Manx Shearwater Alert! The BirdWatchIreland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings. What are they? web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months. Why are they stranding in our towns and villages? and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs. What can you do if you find one? it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild. Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you! What is mucus anyway but phlegm, and what does phlegm do? It acts as a lubricant to help food pass through your digestive system, and it traps bacteria, viruses, pollen, dust and mould in your lungs to keep you healthy. Under normal circumstances, food should not make you produce more phlegm. However, if you have a food allergy or consume a food that causes your body to produce histamine, your body may react by increasing phlegm production… so is histamine the problem? And round we go again. If you suspect dairy foods make your symptoms worse, eliminate and see if it makes a difference. At the end of the day, the foods mentioned earlier provide the nutrients to support the integrity of respiratory linings, without question. Dairy foods, even if they are now not considered the problem, there are not the solution either. One food that certainly makes matters worse is salt. Salt encourages fluid retention which can make breathing more difficult. Use a little real sea salt in cooking if needed but avoid adding salt to meals at the table as well as restricting salty foods, deli meats and processed foods. Interestingly, salt therapy and saline rinsing of the nose have shown great benefits to lung and respiratory health and offer the best use of salt for anyone with respiratory disorders.
The foods in season during Autumn nourish the Lungs and their related organs - the eyes and large intestine. Betacarotene-rich foods such as carrots, butternut squash and pumpkin will soon be at their best. The orange pigment of these vegetables is due to betacarotene, a flavonoid most beneficial to the linings of the intestines, nose, the airways and lungs, offering strength and support to their integrity and also an important nutrient to eye health. Supporting these organs now, will offer resistance to the bugs and viruses typically associated with this time of year – tummy bugs, flus, colds, respiratory viruses and chest ailments.
Earth energy moves along in a cyclical manner throughout the year and as it flows through us during Autumn it nourishes and tonifies our Lungs.
6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo Breathe Easy this Autumn Irene Ní Fhlannúra Autumn, the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” as John Keats described it way back in September 1819 and it still remains a fitting description. Despite all the news of climate change, the Seasons have remained fairly consistent as far as Mother Nature is concerned. In Autumn, Earth energy begins its journey downwards, shifting from the high of Summer to the low of Winter. In between, we really experience two seasons, Late Summer and Autumn, but our modern calendars say otherwise. With each of the five seasons, different organ systems are nourished through the food in season, the weather outside, our natural environment and our innate ability to go with the flow. It is widely accepted in Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine that to truly attune with the seasons is the best prevention of all disease, discord and disharmony!
A common belief is that dairy foods increase mucus production and should be avoided in those with chronic respiratory disorders. However, the research surrounding this is sketchy and confusing to say the least.
Now is the best time to give those airbags some TLC, they work hard, taking up to 25,000 breaths a day! For many Irish people lung health is a struggle. We have the 4th highest prevalence of Asthma in the World with almost one in ten people suffering from this chronic condition. We are also high in the rankings for lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Throw into the mix bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and seasonal allergies and it becomes very apparent that our lungs are besieged and in desperate need of help!
Flavours associated with Autumn are pungent - bay leaves, capers, caraway seeds, cardamom, chives, cinnamon, cloves, cumquats, dill, fennel, leek, oregano, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, turmeric, watercress, wheat germ, cabbage, turnip, ginger, horseradish, pepper, onions, garlic and chillies. These foods are drying, complementing the season and helping to reduce dampness in the body which is a precursor to most respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Of course, it is not a surprise that these flavours also complement the foods of the season and prepares us for the heartier cooking of the Winter months.
Beans, seeds and nuts added to slow-cooked meals provide omega 3, magnesium and B vitamins. Omega 3 is well-known for its antiinflammatory properties and used widely for joint and heart health. It also helps to reduce allergy mechanisms which trigger asthma and improves linings of the eyes, respiratory tract and the digestive tract. Eskimo people have a low prevalence of all lung disease and this is mainly due to the high intake of omega 3 through fish oil and blubber found in their native diet. Magnesium is particularly beneficial to lungs as it helps to dilate airways and relax the muscles around the bronchi thus reducing spasms associated with Asthma. Researchers also found a significant association between high blood levels of folic acid and a 30% reduced risk in inflammatory proteins, 40% reduced risk in wheezing, 31% reduced risk of having atopy and 16% reduced risk in asthma compared to those with the lowest levels of folic acid. Black beans and dark green/black lentils are a wonderful source of dietary folic acid. Other great foods for the lungs, and indeed the eyes and large intestine include dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and dark skinned fruits (like blackberries and plums) – all of which make a perfect meal for Autumn days!
Breathing techniques such as Buteyko improve the outcome of many respiratory diseases and warrant inclusion in the overall management of lung disease. More recently, I heard about “SingSong” through www. copd.ie – a breathing and singing programme for those with COPD and other chronic respiratory problems which can be accessed in the comfort of your own home – well worth checking out.
The bottom line is that there is a reason for every season, and whether you have an existing respiratory condition or want to reduce your risk, the foods and flavours of Autumn are there to help, so eat up and breathe easy.

Women in farming are urged to take the time to check what Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) contributions they have made to date and ensure that they are making a contribution when carrying out tax returns this year. As the year heads for its closing months, consideration should be given to reviewing your PRSI record of contributions to date. This is important in terms of planning for your future entitlement to the state pension and may provide the opportunity to enhance future benefits. Many female farmers who are retiring discover that they are not entitled to the state contributory pension, as they have not made sufficient PRSI contributions despite having worked on the farm all their lives.

