us, we automatically assume that more is better? Not this time! The best way to enjoy bay leaves is a few, regularly rather than a whole bunch of them just once. Bay leaves are indigestible and have a tough fibrous stem and sharp, pointy leaves – they should never be consumed whole. Injury to the mouth, oesophagus and intestinal linings have been known to happen. However, do not let that put you off adding whole bay leaves to slow-cooking dishes and remove before serving. The flavour imparted by the leaves in cooking comes from its aromatic oils and beneficial nutrients. Similarly, you can make tea from whole leaves by simmering 4 or 5 leaves per cup of water for 10 minutes, leave to rest, covered with a lid for a little while – strain the liquid before drinking. You could also add whole cloves and cinnamon stick to the simmering tea for even more potency especially now as we enter the season of coughs, colds and flu. Sweeten with honey and serve with plenty slices of lemon or oranges for some Vitamin C! Bay leaves are perfect for Autumn and Winter cooking, as the slower cooking allows all the flavour to impart into the dish. Of course, there are other herbs that pack a greater punch, but bay adds a layer of subtle background flavour that allows the other ingredients to shine, a bit like what freshly ground pepper does to a dish. Dried leaves store well in a cool place or if you have more than you need right now, you can freeze them and they’ll last for years.

Bay Leaf it or Bay Leaf it Not!

Some of the more “out there” uses for bay leaves came from Witchipedia, a fabulous online resource for all things magic! As the darker evenings draw near, conjuring up some magic at home might become the new going out! One way of manifesting some good fortune is to write your wish on a bay leaf and burn it under the full moon. Bay leaf is handy too if you want to hold on to your lover – simply go to a bay tree and pick a leaf together, tear it in half and each keep one half. Guaranteed that you will see your lover again, and neither of you will be tempted by infidelity. So, there you have it, plenty good reasons to stock up on the bay leaves, for whatever purpose suits you best!

We are familiar seeing a wreath of bay leaves (laurels) donned by the victorious in many modern sports harping back to a time when wearing a laurel wreath was prestigious and well-respected. The term “laureate” is attributed to those who have achieved high esteem or award for their work – Nobel prize winners and poet laureates are good examples of how the simple bay leaf has earned high regard throughout the ages right up to today. In traditional (folk) medicine it has been widely used to treat migraines, earache, rheumatism, sprains, earaches, and to enhance perspiration (not quite sure what this really means!). It also was used for digestive issues, stomach ache, colic, vomiting, diarrhoea and indigestion. There are also reports that bay leaf tea relieved coughs, colds, influenza, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. Poultices of bay applied to the skin were used to treat pain and neuralgia. Resting on one’s “laurels” probably was a well spent past-time by all accounts.

Today, many of the old remedies, have been examined for efficacy, safety and toxicology among other parameters that deem them a “medicine” by modern standards. Remarkably, bay leaf has a chemistry profile that would knock the socks off some of our most advanced drugs. Bay leaf has many biologic activities such as wound healing activity, antioxidant activity, antibacterial activity, antiviral activity, immunostimulant activity, anticholinergic activity (cholesterol-lowering), antifungal activity, insect repellent activity, anticonvulsant activity, antimutagenic activity, and analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. Now, before you go out and buy a tonne of bay leaves, much more work has to be done by our scientists but so far, there is plenty good reason to include bay leaves in your kitchen herb and spice collection.

Have you ever noticed that once we are told that something is good for

The woody shrub, Laurus Nobilis, bay laurel tree or bay leaf tree, originated in the Mediterranean region but soon was cultivated in South Asia, South America, Australia and Europe. It thrives in hot, sunny climates with moisture from the sea but is often seen in Irish gardens too. It is most famed for its flavour, medicinal and ceremonial use as well as for hair lotions and “special” potions for the men. The leaves, bark and essential oils extracted from the leaves give us the familiar bay leaf aroma and it is these parts of the bay tree that have undergone the most scrutiny in scientific terms although the tree also bears flowers and fruits -these don’t feature quite as much.

The ancient Greeks were stone mad for them, the Romans wore them on their heads, Emperor Tiberius wore a hat made from them (to protect him from lightening), poets stuck them under their pillows for inspiration and witches and wizards lauded them for their narcotic effect which spelled a special kind of magic! Looking through the historical data, this ordinary herb extraordinarily sorted the ills and woes of populations all over the World! Bay Leaf has had many claims attributed to it down through the ages – some of which are valid, others not so much – but all make for some welcome distraction from the cost of living, rising energy prices and missing out on Garth Brooks!

