K-Fest reaches out to Ukraine

patronage, partnerships and community building with fellow artists and local residents.

Killorglin. 3rd-6th June 2022

The arts strand will include seminar talks and artist-led workshops and the team also welcomes back the many crafters who bring so many wonderful pieces to the festival. The festival will open with The Poetry of Comedy on Friday night, at which audience members will be invited to recite from verses that might make people titter and laugh. Spoken word events and film will take place throughout the weekend, culminating in an open mic Rambling House on the bank holiday Monday. “K-FEST looks forward to packing our numerous pubs that morph into cutting-edge music venues at night with some of Ireland’s best up-andcoming bands and musicians,” said chairman Tim Clifford. Engaging acts lined up include Lemonade Shoelace, Naked Lungs and Everything Shook while, also on the music front, the festival is collaborating with the BIMM Institute Dublin to bring seven student bands to K-FEST where they will perform and also have a live video production made.

K-FEST 2022, a four-day festival that celebrates emerging artists and musicians, returns to the town of Killorglin on the June bank holiday weekend with an exciting roster of events. The festival team has booked hip-hop star and songwriter Alyona Alyona to play in the full knowledge that she won’t be able to do so but the fee will still be forwarded to her. Considered the top new rap star of Ukraine, in an article titled ‘15 European pop acts who matter right now’ the New York Times likened Alyona Alyona to gifted American rapper Azealia Banks. Festival Chairman Tim Clifford said K-FEST will reach out to those in Ukraine by booking and paying the star but not expecting her to honour the gig. “We would encourage other festivals all over Europe who are in the business of booking artists to do likewise and support Ukrainian artists.” he said.

The family and street programme this year will include buskers, art demos, a children’s market, circus skills, science, yoga, dance and more. For more information visit www.kfest.ie or send inquiries to art@kfest.ie. #kfest #kfest2022

The creative festival team will reach out to Ukraine at this year’s festival and musicians and artists from that country, who were among those to flee to Ireland to avoid the conflict, will be invited to perform and fully participate alongside local artists. In keeping with the theme, brilliant Dublin-based artist Aches – who specialises in large-scale murals and graffiti and is frequently referred to as the Irish Banksy – will transport his magnificent portable portrait of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Killorglin for the festival. In patriotic shades of blue and yellow, the giant mural is currently on show at the Central Hotel on Exchequer Street in Dublin. The Killorglin celebration of the arts, from June 3rd through to June 6th, will feature a gallery trail of over 70 visual artists, 30 live bands, spoken word artists, film, crafts, buskers, dancers, workshops, photographers, street entertainers and a myriad of family activities. All the events at K-FEST are offered at no or low cost to the public and several unused buildings in the town will come alive as venues for the various activities. At the festivals launch in Francie Sheahan’s Bar Killorglin last Friday night Declan and Breda Falvey was presented with a portrait photo taken by Sally MacMonagle, whilst Noreen Gillespie was presented with a photo taken by Michelle Houlihan. These framed photos form part of the Portrait of Killorglin project, where individuals who have contributed to the community in Killorglin have a portrait photo taken, this had been happening each year since 2014 expanding the collection. Selected artists at K-FEST will show their work in curated, bespoke popup galleries in the town’s disused commercial and private spaces and, to date, the festival has housed over 800 visual artists and approximately 4,000 original works of art. With an anticipated attendance of more than 10,000 over the bank holiday weekend, K-FEST affords new and emerging performers the ability to showcase their work to a diverse audience, providing opportunities for West Kerry Live 3

Keeping it Simple for a Long, Happy and Healthy Life

oils (sunflower, rapeseed). They do not drive to supermarkets to do their shopping or outsource their dinners to fast food chains, or skip meals, or eat ultra-processed foods, or drink fizzy beverages or do any of the stuff that we have normalized in our eating patterns.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Living a healthier life is kept simple in the Blue Zones because making the healthy choice is the easy choice. They cook with ease and stay active because everyone gardens and has access to affordable local produce. They have created an environment in which it is easy to walk or cycle to get around. They value family life and friendships, and they prioritize rest and recreation. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone has a purpose.

We are encouraged to eat a balanced diet yet knowing what a balanced diet is has become a a nightmare since populations around the world abandoned traditional farming methods and cooking styles for an “easier life”. Soaring levels of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and cancer may not have been part of the bargain, but we are now paying dearly as we dig our graves with our own knives and forks. In January 2022, Prof. Walter Willet, MD (Department of Nutrition, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) summed it up articulately when he said that “the COVID-19 pandemic, sadly, has laid bare the poor health of too many Americans. The ‘underlying conditions’—the chronic diseases from obesity and diabetes to heart disease and many cancers—correctly cited as heightened coronavirus risk factors for causing severe, life-threatening infections and higher death rates are closely tied to unhealthy diets and lifestyle choices. More broadly, these are the same unhealthy food choices that undermine our ability to stop climate change and achieve both planetary sustainability and resilience in our food systems.” Although speaking from across the pond, his message is global and recognizes that the major challenges we are facing right now with our health, food and climate change are all interconnected.

Before you think it’s all down to the weather…it’s not. For example, Nauru is a small sunny island country located in the Pacific Ocean near Papa New Guinea, population 10,000. More than 70% of its population are obese or overweight. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) it has the highest percentage of obese or overweight people in the world. More than 40% of the population have Type 2 Diabetes and many more have high blood pressure. Very few live past the age of 60. It wasn’t always like this in Nauru. They too enjoyed a simple life, sustained by growing their own fruit, veg and plants for food and a spot of fishing. The story of Nauru’s downfall began when huge swathes of land was given over to phosphate mining during the 20th century. By 2006, the mines were exhausted, the industrialists moved out. Nauru was left as an environmental wasteland, with no consistent source of income. Nowadays, their diets consist of white rice, instant noodles, imported Westernized foods and soda with very little fruits, vegetables or unprocessed whole foods. What happened in Nauru is an extreme example of what is happening to most of the developed world and the constant confusion about “balanced diets” is just another distraction from getting to the truth. The Blue Zones teach us that a balanced diet is more than just the food we eat and includes our participation from its production to consumption. Undoing the damage will not be easy but to simply live a healthier life must always be the easier choice. It's not all doom and gloom this week (I promise) even though the first paragraph is a bit dramatic! Before anyone can fix the world, we have to start in our own worlds and be free to make intuitive food choices for ourselves, our environment and our health. It begins in your own kitchen, really, and the food you choose to put in your fridge, your cupboards and ultimately, in your mouth. Figuring out what to eat does not have to be complex or require a degree in chemistry to read labels. A great experiment for you to try this week to see how simply you eat is to count the single items of food you buy – fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, legumes (beans, pulses), wholegrains, meat, fish, eggs, dairy and oils are usually minimally processed, singleingredient items. Compare this list with the number of foods you buy that are processed and/or have more than one ingredient listed on the food label. This task will provide an insight into how much of your own nutrition is being outsourced and out of your hands. Of course, there are healthy foods that have more than one ingredient and likewise, sugar is a singleingredient food, but making this comparison will help you become more aware of your shopping habits, and ultimately more aware of what you eat every day. This is the knowledge you need to make positive changes to your health, your nutrition and your environment in one fell swoop.

