The Street Theatre / Parade has become a central part of Féile na Bealtaine over the past decade and is a wonderful example of community involvement of artists, teachers, schools and other volunteers who create a colourful spectacle on the streets of Dingle to kick start the summer.

Féile na Bealtaine is now looking for people to organise and coordinate this event for 2023 and beyond. It can be recreated or reinvented in whatever way people would like to imagine it into life.

Budget-Busting Shopping Tips!

In Ireland, the average weekly spend on food for a family of four is €150 yet according to a National Consumer Agency Survey one third of what we buy is thrown in the bin either having never been used or as left-overs from meals! In money terms this amounts to €50 per week or €2600 per year! There are two ways of looking at this figure. Firstly, imagine if the new budget introduced a household charge of €2600 per year? Riots? Protests? Joe Duffy-mania? Or alternatively, how would you like to be handed €2600 every year as a reward for being more savvy with the grocery shopping, less wasteful in the kitchen while protecting your health at the same time? Here are some ideas on how small changes in the kitchen may lead to more change in your pocket!

Shopping Lists – take the time to plan meals for the week ahead and write a shopping list accordingly of the ingredients you will need. Mealplanning saves time spent shopping and wondering what to have for dinner every day. It gives you an opportunity to include seasonal produce which is usually cheaper and reduces the risk of buying food that will not be eaten during that week. Plan at least one meat-free day, as meat equates to a significant part of our weekly food bill. Meals do not need to be complicated and you can also give yourself a day off from cooking by preparing at least one dinner per week that will do two days. A big family omelette towards the end of the week will sort out any bits and pieces of vegetables left in the fridge! It is worth noting that the main culprits for food waste are bread, dairy products and lettuce. Before making a meal plan and shopping list it is worthwhile to keep a food diary for a week or two to see exactly what you are eating, as a family, and what is getting wasted – with that knowledge you will plan meals and shopping more efficiently.

Fruit and Vegetables: The most perishable foods in your shopping basket deserves careful planning to avoid waste and to optimize their nutrition value. For most adults and older children - aim to eat two or three portions of fresh fruit and ideally at least five portions of vegetables daily. One cupped hand represents a portion so figure out how much fits in your hand to work it out. When shopping, use this as a guide so you buy enough but not too much. Vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and onions can be stored in a dry, cool place and have a longer shelf life. Leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes last longer in the fridge. Do not store fruit and vegetables in the same compartment in the fridge as a natural-occuring gas called ethylene can build up and cause spoilage to nearby fresh produce. Remove plastic wrappers from fruit and veg when storing as a sweaty bag will shorten the life of your fresh goodies. Most fruit do better out of the fridge, apart from soft berries, grapes and plums. The visible presence of a large bowl of fresh fruit is more appealing and is more likely to be eaten. Fruit can be expensive but if eaten instead of processed food snacks, you will save in the long run and benefit from the extra vitamins, minerals and enzymes they contain. Soups and stews with plenty vegetables will meet ideal veg intake as well as helping to reduce waste. For fruit that needs to be used up quickly – use early in the week at breakfast or as snacks. Anything fruit not eaten can be thrown into smoothies or compotes so no waste fruit at the end of the week.

Meat, Fish and Poultry: Most butchers will have offers on certain cuts of meat, which can be used immediately or often, frozen for later use. For adults, a meat portion no bigger than the size of your palm provides your protein needs and any health benefits associated with eating meat. The regular consumption more than this amount will impact negatively both on your pocket and your health in the long-term. Make meat go further by adding plenty vegetables, lentils and beans to stews, casseroles and homemade Italian or Asian-style dishes. Processed meats such as sausages, frankfurters, deli meats, chicken nuggets and the like appear cheaper at first glance but ultimately will cost us dearly in the long-term both financially and health-wise. There is undeniable evidence that preservatives and additives used in processed meat products greatly increase the risk of bowel and stomach cancer. Plan a couple of fish dinners. Your local fishmonger will help you choose the freshest fish depending on your budget and family size as well as providing invaluable advice about storing, preparing and cooking your seafood.

Breads, Grains and Cereals: In Ireland, bread has replaced the potato as our main food staple. However, most of the bread eaten in this country is white, sliced pan. Although it's cheaper, white commercial bread offers no real nutrition and leaves us hungry and wanting more. You can save money by buying good quality wholemeal varieties of bread, cereal and other grain products as they fill you up and keep you feeling satisfied for longer. Regular home-baking can provide your family with delicious breads and sweet treats without the health problems associated with the over-dependence of chemical-laden fake food such as white bread, commercial cakes, biscuits and cereals.

Examine your shopping habits. Whether it is the national budget or a household budget - careful planning is key! Shopping wisely with health in mind will see you and your family through these tough economic times but more importantly, will put flavour, colour and great health back on the table!

€20M SHEEP IMPROVEMENT SCHEME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, has announced that farmers can now apply for the new Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS). The €20 million scheme will replace the current Sheep Welfare Scheme (SWS) in 2023 under the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Payments under the scheme will be at a rate of €12 per eligible breeding ewe, which is an increase from the €10 per eligible breeding ewe under the SWS. Applications for the scheme can be made online by the farmer or by a Farm Advisory System (FAS) approved advisor via the application facility on www.agfood.ie. The closing date for the submission of applications is midnight on Monday, December 19, 2022. The measures under the SIS are largely similar to the SWS, with the exception that both lowland and hill flock owners will have to buy genotyped rams at least once over the course of the new scheme. Everything is right, bar the timing.

