Allium Vegetables - So Good they’ll make you Cry!

There more than five hundred plants which fall into the Allium category, but before you get out the box of tissues, not all are edible. We are very familiar with some of the great alliums - garlic, wild garlic, onions, shallots, scallions, leeks and chives. There is little need to go searching for any more as these potent foods provide an abundance of flavour and healthgiving properties. Yet, because they are so ordinary, it is easy to overlook how extraordinary they are! While trends in food can lean towards the exotic and unusual, it is hard to surpass the hardiness and reliability of these amazing natives. Allium vegetables are robust, pungent and luckily for us, plentiful for most part of the year. Onions and garlic can be dried and stored for use outside the growing season – giving us year-round access to their potent powers!

Allium vegetables have a long history as a traditional medicine in nearly all parts of the globe (pardon the pun). These plants have antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal components to protect the plant from microorganisms in the soil that attack its bulb, leaves and stalks. Once activated, they prove to be a powerful weapon against threats, which is probably why these plants enjoy such a robust existence and the ability to grow in a wide range of environments. Whatever about keeping micro bugs at bay, the pungent power of garlic has been known to keep vampires away too such is its protective powers! Research into the health properties of alliums, particularly, garlic and onions shows benefit to cardiovascular health and circulation. They have a cleansing effect on blood, helping reduce bad cholesterol, prevent blood clots and reduce the stickiness of blood improving circulation and reducing the risk of stroke and thrombosis. For this reason, caution is recommended for those taking blood-thinning drugs and using mega-doses of garlic supplements. If in doubt, ask your health practitioner for reasonable guidelines. Food state garlic and onions may still be included in your diet in most cases. More common to most of us, colds and flus can also be prevented and treated with this group of vegetables, particularly onions and garlic. When there is shivering, a blocked nose and painful sinuses, a rich onion and garlic soup provides welcome relief and will ease congestion rapidly. For those with allergies like hayfever, another active component of onions, quercetin, can reduce symptoms such as runny nose and watery eyes. It is no coincidence that onions can provoke watery eyes when handling them yet are an age-old remedy for that very symptom. Mother Nature has a sense of humour! Behind her madness, is a method, as the tears and watery nose drips from chopping onions will wash away allergens, bacteria and viruses trapped in the passages, thus lessening symptoms and suffering time.

Meanwhile, back in the lab, the scientists have researched the individual components that make up alliums to discover that many of which have positive anti-cancer activity. Organosulfur compounds, allylsulfides, allicin and quercetin – found in most allium plants in varying strengths have multiple uses in medicine. Organosulfur compounds have shown benefit to the liver and detoxification pathways while quercetin has been

investigated for its anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory properties. Alliums pack great ammunition against cancerous cells – aids the immune system to identify and destroy cancerous cells, promotes cancer cell death and inhibits tumour growth. As a free radical scavenger, alliums are protective against carcinogenic agents in food, water and the environment. They help remove toxic carcinogenic substances, e.g. nitrosamines from processed meat products, over-grilled meats and tobacco. Their antimicrobial activity offers immune support from bacterial, fungal and viral attacks, particularly for those who have compromised immunity due to illness, age or long-term medication.

Alliums are easily incorporated into the diet and give great flavour and aroma to most dishes. Alliums can be eaten raw once any loose dirt is removed and once washed carefully. They are ideal in cooking because, unlike other plants, the health benefits are not destroyed with heat. When preparing alliums to allow them to rest for a few minutes after cutting or crushing them before adding heat or acid (lemon juice or vinegar) to them. This allows the allicin component to reach its maximum potential.

Wild garlic which is prolific now until the end of April is Nature’s offering of a great all-rounder as a food remedy. Flowers, leaves and stems can be used in soups, added to mashed potato and rice dishes or whizzed in a blender to make pesto. Wild garlic has almost 5 times more allicin than the cultivated common garlic which means a little can go a long way in terms of heart health and cancer protection. With one out of every two Irish citizens developing heart disease and one out of every three at risk of developing cancer it's no wonder Mother Nature provides us with a bumper crop year after year and no surprise that she makes them so alli-yummy!

KERRY ANGLERS REMINDED SEA TROUT MUST BE THROWN BACK IN WATER

Anglers are being reminded of laws that mean sea trout must be thrown back in the water is still in effect. The Waterville Area Bye-Law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout caught in the Waterville area. Inland Fisheries Ireland says it mainly affects on the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries, the waters of the Waterville system including Lough Currane and the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay. It mainly affects on the river Inny (Knockmoyle), Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all the tributary rivers and lakes and the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay.

CHEETAHS BACK IN INDIA WHILE WOLVES RETURN TO BELGIUM.

The relevance of this to Irish and especially local agriculture may be tentative, but it is there. There have been calls for the return of wolves, Lynx and even bears to the wilds in Ireland. Lynx and wolves, maybe, but I do not think that we as a country/rural community would be prepared for meeting a bear in the wilds, just yet. Bearing in mind the recent movie Cocaine Bear!! However such environmental re-introductions have occurred elsewhere, but with the jury still out.

Two Namibian cheetahs relocated to India last year have been released into the wild, more than seven decades after the world's fastest land animal was declared extinct in the South Asian country. Both cheetahs are doing good. The two cheetahs Obaan and Asha were among eight cheetahs brought to India last September after India's top court ruled in 2020 that the species should be reintroduced on an experimental basis. The programme is a major prestige project for the Ministry for Agriculture who oversaw the release of the animals into an enclosure after their arrival. Twelve more of the globally listed "vulnerable" big cats were translocated from South Africa last month, with India aiming to bring in about 100 of them over the next decade.

The last Asiatic cheetah to roam the sub-continent was believed to have been hunted down in 1947 by an Indian prince. The spotted feline was declared officially extinct in India in 1952. Kuno National Park, a wildlife sanctuary in central India, was selected for relocation of the African cheetahs - a different subspecies - for its abundant prey and grasslands.

The African cheetah's introduction in India is the first intercontinental relocation of the planet's fastest land animal. Critics have warned the creatures may struggle to adapt to the Indian habitat due to competition for prey from a significant number of leopards in the national park. Cheetahs are one of the oldest big cat species, with ancestors dating back about 8.5 million years, and they once roamed widely throughout Asia and Africa in great numbers. But today, after their extinction from many countries across the Middle East and Asia, only around 7,000 remain, primarily in the African savannahs.

Half way across the globe and much closer to home, researcher from the Belgian Institute for Nature and Forest Research (INBO) have recently announced the sighting of wolves in the eastern province of Limburg. The sighting of wolf-paw prints indicate that they are moving into the region from and Western Germany. For the first time in more than 100 years a small number of these predators has started to settle here. Wolves were once widely hunted in Europe. Local folklore says that, before their recent return, the last wolf in Belgium was shot by the nation's King Leopold II in the 1890s. Estimates vary but around 15 to 20 wolves are currently thought to be in the country, with one pack in Flanders plus another in southern Wallonia, as well as a newly settled pair. Numbers are much higher in, for example, neighbouring France and Germany,

where hundreds of the predators are now thought to live. The British Government has ruled out re-introducing wolves at present, while the Irish Government has not yet received a memo on the subject.

This part of a wider expansion in Europe that's triggering alarm in some communities, while being welcomed by conservationists. But this animal's resurgence, while not down to just one factor, is certainly no simple act of nature.

