Is there Trouble Brewing in your Favourite Cuppa?

There are various accounts of the origins of coffee, but the most popular is the discovery made by Kaldi, a goat herder in Ethiopia during the 9th century. He noticed his goats dancing from one coffee shrub to another after consuming the red berries, in which the coffee bean is contained. Curiosity took over and Kaldi decided to try out these bitter berries for himself and soon he was as giddy as the goats. A passing monk on witnessing the antics of Kaldi and the goats, decided to pick some for himself and his brothers and sure enough, they were up all night praying and filled with divine inspiration. From these humble beginnings, word spread and coffee is now one of most widely consumed drink in the world. It is second to oil as the most traded commodity in the world.

Many studies claim that drinking one to two cups of coffee per day can protect against cancer, particularly liver and colon cancer. It also offers protection against conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, Type 2 Diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The health benefits are primarily attributed to caffeine which temporarily increases the output of our stress hormones - which, in small amounts, produce positive effects all over the body. Caffeine is a stimulant in coffee which can increase our energy levels and metabolism, improve concentration and alertness as well as increase the rate at which we burn fat (mostly to fuel the extra energy burst). Antioxidants and tannins in coffee also have protective qualities - protecting us from free radical damage which is good for our heart, brain and vascular system.

On closer examination of these studies, the benefits of drinking coffee lie in its “protective” qualities, reducing risk of disease, rather than a curative effect, which treats a specific ailment or disease. Interestingly, coffee can make some existing conditions worse and impair healing. For example, coffee induces contractions in the gallbladder - thereby increasing the flow of bile and aiding the function of the gallbladder - this is good as it protects from gallbladder developing disease. But, when gallstones already exist - these extra contractions can worsen the condition and increase

pain, inflammation and the risk of obstruction in the gallbladder - not so good! The same is true for Type-2 diabetes, much of the studies examine populations of coffee drinkers compared with non-coffee drinkers. Coffee drinkers are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, probably due to high levels of magnesium and chromium in coffee which assist insulin to work more effectively as well as the protective antioxidants in coffee. However, once type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, most of the protective qualities of coffee are negated as the body struggles to benefit from this beverage. Also, many of the other habits linked to drinking coffee, such as adding sugar, smoking and eating sweet foods far outweigh any benefits that coffee may offer. It is important, therefore, to look at these studies a little closer before you order a super-sized cup of latté, hoping to find a cure for diabetes at the end of your mug!

The first commercially-available decaf coffee came from a German merchant in 1906. Ludwig Roselius believed his father (also a coffee merchant) had died from too much caffeine and searched for a way to remove the “poison” from coffee beans. This led to the establishment of Kaffee HAG, a famous (or infamous) brand of decaffeinated coffee which grew popular as a “health” drink during the 1930s in Germany and soon after the war, was widely available throughout Europe. We know from research that caffeine, in moderate amounts, offers protection from neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia because of its positive impact on the neurotransmitters involved in cognitive function, alertness, concentration and memory. But there is the downside - too much coffee over-stimulates these same neurotransmitters leaving us feeling agitated, anxious and jaded. Caffeine affects our sleep patterns, particularly if consumed late in the day, and lousy sleep is a major drain on our physical and mental wellbeing.

Decaf, at first glance, might seem like a good alternative but the processing and chemicals involved in removing the caffeine can be harmful in other ways. Caffeine is removed from the bean by soaking it in a solvent such as carbon dioxide or methylene. Roselius relied on benzene as the solvent of choice back in the 1930s until it was banned because it was discovered to be a human carcinogenic and more recently (1970s), another solvent - trichloroethylene was discontinued due to its carcinogenic properties. If choosing decaf, look for safer methods for decaffeination (without solvents) such as "Swiss water process" which uses activated charcoal or carbon filters to remove the caffeine. These newer methods may add an extra cost to your decaf, but well worth it in the long run, if it is part of your daily routine.

As with all good things in life – moderation is key. Most research shows that the health benefits come with one or two cups of coffee a day, whereas more than five will certainly negatively impact on your health. If you have a pre-existing health condition or on medication find out how caffeine may impact on your illness and your meds. Thankfully, most people can enjoy a cup or two of this glorious brew knowing its great taste, aroma and caffeine offer some goodness and can raise our spirits - just like it did for Kaldi, his goats and the monks!

BUSINESS. We say Goodbye and Thank you to Camila Dinkel and Mike Venner who provided a wonderful service to our town through their initiative in the Dingle Bookshop in Green Street over the past 15 years.

We Welcome the new owners Nuala Cassidy and Martin Bealin to their new business in the Bookshop and wish them both and their families every success with this venture.

Martin and Nuala operated the Global Village Restaurant in Upper Main Street for many years but escalating costs along with staff shortages, changing consumer requirements and family committments forced them to close that business last summer. A huge loss indeed to the area when such a renowned outlet had to cease trading in such circumstances.

MEETING. The Dingle Business Chamber's Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday February 22nd in Benner's Hotel commencing at 7.30p.m. The meeting is open to the public and we would like to hear the views and suggestions of both the business community, employees and residents also on ways to promote and improve our town. We invite new members to take a more active part in the affairs of our town and it is proposed that the work in the year ahead will be done mainly through subcommittees responsable for different promotions end events.

ST PATRICK'S DAY PARADES. Dingle will again play host to the unique situation where not one but two Street Parades take place on St Patrick's Day this year.

The early morning parade by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band commences from Ashmount Terrace at 6a.m. through the traditional route stopping for Mass in St Marys Church before marching back to Ashmount again.

The Floats Parade commences at 12.45p.m. from Ashmount again ably led by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band taking in the main streets in town.

The organisers welcome all business outlets, services, schools, clubs and societies , individuals or groups of any kind to take part but please notify us in advance for administration purposes at 086-8641340.

