Nettles, A Timely Tonic for the Weary! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

substances. The steam of tea is good for the respiratory system and skin so before drinking the tea, you can have a mini-facial by covering your head with a towel and placing your face over the pot or bowl of steaming nettles. Once cooled a little, drink the tea. The soaked leaves can be used as a compress for inflamed and painful joints. Nothing is wasted! A nettle infusion is often used to wash the scalp to regenerate, grow and thicken hair. An infusion is made by boiling 60g of crushed nettle leaves in 2½ cups of water. Cover the pot for 10 minutes, strain and use the nettle water when rinsing your hair. Nettle juice is best for delivering the blood and heart benefits of the plant. Gather both leaves and stems and put into juicer. Strain the paste through a fine sieve or muslin and keep refrigerated in dark bottles until use. For hypertension drink a half glass before meals. For anemia, drink 1-2 glasses daily. For kidney and bladder strength, drink one glass on waking. These are just guidelines so always consult with your healthcare professional if you are taking other meds.

Keep your eyes peeled for the young nettle shoots that are sprouting up along our hedges, behind ditches, in the garden - just about everywhere right about now. Stinging nettles (urtica dioca) are well featured in Irish folk medicine and further afield, for almost as long as they have been around. Apparently, the stinging nettle was first introduced to here by Caesar's soldiers after their march across Britain. Away from the warmer weather of their home in ancient Rome and the long miles walked wreaked havoc on their bare legs. At the end of a tough day conquering, they would gather huge bunches of nettles and beat each other’s legs with them, thereby warming and soothing their weary limbs. In hindsight, it would have been less painful for them to ditch the skirts and wear a pair of trousers! However, we must be thankful to them as they started a trend and soon after, our ancestors were using nettles to treat ailments such as urinary tract disease, kidney dysfunction, arthritis, gout, hypertension, respiratory problems, skin disorders, hair loss, asthma and anemia (to name a few). Today, science can explain some of the reasoning that nettles became the number one remedy in its day. The young shoots are a rich source of vitamins and minerals - such as vitamins C, E, K, betacarotene and minerals such as iron, magnesium, silica and calcium. They have a stimulating action on the kidney, bladder and urinary system. When eaten in Spring, they help to clean the body of toxins, built up over the winter. They improve the excretion of uric acid thereby reducing the symptoms of gout and arthritis. Their anti-inflammatory compounds joined with minerals such as silicon and boron help ease the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis while reducing inflammation in the joints and tendons Stinging nettle contains natural antihistamines and anti-inflammatories (including quercetin), that can dilate constricted bronchial and nasal passages. There is good evidence to support the use of nettles for hay fever symptoms and allergies affecting the nose and sinuses, once you are not allergic to nettles, of course! The nettles have also been used to treat hypertension by regulating arterial pressure and strengthening blood vessels. They are used to treat anaemia due to their iron content and rich in vitamin K to help regulate blood coagulation. Not a bad list of health benefits from a plant that is often despised and considered a nuisance in the garden! The nettle provides an excellent source of silicon which is used in the body as silica – an important mineral to strengthen the matrix in which bone is laid down. Working closely with collagen, silica provides strength to bones, skin, hair and nails. The best time to harvest young nettle shoots and to reap their benefits is anytime from when they first appear until they go to seed. The young nettle tops are ripe for picking right now. However, the root is also used later in the year and can be dried and ground to a fine powder. Young nettle leaves and stems are used to make tea, infusions, juices and soups. Nettle tea is the best way to benefit from the diuretic and detoxifying properties of the plant. The tea is prepared through soaking the fresh or dried leaves in boiled water. This method allows the retention of active 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The nettle is robust and versatile and can also be used in cooking by adding it to soups or steamed with spinach for a fortifying side dish. Nettles have an earthy spinach-like flavour with a little tang and work well mashed into the spuds too. Another idea to use nettles is to slightly wilt them (taking the sting out) by pouring boiled water over them. Then squeeze the excess water out of the limp leaves and use like a herb in pesto, soups and dips. With all the worrying about food costs rising, nettles cost nothing, just your time. Take care picking out the young leaves, but if you do get stung, it could be a hint that you need to put this powerful food on your seasonal menu! Come for Dinner...

The 2020 Dingle Half Marathon deferred due to covid guidelines over the past 18 months is now scheduled for Saturday May 7th . Over 2000 participants will be starting from the Marine Car Park at 9a.m.and finishing at Dún Chaoin through the Ventry and Slea Head Route. Some short road closures in the area are planned between 8.30a.m. and 12.30p.m.with full details published in our last edition. SPEED LIMITS. Following my note on the new speed limits on our approach roads residents of a number of local estates request mention of their anxiety this week. It appears that traffic is regularly seen travelling at dangerous speeds through all our estates and residential areas and drivers taking little or no deed of children playing or older residents crossing the roads. Perhaps the suggestion of introducing ramps every 10 metres might help slow down the unthoughtful drivers many of whom apparently actually live in the estates themselves. CLOC AN CROCAIRE. We appeal to our readers who might have some details of Cloc An Crocaire ( The Hangmans Stone) in Crusheen to get in touch as proper information is needed before some commemoration can be planned for later this year. Yes another part of our history which could be lost with the passing of time and our senior citizens.

The club invite locals or visitors to visit Pairc An Ághasaigh any evening of the week where matches or training sessions of both ladies, mens, girls and boys teams would like some support. EMPLOYMENT VACANCIES. Readers will note that Job Vacancies continue to feature prominently in this publication and are causing some outlets to reduce their opening hours including more days closed each week. Students who have not yet considered employment applications are urged to do so and help ensure all outlets can offer a full service to locals and visitors alike. Employment experience no matter what type is becoming more important in job interviews especially for students seeking long term employment for the first time.

Farming News

Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) and National Reserve (Young Farmer/New Entrant)

Louis Murchan

BPS applications and ANC applications are annual applications conducted by either the farmer or their agricultural advisor.

BORD BIA ANNOUNCES NEW INTERIM CEO

The Basic Payment Scheme, ANC and National Reserve applications will close on May 16th, 2022. However, you can make amendments to BPS up until May 31st, 2022.

Bord Bia has announced that Michael Murphy will assume the role of Interim CEO in June, as Tara McCarthy is stepping down as CEO in June. He is currently the organisation and industry talent development director for Bord Bia and has experience in leading a number of Bord Bia departments over the past 20 years. He progressed from managing Bord Bia’s London office to leading its European office network, and was markets director for nine years.

Area of Natural Constraint The Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) Scheme provides payment for eligible land in disadvantaged areas. ANC is divided into mountain areas, severely handicapped, and less severely handicapped areas. These areas cover approximately 75% of the country.

He has been involved in the development and execution of strategy as part of Bord Bia’s senior leadership since 2007. He was responsible for the development of its ‘Talent Academy’ including five masters’ degree programmes with two universities. Previously a policy analyst in the IFA, he has also worked in the departments of agriculture and environment.

National Reserve

Michael brings a wealth of experience from the food, drink and horticulture sector to this Interim role across all the priority issues facing the industry and the organisation.

Successful applicants to the National Reserve receive entitlements at the national average. Otherwise, a top-up of entitlements is allocated to entitlements that are below that level.

