘Gilbert Mary’?
Gerald Maguire, 35, lived in Quay Street in 1901 and his occupation was ‘Chemist’, the only one discovered in the West Kerry census. He was recorded as ‘Head of Family’ but he was a single man and there were no other family members recorded in his home on census night. A domestic servant named Nora Field, 30 and single, was also recorded on the census form.

Timothy Teahan, 36, was based in Castlegregory and his profession was ‘Surgeon and Physician’. He had qualified from the Royal College of Surgeons. He was born in Killorglin in 1865. His wife Hannah, 29, was also a native of Killorglin.
James Chute, 41 and single, lived in Knockglass and was recorded as ‘Doctor of Medicine’. He shared the house with his widowed mother Isabella, 75; his brother Edward ‘Solicitor’; his brother Thomas ‘Farmer’ and his sister Margaret, all single. There were also three servants in the house.
They had five children. The two older ones were born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. The next two were born in Killorglin and the youngest was born in Castlegregory. Timothy, whose father was a native of Sheffield, died in 1911 aged 46. DINGLE There was only one house in Farrannakilla at the time of the Census in 1901. It was occupied by the Miles family. John Miles, 54, was the head of the household and his occupation was ‘Surgeon Physician’. He had trained in Edinburgh.

He was the Medical Officer for the Workhouse, the Coastguard and the Constabulary as well as being a general practitioner. He wrote an article for the British Medical Journal and an article of his can be found in the United States Library of the Surgeon General’s Office. His son George, 25, was also a ‘Surgeon Physician’ according to the Census. George’s wife, Ethel, 22, was born in Ottawa, Canada. In October 1895 George was on a sailing trip with two young local fishermen, Patrick Brosnan and Patrick Egan when their yacht was struck by a squall and capsized in Dingle harbour. Their plight was seen from the shore and two boats raced to their rescue. John Miles died on 15 May, 1912 and is buried in Raheenyhooig cemetery along with his son Thomas who is not listed in the Census records. (John Miles was born in Kerry during the Great Famine. At that time there were three doctors in Dingle: Robert Hickson, M.D. and Surgeon on Main Street; George Williams, M.D. and Surgeon also on Main Street and Robert Hussey, Physician in Lough.) Robert Hudson, 58, lived with his family in Bridge House, Holyground. He was a ‘Physician & Surgeon’ and had dispensaries in Ventry and Murreigh, according to family records. Those records also state that he attended to the medical needs of the Blasket islanders and that he was once stranded for a week on the Great Blasket during bad weather. Hudson’s Bridge is named after the family, according to local information. He and his wife Maria had four sons and two daughters. The family moved from Dingle to the Hudson family home at Gortmore House in Tralee in 1906. Four years after Robert’s death, on 18 February 1917, Maria moved to Dublin. Gortmore House was left to the Bons Secours Order who

Rás an Struicín Carl O'Flaherty An Struicín (Little Peak), sits to the north west in the parish of Lispole. Cone-like in shape it rises to a height of 2001ft. It yields in altitude to its adjoining sister, An Cnapán Mór (2134’) but still holds pride of place. A necklace of villages cling to its base; Lisdorgan, Gualainn, Boherbrack and Gowlane. Sheep farming and dairying, although dramatically reduced in recent times, is still to the fore. More than sixty years have elapsed since a group of exile parishioners in Dublin, (Patrick Kavanagh, James Kavanagh, Johnny Hanifin and Timmy Joe O’Sullivan) thought of a roguish plan. Yes, the devil finds work for the idle minded in the city. They proposed a race to the summit and would present a perpetual cup. The forthcoming event with a proviso that American papers should copy was announced at Keane’s dance hall. The news spread like wildfire. The novelty event attracted keen local interest, from the assembled crowd awaiting Sunday Mass, to the farmers discharging their milk at the