Dingle film maker John Kennedy has just released his new short film ‘An Gaiscíoch’ (The Warrior). The film is a snap shot into the life of a young Brian Boru and how he started his journey to be one of the most well known Irish kings. The project was filmed over two days in the mountains up past Annascaul Lake and the entire cast and crew are from, or living, in the West Kerry area. The film was finished and released at the start of September and has already started its journey into festivals. Most notably, it has become a finalist in the Global Lift Off Sessions, this is an international online subscription based platform. ‘An Gaiscíoch’ was voted one of the best by the audiences that watched it. A great achievement considering the sessions are held in 12 countries, so it has a massive reach. It’s not bad at all for a small group of film makers from West Kerry. John is in the process of organising a screening of the film in Dingle, hopefully by the middle of November. He also wants the film to be part of a showcase of West and Kerry talent, so if anyone has any short films they would like to be part of it please get in touch at: john@centreofthelineproductions.com

Bone Appetit for Stronger Skeletons Irene Flannery

these excretory operations are incidental to the major task of keeping our internal environment in an ideal, balanced state.’ (From Fish to Philosopher, 1953). His theory ties in with ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that connects bone health to kidney health. Although he does not allude to TCM in any of his research, it is interesting that this and much more recent research demonstrates that nutrients which support the smooth running of our kidneys are the same nutrients that promote bone strength. And conversely, foods that are taxing on the kidneys are associated with increased risk of bone disease. Sea vegetables, tofu, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, kale, sprouts, sesame and pumpkin seeds provide more nutrients for bone health than any other natural wholefood. Not only are they rich in calcium, they also provide, boron, magnesium and vitamin K. Our bones are made up of minerals we get directly from land and sea plants – or indirectly from the animal products we eat that feed on the same. It makes sense that these are more easily derived straight from the source rather eating our way through the animal kingdom in order to get a good supply. It is worth mentioning that bone broth made from the long-simmering of animal/ fish bones in liquid, provides an easily assimilated mineral-rich supply, as the minerals from the boiling bones are leached into the water over time. Other nutrients include collagen, vitamin C and omega 3, maintain flexibility and elasticity in bone tissue. It is easier to break a dried-out, rigid stick than one that can bend and flex when pressure is applied.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease, which literally means “porous bone” whereby the density and quality of bone are diminished. As bones become more porous and fragile, the risk of fracture is greatly increased. The loss of bone occurs silently and progressively often with no symptoms until the first fracture occurs. Osteoporosis is now diagnosed at earlier ages and its precursor Osteopenia seen in young adults in their twenties and thirties. Approximately one out of three women over 50 will have a fracture due to osteoporosis as will one out of five men over 50. Although genetic factors largely determine the size and density of your bones, lifestyle, nutrition, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol also play a key role. At every stage of life, a nutritious, broad diet promotes strong, healthy bones. This includes eating enough calories to sustain your frame throughout your life, moderate protein intake, healthy fat, as well as vitamins D and K and minerals - calcium, magnesium, zinc and boron. In childhood and adolescence, proper nutrition helps to build peak bone mass (maximum bone density, attained in the early 20's) thereby reducing vulnerability to osteoporosis later in life. This is not to say that there are not measures available to older adults but puberty is the optimum time in our lives to build great bones! Restrictive diets, fizzy drinks, caffeine and junk food, most associated with the teenage years, are a recipe for poor bone strength and inhibit the absorption of bone building nutrients at this critical time of growth.

Don’t forget your Vitamin D, necessary for the absorption of calcium and involved in many functions associated with bone health. Routine testing and appropriate supplementation are necessary at all stages of life, whether you are building bone, maintaining bone or re-building bone again. As Halloween draws near, let all the happy smiley skeletons (with their intact bones) be a reminder to take care of our own skeleton. Enjoy a (mainly) plant-based diet and regular outdoor exercise for enduring, strong bones and the greater quality of life that comes with them. Clean Home Dingle

A Clean Home for an Enjoyable Lifestyle

Most of the nutrients needed for bone strength are dependent on healthy fats to aid their absorption and assimilation into the body. A diet that includes nuts, seeds, oily fish, olives, avocado and good quality oils helps build and preserve bone integrity. For those who have had a fracture, it aids recovery and reduces the risk of having another fracture. Dietary factors that contribute to Osteoporosis include low calcium intake, excess sodium and phosphorous (found in fizzy drinks), high protein diets and trace mineral deficiencies. High protein diets strongly encouraged for weight-loss and body building need to be reviewed to ensure the longterm health of our skeletal frame is not compromised by the short-term gains of these type of diets. There is inconsistent evidence that the pH of body fluids plays a role in mineral loss from our bones. It has been said that bone loss as well as other diseases, occurs when the body is too acidic, mainly from eating too much meat, dairy, processed foods and refined sugars. While the debate rages on, it is worthwhile to note the words of one great physiologist Homer W Smith who wrote ‘It is no exaggeration to say that the composition of the body fluids is determined not by what the mouth takes in but by what the kidneys keep: they are the master chemists of our internal environment. When, among other duties, they excrete the ashes of our body fires, or remove from the blood the infinite variety of foreign substances that are constantly absorbed from our indiscriminate gastrointestinal tracts, 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Farming News Louis Murchan FARM INCOMES PRIORITISED IN BUDGET 2024

Funding to support the genotype-based schemes and the National Beef Welfare Scheme are to be continued. According to Mr McConologue, he will continue to provide the €200 per cow payment delivered in 2023 and an additional payment for sheep farmers which, with the Sheep Welfare Scheme will work out at roughly €20/ewe.