ORIGINAL KERRY

National Geographic researcher, explorer and author, Dan Buettner along with his team identified five areas in the world, dubbed the Blue Zones, where people live the longest, healthiest lives. They are Ikaria (Greece), Sardinia (Italy), Okinawa (Japan), Nicoya (Costa Rica) and interestingly the Seventh Day Adventists of Loma Linda (California). More people reached the age of 100 in these communities than any where else on the planet. Residents in Blue Zones live in very different parts of the world, yet Buettner’s research revealed nine commonalities that lead to longer, happier, healthier lives. They are active, eat a mostly plant-based diet, drink a daily glass of red wine (except for the Adventists), plus they are spiritual, stay connected with their family and friends while surrounding themselves with positive people. He refers to their diet as “Plant-Slant” not exclusively plant-based, but mainly made up of fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and wholegrains. Meat/fish is eaten occasionally, on average five times per month and dairy is rarely consumed and only when it is fermented (yogurt, cheese, kefir, buttermilk). Oils for cooking and salads is nearly always extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil (in Costa Rica). Never vegetable (soya) or seed 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The group of 33 arrived by bus from Ballyferriter and were invited for a welcoming cup of tea in the home of Catriona Fallon. Suitably refreshed, they took a walk down to Minard beach where they were greeted by music from Cairde Lios Póil musicians. Risteard Mac Eoin and Galway Johnson then gave the visitors a tour of Minard Castle and Marie Uí Ghrifín brought them to see Tobar Naomh Eoin Baiste. This was followed by more music and song - both Irish and Ukrainian! The group then departed to the Willow Tree Restaurant for lunch before returning to Ballyferriter. West Kerry Live 7

We are proud to announce that the Dingle Peninsula has recently been awarded 3 Blue Flags for the excellent quality of Inch Beach, Fionntra Beach (Ventry) and Maharabeg Beach (Castlegregory). Well done to the local authority staff and the local community workers who ensure that all 3 beaches reach the highest standards of water quality and onshore cleanliness on a year round basis. BEST PUBS REPORT. Well it's a case of take your pick with the great choice of pubs we have here in West Kerry who literally cater for all age groups and all individual tastes as well. Dick Mack's Pub on Green Street has recently been Dinner named by Lonely Planet as One Of Ireland's Best Pubs, an acknowledgement well deserved indeed. Congratulations to Ron, Finn and all the staff there who have retained the renowned McDonnell welcome and atmosphere continued by the late Oliver from his father the original Dick Mac. TIDY TOWNS. The entry form has been posted to allow us compete in the National Tidy Towns Competition again this year. Judging usually commences in early June and an unannounced visit can take place between then and the end of July. We appeal to everybody to help us present our town to the best standard possible by taking a few minutes each week to clean up litter or weeds or overgrowth in your own area. Also if your property needs a lick of paint you might get the brush out and the staff in the local paint shops really give good advice on colours and types of paint to use particularly bearing in mind the climatic conditions we have near the Atlantic. Míle Buíochas. GOING OUTDOORS. If you are taking some fresh air or exercise this summer the advice is Be Safe, Be Responsable and Be Considerate. Popular areas can experience parking problems so please consider others when leaving your vehicle in crowded situations. Even consider choosing your exercise in a less popular or quieter and less busy location at times.

FÉILE CHEOIL. I have no hesitation in saying that Corca Dhuibhne must surely be the Cultural Capital of Ireland especially after another wonderful weekend of concerts incorporating music, song, choral recitals and individual performances on piano and guitar by local and visiting artists. Féile Cheoil an tSamhraidh was organised by Gabor Peli and the Dingle New Music Choir and Orchestra with well attended performances in St Mary's Church, St James' Church and An Díseart Chapel. Regarding the control of chemical fertiliser, the national allowance of nitrogen will be reduced by 10% from March 11th, 2022, and a further 5% from January 1st, 2024, pending interim review. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will extend the closed period for applying chemical fertilisers by 14 days for Zones A, B and C. As for sludge usage, the EPA is responsible for regulating industries that generate industrial sludges through IED licencing. There is currently no data system that identifies the application of where sludges are applied. The advisory services and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine have reviewed the annual maximum fertilisation rates of phosphorus on grassland. This measure will remain and be available to farmers operating above 130kg N/ha through the P Build-Up facility. DAFM LAUNCHES KERRY ECO-SOCIAL FARMING EIP DAFM has launched the Kerry Eco-Social Farming European Innovation Partnership (EIP) in Co. Kerry. The Kerry Eco-Social Farming project was successful under Call 5 of the EIP-AGRI projects which seeks to build links between the promotion of biodiversity and farmers, local communities and the wider public. This highlights farmers’ importance as custodians of nature for the wider community. • EIPs have a total budget of €66 million and currently have over 3,000 farmers participating • the Kerry Eco-Social Farming EIP was successful in their application to Call Five under the EIP-AGRI programme • the thematic area for this call, which was launched in 2021, is “Farm and Community Biodiversity” with the purpose of promoting biodiversity through collaboration between farmers and farmer groups, community. •

BPS - 128,360 APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED BY DEADLINE DAFM in Portlaoise have confirmed that 128,360 farmers applied online for their 2022 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) in advance of the 16 May deadline. This figure is in line with application numbers for previous years. In addition, over 33,207 Transfer of Entitlement applications have been received online by the deadline. Any farmers who have yet to submit must do so immediately, as there is a 1% penalty imposed per day. As this (Thursday 26th May) is day nine, since the closing date, that would mean a 9% penalty incurred. Once the 25th day is reached, (which falls on Friday 10th June), there will be a 100% penalty imposed. Any farmers who have amendments to make, however, may do so, without penalty up until Tuesday 31st May. This could include addition or removal of plots, or adjustments to eligible areas of plots already submitted. Time is running out so act now, if you need to. €250,000 INVESTMENT ANNOUNCED FOR IRISH AGRICULTURAL SHOWS DAFM has announced a major multi-year investment in the Irish agricultural showing scene. Over the next 5 years, €250,000 will be invested in the grassroots showing sector with the rolling out of a brand-new class aimed at showcasing the best of beef breeding heifers. The new class will be administered by the Irish Shows Association (ISA). The “Breeder’s Choice” class will be open to four-star and five-star breeding heifers in two separate classes – traditional breeds and continental breeds. Pedigree as well as commercial heifers are eligible for the classes. Over the course if the summer, more than 60 shows will benefit from the new class. The Dingle Agricultural Show (which takes place on Sundat 17th July) has been included in this round of investments, with prizes paid out on the first eight cattle in each class. The requirement for four and five star in-calf or maiden heifers aligns to the aims of the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) and the incoming Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCBP) in the next CAP to increase the number of these heifers in the suckler herd. Four-star and five-star animals in the suckler herd can bring greater milk as well as overall efficiency to beef animals. Rules and competitions 1. The competition will be run at every show that has cattle classes. 2. This competition is open to all Continental / Traditional Genotype 4* or 5* heifers, suitable to make a Suckler Cow. 3. Heifers may be in-calf or maiden. All heifers must be between 12 months and 24 months of age on the date of the show.

• projects under this Call will run for one year with a total Call budget of €2.75 million

4. Each heifer can attend up to five shows. If a heifer enters more than five shows, she will automatically be disqualified.

Regarding the Kerry Eco-Social Farming EIP

4. All heifers must be haltered trained and led by a competent adult.

• this EIP has evolved from the Kerry Social Farming (KSF) initiative. This is a locally led project established in 2013 by the South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP)

5. The foregoing rules should be read in conjunction with ISA General Rules.

Entry Fee to these show competitions will be €10. Following the announcement on Friday, May 20 by the European Commission that it plans to allow member states to make a lump sum payment of up to €15,000 for those working in agriculture, one farmer organisation has called for clarity on how it will be funded.

The commission said that the payment – which is aimed at offsetting input costs – would be funded through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), which funds Pillar II of CAP. Although this news is welcome, most farm organisation agree that it is “less clear on where this money is coming from!

PROMOTION DAY OF VETERINARY PRODUCTS

“It is critical that mistakes of the past are not repeated. We saw in the BEAM [Beef Exceptional Aid Measure] scheme how unfair and overly complicated conditionality can result in thousands of farmers missing out on vital support. The new measure could be worth up to €15,000 per farmer or €100,000 per rural business. Finally…. Interesting facts: Two of our favourite cowboys (and “Big Screen farmers) celebrate important days this week. Clint Eastwood will be 92 years old on 31st May and is going strong; while John Wayne would have been 115 today (26th May), but sadly died young at 72 in 1979. RIP, Duke.

