Like many Irish projects, this one was seeded in a pub conversation. As with most Kerry businesses, it’s rooted in the past. Publican Finn MacDonald sees his new venture as growing and flourishing through all of Corca Dhuibhne seasons - not just the bright, sunny ones - and being an amenity for peninsula residents of which visitors can avail, not the other way around. Reopening at the weekend after a test run last week, Dick Mack’s Bottle Library offers classic wines, fine cigars, and rare whiskey. Finn doesn’t see their selection as competing with other retailers of wine and spirit in Dingle. Rather, he sees it as complimenting the market and filling a long-vacant gap. Like many in the area, he has felt we were missing a place to get ‘the good stuff’. Enlisting the advice of chef and author, Trevis L Gleason, Finn and bar manager Derek O'Sullivan have filled out their team with passionate, professional, personalities from the West Kerry wine scene. Yes, there is a West Kerry Wine Scene! Currently located in the storied main bar room of Dick Mack’s Pub – “The short-term plan” as Finn calls it. Works are in place to move the shop into another space in the pub with its own entrance and a cozy, library feel. “While a first weekend doesn’t prove a concept”, says Finn, “this past weekend certainly didn’t disprove our idea”. When asked what constitutes ‘classic’ wines, Trevis cut through the flowery talk and stated matter-of-factly, as a chef might, “These are food wines. Some to enjoy as you prepare, others to start a meal. Some to accompany, and those with which to linger well into the night after a great meal. Dingle offers some of the best food – both local produce as well as prepared foods – in the world. Now it has a shop to get wines of equal caliber and reputation.” Finn wants to ensure that no one feels intimidated in The Bottle Library. There are prices from the teens into the hundreds – something for nearly everyone. And, while advice can surely be sought, there will be, as the whole staff insist, “No teaching. No Tuxedos. Just great wines”. When asked if he thought there was a market for such offerings without the international tourist trade yet returned, Finn remarked that we all have birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, and go to friends’ homes for dinner. Also, the West Kerry palate is a discerning and well-traveled one. It’s not like we haven’t had our share of the good stuff on holidays. Besides, as Dick Mack’s Bottle Library’s ethos states, “Today is just one special bottle away from being an occasion.” Dick Mack’s Bottle Library on Green Street, Dingle is open TuesdaySunday 12:00-20:00 through the month of June with expanded summer hours beginning in July. West Kerry Live and the entire community raise a glass and welcome Dick Mack’s Bottle Library to the town and wish them long life and good health. Sláinte!

Community Notice Does anyone else living in Dingle think it's a good idea to form some kind of residents’ organisation or cumann cónaitheoirí to represent the interests of people living in the town centre?
Dingle town still has a community within its town centre that other towns would envy. Successive government policies have strived to encourage residential communities in town centres but Dingle still has this. It’s a mixed community of all ages from elderly people to small children, people whose families have lived here for generations and people who’ve moved here more recently and now call Dingle home. I’m sure there are many areas of common interest that we can highlight and strive to improve and have a voice at the table representing our interests when decisions are made. If anyone thinks this might be worth discussing further, please contact me, Majella at 087-6160010. IGNATIUS O'CONNOR

In Search of Barn Owls in Kerry BirdWatch Ireland are undertaking a survey of Barn Owls in Kerry this summer and they are requesting the assistance of the public and landowners to report information on Barn Owls to help direct the survey efforts. Over recent decades, Barn Owl populations have suffered extensive declines and are now a Red-listed Barn Owl feeding chick Bird of Conservation Concern Photo: Richard Mills in Ireland. As a top predator and sentinel species for the health of our countryside, the declines in Barn Owl populations are extremely worrying. The changing agricultural landscape has resulted in the loss of suitable habitats, including a reduction of prey-rich foraging habitat and nesting sites. Alongside these land use changes and the loss of habitat, the increased use and increased toxicity of anti-coagulant rodenticides, and the expansion of major road networks are likely to be the main factors which have influenced the declines in the Barn Owl populations. Although Barn Owl populations have declined over recent decades, Kerry has remained a stronghold for the population. The county holds one of the highest number of known nest sites in the country, and recent conservation efforts to help Barn Owls in Kerry, which has included providing purpose-built nest boxes, and ensuring protection of known nest sites, have proved successful. The Barn Owl survey in Kerry (supported by Kerry County Council through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s National Biodiversity Action Plan Fund) aims to establish how Barn Owls are currently faring in the county and to determine how the conservation measures previously implemented are working. The findings of the survey will be used to ensure the protection of nest sites and to direct targeted conservation efforts which will include the provision of nest boxes to help the local population. Michael O’Clery, of the Kerry Branch of BirdWatch Ireland, who leads the Barn Owls survey in Kerry, commented, “it is a very interesting time for Barn Owls in Kerry, the population seems to be doing well and it is great to see how many of our nest boxes have been taken up by Barn Owls and used for nesting. The Greater White-toothed Shrew, which is an introduced small mammal, is present in neighbouring counties and although it has not been recorded in Kerry yet, it will likely soon colonise and it will be interesting to see what affect this has on the local Barn Owl population“. To assist the survey efforts, BirdWatch Ireland are requesting information on Barn Owls in the county. John Lusby of BirdWatch Ireland explained the citizen science element of the survey, “It is a very special experience to glimpse the ghostly form of the Barn Owl floating silently over their hunting grounds in the dead of night, or to hear their eerie screeches and strange snoring calls. Everybody remembers such an encounter, and we are asking people to report this information to us, which will greatly help our survey efforts to locate nest sites and to determine the health of the population“. He added, “we are also looking for information on Barn Owl nest boxes in the county, we have installed nest boxes throughout the county but so have many different groups and individuals who have gone to great effort to help Barn Owls in Kerry. We hope to get a better idea of how many nest boxes are in place and the portion that are being used by Barn Owl, and we would ask that anyone that has put up a nest box to let us know“. The Biodiversity Officer of Kerry County Council says that Kerry County Council is delighted to support the survey and hopes the project will ensure the iconic barn owl continues to form a part of the county’s biodiversity into the future.