€20/ewe and €200 /cow secured

In relation to NITRATES AND THE ENVIRONMENT, over €700 million is to be spent on farm payments related to climate, biodiversity and water quality in 2024. This will include investment in on-farm nutrient storage to improve water quality, dealing with the Nitrates Derogation and several new Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS 3) measures. The grant rates will remain at 40% (YFS) and 60% (Women Farmers - How they get away with this, no-one will ever know). There is a possibility of a 70% grant for manure storage, but this is still awaiting EU approval.

Over €100m in supports for Beef and Sheep sectors (€200/cow; €20/ewe).

Other minor schemes that may be of interest to some include those in soil sampling, fodder support, multi-species swards and safety equipment.

Over €700 million in funding in 2024 for agri-environment initiatives.

Acres:

Higher rate of TAMS grant (70%) for new tanks for those importing slurry.

New separate TAMS investment ceiling for slurry storage tanks.

Accelerated Capital Allowances on Slurry Storage continued.

€8m in targeted support for Tillage farmers.

Key agri-taxation supports secured and land leasing targeted at active farmers.

Expanding ACRES to accommodate the full 50k participants promised under the CSP.

The fiasco that is ACRES got a mention, despite being budgeted for in 2022, with an increased budget of €40 million, which should have been in place, in the first place. DAFM had absolutely no idea about the potential interest in this scheme, despite every farmer in the country expressing an interest in a renewed REPS-Type scheme. But this is nothing like REPS. again, according to the Minister, Tranche 2 of the Scheme will open in the coming weeks, allowing 50,000 farmers in total to join. Given that there are already 46,000 farmers in the scheme, does this mean that only 4,000 additional farmers will be accepted. Now is the time for IFA, ICMAS, ICSA, Macra, INHFA, etc to ask questions.

Schemes for soil sampling and multi species swards.

€57m allocation to support Organic farmers.

€110m in funding provided to drive ambitions of the Forestry Programme.

There appears to be a significant push towards the Organic Farming Scheme, increasing the agricultural area under organic production, by allocating an additional €57 million to increase interest in this scheme. This is a 50% increase on the previous year, to reach 10% of all agricultural land being organic by 2030.

€6.5m dairy beef scheme.

Forestry Programme:

€5m funding for the genotyping programme.

Research & Development funding of more than €22m, in addition to support for Teagasc and the Marine Institute.

The dogs on the street know that forestry is a mess, currently. Getting a plantation established is the easy part. Securing a Felling Licence, so that you can realise your investment not.

Continued support for coastal communities through investment in fisheries harbours and community piers.

€8m for capital investment in the food sector.

€14.35 million to support the National Strategy for Horticulture

Continued support for State agencies supporting our Agri food and fisheries sectors.

Following a full day of speeches and counter-speeches, in which everyone on the opposition seemed to just argue against the new budgetary measures because it’s their job, we now get to digest the small points of Budget 2024. The main points of the budget, as far as farming is concerned are as follows:

Although the budget is the brief of Ministers O’Donoghue and McGrath, each minister gets to claim the glory for the proposed spending from their individual departments, and that’s exactly what Mr McConologue has done. The main aspect of the Agricultural proposals seems to focus in income and income support. Much of this is old news, just a rubberstamp of what we already knew, and the budget had more leaks (leeks) than a vegan’s meat pie!!! The 2024 Estimates provide a gross budget of €1.942 billion for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. McConologue stated that the goal in this budget is to support our farm families. The funding provided supports the sector’s environmental ambition and on-farm sustainability while at the same time supporting farmer incomes and providing vital infrastructure to support the development of our fishing sector and coastal communities. Budget 2024 supports farm families as targeted supports for farmers are implemented as provided for CAP Strategic Plan (CSP) worth an estimated €10 billion. Livestock Schemes: 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Organics:

The announcement of the new Native Tree Area Scheme last week created some interest. This is part of a €110 million allocation for 2024, from a total National Forestry Programme fund of €1.3 Billion from now to 2027. Designed to incentivize farmers to part-take in the scheme, let’s hope that some of these funds are used to free-up the Felling Licence log-jam. Establishment of 100%, with premia payments extending out to 20 years seems very enticing, culminating with a tax-free asset, on maturity. Farmers will also be allowed claim their BISS payment (but not ANC) on these lands. The Native Tree Area Scheme under the Programme, which could suit many farmers wishing to try out planting on a small scale. This scheme allows farmers to create small native forests or native forests for water protection of up to two hectares per holding, with grant and annual premium payments over a 10-year period totalling more than €22,000 per hectare. So why are more people not joining. Possible this is just a PR exercise gone wrong and maybe time for Pippa Hackett to get out and both answer and explain issues more clearly. Horticulture: Not a big topic locally or regionally, this area also did not receive a big allocation, with a total package of €14.35 million to support the National Strategy for Horticulture for 2024. Of this €3 million has been allocated to provide advance payments to Producer Organisations under the EU funded scheme for the fruit and vegetables sector. We don’t have the climate to grow them (yet) but peanuts come to mind, when reading these figures. Agri-Taxation Measures: These are meant to be of direct benefit to Irish farmers, with a taxation