GET WINTER-READY ON THE FARM

October sees the fall of leaves so, it’s time to start closing fields, preparing land and livestock for the winter. Extend the grazing season for as long as possible into the autumn. This helps to shorten the winter feeding period. Aim to prioritise the best grass available towards the most productive stock i.e., calves/weanlings, finishing lambs, beef cattle etc. Consider applying lime this backend while weather and ground conditions allow. Lime will encourage growth in the spring by releasing organic N from the soil; encourage earthworm and microbial activity, releasing soil P for plant growth etc. Graze fields/paddocks down to 4-5cm and close for winter. Start closing in the third week of October and close paddocks in sequence up to late November. Fields closed in October should be available for grazing from mid-February onwards and those closed in November should be available for grazing in March. Farmers who out-winter sheep up to January should close an area of the farm and graze these paddocks in rotation. Post-emergence sprays are essential to control docks, redshank and chickweed (at 2-3 leaf stage which is normally at about six weeks after sowing). If clover is present in the new ley, use Legumex DB, Underclear or some other appropriate herbicide. If no clover present, use Nintex etc. Check spray label carefully before use.

• Clean out animal housing thoroughly.

• Check for damaged/sagging slats.

• Ensure all gates and feeding barriers are hanging safely and can be fastened securely.

• Check water bowls/piping for leakages.

• Service tractors.

• Check brakes and hydraulic systems etc.

• List repairs needed and get them done.

• Don’t delay. Do it today.

Scan all cows 35 days after mating has finished. Scanning will verify if cow is in calf and help with the organisation of calving and labour requirements next spring. After scanning, cull all barren cows or heifers, sell them or fatten them for slaughter. Creep Grazing helps break the cow/calf link and ensures a supply of quality grass for weanlings. When it comes to feeding weanlings, calves to be weaned should be fed in open troughs in a creep grazing area, where the amount of meal being fed can be regulated and all calves can be feed and be seen at the same time. Feed at least 1kg per head/day of a 16% Crude Protein ration for four weeks pre-weaning and two weeks post-weaning. Finishing Cattle – sell cattle as they become fit. For beef cattle that are 30-40kg short of slaughter weight, feed 3 to 4kg head/ day of a high energy low protein (12-14% CP) ration at grass for six to eight weeks. Concentrate feeding will increase carcase weight, conformation score and kill out. Under finished cattle could be sold at the mart. Slaughter beef cattle before they are 30 months of age. For cattle that are more than 40kg short of slaughter weight which have been on meal at grass, these animals can be housed and finished indoors. Feeding meal ad-lib indoors will give high weight gains in the short term.

OVER €8.8 MILLION TO BE PAID TO KERRY FARMERS GLAS

Over €8.8 million is due to be paid to 2,504 farmers across Kerry. This comes Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue announces GLAS Scheme payments will commence. Approximately €113 million is to be paid to participating farmers across the country this week. The Minister claims that these payments recognise the farmer's contributions to the environmental achievements in the GLAS scheme, but doesn’t mention the intrusive or draconian inspection aspect of the scheme.

SCHEMES AND CLOSING DATES – CONFUSION REIGNS

Too many column inches have been dedicated over recent weeks to the closing dates for the myriad farming schemes recently announced by agriculture minister, Charlie McConalogue and his departmental team. It’s all very confusing. We don’t care how and when a various scheme is implemented. But, surely, it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility to have the same closing date agreed for each measure. This should be the same date on which annual applications for the single farm payment (Basic Payment Scheme) close, i.e., normally in mid-May.

We are now at a stage when all farm-related applications can be submitted online. Gone are the days when farmers and/or their advisors are slaving over reams of paper striving to make the post with a ‘chunky’ application form. Absolutely not; all of this can now be done in the comfort of one’s own kitchen at any time of the day or night with a cup of tea or coffee at hand. The fixing of a single application date will help focus farmers’ minds on the schemes that are of direct interest to them at a specific time of the year. The parallel of studying for exams is an apt one to draw upon in this context. No doubt, those that disagree with this approach will try to point out that setting a single application date for all schemes will overload the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) systems.

But, in truth, this argument does not hold up. Not every farmer milks cows, not every farmer grows crops and not every farmer keeps sheep. Besides, an application date has no bearing on when money will actually be paid out for a specific scheme.

Some are more complex than others; some require on-farm inspections and some require the applicants to purchase equipment prior to grants being paid out. All of this can take up differing periods of time, depending on a specific application. But, significantly, none of these requirements are formally linked back to an application date. Meanwhile, farmers can push ahead with the work they need to get on with. The recent agreement of Ireland’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan makes the suggestion of a common application date for all schemes all the more relevant. A structured funding mechanism has been agreed between Brussels and Dublin, where the future of Irish agriculture is concerned. So why not bring a degree of even greater certainty to bear within the farming sector by having a common application date for all relevant schemes?

