From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Dingle News From – Kerry Evening Post, 17 November 1847 The French brig Leonitas, that was forced to seek shelter in Dingle harbour because of the recent storms, is expected to sail for Liverpool in a day or so.
a watery grave. The coastguards succeeded in saving the remaining two. The Chief Boatman of the Cromane station Hugh Cooper was awarded the institution’s Silver Medal while the other three, Daniel Morrison, John Heaney and John Casson were each awarded £1. [John ‘Casson’ may have been John Carson, according to Admiralty records].
California Butter From – Limerick Reporter, 26 April 1850
Mr. Moriarty, the returning officer, was attacked last Wednesday by a violent mob made up almost entirely of women. He had little option but to seek refuge in the house of Captain Eagar, J. P. who summoned a force of police to escort him to his home. However, he encountered the mob again on Sunday and had to seek shelter a second time.
For the past week the entire coast of County Clare has been saturated with substantial quantities of palm oil, commonly known as ‘California Butter’ by country folk. It is believed to be part of the cargo of the Commerce that was wrecked in the Blasket Sound on April 3rd last. The value of that vessel’s cargo is estimated at £15,000.
These people were demanding out-door relief but are not entitled to it under the law at present. Several of them were convicted before the magistrate for these acts of violence. The poor to the west of Dingle are seriously in need of support. Some deaths have occurred there in recent days which are believed to be the result of poverty.
This wreck has brought a rich harvest for the fishermen of Clare. Large numbers of canoes have been seen loaded with the valuable oil. Some of it has been seized by the water-guards [coastguards] and by the police. It is understood that some of the oil has reached local markets and sold for £1 a ton. The regular market price of this commodity in Limerick is £30 a ton.
There are fears that the year ahead will be even more difficult for the people that this year. No out-door relief yet. It is regrettable to see the condition of the unfinished roads. The completion of these works would give much needed employment and relief to our perishing poor.
De Moleyn Wedding
Three fishermen were drowned at the Maharees this week. Only their upturned canoe has been found.
Publican Fined For Serving Blasket men From – Kerry Evening Post, 25 July 1900 Dingle publican Joseph O’Brien was charged with having a number of Blasket Island fishermen on his premises because they were not bona fide travellers by reason of their having slept in Dingle the previous night. The publican’s solicitor, Mr. Kennedy, contended that his client did not realise he was committing a breach of the law by serving them with drink. He said they had ordered goods the previous day, when they arrived in town, to be collected when they were returning to the island. The Bench imposed a fine of £1 on the defendant which was not to be recorded on the licence.
From – Kerry Evening Post, 12 June 1844 Instead of having this good old town go into farcical mourning for the caged Conspirators, we had last night brilliant illuminations in honour of Miss De Moleyn’s nuptials. [Lord Ventry’s daughter]. I can assure you that Dingle folk are not altogether such ardent admirers of Mr. O’Connell and his fellow convicts who are now suffering in Richmond Bridewell. [The writer of this piece is making assumptions about the people of Dingle and about Daniel O’Connell’s ‘suffering’ in Richmond Bridewell Penitentiary. O’Connell and his associates were sent to prison for organising Monster Meetings during their Repeal Movement against the Act of Union in the 1840s. They were imprisoned at the end of May 1844. However, according to old records they languished in luxury for the two months of their incarceration. The prison was located on South Circular Road, Dublin, on the site now occupied by Griffith College].
Up The Fenians From – Kerry Evening Post, 18 November 1865
West Kerry Blockade Lifted From – Derry Journal, 18 February 1921
Last Sunday night a carpenter named Foley was arrested for shouting out in support of the Fenians on the streets of Dingle. He was brought before Mr. Hussey J.P. who remanded the case to the next sitting of the Petty Sessions.
According to a report from a Tralee correspondent, Auxiliary forces of the Crown, who have been occupying much of West Kerry, between Tralee and Dingle, for the past ten days, evacuated the district last Tuesday. Their departure has brought immense relief to the area and its inhabitants, many of whose homes had been commandeered by the forces. Also, the train service on the Dingle Railway has returned to normal.
Award For Coastguards From – Tralee Chronicle, 19 April 1861. The bravery of four coastguards from The Cromane Point station has been recognised by the Royal National Life-boat Institution [RNLI]. They went to the aid of the vessel Florence Graham which was wrecked on Inch Bar on 24th of January last. The barque had a crew of 14 but 12 of them met

The Quitter’s Guide to Forty Days and Forty Nights of Lent! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Little did we know at the beginning of Lent last year (26th Feb 2020) that to forego and sacrifice would become the norm for what feels like the longest Lent ever…yet here we are again, Lent 2021, ready to give up our oul sins in the hope of salvation! Even though the significance of Lent has waned in recent years and Ireland is now a multi-cultural society, the imprint of the once strong-held dogma remains entrenched in our DNA with many thousands of people across the country “doing” Lent every year. Religion aside, this is the leanest time of the year for land-grown food as Winter stores are waning and Spring has not quite sprung yet. Nowadays, there is little evidence of Mother Nature's dwindling supplies and the idea of "giving up something for Lent" is less of a sacrifice with the amount of choice and alternatives at the ready. Popular Lenten sacrifices are to "give up" sweets, treats, booze and the fags. This mass intention within our society to ditch a vice for Lent whether it is for religious reasons or otherwise can only be a good thing. Sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes - whatever way you take your sugar abstaining from it can be challenging. Unlike other vices such as nicotine and alcohol, our bodies need sugar (or glucose) as it is the preferred fuel for the human body. It is neither wise nor easy to cut out all sources of glucose in the diet as the carbohydrates which readily convert to glucose come from vegetables, fruit, grains and of course, sugar itself. The smart way to cut back on sugar and refined carbohydrates is to provide a steady supply of glucose from naturally whole state carbohydrates - whole fruit, whole vegetables and whole grains. Sugar cravings arise when our blood sugar levels drop to a low level - the physical craving for sugar is the body's way of screaming "feed me, I am running out of fuel”. Unfortunately, getting that sugar in the belly quickly and as easily as possible has is now effortless, with sugar and refined carbohydrates readily accessible at all times. Consequently, the quick sugar hit triggers insulin to take control and remove the excess glucose from the bloodstream, ultimately, leaving you craving more sugar. And so it goes on, the merry dance of sugar and insulin. Eating whole state carbohydrates with protein and healthy fats will keep blood sugars on an even keel throughout the day and help you avoid these types of cravings. Interestingly, new research for improved blood glucose control involves eating within an eight-hour window during the day, and fasting for the remaining sixteen hours, eight of which are spent sleeping. Promising results from human (and rat) trials indicate that the timing of our meals may be as important as what we eat for improved blood sugar levels and insulin response. It is hopeful that these kinds of studies will help pave the way for improved patient outcomes for Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity and certain Metabolic diseases. Supplements such as Chromium, Cinnamon, Jerusalem Artichoke and B-vitamins are helpful for sugar cravings when combined with a natural, wholesome diet. Unlike sugar, alcohol is not required for the body to function and cravings are a result of withdrawal and/or addiction. There is, however,

