Dingle Man Organises Concert To Thank Air Ambulance They will be joined by well-known fiddle player Máire Breathnach, singer Laurence Courtney, Niamh Varian Barry, Peter Staunton and Michael Herihy himself who will play the button accordion. There will also be two World Champion Irish dancers, Órlaith and Caoimhe O'Neill performing.

The owner of a well-known music shop in Dingle is hosting an online concert on Saturday, March 5th to raise funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance. Michael Herlihy from Siopa Ceoil Dingle was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick in July of 2021 after experiencing severe chest pains. The Irish Community Air Ambulance is Ireland’s first and only charity-funded Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Air Ambulance. It works in partnership with the National Ambulance Service and responds to serious incidents and medical emergencies from its base in Rathcool in Co Cork. It was tasked to 512 incidents during 2021. Michael Herlihy has been hosting live traditional music concerts in his shop for years attracting tourists from all over the world. His nephew Paddy O’Neill is part of the Limerick-based trad band The Fadas who came up with the idea for the fundraising event. The band is made up of Timmy McKenna, Noreen Nash, Ita O Donnell, Nives Carroll, Fr Danny Devitt, Maria Hughes and Paddy O'Neill.

Michael said, “I can’t praise the Irish Community Air Ambulance enough. I started to get really bad chest pains and my friend called an ambulance. They were able to deal with the pain but there was talk that I would have to go to hospital in either Tralee, Limerick or Cork. Next thing I knew I was in the sports field in Dingle and the helicopter had landed. The pilot and the paramedics were outstanding. I arrived at the hospital in Limerick 20 minutes later where I underwent a procedure. The journey by road would have taken two hours at least which is a long time to wait. I’m doing really well now and the concert promises to be a great night which I’m really looking forward to.”

this wonderful concert to be able to bring hope when it’s needed most.” The concert from Siopa Ceoil Dingle will be live streamed from 8pm until 9.30pm on Saturday March 5th. It can be viewed on www.tvlive. ie/siopa To make a donation visit https:// communityairambulance.ie

CEO of the Irish Community Air Ambulance, Micheál Sheridan said, “We’re often called to incidents in rural parts of the country and we were tasked to 116 separate incidents in Kerry during 2021. Michael was one of those calls and we’re delighted to see him doing so well. Cardiac arrests, heart attacks and strokes accounted for a third of all our taskings last year. Every minute counts in these situations which is why it’s so important to get to a specialist hospital quickly. Each mission costs approximately €3,500 and we rely solely on donations and fundraisers like

Some Juicy Tips to Chew On!

created to be chewed to enjoy the taste experience as well as to benefit from the nutrients within the food.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

To perfect the art of chewing, set aside time to eat in a relaxed setting. Eating without distractions such as mobile phones, TV and computer screens will help to be more mindful of chewing. Once food is in the mouth, close it! Much of the burping that occurs after meals is swallowed air making its way out again – not a complement to the chef as we are often told! Chew each mouthful around 35 times until it is ground down to a fine paste. Finish chewing and swallowing completely before taking the next bite. As well as preparing food for proper digestion, you are also allowing signals to register in the brain when you have eaten enough. People who eat slowly and chew food properly consume less calories and get more satisfaction from their food. Avoid drinking liquids 15 minutes before and after meals. This allows the stomach the space and time to digest your food properly. Your salivary juices are all the liquid you need.

We live in a fast world where many aspects of our day go by at breakneck speed. Fast food, fast eating and fast chewing has sped down the superhighway of modern living so quickly that the average time we spend eating our main meal is just 11 minutes! Breakfast and lunch are averaging at a mind-boggling pace of two minutes per meal. Not only is speedeating a choking hazard, eating too fast creates digestive troubles and greatly impacts on other areas of health and well-being in the long run. The old saying "you are what you eat" should ideally be replaced with "you are what you absorb" - not as catchy but much more accurate! Chewing food is the first step to breaking down food in preparation for its digestion and complete assimilation as useful nutrients your body needs. The mouth is prepped for chewing well before the first forkful. Thinking of food - its aroma, colour and texture stimulates the production of saliva and digestive enzymes. Preparing and cooking food prolongs this process, better preparing us for the meal ahead - another plus for home -cooking! The saliva we produce is much more than drool as it contains powerful anti-bacterial agents to help prevent food borne illnesses, it contains anti-fungal and anti-viral chemicals too and provides a liquid base to ease swallowing. Chewing not only helps digestion it also supports the immune system in this way. Digestive enzymes in the mouth, such as amylase, help to break down carbohydrates - grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. The end products of carbohydrates are mainly glucose and fibre, along with vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients. The more you chew your food the more saliva and digestive enzymes will be produced, making it easier for you to fully digest, absorb and benefit from these foods. Poorly digested food can remain in your stomach or large intestine for longer periods rotting away before it eventually passes. This can be felt as bloating, gas, indigestion and heartburn. The digestion of proteins such as meat and fish begins in the stomach where powerful enzymes and stomach acid fizzle it down to tiny pieces. When you gulp down large pieces of these proteins, without chewing properly - the stomach has to produce a larger volume of acidic juices in an attempt to break it down. Chewing meat slowly and steadily not only helps the stomach but also increases the surface area of the meat exposed to these juices aiding its efficient digestion. Incomplete digested foods, in particular animal-derived proteins, provide a putrefying feast for unfriendly bacteria and other micro-organisms living inside the digestive tract. Feeding these critters encourages an overgrowth of unwelcome residents and increases the risk of inflammatory digestive disorders Crohn’s disease, colitis, diverticular disease and cancer. Most factory-made foods are designed to taste great for the first few bites. After that, it becomes uninteresting and bland, therefore you swallow and want a fresh bite. It is almost impossible to continue chewing junk food as it loses flavour quickly and becomes quite disgusting (try it!). Not surprising, most junk food does not require much chewing as it has been created to be eaten quickly, without much thought. Real foods, on the other hand, remain interesting and tasty all the way through the chewing process. Some natural foods such as wholegrains and vegetables become sweeter when chewed sufficiently, as the carbohydrate breaks down into sugars such as glucose, which the body needs for energy. Natural food is 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Chewing slowly is relaxing and reduces stress levels - a stark contrast to the “dine and dash” model of mealtimes today. Being grateful for your food, whether in prayer or in thought will help slow the mind and raise your awareness of eating mindfully. Inhale the aroma -the simple act of smelling your food will switch your salivary glands on and get your stomach ready for the meal you are about to enjoy. Mincing words and mincing food are two separate activities – keep them that way! Don’t speak your mouth full – your mother was right! You’ll end up swallowing more air and cannot chew properly while talking. Finally, to sum up in the style of Simon and Garfunkel - “Slow down, you chew too fast, got to make this morsel last”, do it, chew it and you will be Feelin’ Groovy all day long! illegal burning can also render the land of your neighbours ineligible for payment, and

where it is identified that lands were burnt during the closed season, this may result in such land being inspected by Department officials.

2022 BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS

Similarly with hedge cutting, the season closed on 1 March and will remain so until the 31 August.

