With love and romance high on the agenda this month, a trip to your local grocery shop could be the recipe for love you are looking for! Of course, an active lifestyle, wholesome diet and self-confidence are the best routes to feeling sexy, but there a few good foods too that can give you the extra edge in the bedroom department!

Since ancient times men and women all over the world have been wolfing down copious amounts of aphrodisiac foods in the hope to boost their libido and enhance fertility. Named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, aphrodisiacs were originally used to cure impotence and infertility. Later, with the sexual revolution and less emphasis on producing offspring, the use of aphrodisiacs shifted to focus on libido, stamina and addressing impotence problems. Interestingly, many of the well-known aphrodisiac foods, such as oysters, asparagus, avocados and nuts gained their reputation because of their nutrient content rather than any physiological effect they may have on the male or female sex organs.

For men, zinc is vital to the prostate gland, a male reproductive organ whose main function is to secrete prostate fluid, one of the components of semen. The prostate contains the highest concentration of zinc in the body; it uses 10 times more zinc than any other organ. Zinc deficiency is commonly associated with prostate enlargement and researchers believe that a diet rich in zinc may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Zinc deficiency is widespread as over-farmed soil and food processing has depleted much of the zinc from our foods. Zinc is very much associated with protein foods such as beef, lamb, pumpkin seeds, poultry and seafood. Oysters, incidentally, are one of the richest sources of zinc so it is no wonder that they are at the top of the sexy food charts!

Chocolate is the undisputed food of love and as always, Mother Nature was right on the mark long before the man from Milk Tray came along. Dark chocolate (above 72% cocoa) and cocoa are one of the most heartfriendly treats available. For centuries chocolate was consumed as a drink rather than a bar and was hailed as a "cure all" because of its restorative and life sustaining properties. More recently, studies have confirmed that dark chocolate and cocoa support the heart and the entire circulatory system due to its powerful antioxidant content. Compounds found in dark chocolate and cocoa can lower blood pressure, dilate arteries for increased blood flow as well as reduce the stickiness in blood. Chocolate comes from the cacoa bean - the seed of the cacoa tree. As with all things in Nature - the health benefits of chocolate are greater in foods closest to their origin. The therapeutic effects of chocolate are greatly reduced in processing - the added sugar, milk solids, emulsifiers and other ingredients negate the health benefits of real chocolate. Cacoa bean powder and raw cacoa butter are easy to get nowdays and can be used in lots of delicious dessert recipes, savoury recipes or a warm bedtime beverage.

Frisky fruits include pineapples, pomegranates, raspberries and strawberries which are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for building collagen, a structural component of all tissues. No heart, blood vessel or any other organ could possibly function without collagen so for centuries, those

lacking lustre in the bedroom department were often told to go home and have a fruit salad! The reputed claims of bananas and asparagus have as much to do with their suggestive shape as their nutrient content. These are rich in potassium and B vitamins, vital for energy, stamina and regulating blood pressure. Vitamin E and essential fatty acids are crucial to hormone production and healthy circulation so make room in your love cupboard for raw almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, sunflower seeds and olives. If you are thinking of opening a nice bottle of red wine on Valentine’s, the kettle might be a better bet as the secret to a hot nightlife begins with a hot cup of tea. Green tea, to be exact, is rich in compounds called catechins, which boost desire by promoting blood flow to your nether regions. I kid you not! Catechins kill off free radicals that damage and inflame blood vessels, increasing their ability to transport blood. Catechins also cause blood vessel cells to release nitric oxide, dilating the blood vessels, leading to improved blood flow.

To knock the socks off your significant other, add aromatic flavours from garlic, ginger and basil to spice up more than your meal. Remarkably, celery, though not usually associated with romance, contains andresterone, which is the hormone that gives men a subtle smell, known to drive lovers wild! The aromas of almonds, rose and vanilla, often used in perfumes, mimic female pheromones and pair nicely with the dark chocolate. The old saying “the way to one’s heart is through the stomach” still rings true so throw on the apron, grab a spoon and cook up some real passion in the kitchen this Valentine's Day.