And Finally…………. With schools back this week, we just wish all students/pupils, and teachers the best of luck for the year. School is good and it’s fun. And where else can you go to spend the whole day with your friends. You are like a Band of Brothers (and sisters). Enjoy the year, especially those in Exam Years.
Dairy Farmers in West Kerry recently came together to hear how their use of energy has been analysed and to see what steps they can take to become more energy efficient. The group had commissioned an Energy Master Plan (EMP) to calculate their existing energy practices and from this analysis, identify ways to become more energy efficient. An EMP is an essential first step of any Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) to baseline their usage. At a general meeting held in Dingle, the group heard these key findings and
FEMALE FARMERS URGED TO CHECK PRSI CONTRIBUTIONS
In addition to this, farmers may be discouraged by the criteria outlined under the Extensive Grazing Measure, an option that is very similar to the Low Input Permanent Pasture measure under the Green Low-carbon Agri-environmental Scheme (GLAS). The key difference between the two is, that what was two separate actions for two separate payments under GLAS, is now one action in UnderACRES.GLAS a farmer that had 5ha of low input pasture could get a payment of over €1,500 and if there was a watercourse on it, they could get a further payment of €150/m to fence off that. Now that payment will be potentially €1,000 for what could have been €2,500 the last time around. This is quite a disappointing development, and one of many.
• Agricultural diesel is the single biggest energy consumer (52%) and costing circa €750,000. (If biomethane could be substituted for diesel, there is a substantial market opportunity.)
Farmers need to know more about this actual scheme and then they need to be made familiar with these species.
•recommendations:In2019,thisfarming community used energy of over 10,000 MWh (generating 2,900 tonnes of CO2) and costing circa €1 million.
Some farmers who have been lucky enough to get into the REAP [Results based Environmental Agri-Pilot] scheme and they’ve gotten a taste for it. A lot of those species are there particularly in older-type pastures that haven’t received any spraying or slurry.
5,004 low-income farmers across the country qualified for the Farm Assist payment last year, while this figure was 4,925 farmers received the payment in 2020. Last year, 4,549 men and 455 women received the means-tested social welfare payment. The data shows that 4,819 recipients were Irish nationals, 149 had UK nationality, 25 were from EU countries and 11 were listed as other nationalities. Donegal was the county with the highest number of Farm Assist recipients at 979, which is nearly a fifth of the total number of recipients. 733 farmers in Mayo got the payment, followed by 485 in Galway. Dublin had the lowest number of recipients at four. Two recipients were listed as ‘other’, which the department explained were recipients who are abroad or their county is unknown.
The next step Is to hold over 100 individual surveys of every farm in the membership. The purpose of these is to understand each dairy farm’s unique aspects and quantify their actual energy use to decide which climate action activities are best suited to becoming more energy efficient. Further funding has been secured by WKDFSEC from SEAI and Kerry Agribusiness to begin this work.
10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo Farming News Louis Murchan WEST KERRY DAIRY FARMERS - ENERGY MASTER PLAN
CALL FOR FODDER SCHEME EXTENSION. The application date for this scheme has closed but the scheme is not over. Fodder cut up to 5th September is eligible for payment. However, with the long dry spell in August, and the lower fertilizer usage, due to severe cost increases, it may now be time to extend this cut-off date beyond 5th September. Conditions are ripe for silage production currently, and there is a lot of activity out there, at present. Soil conditions are rather dry at the moment, but with rain due next week, grass growth should increase., It would only make sense to extend the cutting deadline, as there was little point in forage harvesting for the past few weeks. Lets hope that sense will prevail among the Mandarins of Ag House, and elsewhere.
• Retrofitting of farm dwelling houses to B2 could reduce energy usage by 1,400 MWh and 360 tonnes of CO2. These and other findings were presented to the assembly by representatives from DCSix Technologies, the consultancy company contracted to undertake the group’s EMP. This report now acts as a baseline of overall energy demand of the SEC and also contains a roadmap for the sector to become more energy efficient, in cost-effective and practical ways. This research work was supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) through funding and advice. The finalised EMP containing these recommendations will be published on www. dinglepeninsula2030.com in the near future. This group of West Kerry farmers benefited from being part of SEAI’s nationwide Sustainable Energy Community network and is the first in Ireland dedicated to a particular sector (dairy farming, in this case). Kerry Agribusiness, SEAI, ESB and Dovea Genetics were initial backers of the group and provided funding that has helped get the SEC to this point.
• Heat Recovery systems used in a dairy parlour could lead to more than halving the energy required for heating water, leading to potential savings of over €800 per annum.
KERRY IFA IN TURMOIL With the Kerry IFA currently in turmoil, is it now time for them to get their house in order. Their vice-chairman recently resigned and left the organisation, this following a following a formal complaint being made to IFA headquarters in July. The complaint related to a text message circulated regarding certain matters arising from the activities of the Kerry County IFA executive. Not very clear, but worrying! Although IFA HQ have confirmed that existence of the complaint, they haven’t elaborated on it, or identifying who made it. Apart from confirming that former Chief Executive of Greyhound Racing Ireland, Gerard Dollard was retained to investigate the issue, they have made no other comment. We await further news.
• Technology such as Solar PV panels will reduce energy costs, where the meter between the dairy parlour and the domestic dwelling is shared.
COMPLEX NATURE OF ACRES TO DETER SOME FARMERS – ADVISOR
In addition, the cost of closing off watercourses and investing in products like solar-operated water drinkers is expensive. Farmers will have to spend a lot of money investing in closing off water courses and purchasing products such as solar-operated water drinkers for “a relatively low Farmerspayment.areurged to remember that taking up the right actions for their farming system will be key over the next five years, and advised people to take the time to assess their options. The big thing is it has to suit their farm. They need to sit down with their advisor and go through all the options that they can take on the scheme and what suits their farm and their farming landscape best,” he concluded.
Farmers considering opting into the Agri Climate Rural Environmental Scheme (ACRES) may be put off by the detailed nature of it, some agricultural advisors have warned. Many of the measures in the scheme are results-based and are calculated through a complex scorecard system. This method could deter some farmers who are considering opting into the scheme, according to Longfordbased farm advisors, Paul Belton and Thomas Quinn. Speaking recently Mr Belton outlined some of the areas that may prompt hesitation among Tofarmers.qualify for the Low Input Grassland (LIG) option under the scheme, fields must meet a number of criteria, including the sowing of a minimum of four grass species as well as ryegrass. However, many farmers will not be familiar with the grasses that must be included, which may cause confusion.

