Forget Black Friday - Black Foods are the Best Deal Around! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

carrots or butternut squash for a super fancy colourful plate Black Rice: In ancient China, it is said that black rice was considered so unique and nutritious that it was forbidden for all but royalty. Someone, somewhere made a show and now we all can enjoy this nutritious grain no matter of our social standing! The pigment, again, comes from anthocyanins but it also contains over twenty other types of antioxidants and has the highest antioxidant activity of all rice varieties. It is one of the few grains known to contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two major players protecting our eyes from Age Related Macular Disease. Black Cumin Seeds: Botanically known as Nigella Sativa, this seed is revered in many cultures all over the world. So far, numerous studies demonstrated its main active constituent, thymoquinone, to be medicinally very effective against various illnesses including different neurological and mental illness, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, diabetes, inflammatory conditions, and infertility as well as infectious diseases due to bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral infections. Now, who wouldn’t want a bit of that with the dinner! Black Pepper: This one is so common, it hardly gets a mention, but it is worth knowing that black pepper is a great digestif, helping the digestive system absorb and assimilate all kinds of nutrients in our food. Piperine, the active ingredient stimulates appetite, relieves gas, can help clear congestion and proven to be a natural antidepressant! Nice one, pepper!

Originally, Black Friday referred to a financial crash back in 1869, more recently it is synonymous with a huge surge in retail sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Although, Thanksgiving is not such a big deal here in Ireland, the trend of spending big on the days that follow has certainly caught on. Most of the hype is baseless and unless you are prepared to camp outside your target shop for a specific item, there really isn’t much to it all. Do not be too disappointed, you probably didn’t need a 70-inch TV anyway but there is still unbelievable value in switching your Black Friday Deals to Black Friday Meals! Walking around the shops this month, keep your eyes peeled for some black foods to add to your cooking – not only are they good value, but they also pack a mighty punch when it comes to your nutrition and health! The notion that we should be eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day falls short of the amount of plant foods needed for optimum health. The Japanese believe that we need at least seven to ten plant foods from at least five colour categories every day. There are thousands of studies that back this theory up, and diversity of plant food is as important, if not more, than the quantity of plant foods we eat. Recently, studies indicate that thirty different plant foods per week is what is required to maintain a robust microbiome, which is central to both our physical health and mental wellbeing. While eating your greens remains an important component of your daily menu, eating a wider variety of colours can help you keep your diet varied and diverse. Interestingly, black and very dark foods are ideal Winter fodder as the pigment responsible for their colour nourish the brain, nervous system, kidneys and bones – the organs most associated with the Winter season. The black pigment found in many plant foods comes from a deep blue/purple colour. This category of foods are rich in polyphenols, anthocyanidins, resveratrol – all of which are powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and anti-cancer nutrients. Receptors for these plant chemicals are concentrated along nerve cells and pathways suggesting that black foods support cognitive health, nerve health and mood. Black beans, for example, have twice as much calcium and folate than their white counterparts – two vital nutrients for our nerves! Here are some more black beauties to add to your plate: Black Sesame Seeds: Small yet mighty these seeds contain a wealth of nutrients particularly good for stress and anxiety. Just two tablespoons of these little seeds provides 15% of both calcium and magnesium, two minerals that work in tandem for the constriction and relaxation of nerve pathways and blood vessels. Try them sprinkled over cooked vegetables or in salads, easy peasy! Black Lentils: Often called Black Beluga Lentils, getting their name from the famous caviar but the flavor is full-bodied and earthy like a black bean. They take approximately 25 minutes to cook and are the most nutritious variety of lentils. One half cup of uncooked black lentils provides 26g protein, 18g fiber, 100mg calcium, 8mg iron, and 960mg potassium, as well as the anthocyanins noted for anti-cancer activity. Pair them with 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Black Mushrooms: Not talking about white mushrooms gone black in the back of the fridge but Shiitake mushrooms prized for their rich, savoury flavour described as umami. Black mushrooms are high in protein, vitamin B2, which maintain the body's energy, and B12, which keeps cells and nerves healthy. Shiitakes contain beta glucans support immune health and good for lowering cholesterol. These mushrooms include all nine essential amino acids, crucial to our immunity and building muscle. They are one of the few plant foods to contain Vitamin D, as their skin can absorb UV light (a bit like ourselves) and convert to Vitamin D2. Our body can convert D2 to the more favourable form of vitamin D3. Traditionally, they have been used in medicine to treat parasites, heart problems and exhaustion. These are delicious added to soups and risotto for a real mushroomy taste! Black Olives: A true hero for circulatory health, black olives are rich in Vitamin E, iron and healthy monounsaturated fats. These too, get their colour from anthocyanin, making them the perfect tonic for the heart and mind! We still have blackberries, black garlic, black squid ink, black sea spaghetti, black grapes and black plums but no more space here to write about them! For those who are not bothered about the big spend for Black Friday, you can always splash out on caviar and black truffles washed down with a nice cup of black tea! Farming News

But to the farming community, fear not. As a member of the Advisory community, please all be aware that everyone will get in. Everyone.