policy that supports the transfer of land to the next generation. The Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT) has bee deferred to allow affected farmers to engage in the process of getting lands “de-zoned”. Also, Stamp Duty Consanguinity Relief on transfers of farmland has been renewed which encourages the lifetime transfer of farms, therefore helping to preserve farming. Farmers can also avail of Accelerated Capital Allowances for Slurry Storage, which will be available for another two years. All these are intended aid farmers to improve their environmental sustainability, generational renewal and farm safety. The Capital Allowances for the wear and tear of Farm Safety Equipment has also been extended, for Wear & Tear allowances for plant/machinery are usually given over an 8-year period at a rate of 12.5%. This measure however, provides for capital allowances of 50% per annum to be claimed over an accelerated two-year period where a person holds a qualifying certificate in respect of eligible equipment

This will then allow DAFM come check that you have retained this stock over the closed winter period. For example, if you claim that you have bags of pasture sward held over since this date, but an inspector checks you in early December and there is no visible sign of this, he will assume that you spread it during the closed season. Then the trouble begins. So, complete this in time, and correctly. Best of all, from now on, ensure that you retain no fertilizer over the winter. No problem! ACRES PAYMENTS It has been confirmed that ACRES payments for 2023 (Year 1) will start in late November, but all applications must pass regulatory controls and validations first. Payments to those who pass will be made but this will most likely drag on until the new year. Unfortunately, the minister neglected to point this out when he made the announcement. All participants must also complete a 1-day ACRES course in Year 1, but according to Ms Josephine Brennan (DAFM Johnston Castle), the first 85% of payment will be paid prior to the course, the second 15% once the course is complete. We will wait and see if she’s a woman of her word!!!

Research And Development: In relation to Farm Safety, Research and Development, and New Market Development, Minister Martin Heydon stated that he was dedicated to improving farmers safety, health and wellbeing with a dedicated fund of €2.5m in 2024. As far as Research & Development goes, additional €2m in funding has been allocated for this area, bringing the total budget to €22.45m while in relation to the area of new market development, it has been confirmed that Bord Bia will receive an allocation of €57m. NITROGEN FERTILIZER DATABASE Farmers are reminded that the end date for submission of end-of-year stock held on their farm is Monday 16th October 2023. This means that they must notify of all (or none) fertilizer held on that farm, on that date.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon This new series is taken mainly from the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) covering a period from the early 18th century to the 1920s. The focus will be on Kerry with occasional items from Clare and Cork. The Kerryman Offices Blown Up -Gloucester Citizen, 21 April 1921 The Inhabitants of Tralee were once more terrified on Tuesday night. Bomb explosions were heard after midnight and when morning broke it was found that fearful destruction had occurred. The most extensive damage of all was done to the offices of The Kerryman where a bomb was thrown through the front windows. The door was forced and armed men entered and smashed the printing presses rendering publication of the paper impossible. The damage is estimated at £4000. The offices of The Liberator were also destroyed. Last August the Kerry News and the Reporter offices were set on fire and Tralee is now without a newspaper except for the Kerry People, a weekly. The figure of the Croppy Boy was pulled off its pedestal and smashed and the 1798 monument was also destroyed. New Safe Harbour for the Blaskets

As soon as the Twomeys emerged from the church and began to walk away the Lynchs followed and surrounded them. During the conflict a man named John Hegarty, of the Twomeys party, received the cut of a scythe on his neck below the jaw which almost severed his head from his body. The man died instantly. Lucifer in Dingle - Tralee Chronicle, 14 November 1846 On last Tuesday the steam paddle ship Lucifer, under the command of Lieutenant Smith, arrived in Dingle Harbour and is to be stationed here. The ship’s officers are seeking tenders for the supply of ox and cow beef, vegetables and coal for a period of three months. (The Lucifer was a paddle gun-vessel designed to bombard coastal targets.) Transported for stealing a cow - Dublin Evening Post, 5 August 1815 The County Kerry Assizes ended on Wednesday last. There was one capital conviction which was a man named Mulvihill for stealing a cow who was ordered to be hanged. However, on the recommendation of the Grand Jury, the sentence was commuted to Transportation. (This meant he was sent to Australia or van Diemen’s Land, later Tasmania, for at least 7 years but probably more. This writer attempted to trace the convict in the records but all records prior to 1836 were destroyed in 1922). Slate Quarry

In 1847 the British Admiralty sent a survey ship to examine the potential of establishing a safe harbour between Inis na Bró and Inishvickillaun. Their arrival was in response to a letter sent to the Admiralty by Fr. John Casey and Captain Eagar the previous year.

In the last issue there was an article on the discovery of a slate quarry in the townland of An Baile Uachtarach/ Ballyoughteragh in 1868 but no update or information on it being exploited. Was the article a work of fiction?

Captain Eagar was the Lloyds shipping agent in West Kerry and Fr. Casey had been the parish priest of Ballyferriter since 1819. (He resigned in 1846 following the conversion of his curate, Denis Brasbie, to Protestantism).

It would seem not. Historian Tom Fox has been following up the story and points out that in the book Geology of the Dingle Peninsula, published in 2018, a sizeable bedrock of slate is present in the above townland, immediately north of Ferriter’s Castle.