The Safety Statement or Risk Assessment is one of the most important documents you must have on your farm.

Every machine on the farm needs to be maintained and kept in good working order. Maintenance extends the life of a machine, reduces the chance of a breakdown and ensures that the machinery is safe to use. When breakdowns happen, the first instinct is to get the machine working again so the task at hand can be finished, particularly if you’re under pressure due to things like the

Payments were recently issued under the Horticultural Exceptional Payment Scheme (HEPS) and will continue to issue through the month of September as applications are processed. HEPS is a support measure worth €2.8 million which is funded from Ireland’s allocation for exceptional adjustment aid to producers in agricultural sectors which have been impacted by Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine as announced by the European Commission on 23 March. Farmers who have outstanding queries are urged to respond to the department immediately in order to facilitate their HEPSpayment.isdesigned to ensure the short-term security and thus the long-term viability of these sectors. The subsectors included under this Scheme include commercial growers in the glasshouse high-wire crops (peppers/tomatoes/ cucumbers), field vegetable, mushroom and apple sectors. Payments will be capped at €100,000 per beneficial owner. Payments to growers of field vegetables and apples will be made on an area basis (per hectare) at a rate of €400 per hectare. Payments to growers of highwire crops will be calculated for a maximum of 2 hectares. A rate of €70,000 will be paid for the first hectare in production and €30,000 for the second or the pro-rata equivalent.

ENSURING GOOD AUTUMN GRASS GROWTH

• Clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) – always wear PPE appropriate to the work being undertaken, such as eye protection when using an angle grinder or ear protection when using loud tools. These relatively inexpensive items help protect you from injury. Do not wear loose clothing which could get caught in tools or equipment;

Here are some simple tips to help make your workshop safer:

grass and white clover groups up to mid August. Average liveweight for lambs drafted to date was 43.8kg, with average carcass weight 19.7kg. This represents an average kill-out percentage of 45%. While grass growth rates have been good, averaging 75kg DM/ha/day for July and August, grass dry matter content has reduced greatly in the last few weeks, which is impacting on lamb performance. Rainfall levels in Athenry for July were over 200% of normal levels at 174mm. To date, 85% of the total nitrogen (N) allowance for both the high (145kg N/ha) and low (90kg N/ha) N treatments has been spread. The final round of N was applied in late August to ensure adequate grass growth for the autumn. To date, the grass-only treatments have grown on average 8.0 tonnes DM/ha, the grass and white clover area at the high N rate has grown 8.45 tonnes DM/ha, and the grass and white clover area at the low N rate has grown 7.65 tonnes DM/ha. All treatments have met their silage requirements for the winter.

Monitor ewe condition during the coming weeks. In September, aim for a target ewe condition of 3.5 at joining. Identify and draft thinner ewes onto better grazing, e.g., join up with finishing female lambs for the coming weeks. Those that fail to improve condition prior to joining should be considered for culling. This is also a good time to do a final health check on the breeding flock prior to joining. Re-checking udders and mouths, as well as culling repeat lame ewes will help reduce the workload for the coming season. Ensure all health treatments are completed in the coming weeks. Rams on the farm need to be monitored over the coming weeks. There is always a risk of a ram becoming infertile. Any infection that causes an elevation in the ram’s body temperature to 104°F (40°C) will likely result in infertility for a period of six to seven weeks. Regular inspection of rams and prompt intervention is a must to reduce the risk of this occurring. As rams will lose up to 15% of their bodyweight during mating, it is essential they are in good condition prior to joining. In certain cases, additional supplementation may be needed to achieve this. With purchased ram lambs, allow them time to acclimatise to the change in management system.

Farming News

As farmers, we know all too well that things break, and depending on the day we might have to do anything from plumbing a drinker, fixing a calving light or changing the head on a grape/sprong or whatever needs to be fixed. Every farm has a “workshop/fixing/repair” shed and is an essential part of the farm. This may be a dedicated shed, or one used for other purposes also. It is important, in these areas to keep everything tidy, to prevent accidents, trips, etc. Farmers are urged to take time to consider the task they have ahead of them and how they can complete it safely.