The reason why they are back is mainly legal protection. Protection for wolves came in under the Bern Convention and subsequent 1992 EU Habitats Directive. This prohibited the deliberate capture or killing of a wolf, with some exceptions. From the early 1990s, a lot has happened in Europe, and the wolf really started to disperse all over the continent. A Europe-wide assessment in September 2022 said that, "after a severe reduction in the first half of the 20th Century", the best available data now suggested that "the total number of wolves in the 27 EU member states is likely to be in the order of 19,000. According to the team of zoologists from INBO, dietary analysis in the area has found that the wolves mainly eat roe deer and wild boar but they also feed on local livestock, amounting to approximately 15% of their diet. However, predators help to repress disease levels as they prey on the sick and the young.

In light of this, there is no such thing as a “Wolf-Proof Fence” as they are so smart that they can get over or around any barrier they encounter. Because of the threats to livestock, some are advocating for more radical counter-measures, with some EU lawmakers recently voting for a downgrade in the wolf's protected status, stating that their population growth cannot go unchecked. In Sweden, 57 wolves were shot between January and February in a government-licensed cull. Opponents have questioned the legality of the cull. The issue also gained fresh attention when Dolly, a pony belonging to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, was killed by a wolf in Germany last year.

Back to Belgium, after over a century without any wolves, it's unsurprising their return has sparked some "panic". People will need to adapt their behaviour, to be more careful and vigilant and to build more solid fences. If they do so, it's perfectly possible to co-exist with wolves. Not all animals have to fit into the human way of thinking or existance. Maybe some animals just have a right to exist, not just because we find them useful. Maybe, some day we will see “a (were)wolf walking in soho in the Rain, looking for a place called Lee Ho Fooks!!!!!”

BISS – WHAT IS IT

The new CAP schemes for Irish farmers will focus on improving the environment and helping to prevent climate change. Supposedly this is going to be easy, but if the transition from BPS to BISS is anything to g by, there is little chance of that.

The Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) replaces the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS). The BISS is designed to provide a direct income support to Irish farmers to underpin their continued sustainability and viability. The main income support will continue to be based on Payment Entitlements.

To receive a support under BISS, applicants must:

• h ave an Eligible Hectare to accompany each Payment Entitlement. One Eligible Hectare of land declared equates to one BISS Payment Entitlement

• be a holder of a registered herd number or have applied for a herd number on or before 29 May 2023

• be an Active Farmer: The person claiming payments on the land must be the person farming and/or managing the land, that is, the Active Farmer. The farming activities can include meeting a minimum stocking rate (0.10 livestock unit per forage hectare), producing crops, cutting hay/silage, maintaining landscape features. If you are not the person farming/managing the land, you should not be declaring the land on your 2023 BISS application

This all sounds easy, but there was a perfectly good system, (well, an adequate one) for the BPS but all was changed and in doing so, it appears that between one third and one half of all clients belonging to farm advisors have disappeared from the agfood system in the transition

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

from one to another. To compound this matter, the details of most of the farmers who successfully joined ACRES cannot be accessed, as they are not uploaded yet. And finally, while DAFM has announced that the BISS portal on agfood is up and running and open for business and therefore applications, this is a tad untrue. Patience is asked from farmers, and a bit of graciousness from DAFM mandarins.

The closing date has been extended by two weeks, but the opening date was delayed by a month so far, and scheme system may not be fit for purpose for another two weeks. Additionally, DAFM are only rolling out training on the new scheme and system, piecemeal (on a weekly basis) and this will not be complete for another three weeks. So even if you are ready to submit your BISS for , the system just may not be ready then. Patience again!!!!

ACRES 2022 APPLICATIONS

Finally, all who successfully joined the new agri-environmental scheme (ACRES) should be congratulated. This is only the start of a 5-Year (or as in the case of GLAS, possible a 7-Year) scheme commitment. Remember to familiarise yourself with your obligations and learn the deadlines for any t-me/term actions such a Tree Planting or Wild Bird (Cover) Food. This is a farmer-led scheme, and t is up to you to do things, carry out actions and deliver. If you do not compete the task, you are liable to face penalties, as a result.

WORLD'S SECOND-BIGGEST FISHING VESSEL ACTIVE OFF SOUTHWEST COAST

The world’s second-biggest fishing vessel has been fishing off the Kerry and Cork coast in recent days. The FV Margiris is 142 metres in long and is the same size as 14 regular-sized trawlers. The Lithuanian-registered Dutch owned vessel uses drag nets more than a kilometre in length. Environmentalists and the local fishing industry claim it clears large amounts of marine life and Greenpeace has alleged pods of dolphins have been caught in its nets. However, the company which operates the FV Margiris, Parlevliet & Van der Plas says the vessel doesn’t cause the amount of bycatch claimed and that it can actually cause less damage

to the marine environment than traditional trawlers. This still remains to be seen and an unbiased report of findings would be welcome

And Finally………Wishing everybody a Happy & Holy St Patrick’s Day. See you at the Parade.

From the 1911 Census in West Kerry

. In this and the next issue we’re going to look at longevity – who were the oldest people on the peninsula, from Camp to the Blaskets, as recorded in the 1911 Census which was taken on Sunday April 2.

Of course there can only be one ‘oldest’ and that would mean a very short article. We’ll start at age 89 – people in their 90th year of life. They were born around 1822 and we’ll include some historical notes of the times.

Ferriter, Mary, 89, lived in the home of Patrick O’Donnell, widower and farmer in Bracloon, Ballinvoher. Mary was a ‘Spinster’ by occupation and was single. Her surname was incorrectly transcribed as ‘Hinter’ in the printed census form.

1822 was a famine year. The potato crop fared badly the previous year so that by the summer of 1822 an estimated one million people were facing starvation in County Kerry and eight other counties in the south-west and west.

Healy, Michael, 89, lived in Cloghanisheskeen, Castlegregory, with his wife Margaret, 73. He was a ‘Police Pensioner’. The couple’s union had produced 9 children but only 3 of them were still living.

1822 was the year a large Chinese junk sank in the south China Sea with the loss of up to 1,600 people – more than the Titanic 90 years later.

Ní Guithín, Cáit, 89, lived in Ballynahow, Dunquin, with her husband Pádraig, 72, a farmer. There were eight other people in the house on Census night including Seagán Ua Cinnéide. The original census form is a bit of a mess and difficult to read.

1822 the year of the last public whipping in Edinburgh.

Martin, Ellen, 89 and a widow, was living with her son John, 51, and his wife Mary J, 58, plus their four children in Kilquane. They were farmers.

1822 was the year which saw the establishment of a uniformed police force known as the County Constabulary in Ireland.

Sullivan, Johanna, 89, lived in Minard West in the home of her son Jeremiah, 70, and his wife Katie, 57, plus five of their nine living children. This was also a farming family.

1822. Thomas Foley, the parish priest of Dingle, wrote to the Chief Secretary of Ireland proposing the establishment of a non-denominational school in Dingle for local and country children without distinction of sect or religion.

Sayers, Patrick, 89, lived in Glinfahan where he was the head of the household, a widower and a farmer. His son John, 53, and daughter-in-law Julia, 56, also lived in the house along with their five children who were all aged in their twenties.

In July 1822 Thomas Foley, P.P. wrote to the Chief Secretary outlining the action taken to help the distressed poor families which included ‘600 families without means or employment in a state of absolute distress’.

Finn, Edmond, 90. Lived in Teer, Brandon. He was a widower, a retired farmer but still head of the family. He shared the home with eight other family members including four-month-old Thomas Finn.

Walsh, Nora, 90, also lived in Teer, Brandon in the home of her ‘Relative’ Michael Walsh, 40 and a farmer and his wife Ellen, 38.

