Saffron – the Yellow, Mellow Elixir for the Mind Irene Ní Fhlannúra Saffron has enjoyed some time under the microscope recently and researchers revealed the science behind the folklore and medicinal use of the World’s most expensive spice. These studies validate some of the oldest medical texts which have documented the use of saffron as medicine going back thousands of years. Even before Hippocrates and Galens wrote about saffron around 480BC, the Arabs had it all chalked down in the Islamic Traditional Medicine (ITM) tomes many centuries before them. Not surprising though, as saffron has a long history in Persian culture, cuisine and medicine. Today, Iran (formerly known as Persia) produces 90% of the total global supply of saffron and is regarded as the best quality in terms of aroma, flavour and potency as a medicinal agent. Other countries producing saffron nowadays include Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Britain and Greece but its origins remain in Middle Eastern lands and lore. Throughout its history, saffron has been revered not only in food preparation, but also as a fabric dye, in perfumes, in religious rituals as well as folk medicine. Many references in Islamic Traditional Medicine describe its use in the treatment of a wide range of ailments such as depression, anxiety, asthma, cardiovascular disease, eye disease and urogenital disorders. Women’s health issues are well-referenced with saffron being described as having an oxytocin-like effect. It was used to facilitate difficult labours and hasten the delivery of the placenta after childbirth. Also used for irregular periods and PMS. Similar uses for saffron are recorded in other traditional medicine practices from China, India and Europe. Today, with the benefit of good research, we can better understand how saffron can be effective for some of the above disorders. Clinical studies have evaluated optimum dosage and standardized extracts to maximise its potential as a therapeutic agent. As always, seek professional advice to use saffron safely and effectively, particularly in supplement format. Saffron comes from a cultivated, perennial crocus, known as Crocus Sativus. The sowing takes place in the months of June and July. This has to be done by hand and the sower must walk in a bent position for the length of each ridge. The harvest is ready between the end of October and beginning of November. During this short window, the blooms are picked between dawn and 10am to preserve the colour and aroma of the stigmas. Once the flowers are gathered, stigmas are separated and dried. Each bloom has only 3-4 stigmas and it takes about 85,000 flowers to yield one kilo of saffron. It is no wonder that it retails in the shops for around €15 per gram (€15,000 per kilo). This labour-intensive crop makes spud picking seem like a fun day out in comparison! One of the most well-known effects of saffron is its exhilarant and antidepressant activity which, according to ITM, leads to the sense of happiness and laughter. Once attributed to its flavour and fragrance, newer scientific evidence has identified a potent carotenoid, known as crocin (derived from crocus) which is the main active constituent. The positive effects of saffron in the improvement of depression symptoms have been established in animal and human studies showing that a daily dosage of 30mg saffron (stigmas and petals) are comparable to those of standard drugs such as imipramine and fluoxetine – commonly prescribed anti-depressants. Crocin has been shown to have positive effects on serotonin levels in mild to moderate depression and has also shown benefit to those who overeat, most likely due to the link between low serotonin levels and increased appetite. This information is not intended to replace medical advice from your doctor, a little reminder to always seek professional support for any health condition or if taking medication. In another study, anxiety levels were reduced by 50% when female subjects were exposed to the aroma of saffron for 20 minutes – about half the time 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

it takes to make a Spanish Paella, so lean over that pan and inhale ladies! Research into Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS) also noted that supplementation of 30mg saffron daily over three menstrual cycles reduced symptoms by more than half in 76% of the female subjects studied. Most participants saw great improvements in mood, cravings, insomnia and appetite. Viridian Nutrition, a reputable brand of ethical supplements have developed a formula of Magnesium, Vitamin B6 and Saffron specifically for PMS which may also help alleviate cramping, breast tenderness and pain associated with the monthly cycle. A word of caution for women – do not take supplemental saffron in pregnancy as high dosage may induce labour or cause bleeding. Saffron in its food state, however, when used correctly in recipes poses no harm to pregnant women. Much like the turmeric, investigations into the benefits of saffron is evolving and so far, have proven to offer great hope to many. On-going research is assessing its unique antioxidant content and its protective qualities on the linings of organs in the body. This type of study may lead to increased nutritional input for epithelial disorders, age-related macular disease, asthma and respiratory disease. Saffron spice is usually sold as strands (or threads) and is superior to its powdered form. It is red in colour but imparts a golden yellow hue to dishes. Thankfully, you only need a few threads of saffron in any dish – a paella for 8 people will use about a quarter gram (roughly 12 threads). It is best soaked in a little boiled water before adding it and the soak water to your dish. More is not better – too much saffron can leave a bitter taste and murky colour. Saffron can also be enjoyed in a tea infusion. Grind a few strands with a pinch of coconut sugar in a mortar and pestle. Add the crushed saffron mix to white or green tea (they are milder than black tea). For a truly comforting beverage try adding cinnamon, cardamom, rose petals, mint, ginger or lemon to this drink, allow to infuse for 8-10 minutes. Enjoy it warm for a real hug in a mug whenever you need one! Disperse use to prevent the creation of new tracks and campsites.

