All you need to do is pledge an area of green space for pollinators, by committing to one or more simple actions such as:
•
Don’t mow, let it grow (mow every 4-6 weeks to allow clover & other native flowers to bloom)
•
Don’t spray – the overuse of herbicides is making it difficult for pollinators to find flowers for food
•
Choose Pollinator friendly bedding plants (Begonias, Petunias and Busy lizzies don’t provide food for bees and insects – try Catmint, Bugle, Calendula)
•
Sign up to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan where you can also find out more ideas and information

Don’t Let Exam Stress Let You Down! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
The most available source comes from high quality organic green tea which can be further enhanced by adding some lemon balm leaves to the brew. This timely tonic can be consumed hot or cooled, alternating with fresh water throughout the day as hydration is also critical to exam performance and concentration. Another amino acid, glycine, plays an important role in the sleep cycle. Sleep allows for recovery and repair after a stress event such as exams and allows the brain to process information making it easier to access and recall when needed. Glycine, while available as a supplement, usually as Magnesium Bisglycinate, it is also derived from natural food sources such as meat, fish and poultry. Bone broth is an excellent source as the glycine, ready to be absorbed from the liquid stock. Vitamin C from fresh, raw fruits and vegetables helps to replenish adrenal glands and give them a pick-me-up when feeling exhausted. Snacking on fresh strawberries, citrus fruits and salad vegetables is a sure-way to keep a steady supply of this vital nutrient. Also needed for the absorption of iron, of which low levels can be attributed to fatigue and tiredness.
Students, whether the work was done in the last week, month or year, your exam performance comes down to what happens on the day. While it is not the perfect system to evaluate someone’s level of academic competence, it is happening now and hopefully you are well prepared and ready for it! Stress is a natural response to the demands of sitting exams but too much stress and high anxiety levels can have a negative effect on getting what is in your head onto the paper in front of you within the allotted time. Our stress response has been with us for as long as we have lived on the planet and is probably the reason why we are still here, however, the triggers for our “fight or flight” activity and our ability to recover has changed dramatically since we first needed to fight or flee. What was deemed to be a physical threat (real stress) to our survival millions of years ago such as wild animals and natural disasters were rare events allowing us time to process and recover from stressful times. Nowadays, our stress response is being constantly activated by perceived stresses, such as exams, deadlines, mayhem and madness with little time for recovery or repair. This has seen stress-related illnesses and anxiety rates soar, ironically leaving us more vulnerable to a real threat to our survival! It is not too late to support a healthy stress response and the following tips may result in clearer thinking, sharper problem solving and excellent recall during exam time. Magnesium is often referred to as Nature’s tranquilizer – not the kind that would knock a horse, but interestingly abundant in the grass they eat! For us, magnesium is lacking in our diets yet is in high demand during times of stress. It can relax tense muscles, dilate blood vessels for easier flow of oxygen to the brain and has a calming effect on neurotransmission, allowing for clearer thinking and rational thinking. Magnesium is found in all leafy vegetables such as dark lettuce leaves, chard and spinach. Also, high in pumpkin seeds and almonds. Supplements can deliver a high therapeutic dose of magnesium in times of stress and are more bioavailable in powdered form as magnesium (bis)glycinate and magnesium citrate. B- vitamins, are a family of water-soluble vitamins that work together to perform many functions in the body and vitally important for the nervous system. Again, this group of nutrients have been refined out of the modern diets yet are needed by the bucket load in times of high stress. Vitamin B5 is of particular importance for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands and the balanced production of stress hormones. They are typically found in fresh wholefoods – wholegrains, lentils, pulses, lean red meat, fish and liver. Enhance the availability of B vitamins by combining these foods with enzyme-rich salads, steamed greens, watercress or beansprouts. Viridian Supplement High-5 B-Complex is a good add-on to a healthy diet during these stressful times. A lesser-known nutrient, L-Theanine, is responsible for calming and soothing the nervous system without affecting the thought process. 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
The last thing you want to add to your stress levels is more stress! Junk food, caffeine, stimulants, poor sleep, the news, social media and poor planning are the kind of stressors that can put you at risk of “overload” and anxiety, which will impede your exam performance. Between exams and during down times, take time to recover and repair in a calm and quiet environment. Preparing good food, proper sleep, time spent outdoors in nature may seem like a waste of valuable revision time yet is necessary for you to take advantage of the heightened clarity that comes with a well-managed stress response! Best of luck to all students sitting exams, go n-eirí libh go léir! Farming News Louis Murchan THINK SAFETY WHEN ENJOYING THE COUNTRYSIDE THIS SUMMER Ahead of a busy summer schedule, and following the June Bank Holiday farmers (and all countryside users in fact) are asked to be extra vigilant during the summer months. Summer is one of the busiest times of year on farms. It is important that, as school holidays begin and the countryside gets busier over the summer months, safety is foremost in everyone’s mind. With a notable increase in the number of tractors and large machinery moving on public roads, the Minister reminded farmers and contractors of the dangers around activities such as silage making and slurry spreading. He recommended that contractors and farmers discuss and plan all safety aspects before the work commences, not only in the farmyard and fields but also on the roads. The Irish countryside is a wonderful resource on our doorsteps. It is great to see people enjoying the beautiful scenery, fresh air and the many amenities. Locals and visitors are asked to be conscious of agricultural activities at this time of year and to be accommodating to farmers. Farmers are also asked to be cognisant of the danger of driving heavy machinery, especially on narrow country roads. Some of these modern tractors are capable of reaching speeds of 50 miles per hour (80km/h), and anyone who travels at this speed with a twenty-tonne load of silage, etc may be guilty of manslaughter. Farmers have that responsibility to care for others on our roads. Walkers, cyclists, motorists and horse riders taking advantage