creamery. During the following weeks, there was no shortage of prospective challengers traipsing the slopes of the mountain. At last, the fateful day arrived on the first Sunday of August 1960. A carnival atmosphere prevailed as the participants and spectators mingled on the mountain-side above the village of Lisdorgan. Gerald Manning, then a garsún of tender years recalls the unique day “There was pleasant banter among the crowd, with each village proclaiming the virtues of their own heroes. More importantly for the many youngsters present, local shopkeeper, Thomas Keane didn’t let the opportunity slip by. He parked his van at the first gate and provided a large selection of sweets, buns, minerals and ice creams. Oh my Lord, it was every boys dream to be licking a choc-ice on the slopes of An Struicín”. Athletes of the modern era regard diet, hydration, hi-tech running shoes, shorts and singlets as common practice. Sixty odd years ago, all the competitors wore either nail boots or wellingtons and working clothes. The bottom of the trousers was tucked inside their socks, while some enterprising lads used bicycle clips. All carried a blackthorn stick, deemed essential on the hill, and some resorted to bringing along a sheepdog. It wasn’t a running race within the conventional sense but a challenge to reach the summit at a quick pace. When Thomas a’Mhuileann Kennedy (An Rinn Bhuidhe) arrived at Lisdorgan, he had no intention of partaking. An Stricín held no novelty for him. He often joined his father, Tadhg a’Mhuileann tending their modest sized flock on its wild terrain. He ambled through the assembled crowd and shared greetings and tidings with neighbours and friends. There was a palpable feeling of excitement. Then, without warning Johnny ‘Tommy’ Griffin (Baile na hAbha), placed a blackthorn stick into Thomas’ hand and muttered “Jeepers Boy, never let it be said that a Kennedy was too scared to climb his own mountain!” The die was cast and Thomas joined the other lads at the starting line. 20 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Soon they set off with Thomas ‘The Champion’ Griffin to the fore like a March hare. Because of the novelty of the occasion, they abandoned the usual cautious assent and took off with abandon. This transpired to be a serious miscalculation. After conquering the initial stage, many fell by the wayside. A youthful Michael Dorgan remembers the scene. He had purchased a light sized scooter motor cycle (NSU, quickly TT) the previous week. It cost a sizeable amount of twenty-five pounds which he gathered from growing onions. He sped up the hillside like a bat out of hell. As he came to the end of An Bothar Glas, which marked the beginning of the steep mountain stage he dismounted. His vision was obscured by the heavy mist and most of the participants decided that it was wiser not to continue. One of the lads remarked “You would want to be stone-mad to go any higher!” Kennedy, with the advantage of local knowledge avoided the direct route. Alternatively, he veered west, and after gaining height he changed tack at the shoulder and readjusted. The thick mist had rendered his visibility to nought. Fortunately, he knew the lie of the land and thrust towards the finishing line. A fit youth of eighteen years of age, he tested his football training with Lispole CLG to the limits. He recalls the pangs of pain and exhaustion during the remaining yards. He could make out the shadow of another athlete in the vicinity, as he made a final burst for the line. He immediately fell to his knees in relief and exhaustion. The mystery shadow was Paudie Garvey (Lisdorgan). With impaired vision, the judges, Thomas Kavanagh and Thomas Hanifin grabbed the immediate athlete next to them. Both Paudie and Thomas were declared joint winners. Sportingly, both lads shook hands and accepted the judgement without question. After a lapse of a lifetime, Thomas recalls “We both sat down side by side on a rock. We were knackered, out of breath, drenched in mist and sweat and delighted to share the honour”. They were soon joined by the third athlete, Gerald ’Bob’ Fitzgerald. Thankfully, all three are still hail and hearty.