CALL FOR INVESTIGATION INTO GREEN-CERT PLACEMENTS

This deadline also includes the transfer of entitlements. Entitlements may require to be transferred should they be purchased, leased or inherited.

Teagasc farm placements for Green Cert students should be suspended until an investigation into the system is completed, according to Kerry IFA, where it was claimed that there are “no young farmers coming into the industry”.

The National Reserve is a once-off application for young qualified farmers and new entrants to farming. The National Reserve scheme provides income support to these people setting up a farming enterprise.

Straw Incorporation Scheme (SIM) The Straw Incorporation Measure is a payment for chopping straw and incorporating it back into the soil.

Some genuine concerns about the farm placement system operated by Teagasc must be addressed, including the rates paid to the young farmers, along with facilities and standards on placement farms. The merit of such placements for students who are already from a farming background should also be examined and it was suggested that Teagasc should set up a helpline to allow those on farm placement raise legitimate concerns that they may have.

The SIM will close for applications on the same date as BPS applications, which is May 16th, 2022.

The placement on a host farm forms part of the full-time Green Cert course run by Teagasc over two academic years at its agricultural colleges and is eight weeks in duration for first year students and 16 weeks for those in second year.

Oats, rye, wheat and barley receive payment at a rate of €250/ha. The DAFM issues payment for oilseed rape at a rate of €150/ha. It makes payment on at least five hectares but no more than 40 hectares.

The “Green Cert” is the most widely accepted course to qualify for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) schemes and includes Young Farmers’ Scheme and the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS). It is also required for stamp duty exemption to those under 35 years of age on the transfer of land. 2022 FARM SCHEMES: DETAILS AND DEADLINES With the current CAP coming to an end, the spring period is a busy season for application deadlines for farmers and their advisors. From April to May, there are applications open for nine different schemes within the Department of Agriculture. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was first launched in 1962, and the EU is now about to commence a new CAP programme from 2023 to 2027. Tillage Incentive Scheme The Tillage Incentive Scheme (TIS) is a new support scheme for farmers. The objective is to increase the eligible tillage crops in 2022. TIS will close on the Basic Payment Scheme deadline, which is May 16th, 2022. Barley, wheat, oats, rye, oilseed rape, maize and beet are the eligible crops involved in the Tillage Incentive Scheme. The crop can be grown for onfarm farm, traded farm-to-farm or sold to a merchant. Mixed crops, for example, arable silage, mixed cropping, etc., is not allowed. The two key requirements of this scheme are: •

Conversion of grassland areas in 2021 to eligible crops in 2022;

• The area of eligible crops declared in 2022 should be greater than 2021. Payments will be made at a rate of €400/ha and will commence in December 2022. 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

You must cultivate winter or spring oats, rye, winter or spring wheat, winter or spring barley, and winter or spring oilseed rape. Following harvest, you must chop straw, spread evenly and incorporate into the soil.

Farmer Schemes: Protein Aid Scheme The Protein Aid Scheme is a payment to farmers for growing beans, peas and lupins. These are nitrogen-fixing crops, which can provide important environmental benefits. These crops are a source of protein for animal feed. You make an application for the Protein Aid Scheme as an element of your Basic Payment Scheme application. Farmers interested in participating in the Protein Aid Scheme should apply by May 16th, 2022. Beans, peas and lupins are eligible crops you can cultivate under this scheme. The payment rates vary for this scheme each year; in 2020, the payment rate was €215/ha. All of the above schemes are relevant to Irish farmers as members of the European Union. These payments provide additional supplementary income for farmers within specific markets of the agricultural trade. IFA SALARIES & PAY RISES Is this value for your money? The IFA recently confirmed that, Tim Cullinan, IFA president; Brian Rushe, Deputy-President and the organisation’s director general, Damian McDonald were to get pay rises. McDonald’s salary will increase to €215,998, Cullinan will be paid €140,000, while Rushe will now get €40,000. The IFA stated that these salaries have remained unchanged since 2016. However, there has been anger among some grassroots members to the announcement. This week, North Cork IFA called on national council to review the decision. There is a feeling out there that the timing of the wage increase is wrong, when farmers are struggling to buy feed and fertiliser, and pay for diesel and other farm inputs.

BPS 2022 It cannot be stressed enough that the deadline for this scheme approaches, and there are only nineteen days left to submit your BPS application for 2022. All other schemes are dependant on you applying for this, so if you miss it, you need not bother with any of the other applications. It’s that important. If you have herd from your advisor at this stage, and he assured you that your BPS is submitted, then leave him alone, as this is the busiest time of the year, comparable to the 31st October Revenue deadline, in the accountancy world. If you haven’t heard from him, now is the time to make that call. On a personal, I can assure all concerned that all applications are submitted, at this stage, so let’s look forward to another year.

LAUNCH - TUESDAY 03 MAY 8.00 PM Féile an Phráta 2022 will be launched in Quinn’s Pub in Ventry on Tuesday 03 May at 8.00 pm, with a few tunes and songs from Tommie, Saundra and others. All are welcome. Like many other community events, our Féile an Phráta was cancelled in 2020 and in 2021, because of Covid 19. We are determined that our Féile will be held this year, the final Comórtas has been agreed for Sunday 10 July 2022, with the eight local parish heats being organised in the previous ten days. In 2019, over 110 gardeners competed in the ‘spud off’, reflecting an evergrowing surge in interest in all things nature and especially in the ‘slow’ authentic local food / way of life. The eight local parish heats and the final competition have always proven to be super fun events, great celebrations of our local community lives and, most especially, of our native language and heritage.

This May bank holiday is a chance to step back in time and discover the heritage of a West Kerry village. Annascaul Historical Society are putting their best foot forward and are taking a once in a lifetime opportunity to permanently honour the trade, social, cultural and educational history of this west Kerry village for future generations. Annascaul is 250 years old. The village provided the trades required of its agriculture hinterland – blacksmith, miller, carpenter, harness maker, cooper, tailor etc. The village also served as an administrative and social hub for the area, barracks, court, church, school and shops. Nearly all the houses in the village provided a service/trade. The village also held fourteen fair days as well as markets and was an important stop on the Tralee – Dingle rail line. Coiscéim na Staire (Footsteps in History) As part of the upgrade of the N86 which will commence later this year the footpaths through the village will be replaced. In conjunction with the National Road Design Office and with the help of South Kerry Development Partnership Leader funding the historical society are proposing to place a series of inscribed flagstones in the footpath. These will mark, with text and images, the locations of the various trades and activities of this outstanding example of a typical nineteenth century rural village. Guided Walks As part of the fundraising to complete this project, a series of history walks of Annascaul will be held over the next few months. The first walk, led by John Hanafin, will take place on Monday 2 May. Registration will be at Hanafin’s Bar on Annascaul’s Main Street from 11.00 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11.30. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family.