sound evidence that some nutritional supplements provide added support during periods of alcohol withdrawal. Even moderate alcohol consumption is linked with a depletion of B-vitamins and in particular, B1 (Thiamin) - needed for the brain and nervous system, most notable in delirium and tremors associated with severe alcohol withdrawal. Supplementing with B-complex with extra B1 can help lessen the desire to drink while reducing some of the ill-effects of alcohol withdrawal. Studies also suggest that supplementing with the amino acid L-glutamine can reduce cravings and the anxiety linked to alcohol withdrawal. From a food perspective, lessening cravings for alcohol is helped by reducing sugar and caffeine in the diet. Milk Thistle (silymarin), a herb which supports detoxification and promotes the regeneration of liver cells, may lessen recovery time and severity of symptoms. All detoxification activities benefit from a clean, green, wholesome diet with plenty of fluids from water and herbal teas. It is widely accepted that giving up the fags leads to weight gain, which can turn many people off ditching this vice. Even though nicotine is an appetite-suppressant, most weight gained is due to ex-smokers using food as a replacement for their nicotine hit. Avoid falling into this trap by cleaning up the diet at the same time as giving up cigarettes. It might seem like too much to do all at once, but you will feel the health benefits of both actions sooner and less challenging than either one on its own. Supplements helpful during the first few nicotine-free weeks include antioxidant support from vitamins A,C and E along with Selenium and Zinc. Again, the B-vitamins are especially useful especially when paired with super-antioxidant glutathione in the form of N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC). NAC is used therapeutically for addictions and compulsive behavior and is shown to work well with B-complex vitamins especially B5. Support the respiratory system with herbal infusions of thyme, elecampane, mullein and elderberry extract. The addictive nature of sugar, alcohol and nicotine certainly make it more challenging to give them the boot, but not impossible. Nutritional support alone will not address the emotional dependency that keeps you anchored to your bad habits. Likewise, emotional support without good nutrition, will require more effort and time for effective recovery. If Lent provides the impetus and the spiritual support to banish these demons, then the rewards will be great for both the body and soul! Farming News Louis Murchan NEW FARMING BIODIVERSITY INITIATIVE The new replacement for GLAS and REPS will Focus on locally-led Farm Projects. Farmers, NGOs, Local Authorities, Communities will all be encouraged to apply. This is following a call from the current Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, who has launched a call for new locally-led farm and community biodiversity initiatives. The €1.25 million initiative, which is under the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s Rural Development Programme, invites project applications from farmer groups, local action groups, NGOs, local authorities, or community groups. The idea behind the initiative is to get all stakeholders involved. However, funding seems to be small, and when funding is small, issues of success and viability arise. The Minister claims that it is “all about helping farmers and land managers to deliver for biodiversity, both on farms and at a local level. It is a completely open call so I hope any and all interested bodies such as groups of farmers, NGOs, local authorities, community groups, or indeed existing EIPs will put forward their ideas for local biodiversity initiatives.” The projects being submitted in response to the call should have a value of at least €50,000, and they should take no longer than one year to complete, after planning is done and relevant permissions are received. The call will be competitive, and an evaluation committee will determine the projects to be funded. It is expected that these new proposals will “build on the success of the 24 existing locally led programmes around the country” in which the Department has invested approximately €60 million to date. Applications should be submitted by midnight on the 31st March 2021 to EIP@agriculture.gov.ie. A guideline document on this Open Call can be downloaded from the Department website at: www.gov.ie/en/service/18a855-european-innovation-partnershipscheme/?referrer=http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/farmerschemespayments/ europeaninnovationpar tnershipincludinglocallyledschemes/ europeaninnovationpartnership/ or by contacting the EIP Section at EIP@agriculture.gov.ie , low call number 0761 064 415. N & P STATEMENTS FOR 2020 NOW AVAILABLE End of Year Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for January to December 2020 (cattle only) are now available on the Department’s online system www.agfood.ie Documentation submitted to the Department by 31st December 2020 are not included and these will be processed in due course. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the coming year and to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare . Farmers who exceeded the limits or came close to the limits in 2020 should engage with their advisor and consider applying for a derogation in 2021, which allows application of livestock manure on a holding (including that deposited by the animals themselves) up to 250kg N/ha/year. The 2021 Derogation Application is currently open, and the closing date is 31st March 2021. Farmers participating in BEAM can also access their updated figures under Exceptional Aid Measures on www.agfood.ie. Figures available are accurate up until the 31st of December and farmers can also see how much of their target Nitrates reduction figure to the 30th of June deadline remains. Letters detailing these figures will issue to all BEAM participants next week. Further information, including Terms & Conditions for Nitrates Derogation are available on the Department’s website here: www.gov.ie/en/publication/ c9563-rural-environment-sustainability-nitrates/#nitrates-derogation NEW FARM ROADWAY AND WATER RULES REGULATIONS New regulations for farm roadways and waters came into effect last month on January 1, 2021. The new measures aim to further reduce Irish farming’s environmental footprint, with particular regard to water, climate and air 12 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