Louis Murchan

€1.3 BILLION ANNOUNCED FOR NEW FORESTRY SUPPORTS

ACRES UPDATE The president of the Irish Natura and Hill Farmers’ Association (INHFA) has said that the workload facing agricultural advisors to meet the AgriClimate Rural Environmental Scheme (ACRES) deadline is “blatantly unfair”. Applications for the €1.5 billion scheme can only be submitted on behalf of farmers by an approved agricultural advisor before the closing date of midnight on November 21. Budget 2023 provided funding for 30,000 farmers to enter the first tranche of the results-based agri-environmental scheme. However, INHFA president Vincent Roddy told Agriland that he is not confident there will be enough time to complete that number of applications. He reckons that if 20,000 applicants are successful, that will be the maximum, based on the timeline allowed by DAFM. And this begs the question, is there a reason why the timeline is so short. The INHFA president previously called for the application deadline to be extended until next February. He said this would allow farmers time to discuss the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) with their advisors. With the deadline looming, farmers who are sitting on the fence and deciding whether to join or not should decide very quickly if they want to join, or the decision will be made for them. There is a view-point among some, that they will leave it to the last minute to decide and let their advisor know. That will not happen this time, as advisors are busy doing their draft plans, and will commence taking their “agrisnap” or GPS photos of selected plots belonging to farmers in General ACRES areas. These “shots” will have to be taken on all Low Input Grassland, Low Input Peatland Grassland, Wild Bird Food and Extensive Grazing plots belonging to these applicants. Considering that these are the big money options for most General ACRES applicants, most will have one or a number of these plots to be recorded. So, don’t put yourself at risk of not getting a plan submitted. Contact your advisor now. ACRES FUNDING The Public Accounts Committee has raised questions over how ACRES will be funded. ACRES will take the place of the Green, Low-Carbon, Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS) as the main agri-environment scheme in Pillar II of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from 2023. When it was initially envisaged during negotiations for the Programme for Government (in which it was referred to as a ‘flagship environment scheme’), the programme said it would be funded by some of the government’s receipts from the Carbon Tax (collectively referred to as the Climate Action Fund). This fund – expected to amount to €1.5 billion by 2030 – is due to be allocated to different government departments for various purposes, including to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for the purpose of funding ACRES. This wouldn’t instil confidence in anyone. This allocation would form part of the overall funding for ACRES over the course of the next CAP to 2027, it is understood. However, the PAC has raised questions into whether this funding is part of the state’s co-financing of Pillar II, or if it is a separate allocation of funds outside of CAP funding. In a new report into the department’s expenditure, the PAC said that it had been told by the department that the Programme for Government commits to a €1.5 billion agri-environmental fund…the money for which will come from carbon taxes. The committee has queried whether funds are in addition to the CAP, or are part of the state’s co-financing of Pillar II. FODDER SUPPORT SCHEME 2023 Unbelievably, in the midst of the chaos and carnage that is ACRES application time, the DAFM have launched a Fodder Support or Silage Scheme, with a deadline of 5th December 2022. This is for a scheme in Summer 2023, where many farmers are still not sure where or how much silage they will want to or need to cut. Why on earth anyone would do such a thing, when farmers, advisors and everyone else involved are pleading for more time for ACRES. The online application system for this Scheme is now open, Farmers wishing to apply for the Fodder Support Scheme can do so either themselves or through their advisor up to midnight on the 5th December 2022 by logging on to the Exceptional Aid System on agfood.ie. All applications, whether submitted by a farmer or advisor, must be made using the online system.

