Safe Houses and Shrapnel, Arms Dumps and Ambushes – marking Easter Monday in Annascaul
Drawings on paper and ceramics
Rachel Parry & Cormac Boydell
1 April – 7 May 2023, Thur–Sun 12–5pm
Opening Saturday 1 April, 12–2pm by Mickey Ned O’Sullivan, all welcome
invite you to join them on a guided walk on Easter Monday, the 10th of April.
During the War of Independence the Annascaul area was a hive of activity. Arms were smuggled, barracks burnt, secret messages carried, and shots and explosions rang out. This walk will mark Easter weekend by visiting some of the sites of these activities with talks given by local historians. Starting at Hanifin’s Bar the route will loop around the Meelin, Bunaneer, Ardrinane and Annagap areas. We will pause to view a medieval souterrain that served as a secret storage place for rifles, a safe house used by revolutionaries on the run, the house where injured British soldiers were given tea and cake and the nerve centre of subversive intelligence among other things.
Registration will be at Hanafin’s Bar on Annascaul’s Main Street from 11.00 a.m, with the walk beginning at 11.30. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family. The walk with its many information points should take about two hours.
Annascaul Historical Society would like to thank the many people who have generously joined us on our walks and contributed stories, poems and even songs!

Egg-ceedingly Good News about Eggs!
Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Since the domestication of the chicken more than 4,000 years ago, people in almost every culture have been enjoying and nourishing themselves with the egg. Easter occurs in Springtime, a period of new life and renewed growth thus it is not surprising that the egg - from which life begins - is somewhat of a celebrity in both religious and culinary history. Hens begin laying more eggs during the brighter, warmer days of Spring validating the great symbolism of the egg in so many traditions. From ancient pagan history to modern day Christianity and in every known culture - the egg represents fertility, birth and new life. Not surprisingly, the egg has the nutritional profile to support its lofty status. Eggs are an egg-cellent source of vitamin K and B vitamins including thiamin (B1), folate, choline, biotin and B12. Rich also in selenium, vitamin D and protein.
Not so long ago eggs were struck off the menu by those concerned with rising cholesterol levels. At the time of their ousting, public health experts and the medical profession believed that dietary cholesterol was an important contributory factor in the rising incidences of cardiovascular disease. However, as more research unfolds, instead of contributing to heart disease, the total nutritional content of whole eggs actually lower the risk. The most up-to-date research not only reverses the cholesterol myth but also highlights that saturated animal fat (low in eggs) in the diet, and not dietary cholesterol, has a much greater impact on blood cholesterol levels.
Eggs contain many heart-friendly nutrients. Most notably betaine and choline. Betaine can reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid derived from animal protein. Homocysteine can damage the blood vessel walls and contribute to clot formation increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Homocysteine tends to be higher in people who eat a lot of animal protein and consume few leafy vegetables, beans or fruit - which provide folic acid and B vitamins that can help the body of rid itself of homocysteine. Choline a key nutrient for cell membranes, neurotransmitters and brain function. Eating eggs has been associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. Choline is also involved in the metabolism of homocysteine as are the B vitamins - making the egg a superfood for the both the heart and the brain. With all this said, it does not mean you can eat eggs until they come out your ears! While there is no official upper limit on egg consumption, the scientists at Harvard Medical School recommend no more that six eggs a week for adults.
It is important to choose eggs that are local, fresh and preferably organic or at least, chemical-free. Commercially raised chicks are fed cheap, processed grains, GM maize or GM soy. It literally costs chickenfeed to feed a chicken for mass production and their eggs. Pesticides and antibiotics are routinely given to these birds to deal with the risks of their unnatural environment. The chickens convert much of the starch from this chicken feed into saturated fat. The ingested pesticide and antibiotic residues are stored in that fat, much of which ends up in the yolk of the egg. In 2012 EU laws banned the use of traditional battery cages in commercial egg
production, but even without the cages conditions remain dire when it comes to the diet, health and welfare of commercial chickens and hens.
Organic hens and those reared freely on the farm down the road, whose diet is a natural fare of foraged plant foods, untainted seeds and insects produce much healthier eggs. The nutrition of the egg is only as good as the hen’s diet and wellbeing. Since these birds are free from crowded conditions, antibiotic use is usually unnecessary and pesticides are rarely needed. When free to peck their own food, chickens and hens favour insects, grains and seeds from their native surroundings, which ultimately makes for a happier hen and a healthier egg! Perhaps this is the real reason chickens crossed the road in the first place!
The best method of storing eggs is point down and in the carton, which protects the porous shell from light and odours. They are best kept cool but not chilled. In warmer weather, eggs can be stored in the fridge. Before cooking, particularly when baking, take them out of the fridge for at least 30mins before use.
Poaching and boiling, either hard or soft, are the best ways to enjoy eggs because it heats the egg at lower temperatures. High temperatures reached during frying alter the heat-sensitive structures in the egg, making them less beneficial to our health. As does many of the oils in which they are fried.
Good quality eggs are economical, versatile and healthy. They are Nature's answer to fast food! A little thought into the source, storage and preparation of eggs will link up their health benefits with the symbolism of Mother Nature's great gift - and that is worth celebrating at Easter and indeed, the brighter months ahead!

