The Sun will Come Out Tomorrow but, in the meantime, Chilli Out! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

With no sign of a heatwave on the horizon and oversea travel in chaos with the queues and passports, it looks like the Irish Stay-cation may still be on the cards for many of us. Fear not! There is plenty of heat to be found – it may not be the tanning kind, but when you hear all about this amazing spice, it might just take the edge off those frayed nerves. Cayenne pepper and all the chilli peppers are so hot right now, mainly because they are in season during the Summer months but also because their heat, like the sun, is more than a warm, fuzzy feeling and may be the remedy for aches, pains and everyday ailments. Mexican and Peruvian indigenous people first used cayenne and similar chillies in cooking and medicine as far back as 7000BC. Doctors of the time used cayenne for stomach aches, cramps, gas and disorders of the circulatory system. Christopher Columbus brought chilli to Europe during his exploits in the 16th century and from there it made its way to Asia, India and Africa. It also made its way into the Materia Medica of these countries, the medicine books of the day citing similar health benefits and curative properties. Today, modern medicine recognizes the active ingredient in cayenne and other chillies, capsaicin and it is commonly used for pain relief and circulatory problems such as Raynauds Disease. The sensation felt when we eat chillies is not a taste but is registered as pain by the brain. You would wonder why anyone started eating chillies in the first place if they caused pain, but there is always one nutter at every party. Interestingly, it is this pain sensation that has the ability to dampen down pain in the long run. Scientists finally figured it out in the 20th century that capsaicin reduces the amount of substance P, a chemical that carries pain messages to the brain, in your body. When there is less substance P, the pain messages no longer reach the brain, and you feel relief. After several applications of capsaicin, local stores of substance P (and possibly other chemical pain messengers) become depleted, and the nerve fibres in that area transmit fewer pain signals. Capsaicin is often recommended for pain associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lower back pain, nerve pain from shingles, post-surgery pain (eg, mastectomy, amputations) and nerve damage pain in feet and legs of diabetic patients (diabetic peripheral neuropathy). The evidence for improved circulation is also well documented and accepted in modern medicine. It is understood that capsaicin dilates the blood vessels, improving blood flow from the heart. Used topically on fingers and toes, it widens the capillaries affected by Raynauds disease, bringing more blood flow and heat to these extremities. In Japan and China, capsaicin is commonly used to treat frostbite. Capsaicin increases the production of fibrinolytics, which help dissolve blood clots. This keeps the blood flowing smoothly. The use of any substance as a medicine should always be supervised. Capsaicin can interact with certain drugs so do check with your health care provider first if you are taking prescription medicine. Its use as a digestive agent has also been investigated, though not as conclusively as the other claims. It is thought that the heat from capsaicin induces the production of stomach acids which aid digestion. The increased production of these acids is met with increased secretion of mucous membranes in the stomach to protect the linings from gastric 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

acids. However, if inflammation (gastritis) and/or ulcers are present, it is not recommended for this purpose. Capsaicin taken orally can increase sweating – this is evident if you eat a hot chilli and begin to sweat quite soon after. Ultimately, sweating cools you down, bringing blood to the surface of the skin where it cools. This explains why chilli is so popular in hotter countries. Not only does the climate favour the growing of pepper plants, the people also benefit by being able to cool down quickly. In 1912, American pharmacologist, Wilbur Scoville came up with a scale to quantify the heat in chillies which is relative to its capsaicin content. To establish a chilli pepper’s rating, Scoville would prepare it in a solution, which was then tested by five people. He increased its dilution until the sensation of heat disappeared. The score on the scale represents the level of dilution required for the sensation of heat to disappear completely. This is known as the Scoville Scale and chillies are rated in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Tabasco pepper has a rating of around 3750 SHU, Jalapeno pepper 6000 SHU, Cayenne 50000 SHU, Habanero chilli pepper around 150000 SHU. The Carolina Reaper, the hottest chilli in the world has a rating of 1.5 million SHU and was reported to feel like eating molten lava. Pepper spray rates have a whopping 5.3 million SHU which makes it an amazingly effective defence weapon! Chillies are a wonderful example of the impact of seasonal food. At their best during the Summer, the heat found in chillies mirror that of the sun. This heat (capsaicin) fine tunes the organs and systems most associated with Summer energy – the heart, blood vessels, the small intestine, the pericardium (sac-like structure which holds the heart and the roots of major blood vessels in place) and the tongue. In turn, we feel and express joy, the emotion most associated with Summer energy – all this from a little chilli, the perfect antidote to the damp, misty days of an Irish Summer! Dinner Dinner Dinner To start the project Betsie arranged a visit to Kerry Woollen Mills in Beaufort. There we saw how the wool was processed from it’s natural state (fleece sheared from the sheep), through to carding, dyeing, spinning and weaving. Finally in the mill shop we saw the end products including shawls, geansaís, stocaí, and rugs.

Kerry Woollen Mills kindly donated woven wool strips, a byproduct of weaving fabrics, for our project. In this way we were able to think green and recycle materials. The Men's Shed in Dingle assisted us in making and sanding pegs looms on which we created chair covers and a wall hanging. We spent a lot of time planning, choosing colours and making our chair cushions.