This sounds good, but let us hope that it is operated on a more professional basis than some of the other schemes thrown out to farmers in the recent past. Knowing the forestry people, they won't be so quick to have a dud offered in their name. They operate with pride. Premiums for planting trees to be increased by between 46% and 66% and extended to 20 years for farmers and the funding will be delivered through a new Forestry Programme. This is a proposed investment of €1.3 billion in Irish forestry for the next national Forestry Programme and represents the largest such investment ever in tree-planting. It must now go for state -aid approval by the European Commission. The new Programme is built around the principle of right trees in the right places for the right reasons with the right management. It aims to deliver more diverse forest which will meet multiple societal objectives, economic, social and environmental. Higher grant rates for forest establishment are also proposed with increases of approximately 20% to reflect rising living costs. The new one hectare native tree area scheme will also make it easier for landowners who wish to plant small areas of trees on their farm. The new Programme will be 100% Exchequer funded and is subject to State Aid approval from the EU Commission. The department is in contact with the Commission in relation to this approval which is a rigorous process. The proposed Forestry Programme 2023 – 2027 contains a series of 8 different interventions: 1) Forest Creation 2) Agroforestry 3) Infrastructure and Technology investments 4) Sustainable Forest Management 5) Developing skills and empowering the Forest Sector for Sustainable Forest Management 6) Open Forests: Social, Cultural and Heritage Forests 7) Climate Resilient Reforestation 8) Reconstitution DRIBBLE BARS TO BE INCLUDED IN LATEST TAMS II FUNDING The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has confirmed that dribble bars will be included in the latest tranche of Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) funding with the deadline for applications set at December 16. Dribble bars are currently available in the Low Emission Slurry Spreading [LESS], Organic Capital Investment Scheme [OCIS] and Young Farmers Capital Investment Scheme [YFCIS] measures under TAMS II and the closing date for applications to the final tranche is December 16. In relation to TAMS III, changes to the support for capital investments including any new investments are subject to a Rural Development Plan [RDP] amendment and commission approval. Once the RDP amendment is approved, grant rates, investment lists and terms and conditions relating to schemes can be finalised and published. The TAMS III budget has been increased to €90 million for 2023. This increase will help to fund the proposed large-scale investment in on-farm renewables for farmers and will assist in funding the proposed increase to 60% grant rate and a standalone investment ceiling of €90,000 for solar installation. As an immediate step, farm dwellings are now eligible for inclusion for solar panel investments.

From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon

Mitchell Patrick Mitchell, 50, and his wife Margaret, 44, lived in Ferriters Quarter, Dunquin, with their ten children – eight sons and two daughters ranging in age from three months to twenty one years. They were a farming family. Begley James Begley, 45, and his wife Johanna, 35, lived in Ballynabuck, Kilquane parish, with their ten children – five daughters and five sons who were aged from one year to fifteen years. This was a farming family and there were fifteen people in the household. Griffin

In the last issue we looked at large families in West Kerry as recorded in the 1901 Census which was taken on 31 March. We’ll continue with that theme in this issue ending with the largest family in the area. It’s quite possible that some families were larger than recorded. Some older family members may have left home prior to the Census. Eaton John Eaton, 44, and his wife Mary, 38, lived in Martramane, Castlegregory, with their eleven children – six daughters and five sons. But there was a marked difference between this large family and all the others. The Eatons had three sets of twins – Michael and Thomas were both 9; Patrick and Alice were 5 and Catherine and Ann were 4. John Eaton was a ‘Bootmaker’. Begley Michael Begley, 58, and his wife Mary, 42, lived in Ballyguin, near Brandon with their ten children – six sons and four daughters ranging in age from one to twenty-three. Michael and his sons John, 23, and Thomas, 21, were ‘Fishermen’. Sullivan John Sullivan, 46, and his wife Bridget, 40, lived in Glanminard with their ten children – six daughters and four sons aged between three months and seventeen years. The Sullivans were a farming family and bi-lingual. Kavanagh Maurice Kavanagh, 59, and his wife Bridget, 46, lived in Cantra with their ten children – seven sons and three daughters aged between three years and twenty five years. We met this family in an earlier issue because two of the sons, Patrick, 25, and Maurice, 18, recorded their occupations as ‘Mineral Water Manufacturer’. Their brother John, 23, was the ‘Parish Clerk’ and their father was a ‘Tailor’. Hannifin Thomas Hannifin, 50, and his wife Bridget, 37, lived in Lisdargan with their ten children – five daughters and five sons aged between one month and sixteen years. John Thomas Hannifin, 80, was head of this farm family. Malone Michael Malone, 40, and his wife Bridget, 42, lived in Emlagh East (Marhin) with their ten children – five daughters and five sons aged from one year to eighteen years. Shea Thomas Shea, 48, and his wife Kate, 43, lived in Murreagh with their eleven children – seven daughters and four sons aged from four months to twenty-one years. Thomas was a farmer while his sons Patrick, 21, and Michael, 18, were ‘Fishermen’. Leahy Maurice Leahy, 48, and his wife Mary, 44, lived in Ballycurrane near Brandon Creek with their twelve children – seven daughters and five sons who were aged between one year and twenty one years. Maurice and his son Thomas, 17, were ‘Fishermen’. Long Patrick Long, 43, and his wife Bridget, 32, lived in Kilcolman, Ventry, with their ten children – six sons and four daughters who ranged in age from one year to fifteen years. They were a farming family.