The Department of Agriculture opened the application process for the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and the other related schemes for 2022. Over the coming days, farmers will be receiving a BPS information pack in the post containing their maps and land details for 2022. The pack will also include a useful help sheet. This information will assist farmers and their advisors to make their online application. The closing date for BPS applications is Monday 16th May 2022. Farmers are urged to avail of the early opening of the application process now rather than waiting until nearer the closing date. All applications are on-line as of 2015, and this makes the process simpler than previous. There is no longer a need to complete amend or sign awkward forms or amend maps. It is all done on the agfood.ie online system, by your advisor. Farmers can apply for all elements of Direct Payments (BPS, Greening, Young Farmers Scheme, Protein Aid, National Reserve, transferring of entitlements) online. This helps to ensure that the Department can process all applications under these schemes as efficiently as possible. Farmers are reminded to check that they have correctly applied for the Areas of Natural Constraint Scheme (ANC), if applicable. Annual payment claims for the Straw Incorporation Measure, Green Low-carbon Agrienvironment Scheme (GLAS) and the Organic Farming Scheme can also be made online. Over the coming days, farmers will be receiving their 2022 BPS packs in the post. Since 2018, all these applications must be made online as required by EU Regulations. Thus, there is no paper application form in the pack. Full Terms and Conditions are available online, or on request as outlined below. All farmers will also be notified over the coming weeks of the current value of their payment entitlements (2022) through agfood.ie. For those wishing to trade in Entitlements, whether to buy, sell or lease in or out, the closing date for the receipt of completed online applications to transfer entitlements for the 2022 scheme year is also 16 May 2022. The application to transfer entitlements must be submitted using the transfer of entitlement online facility. The department will only accept transfers requests using the online facility. Paper transfer applications are therefore no longer available on the department website. END OF BURNING SEASON APPROACHES The Department of Agriculture advises farmers in relation to agricultural and eligible forestry land which is burnt during the closed season is liable to severe action and penalties. The last date for burning this year is 28th February or a little over 10 days. DAFM has now activated its Fire Danger Rating System for the season and advises that Forest owners and managers should check and update fire plans and other relevant contingencies such as insurance, firebreaks, access and water points, and private helicopter contracts etc., so as to be prepared well in advance of high fire risk phases Everyone should at this time of year be mindful of the damage caused by burning. It is also more important than ever that no one should start an illegal fire in the countryside as such activity will cause the unnecessary diversions of emergency service resources. People are also asked to be vigilant, to report any suspicious activity to An Garda Síochána, and to report any uncontrolled or unattended fires immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services via 112/999 service. Farmers are reminded of the specific negative consequences of burning illegally, as follows: •

there is a risk of prosecution,

such land is not eligible for payment under the Basic Payment Scheme and other area-based schemes,

inclusion of illegally burnt land in the 2021 Basic Payment Scheme application may result in reduced payment and penalties under this scheme and the other area-based schemes, for example Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme,

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The burning of vegetation is controlled by the Wildlife Acts. It is an offence under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976 (amended by Section 46 of the Wildlife Act, 2000) to burn, from 01 March to 31 August in any year, any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated. Individuals who are found to burn vegetation within that prohibited period are liable to prosecution by An Garda Síochána or by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). DAFM has no role in regard to prosecutions. Land that is illegally burnt is ineligible for payment under the area-based schemes. Applicants under the Basic Payment Scheme and other area-based schemes are obliged to comply with Cross Compliance which includes requirements in relation to the burning of vegetation and the consequential damage to designated land. Where an applicant is found, at inspection or on receipt of a Cross Report from NPWS, to have been responsible for breaching these requirements, a penalty can be applied to payments due under these schemes. Land found to have been burned during the specified closed season for burning is considered automatically ineligible under the various support schemes. AGROFORESTRY: UP TO €6,220/HA Agroforestry is the management and integration of trees, crops and/or livestock on a plot of land. The combination of forestry and agriculture can be completed in a mutually beneficial way. According to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, there many benefits of agroforestry, including: •

Provides renewable energy, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels;

Can produce veneer quality timber;

Improves land drainage;

Prevents nutrient runoff and reduces sedimentation of nearby watercourses;

Enhances animal welfare;

Improves biodiversity and habitats;

Can enhance the landscape.

Agroforestry can involve pasture, grazing, silage and hay. It is a requirement that the tree stocking rate is between 400-1000 trees per hectare. The minimum plot size is 0.5ha with a tree-to-tree width of 20m. You will have to thin out trees in time, reducing numbers to between 160-250 trees per hectare. This will allow enough light to filter through the canopy, enabling continued grass growth. You must protect trees against browsing animals with tree shelters, fencing or both. When producing hay and/or silage, farmers must ensure that they use appropriate machinery to avoid damage to the trees. While there is a range of benefits to agroforestry, few farmers are interested in the grant scheme. Farmers have the option to apply for a grant to facilitate the combination of forestry and grassland farming. This funding is from the agroforestry scheme, under the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme. This scheme funding contributes to establishing and maintaining forestry on your farm. The grant aid is set at €6,220/ha. The DAFM pays premiums over a fiveyear period at a rate of €645/ha. Oak, sycamore and cherry, including 15% fruit and nut trees, are acceptable species for grant aid, but other species may be considered on a site-by-site basis. Large plants should be used through pit planting, ranging from 90cm to 120cm. Grazing of animals such as sheep or domestic young stock is permitted during spring and summer for the first six to eight years. Once the trees are of sufficient size, you can replace tree shelters with plastic mesh, and you may introduce larger stock. Silage and hay production is still allowable,

if possible but appropriate machinery must be used when cutting hay or silage to avoid damage to existing trees. Agroforestry requires free draining mineral soils. These soils should have no extra requirement for drainage or fertiliser to promote tree growth. You may have to add Nitrogen to soils in some instances to promote further grass growth. A rate of up to 100kg N/ha is advised. However, you have to assess on a site-by-site basis. The Woodland Improvement Scheme is another element of agroforestry. The Woodland Improvement Scheme provides financial support to forest owners to help meet the cost of thinning broadleaf forests and broadleaf mixtures.

This scheme allows two thinning interventions for all broadleaf and broadleaf mixed forests. Thinning leads to a series of benefits, such as landscape improvement and biodiversity enhancement. The DAFM pays fixed grant aid at a rate of €750/ha. You must make an application for approval through a registered forester. The future CAP is showing signs which will allow a proportion of land to have scrub and still be eligible as an acre. This has the potential to add an extra 55,000 eligible hectares in the next CAP. According to ARC2020’s Oliver Moore, Ireland’s current Agroforestry Scheme should ideally be lengthened and broadened. Support for 10 to 15 years is optimal. The current time frame for support is for five years only.

Michael Greaney Ltd

Agri Contractor Ballyguin, Brandon, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Developing a new Forestry Strategy is currently underway, which is a key commitment for Project Woodland. The DAFM is due to public this in June 2022. This project involves a review and refresh of processes and procedures and includes outside stakeholder participation to bring an independent perspective. It is a task-driven process with clear deliverables and milestones.

Any ideas, suggestions or problems, we want to hear from you. We can only make things better by working together! Great news. Because the restrictions have been lifted, we will once again have a St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Thursday, March 17 at 3 pm, starting at the Primary School and around the village to the Playground where we have refreshments. After 2 years, we deserve a bit of a celebration! We would like as many groups as possible to participate- young, older, it doesn’t matter. One of my friends says “The best thing to have is fun!”, so let’s do it. We will also be having a raffle on the day, draw to take place at the playground immediately after the parade. If you could let the office know if your group is marching, it would be helpful (066 7139422). Discontinued Recycling Service Unfortunately during renovations, we have to discontinue recycling service. We are looking at an alternative site. The services are provided at both Dillons and Higgins in Tralee. We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have it rectified when the clubrooms are finished. The office is open. As with any other businesses in the village, please wear a mask and use the hand sanitiser provided when you enter. Also only ONE PERSON at a time to enter the office please....this is for your safety as well as ours during these rising numbers of Covid. The Clubrooms are still not in use but the West End hall is. If you need to use a hall for anything please call us at the office to book the West End hall when available. All of our regular renters are now using the West End hall until further notice so slots will be limited. We would like to say a huge Congratulations and well done to Clarissa Michaux with her Academy of Dance Students on a magnificent show at Siamsa over last weekend. The dancers as usual were beautiful in their costumes, their dancing was superb and the overall performance by every single dancer was fabulouswell done to everyone involved in the 12 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor BIRTHDAY GREETINGS Birthday greetings to Breda Quirke, Curra, Camp on celebrating 60 years young on Thursday last. Breda joined her lady friends for their morning swim at Garrahies Gap and afterwards all enjoyed lovely refreshments. Looking out onto the tranquil waters of Tralee bay what an idyllic setting to celebrate a special birthday.

elected to play into the storm. Camp soaked up early pressure as Ella expertly read the game and got solid assistance from Niamh and Lia. Maebh in the middle of the park passed well and wingers Ellie Fitzgerald and Muireann launched strong attacks giving the clever running Maria and Aoibhinn couple of half chances.