Avoid places where impacts are just beginning to show.

If camping: •

Protect water quality by camping at least 30m from lakes and streams.

Keep campsites small and discreet.

Aim to leave your campsite as you found it, or better.

5. Leave What You Find •

Respect property. For example, farming or forestry machinery, fences, stone walls etc. Leave gates as you find them (open or closed).

Preserve the past: examine - without damaging - archaeological structures, old walls and heritage artefacts e.g. holy wells, mine workings, monuments.

Conserve the present: leave rocks, flowers, plants, animals and all natural habitats as you find them. Fallen trees are a valuable wildlife habitat; do not remove or use for firewood.

Avoid introducing non-native plants and animals e.g. zebra mussels in rivers and lakes.

Do not build rock cairns, structures or shelters

6. Dispose of Waste Properly •

7. Minimise the Effects of Fire •

Fires can cause lasting impacts and be devastating to forests, natural habitats and farmland. Therefore, when camping use a lightweight stove for cooking.

Where fires are permitted: Use established fire rings, barbecues or create a mound fire.

Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand. Do not use growing vegetation for use as firewood.

Avoid burning plastics or other substances: which emit toxic fumes.

Kerry County Council personnal inform us that due to the constant misuse of litter bins in the Lower John Street area they have decided to remove the bins altogher. From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon

Lougher Patrick Forhan was 98 on Census night 1901 and spoke Irish only. His wife Catherine, 63, was recorded as a ‘Spinster’ – wool spinner probably. Patrick was born circa 1803 - the year of Robert Emmet’s rebellion and the year Britain declared war on France - and on Napoleon. Caherscullibeen John Grommell lived in Caherscullibeen. He was head of the family, a farmer, a widower and was aged 98. His son John, 50, was married to Kate, 45, and they had four children. Glantane (Annascaul area)

In this issue we continue with the theme of longevity – who were the longest-living people in West Kerry on the night of the 1901 Census which was recorded on 31 March? In the last issue we took 90 years of age as the stating point. In this issue we’re going up the scale to 100 and beyond, - plus, who were the youngest residents on Census night? Ballincolla Maurice Ferriter lived in Ballincolla. He was head of the family, a farmer aged 91. He could read and write and he signed the form. There were 15 people in the house on Census night. One of them was Mary Ferriter, 50, and she was recorded in the transcribed version of the hand-written census as ‘Daughter in Law’s Wife’? Inch East Eugene Farrell, a widower aged 92, lived in Inch East. There were two young girls in the house of 10 people. They were Ellie Farrel, 15, and her sister Johanna, 14, and were recorded as ‘Spinsters’. It’s unlikely they were spinsters in the generally accepted meaning of that word in those days and were probably wool spinners. Green Street Mary O’Connor lived in Green Street, Dingle, and she was a ‘Peace Officer’s Widow’ aged 92. She could read and write and spoke Irish and English. She had a servant named Mary O’Brien, 70. Gowlin (Lispole area) Michael Griffin lived in Gowlin and at age 93 he was head of the family. He and his wife Ellen, 50, had one son and four grandchildren. Gortadoo Hanna Griffin lived in Gortadoo. She was aged 93 and a widow. Her stated profession was ‘Nurse and Domestic Servant’. She was the aunt of Thomas Martin - the head of the house. Mullenaglemig (Dingle) Eugene Griffin, a farmer from Mullenaglemig, was also 93, a widower and head of the family. His son James, a farmer aged 45 was married to Hanora and they had eight children. Illauncaum, (Castlegregory area) Daniel Mahony from Illauncaum was aged 95, a widower and head of the household. He was a farmer as was his son Denis, 30, who was married to Ellen, 28. They were the only occupants of the house on Census night and all spoke Irish and English. Daniel was born circa 1806. That was the year Napoleon set up the Continental Blockade to stop the import of British goods into Europe. Sound familiar?

John Flahive lived in Glantane. He was a retired farmer aged 99. His wife Katie was 87 which made them the oldest married couple in West Kerry, from Camp to the Blaskets, on Census night 1901. Ballynana (near Gallarus) Ellen O’Shea lived in Ballynana. She was a widow, the head of the family and was aged 100. There is no mention of a son or daughter on the census form but there are two grandsons, one granddaughter and a daughterin-law listed on the form. Ellen was born circa 1800 - the year of the Act of Union which resulted in the abolition of the Irish Parliament. Ballycurrane (near Brandon Creek). There was no cheque from a president when Ellen O’Connor from Ballycurrane reached 100. Ellen was a widow. Her grandson Maurice, 21, was head of the family. There were three other grandchildren in the house but no mention of their parents on the census form. Reenconnell Thomas Griffin from Reenconnell took the longevity record for West Kerry in the 1901 Census. He was 103 which means he was born around 1798, another historic year in Irish history when a rebellion failed to establish an independent Irish Republic. Thomas was alive in three centuries. He was a widower and lived with his son James, 50, his daughter-in-law Kate, 45, and their six children. YOUNGEST IN 1901? This was a close call between two baby girls with the same first name who were born in the same week as the Census in March 1901 and they were almost neighbours. Glanfahan Ventry Johanna Kearney from Glanfahan, was five days old on Census night, 31 March 1901, the daughter of Patrick and Mary Kearney, both aged 35. Coumaleague Ventry Johanna Leahy was four days old on Census night 1901, the daughter of Coumaleague farmer John Leahy, 30, and his wife Hanora, 25. Johanna had one brother, Patrick, 4, and one sister, Mary, 2.