SLURRY SPREADING SEASON

Gardaí are urging road users to take extra care as slurry spreading season recommences this week. With the likely increase in the volume of agricultural vehicles using the roads, motorists are being asked never to be tempted to overtake in a dangerous manner. Drivers should also be on the lookout for farm machinery exiting fields and farm yards. Farmers are warned to be safety conscious too. If you become aware that the traffic is building up behind you, keep left when safe to do so in order to allow others to pass safely. Never use/hold your mobile phone while driving farm machinery on public roads.

Drivers of agricultural vehicles are also reminded of the following:

• Wash down all wheels regularly to avoid carrying mud and stones onto the public road.

• Be particularly careful when transporting material such as silage, slurry, sand and gravel so that it does not spill on the road and pose a risk to other road users.

• Do not overload trailers in a manner that would cause them to be unstable on the road.

• Look out for low bridges, overhanging trees, overhead cables and uneven road surfaces which could cause the load to shift and possibly overturn.

• The driving mirror must always provide an adequate view of the road and all agricultural vehicles must have proper working brakes on both tractor and trailer units. All agricultural vehicles must be fitted with lights, reflectors and indicators.

• Large farming vehicles should consider using an escort vehicle to warn other road users and ensure that tractors are driven at an appropriate speed for the road conditions.

• Never let an inexperienced driver use machinery.

• Ensure that equipment/machinery has been serviced properly and is in good working order.

• Be careful when using equipment which you may not have used for some time.

• Do not “risk it” – if you do not know how to use the equipment get someone to advise you or find out how to use it safely.

• Children should ALWAYS be supervised on farms.

• Visitors (including family relatives) may not be familiar with a farm environment and should be accompanied when out on the farm. Finally, when young people are being employed to operate machinery, make sure that they are properly trained, licenced, and insured, and that they have the maturity to work with such equipment, especially as evenings are dark at 6 0’Clock onwards.

ORGANIC FARMING APPLICATIONS TO BE ACCEPTED

All farmers who applied to participate in the Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) for 2023 are expected to receive letters in the coming weeks to confirm that they have been accepted into the scheme. The Organic Farming Scheme provides financial support to farmers to encourage production of organic foods. It is understood t that some 2,134 applications were submitted by the 9 December, 2022 deadline and that all of those farmers are set to be accepted. Notifications of acceptance into the scheme are scheduled to be sent out over the next four to six weeks. Farmers will have another opportunity to join the Organic Farming Scheme later in the year as it will open again for application in October 2023.

Earlier this week, Minister of State with responsibility for organics, said that increasing the number of organic farmers and developing markets for Irish produce will be among the key priorities for the Organic Strategy Forum this year. The government has set a target of 7.5% of land being farmed organically in Ireland by 2030 compared to 2% in 2021.

To be eligible for payment under the Organic Farming Scheme, farmers

must:

• Produce livestock and crop products according to European Union organic standards;

• Complete an approved training course;

• Farm and manage the land included in the application;

• Register with, and be approved as, an organic operator by a private inspection body;

• Have a minimum farm area of 3ha – except for horticultural producers where the minimum farm area is ha.

Partial conversion of the farm to organic farming is allowed:

• If both organic and conventional crops are to be produced, different species of plant, or different varieties that can be easily differentiated at all stages of growth and production, must be used;

• If both organic and conventional livestock are to be produced, different species must be involved.

HERD MANAGEMENT: GETTING STOCK READY FOR TURN-OUT

There is a large volume of grass in paddocks around the country, but getting the weather to graze it is now the challenge. January has been a mixed bag weather-wise - wet, mild, cold, icy and snowy - yet even with ground conditions delicate at present, thoughts are turning to spring grazing plans. There is a large volume of grass in paddocks around the country, but getting the weather to graze it is now the challenge. Some dairy herds have seen a few hours of grass in the last week as and where conditions allowed. Apart from reducing production costs, early grazing also makes more land available for slurry application which is posing a problem for many.

Early grazing also improves the quality of grass swards in the next rotation. Always aim to introduce fresh calvers to grass slowly. A few hours the first day in the afternoon and gradually increase the time each day until they are out between morning and evening milkings. This process should happen over a period of days so that cows can get used to grazing again. Remember that it takes the rumen a full 21 days to adjust fully to a new ingredient and a change in diet. Keeping intakes up will aid the cows' recovery postcalving and drive milk quantity and quality, along with holding condition and a return to cycling.