Gerald recalls the occasion with clarity and joy. “It was a really foggy day. I was in the company of Batty Moriarty, Tommy Connor, Paddy Sheehy, Liam Bowler and Denny Joe Griffin. Beyond the halfway stage Tommy Connor and myself made a spurt and left the others behind. Paudie Garvey was about ten yards ahead when disaster struck. Tommy, lost his footing, stumbled and fell. Immediately, I stopped and assisted him to his feet. Fortunately, he only grazed his shoulder. After a brief con-flab he urged me to continue. I was hesitant to leave but he assured me that he was grand. I mustered my strength and struck out like a mountain goat. Soon, I reached the summit but was a minute or so behind Thomas and Paudie. God only knows how close I would have been without the delay. I never regretted attending my friend but have no doubt that the lads would have done the same. It was all good craic and the three of us enjoyed the moment. God boy, t’was a great day and even a better night at Garraí” Later that evening, Keane’s dancehall was full to the rafters when the trophy was presented. Denny Joe Griffin’s accordion band rose to the occasion agus bhí óiche go maidin ag gach duine. Thomas a’Mhuileann held the prize for six months before handing it over. In a twist of fate, the trophy remained with the Garvey family for thirty nine years and six months, as the original plan for an annual race fell through until its revival in 2010. Sin stair. Since the new millennium the event has gone from neart go neart. It should be noted that the late Liam Bowler (Ballingrane) was the only participant in both 1960 and 2010. There is a Céad Míle Fáilte for all contestants, men, women, seanóirí agus leanaí. Some come to compete but the majority partake for the craic. I first attended in 2019. It was a memorable occasion. The route was clearly marked and the whole event was well marshalled and organised. Colm Hanifin had guided an ecofriendly meitheal of youngsters to mark out the flight-path go dtí srón an chnoic with recycled
10:10:20 fertiliser bags. Unfortunately, the sun was also on holiday and a blanket of grey cloud hung menacingly on the shoulders of the hill. To complete the scene, a rainbow cast a smile towards Puckisland. Without much ado they headed off towards a tunnel of cloud gan buairt or concern. A nice crowd mostly armed with umbrellas awaited their return. Local ladies Mary Curran and Theresa Rafter Moriarty shared some local knowledge and lore and we were soon alerted to matters arising on the hill. News had filtered through that the honour of Rí an Stricín had again fallen to Ronán Griffin, a remarkable young man from Lisdorgan. I was gobsmacked to learn that Rónán had just secured his fifth title. He is also an accomplished fear caide with the Lios Póil Gaelic football team. Neart inár ngéag bhí an beart déanta aige arís gan aon stró, comhghairdeas a bhuachaill. Later, I wondered if Rónán would manage to gain an elusive sixth title, just like ‘The Dubs’ and attain local immortality. But the pathway of life is never clear or straight forward. Soon afterwards he departed for New Zealand in pursuit of work and adventure but hoped to return and defend his title. We wished him well, go néirí an bóthar leat, beatha agus sláinte. Within six months, the whole world was in turmoil as the Corona Virus stalked the land and sadly, Rónán was unable to return to his native sod. Sin é an saol agus níl aon leigheas againn air. The upcoming Féile programme was restricted to outdoor events, while adhering to strict covid regulations. In the circumstances, I deemed it unwise to travel to Kerry. On the evening of the race I listened attentively to An Nuacht Áitiúil on Radio na Gaeltachta. Remarkably, the new kid on the block was a sprightly youth of twelve years of age named Tiarnan Lynch. He lives within a scread asail in the neighbouring parish of Garfinny. His track record in the race bears testimony to his natural ability. He was placed fifth on his debut year at the age of ten. I departed from Dublin at cock-crow and arrived in Lisdorgan with little time to spare. I was full of misguided vigour and buailim sciath. Wisely, I confined myself to the non-serious category. of a break from this eternal cloud I wondered. My cunning plan was to steal a march on the limbering athletes. The ground staff were busy as I registered with Maria Hanifin Griffin and Myra Evans. I was accorded number forty six. Thomas Evans adjusted the starting tape and Robert Brosnan ensured all was in order. Race starter Richárd McEoin assumed his position and cast an inquiring glance in my direction. Quietly, I set off into the unknown about fifteen minutes before the official gong and hoped to gain a good vantage point. The first section consists of two green fields, (An Bóthar Glas), which rise menacingly and extend for a couple of hundred yards or so. They are both lush and inviting but conceal the torment which awaits. After passing through a geata beag the