AWARDS. Congratulations also to the management and staff of Dingle Benner's Hotel who were named as ireland's Top Outlet in the Pub Category at the Hotel and Catering Review Awards recently. Well deserved indeed as both locals and viisitors are always made welcome and at ease as well as being well catered for whatever the purpose of ones visit to the premises.

DINGLE LIBRARY. A mini exhibition titled Tom Crean and the Importance of The Sea is currently on show in Dingle Library up to the end of the month. Foras na Mara/The Marine Institute have complemented the display with activity books on the Ocean and the RV Tom Crean with the Library staff organising competitions for its young visitors.

Well worth a visit especially as the Tom Crean story relates to one of the great unsung heroes of the Peninsula.

PUBLIC REALM. Please keep the entries coming for suitable names or titles for the new Public Realm in Strand Street. A good variety of suggestions received so far but a few weeks left before we forward the entries to the County Council who make the final decisions on such names.

GENO-TYPING RAMS

Many sheep farmers on the peninsula, (and indeed across the county) will have learned for the first time that they are required to have genotyped rams from now onwards, if they wish to participate in the new (under-funded) Sheep Improvement Scheme. Whatever improvements there are in the scheme, they were not in the payment rate to farmers, for the amount of work necessary.

For those unsure what is required, West Kerry Scotch Mountain Sheep Society (WKSMSS) have organised a “Day out” whereby Sheep Ireland will attend the local mart and carry out the genotyping of any rams presented on the day. This will take place on Thursday 23rd February.

As we all know, it is now a condition for the SIS to have all rams genotyped, of there will be penalties to the scheme payment. This service is free, but only to WKSMSS members, so this is a carrot and stick approach. There is never anything wrong with participation in a breed society, and this is one of the many benefits of doing so.

Any farmers interested in this, need to have all rams tagged prior and they must be booked in through Dingle mart on or before Monday 20th February 2023. On the day, aged rams will be genotyped free-of-charge, while any yearling rams will incur a €15 charge. But remember, this is one of the conditions for participation in the scheme.

INHFA – FORESTRY POLICY

Other local societal news, brings us to the Irish Natura & Hill Society. This organisation recently established a Dingle/West Kerry branch and have been active in recent weeks. Forestry is a serious issue, especially in West Kerry where growing conditions can be a concern to allocation of plantation grants.

It is the assertation of the INHFA that previous forestry policies did not work to their full potential, and their wording is much stronger than that. But whatever the short-comings, there must be a coherent policy that provides a feasible and practical policy with aims and goals achievable, and with economic benefits to both the individual farmer and the economy at large. It must not just be a money-in-the pocket-of-individuals. Any forest plantation planted must have the potential of achieve full vegetative and financial maturity, which is capable of providing employment and then stability in the community.

One of the main concerns of the Association is the continued promotion of Sitka Spruce plantations (a non-native spp) on peatlands, and the associated damage to water quality, and bio-diverse natura land. They want to see the development of sustainable, farmercentred forestry enterprises that deliver good economic returns, environmental enhancement, viable farm diversification, rural tourism opportunities and a more

vibrant rural community. It looks like the farming community and lobbyists and the environmental/ green lobby, as well as DAFM and the Forestry Services need to get around the table and start talking.

HILL BURNING POLICY

There has been much discussion around the legality of burning hills in the past weeks. The situation at present, and until further notice and a change in the law is that farmers are allowed burn excess growing vegetation on hills, commonage, etc. If this was not allowed and more importantly carried out, these hill regions would become overgrown and we would be faced with the scenario experienced in regions such as Spain& Portugal, California, Eastern Australia and Chile. Forest fires are both very damaging the environment and dangerous to human health with injury and death always a consequence.

However, any farmer involved in burning fires must abide by the rules, or they and those others sharing their common-space will be penalised. Ignorance is not a defence. You must familiarise yourself with the law.

Notify the Fire service (and Gardai) of your intention to burn and estimated finishing time. Do not burn between 1st March and 31st August, (“Big Brother” is watching) and always have sufficient personnel on hand to control the burn. If you have to ask, you don’t have enough bodies. And finally, if you are going to burn, be careful.

SHEEP CENSUS

Unfortunately, there are some people who still haven’t submitted their Sheep Census for 2022. If you are one, do so now. You may be late, but there are deadlines and there are deadlines. It will still be time to get it and accounted for. Some people just say that they’re late and leave it. Don’t. Post it today.

West Kerry Whiskey Tasting Peter White

For the first Irish Whiskey Society Dingle tasting of 2023, Daniel O'Connor, brewer at West Kerry Brewery has just returned from Australia where he sourced some of their best whiskey to bring home and present to us on Friday March 3rd from 7.30pm at Tig Bhric West Kerry Brewery, Ballyferriter.

There are some award winning newish distilleries down under who produce some excellent whiskey and this will be a unique opportunity to see what they are up to.

Having been to Westward distillery myself and tasted some fine Australian malt, I can state that this will be a very interesting evening. Australian distilleries tend to use their own wine barrels in which to mature their spirit as it is too expensive to have them shipped to the continent meaning that they have some very unique whiskey over there.

There will be the usual bus to and from Ballyferriter leaving John Benny's pub at 6.45 pm and we intend to spend an hour or so after the tasting to enjoy the hospitality in Tig Bhric. Community Recognition Fund 2023 – Expression of Interest at https:// www.kerrycoco.ie/

The Department of Rural & Community Development has announced details of a €50 million fund to support the development of community infrastructure and facilities in recognition of the contribution of communities in hosting new arrivals in the county in response to the Ukraine crisis. This fund has been allocated to Local Authorities based on the numbers of new arrivals located there. Kerry County Council has received an allocation of €4,403,073.

The majority of the available funding will be distributed through a Public Call for Eligible Projects over two specific funding measures:

Measure 1: A fund of approximately €3.3 million will be distributed among Communities, Towns and Villages hosting new arrivals to fund transformative capital projects of scale that will revitalise and enhance the economic and social environment of these areas.