As is the norm, turn-out has traditionally been later on beef farms than on dairy farms. Generally, when a beef farm turns out stock, sheds are emptied with the intention that they will not be going back indoors until the following autumn. Some will have the option to let calves out by day from creep areas to help them get used to grazing before full turn-out. In general, early to mid-March is the most common turn-out time on beef farms, but this spring, with the amount of grass in paddocks, it really will be worth considering a slightly earlier turn if ground conditions allow.

If covers get too heavy, there is the potential to lose a lot of grass in the first grazing. Suckler cows with calves at foot might be the ones to turn out first as it will help cows to start cycling, and once it doesn’t get too wet or cold, calves will be less likely to pick up disease outdoors.

Replacement heifers are also a good group to get out early as it will help them to come cycling and show stronger signs of heat when outdoors in advance of breeding. There is always so much to do around the farm before stock can get to grass. Make sure water troughs are working and clean, setting up and checking electric fences, gates, ditches, fallen trees - the list goes on. All need to be sorted and made ready for the year ahead. It’s hard to get around to everything while you are managing stock indoors.

Do you have a minimum weight for your beef and dairy breeding heifers? It should relate to the size of your mature cows. Height and frame growth are more important than weight.

Short fat heifers are no good to you! Most beef and dairy heifers did quite well on grass last year and were housed in great order. It would be a good idea to separate out the smaller heifers intended for the bull now. You can then increase the feeding level to them now and keep them as a separate group while in the shed and once out to grass for a while before you commence breeding. By doing this, you can feed additional concentrates to the ones playing catch up right up to breeding to achieve target breeding weights. Resist the temptation to totally eliminate concentrates in the weeks before turn-out, dry matter intakes will drop, and so too will animal

performance. Grow them when they are young as this is when the gain is cheapest. Any significant changes to the diet leading up to breeding can hit the expression of heat and conception rates significantly.

LANDOWNERS URGED TO CUT HEDGES AHEAD OF DEADLINE

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) are calling on landowners to cut their hedges before the deadline of March 1, to ensure they are not causing a potentially serious road safety hazard. Overgrown hedgerows and roadside verges can result in road fatalities and serious injury collisions, according to the two associations. Properly maintained hedges also protect vulnerable road users who are not forced onto the road by overgrown hedges.

It also affords motorists a clear view of what is in front of them or around a bend, especially on local rural roads in the case of sightlines at junctions or obstructions to road signs. In accordance with the Wildlife Act, it is an offence to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated or growing in any hedge or ditch, between March 1 and August 31. There are some exceptions to this, including if there are grounds to act for road safety reasons.

Local authorities can either take direct action themselves or serve a notice on the landowner to do something in such instances. Landowners across the country need to be aware of the impact that overgrown hedgerows can have on other road users. They can cause a road safety hazard that could potentially result in loss of life or serious injury to another member of your community. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and it is important that landowners remain alert and take accountability for maintaining hedgerows. We can make our roads a safer place if we all play our role and take personal responsibility for what happens on the roads. Local authorities have an obligation to ensure roadside verges are maintained and that local road safety issues should be prioritised, whilst also recognising the commitments under directives to preserve hedgerows and promote biodiversity. Equally, landowners and anyone living along the roadside has a responsibility to check that hedges or trees on their property are not causing a road safety hazard.

The 1911 Census of Ireland was taken on Sunday April 2. In this issue we’re going to feature people, from Camp to the Blasket Islands, who were recorded as having been born overseas.

Bailey, Lucy Ellen, 30, lived in Farran with her husband Thomas, 35, and their three daughters. She was born in Australia. Very unusual to read about someone coming here from Australia over a hundred years ago – usually the opposite. Her husband was the ‘Station Master’ in Dingle.

O’Leary, Patrick, 61, lived on Upper Main Street and his occupation was ‘Parish Priest’. He was born in Alderney in the Channel Islands.

Moore, Mary Frances, 21, was a visitor to the house above on Census night and she was born in Demerara, on the north coast of South America, now part of Guyana.

Sullivan, Mary, 55 and a widow, lived in Flemingstown with her three daughters and one son. She was born in ‘U. S. America’.