Their plan was to create a floating breakwater between the above islands, on the eastern side, a distance of 260 yards (236 metres). The breakwater could be replaced with rock and stone in time. The harbour would provide shelter for fishing vessels, merchant vessels, the British fleet and would particularly benefit merchant ships coming from North America and the Caribbean who were unaware of the safe harbours of Ventry and Dingle. Anyway, nothing came of the proposal or the survey and while it was being carried out the country was being engulfed in a catastrophic event. Mother murders her Son - Glasgow Evening Post, 3 November 1891 A woman named Hanna Nolan was yesterday charged at Tralee with the murder of her son Patrick, aged 17. The youth’s body was found in a ditch near his home with marks of violence on his neck. An inquest was held and the coroner’s jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against persons unknown. However, the principal witness against the woman was her 13 year-old daughter who stated there was an altercation between the deceased and the prisoner. The lad disappeared and the prisoner subsequently confessed that she had held him by the throat and beat him till he was dead. The case was adjourned for a week. Ballyvourney Riot - Chester Courant, 6 August 1816 A riot took place recently at Ballyvourney between the Lynchs and the Twomeys. It appears the two groups have been hostile and unfriendly towards each other for many years. A local landowner, Sir Nicholas Colthurst, suggested that they attend separate churches for Mass. But while the Twomeys agreed to this the Lynches declined and waited for an hour and a half outside the church where the Twomeys were. The Lynchs party consisted of around one hundred followers who were armed with guns, swords, scythes, pistols and various other weapons.

Message from Fr Michael In the Gospel this past weekend we hear Jesus telling a parable about the landowner renting his vineyard. We do not often hear of tenants renting vineyards in this part of the world. What we are familiar with is tenants renting property. Some tenants are dream tenants and some others are hard work. Scarcely a week goes by that we do not read about a landlord who does not treat the tenants well or about tenants who wreck the property. In the parable, the tenants were ungrateful. The landlord (God) had sent many messengers, including His son, but the tenants treated them badly and put some to death. They even killed the landlord's son. They figured that they could be their own masters. The parable ends with the wretched tenants coming to a wretched end. As Christians we recognise that all we are and all we have are a gift from God. God gave us the gift of life itself. It is important that we have a spirit of gratitude to God for such great gifts. The great prayer of gratitude or thanksgiving is the Eucharist. Each time we pray and in particular each time we attend Mass we give thanks to God.

Scoil Naomh Eirc, buaiteoirí Cumann na mBunscoil Chiarraí Thiar (Scoileanna 3 oide)

Our prayers are asked for those attending the Synod of Bishops that began in Rome in recent days. We pray that the Holy Spirit will guide all the discussions. Later in the year there will be a listening evening in each parish. It is an opportunity for all to have their say in what the future of the Church might look like. Further details will be in the weekly newsletter. The Parish Pilgrimage following Cosán na Naomh on Saturday Sept 16th was a great success. The sun shone brightly as twenty three people walked the path of the Saints of old from Ventry to Kilmalkeader. A word of thanks to those who helped in the organising. Some people were so enthusiastic that they have suggested that the next pilgrimage should be from Kilmalkeader to the top of Mount Brandon. Watch this space!

News from Dingle Hub

of ICOS gives a talk on Co-Ops and what is possible. Discussions went on well into the night and there was a great buzz in the room.

Chorca Dhuibhne Tourism & Hospitability SEC Anyone thinking about retrofitting their homes or businesses should have a look at Retrofit.ie website. It’s a free and very user-friendly website. If you enter your MPRN number and Eircode it gives you details on what your BER is and what you need to do to get it up higher. You also have the option to put in your budget and see what work you can do for that price. One thing to note is that the website is designed by Chadwick's. If you decide to go ahead with the work, you can print out a details PDF and bring it to your nearest Chadwick's where they set you up with builders. But you can use the website for free and use it as a base for your research. There’s no commitment to go and do the work with Chadwick’s by using the website. Budget 2024 announced a 3.15-billion-euro Climate and Nature Fund. Exact details are yet to be decided but there will be a focus on cutting Ireland’s dependency on imported fossil fuels. They mentioned helping to make public and private buildings more energy efficient by supporting retrofitting. This is something that could be very valuable to businesses in the Tourism and Hospitality SEC. If you are in the Tourism and Hospitality sector in Corca Dhuibhne get involved in the sustainable energy community. Fill out your energy questionnaire in to join. Next members meeting Wednesday 25th October. Contact ann@dinglehub.com. Link to energy questionnaire: https://dinglehub.com/projects/ sustainability/tourism/ Farmers Forum The Dingle Hub in association with MTU held a very well attended Farmers Forum at this year's Dingle food festival. Four short videos entitled “Honest Conversations with Dinny Galvin” with interviews of 3 local Farmers; Ted Brosnan and Michael Prendeville Lispole,Tommy Reidy Stradbally and Ballydavid fisherman Seánín Johnson, discussed the past, present and future of farming and the fishing industry. Dr. Brendan Dunford from The Burren Farming for Nature project gave an excellent talk on what is possible when farmers take control of their own futures and coming together for their mutual benefit. 1. An raibh sibh neirbhíseach nó an raibh sceitimíní oraibh agus sibh ag teacht isteach ar scoil ar an gcéad lá? An dá rud: sceitimíní den chuid is mó - bhí mé neirbhíseach ach bhí mé ag tnúth le bualadh le daoine nua.