NEW INDIVIDUAL STOCKING RATES NOW AVAILABLE ON AGFOOD.IE

The following livestock unit coefficients will be used from 2023:

• A clean workshop can help reduce the risk of trips or falls and also reduces the risk of fire. The risk of fire is also lessoned if waste materials are not allowed build up in the workshop. Any spillages should be cleaned as soon as possible

New requirement for farm Stocking Rates are now available on agfood.ie. Under the CAP Strategic Plan, farmers’ stocking rate will be used to determine eligibility for the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) scheme, the Eco-scheme Agricultural Practise on Extensive Livestock Production and the Organic Farming Scheme.

Farmers may satisfy the ‘Active Farmer’ check by meeting the minimum stocking rate of 0.10 livestock units per hectare (equivalent to at least 1 ewe per hectare). The “active farmer check” is to ensure the person receiving the scheme payments, is the person farming the land being claimed. Farmers who do not satisfy the ‘Active Farmer’ check based on the minimum stocking

Farmers may also use their stocking rate to satisfy the ‘Active Farmer’ check. On agfood.ie farmers can now see their 2021 and 2022 (to date) stocking rate. It is important to note that farmers’ stocking rates in 2022 will be used as the basis for the relevant CAP schemes in 2023. To provide maximum flexibility to farmers, the department will also allow farmers to alternatively use 2023 stocking rates. However, using 2023 stocking rates may result in scheme payments not issuing until March of the subsequent year, for example, March 2024 for scheme year 2023.

SHEEP NOTES - GETTING READY FOR BREEDING

Livestock information used to determine a farmers stocking rate is derived from a number of sources such as the department’s Animal Identification and Movement (AIM) System, Sheep Census return information and stocking information derived from sources such as flock registers or equine passports.

Michael Swords, 58, lived in Martramane, Castlegregory, with his wife Mary, 46, and their four children. Michael was a ‘Railway Watchman’.

Michael Murphy, 44, lived in John Street, Dingle with his wife Johanna, 38 – no children recorded on the census form. Michael stated his occupation as ‘Engine Driver’. Note: we have to be careful here because we don’t know for certain that he was a train driver. Creameries also had ‘Engine Drivers’ in those times – people who operated an engine that separated the cream from the milk.

From the 1901 Census in West Kerry

Apart from those who worked on the trains – the drivers and guards –many people worked on the line and recorded their employment with the railway with various descriptions on the census form. These included; ‘Railway Servant’, ‘Railway Labourer’, ‘Railway Navvy’, ‘Permanent way man’, and ‘Railway Ganger’.

John Driscoll, 58 and a widower, lived in Scrallaghbeg, Kilgobban (sic) and his occupation was ‘Railway Gatekeeper’. The line opened for business on April 1, 1891 and the first commercial train left Tralee for Dingle with passengers and four wagons loaded with fish boxes.

The work was much more than constructing the rail line. It involved building bridges, the Lispole viaduct, the stations in Dingle and Tralee and the platforms at the numerous stopping places along the route.

Ted beforeCreedonconstruction

The one tantalising glimpse of work on the line during construction can be found in Joseph O’Connor’s book Hostage to Fortune. In 1890 his

father, Daniel, had been appointed Station Master in Dingle. Joseph, then aged thirteen, travelled by Bianconi coach from Tralee with his mother and Theysiblings.arrived

Farmers and fishermen could now deliver their produce to markets in bulk. The public could travel in both directions to visit relatives, shop or attend various events. Students from remote areas of the peninsula could further their education beyond primary level in Dingle or Tralee. The new transport service brought great changes to life in West Kerry.

West Kerry Live 15

John Kelliher, 48, lived in Caher, Castlegregory area, with his wife Bridget, 46, and their five daughters and two sons. John’s stated occupation was ‘Permanent Way Man’.

at Garry na Dur where the track was being laid. ‘We had reached the open gap in the railway line. The gangs we saw were closing it up at high pressure, shouldering new rails to their appointed places’.

John Courtney, 26, and his brother Michael, 21, lived in Ballynacourty and both were single. They gave their occupations as ‘Railway Navvy’. The origin of the term ‘Navvy’ is said to be derived from the workers who built canals and who were called ‘Navigators’.

Robert Casey, 28 and single, was the ‘Station Master’ in Ardamore (Lispole). His father was James Casey, 60, and he was a farmer, shopkeeper and Postmaster in the village. A trawl of 300 newspapers failed to net a single account of actual work on the line.

More in the next issue.