Farming News Louis Murchan ACRES - €1.5 BILLION AGRI-ENVIRONMENT SCHEME Tuesday saw the announcement of the long awaited replacement for GLAS. This new agrienvironment scheme, will be known as the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (‘ACRES’). It must be stressed that approval for this scheme) is still awaited from the EU Commission so all the proposals may be subject to change. This €1.5 billion scheme is a very large investment in agri-farming and will be the flagship environmental scheme. ACRES will be a really exciting and farmer-friendly scheme that will help address biodiversity decline while delivering an important income support for up to 50,000 farm families. This scheme basically continues their GLAS commitment to protection of the environment. It is proposed that, like GLAS, all farmers will have the opportunity to apply for ACRES. There are, however, two entry approaches in the proposed new scheme namely: •

an ACRES General approach, available nationally (outside of the high priority geographical area as defined for the ACRES Co-operation approach below), which offers a range of measures (both targeted and general); and

an ACRES Co-operation approach, available to farmers in defined high priority geographical areas. Eight areas in the country have been defined by a cross departmental working group as having particular environmental characteristics and farmers in those areas may engage in the new AECM through cooperation project teams

All farmers who apply under the Basic Payment Scheme will have the opportunity to apply for ACRES with both approaches offering attractive rates of payments, with the approach for which they are eligible determined by the location of their land. The application process will be a bit more complicated than previous scheme applications. The next steps in the preparatory process is as follows: •

farmers will be able to identify the ACRES approach for which they are eligible by logging on to the department’s online system (AgFood ), or by texting the department through an SMS facility by doing the following:

This involves an SMS Facility (the ‘ACRES Stream checker) as a means by which farmers may ascertain which AECM approach they are eligible for, with instructions as follows: •

applicant can text to 50124 with the following text “DAFM ACRES” followed by their Herd ID. For example “DAFM ACRES A1234567”. DAFM will check the applicants Stream eligibility based on their submitted BPS 2021 Application data. Once the applicant’s option has been determined the department will text backwith their option, (for example “H1234567 - Stream: Co-operation, CP Area: EAST SOUTH EAST. Please contact your Advisor to submit an Access Agreement”.

As you can see, it is quite a cumbersome and complicated process. Farmers are asked to be patient, and not start a stampede to their advisor’s door(s). It will take some time to get organised and set up a system to commence applications. TOP 6 MOST COMMONLY PRODUCED AG COMMODITIES WORLDWIDE Agricultural facts are interesting and sometimes very useful. We put food into our mouths two to four times per day, but most of us don’t know where this food is coming from. If you ever wondered as to its origin, here are some basic facts. In the last two decades, the production of crops worldwide increased by over 53%, reaching a record high of 9.8 billion tons in 2020. While a variety of agricultural commodities are produced worldwide, in 2019, only four crops account for half of the world’s agricultural production. Sugar cane tops the list with 1.9 billion tons, accounting for 21% of the total output. It is followed by corn with 1.1 billion tons (12%) and rice and wheat with 0.8 billion tons (8%) each. Milk:- This is one of the most commonly cultivated agricultural commodities in the world. Today, 37 countries have cow milk as their top agricultural product. Germany is one of the biggest milk producers, with over 33 million tons of milk produced every year. In monetary terms, this adds to 12.9 billion US dollars. New Zealand is another big cow milk producer. It produces 21.9 million tons of milk every year, reaching a market value of $7.8 billion. Other key producers of cow milk include the United Kingdom (15.5 million tons), Netherlands (14,5 million tons) and Poland (14,8 million tons). Italy (12.7 million tons), is another as are Uzbekistan (10.9 million tons), and Ireland (8.5 million tons). Sugar cane:- While sugarcane originated in South and Southeast Asia, today, it is commonly used in various regions worldwide. 37 countries account for