One for the Boys for Men’s Health Week! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Gentlemen, mark your calendar for Men’s Health Week starting 14th June 2021. There will be loads of events and campaigns raising awareness for male-related health topics in the media so do keep an eye out. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer to affect men, after lung cancer. One in eight men in Ireland will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system producing a fluid component of semen that nourishes sperm. As men age, the prostate may become enlarged in a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous condition. Prostate cancer also causes enlargement of the prostate. Both conditions share similar symptoms of frequent urge to urinate, difficulty when urinating and/ or incomplete emptying of the bladder. While these conditions are quite rare in men under forty, they are increasing in those over 60 years. As with many cancers, the risk of incidence increases with age because we are exposed to cancer-causing factors over a longer period of time and our ability to naturally fend off risks may diminish with age through loss of vitality and health, poorer nutrition and less active lifestyles. Many cancers, including prostate may take years to manifest which is also reflected in the statistics relating to cancer risk and aging. While the statistics are alarming laid out in black and white, a colourful diet is a sure way to reduce your risk of prostate cancer and improve the outcomes and survival rates for those already diagnosed. The World Cancer Research Fund Continuous Update Project (CUP) has revised 2018 findings on diet, nutrition, physical activity and Prostate Cancer. The CUP reported that there is now strong evidence that obesity and height (being tall) are significant factors associated with risk of advanced Prostate cancer. They also reported evidence that higher consumption of dairy products, diets high in calcium, low plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration (vitamin E) and low plasma selenium concentration may increase prostate cancer risk. Unless you were stretched on a rack as a kid, being tall is mainly down to genetics – however, all the other significant factors mentioned in the report are directly associated with the diet and lifestyle choices you make every day. Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant responsible for the red pigment of tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, is a crucial ingredient to reduce prostate cancer risk. It is thought that lycopene targets specific free radicals associated with DNA damage to prostate cells which can instigate the onset of prostate cancer. Tomato products such as passata and bottled tomato juice are also a rich source of lycopene, offering us year-round protection when fresh produce is out of season. Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and selenium mentioned in the CUP report, work in a similar way and are very specific to prostate cells.