Curran, Thomas, 6, lived in Gortnanooran, Ballinvoher, with his parents James, 39, and Mary, 36. Thomas was born in ‘U. S. America’.

Ashe, Michael, 40, lived in Annagap, with his wife Julia, 38, and their seven children. Michael was born in ‘New York’ and was a ‘National Teacher’.

Moriarty, Percy John, 15, lived in Gurteen North, Ballynacourty, and he was born in ‘London’. His father, Thomas, 53, was a ‘Retired Police Constable’. No mention of a wife on the census form.

O’Connor, Michael, 18, lived in Fahamore, Castlegregory. He was a ‘Carpenter’ and was born in ‘America’.

Spillane, Minnie, 25, also lived in Fahamore with her two children. She was born in ‘America’ and was a ‘House Keeper’. Her brother-in-law Thomas Spillane, 69, was a publican. No mention of a husband on the form.

Sullivan, Johanna, 6, was one of two people in a house in Fahamore on Census night. She was born in ‘America’. The other person was her grandfather, John Kennedy, 76.

Egan, Eugene, 8, was a visitor to a house in Farrantaun, Castlegregory and he was born in ‘United States’. There was no other Egan in the house on Census night.

Sullivan, John, 9, was recorded in the home of his uncle, Thomas Hennessy, 36, in Kilshannig. John was born in ‘America’.

Kennedy, Mary, 40 and a widow also lived in Kilshannig with her five children and she was born in ‘Holyoak, U.S.A’.

Hoare, Patrick, 59, a farmer in Maherabeg, was born in America.

O’Connor, Loretto, 11, lived in Castlegregory with her aunt, Bridget Coakley, 28 and single who was a ‘Shop Keeper’. Loretto was born in ‘U.S.A’.

Brosnan, Thomas, 21 and single, lived in the home of his uncle, John Brosnan, 57, a ‘Blacksmith’ in Castlegregory. Thomas was born in the ‘U.S.A.’.

O’Neill, Vincent, 7, was recorded in the home of Michael O’Neill, 70, in Castlegregory. Vincent was born in ‘Rhode Island America’. Surprising to see so many children born in America and no mention of parents.

O’Sullivan, Jeremiah, 49, was a ‘Wool Weaver’ in Castlegregory and he was born in the ‘U.S.A.’.

Walsh, Hannie, 11, was a ‘Servant’ in the home of Patrick, 31, and Hannoria, 31, O’Connor in Faha, Cloghane. She was born in England.

Begley, Helen, 8, lived in Ballydavid with her parents, Michael, 38 and a ‘Publican’, and Margaret, 33, plus her three siblings. She was born in ‘Mass, U.S.A’.

Clifford, Margaret, 8, lived in Puckisland, Minard, with her parents James 37, and Kate, 38. She was born in ‘Wales’.

Moriarty, David, 12, lived in the home of Sarah Moriarty, 45 single and a ‘Publican’ in Annascaul. He was born in ‘U.S.A America’.

Sheehy, Annie, 9, lived in Knockglass Beg with her uncle, James Fitzgerald, 35, and his wife Ellen, 30. Annie was born in ‘America’.

Kane, Margaret, 46, lived in Ballinknockane, Knockglass and she was born in ‘America’. She was married to John Kane, 50 and a farmer. There were four step-children named Deane in the home.

O’Sullivan, Robert, 59, and his wife Catherine, 56, lived in Holy Ground, Dingle, They had been married for 37 years and had 10 children – 8 were still living. Three of them, Mary Frances, 21, Margaret, 18, and Hannah, 12, lived with them and had been born in ‘America’. No info on the other five children. Robert was a ‘Victualler’.

Smith, Michael, 13, was living in the home of his grandparents John Begley, 82, and his wife Ellen, 73, in Ballycanneen. Michael was born in America. Logue, Thomas, 33, was a ‘Tailor’ in Cloghane and he was married to Johanna, 34. The couple had four children. Thomas was born in ‘U.S.A’. Lynch, Joseph, 20, was a servant on the farm of Thomas Brick, 69, of Ballyguin, Cloghane. He was born in ‘America’.