As set out in the Scheme Outline, proposals under this category “must

demonstrate that the funding is targeted at, and specifically invested in, those communities, villages and towns where the highest levels of new arrivals are located and where there is a clear need for investment identified.”

Measure 2: A Fund of up to €400,000 will be allocated for small to medium scale capital projects “that will deliver tangible benefits for communities” up to a maximum value of €40,000 per eligible project which are proposed by community groups, cultural organisations, sporting clubs etc. across the county.

From the 1911 Census in West Kerry

Ted Creedon

The 1911 Census of Ireland was taken on Sunday, April 2. In this issue we’re going to look at Young People at Work in West Kerry, from Camp to the Blasket Islands, at that time. While there were no teenagers in 1911 most of the following are in that category as we know it today. There are some real surprises among them.

Long.

John Long lived in Gaol Street (Goat Street) with his parents Richard, 46, and Margaret, 44. Richard was an R.I.C. constable and was also a Census enumerator so it must have been genuine when he recorded his 15 yearold son John as a ‘School Teacher’?

O’Sullivan

Mary O’Sullivan, 18, lived in John Street and her occupation was ‘School Monitress’ – an assistant to a teacher. Her brothers John, 20, and Maurice, 15, were farriers and blacksmiths. (Maybe John Long, above, was a school monitor).

O’Donnell

Three O’Donnell sisters, Mary, 18, Nora, 17, and Catherine, 15, lived in Ballyglasheen, Ballinvoher, and all three were ‘Spinsters’. Obviously they were not ‘Old Maids’ but they worked as wool spinners. Their mother Johanna was also a ‘Spinster’.

Parker

James Parker, 16, was a ‘Servant’ on the farm of Michael McDonnell, aged 57, at Kilnaglearagh, Dingle, - or Lough farm.

Somers

Eusebius Somers, 19, lived in Castlegregory where he was a ‘Telegraph Messenger’. Never came across that Christian name before but he was probably named after Eusebius, the Greek historian of Christianity who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries. He died around 340 AD and is entombed in the catacombs in Rome.

Walsh

Hannie Walsh, 11, is the youngest person in this collection of young workers in 1911. She was a ‘Servant’ in the home of farmer Patrick O’Connor, 31, and his wife Hanoria, 31, in Faha, Cloghane.

Flaherty

Ellen Flaherty, 18, lived in Quay Street and she was a ‘Servant’ in widow Margaret Houlihan’s drapery shop. Ellen is recorded as having been born in Clogher, Ballyferriter.

Edwards

William Edwards, 17, is one of the more intriguing young people in this grouping and we met him before under the heading of ‘Unusual Occupations’. He lived in Castlegregory with his mother, Catherine, 49, and his sister Sarah, 14.

William’s occupation was ‘Gun-Smith’. How did a 17 year-old become a gunsmith and was that a full-time occupation in Castlegregory and West Kerry in 1911? What did his work involve? Did he make guns, service and repair them, check them for accuracy - all of the foregoing?

There was a gunmaker named William Edwards working in Dublin between the years 1776 – 1798. Also, there’s a reference to gunmaker William Edwards in the Journal of Arms and Armour Society, 1957.

Is there a family connection there? Does anyone in Castlegregory have a story about this young ‘Gun-Smith’?

Johnson

Richard Johnson, 15, lived in Ballinvownig, Dingle, and he was a ‘Telegraph Messenger’. We’ll meet his family again under a different heading.

Ní Cinnéide.

Eibhlís, 19, and Nóra, 17, Ní Cinnéide were the only occupants of a house in Ballyferriter and their occupations were recorded as ‘Bean Tabhairne’ – Publican.

Mac Dómhnaill.

Pádraig Mac Dómhnaill lived in Emlagh (Kilmalkedar) where he was head of the household at age 16. He was a ‘farmer’s son’ but there is no record of parents. He shared the house with his brothers Liam, 14, and Joseph, 9.

Moynihan

Mary Moynihan, aged 14, was the head of the household in her home in Doonore North, Kilgobban. She recorded her occupation as ‘Farmer’. No record of parents on the census form. She shared her home with four younger siblings, a relative and a farm servant.

Kevane

Patrick Kevane, 16, lived in Ballinleague, Ventry, and his occupation was ‘Shoemaker’.

Byrnes

Mary Byrnes lived in a house on The Mall with her brother Thomas , 21, and her nephew Thomas, 4. We don’t know if she had an occupation but she’s included here because at age 19 she was recorded as a ‘Widow’. Day.

James Day, 17, was a ‘Shepherd’ in the townland of Kilteenbane, Kilgobban.

Ted is the First Bard of Brandon

The winner of the first Bard of Brandon comic verse competition was Ted Creedon from Dingle.

The organisers,Tom Horgan and his wife Gabrielle Nic Reamoinn, were surprised by the volume of entries which were whittled down by a panel of judges to fifteen finalists.

Submissions came from throughout Ireland as well as from Australia and Canada.

Ted Creedon's entry 'The Kingdom's First Food Fair' was announced as the winner at a reading of all finalists' entries, to an appreciative audience in Halla le Cheile, Brandon, last week.

The poem is an amusing account of a food fair held in Listowel and along with the title of Bard of Brandon it secured a prize of €150..

They say Listowel is famed for ceol and literary flair, But others claim it owes its fame

To the Kingdom’s first Food Fair, When thirsty men from Scartaglin brought turkeys in a jeep, And turnips damp came up from Camp and made a mighty heap.

From Annascaul, a tidy haul of trout from Coumduff Lake, And from Dunloe and Templenoe the best of Kerry steak. The old windmill in Blennerville sent flour pulverized, From Knockanure came butter pure and cabbages kingsized.

From Maharees came peas and cheese and mussels from Cromane, Fresh mackerel from Watervillepink salmon from the Laune. A horse and trap came from Molls Gap with rabbits by the score, And Garda cars with chocolate bars were dispatched from Rathmore.