James Griffin, 55, and his wife Mary, 48, lived in Castlegregory with their ten children – five daughters and five sons who were aged from seven years to twenty four years. There were twin girls, Norah and Hanna, aged nine years in this farming family. Johnson Richard Johnson, 46, and his wife Mary, 44, lived in Murreagh with their seven sons and three daughters who ranged in age from four years to twenty two years. Richard was a ‘Farmer/Fisherman’. His son John, 22, was a fisherman and his son Patrick, 18, was a ‘Rural Postman’. McKenna Michael McKenna, 44, and his wife Mary, 41, lived in Cloosmore, Dingle, with their twelve children – seven sons and five daughters who were aged between one year and eighteen years. Michael was an ‘Agricultural Labourer’. Sheehy Now we come to the largest family in West Kerry on Census night 1901. James Sheehy, 55, and his wife Mary, 45, lived in Glin South with their fourteen children – eight sons and six daughters who were aged from one year to twenty six years. This was a farming family. Note: This is the final item from the 1901 Census. Not to worry – we’ll begin with items from the 1911 Census on November 24.

Dingle Bay Rovers Official Opening

Martin O'Neill and family at the official opening of Páirc Mháirtín Uí Néill. From left: David, Martin, Stephen, Anna and Mary Dingle Bay Rovers officially opened their club grounds in Gallarus last Saturday. The grounds were named Páirc Mháirtín Uí Neill after the club's founder. Martin O'Neill, along with James Barrett, founded the club 27 years ago and has shown tireless dedication to bringing Dingle Bay Rovers to where it is today. The club has come a long way since it started out in 1995 with just one team (senior men's), moving around between various grounds and sometimes struggling to keep going. Now the Rovers boast 17 teams, a ground of their own and a brand new all weather astro turf pitch. Congratulations to all involved.

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan

Dingle Benners Hotel were welcome hosts of the recent Original Irish Hotels Autumn meeting. Pictured are Original Irish Hotel team members Eimear Felle Marketing Exec, Dawn Byrne Group Revenue Manager, Alison Deegan Senior Business Development Manager with John Foley and Breda Mallon, Dingle Benners Hotel.

There is a November tradition of writing out a list of our loved ones who have died and bringing the list to the Church where they will be prayed for. As the lists were completed this year there were no doubt people on it that we did not expect. People who died young, people who died suddenly were included for the first time. The one thing that we can all be sure of is death. As we grow older we realise that death is not just something that happens in the life of other people but a personal appointment that we must all keep. The death of a close friend or family member can stir up feelings of loss, grief and maybe anger. It can lead us to ask Why am I here? And What is the purpose of my life? The month of November is a fitting time to dwell on this aspect of our faith. Growth has stopped. The days are damp, the trees are bare, the weather is cooler and the nights are long. Nature seems to be preaching its own silent sermon about the end of things. It is a time that Christians remember those gone before them – those who have died recently and those who have died in the distant past. They may have passed from our sight but the bonds of friendship between them and us remain. Their influence is still felt in our midst. The words of Jesus in the Gospel are reassuring as they remind us that death is not the end, for we believe in a God, not of the dead but of the living. The prayerful holding of people in mind, in heart and in prayer has always been at the centre of the life of the Church. On Friday November 11th at 6.15pm in St Mary's Church, Dingle family and friends of those who died from the parish in the past year are invited to Mass where those near and dear to them who have gone before us to eternal life will be remembered by name. All are welcome. These days world leaders are gathered for COP27 to discuss climate change and what can be done to reduce the cause and impact especially in the poorest parts of the world. We hope that their discussions bear fruit and that each of us will live in such a way as not to damage the world around us. Our parish programme for preparation for First Confession and First Communion continues. Parents and guardian are encouraged to help their child on their journey of faith. This can be done through helping create a sense of wonder at the great things that God has done in their lives and giving thanks in prayer to God. At the end of November some people involved in Radio Maria will be speaking at Masses to tell us about their work. Recently I heard about a group called Mary's Meals who feed children as they attend school in the poorest countries in the world. A donation of €18.30 is all it costs to feed a child for a whole school year. You can find out more on marysmeals.ie In recent months we have installed two Tap and Donate devices in St Mary’s Church, Dingle for those who wish to contribute to the work of the parish in this way. Each time a credit/debit card is tapped €5 is donated to the parish. Many thanks to all those who support the work of the parish and its priests.