He was with us, too, on New Year’s Day and spoke his mind again, praising his sister on a “lovely, tender bit of beef,” a striking review by a sheep farmer of a leg of lamb. He laughed off his embarrassment with his chuckle, his distinctive ‘he-he-he-he’. His Funeral Mass coincided with tight COVID restrictions, but we never felt alone as our kind neighbours, friends, and relations never allowed us to. Whether by visiting our home, dropping a phone call, tending to farm work that needed doing in our absence, or lining the road between Lios Póil and Annascaul as Paddy moved to his final resting place, a community showed the best of itself for us. They have continued since by keeping in touch or helping us manage the home place Paddy left behind. His family nearby are grateful, too, to all who came to Ballybog on the hardest evening of our lives, to comfort us or to manage a scene we’d never thought we’d face. He was buried three days later after a moving Funeral Mass, and we thank those who helped us say goodbye in the way we needed to, at a time when it was hard to say anything. Paddy was loved, and we’ll forever wish he had taken a different path one year ago. If you’re struggling with your mental health, please let that be known to a loved one or friend. Léargas an Lae le Louise Nic an tSionnaigh

le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne – Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar D’fhoghlaimíos ceacht beag an tseachtain seo – conas rud éigin a bhaint amach agus tú ag déileáil le daoine. Cheapfá go mbeadh sé sin foghlamtha agam agus mé 41 bliain d’aois. Níl aon deireadh leis an bhfoghlaim, is léir! Bhí ócáid mhór ar siúl sa cheantar an deireadh seachtaine seo chaite – ócáid a bhailíonn ana chuid airgid do charthanachtaí agus a chuireann go mór le hanam na h-áite, caithfear a rá. ‘Roinnt bóithre dúnta dá bharr, agus ana chuid fógraí in airde timpeall na h-áite ag tabhairt réamhfhógra – ach as Béarla amháin a bhíodar. Thug duine nó beirt é seo faoi ndeara agus ní dhéarfainn gur bunaíodh feachtas ach go tobann bhí plé ar Twitter mar gheall air, ar Raidió na Gaeltachta, agus ar ríomhphost. Agus cé hí an t-aon duine as mo chiorcal féin a sheol ríomhphost saghas crosta? An scríbhneoir seo. Agus cé hí an t-aon duine ón gciorcal sin nach bhfuair freagra? Tá agat! Mise! N’fheadar conas (ahem) ach ana sheans go raibh an focal, “Leisciúil,” sa teachtaireacht a sheoladh. Agus, “Aineolach.” Agus, “Drochbhéasach.” Caithfidh gur ghoid rógaire éigin mo ríomhaire nuair nach rabhas ag tabhairt airde air. Dúirt Desmond Tutu, “Don’t raise your voice; improve your argument.” Bhuel chuas amú ansan! Agus an réiteach ar an scéal? Botún a bhí ann. Faillí. Déanta trí dhearúd. Cheapas – ghlacas leis gan cheist a chur roimhe – go raibh na fógraí as Gaelainn fágtha ar lár d’aon ghnó. B’shin MO bhotún! Bhíodar curtha i gcló, ullamh le cur in airde, ach dearúdta. Gan tagairt dó sin mar ábhar díospóireachta ann féin, an lá dar gcionn bhí na fógraí as Gaelainn ann agus le feiscint do chách – mar ba chóir go mbeadh sa Ghaeltacht ar a laghad. Agus fós gan freagra ar mo ríomhphost. Seans gur chomhtharlú a bhí ann ach pé scéal é, bhaineas mo cheacht féin as. Agus fiú dá mba rud é nach rabhadar ann d’aon ghnó, cén luach a bhaineann le bheith borb i gcúrsaí teagmhála? Ní éireoidh leat daoine a mhealladh go dtí'n dtaobh ar a bhfuil tusa; a mhalairt atá fíor – teipfidh ort go h-uile is go h-iomlán. Casfaidh siad uait. Saghas cumhacht is ea é daoine a mhealladh do dhearcadh amháin nó dearcadh eile, agus caithfear bheith aireach faoi sin agus an, “Cumhacht,” sin a úsáid go cúramach. Féach ar Brexit agus Trump mar shamplaí cad a thiteann amach nuair atá cuma níos tarraingtaí agus argóintí níos cliste ar thaobh amháin d’argóna. Thárla iad siúd díreach mar thorthaí feachtais ar na meáin shóisialta ag iarradh meon daoine a athrú. Agus bíonn na sluaite borb agus maslach ar na meáin shóisialta chomh maith – gonta agus siúráilte damanta faoina dtuairimí; “Muna n-aontaíonn tú liom, 1) Tá tú mí-cheart agus 2) Is mise do namhaid.” Níl spás nó solúbthacht ann do dhíospóireacht nó gan a bheith ar aon intinn ach fós bheith ag réiteach le chéile. Ní bhíonn cead dhá insint ar gach scéal a thuilleadh. Cruthaíonn sé seo easaontas, ruaille buaille agus nimh idir dhaoine – gan chúis agus uaireanta gan smacht. Mar a dúirt uncail Spiderman sa scannán, “Le cumhacht ollmhór, tagann dualgas ollmhór.” Má tá an bua ag duine daoine a mhealladh do dhearcadh nua, nó má tá sé ann nó inti argóintí agus pointí maithe a dhéanamh go héasca, tá an t-ádh leo. Dar ndóigh bheadh sé níos éifeachtaí agus níos láidre má dhéanann siad i slí dearfach, mealltach é; i slí a spreagann maitheas seachas olcas, agus a chuireann le tuiscint seachas le crostacht. É sin lé rá, ní mar a dheineas féin é! Ach ní dhéanfaidh mé an botún céanna arís. Agus ar an ábhar céanna, cím fógraí ar bhusanna timpeall na h-áite nach bhfuil ach as Béarla amháin. Hmmm……geallaim má thagann ríomhphost nó aon sórt teagmhála eile uaim mar gheall air (Crank? Moi?!), le mil a bheidh sé scríte seachas salann an uair seo!

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland Comhghairdeachas Ride Dingle on a great weekend for the Dingle Peninsula. The success of the event with 3,000 cyclists was only eclipsed by the stunning weather shining down on the magnificent landscape. Visitors came from near, far and wide with our local cycling club leading out followed closely by the Mayor of West Springfield, Will Reichelt and Former Mayor of West Springfield, Ed Sullivan and his daughter Hilary, who represented our Sister City and Diaspora from Western Massachusetts and New England. Congrats to all the Ride Dingle Team, participants and especially to our local communities, who live along the route, for their patience and support. It is wonderful to see so many Festivals and Events making their way back into our communities and they truly showcase the incredible volunteerism and hard work yet creativity and passion of the people who are behind them. The countless hours, weeks and months of planning, organizing and doing, that goes into one special festival or event. They encourage us all to get out and join in or simply to be spectators and enjoy the magic of our local talent be it musicians, poets, singers, dancers, actors, artists, crafters, food producers, and so many more – celebrating this incredible landscape with its cultural heritage and vibrant language…….. No other festival represents these elements more than Féile na Bealtaine – “It has established itself as a top-ranking voluntary community festival – a reliably high standard, energetic, open festival, welcoming to all that have sympathies with the area, and an artistic home to dozens of local performing artists. The festival invites contributors to push boundaries, exploring new venues, experiments with form and collaborate, while remaining true to the festival’s deep roots in a rural community”. In 2021, the Coiste created virtual and outdoor experiences and exhibits but this year’s Clár na Féile is outstanding. Fáilte ar ais Féile na Bealtaine agus go n-éírí libh gach éinne! And so is the moral case. Tourism was responsible for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions between 2009-2013. That makes tourism a bigger polluter than the construction industry. Following Cop26, the recent update of the Irish Government’s Climate Action Plan and the release of the Sustainable Tourism Working Group report, getting started on this work has never been more important – from an ethical point of view but also from a smart business point of view. Our Sustainable Tourism Journey continues……. Sustainable Tourism Ireland’s recent presentation at CTCD/DPTA’s AGM highlighted that: •

49% of people still believe that there aren’t enough sustainable travel options available, with 53% admitting they get annoyed if somewhere they are staying stops them from being sustainable, e.g. by not providing recycling facilities.