Pomegranate seeds also provide important antioxidants such as polyphenols, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. Like lycopene, these antioxidants protect the prostate cells from free radical damage caused by metabolic activity and environmental toxins. Anthocyanins may also reduce the risk of urinary and bladder infections associated with enlarged prostate. Pomegranate seeds have the added benefit of inhibiting oestrogen production, which is a possible cause of BPH in older men. Cruciferous vegetables are top defenders when it comes to prostate cancer. Sulfuronane in these vegetables acts as a potent anticancer agent and is particularly beneficial in hormone sensitive prostate cancer. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale can be easily incorporated into the diet – just don’t boil them to a mush! Steaming or simmering in a little water will help to ensure your prostate gets the best from these veggies. Soybeans, although controversial, are worth a mention. Populations with higher than average intakes of soybeans tend to have lower incidence of both prostate and oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer. This is attributed to phytoestrogens which offer protection from the harmful, growth promoting effects of oestrogen on these cancer cells. Other legumes and lentils also provide this kind of protection and fibre, which helps eliminate excess oestrogen from the body. These populations also enjoy a diet rich in fresh vegetables, eat very little meat and no dairy – all of which are relevant to both breast and prostate cancer. It is unclear if the protective nature of these diets is due to soybean intake but more likely due to a healthier approach to eating and the increased consumption of plant-based foods. A moderate intake of protein from oily fish, nuts and seeds will provide healthy fats which reduce risk of prostate cancer. Monounsaturated oils from olives, pumpkin seeds and avocado (rich in vitamin E) are protective, while the heated, treated oils such as corn, rapeseed and vegetable oils increase risk. Fried foods, trans fats, red meat, sugar, dairy and high calcium intakes are also associated with increased risk of prostate cancer which may explain the rising rates among the Irish men! Extracts from Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin seed, available as supplements may be included in a prostate-friendly diet but do seek good advice on these supplements. Selenium, Zinc, B vitamins and folate can be added to the manly list and are readily available in foods such as brazil nuts, wholegrains, fish and pumpkin seeds and topped up if needed in supplement form. So, there ye have it! Men of West and Mid Kerry, enjoy Father’s Day and Men’s Health Week - the kitchen is officially all yours! Farming News Louis Murchan €10 MILLION SOIL SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS PROGRAMME LAUNCHED The Department of Agriculture, et al recently launched a major investment of €10 million in a pilot Soil Sampling and Analysis Programme. This substantial programme is aimed at putting soil carbon, soil health and fertility at the very centre of our future agricultural model. Farmers know that a healthy soil is the basis for all farming be it livestock, tillage or horticulture. Detailed knowledge about soils on our farms will increase economic and environmental sustainability. The programme will provide detail on soil fertility and soil pathogens as well as soil carbon levels. It will also provide soil-specific nutrient management advice and determine fertiliser and organic manure applications (right nutrient type, right application rate, right time & right place). The incentive for the farmer is to receive comprehensive soil analysis reports with next generation data which, with advisory support will be used as a soil management tool on the farm. The farmer does not receive a monetary payment however the soil sampling programme, at field scale, will provide the basis for the next generation of soil-specific nutrient management advice and underpin targeted fertiliser and organic manure applications (right nutrient type, right application rate, right time & right place) across all farming systems in Ireland. Additionally, the outputs of the programme will identify the stock of carbon at a farm level, thus providing the opportunity for protection and enhancement into the future. The programme will gather what is referred to as baseline soil information to enable DAFM devise a better policy and strategy etc in relation to this to assist in enhancing nutrient and environmental sustainability and advice at farm level. The programme will assist in the integration of environmental policies and objectives across water, soil, air and climate change and their alignment with the overall objectives of policy such as the Green Deal and the new agri-food strategy. Having baseline data on the physical, chemical, and biological status of our soils at farm level is critical for both farmers and policy makers. The purpose of this programme therefore is to develop a baseline national data set at farm level for these parameters: •
Macro- and micronutrients for agronomic advice and water quality risk assessment.
•
Soil carbon(C) relating primarily improving climate objectives and soil health.
• Soil pathogen assessment as a biosecurity measure for policy guidance. The pilot programme will be in place by mid-July 2021, with the soil sampling commencing from September 2021. There is a limit on the number of samples that can be taken per participating farm of 16 samples, the equivalent of 64 ha. This limit is in place to ensure maximum uptake in terms of geographic region and farming system across the country. Let us hope that this “pilot” is fairer and more successful that the last one. RESULTS BASED ENVIRONMENT-AGRI PILOT PROJECT (REAP) More huge disappointing news is the recent announcement by Ministers McConologue and Hackett that only a small percentage of those who applied for the new REAP scheme will be successful. Farming has now become a society of two halves, and we really do live in the deep south, now. Many are now second-class citizens, being excluded from this new scheme. Why? Why? Why? And the question must be asked, what criteria were used to select the successful applicants. Why would one 30 ha farmer with 100 sheep qualify, while another with a very similar farm and flock size not qualify. Farmers are being informed by letter that they were successful in their application for the scheme, but the unsuccessful ones will have to wait a week to be told that they were not. What sort of a system, or a scheme is this? And what sort of a scheme excludes approximately 4 out of every 9 applicants. This is not now the time to call your advisors, they are just mere cogs in the engine, now is the time to calls one’s local politician. 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