O’Connor, John J, 90, lived in Faha, Cloghane. He was head of the family, a farmer and was married to Noria, 76. Their marriage had produce nine

children and seven of them were still living.

Landers, Johanna, 90, was a single woman living in the home of her nephew Michael, 56, and his wife Mary Landers, 47, plus their four children. This was a farming family.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Eibhlín, 90, lived in Smerwick with her farmer son Pádraig, 50, his wife Peig, 45, and their three children.

Russell, Richard, 90, and a widower and retired farmer lived in Ardamore (Kilmalkedar) with his farmer son John Richard, 42, John’s wife Mary, 47, and their ten children.

Notes of a Ukrainian in Ireland.

The Secret of Snake Island

Kateryna Kobylnik

In Ireland there are islands shrouded in legends. But did you know that there is a mystical island in Ukraine?

The ancient Greeks called it "Achilles Island". It is currently known as Zmiinyi (Snake Island). The legendary phrase "Russian warship, go f*** yourself!" was born there. It sounded in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On that fateful day, the island was captured by the enemy.

On April 12, 2022, the Ukrainian postal service put into circulation the stamp "Russian warship, go to...!", which was sold in 5 million copies.

On April 13, the Ukrainian missile complex "Neptun" struck and sank the missile cruiser "Moskva", which offered to surrender to the defenders of Snake Island.

On June 30, the Ukrainian military completely liberated Island and returned the flag of Ukraine on it. Unfortunately, the aggressor did not abandon the capture plans, so there were many attacks.

So the question arises, why is this small island, 662 x 560 metres, so important to the invader? Some perfect strategic location, isn't it that simple?

Indeed, the island is located in the northwestern part of the Black Sea, which is quite successful from a military point of view. It is located 35 kilometres from mainland Ukraine and 40 kilometers from Romania, which is a member of NATO.

If we look at the island from a different angle, we can find information that it was a sacred destination of the culture of the ancient Greeks. This is already becoming interesting, because seekers of sacred cities and objects are always side by side with wars.

The Greeks believed that Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War, was buried on the island. Ancient Greek heroes were necessarily buried with weapons. Therefore, it is possible that the caves of the island still preserve the famous shield of Achilles, which was forged by the god of fire Hephaestus and is considered a symbol of invincibility.

The archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, archaeologists of the Third Reich on the instructions of Adolf Hitler, and employees of Joseph Stalin's NKVD sought to find golden armour weighing 15 kilograms.

The legend says: "Who owns Snake Island - owns the world!"

According to mythology, Snake Island, also known as the White Island, is the key to the Black Sea. It's a talisman in battles and a source of strength. Ancient and Vedic legends of the world are connected with it.

According to an ancient Greek legend, the island was raised from the bottom of the sea by the goddess Thetis, who is the daughter of the sea god Nereus, and presented to her son Achilles.

The name comes from the myth, according to which Achilles could turn into a fire-breathing flying snake with huge wings in a moment clashes with enemies. In the 6th century BC, a temple was built in his honour on the island, which was credited with healing properties. It was strictly forbidden for visitors to stay overnight. In the sanctuary stood a 20-metre-high sculpture of Achilles in battle armour, and the shield was bricked up.

The Amazons tried to rob and destroy the temple. They equipped 50 ships to the island. Having come to the shore and cut down the trees around the temple, Amazons on horses tried to get inside. But Achilles looked menacingly at the horsewomen, and from this look the horses went mad, raised their heels, threw the Amazons to the ground and began to trample them with their hooves. In an instant the army was destroyed. Since then, the trees on the island have not grown, but at night you can still hear the rattle of Achilles' weapons.

And the strength of Achilles is in time with Ukraine.

By the way, there are no snakes on Snake Island.

Duncan Stewart, one of the country’s foremost environmental campaigners visited Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory last week and was treated to a very interactive workshop with the TYs showcasing their work in Environmental Science class. Duncan was very impressed with the work of our Young Environmentalists, in particular The Habitat Heroes, Eco Empire, Eco Rising and Petal Works. The students eagerly showed Duncan around the Geo Park and talked him through some of the work they have been doing this year, planting trees, identifying habitats, bark mulching and organising a polytunnel!!

Duncan praised the young people for their passion, enthusiasm and the fantastic work they have been doing towards creating a greener school environment and encouraging others to live more sustainability. He also spoke about the importance of always trying to make an informed decision about what is right for our climate and how we can best look after our flora and fauna.

It was an inspiring afternoon and the school would like to thank The Dingle Hub for including us in their tour of The Dingle Peninsula. All were very grateful for the opportunity to meet with Duncan and discuss the issues of climate concern. Thank you to Ms. Hazel Reidy Blennerhassett and Mr. James Greaney for accompanying Duncan and well done to the TYs for their contribute and commitment to excellence as well as the guidance they receive from their Teacher of Environmental Studies Ms Karen Blennerhassett.

Lee Strand West Kerry League Semi-Final 2023 - Lios Pόil 2-12 to 1-13 Annascaul

Lios Pόil will play Dingle in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2023 after a two-point win over Annascaul in Páirc Uí Bharóid, Lios Póil last Saturday, Lios Pόil 2-12 to 1-13 Annascaul. In a very entertaining game Lios Pόil saw off a very strong, Annascaul, second half comeback to secure their place in the 2023 Lee Strand West Kerry League Final against Dingle.

Playing with the wind Lios Pόil started at pace and were first to score with a point from a mark from Marc Ó Mainίn. This was followed with a Marc Ó Mainίn point from play shortly after. Marc Ó Mainίn was causing Annascaul all sorts of problems early on and it was a long ball from him to Maitiú Seán Ó Grifín, who put Colm Ó Muirthile through to score Lios Pόil’s first goal after 6 minutes played. A Marc Ó Mainίn point from play was followed by a wonderful Marc Ó Mainίn goal on the 9-minute mark. This was followed by an excellent score from play by wing back Cathal Ó Gealbháin. With 15 minutes played in the first half of the Lee Strand West Kerry League SemiFinal of 2023 the score was, Lios Pόil 2-4 to 0-0 Annascaul.

Seán Ó Nuanáin continued to exert Lios Pόil’s dominance when he kicked a fine point from play. Annascaul registered their first score of the game through a Jason Hickson point from play shortly after. Colm Ó Muirthile kicked a point from a free for Lios Pόil which was followed by a Killian Falvey point from play for Annascaul. Another Jason Hickson point from a free kick put Annascaul back into the game but Lios Pόil finished the half as they started the half in total control. Points from play from Marc Ó Mainίn and Colm Ó Muirthile along with points from free kicks from Ó Mainίn and Ó Muirthile saw off the Annascaul first half comeback. When Referee Mícheál Murt Ó Muircheartaigh blew the half time whistle the score in Páirc Uí Bharóid, Lios Póil in the Lee Strand West Kerry League

Semi-Final of 2023 was, Lios Pόil 2-10 to 0-3 Annascaul.

Killian Falvey with a point from play for Annascaul opened the scoring in the second half. Both teams were reduced to fourteen men after Noel Ó hUigín for Lios Pόil and Colm Morairty for Annascaul were sent off the field of play. James Crean scored Annascaul’s goal shortly after. This was followed by Jason Hickson getting a second yellow card which resulted in him being sent off the field of play and Annascaul down to 13 men against 14 men from Lios Pόil. Killian Falvey with a point for Annascaul was met with a Cormac Ó Cinnéide point from play for Lios Pόil. With 15 minutes played in the second half of the Lee Strand West Kerry League Semi-Final of 2023 the score was, Lios Pόil 2-11 to 1-5 Annascaul.