of the fine weather may not be aware of the risks posed by machinery. Farmers should check that there are good lines of sight while accessing public roads from yards and fields. Tractors with front loaders pose a particular danger. Warning signs and cones should be used on road verges at entrances to alert other road users of machinery moving in the area. Any debris or soil brought onto a public road by machinery should be removed as soon as possible as it could cause a vehicle to lose control. Farm animals are not pets and fields with livestock should be avoided. Pet dogs are an extension of our families but they should always be on a lead while visiting the countryside so that livestock or wildlife are not disturbed. If we all work together with patience and cooperation, we can help ensure a safe summer for all. FARM VEHICLES NOW WEIGH ALMOST AS MUCH AS HEAVIEST DINOSAURS What does a modern combine harvester and a Diplodocus have in common? The answer may be their big footprints on the soil. A new study led by researchers from Sweden and Switzerland has found that the weight of farming machinery today is approaching that of the largest animals to have ever roamed the Earth – the sauropods. Depicted as the giant, friendly “veggiesaurus” in the movie Jurassic Park, sauropods were the biggest of the dinosaurs. The heaviest were thought to weigh in at around 60 tonnes – similar to the weight of a fully laden combine harvester. Tractors and other machinery used on farms have grown enormously heavier over the past 60 years as intensive, large-scale agriculture has become widespread. A combine harvester is almost ten times heavier today than it was in the 1960s. The weight of animals or machines matters because soils can only withstand so much pressure before they become chronically compacted. They may not look it, but soils are ecosystems containing fragile structures – pores and pathways which allow air to circulate and water to reach plant roots and other organisms. Tyres, animal hooves and human feet all apply pressure, squashing the pores, not just at the surface but deeper down too. Soil compaction can cut plant growth and harvests, and increase the risk of floods as water runs off the land and reaches waterways more quickly. The scientists involved in the new study took a look at how much compaction is being caused by these giant farming machines and compared it with the sauropods who lived over 66 million years ago. They found both to be big culprits of compaction. 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
The study points out that as the weight of farm machinery has grown, tyre sizes have ballooned too, adjusting the area of contact between the vehicle with the soil to reduce the pressure on the surface and help avoid sinking. It seems that animals evolved with a similar strategy – increasing foot size with weight to help avoid sinking into the soil. Overall, pressure at the soil surface has remained fairly constant as farm machinery has gained weight. But the authors suggest that stresses on the soil continue to increase below the surface and penetrate deeper as vehicles (or animals) get heavier. Farm machinery today (and the sauropods of the past) are now so heavy that they irreparably compact soil below the first 20 cm, where it isn’t tilled. Aside from restricting how deep the roots of crops can grow to seek water and nutrients further down in the soil, this can also create low-oxygen conditions that are not good for plants or the organisms they share the soil with. This creates a “sauropod paradox”, as the researchers call it. The dinosaurs and the loads transmitted through their feet were so large that they would have likely caused significant subsurface damage to soils wherever they roamed, potentially destroying the soil’s ability to support the plants and ecosystems they would have relied on as their food source. The image of sauropods roaming widely and foraging freely as depicted by Jurassic Park seems unlikely, as they would have had an unsustainable influence on their environment. So how did they survive? The scientists behind the study speculate that they may have kept to well-trodden paths, limiting their impact while browsing the canopy with their long necks. How exactly a sauropod could live in equilibrium with the soil remains a mystery for now A more pressing conundrum is how to reconcile soil compaction by farming vehicles with sustainable food production today. The risk of soil compaction varies with the type of machinery and the way it’s used, as well as the type of soil and the moisture bound up in it. The study estimates that 20% of croplands globally are at high risk of losing productivity because of subsoil compaction by modern agricultural vehicles, with the highest risks in Europe and North America where it’s relatively moist and there are more large farms using the largest machines. Clearly, this is an issue in arable landscapes, but the problem also extends to grasslands where silage is baled, and urban landscapes where the movement of construction vehicles on green space is not well controlled. The authors call for design changes to machinery to help maintain the soil’s structure. We suggest another option. To reduce their impact on the soil, we could reduce the need for such large machines in the first place by growing food using smaller machines on smaller parcels of land, particularly in high-risk zones. Finding ways to break up vast monoculture landscapes makes sense for many other reasons. For example, wildflower field margins, hedgerows and trees can help sequester carbon, manage water quality and support biodiversity. Soil can only withstand so much pressure – whether from compaction or other threats such as continual harvesting, erosion or pollution. Humans must act to reduce pressures on soils, or we risk going the way of the dinosaurs. From theconversation.com PILOT FISHING GEAR RETIREMENT SCHEME To mark World Oceans on 8th June 2022, DAFM announced a Clean Oceans Initiative Fishing Gear Retirement Scheme. This new initiative, which is aimed at collecting old and damaged fishing gear, is to take place this autumn. The pilot project is being led by BIM – The Fisheries Development Authority, as part of its Clean Oceans Initiative, established in 2019, to address the growing problem of plastics and other waste in our oceans. To date, almost 600 tonnes of waste has been hauled up in nets by fishermen, etc during a series of pier and shore clean-ups as part of this European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund supported initiative. The livelihoods of many of those living in Ireland’s coastal communities rely on having a clean, pollution free, marine environment: The Clean Oceans Initiative Fishing Gear Retirement Scheme is being piloted in Rossaveal, Co Galway later this year. Fishers from the Rossaveal fleet are being invited to dispose of their old and damaged gear as part of a free drop-off service at the pier. The fishing gear will then be recycled, upcycled, or disposed of in a responsible manner. Vessel owners will be
asked to register details of the materials they drop off to record their origin and allow BIM to track how they are used in the future.