Scéalta ón bPobalscoil. Fáilte romhaibh go Corca Dhuibhne Beo! Is sinne Mairéad, Katie, Séamus, Seán, Mícheál agus Séamus. Táimid san Idirbhliain i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, agus is é seo an chéad eagrán nuachta a bheidh againn i gCorca Dhuibhne Beo. Beimid ag roinnt ár scéalta ón bPobalscoil agus na himeachtaí scoile a bheidh ar siúl againn san Idirbhliain i gcaitheamh na bliana.Tá súil againn go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh as agus go bhfanfaidh sibh linn go dtí deireadh na bliana! Siúlóid go Ceann Trá na Gréine

2. Cad é an difríocht is mó idir an dá scoil? Tá níos mó ábhair ar fáil - Tá i bhfad níos mó daoine sa rang agus sa bhliain liom. 3. An bhfuileann sibh chun caid/cispheil a imirt nó a bheith mar bhall de choiste éigin? Táim ag tnúth leis na comórtaisí caide a bheidh ag teacht suas - táim mar bhall den gcoiste Gaelainne agus táim ag súil leis an gcispheil a bheidh ag tosnú go luath chomh maith. 4. Cad é an rud is fearr libh agus cad é an rud is measa faoin bPobalscoil go dtí seo? Is maith liom na ranganna nua ach tá an iomarca obair bhaile - tá sé deas bualadh le cairde nua ós na bunscoileanna difriúla, ach sea tugtar an iomarca obair bhaile dúinn! 5. Cén chomhairle a chuirfeá ar dhaltaí bhliain a haon an bhliain seo chugainn? Ná bí buartha faoi - ná bíodh eagla ort ag teacht isteach, tá gach éinne andeas, taitneoidh sé go mór leat!

An chéad turas a eagraíodh dúinn ná turas go Ceann Trá. D’fhágamar an scoil ar a fiche tar éis a deich agus dheineamar cinnte go raibh ár gcuid uachtar gréine orainn!. Tar éis siúl breá fada a bheith déanta againn ar an mbóthar ard, stopamar agus bhí seans againn lón a fháil agus ár scíthe a ligint ar feadh tamaill. Bhí an taoide lán nuair a shroicheamar Ceann Trá agus bhí cead againn a bheith ag léimt ón gcé. Chuamar síos go dtí an tráigh chun cluichí a imirt san fharraige. Tar éis uair a chloig a chaitheamh san uisce bhíomar ullamh chun an bóthar a bhualadh agus ar aghaidh linn.

Nach orainn a bhí an t-ádh! Is léir go raibh lá den scoth, lán de chuileachta ag gach éinne a bhí páirteach! An Chéad Bhliain sa Phobalscoil Mar is eol do chách, is mór an rud é do dhaltaí rang a sé aistriú ón mbunscoil go dtí an mheánscoil. Seans go mbíonn sceitimíní ar dhaltaí áirithe, ach eagla an domhain ar dhaltaí eile. Chicken, Mushroom, Bacon and Tarragon Casserole Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

A perfect one pot to warm up any evening. It is that time of year that we can start looking forward to making a dish and let it slowly work away either on the stove or in the oven. Having a few good casserole recipes up your sleeve will always be handy for a mid-week meal.

a tray. Add the bacon, onions, garlic, thyme and bay leaf to the pot, keep the temperature high but keep stirring, after three minutes or so then add the butter and the mushrooms. Cook this for about five minutes. They should take on some colour, at this stage return the chicken back to the pot. Add in the stock and about half of the tarragon, bring this to the boil and then turn it down to a simmer. Cover and place in the oven for about 25 minutes. Remove from oven and add the cream. Continue to cook this for another 25 minutes or so. The liquid should have reduced

and the chicken should be tender at this stage. Season well with salt and pepper, add the remaining tarragon. Serve with either a creamy mash potato or a potato gratin. Bain Taitneamh As!

This is full of flavour, creamy chicken, mushroom, bacon and herbs all work together so well. Try it and I am sure you will love it. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Once the pot is hot, add a little oil and then add the chicken pieces. Allow them to brown, this will take at least five minutes. Once they have browned, remove them and place on West Kerry Live 29

