Manx Shearwater fledglings. What are they? They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months. Why are they stranding in our towns and villages? They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs. What can you do if you find one? Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild. Four good reasons to get involved

• We are seeking to hire an experienced deli assistant to cover maternity leave from Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm - leading to a full-time position afterwards

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

• We are also seeking to hire a senior shop assistant for close down responsibilities and duties, 3-10.30pm • Weekend & Part-Time Deli & Store positions also available To apply contact 087-7631570 (call or whatsapp), apply in-store or email: daybreakdingle@gmail.com

West Kerry Live 3 STAFF WANTED STAFF WANTED Inver Daybreak Uí Fhlaithearta is seeking to fill the following positions:

2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south.

Manx Shearwater Alert!

1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come!

4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it. Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

Where apples really climb to superfruit stardom is in the non-digestible part of the fruit, the parts we don’t absorb – its fibre, pectin and polyphenols. These feed our friendly intestinal bacteria, particularly in the large intestine, reducing inflammation, risk of diverticular disease and colon cancer. Bacterial imbalance in the colon is now recognised as a trigger for metabolic disorders including diabetes and obesity, another good reason to have an apple a day, at least!

Irene Ní Fhlannúra Ireland is currently at the height of its Apple season, yet of the €100 million Irish people spend buying apples every year, only 5% are Irish grown. In the block-buster book on indigenous Irish apples “The Heritage of Apples in Ireland” 2014, Dr. Michael Hennerty, identifies sixty-eight varieties of apples native to Ireland. Apparently, there are over fifty more varieties that were documented in the past but we no longer grow them – that’s a lot of apples! According to the author, we could be enjoying Irish apples all year round, except for a gap from July to mid-August, by which time we would be sick of eating apples and dive into the strawberries instead. Apples have been with us for a long time, growing wild in Central Asia and China ten to twenty million years ago, and through evolution and migration of animals and people came further west around 5000BC. Adam and Eve almost got them banned after the shenanigans in the Garden of Eden, but luckily for us, apples have been happily growing here since about 2000BC. St. Patrick allegedly planted a few apple trees in Armagh, the Orchard County, when he was here and seed funded the first cider house, a native industry continued by the monks right up to quite recent. Apple trees were classed as noble trees, protected by Brehon Law (7th Century) and anyone found damaging an apple tree would have been fined five milking cows at the time. With the growing interest in sustainable agriculture, there has been a small increase in land used for apple trees, both commercially and smallscale projects. Most of the national crop ends up as cider or apple juice, making it difficult to source local apples to eat throughout the year. Even though they might not be as alluring as the more exotic fruits, it is hard to beat our native apples, grown and picked nearby, without the use of chemicals or sprays.

Irene Flannery (Ní Fhlannúra), Nutritional Therapist at www.omnom.ie Weight Loss Plans & Food Intolerance (in Dingle) online.

“Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread” - first documented in Wales in 1866, and later revised to the more polite version “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. Either way, there is a bit of truth in it. Apples are well known to help with weight loss by curbing the appetite. For those who eat too much, starting a meal with an apple can help reduce the calories eaten at that meal. Even the smell of an apple, can trick the brain into thinking you have eaten one, and so sniffing an apple 20mins before mealtimes lessens your calorie intake. Apples contain vitamin C just under its skin, well known for its immune boosting power, keeping colds and flu at bay as well as creating the glue (collagen) that keeps us together both physically and mentally. Quercetin, also in apples, is a lesser known antioxidant, but a powerful player against inflammation, asthma and allergies. Another beneficial nutrient in apples is catechin - known to improve both brain and muscle function. Apples stewed with chamomile can shorten the course of unspecified diarrhoea in children and the elderly, handy to know this time of year!

6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo How Do You Like Them Apples?

Raiding apple trees was one of our favourite end-of-Summer activities growing up in town (I won’t say where), and although the trees are gone, our gang have disbanded, I can finally justify our actions! I will happily pass on the blueprint for a good raid to my children and hope they will be fruitful in their quest to get local apples, after all, neither my kids nor the apples fall far from the tree!

Pectin, most noted for setting apple jam and jellies, has been central to the revolutionary treatment for exposure to nuclear radiation. Vassili Nesterenko (1934-2008), a physician from Belarus and a former director of the Institute of Nuclear Energy at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, pioneered a treatment with apple pectin for children living in highly contaminated areas and eating highly contaminated food, by reducing Cesium 137 levels in the exposed children. In a post-Chernobyl programme (1996–2007), 160,000 children received the pectin treatment. As a result, the Cs137 levels in their organs decreased after each course by an average of 30-40% with significant reductions noted in as little as 16 days. Apple pectin has also been found to prevent the deadliest radioisotope, Plutonium-239 from absorbing in the gastrointestinal tract. With this kind of backing, it would certainly do no harm to include an apple or two a day, particularly if working or living in polluted or toxic Applesenvironments.areprobably one of the simplest foods to enjoy – just give it a wash under the tap and eat it. If you are lucky enough to have a good haul of apples this year, making jams ,jellies and cider-vinegar will preserve them and you get to enjoy them for a little longer. You can also make tarts and apple sauces than can be stored in the freezer. Early-harvested apples do not store as well as their later counterparts, and all apples continue to respire until you eat them or cook them. When storing apples, make sure they are free from blemishes and bruises because these will go off quickly and can spread rot to other apples. Wrap apples for storage in waxed paper and keep in a cool place such as a cellar or fridge. Try to pack them in single layers as piling them on top of each other can bruise them, causing them to rot. Ideally they should be kept at about 0 to 4 degrees Celsius to slow the ageing process. With our warmer Winters, leaving them in the garage or the boot of an old car might not be the best place.