€2.8 MILLION PACKAGE TO SUPPORT IRISH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE GROWERS
BPS PRELIMINARY CHECK NOTICE
The Horticulture Exceptional Payment Scheme is now open whereby support is being provided to the Irish horticulture sector, with an aid package of €2.8 million for eligible growers. This will be funded from Irish and EU funding and is hoped that it will alleviate the negative impact of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Notifications for the Preliminary checks under the 2022 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) are now issuing to farmers. These will identify any overclaims, overlaps or dual claims in respect of online BPS applications. Notifications are issued where the department finds such an error on the farmer’s 2022 BPS application. The notification allows the farmer the opportunity to rectify these issues without penalty. Farmers and advisors should check the correspondence section of their BPS online account. Where a farmer is signed up for text message alerts, a text will issue to advise them that they have a notification on their BPS account.
In recent times the horticulture sector has been experiencing significant challenges. What's Happening in The Hub? Ag teacht le chéile Remote Workers Get Together Ba mhaith linn dul i dteagmháil le daoine atá ag obair ón mbaile timpeall Chorca Dhuibhne agus a fháil amach conas gur féidir linn tacú leis an bpobal seo atá ag méadú an t-am ar fad. Táimíd ‘ar turas’ chun sibhse a aimsiú agus chun cuidiú leis na comharsana cianda seo aithne a chur ar a chéile. We want to connect with people who are working from home around the Peninsula and see how we can support this growing community. We are ‘on tour’ to find out where you are and bring together your local remote neighbours. Caint, caife agus craic i gCeann Trá We recently convened locals from around Ceann Trá / Ventry where we were hosted by Quinn's Bar / Tigh Uí Chuinn and Siopa Uí Lúing / Ventry Post Office, who provided some lovely homemade snacks. We will be in Castlegregory in the covered courtyard of Moe’s Café on the last day of June! Drop in for a coffee and chat the morning of June 30th. Make a note of the date now so you don’t forget and let other remote workers near Castlegregory know to join as well. We know there are lots of people working this way so if you think that there is demand for a similar get together in your area, please drop a note to info@dinglehub.com (Subject: Coffee Morning) or call us. It will be great to connect these communities and get a better picture of who is working where, what they do and want! Keep an eye on our social media for future events. Beidh sé fíor-dheas na pobail seo a chur i dteagmháil lena chéile agus beidh sé cabhrach dúinn dar ndóigh a fháil amach cá bhfuil na daoine seo, cad atá ar siúl acu agus cad atá ag teastáil uathu! Bígí ag faire amach le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais faoin maidin chaifé agus faoi imeachtaí eile amach anseo. Rince sa Hub / Dance Workshop Next month, we are pleased to accommodate a public workshop with Irish dance expert Kelsey Jean Schuhle. Not only is she a professional dancer but is also about to complete her PhD, where she has researched the art of decluttering/ balancing the dance. She has been teaching dancers at the University of Limerick for several years and is now offering a special session in Dingle. Kelsey’s percussive choreography differs from the kind of Irish dance seen in competitive and commercial scenes. She wants to give an opportunity for others to learn this other style, which she demonstrates through videos on her website. The session is suited to competent dancers (from any genre) who are interested in learning her steps. Choose your workshops from either July 2nd and 3rd (10am - 3pm). Cost: €75.