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland
And so the Easter Holidays have arrived and with the Easter Eggs and longer days, it will be a lovely time, to get out and about with family and friends…… A wonderful walk is to Eask Tower with its breath-taking views from the Tower. Apart from the warm welcome of Tom and Teresa, their chat of the story of the Tower and its history, makes this the perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon!
April will also see the return of some of our friends from West Springfield, our Sister City, including the students from West Springfield High School. The Pobalscoil students will host their visit with much fun and adventure, as they visit many of our local attractions and activities whilst connecting with the shared heritage and culture of the Blasket Islands and Corca Dhuibhne. Other visitors from the Greater Springfield region include Sean Cahillane, President of the Irish Cultural Centre of Western New England, Former Mayor of West Springfield Ed Sullivan, and President of the Eastern States Exposition, The Big E, Gene Cassidy. For local businesses who would like to learn more about being a part of the Dingle Peninsula Showcase at The Big E this coming September and meet Gene while in town, please contact Caroline or Sam at Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance - dptakerry@ gmail.com
Some of our visitors will also be participating in Ride Dingle which takes place on Saturday, 15th April. The support and consideration of all the communities and families along the route are very much appreciated and Ollie and his team from Ride Dingle have ensured that Road Closures are kept to the very minimum. They have planned the following communications:
• L etter drop to all residents along relevant roads – from the 4th April
• Bi-lingual Signs on all roads - from the 4th April
• Specific sign to be put up at the Dingle Mart informing farmers of the road closures
• West Kerry live will have full page ads with the map of the road closures and details.
• Radio ads in Irish on Radio Kerry on the week of the event notifying people of the road closures
• Local interview on Radio Na Gaeltachta on the week of the event
• Direct contact with local groups
• T hrough Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance and Dingle Chamber Member Networks Mile buíochas to all involved……….
Dates for your Diary!
Dé Luain 17ú Aibreán / Monday 17th April Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne
- Cruinniú Ginearálta Bliantúil & Ócáid Líonraithe/ Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (CTCD/DPTA) - AGM and Annual Networking Event - – 4.30 go dtí 7in san Óstáin na Sceilge / Dingle Skellig Hotel. Don’t forget to bring your brochures and business cards to reconnect for our Networking with a difference this year –“Speed Dating”! Come along to connect with new partners, learn about our new additions for 2023 – great new experiences and opportunities.
Key highlights of the day include: The Launch of the Dingle Peninsula’s Sustainability Charter, new market research from the East Coast USA, the DPTA MTU CE4RT Programme which will give up to 16 local businesses the opportunity to avail of €8,000 each for their own Sustainability goals and lots more……… Make sure to come to keep your business from missing out!
CTCD/ DPTA has been working on the Dingle Peninsula’s Sustainable Tourism Charter that prioritizes restoring and sustaining the environment, that nurtures our language, culture, and heritage, enriches our local communities, and respects tourism’s importance to our economy. After all, 96% of our tourism businesses are family-owned – a vital part of what makes our peninsula so special!
From the work that we have been doing, our mission is to excel as leaders in sustainable, regenerative tourism, connect visitors with our language, cultural heritage, inspirational landscape, and traditional welcome, help our members achieve sustainability, and promote the well-being of our local communities.
As our businesses and communities across the Dingle Peninsula prepare to offer the warmest of Kerry Welcomes to global visitors to West Kerry, CTCD/DPTA looks forward to helping tell our stories to attract those seeking a memorable holiday’s experience.
Fáilte Ireland, in a December 2022 report, pointed out that North America stands out as the most promising overseas market, with its strong dollar and less challenging economic issues compared with Europe. Our research at The Big E last year not only supports this research but found that 99% of almost 3,000 respondents would consider the Dingle
Peninsula as their base for an Irish holiday! Other research, by Expedia Group, showed 78% of respondents to their poll made travel choices when they saw themselves represented in ads and promotions for a destination. In addition, 90% of those polled by Expedia sought sustainable options when travelling.
CTCD/DPTA and others are working to lead sustainable and ”slow tourism” opportunities for travellers. Further, Booking.com found 71% of 2022 poll respondents wanted to increase their efforts to travel more sustainably, which is a 10% rise over the same poll in 2021. Booking.com also found that 66% of holiday makers wanted authentic experiences that represent the local culture.
Given that, how could anyone pass up a trip to West Kerry, where all areas of our peninsula are working toward sustainable and authentic experiences! Come and learn more on the 17th!