Every day we hear of the increase in the cost of living and its impact on an increasing number of people in our community, our country and throughout the world. Those who are in a position to support their work are encouraged to do so. God bless Fr Michael

Scríbhneoireacht Chruthaitheach ag daltaí Bhliain 1, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne Is í Dairena Ní Chinnéide, Scríbhneoir Cónaitheach a stiúraigh an obair seo do Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne. Tá an Scéim á maoiniú ag Ealaín na Gaeltachta Anseo thíos tá scríbhneoireacht nua ósna daltaí a tháinig as ceardlanna seachtainiúla leis an Scríbhneoir Cónaitheach. Samplaí den imeartas focal a bhí ar siúl acu nuair a chaitheadar dán nó scéal a dhéanamh ag baint úsáide as 5 fhocal a roghnaíodar féin:

Feirmeoireacht; Beithígh; Báideoir; Tráigh; Rith Dé Luain bhí mo Dhaid ag feirmeoireacht agus rith na beithígh ar fad síos ar an dtráigh. Thóg sé tamall chun iad a thabhairt thar n-ais agus ghlaoigh sé ar mo chlann chun cabhrú leis. Bhí mo dheartháir ar nós báideoir, mar ná ligfeadh sé aon bheithígh thairis. Ach fuaireamar iad sa deireadh. - Ríona Ní Bheaglaoich Fadó, fadó bhí feirmeoir ag feirmeoireacht in aice na trá. Agus é ag siúl tharais, bhí leanaí ag imirt caide, ach ní raibh aon bháideoir acu. Chuireadar ceist ar an bhfeoirmeoir an mbeadh sé ina bhádóir. Dúirt sé go mbeadh. Chuaigh an cluiche ar aghaidh ar feadh tamaill agus an feirmeoir ag sábháil. Ach ansan fuair sé glaoch ar an bhfón go mbris na beithígh amach as an ngort. Rith sé agus rith sé agus rith sé go dtí gur shroich sé an gort agus bhí na beithígh ar fad imithe agus ní bhfuaireadh riamh aríst iad. - Seán Ó Cearna Chuas féin ag rith ar an dtráigh. Lá deas grianmhar a bhí ann. Is mé ag rith go dtí an tráigh, chonac clann ag feirmeoireacht. Beirt leanbh ag rith timpeall agus fear agus bean ag bailiú na mbeithíoch. Bhí ana-am ag na leanaí ag titim ar fuaid na háite. D'aimsíos an tráigh fé dheireadh agus bhuaileas lem chairde ann. Bhíomar ag snámh timpeall na háite agus ag léimt anuas don gcé ar feadh tamaill. Ina dhiaidh san, fuaireamar glaoch agus chuamar sall go Gallarus. Bhí cluiche caide againn agus bhíos-sa mar bháideoir. Bhíomar ag imirt go dtí gur imigh an ghrian faoi. Bhí ana-lá againn. - Rubi Ní Chinnéid Bhí feirmeoir ann fadó, fadó, darbh ainm Pádraig. Lá amháin agus é ag feirmeoireacht, thosnaigh ceann desna beithígh ag caint. Ansan labhair muc. Bhí ionadh ar Phádraig. Dúirt an mhuc gur bhreá leis cluiche caide a imirt. Fuair an mhuc a chairde. Bhí bó, caoirigh, lachain agus madra ann. Thosnaíodar ag imirt. Bhí Pádraig ag féachaint orthu, a shúile oscailte. Dúirt an mhuc leis a bheith mar bháideoir. Dhein sé de réir mar a dúirt an mhuc. Bhíodar ag imirt is ag rith. Bhí am ana-dheas acu. Bhí an lá go hálainn. Mar sin dúirt caoire go mba cheart dóibh dul go dtí an tráigh. Chuadar ann is bhíodar ag snámh an lá ar fad. Bhí am iontach acu leis. Chuadar abhaile tuirseach, traochta. - Muireann Ní Mhuircheartaigh