A good news story from last summer was the launch by the Department of Rural and Community Development of the Outdoor Recreation Walks Scheme in the Dingle Peninsula/Corca Dhuibhne area. Good news for landowners and farmers, good news for sustainable tourism on the Dingle Peninsula, good news for the quality and maintenance of the Dingle Way and good news for local communities who can enjoy one of the best way-marked way trails in the world on their doorstep.

Under the Walks Scheme participating landholders receive a payment for the maintenance of Walking Routes that pass through their land. The payment is based on a work plan and a five-year agreement. The Outdoor Recreation Walks Scheme will be administered through the office of NEWKD by the new Rural Recreation Officer, Joanna Jankowski.

The Walks Scheme on Sli Corca Dhuibhne/The Dingle Way will be rolled out in sections. The section from Tralee to Camp has already begun. If you are a landowner on the Tralee to Camp part of the trail and you haven’t been contacted yet, please ring the Rural Recreation Officer, Joanna on 0870562231 or the Chairperson of Dingle Way Committee, John Ahern on 0876538548.

The Dingle Way is 180km in length and begins in Tralee, from where it connects to Annascaul through Camp and Inch. On then through Lispole to Dingle and then west through Ceann Trá to Dún Chaoin. North then through Baile na nGáll and An Fheothanach over the mountain south of Mas an Tíompán (the highest point on the trail) and down into Bréanainn and Clochán and then back to Tralee through Castlegregory and Camp. A long-term plan would be to connect to the Kerry Way through Keel and Castlemaine.

Recreational walking is becoming more popular for both local and visitor alike and the Dingle Way is a real jewel given the natural beauty of the Dingle Peninsula. This allows the walker an inspirational experience which is healthy for both body and mind. If you are thinking of walking the Dingle Way this winter, please be advised that good walking boots and raingear are essential.

The Dingle Way is vital infrastructure for the further development of slow immersive sustainable tourism and complements the language and rich culture and heritage for which the Dingle Peninsula is famous. The Dingle Way Outdoor Recreation Walks Scheme in the Dingle Peninsula also acts as a catalyst for enterprise and employment right throughout the peninsula and provides an opportunity for the tourism and agricultural sectors of the local economy to work closer together. Finally with the support of the Outdoor Recreation Walks Scheme it is hoped that the Dingle Way can be both well maintained and improved. The Dingle Way has the potential to be the best way-marked hiking trail in the world!

From the 1911 Census in West Kerry

Here we go again. Moving on ten years from the 1901 Census in Ireland we explore the 1911 Census in West Kerry, from Camp to the Blaskets, which was recorded on Sunday, April 2.

There was one important change to the census form. Families were asked how many children were born alive and how many were still living in 1911. The statistics in relation to some of the responses are shocking and we’ll look at them in due course.

We began the 1901 Census by recording unusual occupations – and we’ll start in a similar vein this time with occupations that were unknown or unrecorded in West Kerry in 1901.

Tea agent.

William Houlihan, 25, was a boarder in a house in Dykegate Lane and his occupation was ‘Tea agent’. The first tea agent recorded in West Kerry as far as is known. The head of the house was Peter Hand. 56, who was born in Monaghan and he was a Royal Navy pensioner. His wife Mary Agnes, 46, was born in Cork.

Insurance agent

Michael Rohan, 58, was a former sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary but is listed as an insurance agent in 1911. He lived in Gaol Street with his wife Alice, 40, and their four children. No insurance agents were recorded in West Kerry in the 1901 Census.

Pedlar

Daniel Griffin lived in Green Street and gave his occupation as ‘Pedlar’. A pedlar was also a hawker or street trader selling small items. Pedlar’s Lake is located above the Conor Pass and Pedlar’s Cross is located on the road between Clonakilty and Bandon in Cork.

Huxter

Mary Connor, 64, lived in Green Street and, similar to the previous entry, she declared herself to be a ‘Huxter’ which is the same as a pedlar or hawker but who may be a bit more pushy in their selling style.

Watchmakers

James Butler, 50, a native of Limerick city was a widower who lived in John Street and recorded his occupation as ‘Watchmaker’. His son William, 18, followed the same profession.

Poultry Instructor

Jane Quinn, 30, was a ‘Poultry Instructor, and she was a visitor to a house in Green Street on Census night. Was she a poultry instructor in the area or totally non-local? What is interesting about this entry is that the house belonged to Dr. John Miles.

He was a noted physician and surgeon who was living in the only house in Farrannakilla in 1901. His son Thomas, 27, is recorded as ‘Clerk of Petty Sessions’ – local courts. Thomas is not mentioned in the 1901 Census. Dr. Miles died on May 15, 1912 and is buried in Raheenyhooig cemetery along with Thomas.

Violinist

Roger Kennedy, 79, was a boarder in a house in John Street. He was a single man and his profession was ‘Violinist’. The main occupants of the house were John (54) and Bridget (40) Evans who had lost five of their ten children – no details.

Rail Traffic Inspector

John Murphy, 51, and his wife Bridget, 38, also lived in John Street. He was a ‘Railway Traffic Inspector’ and a native of Cork. Two of their four children were born in Galway. Was there much rail traffic to inspect in West Kerry in 1911?