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

sugar cane as their top production crop. Even though countries like Thailand, Pakistan, and Australia top the list in sugarcane production, the subtropical climate of South America and Africa creates a perfect environment for sugarcane production. Latin American countries such as Columbia (24.6 million tons), Cuba (13.8 million tons), Ecuador (11.1 million tons), and Bolivia (10.9 million tons) are big players in sugarcane production. Alongside, in 2020 Mexico produced over 53.9 million tons of sugarcane, accounting for $2.4 billion in trade. At the same time, African countries produced over 5% of total sugarcane in 2020. South Africa (18.2 million tons), Egypt (14.9 million tons), and Kenya (6.7 million tons) are the primary producers. Corn/Maize:- Corn is the most produced cereal globally, with over 1.1 billion tons produced in 2020. What led corn to become a widely cultivated crop is its easiness of cultivation, drying, storing, and transport. Though it was first cultivated in Central America and Mexico, today, corn is grown in all continents, excluding Antarctica. In 2020, over 165 countries produced corn, with 16 listing corn as their most cultivated harvest. The United States is currently the top producer of corn, with over 360 million tons produced, holding a market value of $52.4 billion. It is followed by China, which in 2020 had 260.8 million tons of corn. From the other side of the world, Brazil harvested over 103.9 million tons of corn, ranking as the world’s third-largest producer. These three countries produced about two-thirds of the world’s corn. Ukraine, another big player in corn production, cultivated over 30.2 million tons, valued at $5.2 billion in trade. Its neighbour Russia lists corn as their most produced agricultural product, with 13.8 million tons produced in 2020. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February put a halt to agriculture in Ukraine. At the same time, countries around the world are shutting off trade with Russia. This disruption made the price of corn jump by 19.1% in March 2022 compared to the previous month. Wheat:- Since it was first domesticated in 9,600 BC, wheat has played a key role in food and nutritional security worldwide. Today, after corn, wheat is the most produced agricultural product globally, with over 760.9 million tons of wheat cultivated in 2020. Its favourable cultivating conditions allowed wheat to become a crash crop for countries in every direction. In 2020, wheat was grown by 126 countries worldwide. 13 of them had wheat as their most produced crop, including Russia, France, and Canada. China is the world’s biggest wheat producer, with over 134.2 million tons of wheat produced in 2020, holding a $53.4 billion value in global trade. India is the second-largest producer, with over 107.5 million tons of wheat cultivated. Russia, the third-largest wheat producer, harvested over 85.8 million tons of wheat. Ukraine is the 8th largest producer globally, with 24.9 million tons of wheat cultivated. Together, they account for about 30% of the global wheat trade, making the region one of the major breadbasket regions. Because of the region’s significance in wheat production, its predicted the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war will create a shortage of wheat supply in the following months. The impacts are already present, with wheat prices spiking to 19.7% in March 2022, compared to a month earlier. Since wheat is an essential raw material for the processed food industry, the increase can cause a ripple effect on prices for various foods. Rice:- About 13,500 years ago, the Chinese domesticated the first strains of rice. Since then, rice has become a staple food responsible for feeding half of the world’s population. It is cultivated in over 110 countries across the globe which in 2020 reached a total production of 756.7 million tons. Asia produces 89% of the world’s rice, China being the world’s largest producer of rice with a 211.8 million tons harvest in 2020. India is second-largest, with 178.3 million tons. Rice constitutes the most produced crop for 12 countries, including Bangladesh (54.9 million tons), Myanmar (25.1 million tons), Cambodia (10.9 million tons), Nepal (5.5 million tons), and Sri Lanka (5.1 million tons). Potatoes:- Did you know that potatoes were first domesticated in the Andes region? They were brought to Europe by Spanish explorers, and from there, the cultivation of potatoes spread worldwide. Today, South American countries produce only 5% of the world’s potatoes. In 2020, half of the world’s potatoes were produced in Asia. China (78.1 million tons) and India (51.3 million tons) are the world’s largest producers. At the same time, Europe supplied a little less than one-third of the world’s potato production, from which Russia (19.6 million tons) and Ukraine (20.8 million tons) top the list. The United States ranks as the fifth-largest producer, with a yield of 18.7 million tons of potatoes. Since Russia and Ukraine alone account for one-tenth of the world’s potato production, the Russian invasion of Ukraine surged the market price for potatoes and other staple foods such as pasta, bread, and sunflower oil. Experts predict the potato price will increase up to 30%. This increases the price of many processed foods, including everybody’s favourite potato chips. Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland Great news – Fáilte ar ais go dtí Ionad an Bhlascaoid. After 2 years of Covid, Renovation and Renewal, the Blasket Centre will re-open to the public on Tuesday 28th June. Their major new interpretive exhibition will be magnificent, gan dabht, so make sure to visit over the coming weeks and months. They are looking forward to seeing many of you over the course of the season. Please spread the word to families, staff and visitors. Comhghairdeachas chomh maith to Dingle Sea Safari on their latest TripAdvisor Ranking as Number 10 in their Top 10 Places to Visit. What a feat when all the others are Dublin based experiences. Congratulations to all the team! Turas treoraithe - tours guided by our locals are a great way to relax and discover the best of the Dingle Peninsula. Be informed, find the best things to do, enjoy authentic local experiences on tailor made tours by our local guides. Uncover some great stories and have the landscape come alive with history, mythology and folklore (and a little bit of gossip)! Try a guided tour and see places that aren’t on the popular tourist routes and share the important stories behind this place. Our local tour guides and companies offer local experiences and are predominantly local businesses. To get out and about this season, be it land, sea, food, walking, archaeology, heritage, farming, cycling – you name it………. Enjoy the best local experience with our local guided tours and directly support our local economy and community. Seasonal outlook – it’s interesting to note the changes that are appearing this season. Bookings are looking soft for July and August. Whilst it is wonderful to see so many here from overseas markets, the domestic (home) market seems to be taking off to traditional international destinations this summer. Due to so many global events occurring and with Covid still in the community, people are more sensitive to pricing and value for money. It is important that the high pricing we are seeing in Dublin hotels, eateries, car hire, etc. are not happening on the ground locally as this will have a direct (negative) effect on bookings. Another element on weaker bookings could

Cake Sale and RafFLe in aid of

St. Mary Of The Angels, Beaufort

be the significant increase in the number of Airbnb lets / accommodation in recent years, that whilst the domestic market led demand during covid times, with the return of international travel, the demand no longer seems as strong. Pricing is a critical factor too as all markets are much more price sensitive due to the increases in cost of living. However, this could be seen as an opportunity for second home owners to make their accommodation available to the long term let market that has been challenged locally over the last number of years affording local families and staff places to rent. Beimid ag comhoibriú leo siúd thar na míonna amach romhainn chun aird idirnáisiúnta a tharraingt ar Mhol Chorca Dhuibhne, ar roinnt daoine a bhíonn ag obair linn, agus ar roinnt tionscadal go bhfuilimid bainteach leo ar fud Chorca Dhuibhne. Thugadar ceann d'alt a bhí againn sa cholún seo i Mí Aibreáin faoi Shéan Pól Ó Conchúir, duine d'ár gcliaint áitiúla go bhfuil deasc ar cíos aige inár spás oibre sa Chúilín. You may be familiar with a popular website www.irishcentral.com, who cater to the Irish American and Irish diaspora across the world with information related to Ireland? We are collaborating with them over the coming months to put an international spotlight on Dingle Hub, some people we work with and projects that we are involved in across Dingle Peninsula. They picked up on an article we had in this column in April on Seán Pól Ó Conchúir, one of our local clients who hires a hotdesk in our Cooleen workspace. They have done a lovely profile on Dingle Global Education (DGE), the company Seán Pól and partner Lenka set up last year to provide American third level students with study-abroad programmes here in West Kerry where they learn about Irish literature, folklore, and language.