Single use plastics create unnecessary waste. Please try to avoid using plastic drink bottles, drinking straws, single use plastic coffee cups and unnecessary plastic bags and wrapping. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance encourages visitors to carry refillable drinks bottles and coffee cups for drinks on the go. Many outlets are switching to compostable containers and wrapping for food so please do support them.

Farranflaherty Catherine O’Connor, 52, was a resident in a house in Farranflaherty. She was the ‘Matron of the Workhouse’ and a widow.
Johanna Adams, 63 and a widow, lived on Main Street and her occupation was ‘Draper and Publican’. Her daughters Annie, 23 and Alice 21 were her ‘Assistants’ and both were single. All spoke Irish and English
Margaret Ashe, 50, also resident in Farrenflaherty, gave her occupation as ‘Caretaker Dispensary’. She was a widow with four sons. Dykegate Lane Mary McKenna, 50, was a ‘Shopkeeper’ in Dykegate Lane. She was a widow, the mother of six children and had a two month-old grandson. Her daughter Mary was an ‘Assistant Teacher’.
Farranalickeen/Annascaul Bridget Pembroke was a widow living in Farranalickeen with two sons and a daughter. Bridget declared her occupation as ‘Labourer’ and her daughter Nonie made the same declaration. Unusual.
Note: While this and the last issue dealt with ‘Women at Work’ in 1901 many of the occupations recorded were not singular or unusual. For instance, there were 21 seamstresses in the West Kerry area and almost 50 dressmakers

There were nine coastguard families in Emlagh West in 1901. The Chief Boatman was Thomas May, 46. His eldest daughter, Elizabeth (23), gave her occupation as ‘Mothers Help’. She and her parents were born in England but her six siblings were born in Ireland.

There were six other people in the house that night: her sister, a niece, a nephew, two servants and a visitor. Nora Moore, 18 and single was the visitor and her occupation was ‘Governess’. Kilfountain Louisa Henry, 16, lived in Kilfountain and gave her occupation as ‘Clerkess’. This is an archaic form of female clerk which was commonly used in Scotland – maybe it still is. Louisa was a niece of the householder Maryanne Burke, 44 and a widow, and she was a ‘Farmer’. Her daughter Louisa Burke, 21 and single, was a ‘Dressmaker’.
While there are numerous washerwomen recorded in the census records in West Kerry, only two people declared their occupation as ‘Laundress’ and they were closely related. They were Johanna Kaye, 53, a widow who lived in The Colony in Dingle and her daughter-in-law Mary, 30, who lived in the same house along with her husband and three year-old daughter.
Ballincolla Maggie Long, 22 and single was the daughter of Thomas Long, 50, and his wife Johanna, 40. Her occupation was ‘Dairy Maid’, one of five women to record that job in the census.
Gate Street (Goat Street) Ellen Sullivan, 64 and a widow, was a lodger in a house in Goat Street and gave her occupation as ‘Seller of Milk’ on the census form. Ardbeg (Stradbally) Katie Fitzgerald, 21 and single, recorded her occupation as ‘Creamery Girl’. John Street Mary McKenna, 27 and single, was a visitor to a house in John Street and her occupation was ‘Milliner’. The head of the house was Margaret McKenna, 30 and single, who was a ‘Shopkeeper’. There was no record of a family connection on the census form. Both women spoke Irish and English.
The Colony
Nora Duckham, 19 and single, lived a few houses away from the above shop on John Street and she was also a ‘Milliner’. We’ll meet her, and her family, again in another issue. Main Street.
Sarah McClean, 50, lived in Murreagh and was the head of the household. Her occupation was ‘Licensed dealer in Wine & Spirits’. She was married but no mention of a husband in the census form. He may have been absent or a member of the R.I.C. Sarah was a member of the Church of Ireland as was her sister-in-law Kathleen McClean, 32 and single who was a ‘Hospital Nurse’.
Johanna Curran, 38, lived on The Mall in Dingle. She was married with four sons and a daughter – the youngest was 3 and the eldest was 13. There is no mention of a husband on the census form. Her occupation was ‘Victualler’.

Mr Kelly heard how trial projects within Corca Dhuibhne 2030 have gone on to inform policy and best practice. ESB Networks ran a number of trials under the name ‘Dingle Project’ to understand the impact of clean energy enabling technologies like solar PV panels, Heat Pumps, Batteries (to store excess solar energy) and EV charging on the electricity
Thenetwork, objective of ESB Networks electric vehicle (EV) trial was to understand the impact of electric vehicle charging on the electricity network. 17 cars were provided to members of the public who drove over 350,000km over the year. The results show that EVs really are suitable for most journeys undertaken by people living in rural communities like ours. Around half of the participants had or said they would purchase an EV or else explore options to replace their petrol or diesel car.