Common Carrier

James Kennedy, 56, and his son John, 27, lived on Main Street and both were ‘Common Carriers’ – presumably they transported goods and people from place to place. It’s possible that common carriers and other transport services were licensed and that ‘common’ specified a particular service.

Customs Officers

Jerome Meechmor, 27, and Edmond Walsh, 26, were boarders in a hotel on Main Street. Their occupations were ‘Officers of Customs and Excise’. The original census form is poorly recorded – the writing is difficult to read and is open to interpretation. The hotel was under the ownership of Georgina Hennry, 41 (sic) and a widow.

Was it Lee’s Hotel under new ownership since the 1901 Census? A barmaid in the hotel is recorded as a ‘Car maid’.

County Councillor

Thomas Baker, 50, lived on Main Street with his wife Hanoria, 41, and their six children. His occupation was ‘Co. Councillor’. He was a noted public speaker, popular in the community and was fondly referred to as ‘Lord Baker’.

Meal and Flour Merchant

John Moynahan, 52, lived in Annascaul and he declared his occupation to be ‘Meal and Flour Merchant’. He was married to Johanna and four of their eight children were still living.

Music and dance fans set for ‘Keel Goes Country’ Reboot

Following on from the success of the ‘Keel Goes Country’ event at Keel community hall in Castlemaine back in April, Eddie Lee and the Paudie Coffey Band will be back with their unique sounds for another night of country music and dancing on Saturday 3rd December.

“After the April event we were inundated with requests to hold another music and dance night” said Keel Community Council chairman Gerard O’ Dowd. “We have been fortunate to secure Eddie and the Paudie Coffey band once again. Their busy diary is no surprise, given the reaction to their performance and the atmosphere in the hall last time round. We are also delighted to announce that the lads will be joined for a special guest performance by ‘Keels own’ Noreen Ashe.

Doors open at 8pm on Saturday the 3rd December, refreshments will be available throughout the evening, together with a prize raffle. Entrance Tickets are €10 each and are available on the door on the night. All proceeds going to further hall renovations and future Keel Community projects.

West Kerry Tractor

RunIt’s almost that time of year again to polish up the modern day workhorses of West Kerry farms and take part in MÓRCHUAIRD TARRACÓRA CHORCA DHUIBHNE/ WEST KERRY TRACTOR RUN. We are on track to roll out on Sunday 27th November from Dingle Eco Farm at 12 o clock sharp (registration begins at 11am) following the original route (through Dingle Town to Ventry and back to Dingle via Rathinane and Baile na nÁith.) and ending with a lap of Dingle town. John Liston will once again provide refreshments at the starting line and a hot dinner will be provided to participants at the end courtesy of the Kavanagh family at The Marina Inn.

The Tractor Run route for 2022. As always, only roadworthy vehicles with third party fire & theft insurance will be permitted to take part. We would kindly ask all participants to follow the instructions of stewards.

We are once again raising funds for two very worthy charities - Gairdín Mhuire and Irish Lung Fibrosis Association. The tractor run has raised over €80 000 since it began and our main

beneficiaries have used these funds to great effect.

Gairdín Mhuire (West Kerry Care of the Aged) purchased a Mercedes sprinter minibus helped by monies raised by the West Kerry Tractor Run.

It is wheelchair accessible and transports clients from all over the peninsula to the day care centre in town where they can participate in many activities and receive a three course meal. They have recently opened a brand new kitchen and are providing a meals on wheels service. We hope that funds from this year’s tractor run will be able to contribute to running costs of this delivery service.

Improvements in detection and intervention mean that there are over 1000 people now living with pulmonary fibrosis in Ireland. ILFA continues to be an incredible support to these patients, in addition to helping to educate and research this devastating illness.

The success of the tractor run so far would not have been possible if it was not for the generosity of the West Kerry community. The committee would be extremely thankful for any sponsorship or donations to support our worthy charities again this year. There will bucket collection on the day or alternatively funds can be transferred to the tractor run credit

union account. However, the event is about awareness as much as it is about fundraising so we would urge anyone who is unable to give financially to contribute by helping to raise profile of the charities and promote awareness of the important work they do. This can be done by

Kerry Female Convicts on Death Ship

The Ireland – Australia Transportation records show that a Timothy Kennedy from County Kerry was given seven years transportation to Australia in 1825 for ‘Conveying furniture against owners will’.

Convict records from 1825 show that Catherine Kennedy, wife of Timothy Kennedy, ‘resides at Annescale, Dingle’.

In February 1828 Catherine Kennedy wrote to William Lamb, Chief Secretary at Dublin Castle, seeking permission to travel to New South Wales, Australia, with her family to be with her husband, according to the National Archives. Convicts were often released long before their sentence was completed. We don’t know if Catherine Kennedy got permission to travel to Australia. What we do know is that when transported prisoners were released very few could afford the expense of returning to Ireland.

So it was not unusual for a convict’s family to undertake the perilous journey to the Australian and Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) penal colonies. Female convicts were also banished and between the years 1791 and 1853 more than 26,000 Irish convicts, both male and female, were transported.