Michael Johnson, 40, lived in Ballinvownig with his wife Mary and their seven children. His occupation was ‘Railway Servant’. According to a report in The Kerry Sentinel of July 1888, ‘A vast amount of employment will be opened up for labourers along the route’.

Thomas MacDonnell, 38, lived on Main Street in the home of his brotherin-law John J. O’Connor, 24. Thomas was the ‘Station Master’ in Dingle. During the construction phase of the 31-mile track (50km), including the six-mile (10km) branch line from Camp to Castlegregory the workers were paid two shillings per day, according to Jack McKenna’s book Dingle. In 1890 a pound of tea (454g) cost two shillings; a suit of clothes for a man cost £2 and a bicycle cost £8.

Patrick Spillane, 43, lived in Farranacarraige, Annascaul, with his wife Mary, 42, and their four daughters and four sons. Patrick was a ‘Railway Ganger’. The ganger was the foreman or team leader who supervised maintenance work on a designated section of the rail track.

Bhí an grúpa tar éis Máistirphlean Fuinnimh a choimisiúnú chun féachaint ar a gcleachtais fuinnimh reatha agus, ón anailís seo, chun slite le bheith níos éifeachtaí ó thaobh fuinnimh a aithint.

WKDFSEC moving forward

16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Tá áthas orainn a fhógairt go mbeidh an ceardlann: Scéal Faoi Leith: Buntreoir do Fhealsúnacht le Kevin J. Power ag tosnú arís ar 7ú Deireadh Fómhair. Beidh an cúrsa ar siúl gach Aoine 7-9i.n. ar feadh ocht seachtaine.

The next step on the farmers’ roadmap is holding over individual surveys of farms to understand each dairy farm’s unique aspects and quantify their actual energy use to decide which climate action activities are best suited to becoming more energy efficient. Further funding has been secured by WKDFSEC from SEAI and Kerry Agribusiness to begin this work as soon as possible.

Dingle Hub’s Mission

● D’fhéadfadh córais athghabhála teasa i bparlúis bhainne níos mó ná leath a bhaint de chostas reatha fuinnimh maidir le huisce a théamh, rud a bheadh ina chúis le sábháil airgid de bhreis agus €800 sa bhliain.

● Is é díosal talmhaíochta an saghas fuinnimh is mó a úsáidtear (52%), le costas de timpeall €750,000. (dá ndéanfaí bithmheatán a mhalartú ar dhíosal, bheadh deis suntasach margaidh ann).

Kevin is currently teaching “A Mind For Our Times: The Living Legacy of John Moriarty” and “The Philosophy of Interdependence” for UCC Adult Continuing Education. Kevin has a PhD from UCC and you can find out more about him on his site www.innerchapter.com. The course costs €150 and to book your space contact Kevin directly at innerchaptermusic@gmail.com.

[An EMP is an essential first step of any Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) to baseline their usage.] At a general meeting held in Dingle, the group heard these key findings and recommendations:

Scéal Faoi Leith: Buntreoir do Fhealsúnacht

• Retrofitting of farm dwelling houses to B2 could reduce energy usage by 1,400 MWh and 360 tonnes of CO2

Due to popular demand, Dingle Hub is once again hosting Kevin J. Power’s Philosophy workshop. This run of 8 weeks will be from 7th October to 25th November, Friday evenings 7-9pm.

“This group of more than a hundred dairy farmers in Corca Dhuibhne is beyond eager to take the next steps for their farms and for the environment. We have achieved a lot already with this Energy Master Plan - it shows us where we are and how we can move to take climate action. I have seen on my own farm that many of these activities are low-hanging fruit but they make a strong impact on energy efficiency and farm finances.”

• Heat Recovery systems used in a dairy parlour could lead to more than halving the energy required for heating water, leading to potential savings of over €800 per annum.

to Philosophy

[Is céim thosaigh riachtanach é MPF d’aon Phobal Fuinnimh Inmharthana (PFI) chun a úsáid fuinnimh tosaigh a ríomh.] Ag cruinniú ginearálta a tionóladh sa Daingean, chuala an grúpa na príomh-thorthaí agus moltaí seo a leanas:

Fuair Kevin a Chéim Dochtúra san Fhealsúnacht ó Choláiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh. I láthair na huaire tá sé ag obair ar chlár oideachais leanúnaigh do dhaoine fásta de chuid COC ar Fhealsúnacht an Idirspleáchais.