The Dingle Races - 1746 to 1912 Ted Creedon Don’t be fooled by the title of this article. It doesn’t claim to cover the history of the Dingle Races from the mid-eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. But it is an attempt to piece together early references to the races and the various venues, mainly, but not all, from old newspapers. The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland preserves a letter written by Lady Theodosia Crosbie of Ardfert to her sister Lady Mary Tighe in Dublin. The letter is headed ‘Dingle, August 30th, 1746’ and describes Lady Crosbie’s week-long visit to Dingle for ‘the famous race’ and ball nights. She stated she went to see ‘the only race that was worth seeing’. There were five horses in the event which was won by Dick Fitzgerald, ‘a brother of the Knight of Glyn’ (sic). Of course, it doesn’t mean that this race was one of the forerunners of the modern Dingle races but it can’t be ruled out either, especially as she described it as ‘the famous race’. No mention of a location for that meeting. (Special thanks to Tom Fox for the above material). The races were held on Tuesday, June 24 in 1806 according to Saunders’s News-Letter but no location given. There were five horses in the main race and they were: Whiskey owned by Mr. McGill, Flaxfeed owned by Lieut. Eagar, Dingle Lass owned by Capt. Hickson, Potatoes owned by Mr. Kenna and Bellows owned by Capt. Thompson. No further information. A brief note in the Kerry Evening Post of 1836 stated preparations were being made for the races at Ventry in the first week of September. The Dublin Evening Packet of September 9 1837 refers to the races at Ventry being organised by ‘some gentlemen of Dingle and its vicinity’. The Southern Reporter of August 22, 1865 told its readers that the Dingle Races would be held on the ‘ Dingle Strand’ on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 29/30, and that ‘The Maid of Beale’ was heading from Tralee to compete. But where was the ‘Dingle Strand’? Was it at Lough or Ventry? The Maid of Beale must have been the famous horse owned by the Fitzmaurice family in North Kerry. The Dingle Races were planned to be held on Ventry Strand on Tuesday and Wednesday August 27/28 in 1869, according to the Cork Examiner of July 5 that year. It stated the strand is ‘one of the most admirable race courses on the coast of Ireland’. The Dingle Races were planned to run on Ventry Strand on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9/10, in 1872, according to the Tralee Chronicle and Killarney Echo of that year. The expectation was that the races would be well attended ‘by the lovers of the turf in this town’ (Tralee), according to the paper. A full programme of races, trophies and prizes was included – but too extensive for this article. 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

In 1892 there was a large and ‘influential meeting’ held in Dingle regarding the races, according to the Kerry Evening Post of June 5 that year. It was decided to hold the races in August but no date was agreed. However, it was agreed that a proper course should be prepared – ‘probably at Ballintaggart’. In 1893 the Dingle Races were to be held on Ventry Strand on Tuesday/ Wednesday, September 5/6, according to the Kerry Evening Post. But it all changed again in 1894, 1895 and 1898 when the races were held in Milltown in August, according to the Post. The paper gushed about the splendid mile-long course at Milltown where the fences were ‘rather stiff’, it noted. The races were held at Ballintaggart in 1896, 1897 and 1899. The 1896 meeting was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8/ 9. There were some heavy showers on the Tuesday, according to the Kerry Evening Post. The 1897 meet was held on Wednesday and Thursday August 25/26 and was to be managed by a Mr. Dunbar of the Irish Racing Association. The 1899 races were held on Wednesday and Thursday August 16/17. A meeting was to be held in the Harbour Board Offices in Dingle on Saturday, May 13, 1905 with the intention of ‘reviving the races’, according to the Kerry Evening Post of May 8. It was stated that the races had not been run for three years. A new committee was formed and a second meeting was held on Saturday, May 27, where it was decided to hold the races at Ballintaggart on Wednesday and Thursday, July 5/6, with five races to be held on both days, according to the Post. The Kerryman of June 22, 1907, reported that a meeting was held ‘at the club’ (?) in June to decide on the best location for that year’s Dingle race meeting. Two options were suggested – the ‘old course at Ballintaggart’ or Beenbawn. Following an examination of both locations a few days later, and having met with the owners – Mr. Casey at Ballintaggart and Mr. Rayel at Beenbawn – it was decided to hold the races at Beenbawn on Wednesday and Thursday, August 21/22. The location was probably part of the lands between the village and the lighthouse. The Cork Examiner of July 16, 1910, carried a notice of that year’s Dingle meting which it described as -‘Ireland’s Premier Flapper Races’ to be held at Ballintaggart on Wednesday and Thursday, August 17/18. The Kerryman of August 17, 1912 printed an ad for the Dingle Races which it described as ‘ The Most Popular Independent Meeting in Ireland’, to be held at the ‘Ballintaggart Course’ on Wednesday and Thursday, August 28/29. The entrance fee was three pence and the committee promised to deal severely with non-paying trespassers. That gate-crashing tradition continued up to modern times. Plenty of material for a book on the races waiting to be collected.