áit a bhfoghlaimíonn siad faoi litríocht na hÉireann, béaloideas, agus teanga. Leagann Seán Pól béim ar na buntáistí a mbaineann le bheith ag obair i spás oibre comhroinnte ar nós Mhol Chorca Dhuibhne. Ní bhaineann seo le háiseanna ar nós leathanbhanda ardluais amháin, ach leis an gcaidreamh le daoine eile ó chúlraí difriúla oibre chomh maith. Cuireann sé síos ar an tslí gur spreagadh a rogha dearadh lógó dá chomhlacht DGE trí chomhránna a bhí aige lena chomharsana sna deascanna taobh leis, a roinn a gcuid smaointí leis. “Ní bhaineann mo chruthaitheacht féin le cúrsaí dearaidh... Níl aon amhras ach gur chuir aiseolas go mór le mo chuid tairgiúlachta.” Tá Seán Pól ar cheann de roinnt cliant de chuid Mhol Chorca Dhuibhne a thóg deasc ar chíos ar feadh cúpla lá ar dtús, ach ar ghlac cinneadh fanacht go fad-téarmach ina dhiaidh sin. He describes how the process of choosing a logo design for his company DGE was boosted by chatting to his nearby desk neighbours who shared their ideas with him. “My creativity is certainly not in design… Receiving feedback definitely increased my productivity." Seán Pól is one of several clients of Dingle Hub who initially hired a desk just for a few days but has decided to become a long-term client. Ag teacht le chéile - Remote Workers Get Together Ba mhaith linn dul i dteagmháil le daoine atá ag obair ón mbaile timpeall Chorca Dhuibhne agus a fháil amach conas gur féidir linn tacú leis an bpobal seo atá ag méadú an t-am ar fad. Táimíd ‘ar turas’ chun sibhse a aimsiú agus chun cuidiú leis na comharsana cianda seo aithne a chur ar a chéile. We want to connect with people who are working from home around the Peninsula and see how we can support this growing community. We are ‘on tour’ to find out where you are and bring together your local remote neighbours.

along too! We know there are lots of people working this way so if you think that there is demand for a similar get together in your area, please drop a note to info@dinglehub.com (Subject: Coffee Morning) or call us. It will be great to connect these communities and get a better picture of who is working where, what they do and want! Keep an eye on our social media for future events. Beidh sé fíor-dheas na pobail seo a chur i dteagmháil lena chéile agus beidh sé cabhrach dúinn dar ndóigh a fháil amach cá bhfuil na daoine seo, cad atá ar siúl acu agus cad atá ag teastáil uathu! Bígí ag faire amach le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais faoin maidin chaifé agus faoi imeachtaí eile amach anseo. West Kerry Agricultural Show 2022 This year's show will take place at Dingle Mart Gounds on Sunday 17th July.

The article called ‘Seeing a different way of life what's it like to study abroad on the West Coast of Ireland’ was featured on the homepage of their website, which receives over two million visitors a month as well as on their social media channels. Seán Pól highlights the advantages of working in a shared workspace like Dingle Hub, where it isn’t just about facilities like high-speed broadband, but also interaction with others from different work backgrounds. Tá gearrchuntas álainn déanta acu ar Dingle Global Education (DGE), an comhlacht a bhunaigh Seán Pól agus a pháirtí Lenka anuraidh chun cláir oideachais thar lear a chur ar fáil do scoláirí Meiriceánacha triú-leibhéil anseo i gCiarraí Thiar, 16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

If you work from home and are based in the Cloghane/Castlegregory part of Dingle Peninsula, why not make time for a screen-break and join us for a tea or coffee? From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon

(In September 1850 the mail car was attacked by a number of men a few miles from Tralee. The driver used his whip on the attackers and to drive on the horses. One of the men was knocked to the ground and the mail car drove over him. The driver raced to the police station in Blennerville to report the incident. The police later arrested two men.) Kilcooly, (Kilmalkedar) John O’Connor, 26, of Kilcooly was a postman. He was a member of a very large family. We’ll read about them at a later date. (In 1854 the mail car was operated by a Mr. Benner.) Murreagh Ellen McDonnell, 34, was the Postmistress in Ballydavid. She was unmarried and the only person in the house on Census night.

In this issue we’re going to look at a particular group of communication workers, from Camp to Dunquin, as recorded in the Census which was taken on Sunday, 31 March, 1901. This group, men, women and boys all worked for the Postal Service. Also, some snippets on the history of the service on the peninsula are included.

(Ellen MacDonnell was appointed Postmistress in Ballydavid on Saturday 9 September 1893 by the Tralee Postmaster, a Mr. Mason.)

(In 1786 the Royal Mail announced that Dingle was to be established as a Post Town with postal deliveries twice weekly via Tralee.) Annascaul. For the Ashes in Annascaul it was a family affair. Thomas Ashe, 69, was the Postmaster; his sons Thomas, 20, and Michael, 18, were postmen and his daughter Margaret, 24, was a post office assistant. Further down the street there were two more postal workers – John Costigan, 53, a postman and John O’Connor, 18, a post boy. John’s mother, Mary, 40, was a widow. (In 1829 a postman named Sweeney left Tralee between 11 o’clock and midnight, with his post-bag, and walked the 30 miles to Dingle, arriving there ‘around eight or nine o’clock’. This was called the Foot Post. It must have been challenging during the winter months.) Castlegregory area John Somers, 53, was the Postmaster in Castlegregory. His son Robert, 17, was a postman and his son John, 15,was a Post boy. Patrick Harris of Cloghaneanode was one of the youngest post office workers at the age of 14. He was a post boy. James Sullivan, 46, from Martramane was a postman. (1n 1833 businessmen Jonathan Walpole and a Mr. Moriarty applied for a contract to convey the mail between Tralee and Dingle on their Jingle which was carrying passengers and goods between the towns. Was that vehicle known as the Dingle Jingle?) Cloghane/ Brandon area The oldest postal employee recorded on the peninsula was Matthew Corkery who was Sub-Postmaster in Cloghane. He was aged 86. Cornelius O’Neill, 18, was a post boy in the village and Nicholas O’Flaherty, 25, of Lisnakealwee was Sub-Postmaster.

Ceol Am Lóin

(In 1838 a Dingle resident named Patrick Nugent was a passenger on the mail car when he fell from the vehicle onto the road near Lispole. He suffered serious injuries to his head and neck and died as a result some hours later.)

Phoenix Memories

James Dean and Sal Mineo. We thoroughly enjoyed it and after stopping at a shop for some lemonade and biscuits we headed home. We discussed the plots and ambiguities of the film on the way and it shortened the journey. We were very pleased. I got home around four and the following day Dad asked where I was. I told him I was out. I didn’t want to go into detail as I knew he’d say I was a Stúmpa Amadáin (a stump of a fool), but Dan and I were proud of the accomplishment.