In the second half the Juniors continued but Ballyhar was now pushing more but Aodhan Murray played brilliantly as centre back.

Nil nil at the break.

Luke Cuddy then scored a very good goal by dribbling the goalkeeper and finishing beautifully.

Fresh legs in two girls making their Camp debuts Meseret and Eve gave us great energy.A corner from Meabh and Lia pounced to put us 1-0 up! A great passing movement from Aoibhinn and Muireann saw Maria strike a rocket just wide.

Go Maire tú an Chéad!

Fenit now began to run hard at us and Niamh raced back to clear for a corner. But Fenit persisted and got their reward with a good strike to level the game at one a piece.Both teams had spells of possession and when it looked like heading for a draw Camp upped the ante and Meabh controlled well, spun and unleashed a bullet to the top corner. 2-1

JEWEL OF THE KINGDOM Matt Leen said it all in his wonderful article on Tommy Doyle in the Kerry vs Dublin Match Programme recently. All so true to Tommys form, the story of a legend in Kerry football. Concluding the article - Tommys roll of honour in his great career, 7 all-Ireland Senior Medals, 3 u21 All-Ireland Medals, 2 Vocational All-Ireland Medals, 2 National League Medals, 3 All-Star awards, 2 Kerry Co. Championship Medals with West Kerry, 1 Senior Club Championship, 3 Intermediate Championships, 4 West Kerry Championships, and 4 West Kerry Leagues with Annascaul. Tommy Doyle made 41 championship appearances for Kerry and the Iron Man from Camp is a Jewel of the Kingdom.And so say all of us in the parish of Annascaul and Camp. Great article, Matt, a collectors item, one for the archives for sure. CAMP JUNIORS FC - UPDATES U-12 Premier Girls League: Fenit 1 Camp 3 A wild windswept afternoon in Fenit with heavy underfoot conditions and cold showers sweeping in from the Atlantic surely comes under the definition of "character building " in some coaching manual!!! In fairness to both teams,they just got on with it! Captain and Keeper Orla won the toss and

Just before half time then Allyn O’Shea made it 4 - 0 to the Juniors with a great shot from the left hand side that went over the keeper.

Orla's ball handling and kickouts esp in the first half gave a solid platform and she wasnt found wanting making one particularly great save.

play with Jack Power as attacking mid, Mark Van as central mid and captain Conall Mehigan as holding mid who always gave Camp the numbers advantage with his running ability.

Camp pressed on and a hard working midfield turned over Fenit for Meabh to score her second as Camp won 3-1 against an unlucky Fenit side.

Mikey O’Leary then got a couple of chances but his good shots were saved by the goalie and Jack Power was unlucky to not get a penalty for a clear foul in the box. The Juniors were getting a bit tired on the muddy pitch but kept playing well and Mark Van scored another great goal with a shot from long distance. Finally Michael Keane scored the 7 - 0 tap in for Camp on a great assist by Aodhan Murray from the right wing. Great match also by Jago Brodie as a goalkeeper in the first half and as a winger in the second half and good performances by Eoin Moriarty, Jack Cull and Barry Henegan.

Thanks to Fenit and ref Thomas Sheehy who constantly encouraged both teams. Panel: Captain Orla Curran, Ella Wallace, Niamh O Callaghan, Lia Sheehy, Eve O Sullivan,Ellie Fitzgerald, Meabh Kennedy, Muireann Mehigan, Meseret O Brien, Maria Keane and Aoibhinn O Callaghan. Thanks to Katrina Mehigan, Catherine Keane, David Wallace and Paddy Curran for all their help along with the other parents who supported the girls. It was also great to see Robert Keane,recently selected for the Kennedy Cup panel (along with Darragh Murphy) cheering on his sister and her team mates !!!

Ger Callaghan: Best for Camp Ella Wallace and Orla Curran BOYS U14 Ballyhar - U14 Camp Juniors : 0 - 7. Great day out for the Juniors in Ballyhar with thanks to our hosts for organising this challenge match between both Div 1 teams. With a number of our attacking players missing our team decided to focus on passing the ball as much as possible to create scoring chances and see if that could get us a result against a team we beat 7-1 in the league. The boys were all interested in trying it and our focus on passing soon paid off with 3 great goals in the first 15 minutes. First a beautifully curled kick by Mark Vansteenkiste went it from the corner spot and after that goal we scored twice from 2 assists through the centre. Adam O’Brien and Jack Power each scored on assists by Jack Power and Mark Van. The game was good to watch with flowing passing over multiple stations by Camp Juniors. The whole team passed the ball well and the new midfield for this occasion linked up the

CTCD/DPTA wants to hear from you – what is your vision for tourism on the Dingle Peninsula in the short, medium and long term. “Who are our best visitors, how best can we improve and how will we become sustainable post-Covid and for the next generation. Despite Covid challenges, we will create a variety of different ways to hear from you – businesses, community development groups, local agencies and host communities…….. working towards Corca Dhuibhne 2030 / Dingle Peninsula 2030”. Our Sustainable Tourism Journey: Responsible Tourism This week we look at Responsible Tourism and so you might ask – “What is the difference between Sustainable and Responsible Tourism”? It is understood that Sustainable Tourism is the goal while Responsible Tourism is the management or stewardship of best practice within the destination. So, what does Sustainable Tourism mean once again? "Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities". (United Nations World Tourism Organisation, 2021) While Responsible Tourism is about "Making better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit." Responsible Tourism requires that operators, hoteliers, governments, local people and tourists take responsibility, take action to make tourism more sustainable”. The World Travel Market adopted the Cape Town Declaration definition of Responsible Tourism for its World Responsible Tourism Day which encourages the industry to take responsibility for making tourism more sustainable and demonstrate their responsibility. The Cape Town Declaration recognises that Responsible Tourism takes a variety of forms, it is characterised by travel and tourism which: • minimises negative economic, environmental and social impacts; • generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well-being of host communities, improves working conditions and access to the industry; • involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life changes; • makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage, to the maintenance of the world's diversity; • provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural,

Congratulations to Kieran Keane, Deerpark, Lispole who won the Munster indoor championships in Nenagh representing Riocht a/c in the shot putt under 15 with a throw of 14.16m.

From the 1901 Census in West Kerry

Boat Builders Apart from Frank Goodwin above there were other boat builders in West Kerry in 1901. Michael Driscoll, 26, recorded his occupation on the census form as ‘Boatmaker’. He was living in the home of his in-laws, Patrick and Mary Dennehy in the townland of Illauncaum.

Ted Creedon This is the fourth article in a series based on the 1901 Census in West Kerry which was taken on Sunday, 31 March. (Incidentally, the 2022 Census is being taken on Sunday, 3 April.) So far we’ve been reading about unusual or unfamiliar occupations of people on the peninsula although some respondents provided information in the census form which is not related to any occupation. In this issue we look at some occupations relating to maritime matters. Sailmaker The only person to declare their occupation as ‘Sailmaker’ in the census of West Kerry in 1901 was Patrick Sullivan, 18, who lived in the Dingle lighthouse with his parents John and Mary. What isn’t stated in the census form is that John Sullivan was also a sailmaker. Father and son made many a sail for local fishing vessels over the years. Patrick married Elizabeth Collins from Rosscarbery, County Cork, and she was a nurse and mid-wife in Dingle Hospital. Their first child, Jackie, was born in the lighthouse on 11 July, 1912 – the first of seven children. Jackie spent his working life in the town and was known to all as ‘Jackie the Lighthouse’. Light-keepers The above John Sullivan was the light-keeper in Dingle lighthouse. A former merchant seaman with a Master’s ticket, he was appointed to the position in the late 19th century. He replaced Michael Long who was the first light-keeper following the construction of the lighthouse in 1887.