The best wildfowl from Baile na nGall, tomatoes from Causeway, A JCB from Portmagee with prawns from Dingle Bay. Then from Firies came strawberries, choice oysters from Cloghane, Hot air balloons, filled with mushrooms, came floating from Moyvane,

From Shannon’s banks, in big bulk tanks, colcannon by the load, And up from Sneem came churns of cream and milk from down the road. Young Brandon lambs and Tarbert jams and pheasant from Asdee, And sixteen rigs of squealing pigs came racing from Tralee,

From Castlemaine a wagon train brought peppers green and red, From Castlecove a baker drove a schoolbus stuffed with bread. Sweetcakes and pies from Ballyheigue and hot Killorglin stew, A dozen trucks with geese and ducks came screeching from Ratoo.

A fleet of ships with French fried chips sailed in from Abbeyfeale, Fresh carrageen from Cahirciveen, and Ballybunion veal.

Killarney stags came stacked in bags –Sea salt from Banna Beach, And currach men came from Dunquin with fifty lobsters each.

From waters clear near Fenit pier came herrings by the box, And forty kegs of gannet’s eggs found on the Skellig Rocks. Oilean Chiarrai sent CIE with chickens plucked and lean, And from The Stacks, by secret tracks, a tanker of poteen,

A hundred cooks came up from Dooks and soon the feast began, And from Lixnaw, attired in straw, there came a mighty Wran, Sliabh Luachra sets in jumbo jets flew in from Farranfore, Musicians rare came from Kenmare and Siamsa with folklore.

Listowel was proud of the massive crowds that filled up square and street, The food was great and the people ate for a famous solid week.

Then came the call from the Castle wall, ’twas greeted with a cheer, The town’s Lord Mayor cried ‘This Food Fair will happen every year!’

We've all seen the amount of plastic and other rubbish that washes up on our shores, and in the seaside town of Castlegregory we are noticing increasing amounts of waste. The volume of disregarded fishing nets, bin bags, and other waste that we find wedged into the sand is incredibly disheartening. At Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, a small secondary school that values firsthand experiences, many classes are taken outside to immerse the students in the world that they are learning about.

This inspired members of the 2023 Transition Year class to enter the Young Environmentalists Awards competition with a focus on marine conservation. They began by creating posters of relevant information and putting them up around the school in hopes of educating other students and staff members the importance of plastic pollution and its effects on the local wildlife. They soon decided that while educating their peers was important, there was a much wider audience that was being neglected. They created social media pages under the name of MSLT Habitat Heroes and also began to create a documentary titled 'Ocean Eye'. They recorded numerous beach cleans and shared their online following. However, they realised that they were not sharing any information that couldn't be found by a simple Google search.

With the aid of the Transition Year coordinator and other teachers, they conducted interviews with local experts. The interviewees included Huw Roberts, a member of the Maharees Coastal Conservation Association, Dr Katie O'Dwyer, a lecturer in Aquatic Ecology at Atlantic Technological University, and Louise Overy, a wildlife biologist and member of the Angel Shark Project. They each spoke on their area of expertise and provided new information and insight to the project's problems.

After the creation of their social media pages and releasing their short documentary on YouTube, they concluded that there was one more demographic that they had yet to reach. They created a children's book to aid teachers and parents in helping young children to foster sustainable habits. They created as simple story with colourful illustrations to convey the main message of the project and offer simple solutions.

The latest action the Habitat Heroes have taken is writing to local politicians and asking them to take the steps to enforce changes that will have a long-lasting impact on our environment. While it is still important that we all do our part, those in government have the power to facilitate the most change and it is important that we encourage them to do so.

The Habitat Heroes adopted the motto "little and often" to demonstrate the impact that frequent small actions can have. While of course the biggest changes will have the biggest impact, simple things such as picking up a piece of rubbish while on a walk or turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can create a sizable impact when done consistently. The current focus of the Habitat Heroes is to continue spreading awareness. The biggest difference can be made if we all work together.

Notes of a Ukrainian in Ireland. Why Ireland?

Week by week we live our lives in Ireland. For many of us, this is the first experience of being abroad, the first time we have seen the ocean and the first experience of living on an island. Many things have happened for the first time and it is complicated.

For almost a year, our life has been divided into "before" and "after" the war. The invasion our country struck deep into the hearts of all Ukranians. They invading force came to crush us.

Despair replaced rage. To survive and to win is what we must do. To be on the front line, to support the rear, to help from abroad and our own abroad, to be heard and simply alive... The goal is the same and the paths are different. We live our lives and try to pass the test in our best way, in which we are beautiful at heart, charitable, grateful and human. Ukraine is seen and heard through us. We are perceived through our achievements in science, sports, diplomacy, art, and most of all, through our daily lives. How we behave in everyday life, how we overcome obstacles, how we adapt to new realities - everything forms an impression about Ukraine. Because for the world we are a brave and indomitable nation. Therefore, the world has high demands and expectations for us. And therefore the price of disappointment is too high. Everyone is responsible, and it is never easy.

Having chosen the path to leave the country, we were not always fully aware of which country would become our refuge. The first priority was to get out of danger and save lives. For Ukrainians there was simply not enough strength or energy left for thinking. And many of us, having just crossed the border, asked ourselves the question "Where should I go next?". For some people, it was just a random thought. Sometimes there were only a few minutes to make a fateful decision.

Therefore, it is not surprising that perhaps the most common question we hear is "How did you choose Ireland for yourself?".

In the first months of the war, most Ukrainians relied on chance and had only their intuition as an advisor. Either they were found by volunteers who brought aid from Ireland in buses and had free seats on the way back. Volunteers sometimes simply approached Ukrainians at the border with Poland and offered to take them to a safe country. Or people were taken from overcrowded reception and accommodation centres for refugees.

Whether it was acquaintances of acquaintances who worked and lived in Ireland for some time, they told their relatives that Ukrainians would be meet in Ireland like at home, because the history of the countries is somewhat similar and the Irish deeply understand and support us. Others chose Ireland because it is very far from the border with Russia. For others, Ireland has always been an unattainable dream, and they could not ignore the chance to find themselves in the dream republic. For some, the main factor was the English language or the climate. And some even had time to consider the prospects of study and employment and made a conscious choice.