Caid; Rugbaí; Sióga; Smaoineamh; Feirm Is maith le gach duine de ghnáth, caid, rugbaí nó obair ar an bhfeirm. Ach, ní maith liomsa na rudaí sin. Is maith liomsa sióga. Lola is ainm dom agus bhíos ana-thógtha leis na sióga ón uair a bhí mé níos lú ná ceithre mbliana d'aois. De ghnáth, bím ag smaoineamh ar na dánta agus ar na hamhráin a bhíonn acu. Nuair a bhí mé óg, gach aon seans a bhí agam, chuireas ceist ar mo Dhaid mé a thiomáint chuig ceann des na ciorcail sióga. Tá a fhios agam nach mór gach rud faoi shióga. Anois táim chun ceann a fheiscint. Bhí mé ullamh, bhí mo binoculars agam im phóca agus mo leabhar faoi shióga Ceilteacha agam im mhála. Bhí mo bhosca ceoil agam leis mar is maith leis na sióga ceol. Ach níorbh é sin an smaoineamh ab fhearr mar bhí sé ana- throm ar fad. Tar éis tamaill bhí mé timpeall ar lár na coille. Ghlaos ar mo mhadra agus shuíomar sa chrann. Bhuel, bhí mise sa chrann agus bhí an madra ag bun an chrainn. Is b'ait é. Ná dein breithiúnas orm! Is breá leis na sióga madraí agus mar sin scanraíonn an madra na cait. Tar éis timpeall uair a chloig chonaic mé rud beag ag eitilt i dtreo mo mhadra. Thóg mé amach mo binoculars agus......ba shióg a bhí ann! Bhí mé chomh sásta liom féin gur thiteas amach as an gcrann agus scannraíos an tsióg. Táim chun an milleán a chur ar an madra. - Ash Nic Gabhann Ní raibh fhios ag na sióga cad a dhéanfaidís don lá. Smaoinigh siad ar chluiche a imirt. D'imir siad caid ar an bhféirm. D'imir siad rugbaí ar an bhfeirm. Bhain siad ana-thaitneamh as an lá. Ag deireadh an lae bhíodar tuirseach traochta. - Fia Calandra Lá amháin thainig síoga chuig an bhfeirm. Bhíodar thuas ar shíleáil an bhotháin ag imirt caide nuair a bhuail smaoineamh isteach ina gceann. "Nach mbeadh rugbaí níos fearr le himirt?" a dúradar agus d'imríodar rugbaí den chuid eile don lá. Shiúil mé mo mhadra agus mo dhineasár agus chonaic mé trucail uachtar reoite. Cheannaigh mé uachtar reoite agus chuaigh mé go dtí an bpáirc.

Grow West

D'ith mé m'uachtar reoite. Bhí mo mhadra ag tafann mar bhí maide ar an dtalamh. Chaith mé an maide chuig mo mhadra. Bhí mo dhineasár tuirseach agus thit sé ina chodladh. Tar éis 30 noiméad, dhúigish sé agus dhein sé béic mhór. Shiúil mé go dtí mo theach agus thainig mé ar chat dubh. Bheartaigh mé ar an gcat a choimeád, mar bhí sé cute. An chéad lá eile chuaigh mé ar scoil le mo dhineasár agus d'ith sé an scoil. Bhí íontas orm mar cheap mé nár ith sé ach feoil!

What's Happening in Dingle Hub? As you probably know already Dingle’s festival calendar is teeming with events over the coming weekends: 11/11/’22 An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh 11/11/’22 New Dingle International Film Festival 18/11/’22 Féile Liteartha Chorca Dhuibhne (The Dingle Literary Festival)

a small organic holding, specialising in cattle, sheep and honey production. His recently completed postgraduate diploma in Organic Farming has given him further insight into managing soils and the nutrient cycle. A former restaurant manager, Tommy is keenly aware of the other side of the coin - the challenges and intricacies the hospitality sector face in sourcing local food, rather than opting for a corporate supply chain. He is now developing a further string to his bow with plans for an agritourism experience on his land, to help tell these stories to the thousands that come to this beautiful part of Dingle Peninsula.