James Kennedy, 23, of Cliddaun, near Dingle, gave ‘Boat Builder, as his profession. It’s not certain if Patrick Moriarty, 18, of Holyground, Dingle, was a boat builder as he registered his occupation as ‘Boat Carpenter’. On the same form his father, John, stated ‘Boat Owner’ in the occupation column – the only one to do so in the West Kerry census. Another oneoff profession in that family was that of Timothy Moriarty who was a ‘Mechanical Engineer’. Response to ‘Sea Diver’. There was an item in an earlier article about John Brick from Ballyguin, near Brandon, who gave his occupation as ‘Sea Diver’ on the census form. A reader in Cloghane, Kevin Russell, contacted West Kerry Live suggesting John Brick may have been involved in salvaging cargo from the Port Yarrock. She was wrecked in Brandon Bay/ Kilcummin Strand in January 1894 with the loss of her crew of twenty. She was carrying over 2,000 tons of copper ore and the salvage operation ‘lasted for years’ according to Kevin.

Scoil an Ghleanna An Bhunscoil Ghaeltachta is sine sa tír Ireland’s Oldest Gaeltacht Primary School

The Tearaght lighthouse began operating in 1870. There were three light-keepers on the island on Census night in 1901. The head keeper was James Connell, 35, a native of Cork. The other two were James Roddy, 44, originally from County Louth and another Corkman, John Connolly, 21. Nine years before the census the Tearaght light-keeper and his son disappeared. It was believed they were searching for seabirds’ eggs and fell down a cliff and were drowned. Pilots There are three marine pilots recorded in the 1901 census and all were residing in the Maharees area. There was a family of seven living on Illaunimmil, one of the Seven Hogs, off the Maharees, according to the census. The head of the house was Michael Leary, 50, a widower whose occupation was ‘Farmer and Pilot’. (But there was never a family on Illaunimmil, according to retired pilot Bob Goodwin. There were two families on Oileán tSeannaig but that island isn’t even mentioned in the census. Those families were the Learys and the Goodwins. The Learys moved to the mainland in 1928 and the Goodwins moved to the mainland in 1953, according to Bob). Frank Goodwin, 50, who lived in Fahamore was a ‘Boat Builder and Pilot’. He and his wife Ellie, 30, had four children and the youngest, named George, was aged 1. Robert Goodwin, 30, lived in Kilshannig and he was a ‘Farmer and Pilot’. He and his wife Catherine had three children and their youngest was also aged 1.

Scéalta ón bPobalscoil Aisling Ní Dhubhaigh & Eibhlín Ní Dhuibhginn Bús tallainne i bP.C.D.!

Buaiteoir an rannóg Ceol Aonarach Sinsear, Kaylin Ní Ghealbháin

Comórtas ‘Scléip’ Gael Linn

Cur agus Cúiteamh.

Ar an dara lá de mhí Feabhra chuireamar uirlisí, brógaí rince agus tinsil i gcúl an bhus agus bhuaileamar an bhealaigh mhóir go Clasach, Cluain Tarbh, Baile Átha Cliath. Shroicheamar an laithreán timpeall ar a 10 a chlog agus thosaigh Comórtas na Maidine san amharclann ar a 10.30.

Shroich an foireann sóisear díospóireachta comórtas Craobh Díospóireachta Uí Chadhain ar an 31ú Eanair 2022! Bhí an comórtas ar siúl in Óstán an Hudson Bay i mBaile Átha Cliath. Scoláirí bliain a 1, Sibéal Ní Shé, Éimhín Dalby agus Ruairí Ó hUanacháin a bhí ar an bhfoireann. Bhí ceithre scoileanna in iomaíocht sa chomórtas. Bhí argóint cliste, cleachtaithe acu ach faraoir ní raibh an bua ag foireann na Pobalscoile.

Chuir an chéad grúpa, ‘Mairéad, Katie agus Clare!’ ón dara bhliain tús iontach do thaispeántas na Pobalscoile lena rince ealaíonta sa rannóg rince cruthaitheach sóisear. Tamall ina dhiaidh sin bhí an rince cruthaitheach sinsir, na ‘Glee-caí’, a chuir dreas anamúil agus cruinn ar fáil don lucht féachana.

Fós féin, tá an scoil ar fad chomh-bhródúil astu, an craobh a shroiceadh. Bail ó Dhia orthu!

Lean an chomórtas ar aghaidh go dtí an chatagóir slua-amhránaíochta, agus ár ‘Spéirmnáibh’ ag tosnú le meascra Abba cleachtaithe agus ceolmhar. Bhogamar isteach go Halla Tom Corbett ansin chun ár dtacaíocht a thaispeáint dos na hiomaitheoirí sa rannóg ceol aonarach. Ar dtús, sa chatagóir sóisir chuir Méabh Ní Dhúbhda ar ár shuaimhneas sinn le leagan aoibhinn de ‘Black and White’ le Niall Horan ar an bhfliúit. Ansin thug Kaylin Ní Ghealbháin taispeántas draíochtúil dúinn ar an bpianó le ‘Interstellar’. Bhí briseadh lóin againn agus i ndiaidh sin léadh amach torthaí na maidine! Thosaigh Comórtas na hiarnóna san amharclann ansin. Bhaineamar ar fad ana thaitneamh as éisteacht le na bannaí ceoil bríomhara, ach go háirithe an banna ceoil vibey ‘Na Dwaynes’ ónár scoil féin! Tugadh léiriú maith ón scoil ó thús deiridh an lae ach b’iad na buaiteoirí sa chomórtas ná, Kaylin Ní Ghealbháin, Na Spéirmnáibh, Na Gleecaí agus an tarna áit bainte amach ag grúpa rince ‘Katie, Mairéad agus Clare!’ Ana lá ar fad a bhí ann agus ní bréag a rá nách bhfuil sárú ar ár múinteoir Deirdre ní Ghrainbhéil. Spreag sí sinn agus thug sí gach tacaíocht dúinn go léir ar an aistear spreagúil seo. Bhí comhrá againn le buaiteoir an rannóg Ceol Aonarach Sinsear, Kaylin Ní Ghealbháin ár sár phianadóir ó bhliain a 6. Dúirt sí go raibh sí ana neirbhíseach roimh an taispeántas agus go raibh sé saghas deacair uirthi toisc nach raibh a cairde ábalta dul léi chun tacaíocht a thabhairt di. Nuair a thosnaigh sí ag seinmt, amh, ní raibh sí neirbhíseach a thuilleadh. Bhí sí a rá gur chabhraigh tacaíocht an lucht féachana go mór léi. Thug sí taispeántas iontach ag léiriú an tallann atá aici ar an bpianó agus gan dabht thaitin sé le na moltóirí go léir!

Rith’s ag Rás Bhí craobh Lúthcleasaíochta faoi dhíon Cúige Mumhan ar siúl le déanaí in Aonach, i gCo. Thiobraid Árann agus bhí beirt ón scoil, Malachaí Ó Ciardubháin (Bliain a 5) agus Kieran Ó Catháin (Bliain a 1) ag glacadh páirt sa chomórtas. D’éirigh go hiontach leis an mbeirt acu! Bhain Malachaí an séú háit amach sa rás 800m faoi 20. Bhain Kieran an chéad áit amach sa chomórtas caitheamh méachain faoi 15. ‘Ba bhua iontach é, tá súil anois agam ar an gcomórtas náisiúnta a bhuachaint.’ Guímís gach ráth air. Níl aon dabht ach go raibh gáirí geala againn le coicís anuas idir ár néachtaí agus cóisir breá scoile chun iad a cheiliúradh.