But most often we chose Ireland, because of the safe way of arrival and the transparency of the paperwork. The incredible organization and humanity of the reception of refugees was reassuring even at the stage of choosing a country of refuge. And it was peace that was incredibly difficult for us to restore. And that is exactly what Ireland and its people gave us.

For this we are infinitely grateful every day and will always be grateful!

Тиждень за тижнем ми проживаємо наше життя в Ірландії. Для багатьох з нас, це перший досвід перебування за кордоном, вперше побачений океан та перший досвід життя на острові. Багато що відбувається вперше і це складно.

Майже рік як наше життя розділила війна проти України на "до" та "після". Віроломність сусідів вразила в саме серце. Нас прийшли вбити та знищити. Більше не існувало жодних "але".

Відчай замінила лють. Вижити та перемогти - це те, що ми маємо зробити. Бути на передовій, забезпечувати тил, допомогати з-за кордону та своїм за кордоном, бути почутими та просто живими... Мета одна та шляхи різні. Ми живемо наше життя і намагаємось проходити випробування у наш найкращий спосіб, в якому ми прекрасні серцем, доброчинні, вдячні та людяні. Через нас бачать та чують Україну. Нас сприймають через наші досягнення в науці, спорті, дипломатії, мистецтві та найбільше, через наше щоденне життя. Те, як ми поводимось в буденному житті, як ми долаємо перешкоди, як пристосовуємося до нових реалій - все формує враження про Україну. Бо для світу ми єдина хоробра та незламна Нація. Тому до нас Світ має високі вимоги та сподівання. І тому ціна розчарування завелика. Кожен несе відповідальність, а це ніколи не буває просто.

Обравши шлях виїхати з країни, ми не завжди достеменно усвідомлювали, яка країна стане нам прихистком. Важливо було виїхати з небезпеки та зберігти життя. На роздуми просто не лишалось ні фізичних сил, ні енергії. І багато хто з нас, лише перетнувши кордон, вперше поставив собі запитання "Куди далі?". Для багатьох з нас, саме випадок обрав країну. На прийняття доленосного рішення інколи було лише кілька хвилин.

Тому не дивно, що мабуть найчастіше запитання, яке ми чуємо "Як ви обрали Ірландію для себе?".

В перші місяці війни, більшість українців покладались на випадок та за радника мали лише свою інтуїцію. Чи то були знайдені волонтерами, які привезли допомогу з Ірландії автобусами та мали місця на зворотньому шляху. Волонтери інколи просто підходили до українців на кордоні з Польщею та пропонували відвезти до безпечної країни. Або забирали людей з перевантажених пунктів прийому та розміщення біженців.

Чи то знайомі знайомих, що працювали та проживали в Ірландії деякий час, передавали своїм, що в Ірландії зустрінуть українців, як рідних, бо історія країн в чомусь подібна та ірландці глибко розуміють та підтримують нас.

Інші обирали Ірландію, бо вона дуже далеко від кордону з ворогом. Для інших, Ірландія завжди була недосяжною мрією, і вони не могли знехтувати шанс опинитись в омріяній державі.

Для когось основним чинником стала англійська мова або клімат. А дехто навіть встиг розглянути перспективи навчання та працевлаштування і зробив усвідомлений вибір.

Але найчастіше ми обирали Ірландію, через безпечний шлях прибуття та прозорість оформлення документів. Неймовірна організація та людяність прийому біженців заспокоювала навіть на етапі вибору країни прихистку. І саме спокій, це те що нам було неймовірно складно відновити. І саме це нам подарувала Ірландія та її люди.

За це ми безмежно вдячні кожного дня і будемо вдячні завжди!

South Kerry Jobs Fair in Killarney this March

Following on the tremendous success of last year’s South Kerry Jobs Fair, plans are at an advanced stage for this year’s event which will take place on March 2nd at the Great Southern in Killarney. More than 800 people attended the event last year while there were 50 exhibitors with almost 1,000 jobs available. The event is being organised by South Kerry Development Partnership in conjunction with the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce.

SKDP’s Enterprise Office Joanne Griffin said that this year’s event promises to be even bigger given the demand for staff across all sectors of the economy in South Kerry. “To date many of last year’s exhibitors have indicated they will again attend the event and there are also enquiries from other companies and organisations with positions available” Joanne said.

“We expect there will be a strong interest in the event from many of those who have recently taken up residence in the county and we will be working to facilitate them to attend the event” Joanne added Jobs will be available in all sectors she noted pointing out that in addition to the hotel sector, last year’s event featured companies from the engineering, finance, retail and marketing sectors.

Know Your Rights: Rent-

In the current housing crisis, people are encouraged to consider letting out rooms in their houses, where they have capacity. The Rent-A-Room Relief scheme aims to incentivise householders to consider this option. The following are some common questions in relation

• You are an employee or office-holder in a company, and the company pays you to allow clients to use the room in your home on an occasional basis

• You are renting the room to short-term guests, for example, through an online accommodation booking site How would Rental income impact on social welfare payments?

is not self-contained, you are not covered by landlord and tenant legislation, so the rights and obligations under that legislation do not apply to you. However, if you are renting to a HAP tenant the accommodation must meet minimum standards.

This also means that private tenants living in your home are living under a licensee agreement, not a tenancy agreement, and are really only entitled to reasonable notice if you choose to terminate the agreement.

What is rent-a-room relief?

The rent-a-room relief lets you earn up to €14,000 per year tax-free if you rent out a room (or rooms) in your home to private tenants. A self-contained unit, such as a basement flat or a converted garage attached to your home, can qualify for this relief.

While renting out a room that is part of your home is not covered by landlord and tenant law, renting out a self-contained unit is covered. Depending on their circumstances, your tenant(s) may qualify for the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). In certain circumstances, a tenant can claim Rent Supplement.