Maurice Bric

I went there many times for dancing and they had some terrific bands coming our way. I remember it was at the advent of Rock ’n’ Roll and every band in the country was in tune with Bill Bailey And the Comets. I remember a brother and sister, The Crones who attended every dance and though they were on in age, they gave us a tremendous display of Rock ’n’ Roll. He had her air bound and with dexterity would slide her through his legs without missing a beat. We were enthralled. We tried it ourselves but the results were just laughable. Even when I was married and home from New York, Mary Ellen and I looked forward to dancing in the Phoenix. I even remembered seeing a few drama performances there and we were always assured of a time to enjoy. I’ve just returned to Chicago after a two month holiday in my native Gorta Dubha, Ballyferriter. I was saddened to learn that the Phoenix was up for sale and that its remarkable attributes could cease. I left Gorta Dubha 62 years ago at the age of 18. My friends and I looked to the Phoenix and Murríoch to break the boredom and frustration of country living. It was desperate as winter came on us and the Phoenix had the added attraction of The Pictures. On an evening my friend Dan came to my house white knuckled with frustration due to the weather which prevented us from going far afield. We were both in our late teens and clashing with the elements. We were at our wits ends and Dan suggested we’d go to The Phoenix in Dingle to watch a film. We didn’t have a car of course and we were hesitant about our bikes as there were sharp wee squalls about, so we decided to walk. We stopped by the haggard and filled our wellies with straw to enhance any warmth within. And we left about 4pm. It was even getting dark then. We got to The Phoenix before 8pm and the film started. As long ago as it is I still remember the film: Rebel Without A Cause with

I know I’ve given a smattering reflection on times that were hard and The Phoenix was our refuge but we were young and we were all in similar circumstances back then. We got by on whatever meagre outlets we had and made the best of it. But I’ll tell you we weren’t in any way as pressured as the younger generation today. They may seem to have everything we didn’t even dream of but they certainly have to contend with all sorts of pressures we never dreamed of either. With cyber bullying and unknown factors of the internet being rampant I feel for them. We never had to worry about points to get into 3rd level education. If you got ‘em you got ‘em. We were destined to leave for someplace anyway. That was it. But today they’re up against it. There’s money. There’s access to drugs and alcohol and if you’re not into it, your ability or inability will be duly noted on the internet. So now more than ever we must look out for our young. Young men and women. I fully recognize our dilemmas weren’t close to the seriousness of their’s. Instead of shutting out avenues for gatherings in innocuous venues we should endeavour to secure more. We owe it to them. Please help them. I think they’re great despite what they have to contend with. Not only should we help them but it's something we must do.

In 1997 I met former Garda Sergeant Tim O’Donnell, born on the 9 March 1907 in Gleann na Gealt. Camp Co Kerry. Having joined An Garda Siochana in 1931, his registration number was 7937. He won 5 All-Irelands with Kerry:1929-1932 and 1937. Tim O’Donnell, was a raconteur of the first order, this is part of his life story: ‘In the early 30’s I was almost idle in the Garda Depot until a decent Killorglin high rank Garda Hugh Duffy fixed me up with a transfer to Kanturk, County Cork. Bill Sullivan was the local Superintendent. He had a pal in an outlying station. He brought him in and sent me to a place called Knocknagree. ‘I played a few games on the quiet with Knocknagree. Someone objected and I was called before the Kerry County Board and told I would be suspended. Small Ger Leary; the great Killarney GAA man fixed me up. One day I was handed a form informing me that I was being transferred to Killarney. On arrival I handed the form to the Sergeant? He asked; “What’s this?’ 18 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

‘There I teamed up with famous Kerry footballer Garda Paul Russell. Our duties were escorting prisoners to courts countrywide. Nipper Shanley; the noted Leitrim footballer was in Mountjoy Jail charged with murder. One day we escorted him to a court in the midlands. We were in no hurry. Leaving the city his alleged crime was off the menu. Nipper said.

Pitta Bread filled with Lamb Koftas and Mint Yogurt By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

Summer definitely has arrived when you are having these. A soft pitta bread filled with minced lamb cooked with spices and herbs and all topped off with a yogurt is one of the best ways to savour this time of year. These are perfect for lunch, evening meal or a gathering of friends. This dish has origins spreading from Greece all the way across the Middle East. When we think of the food of this region, everything has such freshness to it and is always brought to life with either spices or herbs or with a combination of both. Koftas work best with the brilliant lamb we have here, if you are not a fan of lamb try replacing the lamb with a mixture of beef and pork mince. It is one of those things that if you make it once and love it, you will over and over again. They are just fabulous. Serves 4 Ingredients For the Lamb Koftas 500g lamb mince 1 onion finely diced

Method

To cook

For the koftas

Place a pan on over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil then add the lamb koftas to the pan, try not to over crowd the pan. Cook them for about 5-8 minutes depending on the size of them. Make sure they are cooked through but don’t leave them on the pan to cook as they will dry out.

Add a little oil to a pan over medium heat, then add the onions and pinch of salt. Let this cook for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a further 3 minutes. Place this a bowl and add in the spices. Once this has cooled add this to the lamb mince along with an egg. Add the chopped herbs, salt, pepper and lemon juice, mix this really well. To check if the seasoning is to your liking, place a pan on over medium to high heat, add a little oil then add a small bit of the mixture. Cook it for about 5 minutes. Taste it, and adjust the seasoning to the mixture if needed. Take some of the mixture and roll it into a small oval shaped ball and place this on a tray. Repeat until all of the mixture is gone. If you have time cover the tray with cling film and leave in the fridge overnight.

