Art Submissions Being Accepted for K-FEST 2K19 Visual arts submissions are now being accepted for K-FEST, which takes place in Killorglin, on Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2. A submission form, which requires images of proposed artwork, photo of the artist, biography, and artist statement, among other items, may be found at www.kfest.ie. Submissions costs just €10 and are due at 6 p.m. Friday, March 8. In its seventh consecutive year, K-FEST will once again take over the town of Killorglin, exhibiting approximately 100 visual artists across all disciplines, including paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. Selected artists show their work in curated, bespoke pop-up galleries throughout the town’s disused commercial and private spaces. Since 2013, K-Fest has housed over 600 visual artists and approximately 3,000 original works of art. With an attendance of more than 10,000 over the June Bank Holiday weekend, K-FEST affords new and emerging artists from Ireland and beyond the ability to showcase their work to a diverse audience, providing opportunities for patronage, partnerships, and community building with fellow artists and local residents.
Feile na Bealtaine 2019: Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers for the Feile Parade this year. We especially need creatives and anybody who may be able to assist with music/ sounds. There will be a get together next Saturday February 2nd at 10.30am at Glaise Beag (located near O'Gormans Restaurant- a semi round building). Float construction, prop making, signage, banners etc will be made there. We welcome past participants and new energy. The theme for this years parade is "Masks of the World" which will incorporate "Dance" where possible. This year we would love to have new people- such as groups, clubs, businesses, and bands. Parents who can help with their childs school in any manner (with the participating schools) will be really appreciated. Donations of fabric, paint, old hats, umbrellas, card etc are needed. We can collect. For further information please call. Aileen 085-1220182 Anne 085-1986094
All submissions selected for participation in K-FEST will automatically be entered to win the Screaming Pope Prize VI, one of Ireland’s most unique arts awards, exclusively organised by artists for artists. The prize is given for a single outstanding work of visual or performing art each year during the festival.
Thank you and we look forward to a colourful parade involving as many of you as possible.
“In 2018, we saw a performance piece win the Screaming Pope Prize, and we generally had more performance art on exhibit, moving K-FEST into the realm of a truly multi-discipline arts festival. I hope we continue to see as much varied work in 2019, as each work of art elicits a different experience and drives interactions between artists and attendees that really heighten the sense of community and inclusivity during the weekend. We may even see a new gallery or two pop up in 2019, which always gives the festival — and the works on display — a new flavour.”

Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 5th February when the feature will be the historical drama Mary Queen of Scots. Starring Saoirse Ronan as Mary,
Queen of Scots and Margot Robbie as her cousin Queen Elizabeth I, the film explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, she defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I. Each young Queen beholds her "sister" in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. The following week on Tuesday 12th February the feature will be Stan & Ollie. Starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly the film is the true story of Hollywood's greatest comedy double act, Laurel and Hardy. With their golden era long behind them, the duo attempt to reignite their film careers as they embark on what becomes their swan song - a grueling theatre tour of post-war Britain and Ireland. Stan & Ollie is a portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages, they are aware that they may be approaching their swan song, and are trying to rediscover just how much they mean to each other. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News FORMING A FARM PARTNERSHIP A partnership is a business arrangement where the profits from that business are shared among the partners in the partnership. Since 2002, partnerships have been used as a structure to amalgamate two or more farming businesses into one structure. The existing herd number or numbers must be changed into the same name as the partnership and the partnership bank account. This generally means adding a name or two names to the existing herd number (e.g. David Jones is changed to David, Mary and John Jones - Apologies to any Jones out there). Changes to a herd number must be made through the local District Veterinary Office by completing and submitting one of two forms. A note explaining the required changes to the herd number by the partnership set up process should be provided to the DVO. The forms used are An ER1.1 form should be used where names are added to a herd number provided the registration details and herd keeper are not changing, and An ER1 form where the herd keeper is changing. These forms are available from the local DVO office or can be downloaded from the Department of Agriculture’s website. In a case where two herd numbers are being amalgamated into one, a separate ER1.1 form must be completed for each herd number to change the name on each respective herd number into the partnership name. Where one of these two herd numbers is being made dormant (will no longer contain livestock), it is vital to instruct the DVO in writing not to ‘End Date’ this herd number. It is still required for payment purposes under the Basic Payment Scheme, Area of Natural Constraint scheme, Organic scheme and GLAS schemes. It is important to be aware that if changes are made to a herd number after the Basic Payment Scheme application and amendment deadlines, it may cause delays in the receipt of payments in that year.