What are the qualifying conditions for the scheme?

For you to qualify for rent-a room relief, your home must be located in the State and you must occupy it as your sole residence during the year of assessment. This means that it is your home for the greater part of the year and is where people would normally expect to make contact with you. In most cases, you do not have to own the property – you could be a tenant and be subletting to someone else. (In these cases, you should check with your landlord that sub-letting is allowed) However, if you are renting to a HAP tenant you must own the property and provide proof of ownership.

Currently, the total (gross) rent that you get, which includes any money that the tenant pays for food, utilities, laundry or similar goods and services, cannot exceed €14,000 in the tax year (1 January to 31 December)

You cannot deduct expenses from your rental income while claiming rent-a-room relief.

If you qualify for rent-a-room relief, the income you get from renting out the room will be exempt from PRSI, the Universal Social Charge or income tax. However, it must be included on your annual income tax return.

What are the exclusions from rent-a-room relief?

You will not qualify for the relief if:

• Your gross income from rent and related services is over €14,000. In this case, Revenue will treat the full rental income minus allowable expenses as part of your total income for tax purposes and this should be included in your tax return.

• You are renting the room in your home to your civil partner, son or daughter (but there is no restriction in the case of other family members)

If you are getting a means-tested weekly social assistance payment, Supplementary Welfare Allowance or Working Family Payment from the Department of Social Protection, you can get up to €269.23 a week (€14,000 per year) for renting out a room in your own home without it affecting your social welfare payment. You should check if renting a room in your home will affect any other payments you are getting such as Fuel Allowance. This does not apply to short-term lettings (of less than 28 consecutive days). It also does not apply if you are renting a room to your employee or to an immediate family member.

If I avail of the scheme, do I have to register with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB)?

If you rent out a self-contained unit in your home, such as a converted garage attached to your home or a basement flat, the rights and obligations under residential tenancies legislation apply to you. For example, you are obliged to register the tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), provide a rent book to the tenant and ensure that the accommodation provided meets minimum physical standards.

Residential tenancies legislation provides for security of tenure for tenants. These provisions are in Part 4 of the Residential Tenancies Act 2004. Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh 2023, who’s events kick off tonight, are quietly honouring their great friend Séamus Begley, the musician and singer from Baile na bPoc who died recently. Séamus was a great supporter of the festival and this year, the 250 pupils who have registered for the classes will learn a polca written by Séamus, Polca Mhéabh. The guided walk on Saturday, meeting at Cuas pier at 1:45pm will also feature a tribute to Séamus. And on Saturday night his family and close friends will take to the stage at the concert in Feothanach showcasing the wonderful legacy he has left behind in his musical family.

Baile an Fheirtéaraigh is definitely the place to be for music lovers this week as crowds from all parts of Ireland and beyond make their way to the west Kerry village for the annual music event. Crowds are expected to be higher than ever this year with demand for places in classes surpassing all previous records. Most classes are sold out, but there are a couple of places left in some classes. People are advised to check the website, they might be lucky.

In the Blasket Island Centre on Thursday three performers from Estonia, Karoliina Kreintaal, Lee Taul and Kairi Leivo take to the stage, sharing the stories and songs of the island of Ruhnu, an island evacuated during the second world war. On Friday and Saturday in Halla na Feothanaí there will be two fantastic nights of music – Friday night, presented by Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, features Belfast fiddler Dónal O’Connor, Colm Murphy, Doireann Ní Ghlacáin, Edel Fox, Caoimín Ó Fearghail, Liam Mac Congáil and Cárthach Mac Craith. Along with the Ó Beaglaoich family, Saturday night features Seamas Hyland, Clíodhna Costello, local young singer Caoimhe Ní Chíobháin, Andrea Palandri, Séamus & Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta and from Scotland Jamie MacDonald and Kathleen MacInnes.

A screening of a film ‘Tonnta Farraigí Vigo’ takes place in the Blasket Island centre at 4pm on Saturday followed by a performance by Liam Ó Maonlaí and Katerina Garcia. Visting performers from Scotland will give a free recital in Tig Bhric on Friday at 4pm and there are plenty of workshops and dance classes on Saturday to keep everyone busy. Local teenagers and young musicians and singers visiting from the Gaeltachts of Cois Fharraige, Gaoth Dóir and Cill na Martra will perform alsongside our neighbours from Ukraine in Ceann Sibéal Hotel on Thuesday at 4:30pm. Coconut Chicken and Rice Casserole

Ingredients oil

8 chicken thighs

1 onion, finely diced

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

1 inch of ginger, peeled and diced

1 lemongrass, stalk removed and centre part diced

3 spring onions, sliced

300g basmati rice, rinsed

400ml chicken stock

1 can of coconut milk (use the full fat)

handful of coriander, chopped salt and pepper

Method

An easy one pot, fragrant and full of flavour.

There is something so special when onions, garlic, ginger and lemongrass are cooked slowly. The onions and garlic soften and become sweeter, the ginger gives a little bite but then the light citrusy aromas and flavours of lemongrass really round off any dish that they are used in. Any recipe that you put these ingredients together you know that coconut milk will more than likely to play a role too. In this case the chicken will take on the flavours of the coconut while the rice will act like a sponge to soak everything in the pot.

Serves 4

Heat the oven to 180C. Heat a casserole pot over medium heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Once the pot is hot, add a little oil then add half of the chicken pieces, allow them to brown on both sides. Remove the brown chicken pieces and repeat with the other half. Once all of the chicken has browned transfer them to a plate. Turn down the heat and add a little butter and add the onions, garlic, ginger and lemongrass. Let this all cook for about 5 minutes. Add in the rice and stir well. Add the stock, coconut milk and spring onions, again stir everything well. Place the chicken pieces on top of the rice and vegetables. Cover the pot with a lid and place in the oven for about 30-35 minutes. Remove from the oven and check that the chicken and rice are cooked. Add some chopped coriander and a squeeze of lime juice to serve.