Dingle Notes Richie Williams PEIL. Good Luck to the Dingle Senior Football Team who having come through the three first round games in winning form now meet Templenoe in the County Championship Quarter Final on Sunday next in Killarney with a 1.30p.m. throw in time. Most of the other club teams are also still involved in county and district competitions at their respective grades. To mark the 30 Anniversary of his untimely passing during a game in Pairc An Aghasaigh the West Kerry Clubs took part in the John Sheehy Memorial Under 11 Blitz on Sunday last in summer-like weather conditions. FOOD FESTIVAL. The 15th Féile Bia Daingean Ui Chúis was a tremendous success with over 60 Taste Trail Offerings and 50 Market Stalls dotted throughout the town over the weekend. Saturday's weather started with some dampness but soon cleared up followed by bright sunshine and huge crowds on Sunday. Well done to all involved especially the team of volunteers who put in many hours behind the scenes ensuring such a huge event ran smoothly in promoting Dingle as the Best Foodie Town In Ireland and among the best such festivals in the world. BLAS NA hÉIREANN AWARDS. The huge significance of the BLAS AWARDS which are run in conjunction with the Féile Bia can be judged by looking at the large single page adverts taken out by the large Supermarket Chains in the weekend papers highlighting their products as award winners in the Dingle based competition. The Awards Weekend follows weeks of judging by food experts of the products entered most of whom are small to medium producers hoping to develop their ideas and enhance their exposure to the hundreds of buyers who attend the Festival. Well Done to Artie and his crew on another success with this extremely competitive venture. BUSINESS. Following the recent closure of some local outlets mainly by retirements of the long established proprietors the Business Chamber welcome a few new operators to the commercial life of the town. Cístí Chorca Dhuibhne under the management of Joan Fitzgerald have set up their baking and retail outlet in Orchard Lane as well as supplying other shops and food establishments in the area. 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Cliona Walker and Kallam Moriarty choose the Food Festival to launch their new venture titled ÉALÚ featuring a range of locally produced chocolate related and made to order selections for special occasions. So another good opportunity for me to request our readers to SHOP LOCAL AND SUPPORT LOCAL PRODUCERS AND SAFE LOCAL EMPLOYMENT especially during the quieter off season period which is now upon us in Mid October. TIDY TOWNS. The judges in the National Tidy Towns Competition were very generous this year awarding us 12 extra points and writing a generally complementary report on the improvements made throughout the town by our volunteers, by business and property owners and the local authorities and national

bodies also. Full details of the results and all reports are available on www.tidytowns.ie. The Dingle Tidy Towns Group wish to complement Castlegregory on their award in the Pollinator Section and also say well done to our friends in Dún Chaoin and Clochán Breanainn who were the other entrants from West Kerry in this year's Competition. Also míle buíochas to our own volunteers and everybody who directly or indirectly helped to make and keep our town and area a better place to visit and live in all year round. SLAN. TAMALL!!!.

It’s All In The Mind:Peace In A World On Fire

We can take the time to be still and bear witness to the fear and grief and loss in the face of terrible atrocities. We can show solidarity by holding this space in our hearts.

Orla Smyth

As the fever of day calms towards twilight

FOR PEACE May all that is strained in us come to ease. We pray for all who suffered violence today, May an unexpected serenity surprise them. For those who risk their lives each day for peace, May their hearts glimpse providence at the heart of history. That those who make riches from violence and war Might hear in their dreams the cries of the lost. That we might see through our fear of each other A new vision to heal our fatal attraction to aggression.

Mindfulness can help us keep our balance in difficult times. It’s hard to know how to respond to the terrible accounts of violence and conflict that seem to surround us at the present time. We may think There's nothing I can do or I have my own problems or it’s too much for me- I can’t relate to it. In the face of so much anguish and uncertainty we can easily fall into feelings of helplessness, anger, despair or even seemingly callous indifference. Many of us feel impotent and insignificant in the midst of enormous tragedy and think that no matter what we say or do, it makes no difference anyway. And yet, every heart and mind contributes to the collective human condition just like every vote counts in an election. Some of us are more reactive and channel our feelings of outrage and abhorrence into a need to right the wrong, often adding fuel to the fire by stoking the flames of vengeance and retribution and filling the world with more anger and hatred and suffering. Mindfulness practice creates a ‘wedge’ of awareness that lessens our reactivity to events and challenging situations. The aim of mindfulness is not to avoid difficult feelings or thoughts but to see things clearly, exactly as they are without being swayed by emotions or ‘reactivity’. Seeing with clarity helps us to acknowledge and accept that we do not always have the wherewithal to change or fix a situation; but we can allow ourselves to be touched by the vulnerability and suffering that is within ourselves and all people. We can be open to compassion and connect to those in pain. When we suppress or ignore or dissociate from it, sometimes the pain and injustice of the world can feel like an invisible burden that we carry around with us. Practising mindfulness can help us to lift that weight and turn to face it. Once we are free from the anxiety of keeping it in the shadows, we may find the courage we need to take wise action or the wisdom and grace to accept when we can’t. Sometimes the best we can do is to care, even when we can’t alleviate the pain. As part of the global community each one of us can simply bear witness to the suffering, the shock, the loss, the existential fear that people are going through. When we attune to our humanity, the natural response as a human being to seeing pain being inflicted on another emerges. We feel that response of care, and instead of turning away, we turn towards. We honour everyone that has been hurt, that is suffering and is in need of help and support. We do not need to add to the hatred, the polarisation, the conflict. Darkness cannot drive out darkness ; only light can do that. Hatred cannot drive out hatred; only love can do that. - Martin Luther King

Sarah's Perfect Vision Fundraiser

Sarah Sheehy, a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne spent some time volunteering in Tanzania with an organisation called Perfect Vision over the summer. After her volunteering stint was over, she decided that she should try her best to raise funds for the non-profit organisation. Perfect Vision (PV), aims to educate, empower and uplift women in poverty and deals especially with women and girls who have been abandoned by their families/partners. PV operates different programmess in order to set them back on their feet. They also delicately help women who may be HIV positive, as it is still quite prevalent and unfortunately stigmatised in Tanzania. Caring Katie Chops Her Locks for Charities Transition Year student Katie Crean (15) grew her hair over the last three years knowing that she would eventually donate it to charity. She took on a whole new look after Tralee hairdresser Karina Sweeney from ‘Hair By Karina’ cut 14 inches off, which Katie is now donating to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charity that makes wigs for sick children. In less than a week the Mean Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh student raised over €800 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation, a charity which is close to her heart.