is primarily designed to help beef farmers out there. The beef plan has been described as being excellently compiled, with farmer experience being written all over the 86 points contained within the plan. The main coordinator and national chairman Mr. Eamonn Corley has set up a working group of committed people to help promote the initiative and more help is required. He wishes to have an all-inclusive approach from all sectors of the Irish farming diaspora. A series of meetings are currently running throughout Ireland to explain the beef plan and to help improve the plan. The beef plan itself sets out as a first priority, to address the poor profit margins paid for produce on our beef farms. The organisers have a goal to engage with over 40,000 farmers throughout Ireland, with an all-inclusive approach. Currently this number is just under 20,000 and numbers are steadily increasing. According to Mr Corley, the beef plan needs more farmers to get actively involved. If you are not happy with the price of beef or the profit margin on your farm from your beef enterprise, you now have another opportunity to correct the situation. Meetings are taking place regionally and the next beef plan in Castleisland on 4th February. All are Welcome. GLAS TRADITIONAL FARM BUILDINGS GRANT SCHEME The Traditional Farm Buildings Scheme for 2019 which is basically an sub-scheme to GLAS is open to applications. This scheme funds the restoration and preservation of traditional farm buildings and structures of significant heritage value and which are conserved for agricultural use. The scheme is administered by the Heritage Council on behalf of the Department. These buildings and structures are a hugely important part of our heritage and a traditional part of our countryside. The Scheme aims to support the restoration of traditional farm buildings and related structures such as historic yard surfaces, walls, gate pillars and gates on farms, while at the same time allowing these buildings a renewed practical use on the farm. It is open to any existing GLAS Participants of which there are just under 50,000. It is jointly funded by the Department of Agriculture with funding of €6 million. The grants available range between €4,000 and €25,000 and can cover up to 75% of the cost of the works.
Any changes to the names on a herd number will require a ‘Transfer of Entitlements’ form. If the changes occur before the Basic Payment Scheme deadline, then the transfer form must be submitted before the Basic Payment Scheme deadline. Where the change occurs after the Basic Payment Scheme deadline, a transfer form will have to be submitted before the BPS closing date in the following year.
• Eligible applicants are chosen on a competitive basis and around 50 to 70 projects will be supported each year.
A new partnership bank account must be set up in the same name as the partnership. This becomes the trading account for the partnership through which all partnership income and expenditure is channelled. It is vital to take ownership of the process of moving bank accounts to ensure that any direct debits or standing orders for utilities or loan repayments are re-established in the new partnership bank account.
Nitrates Derogation applications for 2019 can now be submitted on line. The Nitrates Derogation provides farmers an opportunity to farm at higher stocking rates, subject to certain conditions designed to protect the environment and meet the requirements of the Nitrates Directive. The derogation is an important facility for more intensive farmers. The online system is aimed at simplifying the application process and assisting farmers to avoid penalties. Farmers can also remain compliant with the Regulations by managing their livestock numbers, exporting slurry/ farmyard manure or renting additional land. Almost 7,000 intensively stocked farmers requested a derogation in 2018. These farmers engage in soil sampling, nutrient management planning and comply with an increased inspection regime in order to ensure they are farming to a high environmental standard. The derogation is an important facility for more intensive farmers, particularly in the Dairy sector and it is essential that its environmental credentials are maintained. Almost 7,000 intensively stocked farmers with an agricultural area of 466,000 hectares availed of the derogation in 2018 with this being a marked increase in both the area and the number farming under derogation since 2014. Farmers are encouraged to act early and to discuss this with their agricultural advisor. The closing date for applications is 31st March 2019
The on-farm agreement should be completed by the partners and their families as part of setting up the partnership. Some professional help can be used in this document but the day-today operation of the partnership is very much the responsibility of the partners. If this aspect is not taken seriously, many of the benefits from its formation such as improved lifestyle will not become a reality. The formation of the farm partnership and the registration process is typically completed with the help of one or all of the following professionals, your agricultural consultant, your solicitor or your accountant. THE BEEF PLAN - 2019 The beef plan is an important initiative developed by a working group of dedicated Irish beef farmers. The plan is an 86 point document to help redress certain shortfalls, obstacles and difficulties, which present on most Irish beef farms today. All beef farmers are very aware of the difficulties and constraints, while endeavouring to secure a decent profit margin out of what they do. Not only are beef farmers affected by poor profit margins but all businesses associated with the spin off from beef farming throughout rural Ireland are being diminished. Farmers need to meet these challenges head-on, and now the chance seems to have presented itself. Over-dependence on direct payments is not good business or responsible farming. Farmers must work their farm be able to work their farm and be rewarded for their efforts. To help achieve this, and counteract the threats from without and within, the 86-point Beef Plan is designed to help enterprise in rural Ireland. The ''beef plan 2018 - 2025'' 10 West Kerry Live