If you are curious about the history of philosophy, want to sharpen your critical thinking skills, and to apply these learnings to your areas of interest, this course is for you! If you need to know more first, Kevin will hold an information session on Zoom from 7pm on Friday 23rd September.

● D’fhéadfadh iarfheistiú ar thithe cónaithe feirme go B2 laghdú de 1,400 Mwh a chur ar úsáid leictreachais agus laghdú de 360 tonnaa chur ar ghiniúint CO2.

L-R Annascaul farmers Seán McCarthy, Patrick Moriarty and John Flahive with Patrick Farrell of Dun Síon

• In 2019, this farming community used energy of over 10,000 MWh (generating 2,900 tonnes of CO2) and costing circa €1 million.

● Déanfaidh teicneolaíocht ar nós painéil gréine laghdú ar chostas fuinnimh sa chás is go mbíonn an méadar roinnte idir an parlús bainne agus an tigh cónaithe.

Members of West Kerry Dairy Farmers Sustainable Energy Community (WKDFSEC) came together in Dingle at the end of August to hear how their use of energy has been analysed and to see what steps they can take to become more energy efficient. The group had commissioned an Energy Master Plan (EMP) to calculate their existing energy practices and from this analysis, identify ways to become more energy efficient.

What's Happening in Dingle Hub?

Chair of the WKDFSEC is Dinny Galvin who formed the group and has inspired farmers near and far to take his lead. He said:

Dingle Hub's mission is to build a creative, liveable, sustainable, low carbon community and generate well-paid, year-round incomes on Dingle Peninsula.

• Agricultural diesel is the single biggest energy consumer (52%) and costing circa €750,000. (If biomethane could be substituted for diesel, there is a substantial market opportunity.)

He applauded Kerry Agribusiness and SEAI for their commitment to supporting the dairy farmers of Corca Dhuibhne.

Tell it to the Trees is an interactive, immersive experience. We invite people to sit, share their stories, have their own conversations with the tree and surrounding nature in order to feel connected. What story is the tree telling us? What stories are we telling the tree? – with spoken word, movement and ritual.

Is suiteán idirghníomhach é ‘Abair leis na gcrainn é’. Tugaimid cuireadh do dhaoine teacht agus a comhráite féin a bheith acu leis an gcrann agus leis an nádúr timpeall air. Cén scéalta atá á insint ag an gcrann dúinn? Cén scéalta atá á insint againn don chrann?

Special thanks also to the coaches Tim, Ger, Katherine and Catherine and all the parents who helped out during the year.

paid to retiring coach Tommy O Connor who was a huge part of the Camp Soccer community for the past 6 years. Many thanks to Catherine, Mike Keane, Cliff, Victor, Ger and everyone who helped with the organization and the food and refreshments on the day.

Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill, celebrant at the Mass recalled the sad loss of his mother, who passed away when Dan was only 2 years of age, leaving a gap in Dans life which could never be filled.

An abiding memory in Camp, is of Dan is in his young days, trotting his fine black stallion colt up and down Camp Cross as the people came out from Mass on a Sunday. Those were the days of the horse and trap outside the church and the working horse on every farm was the tractor of today. There was great excitement as all the men eyed the animal up and down.

We all have great memories of Dan, generous to a fault, always there to help friends and neighbours in times of need. Sarah O'Brien speaking after Mass talked of Dan's great way with children, they all loved him and animals, he was indeed a great horseman. He enjoyed Travelling around to fairs and meeting up with friends, he was great company and great fun.

Many a deal was done that day and many a mare was in foal the following year.

CHARITY WALK The Betty McGrath Charity Walk held in Camp on Saturday 10th September was a great success and very well supported. Well done to all the organisers. Proceeds of over €21,000 went to the Kerry Hospice Assoc.

CASTLEGREGORY GOLF & FISHING CLUB Our Noreen Moore team played the final in Tralee against Killarney and finally for the first time ever in the club's history our ladies brought home the trophy. The team of Marion Bourke, Mary Ciepierski, Linda Flynn, Mary Moriarty and Margaret O'Callaghan with Patricia Goodwin (sub) and Manager, did us proud yesterday.

Thanks to caddies Mary Sills, Tina Moriarty, Marie McCarthy, Helen Harty and Anne Woods for keeping all players in the zone.