hill invites you to its rough and unyielding terrain. I then realised that the lads from yesteryear with the aid of their blackthorn sticks had a distinct advantage over me. This townie boy was well out of his depth with not a coffee shop in sight to offer comfort! After I pass the halfway stage, I grasp for breath and cast a backwards glance. Almost unnoticed the leading runner nonchalantly skips by. I watch in awe. He is closely pursued by a bounding youth (Tiarnan) who hardly touches the ground. He reminds me of a mountain hare as he glides across the heather and is soon lost in the cloud. I begin to huff and puff. My lungs are sending distress signals to my brain. There is no escape from the steep gradient as I gasp for air. I execute Plan B and zigzag through the raithneach in the hope of slight relief. Soon, I succumb to the comfort of an inviting rock to recharge my batteries. I inhale the invigorating mountain air and salute the oncoming athletes. Rain, fog, mist, who gives a damn, this is where I want to be! Oh sneachta ! Here comes Paudie Hanifin from the seanóirí category. He salutes me with a knowing smile as I decode his secret weapon. He has decommissioned an old pair of wellies, paired down to size, just above the ankles resembling two u-boats. A leithéad do chleasaíocht, níor chaill muintir Lios Deargáin riamh é. Meanwhile, Gerald Manning, yes, the same lad of long ago is on duty at the summit. Now living in Galway, he lends a helping hand. He is joined by his son Feargal and Martin Durkin, a Mayo exile in Dublin with local links. His son Cian claimed the title on two occasions. They diligently record the
official placings and times. They are aided and abetted by Pat Duffy and ensure the athletes safety and needs. The crown, Rí an Struicín has been claimed by Conor O’Mahony, a first time participant. He is a worthy winner in wet and slippy conditions. He clocks in with a time of 16 minutes and 30 seconds, a new course record and has more than a minute to spare over Tiarnan (Now a member of Farranfore AC). Conor is a native of Ballymacelligot and represents An Ríocht AC. He enjoys competing in both road racing and cross country. He represented Ireland in 2019 in the International Snowdon Mountain race. He is full of praise and encouragement for his young rival. The ladies winner is Morgan Brophy, a native of Australia. Now living and working in Dingle she enjoys the ruggedness of Corca Dhuibhne and its people. The ladies event also began in 2010. Joanne Ní Shúilleabháin (Baile an Ághasaigh) was crowned the first Banríon and has completed a hat-trick of titles. Muiríosa Ní Ghrifín holds the ladies fastest time at 21 minutes and 45 seconds, recorded in 2019. There was one more chore to be completed before returning to base camp at Lisdorgan. All assembled stand silent and tinged with sadness as a memorial plaque is placed on the summit in memory of James Harrison. Months previously the seventeen year old youth lost his life in a tragic accident at Bull Head in the townland of Kinard. Solás na sioraí ar a anam dílis. Like the Grand Old Duke of York, we trudge back down again. Soon the trophies are presented. The mist is heavy, but doesn’t quench the joy of all the athletes and supporters. They mingle and congratulate each other and promise to renew the challenge. As far as my own time is concerned, shall we say “Tá an clog fós ag rith”, but I’m already planning my strategy for 2022 and much wiser for the experience. Perhaps I’ll bring my stick, our dog Sailor and amble at my leisure. Beidh mé ann le cúnamh Dé. And so concludes another chapter in the social history of this famous parish. The weather wasn’t thar moladh beirte but couldn’t dampen the spirit of the crowd. There is nothing to rival a village event where the heart of the Gael beats loud and free.

Lamb Kleftiko with Mint Yogurt By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School careful not to let it burn. Remove the lamb, turn down the heat and add a little oil. Add the sliced onions, the rest of the garlic, oregano and rosemary. Let this all soften for a few minutes. Add the remaining lemon juice, zest and wine. Cook for a few minutes. Place the lamb on top. Let this cook like this for about 3 hours. Check after each hour to make sure there is some liquid around the lamb, if not top it up with a little wine. For the last 30 minutes of cooking, you can remove the lid. This will add some more colour to the dish. At this stage the lamb should be falling apart. This recipe is perfect if you are looking for something a little different from your roast lamb this Easter. Your beautiful fragrance of oregano, rosemary and lemons will leave your kitchen pleasantly smelling like a Mediterranean kitchen. Cooking this slowing with a little wine will leave the lamb very tender and falling apart. Enjoy this with some spinach, carrot and roast potatoes. I have added a little mint yogurt to drizzle over it to add another layer of freshness.