Deireadh na scoilbhliana buailte linn!

Tar éis bliain fada de thraenáil agus cluichí deacra, chuadar ar aghaidh go cluiche ceannais na scoileanna, i gcoinne Meánscoil na Toirbhirte, Oileán Chiarraí. Chuaigh bus ón scoil, lán le daltaí, go Trá Lí chun tacaíocht a thabhairt dos na cailíní. Spreag an lucht leanúna, agus traenáilaithe na foirne Joe Mac Toirealaigh agus John Ó Conchúir, iad chun cluiche den scoth a imirt! Ní raibh bua éasca acu agus throid Oileáin Chiarraí go cruaigh go deireadh an cluiche ach d’fhan an Pobalscoil chun tosaigh le linn an cluiche ar fad.

Turas Scoile na hIdirbhliana

Scór deirneach: 4:7 1:6 go PCD!!

Scéalta ón bPobalscoil Aisling Ní Dhubhaigh agus Eileen Ní Dhuibhginn

Críoch iontach don scoilbliain a bhí ann dos na cailíní, go háirithe dos na daltaí ón 6ú bliain a bhí á imirt a gcluiche deirneach leis an scoil an lá san. Ag 9.30 ar maidin ar an gCéadaoin 11ú lá Bealtaine, rith lucht na hidirbhliana amach doirse na Pobalascoile le cásanna rotha lán go barra le feistisí snámha, éadaí codlata agus éadaí compordacha! Thug ceol pop, drill agus culchie chomh fada le chontae an Chláir sinn agus d’fhanamar ann thar dhá oíche ag baint taitneamh as craic agus as comhluadar a chéile! Chuamar go dtí an Bhoirinn agus d’fhéachamar ar na saghasanna carraigeacha suimiúla, d’itheamar pizza agus pasta, d’imríomar laser tag, bhíomar ag babhláil agus chuamar ag snámh sa linn san óstán. An lá dar gcionn, i ndiadh bricfeasta blasta, thug bád farantóireachta chun na hoiléain Árainn sinn, d’itheamar burgair deasa amuigh ann agus d’fhéachamar thart timpeall Inis Mór. D’fhoghlaimíomar faoi shaol na ndaoine ar an oileán. Níor rith an aimsir linn ar an turas bád fillte, thriomaíomar ár ngruaig agus chuireamar smiot smideadh orainn san óstán, ansin bhaineamar taitneamh as béile blasta i mbialann Síneach agus d’fhéachamar ar an scannán ‘Doctor Strange’ sa phictiúrlann áitiúil. Ar ár lá deireanach phacáileamar ár dtraipisí, gan dearmad a dhéanamh ar an masc capaill Giuseppe, agus d’fhágamar an óstán deas! Bhí ár gcuid ngruaige in aimhréidh ón ngaoith láidir ar Aillte an Mhothair, ach bfhiú é don radharc dochreidte timpeall orainn. Bhí lón deas againn agus as sin chuamar ag kayakáíl mar ghrúpa! Ní raibh culaitheanna uisce againn, ach bhí an ghrian go hard sa spéir agus bhaineamar súp an tsaoil as. Faoi mar a dhúirt Tom Ó Conchúir, ‘the craic was mighty!’ Filleamar abhaile an tráthnóna sin tuirseach traochta ach lán sásta. #GaiscíPCD2022 Ar an Máírt an 17ú bhí Gaiscí PCD againn ar scoil don chéad uair ó thús na paindéime. Céiliúradh a bhí ann chun aitheantas a thabhairt do ghach rud a thit amach i rith na bliana. Níl aon dabht ach gur bliain dár saol a bhí ag ár scoilne le comórtaisí buaite, rannpháirtíocht agus ionadaíocht ionatach. Bhailigh an scoil le chéile agus idir spóirt, ceol, teic, ealaíon, talann scríbhneoireachta, teangacha agus garraídóireacht, bhí cúis bhróid ag gach duine.

Bhí ceathrar ónár scoil ag imirt ar fhoireann faoi 14 Ciarraí, a bhuaigh cluiche ceannais na hÉireann ar an Domhnach 21ú Bealtaine i gcoinne foireann Chorcaí! Tá scrúduithe ag teacht aníos d’ana chuid scolairí agus guímid gach rath orthu sna seachtainí rompu! Chun críoch a chur lenár gcuid scéalta faoin bpobalscoil is mian linn ár mbuíochas a ghabháil le héinne a lean sin agus a dúirt rudaí deasa faoinár naltanna, le John Ó Flannúra a thug an ról seo dúinn ar son na scoile, leis na comhordatheoirí teangan scoile Aoife agus Eibhlís, le Marie Ní Dheargáin a thug ionspioráid agus cruth na halta dúinn nuair a bhíomar i bponc, agus gan dabht, le Lorcán agus Mossy, a thug deis iontach peannaireachta dúinn tríd an bhliain agus a phriontálann eagrán iontach Chorca Dhuibhne Beo gach uile coicís. What's Happening in The Hub? Corca Dhuibhne 2030 initiative wins Pride of Place award Bhí baill d'fhoireann Mhol Chorca Dhuibhne i láthair ag searmanas gradam 'Pride of Place' IPB i gCill Airne le déanaí agus bhí gliondar orthu nuair a bhuaigh tionscnamh Corca Dhuibhne 2030 Gradam Gníomhaíocht Aeráide. Cuireadh tús leis an tionscnamh ilpháirtí seo sa bhliain 2018. Tá sé mar chuspóir ag ár dtionscnamh na hathruithe sochaíocha atá de dhíth chun aistriú go sochaí ar charbón íseal a éascú trí bheith ag obair ar thionscadail le scoileanna, gnólachtaí, agus an pobal feirmeoireachta áitiúil.

pobail. Ár mbuíochas le pobail Chorca Dhuibhne as a hoscailte is a rabhadar don nuálaíocht. Is é seo an chúis, le fírinne, go rabhamar in ann bheith ag obair le taighdeoirí, lucht ceaptha polasaí, agus áisíneachtaí náisiúnta chun teacht ar réitigh ar an dúshlán aeráide. Cuireann seo ar ár gcumas oibriú as láimhe a chéile i dtreo todhchaí atá inmharthana ó thaobh timpeallachta, geilleagair agus cúrsaí sochaíocha araon.” Is comórtas uile-Éireann a thugann aitheantas d'obair pobal ar fud oileán Éireann é 'Pride of Place' IPB (i gcomhpháirt le Co-operation Ireland). Baineann fócas an chomórtais le daoine ag teacht le chéile chun saol laethiúil a bpobal a mhúnlú, a athrú agus a fheabhsú. IPB Pride of Place (in association with Cooperation Ireland) is an all-island competition that acknowledges the work that communities are doing all over the island of Ireland. The competition focus is about people coming together to shape, change and improve daily lives in their communities.

local farms interested in starting agri-food or agritourism businesses. Sensor technologies installed on farms can provide useful data that helps new products be marketed. This meeting heard farmer's views and experiences with the sensors to date, as well as their ideas about future developments. The idea of creating a bio-district for Dingle Peninsula was also discussed, which would increase the amount of organic farming here. The gathering heard the experiences of Kate Carmody, an organic dairy farmer who has also begun to grow hemp on her land. She told the group that she now receives more for her milk, despite milking 20 cows rather than 70. With lively debate and great feedback received, discussions lasted well into the night.

We are also up for an award in the .IE Digital Town Awards, having been shortlisted in the Digital Changemaker category. An-áthas orainn a bheith curtha san áireamh! Last year we won the Small Town category as well as being their overall winner. That Awards Ceremony will be a virtual event, to take place on Wednesday 8th June. Fáilte Dinny! Pride of Place Awards 2021 – Dingle Hub team.

Baineann Tionscadal Ploutos le bheith ag obair le feirmeacha áitiúla go bhfuil spéis acu gnónna agrabia nó agrathurasóireachta a thosnú. Is féidir le teicneolaíocht bhraiteora ar fheirmeacha eolas áisiúil a sholáthar a chabhraíonn chun margaíocht a dhéanamh ar tháirgí nua.