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo Farming News Louis Murchan ACRES GENERAL ACTIONS: FULL LIST AND PAYMENT RATES

complicated and time consuming, compared to previous agri-environmental schemes such as REPS, AEOS and GLAS.

• Applicants who are participants in the Native Woodland Establishment Scheme or agroforestry grant and premium category (GPC);

The ACRES Saga rolls on with more confusion than is really necessary. It now appears that DAFM now use social media and news information sites such as Agri-land and other such sites to get their message across.

• Applicants with at least 0.5ha of grassland within the Natura mapped area in 2021. The applicant must select one of the following actions on this

The Late Great PR Guru Larry Sheedy once said (to me) that you should always assume that the reader does not have a clue what you are writing about. Therefore, you should explain everything and allow for no misunderstanding. No Thesemistakes.include the payment rates for the various general actions that can be taken under the scheme. All farmers in the scheme will be able to pick from among these actions, but some farmers will be restricted in what options they can pick. This will depend on whether they are in the ACRES Co-operation or ACRES General approach, and which priority tier of the scheme they are in.

• Applicants with at least 0.5ha of land within the breeding wader hotspot mapped area. The applicant must select one of the following actions on this

EnvironmentalExtensivelyLow-inputland:grassland;grazedpasture;management of arable fallow.

• Applicants with at least 0.5ha of land within the vulnerable water mapped area in 2021. At least one of the following actions must be taken on this Riparianland:buffer strips or zones (grassland or arable as appropriate); Management of intensive grassland next to a watercourse; Planting trees in riparian buffer zones; Planting a new hedgerow; Low-input EnvironmentalExtensivelygrassland;grazedpasture;management of arable fallow.

• Applicants who can prove membership of a rare breed society at the time of application, and who select the conservation of rare breeds •action; Applicants who are registered with, and approved by, one of the organic control bodies and holds a licence as an organic farmer at the time of Farmersapplication.whoare not eligible for Tier 1 may instead be eligible for Tier 2, which will give them the second-highest level of priority access to ACRES. Tier 2 farmers include the following:

• Applicants with a whole farm stocking rate exceeding 130kg of livestock manure nitrogen (N) or more than 30ha of arable crops in 2021. At least one of he following actions must be taken: Minimum tillage (min-till) on a minimum of 10ha; Catch crops on a minimum of 6ha; Overwinter stubble on a minimum of 4ha; Grass margins on a minimum of 500m (grassland or arable as appropriate); Low-input peat grassland on a minimum of 0.5ha.

• Applicants who take one of the following tree-planting actions: Tree planting to a minimum of 100 trees; Planting trees in riparian buffer zones to a minimum of 10 trees; Tree belts for ammonia capture from farmyards to a minimum of 0.18ha.

All farmers should note the following points on general actions:

It now appears that the ACRES Press machine is now in drip-drip mode, and releasing bits of information to various media outlets, while not providing the required details to those who need it first and most, The Advisor.

Unfortunately, this is not a satisfactory modus operandi, as there is a serious lack of detailed information, there is no published Terms and Conditions nor is there a scheme document available to advisors, so that they can do their job. Not a very satisfactory situation. It is now incumbent on the farm lobby to ensure that their members and charges are protected and demand that DAFM now begin the responsible roll-out of ACRES, to alternatively suspend its launch until they are actually ready to implement it, and have Theall-their-ducks-in-a-row.schemeisunnecessarily

It is very difficult to advise a farmer as to what he is required to do to be eligible for the scheme, or how much he can potentially earn when one does not have the necessary information. To say that advisors should look up the IFJ or Agri-land (a very reputable medium) or whoever, is an unprofessional roll-out of what is supposed to be the primary agri-payment scheme for the next five years. That said, key details have been posted by DAFM on-line on some of the aforementioned sites, but as they are not officially issued to advisors, read with caution. These will give farmers a good idea of what they face, but not the full picture, until it is painted for them.

• Applicants with at least 0.5ha of land within the geese and swan mapped area in 2021;

The mandarins in Johnstown Castle and Agriculture House should now consider pushing it back until 2023 and rolling over GLAS for another year, until they get it right.

Farmers in ACRES General who have the most environmentally important land will be in ‘Tier 1’, giving them priority access to the scheme.

•ExtensivelyLow-inputland:grassland;grazedpasture.Applicantswithat least 0.5ha of tillage land within the Natura mapped area in 2021. The applicant must select one of the following actions on this Unharvestedland: cereal headlands; Winter bird Environmentalfood;management of arable fallow.

• Applicants with at least 0.5ha of land within the high-status water objective mapped area in 2021. Applicants must select at least one of the following actions on this land: Riparian buffer zone strips or zones (grassland or arable as appropriate); Management of intensive grassland next to watercourses; Planting trees in riparian buffer zones; Planting a new hedgerow; Low-input EnvironmentalExtensivelygrassland;grazedpasture;management of arable fallow.

Farmers who do not fall into the above tiers are considered to be in Tier 3, reflecting no particular priority access to ACRES. For these farmers, the full slate of actions is available to choose from.

• The commonage action is results based, but a participation payment is set at €50/ha on the first 20ha irrespective of the results-based

Tier 1 farmers include the following:

• Applicants with at least 0.5ha of commonage land declared on the 2021 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS);

HAVENS HORSE FEED score. The results-based payment is inclusive of the participation payment;

• For low-input grassland and low-input peat grassland actions, participants may apply for a late meadow bonus payment of €50/ha;

A full and detailed article on the scheme will be printed when the full and proper details are available. In the meantime, enjoy the read.

• For the conservation of rare breeds action, breeding females that produce a registered offspring above the basic eligibility requirements will be paid an additional payment of €75 per progeny registered up to the overall maximum payment ceiling;

ACRES FARM SUSTAINABILITY PLAN SYSTEM OPENS Just to continue on the previous topic. The Farm Sustainability Plan Portal was recently opened for submissions by advisors, on behalf of clients/ ACRES applicants. Need one say more? The same points pertain. Can a farmers seriously submit to a five year scheme with onerous penalties hanging over their heads, without knowing exactly what they are letting themselves in for. No Scheme Document? No Terms & Conditions? No Clue!!! I rest my case, Your Honour!