le feiceáil. Ní raibh feidhmitheoir crua ann, le bata agus blas agus droim cosúil le rialóir, ag tabhairt amach. Ní raibh ann ach comhluadar deas, taithí nua, agus píosa craic. Gan dearmad a dhéanamh ar an aclaíocht féin! An corp (agus an intinn) a shíneadh i slí nua; saghas cosúil le pilates agus ióga measctha le chéile. Agus go léir as Gaolainn! D’fhreastalaíos ar an dara rang le fonn. Bhíos ag tnúth leis. An-taitneamhach ar fad. Agus caithfidh rud éigin a bheith, ar a laghad tar éis tamaill, má tá tú chun leanúint ar aghaidh leis. Agus má chloíos le mo sean-nósanna (“Is maith liom é seo; ní maith liom é sin, agus sin deireadh leis”) bheinn thíos leis. So, anois is arís, ‘cuma air go bhfuil sé níos fearr gan cloí le rud éigin, fiú má oibrigh sé duitse cheana. Seans go bhfuil rud ar intinn agat le triail le tamall. B’fhéidir go bhfuil eagla ort tabhairt faoi. Nó easpa muiníne ag cur bac ort. Nó fiú leisciúlacht! Is leithscéal chomh fiúntach é sin le na cinn eile. Ní bheidh fhios agat riamh muna léimeann tú isteach ann. Beidh an comhartha ceiste sin ann i gcónaí. Cuimhneoidh mé go deo ar m’aintín i mB.Á.C. agus í de shíor ag rá liom, “I wish I’d learned piano.” Bhí sí fós beo, deich méar fós aici agus í ar an dtaobh ceart den talamh. Níor thuigeas – agus nílim ag rá gur thaipíos gach deis nó thriaileas gach rud a bhí uaim. An malairt, agus d’fhoghlaimíos ón dtaithí sin. Agus ana-shásta nár éistíos leis an nguth aitheanta sin a chloisim go rialta, a dhéanann breithiúnas gan fianaise, an lá a dúradh liom “Ar mhaith leat teacht go ballet?”.

Nach bhfuil an t-ádh linn go bhfuilimid inár gcónaí in áit atá rogha chomh fairsing, flúirse againn d’imeachtaí agus caithimh aimsire. Bhíos á phlé seo le duine éigin cúpla lá ó shin agus cara acu i gConamara a bhí ag gearán faoin easpa rogha timpeall na dúichí sin. I gcomparáid le m’áit dhúchais (B.Á.C.), braithim bearna gníomhaíochtaí uaireanta, ach sin an Jeaicín arís ionam (Out! Out! Damn Jeaicín!) ag gobadh amach. Ní féidir dul tríd an irisleabhar áitiúil seo fiú, mar shampla amháin, gan a bheith báite le rudaí is féidir a bheith páirteach leo, cúrsaí is féidir freastal orthu, nó fiú teiripé de gach saghas a fháil. B’fhéidir nach mbíonn an méid céanna áisitheoirí ann, nó rogha chomh leathan de gach uile rud, ach ní h-aon drochrud é sin, agus FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out d’éinne nach bhfuil ar an eolas) uafásach ar leath den ndaonra. Bhí sé agamsa go h-olc ag fás aníos. Is minic a rachainn go ceithre ócáid laistigh d’oíche amháin agus mise sna fichidí. Bhí cáil agam i measc mo chairde ar fad mar chineál, “Duracell Bunny,” maidir le gníomhaíochtaí - agus ní maíomh é sin! Is féidir rogha ró-leathan a bheith ann uaireanta.

Searmanas thart. Táim ag imeacht anois chun mo chuid, “Plié,”s uafásacha, amaitéaracha a dhéanamh….agus seacláid a ithe ag an am céanna (mar a dúras – caithfidh sé a bheith taitneamhach!).