Mhínigh sí dúinn nár ghlach sí páirt i gcomórtas ceol ar feadh i bhfad toisc nár éirigh go maith léi uair, ach dhein sí an cinneadh cuir isteach ar an gcomórtas ‘Scléip’ i mbliana toisc gurb é seo an bhliain deirneach go mbeadh an seans aici é a dhéanamh. “I didn't think i would win” - a dúirt sí linn. Bhí sí i dTacsaí nuair a bhfuair sí an glaoch gutháin go raibh an comórtas uile Éireann buaite aici. Baineadh geit mór aisti nuair a chuala sí! Dúirt Kaylin linn gur bhain sí taitneamh mór as an lá agus tá sé soiléir go bhfuil gaisce iontach bainte amach aici don scoil. Chomhgháirdeachas mór léi! Malachaí Ó Ciardubháin 20 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Lá le Bríde and Lá le Gobnait have passed us by. A group from Sacret Heart University came on 24 January and will stay until May. Their studies include Nursing, Health Assessment, Oceanography, Coastal Ecology as well as Catholic Intellectual and Religeous Traditions. They are most welcome and we hope they enjoy their stay in Dingle. We have big plans for the Díseart Gardens. More seats, benches and better lighting are planned. The bird bath will have to be fixed. Much gardening to be done – including a lavender bed. It is hoped to map the garden with the family trees. And thats just a few of the projects! We would also like to have our own source of power – and research has started on that. Colm Mac Gearailt's period with us as Poet in Residence will end at the beginning of March. He will do some workshops in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne during February. Butternut Squash, Bacon, Leek and Blue Cheese Pie By Mark Murphy,Dingle Cookery School soft. Add this the bowl with the squash and wipe down the pot. Put the pan back on over low heat add the butter and allow this to melt. Add the flour and stir with a wooden spoon. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the milk and whisk to break up any lumps. Cook for about 10 minutes or so. It will have thickened at this stage. Add this to the bowl and mix the ingredients together. Add the spinach and cheese and check for seasoning. Leave this for about an hour to cool. TO ASSEMBLE A creamy and filling pie, perfect for anytime of the day. Behind every good pie is a filling that leaves wanting another slice. This one definitely will have you wanting more. The silky texture and the sweetness of the butternut squash really comes into its own when you add something with some salty like the bacon and the blue cheese. If you are fan of blue cheese, you will love the creamy tanginess, if you are not a fan use a good farmhouse cheddar. The butter, flour and milk mixture (known as a roux) will hold the filling together when you slice it rather than watching it ooze out. Hope you love it. INGREDIENTS olive oil 1 squash, peeled and diced 200g bacon, chopped into lardons 1 onion, sliced 2 cloves of garlic, crushed

Roll the pastry out. Divide into two large rectangles. Brush the one of the sheets with egg wash. Place the squash mixture down the centre and leave some of the pastry at the sides and ends. Brush the other sheet with egg wash. Carefully layer it over the squash mixture. Press

the pastry the ends, seal this well. Use a fork to crimp the pastry sheets together. Carefully place this on a tray. Brush with egg wash and use a small knife to score and decorate the pastry. Place in the fridge for an hour if possible. TO COOK Preheat the oven to 190ºC. Put the pastry in the oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Small Changes The Vitality Of Trees

Photo: Mossy Donegan

Indications of how common trees once were in our landscape and their influence on Irish society is written large in our history, culture, heritage and folklore. Of the 62,000 townland names in Ireland, 13,000 mention trees. Each letter of the ogham alphabet is named after a different native tree and our folklore and traditions are littered with references to trees e.g. the battle of Maigh Cuilenn (Plain of Holly), the diet of acorns eaten by the salmon of knowledge or the tradition of bringing furze blossom into the house on May Day to bring luck for the Summer ahead. Every native tree had its uses e.g. ash for hurls, hazel for construction etc. while many Brehon laws dealt specifically with trees (the severity of penalties for damaging trees was reflective of the importance of the tree.) After the ice caps retreated over 12 thousand years ago and the climate improved, trees began to colonise the Irish landscape to the point where over 80% of the country was under forest cover. Pioneer species such as juniper, willow and birch were succeeded by elm, hazel and ash forests in the east, oak and hazel in the west while Scots pine and birch forests colonised the higher exposed areas of the west. Trees were of considerable nutritional, symbolic and ritual significance to the first settlers in this country over 9000 years ago and so the country remained predominantly under forest cover until the arrival of Neolithic farmers. They began the clearance of land for agriculture at a time which coincided with a change in climate towards increased rainfall leading to the formation of peatlands. By 1600 less than 20% of Ireland was covered in forest. Deforestation continued unabated as large tracts of land were cleared for Plantations in the 17th century and Irish trees were exported to Great Britain for use in construction (up to one third of the entire Dingle Peninsula was still covered in trees until the middle of the 17th Century). Trees were also required for construction, fuel etc. by the large Irish population and also in demand for the Irish coopering, tanning and shipbuilding industries. As a result Irelands forest cover was only about 1% of land area at the beginning of the 20th Century. In order to provide employment and to become self-sufficient in timber for construction, tree planting has been encouraged since the inception of the Irish state in the 1920s and has been all but privatised since the 1990s due to incentivised schemes. This has brought Irish forest cover up to approximately 11% presently (the average European country has 30% forest cover). A 10% increase looks impressive on paper but many state forests were established on marginal land and over half of the current forest cover is non-native Sitka spruce, chosen because it is fast growing and exposure tolerant (less than a quarter of Irish forests are broadleaf varieties). According to the National Parks and Wildlife Service the dominance of non-native conifer plantations, where plots of trees of the same age are planted, thinned, generally clear-felled after 30 or 40 years and then replanted is one of the biggest 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

pressures on EU protected habitats such as peatlands and semi natural grasslands. These plantations negatively impact biodiversity, increase the acidity levels in groundwater and have adverse social impacts on communities such as those documented by the Save Leitrim campaign (www.saveleitrim.ie) However, natural and well planned woodlands and forest (both commercial and non-commercial), provide many ecosystem services. These include improved air quality, moderation of local air temperatures, storm water reduction and freshwater filtration. Native woodlands increase biodiversity as they host microbes, plants and animals adapted to rely on them. A single mature tree can host hundreds of insect, lichen, bird, fern and fungal species. They also link habitats within the wider landscape. Trees provide food, shelter and amenity space for people as well as being a source of commodities such renewable construction materials, renewable packaging and carbon neutral fuel. Furthermore, research now confirms what our ancestors knew intuitively – that being surrounded by trees improves our physical and mental wellbeing. Trees release compounds with antibacterial properties called phytonocides which stimulate our immune systems and studies also demonstrate that simply sitting and looking at trees reduces blood pressure and stress. It is the ability of trees to sequester carbon that is currently receiving most attention. In 2019, as part of the Climate Action Plan, the government pledged that 440 million trees would be planted in Ireland by 2040 (with at least 30% broadleaf varieties) to bring forest cover in Ireland to almost 20% (still well below the current European average). This pledge equates to 22 million trees a year (or a space equivalent to 6000 Croke parks). This target has been missed for the third year in a row with tree planting currently 60% behind schedule. The reasons for this shortfall include licensing issues that are bringing the Irish forestry sector to its knees (an article in the Irish Examiner 30/9/2020 - Why is Ireland running out of Timber?, is a little out of date now but is provides a clear and concise overview of this problem), arguments over who owns the rights to the carbon credits (state or private landowner), competition with agriculture and the availability of suitable land, exclusion and penalties for scrub from agricultural payments (low woodlands less than 5m in height, usually consisting of hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn or willow) and objections from communities who can see the effects of badly planned non-native conifer plantations. Large scale planting of trees requires expertise to address the implications for biodiversity, ecosystems, the long term success of trapping carbon and impact on communities but while the government and state agencies try to overcome the stumbling blocks to achieve their goals there is a lot we can do as individuals. If every individual in Ireland planted just one each of our 21 native trees then 140 million trees would be planted (21trees.ie). If everyone planted just one tree a year, a quarter of the annual national target would be achieved straight away! Bare root season does not finish until early April and native trees such as blackthorn, cherry, holly, rowan, spindle or oak (if you have the space) can be purchased for between 1 and 3 euro (futureforests.ie). If you are adept at taking cuttings then there is still time to take hardwood cuttings so you can plant hedges and trees for free! Planting or gifting trees to mark milestones is also a lovely option. In the Philippines all secondary school students must plant ten trees in order to graduate and in Wales two trees are planted for every child born or adopted. Projects such as Reforest Nation plant trees for Christmas, anniversary, memorial gifts etc. and send a certificate to the beneficiary. There is also an enterprising group of transition year students in PCD selling trees for gifting. Acres of land are not required to plant trees - pocketforests.ie are creating small native forests in spaces as small as 6m2. Planting on boundaries/hedgerows is also a viable option for farmers and landowners – how many trees could be grown in West Kerry by just planting one in the corners of every field? There is also huge potential for planting in public spaces e.g. margins of sports grounds, shared green spaces etc. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now – it is worth taking this Chinese proverb literally.