Scéal Eile ón Leabharlann Last summer, a German visitor to the library asked if he could look around, he also mentioned that the library featured in a German sciemce fiction novel called Der Letzte seiner Art (The last of his kind) by Andreas Eschbach. Naturally, our curiosity was piqued. This novel hasn’t been translated into English but with the help of German Wikipedia and Google Translate, we discovered that the story is about a cyborg named Duane Fitzgerald who lives secretly in isolation on the Dingle Peninsula where he sometimes visits the library which is staffed by a Mrs Brannigan. So perhaps as we now have a newly installed self-service machine we should call it Mrs Brannigan? The self-service machine allows you to check-out, check in and renew books, and view your account however to do all these things, apart from returning items, you MUST have your library card with you. Simply scan the card, barcode facing upwards, and select what you want to do. You can return books without your card, just press Check In, and place the books in a pile underneath the scanner. You can print a receipt with the list of books checked out and their return date. If there are any problems, you will be directed to the desk. 12 West Kerry Live

to dress up and act a bit mad around the streets of Dingle each year. Well it may be that for some but when one counts up the €10,200 funds gathered on the day for local and national charities then it certainly is well worth the huge effort put in by our 4 local Wren Groups on Dingle's National Feast Day. Well Done Everybody. TOURISM. Another major boost and recognition for our tourism outlets in the National Newspapers recently where the Irish Independent Readers Travel Awards were announced. Kerry was top of the list as Irelands Favourite Home Holiday Destination. Castlewood House was named as offering the Best Irish Welcome and Top Place to Stay in the Country with Pax House also highly recommended. Triona Duignan had a lovely article in the same edition and mentioned Other Voices and the Food Festival as some of her favourite events with Nellie Freds, McCarthys, Cafe Pantri, The Chart House, The Little Cheese Shop, Bacús and Crinkle Stores as must visit outlets in town and of course Slea Head and The Blasket Islands as must see day tours. Great recognition for the high standards in these and indeed most outlets around the Peninsula. LAUNCH. The Kerry Historical Society will be launching the next edition of their Journal in Dingle Library on Thursday February 7th. Pat Nelligan our local author and historian will be the master of ceremonies and some of the subscribers will be present to explain the research behind their articles in the Journal. Everybody welcome. TIDY TOWNS. A few loyal volunteers are still struggling on with their efforts meeting on Saturdays at 2p.m. at the Bottle Bank and would welcome more help as the weeds did not stop growing at all this winter. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We are now inviting tenders for a feasibility study for a community led anaerobic digester plant on the peninsula and details can be found on https://dinglehub.com/projects-archive/bioenergy/. This work is sponsored by Gas Networks Ireland Innovation Fund and Údarás na Gaeltachta under the LECo project www. leco.interreg-npa.eu and will help us to better understand how bioenergy may form part of the solution to achieve energy independence for the Dingle Peninsula. It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the Dingle Hub with visits from Enterprise Ireland, Nimbus CIT and Teagasc. With projects that prove the concept of using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the areas of water monitoring and agriculture at a well advanced stage, it is now time to look to the next phase and develop the mechanisms that will support people to generate enterprise in these areas. Thanks to some very positive meetings, we have a variety of collaboration options now available to us and the next job is to identify and work with those entrepreneurs among the community who will turn that support into start-up companies. Please come and speak with us if you are thinking of starting your own business and have an interest in this area. It is very important to us to also support creative enterprise on the peninsula and we are delighted to have Maggie Breen working with us to develop initiatives to do just that. Plans are well underway for a number of workshops to provide business strategy development tools to creative businesses and individuals. We’re looking forward to working with these businesses to better understand their needs and to develop the right supports to make a difference. There are a small number of places remaining on the KAOSPILOT Masterclass that will take place in the Dingle Hub from Feb 27th to March 1st this year. The Masterclass will enable educators, facilitators and trainers to explore experiential ways of learning in order to inspire and facilitate creativity, engagement, innovation & risk in learning spaces & education and to support the drive for entrepreneurship, innovation, talent growth and further education. For further information and to book spaces visit www.dinglehub.com/events. Things are progressing nicely with the ESB Networks Dingle Project. Solar panel installations began on the 10th of January and there are now 10 installed in premises around the Peninsula with the remaining 4 due for completion by the end of this week (weather permitting!). A further 11 are planned for installation by the end of March. Last chance to contribute to the Dingle Peninsula Energy Masterplan survey www.dinglehub.com/survey – the last date for data entry will be Sunday, 3rd February. It only takes five minutes to complete and is critical to understanding the energy needs of the Peninsula and how to develop sustainable, cost effective solutions for the future. Coder Dojo sessions will commence again on Friday, March 8th and will run from 4pm to 5pm in the Dingle Hub. Places will be limited and strictly allocated on a first come first served basis. Please register on www.dingledojo.com to book your place. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. Goodbye Meat, Hello Mexit!
in the general population B12 deficiencies are experienced by meat-eaters and vegans alike as the ability to absorb B12 from our food is affected by age, stress, stomach acidity, certain drugs and other factors apart from eating or not eating meat.