Ar aon nós, táim imithe amú; ar ais go himeachtaí áitiúla; tá cloiste agam ó roinnt tuismitheoirí le déanaí go bhfuil na leanaí ag dul ó champa samhraidh amháin go ceann eile i mbliana – agus iad an-sásta faoi (na tuismitheoirí, ar ndóigh…ha!). Bhíos fiú ag plé cúrsaí spóirt sa Phobalscoil le dalta ó thar lear atá ag freastal ann, agus dúirt sé liom gur féidir, “Track and Field,” a dhéanamh ann. Bhí áthas (agus faoiseamh) orm é sin a chlos mar tá sé tábhachtach rogha a bheith ann má tá suim agat i sport ach ní sa C.L.G. So, an pointe atá á dhéanamh agam (go mall) ná go bhfuil rogha leathan agus éagsúl go leor ar fáil, agus is maith an rud é sin leis an aimsir, “Samhrúil,” a fhaighmidne! Ar an ábhar sin, nuair a bhí mo dheirfiúr óg, thriail sí gach rud – rince, ceol, ealaíon, srl. Tháinig mé ar an bpianó nuair a bhíos seacht mbliana d’aois, agus b’shin sin. Chloíos leis. ‘Tuairim láidir agam faoi cad a thaitníonn, agus nach dtaitníonn liom. Ceann daingean b’fhéidir. Chick-lit. Spórt aonarach. Snagcheol le fonn saibhir agus binn – ní an stuif nua-aimseartha atá cosúil le fuaimchlár tranglam tráchta. N’fheadar fútsa. B’fhéidir go bhfuil tusa níos solúbtha, nó níos doghluaiste! Is dócha fé aois áirithe bíonn aithne mhaith againn orainn féin. So nuair a mholadh dom le déanaí ballet a thriailt, bhuel…..hahahahahahahaaa……ballet. Agus mise. No. Ní duine grástúil mé. Is fearr liom imeachtaí suaimhneacha nó bríomhara; ní rud sa lár mar atá ballet (i mo thuairim), a thógann neart smachta agus foighne. Níl an t-am agam a bheith foighneach. Má tá tú chun bogadh, cad ina thaobh nach ndéanfar tapaidh é agus é a bheith thart?! Cén fáth go gcuirfeá taithí ort féin a d’fhéadfadh a bheith pianmhar (de réir dealraimh) agus…. ahem…leadránach (dar liomsa!)? Ach de bharr easpa caithimh aimsire eile a bhí á dhéanamh agam i rith an tsamhraidh (agus fiosracht), thriaileas é. Uair amháin. Mar a dúras liom féin. T’fhios agat cad atá ag teacht….agus baineadh siar mé. Múinteoir réidh-cúiseach ach an-maith. Grúpa álainn. Foirgneamh aoibhinn (déanann an timpeallacht difríocht). Ní raibh tutu nó cocán ar bith le feiscint. Agus ceol galánta claisiceach draíochtúil; láidir nuair a bhí gá leis, agus séimh an chuid eile den am. Ní raibh ard-caighdeán ann. Ní raibh corp, “Rinceora,”

Meanwhile, the Division 3 opposition is Castlegregory; Dromid/Waterville; Kerins O’Rahillys/St Pat’s, Blennerville; and Annascaul/Lios Poil. Last Tuesday (August 2) they began their Division 3 campaign with a game in Tralee against Kerins O’Rahillys/St Pat’s, Blennerville (report next week). This Sunday they are at home to Castlegregory. MID KERRY MINORS: The Mid Kerry minors continued their good form in the county championship last week. They won their second Group 2 game last Tuesday week (July 26) when they overcame the challenge of Laune Rangers in Milltown by 1-15 to 0-9. Cromane were represented by Liam O’Neill, Darragh Crosby, and Jamie Casey. In the previous game, a win over West Kerry (5-10 to 0-8) on July 18, all three in addition to Jack McGrath and Tony Og Duffy were involved. The Mid Kerry minors completed their group phase of the county championship on Monday evening (August 1) with a game against South Kerry in Cahersiveen. Well done, great to see five Cromane lads involved. IMPORTANT - UNDERAGE TRAINING: Please note our new starting time of 10.30am for our underage training on Sundays. This was decided after a survey of parents and coaches involved. The new time is working well with the most important thing being that the children still come in their droves and enjoy the mornings with their coaches and friends. So, training every Sunday at 10.30am.

The Cromane senior footballers began their County Junior Football Championship campaign last Saturday in disappointing fashion after a three-point loss in Scartaglen.

FIXTURES:

Cromane were ahead for most of the game but when it came to crunch, in the last 5 minutes, it was the home side that got the vital scores.

Sunday, August 7 - Central Region Under-13 Division 2B (round 2): GGC v Ballymac B in Cromane at 12.30pm.

Cromane led 0-9 to 0-8 when Darren Houlihan swung over his sixth point of the day in the 54th minute. However, that was to be our last score as Scartaglen hit four unanswered points to take the win. Scartaglen’s lead point in the 58th minute was the first time they led during the game. Cromane will rue coughing up two good goal chances in a first half when they looked in control. We led by 0-5 to 0-2 after 18 minutes after Darren Houlihan converted a 45. This was added to three previous scores from Darren and a nice point from wing back Eanna Healy. At half time though Scartaglen had battled back to get within one, 0-5 to 0-4. Cromane again stretched their lead out to three in the first five minutes of the second half thanks to two frees from Darren and Sean O’Sullivan, 0-7 to 0-4. That was as good as it got as the home side finished stronger to take the opening round spoils. Group 1 of the county junior championship also includes Moyvane and Renard with games to come against both sides in August. Scorers: Darren Houlihan 0-6 (0-4 frees, 0-1 45), Sean O'Sullivan 0-2 frees, Eanna Healy 0-1. Team: Danny Healy; Liam Teahan, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Eanna Healy, Brice Dourieu, Cian Lyons; Donnchadh Walsh, Darrwn Houlihan; Shane Ahern, Jason O’Connor, Danny Shea; Darragh McKeefry, Sean O’Sullivan, Mikey Houlihan Subs: Cathal Crosby for S Ahern 40m, Finbar Casey for B Dourieu 45m.

Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Lotto: Sponsored by Almas Takeaway, Milltown

gave us a stadium tour.

The fortnightly club lotto draw took place on Tuesday, July 26th at the club grounds. There was no jackpot winner on this occasion. The numbers drawn were 1, 3, 22 and the bonus ball was 28.

After we left Pairc Ui Chaoimh, we travelled onward to Douglas GAA Club where the boys’ played games against the Douglas U-11 team before we were treated to tea, sandwiches and treats in their Wonderful indoor facilities. After more singing, that wouldn't have been out of place in Eurovision, we arrived back at Paddy Burke Memorial Park about 21:30, after having a wonderful day.

Lucky Dip winners were as follows: €50 - Brian O'Neill, Killarney, €50 - Bok My Chain, Cork, €25 - Catherine O'Connor, Castlemaine, €25 - Pat O'Connor, Firies, €25 - Margaret Harmon, Milltown, €25 - Norma O'Neill, Milltown Our next club lotto draw is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 8th at 8:00pm where the jackpot will be €12,600. Get your draw tickets or renew your yearly tickets online on Clubforce or get your tickets for the next draw from all the usual local outlets. Camp for Future Stars 2022: After a break of two years the Club is delighted to announce the return of our CAMP FOR FUTURE STARS for 2022 Offering four fantastic days packed with GAA Skills, games and loads of fun. Registration for the camp has moved on-line and can be accessed via Clubforce https://member.clubforce.com/memberships_cart_m.asp... With the Milltown/Castlemaine CUL Camp having sold out in two days; please register early as places are limited in each category. For any questions or queries, please contactIan Twiss: 087 252 1053 or Liam Doherty: 086 041 3593 Intermediate Club Football Championship: Round 1 Fixture Milltown/Castlemaine will begin their 2022 Intermediate Club Football Championship on Saturday evening, August 6th when they take on Glenflesk at 7:00pm in Fossa (Neutral Venue). Best wishes to the players and management involved. They are in a group with St Marys, Rathmore and Glenflesk. The top two after three rounds will advance to the knockout stages. Mid Kerry Junior Football League Final: Result Congratulations to the Milltown/Castlemaine Senior 'B' side and management who were crowned Mid Kerry Junior Football League Champions for 2022 last Wednesday evening following a 1-15 to 2-06 victory over reigning champions Laune Rangers at J P O'Sullivan Park, Killorglin. A well deserved success for these lads who have won 14 of their 16 competitive games so far this year across the County Senior Football League and the Mid Kerry Junior League. Man of the Match was Kieran McKenna and Captain David Leane accepted the plaque from the Mid Kerry Board after the final whistle. Keane's Supervalu County Minor Football Championship: Round 2 and 3 Results Well done to the Mid Kerry Minors, especially the 8 Milltown/Castlemaine players on the panel as they continued their 100% winning record in the Keane's Supervalu County Minor Football Championship. They defeated West Kerry in the opening round and have since gone on to defeat Laune Rangers and South Kerry over the past week to advance to the knockout stages of the competition. Mike Burke and Cathal Moriarty are also part of the management team so Milltown/Castlemaine GAA is very well represented on and off the field! U-11s: Munster Blitz and Central Region Round 1 Fixture Our U-11 footballers had a day of days last week when attending the Munster go-games blitz in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Cork.

On behalf of the management team, we want to thank the players for being so well behaved during such a long day, as always, they were a credit to their parents, guardians and the club. We would like to thank Flynn's coaches for providing the bus, Munster GAA (especially Pat O'Shea and Donal Daly) for organising the blitz in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. A special word of thanks for Donal Daly for scheduling us to play last in PUC, to facilitate the challenge games vs Douglas. We also want to thank everyone at Douglas GAA Club for the kindness and hospitality they showed from when we arrived at their ground until we left. Special mention to Steve Dwyer and his coaches for organising the games and providing much needed refreshments afterwards. We can't wait to return the favour in the not-too-distant future. No Kerry team was ever treated better in Cork. 👏👏 U-13s: Milltown/Castlemaine's U-13 Green and White sides will both continue training on Friday of this week at 6:00pm at the club grounds. Both sides were back in action last Sunday as they welcomed John Mitchels to the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown for Round 1 of the Kellihers Toyota Central Region. They have a Bye in Round 2 this weekend of the Central Region but on Saturday, August 6th they are going on a trip to Macroom to take on their U-13 teams in a challenge match. Enjoy the day out lads! GAA 4 All: Please note that GAA 4 All training sessions will now take place once weekly on a Wednesday evening (instead of Saturday morning) from 5:45pm - 6:30pm at the club grounds.

The journey began at 12:00 in Paddy Burke Memorial Park when we boarded a bus for Cork. Then we had an unscheduled stop in Killarney to meet a new arrival in Kingdom; and boy, did he get some welcome from the players.