SEAI Retrofitting Scheme The government has announced new supports for homeowners to undertake home energy upgrades (often called retrofits) for warmer, healthier and more comfortable homes, with lower energy bills. This will help reach the 2030 target of half a million homes being upgraded to a Building Energy Rating (BER) of B2. This is a positive step towards transitioning to a low carbon society. Some key measures include: Increased grant levels of up to 50% of the cost of a typical deep retrofit

Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh 23-27 Feabhra /February 2022

WE’RE BACK!

TÁIMÍD THARNAIS!

We were the last festival in West Kerry before lockdown, and now, with only a few days to go ‘til Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh, we are one of the first events to come back! Tickets are running out the door and we can’t wait to welcome all the absolute legends of musicians who are joining us to teach in classes and perform on stage, and also to welcome all the participants and everyone who comes to support and share in the events.

Ba é Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh ceann de na féilte deireannach a tiolóladh i gCorca Dhuibhne díreach roimis teacht na paindéime, agus Hup, seo muid, tharnais arís, mar cheann de na céad féilte a bheidh ar bun ó árdaíodh na srianta! Tá sciob sceab ar na tícéidí don réimse iontach imeachtaí a bheidh againn beo, le chéile, ar an láthair, anso i gCorca Dhuibhne ón gCéadaoin an 23ú go dtí an Domhnach an 27ú Feabhra! Táimíd go léir ar bís agus is fada linn go gcuirimíd fáilte tharnais roimis ár gcairde ceolmhara a bheidh ag múineadh agus ar stáite sna ceolchoirmeacha, agus roimis gach éinne a ghlacann páirt nó a thagann chuig ár gcuid imeachtaí.

We have missed live music so much and to celebrate the return to near enough normality we have a fantastic lineup of local, national and international artists for our concerts. Starting on Thursday the 24th in Áras Bhréanainn in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh two of Shetland’s finest fiddlers, visiting West Kerry for the the first time, bring us a concert of Shetland music. On Friday February 25th in Halla na Feothanaí, we present Mary McNamara from Clare her daughter Sorcha Costello who was TG4’s young musician of the year in 2021, Angelina Carberry Musician of the year 2021, Mickey Dunne, piper and teacher, Donegal fiddler Ciarán Ó Maonaigh with his wife, dancer and concertina player, Caitlín Nic Gabhann, Eithne Ní Chatháin who has recently released her latest CD, and accordion player Conor Connolly from east Galway. On Saturday we have Matt Molloy with John Carty and Brian McGrath, Aiden Connolly a young Dublin fiddler, Diarmuid Ó Meachair from Cúil Aodha on box, Nicole Ní Dhúbhshláine & Kyle Macaulay young musicians from Corca Dhuibhne and Donegal, and renowned local singer Éilís Ní Chinnéide accompanied by the one and only Gerry O’Beirne. Take in the views and the fresh air on Saturday when Maidhc Ó Mainín leads a guided cultural walk, with a few surprises along the way, leaving from Tig Áine at 1.45pm. That same afternoon at 2pm Matt Molloy joins Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich to talk about this music and flute playing, a brilliant opportunity for anyone who wants to understand more about one of the finest flute players who has ever lived. At 3pm, also on Saturday, Maurice and Kevin Henderson give a workshop about Shetland music and tunes, bring your instruments! Information about these and other events can be found at www.scoilcheoil.com as well as links to purchase tickets. Don’t delay booking as numbers are limited. One of the best things about Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh, and one of the main reasons we set it up in the first place, was to inspire young people to play our traditional music and to enjoy it. Thousands of young people have passed through the classes over the years and this year, things have come full circle. Nicole Ní Dhubhshláine, who attend Scoil Cheoil as a young child in 2005, is teaching at this year’s Scoil Cheoil, what a journey she has taken in the 17 years since we started. Nicole’s concertina class is now sold out, but don’t worry, she can be heard at Saturday nights concert, well done Nicole. Looking forward to seeing you all, Breanndán, Ciara and Niamh. scoilcheoilciarrai@gmail.com

Know Your Rights: Social Welfare Payments and COVID-19 With all the changes over the last two years, it’s difficult to keep up to date on current entitlements. Deirdre Vann Bourke , Kerry Citizens Information Manager, briefly describes the main payments for people affected by COVID-19 for people of working age (between the ages of 18 and 66). For more in-depth information, or advice on your specific circumstances Deirdre advises you to telephone or email your local CIC where staff will be happy to help you. If you have no work, or less work than before Your employer may have closed their business and sent you home. Where this is temporary, this is called a temporary lay-off. If it is permanent, you may be made redundant.

citizensinformation.ie

9am-8pm, Mon-FriPayment (PUP) is for employees The COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment and supported bypeople the Citizensliving Information and Funded self-employed in Board Ireland who lost their employment due to COVID-19. The PUP payment is closed to new applicants from 22 January 2022. If you have lost your job, you can apply for Jobseeker’s Benefit (JB) or Jobseeker's Allowance (JA) instead of PUP. JB is based on your PRSI contributions. JA is means tested. You apply for both payments at the same time (on the same application form) and the Department decides which one you qualify for.

If you are ill with COVID-19, you can get a special form of Enhanced Illness Benefit for COVID-19 absences. You may also get it if you are told by a doctor or the HSE to self-isolate or restrict movements due to being a probable source of infection. You must be in employment or self-employment to qualify. If you do not qualify for Illness Benefit for COVID-19 absences, you may be able to receive Supplementary Welfare Allowance instead. Enhanced Illness Benefit for COVID-19 absences is paid from the first day of sickness. If you cannot attend work due to illness that is not COVID-19, you can apply for standard Illness Benefit. If your income is a mix of social welfare and pay from employment, you can continue to get your usual social welfare payment if you become sick or have to self-isolate. If your income is less than the rate of enhanced Illness Benefit you would get, you can apply to have your income topped up to this rate. This top up will not affect the other payments. If you work in the civil and public sector, you do not need to apply for Illness Benefit for COVID-19 absences as separate leave arrangements are in place. If you cannot work because you have to look after children If you left work to care for a child or another member of your family, you can get information and advice on the social welfare payments that may be available to you by contacting your local CIC. If you cannot pay your rent If you are having difficulty paying rent, you may be able to claim: ●

Rent Supplement or

Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)

Rent Supplement is a short-term income support to people in the private rented sector who are finding it difficult to pay their rent. Rent Supplement means assessments have changed to allow for the higher rates of payments that claimants get with PUP. You may be able to get HAP from your local authority if you are assessed as having a housing need. You have to apply to your local authority’s housing section to be included on the housing list. It is based on your means and is paid directly to your private landlord. Going back to work

If the number of days you work has decreased, you may be entitled to Short Time Work Support. You must be unemployed for 3 days per week (excluding Sunday) to qualify for this. You can get this even if your employer is paying you through the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS).