From the 1911 Census in West Kerry
Ted Creedon
This is our second look at longevity – who were the oldest people in West Kerry, from Camp to the Blaskets, as recorded in the 1911 Census which was taken on Sunday, April 2? In the last issue we started with people aged 89 – in the 90th year of life and moved on to people in their 90s.
Walsh, Nora aged 90, lived in the home of her ‘relative’ Michael Walsh, 40, and his wife Ellen, 38, in Teer, Brandon. Nora was recorded as ‘Married’ but there was no mention of her husband. Also, she did not speak English, according to the form.
O’Connor, John J. aged 90 lived in Faha, Cloghane. He was recorded as a farmer and the ‘Head of family’. He was married to Noria, 76.
Cahillane, Jeremiah, aged 90, was a retired fisherman and a widower. His son Jerry was head of the house and he was recorded as being aged 80 on both the hand-written and printed census forms.
Jerry was a fisherman and was married to Maggie, 28. It is probable that the ‘80’ recorded on the written form should have been ‘30’ and should have been corrected by Constable Connolly, the enumerator.
Griffin, Johanna, aged 90 and a widow, is the last of this 90s age group. She lived in the home of her daughter-in-law Margaret, 60, a farmer and a widow in the townland of Cappaclogh East, (Kilgobban).
McDonnell, John, aged 91, was a farmer and head of the family. He lived in Emlagh East, (Marhin), with his wife Mary, 81. The couple were married c1850.
Finnerty, Mary, aged 91, was the head of her family and a widow who lived in Kildurrihy East, Ventry, with her daughter-in-law Kate, 63, also a widow and seven other family members.
Harrington, Mary, aged 92, was a widow living in Caher, Castlegregory. She was a farmer and the head of the family. She shared the home with two daughters and a granddaughter.
Moriarty, Mary, aged 93, lived in Cloonsharragh, Cloghane with her farmer son Michael, 65, and his wife Bridget, 58. There were seven other family members in the home on Census night.
Francis, John, aged 93,lived in Shanakyle, Kilquane, and was a (Retired Farmer). There were two other people in the home on Census night – his wife Eliza, 83, and his son Thomas, 29, a farmer.
Kelliher, Bridget, aged 94, was a widow who lived with her daughter-in-law Margaret, 65, also a widow, in Ballynana (Kilmalkedar). Two of Margaret’s sons were ‘Farm servants’.
Manning, Kate, aged 94, lived in Ballineanig-Church-Quarter, (Marhin) where she was a widow and head of the family. Her son John, 61, was a farmer and married to Mary, 49. The couple had one son and four daughters. Finnerty, Johanna, aged 94, lived in Ballincota, Ventry. She was head of the family and a widow. Her son John was a farmer and a widower.
O’Connor, Bridget, aged 95, lived in Cloghaneanode, Castlegregory and was widowed. Her son Thomas, 54 was a farmer and single. Her daughter Ellie was aged 36.
This doesn’t add up. The original hand-written Census form is slightly smudged around Bridget’s age – it may well be 75 rather than 95. And it’s unlikely she would have given birth almost 60 years earlier.
Foley, John, aged 96, was a widower and a retired farmer who lived in Fahan, Ventry. He was head of the family. His son John, 57, was married to Ellen, 55. They had one daughter and three sons.
Moriarty, John, aged 97, was a farmer, a widower and head of his family living in the remote townland of Mulloughveal, Cloghane, with his farmer son John, 59, and John’s wife Margaret, 59. The couple had nine children. Kelliher, John, aged 98, was a farmer and head of the family living in Ballynana, as was 94 year-old Bridget Kelliher above. There were eight other people in John’s house – all named Fitzgerald. The head of that group was Nicholas who was John’s nephew.
Lyne, Ellen, aged 101 was the oldest person living in West Kerry in April, 1911. She was in the home of James Sullivan, 72 and a farmer, in Gurteen, Ballynacourty. He was married to Ellen’s daughter Mary, 70. Twelve of the couples thirteen children were still living but only four of them were in the house on Census night.
What’s really surprising about these records is that of the 17 people recorded above 9 of them were ‘head of family’ - in the tenth decade of their lives.
The Great Blasket
Daly, Maurice, 84, was a retired fisherman and the oldest person living on the Great Blasket Island on Census night 1911. He was head of the family and was married to Kate, 74, who was born in the USA around 1837.

Notes of a Ukrainian in Ireland. Time to walk
Kateryna Kobylnik
There are many amazing places in Ireland that can only be reached on foot. There is The Ireland Walking Guide which collects the most popular trails and recommendations (www. theirelandwalkingguide.com)
The Dingle Way is one of the most famous national waymarked routes 162 km long. It starts and ends in Tralee and usually takes seven days. Such hiking is suitable for professionals. Beginners should start with a short distance and choose routes 5 kilometres long, which should be taken slowly. This will help you feel yourself, make sure that your clothes and shoes fit, and that the backpack doesn't cause discomfort. It's also necessary to take into account the total height of the ascent. A kilometre up will be more difficult and will be a test for the knees, because where there is an ascent, there is also a descent. Hiking itself is similar to training, you should increase the difficulty and distance consistently.
Well, let's start with the trail to Dingle Lighthouse, which is located about 3 kilometres south of town. The route runs along the coast and starts at the Dingle Skellig Hotel, passing The Dingle Coast Guard Station and Hussey's Folly Tower, which dates back to 1845 and was built during the Great Famine (1845–1849) as a means of providing work for the poor. Depending on the first impressions from hiking, you can increase the distance by continuing the walk along the top of the cliff to the favorite beach of the locals, Beenbawn. There you can admire the waterfall and dive into the cool ocean water. Be aware that some sections of the trail run very close to the edge of the cliff. But if you have enough strength, you can then climb to Beenbawn Head, taking a couple of stones with you, according to the local tradition. From the top there will be a stunning view of the ocean and

the surrounding area of Dingle!
During the next walk, we will reach the Eask Tower, located on top of Carhoo Hill, opposite Dingle Harbour. The tower was built of solid stone in 1847 as another project to help people who were starving. Its purpose was to warn the sailors in time to lower the sails and safely go around the mouth of the harbour. The climb to 184 meters is worth a couple of euros, which the farmer asks for access. At every turn, the steep viewpoint offers new views, covering most of the peninsula and stretching far beyond to Blasket and Skellig Islands, Ireland's highest mountain Carrauntoohil and Mount Brandon. The following routes can already be planned at a distance of 10 - 15 km. Calculate that an average of two kilometers takes half an hour, that is, the hike takes half a day at a comfortable pace with stops. For planning, try hiking route services: Alltrails, Wikiloc, Komoot, etc. The local website (dinglehillwalkingclub.com) has local routes and information on how to join the club.
You can use the existing waymarked trails or create your own unique one based on historical events and interesting names. According to their location, Google Maps will help pave the way. Such hiking will instantly turn into an exciting adventure. In the vicinity of Dingle you can find the Giant's Grave a megalithic tomb located on the eastern side of the Conor Pass. The Ballintaggart Ogham Stones are located within a 30m diameter circular enclosure to the east of Dingle Racecourse. The medieval stone Garfinny Bridge, crosses the river 4 kilometres from Dingle on the old road to Lispole. The bridge is believed to have been built in the 14th and 15th centuries without the use of mortar, and is said to have been crossed by Arthur Grey, 14th Baron Gray de Wilton (Lord Deputy of Ireland) in 1580 with his 800 troops on their way to the Siege of Smerwick, where they killed 600 men, women and children who had already agreed to surrender in exchange for their lives.
Enjoying a walk is a matter of careful planning and preparation. The weather in Ireland is changeable, so it is worth checking the forecast before starting hiking. A windbreaker and sunscreen should always be in your backpack. Keep in mind that some trails may be too slippery after rain. Simple hiking does not require special equipment, because the difficulty, length, height and other components can vary depending on physical condition and mood. The health benefits remain unchanged, because the body is strengthened, the duration of concentration of attention increases, and positive thinking aimed at solving tasks is stimulated.
It is worth going on several different hiking trips and, based on the results, understand what is right for you, because the experience you get from hiking is unique!
In