83% of global travellers think sustainable travel is vital, with 61% saying the pandemic has made them want to travel more sustainably in the future.

81% of travellers say they want to stay in a sustainable accommodation in the upcoming year.

69% of travellers are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of their trip or pay to offset this whenever possible.

66% of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable offerings.

These stats come from Booking.com’s 2021 report on sustainable travel and show that the business case for the tourism industry to pursue sustainability is unequivocal. 16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Kate Pendy, 19, was the sole occupant of a house in Farranflaherty and her occupation was ‘Wardswoman in Dingle Union Hospital’. The origin of the name may relate to people who kept stray animals in a pound.

John Gess, 50, was a single man and the only occupant of a house in Cloghaneanode (Castlegregory area) on Census night in 1901. He spoke Irish and English. The surname is believed to be Germanic or Slavic in origin. Tretton John, 62, and Ellen, 50, Tretton lived in the same townland as John Gess above. They were a farming family with three sons and all spoke Irish and English.

Pendy

Cavan Martin Cavan, 60, and his wife Kate, 58, lived on a farm in Ballynane (Annascaul area). They had a son and a daughter. Their 13 year-old son’s occupation was ‘Labourer’. The name is probably derived from Cavanagh or Kavanagh and is popular in Antrim and Down.

A second family of the name Tretton lived in the nearby townland of Cloghanesheskeen. Eugene, 50, and Mary, 53 had two daughters and two sons. Eugene and sons John, 27, and Henry, 25, were ‘Masons’. All spoke Irish and English. Trimmer

Acknowledgment

Bridget Trimmer, 35 and a widow, was a shopkeeper in Coolroe (Castlegregory area). She was the daughter of James Kennedy, 82, a farmer. Both spoke Irish and English. The origin of the name is uncertain but may be related to cloth trimming.

Séamus Collins An Mhuiríoch

Flaherty What? Flaherty? Nothing unusual about that name…or is there? There is when it belonged to a French fisherman named Auguste Flaherty who was one of 140 French fishermen anchored in Ventry Harbour on Census night 1901. He was from Boulogne, a major fishing port near Calais. His family history would be interesting. Cooperwaite John Cooperwaite, 51, was a ‘Priest of the Church of Ireland’ who lived in Gortmore (Ballyferriter) with his wife Elizabeth, 48, and their daughter Jane, 24, who gave her occupation as ‘Scholar’. All were born in England. Their domestic servant was Johannah Kennedy, 23, who ‘Cannot Read or Write’ according to the census form but did that mean cannot read or write English? Difficult to trace this family name – possibly from County Durham. Mountain Did you know there were 8 Mountains in Murreagh at one time? Now there’s a very unusual surname. Richard, 38, and his wife Mary, 35, lived in Murreagh/Ballydavid with their six children. He was a member of the

Croí Quilters display Quilts and start a Quilt raffle for local charity. In the middle of winter a chance phone call between Helen Lovett and Rebecca Ní Chonchúir was the start of the idea to make a collaboration quilt. Five months later there are two handmade quilts to be raffled for Comfort for Chemo. This charity is fundraising to build a new Chemotherapy Unit for Kerry. The first prize is a double bed size quilt, it has 18 patchwork hearts made by five talented women. The patchwork hearts were collected and sewn together in Dingle and then later quilted by Nikki Foley in the Sewing Shed in Keel. There were left over patchwork hearts which have been made into a second throw size quilt. Once assembled this was posted to Wicklow where Rebecca finished the quilt, which will be the second prize for the raffle. The two quilts will be on display in Rice House in Dingle during Féile na Bealtaine. Tickets will be available from that weekend in Murphy’s Ice Cream, Strand Street, Dingle, who have supplied the third prize. Tickets will also be available in Ventry Post office and a few other premises. Tickets are €5 each, the draw will take place in mid Summer, the 21st June 2022.

Léiríonn Croí Quilters cuilteanna sa Daingean agus reáchtálann siad crannchur cuilte do charthanacht áitiúil.

Tharla an smaoineamh don chuilt carthanachta seo mar gheall ar ghlaoch seansa i lár an gheimhridh idir Helen Lovett agus Rebecca Ní Chonchúir. Cúig mhí ina dhiaidh san, tá dhá chuilt lámhdhéanta le cur i gcrannchur ar son Comfort for Chemo. Tá an charthanacht atá lonnaithe i dTrá Lí, ag bailiú airgid chun Aonad Ceimiteiripe nua a thógáil i gCiarraí. Is é an chéad duais ná cuilt ar mhéid leaba dhúbailte, déanta de hocht croíthe dhéag agus iad lámhdhéanta ag cúigear ban cumasacha. Bhí na croíthe bailithe le chéile sa Daingean agus tar éis iad a fhúail le chéile, bhí sé cuilteáilte ag Nikki Foley sa “Sewing Shed” i gCill. Tá an dara chuilt, ar mhéid níos lú, déanta as na croíthe breise a bhí ag na mná. Seo an dara duais sa chrannchur. Bhí an ceann seo curtha sa phost go dtí Cill Mhantáin, áit a críochnaigh Rebecca é. Beidh an dá chuilt ar taispeáint i Rice House sa Daingean le linn Fhéile na Bealtaine. Beidh ticéid ar fáil i Rice House thar an Fhéile agus i Murphy’s Ice Cream sa Daingean a thug an triú duais go fial. Beidh ticéid ar fáil freisin in Oifig an Phoist, Ceann Trá agus i gcúpla áit eile ar an leithinis. €5 an ceann atá ar na ticéidí agus beidh an crannchur ar siúl i rith an tsamhraidh , 21ú Meitheamh 2022.

Smoky Beans, Chorizo and a Poached Egg By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School Crack the egg in to a small bowl or ramekin and lower this in the water as it spins around. Turn the temperature down so that the water is a steady simmer. If you are cooking a few eggs have them ready in a small bowl and add one after another. Let them cook for 2½ - 3 minutes for a soft poached egg. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon, and place them on a piece of kitchen paper. To serve Put a large spoon of the beans over a piece of toast, carefully place the poached egg on top. Season with a little salt. This is an easy dish to make but to those you serve it to will think you spent hours making it. If you are looking for something to cook over the bank holiday for brunch, then hopefully this is it.

Bain taitneamh as !!