From Left Dinny Galvin, Clare Watson (MaREI), Deirdre de Bhailís, Catríona Fallon Members of Dingle Hub team attended the IPB Pride of Place awards ceremony in Killarney recently and were delighted that the Corca Dhuibhne 2030 initiative won a Climate Action Award. This multi-partner initiative began in 2018. Our initiative seeks to enable the societal changes needed to transition to a low carbon society by working on projects with schools, businesses, and the local farming community. Competition judges said they are convinced that the mission to build a creative, sustainable, and inclusive community in the Dingle Peninsula is well on the way to being achieved. Collecting the award on the night was Deirdre de Bhailís, General Manger with Dingle Hub who had this to say: “We started with a remote working hub, but we built on that to develop it as a focal point for community climate action. Thanks to the communities of West Kerry for their openness to innovation. This really is the reason we could work with researchers, policy makers and national agencies to find solutions to the climate challenge. It allows us all to work together towards an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable future." Dúirt moltóirí an chomórtais go gcreideann siad nach fada go mbeidh an misean chun pobal cruthaitheach, inmharthanach agus ionchuimsitheach a thógáil ar Chorca Dhuibhne bainte amach. B'í Deirdre de Bhailís, Bainisteoir Ginearálta Mhol Chorca Dhuibhne, a bhailigh an gradam ar an oíche, agus bhí seo le rá aici: “Thosnaíomar le mol cianoibre, ach thógamar air sin, á fhorbairt mar chroílár do ghníomhaíocht aeráide 16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Ar an gCéadaoin seo caite, 18 Bealtaine, bhí breis agus 30 duine i láthair do cheardlann bainteach le Tionscadal Ploutos de chuid an AE. Reachtáladh an cheardlann i dTabhairne Uí Shúilleabháin i nGarraí na dTor, Lios Póil.

Chuala an cruinniú seo dearcadh agus taithí feirmeoirí leis na braiteoirí seo, chomh maith lena smaointí faoi conas iad a fhorbairt amach anseo. Pléadh an smaoineamh bith-cheantar a chruthú i gCorca Dhuibhne, rud a chuirfeadh borradh faoin méid feirmeoireachta orgánaí a bhíonn ar siúl anseo. We have a new employee in the role of Energy and Agriculture Liaison Officer and it’s a name you may be familiar with: Dinny Galvin. As a dairy farmer, Dinny has been involved with Dingle Hub across several projects for some years now, like the Farm Ambassador Programme. This introduced sensor technology onto his farm (among others) to measure and manage soil moisture, milk and slurry height as well as providing localised weather data. He also works as a Community Energy Mentor and is the driving force behind the West Kerry Dairy Farmers Sustainable Energy Community. This new part-time role will see Dinny drive local participation in the sustainable low carbon development of the Dingle Peninsula. Go n-eirí leat Dinny! From the 1901 Census in West Kerry

‘Shopkeeper’. The couple had seven daughters and three sons. Three of the daughters were ‘Dressmakers’ and another was a ‘Milliner’. The family name is still remembered in Dingle.

Ted Creedon

Mary McGailey, 40, also lived in John Street and her occupation was ‘Publican’. Other occupants in the house were her brother Thomas Lynch, 29, two sons and two daughters. She was married but there’s no mention of a husband on the census form.

In this issue we take a final look at some of the Unusual Surnames found in the 1901 Census in West Kerry, from Camp to Dunquin. The Census was taken on Sunday 31 March. Swindell There are records of three Richard Swindells in the Castlegregory area between 1836 and the 1901 Census. The first Richard Swindell was a Church of Ireland clergyman in Castlegregory in 1836. The second Richard Swindell, 69, (born c. 1832) was a retired R.I.C. officer, turned farmer, in the townland of Tullaree. He was a member of the Church of Ireland. He and his wife Mary, 60, had two daughters, Mary Jane, 31 and Marcella, 22.

McGailey

However, in a list of R.I.C officers in Holy Ground, on Census Form H, there is a ‘J. McG’ Sergeant. Policemen were normally only recorded in the census by their initials. Stoat/Hand John Stoat, 70, was a Coast Guard pensioner and widower living in Green Street. His daughter Agnes, 32, was married to Peter Hand, a Royal Navy pensioner, originally from County Monaghan. They had a son named J. J. Patrick Hand. The Hand family is well known in the area.

The third Richard Swindell, 31, lived in the nearby townland of Martramane with his wife Susan, 32, and they had no children. Richard was the ‘Station Master’ in Castlegregory and a member of the Church of Ireland. He was born in Limerick as was Mary Jane above. They were both aged 31 – twins? Seaward Edwin Seaward, 32, and his wife Bessy, 32, lived in Murreagh/Ballydavid with their two small children. All were born in England. Edwin recorded his occupation as ‘Seaman’ – (Well you would with a name like that). Anyway, he is listed along with members of the Coastguard community in the 1901 Census. Dobyns William Dobyns, 65, lived in Green Street, Dingle, with his wife (first name smudged on census form) aged 46. He was ‘Clerk of Petty Sessions’. There is no mention of children but they may have had children who had flown the coop. They had two servants. The Clerk of Petty Sessions was the ordinary clerk attending courts in his district or area. Such courts usually involved minor offences, were supervised by magistrates and did not have juries. William Dobyns died on 13 August 1905 and left effects to the value of £304, according to the Calendar of Wills. Jevers Thomas Jevers, 61 and a widower, lived in John Street, Dingle. He was ‘Clerk of Poor Law Union’ by profession. He was born in Limerick City in 1840. The name ‘Jevers’ may be Dutch in origin. Mansfield John Mansfield, 63, was a farmer in Knockavrogeen, Dingle with his wife, Mary, 64, two daughters and four grandchildren. The eldest daughter Bridget was a widow aged 31 and she was the mother of the four children – the youngest was one year old. Her husband’s family name was Houlihan. The name Mansfield is not unknown in Kerry. Depre Timothy Depre, 24 and a single man lived on Quay Street, Dingle, with his widowed mother Fanny, 55. His occupation was ‘Fisherman’. He was born in Galway while his mother was from Cork. Both spoke Irish and English. Difficult to trace the origin of this name – possibly French - Depré? Osbaldeston The Census records a ‘House in The Mall’ Dingle. The house was occupied by six Roman Catholic teachers, all single and all spoke Irish and English. It can only be the Christian Brothers community. One of them was William Osbaldeston. 44, born in England. The name is associated with the town of Osbaldeston in Lancashire. Duckham Thomas Duckham, 62, and his wife Bridget, 48, lived in John Street. He was born in England and was an ‘Ex Coast-Guard’. Bridget (née Sullivan) was a