Daly, Kate, 74, lived on the Great Blasket Island and she was married to Maurice Daly, 84. They had been married for 54 years and their union had produced twelve children – nine of whom were still living. Kate was born in ‘United States’. Aged 74 in 1911 means she was born in America around 1837, eight years before the Great Famine.

Tom Crean & Tábhacht Na Mara/ Tom Crean & The Importance of The Sea is the title of a small exhibition that is being held in Dingle Library throughout February. Photographs, maps and information about Annascaul native,Tom Crean and both the Scott and Shackelton Antarctic expeditions on which he served in the early 20th century. A wide range of books , for both adults and children on these topics and the marine life of Ireland in general are available to borrow Colouring & Activity books on Exploring Our Ocean and the RV Tom Crean activity book have been generously donated by Foras Na Mara/Marine Institute of Ireland and there will be competitions for children.

A framed 2011 Admiralty map for both Dingle & Ventry harbours and The Blasket Islands will also be on permanent display in the library.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Result: Sunday 29th January: Premier A: Killarney Celtic FC A 2-0 Castlegregory Celtic FC A. Despite a superb defensive effort from our lads, 2 late goals for Killarney Celtic meant all 3 points went to the home side. However, up until 70 minutes Castle frustrated the home side and restricted them to long range efforts and when needed Eoin Kennedy was up to the task in the Castle goals. Playing on the counter, Castle created a number of openings and at 0-0 had a very strong claim for a penalty waved away when Jack Shannon was upended in the box. The tide turned for the home side on 70 minutes when a sliced cross looped into the Castle net and a second was added in injury time to put the game to bed.Overall, with several players missing and against a fantastic team that will line out in the quarter finals of the FAI cup in the next week or so, it was a rousing performance against and one that players and management can be very proud of despite the result.

Mary & Paud Evans & family, together with the extended Galvin and Evans families, friends and neighbours, wish to thank everybody who attended and supported our Christmas Fair Fundraiser on 26th November 2022.

A total of €14,006 has now being collected, and has been divided equally between the Kerry Cancer Support Group and the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

Camphill Dingle Update.

Happy New Year to all, Camphill Dingle would firstly like to thank the local community and beyond for their continuous support to our community. The generosity of people and business is astonishing. We are truly grateful.

The start of a new year always brings around new resolutions and planning for the year ahead, we here in Camphill Community Dingle are no different. We are busy making plans for the year with our community members, day attendees and staff. Already we have some exciting projects in the pipeline which we are eager to rollout. We will be sure to keep you updated as plans develop.

The Farm is preparing for some new arrivals that we are eagerly anticipating this spring. We are busy getting space ready for this and making sure we are well prepared for the arrival of these little ones. We are confident that we will rise to the challenge and succeed in these endeavours. All the farmers are carefully watching the expectant mothers and excited for the busy spring.

The Garden as some of you might know has not had the attention that it deserves during 2021 and into early 2022. Thankfully in 2022, we had the fantastic support of two local volunteers, Betsie and Ailise that really got stuck into the garden and started to bring it back to life. Without their hard work and dedication, it would not have been possible, so for this we are very grateful. It is our hope to continue this into 2023 and to restore it back to its rightful state and beauty.

The weavery has been trialling out some new products, ideas, designs, and skills; Tote bags, purses and dog bandanas have all been on the agenda and honestly the outcomes so far have been fantastic. The weavers seem to be really enjoying this stretch in ingenuity and have been working together getting their creative juices flowing.

In 2022 our staff team in Tearmann an tSolais residential house team grew as we welcomed new team members throughout the year, we also welcomed Johanna Hudson in the fall as our new Person in Charge of the community.

Now into 2023 we continue to grow and currently have some open Sonas Day Service positions for Programme facilitators and Programme Assistants. The family of the late Eamon Houlihan would like to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all those who helped and supported us during his illness and funeral.

Special thanks to the staff of Dinish ward in University Hospital Tralee. Especially Doctor Mary Buckley and Doctor Helena Moore. We would like to give special thanks to all the staff in Dingle Community Hospital which due to the professionalism and loving tender care, his final days were made so much more comfortable. We are very grateful to Dr Conor Brosnan and the staff in Dingle Medical Centre.

Thank you to Father Kiely for saying the funeral mass. Thank you to Áine Leahy for singing. Many thanks to Donal Connor Undertakers for his professionalism.