• Actions with no explicit maximum number of units can be paid up to the maximum payment ceiling. If this makes things any clearer, Larry Sheedy was a good teacher, (which he was). If it doesn’t, the problem doesn’t lie with Larry (or with yours truly)!! One can only work with the material he is provided with.

West Kerry Live 15 From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted

Burnham West Bridget Kelleher, 25; Mary Lyne, 28, and Ellen Griffin, 20, were the sole occupants of a house in Burnham West. All three were ‘Dairy Maids’ and spoke Irish and English. They probably worked on Lord Ventry’s estate. Their duties would have included milking the cows, making butter and cheese and probably other household or farmyard work.

The Colony (Dingle) Johanna Griffin, 56, lived in the Colony and, like Ellen Shea above, she was a ‘Midwife’. She was married to Patrick Griffin, 67, who was a ‘Slater and Plasterer’. Their daughter Bridget, 22, was married to John Flaherty a ‘Fisherman’. All spoke Irish and English.

Knockglass Adela MacIntosh, 47 and single, lived in Knockglass (Camp area) and recorded her occupation as ‘Lady Tenant Farmer’. Living in the same house was her aunt, Ursula Rae, 84, whose occupation was ‘Gentle Woman’. The farm must have been substantial because there were three ‘Farm Servants’ in the house also. Ballyferriter Mary Kennedy, 22 and single was the head of her household in Ballyferriter. Her occupation was ‘Shop Girl in Liquor Trade’. Her sister Eliza, 11, lived with her. Both spoke Irish and English. Inch Mary Catherine Herlihy, 20 and single, lived in a house with 14 people in Inch and her occupation was ‘Governess’. Her employers were Justin McCarthy, 41, and his wife Annie, 34. They were a farming family with eight children. They also employed a nurse and three servants. All occupants were Roman Catholic. Justin McCarthy signed the census form and gave the address as ‘Inch House, Annascaul, Co. Kerry’. Murreagh Mary Moore, 60, was a visitor to a house in Ballynavenooragh on Census night in 1901. She was a widow and her occupation was recorded as ‘Mendicant’ which meant she had to beg for a living. Six other people in West Kerry declared ‘Beggar’ as their occupations in the Census. Mendicant is a softening of the word ‘Beggar’. There are many religious orders that practice a mendicant way of life and survive by collecting alms.

Caheracuttera (Lack) Ellen Moynihan, 41 and a widow, lived in the townland of Caheracuttera with her six sons and one daughter. Her occupation was recorded as ‘Female Farmer’. The whole family spoke Irish and English.

Great Blasket Mary Shea, 30, was the daughter of widow Ellen Guiheen, 54. There were 145 people on the island on Census night and apart from the main occupations of ‘Farmer/Fisherman’ Mary was the only female to record an occupation – she was a ‘Seamstress’.

‘Occupation’Creedonandat

Ballyknockane (Camp area). Mary Ashe, 49 and a widow, was a ‘Publican’ in Ballyknockane. She had five sons and two daughters. One daughter, Mary, 20, was recorded as ‘Teacher – unemployed’. Her mother was the only member of the household who spoke Irish. Cloghane Ellen O’Connor, 63 and a widow, was a ‘Publican’ in Cloghane and her son Michael was a ‘Farmer’. They both spoke Irish and English.

Ballyarkane Eighter (Lack) Ellen Shea, 50, lived in the above townland with her husband James, 54, and their six children. Ellen’s occupation was ‘Midwife’. Apart from their two youngest children the occupants spoke Irish and English.

Emlagh Slat (Ventry) Kate Fitzgerald, 45 and a widow, whose occupation was ‘Farmer and Grocer’ lived in Emlagh Slat. There is no record of children. Her niece Johanna Manning, 20, was a ‘Bookeeper’. There were three ‘Farm Servants’ and one ‘Domestic Servant’ in the household. All occupants spoke Irish and English.

Mary Spillane, 46 and a widow, was also a ‘Publican’ in Cloghane while her daughters Catherine, 18, and Mary, 17, were ‘Shop Assistants’. There were thirteen people in the household and all but the four youngest spoke Irish and English.

least one woman recorded her occupation as ‘None’. Most married women had families and busy domestic lives as housewives and probably worked on the family farm too. Was their role in the household seen as not worth recording or did they see themselves as not having an ‘occupation’, in terms of employment or generating income?

A group of around 20 writers spent a week in Dingle earlier this month and a lot of that time in Dingle Hub. Here for an annual Summer Writing Seminar, as part of Bay Path University’s Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction, the mostly American group ranged from new writers to international best-selling authors. Bay Path University in Massachusetts offers this course as an all-online programme with the week in Dingle (happening since 2015) as an elective class that allows students to meet and work together in person. It’s also open to other writers who can attend the workshops, readings and lectures from creatives such as Paul Muldoon, Ann Hood, Ted Deppe, Annie Deppe, Jean Hanff Korelitz, Anne Pinkerton, Suzanne Strempek Shea and Tommy Shea who were all part of this year’s faculty. Is iriseoir ó Massachusetts é Tommy Shea, ba as do Chathair an Treantaigh in aice le Ceann Trá dá athair, Seán ''The Diamond'' Shea, agus ba as do Ghallaras dá mháthair, Maureen Brown Shea.