We all know that this is only a “transitional” scheme as described by some of the politico’s or mandarins in Agriculture House, but why in God's name can they decide that one farmer can earn up to €7,000 per year on it, while the other 60% who applied must just watch from over the hedge. Minister McConologue, you are implored to wake up and smell the coffee, you will not see the inside of the Dail, after the next election, if the farming community decide that they don’t want you. You are both a party representative, and a Government representative, and now is the time for you to wear your “Government Hat” The Good Minister stated that “REAP will help demonstrate the environmental value and economic returns from specific farm measures and allows a more focused use of funding - a win-win outcome, for both the environment and farmers. This significant level of investment in developing on-farm, agri-environment measures shows the commitment of farmers to achieving our ambitious environmental goals while investing in farm incomes. I would encourage all farmers selected for participation to fully engage with the process by working closely with their Advisor. But what about those not selected. This applies only to the select few. Irish farmers have shown huge interest in participating in the project with over 10,800 applications to participate received by the closing date in midMay. But to many, this good faith has been met with a slap in the face. These roughly 55% of original applicants were excluded from GLAS, for various reasons, including being tied into REPS 3, and now must wait another two years, in the hope that they will gain access to another scheme in 2023. We are told that the number accepted into the scheme is double the originally intended numbers. That is only a further insult, as those excluded now know that they were so close, but don’t know why they were unsuccessful. Minister McConologue, and especially Minister Hackett (who purports to represent the environmental agenda, and this is an environmental scheme), please explain why so many farmers were excluded from REAP. Child Farm Safety Week commences in Northern Ireland Yes, this is across the border, but we are on the one island, and it doesn’t matter where the children are or who they belong to, they are children, and must be looked after. If we can’t protect our children, why bother trying to look after anyone. This is what they call as “Big Boy’s Rules”. We should know them, and if we don’t, we shouldn’t be involved, and shouldn’t be allowed to be involved. Everyone must get involved, and by getting involved means being very careful, not making any stupid decisions, not letting one’s guard down and not lowering one’s standards. Most 12-year-olds and upwards are on school holidays for the past two weeks, and some are already getting bored, a bit “antsy” and somewhat adventurous. This must be watched, as curiosity killed the cat. Also, the younger ones will be free in two weeks, and they will be like a fox in the chicken coop. They will be out looking for fun and playing games. And again, they must be watched. Accidents are not caused by accident; they are someone’s fault. Don’t let that fault be yours. LAMENESS IN SHEEP THIS SPRING/SUMMER Lameness on sheep farms is a never-ending issue and headache for farmers. Not only is it an animal welfare issue, but the loss in performance and the expense incurred in treating lame sheep, is a costly one for farmers. It will never be fully eliminated from your flock but it can be reduced. The two main causes of lameness in sheep in Ireland are foot-rot and scald. Scald is very common in lambs and is the first stage of foot-rot. It’s important that before any control programme is put in place, farmers first and foremost identify what is the cause of the problem. The causes of lameness in sheep are many and varied. Ninety percent of cases relate to scald and foot-rot, with the other 10% arising from sores, hoof horn lifting and infections. Managing lameness issues, such as foot-rot and scald, requires early and appropriate intervention. The longer an infected sheep is left untreated, the greater the severity of the infection, and the greater the likelihood that the disease will have been transmitted to other sheep in the flock. Having good handling facilities will go a long way in helping to keep lameness issues to a minimum on farms. Treating individual sheep out in a field is a very labour-intensive job when on your own, so having good handling facilities will go a long way in making life easier. The first step when treating for lameness is to separate any lame sheep from the rest of the flock. The next step would be to identify the cause of why
the sheep are lame, and treat it accordingly. Antibiotics may be required in cases, such as for foot-rot and contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD), so you will have to talk to your vet about the best course of treatment. Running your flock through a foot-bath regularly will be a big help. Batch footbaths, where the sheep can be left standing in the solution for a period of time, are the most effective. Walkthrough footbaths are of limited use except for the control of scald in lambs. Pairing a sheep’s feet will only make the situation worse, so it should be avoided, while repeat offenders should be culled. There is a vaccine available that will help reduce the incidence of foot-rot, but on its own, it will not eliminate it BEAM: FARMERS REMINDED OF DEFERRAL CLOSING DATE IN JUNE Farmers are being reminded that the closing date by which you can choose to defer your reduction period under the Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) is approaching. BEAM participants have until June 21, to change their reduction period for bovine manure nitrogen to January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. The ordinary reduction period is July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. However, as a result of the Covid-19 impact on some farmers in meeting their 5% nitrates reduction requirement, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) wrote to the European Commission in January 2021 seeking an extension of the reduction period. The department opened the facility to change the reduction period on March 19. The deferral is an option for farmers, and you can still stick with the original reduction period if you are on-course to meet it. Since March 19, some 6,000 BEAM participants have chosen to move their reduction period dates. If a farmer considers they cannot meet the 5% reduction requirement by June 30, 2021, they should opt to defer and choose the later 12-month reduction period of January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. If a BEAM participant chose to defer, but then meets the 5% target within the original reduction period (i.e. by June 30), this time period will then be taken into account. micro-brewery (since 2008). Dick Mack’s Brewhouse is a newer addition, opening in 2017. It, therefore, seems fitting that we begin our food and drink pairing musings by taking beers from the pubs to the dinner table (and beyond).
What Are You Drinking With That? Beyond A Pint – Beer and Food
There are times – that even oenophiles will admit – that only a beer will do. In general, and in association with food-pairing, beers are soothing and not-aggressive, low in acid and, in varying degrees, effervescent. Great qualities when considering matching a beverage with food.