She is delighted with the response from the public. “I had set a target of €250 on iDonate not thinking I would reach it. However, after a few days I was thrilled to see it had reached €800. I’m hoping that I can get it to €1,000 before the closing date on October 17th.” To donate go to https://www.idonate.ie/ fundraiser/KatieCreansFundraisingHairCut.

“I wanted to give something to a great charity that helps a lot of people,” Katie said.

A caring Castlegregory teenager has this week taken the plunge and chopped 14 inches from her hair to help two charities.

“The Kerry Hospice Foundation were very good to my family two years ago when we needed them, especially the staff in the Palliative Care Unit. Since then I have wanted to do something to raise funds and awareness for them. My hair was long so I decided to keep growing it so that I could donate it to the Rapunzel Foundation and also collect donations separately for Kerry Hospice.”

West Kerry Live 35

Mol an Óige! Mícheál Ó hUanacháin Má tá séasúr sraithe Kerry FC ag druidim chun deiridh, ní taise é do na foirne eile acu. Is minic ná faigheann na comórtais náisiúnta faoi-aois an tacaíocht atá tuillte acu, i bhfoirm sluaite ag tarraingt ar na cluichí, nó i bhfoirm an aird a tharraingíonn tuairiscí ar na cluichí acu. Ón dtaobh amuigh, feictear do dhaoine uaireanta gur fál in aghaidh bhallraíocht sa Sraith Náisiúnta an t-éileamh go gcaitheann gach club foirne a chur san iomaíocht ag na leibhéil éagsúla óige atá ar fáil: Faoi-19. Faoi-17, Faoi-15 agus Faoi-14.

a bhuail siad Luimneach le naoi gcúl gan freagairt! Thit mí-ádh ar an dream Faoi-15 cúpla uair, nuair a fagadh taobh le deichniúr iad gar do thús chluiche i bPort Láirge, ach níor ghéill siad ach dhá chúl as san amach go deireadh. Fágadh gann arís iad i Luimneach mí Lúnasa, ach d'‫‏‬éirigh leo comhscór a shábháil in éagmais an chúl báire a thosnaigh. Bhí lucht Faoi-19 Chiarraí ag barr a ngrúpa sa chéim tosaigh dá sraith, ach níor éirigh leo cur leis an taispeántas san sa dara chéim. Mar sin féin, bhí bua maith acu sa chéad bhabhta de Chorn Enda McGuill, nuair bhí comhscór 1-1 idir iad agus Loch Garman ag deireadh an ghnáth-ama, 2-2 ag deireadh Am Breise, agus bhaineadar an bua le ciceanna éirice, a ceathair in aghaidh a trí. Séasúr gníomhach spleodrach ó am go céile ag na foirne faoi aois ar fad, más ea, agus fógra cinniúnach déanta mí Bealtaine go mbeidh foireann ban faoi 17 ag imirt don Ríocht an bhliain seo chugainn. Ní beag san mar dhul chun cinn do chlub nua sraithe ina gcéad bhliain imeartha. Is fada an aistear atá déanta ag lucht peile i gCiarraí ó na laethanta sna 1950daí, nuair a bhí foireann Dynamos Thrá Lí ag imirt i Sraith Dheasmhumhain, i Luimneach, cheal foirne eile sa Chontae a dhéanfadh sraith dá gcuid féin, go dtí tús na seachtóidí.

Ar ndóigh, tá costas nach beag ag baint le rannpháirtíocht sna sraitheanna san, ó thaobh taistil ach go háirithe, ainneoin go mbionn iarracht éigin de "réigiúnú" déanta ar na Grúpaí ina roinntear na comórtais. Fós féin, nuair a thugtar faoi ndeara go mbíonn suas le ceithre fhoireann Kerry FC ag imirt nach mór chuile sheachtain i lár an tséasúir, ní haon dóithín é costas na mbusanna! Bhí sé d'ádh ar mhuintir Pháirc Chnocán an Iolair go raibh taithí éigin acu ar chomórtaisí mar sin cheana: mar bheadh réamhtheachtaithe ann, bhí Tralee Dynamos páirteach san "A-Championship", mar a tugadh air, idir 2008 agus 2011, agus foireann ionadaíoch ón Kerry District League, a bunaíodh in 1971, i gcomórtas náisiúnta na sraitheanna contae, Corn Oscar Traynor, osna 1970daí ar aghaidh. Ní hamháin san, ach chuir an KDL foirne isteach sna Comórtais náisiúnta Faoi-17 agus faoi-19 le blianta beaga anuas, sara raibh aon chaint ar fhoireann sinsearach Ciarraíoch a bheith sa Sraith Náisiúnta. Bhí béim ar leith ag Billy Dennhy i dtús an tséasúir ar an rannpháirtíocht a bheadh ag imreoirí óga sa bhfoireann sinsearach, agus chloígh sé leis an bpolasaí san, Kennedy Amechi ag imirt go minic fós do na Faoi-19 chomh maith leis an bhfoireann sinsir, Togor Silong le feiscint ina measc, agus Cian Barrett is Cian Brosnan luaite freisin. Cé nár éirigh leis na foirne faoi aois dul i bhfeidhm go láidir ar na sraitheanna san, bhí torthaí ar fónamh acu. Mí Bealtaine, tar éís gur chuir an aimsir a gcluiche le Luimneach Aontaithe ó mhaith, bhuaigh an fhoireann faoi-17 orthu san athimirt le 6-0, agus fuair siad an ceann is fearr ar fhoireann Loch Garman le 5-1, gan trácht ar Chóbh a bhualadh 1-0 leis an gcic deireanach d'am cúiteamh ghortaithe ag deireadh Am Breise sa chéad bhabhta de Chorn Mark Farren. Beidh cuimhne fhada acu ar an lá