For the mint yogurt

In a bowl mix the garlic, mint, yogurt and lemon juice, add a little slat if needed. Place the flatbread in an oven at 180º C for about five minutes before serving. To serve Add some salad leaves to the warm flat bread, then some pickles, some lamb koftas and then generously drizzle some mint yogurt over, you can serve it as it is or roll it up to form a kebab. Ar thaitin an abairt sin leat? Níor thaitin? Mise ach an oiread. Agus sin mar a bhí an leabhar ar fad. Abairtí fada le camóga ar fud na háite. Abairtí nach raibh i gceart ar chor ar bith ó thaobh gramadach nó poncaíocht de. Agus seo ó foilsitheoir mór le rá. Ní dóigh liom go raibh na botúin chéanna sa leabhar eile a léas ón nduine seo, nó ní leanfainn ar aghaidh á léamh go dtí an deireadh. Ach, níos tábhachtaí ná sin – ní BOTÚIN a bhí iontu; bhíodar ann d’aon ghnó. Ní stíl a bhí i gceist, cosúil le stíl Roddy Doyle nó Irvine Welsh. Tuigimid gur stíl atá ann nuair atá sé leanúnach agus tríd an saothar ar fad, ach an chuma ar an ngramadach agus poncaíocht sa leabhar seo ná an chuma a chítear sna laethanta seo i dtéacs nó ar, “Facebook;” é sin le rá, EASPA poncaíochta agus gramadaí. “Stream of consciousness,” a ghlaofá air níos mó ná abairt – gan camóg; gan lán-stad; gan fiú bheith briste síos mar abairtí. Sin an zeitgeist – rialacha traidisiúnta ar leataobh ana-chuid den am. Agus ní theastaíonn uaim bheith mar P.C. Plod, ach tá sé i bhfad níos éasca míniú a bhaint as rud éigin nuair atá sé scríofa i gceart. Tá an rud céanna ag tarlúint le teachtaireachtaí téacs – bhíos ag obair sa rannóg raidió ar feadh roinnt mhaith blianta, agus ós na cinn a tháinig isteach go cláracha éagsúla thar an tréimhse sin, bhí sé soiléir go raibh caighdeán poncaíochta i measc an phobail ghinearálta ag titim. Ach an chúis ionaidh í má dhéanann foilsitheoir idirnáisiúnta an rud céanna?!

Beidh, is dócha, ana-cuid daoine ag léamh an leabhair seo a léas, agus má ghlactar le caighdeán íseal – níos mó; má chuirtear i leabhar agus scaiptear é, glacfaidh daoine leis gur seo an caighdeán anois. Cén luach a bhaintear le bheith ag foghlaim faoi chúrsaí poncaíochta nó gramadaí ar scoil a thuilleadh? Gabh mo leith scéal ach cuireann sé an goimh dearg orm (n’fheadar an bhfuil sé sin soiléir agus ‘ceart agat; ní thógann sé mórán!). Ní ionann rud éigin a bheith i gceart agus na sluaite á dhéanamh. Táim ag déanach obair dheonach le carthanacht darb ainm, “Fighting Words,” le b’fhéidir deich mbliana anuas. Is eagraíocht iontach í a spreagann cruthaitheacht agus samhlaíocht leanaí. Déantar iarracht gan struchtúr scoile a bheith ar na ceardlainne. Agus mar sin tá sé intuigthe nach gceartaímid gramadach nó poncaíocht na leanaí agus iad i mbun scríbhneoireachta. Ach nuair atáimid fásta suas agus tar éis teacht tríd an gcóras oideachais, go pointe áirithe nach ceart dúinn cloí le riail nó dhó ionas go dtabharfaimid míniú cruinn ar rud éigin? Ionas go mbeidh sé soiléir ón gcéad dul síós de cad atá i geist? Cuimhnigh ar an abairt cáiliúil seo; “The panda – eats shoots and leaves.” Agus an ceann seo; “The panda – eats, shoots and leaves.” Sin an difríocht a dhéanann camóg beag bídeach amháin. Tháinig deireadh leis an Apostrophe Protection Society (is ea – bhí a leithéid ann!) i 2019 de bharr, “Ignorance and laziness.” I 2013, d’fhógair an cabhlach sna S.A. go rabhadar ag fáil réidh le riail – ceann a dúirt go raibh gá le gach teachtaireacht agus téacs cumarsáide a bheith scríofa

The following measures will remain in place: (1) Communion can only be received in the hand for the moment. (2) Hand sanitisation is advised. Dingle Parish Message from Fr Michael: On 15th June 1997 I was ordained a priest for the diocese of Kerry by Bishop Bill Murphy. On Friday last, June 17th, family, friends and parishioners gathered in St Mary’s Church, Dingle to celebrate my Silver Anniversary. It was an occasion to celebrate our faith and many shared lively conversation and some light refreshments afterwards.

But we are people of hope. It wasn’t their own resolve that gave them new courage, it was the peace and joy that came from the Lord. The upper room was safe for the disciples like the harbour is safe for a ship. But priesthood is about leaving the safety of the shore. It is about risk and about courage. Most of all, it is about hope, because we are not on our own. In a spirit of faith, we look to the future, with a sense of hope. That sense of hope is best expressed in

the prayer of Oscar Romero. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own.”

We gathered in shared faith to give thanks. We were also celebrating the gift of priesthood, the gift of the Eucharist, the gift of faith, – your faith. Priesthood does not and cannot exist in a vacuum. It is the prayers and support of people that enlivens a vocation. In June 1997 nobody could tell what the future would hold. What I had at the time was faith in God, a desire to make his name known and the support of family and friends. As I look to the future, none of us know what the future holds. I continue to have a faith in God, a desire to make his name known, a task shared by all the baptised, and the support of family, friends and many parishioners. The journey continues. I would like to sincerely thank parishioners, former parishioners, friends and family who attended the celebration. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Mass, Bishop Ray and the concelebrating Priests, the Choir of Áine, Seán, Tommy, Bill and Peter; the musicians who played later, Joe Sheehan, Áine, Séan, Joe and Tim. Thanks for your prayers, good wishes and continued support. Míle, míle buíochas. In his homily at the Mass Fr Padraig Walsh mentioned the following. “As we look to the future we might feel like the disciples, fearful and afraid in the upper room after the resurrection.