The game settled down and two James Crean points from free kicks for Annascaul were followed with points from play from Killian Falvey and Goalkeeper, Alan Falvey. Another James Crean point from a free kick was followed by two Killian Falvey points from play to leave only two points between the sides with 30 minutes played. A Marc Ó Mainίn point from play for Lios Pόil extended their lead to three points and some great defending by the home side saw them withstand and repel any and all goal chances by Annascaul. A point from a free kick from Aidan Crean was to be Annascaul’s last score and the final kick of the game. When Referee Mícheál Murt Ó Muircheartaigh blew the full time whistle the score in Páirc Uí Bharóid, Lios Póil in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Semi-Final of 2023 was, Lios Pόil 2-12 to 1-13 Annascaul. Schools Team Up With Council To Highlight Dog Foul Problem

Kerry County Council is teaming up with local schools to draw attention to the issue of dog fouling. The initiative will be run through the Green Schools Programme and will involve students patrolling areas near their schools, spraying any dog faeces found with temporary bright yellow spray paint, thereby highlighting the prevalence of the problem.

“Dog fouling damages the aesthetic value of our shared public spaces, and is a nuisance that undermines our outdoor experience, particularly for vulnerable members of society such as children, those with visual impairments, and wheelchair users,” said Breda Moriarty, Environmental Awareness Officer with Kerry County Council.

“But dog fouling also carries a more serious risk. Dog faeces is harmful to people’s health as it can contain dangerous parasites and bacteria,” she added.

Kerry County Council is urging dog owners to take responsibility by picking up after their dogs and reducing the amount of dog faeces being left in public spaces. Speaking at St Brigid’s Secondary School this week, Breda Moriarty reminded dog owners of their responsibilities.

“The schools involved in this campaign will assist in highlighting the problem, but we want to see dog owners take responsibility by picking up after their pets. We hope that this campaign will change attitudes to dog fouling and lead to an overall reduction in the phenomenon.”

A similar initiative was run by Galway City Council recently and it resulted in a 50% reduction in dog fouling.

Under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, dog owners are legally obliged to clean up after their pets if they foul in public places, with owners who fail to do so facing fines of €150. Non-payment of these initial fines can prove even more costly, carrying penalties of up to €3,000 on conviction.

In 2022, Kerry County Council processed the highest number of fines for instances of dog fouling of any local authority.

The problem in Dingle has been highlighted recently with residents of the town voicing concern and frustration with the problem. It seems a number of dog owners are happy to bring dog waste bags with them on their walks but decide to dispose of the bags in people's gardens or on the footpath. The stretch from Ó Cátháin's Fish Factory to Milltown Bridge proving particularily popular for the disposal of the animal faeces.

This shows a total disregard for the people and businesses in the area and gives a very poor image of the town to visitors who walk this road. If you're going to go to the bother of bringing a dog waste bag with you surely it's not that difficult to dispose of it properly, as opposed to leaving it in someone's garden or on the footpath. It doesn't take that much effort to do the right thing.

Tom Ó Neachtain, Ruairí Ó hÓgáin, Sarah Ní Chonchúir, Béibhinn Nic a’ tSíthigh & Lukne Balaseviciute

Na laethanta seo, braitheann sé ar nós go bhfuil muintir na Pobalscoile go léir ag rith ‘is ag rás le himeachtaí, le cluichí agus le turasanna difriúla. Bhí mí iontach ag an Idirbhliain lena Seó ilchineálach Ruaile Buaile, agus táimid ar fad ag súil le Lá Fhéile Lá le Phádraig, agus na ranganna a bheidh á chailliúint againn dá bharr!

Imeachtaí na hIdirbhliana!

Seó Ruaile Buaile

Tar éis cúpla mí fhada oibre agus ullmhúcháin, cuireadh Seó na hIdirbhliana ar stáitse ag tús na míosa. Bhí trí dhráma éagsúil le feiscint : Coinne gan choinne (leagan do “First Dates” suite i gCorca Dhuibhne), Rupaul agus an Dá Phadraig, agus Alice amú i DCP ( “Alice in Wonderland,” suite i PCD). Chuir an Idirbhliain an-chuid oibre isteach sa seó, ag foghlaim na línte agus na rincí. Bhí an-chraic ag gach duine a ghlac páirt agus d’éirigh leo seó iontach a chruthú faoi dheirigh.

Voyage á Paris!

Ag deireadh na míosa seo chaite, chuaigh daltaí ó ranganna sinsearacha na scoile ar thuras 3 oíche go Páras an tseachtain seo caite. Thugadar turas ar an Louvre, an Túr Eiffel, Disneyland, Pálas Versailles, an Montmatre agus an-chuid áiteanna eile. Bhí blaise acu de bhéilte ón Fhrainc agus bhí seans acu a gcuid fraincíse a chleachtadh. Bhaineadar go léir ana thaitneamh as, agus cinnte bhíodar tugtha traochta ina dhiaidh.

Cainteoirí

Thug Duncan Stewart cuairt ar dhaltaí na hIdirbhliana le déanaí. Bhí sé ag caint leo faoina shaol mar ailtire, agus na céimeanna a chaithimid a thógaint chun a bheith níos inbhunaithe ó lá go lá.

Chomh maith le sin, tháinig grúpa ós na 'Special Olympics' isteach. Thugadar léargas don Idirbhliain ar na himeachtaí a bhíonn ar siúil acu agus a dturasanna atá ag teacht suas. Cheap na daltaí go léir go raibh sé ana shuimiúil agus guímid gach rath orthu i gComórtas Domhanda Samhraidh na gCluichí Oilimpeacha Speisialta 2023!

Junk Kouture

Tá muintir na scoile go léir an-bhrodúil as triúr dalta ón Idirbhliain, mar táid imithe tríd go dhí an Craobh Náisúinta Junk Kouture i mBaile Átha Cliath. Tá dhá ghrúpa tar éis dul ar aghaidh. Ceann acu ná “Tarbh na dTonnta,” déanta ag Aoife Ni Dhonnagáin agus Kate Gillespie. An culaith eile ná “Human Composition” déanta

ag Aisha Scharer. Beidh an chraobh ar siúl i Mí Bealtaine. Go neirí leo!!

Cork Pops

Chuaigh Bliain a haon agus a dó go dtí Cork Pops i gCorcaigh. Bhí an-lá acu ag an gceolchoirm agus ligeadh dóibh dul amach ag siopadóireacht ina dhiaidh.

Savour Our Flavour

Ghlac Tom Ó Neachtain, Bliain 4, páirt sa chomórtas cócaireachta 'Savour Our Flavour' i gColáiste Mhainistir na Corann i gCorcaigh. Bhí ar a bhéile féin a dhéanamh suas ag úsáid bia ó Chorca Dhuibhne, agus d’éirigh leis píog ubh agas ispín a dhéanamh.

Bímis Buíoch as Logainmneacha Dhún Chaoin…

Daithí de Mórdha

Nuair a chuireann leaganacha truaillithe, caillte, coillte de logainmneacha olc ar ár gcolúnaí bíonn sé buíoch as an tuairisc atá ar fáil i ‘Logainmneacha

Dhún Chaoin’ ar phobal, ar chultúr, ar nósanna agus ar theanga a pharóiste féin le míle bliain anuas

Bhíos thíos in Uíbh Ráthach tamall de laethanta ó shin agus mé ag féachaint chugam agus uaim ar mo shlí abhaile, ó is mó radharc suaithinseach a leagfá do shúil air thíos ar na bólaí úd. Is dócha, lena cheart féin a thabhairt d’Uíbh Ráthach, go bhféadfaí a rá go bhfuil sé ar dara háit is deise ar domhan, í ina tánaiste ag an leithinis atá lastuaidh trasna Bhá an Daingin uaithi.