Irene Ní Fhlannúra With Brexit hogging the headlines these days, it was refreshing to hear the lively discussion that followed the publication of the EAT Lancet Commission last week. In this lengthy report the commission sought to seek a solution to feed a growing global population a healthy diet while also defining sustainable food systems that will minimize damage to our planet. The furore that has been created by the thought of a break-away from meat (a Mexit) has unsettled a few to say the least. The Commission describes “a universal healthy diet, based on an increase in consumption of health-promoting foods (such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and nuts), and a decrease in consumption of unhealthy foods (such as red meat, sugar, and refined grains) that would provide major health benefits, and also increase the likelihood of attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals” for the whole planet.
The EAT Lancet Commission recognizes the link between our health and that of our planet, and the symbiotic relationship in which we have evolved. The challenges that affect human and planetary health require hard truths, honest debate and a worldwide commitment to change the underlying societal and political apathy to our health and that of our planet. In Irish news, the timing of this report could not have been better as our Taoiseach announced a couple of days before its publication that he is cutting back on meat to help reduce his carbon footprint to which our own TD Danny Healy Rae responded “any fella who doesn’t ate mate hasn’t worked hard” and that vegans are hungry and work-shy. For the right or wrong reasons, these debates have firmly placed the spotlight on the growing interest in Veganism, so what’s all the fuss about? Veganism rejects the commodity status of all animals and in doing so abstains from the use of animal products in all aspects of living. A vegan diet is solely plant-based, avoiding all foods derived from animals, birds, fish and insects. For non-vegans it may appear restrictive but for many DECEMBER it is an opportunity to explore the diversity and amazing health benefits sourced from the plant kingdom.

The typical Western diet of processed, refined foods is, nutritionally speak22 10 – 6 ing, more restrictive than a well-balanced vegan diet. Much of theSATURDAY food we consume hardly resembles food and does not provide sustenance independent SUNDAY 23Chosen as one of the top 12 –4 or nourishment as Nature intended. The vegan diet is not immune to bookshops in Ireland by the Irish Times MONDAY 24 10 – 4 manipulation and vegan processed foods are increasing in popularity, in particular with Quorn and TVP (textured vegetable protein) products TUESDAY 25 CLOSED resulting in the same pitfalls as any other junk food diet. On the plus, the vegan diet exceeds the five-a-day quota of fruit and THURSDAY 27 vegetables. This is singly the most beneficial aspect of this diet for the 28 general population as outlined clearly in the commission’s report.FRIDAY For years, our health authorities have advocated this miserable target, which SATURDAY 29 has seen a small bottle of orange juice (processed) counting as one of your SUNDAY 30 five, as does canned peas (processed) and other altered fruits, vegetables and grains! Five fruit and vegetables per day represents the absolute MONDAY 31 minimum required by a healthy adult. A figure of 8-10 portions made up of mostly fresh veg and some whole fruit (not juice) is more realistic to JANUARY 2019 maintain and protect our health. Another plus for the vegan diet is the inclusion of a wider variety of wholegrains, legumes, pulses, nuts and seeds to meet protein requirements. Meat, poultry and fish are known TUESDAY 1 as "complete" proteins because they have the essential amino acids required by the body, the amino acids we need to get from our diet. A varied WEDNESDAY 2 vegan diet will provide all such amino acids. You only have to look at an THURSDAY 3 elephant (or a cow) to know that a plant-based diet can sustain a strong, healthy body. Grains such as Quinoa and Amaranth have the same amino FRIDAY 4 acid profile as meat, yet easier to digest, contain less saturated fat and SATURDAY 5 cholesterol than their animal counterparts and loaded with fibre to boot! Vegans source their fats from seeds, nuts, avocados, coconut, olives and flax which provides necessary essential fatty acids, omega 3, 6 and 9 (often deficient in a Western diet). Omega 3, a healthy fat most noted for anti-inflammatory properties is not exclusive to fish oils. ALA (alpha lipoic acid) found in flaxseed, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and chia seeds convert to EPA and DHA, the active components of omega 3. Blue-green algae including chlorella and spirulina are also sources of omega 3 and can be used as supplement if needed. Minerals - calcium, zinc, iodine and iron are not exclusive to the meat/fish eating population and with proper guidance on how to use plants, in particular seeds, wholegrains and sea vegetables, the vegan diet can easily provide ample supply. The biggest nutrition concern with a vegan diet is meeting the demand for vitamin B12 as it is easier to get B12 from meat than lentils. However, 18 West Kerry Live

Roast Butter Nut Squash, Lentils and Fennel Salad Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
Ingredients
Method,
1/2 butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and sliced lengthways into wedges
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Sometimes the word salad strikes fear in people and especially at this time of year. Hopefully this will convince anyone who does not agree that a salad can be tasty anytime.