If you are returning to work you must close your COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) claim. You can do this on MyWelfare.ie. If you are returning to work and your hours have been reduced, you may be entitled to keep or claim another social welfare payment:

If your hours have been reduced but you continue to work for more than 3 days per week (for example, you have been asked to work 5 mornings per week), you may qualify for Supplementary Welfare Allowance. You can call your local CIC to discuss your exact circumstances and possible entitlements.

Family Payments If you are parenting alone you may be entitled to One-Parent Family Payment. The other parent of your child may have reduced the maintenance they pay to support your child. You should notify your local Intreo center in this case. You can get an increase to your payment for up to 12 weeks. After this, your payment will be reassessed. You should also check if you qualify for Working Family Payment if you have dependent children and your hours or pay have been reduced. If you are pregnant and getting PUP or being paid through the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS), you can still apply for Maternity Benefit, Parent's Benefit and Paternity Benefit. The time you spend on PUP or being paid through TWSS or EWSS is treated the same as a period of employment. If you are receiving PUP and have not returned to work before you are due to start your maternity leave, you should ask your GP to complete form MB3 (pdf). Asking for a review of your payment If you work and also get a social welfare payment, and your hours or income from work have decreased, you can ask for your payment to be reassessed. You can continue to get both Working Family Payment and One-Parent Family Payment with your PUP.

Short Time Work Support if you will work 3 days or fewer

● Working Family Payment if you have dependent children and will work more than 38 hours per fortnight ● Supplementary Welfare Allowance if you work more than 3 days (for example, you work 5 mornings) and are earning less than the basic social welfare rate for your family size ●

Rent Supplement based on your means

All of the above, except for Short Time Work Support, depend on how much you earn from your employment. PRSI contributions Another point to note is that if you are getting the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment or you are being paid under the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme, when you apply for social insurance payments (for example, Maternity Benefit, Adoptive Benefit and the State Pension (Contributory), you will be treated as if you have been paying insurance contributions based on the social insurance class you were paying before you stopped working. For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Applications Invited For Festivals And Participative Events Fund Kerry County Council is inviting applications from festivals in Kerry for funding which has been provided by Fáilte Ireland under the Festivals and Participative Events Fund for 2022. Funding of €75,000 is being provided to Kerry events for this year. Festivals are an integral part of what Kerry offers as a destination and afford an opportunity for local people to attract increased visitors and revenue into their communities, often outside of the traditional peak tourism season. They provide opportunities to showcase culture, people and places, and greatly enhance the visitor experience. The funding scheme will support festivals and events that will drive domestic tourism and help to improve the visitor experience. To be considered for funding under the programme, the following applies: Events must have a minimum expenditure of €10,000. Festivals must generate a minimum of 500 visitor or tourist bed nights in paid accommodation. Other participative events must generate a minimum of 800 visitor or tourist bed nights in paid accommodation.

WANT TO CREATE SPACE IN YOUR HOUSE OR GARAGE ? DE-CLUTTER WITH A SKIP

They key objectives of the fund are to attract and develop domestic and international visitors in the shoulder season; to increase bed-nights and benefit the local economy; and to raise awareness of the region internationally. Eligible costs which may be funded include marketing activity, programming of events, and development activities such as training and feasibility studies. Application forms and the programme guidelines are available to download at: http://www.kerrycoco.ie/tourism/ and queries can emailed to TourismOffice@ kerrycoco.ie. Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, 1 March, 2022. Further information is available from the Tourism Unit at 066 7183591.

Richie Williams ESB NETWORK PROJECT. The electric vehicles which were on trial by some lucky local drivers over the past 12 months have now been recalled by the the ESB who undertook the Dingle Project Programme. The full impact of the trial will not be published for some time yet but the reports from the drivers has been very positive indeed. The fact that Dingle has 2 Electric Vehicle Charge Points in the Aquarium Car Park is a great asset for both locals and visitors alike. CLUB ALLIRELAND FINAL. Hard luck on Dingle sportsman Matthew Flaherty who played his heart out for his club Kilmoyley in the All Ireland Club Final in Croke Park last week. Some newspaper reports even suggested that Matthew was their man of the match despite being on the losing side and that shows his heroic efforts on the day. EMERGENCY NUMBERS. In the light of some disturbing attacks and burglaries in various parts of the country I would advise our readers to cut out the emergency numbers which appear inside the cover of this paper and keep a copy in the home and also in your vehicle. MINISTERIAL VISIT. Education Minister and Kerry TD Norma Foley recently paid a visit to a few West Kerry National Schools and announced funding for extra facilities which were very welcome indeed. It appears Norma was particularly impressed by the talented students who displayed their various musical skills at different locations during her tour.

BUSINESS OUTLETS. The Business Chamber wish to apologise to the public who may be dissappointed that some business outlets have not been open over the past few weeks. January is a month which gives some hard pressed operators a chance to take a short holiday but this year shortage of staff and covid self isolating played a big part in the extended closures. We are glad to report that most outlets in all sectors are now fully reopened but staff shortages are a lingering worry especially in the hospitality business. We thank all our readers for their continued support in Shopping Local and supporting Local Services many of whom advertise through this paper. PARADE. Arrangements are ongoing for another big parade on St Patrick's Day here in Dingle and we can confirm that the Traditional Route has been agreed between all interested parties. All we need now is for intending participants to start planning for their respective entries as the theme is open to everybodys own imagination or topical interest. Fáilte Roimh Chách!.

SPORTS CAPITAL GRANT: Réalt na Mara CLG, An Cromán, are delighted to accept a sports capital grant of €137,159 for the upgrading of our club facilities to include new dressing rooms. Our existing dressing rooms were originally built in 1991 after a lot of sweat and toil from many club members, it is now time for the club to upgrade these facilities for our members and the wider community. This grant could not have been achieved without the meticulous work of our development committee that includes Gavin O’Connor, Paudie McCarthy, Patricia Teahan, Patrick Casey, Colm Joy, Paudie McMahon, and our former chairperson Stephen Casey under whose term the grant process was initiated. SENIORS: Mid Kerry League (round 2): Cromane 3-12, Keel 1-11 Cromane were deserving winners in Cromane on Saturday afternoon to notch their second win in a row in the Mid Kerry League. Keel won the toss and played with the wind but it was the home side that settled quicker and led by 0-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. They stretched that lead to 0-6 to 0-2 with a series of Darragh McKeefry points before Keel had their best spell of the game, out scoring Cromane by 0-5 to 0-1 to end the half level at 0-7 apiece. Barry Flanagan chipped Cromane ahead at the start of the second half, but Keel kept some control of the game and a goal in the 40th minute put them ahead, 1-8 to 0-8. However, the last 20 minutes were dominated by Cromane as three goals from Jason O’Connor (his first score in a Cromane senior game), Darragh McKeefry and Barry Flanagan sealed the game for the home team. The second half also saw fine scores from Darren Houlihan (a terrific free from out by the sideline) and a lovely right footed effort from Donnchadh Walsh. Cromane play Beaufort next weekend in Cromane in the third round of the Mid Kerry League. Well done to our Cromane men. 38 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

He was best known for his work "Auld Lang Syne" (which most people have sung on New Year's Eve). Another work of Burn’s which is well known was “My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose.

Chatting to a few of the guests who attended, it was a most enjoyable evening with great criac, good food , and could maybe become a yearly event. A fantastic night was had by all .

Bob Tait , a Scotsman living in Anascaul the past 9 years and a Kerry resident for more than 20 years explains how Burns Night came about to be celebrated in Anascaul. I decided to arrange a Burns Night for a bit of craic and managed to get some Haggis from Scotland as well as arranging a Bagpipe player from Castlemaine and member of Killorgin Pipe Band (Gerard Baynham) . We kept prices low at €10 a ticket for an evening of fun as well as a two course meal of Scotch Broth Soup followed by Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties.