Irish Whiskey Society April Tasting
It is not very often that we in Dingle get an opportunity to observe just how an independent whiskey bottler sources and bottles their whiskey; what inspires them to do what they do and where they get their inspiration from. This April we have a unique opportunity to see at first hand what is involved in this process.
W.D. O Connell are whiskey merchants and independent bottlers of premium whiskey. They do not have a distillery and are not trying to build one. They are known for bottling & blending the best spirits they can find, to curate a bottle and cask library that matches their adventurous spirit. In the bygone tradition of bottlers and bonders from the earliest days of Irish whiskey, they sought out the finest new-make and mature spirits from the best of Ireland’s distillers. They work with peated whiskey and bottle single grains; they cherish an all-sherry cask strength release. They are happy to re-mature whiskey in a Madeira cask, and source the best Scotch whisky Islay has to offer.
This is also the first time that we will have a tasting in Foxy John's bar on Main Street so we are really looking forward to this event and we plan to involve more bars in the town in the tastings going forward.
When: April 14th 7.30 pm Where: Foxy John's Bar, Dingle.

Register Now For The 11th Annual County Clean Up
The 11th annual County Clean Up will take place across the county on Saturday, 15th April* and a call is going out to all community and voluntary organisations and individuals to get involved.
The County Clean-Up takes place with the support of KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council. Over the past decade, hundreds of tonnes of rubbish have been collected along Kerry roads by thousands of volunteers.
The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn urged everyone to participate in what is now one of the annual community initiatives in Kerry.
‘The tremendous effort of volunteers over the past decade has contributed to the campaign to keep the county litter-free. The County Clean Up greatly complements the work which Kerry County Council does all year round to promote environmental awareness and maintain our wonderful landscape.
‘Registration is now open at www.countycleanup.com and I hope that local communities will participate in large numbers,’ he said.
Noel O’Reilly from KWD said: ‘KWD Recycling is proud to be involved in the County Clean Up which is now in its 11th year. It is a very important day that has made a huge difference on the roads of Kerry and west Cork.’
Environmental Awareness Officer at Kerry County Council, Breda Moriarty said: ‘The amazing and diligent work of many community groups and individuals for the County Clean Up is admirable. Everyone coming together to keep Kerry clean and our roads litter free for an 11th year is fantastic.’ Groups must register to ensure they receive a clean-up pack and to nominate a collection point for any litter collected.
*Note: For Dingle and surrounding areas the clean up will take place on Monday 10th April. See Dingle Notes, page 23.

COUNTY CLEANUP DAY. Saturday April 15th is the date selected by KWD and Kerry County Council as County Cleanup Day this year. However this date clashes with the Ride Dingle Cycle Event throughout most of the main roads in the Peninsula. Dingle Tidy Towns Committee have decided that Easter Monday April 10th the preceding Monday will be a safer day to request volunteers to help collect litter along the 8 approach roads to town.
Volunteers are requested to meet at the Bottle Bank near The Tracks at 11a.m. where gloves and bags and suitable collection areas will be allocated. We hope that as it is a Bank Holiday greater numbers than recent years will be available to help out this year.
T.V. The recent television documentary featuring The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust in Malawi was most informative and a worthy tribute to its founder Dingle based lady Margaret Riordan mother of the late Billy. The programme really highlighted how funds from all the voluntary donations and fund raising events are put to great use in helping others less fortunate than ourselves. Continued success to Mags, the Riordan Family and all involved in the wonderful work of this Trust.
DEATHS. Dingle Business Chamber wish to convey their sympathies to the families of a number of people who were involved in various forms of business here in town and who have recently passed from this life. These include Oliver O'Sullivan late of John Street and Beenbawn, Lisbeth Mulcahy late of Green Street and Ballyferriter and Michael Joe Kavanagh late of MarianPark. Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh a nAnameacha Dhílis.
AWARDS. Congratulations to all involved in An Riasc Brewery and The Dingle Sea Safari both groups who featured prominently in National Prizegiving events recently. It’s really great to see hard working local business groups being rewarded for their initiatives especially at national level where the competition and standards are increasing every year.
Comhairdeachas chomh maith do dhaltaí Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne atá cáilithe do Chraobh na hÉireann Junk Kouture i mBaile Átha Cliath i mí Bealtaine. Go n-eirí leo agus dhá seans acu an Craobh a bhuachaint i mbliana.
PARADES. Despite the poor weather conditions a large crowd of supporters followed the Dingle Fife And Drum Band through the streets for the 6a.m. Traditional March on St Patrick’s Day. Thanks to Fr. Michael Moynihan who celebrated Mass in St. Mary’s Church for the Band and supporters mid way through the dawn march.
The Business Chamber wish to thank the Band members, the pupils of Scoil an Gleanna and Bunscoil an Clochar and the Lispole musicians all of whom brought a great spirit to the streets with their wonderful musical talents.
Also Míle Buíochas to all the various groups, clubs, business outlets and services, vintage vehicle owners and emergency services and individuals who took part on the day. The Parade was followed by another fine display of traditional Irish Dancing on stage in Holyground by Rinceoiri na Ríochta. Members of Splanc the Dingle Carnival Band then completed the outdoor entertainment with their unique drumming talent in the Holyground Car Park.
Thanks to all our entertainers, the Gardaí and our loyal group of stewards and supporters and all who contributed to another successful St Patrick’s Day in Dingle. Just a final word to request the outlets who did not feature in the weekends activities to consider getting involved in future events.