2 fennel bulbs, trimmed, halved and sliced lengthways
Consider a few things that will always help you put together a good salad, these are; will you serve it warm or cold?, will you cook some of the items?, how will you cook them?, what seasonings will make it tastier? Answer these and you will get great results, and remember there several answers for everyone one of these questions which means by having two or three ingredients you can have so many different salads. I have used tahini in this, it is a sesame seed paste and is available in most shops. It has a slightly bitter taste but adds so much to dishes. If you have had hummus, it is a key ingredient in that. This is just one example of a tasty dish that is vegan, if you want to learn more about vegan food why not join us this Saturday 2nd Feb at Dingle Cookery School for our ‘Vegan Cooking Made Easy’ where we will show you how to make great vegan dishes for everyone regardless if you are vegan or not.
2 garlic cloves peeled Rapeseed Oil ½ tsp. chilli flakes (optional) 1 small onion peeled and diced 1 carrot diced finely 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp fennel seeds 200g of puy lentils, rinsed in cold water (no need to soak) 400ml of vegetable stock, or chicken stock For the dressing 20ml cider vinegar
Put the butternut squash, fennel, and garlic in a bowl and add some oil, salt, pepper and chilli flakes (if using them). Mix well and spread this on a tray and then put into the oven. This will take from 30 minutes to 40 minutes for the vegetables to brown and soften. Meanwhile take the a medium sized pot and place it over a low to medium heat, add a little oil and then add the onions and a pinch of salt. Cook this for about 5 minutes, add in the carrots and cook for another few minutes. Add in the cumin and fennel seeds followed by the lentils and stock. Cook this for about 25 minutes or so. Taste the lentils and they should have a slight bite to them. Once they are done strain off the water and add the vinegar, lemon juice, oil and tahini while it is warm. Remove the vegetables from the oven and add them to the dressed lentils. Season the lentils with salt and pepper, add the dill and a drizzle of oil.
50g tahini 1 lemon juiced 60ml extra virgin olive oil 1 bunch of dill chopped Salt and pepper

Bímid go léir ag tnúth go mór le Lá ‘le Bríde tar éis na Nollag. Ag tnúth le gealas agus beocht. Fé mar a deir an rann:
Gabhaim molta Bhríde
Ba í Bríde féin a dhein an chéad chros agus í ar thuairisc taoisigh a bhí ar leaba a bháis. Agus í ag caint leis, phrioc sí suas tuí nó luachair a bhí ar an urlár agus dhein sí cros as. D’fiafraigh an taoiseach di cad a bhí sí ag déanamh. D’inis Bríde scéal Íosa dó. D’éist an taoiseach go cúramach léi agus dúirt gur theastaigh uaidh go mbaistfí é. Baisteadh an taoiseach sara bhfuair sé bás.
Molaimís go léir í. Lóchrann geal na Laighneach Soilsiú feadh na tíre Ceann ar ógaibh Éireann Ceann na mban ar míne.
Brat Bhríde Chuirtí píosa éadaigh amach ar thor an oíche roimh ré agus choimeádtaí go cúramach é i rith na bliana mar go raibh leigheas ann. Fé Bhrat Bhríde sinn. An Brídeog
Aoibhneas! Saolaíodh Naomh Bríde láimh le Fochairt i nDún Dealgain, Contae Lú. Dubhthach ab ainm dá hathair agus Broicseach ab ainm dá máthair. Theastaigh óna hathair go bpósfadh sí ach chuaigh Bríde sna mná rialta. Chuaigh Bríde ag lorg talún ar fheirmeoir i gCill Dara. Dhiúltaigh sé dí ar dtúis. Lean sí ag tathant air ag rá nach raibh uaithi ach fairsinge a clóca a thabhairt di. Ghéill sé di ar deireadh agus má dhein leathanaigh a clóca ar an dtalamh go dtí
Bhí nós ann go dtéadh leanaí óga ó thigh go tigh le Brídeog déanta as tuí. Gheibhdís cúpla pingin nó dorn siúicre nó cúpla ubh. Ba bhreá le muintir an tí an Bhrídeog a thabhairt chucu. Leanaíodh rath agus séan í a deirtí. Lá le Muire na gCoinneal Sin é an dara lá d’Fheabhra. Beannaítear coinnle céaracha an lá san le húsáid sa tsáipéal agus ag na stáisiúin i rith na bliana.

so violently that she became unmanageable, and despite the desperate efforts of her crew, was driven on the dangerous rocks off Ballydavid Head, outside Smerwick Head. She struck violently and immediately huge seas washed over her battering her sides with terrific force.
Edited by Ted Creedon
The coastguards ashore noticed her plight, and giving the alarm in the neighbouring village, rushed off to the cliffs overlooking the raging seas which swept across the rocks where the vessel was aground.