Before serving, mix some sea salt, chopped parsley and zest of a lemon, spread this over the top. For the mint yogurt, mix the mint leaves with the yogurt. Bain taitneamh as!!

Templenoe had suffered two early defeats in this competition by narrow margins to Na Gaeil and Listowel Emmets but were bolstered by the return of two of their Kerry Senior Footballers in Killian Spillane and Gavin Crowley for last weekend's clash. Milltown/Castlemaine on the other hand were coming into the tie on the back of two victories over Listowel Emmets and Annascaul respectively. The hosts made a rip-roaring start as they raced into a seven point lead after 10 minutes following goals from Stephen O'Sullivan and Daniel Crowley. Milltown/ Castlemaine started slowly but gradually dragged themselves back into the contest with Cathal Moriarty's personal haul of 1-2 including a sublime goal and Eanna O'Connor with 0-4 in the first half leaving just four points between the sides at the half time interval with Templenoe leading 2-8 to 1-7. During this time, the existing police force organised by the Royal Irish Constabulary (R.I.C) diminished in authority. The preservation of law and order was overseen by the Republican Courts and the Irish Civic Guard, which was renamed and reformed as An Garda Síochána. A snap shot of the work and events of the police at Dingle Barracks is illustrated against the political social and legal upheaval within an emerging new Irish Free State up to World War Two and beyond. Glimpses of the organisational and administrative structures and individual post holders within the service are explored through this narrative. Between, 1919-1923, Ireland was described as lacking in law and order, because of The War of Independence and the Civil War. Dingle town was no different to the rest of Ireland and stood at a standstill, isolated with disrupted road and railway links. Fishing, farming and commercial enterprises were in disarray. In trying to bring law and order and in defiance of the still existing R.I.C presence, Sinn Féin, formed a short lived Irish Republican police force (IRPF). Sinn Féin held court where the IRPF prosecuted wrong doers and sentences and fines were handed down. The court was based at the Carnegie Library on Green Street, Dingle. By 1923, the town of Dingle and the West Kerry hinterland began a gradual recovery from the chaos and brutality of successive civil unrest. In 1923, the Provisional Government of Ireland formed the Civic Guard force later, renamed as An Garda Síochána in August of the same year. Early Civic Guards were recruited from Irish Republican army activists, British Army regiments and the R.I.C and were designated as an unarmed force. February 1923, saw the deployment of the first contingent of this newly formed Civic Guard to Dingle, Co Kerry.
approaches were taken to develop both the organisational structures and training for members of the force. An example is seen where the early Civic Guard leadership sought to extend the capabilities of members and in turn enhance the effectiveness of policing. The Civic Guard was subsumed into An Garda Síochána. Structures were developed in parallel to the previous RIC organisation. This reorganisation saw the officer in charge designated as a superintendent of the Dingle district. Fifteen superintendents and nine sergeants served at the Dingle Barracks between 1923-1970. Superintendent Joseph Murray (1893-1975) was the first Garda superintendent appointed to Dingle. He was a hardened veteran of the War of Independence serving at brigadier rank and was an active member of the Gaelic League. He was a native of Monaghan and a qualified national teacher, and had originally enlisted with the rank of inspector in the Civic Guard in 1922. He served in Dingle as a superintendent from March 1923 until February 1924. During Supt. Murray’s, time in Dingle he organised many community activities including Gaelic football/ hurling leagues and Irish language classes. Initially, Supt. Murray faced many problems, including accommodation for a superintendent, three sergeants and five regular Gardaí. Temporary premises became available in 1923, at 1 Greys Lane, at the former R.I.C. residence, which was not in a very habitable state with poor heating and sanitation. The Gardaí operated from this location for three years. Supt. Murray was replaced by Supt. James. O’Gara. Eventually, in 1926, Garda operations were relocated to Bridge Street, under the command of Supt. Charles B. Heron a native of Co. Armagh, in premises leased from Mr John O Donnell. This remained as the headquarters of Dingle An Garda Síochána until 1941. Irish Government policy led to initiatives aimed at restoring law and order to West Kerry. These were further progressed through
Superintendent Joseph Murray (Donegal County Archive). the appointment of Minister for Justice Kevin O’Higgins in 1923. The organisation of an efficient court service in the district was overseen and led by the appointment of District Court Justice Mr Richard Daniel F. Johnson (1896 – 1975). Johnson was a native of Rathkeale, Co, Limerick, a fluent Gaelic speaker who served on the Kerry bench for 42 years. Con Houlihan, Irish Press columnist in an obituary commented ‘we have lost someone [Johnson] who was always his own man’. However, the remnants of military conflict were still evident across the Dingle Peninsula.