After loads of singing on the bus, a huge cheer erupted when we saw Pairc Ui Chaoimh. We then had three keenly contested games on the main pitch against Ballyhooly (Cork), J.K. Brackens (Tipperary) and Ballylanders (Limerick) before Cork senior footballer Rory Maguire from Castlehaven

nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, neighbours, relatives and friends. Kieran was a lovely quiet and gentle man, very popular with his neighbours in Ashleigh Downs who will miss him very much. We will miss meeting up with Kieran at Camp Fair too, always taking photos with his camera and making videos down through the years. At his funeral Mass Fr. Mulvihill in his homily recalled Kierans working life in London where he was a bus driver and where he made lifelong friends. A sod of turf brought to the altar by his brother in law Jack brought back great memories of Kieran helping out on the bog.

Congratulations to Martha Farrell on her excellent interview on RTE1 News on Tuesday evening on the occasion of the visit of Minister Malcolm Noonan T.D to the Maharees.

Fr. Mulvihill concluded with an excerpt from Robert Louis Stephensons Poem, home is the Sailor, home from the sea, home is the Hunter, home from the hill. Kieran was laid to rest in Camp Cemetary, home to rest where he belongs.

Minister Noonan was there for the release of 500 Natterjack toadlets to the area which were captive reared in Fota Wildlife Park.

Kieran Conway, Ashleigh Downs, Tralee and late of Crossmolina, Co. Mayo passed to his eternal reward on Monday, 18th July last.

Down the centuries Castle Pattern on 15th August was a great day out in the village of Castlegregory. People came from all over the peninsula to meetup and enjoy the music, song and dance. The Mutton Pie is the traidtional dish of the day.

Dearly loved and sadly missed by his wife Mary Ellen (née Crean), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law,

See Martin Lynchs book which contains the ancient history of the Pattern.

OBITUARY

Film Review - Thor : Love and Thunder Tom Ó Neachtain

was sustaining a balance between the film’s often silly tone, with well-earned dramatic beats.

Thor : Love and Thunder is the fourth instalment of Marvel’s Thor franchise, with returning writer/ director Taika Waititi at the helm. The story follows the titular god, as he looks to re-kindle the lost love between himself and the newlysuperpowered Jane Foster, all-the-while trying to end the cosmic reign of terror led by the god-hating Gorr. To say the least, this film had a very tough act to follow. 2017’s Thor : Ragnarok was one of Marvel’s greatest commercial and critical hits, mainly due to Waititi’s witty writing and some truly inspired tonal departures from earlier entries in this franchise. One of Ragnarok’s greatest feats,

Sadly, it’s clear that Waititi had trouble recapturing that tonal balance in Love and Thunder, with much of the film playing out as a joke-filled, semi-parody of the usual MCU fare. This clashes awkwardly with the film’s emotional and stoic moments, which feel rushed through to make room for even more zany jokes and set-pieces. This isn’t helped by that fact that the film’s humour mostly misses the mark. It becomes clear early on, that the writers opted for quantity over quality in regards to the film’s jokes. Likewise, the pacing of the film’s narrative is problematic, with far too much time given to the opening act and set-up. To compensate, the film then rushes through its main quest, and by the end it feels as though not much of note had happened. Waititi employs some excellent stylistic choices throughout the film, helping to distract from the

story’s flaws. This film is vibrant visually, offering beautiful interstellar vistas, and truly original design work. This pairs well with a well-chosen sound-track, which imbues the film’s visuals and action-sequences with energy and kick. The film also features a standout villain in Gorr The God Butcher, played with superb malevolence by the always-stellar Christian Bale. Gorr’s memorable character design and daunting screen presence make up for his absence for large stretches of the film, and Bale’s full commitment to the material make his scenes more engaging and impactful than the rest of the film around them. While Thor : Love and Thunder boasts directorial flair and flashes of brilliance, its sloppy pacing and under-baked jokes mostly make it feel like a messy first draft of its own script.