Dingle was named Ireland’s “#1 Foodie Town” in 2014. Seven years on, were a competition for such things, we might just be named the “Bevvies Town” for our vast and growing liquid offerings. From cafés, coffee roasters, juice bars, wine shops, craft brewers, spirits from our own distillery, and the ever-loved cuppa, residents and visitors have a cascade from which to choose their preferred solutions. New to West Kerry Live, “What Are You Drinking With That?” hopes to offer guidance, advice, (and, yes, a bit of opinion) on beverage choices to accompany the foods and celebrations of life in Corca Dhuibhne. Sometimes we’ll start with the food and offer drink, others we’ll work backward. We’ll base our writings on science, but not bog down in the technicalities of pairing. When we sit down with a glass, cup, or mug with our meal, we all want to relax, not study!
A classic pairing of beer with food would include (Irish favourite) Stout/ Porter with oysters. Haven’t tried it – Do! Pilsner style beers go well with salty snacks, sandwiches (hot or cold) sausages and pizza. Ales come in a wide variety of colours and “weights” from golden to dark. Lighter ales match crispy, crunch, salty, fried foods – even bacon & cabbage - while darker ales can stand up to a grilled beefsteak without flinching. Wheat beers have a light sweetness and citrus zip which fit with spicier dishes like curries while their complex cousins the Belgian Lambics can even accompany egg dishes. Dessert and beer? We must be kidding… not at all. Some match surprisingly well. Try an Imperial stout with something chocolate and a fruity or sour Lambic with tarts and cheeses after a meal. Those darkest of beers/ales and their stronger siblings, Barley Wines and Doppelbock, can move from the dessert course to in front of the fire without shifting gears.
As our inaugural choice we’ve gone with a summertime favourite which is more food-friendly than you might think. Beer.
There is more to say about beer and food pairing but only so much space. A quick rule of thumb would be to match the colour of your beer with the shades of your food – from light to dark. Beyond that, don’t be afraid to try something new. Adventure is the spice of life, and many beers and ales can enhance (or cool, when required) the spice.
We are fortunate here on the peninsula to have two craft brewers as our neighbors. Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne at Tig Bhric, is Kerry’s original

Sa chás nach mbeidh tú ábalta an iasacht a aisíoc, bíonn an dualgas ar an ráthóir an iasacht a aisíoc duit. Dá bhrí sin, caithfidh an ráthóir a chruthú dúinn go bhfuil an cumas aisíoctha acu féin agus beidh na doiciméid chuí uatha, mar shampla ráitis bhainc agus duillíní pá, agus iarrfar orthu cead a thabhairt dúinn na seiceálacha cuí creidmheasa a dhéanamh orthu. 4. Aisíocaíochta Solúbtha Is féidir leat socrú a dhéanamh leis an gcomhar creidmheasa na haisíochtaí a chur in oiriúint duit féin. Má shampla, má tá post samhraidh agat, is féidir leat aisíocaíochtaí níos airde a dhéanamh i rith an tsamhraidh, nó má theastaíonn uait an t-iomlán a íoc thar n-ais níos luaithe ná mar a bhí socraithe, is féidir é sin a dhéanamh gan aon phionós. Chomh maith céanna, má bhíonn fadhb agat ag am áirithe aisíocaíocht a dhéanamh, is féidir leat leabhairt leis an bhfoireann chun teacht ar shocrú. 5. Stair Chreidmheasa Ag tosnú amach sa tsaol mar mhac léinn, tá sé tábhachtach stair láidir chreidmheasa a chruthú duit féin, a sheasóidh leat amach anseo is tú ag lorg iasachtaí eile, ar nós morgáiste. Ba cheart duit, agus dod’ ráthóir, a bheith compordach leis an socrú aisíocaíochta. Idir an dá linn, tá súil againn go n-éiríonn le cleas óg Chorca Dhuibhne na spriocanna oideachais atá acu a bhaint amach! Scéim Ghnó / Business Scheme
Bhí garsún óg ann uair amháin darbh ainm Donald. Ní raibh aon Mham ná Daid aige. Bhí sé ag maireachtaint i ndíleachtlann in Albain ach ní raibh sé pioc sásta mar nach raibh éinne ródheas leis. Lá amháin tháinig fear agus bean trial air agus dúradar go dtógfaidís isteach ina dtigh féinigh é. Ar dtúis bhí Donald sásta a dhóthain ach tar éis tamaill d'éirigh an bheirt ana ghránna leis. Bhíodh sé ag sclábhaíocht sa tigh ó mhaidean go hoíche. Bhí siopa mór búistéara ag fear an tí agus chaitheadh sé an t-úrlár a ní na haon lá agus muna mbíodh sé nite i gceart, thugadh sé a chrústáil dó. Bhí an siopa díreach lasmuigh de chathair Ghlaschú agus bhíodh ana chuid custaiméirí ag dul ann. Lá amháin dúirt fear an tí le Donald dul isteach go lár na cathrach chun mála mór feola a thabhairt go dtí custaiméir éigint. Nuair a bhí sé sa chathair chonaic sé póstaer mór ildaite mar gheall ar shorcas agus bhí daoine á lorg acu chun a bheith páirteach ann. Dúirt Donald leis féin 'ná bheadh sé go diail a bheith sa tsorcas, ansan ní chaithfinn a bheith ag ní is ag glanadh na haon áit gach aon lá'. Chuaigh sé chomh fada le tigh an chustaiméara, thug sé an mála feola dó agus chuir sé airgead na feola isteach ina phóca. D'imigh sé leis ansan go dtí an sorcas. Bhain sé triail as an dtraipéis agus bhí muintir an tsorcais ana shásta leis agus dúradar leis go bhféadfadh sé fanacht ina dteannta. Tar éis mí nó dhó bhí aithne mhaith ag Donald ar mhuintir an tsorcais ar fad.