The newly constituted An Garda Síochána sought to strengthen Garda presence and organisation of law and order throughout the Dingle peninsula. Early Garda Síochána attempts to commandeer the RIC and British Army barracks throughout Ireland saw Anti Treaty Forces disrupting their best efforts with the arson and demolition of many state buildings. In 1922, the Dingle R.IC. Barracks was destroyed and lay in ruins. Garda personnel were viewed with suspicion by a largely anti treaty population of the Dingle peninsula. Nevertheless, between 1925 and 1928 attention was paid to restoring or building new Garda Barracks at Annascaul, Ballyferriter, Cloghane, Camp and Castlegregory. Yet, Dingle still languished without a purpose built barracks. Outside of Dublin Headquarters, there was little structured chain of command relating to the authority of the rural Civic Guard. A munitions dump was discovered at Camp, and consisted of guns, ammunition, fuses and grenades. Further sporadic incidents continued to occur across the Dingle jurisdiction without loss of life. These included an armed attack on the Ballyferriter Garda station, in 1924. In 1928, a robbery took place at Ventry Post Office and pension money to the value of 40 pounds was taken. In the same year a break in took place at the Provincial Bank Main Street Dingle. In 1931, 50 rounds of 0.45 ammunition was discovered in a wall at the old coalyard of Mr. P. Devane, merchant, Green Street Dingle. This cache was found during building renovations. This scene was the location of an earlier Irish Republican Army attack on a Black and Tan patrol in 1920. Throughout the 1920’s, Gardaí investigated compensation claims by businesses and individuals. They were seeking restitution and loss of earnings for damages to dwellings business premises, farm stock and the fishing industry, incurred over the previous decade. Garda investigations led to the preparation of files for prosecution. Another dimension to the expanding role of the Gardaí in protecting state interests involved prosecution of foreign trawlers found to be fishing inside the new Irish territorial waters limit. In 1935, An Garda Síochána oversaw a search and boarding operation of a French fishing vessel off the Blasket Islands. This operation supervised by Supt. Philip Chambers led to the arrest of the French crew for illegal fishing within Irish territorial waters limit. Against this backdrop, of increased activity in maintaining law and order, an ongoing debate continued around the essential need for the Dingle district to acquire a purpose built barracks. However, different interest groups lobbied for the acquisition of a vacant site on which the original location of the R.I.C. Barracks stood. The Kerry Vocational Education committee proposed this vacant site as a suitable location for a new technical school. Never the less a decision was taken by the site owners (An Garda Síochána) to reserve the site for the Dingle Barracks. After protracted negotiations, a design was proposed for a ‘long and low bungalow style’ Barracks. Eventually, in 1940, The Office of Public Works published an invitation to tender for the Dingle Barracks. The contract for the construction of the barracks was awarded to Mr. J.J. Buttimer & Co., 22,
Denny Street, Tralee. The final design was a two-story structure containing all necessary telecommunication services, administration offices and two holding cells. Later, a further three family homes for Gardaí stationed at Dingle were built inside the old RIC boundary wall.