quality. New on-farm measures aimed at further reducing Irish farming’s environmental footprint, with particular regard to water, climate and air quality, were signed into law by the government on November 20. This introduced many new on-farm requirements, with effect from January 1, 2021. These on-farm requirements will vary from farm to farm depending on the farms stocking rate in the previous calendar year. A technical amendment has also been made to increase the nitrogen excretion figure for the average dairy cow from 85kg to 89kg of organic nitrogen which impacts on all dairy farmers, as well as beef farmers finishing dairy cull cows. Measures relating to the prevention of direct runoff from farm roadways to ‘waters’ applies to all farms, regardless of enterprise or stocking rate. For all farm roadways, there can be no sediment or nutrient run-off into ‘waters. This includes watercourses, rivers, drains, lakes, etc, including features which may carry no water for part of the year. Turning to more heavily stocked farms, farms with a grassland stocking rate [GSR] at or above 170kg organic N per hectare are now required to exclude bovines from watercourses and locate all water troughs at least 20m from watercourses. This means bovines cannot drink, or have access to freely enter or cross watercourses. Watercourses on your farm are defined as the solid blue lines on the OSI 1:5000 scale maps, viewable on this website OSI Place Map. To comply with these requirements, the following is required: • Where watercourses are currently unfenced, a fence must be erected at least 1.5m from the top of the bank; • Existing fences must be moved out to at least 1.5m from the top of the watercourse bank; • An exception to this is where an existing roadway runs parallel to a watercourse. The existing fence will suffice provided there is a fence on both sides of the roadway and the roadway is cambered away for the watercourse, along with an earthen bank between the roadway and watercourse; • Bovines are still permitted to cross through watercourses provided both sides of the watercourse are fenced 1.5m back from the top of the bank, bovines cannot freely drink from the watercourse, and fences are in place to prevent bovines freely crossing or going up/down stream; • All new and existing water troughs must be located at least 20m from watercourses. While not a legal requirement at present, the provision of bridges over watercourses where regular crossing is necessary is still considered to be best practice. Approximately 5,000 farms in Ireland export slurry to comply with the 170kg organic N per hectare limit and stay outside of derogation. In addition to the requirements already outlined for farms with a GSR at or above 170kg organic N per hectare, these farms with a Whole Farm Stocking Rate [WFSR] at or above 170kg organic N per hectare (excluding slurry exports) are now required to implement a number of additional new measures. These additional requirements remove most of the potential benefits at farm level of avoiding derogation. These measures are: • A requirement to apply lime where soil analysis results show an agronomic need. A minimum of 25% of the total lime requirement needs to be applied each year; • Limit the Crude Protein of ration fed to grazing bovines greater than 2 years of age to ≤ 15% during the period of April 1-15; • Use Low Emission Slurry Spreading equipment for all slurry applied from April 15, 2021. The new regulations came into effect on January 1, 2021. FLEXIBILITY INTRODUCED INTO BEAM SCHEME The European Commission will allow Ireland flexibility to set a new reduction period under the Beef Emergency Aid Measure (BEAM) scheme, it has been confirmed. DAFM approached the EU Agriculture Commission seeking flexibility to offer farmers the choice of changing the reduction year from the existing period of July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 to a new period of January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.
However, the new reduction period will only apply to those farmers who opt to apply for the change. Farmers that are currently on track to meet the 5pc nitrogen reduction targets can use the original reference period ending June 30 this year. The option of a new reduction period now gives those farmers who want it a second opportunity to meet the nitrogen reduction requirement of the scheme. The Department must now engage with Farming Organisations and Agricultural Consultants and Advisors to ensure that they and their clients are “fully informed” of the requirements of the scheme and the new reduction period. DAFM will be writing to all of the scheme participants shortly giving updated nitrogen figures to clearly inform them of what they need to do meet the requirements of the scheme and will also be giving advice on how and when they can opt to change the reduction year. REPS REPLACEMANT SCHEME There is lots of speculation about the newly proposed replacement scheme for GLAS, AEOS and REPS, which is being referred to as a REPS-Lite scheme. Until there is some concrete proposal, there is little point in reporting too much on the subject. There are many questions but few answers coming our way from the Department, so the advice is to wait and see what is on offer.
Pat Hanafin Septic Tank Emptying & Drain Cleaning With over 30 years in business providing a Septic Tank Cleaning Service in the Dingle Peninsula, we now provide DRAIN CLEANING. From 2” sink lines to 4” - 12” sewer pipes. Biocycle tanks filter system, washed after emptying. Providing power washing service and washing facility. 24 hour cover.
One thing we do know is that the scheme will only be for people not in GLAS, so any who are, should simply forget about this, and worry about the GLAS Replacement scheme hoped for in 2022. The other thing we know is that the Department of Agriculture are screening and assessing advisors/consultants/planners, (call them what you will) based on some fact that they may have participated in a Pearl-Mussel, Natterjack Toad, Hen Harrier, Corncrake or some other scheme in the past. Therefore, at a stroke of a Department pen, you may not be able to choose your advisor of choice. What a load of…… They really need to have a good chat with themselves, up in Agriculture House.

CAO Late Application Question: The closing date for applying to college was 1 February. Can I still apply? Answer: You apply for almost all full-time undergraduate courses through the Central Applications Office (CAO). This includes, for example, university and institutes of technology undergraduate courses such as Higher Certificates at Level 6 and degrees at Levels 7 and 8. The closing date for 2021 CAO applications was 1 February 2021. However, late applications are allowed up to 5.15pm on 1 May 2021. There is a fee to apply for courses through the CAO and late applications pay an increased fee. Late online applications cost €60. Regardless of when you applied, you can access your application to change the courses you picked or the order of courses. This Change of Mind facility is free. It opens on 5 May and closes on 1 July 2021 at 5:15pm. If you want to be assessed as a mature applicant, or if you want to be considered for the HEAR and/or DARE schemes, most colleges require you to have applied to the CAO by 1 February 2021. You must submit your completed application for DARE and/or HEAR by 1 March 2021 and submit all your supporting documents by 15 March 2021. There are also some restricted courses which you cannot apply for after 1 February 2021. The CAO’s handbook lists all the courses on offer and gives information on how to apply.
ere to you in Kerry
Decisions on offers of places are normally made in August and September, after the results of the Leaving Certificate have come out. A detailed schedule of the offer rounds is in the CAO handbook. It is important to note that there is no central applications body for PostLeaving Certificate (PLC) courses. Students must apply directly to the individual colleges. You should check the closing date for PLC courses with the college where the PLC course is taking place. __________________________________________________

YOUR MONEY MATTERS FINANCIAL ADVICE COLUMN Q&A
Saving Energy Tips at home OnlineCost Shopping post-Brexit
Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?
Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne
A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.
What changes now apply to online shopping from the UK?