The Menopause Explained
Brid Morrison (GP Nurse)
It literally means when your periods have stopped for 12 months plus, on average this happens around the age of 51.
It is triggered by our ovaries slowing down, they have run out of there egg supply, thereby producing less hormones. These hormones are called oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Oestrogen protects a number of different systems in a women’s body- brain, skin, bones, heart, urinary functions and the vaginal area.
Perimenopause is the time of our lives before this, our periods may begin to change and one or one menopausal symptoms may begin to kick in. This can happen slowly and subtly or symptoms may come on dramatically fast! These symptoms may impact negatively on a women’s personal life, often affecting their family life and performance at work.
The perimenopause can last from months to years, sometimes up to 10 years before your periods stop altogether. Usually, the symptoms become apparent in our 40s. Oestrogen and progesterone work together to regulate your menstrual cycle (your period) and they produce eggs. During the perimenopause period our hormones fluctuate drastically. For this reason, there is no accurate, definitive blood test that can determine that you are perimenopausal-it is based on symptoms you are experiencing. Often it is the imbalance of these hormones which leads to the symptoms of menopause occurringwhen you hear or read about menopausal symptoms, it also includes perimenopausal symptoms as they are the same, and are both due to your hormones changing. These symptoms vary greatly both physically and mentally. From anxiety, low mood, low energy levels, irritability, brain fog, joint pain, difficulty sleeping, reduced libido (sex drive), dry skin, night sweats, hot flushes, heart palpitations, vaginal dryness/ irritation and urinary incontinence…this is to name just a few!! It affects us both mentally and physically throughout our whole bodies.
Early menopause or Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) is when it happens under the ago of 40. Blood tests can be taken to test for this, but are also not definitive either. Your doctor/nurse will look at the full clinical picture of symptoms and sometimes blood tests to determine a reason.
Certain conditions can bring about early menopause- such as having your ovaries or womb removed surgically, radiotherapy/chemotherapy, treatments for endometriosis, some genetic and autoimmune factors can lead to early menopause.
The most effective treatment for perimenopause/ menopause is to replace the hormones through Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). A healthy lifestyle and diet modification- quitting smoking, reducing alcohol, exercise and calcium rich diet is essential.
HRT also protects your future health, from weakening of the bones (osteoporosis), heart disease, diabetes, bowel cancer and dementia. Regretfully, a generation of women where denied the opportunity of improved quality of life after the premature release and subsequent mass exposure of 2 studies in the early 2000’s inaccurately reporting risks of HRT that have since been retracted and disproven.
For most women the benefits of taking HRT outweigh any risks. There is no way of knowing when perimenopause/menopause will start, yet we know it will happen. Thankfully we now know a lot more about how our bodies work compared to past generations of women who suffered silently before us. We have the ability now to empower and educate ourselves and make decisions regarding our perimenopausal/ menopausal health and how to optimise this transition for ourselves. We have options, these options are safe and are readily available to us.

Castlegregory Celtic FC: Result: Premier A: Castlegregory Celtic FC A 0-4 Camp United. A combination of injuries and players unavailable meant for a very stiff challenge against a full strength Camp side last Sunday morning in Paddy Goggin Memorial Park. Despite the absences, Castle gave a very spirited display but experience and clinical finishing saw Camp run out 4-0 winners in our final home game of the season. Thanks to everyone that came and supported the lads, it was fantastic to see such a crowd in attendance. We are also delighted to announce that there was a huge total of €2200 donated at the gate in aid of Chris O'Driscoll, and realistically that was the best result of the day as both communities pulled together to help Chris in his fight for recovery.

Hearty Tuscan Bean Soup
Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School
Michael Healy-Rae TD
Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae Clinicí Áitiúla
Milltown: Larkins
There is a reason that Italian food is so popular around the world. Their philosophy is simple, work with good seasonal ingredients and take your time when cooking to create beautiful dishes. You will find versions of this soup known as Ribollita in Tuscany, a heaty mixture of vegetables, beans and bread in a bowl.
I definitely recommend soaking the beans the night before for this, the result will give you a creaminess to the soup. Take your time making this and enjoy cooking it.
Ingredients
200g cannellini beans, soaked in cold water overnight
1 large onion, cut into small dice
3 cloves garlic, sliced
bunch of thyme leaves
2 carrots, diced
1 tsp. fennel seeds
1 tsp. chilli flakes
4 tomatoes, peeled, seeds removed and cut into large dice
handful of kale, stalks removed and chopped
2 large potatoes, peeled and diced
some stale crusty bread, broken into pieces
salt and pepper
dash of extra virgin olive oil
Method
Strain the beans, then add them along with some of the onion and some of the garlic to a large pot of salted water. Bring this to the boil and then simmer for about an hour. Check the beans, they should be just cooked and have a little bite. Strain them and keep the liquid for later.
Place a pot on over medium heat, add a little oil and add the remaining onion, garlic, thyme and a pinch of salt. Cook this gently for about 5 minutes, add the garlic and cook for a few minutes, then add the carrots. Taking your time cooking them one by one before adding the next really helps to bring out the flavour of each vegetable. Add in the fennel seeds and chili flakes. Stir in the tomatoes and the beans. Cover all of this with the water from the beans.
Let this simmer for about 25 minutes. At this stage add the kale and potatoes. Once you think the potatoes are cooked add in the bread. Taste and season with salt and pepper, drizzle with some extra virgin olive before serving.