Tommy Shea is a Massachusetts journalist whose father, the late Seán "The Diamond" Shea, was from Cahiratrant near Ventry and whose late mother, Maureen Browne Shea, was from Gallarus. Each year Tommy’s workshop "Talk of the Town" has delegates meet and interview locals. They met people like Dingle artist Carol Cronin and Johneen Brosnan, who talked about Fungie and life since his departure. Just two of the locals who made their group feel very welcome during their stay at Dingle’s Bambury's

The organisers had visited Dingle Hub on their last trip and thought our facilities were a good match for their functional and creative needs. It worked very well having this friendly group of creatives in Dingle Hub and we hope to work with them again next year.

‘Níl tú id aonar’

I would appeal to you if ever you feel at breaking point – ‘Sín amach do lámh’ – please, please reach out – ‘labhair le duine éigin’ – Speak to someone be it family, friend, neighbor, doctor, or contact one of the many services available, Pieta, Aware, the Samaritans, where they can listen, and you can speak in confidence to them of your situation. They are there to listen, to advise and to guide you through your difficulties and burdens that may be weighing you down. Remember, seeking assistance is not a sign of weakness – it’s the 1st step in the right direction – a problem shared is a problem halved…

If you see someone struggling, you have a responsibility too, and don’t be afraid to approach and ask if they’re ok, and assure them that it’s ok not to feel ok. They may deny and decline your offer, but you will have tried. However, many of those who are struggling with life and their mental health are often expert at hiding their struggles and emotions. They very often are the ones who are always smiling. In fact they are inclined to fool all of us, and unfortunately take us all by surprise.

22 Corca Dhuibhne Beo Sláinte is Folláine ó Fhéile Lios Póil le Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Beannachtaí buí Lúnasa chugat, a léitheoir, agus ’sé mo ghuí gur chuaigh goradh gréine na seachtaine seo chaite chun do thairbhe. Tá breis is mí ann ó chuireas peann le pár do Chorca Dhuibhne Beo toisc mé a bheith gafa, agus is amhlaidh a bheidh go ceann tamaill, ach beidh caoi agam mír a bhreacadh ó am go chéile. Tuairisc ar ghné dhílis agus íogair / genuine and sensitive d’Fhéile Lios Póil (an 43ú Féile as a chéile) is mó atá anso agam. Chailleas an chéad chúpla lá den bhFéile toisc mé agus mo chéile ’bheith ar bhainis i Sicilia na hIodáile. Bí ag trácht ar scaladh dearg, níor airíos a leithéid riamh im shaol, 36o sa tsáipéal, ar éigin a chailleas an oiread allais ar an láthair bheannaithe úd is a dheineas in aon chluiche chaide dá dhéine a dh’imríos! Bí míreanna eile ar chlár na h-oíche chomh maith. Seo a leanas blaiseadh d’aitheasc misniúil, léirsteanach / courageous, perceptive ó Mháire Uí Éimhín le linn na h-ócáide: Míle buíochas le Coiste Pobail/Féile Lios Póil as an deis seo a thabhairt dom cúpla focal a roinnt libh anocht. Nuair a chonaic mé an teideal ar Chlár na Féile Nurturing Our Resilience/Teacht Aniar á Chothú Ionainn, ba dhóbair go dtáinig fuar-allas amach tríom – Testing my Resilience, mar adéarfá! … Bhí sé dian ormsa agus ar mo chlann teacht aniar nó misneach a mhúscailt agus a chothú tar éis do Phaddy (ár ndearthár) lámh a chur ina bhás fhéinig i ndeireadh an Aibreáin 2021. Ní rabhamar ag súil leis. Éinne go raibh aithne agaibh ar Phaddy, fear lách, cineálta, séimh, bog, le meangadh gáire i gcónaí ar a aghaidh ab ea é. Bhí sé cuideachtúil, is ba bhreá leis comhluadar an té a thiocfadh ina threo, agus ní raibh deabhadh ná deifir riamh air. Locht amháin a bhí air, áfach, nach bhfreagraíodh sé an fón mura n-oir sé dó, agus níorbh ait dúinne é nár fhreagair sé, agus ba mhinic nár chuir sé glaoch thar n-ais go ceann cúpla lá, agus fuíollach ‘missed calls’ ar a ghuthán aige idir an dá linn! Chuamar i dtaithí air seo, agus níorbh ait liom nár fhreagair sé téacs a chuireas chuige ar an Aoine: “go mbeadh Pádraig ag teacht abhaile ón ospidéal ar an Luan”. Faraoir, go dtáinig mo cholceathrar Maidhc ar Phaddy tráthnóna Dé Sathairn. Bhí ciorraithe Covid i bhfeidhm ag an am, agus ní sochraid fé mar ba cheart a bheith aige, ach thacaigh an pobal ó chian is ó chóngar linn ag an am agus ó shin i leith. Táimid ag treabhadh linn chomh maith agus is féidir linn, agus fós, cé go loirgím freagraí, ní freagraí le fáil. What is Resilience? What is Resilience and how can we nurture it within ourselves? Resilience is what gets us through every day life. It’s what helps us when we go about our business and handle what comes our way. It’s our ability to cope and how we can bounce back, stay on track and manage ourselves when we are faced with challenges, stresses and pressures in life. We have to navigate through them as best we can, but at times this is difficult. Some master it, others however loose themselves and their sense of direction along the way. ‘Sín amach do lámh’