Ach ba dhóbair go gcuirfeadh amharc amháin a tháinig os mo chomhair ar an gclaí mé. Rud chomh neafaiseach le comhartha bóthair, gan ach an t-aon logainm amháin air. Tuairín na Sliogán. Nach deas neamhurchóideach, fileata go deimhin, é mar logainm. Ach dá bhfeicfeadh sibh an abláil mhíshlachtmhar mhíthuisceanach mhíthrócaireach de phraistriúchán a bhí fairis ar an gcomhartha.

Tooreennasliggaun.

Ní mór ná gur chailleas smacht ar an mótar, bhí oiread goimhe orm go bhféadfaí glacadh le leagan chomh truaillithe, chomh caillte, chomh coillte, d’ainm. Ach ní haon scéal nua é sin domhsa – tá scríofa cheana agam i dtaobh ár logainmneacha agus na haistriúcháin gan ciall gan réasún orthu atá inghlactha sa tír seo le blianta móra fada. Murach an ceann scríbe a bhí agam, agus a bhfuil foghlamtha agam fé logainm na háite san le bliain anuas, bhíos tabhartha faoi chomhartha Tooreennasliggaun lem’ haicsá.

Bhí sé de phribhléid agam bheith sáite i dtogra a tháinig chun foirfeachta agus chun coinlíochta roinnt blianta ó shin – an leabhar Logainmneacha

Dhún Chaoin. Bailiúchán d’os cionn 800 logainm ón bparóiste atá ann, maille le dinnseanchas, stair, seanchas agus téarmaíocht na n-ainmneacha úd. Tá tuairisc sna logainmneacha seo ar mhuintir, ar chultúr, ar nósanna, ar shlí bheatha agus ar theanga Dhún Chaoin le míle bliain anuas. Tobar gan sárú ar ár ndúchas iad ár logainmneacha, agus táimid go mór faoi chomaoin ag na bailitheoirí a chnuasaigh agus a chaomhnaigh iad.

Agus is mór an scamall an saibhreas teanga atá iontu. Focail ar nós ‘praipín’ (tor beag), ‘screathain’ (talamh garbh, tomach, clochach, ar fhána) ‘feórainn’ (talamh ar bhruach íseal na mara), ‘féith’ (talamh bog go mbíonn uisce ann), gort, páirc, móinéar, inse, fearann, caológ, faiche, leac, leaca, fochais, drom, branda, bealach. Téarmaí nach mbítear á n-úsáid a thuilleadh, nó a bhformhór pé scéal é, táid ag tabhairt an fhéir i teannta na ndaoine ar a rabhadar ar bharra a dteangacha acu.

(É sin ráite, is istigh sa Bhlascaod a ceapadh an píosa dinnseanchais ba fhileata agus ba dhoimhne dár scríobhadh riamh, nuair a bhreac Tomás Dhónaill Criomhthain an méid seo a leanas ina leabhar Dinnseanchas na mBlascaodaí: ‘An Gort Fada. Fuair an gort seo a ainm óna fhaid.’)

Níl ach fíorbheagán den 800 logainm úd go gcloisfeá iarracht an Bhéarla orthu, agus ó táid ag imeacht ón úsáid, ní dócha go mbeidh liobar drochBhéarla riamh orthu. Sólás éigin an méid sin.

Seo blaiseadh de Logainmneacha Dhún Chaoin:

An Seanduine/ An Scológ: fochais carraige í seo lasmuigh de Liúir, i bpaiste farraige a bhíonn ana-shuaite. Bíonn taoidí anoir aniar aneas aduaidh timpeall na carraige seo, agus bhíodh sé de bhéas ag na seandaoine blúire tobac a chaitheamh i dtreo an tseanduine nuair a bheidíst ag gabháilt thairis. Nuair a bhíonn an fharraige suaite go maith agus cúrán bán ina thimpeall, bheadh an áit dainséarach, agus é de nath ag na hiascairí, “seachain an seanduine nuair atá sé á bhearradh féin.”

Cuas a’ Chaca: Níl anso ach go gcuireann an t-ainm ag sciotaráil ar nós gearrchaile scoile mé. Ach bheadh an t-ainm seo úsáideadh, is dócha, dá mbeadh nath úd an Bhéarla á aistriú agat – “i gCuas an Chaca gan aon mhaide rámha agat.” (cuireann Poll Chaca Dá meangadh orm chomh maith. Nach leanbaí an fear mé.)

Tobar na dTrí dTeorann (nó Tobar na gCeithre dTeorann): Tá sé seo laistíos de thigh tábhairne Khrúgair. Bhailigh leanaí scoile Dhún Chaoin an

t-ainm seo mar pháirt de thogra a bhí ar siúl acu fé stiúir an mhúinteora Micheál Ó Dubhshláine sa bhliain 1982, agus seo cuid den méid a scríobhadar: “Tobar na dTrí dTeorann a thug Kruger ar a thigh tábhairne nuair a fuair sé ceadúnas don gcéad uair … deireann Micheál Mistéal go raibh leigheas ann, agus go bhfuil fós.” Tá sé íorónta, leigheas a bheith sa tobar, agus míle ceann tinn cruthaithe ag an dtábhairne lastuas de…

Sconna Mhatha Chomáin: Eas atá ar an abhainn thuas sa sliabh é seo. ní fios cad é bunrúta an ainm, ach go mb’fhéidir gur Sconna Fhaiche an Chomáin atá ann le ceart. Pé scéal é, is dóigh liom go bhfuil rithim agus ceol iontach sa logainm seo.

Crann Kane: Crann a chuir duine de mhuintir Chatháin sarar thug sé aghaidh ar Mheiriceá. Bhí rann beag coitianta sa pharóiste fé fhear a bhíodh ag bailiú na gcipíní a bhíodh ag titim ós na préacháin agus neadacha á ndéanamh acu thuas sa chrann. D’úsáideadh sé na cipíní chun tine a adhaint dó féin: ‘A Mhichíl Uí Chatháin, is beannaithe an duine tú/agus éiníní an aeir ag bailiú tine chugat’.

-Tá Logainmneacha Dhún Chaoin, Co. Chiarraí, le Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin Teo ar fáil sa Chaifé Liteartha sa Daingean, nó is féidir é a ordú ón gComharchumann féin.

By chance, Mary Lavery Carrig met Gerry O'Currain when they were both standing near the nun's graveyard in the Diseart Gardens. They started chatting and she realised Gerry was a great storyteller and knew the sisters of the convent well. It is a way of life no longer part of Dingle's story today and one which fascinated Mary.

Recording him, Mary asked Gerry to tell her those stories and the result is a new radio documentary, to be aired on Radio Kerry on March 17th, Friday morning at 9 am, St Patrick's Day.

Castlegregory Celtic FC: Result: Premier A: Castlegregory Celtic FC A 0-4 Killarney Celtic FC. 3 goals in the first 25 minutes for Killarney meant a depleted Castle side were always chasing the game. Castle steadied the ship and despite losing 5 players by half time Castle kept Killarney at bay until a 4th was eventually added late in the second half, despite an

excellent performance from stand in Keeper Enda Whelan who played a blinder in the second half. Overall, a disappointing result but lots of positives to take forward, especially the performances of some of the younger players like Owen Garvey, Cian Courtney Smith and Dara Butler.