Finally, in 1941, Superintendent Michael O’Leary took charge of the long awaited new Dingle Barracks. Supt. O’Leary, a native of Co. Clare, became the longest serving officer (1939-1955) at the barracks. He had been a soldier in the Mid Clare Brigade Flying column, during the War of Independence. Supt O’Leary was a renowned GAA sportsman playing for Mayo against Kerry in the 1924 Senior All Ireland Football Final. He excelled at hurling and athletics. His service record also encompassed the Emergency and World War Two. This brief profile of Supt.O’ Leary illustrates an approach taken by An Garda Síochána to attract a broader recruit base as more representative of the general population. In August 1964 a decision was taken at national Garda headquarters whereby Dingle Barracks would no longer be overseen by the rank of superintendent as a district headquarters for West Kerry and would be managed at Garda sergeant rank. Dingle Barracks was to become incorporated into the Tralee district. This decision came as a shock to Dingle residents. A delegation of Dingle people met with the Minister for Justice Charles J. Haughey to raise their concerns but without success. As a consequence of this decision, the last superintendent Sean O’ Colmáin departed in 1970. An interim arrangement led to the appointment of Inspector Richard Fahy from the Kerry division in overseeing restructuring arrangements. The Dingle Garda force was reorganised with designated roles of a sergeant with between four to six Gardaí to oversee service to the community and to protect the state.

Castlegregory Notes World Autism Day was actually last Saturday but Slainte Seniors ran "A Walk for Charlie" which was very successful, raising over 1000 euros. Well done ladies! Therefore, it was decided to celebrate World Autism Day this past Saturday and hopefully we can do equally as well. Enjoying a Dip in Scraggane Bay. It was chilly but for a good cause. After the dip, people were invited to come share teas, coffees and cakes graciously donated by Bernadette Bohan. Bernadette, by the way, also donated the St. Patrick's day cake a few weeks ago who we forgot to thank then. The other person was Lawrence O'Connor who safely delivered St. Patricia and Dinky to the school to start the parade. From April 12th Tidy Towns - Weekly evening TidyTowns work We are starting to go out again from Tuesday 12 April at 7 pm to 8:15 pm to weed, cut hedges, repair and generally improve our village. All welcome. Meet at the playground. Please bring your own equipment: gloves, secateurs, brushes, brush pans, buckets, shovels, trowels, safety vests, etc. Rubbish bags will be supplied. If you don't have equipment please let us know and we will ask some of our regular volunteers if they can bring spares. We will have some extra safety vests and gloves but these are in short supply. As the curtain came down on Sunday April 3rd on the last two performances of Killorglin Pantomimes 59th production ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ . The smiles on the faces of the cast and Ukrainian friends sums it all up Due to covid outbreak in the cast the last two shows had to be rescheduled but it was made all the more special when the cast extended the hand of friendship and sent out an invitation to Ukrainian visitors in the area to join them. The cast are now taking some downtime before planning for their 60th Show ‘Old Women who lived in the shoe’ which will be stayed in January 2023.
There was a large attendance of Board Officers,Club officers, Bord Na nÓg officers as well as senior and juvenile players present in the Dingle Skelligs Hotel for the launch of the Lee Strand sponsorship for the promotion and development of Gaelic games in Ciarraí Thiar. This figure might not sound so gluttonous when you consider that consumers are bombarded with huge displays of Easter eggs on offer for months before Easter weekend. Besides, why turn down such ‘great deals’ as three chocolate eggs for 3 euro? The problem with offers that seem too good to be true is that they probably are and in the case of mass produced chocolate eggs, the social and environmental costs are not insignificant. Virtually all of the chocolate consumed in Europe is made from cocoa beans grown in economically disadvantaged countries and is primarily sourced from West African countries. Claims by Cadbury (and its’ parent company, Mondelez International) that the cocoa used in its’ products is 100% sustainably sourced were proven to be untrue by a recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme, which found child labour being used on many Ghanaian cocoa farms. Like many commodities, farmers are paid a fixed price for their produce. The Ghanaian government, for example, pay £80 for a bag of cocoa beans while the ‘prosperous farmers’ supported by Mondelez International are paid £1 per bag extra over the going rate. In a good year the average farm will do well to produce 30 bags of cocoa beans (30 bags x £81/ 52 weeks = £46 per week). One in ten Irish people surveyed by REPAK in 2019 spent €50 or more on Easter eggs which puts the gross weekly income of an average Ghanaian cocoa farm