Is amhlaidh a bíodh Grandma inár bhfeighil le linn sciúird ráithiúil Mham is Dhaid ar Thrá Lí do riachtanais tí is feirme. Bhí ana-ghrá ag Grandma d’ainmhithe leis, agus bhí de nós aici labhairt leo fé mar ba dhaonnaí iad. ‘Nár imí uainn ach é!’ Ós ag trácht ar Ghrandma mé, im dhéagóir, d’inis sí dom fén eachtra a tharla aige baile ar an gCom, le linn dise ’bheith ina gearrchaile, mar leanas – go luath san earrach ag casadh an chéid seo chaite, gur thug a h-athair, Patrick Deane, iasacht dá chapall do chomharsa béal dorais, a bhí a’ triail ar Shliabh – dtín bportach cois Ghleann an nGealt cúpla míle soir an bóthar. Ar fhilleadh abaile aríst dó le fuinneadh lae, cad a dhein sé le láir na nDuibhneach, in ionad í sheoladh isteach sa stábla mar a cheap Patrick a dhéanfadh, nár scaoil í isteach sa ghort ar chliathán an tí. Mar a tharla, shéid ina ghála thar oíche agus dá thoradh buaileadh breoite le pneumonia an capall bocht de bharr fliche is fuachta na h-oíche, agus cailleadh í roinnt laethanta ina dhiaidh sin. Ní nach ionadh, luigh bás na lárach go trom ar athair Mháire. Dúirt Grandma go raibh an teaghlach trína chéile de bharr na tubaiste, agus ba thubaist gan dabht i súile a h-athar, toisc a raibh ag brath ar an gcapall an uair úd. Ina dhiaidh sin is uile, b’í paidir a seanmháthar féin óna cathaoir cois tine ‘nár imí uainn ach é’, mar fhaoiseamh ón gcallshaoth. Cuimhním, agus is sólás dom guí eagnaí úd mo shin-seanmháthar chríonna nuair a bhuaileann scailp umainn fhéin ó am go chéile! ‘All for Thee, O Lord’ Bhí capall ag formhór gach feirmeoir inár bparóiste is mé óg sna caogaidí déanacha, agus is mó eachtra a lean iad. Seo ceann a bhí dearúdta agam nó gur léigh mé alt suimiúil agus tábhachtach ar bhéaloideas Uíbh Ráthaigh le Ríonach uí Ógáin le déanaí. Is mar seo a tharla inár gcásna: Tráthnóna geal fómhair, dh’eagraigh Daid, Bill Casey, grásta air, meitheal chlainne chun dhá bhromach gearráin a bhí ar an bhfeirm againn (iad fiáin go leor ceal láimhseála) a theanntú i gcúinne an ghoirt, le crann sailí cois claí ann mar thaca lenár gcúram. Dheineamair an dá bhromach a chluicheadh isteach go dtín gcúinne thiar-thuaidh úd cois srutháin, agus chaith Daid adhastar le snaidhm a’ ghaid timpeall ar mhuinéal an bhromaigh ab fhiáine díobh, mar a deintí sna Westerns fadó! Dhein sé iarracht ansan an t-adhastar a chasadh timpeall ar an gcrann sailí san aon ráib amháin lena cheangal. Ach, mo léan, lena linn sin, pocléim ón mbromach, a d’fhág méaranta Dhaid fáiscithe idir an téad is coirt an chrainn, ’gus féithleoga nochtaithe le fuil dhearg ag sileadh go fuíoch. In ionad eascaine ónár leithéidne, b’fhéidir, an ghuí ‘All for Thee, O Lord’, i gcogar ag Daid, d’iarraidh an phian is an pheannaid a dh’iompar – dea-shampla gan dabht don óige! Dónal Cheanna hEich Tá macalla den eachtra thuas in alt uí Ógáin sa scéilín seo a leanas a d’inis Tadhg Mac Giolla Choda (78), ón Lóthar do Thadhg Ó Murchú, bailitheoir iomráiteach béaloidis, ar an 8ú Feabhra 1936, mar lenas: Do bhí bromach capaill i mBarra na hUíne agus níorbh fhéidir teacht suas in aon tsaghas slí leis agus do bhí a raibh ar an áit ag rith ina dhiaidh i slí is go raibh sé ag imeacht fiáin is ní fhéadfadh éinne aon cheart a bhaint de. Do bhí fear i gCeann Eich go dtugaidís Dónal Cheanna hEich air agus do chuala sé an comhrá so, agus do dh’imigh sé, agus do chuaigh sé go Barr na hUíne agus do chluich sé an capall isteach go féith sa tslí gur bheir sé uirthi… 3 Cothaíonn gá seift, adeirtear! 18 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

‘A threabhsar taobh siar aniar air!’ Maireann eachtra eile a bhaineann le capaill i gcuimhne na ndaoine – i mbéaloideas comhaimseartha Lios Póil an turas so, a d’inis Seán Ghearóid Bodhléir ó Ghualainn in athuair dom le déanaí. 4 Bainimse leis an nglúin úd gur cuimhin linn tincéirí a bheith sa chomharsanacht inár n-óige sna caogaidí, agus iad ag lonnú lena gcarbháin agus a mbothanna cois bóthair ag barra Bhóthar na Lathaí, cúpla céad slat soir ó Scoil Chluain Chumhra mar a chuamair ar scoil. Thrácht Seán ar theacht na Sheridans ’on dúthaigh i ndeireadh samhraidh. An uair úd, bhíodh de nós ag roinnt d’fearaibh na dúiche cruinniú le chéile thall ag an nDroichead i ndeireadh lae. Cé ghaibh chucu an tráthnóna so ach John L. (Ó Súilleabháin) ó Pháirc an Fhia, agus é i gcruachás. Cad a bhí, ach suas le scór capall leis na Sheridans ag bradaíl ina ghort, An Bhuaile Iata, leathmhíle suas an bóthar óna thigh cónaithe. 5 Toisc nárbh í seo an chéad uair dá leithéid tarlúint, bhí deireadh na foighne aige John L. leo, agus bhí fé na capaill a thabhairt dtín bPóna i bPáirc an Aonaigh sa Daingean. Bhí cúnamh uaidh. Chuaigh triúr nó ceathrar ina theannta gan mhoill. I bhfocla Sheáin: ‘Bhí taithí mhaith ar chapaill agam, agus mar sin, do léimeas in airde ar chapall ciúin, agus b’sheo linn gan ceanrach ná diallait in aon streoillín amháin bun an Stricín siar a’ seachaint na Sheridans. Chonaic Jim Rohan ar ár slí anuas barra Shráid Eoin le coim na hoíche sinn, agus dúirt ná raibh aon oidhre orainn ach ‘The Flight into Egypt!’ Bhí sé ag tarrac ar mheánoíche agus Páirc an Aonaigh sroiste againn. Ghlaoigh John L. ar Tom ‘The Boy’ 6 as a chodladh chun geata an phóna d’oscailt dúinn. Dh’éirigh Tom, is nuair a bhuail sé amach chugainn sea thugamair fé ndeara go raibh a threabhsar taobh siar aniar air! Cuireadh na capaill i dtaisce sa phóna. Deireadh an scéil go raibh cúpla piúnt ar ár suaimhneas i dtabhairne Fred Sheehy againn. Fred fhéin a thug marcaíocht abhaile dúinn!’ Sin é, súil agam ná fuil paidir chapaill déanta agam dár scéal! Classic Custard Tart By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School For the Filling Turn the oven down to 125ºC. Add the cream and milk and vanilla (slit the vanilla pod with a small knife and let the seeds fall in to the liquid along with the vanilla pod) to a pot and place over medium heat. Bring this to a simmer. Place the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and whisk together. Remove the vanilla pod. Pour the hot liquid carefully over the egg yolk and sugar mixture. Gently pour this mixture into the tart. Grate a generous amount of nutmeg over the tart and bake this for 35 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave it for another 5-10 minutes. There is a good reason that classic desserts are incredible. Most of us are familiar with a lemon tart or chocolate tart, but sometimes we forget about this one, which is equally delicious. This is perfect for any occasion. Hope you love it.

Place this on a wire rack and allow it to cool before removing the tin. Bain Taitneamh As!!

MORAN'S Morans Tyre Centre

Annascaul Historical Society Two fundraising events will take place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. The second in a series of guided fundraising walks for the placement of inscribed flagstones in the upgraded footpath in the village takes place on Bank Holiday Monday June sixth.

Morans VTN

The society’s first walk on May second proved very popular. Starting at the old bridge John Hanafin kept his audience captive with a fascinating account of the web of life in our rural village over the past century. He described the village as a commercial hub boasting ten pubs and as many shops, there were shoemakers, tailors and bakers, all located in family homes. Farmers relied on the forge and fairs, the carpenters and harness makers to meet all their needs. The Palace Ballroom and a weekly film screened in Landers’s Garage provided entertainment. From the old bridge to the school every footstep holds secrets of the past soon to be reflected in the society’s project ‘Coisceim na Staire’.