A Proper Bacon and Cabbage, Mash Potato with Parsley Sauce

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

to remove more moisture and will help to give them a creamy texture. Place the milk and butter in a small pot, heat this and add some salt and pepper. Take the potato off the heat and mash them well. Use a potato ricer if you have one. Stir in the milk and as needed and to the texture you like. Taste and season.

For the cabbage

Bring a pot of salted water to the boil. Add the cabbage. Cook for about 2-3 minutes. The cabbage should be cooked at this stage, taste it to check and strain the water from it. Cool the cabbage if you are doing this before the bacon is cooked.

To re-heat the cabbage, add it along with a knob of butter in a pot add a little salt and pepper and stir over a medium heat until it is hot.

To make the sauce

Add the milk and slice of onions to a pot, place this over a medium heat. Meanwhile melt the butter in another pot then add the flour and mix this all together. Bring this to a simmer. Strain this into the butter and flour mixture, whisk this well to break any lumps. Put back over the medium heat and cook for about 15 minutes. The sauce should have thickened (if too much add a little milk). Add the parsley, taste and season.

Hard to beat when it is done well.

We sometimes forget about how good bacon and cabbage really is. Maybe we see it as a dish that is old fashioned or maybe it seems like too much of a bother. If you have never cooked it or haven’t had it in a while, it is worth re-visiting. To me, I feel it needs all the elements, a creamy mash potato, cabbage finished with butter, bacon that is not too salty and a silky parsley sauce. I think the little extra work really completes the dish. Savour it and serve it with pride.

Serves 6

Ingredients

2kg collar or loin of bacon

For the potato

6 medium sized potatoes, washed and peeled, cut into even sizes

100-120ml milk

30g butter

salt and pepper

For the cabbage

1 head of cabbage, savoy or green, sliced finely knob of butter

For the sauce

500ml milk

½ onion, sliced

few parsley stalks

good handful of flat leaf parsley, chopped

salt and pepper

Method

Put the bacon in a large pot of cold water. Bring it to the boil and strain the water and add fresh cold water. Make sure bacon is covered. Once this comes to the boil, turn it down to a simmer (it will take about 45 minutes per kilo). The potatoes, cabbage and sauce can be prepared while the meat is cooking.

For the potatoes

Put the potatoes into a pot of cold water. Make sure they are covered well with the water. Add some salt, bring this to the boil then simmer for 15-20 minutes. Pierce them with a small knife, if the goes through them easy they should be ready. Strain them and put the strained potatoes back in the pot and over a medium heat. Stir for 2 minutes, this will help

St Patrick Was A ‘Blow-In’, or, the Many Meanings of the Dingle Peninsula

Kerry’s Corca Dhuibhne is hugely popular among visitors from all around the world and has become home to many a “blow-in” who arrived casually or unexpectedly but ended up relocating here. Not unlike our very own St. Patrick, himself—a stranger to Ireland when he first came as a slave— who would not only willingly return but ultimately choose it over the land of his birth, and stayed here for the rest of his life?

The attraction of many to the peninsula often derives from the rich culture and heritage of The Dingle Peninsula itself. Some may be unaware that the density, variety, and number (2,000!) of archeological monuments on the Peninsula surpass any in Europe, and that of these, over 60 are “Ogham Stones.” These almost alien-looking pillars stand two to 17 feet tall, with strange notches carved across or along lines on their surface. The markings are remnants of the Ogham alphabet—possibly tracing back to the 4th Century AD—our earliest encounter with the Irish language in its written form.

And it speaks volumes about the Irish and their history. As Billy Mag Fhloinn, an archaeologist and folklorist living in Ballyferriter, sees it, “that a few Latin names are encoded in the inscriptions indicates people were speaking Latin here; and we see quite a strong influence of Welsh in the spelling of people’s names in some instances. So we can see the way some of the people who brought Christianity to Ireland were people who spoke an early form of Welsh, and that’s really important to know because Patrick came from the West of Britain.” The English of later times might have classified him as a Welshman, and his first language was almost certainly an antecedent of Welsh. Yet, Patrick was a footnote in the history of Wales—and, as we know, utterly central to that of Ireland. But, in fact, Ogham is an alphabet! Aside from inscriptions on manuscripts by early Christian monks in Ireland, its use was to remember people’s names—mostly men’s, their fathers’, and their grandfathers’—on burial stones. “Names are the oldest things people write; they don’t write letters to one another, they just write names,” according to Dr Damian McManus, professor of Early Irish and head of the Department of Irish at Trinity College.

And there’s a whole lot more naming going on here still in the Irish language. “Place names are still understood, the names of fields and names of rocks in fields—people still know them,” says Mag Fhloinn, who reads the landscape like a manuscript. As he describes it, countless generations paved the landscape with successive layers of stories and meaning, it

was a way to make sense of their world in a pre-scientific age, a way of encoding information—fairy legends, historical traditions, folk stories. Someone steeped in that language is Billy’s wife, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, singer and musician. As she said, “When I was a kid, I was always told, ‘you're the last one, you're the last generation and it's up to you to save the language,’ which was always a lot of pressure. And I still feel it today, but, you know, it's still not dead; they've been trying to kill it for 1,000 years, but it's still there, clinging on.”

And yet, it’s a struggle, she laments: “we are desperately trying to hang onto something, as well as be a part of the modern world.” As an antidote—a “way to stay positive and not despair about the loss of the old—is to create the new and try and bring it with me,” she made “electronic music, but with Irish-language songs: nothing to do with traditional music, nothing to do with diddley-eye, nothing to do with long ago. It's about not looking behind you but bringing it with you and carrying it forward.”

And isn’t that what Irish traditional music is all about, anyway—whether it has words in it or not . Due to ‘oral transmission’—the tradition of passing knowledge of Irish traditional music from one generation to another, from teacher to student, from musician to musician, without sheet music—no tune is ever played the same way twice. As a result, with all the respect due (and paid) to Irish music’s venerable 2,000-year-old tradition, tunes are always evolving (never set in stone!). And as they evolve, new titles, or nicknames, accrue to the pieces—often so many for a single tune that it’s impossible to keep track!

Mag Fhloinn says: “the deep connections that are to be found here in West Kerry—they're still to be found in certain places in Ireland, but I think the language is a huge advantage in terms of the key that unlocks a deeper knowledge of the landscape. “It just gives a broader perspective,” he says. Language also seems to unlock a deeper knowledge of self, itself. Nic Amhlaoibh acknowledged, “it saddens me that people don't understand how important a language is in terms of understanding where you come from, in terms of Irish identity. When you have a different word for something, a different way of describing something, it just opens up your brain to seeing things in so many different ways.”

And that openness of thought seems to attract those who think that way. Mag Fhloinn says, “the Dingle Peninsula tends to punch above its weight in terms of the amount of artists and writers and documentary-making, dancing, and singing. These are all things that add to the richness of the place and it attracts people of that mindset.”

Mí na Márta = Mí na Féile Pádraig

Anois go bhfuil daoine ag cuimhneamh ar a bheith ag cur na bprátaí is eile ní mór súil a chaitheamh ar an seanchas a bhaineann leis an tráth seo de bhliain. Tá a bhfírinne féin sna seanfhocail a bhaineann leis an gcuradóireacht agus an t-ullmhúchán chuichi:

Gach re lá go haoibhinn álainn ó Lá Fhéile Bríde go Lá Fhéile Pádraig.

Sa Mhárta is fearr an sioladóir.

Mura gcuirir san earrach ní bhainfir sa bhfómhar.