Táimid ar bís a bheith ag obair le roinnt gnóanna an samhradh seo i gCorca Dhuibhne. Tá sé soiléir go bhfuil cíocras ar ghnóanna an Ghaelainn a chur chun cinn ina ngnónanna an samhradh seo, agus biaste turasóireachta mór ós ár gcomhair ó mhuintir na hÉireann. Beidh aistriúchán, comhairle, comharthaí agus Cleachtadh Cainte ar fáil dos na rannpháirithe ar fad.

Back To Education Ireland is reopening, pubs are serving pints, businesses are preparing for a busy summer, we expect the tourists will come, there seems to be work on sites and in the hospitality sector. It's great to see it. So many people have been away from their workplace for almost 18 months. It hasn’t been easy, many have lost their jobs, others have found the way they work has changed totally. People are asking questions about how and where they work and are thinking about the future. The seasonal work will probably dry up in autumn, the tourists will go away and the sites will quiten down. If we've learned one thing in the last few years, it's that learning doesn't stop when we leave school. There are always new courses and new systems to be learned. We're never too old to go back to learning. The lockdown brought thousands of online courses. This suits some people very well. For others the chance to sit in a room and work together with classmates is very important. Finding the course that suits you and the career direction that suits you is an important piece of work. It is essential to get good advice, to research courses, to call centres and ask for information. Free adult guidance counselling is available through The Kerry Education and Training Board. The VTOS programme in Killorglin has run for over 20 years. It offers free full time day classes at QQI level 4. Adults come in for advice and guidance because they're looking to go in a different direction. Many of them have been successful in the education system. They’ve had good careers but they want to change. Some need to upskill, to improve their computer skills. They’re looking for a different pathway. For others it's about creativity or a stepping stone to College. One year on a full time course can set them on their way. Whatever your situation, if you're thinking about making changes in your life you can have free confidential guidance counseling, or if you’re interested in a free full time education course you just need to make a phone call. There's no pressure, there’s no hidden agenda just call 0669762748 Killorglin or contact Kerry Education and Training board. An Daingean 066 915 2361.Tralee 066 714 96 96

Bollán Ghabhláin Thoir Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Séadchomhartha carraige á thabhairt chun solais Bhí ‘lá dár saol’ ar an nGhabhlán i Lios Póil ar an nDomhnach1 agam, agus iontais sheandálaíocha á nochtadh is á léiriú ar lic ár ndoras fhéin don gcéad uair dúinn. Seo mar a tharla. A bhuíochas do Gerry Hannifin ó Oileán an Phucáin ó dhúchas,2 a d’eagraigh go raghadh buíon againn de shiúl na gcos ó Gharraí na dTor suas go Gabhlán Thoir mar a raibh séadchomhartha aimsithe le déanaí aige, agus gur mhaith leis a roinnt le dornán againn. Tá ana-shuim ag Gerry i seandálaíocht a cheantair dhúchais, agus fís nó sprioc aige an saibhreas seo a roinnt is a léiriú le siúlóidí áitiúla a fhorbairt sa dúthaigh de réir a chéile. Bhog cúigear againn chun siúil ó Gharraí na dTor um mheán lae ar an nDomhnach seo chaite – Gerry Hannifin ár dtreorú agus Mícheál Ó Coileáin mar shaineolaí seandálaíochta farainn. Bhí lá go h-aoibhinn, é fionnuar, tirim, le leoithne bhog ag séideadh. Bhuaileas féin bóthar ó Luimneach le moch maidine le bheith i bpáirt sa tsiúlóid, agus sceitimíní orm ar chuma an ghamhna óig a scaoilfí amach den chéad uair san earrach – mo chéad turas ó dheas go Corca Dhuibhne ó Dheireadh Fómhair seo chaite de bharr Covid. Ciorraíonn beirt bóthar, a deirtear – agus ar an mbóthar suas go Gabhlán dúinn, léirigh Gerry a shainthuiscint fhéin ar ghnéithe de thírdhreach seanda na dúichí seo, ina measc, An Bóthar Breac i Lios Póil mar phointe tosaigh le sinsearacht de chosán sléibhe suas cliathán thoir an Stricín agus thar cnoc síos dtín Leitriúch. Ar ár slí thar Dhroichead Ghabhláin dúinn, chuimhníos siar ’dtí m’óige, mar ar thug m’uncail Connie Ó Súilleabháin (1924-2007) ag iascach anso mé trí fichid bliain ó shin. Dh’eachtraigh sé dom, go dtéadh sé féin ag iascach ar an bport céanna ina gharsún dó, a dheirfiúr Caitlín (mo Mham) mar aingeal coimhdeachta aige, agus “safety-pen” aige mar dhuán! Ag amharc ar uiscí na h-abhann lastuas den ndroichead anois dom, cúis mhór-áthais go bhfaca suas le scór breac beag ag snámh go soilbhir sa linn ann, a bhuí le deaDhia na nDúl! Tamall níos sia suas an bóthar agus sinn ag déanamh ar an sliabh, bhí an fhuiseoigín le clos ag portaireacht go binn le h-aer na spéire goirme, agus ceolaire ar chuaille lena dhort rithimiúil, aontonach fhéin aige!