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan
Though we might not notice from the weather, Spring is well and truly here and Easter is just a week away. In West Kerry Live this week there is list of times for the Easter Ceremonies in the four parishes of Corca Dhuibhne. I extend a word of invitation and encouragement to all to attend the Holy Week Ceremonies. As we journey through Holy Week in the liturgy, in a most extraordinary way it makes those wonderful happenings of the events surrounding the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, present to us in real time. They become present to us in the here and now. This is brought home to us in our celebration of the Eucharist where time past, present and future come together on our altar and, through one of God's greatest gifts, we are present at all three of them. We will witness his Agony in the Garden, we will observe his betrayal by one of his close followers, we will view his trial and his scourging, we will accompany him on his journey to the Hill of Calvary. We will be there when he is nailed to the Cross and we will gaze on him in his last agony. We will honour him in the moment of his death and we will accompany his body to the tomb in the hillside. And then we will wait. We will wait and then with Mary Magdalene we will go to the tomb early in the morning to find it empty, coming to the realisation that Jesus is risen from the dead. And then our joy will be complete.
Recently Angela Moore visited the Parish and spoke at the weekend Masses about the work of Mary’s Meals. They help feed children as they attend school in the poorest countries in the world. €3,149 has been forwarded to Marys Meals from this parish. Míle buíochas.
Today Trócaire works in partnership with local and church organisations, supporting communities in over 20 developing countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to bring about lasting change. Your continued support is much appreciated.
Fear is the deafening sound of war. Love is the hand that quietens it
Fear is the voice that is never heard. Love is breaking the silence
Fear is the truth that is locked in the dark. Love is the courage that feeds it
Fear is the hunger that starves all hope. Love is the food that feeds it. As long as pain exists, as long as suffering is here, we will stay. Trócaire. Until love conquers Fear.
Last week we presented a cheque of €2,251 to the students of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne who are part of the Cara Project. We received a letter from Róisín Kelly, Director of Cara Projects thanking the parishioners for their generosity. ‘In 2023, as well as work in our Centre, Cara Girls Rescue Project, we were able to provide food parcels for 155 families and build new basic corrugated houses for 8 families who were living in falling down mud huts. We could not do this without the support of the Irish people who, despite hard times here, continue to support us year after year’

Ta seachtain mhór ghaoithe agus báistí curtha dínn againn ó shin agus sinn ag druidim leis an gcéad lá d’Aibreán nó Lá na nAmadán. De réir an tseanchais mairfidh an ghaoth agus an bháisteach sin go ceann cúpla lá eile – sin iad Laethanta na Bó Riabhaí. As long as you meet the SSEA eligibility criteria you will be automatically issued the Voucher via email. Once you receive your voucher you then contact your auditor, and they will ask for key details about your business and confirm the cost of the audit. This should be covered by the voucher, if you are a larger business the €2000 might not cover the audit. Schedule a time and date with your auditor for a site visit. This can take between 1 and 2 days.

WELCOME
When Steve O'Connors, great grandfather John O'Connor emigrated from Upper Camp to America in the late 1800’s, Ireland was a very different place. The young Campman had no education and he began working on the roads and succeeded in raising the price of a farm which he bought in Illinois. Farming was
what he knew best and later on he bought a farm and moved to Iowa, where he made his fortune and raised his family. And so his great grandson Steve and his wife Peggy returned to Camp to retrace their ancestry over 25 years ago and were lucky to meet a cousin the late Tom Batt, who had great stories about the family which he was delighted to share with Steve.
It was great to welcome Steve and Peggy back again last week and they caught up with many of their relatives and friends in Camp.
Staying in Camp Junction b/b they toured around South Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula and they had a very enjoyable holiday. It seems they hope to be back again all going well, in September 2024 when Steve who prides himself on his auctioneering skills developed on the farm auctioning cattle with his father. He might even auction a few sheep for us. On his visit in 2010 he was delighted to preside over an auction at The Railway Tavern, obliging his good friend, the late Seamus O Donnell, it went down very well on the night. Bon voyage Steve and Peggy and we all look forward to seeing you again in Camp.

Solar Systems
Tom Kennedy
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
The Annual Junction Bar Cheltenham Tipster was great fun again this year. A bit unpredictable at times this year with the going underfoot very soft in rainy conditions especially as the week progressed. After a very exciting week, Kieran and Haulie, never far from the top of the board all week came in first winning the Cheltenham trophy, 2nd. Mike Dolan, 3rd. John and Eileen Monk and 4th Trevor Howley and Paul Howley. Congratulations and well done all and thanks to Bernadette for all the organising. A total of 55 took part this year in the Junction Tipster, for many its a once a year betting experience.
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
And the Top Tipster trophy at Maurice Fitzgerald's Bar, Castlegregory came to Camp this year. John and Diane Herlihy won the top prize, 2nd Clement Crean and 3rd Laura Kelliher.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