Our ladies played superb golf and everyone was so delighted that the trophy was coming home to Castle at last. It was not only a win for the ladies who played yesterday but for all our players throughout the years who have come so close and just couldn't manage the final hurdle.

And there is Music on Camp Fair night by An Ríocht at The Junction Bar.

Michael Keegan-Dolan is the artistic mind behind the Irish dance company Teac Damsa and the creator of MÁM. He brought together twelve international dancers from Teac Damsa, the virtuoso concertina player Cormac Begley from Corca Dhuibhne, the European classical contemporary musical collective stargaze, and his young daughter Ellie to create a piece that’s inspired by his family’s move to West Kerry in 2008.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a

There is something so satisfying when you cook chicken slowly and especially when it is with spices. The aromas around your kitchen will make everyone hungry, but don’t be tempted to try to speed it up. Slow it down and the chicken pieces will be so tender. A tagine should have plenty of flavour and freshness to it, this one will not disappoint.

15-20 dates, chopped in half

Serve with some cous-cous and mint yogurt.

20-30 green olives, pitted, chopped and rinsed

Enjoy cooking this as much as everyone will enjoy savouring every last bit. Ingredients

Tel: Michael 087-2531483 Thomas 087 9844751

1 tsp. fennel seeds, toasted and crushed

1 tin of chopped tomatoes

Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Heat a pan or pot over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil and then the chicken pieces. Brown them all over. Remove from the pot. Skim off a little of the fat and turn the heat down a little. Add a little butter and add the onion. Cook this for about five minutes, add the garlic and cook for a further 3 minutes or so. Add the spices and mix into the onion and garlic. Return the chicken to the pot. Add in the stock and tomatoes, let this cook for about 5 minutes. It will start to thicken a little, at this stage add the chicken pieces, olives and dates. Simmer this slowly for about an hour or so.

SENIORS: Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup - Group 1 (round 1) result: Cromane 0-7, MilltownCastlemaine 4-12

QUOTE: The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy, you will have.

To their credit, the GGC team - looking to add the club championship to their county league and central region titles - battled away but had goals on their mind too early and coughed up a series of good scoring opportunities. In the end, the Emmets emerged clear winners by four.

CONFIRMATION in St. Michaels on 18th September at 11am. Every Blessing to Daniel Poff and Conor West and their families for the future.

This is your personal invitation together with any son or daughter who was either Baptised or Confirmed in St. Michael’s Church, Killorglin since it opened 25 years ago. On the 18th September at 3.00pm our new and really interesting Bishop Michael would like to invite you to return to celebrate the Church where your young people Celebrated the beginning of their Spiritual Bishoplives.

Our seniors were comprehensively defeated by Milltown-Castlemaine on Sunday morning in the first round of this year’s Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup. Next up is a second group game against

GGC UNDER-13s: Central Region Division 3 semifinal: GGC 4-9, Castlegregory 3-13

38 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Team: Sean Teahan; Liam Joy, Conor Sugrue, Shane Ahern; Cian Lyons, Eanna Healy, Aidan O'Sullivan; Ethan Griffin, Danny Healy; Danny Shea, Mikey Houlihan, Sean O'Sullivan; Padhraic McMahon, Finbar Casey, Niall Murphy. Sub: Niall Dennehy.

Their first goal came within three minutes of the start and their second goal was just as crucial midway through the second half at a time when GGC had got within a kick of a ball.

Indeed, GGC were always playing catchup and never led during the hour. After 15 minutes they were within one, 1-3 to 0-5, playing against a stiff breeze and with with three minutes left until half time they were still down one 0-7 to 1-5. Then there was a real swing when GGC missed a great goal chance only for Emmets to go down the field and kick a point followed by two more in first half injury time to stretch their lead to four at the break, 0-7 to 1-8.

CROMANE SEA FEST: 16th to 18th Sept. Iveragh Coast Guard will be giving demonstrations. The GGC minors exited the inaugural county minor club championship in Glenbeigh on Saturday after a game where goal chances told the Onestory.side, the victors from Listowel, took theirs while GGC left a handful after them. It was a tight battle all through but the Emmets had more of a spark in their forward play that left them worthy four-point winners.

The GGC under-13s were edged out by one point in their Central Region semi-final in Glenbeigh on Sunday evening.

Again, GGC made inroads at the start of the second but again the Listowel lads responded and when their struck for their second goal halfway through they were well positioned ahead by 0-10 to 2-11.