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Peil Is trua nár éirigh le mná Chiarraí an bonn a bhaint ó imreoirí na Mí ar an nDomhnach seo caite. Thosnaíodar go diail nuair a ghnóthaigh Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh báide agus lean le dhá phointe. Ba léir go luath go raibh fuadar ná treascarófaí fé laochra na Mí. Marcáladh Louise ó thalamh agus aon imreoir maith eile ar fhoireann Chiarraí. Tá an-mholadh ag dul do fhoireann na Mí ach mar leathscéal ní dhein Ciarraí ró olc, óir ní fada ó thánadar ó roinn a dó. Is beag an mhaith a bheith leathscéalach ach tá moladh mór tuillte ag foireann Chiarraí a chuaigh chomh fada leis an gcraobh. Ní rabhadar maith a ndóthain ar an lá, ainneoin gach mí ádh d’eirigh le Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh a báide agus poinntí a ghnóthú. Tá an-chaighdeán ag baint le foireann Chiarraí agus níl uatha ach céim beag breise agus beidh craobhanna bainte ag Ciarraí. Is ag feabhsú a bheid do chraobh na bhliana seo chugainn. Táimíd buíoch as na sár theaspeáintisí agus an sólás a chuireabhair ar fail dúinn i rith na bliana. Nea-meabhair Ar m’anam ach go raghaidh turasoirí a thagann go hÉirinn in ait éigin eile má leanann an t-airgead mór atá á éileamh ag óstain agus tithe aitheanta aíochta. Níl bun ná barr €200 nó breis ar dhuine amháin as leaba agus bricfeast. Ó, tá sé beagán níos réasúnta in áiteanna éagsúla ach béarfar ar eirbeall orainn agus bí deimhin dó. Ní mhór duit leathmhilliún ar a laghad a bheith agat le tig a thógaint! Deirim, fastaoim. Is sa tithíocht agus airgead mór ar aíocht atá cúrsaí imithe thar cailc. Tá scoláirí ag iarraidh aíocht a aimsiú lasmuigh dos na cathracha mar nár mhór airgead Déamar a bheith acu le céim nó a leithéid a bhaint amach. Is ar aithféis don sort seo a cheart díriú agus srian a chur leis an gcosanairde gan chéill. Tá tionscail sa tír atá ag déanamh thar barr ach is ar bheartais gan aird atá an stát-chóras ag díriú. Is mó bliain ó fhágas an Comhairle Contae agus san am bhíomar ag moladh scéim chiallmhar muilte gaoithe a chur ar bun do lá na coise tinne. Tá an chaint chéanna ar siúl fós cé go bhfuil dul chinn bídeach déanta ag comhlachtaí príomháideacha agus mar bharr ar sin tá iarraitaisí fás crainn síor ghlas diúltaithe in áiteanna éagsúla. Fastaoim. Is féidir Higrigin Glas, a úsáid, nó muilte gaoithe a chur amach sa bhfarraige. Bí ag caint ar mhadra na n-ocht gcos, mar scéal. Breis úsáide a bhaint as sheamair dhearg! Sprioc a bheith le gluaisteáin agus innill éagsúla a bheith ar usáid petril agus diesel. Má tán tú ag gearán fé na mhion bheartais atá ag an saol glac leis nach fada i mblianta ná beir ábalta an práta a chur, tiocfaidh tuillte agus mór ghálaí agus róstadh, mar atá ag tarlú ins na tíortha teó ar fuaid an domhain. Dúisíodh duine éigin.

ní fios ná fath fé cad atá ar siúl ag Bord agus oifigigh an Údaráis. Níl aon mhilleán ortha san, tá siad ag déanamh mar atá réitithe dhóibh. Níl san ceart a Thaoisigh. Balbh Ní chuala an chuach, an traona na fiú an gabhairín reo i mbliana, seachas braith roimhis an mhadra rua agus madraí an bhaile atá ceangailte ag fógairt ag béal a ndorais féin. Tá bóithre sa cheantar agus tá buachalláin bhuí agus raitheannach ag leagadh a chéile ar na clathacha. Nimh don mbó, don gcapall agus don nduine. Mheasas go raibh dlí ann le cosc a chur ortha seo. Ná baineadh duine nó dream éigin mar an Chomhairle Contae an bonn ós na fáis ghránnna san. Measaim go raibh an buachallán cosctha ar thailte feirme. Ní bheadh sé ró dheacair iad a ghlanadh as ár radharc. Bás. Fuair Máire Uí Mháille Ní Dhúbhda bás ar an 31ú Úil in Óispidéal Ollscoile Thrá Lí. Bhí a fear céile Sam agus mac, Pádraig básaithe blianta beaga ó shoin. Méala mór a bás dá clann iníon, Áine, Máire, Margarita, Ellen, Geraldine, Siobhán agus Gráinne agus a clann mac, James, Breandán, Martin, Mícheál, John, Tomás agus Des. Bean mhín mhacánta, shuáilceach, b’ea Máire. Go soillsí Soillse na bhFlaitheas ar a caoin anam fáilteach. Cailleadh go tragóideach le déanaí Luke Mullally ó Bhréanainn. Méala mór a bhás dá mháthair agus a athair Paul, a dheartháir Michael, a dheirfiúr Jayne, a mháthair críonna Joyce agus a pháirtí Shauna, aintíní, uncailí, colceathracha agus a cháirde go léir. Comhbhrón ó chroí leo go léir. Filíocht. Gúim gach rath ar Cheaití de Bheildúin lena leabhar nua filíochta, ‘Agallamh leis an gCnoc’.Translating Brandon Mountain. Daonlaitheas don nGaeltacht. Tá sé curtha in úil don dTaoiseach gur gheall sé Údarás daonlaitheach mar a bhí ar dtúis dá mbeadh sé i gceannas. Bhain Fine Gael an vóta do mhuintir na Gaeltachta. Anois tá Cearta Sibhialta na Gaeltachta seo againne agus craobh Chonradh na Gaeilge ag cur in úil don dTaoiseach seasamh lena fhocal go mór mhór agus a théarma mar Thaoiseach ag ciorrú.