THE CROW ROCK From the Kerry Evening Post, 01 September, 1888. The Crow Rock, in Dingle Bay, is about a nautical mile off the land, and is always partly dry at half ebb, and remains so until the flood tide is made, when it is entirely covered with water. It is called ‘an Fiach’ in the Irish language i.e. ‘the Raven’, and when dry, birds – chiefly crows and cormorants – have been in the habit of perching on it – hence the appellation of ‘Crow Rock’ from time immemorial. There is a submerged rock between it and the land which scarcely ever dries, and is called the ‘Raven’s Mother’. These [two rocks] are the only impediments to navigation in that fine and expansive sheet of water known as Dingle Bay – one of the finest bays in Europe if not in the known world, being next in beauty and extent to the far-famed Bay of Naples. - John D. Nagle
Lifelines were speedily shot to the wreck, and amidst scenes of intense excitement, one by one, three survivors, in a half drowned state, were brought ashore. A rope ladder had to be utilised to convey them to the top of the cliffs. From one of the men the distressing intelligence was learned that there had been six others of the crew on board, but had all perished in the boiling surf. Amongst those rescued was the captain of the ship. Soon after being driven ashore the vessels foundered, and no trace of her can now be seen above the water.

O Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Ó Lá le Bríde bíonn an lá ag dul i bhfaid agus bíonn misneach ar chách cé go síntear mórán caorach más fíor an seanfhocal fé mí Feabhra. Mar sin ná fág gearradh tú Lá na Bá Riabhaidh. Is mó san caora óg ón mbliain caite, ná bíonn na fiacla acu le tabhairt fé anaithe deireadh mí Feabhra nó tús an Mhárta. Caitear cothú breise mar min a thabhairt dóibh seo nó is sínte a gheobhair iad. Is beag duine go mbeirtear air le tamall do chlianta. Na feirmeoirí óga is dócha go cífidh siad a ndóthain droch aimsir. Blianta romhainn ‘níos fliche agus níos déanaí. Thugas fé ndeara i mbliana go raih sadhlas á ithe. Tá fhios ag gach feirmeoir anois go gcaithfidh sadhlas maith a bheith aige agus ná fiú mórán an tsean chaora mantach. Tá teocht na cruinne de réir dealraimh ag árdu le blianta agus mura réitear an fhadhb báthfar agus loscfar furmhór don nDomhan mhóir. Tá sé seo cloiste agaibh: beidh orainn laghdú mór a chur ar an ndé-ocsaod carboine a eascarann ó inill gluaisteán, ó thinte áirithe agus séideadh ainmhithe, mar an bhó. Tá scata eile. Ach dá mbogfaí beagán ar bheagán agus go dtabharfadh furmhór na gcomhlachtai agus tíortha móra aird ar an bhfadhb tharlódh ná beadh an scrios chomh mór agus atá tuartha. Caithfear breis crainn a chur. Cuireann sé ionadh agus díomá orm go bhfuil ceannairí stáit agus gioblacháin eile ag rá nách bhfuil aon bhaol ná ciall leis an mbagairt atá i ndán don ndomhan seo againne. Ní léacht í seo, ná a leithéid, ach fadhb atá ós ár gcomhair amach. An baol atá ann ná beidh an fhadhb atá ag bagairt, gafa tharainn agus gan aon dul siar. Ansan a bheidh an t-ochón. Caid Beidh na rialacha nua CLG i bhfeidhm as seo amach, táid cheanna, ach ná ciorrófar ar an méid ‘pas’ a ceadaíotar d’imreoirí. Caithfidh an speach amach ón mbáide dul chomh fada le líne an daichead slat. Seo an mhallacht is mó atá ag lot cluichí caide. Aontaim leis ha hathruithe mar gan cead caid a chur siar uait, ach ba mhaith liom go gcoscfaí na pasanna go dtí trí cinn, rud a chuirfeadh deire leis an ‘gCispheil’. Is baolach go bhfuil eagla ar cheannasaíocht CLG agus na gContae gan dul thar trí phas – measaid ná oirfeadh ciorrú an líon pas do scata contae. Cuma an ndeanfar nó ná déanfar tiocfaidh an lá, agus ní fada uainn é, go chuirfear cosc ar phasanna thar trí iarracht i bhfeidhm mar go bhfuil caid loitithe ag na pasanna céanna. Chaithfeá bheith bodhar caoch gan sin a thuiscint. Ach tá moltaí maithe i bhfeidhm. As seo amach beidh an canrán agus na gearáin a chuirfidh d’iachaimh ar an gCLG gníómhú i gcás na bpasanna. Nach raibh sé ait go raibh ar imreoirí imirt oíche Dé Sathairn agus ar an nDomhnach seo caite mar a raibh ortha aghaidh a thabhairt ar bháisteach agus sneachta fuar á thál agus á stealladh sa mhullach ar imreoirí, lucht riartha agus an lucht féachana. Bail ó Dhia ortha ní raibh aon bheann acu ar an síon, ní foláir. Dubhshláin caide Chuaidh buachaillí óga peile fé 14 bliana na Gaeltachta go Londain Shasana an deireadh seachtaine seo caite. Bhíodar ag
imirt cluichí dubhshláine le foirne thall, Club Cholmcille ó Hertfordshire agus Club Tara ó Londain Thiar Thuaidh. I bpáirc CLG Glen Rovers i Watford a imríodh na cluichí. Thaistil fiche imreoir, seachtar tuismitheoir agus triúr oifigeach ó Chlub na Gaeltachta go Luton ón bhFearann Fuar. Deirid gur bhaineadar idir óg agus aosta an-shásamh as a dturas. Dúirt urlabhraí fhoireann na Gaeltachta, go rabhdar an-bhuíoch as an gcóir a cuireadh ortha agus focal fé˙leith do Ger Ó Sé ó Dhoire Fhionnain Uibh Rathach a chabhraigh go mór leo ó thús deireadh. ‘Cairde sea sinn go léir agus molaimid an dá fhoireann Naomh Colmcille agus Tara a bhuaidh orainn’ arsa urlabhraí. Hammer Toes
wear that are too tight at the toes crowding your toes into a space in which they can't lie flat.