Solar Systems Tom Solar..panelsKennedyortubes,

Ach bun agus barr an scéil: an teachtaireacht a scaipeann an scannán ná “Níl tú maith a dhóthain mar atá tú". Má athraíonn tú, beidh tú níos sásta, agus beidh suim ag leaids ionat.” Sin cad a tharlaíonn do Sandy, carachtar Olivia. Cén sórt teachtaireachta í sin, go h-áirithe do dhaoine óga?! B’fhéidir – B’FHÉIDIR – go ghlacadh leis an rosc sin 50 bliain ó shin, i dtréimhse níos soineanta agus traidisiúnta. Ach, i gcaitheamh na mblianta, le “Woke-ness”, agus an briogáid P.C., conas nach bhfuil bánú tar éis a bheith déanta air? Leis an gcur agus cúiteamh le 20 bliain anuas, na cásanna cúirte le daoine mór le rá, an fheasacht pholaitíochta atá forleathan anois, agus an gluaiseacht #MeToo, conas, chomh déanach le 2004, go vótáladh é mar “An Ceoldráma is Fearr Riamh” ar an stáisiún teilifíse Channel 4? Is cuimhin liom an lá a thuigeas cad a bhí i gceist i ndáiríre ag deireadh an scannáin, 25 bliain ó shin. Bhraitheas píosa beag maslaithe, cé nach raibh náire nó aithis ann domsa!” Bhraitheas go raibh feall déanta. Scéal grá súáilceach, draíochtúil, rómánsúil, tarraingteacht – loite. Cén fáth go raibh daoine fós ag féachaint air? Agus ag canadh na n-amhrán do scrúdaithe amhránaíochta agus ag éisteachtaí ? Agus ag seinm “You’re the One That I Want” ag gach uile cóisir 21ú agus bainis? Ach, le himeacht aimsire, táim tar éis tabhairt faoi ndeara go raibh raidhse rudaí nach raibh chomh úr-glan is a cheapas ag an am na blianta ó shin; manna ar t-léine a chaitheas go minic. Líntí ó leabhair. Magadh le dhá mhíniú. Liricí ó amhráin éagsúla. An fiú braistint “Maslaithe” nó “Náirithe” fúthú ar fad? Bheifeá traochta, uimhir a h-aon, agus ag siúl timpeall le scamall tharat an t-am ar fad, uimhir a dó. Is dócha nach bhfuil luach ar teaspach a bheith ort, mar sin an saol – leanfaidh sé ar aghaidh ar aon nós, agus cur amú fuinnimh a bheadh ann a bheith “Maslaithe” faoi na h-aon ní. An rud is dócha is ciallmhaire ná taitneamh a bhaint as na rudaí a úsáideann tú féin (nó a chaitheann tú nó a chíonn tú nó a ídíonn tú. Iad a roghnú as do stuaim féin le do chaighdeán pearsanta agus a bheith sásta le do chinneadh. I gcónaí beidh daoine nach n-aontaíonn leat, agus ní gá dóibh. Fadhb ar bith. Braithim féin fós saghas idir dhá chomhairle má chloisim nó má chím, “Grease,” mar is aoibhinn liom é, agus anois ag an am céanna is fuath liom é! Ach táim aireach faoi sin anois agus bainim taitneamh as – go pointe áirithe. Taitneamh coinníollach, d’fhéadfá a rá. Fós ní thuigim conas go scaiptear an teachtaireacht atá ann go forleathan faoi láthair, ach tá blúirín beag bídeach dóchasach (amaideach?) ar chúl mo chinn agus ag rá liom “Tá sé go ceart go leor, Louise – léiríonn an scannán seo do dhaoine óga na laethanta seo cad NACH é an rogha ceart.” Seafóid, ach seans! Tá an saol ró-ghearr, mar a léiríonn cailliúnt na mná uaisce a bhí i ról Sandy sa scannán. Anasheans go bhféachann tromlach na ndaoine air agus cosúil leis na milliúin eile, ní bhíonn siad fágtha ach le, “Earworm,” ina gcluasa acu agus céimeanna ina gcosa. Agus is dócha más é sin an méid, cén dochar é sin?

West Kerry Live 27 Léargas an Lae le Louise Nic an tSionnaigh le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne – Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar Is breá liom ceoldrámaí. An ceol! An drámaíocht! An aisteoireacht! Éalúchais is eachtra. An scéal, lán le sonas agus le brón – agus de ghnáth, ceacht nó dhó. Nuair a d’oscail gach rud suas arís tamall ó shin, i racht sceitmíní, cheannaíos dhá thicéid do cheithre seó. Agus mise i mo chónaí i gCiarraí. Le leanbh óg. Trí cinn de na seónna siúd tagtha agus imithe agus gan mise a bheith ann. Táim chun an diabhail ceann deireanach a fheiscint slí amháin nó slí eile (“South Pacific,” má tá tú fiosrach. Sean-fhaiseanta ach claisaiceach). Ceoldráma, “Clasaiceach,” eile ná an scannán (agus seó) clúiteach, “Grease.” Tháinig sé amach sna 70idí. Thuill sé timpeall 370m dollar – sna 70idí! – ag oifig na dticéad. Féach timpeall ort agus chífidh tú go bhfuil sochaí éigin nó scoil áitiúil á chur ar an ardán i mbliana – mar a tharlaíonn gach bliain. Agus – an moladh is airde de réir modhanna nua-aimseartha – tá 76% gnóthaithe aige ar an suíomh, “Rotten Tomatoes.” Fós. In ainneoin gach rud. Iontas na n-iontas. Okay, chum deartháireacha na helium – hitmakers ceart – na Bee Gees, na hamhráin. Gan dabht, bhí sé greannúr. Ní féidir a shéanadh ach gur scannán faiseanta, dathúil, fuinniúil a bhí ann. Agus bhí Olivia Newton-John ann, ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam. Scéal brónach a bás an rud a chuir “Grease” i gcuimhne dom.

what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more ef ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynam ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a Takecost.for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of en ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Beloved wife of Denis (Dingo) dear mother of Sean, Sinead & Eamon. Sadly missed by her loving family, grandchildren Jackson, Evan, Kate and Declan, brothers Martin, Bernard & Eamon, sisters Mary, Monica and Elizabeth, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

A special mention goes to Saoirse Brosnan whose skill levels were evident throughout the season and the entire panel were delighted to see her win the West Kerry Schools Skills Final in Dingle followed by claiming 2nd place in the County Skills Final in Tralee in June.