The family of Eileen Collins would like to thank the many people whose words and acts of kindness around the time of her death, 27 September 2021, we remember with much gratitude.

Our gratitude to the staff of the ambulance who attended Eileen in her illness – Michael Walsh and Gavin Feirtéar. Our gratitude to the medical and nursing staff of University Hospital Kerry who cared for Eileen in her short, final hours. Despite restrictions at the hospital due to Covid, they were compassionate, understanding and accommodating to us as a family at that sad time, in particular Margaret Callaghan.

We thank our extended families in Killarney and Cork, in particular Eileen’s sister, Mary Cronin, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews who were a significant support to us at the time of Eileen’s passing.

Her husband, Tim and family, Mícheál, Aodh and Máire would like to thank the doctors who cared for Eileen during her lifetime and at the hour of her sudden illness and untimely death – Fiona Kavanagh and Conor Brosnan – go raibh maith agaibh beirt.

We acknowledge the role of Fr. Michael Moynihan and Dónal O’Connor in the funeral preparations and also the Dingle Gardaí for their assistance. Go raibh céad maith ag Éilís Kennedy agus ag Fergus Ó Flaithbheartaigh as na hamhráin agus as an gceol álainn ag an aifreann éagnairce.

To those who delivered food, cards, flowers and who visited Kinard during Eileen’s wake, ár mbuíochas croí libh go léir.

Ba mhaith linn go dtabharfaí aitheantas anseo do gach éinne a chabhraigh linn inár mbris is inár mbrón, trí ghníomh nó trí bhriathar. Faid ar bhur saol agus laethanta gealais chugaibh. Go raibh ceolta na bhflaitheas ag ár máthair, Eileen.

Eileen Collins lived a great life, full of laughter, conversation, family and friends. She welcomed people to her home where there was an open door for visitors to her Bed & Breakfast and for her wide circle of friends. We remember here all Eileen’s colleagues in the hospitality business, her card playing crew, her friends in Probus and Eileen’s wonderful neighbours in Dingle and in Kinard.

We greatly appreciate the many gestures of thoughtfulness and kindness to our father, Tim over the past year. We, Eileen’s family and grandchildren miss her every day.

‘THE YEAR IS 1975. A young Irish-American is on a mission to enlist in an elite unit of the US Marine Corps. His goal: to receive the most intensive military training possible and then go to Ireland to join the IRA and fight to end the British occupation of the Six Counties of Northern Ireland.

1Moċ(4)

Crawley is blisteringly candid about the people he worked with and unflinching in his commentary on the IRA leadership. Through it all comes the steadfast voice of a man on a mission, providing an evocative and passionate account of where that mission led him and why. To this day, he remains committed to the establishment of an all-Ireland Republic.’

In this powerful and brutally honest memoir of his extraordinary experiences, John Crawley details the gruelling challenges of his Marine Corps training, and how, not long after his discharge, he joined the IRA. Soon he found himself in Boston, working with notorious American mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger to amass a shipment of weapons. When captured on the Marita Ann gun-running trawler off the Kerry coast, Crawley was imprisoned for ten years, and upon his release he became one of the masterminds behind the IRA’s plan to throw London’s electrical system into disarray.

Fuair Putin scanradh nuair a maraíodh iníon do dhlúth chara dhó. Bhíodar ag cruinniú agus nár thóg an cailín gluaisteán a hathar agus maraíodh í. Is é an t-athair a bhí le marú. Sé mhí ar a laghad agus níos cosúla os cionn seacht mhí a thógfaidh an t-aistear. Ní raibh ach 10 lá de sin caite agus mé á scríobh seo, ach ag an bpoinnte sin bhí Pat i measc an ceathrar tosaigh, as an 16 a chuaigh san iomaíocht. Go dtaga sé slán go ceann cúrsa agus abhaile ina dhiaidh dtína mhuintir agus a chairde, a bhí go líonmhar i Sables d’Olonne na Fraince chun tús an rás a fheiscint agus bualadh bos speisialta a thabhairt do Pat.

Tá pleanáil diúltaithe do iarratas 288 tigh a thógaint i gCill Airne. Dúradh go marófai scata Ceann Cait nó Ulchabháin mar chuirfeadh an solas ós na dtithe nua scaipeadh ar na Cinn Cait mar go mbeadh na tithe nua ag teacht treasna ar bhealach na n-éan seo a bheadh ar a slí dtí a láthracha.