Film Review - Top Gun : Maverick Tom Ó Neachtain Top Gun : Maverick is the long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, featuring Tom Cruise back in the lead role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. In this film, Maverick is tasked with training a group of young pilots to destroy a remote nuclear facility from the air, by executing near-impossible aerial manoeuvres. Before this film’s release, it seemed to many that it would be another un-necessary belated sequel to an 80’s classic, and unable to deliver high-octane thrills on-par with its predecessor. Thankfully, director Joseph Kosinski has fully utilised the advancements in

film-making technology since the original hit screens, delivering tense and truly unforgettable aerial action throughout. The cinematography in the film’s flight sequences is stunning visually, and gives the audience a truly immersive perspective on the air-borne action. This is aided by stellar sounddesign, which conveys the high energy and speed of these skirmishes beautifully. These perfectly executed action set-pieces out-shine any flaws in the film’s narrative, and showcase some of the best practical action in recent memory. The film’s young cast is packed with standouts, who do the necessary character-work to make their somewhat basic characters engaging and entertaining. Cruise hasn’t lost the charisma which made Maverick such an endearing character in the original, and his committed performance gives the film’s emotional moments

surprising weight and poignance. Unfortunately, this film’s narrative isn’t quite as polished as its action sequences. Many of the film’s scenes are drawn-out for no discernible reason, and a few plot-beats feel superfluous to the story. However, the emotionally satisfying climax more than makes up for any narrative short-comings, and delivers an action extravaganza that will leave any audience cheering. Top Gun : Maverick’s story lags at times, but a truly charismatic cast and masterfully crafted aerial thrills make it this year’s Summer Blockbuster to beat. Tom Ó Neachtain is a third year student in Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne

CAMP ICA End of an era, Camp ICA has closed and an arbutus tree has been planted in the sportsfield to commemorate the wonderful people and activities associated with it. PICKLEBALL Cairdeas Camp has pickleball sessions Tuesday and Thursday 7-9pm and indoor bowls Thursdays at 4pm in the sportshall. New members welcome. Bígí linn. OBITUARY It was with shock and sadness that the people of Camp learned of the death of Dr. Paddy Rice, Cappaclough in Manitoba, Canada. Dr. Patrick, Paddy Rice now resident Doctor in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada died peacefully on June 13th, He was aged 70. Paddy is remembered with great fondness in

his native Camp, his great sense of humour, interest in everyone and everything in Camp. Paddy never forgot his roots and on every visit he called into his neighbours, who looked forward to seeing him again. Paddy was one of the cleverest scholars ever to pass through Camp School. Aged twelve, he was awarded a County Council scholarship to St. Brendan’s College, Killarney where he was a full time boarder up to the age of 18. He was only at St. Brendan's a few weeks when he received the sad news of his fathers death. He helped on the family farm for Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays. From St. Brendan’s, he went to University College Cork (UCC) to study medicine. Each summer as a student, he travelled to London, where two of his sisters lived. He worked as a porter at Whipp's Cross Hospital during the day. At night, he played the tin whistle and busked on the London Underground with three friends boasting a repertoire of four to six songs. As he described it himself, six on a good night, four on a bad night. Paddy often hitchhiked home from Cork. Whenever he was picked up, he asked the driver, Do you want me to stay silent, do you want me to talk to you or do you want me to sing you a song, one driver asked him to sing a song and Paddy remembered with pride that the driver was none other than Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners who told him he had a great way with a song.

He was a great comfort to his mother and siblings at this deeply sad time. Paddy’s love of learning never stopped. He constantly added to his medical training and qualifications. He became the flight surgeon for the local air force base and a Medical Examiner too. In 1994, he met the love of his life, Delnora and the birth of two sons Gareth and Liam made their family complete, a family he loved and was so proud of. Paddys philosophy of life, "The man who made time made plenty of it", quoted by a colleague at his funeral service says it all, Paddy was an unique human being. Ni beidh a leithéid ann arís. Go ndéana Dia trocaire ar a anam usual. Predeceased by his parents Michael (Mikey) and Mary Ann (Mae) Rice nee Finn, his brother Sean, his sister Anne, his niece Monica, his son Andre and sister-in-law Marcella. Paddy will be very sadly missed by his wife Delnora and sons Gareth and Liam, his sisters Brenda and Mary, his brothers Michael and Martin, his brothers-in law Michael, Tommy, Gareth, Charles, James and sisters-in-law Teresa, Katrina, Zelia, Euline and Emlyn and by his nieces and nephews, Gráinne, Maurice, Micheál, Anna–Maria, Michael (Sonny), Thomas, Stephen, Anne, Nicholas, Pádraig and Sarah as well as his nephews-in-law and nieces-in-law and grandnephews and grandnieces.

This musicality held him in good stead throughout his life.

SERIOUSLY

During Wren's Day celebrations 26th December, his brother Michael fondly remembers performing with Paddy acapella in Peter Daly's pub in Camp.

Doctor: You say you have a phobia of marriage,

Paddy graduated from UCC in 1975 and returned to Whipp's Cross Hospital to work on rotation across the hospital. After a couple of years, he moved to Cambridge, England, to complete his training as a general practitioner.

FUNNY

do you know what your symptoms are? Patient: I cant say I do.

He lived in Cambridge for three years before he transferred to Old Church Hospital in Romford, England. In 1981, Paddy moved to Leaf Rapids in Northern Manitoba, Canada before moving to Beausejour and then Rossburn. His next stop was Portage La Prairie. This would eventually become his home and final resting place. Throughout his life, Paddy sought out ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Just like his wide academic interests, Paddys sporting pursuits ranged from marathon running to boxing to Ukrainian dancing. Paddy was one of the original group of eight doctors who came together from different clinics across Portage to establish the Portage Clinic. This collegiate way of working suited his temperament and he was proud that this collaborative model was a success. Echoing his childhood, within a year of moving to Canada, Paddy was called back to Europe after the tragic death of his sister Anne. He returned to London and travelled home to his sister's funeral.