We recently convened locals from around Ceann Trá / Ventry where we were hosted by Quinn's Bar / Tigh Uí Chuinn and Siopa Uí Lúing / Ventry Post Office, who provided some lovely homemade snacks. These went down very well with the remote workers who took time-out to get to know others in the same boat as themselves: working from home. A wide cross-section of job-types and industries were represented as people explained what they do for a living and gave their experiences of working from home, with some mentioning that they lack the social aspect of being in a workplace. These local get-togethers can help as a social outlet, as workers get to know others who are nearby. Topics ranged wildly from monitoring honey-bees, Public Transport (both within and to leave Dingle Peninsula) to the importance of local food! We all learnt something new, and we were also able to link up some people that we met with others on the Peninsula who offer a suitable service or can provide advice on their projects. Synergies like this is another great benefit of 16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon
SPINSTERS There are numerous occupations associated with the wool trade such as carding, weaving and spinning. The 1901 Census recorded eight ‘spinsters’ in West Kerry. The term ‘spinster’ has been in use for hundreds of years and originally described women who made a living by spinning wool. Later it became a derogatory label, along with ‘Old Maid’ for women who were beyond marriageable age. Later still it became a standard term in official and legal documents such as Wills to describe unmarried women. Unmarried men never had to endure such a demeaning label and sailed through life as happy, carefree bachelors. Inch East
In this issue we take a look at the shepherds and associated occupations recorded in the Census, from Camp to the Blaskets, which was taken on Sunday 31 March, 1901. SHEPHERDS Inishvickillaun There were eight shepherds recorded on the peninsula in 1901 and one of them could claim to be the most westerly shepherd in Europe. He was Maurice Daly, 72, who lived in the only house on Inishvickillaun with his wife Catherine, 58, and their three sons, Patrick, John and Maurice. The sons gave their occupations as ‘Fisherman’ and the five family members declared that they could not read or write. That declaration is probably misleading because they were native Irish speakers, with little or no English probably, and were required to complete the Census form which was printed in English only. Their declaration could have meant they could not read or write English. Ballymacadoyle Moving east towards Dingle we find Joseph Garvey, a widower aged 60, living in Ballymacadoyle (Burnham) who recorded his occupation as ‘Shepherd’ on the Census form. His daughter Ellen, 23, and son Timothy, 21, were living with him but did not record an occupation.
It seems that the term ‘spinster’ - meaning a wool spinner – was still in use in West Kerry in 1901. Six of the area’s eight spinsters were recorded in Inch East. Kate Griffin, aged 40 and a widow, was a lodger in the home of Michael and Mary Garvey. Ellie Foley, 23, and her sisters Nora, 21, and Hannah, 20, all recorded their occupations as ‘Spinster’. Ellie Farrell, 15, and her sister Johanna, 14, were the youngest recorded spinsters. Their father, Michael, was a blacksmith. Castlegregory The remaining two spinsters were on the north side of the peninsula. Kate Griffin, 24, was a spinster in Castlegregory and lived with her parents and nine siblings. Martramane Bridget Bunyan, 24, was a spinster in the adjacent townland of Martramane where her father, John, was a shopkeeper and a widower. As for the other recorded wool-related occupations: six women declared their occupations to be ‘Wool spinner’. Two men were recorded as ‘Wool carders’. The largest group in the sector were weavers. Fifteen men gave ‘Wool weaver’ as their occupation and five women followed the same profession.
What we don’t know for certain is whether all eight shepherds recorded were operating their own sheep farms or working for someone else. Were they sheep farmers rather than shepherds – both occupational titles are interchangeable but shepherd could mean someone who protects and stays with the sheep – Inishvickillaun being the exception, probably. Minard West Still moving east we find shepherd Thomas Dorgan, 50, in Minard West living with his wife Catherine, 40, and their seven children, the eldest was Mike, 24, and the youngest was Annie, 3.
Ceol Am Lóin
Puckisland. Still in the District Electoral Division (DED) of Minard we find shepherd Thomas Blennerhassett, 30, in Puckisland along with his wife Ellen, 28, and their daughter Julianne aged one. Ballyarkane Eighter (Lack) Moving east again we find three shepherds who lived in close proximity. Daniel Griffin, 18, lived in Ballyarkane Eighter with his father, John, 34 and a ‘Labourer’, and his mother Mary, 34. Ballyarkane Oughter Timothy Evans, 28, was a shepherd in Ballyarcane Oughter. He was the son of Thomas, 70, and Maggie, 60. In the same townland we find the youngest shepherd - 16 year-old Michael Connor, son of Michael, 54 and a farmer, and Mary, 44. Beheenagh, Kilgobban. Our final shepherd was located in the townland of Beheenagh, the only one discovered on the north side of the peninsula. His name was William Henderson, 33, who was married to Jeanie, 30. They had three children. The youngest was aged 7 and was born in Kerry. The rest of the family had all been born in Scotland and were Presbyterians. What had induced them to move to Kerry?

Classic Custard Tart
While this is cooking you can prepare the pasta. Cook this in a large pot of salted water until al dente. Strain the pasta and keep back a little of the pasta water.
By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School
for the breadcrumbs Heat a pan over medium heat. Once hot add a little oil and then the breadcrumbs. After about 2 minutes they should take on some colour. At this stage add the garlic. Cook for another two minutes or so. Take them off the heat and add some lemon zest and parsley. to serve Add a dash of the pasta water to the mushroom ragu, add in the pasta. Mix this well, add in some of the bread crumbs. Divide this between 4 bowls. Sprinkle the remaining breadcrumbs over the pasta. Add some parmesan if you like. We cooked this recently at the Cookery School and it reminded how cooking a simple dish can be so rewarding. There is good reason that the Italians take so much pride in cooking a good ragu. The trick is to be patient, let the onions, garlic, celery and thyme soften over a low heat. Take your time at the start and let all the flavours develop as the dish cooks. Once everything has been added to the pot, continue to let it all simmer away slowly. The aroma of the vegetables, red wine and tomatoes cooking slowly will make anyone nearby hungry.