Last week Hazel Blennerhassett, Dingle Hub and Jamas Greany, Skyscraper & Dingle Hub, visited Meanscoil Nua An Leith Triuigh in Castlegregory.

We met some students entering The Young Environmentalist Awards Competition who are proactive about climate justice and all things environmental.

Hosted by their teacher Karen Blennerhassett we were introduced to four fantastic projects; Group 1 are The Habitat Heroes and they are passionate about keeping our marine habitats clean and safe for the wildlife that live there as well as spreading awareness about the challenges faced. Group 2 are The Eco Empire and they have fund raised for a polytunnel and are working to improve awareness around growing your own vegetables, creating a green space and adding an outdoor classroom

Slán Leat Nadine! Nadine, our Financial Administrator, is leaving the Hub after two and a half years.

Nadine has been a wonderful addition to the team, adding much needed order to some of our systems as well as volunteering at all Hub events. Her interest in people, languages and a plant based diet have led to some great discussions in our canteen.

I doubt Nadine will stay away from her much loved Dingle for too long. She is leaving with a love of the Irish language and culture. We wish her all the best in her new position at Peace Women Across the Globe.

Group 3 are Petal Works and they are creating paint from organic materials such as eggs and coffee grinds. The product was beautifully presented and inspiring in its sustainability and simplicity.

Group 4 are The Eco Rising and they have made a raised bed from waste materials. They intend to grow vegetables organically. Castlegregoey has a long history with vegetable growing. It was heartening to see interest and tradition continued.

Dingle Hub will be keeping a close eye on these projects and we cannot wait to see what happens next.

Turas fada ar thraein a bhí ann, ach cinnte b’fhiú é toisc na tionscnaimh iontacha a bhí le feiscint. Eagraíodh an turas seo chun spreagadh a thabhairt do scoláirí na hIdirbhliana atá ag tabhairt faoin gcomórtas an bhliain seo chugainn. Bhí an-chuid dos na tionscnaimh bunaithe ar athrú aeráide agus conas fadhbanna bainteach leis a réiteach. Bhí taispeántais shuimiúla ag comhlachtaí agus ollscoileanna ann dos na daltaí, agus bhí seóanna suimiúla le feiscint gach uair nó dhó. Junk Kouture

Tá comórtas Junk Kouture ag teacht suas go luath agus tá obair na gcapall déanta ag roinnt daltaí agus iad ag ullamhú cultacha álainne do. Tá sé ghrúpa chun aghaidh a thabhairt ar an gcomórtas seo. Bhí orthu culaith a dhéanamh as earraí athchúrsáilte agus próifíl a chruthú dóibh féin. Táimid ag súil go mór len iad a fheiscint ar an ardán taispéana! Sacar na gCailíní

Ar an 26ú Feabhra bhí an chéad cluiche sacair ag na cailíní sinseareacha. Is é an chéad foireann sacair a bhí ag an scoil riamh. Cluiche den scoth a bhí ann a chríochnaigh 3-3.

Comórtais Trastíre

Bhí Comórtas Trastíre ar siúl i gCill Áirne ar an gcéad lá do Mhí Feabhra. Bhain daltaí na scoile an-thaitneamh as agus d’éirigh go han-mhaith leo. Bhí Tiernan Ó Loinsigh go hiontach agus anois tá sé imithe ar aghaidh go Craobh na Mumhan.

Ar an 31ú Eanair chuaigh daltaí an cúigiú bhliain ar an turas fada go Bleá Chliath, chun páirt a ghlacadh i Craobh Scléip. Tar éis cúpla mí fada do chleachtadh, bhí seans anois acu chun a scileannrince a léiriú

Dingle Community Games will be running an Art competition on Thursday 23rd February in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne from 3.30p.m. until 6.30 pm.

We are inviting participants in the following age categories:

• Under 8/Over 6

• Under 10/Over 8

• Under 12/Over 10

• Under 14/Over 12

• Under 16/Over 14

Students have the choice of doing either a Painting, Drawing, Collage or Cartoon.

Materials will be provided on the evening.

Handwriting Competition

DRAMA All roads lead to Camp this weekend to see Camp Drama's most recent production "The Blow In" an exhilarating and wonderfully written play by local playwright Val Sweeney. Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Camp u/13 girls Niamh O Callaghan, Meabh Kennedy and Aoibhinn O'Callaghan recently involved with the Kerry girls who gave a great account of themselves despite losing 2-0 to Cork in an interleague game down in Mayfield. ANNASCAUL PARISH

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

As we lovingly remember Mary Murphy on her first anniversary, her husband Paddy, son Jerry, daughters Karen and Colleen, daughter in law Kristine, son in law Alan and her granddaughters Ciara and Niamh, would like to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with us on our very sad loss.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to our extended families in particular Mary’s sisters Chrissie, Peggy and Eileen, her brother’s James and Patsy, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins who were a significant support to us at the time of Mary’s passing.

To our neighbours and very good friends who gathered around us at the time and continue to support us, we are truly grateful.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who wrote messages of sympathy on RIP.ie, who sent mass cards, letters of condolences, phoned and texted us on hearing of her passing. Your thoughtfulness was very much appreciated.

We would like to thank everyone who travelled long distances to be with us in our home, attended the removal, the funeral service, provided guard of honour, gathered at the churchyard and at the graveside.

We wish to convey our sincere gratitude to Dr. Patricia Sheehan and her team, the community of public health nurses, the staff at Castlegregory medical centre, the Village Pharmacy, Bons Secours Hospital Tralee, Bons Secours Hospital Cork and the staff in UHK.

Many thanks to Fr Eamon Mulvihill, for respectfully receiving the remains and celebrating the funeral mass. Thanks to all who contributed to the singing, music and participated during the funeral mass and the month’s mind mass. Thanks to Donal O’ Connor and the grave attendants. As it would not be possible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude and appreciation.