DAFFODIL DAY
Thanks to everyone who supported Daffodil
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Cromane News
Jane Casey
SENIORS: The Cromane senior team travel to Ballybunion on Sunday next (April 2) to take on Beale in the second round of this year’s County Senior League. Cromane opened their Division 4 campaign with a hard-fought win over Castlegregory (0-13 to 0-11) in Cromane on St Patrick’s Day. Beale also had a win in the opening round, beating Sneem-Derrynane 0-12 to 0-7. The game in Ballybunion has a throw-in time of 2pm.
MINORS: County Minor League Division 2A (back game): GlenbeighGlencar/Cromane (GGC) 1-12, Ballymac 4-10
The GGC minors played a back game last Monday (March 20) against Ballymac in Caherslee, Tralee, and were defeated by the old adage of goals win games.
This result means the final placings of Division 2A are undecided until the result of a back game between Ballymac and Ardfert. The GGC lads are in contention for 3rd or 4th spot which means they would play a semi-final against one of the teams in 3rd and 4th in Division 2B.\
Still, plenty of football to play in the minor county league, the lads have produced some good performances with last Monday’s loss ending a run of three games unbeaten (one win and two draws).
UNDER-13s: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) will again enter two teams in the Under-13 county league. The GGC Black team’s campaign began last Sunday with a home game against Kenmare. They won well (5-25 to 0-4).
Panel: Alex Keary, Ben O'Shea, Cathal Clifford Cian Clifford, Cian Sheehan, Conor O'Sullivan Cormac Clifford, Dara O'Connor, Daragh O'Connor, Diarmuid Riordan, DJ Poff, Jack Morris, Liam McGrath, Liam O'Sullivan, Paddy O'Sullivan, Ronan McDonnell, Seamus Moriarty.
The Maroon team competes in Division 4 of the county league and will have games on Sunday evenings against Beaufort (away on April 2); Fossa (home on April 9); Ballyduff (away on April 19); and Kilgarvan (away on April 23).
The Black team will compete in Division 11 and will also have games on Sunday evenings beginning against Ballyduff (away on April 2); Ballymac (home on April 9); Listowel Emmets (home on April 16); and An Ghaeltacht (away on April 23).
Best of luck to all of our players. Their coaches are Gavin O’Connor, Tony O’Sullivan, Brian Keary, and Garry McGrath.

Ciarraí Fós gan Bua
Mícheál Ó hUanacháin
Le coicíos anuas, tá sé tugtha le fios ag muintir Chiarraí do shaol na Sraithe nárbh é toradh an chluiche in aghaidh na Gaillimhe an teist a bheidh orthu faoi dheireadh an tséasúir.
Faoi bhealach don dara seachtain as a chéile, Lá le Pádraig i bPáirc Chaladh na Carraige i Loch Garman, chruthaigh siad arís go bhfuil cumas maith cosanta iontu, agus bíodh gur chailleadar le dhá chúl in aghaid ceann, ba ar éigin é, agus bhíodar ag brú go láidir sna nóiméid deireanacha.
Is nós acu bheith ag marcáil go teann nuair atá an liathróid ag an bhfoireann eile, agus fágann sin baol orthu go mbéarfar orthu de bharr calaoise, an rud díreach a d'fhág cúl ag an bhfoireann baile go han-luath san imirt ainneoin tus maith ionsaitheach bheith déanta acu féin.
Ach féach go raibh os cionn uair a chloig eile imeartha sara bhfuair muintir Locha Garman an dara cúl. Ba ó chi ón gcúinne a thainig sé seo, sampla eile de na cleasa atá foghlamtha le fad ag foirne a bhfuil an taithí acu nach bhfuil fós ag Ciarraí. Tá na míreanna seasta sin – saor-chiceanna agus ciceanna cúinne – á gcleachtadh gach seachtain ag na foirne, ach ní hionann iad a chleachtadh agus bheith in ann an deis a thapú ná an chosaint cheart bheith i do cheann agat agus cluiche ceart faoi lán-siúil.
Lean na Ciarraigh orthu ag ionsaí, agus fuaireadar cúl gar do fíordheireadh an chluiche, Leo Gaxha arís, fear ar bheag nár éirigh leis scór na cothramaíochta a bhaint amach in am chúiteamh ghortaithe.
Sa bhaile i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair an tseachtain dar gcionn, oíche gaoithe agus báistí nár éascaigh tasc na n-imreoirí. Ach bhí slua maith i láthair, agus is taca a leithéid don bhfoireann baile i gcónaí. Muintir Átha Luain a bhí chucu, agus ar feadh an chéad leath go hiomlán nach mór is ag an bhfoireann baile a bhí buntáiste an imeartha.
Chuaigh Graham O'Reilly agus Gaxha gar do scór thosaigh na hoíche, ach chlis ar a n-iarrachtaí, agus bhí cóir na gaoithe le hÁth Luain sa dara leath, rud a chuir níos mó fuadar faoina gcuid ionsaithe. Mar sin féin, ní bhfuair na cuairteoirí cúl an bhua go dtí go raibh an gnath-am nach mór ídithe.
D'fhéadfadh an breathnaitheoir a mhaíomh go raibh mí-ádh ar Chiarraí sa dá chluiche sin nach bhfuaireadar comhscór féin ó cheachtar acu, mar b'é a bhí tuillte ag a gcuid iarrachtaí cosanta, agus ad an diongbháltacht a léirigh siad ag druidim le deireadh an imeartha, ag leanuint orthu ag lorg toradh fónta.
Seasfaidh an diongbháltacht sin leo nuair a bheidh toradh níos fearr fós le baint as amach anseo. Bhí Graham O'Reilly go maith sa chosaint, gan trácht ar an gcúl-báire, Wayne Guthrie, ach dá luaithe dá n-éiríonn leo cur lena n-ionsaí is ea is fearr: ní féidir le Gaxha é dhéanamh as féin, agus ar shlí is fearr é mar imreoir a chruthódh seansanna maithe do scórálaí.