The Annascaul u12 girls L.G.F.A team had an unforgettable start to the 2022 season when they were selected to play at Half time in the Division 2 League Final between Kerry and Armagh in Croke Park. The 12 oldest members of the panel had a chance to show their skills on the hallowed turf and a win against Armagh side Mullaghbrack followed by watching the Kerry ladies claim the Division 2 league trophy ensured a memorable day for all concerned.

Indeed the Croke Park trip buoyed the girls up for the North Kerry League where wins against Finuge-St Senans, Glenflesk, Dingle, and Ballyduff set the girls up for a shield final against Ballyduff again where they came out on top on a score of 5-6 to 3-5. Captains Aoibhin O Callaghan & Orla Curran received the shield on behalf of the panel. Next up was the County League Division 3 where the girls played Austin Stacks, Dr Crokes, Beaufort, Kilcummin, Glenflesk, Knocknagoshel Brosna and Laune Rangers and finished top of Division 3 thus qualifying to play Knocknagoshel Brosna in the County Final. In a tense encounter played at John Mitchell’s grounds in Tralee, it took a tremendous effort from the entire team inspired by captains Saoirse Brosnan & Niamh O'Callaghan to overcome Knocknagoshel Brosna on a final score line of 5-9 to 3-8 to the delight of tremendous Annascaul supporters. The entire panel played their part in the above victories with all girls enjoying game time regularly throughout the season and driving each other on in training and during matches. The Management team of Ger O Callaghan, Paddy Curran and Mairead Clifford deserve credit too for their hard work and commitment to the girls throughout the season.

30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

This Year marks the 60th anniversary since Joe and Agnes Turbett brought their amusements to Dingle for the first time, and they have been coming every year since. Like 99s and the Dingle Races, "The Hurdy Gurdies" as they are called locally, have become a staple feature of every child’s summer in Dingle .

The Turbett family have become intertwined with the history of the town and down through the years have built up strong relationships and friendships which are rekindled every year. One of Joe and Agnes's children was born in the old Dingle hospital with local publicans Paddy Bawn Brosnan and Bob Griffin standing as godparents.

John, Catherine, Dickie, Sabrina, Kathy and Mary and all the Turbett family would like to thank the people of the Dingle Peninsula for their continued support and warm welcome every year and as the hot summer is coming to an end they are looking forward to returning to Dingle again for the 61st year.

Turbett's Amusements

The Turbetts will be packing up as usual at the end of August and heading home to Allenwood, Co. Kildare stopping on the way to catch some late summer festivals throughout the country before the winter sets in. To mark the 60th year celebrations before the family leave West Kerry they will be donating to two local organizations.

Many a young Dingle person has started their working careers spinning waltzers or disentangling bumper cars and they continue to employ people every year to help out for the season. Both Joe and Agnes sadly passed away in recent years, Agnes in 2008 and Joe in 2012 and the family have a special memory of the kindness of the local community during that time.

Turbetts Celebrate 60 Summers in Dingle

Turbett's Amusements would like to invite everyone to come along and join us for an evening of FREE RIDES, FACE PAINTING AND ENTERTAINMENT for all the family on Thursday 25th August from 6 - 8pm (Back open as normal from 8p.m) Hopefully we will see our friends and customers there. Further updates on social media.

Richie Williams RACES. The Dingle Races attracted huge entries and record crowds over the 3 days to Ballintaggart Course which was in excellent condition for Pony Racing. Our congratulations to the hard working volunteers who year after year put so much of their time and effort into organising this important event resulting in a major economic boost to the entire Peninsula. The favourable weather conditions contributed to a most enjoyable few days for visitors, supporters, jockeys, trainers owners and even the bookies seemed reasonably happy too by Sunday Afternoon. The quality of the racing was also of a really competitive standard and commentator extradionaire Thomas O'Callaghan was loud and clear in what he says is his last time on the mic in Ballintaggart.

Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society will host a talk on the work of The Congested District Boards ( 1891- 1923) in Ionad An Bhlascaoid on Sunday August 21st and entry to the Ionad is free on that day.

Dingle GAA would like to thank all who attended, also the Fife and Drum Band, Gardai and stewards who helped make it a memorable occasion for all concerned. Comhgaiordeachas libh go leir.

THE DINGLE MARATHON incorporating both Half and Full races are due on Saturday September 3rd starting from the Pier Car Park at 9.00a.m. Full Details in our next Edition. THE DINGLE FOOD FESTIVAL also returns this year over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday October 1st and 2nd . So plenty to look forward to as the tourist season tapers off these events attract a different category of visitor to our Peninsula. SAFETY. While most of us were heading for some sleep on a misty night recently the Dingle Sea and Cliff Rescue volunteers were heading up Mount Brandon from the Cloghane Side to firstly trace and then comfort and eventually arrange at daybreak to transport a stranded walker for urgent medical attention to the nearest hospital. These volunteers have been involved in an increasing number of urgent callouts this year and certainly deserve our thanks for the wonderful service they provide on 24 hour basis to people who call for help.

REGATTA. The Dingle Regatta returned to the Harbour after the enforced gap due to Covid and what brilliant entertainment was provided over the 2 days with 16 races in total run off in exceptionally quick time. Most of the competitions were eagerly contested with some very close finishes and the exhibition of Naomhóg Racing was a real joy to watch. Here our sincere congratulations especially go to Eddie, Maunza and Karen who dedicate so much of their time and effort to the Dingle Rowing scene. Also to the back up team and parents and competitors whose dedication ensures that Naomhóg Racing is in an increasingly healthy state at present. On to Ventry for their Regatta which starts at 1.30p.m. this Sunday with a great programme of events there as well.