I think the combination of beans mixed with chorizo, garlic, red onion and chili is always incredible, mix this with a some smoky flavours from the bacon and smoked paprika, top it off with a soft poached egg to make it really special. Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne Cost Saving Energy Tips at home

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Social Impact of Credit Unions

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Credit unions nationally are being encouraged to prepare reports annually to highlight the social impact they have on their communities. This is a new initiative and Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne (CCCD) will Heating & Insulation: This takes up a huge proportion of our energy bills so conserving heat will you money. (Dr. Olive McCarthy Centre for Co-Operative Studies, UCC, November 2020). The ILCU then commissioned a survey of all their members in March 2021 to ascertain the appetite for measuring the Social Impact of individual credit unions nationwide. The feedback was that the overwhelming majority were in favour of undertaking the reporting of social impact but didn't know how to approach it. The ILCU subsequently created a social reporting template with specific key areas. Each credit union could choose which key topics best suited their individual needs and could base their report on their custom-made tables.

The game ebbed and flowed early on with Milltown-Castlemaine getting out of the blocks quickly to lead by 1-2 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. It was around this time until halfway through the second half that the GGC team found their footballing mojo. They proceeded to hit 3-8 to go into a 3-10 to 1-5 lead by the 45th minute.

This period of dominance was where they won this final. Corner-forward Jack McGrath struck a series of fine scores from play and frees while Jed Dando, the Hayes brothers, Liam and Conor, Keilen O’Sullivan and Tony Og Duffy powered them forward.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL: Cromane CC are having a fund raising clothing collection . Please drop off bags with clean dry items at the side gate of Cromane Community Centre Mon to Fri 9am to 11am. Up to May 2nd.

The crucial goals came from towering forward Fionn O’Sullivan (who struck for two) and the jinky Keith Moriarty, who burst through to finish a fine move that started with a Jamie Casey kick out before the ball was transferred through Ben Sugrue, Liam Hayes, Tony Og Duffy and Jack McGrath before being finished superbly by Keith Moriarty.

CLOTHES BANK: If you are doing a spring clean and wish to dispose of clean linen, clothes, they can go in the Clothes Bank located at Cromane Gaa Pitch. It is another way to support the club.No duvets, pillows or dirty or wet items.

Milltown-Castlemaine responded with 1-2 of their own before Keith Moriarty netted his second three-pointer of the game to put GGC ahead 4-10 to 2-7 with eight minutes left. Milltown-Castlemaine, to their credit, finished strong and hit a further 1-4 with GGC only responding with a Jack McGrath point. Despite a few hairy moments the GGC backs held out to seal a mighty win. Well done to the panel and their management. GGC captain Tony Óg Duffy accepted the winning shield from Fergus Clifford of the Kerry Coiste na nÓg board after the match. Next up for the GGC minors is the Central Region competition that begins in May. Team: Jamie Casey; Liam Hayes, Daniel O’Sullivan, Ben Sugrue; Joshua O’Sullivan, Jed Dando, Jamie O’Sullivan; Conor Hayes, Liam O’Neill; Keilen O’Sullivan, Tony Og Duffy, Darragh Crosby; Keith Moriarty, Jack McGrath, Fionn O’Sullivan. Subs: Brian Cahill, Matthew Murphy, Ryan O’Connor, Alex Scannell, Darragh Lynch, Matthew Naughton. SENIORS: Senior County League Division 4 (round 4) result: Cromane 1-15, Ardfert 1-17 Cromane travelled to Ardfert last Sunday to take on the home side in round 4 of the county league. Cromane were coming off the back of their first win in the competition in the previous round against Keel and looking to string two wins back-to-back. However, they got off to a poor start going behind 1-2 to no score after four minutes. They managed to settle somewhat and matched their opponents for the rest of the half with a Darren Houlihan penalty in the 26th minute leaving it Cromane 1-4, Ardfert 1-8 at the break. Ten minutes into the second half the home side still held that four point lead, 1-7 to 1-11. It was around then that Cromane stormed back into the game and hit four unanswered points to leave the tie all square, 1-11 apiece with 12 minutes left. It continued to be tit-for-tat in the last ten minutes with both sides trading scores with three minutes left on the clock it was still all level, 1-14 apiece. 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Small Changes

My grandmother loved a nice frock and used to buy a new one once or twice a year. I remember her dressed in her finery for Mass every Sunday, the only time during the week that she wasn’t wearing a flowery house coat apron to save her clothes from messy jobs on the farm or in her home. She was a big fan of spot cleaning clothes and airing them on the line instead of throwing them in a washing machine. She constantly lamented the fact that that sewing skills such as darning socks and stitching hems were no longer taught in schools. When clothes were finely beyond repairusually after a decade or so, they were relegated to the box of rags she kept under the stairs to be repurposed as anything from cleaning cloths to fancy dress costumes. I was reminiscing all this last week as I tried to explain to my daughter why a ordering a dress from an ultra-fast fashion website might not be the bargain she thought it was. The advice of an unfashionable mother is no match for the lure of a lovely gúna as seen on a Tik Tok video for ‘only a tenner!’. When it arrived two days later (all the way from China), the quality and cut of the fabric was so poor that it was unwearable. Nan would have condemned it straight away to her box of ‘giobals’. What is fast fashion and ultra-fast fashion? Fast fashion is the high volume production of cheap clothes inspired by luxury brands and celebrity fashion. Fast fashion companies produce new ‘collections’ every week while ultra-fast fashion brands such as Shein, Pretty Little Thing and Boohoo release up to 10,000 new items a day. The collaboration of these brands with social media influencers who advertise clothes in ‘fashion hauls’ is glorifying hyper consumption to the extent that Shein alone was valued at $100 billion last year. What are the environmental and social consequences of fast fashion? While fast fashion is obviously a lucrative business model, it certainly isn’t socially or environmentally sustainable especially in a world where the average consumer throws away 60% of new clothes in the same year they were bought. Huge amounts of energy and water are required to produce textiles and an average 35% of material is wasted in production processes before a garment even reaches the consumer. The fabrics used in ultra-fast fashion designs are mostly synthetic (at least half the clothing is made from virgin plastics) which means they will shed tiny plastic particles every time they are washed – worryingly, micro-plastics have recently been found in human blood, lungs and placenta. The boom in online shopping, with expectations of next day delivery and its associated fuel costs, especially since the pandemic, contribute more waste in the form of packaging and returns (up to 40% of clothes bought online are returned and over a quarter of those go straight to landfill). Just two of the 250 largest fashion brands (OVS and Patagonia) disclose how many of their workers are paid a living wage (defined as the minimum income necessary for a worker to meet their basic needs). A living wage does not equate to the minimum wage, so it should be no surprise that basics such as food security are an issue for Bangladeshi garment workers where the minimum wage is the equivalent of $96 dollars a month. Exploitation of garment workers is still an international human rights issue despite horrendous incidents such as the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 where 1138 people were killed and 2500 injured after an eight story garment factory building collapsed. Attitude –behaviour gap Generation Z (10 to 25 year olds) are hailed as the most eco-conscious generation and are characterised by their sustainable preferences and