On January 5, 1835, the convict ship Neva left Cork with 241 people on board comprising 150 female convicts, nine free women, 55 children and 27 crew under the command of Captain Benjamin Peck. The children belonged to some of the convicts and the free women.

The convicts were all taken from Elizabeth Fort in Cork which was a holding place for female criminals from around the country prior to their transportation.

What crimes had these convicts committed? In those times a convicted felon could be banished for stealing a handkerchief, vagrancy, theft of a farm animal, forgery and even for writing a threatening letter. Some of these convicts were as young as twelve years of age and were transported to Australia for seven years.

There were seven Kerry convicts on board the Neva. They were Catherine Connor, 24, sentenced to seven years for the theft of a sheet. Margaret Hasset, 21, seven years for larceny. Ellen Mullane, 35, seven years for larceny. Hanora O’Brien, 20, seven years for theft of clothing.

Catherine Reilly, 35, seven years for larceny and she was accompanied by her two children, Honora aged seven and Catherine aged six months. Mary Slattery, 22 , seven years for the theft of silver spoons valued at £10 and Ellen White, 29, seven years for larceny.

Their home places in Kerry are unknown apart from that of Mary Slattery whose father had a butcher shop in Tralee, according to an exhibition on the Neva in Elizabeth Fort, Cork, in September of this year.

The route taken by the first convict ships was incredibly circuitous. They went south to the Canary Islands, then south-west to Rio de Janeiro, then east to Cape Town, South Africa and finally arrived in Australia after more than eight months. It was all to do with favourable winds.

The passage time was much reduced by 1835. It was reported that three people died on the Neva in the course of the voyage and that a child was born on board the vessel also.

On May 13/14, after 128 days at sea, the Neva struck a reef in the middle of the night, near King Island off the coast of Van Diemen’s Land and began to sink. The prisoners were released, according to one report.

Too many people piled into a lifeboat that capsized and all were drowned, apart from Captain Peck who made his way back on board the stricken ship.

The Neva was driven by wind and wave onto another reef and broke up into several sections with mainly female convicts on deck weeping, wailing and pleading to be rescued.

Even as they were drowning and under water, in the final seconds of their lives, some mothers were seen to be holding their children above the water in the hope of rescue.

One report stated that 221 were drowned that night while another stated 224 were lost. Whatever the actual figure, it appears that 22 people survived the sinking. They clung to wreckage and drifted to King Island where seven more died from sheer exhaustion.

The 15 remaining survivors included Captain Peck, nine of his crew and six female convicts, according to reports but the numbers don’t add up. These figures amount to sixteen people unless Capt. Peck was included in the nine crewmen.

They were rescued after about a month and taken to Van Diemen’s Land. Miraculously, Mary Slattery was among them. She seems to have avoided prison and served her time as a domestic servant in a new farming settlement called Longford. She is said to have been a model servant but died in 1838, three years after the traumatic sinking, cause unknown.

The sinking of the Neva was Australia’s second worst civil maritime disaster. Their worst was the sinking of the Cataraqui, a British ship, again off King Island, with the loss of 400 people in 1845.

(Van Diemen’s Land changed its name to Tasmania in 1856 and in 1901 it became an island state of Australia).

EVENTS. The West Kerry Tractor Run is due to take place on this Sunday November 27th starting from the the old Fish Farm in Lispole at midday and travelling West before finishing at the Quay Dingle in the afternoon. All funds collected will be divided between An gairdin Mhuire day Care Centre and the Irisl Lung Transplant Association.

The 21st Annual Other Voices Festival takes place over the weekend of December 2nd to 4th. The programme includes well known and up and coming artists who should please the huge number of music followers who pack into the various venues around town over the weekend.

The Annual Feile na Soilse Lantern Parade will be back again this year starting from Bridge Street at 5p.m. The Parade will be led by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band through the streets of the town finishing with the official lighting up ceremony of the Christmas Tree. Both visitors and locals are welcome to join in and get the Christmas Spirit under way here in West Kerry.

An Diseart will host a Christmas Market starting at noon on Sunday December 11th featuring a wide variety of goods from local artists and producers.

Dingle and An Gaeltacht are due to meet in the 2022 Morans Of Dingle West Kerry Senior Championship Final with a date and venue to be decided shortly.

YACHTING. Hard luck on Pat Lawless whose heroic efforts to complete the Round The World Golden Globe Yacht Race were cut short due to a steering breakage near Cape Town last week. The competition rules do not allow any outside repairs only on board by the contestants and it would be impossible for our seaman to continue in the circumstances. However we congratulate Pat on his superb efforts which kept his many followers engrossed over the past few months since he left Dingle Pier.

SHOP LOCAL. Most households will undoubtably have an extra outlay either on general shopping or the annual round of gifts over the next few weeks. We earnestly request you to consider helping local producers and outlets and services by shopping local again this Christmas.

The benefits of your local spend helps a lot a people retain their employment, helps all existing outlets to keep the doors open and also helps reduce the carbon footprint which is so topical at present. Míle Buíochas.