Léargas an Lae
le Louise Nic an tSionnaigh
le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne – Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar
Muna cúis tromchúiseach é bheith san ospidéal ar feadh tréimhse, is taithí suimiúil é; cosúil le bheith i do “Réalt”. Ní gá duit faic a dhéanamh seachas socrú síos ann, do scíth a ligint (nó b’fhéidir dul as do mheabhair!!), fanacht ar bhia a chuirtear chugat gan ort méar a ardú nó pingin a íoc, daoine ag cur ceisteanna ort fút féin agus ag léiriú suime ionat amháin, agus daoine bailithe timpeall ort ag stánadh ort mar eiseamal faoi mhicreascóp. Más cúis thromchúiseach í, sin rud eile. Bhíos san oispideal an tseachtain seo caite, le m’fhear céile agus an fear beag. Cé go mbím ag gearán faoi cé chomh fada is atá sé uainn, nuair a fhaigheann tú leaba nó seomra ann, ní féidir luach a chur ar an gcúram.
B’shin é ár dtaithí ar aon nós – nuair a théann tú trí dhoirse A&E ar dtús, tá sé díreach cosúil leis na físeanna a chítear ar an nuacht; daoine ar fuaid na háite, ag caitheamh oícheanta ar thralaithe in hallaí os comhair na sluaite cosúil le rud éigin ó chogadh. Níl sé ceart – ach ní féidir locht a chur ar na dochtúirí ná na haltraí a dhéanann a seacht ndícheall.
Bhí ár seomra féin againn – dhéin sé sin difríocht ollmhór –tá an leaidín beag cliste agus tuigeann sé má dhéanann tú raic agus má choimeádann tú daoine eile dúisithe istoíche, gheobhair do sheomra féin. Ahem. Chuireas ceist ar ana-chuid dos na daoine a bhí ag obair ann “Cé chomh fada is atá tú anseo inniú?” Na dochtúirí, corruair – ceithre uair a chloig is fiche. Is iad siúd atá ag déanamh cinntí móra agus breithiúnais a thugann daoine ar an saol nó a mhalairt treo… agus iad dúisithe, ar tinneall agus ar a n-airdeall ar feadh fiche ceathair uair a chloig. Pianmhar amach is amach. Is daoine iad, ní meaisíní iad. Ach is seanscéal é seo; ní déarfainn go gcuireann sé ionadh ar éinne agaibh. Rud amháin beagnach nach rabhas in ann a chreidiúnt ná go gcuaigh na boic mhóra sa chóras sláinte in Éirinn os comhair na Cúirte Eorpaí chun cead a fháil iachall a chur ar dhochtúirí oibriú 24 uair a chloig as a chéile. Níl san dleathach in aon tír eile san Eoraip, a dúirt an dochtúir san. Ach chuaigh córas sláinte na tíre seo chun na cúirte – rud gan amhras a bhí dochreidte costasach ó thaobh ama, airgid, fuinnimh agus acmhainní de – chun troid i gcoinne na dlí chun coinníollacha agus cearta níos fearr a fháil. N’fheadar canathaobh nach bhfuilimid in ann dochtúirí maithe le taithí a choimeád!
Ansan bhíos ag caint le banaltra. An chuid is mó den a jab, d’inis sí dom, ná páipéarachas; ní ag tabhairt aire dos na hothair, ach ag líonadh foirmeacha.
Na daoine a dhéanann na jabanna is tábhachtaí inár sochaí – altraí, dochtúirí, múinteoirí, Gardaí, srl. – bíonn siad go minic ag brocadh le drochchoinníollacha, chomh maith le heaspa measa agus baochais. Fuaireamar leapacha, aire, aird, leigheas, suim, cadaráil chairdiúil, bia, teas, fothain agus comhairle. Thánamar abhaile le leaidín a bhí i bhfad níos sláintiúla ná mar a bhí sé ag dul isteach. Bhíomar traochta ach anashásta go bhfuil an t-ospidéal ann dúinn pé ar bith é. Cheannaíomar cartaí, bláthanna agus milseáin dos na n-aingil shaolta a chur ar bhóthar na leasa sinn. Ach ní leor san agus níl sé maith go leor. Ní féidir linn na rialacha a athrú, agus ní cóir go mbeidís ag troid i gcomhair coinníollacha níos fearr. Caillfimid daoine maithe de bharr seo, agus tuigim go hiomlán canathaobh go n-imíonn siad.

‘Sa leabhar seo, an ceann is déanaí ón údar agus ón bhfile aithnidiúil, Mícheál Ó Ruairc, tugtar spléachadh dúinn ar na blianta a mhúnlaigh a mheon agus a dhearcadh ag tús na 1970’í. Tá cuntas corraitheach sa chéad chuid ar na blianta a chaith sé ag freastal ar an ollscoil i gCorcaigh agus é gafa idir Ollscoil Chorcaí agus Ollscoil an tSaoil - ag baint leannlusanna i gKent, ag obair ar an mbuildeáil i gcathair Chorcaí agus ar fheirm taobh le hospidéal síciatrach Our Lady’s ar Bhóthar na Laoi. Nochtann sé a anam dúinn agus angst an mhic léinn, an creideamh agus an grá éagmaise idir chamáin aige. Sa tarna cuid faighmid na samplaí is fearr dá chuid iriseoireachta agus léirmheastóireachta le dhá scór bliain anuas.’ - Coiscéim