If the company is registered outside the EU, including the UK (excluding Northern Ireland), then from 1 January, all online shopping orders are subject to Irish VAT and customs charges, depending on the value and the type of items. The Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU does include tariff free trade between the EU and the UK, so you could avoid customs duty, but only if goods originate and are manufactured in the UK and have not been imported into the UK from another country. • Additional charges and VAT apply when you buy from websites in the UK, depending on the value of the items and where the product is manufactured. • EU consumer protection may no longer apply, instead your consumer rights will be set down in UK law. • It may be more difficult to resolve a dispute with a UK business. Where are you buying from? When shopping online, it is more important than ever for consumers to know where they are buying from. You need to know where a business is based, what consumer rights apply and whether you have to pay additional taxes and charges. Do not rely on the fact that prices are given in Euro and remember that the “.ie” domain name does not guarantee that the business is Irish-based. Many non-Irish companies have registered Irish domains but have no warehouses in Ireland, meaning their products have to be imported into Ireland. If you are unsure where a company is based then you need to check their registered business address in the T&Cs section of their website.

These limits are for the whole delivery, not just one item. You must pay the above duties where applicable, and VAT on alcohol or tobacco products and perfumes, regardless of their value. According to The Irish Times (11/01/21), people in Ireland buying certain goods from a UK based website may have to pay an increase of over 40% on the original cost once new taxes and charges are added. The newspaper gave an example of what these extra charges could mean on the actual cost of your purchase. For example, an item from a UK based website, costing €167 on their website, when additional charges were added, would come to the new price of €236.32 for Irish consumers. If you are buying more than one item, it may be worth your while to divide your items into sperate transactions to ensure the total is under €150, thus avoiding customs duty on certain items. If you make a purchase and, on delivery, you are advised of additional charges and you are not happy to pay them, you can choose to refuse to pay the charges and the goods will then be returned to the sender. Exercise your right to a refund! What can I do to avoid these charges? The simplicity and pleasure of shopping locally has never been more attractive but when you do need to buy online from a company not based in your area, make sure you are buying from Irish or EU based websites. It is up to the individual consumer to be vigilant when shopping online. If you are happy to pay the extra charges on a UK website, feel free to do so, but be aware also of the changes to your consumer rights, and make sure to check out their Terms & Conditions. Small Changes: Supermarkets and Plastic
There was a time when plastic waste was just seen as an unattractive blight on the landscape but the extent of plastic pollution and the dangers it poses are becoming more and more alarming with each new scientific report published. Irish research on autopsied animals has found that 20% of sea birds, 70% of deep sea fish and 100% of sea mammals had plastics in their gut. Last year, an Italian led study found micro plastics in the placentas of unborn babies and analysis by the World Wildlife Fund has estimated that each of us is ingesting the equivalent of a credit card amount of micro plastics each week, highlighting that plastic pollution is not just an environmental problem but also a major human health issue. We all buy into the marketing portrayal of Ireland as a green country and like to believe that ‘other’ countries are the real polluters but we have the unenviable title of the highest plastic producers in Europe. Last month, data released by Eurostat showed that Irish people produce almost double the volume of plastic waste per person compared to the average European. We also have the fourth worst recycling rate for plastics in Europe. This data is very much at odds with the concerns of adult participants in an EPA research report ‘No Home for Plastic’, who identified waste issues as the most pressing environmental concern. This disparity can be explained by a key finding in the report which was that even the most environmentally aware and motivated people are frequently unable to make better choices around plastic consumption due to a lack of convenient and affordable options. While there
are many changes individuals can make in order to live more sustainably we should not be scapegoated for the inaction of large businesses and governments. When it comes to plastics, grocery shopping is a major contributor to unnecessary plastic waste. More than 60% of the 60kg of plastic which every Irish person generates each year comes from plastic packaging. Large supermarket chains have been quite good at highlighting initiatives they have put in place to improve their green credentials e.g. compostable bags, providing bins to discard excess packaging behind the tills, plastic pledges etc. The reality, however, as shown by a UK focused study (Irish supermarkets are modelled on UK system so the data is likely to be similar) was that there was only 1.6% less plastic used in supermarkets in 2019 when compared to 2018. In addition, while the major global brands stocked on supermarket shelves such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Unilever, Mars and P&G are starting to acknowledge their role in driving the crisis they have been aggressive in promoting false solutions when addressing the problem (e.g. promoting recycling to shift responsibility to consumers; promoting bioplastics which just shift the problem from crude oil production to increased land use; compostable packaging is a step in the right direction but still perpetuates a throwaway culture). There is also the issue of cost to the consumer. For example, retailers have been making progress in providing loose fruit and vegetables options to customers but unpackaged alternatives have been found to be almost twice as expensive as packaged options in several Irish supermarkets (DCU Water Institute). Making greener decisions is often weighed against price and convenience so making plastic-free options easily available in major supermarkets and at affordable prices is crucial to get people to co-operate with plastic free schemes. So how difficult would it be for large supermarket chains to implement real change? A report published by Greenpeace last year ‘Unpacked: How supermarkets can cut plastic packaging in half by 2025’ outlined how supermarkets could achieve a minimum of 50% reduction in single use plastic packaging purely via reduction and reusable packaging systems. even just five categories – bottled water, fizzy drinks, milk, vegetables, salads and fruit; would reduce their plastic footprint by 35%. Setting up deposit and return schemes, installing refill stations for dried goods, drinks, detergents etc., supporting reuse by accepting reusable containers for meat, fish, deli produce etc., and rewarding customers for using this system through a loyalty points scheme are all ways that retailers could take action. Removing all unnecessary plastic especially soft unrecyclable plastics i.e. windows on paper packaging, individually wrapped biscuits, unnecessary films etc., offering loose fruit and veg at competitive prices, opting for laser labels instead of produce stickers on fruit and veg or a rental scheme for the bags for life when people forget them are further simple practices that would have positive consequences. Large supermarket chains and distribution companies should also be urged to use their purchasing power as leverage and undertake more robust engagement with major polluting brands to rapidly scale up initiatives in reuse and overall packaging reduction. Most supermarkets in the Netherlands have a plastic free aisle and Lidl France has had refill stations since 2017 so these types of initiatives are not impossible to establish, especially if they are also encouraged at a political level. The EU directive on single-use plastics will come into effect on 5th of July this year for also proving change is possible when the political will is there. Directing action from a political level is known as a top-down approach but consumers can also be a driving force in bringing about necessary change from the bottom up. Signing petitions may seem inconsequential but the supermarket business is highly competitive so they do take customer views and sentiment seriously. Friends of the Earth Ireland (www.foe.ie) currently have a campaign supported by @climateloveireland @voiceireland and @sickofplasticireland on their site to lobby the government and Irish supermarkets to reduce single use plastics. Being seen to support reuse initiatives e.g. using keep cups for beverages or bringing a reusable containers where accepted when buying meat, salads etc. sets a precedent for other consumers. Finally, supporting small local shops that offer plastic free grocery options drives change by contributing to a sustainable circular economy. the swim and gathering sponsors themselves. 3. Brandon Bay Run Postponed Until Saturday 23rd October Given the current COVID-19 situation and ongoing lockdown, the organising committee of the Brandon Bay Run have decided to postpone the 2021 event to Saturday October 23rd. Given the timescale for the vaccine rollout and the ongoing efforts to contain the virus, we believe that by moving our event to October it gives the best possible chance of ensuring we can hold a successful event this year in a way that is safe for everyone. Safety is our priority and we look forward to welcoming you all to our unique event in October.