The next walk on June 6 will explore the myths and legends, the history, folklore and natural beauty of the Loch Scáil area. The walk will once again be led by John Hanafin.

Registration and car-pooling will be at Hanafin’s at 10:45 am for an 11:30 start at the lake car park. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family. Supervision of children is especially important given the proximity of the car park to the lakeshore. The walk route extends from the car park to the Mass Rock and back. Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland The Dingle Peninsula had the pleasure and privilege to receive a ‘whistle stop’ visit of Congressman Richie Neal, Chairman of the US House Ways and Means Committee, and Congress Representatives, both Democrat and Republican, on their recent visit to Ireland, the UK and Brussels. The Congressman’s grandmother is from Ventry and his wish to have a little time in West Kerry reflects the powerful connection between here and Springfield, West Springfield and Western Mass. Acknowledging the importance of the Dingle Peninsula Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase at The Big E, he looks forward to seeing a return of the Dingle Peninsula Showcase to the New England Fair this September where he hopes to meet everyone again.

This exciting new Network is open to all sectors across the peninsula involved in food - farmers, fishers, food producers, chefs, hospitality, retailers, food tour guides, and all. Corca Dhuibhne Food Network’s vision: “Bia Dingle – Corca Dhuibhne Food Network is the dynamic, collaborative, food-focused association representing the whole of the Dingle Peninsula. We are Farmers; Fishers; Producers; Growers; Foragers; Chefs, Restaurateurs; Hosts; Guides; Partners; and Champions, joined in celebration of the food history and heritage of this precious place. We aspire to connect a love and respect for our place, our produce, our stories, and our language with the world in a more sustainable manner for the sake of progeny. The food, the land, and the culture of the Chorca Dhuibhne have a Blas – a taste - worth experiencing, a story worth hearing, and legacy worth preserving”. To connect with the Network and be a part of this new dynamic group, please contact dinglepeninsulafood@gmail.com or biachorcadhuibhne@gmail.com.

The Dingle Peninsula has also been welcoming students from Coláistí Chorca Dhuibhne spring courses: Coláiste Mhuire Gan Smál, Coláiste Mhuire Marino, Coláiste Froebel and Coláiste Mhuire Gan Smál- Campas Phádraig Dúrla. Combined with the students from Sacred Heart University spring and summer semesters, we hope they all have had or are having a wonderful experience while they are here and will become lifelong friends and visitors of Corca Dhuibhne. Tá fáilte roimhe.

Our Sustainable Tourism Journey continues……. What is Biodiversity?

Nuashonruithe ó Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne / Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (CTCD/DPTA):

Put simply, Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. It is essential for sustaining the natural living systems or ecosystems that provide us with food, clean water, fuel, health, wealth, and other services we take for granted in our everyday life - https://biodiversityweek.ie/what-is-biodiversity/

Plans are now underway for the Dingle Peninsula Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase at The Big E. For those who might be interested in joining the local Big E team, please contact Caroline at dptalliance@gmail. com. Summer Availability: get your availability in to Simone at dinglept@gmail. com . Enquiries are always coming in to the office so keep in touch with your late availability so that the team can connect you to new bookings. Nuacht ó Chorca Dhuibhne Food Network Corca Dhuibhne Food Network recently announced its new Committee at the last training module of NEWKD’s “Developing a Sustainable Food Branding Strategy for the Dingle Peninsula” Programme. The Committee includes Trevis Gleason, Cathaoirleach, Mai Uí Bhruic, Leath Cathaoirleach, Niamh O’Kennedy, PRO, Dónal Moriarty, Leath PRO, Brigid O’Connor, Bio District Representative, Pat O’Shea, Agency Representative, Sheelagh Smyth and Jessica McCannon, Events, Trails and Attractions, and Eileen Ashe, Food Producers and Education.

“Biodiversity underpins the functioning of the ecosystems on which we depend for food and fresh water, health and recreation, and protection from natural disasters. Its loss also affects us culturally and spiritually. This may be more difficult to quantify, but is nonetheless integral to our wellbeing” – Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations.

Léargas an Lae le Louise Nic an tSionnaigh

le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne – Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar Caithfidh mé tús a chur leis an alt seo le ráiteas; meabhrúchán i ndáiríre; mar a dúras sa chéad alt a scríobhas do, “West Kerry Live,” ní ón nGaeltacht mé, agus nílim cáilithe(!) le bheith ag caint ar son na Gaeltachta. Níl éinne, is dócha, ach d’fhéadfá teacht ar dhuine le i bhfad níos mó taithí ar chúrsaí Gaeltachta agus Gaelainne ná mise. Ach seo deis tuairim a nochtadh. Agus tuigim go mbíonn daoine braon de bheith ag cabaireacht faoin nGaelainn as Gaelainn nó Béarla, ach is ábhar cainte é, cosúil le hábhar ar bith eile. Bhí píosa ar chlár Bhrendan O’Connor le déanaí faoin scannán iomráiteach, “An Cailín Ciúin.” Bhí Brendan agus Ray Cuddihy, láithreoir teilifíse agus raidió, á phlé, agus an, “Ré Órga,” atá ann don dteanga fé láthair (sna healaíona ach go h-áirithe), le scannáin mar seo agus, “Arracht,” ag teacht amach. N’fheadar fé sin. Bhí Ray ag rá go spreagann cruthaitheacht an tsamhlaíocht, agus dá bhrí sin, má tá rudaí cruthaithe as Gaelainn, beidh daoine in ann níos mó rudaí a shamhlú trí mheán na Gaelainne – fiú daoine nach bhfuil sí ar a dtoil acu. Aontaím leis sin – d’aon ábhar. Sampla bídeach ná nuair a bhíos sa bhunscoil, bhí sé i bhfad níos éasca amhrán a fhoghlaim ag dul tríd na táblaí (sa mata) ná iad a fhoghlaim do ghlanmheabhair. Dúirt Brendan gur fhoghlaim sé an Ghaelainn mar theanga, “marbh.” Má bhreathnítear ar teanga mar rud beo bríomhar, le rudaí nua éisithe tríthí, inti agus uaithi, mar atá ag tarlúint le, “An Cailín Ciúin,” ní teanga marbh í, buíochas le Dia. Tá an-chuid slite taithí na Gaelainne a fháil na laethanta seo; éisteacht léi, féachaint uirthi, í a léamh, agus mar sin de. Mar shampla, tá cláracha agus láithreoirí ar Raidió a hAon a mheascann Béarla agus Gaelainn (“Folk On One,” le Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh; “Late Date,” le Sinéad Ní Uallacháin); rud a chuireann an teanga os comhair an phobail i slí atá éasca teacht uirthi. Má chloiseann daoine Gaelainn minic go leor, iompaíonn sí ina gnáth-rud do gach éinne; ní don nGaeltacht amháin. Tá ceoltóirí a úsáideann Gaelainn go forleathan chomh maith; mar shampla, Fontaines D.C. (luaite ar seó Bhrendan O’Connor), Ye Vagabonds, Kíla, gan dabht, agus – i measc go leor leor eile – Síomha. Chonaic mé an t-amhránaí seo le déanaí sa Green Room sa Daingean. An rud ba suntasaí fúithi – seachas an guth dochreidte agus stíl iontach – ná an slí gur thosaigh sí ag canadh as Gaelainn do slua measctha, gan ceist a chur an raibh éinne le Gaelainn nó gan Gaelainn, agus gan míniú nó leithscéal; bhí an teanga díreach ann; simplí; nádúrtha. Ansan tá na stáisiún raidió ar fad a chraolann as Gaelainn, na podcraoltaí (“Beo Ar Éigean,” agus, “GaelGals,” mar shamplaí), leabhair, TG4, Fibín, tuairisc.ie, Féile na nGealaí, an tOireachtas, agus i bhfad níos mó rudaí, “Cruthaitheacha,” nach iad, a fheidhmíonn trí Ghaelainn agus a thugann spiorad agus croí do mhuintir na Gaelainne, agus a thugann deis do dhaoine eile í a fhoghlaim. Bíonn go leor grúpaí deonacha áitiúla a chuireann ócáidí le chéile as Gaelainn (Aisteoirí Bhréanainn mar shampla amháin timpeall na háite seo), agus áiteanna ar fud na tíre a thugann ardán di (amharclainne éagsúla, mar shampla). Táimid loite i ndáiríre; tá éileamh ar rudaí atá cruthaithe as Gaelainn, agus is iontach an rud é sin.