activism. However, they make up the majority of fast fashions target demographic and the fact that 400% more clothes were purchased in 2020 than in 2000 demonstrates that the attitude-behaviour gap is huge when it comes to fashion choices. The power of aggressive marketing and the influence of social media and the unrealistic goals and expectations it sets are certainly to blame but so are the perceptions of what clothing should cost and what sustainable fashion is. In 1970 the average British household spent 7 per cent of its annual income on clothing but this had fallen to 5.9% by 2020. This may not seem like a large drop in expenditure until you realise that the average consumer buys 60% more items of clothes now and keeps them for half as long despite spending less. The argument of environmental privilege (clothing is a basic need and that wealthy people can afford expensive ‘sustainable’ garments) is often levelled against those who campaign against fast fashion brands but cheap clothing is not necessarily the issue especially as mid and high priced clothing can also be produced unsustainably. The greatest issue is how disposable clothing has become and if you need evidence of this google images of the millions of tonnes of textiles dumped in the Atacama desert each year. How to make fashion more sustainable? Ultimately it is the corporations that need to be tackled but consumer choices have a large part to play in making the fashion industry more sustainable. People think that sustainable fashion is about spending loads of money on sustainable brands, consciously made collections or having to wear harem pants with oversized woollen jumpers but really is about thoughtful consumption. Wear the clothes you already have, mend, washing with care, borrow, swop and of course thrift. Breaking a fast fashion habit does not have to mean total avoidance of new purchases. It can be difficult to figure out what clothes are produced sustainably and what is just greenwashing so investing in the best quality clothes you can afford with the intention of getting as many wears as possible from the garment is a good place to start. Support local designers, producers, boutiques and shops. At the end of the day fashion, as opposed to just wearing clothes, is about self- expression and creativity and this should not cost the Earth.

What's Happening in The Hub? Client Spotlight: Dingle Global Education We’re pleased to welcome a new local company into Dingle Hub’s co-working space in recent weeks. Dingle Global Education (DGE) was founded by Seán Pól Ó Conchúir and Lenka Bardakova in 2021. They develop and run studyabroad programmes here in Dingle. Their main market is American Third Level institutes and have just welcomed their first delegation last week. Twenty students who attend Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia are based on the Dingle Peninsula for a month. Their educational programme has been designed by DGE to focus on Irish Literature, Folklore, and Music. Corca Dhuibhne is an ideal location to dig into these areas. Their classes are being held in An Diseart, in the middle of Dingle town. Seán Pól, from Ballydavid, had been working from home but found home-life distracting and so he decided to trial working from Dingle Hub. He hasn’t looked back since!

28 April - 2 May 2022 ) and the huge array of events are outlined on their website www. feilenabealtaine.ie. Dingle Hub are involved in several events. Bígí linn / Join us! Voices from the Field Venue: Dingle Mart, Spa Road Date: Friday 29th May from 12noon to 1pm Lisa Fingleton is the Embedded Artist with Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe, our creative climate action project with farmers from across the Dingle Peninsula. She will be sharing some of her creative responses (photographs, drawings and journals) to hearing their voices and experiences in relation to climate change and the impact of extreme weather events. Lisa will be joined for this session by some of the farming participants - it will be an unique opportunity to hear the learnings so far. Caint iontach do aon duine le suim i timpeallacht na háite. Lón san aireamh. Saor in aisce/Free admission and includes a light lunch. Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe, A Creative Imagining is one of 15 projects supported under the inaugural Creative Ireland Climate Action Fund. Tá Dingle Hub ag stiúir an tionscnamh seo le MaREI agus an Green Arts Initiative in Ireland.

"Taking a desk at Dingle Hub was one of the best decisions I've taken this year; great facilities and team. But the best asset of all is the interaction with other businesses who also operate from here. You can feel the creative energy! It gives me such a lift and definitely increases my own creativity"

The course focused on three main areas of film: documentary, music video, and short drama production. This screening will highlight the products of their hard work. This event begins with a champagne reception to celebrate the achievements of the filmmakers and their tutors - well done all! ‘Ar an Imeall’/ ‘On the Edge’ Venue: Dingle Courthouse Launch: Friday 29th April 8pm Exhibition open Saturday 30th April, Sunday 1st May and Monday 2nd May 11am - 5pm We’re delighted to be exhibiting the bilingual sound installation that was created for TG4 television series, Creative Company. The creative team who worked on the piece include Dingle Hub staff Deirdre de Bhailís and Maggie Breen, along with Deanna O’Connor, Anne Tracey, Bernard O’Sullivan and Fiona Ní Mhurchadha. The concept comes from shared experiences of moving to the Dingle Peninsula or returning here. It explores the idea of taking a step into the unknown to create a better life and considers what it’s like to take a risk and to live on the edge. The recordings and soundscapes were recorded in inspirational locations on the Dingle Peninsula like Mount Brandon and Gallarus Oratory. Tá áthas orainn go mbeidh an píosa ealaíne seo (suiteán fuaime dhá theangach) le feiscint an deireadh seachtaine beag seo mar chuid d’Fhéile na Bealtaine. Chruthaíodh an píosa ealaíne seo do ‘Creative Company’, sraith theilifíse TG4. Anne Tracey, Bernard O’Sullivan, Deirdre de Bhailís, Maggie Breen, Deanna O’Connor agus Fiona Ní Mhurchadha a bhí mar chuid den bhfoireann cruthaitheach a chruth an píosa le chéile.

Seán Pól intends to continue working from Dingle Hub for the foreseeable. The next group DGE are arranging logistics for are from the University of Santa Cruz in California. Arriving in June, their focus will be on travel writing. Keep up with DGE on Instagram @ dingleglobaleducation.

Tagann an coincheap don bpíosa ón dtaithí coiteann atá ag gach duine san fhoireann againn bogadh go Chorca Dhuibhne nó filleadh ar ais anseo; déanann an píosa seo iniúchadh ar chéim a thógaint isteach sa dorchadas chun saol níos fearr a chruthú/chur ar bun agus féachann sé ar conas a bhraitheann sé chun dul sa tseans agus a bheith ag maireachtaint ar an imeall. Taifeadadh é ag áiteanna ionspioráideacha ar leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne - Cuan, Cnoc Bhréanainn agus Séipéilín Ghallarais.