TIDY TOWNS. If you have not started already it is definitely time to think of feeding the birds who get increasingly hungier over the winter months. It is preferable if food is left regularly in the same place and not in an exposed area where larger birds can steal from our smaller feathered fniends.

What's Happening in Dingle Hub?

17/11/’22 Ploutos and European Innovation Partnerships

Garrynadur was the spot for an information session directed at Corca Dhuibhne farmers involved in Dingle Hub’s EU Ploutos project (Precision Farming on Rural Farms). There were over 50 in attendance, including some friends of Dingle Hub, originally from Ukraine and based in Ballintaggart. They were interested to find out about agriculture in West Kerry and the significant differences between it and how farms and community works here.

Great craic was had at Digital First Day in the gteic workspace.

Lots of connections were made between people doing their remote jobs on Dingle Peninsula. Did you know that there are people working for the likes of Google, Hubspot and NetScout in the neighbourhood? These and plenty more…

Great synergies between the group that assembled with one theme emerging: women in tech. And also the career progression challenges that face many of them. Some clever advices on this were shared and more will follow!

The highlight of the evening was looking towards future areas of work and possibly harnessing the European Innovation Partnerships (EIP) scheme like our colleagues in Mid-Kerry. The MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP Project aims to improve the sustainability and support the economic viability of farming in that area. We had an inspiring talk from Cork dairy farmer Donal Sheehan who is also Project Manager with the BRIDE Project which is all about farming with nature and enhancing and restoring habitats in farmlands. This innovative agri-environment project is based in the River Bride catchment of north-east County Cork and west Waterford.

B iodiversity R egeneration I n a D airying Environment Project has been taking some really interesting approaches to the land with great benefits apparent already in nature.

MaREI’s transdisciplinary research group at the University College Cork is harnessing the community spirit on the Dingle Peninsula to advance a groundbreaking engaged research initiative called Dingle Peninsula 2030. This initiative is co-producing solutions with the community to address critical energy and climate challenges while also building societal resilience and capacity. MaREI has established a diverse multi-disciplinary research team combining expertise from energy engineering (Prof. Brian Ó Gallachóir, Dr Connor McGookin), sociology (Dr Clare Watson, Dr Evan Boyle), and community engagement (MaREI Public Engagement Manager, Aoife Deane), who work in a deeply embedded way with the community partners in the Dingle Peninsula 2030 team.

Dingle Hub is full of interesting character at the best of times but over the last fortnight this was complemented by being full of colourful characters! Between the Film Fest crew using our spaces and DinlgeLit workshops galore in our meeting rooms the place was buzzing. Plenty of Dingle Hub staff and our regular Hub clients get involved and give their time over to these festivals too - Comhghairdeas do gach éinne a bhí pháirteach. Thanks to the great response from those of you who have offered to volunteer time and experience to the upcoming Other Voices festival.

Some crew members involved with Other Voices and Ireland's Edge festivals will also be using our facilities. The extremely fast internet speed is a huge draw and we find again and again that those involved in high-end imagery like camera and video work can gain huge productivity when

Engaging across three very different domains of a cycling-friendly public-realm, energy efficiency in the Irish agricultural sector and Irish employment rights for refugees, panellists share their stories of bringing forth novel proposals and solutions. Embodying the change they sought to bring into being, they outline why and how they felt impelled to enter the public policy sphere, what it feels like to be an volunteer-innovator there and how the contribution of initiatives like theirs can be considered and incorporated in solving problems and delivering on opportunity at local, regional and national levels.

What Future Is In The Fields? - With Dingle Hub Personnel

In conversation with broadcaster and journalist Ella McSweeney, local Farmers Dinny Galvin and Tommy Reidy with artist Lisa Fingleton will explore the real experience of dealing with climate change from an Irish farmers perspective. They will talk about the challenges facing farmers and also the solutions they would like to see in relation to climate action.

Dinny Galvin has become a somewhat unlikely hero of Ireland’s energy efficiency scene. Dairy farming since a teenager he always had a fascination with electricity and finally got to explore this interest through engaging with Dingle Hub’s various sustainability projects in recent years. His quick mind applied what he learnt to his own holding and he has taken huge strides forward in his use of energy in the dairy and family home.

Not content with this, he saw the huge potential of other farmers taking similar actions and has brought together circa 100 dairy farms in Corca Dhuibhne (Dingle Peninsula) into Ireland’s first sectoral Sustainable Energy Community through SEAI. This SEC is currently charging ahead with evaluations of their farms, essential before they begin to take action.

Dinny entertains and educates a near constant rotation of thought-leaders, politicians and other devotees at his holding in Lispole, just outside Dingle. As well as this he is a sought-after commentator to the media and is frequently invited to inspire people at events up and down the country. Earlier this year he joined the Dingle Hub team in the role of Energy and Agriculture Liaison Officer. His impact on those wanting to follow in his footsteps is so strong that his colleague’s nickname ‘D’influencer’ is beginning to stick!

After a year of manning the controls on Dingle Hub communications and social media channels, we bid farewell to Aodán Ó Conaill whose contract with us ends early December. He’s been an integral member of the team and really brought our communications (including this West Kerry Live column) to a new level. We hope to continue seeing him in Dingle Hub and around Corca Dhuibhne - we look forward to seeing what he does after this. But first he will return to the Other Voices team where he will be overseeing volunteers into roles around the festival.