Ach is minic aimsir chruaidh, gaoth agus báisteach leis, ná bítear ag súil leo, sa Mhárta:

An Márta cruaidh gaofar agus an tAibreán bog braonach.

Chomh luaimneach leis an ngaoith Mhárta.

Is mo cor a chuireann lá Márta de.

Gach aon lochán lán le haghaidh an Mhárta.

Muna líona na Faoillí na fuarlaigh, líonfaidh an Márta go bruach iad.

Ta geallúint ann ó Naomh Pádraig afach, go mbeidh an aimsir ag dul i bhfeabhas as seo amach:

“Gach re lá go maith óm lá-sa amach,” arsa Bríd. “Agus gach lá go maith óm lá-sa amach,” arsa Pádraig, “agus leath mo lae-sa leis.”

Teanga amháin duine amháin. One person-one language

• Má tá teangacha éagsúla agat féin agus ag do pháirtí, d’fhéadfadh go n-oibreoidh an modh “teanga amháin duine amháin” chun tacú leis an ilteangachas nó an dátheangachas duit.

• If you and your partner have different languages, the one person-one language model for supporting multilingualism or bilingualism might work for you

• Mar shampla, más é an Ghaelainn do theanga agus Béarla teanga do pháirtí, labhraíonn tú Gaelainn le do leanbh agus labhraíonn do pháirtí Béarla leo. Cuir ceist ar éinne le Gaelainn i saol do linbh labhairt leo as Gaelainn!

• For example, if your language is Irish and your partner’s is English, you speak Irish to your child and your partner speaks English to them. Ask anyone with Irish in your child’s life to speak to them in Irish!

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

PICKLEBALL Congratulations to Castlegregory All Ireland Pickleball Champion, Debbie Quirke on her wonderful success winning Gold for Ireland in the European Pickleball Competition in Spain recently. This is a wonderful achievement, well done Debbie.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

LAMBING SEASON The lambing season has started and sheep farmers are working hard caring for mother ewes and lambs. We have in Camp a local entrepreneurial sheep farmer who has come up with a great idea for feeding his orphan lambs.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Jimmy Batt has discovered a new method and has spent time patiently training his lambs to feed from a specially devised bucket which keeps the milk warm. This is a great labour saving device. Well done Jimmy, go n-eiri an t-adh leat. God Bless all our flocks and the Farmers who care for them.

OBITUARY

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Deepest sympathy is extended to Claire Tracey O'Driscoll, Camp and all the family

Ní haon strainséar ach an oiread an bainisteoir, Billy Dennehy. Rugadh i dTrá Lí é, agus d'imir sé leis na Stacaigh agus le foireann mionúir na Ríochta, ar bhain sé bonn Chraobh na Mumhan leo, ach bhí sé le Dynamos agus Kingdom Boys sa sacar chomh maith sara bhfuair sé áit le Sunderland fad a bhí Mick McCarthy ina shaoiste ann.

Ar ais sa tsraith bhaile, chuir sé sceimhle ar chosantóirí agus ar thosaigh na bhfóirne eile ar feadh deich mbliana, go háirithe agus é ag imirt le Ruagairí na Seamróige agus le Cathair Chorcaí. Tá a fhios aige gur dúshlán mór atá roimh Kerry FC agus iad ag tabhairt faoin saol i Sraith na hÉireann. Ar seisean tar éís chreach na Gaillimhe, “nuair a leagtar muid, ní fhanaimid thíos.”

ábhar seo sílim. Pé scéal é, táim saghas imithe amú. An pointe ná an tuairim a bhí agam faoi Crufts ná mar rud sean-fhaiseanta, coimeádach, ardnósach a bhain le madraí íonphóraithe amháin (agus b’fhéidir daoine íonphóraithe…..ag magadh! *Ahem*).

Bhí mise agus m’fhear céile ag féachaint ar shearmanas gradaim mór le rá an tseachtain seo. ‘Réalta an ruda gléasta go snasta; cíortha agus stíleáilte go dtí an bpointe nach raibh ribe gruaige as áit nó ag bogadh fiú; ana-chuid daoine le "notions" acu ach ag ligint orthu nach raibh, agus tnúthán le gradam acu; na réalta gan fiú cead a bheith acu siúl ina n-aonar ar eagla go dtitfidís nó go ngortóidís iad féin – is ea, ag breathnú ar Crufts a bhíomar. Muna bhfuil madra agat nó suim iontu, tá cead agat léimt ar aghaidh go deireadh an ailt anois. ACH caillfidh tú amach ar cad atáim chun admháil…….tormáil druma le do thoil….MISE duine dse na daoine ardnósacha siúd, thuigeas faoi dheireadh an chláir! I slí áirithe. An rud atá ann ná ceapaim féin go bhfuil sé i bhfad níos fearr madra a shábháil mar pheata ná madra a cheannach. Déanaim saghas breithiúnas ar dhaoine a cheannaíonn ceann. Ní féidir muinín a bheith agat as an iliomad tógálaithe madraí, bíonn fadhbanna sláinte uafásacha ag ana-chuid dóibh (na madraí; ní na daoine, ach dá mba rud é go raibh an cumhacht agam….), agus, ag an am céanna go bhfuil daoine ag dul amach agus ag ceannach madraí nua - ag cur le fulaingt madraí síolraithe (fiú i ngan fhios dóibh féin) - tá na mílte eile ag fulaingt in ionaid mhadraí, ag iarradh grá a fháil agus a thabhairt, oibrithe deonacha spíonta traochta báite faoi na tonnta madraí ag teacht isteach gan stad – go háirithe tar éis Covid – agus gan pingin rua acu chun bia nó leigheas a thabhairt dos na hainmhithe bhochta, nó dóibh féin….agus an rialtas ag tabhairt airgid fós don tionscadal rásaíochta mhadraí; rud a chruthaíonn céatadán mór den bhfadhb seo.

Aaaaaaaaaagus tóg anáil Louise. ‘Sé soiléir conas mar a bhraithim faoin

Ach ag féachaint air aréir, bhí sé soiléir go bhfuil an comórtas tar éis cos a choinneáil leis an saol. An príomh-chúis go rabhamar ag breathnú air ná an aclaíocht. Is breá linn é. Bíonn siad chomh aclaí, chomh tapaidh, chomh dírithe, chomh cliste – agus iad siúd na traenálaithe! Ansan tá na madraí – agus iadsan dochreidte. Na tréithe céanna ar fad acu – ach an rud is mó atá soiléir ná an sult a bhaineann siad as. Na heireabaill ag croith chomh tapaidh bíonn sé deacair iad a fheiscint; iad ag tafann le sceitmíní, agus iad ag léimt chomh hard, bíonn cuma orthu go bhfuil siad ag eitilt. Ach chomh maith leis an rannóg sin, bhí rannóga eile ana-shuimiúla ann; madraí fionnadh leighis; “Laoch” na madraí; madraí na ngardaí; Scruffts (comórtas a ligeann d’aon saghas madra páirt a ghlacadh)… Bhí agallaimh idir na comórtaisí le haíonna éagsúla agus suimiúla; duine ó charthanacht a thugann aire do mhadraí oibre atá tar éis éirí as, saineolaithe madraí ag tabhairt comhairle faoi conas bualadh le madra nua don gcéad uair (mar shampla), tréidlia ag impí ar daoine gan póraíocht a dhéanamh le madra muna bhfuil tástáil déanta ar shláinte an ainmhithe…

Caithfidh mé a rá, bhí rud éigin ann do gach éinne, agus bhí – den gcuid is mó – sásamh agus sláinte na madraí ag croílár na hócáide; rud a chuir ionadh agus áthas orm. Is fiú súil a chaitheamh air uair éigin.