sacrafice and hard work that goes on behind the scenes in training sessions which very often is forgotten about by their supporters. TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings continue meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7 p.m. on Mondays. Great to see the Residents Associations in some of our local estates having success with improvements to their areas. Our new Wildflower Gardens should be full completed shortly and will be clearly signposted for easy identification. PARKING. With the noticeable increase in visitor numbers over the past few weeks the Business Chamber appeal again to all employees who drive to work to please park their vehicles in locations away from the centre of town. There are many safe and convenient
In the interest of safety some road closures will be in operation details of which are in local press and radio news and in the DAR website. On Sunday June 12th one of the oldest Regattas in the country the Ballydavid Regatta is scheduled to commence from the local Pier at 1.30p.m. All the clubs from the Dingle Peninsula have indicated they intend to sent teams for both under age and senior races so another entertaining afternoons sport is envisaged to kick start the summer rowing season. PRESS COVERAGE. The Little Cheese Shop and Lisbeth Mulcahy's Shop both in Green Street were named recently in a list of the top 75 of the Best Independant Irish Shops this year. Well deserved recognition highlighting the attraction such outlets offer to visitors and locals alike. The Sunday Independant Culture Supplement headlines were very complementary last weekend. They quoted popular actor Laura Dern ( of Jurassic Park fame) as stating she Is obsessed with Dingle, is in love with Kerry and mourns the disappearance of our endearing dolphin Fungie. SPORTS SUCCESSES. Congratulations to the many young boys and girls from the Peninsula who were part of successful school and club teams in a wide variety of sporting , social and cultural activities at local, provincial and national level over the past few months. Its great to see such interest and involvement by our youth and hopefully their enthusiasm and participation will continue for many years to come. Involvement in group activities is so important for everybodys physical and mental health and development as a human being contributing to the well being of others around us as well. Not forgetting the exploits of local sporting personalities at senior, under 20 and minor intercounty level all of whom played their part in the ongoing success of their respective teams. We wish them all continued success and indeed thank them for the dedication, personal 22 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
areas within walking distance of any office or shop in Dingle Town and little or no excuse for taking up valuable spaces in town for long periods each day. After all if your customers or clients or the shopping public cannot park in town chances are they will travel elsewhere which may eventually prove the cause of you losing your job when your business is not viable anymore. I don't think I can explain it any simpler how selfish parking can effect the continuity of one's employment!!!. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Abseil Croke Park For Cancer Support Cancer Support Group hope to find fearless fundraisers to take a Leap of Faith with them in August
Open: Mon - Sat, 7am - 5pm Large selection of cakes, confectionery, sandwiches, hot pies, sausage rolls, teas, coffees etc. Wide selection of breads
The team at Kerry Cancer Support Group launched their “Leap of Faith ‘22” challenge on Saturday last with Charity ambassador Colm Cooper doing a demo on the day. The abseil will take place in Croke Park on the 21st of August. They are looking for fearless fundraisers to descend from the iconic Hogan Stand and abseil over 100 feet to pitch side. Funds raised from the abseil will finance the work being done by the Group in Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick in the provision of their supported Healthlink transport services. These transport patients to cancer related appointments free of charge in the region.
Open Call for Culture Night Kerry, 2022 The seventeenth edition of Culture Night will take place on Friday 23 September 2022.
The funds will ensure that the group continues to uphold its mission and vision – “That no one should face their cancer journey alone”. Since setting up the transport service in 2010 the group have transported over 6,000 service users to nearly 60,000 appointments and have become affectionately known as a travelling support group. Kerry Cancer Support Group have not set a fundraising goal for the abseil as its their first time doing the event. They hope that the challenge will be a popular one in Kerry and provide a unique opportunity to see The Hogan Stand from a different angle. Spaces are limited so there is a €100 registration fee to secure a place. The Group will not set a target for each individual but hope that each does their best to raise funds to help keep this vital service on the road. If you would like information on the Leap of Faith ‘22” challenge go to their website www.kerrycancersupport.com or contact info@ kerrycancersupport.com Kerry Cancer Support Group was established in 2007 and has been transporting the people of Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick to hospitals in Kerry, Cork and Limerick for their cancer related appointments since 2010. Their centre at Maine Street in Tralee is very welcoming and people are always encouraged to drop in to discuss anything relating to their journey. All of their services are Covid Compliant. Call 066-7195560 for information.
Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. It actively promotes the rich and varied culture that is treasured and nurtured in people’s lives, today and every day. It is delivered nationwide as well as online. On the night, doors to cultural institutions such as museums, theatres and galleries will be open late. Special events will be programmed at participating locations and, thanks to the continued support of the Arts Council as well as local authorities such as Kerry County Council, all activities are made available to the public free of charge. Culture Night Kerry is funded by Kerry County Council and the Arts Council and supported by Creative Ireland Kerry. The Arts Office is asking for anyone interested in organising an event for Culture Night Kerry to get in touch at arts@kerrycoco.ie. Tá séasúr na dturasóirí linn arís. Agus mar sin, tá séasúr na gcuairteoirí linn. Mar go bhfuilimid inár gcónaí i, g“Ceann des na háiteanna is deise sa tír ,” déarfainn go bhfuil taithí ag ana chuid agaibh fáilte a chur roimh chuairteoirí go dtí bhúr dtithe. Saghas B&B nó óstán neamh-oifigiúil iad áiteanna cónaithe muintir na háite seo go minic!