Ó Mhárthain

agus a cáirde.

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Thar Lear.

Caid agus iománaíocht

Is baolach gur chailleas scata sochraidí toisc go rabhas thar lear. Beannacht Dé leo go léir.

Bhí ana chluichí ann ag an deireadh seachtaine mar a mbuaidh an Ghaillimh ar Chorcaigh agus bhuaidh an Clár ar Loch Garman. Bhí leoithne gaoithe ann rud nár chuir isteach ró mhór ar an imirt. Gan dabht bhí Toní Kelly tofa ar fhoireann an Chláir agus Paul Mannion ó fhoireann na Gaillimhe. Seachtain ón nDomhnach seo chugainn a bheidh an gadadh. Mar a mheasaim, Bleá Cliath agus Ard Mhacha an dá fhoireaan is mó go mbeadh aon eagla orm rompa agus ní gá Maigh Eo ná Doire a fhágaint gan áireamh. ‘Cé aige a bheidh an lá?’ Ciarraí. Bás Tagann an bás go gránna gan taise gan iarraidh agus síneann an óg agus aosta. Bhíos an- mhór le Daryl Broe trócaire ar a anam ó Bhleá Cliath ach a bhí ag cur fé i gCorca Dhuibhne le blianta agus i mBhaile an Chaladh le tamall. Fear mór i gcúis na Gaolainne b’ea é. Bhíodh scannáin idir-naisiúnta á dtaispeáint aige i Siar ó Thuaidh atá ar chúl tábhairne Uí Chatháin ar an mBuailtín. Méala mór a bhás dá dheartháracha Damian agus Dimitri, a ghaolta agus a cháirde. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a anam Gaelach. Fuair Aina Davis, a bhí ag cur fuithi í nGarrai na dTor, bás in Oispidéal Ollscoile Chorcaí le déanaí. An- cheoltóir ar an bheidhlín agus an viola b’ea Aina. Sa bhFrainnc a bhíos lem bhean. Bhí toghcháin ar siúl le linn dúinn bheith ann, an céad babhta vótála cúpla lá tar éis dúinn cuan a bhaint amach. Toghcháin don Assemblé Nationale (ar nós an Dáil) a bhí i gceist. An céad lá vótála bhí an cuma ar an scéal go mbeadh slua maith teachtaí ag an Uachtarán Macron, cé go mbeadh scata mór caillte aige ón mbabhta deireannach. Tar éis an dara babhta vótála an Domhnach seo caite ní raibh móramh ag Morcon ná ag aon phártí. Fé Macron anois é comhrialtas a bhunú nó dul agus toghachán eile bheith ann. Dála an scéil ní vótáil ach leath nó 50% dos na vótóirí, agus is beag fotharaga a bhí ann an céad Domhnach vótála cé go raibh ana-chuid iarrthóirí ag seasamh i ngach toghcheantar. Tá fadhbanna éagsúla eacnamaíoch ag furmhór tíortha na hEorpa de thoradh cladhaireacht na Rúise san Úcráin. Tá súil againn go mbeidh fuascailt. Cois trá i Royan a bhíos. Bhí sé an- bhreá an chéad lá ach ní ró -fhada gur tháinig raiste báistí, braonacha móra. Báthadh go craiceann mé. Bhí gach lá níos brothallaí ná a chéile as san amach agus an lá a fhágamair roimh lóin, bhí sé 38 °C agus 40 °C tréis dinnéir. Faid is bhíomair thall thugamair geábh ar Charnac mar a bhfuil iontaisí agus iontais ó siar amach – glaoann an baile ‘baile na ndraoithe’ ar féin.. Bhuaileamair isteach dtí ár gcairde i mBulat Pestivien, an dream a bhí páirteach linn os cionn 30 bliain ó shoin i mbunú cleamhnas idir 5 commune sa Bhriotáin agus cúig ceantar i gCorca Dhuibhne. Bhí bia, deoch, agus ceol rómhainn, agus fíor-chaoin fáilte. Ortha siúd a bhí ann bhí an cláirseoir agus amhránaí aitheanta Áine Auffret, Alain Goutal, a bhean chéile Caití agus a deirfiúr, Áine Bourdon agus a fear céile Pascal. Bhí ceol Gaelach, Gailíseach agus Briotánach le clos.

Ar bhád mór a thánamair abhaile. Bhí na céadtha ar bord, mar a bhí agus sinn ag dul sall. Má tá cúrsaí maireachtála ag luí ar mhuintir na hÉireann is baolach go bhfuil dar liom breis agus leath an daonra ag tógaint saoire sna tiortha teo nó na cuanta snáimh san iarthar agus theas. Tá fadhbanna airgid ag beagnach gach tir san Eoraip. Sin é Putin againn. Is diail an mac an saol. Jackal Chonac i nuachtán thall go bhfuil an t-ainmhí an Jackal tagtha anoir dtí an bhFrainnc. Is dócha go ngeobhaidh sé chugainn. Tá eirbeall scuabach ar an Jackal ach níl sé chomh fada le eirbeall an mhadra rua. Is gnáthaí gur amach sa bhfiantas a bhíonn a gcomhluadar. D’íosfaidis cearca, uibhe, éanlaithe eile, uain lag, coiníní, giorraithe. Itheann siad feithidí, agus conabarlaigh. Aon áit a mbeadh bosca brúscair gairid dóibh dhéanfaí iniúcadh maith ar. Tá carabat deas geal ar an Jackal agus fionna donn dubh agus marcanna geala ar a dhrom. Tá cuma dheas comhrach air. Is sa mheán-oirthear an Ind agus an Túirc atá furmhór na Jackals. Deirtear nach baol do aon duine an Jackal.