Ó chlé: Gerry Ó hAiniféin, Mícheál Ó Coileáin, Tony Bergen, Risteard Mac Eoin, Marie Uí Ghrífín, John Ó Súilleabháin le Daniel is Jonathan a gharmhic.
Bollán Ghabhláin Thoir Chun mo scéal a chiorrú beagán, cé d’fháiltigh romhainn ag barra an bhóthairín mar a bhfuil an casadh soir go Loch Bearna na Gaoithe ná John ‘Johneen’ Ó Súilleabháin agus a bheirt gharmhac Jonathan agus Daniel. Tá mórán seanchais a bhaineas lena fhód dúchais ag John, idir logainmneacha is trácht ar dhaoine a mhair ann anallód, ina measc, tuairisc ar Mháire Ní Chléirigh a raibh cónaí uirthi i mbothán ar chliathán an chnoic. Bhí de nós ag Máire mála plúir a dh’iompar ar a drom na trí mhíle nó mar sin ó shiopa Chris Hickson ar an nDroichead i Lios Póil an tslí ar fad i gcoinne an aird dtína baile beag fhéin, i dtús dhaichidí na h-aoise seo chaite. Slán mar a n-instear! Gan móran moille, thionlaic John sinn siar tré dhá pháirc shléibhe a mhuintire, dtín láthair ina bhfuil bollán gealrua mar a bheadh toirtís ollmhór sínte ar an dtalamh. Bhailíomar timpeall na cloiche, nach cloch in aon chor í ach bollán carraige atá 7m x 5m x 1m i ndoimhneas (toisí garbha liom fhéin). Le h-iniúchadh pras, nochtadh an t-iontas fé sholas na gréine 26 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
gile dúinn, aghaidh an bholláin breactha le móitífeanna de chopaí is ciorcail, gur chomhraíos suas le dhá cheann déag acu greanta ar dhromcla na carraige. Sampla úr eile d’ailcheard charraige 3 a théann siar 4,000 bliain dtín Ré Neoiliteach Déanach nó an Chré-umhaois Luath, dar le Mícheál Ó Coileáin. Cé chreidfeadh é, súil á leagadh againn ar shéadchomhartha ár muintire romhainn, a bhí ceilte leis na mílte bliain. A bhuíochas do Gerry Hannifin go bhfuil seoid seo ár sínsear nochtaithe inniu dúinn. Le cúpla bliain anuas, tá an dúthaigh seo á chíoradh ag Gerry is é sa tóir ar shéadchomharthaí dá leithéid. Bliain go leith ó shin nó mar sin a leag Gerry súil ar chliathán an bholláin seo den gcéad uair, agus samhlaíodh dó marc suaithinseach a bheith greanta air. D’fhan an scéal mar sin ar feadh tamaill, agus é ag smaoineamh ’feadh an ama ar an ngreanadh. Ansan le déanaí, le barr fiosrachta, bheartaigh Gerry promhadh beag a dhéanamh le cuid den screamh a scú den bhollán. Fód ar fhód do nocht aghaidh na carraige chuige agus fo-mharc á nochtadh de réir a chéile le cuimilt an bhrúscair mhóna dá gnúis, nó go raibh sé ar fad scúite aige – bhí cuid de na fóid mhóna a bhain sé breis is troigh i ndoimhneas. Fágann san, cliathán an bholláin is sia ó thuaidh a bhí fé shíon go leanúnach ar dhath liathdhorcha, is formhór an bholláin a bhí ceilte, ar dhreach geal, mar a chífear sa phictiúr. Móitífeanna Cupa is Ciorcail Ceallamhnach Ghabhláin Aird Níorbh é seo deireadh na n-iontas aige Gerry dúinn, áfach. Síos le fánaigh anois linn go Gabhlán Ard mar a bhfuil ceallamhnach, “le h-ais na dtithe atá so. Níl anois ann ach fáinne cloch agus carn cloch istigh sa bhfáinne. Deir seanchaithe an bhaile gur ann atá máthair Fhinn mhic Chumail curtha,” dar leis an Seabhac.4 Sé’n míniú a thugann