On Tuesday the 25th of January there was a touch of Scotland in Hannifan’s Pub, Anascaul in the way of a Burn’s Supper Evening . Burn’s Day is celebrated throughout Scotland on or around the 25th of January every year For those who have never heard of Rabbie Burns, he was a famous Scottish poet & songwriter/ singer born on 25th of January 1759 and died 21st July 1976 at the age of 37.

All 20 tickets were quickly snapped and Hannifin’s was filled to capacity. After a bit of thinking I decided that, with the high increase of domestic violence since lockdown and after the murder of Ashling Murphy, I would turn it into a fundraiser for Adapt Kerry , based in Tralee. With the help of Jimmy Flannery of Dingle Sea Safari’s kind donation, (€130 sea safari voucher) , Ines & Owen Knightly of Shadow River B&B (2 x €50 dinner vouchers) Hannifin’s bar kind donation of 20 x shots of Scotch Whisky to toast the Haggis with as well as a few other raffle prizes the evening raised €405 for Adapt Kerry. Oifigeach Cúnta Pleanála Teanga nua fostaithe! Evelyn Ní Lúing is ainm dom agus ceapadh mé mar Oifigeach Cúnta Pleanála Teanga Chiarraí Thiar le déanaí. Is as Fán, Ceann Trá mé fhéin. Tógadh le Gaelainn mé agus ní raibh focal Béarla agam go dtí go bhfreastlaíos ar scoil. Is cuimhin liomsa a bheith ag imeacht ar scoil agus ba í an Ghaelainn an teanga a bhí in úsáid againn go nádúrtha lena chéile taobh istigh agus lasmuigh den scoil. Táim ag súil go mór le bheith ag obair le Tobar Dhuibhne agus leis an bpobal áitiúil. Táim ag súil go mór le húsáid na Gaelainne a chur chun cinn. Ba bhreá liom bhur smaointí agus tuairimí a chloisint ar conas an Gaelainn a chur chun cinn anseo i gCiarraí Thiar! Cuir focal chugam ag ocpt@cfcd.ie nó 087 377 9337.

Dáta: c.1925 Ceantar: Radharc ar ailltreacha ar an mBlascaod Mór, Dún Chaoin, Co. Chiarraí Grianghrafadóir: Carl von Sydow Ábhar ó Bhailiúchán na Scol á fhoilsiú le caoinchead: Cnuasach Bhéaloideas Éireann www.duchas.ie.

Draoi Dubh a dh’imir an draíocht uirthi mar gur dhiúltaigh sé di. Cois uisce is mó a fhásann sé agus an coll a úsáideann an té a aimsíonn foinse uisce fé thalamh. Collóir a thugtar ar an nduine sin. Deirtear sa naomhseanchas gur comhairlíodh do Naomh Seanán tobar a dhéanamh trí mhaide cuill a shá sa talamh chun deireadh a chur le triomach. Chuir sé an maide taobh leis an tobar agus bile ard a bhí sa chrann an mhaidin dar gcionn. Tá tagairt in mórán scéalta miotaseolaíochta in Éirinn don tobar feasa a mbíodh naoi gcrann cuill mórthimpeall air. Tobar fóthoinn is ea é nó tá teacht air san áit go n-eascraíonn móraibhnte na hÉireann aisti. Bhí tobar dá leithéid leis ag na Tuatha Dé Danann go raibh seacht sruth na saíochta ag sileadh as. Deir scéal eile fós gur as an tobar sin a thána abhainn na Sionnainne agus seacht gcinn eile de mhóraibhnte na tíre. Tugtar cur síos fileata ar na crainn cuill mórthimpeall an tobair, as trí cinn acu a thagadh an tsaíocht, as trí cinn eile an t-ionspioráid agus as na trí cinn eile bua na héigse nó na filíochta. Is amhlaidh a thiteadh duilleoga, bláthanna agus cnóite na gcrann isteach sa tobar. Tobar Segais ceann desna dánta agus is sa dán sin a thugtar cur síos ar an mBradán Feasa go bhfuair Fionn Mac Cumhaill eolas ar an uile ní uaidh. As an gcoll leis a deineadh sciath Fhinn.

Seanchas na gCrann: An Coll ‘Coll is cuileann rogha na coille’ a deirtí. Bhí meas ar leith ar an gcoll riamh in Éirinn. An coll cumhra a thugtaí air. Bhí sé ar cheann den Aireg fedo nó desna crainn ab uaisle dá raibh ann. Ceann dár gcrainn dhúchasacha is ea é, crann a luadh riamh le saíocht, torthúlacht, ríogacht agus leis an bhfilíocht. Ceart-choll a thugtaí ar thaoiseach ar uairibh agus in áiteanna eile i litríocht na tíre seo, filíocht a thuigtear le coll. Ar nós mórán crann eile chreidtí go raibh cosaint sa mhaide cuill ón mí-ádh agus ón olc. Luann scéal béaloidis gur fhuascail fear a bhean fhéin ón lucht sí agus scian dhubh i láimh amháin aige agus maide cuill sa cheann eile. Casadh Sadhb, bean Fhinn Mhic Chumhaill ina fia le maide cuill. Ba é an

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá gaisce thar na bearta déanta ag Aodh Óg Ó Curráin ó Bhaile an Rannaigh. Tá mór rás curtha dhó aige ó Mhontana go dtí an Yukon. Bhí an aimsir fíochmhar agus d’éirigh go leor as an rás de bharr seaca agus mór sneachta. Pé scéal é ‘sé a tuairiscíodh ná go raibh an t-aistear curtha dhó ag Aodh Óg. Sin gaisce. Trí chéad míle a bhí ceapaithe don dturas ach b’éigean an cúrsa a chiorrú i mbliana de bharr na droch-aimsire.. Comhgháirdeachas leat a Aodh. De shiúl cos a chur Aodh an aistear dho: bhí rogha ann idir sin, rothaíocht nó scíáil. Rothar a bhí in úsáid ag an duine a bhuaigh – agus bean ab ea í. Caid - Iománaíocht Taimíd leath chaoch ag féachaint ar chluichí caide, peil na mban, iomána, camogaíocht, le seachtainí. Is maith an galar é. Tá buaite ar iománaithe Luimní fé dhó díreach mar atá buaite ar imreoirí caide Bhleá Cliath fé dhó. Beidh Ciarraí ar a dtriail i stád an Ghearaltaigh seachtain ón nDomhnach in aghaidh Dhún na Gall. Tá feara an tuaiscirt ag treascairt foirne deas agus clé. Tá súil againn ná beidh ár laocha so, san áireamh. N’fheadar an bhfuil an cinneadh ceart déanta ag CLG! Tá an aimsir damanta fuar furmhór an ama agus tátar ag cur an iomad ualaigh ar scata dos na himreoirí. Tá cuid acu ag imirt dá gContae, dá bhfoireann, agus do choirn, Sigerson agus sa chaid agus Fitzgibbon san iomáint. Bhí duine do imreoirí Chiarraí a chuala a imir trí chluiche i sé lá! Níl aon chiall leis seo agus b’fhearr go mór sos geimhridh a bheith ag na himreoirí. Ní imreoirí gairmiúla iad seo. Ag tagairt do chumainn eile, éist le bainisteoirí agus fiú imreoirí na mór chlubanna i Sasana. Is beag Sasanach atá ina bhainisteoir ar na clubanna móra. Lucht an airgid atá mar chúltaca ag fhurmhór na bhfóirne maithe. Ar an dtaobh eile don scéal tá ard chluichí caide agus iomána idir fhir agus mhná feiscithe againn.Tátar á rá anois gur cheart na mná a bheith mar chuid don CLG in aon eagraíocht amháin mar atá caid agus iománaíocht.