The latest edition of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society Journal (2020), launched at Christmas, features a wonderful article by regular WKL contributor Ted Creedon on the ‘Coastguard on the Dingle Peninsula’. Based on Ted’s detailed studies of this topic, it outlines the long history of this maritime service and the wide range of activities it undertook on the Dingle Peninsula over a hundred-year period. This article discusses the recruitment, background and deployment of the service personnel as well as their accommodation, conditions and daily routine. It examines the Coastguard’s impact on the smuggling trade and its many extensive responsibilities such as the rescue of shipwreck crews, the protection of shipwreck cargoes, the enforcement of fishery regulations and humanitarian relief work during the Great Famine. This article also explores the relationship of the Coastguard personnel and their families with coastal communities, and the role of the service in times of civil unrest, conflict and war. The Journal is available in bookshops and supermarkets in Dingle town, and other select bookshops across Kerry, or can be ordered online at www.kerryhistory.ie, priced at €20.

All enquiries are being directed to the website. We have no doubt requests for accommodation will increase during the following months as vaccinations & safety in travel roll out. Logainmneacha na Machairí: The traditional lesser-known place names of a locality are rooted in its topography and cultural history and reflect the close relationship between a community and its immediate environment. The names of fields, rocks, inlets, bóthairíns, landing places, humps, hollows and so on contribute immensely to the rich tapestry of times past. Through a study of their etymology, some of the layers of our history can be partially unveiled. ‘Urlann’, ‘Páirc an Ráithín’ and ‘Cathair na Faithche’ reflect the presence of pre-Christian forts while ‘The Bán’ and ‘Gort na Sciath’ depict past agricultural land use. Calaithe an Bháid, Calaithe an Ghrin, Calaithe Léin and the Cé, all landing places, indicate the importance of the sea for fishing and as a means of transport for the inhabitants of Oileán tSeanaigh. Many place names would not have been preserved had they not been handed down through the years. We therefore must acknowledge the contribution of past generations in preserving this important aspect of our heritage. We would also like to thank all those who contributed to this collection: Compiled by Martin Lynch and Eoghan Ó Loingsigh for Maharees Conservation Association. This excellent production is a delight to read. Very well written and illustrated to the highest standards this will bring back long lost memories of place names steeped in history and create a sense of pride to all who wish to have a connection to The Maharees. To those that travelled long distances to be with us. A special word must be extended to the McGonagle family, Bridie’s Aunty Síle who travelled from Dublin with her son Declan, not easy at her wonderful age, and to Bridie’s sister-in-law Mary and family, who travelled from the UK. Your effort and solidarity was greatly appreciated. Míle buíochas to family friend, Sinéad Fitzpatrick who travelled from Dublin and led Bridie to her final resting place in Ballinclár cemetary to the sound of Amazing Grace on the bag pipes. It was a poignant send-off for a dearly loved mother, wife, sister and friend. To our wonderful neighbours and friends in Comdubh, Ballincourty, Annascaul and “back west” – whom provided food and support in many ways: The Guilfoyle families, the Falvey families (thank you Alan for minding the sheep!) Eily and Timothy Kennedy, Mossie and Mary Kennedy, Mary and Danny Kennedy, Kathleen O’Connor, Denis Casey, the Collins family, Dingle, and the Sullivan and Fitzgerald families, Ventry. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Additional thanks to Dr. Pat Myers and healthcare staff at Annascaul Medical Centre, to undertaker Dónal O’Connor for his sensitivity and professionalism, to Fr. Jerry Keane, our previous parish priest, for a meaningful requiem, to Siobhán Griffin for her eloquent singing. Míle míle buíochas. To Bridie’s care team in UHK, Tralee, both in the ICU and Palliative Care Unit, a special word of thanks for the care and dedication given to both Bridie and family. In particular, to Dr. Claire O’Brien and team, as well as the nurses in the ICU and to familiar faces in the Palliative Care; Áine Moriarty, Deirdre Dorgan and Gene Browne. Míle míle buíochas to you and your colleagues as Bridie was cared for with deserved dignity in her final days. As a family we were provided with a sense of peace and comfort. To Bridie’s card-playing friends, thank you dearly. Bridie rarely missed a Wednesday night at Whist Drive which was testament to how much she cherished your company, and you hers. To Bridie’s friends at ICA who provided a guard of honour outside the church. Thank you also for your kind words of support. We know how fond you all were of Bridie. You and the ICA organization gave her a wonderful opportunity to show off her creative talents and to enjoy social occasions. I hope you know how much this meant to her, and that the love and respect you all had for her was reciprocated. Bridie was carer to her husband Tom and a special expression of gratitude must be extended towards the West Kerry Home-Help team and to the community nurses who stepped up the level of care for Tom and went above and beyond to help support us after Bridie’s sudden and unexpected illness. Fíor-bhuíoch daoibh go léir. Bridie’s passing has been difficult for many of her family and friends and not a day passes where she is not thought about by many. During this time we think of her son Patrick and his family in Canada, granddaughter Sorcha, studying in Amsterdam, as well as her dear brother James and family in Australia. Covid-19 may have restricted our opportunity to gather together and remember the kind and wonderful beacon of positivity and love that Bridie was but it hasn’t stopped it. We will gather when it is safe to do so. “Gratitude is the real treasure God wants us to find, because it’s not the pot of gold but the rainbow that colors our world”. Richelle E. Goodrich. Sin céad is tríocha bliain ag tabhairt daoine le chéile, ag buanú cairdis agus ag saibhriú cuimhní cinn. Our club is now embarking on developing a five-year Strategic Plan. This is a hugely important initiative which will map the future direction of our club and build on the great work, which has been (and continues to be) carried out by our many volunteers, members, officers and players.