Tá aistear fada fós rompu anois, agus má tá díomá ar lucht tacaíochta de bharr an easnamh torthaí fábharacha i mbliana, níl ann ach comhleithéid an díomá a bhíonn ar lucht leanta foirne eile gach aon bhliain. Ní bhíonn ach curadh amháin i sraith ar bith nó comórtas coirn ar bith, faoi aois nó eile, bliain ar bith, agus fágtar na hiomaitheoirí eile ar fad diomách. Tá dea-chomhluadar orthu. Tá an óige ag teacht. Agus cuirfidh siad le cumas na foirne sinsearaí i mblianta amach anseo. Beidh laethanta eile ag an bPaorach, agus ag na Ciarraígh. Coinnígí bhur misneach!

Eamonn Mulvihill officiated at the wedding ceremony and the happy couple enjoyed a wonderful weekend of celebrations with family and friends. CHRIS O'DRISCOLL FUNDRAISER A massive thank you to all who sponsored races, adverts and raffle prizes, to everyone who bought tickets and made the night such a great one. We raised a massive €68,392. Thanks to all the organisers for their time and hard work. The night would not have been such a success without you. And lastly thanks to Kingdom Greyhound Stadium for hosting us. SUCCESS Congratulations to Breda Quirke on her wonderful ability and recent achievements. She is amazing! Bredas story is as follows My last Triathlon was in Valentia which is the reason I got into triathlons, having received an entry for Valentia last Christmas. I couldn’t swim, not great on a bike but said I have nine months to achieve it. Started swimming lessons in the pool in January and progressed to open water swimming in Fenit and the Maharees with the encouragement of my sister Denise and brothers Brian and John, all experienced Triathletes and Ironman athletes. I completed and achieved what I thought was impossible Fenit Triathlon in July and in August was the swimmer in the Youghal Ironman. I took part in the family relay team on the 20th of August, Dingle Half Marathon.

On 2nd September I Swam around Fenit LightHouse. On 9th September completed the Hardman Valentia Triathlon to finish the 2023 season. So all the boxes ticked Hardman, Ironman, Triathlons and LightHouse swim. Well done Breda, we are all so proud of you. CAMP COMMUNITY COUNCIL Dinners for seniors and active retired resumed on Thursday last in the Old School Camp. A delicious meal was served followed by Bingo. It is a lovely get together on these dull winter afternoons. The meal is served at 1.00 p.m. Contact number - 086 64085904. CAMP DEFIBRILLATOR The Antiques, Art and Vintage Fair to be held at The Ballygarry House Hotel on Sunday, 8th. October is postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Murphy and Carla Qualter. The group were nominated for the award by their Agricultural Science teacher, Karen Blennerhassett, who recognised the positive contribution these young people have made to their community in Castlegregory. Well done all. OBITUARY Joan Murphy nee O’Sullivan of Ard na Lí, Oakpark, Tralee and formerly Tubber, Lispole, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on 21st September, beloved wife of the late Séamus and dear mother of Colm, Bríd, Cormac, Ronán & the late Breanndán. Sympathy is extended to all the family and to her sister in law, Ann Maloney, Garrahies, Camp. Joan was a lovely lady, much loved and highly regarded by all who knew her. Joan was always proud of her West Kerry heritage. Rest In Peace, Joan.

La Leche League Dingle/ West Kerry Nice turn out at the end of September. We Death Cafe

spoke about many things including the memories we have of people who have died and what they enjoyed most. We spoke of how sorrow can swallow you and how we are not able to communicate properly. We sometimes do not understand our emotions or even know how we are feeling properly. We spoke of some of the thoughts in the recent Michael Harding book " All the tings left unsaid " where we dont say we love each other often enough. Time is not finite and it is important to speak regularly of our love and admiration for our loved ones.

The sharing of memories is so important and Systems isSolar so difficult when we have no one to share them with when our own family and friends Tom Kennedy have died. Next Cafe will be late in October or Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide early November. Still checking on dates. Ar na príomhleaganacha den scéal tá Loingeas Mhac Uisnigh, Oidhe Chlann Uisnigh agus Imeacht Chlann Uisnigh. Baineann an scéal leis an Rúraíocht, agus le réamhscéalta na Tána go sonrach. Is ann a déantar cur síos ar éalú na hógmhná, Deirdre, ó Chonchúr mac Neasa go hAlbain i gcuideachta Naoise mhic Uisnigh, agus ar dhíoltas Chonchúir - gníomh ba chúis leis an deighilt a bhí i measc na nUltach le linn Táin Bó Cuailgne.