into perspective. Claims by large confectioners on their sustainable sourcing of ingredients such as palm oil, the cultivation of which can be responsible for large scale destruction of tropical rainforest and degradation of land, water and ecosystems, have also been found to be false or exaggerated. And then there is the packaging. We create over 1000 tonnes of waste at Easter and while a lot of this waste is potentially recyclable the most environmentally responsible thing would be not to produce it in the first place. This is not to suggest that we should not buy Easter eggs, they have after all been a traditional symbol of new life and rebirth for centuries. Instead we should perhaps consider the quality, quantity, provenance and sustainability of what we purchase. There are also plenty of alternative tokens to gift as a way of celebrating Easter. DUMP campaigns have been run successfully by participating pharmacies in Cork and Kerry since 2007 resulting in over 12 tonnes of unused or out of date pharmaceuticals being returned. This year the campaign runs from March 14th until April 22nd. Storing unused or out of date medicine long term is not safe. Hoarding or inappropriately storing medicines can result in accidental poisonings and intentional overdoses. It can also lead to sharing of prescription drugs between friends and family for ailments perceived to be similar, which can have very detrimental consequences (there is a reason it takes four years and supervised placements to qualify as a pharmacist). The inappropriate disposal of medicines (e.g. flushing medicines down the drain) can also have deleterious effects on the environment. Common medicines such as paracetamol, beta blockers, antidepressants and antihistamines have been detected in the environment (freshwater/ soils) all around the world. While the concentrations of these are at levels considered unlikely to pose a threat to the environment or human health at many sites examined (but not all!), it is important to acknowledge that there are huge gaps in the research data as to the potential/actual effects of drugs in the environment. Moreover, there is even less known about the risks posed by medicines when combined with the complex chemical mixtures of other pollutants that are found in freshwater systems and soils. At the end of the day, pharmaceuticals* are biologically active compounds so the safest course of action to ensure they do not affect non-target human or animals is not to release them into the environment in the first place. The easiest way to do this as individuals is to return all unused or out of date medicines to a local participating pharmacy before the 22nd of April so they can be disposed of appropriately. *There can be a tendency to forget that veterinary medicines pose the similar risks. The supplier of an animal remedy be it the vet practice, licenced merchant or pharmacy is required to have arrangements in place to take back any unused or out of date product for correct disposal.

Film Review: Fantastic Beasts : The Secrets of Dumbledore Tom Ó Neachtain Fantastic Beasts : The Secrets of Dumbledore is the newest addition to the Harry Potter universe, and leads on directly from the events of 2018’s, Fantastic Beasts : The Crimes of Grindelwald. The film follows a group of globe-trotting wizards, led by a young Albus Dumbledore, as they try to prevent the manipulative Gellert Grindelwald from inciting an all-out war between muggles and wizards. After the muddled and disappointing Crimes of Grindelwald, it was clear that the Fantastic Beasts series needed a creative boost. Thankfully, returning director David Yates and co. managed to salvage something from this franchise, delivering a quicker-paced, and more focused narrative this time around. One of the best decisions made here, was to make the titular Fantastic Beasts key to the plot, and the creative creature designs are fully utilised in some stand-out sequences. This film also cleverly omits many of the plot-

As a result, more time is given to additions to the lore, and the magic-action set-pieces, giving the remaining plot-lines more room to breathe and develop. The controversially cast Mads Mikkelsen was a great choice to play Grindelwald, and he imbues each of his scenes with energy and dramatic heft. The rest of the main cast, for the most part, make an endearing group of heroes to root for. The elements of international espionage that were fumbled in the previous film, are fully realised here, fleshing-out the world of Harry Potter in creative ways. Unfortunately, the film manages to gain narrative momentum only around the mid-way point, and many of the earlier scenes feel like padding, and don’t push the story forward. This isn’t helped by the film’s mostly uninspired visuals. Yates’ direction only shines during the action-sequences, and the muddy colour-palate drains the film of much of its effervescence. Fantastic Beasts : The Secrets of Dumbledore is surprisingly weak visually, but delivers an engaging plot and strong performances, and proves that the Fantastic Beasts series still has enough narrative steam left to continue into the future.