Seán Kelly MEP visited Dingle on August 22nd where he was meeting colleagues from ESB Networks, talking about their involvement in the Corca Dhuibhne/ Dingle Peninsula 2030 initiative. Dingle Hub Manager Deirdre de Bhailís also gave the Member of the European Parliament an overview of this initiative and all else that Dingle Hub is involved in, both in Corca Dhuibhne and on a national level.
One of the ambassadors for this Dingle Project was Lispole farmer Dinny Galvin, who had his family farmhouse upgraded with renewable and clean energy technologies e.g Solar PV System, Air Source Heat Pumps and a Smart EV charger for his electric vehicle. Dinny welcomed the Ireland South MEP onto his farm to see this technology. He also showed them a heat exchange system that he invested in for his dairy parlour which helps significantly with energy efficiency. “I’ve been blown away by the amount of positive activity at Dingle Hub! Particularly the engagement with the local community, the positive spin-offs for people in these communities and above all the contributions towards emissions reduction and our national climate targets.”
Thug Seán Kelly BPE cuairt ar an Daingean ar 22ú Lúnasa, áit ar bhuail sé le comhghleacaithe de chuid Líonraí BSL, ag labhairt faoina mbaint leis an tionscnamh Corca Dhuibhne/Dingle Peninsula 2030. Thug Bainisteoir Ginearálta an Mhoil, Deirdre de Bhailís, cur síos don mBall de Pharlaimint na hEorpa ar an tionscnamh seo agus gach rud eile lena bhfuil an Mol bainteach, i gCorca Dhuibhne agus ag an leibhéal náisiúnta araon. Chuala an tUasal Kelly conas mar atá tionscadail thrialacha mar chuid de Chorca Dhuibhne 2030 tar éis dul ar aghaidh chun tionchar a imirt ar pholasaí agus dea-chleachtas. In Eanáir 2021 sheol Líonraí BSL triail bhliana ar fheithiclí leictreacha (FL). B’é cuspóir an triail phobail seo ná tuiscint a fháil ar thionchar luchtú feithiclí leictreacha ar an líonra leictreach. Cuireadh 17 carr ar fáil do bhaill den phobal a thiomáin breis agus 350,000 km iontu thar thréimhse Fuairbliana.an triail amach go bhfuil Flanna oiriúnach i gcomhair formhór de na turasanna á bhíonn á dtógáint ag daoine ina gcónaí i bpobail tuaithe ar nós Chorca Duibhne. Ar thabhairt a gcarr thar n-ais ag deireadh na bliana, dúirt timpeall leath de na rannpháirtithe go rabhadar tar éis nó chun FL a cheannach, nó féachaint ar na féidearthachtaí timpeall ar a gcarr peitril nó díosail a mhalartú. Bhí an feirmeoir ó Lios Póil, Dinny Galvin, ar dhuine de na hambasadóirí do Thionscal Chorca Dhuibhne, agus déanadh tigh feirme a theaghlaigh a uasghrádú le teicneolaíochtaí fuinnimh ghlain agus inathnuaite, m.sh. Córas Painéal Gréine, Pumpaí Teasa Aer go hUisce, agus luchtairí FL Cliste. Chuir Dinny fáilte roimh an BPE do Dheisceart Éireann agus foireann Líonraí BSL ar a fheirm chun an teicneolaíocht seo a fheiscint. Anuas air sin, thaispeáin sé córas malartaithe teasa dóibh a dhein sé infheistiú ann dá pharlús déiríochta, córas a chabhraíonn go suntasach maidir le héifeachtacht fuinnimh. The card is completely compostable and an alternative to keeping it on display is to plant it. Yes, these cards can turn into a plant with a little TLC! 2. Plant the card in soil (in a pot or in your garden)

Labhair na Fallaí Is mór an onóir dom a bheith anseo i Scoil Naomh Breanndán – Seana Scoil an Chuasa mar a tugtar air anois, an lá iontach seo. Táimid ag cuimhneamh ar ár muintir, múinteoirí agus scoláirí agus éinne a ghaibh thar doras isteach ó osclaíodh í sa bhliain 1895 go dtí go ndúnadh í sa bhliain 1967. Tá an scoil cóirithe go snasta….. Dá labharfadh na fallaí linn nach mó scéal a bheadh le clos againn. Ach labharann na fallaí linn inniu tríd an dteaspántas iontach, suimiúil, stairiúil seo. Buíochas ó chroí leis na héinne go bhfuil rian a láimhe ar an obair seo. This old school was our play centre long ago. Today it is a beautiful restored building enhanced by the magnificent charts produced by Máirín Uí Shé as a testament to the heritage of the Seana Scoil. Buíochas ó chroí as an obair iontach atá le feiscint inniu. This old school holds memories precious to each one of us. I can actually smell the chalk and see the cláiríní beaga. My cousins and I were given eochair mhór na scoile on many a wet summer’s day and we played here on the harmonium and with the mercury from the tall press, running it through our fingers. Tá an seana chlogín agam i gcónaí. Clogín mo sheana mháthar a buailtí go minic gach lá sa scoil seo, ag glaoch, ag glaoch agus ag glaoch! Clogín a buailtí go minic i rith na laethanta saoire chomh maith chun glaoch orainne chun dinnéir as an bportach. Buaileadh an clogín seo aríst inniu le linn aifrinn ag ár gceiliúradh. Nach iontach. Dia libh. - Úna Cox (Gar iníonn do Mhaidhc Ó Caomháin (Kavanagh) agus dá bhean Mary - "An Mrs").

About the Language Vitality Initiative at the Smithsonian
Are you an Irish speaker interested in creating language learning videos for other families? The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and Tús Maith are seeking children and adults to act out scripted scenes in Irish for an online language learning video series.
Tá na scripteanna cruthaithe ag Máire Ruiséal, agus tá siad bunaithe ar Ghaschaint le Úna Láwlor agus Wendy Shea, foilsithe ag an nGúm. Tá na comhráití simplí agus spórtúil agus múnlaítear úsáid teanga i suíomhanna clainne éagsúla. Clúdófar dul ar scoil, obair bhaile agus ag lorg stocaí! Is féidir script a thriail anseo le beirt thuismitheoir ag comhrá ag geataí na scoile.
With Indigenous and minoritized languages under threat, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage's Language Vitality Initiative supports community-driven language reclamation efforts. Our research and programming promotes language use in new and traditional contexts and strengthens engagement in cultural heritage wellness. We work with digital and emerging media to promote unique voices and worldviews. We seek to educate new generations of community language practitioners and linguists through informal and formal workshops and institutes. All our work is used to educate majority-language users about the benefits of living in a multilingual world.
The dialogue scripts for the videos were created by Máire Ruisael and are based on the book Gaschaint: Irish Phrases Throughout the Day by Úna Lawlor and Wendy Shea. The dialogues are simple and fun and model language use for different types of family-life scenarios. The scripts cover getting to school, finishing homework, and finding socks! You can try out a script about two parents chatting at school gates.