To get the most reward from you barbeque turn the temperature down and think of it as a big slow oven. Order a pork shoulder from your butcher and ask them to butterfly it, this will allow it to cook evenly on the grill. The sweet smoky flavour of the peaches with butter will make you wonder why you don’t have this combination all the time. This also can be cooked in oven at 160ºC Ingredients serves 6-8 2kg pork shoulder, trimmed and butterflied 3 cloves of garlic, crushed handful of rosemary, chopped 1 lemon, zested sea salt and black pepper olive oil 4 large peaches, cut in half and pitted some butter, melted Method Mix the garlic, rosemary and lemon zest and good dash of olive oil in a bowl. Season the pork well with salt and pepper. Rub half of garlic lemon mixture over the pork. Allow this to marinate while the barbeque is coming up to the correct temperature. If you are using charcoal, get it hot and let the coals turn white, you are looking for a medium heat. Place the pork on top and pull down the cover (or use an improvised one). Let this cook nice and slow for about 2 hours, check it every little while to make sure you are not burning it and turn it. If you think it is drying out you can place a small pot of water beside the pork, this will help to create some steam. Check the inside of the pork to make sure it has cooked, brush the remaining garlic mixture over the pork. Move the pork to one side of the barbeque to allow it to rest. Place the peaches on the grill and allow them to take on some colour and soften. Brush them with some butter. Slice the pork and serve with the roast peaches. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Luaitear na caora dearga le dath na tine lasta agus ba sna caora a bhí an chosaint. Chrochtaí an chaorthainn sa tigh chun ná éireodh anamnacha na marbh ón mbás. Chrochtaí i gcró na mbó í chun go gcosnófaí na ba agus go mbeadh an bainne slán don tsamhradh. Chuirtí sa chuigeann í agus an t-im á dheanamh chun ná goidfí ‘brabús’ an bhainne ón dtigh don mbliain dar gcionn. Nósanna iad seo a bhain anmhór le féile na Bealtaine, tréimhse aistrithe na bliana idir an tEarrach agus an Samhradh. Chreidtí go raibh cosaint sa tslat chaorthainn ar an lucht sí. An té a mbeadh a leithéid ina ghlaic, d’fhéadfadh sé dul isteach sa lios agus ní dhéanfaí díobháil ar bith dó. Nós eile a bhain le féile na Bealtaine ná na beithígh a thiomáint idir dhá thine mar go gcreidtí go raibh na beithígh, na barraí agus na tithe go mór i mbaol an tráth sin de bhliain. Cheanglaítí slat chaorthainn le heireabaill na mbó nó bhuailtí na beithígh le slat chaorthainn agus iad á gcur amach sa ghort den gcéad uair. Adhmad ón gcaorthainn a chuirtí sa chéad tine a lastaí sa tigh maidin Lá Bealtaine. Tá mórán tagairtí don gcaorthainn i bhfilíocht agus i bprós na Meánaoiseanna in Éirinn. Molann an file Iubhdan tréithe na gcrann éagsúla. Tugtar ‘fid na ndruad’ nó crann na ndraoithe ar an gcrann caorthainn. Deintear tagairt do chrann caorthainn mór le rá sa scéal Fiannaíochta Tóraíocht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne. Caorthainn Dhubhrois a thugtar air sin. Bhain mórán tréithe leis na caora. Bhíodar folláin mar ábhar bídh agus bhíodh blas na fiona nó blas na meala orthu. Ní bhainfeadh galar ná breoiteacht don té a bhlaisfeadh trí cinn acu. Ba é an Searbhán Lochlannach an té a raibh an dualgas air iad a chosaint ar ghadaíocht. D’Iarr Gráinne na caora dearga ar Dhiarmaid. Mharaigh Diarmaid Ó Duibhne an Searbhán Lochlannach fé dheireadh chun go mbainfeadh sé na caora do Ghráinne a bhí ag súil le leanbh. Tá tagairt eile sna Laoithe Fiannaíochta do Chrann Caorthainn mór le rá – Caorthainn Chluain Fhearta a raibh na tréithe céanna aici. D’éirigh leis an ngaiscíoch Iollan fanacht ina dhúiseacht ar feadh seacht lá déag nuair nach raibh ólta aige ach deoch amháin fíoruisce agus cúig cinn de chaora caorthainn. In iar-Thuaisceart na hÉireann is mó a bhfuil na logainmneacha ina bhfuil an chaorthainn luaite – Achadh Caorthainn, Ailt an Chaorthainn, Ard Caorthainn, Bealach Caorthainn & Corr an Chaorthainn. NOLLAIG NA MBAN Women's Christmas, Nollaig na mBan sometimes called Little Christmas falls on the 12th day of Christmas, 6th. January. In olden times the women took a rest on Nollaig na mBan and the men of the family cooked the meal for the family. In the Christian Calendar this is the Feastday of the Epiphany when the 3 Wise Kings came from the East to Visit the Child Jesus in Bethlehem. 3 candles lighting on a window on that night is a tradition upheld in some homes to this present day, guiding the 3 kings to the Child Jesus.