Buy shoes at the end of the day. Your feet swell slightly throughout the day.
Eddie O'Grady
toe length(if your second toe is too long)
Check your size. As you age, your shoe size might change — especially the width. Measure both feet and buy for the larger foot.
Sex (women seem more prone but maybe that is down to fashion ie. high heels etc.?) Complications
Hammertoe and mallet toe are foot deformities that occur due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. This is a deformity that causes your toe to bend or curl downward instead of pointing forward. It can affect any toe. Causes Hammertoe and mallet toe have been linked to: An imbalance in toe muscles leading to instability, which in turn can cause the toe to contract. Genetics(say one of your parents has it). It may be present at birth. It may develop over time due to arthritis. Diabetes could also increase your risk. An injury in which you stub, jam or break a toe can make it more likely for that digit to develop hammertoe. Poorly fitting and/or high-heeled shoes or foot30 West Kerry Live
At first, a hammertoe or mallet toe might maintain its flexibility. Eventually, the tendons of the toe can contract and tighten, causing your toe to become permanently bent. The toe may become painful and moving it may also be difficult or painful. The raised portion of the toe or toes can rub against your shoes, causing painful corns or calluses.
Buy shoes that fit. Be sure shoes are comfortable before you buy them. If necessary, a shoe repair store might be able to stretch shoes in tight spots, but it's better to buy them to fit.
Eddie O’Grady
Prevention Relieving the pain and pressure of hammertoe may involve changing your footwear and/or wearing orthotics. If you have a more severe case of hammertoe or mallet toe, you might need surgery to get relief. You can avoid many foot, heel and ankle problems with shoes that fit properly. Here's what to look for when buying shoes: Make sure there is adequate toe room. Avoid shoes with pointed toes. Low heels. Avoiding high heels. Make sure shoes are supportive and comfortable. Lace them up properly Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) These additional tips can help you buy the right shoes:

In recent months members of the Cloghane Brandon area have decided to set up a First Responder Group in order to provide basic life support in case of emergencies in their local community. A First Responder is a person trained to a minimum level of basic life support in CPR and the use of an AED/defibrillator, who attends an actual or potentially life threatening emergency such as a cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke or choking. The group will be linked to the National Ambulance Service and the main function of the group is to better someone’s chances of survival in the case of an emergency. In order to improve the service and make it more practical and efficient we are looking for more members to come on board. No previous qualifications or certificates are required and all new members would be welcomed. A short informative course on CPR and the use of defibrillators will be provided to any new members free of charge. For any more information please don’t hesitate to contact Stephen on 087 2632414. Series 2, Vol. 18, 2018
The Kerry Archaeological & Historical Society will launch the latest edition of their Journal in Dingle Library on Thursday, 7th February at 7pm. All five articles in this edition of the Journal have a direct link to West Kerry, ranging from smuggling to archaeology to local folklore. As such it is most appropriate to launch the book in Dingle town and Pat Nelligan, local historian and author, will launch the book along with the Journal editor, Tony Bergin, and a number of the authors. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night and will also be available for collection by paid up members of the Society. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided afterwards (with many thanks to Dingle Library).