Recently acknowledged star performer, our U12 midfielder Campman, Eoghan O'Driscoll who not only gave a brilliant display in the Kerry Schoolboys League recently to help his team gain all 3 points away to Iveragh Utd, but also represented his county in the Inter League against West Cork where Eoghan also excelled to get Kerry a great result. Well done. Congratulations Eoghan, you are doing Camp and the county proud!

D’imigh Seán ó Muircheartaigh ar Shlí na Fírinne sa bhaile i Sliabh Glas, Bréanainn, Trá Lí, Co Chiarraí go suaimhneach ar an Luan, 7ú lá de mhí na Samhna.

Fear céile ionúin agus dlúth chara Dheirdre, deartháir dílis do Tom, Mike, Joan agus Máire, uncail grámhar dá nianna agus neachtanna, cara

maith dá dheirfiúr agus deartháireacha céile, dá ghaolta, dá chomharsana agus dá chairde go léir. Táimid ar fad croíbhriste in am ár mbris, mothóimid uainn go deo é.

The news of the death of John Moriarty, retired principal school teacher at Aughacasla National school was received with great sadness by all his past pupils and the entire community. John will always be remembered as an excellent teacher, caring and kind and interested in all of his students.

On retirement John took up the role of Chairman of Aughacasla School Board of Management continuing in a very supportive role up to the present time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

The news of the unexpected death of Kayla (KJ) Chambers, Camp on 10th November occasioned deep sadness and shock in the community.

Kayla was taken from her family suddenly and unexpectedly following a seemingly innocuous illness.

Kayla known to her friends as KJ passed away peacefully at home despite paramedics bests efforts to keep her with us.

Kayla will be deeply missed by her heartbroken parents Mary and Declan, her siblings Zara and Ethan as well as by her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

KJ had a wonderful group of friends who we are sure will feel her loss most profoundly but, we hope they can find fond memories to sustain them at this trying time.

Kayla's father Declan received a standing ovation from a packed congregation at St. Marys Church Camp at her funeral Mass, when he delivered a heartfelt and touching tribute to his beautiful daughter Kayla, KJ.

Declan reached out to the community and the young people and his own family sharing memories of Kayla KJ, which will

live forever in the lives of those who knew and loved her.

Following requiem mass concelebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill and Rev. Mairt Hanley, Kayla KJ was laid to rest in Camp Cemetary.

May her gentle soul rest in peace. Ní imithe uainn ach imithe romhaim.

Briana Learnihan of Illauncaum, Castlegregory and originally from Detroit, Michigan, USA passed away peacefully on 4th November.

A lovely lady, Briana touched the hearts of many attending the local community activities. She will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends..

Sympathy is extended to her daughters Deanna Slattery and Brigid Halloran, her sons-in-law Travis Slattery and Emilian Halloran and her pride and joy grandson Jack, her many friends, and all her family in Kerry, Donegal and the United States, who will honor and remember her kind spirit and generous soul fondly.

Hunter’s Pork Chops, Mushroom Gravy

1 tbsp. wholegrain mustard

250g mushroom, brushed and sliced salt and pepper

Method

Take a sheet of parchment paper and fold it in half. Place a pork chop inside and use something like a rolling pin or a pan (if you are fancy use a meat mallet) to flatten the pork chop. Flatten it until it is about ¼ of an inch.

Put out three bowls, add the flour to the first, eggs to the second and breadcrumbs to the third. Add salt and pepper to the flour. Bread the pork by dipping it in flour and shaking off the excess, then place it in the egg. Use the other hand to take it from the egg and add it to the breadcrumb. Make sure it is covered well with breadcrumbs.

A proper rustic winter midweek meal.

I love this, pork chops coated in breadcrumbs and cooked to a golden colour, pair this with mushrooms finished in stock, cream and mustard, it is easy to make and so delicious.

Usually if you find any word relating to hunting in a dish, mushrooms will feature in it. Traditionally hunting season across the continent has always been associated with late Autumn and Winter, perfect time in woodlands to look for mushrooms.

Serves 4

Ingredients

4 boneless pork chops

150g flour 2 eggs, whisked 150g breadcrumbs oil butter

200ml beef stock sprig of thyme 100ml cream

Huge thanks to Ms Edel O'Connor and the Transition Years of Meán Scoil Nua an LeithTriúigh, Castlegregory who co-ordinated the collection in the area. Well done everyone!

Heat the pan to medium, once hot add a little oil and butter. Place the pork in the pan (if you are cooking more than can fit in the pan, heat the oven to 180º C, start them on the pan and place in the oven). Try not to have the pan too hot, you want them to have a golden colour but be careful not to burn them. Turn them occasionally as the cook. They should take about 8 minutes to cook. Once they are cooked let them rest for about 4 minutes.

While the pork is cooking you can start the mushrooms and gravy. Place a pan over medium to high heat, add the stock and thyme. Let this reduce by half and then add the cream and mustard. Cook this for another two or three minutes. Pour this into a bowl, give the pan a wipe and place it back over high heat. Once hot add some oil, butter and the mushrooms. Once the mushrooms have taken on some colour add the cream mixture back to the pan. Season with salt and pepper. Remove the thyme.