Seanfhocail na Mumhan le An Seabhac foilsithe ag An Gúm ‘Foilsíodh an chéad eagrán den leabhar seo sa bhliain 1926 faoin teideal ‘Seanfhocail na Muimhneach’. Ba é an Seabhac, Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, a bhailigh na seanfhocail agus a chuir in eagar iad. Cé gur i gCorca Dhuibhne a chuala sé formhór na seanfhocal ar dtús deir sé sa réamhrá gur chuala sé iad níos déanaí ‘i ngach Gaeltacht agus breac-Ghaeltacht idir Bhéal na Leamhna agus Sléibhte an Chumaraigh’. Admhaíonn sé, áfach, nach ndearna sé aon chuardach lastuaidh den tSionainn. Pádraig Ua Maoileoin a d’ullmhaigh an t-eagrán nua seo (2003). Is mór an t-iomlánú ar an leabhar na ceithre chéad seanfhocal breise a chuir Pádraig féin leis an gcnuasach bunaidh.’ - An Gúm An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Breandán Mac Gearailt Aimsir Is dócha nách bhfuil aon áireamh ar a bhfuil do allas curtha dhuit agat istigh agus amuigh le linn an bhrothaill. Bhí fuinneoga oscailte agus dúnta ach fós bhí allas ag sileadh le scata. Dúirt daoine gan fód go leanfadh sé go Márta, ach is baolach gur thug a ngeall cáirde dóibh. Bhí oíche Dé Domhnaigh seo caite spréach bhraonach agus bhí stoirm thóirní agus splancacha treasna na farraige uainn in Uíbh Ráthach. Sea bhí sánas teasa ar an Luan agus raistí báisti. N’fhaca riamh an oiread gluaisteáin parcálta thíos ar thrá Inse agus a bhí tráthnóna Aoine, agus is dócha go rabhdar arís ann ar an Satharn Rud ná cloistear puinn fé ná go bhfuil géarchéim eacnamaíochta ag bagairt ar an Rúis agus d’fhéadfadh tar éis tamaill eile go mbeadh sé fuirist breith ar eirbeall ar Putin. Tá gearchéim tréis scata tíortha a bhualadh agus tá achrainn dícéille ar scata tír. Beidh Olltoghchán san Iodáil go luath. Míshástacht leis na ciorraithe de bharr an chogaidh atá luite go trom ar thíortha eile mar an Fhrainc, an Ollóin, Sasana mar a deirtear go bhfuil an bheirt atá ar na builigh ag iarraidh ceannasaíocht na gCaomhach níos laige ná a réamh theachta. Sin a deir foinsí áirithe i nuachtáin na Breataine nó mar a deirid sa Ríocht Aontaithe. Comhgháirdeas Comhgháirdeas le Louise Nic Thomáis ó Dhún Chaoin a bhuaidh an gradam, An Bhean ba Dhea- fheistithe ag Ráiseanna Capall an Daingin. Bail ó Dhia uirthi. Na Stáit Aontaithe Más fior bhí an ruathar a deineadh ar thigh cónaithe Trump i Meiriceá le fíor dhéanaí, neamh dhleathach. Fiú is má tá, ní bhainfidh san aon bharrthuisle as an FBI. Sin dlí agat. Rud eile ná go bhfuil beartas ag Uachtarán Mheiriceá na billiúin dollaéir a chur ar fáil le cor coise a bhain as an CO2 ata ag éirí as fhoinsí éagsúla sna stáit. Tá sé in am ag cách dúiseacht nó an ann dóibh siúd sna glúinte rómhainn, is baolach. Bás Is mór an trua bás Shiobháin Ní Chíobháin Uí Scanláin, bean álainn a déarfadh aon duine go raibh aithne aige uirthi. Bhi cuid mhaith do dhea -thréithe a mathar aici agus a hathar. Méala mór a bás do Seán agus Carmel, Séamus agus Eibhlín,Tomás agus Elma, Pádraig agus Cáit, Marion agus Liam P Ó Murchú, Nóra Uí Mhurchú, a gaolta agus a cairde uile. Tá a corp curtha i nDún Úrlann. Gur imeasc na bhFiréin a hanam lách. Fuair Clíodhna Cussen ó Bhaile an Chaisleáin Nua i Luimneach agus Bleá Cliath bás le déanaí. Méala mór a bás dá céile Pádraig Ó Snodaigh a seisear mac Feargus, Aongus, Colm, Cormac, Rónán agus Rossa, deirféireacha, Pam, agus Ruth agus deartháracha Bobbí agus John.

Dealbhadóir aitheanta- tá cuid dá saothar ar an gCuas, agus Dún ‘n Óir, agus go leor áiteanna eile. Thuill sí aitheantas idirnáisiúnta mar dhealbhadóir. Chomh maith leis sin bhailigh sí na sean-rannta Gaoluinne agus foilsíodh iad sa chnuasach Trupall Trapall. Bean chneasta, Gaelach cáirdiúil. Imeasc sluaite Dé a hanam gan teimheal. Iománaíocht Chonac an-chluiche iomána ar TG4 ar an nDomhnach seo caite mar a raibh craobh iomána an Chontae i Loch Garman á imirt. Bhuaidh Fearna ar fhoireann Naomh Máirtin le poinnte amháin. Mar a dúirt, an- chluiche a bhí cruaidh glan. Bhreá leat a bheith ag féachaint ortha. Ní raibh mágáine eatortha. Fuair fear poinnte as saor-bhuile 70M ó lar an ghoirt. Buaileadh amach an sliotar isteach na láimh agus bhuail isteach agus ghnóthaigh an dara poinnte. I gcas eile fuair fear ó Fhearna an sliotar agus b’sheo leis fé dhéin an bháide mar shí gaoithe. Bhí trí chamán ag baint raithineach as a chamán ach bhuail sé an sliotar lena bhroig isteach sa chúinne. An t-aon bháide. An mbeidh sé ag imirt chaide do Loch Garman an bhliain seo chugainn? Cúpla Sean –Fhocal Mairg gur beag leis Dia mar lón Is fearr sean fhiacha ná sean-fhala [sean- chúiseanna]. Fuacht sna slinneáin a bhreacann na loirgne. Is don nglóire an ghlaine. Ná caith an t-uisce salach amach go mbeidh an t-uisce glan istigh. Ná nocht d’fhiacla go bhféadfair do ghreim a bhreith. Ní caidreamh go aon tíos. Más ceirteach tú, bí cruinncheirteach.. Ní fearrr a rá ná cuimhneamh air.