Le mór meas,
Tá ár gCumann, anois, ag díriú isteach ar Phlean Straitéiseach Cúig Bliana a ullmhú. Is togra é seo atá fíor thábhachtach dár gCumann mar tabharfaidh sé treoir dúinn sna blianta atá romhainn. Chomh maith leis sin, tógfaidh sé ar an obair iontach atá déanta (agus atáthar ag déanamh) ag ár n-oibrithe deonacha, baill, oifigigh agus imreoirí. Is cumann iontach é CLG Daingean Uí Chúis ach tá sé ar intinn againn é a dhéanamh níos láidre agus na dlúth cheangail atá againn leis an bpobal áitiúil a neartú.

Richie Williams EIRCODES. We remind our readers to always have your Eircode close or better still memorised in case of emergency. More institutions, emergency services, companies and other services are relying on the correct eircode as the fastest and most accurate way of making contact with clients so scribble it down for easy reference for yourself or others when required. JERUSALEMA CHALLENGE. Well done to the members of the Dingle Coastguard Unit who recently took up the challenge and provided much needed public entertainment on social media and on many National Media outlets with their efforts. This was followed by similar dance routines from Walsh's Chemists and Garvey's Supervalu staff members all of whom deserve a miile buíochas the next time you pass by their premises. EVENTS. A number of popular annual events in the Peninsula have again fallen foul of the Covid restrictions this year. This year's Ride Dingle Cycle Challenge and the St Patrick's Day Parades have been cancelled. The 2020 Dingle Marathon was rescheduled to May this year but will not now go ahead due to restrictions. Howerer it is hoped to hold the usual September Marathon on Saturday September 4th with full details on bookings and transfers for those already registered on the website. Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh goes ahead from Thursday February 18th with online instrument and voice classes but very limited spaces now available on www.

JOB OPPORTUNITY. A Community Engagement Co Ordinator is to be employed on a 30 month contract for the Dingle Peninsula 2030 Plan. Full details online jobs@dinglehub.com and the closing date for submissions is March 5th. Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub are also offering an interesting range of courses and activities with details at their website. AWARDS. Congratulations to all at Dingle Distillery on being named Craft Producer of the Year at the Icons of Whiskey Ireland Awards for the fourth year in a row. They now go forward to the Global Awards event in a months time. ESB DINGLE PROJECT. The people who were lucky enough to be selected as ESB Ambassadors for the Electric Vehicles Trial in the Peninsula have now collected their new models. This is a very interesting project and over the next 12 months it is hoped that the information collected will help produce a long term efficiency energy plan for remote areas in this country. Drive carefully folks. TOURISM. It looks very much like we will be confined to holidaying in Ireland again this year. No bad thing in itself but listening to comment on national media it will be a very competitive market. Other destinations apparently are advertising much better monetary offers to those shopping for value at present. So lets not slay the goose that lays the golden egg or it could be a quiet summer in the Peninsula!!!.

Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership Online Resources Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership (Kerry LCYP) at Kerry ETB has announced a suite of online creativity resources that are available to parents, schools, youth groups, children and young people. The information is located on the online resources section of the LCYP pages on the Kerry ETB website and can be accessed by searching the website www.kerryetb. ie/creativity Activities, videos, manuals and step by step instructions on all things creative can be printed off or downloaded and used as step by step guides to help you get creative at home. Included also are video demonstrations by artists and craft makers, and fun instructional guides for youth leaders and teachers to help making and creating that bit easier at home during the current lockdown. “We are conscious that during a lockdown, young people are looking for things to do that are different, a bit of fun but also have some degree of learning involved. We are hopeful that schools, youth groups and families will find the list of activities useful and will give them a go”, stated Ann O’Dwyer, Director of Schools, Youth and Music at Kerry ETB.
Killagha Abbey, Milltown: Mossy Donegan
Times Past Letter written 100 years ago by a recent emigrant, sent from Springfield Massachusetts to Dingle.
The activities include a range of craft and design step by step guides, but also a series of video workshops that can be included in a lesson or watched at home or in school – workshops on poetry, design, drama, art and much more. There are also comedy sketches to enjoy online, and craft activities that use everyday household materials that can be sourced in the kitchen or cheaply in the local shop. Design projects include everything from découpage to designs for bird houses and bird feeders, painting, poetry and creative writing instruction. There is also a history of animation video and a screen and playwriting video workshop that will appeal to young film makers. “We asked creative practitioners in Kerry to share their know-how on a range of activities to suit different age groups. The step by step guides and videos will help you get creative at home, but equally transfer if you are looking for new ways to working with young people online”, stated Deirdre Enright, CoOrdinator of the Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership Programme at Kerry ETB. There is also a handbook of creative exercises that artists and tutors will enjoy and anyone who is looking for creative ways to work with young people. West Kerry Live 31

If you have not had a chance to enjoy them yet, grab a cup of tea or coffee, and enjoy them on https://www. facebook.com/dingle.official. What a great happy lift for us all and fair play to all involved at Dingle Coast Guard, Garvey’s SuperValu Dingle and Walsh’s Pharmacy who dedicated their #Jerusalema “In memory of Jack Walsh and all those in our community who have recently passed away” and “In grateful appreciation of the dedication and hard work of the team at West Kerry Community Hospital.” How poignant and yet wonderful……… Walking: Following a recent NEWKD LAAC virtual meeting and publicity, it was shocking to hear that farmers and their livestock are having terrible experiences by dogs being brought on walks through the countryside and up on to the hills and mountains. Many walkers simply do not understand that their beloved pet can terrify sheep especially yeos who are losing their lambs through fear. Please help to spread the word that walkers with pets please enjoy areas away from farmlands, commonage and uplands to support our farming community and their livestock – thank you. The following are a recent update on supports for businesses, not only in tourism but in varying sectors too which may be helpful: CBAS: The Tánaiste recently announced a new €60m Scheme, called the COVID-19 Business Aid Scheme (CBAS) - developed to provide grants to businesses ineligible for the Government’s other existing schemes designed to help with fixed costs. Wholesalers, suppliers, caterers and events companies down 75% or more in