A special word of thanks to all the neighbours and friends who visited our home and brought food and refreshments and supported us in so many ways. Our wish would be to thank everyone individually, however we trust this acknowledgement will be accepted by all as a token of our deep thanks, gratitude and appreciation. What's Happening in Dingle Hub?

On Thursday 18th January the final event of Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe / A Creative Imagining was held in Ionad an Bhlascaóid Mhóir. Voices from the Field / Guthanna ón nGort , is a series of short films by Lisa Fingleton reflecting the experiences of ten farming families from the Dingle peninsula who took part in this Creative Climate project.

Over the last year, Lisa spent many hours working closely with the farmers to creatively explore climate change and biodiversity loss. These films drew on the stories and experiences of the families. They shared their strong connection to the land and their eagerness to find new ways to address climate change. The films gave a unique insight into the challenges facing the farming community and the ways they are trying to diversify.

Soup with character!

A good soup is hard to beat. Soup is easy to make, but remember it still is all about flavour. Take a little time making the base, add the main flavour and use something like potato to give it a smooth body and blend it together. Finally, you get to garnish it and bring it to a new level. Now you have a bowl of full of great flavour.

In this case we take the humble cauliflower and give it some character by roasting it to bring out some sweetness and a give it beautiful roasted nutty flavour. It will be crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Mix this with the slowly cooked base of onion, garlic, thyme and leek and now you have a layer of flavour that will make you reach for the second bowl. If you are not a fan of blue cheese, leave it out and maybe add some nutmeg instead.

Serves 6

Ingredients

2 heads of cauliflower, leaves removed and cauliflower cut into medium

size pieces

oil

knob of butter,

1 large onion, diced,

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

handful of thyme leaves

1 leek, washed and chopped (only use the white part)

4-5 medium sized potatoes, peeled and diced

600ml-800ml stock (use vegetable or chicken)

200ml cream

200g blue cheese

handful of flat parsley

Method

Preheat the oven to 180ºC

Put the cauliflower in a bowl, add some oil and mix well to coat. Add some salt and pepper, spread this evenly on a tray and place in the oven. Allow this to roast for about 25 minutes. Meanwhile, put a pot on over a low heat, add a little oil and some butter. Add the onion, garlic and thyme leaves and leeks. Season with a little salt. Cook this slowly for about 5 minutes or so. Stir it every now and then. Add the diced potatoes and cover with stock. Once the cauliflower has roasted, remove it from the oven and add it to the pot. You may need to top up the stock. Make sure everything is covered with the stock. Cook for another few minutes, check that the potatoes are cooked. Add the cream and some salt and pepper.

Blend the mixture while it is hot. Bring it to a smooth puree. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

Divide this between 6 bowls. Crumble blue cheese on top. Add a little parsley and serve.

Creative Communities Grants Scheme 2023

Creative Ireland Kerry, at Kerry County Council’s Arts Office, is pleased to announce that applications for the Creative Communities Grants Scheme 2023 are now being accepted.

The Creative Ireland Kerry Programme is a collaboration between Creative Ireland and Kerry County Council. The vision of the Creative Ireland Programme 2023–2027 is to mainstream creativity in the life of the nation so that individually and collectively, in our personal lives and in our institutions, we can realise our full creative potential thereby promoting individual, community and national wellbeing.

The Creative Communities Grants Scheme is a part of the upcoming 2023–2027 Culture & Creativity Strategy for Kerry, informed by public consultation in 2022. The focus of the scheme is to enable creativity in every community and so applications are welcome from communities, creative practitioners and organisations for community-rooted projects that reflect this. Applications must ensure a significant degree of community participation, impact and engagement. The community must benefit from the project, which must be creative in nature.

The application form and guidelines are available now in the ‘Forms/ Funding’ section of the Arts Office website at www.arts.kerrycoco.ie. The deadline for submission of applications is 1 p.m. on Tuesday 28 February.

For anyone interested in finding out more, there will be a free, onehour information session online. This will be facilitated by Kerry County Council’s Arts Officer / Creative Ireland Co-ordinator and will take place on Tuesday 7 February, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Interested individuals or groups should register in advance by emailing the Arts Office on arts@kerrycoco.ie, indicating whether they are a creative practitioner, community group, arts venue etc. FAQs will be made available online after the session, for anyone unavailable to attend.