Seeking Irish Language Speakers for Fun Family Video Project
The nonprofit organizes language-based play groups, home language visits to assist parents in their efforts to raise bilingual children, and assists non-Irish-speaking partners to gain language skills. No acting experience is required.
Tús Maith will film the scripted family interactions in and around Corca Dhuibhne, Ireland. The instructional videos will be available on their YouTube channel. Final subtitled videos will support families in their language-learning journey with pronunciation and phrasing.

Níl sé éasca – agus níl sé nádúrtha, ó thaobh an “Pack mentality” thuasluaite de gan glacadh le hiarratas nuair nach bhfuilimid céad faoin gcéad faoi, ach b’fhéidir go mbeimís go léir níos fearr as dá ndéanfaimís é. Ní bheadh pota teannais ar suanbhruith, ullamh le pléascadh am ar bith. Tiocfaidh daoine ar réiteach eile –b’fhéidir ceann níos fearr! - sula i bhfad má tá sé tábhachtach. Agus muna bhfuil, bhuel, nach maith an rud é nár ghlac tú leis. Déanfaidh siad dearmad ort, agus tusa tar éis a bheith thar a bheith suaite ag prapáil don bhFocal Mór a rá! Roghnaíos an t-ábhar seo an tseachtain seo mar chuas isteach sa phluais mór dorcha scanrúil sin agus thugas freagra “Diúltach” do dhuine éigin le déanaí (mar a thuigimid anois nach bhfuil diúltach i ndáiríre). Bheinn in ann an rud a bhí á lorg acu á dhéanamh, agus fiú seans go mbainfinn taitneamh as. Ach an íobairt a bheadh á dhéanamh agam ná am luachmhar a chailliúnt, agus gan luach a chur ar mo chuid scileanna – atá forbartha leis na blianta. Ach ní gá leithscéal mar sin a bheith agat. Ní thitfidh an tóin as an ndomhan pé cúis atá agat. Beidh tú fós anseo, mar atáim, agus seans fiú go mbeidh tú bródúil asat féin, mar atáim. Cuir an luach céanna ort féin is a chuireann tú ar iarrataisí daoine eile. Seans go gcuirfidh an “Titim amach” ionadh ort.
Nóta beag: Comhghairdeachas do Dheirdre ó Nature’s Knowledge, siopa speisialta sa Daingean, atá tar éis éirí as chun taitneamh a bhaint as an saol. Braithimid uainn na tairgí fíor-álainne a chur sí ar fáil, ach tá Deirdre ag rá “Yes” léi féin – agus go n-éirí go geal léi. Hup! VENTRY, CO. West Kerry Live 31 Léargas an Lae le Louise Nic an tSionnaigh le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne – Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar
Is cuimhin liom nuair a rinne cara liom cinneadh go raibh sí chun freagra dearfach a thabhairt do gach iarratas a fuair sí ar feadh bliana. Bhí sí mar a bheadh creatlach ar deireadh. Ach by Daid, d’fhoghlaim sí conas “Ní hea” / “No” a rá, agus gan a bheith ag braistint ciontach. Léas alt uair amháin ag moladh roimh glacadh le hiarratas, smaoinigh ort féin – b’fhéidir go bhfuil tú ag tabhairt freagra dearfach ós ard, ach tá tú ag tabhairt “Freagra” diúltach duit féin; do chuid ama, fuinnimh agus suaimhnis. ‘Sin míloighciúil – ach éasca le déanamh. Níl ach tusa freagrach asat féin. Ní dearcadh santach nó leithleasach é seo. Mar a dheireann siad ar an eitleán, cur do mhasc féin ort roimh cúnamh a thabhairt, mar ní bheidh tú in ann gan tú féin a chaomhnú ar dtús! ‘Sé mar an gcéanna anseo. Agus is dócha de réir mar a dheireann tú, “Yes,” le héileamh éigin, méadaíonn an méid uaireanta a bheidh ort,“Tá brón orm” a rá, mar ní féidir leat gach rud a dhéanamh! So, nuair a mheastar an dá thaobh, caithfear cinneadh a dhéanamh cad ab fhearr leat.
B’fhéidir gur tusa duine des na daoine siúd a bhí i gcónaí in ann é a rá. Agus tréaslaím leat más ea. Seans gur tusa an duine sin gur dheas leatsa freagra diúltach a thabhairt (nach bhfuil diúltach ar chor ar bith, mar a chífimid), agus déanann tú iarracht, ach tugann tú an iliomad leithscéal, agus éiríonn tú saghas measctha suas, agus ar deireadh thiar thall, géilleann tú. Agus má táim tar éis cancar a bhíogadh leis an bhfocal, “Géilleann,” gabh mo leithscéal, ach tuigim do chás, mar bím de shíor ag déanamh an rud céanna. Cén fáth go ndéanaimid é seo? Róbhéasach? Róneirbhíseach? RóChaitliceach? An dtagann sé ónár gcúlra; tráth dá raibh, bhí aithne ag gach éinne in Éirinn ar a chéile (tá ruaine de sin fós ann), agus seans go raibh daoine scanraithe go scaipfeadh an scéal nach rabhadar cabhrach nó flaithiúil – agus bíonn fonn orainn go mbeidh comhluadar agus cairde againn. Nuair atáimid mar chuid de ghrúpa, scaoileann an intinn hormón darb ainm “Oxytocin” agus braithimid socair, sásta, slán sábháilte. Muna bhfuil nasc againn le grúpa le dealramh, áfach, spreagann an intinn iompar a chruthaíonn deiseanna bheith i bhfochair daoine eile nó mar chuid de ghrúpa. Is dócha gur seo cuid den gcúis go bhfuil, “Facebook,” “TikTok,” agus a leithéid chomh rathúil – braitheann siad ar nósanna na ndaoine, tuigeann siad an cine daonna, agus an fonn san a bheith ceangailte leis an sochaí; sochaí éigin, ar a laghad. Ach tá an oxytocin láidir agus cumhachtach; tá sé éasca bheith tugtha dó – cosúil le handúileach. So, deireann tú, “Ceart go leor,” in ionad, “No.” Agus, cosúil le druga ar bith, tar éis an lúchair (a mhaireann cúpla soicind nó nóiméid), tagann an ísle brí agus an cathú.
Ní hé seo an chéad uair a phléadh an t-ábhar seo. Ní an uair dheireanach ach an oiread. Ach ba mhaith liom go ndéanfá rud éigin; ní domsa, ach liomsa – samhlaigh go bhfuil duine ag lorg rud éigin uait nach bhfuil tú sásta a thabhairt (cabhair; am; scileanna, srl.); abair, “Nílim sásta” / “Ní hea” / “No.” Éasca, nach bhfuil? Nuair nach bhfuil éinne ann. Níl sé chomh héasca agus tusa i gcuideachta an iarrthóra.