Beidh Lá Oscailte (cosúil le maidin caife) i gteic@ Chorca Dhuibhne i bhfoirgneamh Údarás na Gaeltachta i mBaile an Mhuileann sa Daingean, Eircode V92 TX48. Is imeacht dhátheangach í seo dírithe orthu siúd atá ag obair ón mbaile ar leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne nó dóibh siúd go mbeadh suim acu obair ón mbaile sa todhchaí. Deis iontach a bheidh ann chun áiseanna iontacha gteic a fheiscint agus conas go bhféadfaimís tacú leat ar d’aistear, chomh maith le deis líonrú pobail a dhéanamh leo siúd atá sa bhád céanna leat. If you always wanted to see inside this impressive building next to Milltown Bridge now is your chance! Within this Údarás na Gaeltachta building is the gteic workspace which Dingle Hub manages on behalf of Údarás na Gaeltachta. As you can see it’s a top-class facility and a great place to get some work done.

02/12/’22 Ireland's Edge - The Good Life / Slí Bheatha agus 02/12/’22 Other Voices Tickets for the various events can be found through their respective websites. If you are interested in doing something different and volunteering your time or experience to these festivals, you can make contact with the relevant organisations or as an alternative through Dingle Hub. Write a short email to news@dinglehub.com and we will try to assist. Know someone coming to the area for events like these? Be sure to tell them before they travel to check out Dingle Hub and consider booking a desk with us. If they can work from here for a few days using our lightning fast internet they can extend their time around Corca Dhuibhne - everyone’s a winner! Le Teacht: Save the Date! 02/12/’22 Dingle Hub personnel to speak at Ireland’s Edge What future is in the fields? - A panel discussion with farmers Dinny Galvin and Tommy Reidy and artist Lisa Fingleton. This panel will explore the real experience of dealing with climate change from an Irish farmers perspective. They will talk about the challenges facing farmers and also the solutions they would like to see in relation to climate action.

Coffee Morning crew lapping up the information 28/10/’22 Maidin Caife Bhí sár maidin againn sa Hub agus ag bualadh le daoine nua a tháining isteach chun cursaí caife agus obair a phlé. Stephen from Two Turtle Doves, local coffee roaster in Dingle gave tips on perfecting your coffee at home. We found out the advantages of an Aeropress and a good gooseneck kettle - you had to be there! Those seeing Dingle Hub for the first time were impressed with the atmosphere and facilities available in the workspace. Connections were made, desks were booked, meeting rooms too!

There are gteics digital hubs in all Gaeltachts and they make-up part of the larger Connected Hubs network that has around 400 hubs nationwide. The gteic network is celebrating Digital First Day on November 15th, a way of highlighting the improvements digital growth brings to areas like Corca Dhuibhne.

Here’s a bit more about Tommy and what he will bring to the discussion

Our video conferencing section with Grow Remote (the organisation who promote working remotely to stem rural depopulation) had a shocking revelation for us! 80,000 jobs are available to remote job seekers at the moment, something the Kerryman newspaper picked up on last week. This portrait of Tommy entitled ‘Our Fence of Mountains’ was created by artist James Hayes after a visit to the farmland to hear Tommy explain how he looks after his patch of the Kingdom. More on James Hayes via www. theliminalpage.com Anyone with familiarity of living in Corca Dhuibhne knows that due to the seasonal vagaries of agriculture and tourism, many locals rely on having more than one income stream. Tommy Reidy from Castlegregory is one who wears a few different hats. He is an organic farmer and also makes time to balance the books for Dingle Hub. For the best part of a decade Tommy has been farming 28 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Tríona Butler As well as getting to see the facilities in the gteic digital hub, you will meet and hear how others are working remotely including Tríona Butler. She has been working from her home in Muiríoch while leading one of the world's top Artificial Intelligence research UX teams! Refreshments will be laid on. To find out more and to register your attendance, keep an eye on our website and social media. Le teacht: 08/12/’22 Save the Date! Deireadh le Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe Is tionscadal é ‘Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe – A Creative Imagining’ go bhfuil sé mar chuspóir aige bheith ag obair le feirmeoirí áitiúla, chun féachaint go cruthaitheach ar shlite gur féidir le feirmeoirí ar an leithinis éagsúlú a dhéanamh mar bhealach chun dul i ngleic leis an athrú aeráide. As the Creative Climate Action project comes to a close after a fruitful year we hope that you can join us on this

date (times and venue to be confirmed) to find out how the year went for our ten farm families.