Annascaul Historical Society

Milk Cans and Ogham Stones – Walking through Annascaul’s past this Bank Holiday Monday

Annascaul Historical Society invite you to join them on a guided walk through the countryside around the village on Bank Holiday Monday, the 6th of February.

Join us to learn about the days of the old creamery and bygone farming practices, the ancient burial ground at Rathduff, the priest who won the pools, and much else besides.

Registration will be at Hanafin’s Bar on Annascaul’s Main Street from 11.00 a.m, with the walk beginning at 11.30. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family. The walk with its many information points should take about two hours.

The walk will proceed east from the village, leaving the main road to explore Ballyandreen, Rathduff and Flemingstown before returning to the village.

Annascaul Historical Society would like to thank the many people who have generously joined us on our walks and contributed stories, poems and even songs! The money raised has contributed to the cost of completing the inscribed Coiscéim na Staire flagstones being placed in the village footpath. These will mark, with text and images, the locations of the various trades and activities of the village.

This is part of the upgrade of the N86: the historical society are working in conjunction with the National Road Design Office and with the help of South Kerry Development Partnership Leader funding.

Community Welcome for the 'Dingle Ukrainians'

There will be a belated opportunity on Friday February 3rd to welcome the recently arrived ‘Dingle Ukrainians’. On Friday evening at 5pm to 6.30, there will be tea and snacks in the Skellig Hotel ballroom, a few tunes, a chance to get to know our guests, and share some information about our part of the world with them.

This is going to be an informal event aimed at breaking down barriers, and maybe helping Ukrainians integrate better into our community, and offer practical help or opportunities while they are here.

Brigid O'Connor

ST. BRIGID'S DAY St. Brigid, Female Patron Saint of Ireland whose feast day falls on 1st February, Lá Fhéile Bríde will have a new Bank Holiday in her name on Monday 6th February. Born around AD 450, she had a long, productive and eventful life. She set up monasteries around Ireland, of which Kildare was one of the largest, with a hospital, scriptorium and farm. As Abbess of Kildare she managed monastery farms and thousands of nuns. She was ordained bishop. She was a master brewer of ale. The early Christian saint is seen as an early feminist, and has long been inspirational. The tradition of making Brigid's Crosses from rushes still exists in rural Ireland and often they are placed over the door of the outhouses in the belief that St. Brigid will ward off evil. There are many stories about Brigid and her generosity to the poor.

BURNS NIGHT On Friday night the literati of Camp and friends celebrated Burns night at the Railway Tavern, Camp. After a break of 3 years or so, Liam O'Regan and Brendan Kennelly decided to revive the event. Burns Night commemorates the birth of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. The traditional Scottish dish of the night, Haggis, Tatties and Neeps was served up in style, led by a symphony of music. George Edwards ably recited local poetry from the pen of Paddy Daly and Debbie O'Connor and the poet Robbie Burns would be pleased with the wonderful rendition and poetic expression of his work on the night. Toasts were made to absent friends Mike O'Neill and Seamus O'Donnell, contributors and supporters over the years. RIP. Thanks to Ann, Eoghan and Tracy, The Railway Tavern for hosting the event. Go mbeirimid beo ar an am seo arís.

MUNSTER RUGBY A great win for the Ladies Munster Rugby over Connaught at the weekend, retaining the Womens Women’s Interprovincial Championship title. We are all very proud of local Munster Rugby player, Emily O'Regan, Upper Camp. Congratulations all, well done Emily.

ANNASCAUL LADIES FOOTBALL Congratulations to Orlagh Clifford, Upper Camp who was selected on the Kerry Minor Panel for the 2023 season. Well done Orlagh.

OBITUARIES

Pauline Duffy, Ballinknockane, Camp, passed away peacefully on the 15th January, in the wonderful care of Aperee Living Camp.

Pauline was deeply religious and a devout Catholic all of her life. She rang the Angelus bell in Camp Church for many years and spent her time praying for all of us, particularly in times of need.

Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill in his homily said, Pauline was a Camp woman, who was very proud to be from Camp and knew everything about Camp. And that was very true.