7) Na daoine a thagann ina n-aonar; Ag brath ar cé atá i gceist, is féidir leis an gcuairt seo bheith ana thaitneamhach do gach éinne. Faoiseamh; briseadh deas ón ngnáthsaol; cara nó gaol éigin is breá leat nach bhfuil feicthe agat le stáir, a thuigeann tusa agus do nósanna, atá mar chomhluadar iontach agus a chuireann gliondar ort bheith timpeall orthu. Nó is féidir leis an dturas seo bheith mar jab lán-aimseartha ar feadh tamaill, ach ceann gan pinsean, gan pá dos na huaireanta breise a dheineann tú; gan sos lóin fiú. Agus ná bí ag caint faoi na rólanna éagsúla – treoraí, cócaire, scéalaí, glantóir, chauffeur…. Ní raibh sé seo luaite sa chonradh. Cuireann sé fonn ort dul ar scor. 8) Na daoine atá iliomad agus róghlórmhar don dtigh; Caitheann tú uaireanta ag ullmhú don gcuairt seo; ag fáil réidh le gach rud luachmhar nó dobhriste; ag pleanáil béilte agus ag ceannach bídh; ag athrú seomraí leapacha timpeall ionas go mbeidh leaba ag gach éinne….ach fós. Ní féidir go leor ullmhúcháin a dhéanamh don ndream seo – i do cheann nó do thigh. Pléascann siad isteach mar bhuama, agus ní bhíonn deireadh leis an anró nó an anord ar feadh míosa (Cad é?! Ní rabhadar anseo ach ar feadh CÚIG LÁ?!!). Loiteann siad an seomra folcadh, an t-úrlár, an péint nua, agus an síochán. Ach, “Slán! Go hiontach sibh a fheiscint! Tar ar ais go luath!” a chloiseann tú ag teacht amach as do ghob agus iad ag fágaint. Agus tagann téacs leath-uair a chloig níos déanaí, “Bhaineamar an oiread sin taitneamh as an mbriseadh. ‘Bhfuil spás agaibh an chéad deireadh seachtaine fada eile?” 9) Na daoine ba bhreá leat dá dtiocfaidís arís is arís eile: Fós le teacht.
Tommy Murphy Painting & Decorating
Tháinig cuairteoir chugainn an deireadh seachtaine seo caite nach rabhamar ag tnúth leis ar chor ar bith – ní dhéanann an duine seo mórán taistil, so saghas onóir ab ea é gur rinneadar an géabh (fada go leor) síos ó BÁC. Agus chuir sé sin ag smaoineamh mé ar na daoine a thagann; ní na sluaite turasóirí ar bhusanna a landeáileann sa Daingean, a chaitheann cúpla pingin agus a fhágann, ach na cuairteoirí a thagann is a fhágann rian inár dtithe agus ruainne inár gcuisneoirí (agus b’fhéidir, má tá an t-ádh linn, ríméid inár gcroíthe!).

1) Na daoine a thagann go rialta; De ghnáth bíonn an gasra seo go breá – nó bheiféá, “As baile,” níos minicí nuair a dheireann siad go bhfuil sé ar intinn acu teacht….aríst. Taithí agat orthu; taithí acu ort agus ar do rithim agus sceideal; cur amach acu ar an áit, agus an rud is fearr – tá fhios acu cá bhfuil an citeal.
Novecento Pizzeria
2) Na daoine a dheireann de shíor go bhfuil siad chun teacht ach nach dtagann; Is maith leat na daoine seo, den gcuid is mó. Fiú ba bhreá leat dá dtiocfaidís, nó ní leanfá ar aghaidh ag tabhairt cuireadh dóibh. Agus i gcónaí bíonn siad, “Go deimhin,” ag teacht i mbliana, agus fíorbrón orthu nár thánadar cheanna. Ach fós, i gcónaí, an chéad uair eile go gcíonn sibh a chéile ná nuair a fhilleann tú abhaile nó nuair a bhuaileann sibh le chéile áit éigin eile…..agus an t-am dár gcionn….agus an t-am dár gcionn.