Ach caithfear í a úsáid go laethúil chomh maith. Nílimid ag iarraidh go mbeidh an Ghaelainn mar theanga ealaíonta amháin, nó go mbeidh daoine ag rá, “Oh, she’s so creative – she even speaks Irish!”. Nílimid ag iarradh go mbeidh, “Ré órga,” ann don nGaelainn, agus ansan nuair atá sé thart, go mbogann daoine ar aghaidh. Thug Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe €2,000 don Taibhdearc i mbliana as an €20,000 a lorgaíodar, agus as an €400,000 ar fad a bhí ag an gcomhairle sa bhuiséid dos na healaíona. Más, “Ré órga,” é seo, ní theastaíonn uaim a fheiscint cad a tharlaíonn ina dhiaidh san! Sin an chúis go bhfuil sé tábhachtach an Gaelainn a choimeád beo i ngach slí; sna scoileanna, ar an mbóthar, sa siopa, sa teach tábhairne, sa chaifé, sa leabharlann, le daoine óga agus iad óg ina gcroíthe – gach áit agus gach saghas duine. Fiú le mo ghadhar cúpla lá ó shin; shiúil sé trasna an bóthar gan choinne. Bhéiceas, “Anseo! Dána,” agus mic léinn Coláiste Mhuire Gan Smál ag féachaint orm le miongháire orthu. Nó an caifé Plámás sa Ghaillimh, atá ag tabhairt lascaine d’éinne a ordaíonn deoch as Gaelainn. Ní eiseamláirí ceachtar againne, ach díreach sin sampla conas an Ghaelainn a choimeád sa chluas sa ghnáth-saol. Is féidir cruthaitheach agus an tsamhlaíocht a úsáid léi agus gan bheith bainte leis na h-ealaíona. Chomh maith leis na heagraíochtaí agus grúpaí thuasluaite ar fad, má úsáidimid fiú cúpla focal sa bhreis gach lá, déanann sé difríocht. Mar a mhol Ray Cuddihy, úsáid an tsamhlaíocht chun teacht suas le slíte nua. Ní fiú teanga nach bhfuil marbh ach nach gcloiseann ach mionlach an-bheag, nó na haicmí arda. Coimeádfaimid cruthaitheach í; coimeádfaimid beo í; coimeádfaimid sa tsiúl í.

Novecento Pizzeria Main Street, Dingle With just 212 days left to Christmas, members of the Kerry Hospice Foundation are busy planning and preparing for the launch of their eagerly awaited, and much in demand, creative Christmas cards. This year they are enlisting the help of the Kerry public to come up with creative designs for the unique collection of cards which are a major strand of funding for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “Kerry Hospice Foundation is looking for your ideas for our annual Christmas Card pack. All artists from around the county are invited to submit paintings of Christmas and we are open to your interpretation of what Christmas is for you. As a guideline we might suggest something on the lines of winter country scenes, busy street scenes, some famous landmarks from around the county all with a Christmas theme,” said Ursula O’Connell from the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

Cromane News Jane Casey Cromane GAA SENIORS: County League Division 4 (round 7): Cromane 3-10, Scartaglin 2-8 Cromane picked up their third win in Division 4 of the county league last Sunday afternoon after a tough battle with Scartaglin. A goal blitz midway through the second half sealed the three-pointers from Cathal Crosby (37th minute), Mikey Houlihan (51st minute), and Darragh McKeefry (53rd minute) proving decisive. Cromane started playing into a driving breeze but controlled matters in the first 15 minutes, building up a 0-5 to nil lead with points from Sean O’Sullivan (two), Darren Houlihan (two) and a lovely effort from wing-back Ethan Griffin. However, Scartaglin slowly crept back into the match and were level by the 22nd minute when full-forward Eddie Horan converted a penalty (0-5 to 1-2). The visitors to Cromane then took over with a series of Eddie Horan scores, from play and frees, to lead by two at the break (1-5 to 0-6). Cromane turned around with the aid of that breeze but struggled to make it count. We trailed by three (1-6 to 0-6) when Darren Houlihan converted his third free of the afternoon. Then came the spark that ignited the team: Cathal Crosby pounced a loose ball, jinked around one man, and planted a superb shot into the top corner. Scartaglin did draw level again with 12 minutes remaining but the goals started to flow with Mikey Houlihan, who palmed home after great work by McKeefry, and Darragh McKeefry, who finished a move that pounced on an error in the Scartaglin backs, both finding the net. When Sean O’Sullivan soon after kicked his fourth point of the game we led 3-9 to 1-7 with just four minutes left. We looked home and hosed but a late Scartaglin goal from Eddie Horan (returning to the field after a black card stint on the sidelines) left it a little too close for comfort. A late point from Darragh McKeefry closed out the Cromane scoring to give us our third win of the county league. Next up is an away game against Knocknagoshel on Sunday, June 5.

Bhuailtí daoine óga nó ainmhithe le maide beithe chun go mbeidís torthúil. Is minic a luaitear an bheith le cúrsaí grá i seanchas na gCeilteach. Le seachtainí anuas táimid tar éis a bheith ag caint ar na crainn ab uaisle sa tír seo, dar leis na sean-Ghaeil. Seacht gcinn desna crannaíocha sin a bhí ann – an dair, an coll, an cuileann, an t-iúr, an fhuinseog, an ghiúis agus an t-úll. Leiríodh ana-ómós ar fad dosna crainn chéanna. Aithig Fedo a thugtaí ar an gcéad aicme eile i measc na gcrann agus ba lú an píonós a ghearrtaí ar an té do bhaineadh leo. Agus b’shin iad an bheith, an fhearnóg, an tsaileach, an chaorthainn agus an sceach gheal, an leamhan agus an crann silíní. Caora amháin a lórgófaí mar phíonós ón té a bhainfeadh craobh agus dhá bhó bainne ón té a leagfadh an crann. Tá teist na háilleachta ar an mbeith. Tá sí ard grástúil agus aithnítear í as an dath geal bán ar a coirt. Bíonn an duilliúr ag sileadh leis ón gcrann. Siombal na breithe agus na hathnuachana, na hóige, an ghrá agus na geanmnaíochta í. Féile na Bealtaine 2022 Las bladhm na Bealtaine tír agus talamh ó Cheann Sratha ó dheas go Com a’ Lochaigh ó thuaidh, soir chomh fada le hAbhainn an Scáil agus thar n-ais arís. Tugann an fhéile iontais an linbh nuabheirhte léithe, ní chodlaíonn sí agus deineann sí a dhá dóthain torainn. We never know exactly how it will work, never quite sure if all will fall into place or fall into pieces. Féile na Bealtaine roared out of a covid induced coma of two years and kicked off the summer with an abundance of all that is magnificent about the Dingle Peninsula. We sang, danced, laughed, cried, listened, walked, talked and were provoked over six memorable days. Ceiliúradh í an fhéile ar joie de vivre na muintire agus na gcuairteoirí, macalla de ré na bpagánach atá fós follasach ar an leithinis draíochta. Thank you to those who gave so generously of their time, energy, venues and values. To the wonderful artists and participants from home and further afield who went on stage and provided us with heart stopping moments. To the generous audiences throughout the peninsula who put their faith in us and got out and attended events in halls, hills and hidden locations. We are very grateful to those who sponsor us: the Arts Council, Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Foras na Gaeilge, Kerry Co. Co., local businesses and individuals. We are already planning Féile na Bealtaine 2023. We are always looking for people to help, always seeking out new ideas and innovative ways to improve the festival. Féile na Bealtaine works because it receives the support of all sectors and all age groups within the community thank you and well done. Go raibh samhradh lasmhar agaibh agus go mbeirimid beo ar an am seo arís. - Organising Committee of Féile na Bealtaine.