And she was very fond of her relatives, her neighbours and her friends and in turn everybody loved her too, a warm and caring person, we will not see the likes of her again, "Ni bheidh a leitheid aris ann" bears really true of Pauline, Rest In Peace.

Pauline was born into a railway family who had close ties with the Tralee Dingle Railway line. Her Grand Uncle Mick Griffin's quick thinking saved an almost certain second accident when he ran along the line and stopped an oncoming train, after the Dingle Train had plunged off the bridge into the Curradubh river, after going out of control coming down the steep slopes of Gleann na nGealt.

That happened in 1893 and stories of the tragic accident are recalled in the locality to this present day. Mick Griffin was a Guard on the Tralee Dingle Railway line.

Sean Mulcahy, Lisnagree and native of Garrahies, Camp died peacefully at home on 19th January, surrounded by his loving family in the excellent care of the Palliative Care Team and Home Help Team that looked after Seán so well.

Sean was a fine footballer in his youth and supported and followed the Kerry team all of his life.

Sean's son Michael in his lovely tribute to his father at his funeral Mass told

a few funny stories of Sean's trips to Dublin and Croke Park and indeed the happenings at local matches playing with Camp in the 1950’s.

Michael, a successful Playwright, Author and man of words himself, aptly choose a quote from Shakespeare, Hamlet, to bid farewell to his fatherGoodnight sweet prince

And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Sean was laid to rest in Killiney, Castlegregory following requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill. A red and green Camp football jersey from the 1950’s was draped across Seans coffin on the way to his final resting place in Killiney, a fitting tribute to him.

Rest In Peace, Sean, a lovely gentleman, highly regarded by everybody who knew him in life.

Hannah O'Shea nee Herlihy, York Terrace, Killarney, late of Cricklewood, London and native of Kielduff, Annascaul passed away peacefully recently in her 107th year.

A great age and an amazing woman, interested in everything and everybody right up to the end of her long life.

Born and raised on a farm in Annascaul, Hannah later emigrated to London where she met and married a Castlegregory man, Gene O'Shea.

Hannah and Gene had a boarding house in Cricklewood where Hannah warmly welcomed many young Irish starting off in London. In her final years, Hannah came back home to Killarney to end her days happily amongst family and friends.

Sympathy is extended to her sons JJ and Michael and daughter Maureen and to the extended Herlihy family, Camp and O Shea family, Castlegregory. Hannahs husband Gene and son Eugene predeceased her. R.I.P.

READERS CHOICE. Kerry and Dingle in particular featured prominently in the recently published results of the Independent Newspapers Readers Choices of favourite holiday destinations in Ireland.

Killarney was named top spot in the overall favourite destination category but Dingle featured a very close second which is a brilliant result considering the fierce competition from areas all around the country.

Castlewood House was named best B&B in Ireland with Pax House in second place, Heaton's was in seventh and Greenmount House in eighth place, again huge recognition for all involved with these high quality outlets.

MEETING. The Dingle Business Chamber wish to announce that their Annual General Meeting, the first since the Covid Pandemic, will be held in Benner's Hotel on Wednesday February 22nd commencing at 7.30p.m. The meeting will be open to the public and the group would like to hear the views and suggestions of both the business community, employees and residents also on ways to promote and improve our town. A Dingle born person, now exiled, home on holidays recently commented on the wonderful addition the facility is compared to the site in his youth, a sentiment expressed many times by locals and visitors alike. Fuaireas an scéal seo ó Mhuiris Ó Catháin o'n mBlascaod, agus dúbhairt seisean gur chuala sé an scéal go minic ó's na sean daoine. Tá sé timcheall trí fichid bliadhain daois, agus chaith sé a shaoghal ins an Oileán.

Timcheall le dhá chéad bliadhan ó shoin bhí taoiseach mór ina chomhnuí sa bhFrainnc. Ní raibh puinn creidimh sa tír an uair sin, agus d'aortaí chun báis an dream a lean do'n bhfíor Chreideamh. New Senior Manager: Welcome All involved in Milltown/Castlemaine GAA would like to welcome Tralee man Mark Bourke to the club. Mark will take over the reins of our Senior football side for the 2023 season as we make our return to Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League for the first time in a few years.