Message from Fr Michael PP Dingle. I hope you are well in what continues to be very strange times. We are almost at the anniversary of our first case of Covid-19. Little did anyone think last February that it would still be dominating our news and our lives one year later. I encourage all of you to follow the health guidelines from the HSE as best you can so that the virus will eventually be suppressed in order that life may return to what we consider normal. It is important to stay connected with our faith through daily prayer, watching Mass online or listening to Mass on Radio Kerry. For those who may be finding life difficult I encourage you to reach out for help. Many people are willing to help. CRSS Support: There has been no change to the CRSS scheme, however, discussions are ongoing in relation to the extension of the scheme. queries, give advice and reassurance where necessary seven days a week, 8am – 8pm, by calling 0818 222 024. We are now in the season of Lent. This time is set aside each year to call us to ‘come back to God with all our heart’. The practices of prayer, fasting and giving to charity are a way of making real our return to God. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing our world. It is one of the first matters that President Biden is paying attention to. Pope Francis has also focused on this important issue since the beginning of his papacy. One of the sad realities is that those who contribute least to damaging the environment and climate are those who suffer most from weather events that were not part of their weather pattern. When we hear of loss of species and destruction of rainforests we can feel powerless. Trócaire continues to do much
Rates Waiver: The Rates Waiver has been extended to the end of March so certain businesses most severely impacted, such as hospitality, leisure, childcare, personal care, entertainment, retail (excluding large supermarkets), airports, health and service stations. CRO Annual Returns: Following engagement, the Registrar of Companies has extended the current arrangement in relation to the filing of annual returns. In light of the COVID-19 situation, the Registrar had taken a number of decisions during 2020 to assist companies with the filing of annual returns. Tourism Business Continuity Scheme: The specific Tourism Businesses excluded from the CRSS scheme will now be able to avail of the new Tourism Business Continuity Scheme, being facilitated through Fáilte Ireland. Eligible businesses include Outdoor Activity providers (including Bike Tours, Surf Schools, Kayaking Tours, Angling, Boat Tours, Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tours / Walking Tours, Outdoor Attractions, Equestrian) and Tourism Golf Courses. Also, Visitor Attractions not eligible for CRSS (e.g. charity / not for profit status or primarily outdoor attractions); Caravan and Camping; and Cruise Hire Companies. Cromane News Jane Casey GAA The AGMs of Cromane GAA club’s senior and Coiste na nÓg took place online last Wednesday evening. Our first virtual AGMs took place without a hiccup thanks to the work of our club secretary Finbar Casey. Motions were discussed and passed as we discussed the year just gone and looked ahead with optimism to 2021. Our club is in a healthy state thanks to the support of our sponsors, members, players, parents and guardians of our players as well as our committee members. Sincere thanks were issued to Brian and Gráinne Keary of Jack’s, the club’s main sponsor, to Mad Mix, Hannah Mary’s, A4 Killorglin and all who contributed to different events during the year. Special thanks were reserved for the parents and team supporters who travel all over the county to encourage our players – they play an invaluable role. It was, of course, a very challenging year for everyone due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. Club activity has been curtailed but we will bounce back stronger than ever. Our chairman Stephen Casey stepped down after four years at the helm and he has been replaced by JP McCarthy. Our senior club also welcomed a new Vice-President Willie Galvin. Sadly, in 2020, Canon Michael Fleming passed away. Fr Fleming was Killorglin Parish Priest of the past 17 years was also a club Vice-President. We offer our condolences to all those affected by bereavements during 2020, the thoughts of the club are with you and your family. As a club, one of our main aims in the coming year is to improve our own facilities. Some work has already started and we have a lot of planning and thought put into our options. Watch this space. In relation to facilities, the club thanked the Cromane Community Field committee for the use of their field throughout the year especially over the winter period for training. Our club merchandise has opened up another source of income and we were overwhelmed by the response in September and October to our latest pop-up shop. Many thanks to all those who purchased - it is great to see the club gear on display around the area. The club would like to thank Paul Patrick O’Sullivan and Patricia Teahan for their work in this area. Our field committee of Patrick Casey, Willie Galvin, and Patie Healy among others were also thanked for their work in a challenging time when club grounds were effectively off-limits for large parts of the year. The club would like to thank all those officers that left positions at the end of 2020. Among them was Sinead Lavin who has given great service to the club at Coiste na nÓg and senior level. Thank you, Sinead. LOTTO: The club lotto has gone from strength to strength but was badly hit by the pandemic. In total, the club lotto was paused for 20 weeks in 2020 with a lot of potential income lost. The club would again like to congratulate Shane Flynn on winning one of our biggest ever jackpots in September when he won €18,100. The club is very lucky to have a dedicated team of lotto sellers who go out every week to sell on behalf of the club. 34 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
Sincere thanks to all of them. SENIORS: Our senior team - trained for the first time by Alan O’Neill – had a very competitive 2020. In the COVID-shortened season, they played four Mid Kerry league games: beating MilltownCastlemaine, drawing with Laune Rangers and losing to Keel and Glenbeigh-Glencar. In the junior championship, they also played four games (including a qualifier win over Ballylongford). In the group stages, they lost their opening game before the narrowest of losses at home to Tarbert ended their hopes. They went on to beat Lios Póil twice in two more championship games, one was the final junior championship group game and the other was the semi-final of the Novice championship. The final of the 2020 Novice championship is yet to be fixed for obvious reasons and we await the winner of the other semi-final between Asdee and Tuosist. The Cromane seniors have been drawn to play Keel in the Mid Kerry SFC quarter-final. The winner of this game will take on Beaufort or GlenbeighGlencar in the semi-final. The Cromane players that represented the club on the Mid Kerry senior football panel that reached the 2020 county final, namely Kieran O’Sullivan and Darren Houlihan, were also applauded for their efforts. UNDER-21s: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-21 team reached the Mid Kerry under-21 championship final for the third year in a row as a combined back in February 2020. They beat Milltown/Castlemaine in the semi-final on a scoreline of GCC 4-11, Milltown-Castlemaine 1-3. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the final has yet to be played. CÚL CAMP: The annual Cromane GAA Cul Camp took place in August. The camps, once again, were a great success. Great credit is due to all the organisers, coaches, parents/guardians, and - of course - the players for making the camps such a success. The camp saw the Cromane pitch full of eager players improving their skills. Many thanks to PJ Reidy, the Mid/South Kerry GDA, and Cliona Coffey, the camp coordinator, and all of the coaches from the Mid Kerry area that helped the players improve their skills and have a good time during the camp. COISTE NA nÓG: Our underage programme was severely impacted by the pandemic. However, between January and March and the postlockdown window of July-September, we had a great response from players, parents and coaches. From under-6s right up to our under-16s we had some excellent performances. It was also great to see underage and senior players involved in coaching at underage age levels. Thanks also must go to our coaching officer Gavin O’Connor, who is now taking over as Coiste na nÓg chairperson. Our new coaching officer is Sean O’Sullivan who we must also congratulate on his new role with the Kerry under-20s. Our under-14s (amalgamated with GlenbeighGlencar) were in fine form in 2020 winning all six of the games they played. This bunch will continue in 2021 as the age-groupings change to odd ages. We will be amalgamated with Glenbeigh-Glencar at under-13 to under-17 Coiste na nÓg level. Our under-16s finished the year on a high winning two and drawing one of their last three games. They really found their form and should look to the resumption of football in 2021 with great confidence. Many thanks to all of our players and
coaches for their efforts and commitment to the Cromane cause throughout a stop-start year. CLUB EXECUTIVE 2021 - the following officers were elected to serve the club in 2021: President - Patie Healy; Vice-Presidents: Wille Galvin, Christina Casey, John Joe O’Reilly, Patie Joy; Chairperson: JP McCarthy; Vice-chairpersons: Stephen Casey and Paudie McCarthy: Secretary: Finbar Casey; Assistant secretary - Cian O'Keeffe; Treasurer: Johnny O’Connor; Assistant Treasurer: Patricia Teahan; PRO - Vacant; Registrars: Patrick Casey, Liam Teahan, Orla O'Connor, Darren Houlihan; Insurance Officer: Dave Morris; Assistant Insurance Officer: Stephen Scales; County Board Delegate - Patrick Casey; Mid-Kerry Board Delegates - Seán O’Reilly, David Moroney; Coiste na nÓg County Board Delegates - Seán O’Reilly; Mid Kerry Coiste na nÓg/Central Region Delegate - Seán O’Reilly; Scór Officer - Eibhlín Duffy; Coaching Officer: Sean O’Sullivan; Health and Wellbeing Officer: Matt Colborne; Children’s officer - Sandra Healy; COVID-19 officer: Patrick Casey; Lotto committee chairperson: Stephen Casey; Development committee chairperson: Paudie McCarthy; Coiste na nÓg Chairman: Gavin O’Connor; Coiste na nÓg Secretary: Paudie McMahon; Coiste na nÓg Assistant Secretary: Cian O’Keeffe; Coiste na nÓg PRO: Vacant. EVERY STEP COUNTS: Since mid-January, the club has been involved in the Irish Life - My Health Every Step Counts challenge. There is the possibility of a prize for the club but it has been great to see so many taking part. We have gradually risen up the leaderboard and, as of this weekend, we were in 12th place in Munster out of 137 clubs. Over 90 walkers have registered under Cromane GAA Club and we have collectively walked 12,750km - a great achievement. The challenge continues until March 5 when there will then be a draw where the club will be in with a chance to win O’Neills gear valued at €2,500. Thanks to all those taking part. CLOTHES BANK: If you are doing a spring clean and wish to dispose of clean linen, clothes, they can go in the Clothes Bank located at Cromane Gaa Pitch. No duvets, pillows or dirty or wet items. LAMBING SEASON: Please if you own a dog, know that they are secure and not roaming. Make sure they are indoors at night. Dogs cause fear to sheep by just their presence. Always keep your dog on a lead. MASS from St. James Church Killorglin is live streamed on https://www.mcmedia.tv/camera/ killorglin-st-james-church NEWS: If you wish to include items in the News please email to caseycrest@hotmail.com and we will include it in the Notes. ENGAGEMENT: Heartiest Congratulations to Katie Louise Teahan and Ian Costelloe who announced their Engagement last week. Blessings to them both for the future. BIRTHDAY WISHES to Sheila Scales, Cromane Lower who celebrated a special birthday last week. Good health Safety and Blessings to her for the future. CLEAN and TIDY. With alot of people walking and cycling in these Covid Times, please do not discard your rubbish such as face masks, coffee cups. Take them home and dispose of them properly, in your bin.

Ginger and Lime Chicken, Red Cabbage Slaw & Spiced Oven Fries Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School
METHOD For the mayonnaise Put the egg yolks and mustard in a bowl. Place a damp cloth under the bowl to prevent the bowl moving during the next stage. Whisk the eggs and mustard well, drizzle in the oil very slowly and keep whisking as you add the oil. The mixture will start to thicken as you add the oil. It is important to keep whisking. Once it has come together, add the lemon juice and salt. Taste and adjust the seasoning. To marinate the chicken Dry the chicken with kitchen paper, Mix the mayonnaise, lime zest, juice and ginger in a bowl. Add in the chicken and mix altogether. Allow this to marinate for about 30 minutes.
The flavours of ginger and lime really adds flavour to this and will leave you wanting more. It is marinated in mayonnaise and lime before cooking, which sounds weird but when you take further look at the ingredients of mayonnaise, it no longer seems odd. Use your favourite mayonnaise if you decide not to make your own. I have included a recipe for homemade mayonnaise which I feel is far superior than shop bought version. This is a great recipe for a weekend night meal and hopefully will become one on of your favourites. Serves 6 INGREDIENTS
For the red cabbage slaw Mix all the ingredients for the red cabbage slaw together. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Again, this will benefit if made and left a little while. For the fries Preheat the oven to 190ºC In a bowl, add the potatoes wedges, add the spices, oil and salt. Mix these well. On a lined tray, spread the wedges out so that they are in a single layer. Place this in the oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, take out and turn the wedges. Bake for another 10 minutes or so. Remove from the oven and season with salt and pepper.

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Níl an aimsir thar moladh beirte. Tá sí briste le míosa. Ní raibh sneachta anseo againn- bhí sé lastuaidh fiú i Luimneach agus an Clár, agus ar Mhám Conaireach. Bhí sé go diail abalta leas-ainm nea - dhíobháileach a chumadh. Thaithníodh ceol agus rince leis agus cleachta. Meala mór a bhás do Mháire agus dá gclann Muireann, Caoimhín, Séamus agus Seán. Fuair Eibhlín Ní Shé ón mBaile Loisce bás in Óispidéal an Daingin le déanaí. Bhí an- aithne agam uirthi mar bhí sí ar scoil i gceárd scoil an Daingin. Bhíodh a súile ag gáirí go minic. Is cuimhin liom an lá go raibh gáire mór ag gach éinne mar b’í an t-aon duine sa rang go raibh an freagra ceart aici ar cheist matamaitice. Tá a tuistí a máthair, Caitlín na n-eachtraithe agus a hathair Maidhc sna Flaithis maraon lena deirfiúr Caitlín. Maireann
a deirféaracha Siobhán, Áine, Nóirín,Treasa Máire agus deartháracha Séan, Donal Gearóid agus Pádraig. Beannacht an Tiarna ar a hanam.