Beatrice Dowling, Emer O Connor, Grace Kennedy, Lilly Herlihy and Lucy Cahill weren’t there on the night but also played during the campaign. Hayley O'Flaherty accepted the trophy on behalf of a jubilant ACDC squad and thanked Legion for a great game. The girls celebrated with pizzas and a trip to the funfair in Dingle the following night. Great craic was had! Thanks to Justin Quinlan, Katherine Skinner, Joan Moran, Mairead Clifford and Conor Slattery for their work with the group throughout a long season. Many thanks also to the parents who brought the girls to all the games and training this year.
It can over-indulge in its style and gore, but Bullet Train is still an essential stop for anyone in search of a perfectly cast, riotous, and memorable dose of Summer Blockbuster fun.

SHEEP SHOW AND PET SHOW
Tom Ó Neachtain Bullet Train is a new action-comedy caper from stunt-maestro turned director David Leitch. The film centres on pacifistic hit-man “Ladybug” who’s simple job of retrieving a briefcase on board a Japanese bullet train is complicated by a number of other shady characters, each seeking money, redemption, or revenge. From the outset, this set-up evokes classic crime jaunts along the lines of Ocean’s Eleven or even A Fish called Wanda. Thankfully, Leitch and co. manage to take a simple story outline and inject it with witty and vibrant personality. This is mainly evident in the film’s colourful cast of characters, all played with entertaining gusto by a great ensemble. Each character gets a memorable moment in the spotlight, and their conflicting personalities and out-looks on life imbue the film with some truly hilarious Despiteinteractions.game efforts from the whole cast, Brad Pitt still manages to steal the show in the lead role, gifting us with one of the funniest and most exasperatedly entertaining performances of his career. His full commitment to the film’s comedy and stunts is exceedingly fun to watch, and his comedic-timing and line-delivery are simply impeccable throughout. Pitt’s performance is perfectly in tune with the film’s frenetic sense of humour, with many great gags and one-liners dotted throughout the run-time. However, the film shines brightest when exploring its more solemn characters and plot-lines, which are given enough time to deliver emotional impact by the film’s end. As is to be expected from David Leitch, the film’s action is top-notch. Every brawl, shoot-out and sword-fight is shot fluidly with minimal editing, and the creative,
This teams nickname is ACDC (Annascaul, Castle, Dingle, Camp) and they certainly left Legion “Thunderstruck” with a brilliant display to win the Div 3 County League title last week. Facing an excellent Legion side who had beaten them by 19 points earlier in the season, the girls defied the odds to claim victory. Playing against the wind in the first half the key was hard work and driven forward from midfield by Leah Courtney and captain Hayley O Flaherty, the girls took the game to Legion. The half forward line of Ciara Slattery, Miriam Sheehan Jessy Lynch ran themselves into the ground securing possession and linking the play. Jessy was outstanding as ever in keeping the score board ticking over.

Film Review - Bullet Train
32 Corca Dhuibhne Beo O'Connor
Jessy Lynch and Robin Quinlan hit the back of the net several times as we extended our lead.
Congrats to our own girls on their "never beaten attitude" against a few really good opponents .
Panel: Aoife Kennedy, Orla Curran, Jenna Crean, Muireann Mehigan, Caoimhe Ni Curràin, Naoimh O Callaghan, Saoirse Brosnan, Amy Kennedy, Lily Falvey, Aoibhinn O Callaghan and Joint Captains Lia Sheehy and Tara Laide.
Legion ran hard at our defence but the half back line of Roise Garvey, Jude Ryan and Ciara Casey chased, tackled and made many vital interceptions. It was a tight first half but we lead 2-5 to 1-3 at half time. With the wind at our backs our girls went up another level in the third quarter. Dominating the Legion kickouts, Caoimhe Skinner kicked some excellent points and Orla Howleys speed and clever passing caused Legion constant problems.