To serve place some mushrooms in the centre of a plate, put a piece of pork on top, drizzle with a little sauce. Serve with mash potatoes. Bain taitneamh as!

This promises to be an excellent night with all funds raised staying in the club to help us to continue providing excellent training facilities for our players.

Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship: Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior side had a brilliant victory last weekend in J P O'Sullivan Park, Killorglin as they took on Laune Rangers in the Mid-Kerry Senior Football Championship Semi-Final. There was little to separate the sides at the half-time interval after a low-scoring opening half that saw both sides try their best to adapt to the testing underfoot conditions. Both teams retired to the half-time break level at 0-4 to 0-4 with the Milltown/Castlemaine first half scores coming from Eanna O'Connor (0-3, all frees) and David Roche (0-1 from play) whilst Eoghan Hassett (0-2, 1 free), John Tyther (0-1, free) and Gearoid Hassett (0-1) kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side.

Milltown/Castlemaine made the brighter start to the second half as Jerome Flynn pointed twice inside the opening five minutes (one mark and one from play) to extend the lead to 0-6 to 0-4 but Laune Rangers hit back within minutes from an Eoghan Hassett close range free which was followed by a goal from John Tyther after Eoin Clifford was fouled inside the Milltown/Castlemaine square. This put Laune Rangers ahead 1-5 to 0-6 after 42 minutes. Rocked by the concession of the goal, Milltown/ Castlemaine didn't panic and held their nerve to gradually work their way back into the contest. Eanna O'Connor (free) and Eoghan Hassett (free) exchanged points in the 45th and 49th minutes respectively before John Tyther (free) pushed Laune Rangers lead out to three at 1-7 to 0-7 in the 52nd minute. It was looking unlikely that the visitors would score three points on the trot to bring the game to extra-time given the conditions allied with the clock being against them and it looked like a green flag would be needed to save the day but to their immense credit, Milltown/ Castlemaine rallied with three points without reply, all from play with Pa Wren, Jonathan O'Sullivan and Gavin McKenna (two defenders operating in the full-back line from that trio and a substitute) landing fantastic points from long range to make it 1-07 to 0-10 after 61 minutes. The drama wasn't quite over yet as following a foul on substitute Jonathan O'Sullivan, Eanna O'Connor had a chance to win the game for Milltown/Castlemaine with a 21 yard free from a very tight angle but the effort drifted wide and extra-time was required against the backdrop of fading light in Killorglin.

With bodies tired on both sides and a number of players suffering from bouts of cramp in the challenging conditions, it was a game that looked as if it could go either way. Eanna O'Connor (free) opened the scoring in the first half of extra-time but it was replied to in kind as a superb John Tyther point from play levelled matters at 1-08 to 0-11. The next score would prove to be crucial however and it came in the form of a goal from Milltown/Castlemaine substitute Sean Hogan as a long ball into the heart of the Laune Rangers rearguard seen Hogan rise above his man-marker and Padraig Ahern in the Rangers net to fist the ball home. This pushed

the away side into a three point lead heading into the interval in extratime, leading 1-11 to 1-08 and it always felt a long way back at that point for the hosts unless they could reply in-kind.

Milltown/Castlemaine were content to sit back, soak up the Laune Rangers pressure and play on the counter-attack for the second period of extratime and it worked out as Cathal Moriarty and then Jonathan O'Sullivan, both with points from play extended the lead out to 1-13 to 1-08 with five minutes to go. Eoghan Hassett did pull a point back for the home side towards the end with a close-range free but it was as close as they got despite their efforts and it was Milltown/Castlemaine who advanced to the 2022 Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Final when Paul Hayes blew his whistle for the final time all day on Sunday evening after a pulsating championship contest which swung back and forth all through. Congratulations to the players and management on a great win and we now look forward to the final this weekend against Beaufort.

To support the players and management, we are asking all club members to make a big effort this week in showing the club colours ahead of the Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Final. It would be great to see plenty of flags, signs and bunting up throughout the area along with our membership displaying their club gear.

U-10 Girls: End of Season Our U-10 Girls side had a fantastic year, a big thank you to the coaches and the parents who helped out during the season. Thank you to all the parents who brought their girls to the challenge games, it was greatly appreciated by the management and club. Finally a special mention to MKL senior ladies Kitty O'Dowd and Caoimhe Evans for presenting the medals recently to the group to conclude the year.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more ef ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynam ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

And from near and far, greetings and messages of goodwill were shared at home and online, through different social media at the dawn of a new year at various times in different hempispheres. NEW BEGINNINGS

History was made in 2021! A very enthusiastic and sporting group of young women formed a Camp United Ladies football team. Winning the first 3 games played against strong opposition teams, they are really making their mark on the Kerry Football circuit.

It is now well over 50 years since the first ever Camp Ladies Camogie made their mark too and some players went on to play for Kerry at the time.

Another bit of history from the past - Maureen O'Shea, Dwyer, Camp Camogie is grandmother of Amelia O Regan, our shining star in Munster Rugby.