SENIORS: Mid Kerry Senior Football League (round 1): Cromane 2-2, Glenbeigh-Glencar 1-16

The Cromane seniors started their 2023 season with their first outing in the Mid Kerry League in Glenbeigh last Sunday afternoon.

A decent first half - after which the sides were level at the break (2-2 to 0-8) - was undone by a lopsided second half as the home side dominated proceedings.

Highlights included senior debuts for Tony Duffy (who ended the day with 1-1); Liam O’Neill, Joshua O’Sullivan, and Darragh Crosby.

Our second goal came from Danny Shea who finished off a fine move to the net. Sean O’Sullivan with a free rounded out our scoring for the day. The more experienced home side were well in control in the second half as they hit 1-8 without a reply.

MINI MAROONS: Our Mini Maroons, the club’s underage coaching initiative, has returned for boys and girls born in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Our third session of the year was held last Sunday.

Here are our remaining Mini Maroons dates for 2023:

The Minis take place from 11.15am to 12 noon on each Sunday at the Glenbeigh Sports Hall. It’s all fun and games.

Roadworks in the Village : The laying of the pavements is being done currently in the village and is coming along nicely. The village is open for business so please support local. You may need to park a little away from your "usual drop down point" and walk while these works are occurring. Did we say "Please support local when you can."

Annascaul Historical Society (AHS ) had a great turn out on the St Brigit holiday weekend. They spoke of the creamery in the village at the end of the 1890 into 20th century. References to how the GAA Paddy Kennedy Memorial Park and how the funding that came from a priest winning the pools and the contribution of funds for such a purposes. Later spoke of Flahives shop and the creamery in Ballyandreen and then onto the graveyard at Ballinvoher.

All of these walks that the AHS do have been contributing to our sense of local history. We look forward to the laying of the paving stones and the plaques that will provide a commemorative history of houses in the village late in Spring

Connecting the Community

Margaret Kennedys next project is to photo people in Annascaul in their local setting or studio. This will be inclusive of everybody in the village and the surroundings. It will give a good insight into local community life in Annascaul . Margaret's is very friendly and approachable and easily puts people at ease in front of the camera . "Interesting, fresh and most definitely humorous" says the Kerryman.)

Margaret has already made a short documentary on Jerome O' Conner, the talented artist of Annascaul. Margaret’s parents and ancestors are from the surrounding area , lives in Tralee. She is looking for those that might be interested in getting involved. The images will all be displayed in the village during Feile na Bealtaine 2023.

Margaret will reach out to business people in the village, farmers, beauticians, doctors, nurses, artists, shop owners, church representatives, cafes, bars , B&Bs, engineers, postmen, teachers, GAA players and management, home care workers, schools etc.

The exhibition will take place at Aido's Annascaul Cafe and Pottery from April 28th to May 1st . Feel free to get in contact Annascaul Cafe at 086 803 5464 if you wish to be involved in this wonderful idea

Inch Park Run

Inch Beach Parkrun every Saturday morning at 9.30am. This is a free and it's 5k. You can run, jog or walk. All dogs on a short lead. We wish you a Happy New Year 2023! Our Gospel in recent weeks gave us the familiar account of the Beatitudes. In this His first public speech Jesus outlines His values which are often at odds with the values of the world. Followers of Christ are encouraged to make these values part of our everyday life. If we look at the values we find that we do practice them in some ways. We are called to practice them even more. For example, a time when somebody hurt you and you decided to forgive them saying “Don’t worry about it. Let’s forget it”. Blessed are the merciful. Or have you been in a situation where you knew the right thing to do but you struggled with doing it, tempted to just not do so? Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Or have you been with someone who you knew was wrong in what he or she said? Knowing the truth, you decided not to correct them. You chose to not crush their spirit and you remained silent. Blessed are the meek and humble. The Beatitudes are worth another read (Matthew 5:1-12).

Film Review - Knock at the Cabin

Knock at the Cabin is a new horror/thriller/disaster movie from M. Night Shyamalan, best known for classics films The Sixth Sense and Signs. As with Shyamalan’s best films, the premise here is wonderful in its clarity. The cabin-getaway of same-sex couple Eric and Andrew and their adopted daughter Wen, is interrupted by four home-invaders who bring an earth-shattering ultimatum: One family member must die at the hands of the other two, in order to prevent the oncoming apocalypse. Further enjoyment of the film requires a serious suspension of disbelief from this point onwards.

The premise is easily the best tool in the film’s arsenal, with Shyamalan and co. managing to evoke brilliant feelings of suspense and paranoia from the is-it-true-or-is-it-not aspect of the central choice the family are faced with.

He creates a dread-filled atmosphere that intensifies steadily as the film progresses, never losing its grip from start to finish. This is aided by Shyamalan’s clever direction, which uses the cabin setting to its full, claustrophobic potential. Wonderfully, the framing of the camera becomes more pronounced and mechanical during tense or violent scenes, giving off a sense of these scenes being a predetermined cycle that can’t be stopped. This ties-in excellently with the somewhat ritualistic nature of the story, and is all down to Shyamalan’s excellent cinematic-eye. However, while it feels as though Shyamalan matures as a director with every new film he makes, here he seems to take a marked stepbackward in terms of writing when compared to his other recent films (2016’s Split.) The dialogue throughout is unnaturalistic, bordering on mechanical. The characters state their motivations and feelings so bluntly that it becomes difficult to see them as anything other

than vehicles for the story. Thankfully, the outstanding efforts of the film’s cast keep things afloat, even when straddled with Shyamalan’s unemotive dialogue. The central trio of performances are very endearing, making the choice the family are faced with all the more excruciating. However, Dave Bautista is the clear MVP throughout, in the role of the reluctant leader of the home-invaders, Leonard. His hulking physique contrasts wonderfully with his delicate performance, a further indication of why he is acknowledged to be one of the most versatile actor working in Hollywood today. Knock at the Cabin encompasses the best and worst of M. Night Shyamalan’s film-making instincts, while delivering a tense, taut and perfectly-performed thrill-fest.