Dingle Hub’s Mission An misean atá againn ná pobal cruthaitheach inmharthana, ísealcharbóin a chruthú agus ioncaim maithe i rith na bliana ar fad a ghiniúint anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne. Dingle Hub's mission is to build a creative, liveable, sustainable, low carbon community and generate well-paid, year-round incomes on Dingle Peninsula. To see how we are getting there, keep up with us on our social media (Twitter, Instagram etc.) and website (www.dinglehub.com) Coiméad súil ar na meáin agus féach ar ár suíomh.

in aid of West Kerry Community Hospital Benner's Hotel Sunday November 20th @ 7pm Great prizes to be won on the night. Artist Liam O'Neill, centre, presenting a cheque for €1,622 to Father Jim Sheehy at Liam's gallery in Dingle recently. Also at the presentation were, from left, Eddie Hutchison, Julie O'Neill and Micheál Ó Conchúir. The donation will be used to promote the work of the Dingle Men's Shed at Ballintaggart, according to Father Sheehy. A second cheque, for an identical amount, was presented to Gairdín Mhuire in Green Street and will be used to fund the development of the centre's arts and crafts programmes. Both organisations expressed their sincere gratitude for the generous donations. The money was raised by Liam's well established but covid-interrupted annual raffle of one of his much sought-after works of art during this year's revived Dingle Food Festival. The lucky holder of the winning raffle ticket was Muiris Ferris who is now the proud owner of Liam's oil painting of Cuas valued at €6,500. Liam's first cousin, Eddie Hutchison, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday is currently building a naomhóg at the Men's Shed. The construction is well attended by the public on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. When completed the naomhóg will remain at the Men's Shed.

Bígí ann!

The North Wind & the Sun (An Aesop’s Fable) The North Wind and the Sun had a quarrel about which of them was the stronger. While they were disputing with much heat and bluster, a Man passed along the road wrapped in a cloak.

With the first gust of wind the ends of the cloak whipped about the Man's body. But he immediately wrapped it closely around him, and the harder the Wind blew, the tighter he held it to him. The North Wind tore angrily at the cloak, but all his efforts were in vain.

Then the Sun began to shine. At first his beams were gentle, and in the pleasant warmth after the bitter cold of the North Wind, the Man unfastened his cloak and let it hang loosely from his shoulders. The Sun's rays grew warmer and warmer. The Man took off his cap and mopped his brow. At last he became so heated that he pulled off his cloak, and, to escape the blazing sunshine, threw himself down in the welcome shade of a tree by the roadside.

Bhí Oireachtas na Samhna ar siúl i mBaile Átha Cliath amháin (nach mór!) go dtí 1973. Anois is ag na Ciarraígh a bhfuil an tOireachtas a bheag ná mór agus é ar siúl i gCill Áirne aríst an bhliain seo chugainn. Oireachtas na Samhna was (mostly!) held in Dublin until 1973. Film Review - The Banshees of Inisherin Tom Ó Neachtain The Banshees of Inisherin is a black-as-black comedy from tragicomic maestro Martin McDonagh, set on an isolated island off Ireland’s west coast during the Irish Civil War. The story follows Colin Farrell’s simple but self-conscious Padraic, as his friend of many years, Brendan Gleeson’s musician Colm, decides it would be for the best for them to never speak again. This shock leaves them both carrying out acts of increasing desperation and bitterness. This brief outline of the story cannot illustrate the comedic brilliance of McDonagh’s script, which finds a perfect balance between elaborately eloquent insults and unfussed one-liners that pepper even the 42 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

film’s bleaker scenes with some great laughs. Due to the strong comedic chops of the entire cast, the characters that populate Inisherin feel larger-than-life, yet hilariously down to earth. One of the greatest tools in McDonagh’s writing arsenal is once again utilised here: his talent for imbuing purely comedic characters and plot-lines with poignant sadness as the film progresses. This affective technique is pulled off masterfully in many instances here, with seemingly insignificant interactions in the film’s lighter first-half, having grave consequences by the story’s conclusion. Much has been said about the film’s ending, with it causing contention between critics and audiences alike. McDonagh chooses to leave the central plotlines either unresolved or on an intentionally unsatisfying note, a choice that had the potential to spoil the film’s impact for many. However, considering the resentment and immaturity of the characters, a lack of resolution is arguably

the only natural way for the story to end. Carter Burwell’s score successfully subverts the musical tropes associated with the west of Ireland, with uneasy melodies creating an eerie atmosphere around Inisherin. The entirety of the cast are perfectly in tune with McDonagh’s writing, they deliver emotion, laughs and gravitas in spades. They are a wickedly talented ensemble. Farrell, however, ends up stealing the show, gifting us with a brilliant and bemusedly entertaining performance for the ages. Due to Martin McDonagh’s perfect penmanship, The Banshees of Inisherin flourishes as an easygoing comedy and a weary condemnation of self-inflicted misery, all played by a cast without a weak link. .