A Snapshot of the Journal Articles The articles in this year’s Journal are wide ranging and cover a number of different topics that will appeal to those with an interest in the history, archaeology and folklore of County Kerry, and particularly West Kerry. Dr Conor Brosnan from Dingle, presents an article on ‘Smuggling in Dingle’, which was prevalent in the 18th and 19th Centuries. In his comprehensive paper, Conor discusses why smuggling came about, who was involved, what goods were ‘run’, how this was conducted and what the authorities did to curtail this. Consulting contemporary sources, family papers and the minutes of the Irish Revenue Commissioners, Conor brings to light a huge amount of information on ‘Free Trade’ on the peninsula. The main goods smuggled included tea, spirits and tobacco and many of the principal houses in Dingle town had ‘gables seven feet thick con32 West Kerry Live
taining false chimneys for storage of the goods’. He also includes some excellent anecdotes on the people who conducted smuggling: Such as John Hickson, the last Sovereign of Dingle, who sent the revenue authorities on a wild goose chase to Brandon Bay while he landed a large cargo of brandies and wines in Dingle; or Simon McKenna who ‘had casks of brandy conveyed through the town and lodged in his own stores and shop which stood at the current site of Benners Hotel’; or the very respectable shopkeeper, Conner, who was arrested after being ‘found at midnight at the head of forty horses with a bale of tobacco hanging on each side and a third on their back’. All in all, an anti-authoritarian attitude existed on the peninsula which promoted smuggling. A quote from the Vicar General of Ardfert said ‘My friend this not France. It is Kerry. Where we do as we please. We’ll teach you some Kerry law, which is to do no right and to take no wrong’. Dr James O’Driscoll from the University of Aberdeen, presents an archaeology paper on Solar Systems the impressive ‘Hillforts of Faha (near Brandon Mountain) and Caherconree’ (in the heart of Tom Kennedy the Slieve Mish Mountains). Finally, Dr Toby Barnard, University of Oxford (Retired), presents an interesting article on local politics and familial tensions in the borough of Dingle in the late sixteenth century. Entitled ‘Petticoat Government? The borough of Dingle during the 1770s’ the article addresses the fallout between Maurice, sixteenth Knight of Kerry, and his uncle Robert over inheritance rights and the parliamentary representation of Dingle. Maurice’s wife, Lady Anne, was thought to be a central protagonist in this row and this led to the publication of a pamphlet in London in 1780 criticising her involvement and detailing the rift between Uncle and nephew.

Based on the reports of two members of the Society of Friends who travelled through Kerry in November 1846, their testimony provides a shocking eyewitness account of the hardship and suffering that was evident in North, West and South Kerry at this time. Jobseeker’s Benefit & Subsidiary Employment Question I was working full-time and was also doing a few hours with another company in the evenings. I recently lost my fulltime job. Can I claim Jobseeker’s Benefit and continue working a couple of hours each evening? Answer Jobseeker's Benefit is a weekly payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) to people who are out of work and are covered by social insurance (PRSI). As a general rule, you cannot get Jobseeker's Benefit for any day you are employed or self-employed. However, it is possible to do some subsidiary work and still get Jobseeker's Benefit for the day in question. Subsidiary employment is work that could have been done while you were in full-time employment and outside your normal working hours. For example, you may work a fulltime job during the day and have a parttime job in the evening. The part-time job is known as subsidiary or secondary employment if you were able to do the part-time work without it affecting your full-time job for a period of at least 6 months. If you have subsidiary employment, you should always check with the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to
see whether or not your Jobseeker's Benefit will be affected. If you have less than 117 paid PRSI contributions in the 3 years before becoming unemployed there is a limit on the amount you can earn from subsidiary employment while getting Jobseeker’s Benefit. From 1 January 2019, the amount you can earn has increased to €144 per week (or €7,500 over 12 months). There is no earnings limit if you have more than 117 paid PRSI contributions. If you are a farmer with other full-time employment, your farming will be your subsidiary employment. Movie Review
Michael Healy-Rae TD Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae
Stan & Ollie
Working with David Russell Clinics-3rd Mon of the month.
Pierce Hoare On a recent trip to the Dingle Phoenix Cinema, I had the pleasure of seeing Stan & Ollie. It is a 2019 drama/comedy starring Steve Coogan (Philomena, Hot Fuzz) and John C Reilly (Wreck it Ralph, Step-Brothers). Before seeing the movie I had a limited experience with the comedy duo so I didn’t know what to expect. After the movie I ended up loving it. The film is about the life of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, 16 years after the height of their fame. The movie follows the pair trying to find work in the 1950’s, long after their silent short films have been replaced by feature films and television. While the titular duo are hilarious on and off stage, even their wives get their funny moments (some of which is the best in the film). The camera work in the film starts off great with a long take at the start but after that there’s not much of note. The costume & set design in the movie is amazing, with everything feeling like it truly belongs in 1953. The only complaint that I have is that the film was too short. While the film was too late to be nominated for an Oscar this year, I suspect it will get on the list for the 2020 Oscars. If you are interested in Laurel & Hardy then I would recommend seeing Stan & Ollie while it is still in cinemas.