Film Review: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Tom Ó Neachtain Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the most recent entry into the rapidly-expanding MCU. This film focuses on the ingenious scifi concept explored in many re cent blockbusters - the Multiverse. The plot centres on sorcerer Steven Strange, as he tries to protect the multiversal-anomaly America Chavez, all-thewhile travelling through multiple distinct and unimaginable universes. The central idea behind the Multiverse, that of an infinite amount of alternate universes existing simultaneously, offers boundless storytelling potential. Fortunately, this film successfully delivers on the wildly creative spectacle that its title would suggest. This film also functions as director Sam Raimi’s long-awaited return to Hollywood film-making, and the visual charm and energy of his previous efforts are onceagain present here. The higher-ups at the MCU have an unfortunate history of keeping full

creative control from directors, but Raimi’s vision and style seem mostly uncompromised here, and the film benefits hugely from this.

One of this film’s best attributes is its clever re-tooling of the predictable superhero\villain dynamic, which sends the film into unexplored territory for the MCU. Composer Danny Elfman delivers one of his most creative and abstract film-scores yet, managing to add tension and drama to the film’s truly barmy plot. Raimi’s influence is felt in the film’s tone as well, which is more camp and unapologetically over-thetop than any previous MCU title. This tonal shift gives this film a distinct personality, but robs the film of potential dramatic heft in certain scenes. Sadly, the central problem here is the poorly constructed plot. It moves at such a lightning-fast pace that very little time is given to establishing the film’s stakes or character dynamics. The huge scale of the narrative, and the visually breath-taking setpieces, help to distract from the weak story at the film’s core, but this problem only worsens as the film progresses. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’s sloppy script and overly-campy tone will

bother some more than others, but it is a mostly enjoyable and wildly imaginative trip across the Multiverse. Tom Ó Neachtain is a third year student in Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne

Legacy Of Violence A History Of The British Empire le

Caroline Elkins ‘Caroline Elkins made front-page headlines a decade ago when her research into Britain’s brutal suppression of the Mau Mau movement in Kenya in the 1950s resulted in a high court case and, uniquely, reparations to 5,228 surviving Kenyans who, the British government accepted, had been subject to years of systematic torture and abuse. That case relied on evidence uncovered in Elkins’s 2005 book, Britain’s Gulag, which had argued that up to 320,000 Kenyan Kikuyu people had been held in British detention camps as part of a campaign of terror that ‘left tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, dead’ and untold numbers of lives ruined by forced labour, starvation, torture and rape... This book, a decade on, is that wider history that Elkins had postponed. Partly resting on the Hanslope Park files, it argues that the sadistic methods that marked the last acts of empire in Kenya were not an anomalous aberration but learned behaviours of imperial power. Her detailing of this reality involves a deconstruction not only of the selfdelusion, seductive mythology and doublespeak of the largest empire in human history, but also the deliberate official destruction of large parts of its historical record. She coins the term ‘legalised lawlessness’ to describe how Britain spread the rule of law.’ - Tim Adams An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá an aimsir gan a bheith thar mholadh beirte, ach tá cúrsaí CLG agus na foirne caide agus iomána ag baint na gcos dá chéile. Ar an nDomhnach seo caite bhuaidh iománaithe na Gaillimhe gan mórán dua ar iománaithe Bhleá Cliath. Cé gur thosnaigh Corcaigh bacach go maith sna chéad chluichí iomána dheineadar rabach ar Phort Láirge ar an nDomnach seo caite. Tá teipithe ar Thiobrad Árann i mbliana ach beidh siad siúd ar ais an bhliain seo chugainn. Tá aiséiri ar fhoireann Loch Garman a bhain an bonn ó fhoireann Chill Choinnigh an deireadh seachtaine seo caite. I mbarr na sraithe tá Luimneach agus An Clár. Bhuaidh an Clár go faoibíneach ar na Tiobradaigh agus an draíodóir, Tóní ó Ceallaigh á spárail acu. Dar liom gur ceann don dá fhoireann seo a bhuafaidh craobh na hÉireann agus Corn Mac Cárthaigh. Beidh an dá fhoireann cois Sionna á fhéachaint le chéile i ndeireadh an lae. Croth do sparán. Laoch Bhí an ceart ag Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh Banraíon caide na mBan gearán a dhéanamh go mbíonn an sár láthair spoirt sa Churrach ceilte uaireanta ar fhoireann caide ban Chiarraí. Níl aon teora le Louise atá ag imirt le Ciarraí le cúig bliana déag. Is dóigh liom gur ghnóthaigh sí 3 bháide agus 37 poinnte sa tsraith chomórtas níos luaithe i mbliana.Tá Louise cruaidh ceolmhar, cruinn agus go diail ar an ionsaí- isteach díreach más féidir. Táimíd go léir mórálach aisti. Laochra Nár bhuaidh Cailiní óga Chiarraí, Craobh na hÉireann fé 14 bliana déag an Domhnach seo caite. Bhí triúr ón nGaeltacht ar an bhfoireann, Sadhbh Ní Shlatarra, Éabha Ní Shiúrdáin agus Sibéal Ní Shé agus beirt ón nDaingean. Níl aon teora leo - tús maith. Comhgháirdeas leo. Aiste. Comhgháirdeas le Antoine Óg Ó Sé ó Ard na Caithne a bhuaidh duais náisiúnta as aiste Gaolainne. Tá Antoine sa cuigiú bliain i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. Ina thosach atá sé. Fáilte Cuireadh fáilte mhór roimh an Ionadaí Meiriceánach Richard – Richie Neal i láthair Fondúireachta an Bhlascaoid ar an nDomhnach. Bhíos ag caint leis agus mholas é as a raibh déanta agus á dhéanamh aige do chúiseanna na hÉireann, ag áireamh maidir leis an chleasaíocht atá ar bun ag Rialtas Caomhach Shasana. Dúirt Nansí Pelosí, Daonlaitheach ceannaire Tigh na n-Ionadaithe, go stopfadh Meiriceá thrádáil le Sasana mura seasóidis leis an gConradh ídirnáisiúnta fés na Sé Chontae. Chuir Richie agus gasra ochtar measaim ó Mheiriceá a gcás sa Bhruiséal agus i Sasana agus ansan ghlacadar sos i gCorca Dhuibhne mar a dtugadar turas ar Aonad an Bhlascaoid i nDún Chaoin agus maithe na poilitiochta i láthair mar an Comharleoir Contae Breandán Mac Gearailt, Johnny Wall, an t- aire Oideachais Norma Foley agus Mark Ó Dálaigh, Cathaoirleach Seanad Éireann. Marc a eagraigh turas Neal agus a chompánaigh ó thosach deireadh. Is iontach an fear Mark. Bhí greim le n-ithe ag an ngasra i mblialann Uí Fhiannachta Oíche Dé Domhnaigh mar a raibh Breandán Ó Beaglaoi, sár cheoltóir, Sláine Ní Chathalláin sár amhránaí agus Philip King sár chainteoir le fíor bhlas fháilteach a chur i roimh a gcáirde Meiriceánach. Is maith iad.

Bás Ar an 22 lá do Bhealtaine fuair Pádraig Ó Laoithe ó Imeall Áth bás in aois daichead a trí bliain. Fuair sé bás ar lá chomóradh a lá breithe. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Valerie, a chlann Jim agus Ciara, dá dheartháracha Tadhg, Séamus, Seán agus Mícheál, dá dheirfiúr Siobhán, dá uncailí Jim agus Seán agus dá aintín Peigí, dá dhaoine muinteartha, nianna neachtanna dá ghaolta a chomharsain agus a chairde.