You and Dingle Hub Contact us if you are wondering about hiring a desk here. We expect to get busier as the tourist season intensifies. Call us on 066-9150140 or drop an e-mail to info@dinglehub.com. agus Ghráinne, b’amhlaidh a dh’fhás crann giúise as uaigh an duine ag an mbeirt agus go gcuadar ceangailte ina chéile os cionn na n-uaigheanna. Tá fianaise againn go raibh an ghiúis forleathan sa tír seo cúpla míle bliain roimh aimsir Chríost. Bhain na feirmeoirí ba luaithe na crainn chun go gcuirfidís a mbeithíoch ar féarach ar an dtalamh. Deineadh an ghiúis a dhó nó a bhaint le tua cloiche. Aimsíodh ceann desna crainn ghiúise seo i bportach Chéide i dTuaisceart Cho. Mhaigh Eo in 1940. Meastar an crann seo a bheith ann ó 4,200 nó 4,400 R.Ch. Tá mórán cuntaisí eile againn ar mhuintir na hÉireann a bheith ag baint na giúise ón bportach mar ábhar breosla agus mar thóirse mar gheall ar ghile an tsolais a chaitheadh sí uaithi. Mar atá luaite againn cheana seacht gcinn de chrannaíocha uaisle a bhí ag na seana-Ghaeil, an dair, an coll, an cuileann, an t-iúr, an ghiúis, an t-úll agus an fhuinseog. B’shin iad an AIRIG FEDO. Mhair an ghiúis i gcorráit in Éirinn go dtí an dara nó an tríú haois déag ach ní léir mórán tagairtí di i nDlithe na mBreithiún sa tír seo. Giúis an phortaigh nó an déil a mhair in Éirinn fad a mhair an ghiúis shíorghlas lena spíonlach agus lena caora ar shléibhte na hAlban. Crann síorghlas í a bhfuil cumhra ar leithleigh ag an roisín inti. Is fuirist an t-adhmad a lasadh agus lasair gheal bhán a éiríonn aisti. Siombal na síoraíochta agus na hathnuachana í an ghiúis agus is mar gheall air sin a luaitear í le féilte na bliana a fháiltíonn roimh sholas agus theas na gréine agus roimis an dea-aimsir. Luaitear í in iarthar le hEorpa le tinte na Bealtaine. Dar ndóigh ba í an ghiúis ba mhó a bhaintí mar chrann Nollag i dtuaisceart agus i gceartlár na hEorpa, nós nach raibh ag muintir na hÉireann ar chor ar bith. Maireann an chuid is mó den bhéaloideas a bhaineann leis an ngiúis sa Bhreatain nó in Albain, rud a léiríonn arís nár mhair sí mar cheann de chrainn dhúchasacha na tíre seo. Cláirseach nan Craobh a thugtar uirthi in Albain mar gheall ar an ngaoth a bheith ag feadaíl trí spíonlach na gcrann. Deirtear sa bhFiannaíocht go raibh a choill ghiúise fein ag Fionn Mac Cumhaill, áit a mbíodh sé i mbun seilge nuair ná bíodh go leor ainmhithe le marú i gcollte Chúige Laighean. Ranganna Maidine ar líne amháin: 10.00 – 12.00 Féile Ealaíne na Cásca, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh Téacs le Dairena Ní Chinnéide ag seoladh Fhéile Ealaíne na Cásca 2022: Sa leabhar 'Art & Fear' le David Bayles agus Ted Orland deirtear thiar i ndeireadh gurb é atá i gcruthú ealaíne ná canadh sa ghuth daonna. Chun é seo a dhéanamh, caithfidh tú foghlaim go bhfuil an t-aon ghuth atá ag teastáil uait agat cheana féin. Gnáthobair atá san ealaín, a deir siad, ach tógann sé crógacht agus misneach fáiltiú roimis agus gaois a bheith ionat machnamh a dhéanamh ar an gcaidreamh idir ealaín agus eagla. Tá an obair anso neamheaglach. Tréaslaím le gach uile duine go bhfuil a gcuid dua agus a gcuid oibre agus a gcuid samhlaíochta crochta os comhair an phobail ina maireann sé. Ócáid cheiliúrtha an taispeántas seo do phobal Chorca Duibhne, don mhianach ealaíne atá ag idir óg agus aosta, tosnaitheoirí agus seanfhondúirí - ceardaithe oilte gur féidir linn ar fad foghlaim uathu. Ina measc seo tá Maria Simmonds-Gooding, le 'The Lake by the Bog' agus 'Trá-Mhara' le Tomás Ó Cíobháin . Ceann eile ar mhaith liom a lua sa chomthéacs seo ná 'Naomhóig ar an bhFarraige' le Liam Holden, 'Scilling' agus 'Feoirling' le Mick Davis ó thaobh na dealbhadóireachta de. Obair a chuireann sinn ag cuimhneamh agus tá súil agam a chuireann fonn orainn ár gcroíthe a chur inár bpócaí, agus an ealaín a cheannach agus

gaol a chothú leis inár dtimpeallacht féin, inár dtithe féin nó mar bhronntanaisí do dhaoine fiú. 'Portráid de Cheoltóir' le Bob Ó Cathail agus 'Sleeping Giant' le Ken Bolger. Tá ceardaíocht agus núálaíocht le brath go láidir in obair Níl aon bhaol ar shamhlaíocht ógánaigh na dúichí agus is fiú súil ghéar a chaitheamh ar obair chruthaitheach na leanaí scoile ar fad is iad ag fiosrú Duibhne nó Dovinia ina cló draíochta. Ní gnáthrud é ealaíontóir a scaoileadh isteach i rang don chuid is mó, ach tá seans le daltaí na leithinise ar fad go raibh daoine cruthaitheacha, tuisceanacha acu in Áine Uí Dhubhshláine, Lone Beiter, Susie Ní Chearna, Dómhnal Ó Bric agus Andrew Duggan chun scaoileadh lena gcruthaitheacht féin agus cuimhneamh ar an áit, ar an miotaseolaíocht agus ar an tseandálaíocht atá ar fuaid Chorca Dhuibhne agus ealaín a chruthú ag eascairt as sin. Tógann sé ana-mhisneach do chuid oibre a chur ar taispeáint. Raghad leis an gcéad tocht a bhuail mé: 'Adhradh' le Caitríona Nic Suibhne Brugha agus 'Farraigí Suite' le Julie Beckett. Dhá phíosa bhreátha atá ar crochadh le chéile dar liom ná 'An Dún Mór' le Marc Feirtéar agus 'Newgrange Entrance Stone' le Áine Uí Dhonnabháin. Ardaíonn ilghnéitheacht agus boghaisín daite phíosa Mhichíl Uí Cheallacháin mo chroí chomh maith leis an teideal álainn 'Tosnóimid arís le dóchas'. Taitníonn 'Stormy Sky' le Sarah Tormey, grianghraf don dTiaracht, radharc ná cíonn an duine de ghnáth, le Richard Creagh agus 'Stoirm Chlochair 4' le Céit Ní Dhomhnaill liom ach go háirithe. Bhíos meallta ag 'Clapsholas' Deirdre McKenna, neart 'Rip Tide' le Honora O' Neill agus criadóireacht álainn Lone Beiter. Píosa eile ealaíne a thaitin liom ná 'Ventry' le Sean O’ Riordan, 'The Three Sisters' le Stephen Flynn agus dealbhadóireacht Thadhg Uí Dhúshláine dar teideal 'Cuirliún Bhaile a'Chaladh'. Is breá liom i gcónaí ealaín ´Áine Uí Dhubhshláine agus tá dhá phíosa bhreátha leithe ar taispeáint anso. Mheall 'Tracks II' le Máire Uí Bhroin mo shúil chomh maith. Mar sin líonaimís ár súile le saibhreas na healaíne mórthimpeall orainn agus má tá sé ar ár gcumas agus inar gcroíthe, tacaímís leis na healaíontóirí mar chúis mhórtais agus cheiliúrtha. Ach ní fhéadfainn ach a rá go raibh compánach im theannta is mé ag siúl timpeall an taispeántais im aonar don gcéad uair, scáth mo mháthar Edna Uí Chinnéide. Ceann d'ócáidí móra na bliana ab ea Féile na Cásca di. Is í a dh’fhéach go géarchúiseach ar gach aon phíosa, a thagadh thar n-ais ina haonar chun iad a scrúdú níos mó, ach go háirithe gur bhean í a thacaigh le healaíontóirí, idir óg agus aosta, is go raibh meas aici orthu agus gur bhain sí taitneamh as ealaín. Bhraitheas go raibh sí liom sa tseomra. Ba dheas an bhraistint a bhí ann. Tá Féile na Cásca oscailte. Ceannaíg, is bainigí taitneamh as. - Dairena Ní Chinnéide Aibreán 2022 Tá Taispeántas Ealaíne Fhéile na Cásca ar líne go deireadh mhí Aibreáin agus an saothar ealaíne ar díol ann. Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Aimsir bhréa ach gaoth anoir agus ruaine beag don éag ann. Ainneoin san tá agus bhí na feirmeoirí agus na turasóirí sásta go maith. Bhí cúrsaí caide agus iomána ag léimeadh amach chugainn ón dTeilifís. Bhí an- chluichí ann. Ní raibh aon teora leis an gcluiche iomána idir Phort Láirge agus Luimneach. Bhí an imirt draíochtúil. Bhuaidh na buachaillí cois Sionna le cúilin beag allais. An Domhnach seo caite nár bhain an Clár an bonn ó imreoirí Thiobrad Arainn. Má b’annamh ba iontach í mar chluiche. Bhuaidh Dún na nGall ar Ard Mhacha- iontas na n-iontas dar le saineolaithe. Is diail an t-imreoir Mícheál Ó Murchu. Níl aon teora a bhfuil do scóranna gnóthaithe aige do Dhún na nGall ansan tá Paidí Mac Briartaigh a chuirfeadh an chaid isteach trí chró na snáthaide.