Legion put us under huge pressure in the final quarter. At the back Niamh Hannifin made four brilliant saves and the full backline of Lauren Crean, Katie Moran and Molly McCarthy restricted Legion to just a goal and a point in the second half.
Most of all thanks to the wonderful parents who gave up their Saturday morning for such a long trip and gave tremendous support to the girls.
Nothing separated the girls as Aoibhinn and Amy tormented Vals up front but it was Orla and her defence who refused to be beaten as Annascaul recorded a 3-2 to 1-5 win over the Cork opponents.
CAMP SHEEP FAIR Camp Sheep Fair falls on Monday 19th September this year. Camp Fair is a tradition, it goes back many centuries. It kept going in times of great strife, world wars and the war of Independence, Spanish Flu and the recent pandemic and major events in history, local sheep farmers still traded at Camp Fair. They gathered their sheep and sold them at Camp Cross on Camp Fair Day. There was never a break in the tradition. They travelled from Brandon, the West of Dingle and across the hill from Keel, Castlemaine and Milltown, selling and buying sheep and making bargains late into the night.
Naomh Abàn hosted Annascaul in the third match and good scores by Lily and Lia and a few mighty saves by Aoife saw the final score: Naomh Abàn 3-2 Annascaul 5-3 Our final game was a real battle with St Vals.

if not inventive, fight choreography is utilised well for purposes of comedy or tension depending on the scene. None of the action-sequences here come close to Leitch’s work on the original John Wick, but his talent for crafting coherent, close-quarters combat mostly shines through. Sadly, the film’s direction occasionally slips into over-stylisation, which interrupts the film’s pacing and flow at numerous points. Similarly, the ultraviolence evident throughout the film, feels excessive and somewhat at odds with rest of the film’s silly but sincere tone.
Many thanks to Ger O'Callaghan, Paddy & Anne Marie Curran for the organisation and in particular the goodies for the girls afterwards which went down a treat.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more ef ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

Tom Solar..panelsKennedyortubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a Takecost.for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of en ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Ploughing
I hope you love this. Ingredients
Put the ham hock in a large pot, cover with water, bring to the boil. Empty the water and add fresh cold water, add the carrot, celery, onion, bay leaf and some of the stalks of the parsley. Allow this to simmer for about 2 ½ - 3 hours. You want the meat to be falling off the bone. Once cooked, remove from the pot and allow to cool a little. Take away the large pieces of fat from the outside. Try to leave a small but of fat, you can peel it off and chop it and add it to a large bowl. While the ham is warm tear it into small pieces. Add this to the bowl along with the mustard, vinegar and parsley. Mix this all well. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Remember if you are serving this cold, you will need to over season it.
For the dressing ½ shallot, finely diced 120ml of extra virgin olive oil 40ml of white wine vinegar 1 tbsp. wholegrain mustard Method To cook and prepare the ham
A salad that will be hard to resist. We sometimes forget to use cuts like ham hocks, they take a little cooking but are full of flavour and so versatile. You will have plenty of the ham hock mixture left over so why not have it on a sandwich the next day.
Bain Taitneamh As!!
To Placeservesome of the ham mixture on a plate, place some leaves to the side, drizzle a little dressing over the ham.

Ach nuair a bheannaigh Ruadhán an tobar a bhí in aice láimhe, b’amhlaidh a dh’iompaigh uisce an tobair ina shú milis mar a bhíodh ag sileadh ón gcrann. Dh’iompaigh Findian an sú sa tobar thar n-ais ina uisce agus mhol do Ruadhán glacadh lena thoil agus ligean don chrann a bheith ag sileadh leis arís.
Seanchas na gCrann An Leamhán Na tréithe is mó a luaitear leis an leamhán ná ná go maireann an t-adhmad i bhfad agus ná deineann uisce ná taise mórán díobhála dó. Adhmad luachmhar a bhí ann dá bharr san agus bhaintí úsáid as chun na longa agus na báid agus na píobáin uisce ba luaithe a thógaint, d’úsáidtí é fé dhroichid, chun árais a thógaint ar thalamh riascach agus chun cónraí a Luaiteardhéanamh.anleamhán
Ar chuid desna logainmneacha in Éirinn a bhfuil tagairt iontu don leamhán tá Leamhchán, Leamhach, Páirc na Leamhán, Ceapaigh an Leamháin, Cnoc na Leamhán, Doire na Leamhán agus Arda Dhoire Leamhán.

leis leis an torthúlacht agus leis an gcosaint ar mhí-ádh. Chuirtí an leamhán mórthimpeall ar thalamh feirme chun é a chosaint. Chuirtí slat sa mheadar chun ná bainfeadh an lucht sí leis an mbainne. Tá scéalta eile a deir go saolófaí leanbh slán sábháilte do bhean dá mbéarfadh sí ar chraobh den chrann agus í ag súil. Tá mórán tagairtí don leamhán sa Naomhscéalaíocht. Thugadh an leamhán agus an duilliúr úr air ana-chosaint agus ana-chothú don naomh a ghlacfadh sos fé. Ba mhinic Naomh Pádraig ag bualadh le fir chráifeacha agus é ar a thaisteal ar fud na hÉireann. Deir na scéalta gur bhunaigh sé mainistreacha i gCo. Ros Comáin agus i gCo. Mhaigh Eo, áiteanna go mbuail sé le Iarnascus agus le Secundinus agus iad beirt ag glacadh sosa fé chrainn leamháin. Tá mórán leaganacha de scéal eile a bhaineann le Cluain Mhic Nóis agus Naomh Ciarán a bhunaigh a mhainistir ann. Deirtear gur chuir lobhar darb ainm Comlach taisí naoimh i bhfolach i log i gcrann leamháin. Lá arna mháireach ar theacht chomh fada leis an gcrann dó chonaic sé go raibh an log dúnta agus na taisí i bhfolach laistigh den chrann. Ba chuma cén iarracht a dheineadh sé leis an tua ba shaothar in aisce é. Dúirt Pádraig leis go mbeadh na taisí ag teastáil ó fhear cráifeach a thiocfadh ar an láthair lá níos faide anonn. B’shin mar a bhunaigh Naomh Ciarán an mhainistir ag Cluain Mhic Nóis ar bhruach na Sionainne. I ndán a luaitear le Naomh Colmcille molann an naomh binneas cheol na gaoithe sa chrann leamháin. Tréith eile a bhaineann leis an leamhán ná an sú láidir milis a bhíonn ann. Tá scéal a bhaineann le Naomh Ruadhán ó Lothra, Contae Thiobraid Árann. Bhí crann leamháin taobh lena mhainistir a mbíodh sú milis ag sileadh uaidh agus a rogha blas á fháil uaidh ag an té a bhlaiseadh é. Ní róshásta a bhí na manaigh leis an scéal seo agus d’iarradar ar Findian stop a chur leis. D’iarr Findian, ceannaire eaglasta na tíre ag an am, ar Ruadhán comhartha na croise a dhéanamh os cionn an chrainn agus nuair a dhein, b’shin deireadh leis an sileadh ón gcrann.