Main Street, Dingle
3) Na daoine a fhanann ró-fhada; Go bhfóire Dia orainn. Is daoine áille iad seo. Níl faic mícheart leo. Fáilte mhór rompu. Ach in ainm Dé, tá gach uile braillín salach, na gréithe ar fad úsáidte, agus an bhia go léir ite. Téigí abhaile! Ana shásta iad a fheiscint….ag teacht, agus ag imeacht. 4) Na daoine nach bhfanann fada go leor; Dream ait. Idir iad siúd agus an grúpa díreach thuasluaite, n’fheadar fútsa ach t’fhios agam cé ab fhearr liom. Ach b’fhéidir nach dtuigeann na daoine seo cé chomh fada amach is atáimid, agus an taisteal atá i gceist. B’fhéidir go dtuigeann áfach, agus is cuma leo. B’fhéidir nach maith leo tusa (Riamh! Dodhéanta!) an méid sin. Ach tagann siad – bail o Dhia orthu – agus sara bhfuil na scónaí fuar amach as an oighean, tádar imithe. An é seo conas mar a mhaireann siad de gháth – ag déanamh, “Cameo,” anso is ansiúd? Chomh do-aimsithe leis an pimpernel; nóimeat amháin tádar ag teacht isteach, beannachtach barrógach. Agus ansan…imithe. Ar bhaineadar taitneamh as an dturas? Cá fios? 5) Na daoine atá neamhspléach; Gaolta leis an ndream díreach thuasluaite. Tógann siad bia leo. Tiomanánn siad. Téann siad ar siúlóidí ina n-aonar – bhuel; gan tusa, ar a laghad. Deineann siad a rud féin. Uaireanta ullmhaíonn siad dinnéar duit! Taighde ar fad déanta acu – nó faic, ach níl sé uathu. An bhfuil siad ar a laethanta saoire? N’fheadar, mar ní chíonn tú iad. Go breá, ach….NACH BHFUILIM DE DHÍTH? NACH BHFUIL GÁ LIOM? LOVE MEEEEEEE!!!! 6) Na daoine a bhíonn ag brath ort i gcomhair na haon ní; Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor THE MIKE O'NEILL WALK Over 200 turned out to join the family of Mike O'Neill on the second anniversary of his passing on Sunday 22nd May. The walk led by Tomás Crowley, Tommy Dowling and Gordon Saunders and the family dog Jess took us up Knockglossmore and across the Dingle Way over the Finglas river and down the Camp road to the graveyard where Tracy, Milo, Gordon, Kate and Tom played a few tunes around the grave in Camp Cemetary where Mike lies peacefully, R.I.P. The last leg of the walk took us down onto the beach and across the river at Bun abha and up Kealod, back to the Railway Tavern for lovely refreshments prepared by Ann and family. Mike's great friend Michael Healy Rae came along too and Frank Donnelly from Mikes days in the Air Corps paid tribute to Mike in Irish at the graveside. And so ended a great day of memories, a tribute to Camp's one and only Mike O'Neill. The O'Neill family would like to thank all who took part and all who contributed to the Stroke Unit at UHK. €1700 was raised. Míle Buíochas. Colourful Cúinne art exhibition features work from the pupils of nine West Kerry schools
‘We hope the Corca Dhuibhne community will visit the exhibition to see the wonderful work that the children and teachers have achieved, and join us to celebrate our natural world.
The team behind a new and exciting biodiversity programme, Cúinne an Ghiorria, are inviting you to come along to the Díseart in Dingle between 12 and 4pm on June 11th and 12th and see what creative work the pupils of nine West Kerry schools have come up with after completing a four-month programme exploring the rich wildflower and insect life outside their school doors. Each participating school was asked in February to leave a small corner of their grounds to
develop into a mini-wildflower meadow habitat. Through engaging with the plant and insect life that emerged and taking part in insect hunts, outdoor games and an arts and crafts workshop, the pupils explored the role local wild plants play in West Kerry’s culture, traditions and eco-systems. Factfiles on their favourite wildflowers, and plant lore the pupils collected from family and friends will also be on show as part of the exhibition.
Tá an clár á sheoladh tré Ghaolainn i bhformhór na scoileanna agus go dátheangach i roinnt eile acu. Tá an fhoireann fíorbhuíoch as ucht an fháiltiú agus an tacaíocht atá faighte againn ó na múinteoirí ar fad.’ A biodiversity-based scavenger hunt and creative activities for children will also be taking place on Saturday as part of Cruinniú na nÓg (funded by Kerry County Council).
Darach Ó Murchú, Zoë Uí Fhaoláin Green, Emer Fallon and Marike Dunk designed the outline of the programme. Manuela Dei Grandi stepped West Kerry Live 33

Crosfhocal Sean-nóis
Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Sean –Airgead Bhí taispeantas an- dheas ag Mick Davis le linn Fhéile na Bealtaine bunaithe ar an sean-airgead a bhí againn roimh theacht an airgid dheachúil. Cuireadh ar mo shúile dhom nach bhfuil aon tuiscint anois ag daoine ‘óga’ ar an airgead seo, agus chomh casta a bhí sé an tsóinseáil ceart a ríomh don siopadóireacht. Mar seo a bhí: An bun-aonad ná an punt (inchurtha le 1.27 euro nuair a athraíodh an t-airgead). Bhí fiche scilling sa phunt, agus dhá phingin déag sa scilling, rud a d’fhág go raibh 240 pingin sa phunt. An fheoirling an t-aonad ba lú: cheithre fheoirling = Pingin, 2 Fheoirling = Leathphingin, dhá leathphingin = Pingin. Trí Pingine = Leathréal, 2 Leathréal = réal, 2 leathréal = scilling, 2 Scilling= Flóirín, Flóirín agus Réal = Leath Choróin. Bhí boinn ag freagairt dóibh siúd go léir. Ansin bhí aonaid eile in úsáid gan bonn, mar tuistiún (ceithre phingin), Coróin = cúig scilling.