Neodrach Neodrach. Ambaice go bhfuil sé le tuiscint go bhfuil Uachtarán na tíre Mícheál D Ó hÚigín mí-shasta as a bhfdil le clos ó bhaill don rialtas. Is tír neodrach Éirinn a déir Mícheál an tUachtarán agus ní ceart a bheith bainteach le cúrsaí míleata. Ar m’anam gur chuala an Taoiseach ag tagairt don abhar ar an nDomhnach ar an dTeilifís agus luaigh sé tabhacht neodracht na hÉireann. An Fhrainc Is dócha gur comhartha dóchais gur buadh ar an iarrthóir a bhí acu siúd atá amuigh ar fad ar dheis i dtoghchán Uachtarántachta na Fraince: ach beidh deacracht ag Macron greim a choimeád ar an Assemblée Nationale sna toghcháin Pairliminte a reachtálfar Mí an Mheithimh.

Is léir ná beidh Ard Mhacha sa chlibirt deiridh caide i mbliana. Bí san airdeall mar tá goithí teaspúla ar Thír Eoin arís i mbliana. Beidh Tír Eoin sa chlibirt ag deiridh i mbliana. Chonaicís an- chluiche caide idir imreoirí caide na Gaillimhe agus Mhaigh Eo. Chaith Maigh Eo an chluiche uatha cé ná raibh ach pointe ag Gaillimh ortha. Ní raibh aon stad ná staonadh ortha ach ag cur an chaid sall is anall agus siar arís agus arís eile- go minic chaillidis an chaid – útamáil. Ní aon teora leis an méid uair a cuireadh an chaid amú. Dhúisíodar, Maigh Eo, sa deireadh, ach bhí an bhua ag buachaillí na Gaillimhe le poinnte suarach tábhachtach amháin. Ní bhuafaidh aon cheann don dá fhoireann seo Craobh na hÉireann i mbliana.

Historic Documents found in old Bible

An Ghaeltacht Seachtain ó shin bhuaidh sinsir na Gaeltachta sraith chomórtas caide Chiarraí Thiar in aghaidh Chaisleán an Ghriaghaire, 2-8 le 0-5. Ar an nDomhnach seo caite bhíodar ag imirt cluiche i sraith chomórtas an chontae in aghaidh Baile Mhic Eilagóid ach buadh ortha 1-16 v O-9. Beidh siad ag imirt in aghaidh an Léigiúin, Chill Airne an deireadh seachtaine seo. Craoladh Má tá rud a chuireann an gumh dearg orm sé an beartas cearta craolta cluichí tábhachta caide agus iomána a bheith ag comhlacht príomháideach. Ní bheidh craobh chluichí ná leath chomórtais ar fáil ar RTE 2, ná ar Theilifís TG4, agus tá RTE 2 tréis an bonn a baint ó TG4 i gcluichí tosaigh an chomórtais. Mo náire iad siúd atá laistiar den mbeartas craoladh na gcluichí leath chomórtais agus craobh chomórtais a bhronnadh ar chomhlacht allúrach. Airgead a bhuachaillí. Is mór an náire é. Féile na Bealtaine. Tá naoi láthair agus fiche ina mbeidh míreanna do Fhéile na Bealtaine ionta.Tá an Fhéile á hoscailt tráthnóna Déardaoin ar a haon a chlog sa Mhusaem ar an mBuailtín. Tá leabhrán breá ildathach in eagar ag coiste na Fhéile. Faigh an leabhrán agus beidh spraoi agat ag iarraidh na míreanna éagsúla a chíoradh. Tá leabhar álainn foilsithe ag an bhfile Bríd Ní Mhoráin agus is bláthanna álainn ó thosach go deire atá ann dár teideal Flora na Samhlaíochta. Beidh Bríd ag féachaint ar Bhláthanna an Díseart, agus ag seoladh a leabhair agus ag aithris dánta ar an Satharn i ngáirdíní an Díseart ar a leath uair tréis a dó. Is ar an nDomhnach ar a trí chlog a sheolfar leabhar filíochta Caifé Caol Béarla agus Gaeilge le Maria Ní Mhurchú i seomra Fresco an Dísirt. File agus scríobhnóir ildánach ‘sea Maria. Bíonn téagar ina cuid oibre. Tá go leor duaiseanna agus aithintis buaite aici as a saothair. Is breá liom a saothair. Is deas an rud leis imeachtaí eile a bheith á dtionól laistiar den nDaingean, mar shampla sraith imeachtaí i gcuimhne Cath Fhionn Trá thiar ansan, seisiún rinnce agus Flamenco i dTeach Siamsa na Carraige agus scannán faisnéise i Halla na Feothanaigh, gan trácht ar an réalteolaíocht ar an Riasc.

A number of documents have recently been found in Sneem belonging to one Maurice D. Cavanagh who was discharged, honourably, from the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia on 25th November 1889. Also amongst the pages of the Bible were found many receipts made out to a Mr.Thomas O'Connor from the year 1932 who lived in John St. Dingle. The businesses included are T. Barret (General Merchant), John Long (Baker), Muintir Cléirig and Mrs M Ashe. There is also Receipt from Garda John Kearny for a License for a dog issued on the 23rd March 1932 for the sum of £0.5.0. Bás Fuair Seán ó Dubháin ó Bhaile an Fhiadhnaigh bás seachtain ó shin. Scoláire agus Cigire sa Roinn Oideachais. Fear cuideachtan scéalta agus magaidh uaireanta. Ní raibh aon teora leis an dtuiscint a bhí aige ar ghaolta. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Máire, dá neachtanna, nianna agus dá ghaolta agus cairde. Bhásaigh a dheartháracha Pádraig agus Séamus roimis. Bhí an- mheas ag cách ar Sheán. Fear sár-eolach cáirdiúil. In Iothlainn Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