BEANNACHTAÍ NA BLIANA NUA
Women's Christmas, Nollaig na mBan sometimes called Little Christmas falls on the 12th day of Christmas, 6th. January. In olden times the women took a rest on Nollaig na mBan and the men of the family cooked the meal for the family. In the Christian Calendar this is the Feastday of the Epiphany when the 3 Wise Kings came from the East to Visit the Child Jesus in Bethlehem. 3 candles lighting on a window on that night is a tradition upheld in some homes to this present day, guiding the 3 kings to the Child Jesus.

An Indomitable Spirit le Daithí Ó Corráin foilsithe ag Four Courts Press
‘By any measure, Cathal Brugha’s life was extraordinary : a member of the Gaelic League, Irish Republican Brotherhood and Irish Volunteers; a celebrated survivor of the 1916 Rising, despite multiple gunshot wounds; a crucial figure in the post-Rising reorganization of the Volunteers and Sinn Féin; speaker at the first sitting of Dáil Éireann and president pro tempore; minister for defence in the underground government during the War of Independence; passionate and acerbic opponent of the AngloIrish treaty of 1921; a reluctant participant in the Irish civil war, having tried to prevent it; and that conflict’s first high profile fatality in July 1922. Based on exhaustive research, this book challenges the often simplistic and reductive depiction of Brugha by providing a nuanced and multi-layered reappraisal of him.’

Tá an lá ag ciorrú ach go mall. Tá an óige ag tabhairt fén scoil agus scaipeadh ag teacht ar na stróinséirí nó turasóirí. Ní raibh an eagla ró mhór fén mbagairt go mbeadh toibreacha tirim agus mná tí ag gearán fén mbeagán d’uisce a bheadh sna piobáin. Mo ghraidhn do cheann tháinig teas ach ní fada ina dhiaidh a bhí an bháisteach. Is beag duine a bheadh sásta le teas ós chion 30 céim ach n‘fheadar an é gur ina thús atáimid. Bhí blianta eile is cuimhin liom go raibh scata dos na toibreacha ar an mbaile tirim ach bhí fíor uisce le fáil i gcónaí ach bheith ag faire amach. D’fhéadfaí an sprioc atá luaite linn a ghnothú gan dua ach beartas dearfa a dheanamh agus ní bheadh mórán do chiorraithe ar an bfeirmeóir. ‘Gach sá dtí ceann an cholmóra’. Tá stailc sa ghnó mar a bheadh i seana chapall. Caid Am baice ach go bhfuil an Ghaeltacht sa chluiche ceathrú ceannais an chontae idirmheanach tréis dóibh an bhearna a bhaint do fhoireann na nDeasúnach ó Oileán Chiarraí. 0-16- le 0-12. D’imir an fhoireann go maith. Bhí an chéad dhá phointe ag Éanna Ó Conchúir agus lean Brian ó Beaglaoi é go rábach. Bhí Dara Ó Sé, mar is gnáth ar fheabhas . Bhí an Ghaeltacht chun cinn le 0-8 le 0-4 ag leath ama. Fuair Brian Ó Murchú agus PJ Mac Láimh poinnte an duine. An scéal mór ná gur tháinig Stiofán Ó Conchúir ar bord ón dtaobh líne agus ghnóthaigh sé cheithre phoinnte. Bhí Stiofán ag teacht chuige fein ó ghortú a bhain do tamall ó shoin. Ard fhear. Ghníomh go Leith. Dé Domhnaigh seo caite bhuaidh an Ghaeltacht ar Ghníomh go Leith 1-14 le 2-8. Chríochnaíodar cothram nuair a fuair Dara Sé poinnte. Sea bhí an méid sin déanta, ach san am beise ghnóthaigh an laoch Brian Ó Beaglaoi an- bháide. Bhí an lá leo, fág fé Bhriain é. Comhgháirdeas libh a bhuachaillí na páirte. Bhí slua mór i láthair agus siad a bhí sásta. Bás. Tagann an bás moch agus déanach agus síneann ar lár óg agus aosta. Sin mar bhí an babtha seo. Fuair Eibhlín Mhic Ghearailt Nic Eoin ó Bhaile na nGall agus an Bóthar Buí mar a raibh sí pósta, bás an tseachtain seo caite. Méala mór a bás dá céile Jeací, a dtriúr mac Mícheál, Cathal agus Eoin, deirféaracha Peigí, Áine, Brenda, Máire Caitríona agus Nóirín, a deartháireacha Tomás B, Maidhcí Seosaimh, Dereic, Seán Pól, a gaolta agus a cáirde. Ní mhaireann a deartháir Caoimhín. Bean an dea-mheoin na fáilte, na flaithiúlachta agus an dea fhocal. Bean ba dheise snó agus gur bhinn a glór, bean gur dheacair teacht tháirste.