Iománaíocht Sár chluiche iomána a bhí idir an Clár agus sínsir Luimní ar an nDomhnach seo caite i gcraobh na Mumhan. Bhuaidh na buachaillí Cois Sionna [theas] sa dara leath do am breise. Bhíodar cothrom tréis seachtó neomat. Is dócha gur í an chluiche ab fhearr i mbliana. An iad Luimneach a bhuafaidh Corn Mac Cárrthaigh? Bás
Fiche a haon Scilling nó £1 agus scilling a bhí sa ghiní.
Caid Cé gur éirigh le foireann sinsir na Gaeltachta dhá chluiche a bhuachaint i gComórtas Peile na Gaeltachta i Leitir Mór na Gaillimhe, sin ar an nDaingean agus foireann Bhulbh Tóne na Mí, Dhein Béal Átha an Ghaorthaigh scrios ortha. Beidh lá eile acu. Níl aon amhras ach go raibh Dara agus Páidí Ó Sé ar fheabhas. Bhí imreoirí móra ceolmhara ag muintir cois Gaorthaigh,
Fuair Seán Seosamh Ruiséal ón gCoimín bás ar an 31ú lá do Bhealtaine. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Máiréad a iníonacha Áine, Órla agus Ciara, deartháracha, Dave agus Noel agus deirféaracha Bríde, Peig agus Áine. Bhí mac, Seán agus deirfiúr Máirín tréis bháis roimhis, trócaire ortha. Fear breá socair b’ea John Joe. Cuimhním uair gur séideadh seic a chuireas isteach fé bhonn doras Bainc sa Daingean amach arís fé bhun an dorais. ’Sé Séan a fuair é agus a thug dom é. Is mé a bhí buíoch. In Iothlainn Dé dá anam síochánta socair. Fuair an- chara dhom bás lé déanaí, b’é sin Pádraig Seosamh Ó Mathúna ón gCúil Rua sa tSeana Phobal, sna Déise. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Síle, dá gclann, Tomás, Brian, Pádraig, Liam. a dhearthair Mícheál agus deirféaracha Caitlín agus Eibhlín. Feirmeóir b’ea Pádraig. Bhí sé an- mhór le Jer Ó Cíobháin trócaire air
Dhá Choróin –Leath Shobhrain. 2. Leath Shabhrain = £1.
Na boinn is ait é mar scéal gur Sasanach Percy Metcafe a dhear na boinn. Bheartaigh coiste ar a raibh an Seanadóir- file William Butler Yeats go mbeadh ainmhí, éan nó iasc ar gach bonn, agus cláirseach ar an dtaobh thiar ortha go léir. Ar an bhfeorling bhí Cearc Fraoigh, ar Leathphingin bhí Muc agus ál banbh. Cearc a bhí ar an bPingin, ar an Leath Real bhí Giorria agus Cú Faoil a bhí ar an réal. Tarbh a bhí ar an scilling, Bradán ar an bhFlóirín agus Capall ar an Leath Choróin. Anois tá siad agat.
balbh’, a deireadh sí nuair ná raibh dada le fáil. Bean cheoil agus cleachtan b’ea í agus is mó leathanach a chló-bhuail sí dhom dos na toghacháin. Bhreá léi Páidí Mhárthain agus Sláine Ní Chathalláin ag canadh ach b’é Joe Dolan a rogha. Bhain sí sásamh as an saol. Is mo scéal seóigh a eachtraigh sí dhom ach ní chuala riamh í ag malachtú ná ag cáineadh aon duine go maslach. Bhí an greann agus aoibh an gháire agus na fáilte, coitianta ar a ceannaithe.
Braithfidh a mhuintir, a ghaolta a cháirde uatha an fear fuinniúil ceannsa cáirdiúil. Beannach Dé lena caoin anam cneasta. Conradh na Gaeilge Ar an 28ú lá Bealtaine fuair Áine Uí Ghruiméal bás in aois seachtó bliain beagnach. Bhí a céile Uinseann tréis bháis blianta beaga ó shin, trócaire air agus ar a deartháir Piaras. Méala mór a bás dá mac Seán Páidí agus a bhean, agus a iníon Cliodhna agus a pairtnéir Terry, deirfearacha Dolores, Marion agus Elaine gaolta agus cairde. In Iothlainn Dé a hanam gealgháireach.
Tugann Chonradh na Gaeilge aghaidh ar Ghaeltacht éigin gach bhliain. Sinne an babhta seo. Táimíd ag réiteach do theacht Uachtarán agus baill do an Chonradh ar an mBuailtín. Beidh ceoltoirí, filí amhránaithe. léachtóir agus scéalaí aitheanta ann. Beidh an gabhar á róstadh ón lá deireannach don mí seo, oíche 31ú Déardaoin mar a mbeidh seoladh na hócaide agus ocáidí ar an Aoine agus an Satharn, agus ag críochnú tréis Aifreann an Domhnaigh.
Is mó lá agus oíche Shatharn a chaitheamair ag stocaireacht vótaí. ‘Tá againn’ a deireadh sí nuair a bheadh vóta geallta agus ‘coimeádaidís a vóta