Ach fós an rud is mó domsa ná an aclaíocht. Baineann na madraí an oiread sin taitneamh as, d’fhéadfaimís go léir rud éigin a fhoghlaim uathu. Bheadh sé níos fearr dúinn ar fad, ar slí, gan bheith ag cuimhneamh ar cad atá thart, gan bheith buartha faoi cad atá romhainn, ach a bheith sáite sa rud atá á dhéanamh againn fé láthair, agus ag baint céad faoin gcéad tairbhe as….agus b’fhéidir ag tnúth le smailc beag ag an deireadh. So, go raibh maith agaibh, Crufts agus na madraí a bhaineann leis, as píosa craic agus ceacht luachmhar. Oscars mo thóin thiar!

Film Review - Creed III

Tom Ó Neachtain

Creed III is the newest instalment of the enduring Rocky franchise, with Michael B. Jordan once again in the title role of Adonis Creed. The film follows the newly retired Adonis, enjoying domestic bliss, until his childhood friend and boxing prodigy Damien is let out from prison. Damien has a chip on his shoulder and an eye on Adonis’ world-heavy-weight title.

Creed III sees Michael B. Jordan take up the director’s chair for the first time, as well as reprising the titular role. The film benefits hugely from his presence, in both his excellent screenpresence and his smart directorial eye. From a visual stand-point, most of the film is as slick and down-to-earth as its predecessors. However, whenever the characters enter the ring, B. Jordan’s true potential as a director is revealed. The boxing matches throughout are exceptionally shot, edited, and choreographed. There is a wonderful brutality to the sound-design, and the shifting power-dynamics between the fighters are conveyed through the choreography perfectly. This all leads to a final fight up there with any of the franchise’s most iconic brawls. It’s visually innovative, fist-pumping and heart-breaking in equal measure, and would stand as an excellent conclusion to this trilogy, if the films were to end here (although they probably won’t.)

As with his direction, the film benefits hugely from B. Jordan’s on-screen presence. He delivers the light comedy and emotional poignancy associated with the franchise perfectly. His clear dedication to the character that he’s played for nearly a decade shines through throughout. However, Jonathan Majors ends up stealing the show in the role of Damien. He manages to sell deep resentment and regret with expression alone, and his chemistry with B. Jordan is impeccable, gifting us one of the franchise’s all-time best villains. Sadly, this film marks the first film in franchise without the involvement of Sylvester Stallone, meaning his character Rocky Balboa is absent throughout. Previous Creeds benefitted hugely from his presence. His plotlines felt like a natural continuation of what came before, as well as allowing for a new protagonist in Adonis to take centre stage, and lead the franchise in a new direction. This film would have benefitted from his presence, as the main plotline feels quite aimless during the first half.

Creed III marks another solid entry in the series due to the strength of its performances and direction, and proves that the franchise is safe in Michael B. Jordan’s capable hands.

Thugamar Féin an Samhradh Linn le Mícheál Ó Ruairc

Coiscéim

‘Sa leabhar seo, an ceann is déanaí ón údar agus ón bhfile aithnidiúil, Mícheál Ó Ruairc, tugtar spléachadh dúinn ar na blianta a mhúnlaigh a mheon agus a dhearcadh ag tús na 1970’í. Tá cuntas corraitheach sa chéad chuid ar na blianta a chaith sé ag freastal ar an ollscoil i gCorcaigh agus é gafa idir Ollscoil Chorcaí agus Ollscoil an tSaoil - ag baint leannlusanna i gKent, ag obair ar an mbuildeáil i gcathair Chorcaí agus ar fheirm taobh le hospidéal síciatrach Our Lady’s ar Bhóthar na Laoi. Nochtann sé a anam dúinn agus angst an mhic léinn, an creideamh agus an grá éagmaise idir chamáin aige. Sa tarna cuid faighmid na samplaí is fearr dá chuid iriseoireachta agus léirmheastóireachta le dhá scór bliain anuas.’ - Coiscéim

Aimsir

Mheas gach aon duine go mbeadh bogadh ar an aimsir ach a mhalairt atá fíor. Más cuimhin leat an nath tús Márta mallaithe, deire Márta geal.

Ambaice go raibh tulcaí sneachtaigh ar fuaid na tíre agus gearradh sa ghaoth. Bhí barr na gcnoc ard agus caipíní sneachtaigh ortha ach sin a raibh, ach bhí an nimh sa tsúil ag an mbáisteach. Bhí fanacht sna botháin ar na ba ach bhí na huain bhochta fén síon. San idirlinn tá corraí maith ar bheithigh agus ba ach tá na caoire agus uain luath fós titithe.

Tátar ag caint fés na muilte gaoithe agus daoine ina gcoinne siúd atá meáite iad a cur in ancaire sa bhfarraige agus daoine ar an mór thír agus iad ag cur i gcoinne muilte gaoithe chomh maith. Ní shásódh Dia féin daoine áirithe. Is beag slí a bheadh ag teastáil ó lucht na muilte gaoithe.

Tátar ag caint anois ar shlite eile le fuinneamh a chur ar fáil go saor! Moill agus moill eile. Má ardaíonn an teocht beagán eile caith do chaipín le saol na cruinne.

Tanú

Tátar ag caint ar thanú a dhéanamh ar an líon fia atá in áiteanna áirithe ach níl aon éisteacht fachta ag na hiascairí go bhfuil róinte coitianta ag déanamh slad ar an mbradán a bhíonn ag teacht thar nais dtí na cuanta agus aibhnte aitiúla as a n-eascair siad, go mór mhór ceantar Baile na nGall. Stealladh mhagadh a bhuachaill.

Caid

Beidh Ciarraí ar a maidí ramha an deire seachtaine seo in aghaidh Roscommán go bhfuil feabhas maith tagtha ortha. Ní fada go mbeidh Jeaic ag beartú cé a bheidh ar an bhfoireann sna míosa rómhainn. Bhíos ag caint ar an ping pong ní ag Ciarrai amháin atá sé. Mar shampla, bheadh foireann mar Thír Eoghain agus furmhór an fhoirinn ag cosaint acu sa chás san dá bhfaigheadh an foireann seo againne an chaid a bhualadh suas go tapaigh, tharlódh go mbeadh an lá leo. Sa chás san beidh an chaid sall agus anall beidh na cosantoirí ag an bhfoireann agus breis ag cosaint. Tá siad seo chomh h-oilte le capaill ráis. Rud eile tá cupla foireann agus an cleas acu iad féin a chaitheamh ar an dtalamh le cur i gcéill go bhfaighfeadh siad cic saor. Bíonn daoine an- ghearánach mar a tugtar saor chic as ghníomh nach feall. Rud eile fós ná an íde a tugtar ortha siúd go mbíonn an chaid nó an sliotar acu. Buillí isteach sna heasnaíochta, lascaí agus glúin sa drom nó sa cheathrú. Tá an sort seo iompair in uachtar ag roinnt foirne go mór mhór sa Tuaisceart. Caid agus Iománaíocht a bíotar ag imirt agus ní dornálaíocht. Tá beirt inaice gach báide agus fear ar an dá thaobh líne gur cheart go mbeadh níos mó caidreamh acu leis an moltóir. Ag féachaint dom ar chluichí iomána an deire seachtaine mheasfá go bhfuil feabhas mór ar fhoireann Loch Garman, agus Thiobrad Árainn agus imreoirí caide Lú.

Faid is ná díobraíotar dtí an dara sraith Ciarraí, beidh Jeaic sásta.