an Duinníneach ina fhoclóir ar an bhfocal “ceallamhnach” > a place where unbaptized children are buried 5. Tá leathchiorcail cloch le feiscint ar an láthair go dtí ár linn féin, ach an leath thiar-theas den láthair clúdaithe le sceacha is fásra. Déanfar an láthair a ghlanadh d’Fhéile Lios Póil na bliana so le cóir mheithile idir an dá linn. “Cos an Phréacháin” i bPáirc na nGallán Mar bharr air seo go léir, siar linn cúpla céad méadar go Páirc na nGallán atá ar thalamh Pat Begley – Bríd Ní Shúilleabháin ós na bólaí seo ab ea máthair Phádraig. Iontas eile suite go cluthair i gcúinne thoirthuaidh na páirce romhainn – dhá ghallán 7m óna chéile, agus iad thart ar 3m ar airde. Tá marc suaithinseach ar chliathán an ghallán thiar. Mhínigh Tony Bergen dúinn, gur dtugtar “crow’s foot” nó “sappers” ar an ngreanadh cloiche so. “Cos an Phréacháin” nó “Marc an Rí” atá ag Breandán Ó Cíobháin air. Is “marc airde” nó “bench mark” é a bhaineann le suirbhéireacht Ordanáis ón 19ú haois fé réimeas Shasana. B’é an aidhm a bhí lena leithéid seo de chomhartha, marc buan a dhéanamh den airde ag an suíomh áirithe úd os cionn leibhéal na farraige, agus an líne chothrománach ar a bharra an marc Cos an Phreacháin/Crow’s Foot ceart chuige sin. Pictiúir le Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Clabhsúr Bí ag trácht ar Achaid Chéide nó Ceide Fields Mhaigh Eo. Tá ár n-achaid fhéin i nGabhlán againn, agus fianaise láidir ann ar an gcóras is cianda de ghréasán gort 6 ar domhan ann, agus mórán eile ina theannta, a théann siar breis is 5000 bliain. Más mall, is mithid dúinn a aithint, a chaomhnú, a cheiliúradh is a chraobhscaoileadh. 1 An Domhnach, 6 Meitheamh 2021.
2 Tá cónaí ar Gerry lena chlann i gCathair Uí Mhóráin. 3 Breandán Ó Cíobháin a cheap is a roinn an sainthéarma so ar ”rock-art” orm > ail - a stone, a rock, a boulder, dar leis an nDuinníneach. 4 Féach Ó Siochfradha, P., Triocha-Céad Chorca Dhuibhne (BÁC 1939) 163. ⁵ Ua Duinnín, P., Foclóir Gaedhilge Béarla (BÁC 1927) 174. ⁶ Breandán Ó Cíobháin, bail air, a chum is a roinn an sainthéarma ar “field boundaries” orm, chomh maith. ⁷ Do mhionchur síos den scoth ar sheandálaíochta na dúthaí seo, féach, Cuppage, J., Suirbhé Seandálaíochta Chorca Dhuibhne (Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne 1986) 27-8. Saol Peile Pháidí Uí Shé le Seán Ó Catháin Níl aon dabht ach gurbh Páidí Edbhard Ó Sé ó Ard a’ Bhothair laoch na peile i bParóiste Fionntrá ins na 80aí. Saolaíodh Páidí ar an 15ú Bealtaine 1955 do Tommy Ó Sé ó Chathair a’ Treantaigh agus Beatrice Lavin ó Chontae Shligigh. Duine de thriúr clainne - Michael (R.I.P) agus Tom na deartháireacha agus imreoirí caide cumasacha, Tom ag buachtaint bonn uile Éirinn le mionúirí Chiarraí i 1963. D’fhreastal Páidí ar bhunscoil Chaitlín Noafa, Cillmhicadomhnaigh, Scoil na mBráthar sa Daingean ar feadh bliana, Coláiste Bhréanainn, Cill Áirne agus ag críochnú suas i gColáiste Mhichíl, Lios Tuathail. Chaith sé seal sa Gharda Síochána i Luimneach sar a thóg sé Tigh Kruger i nDún Chaoin ar cíos i 1979. Ba é mhian a chroí i gcónaí a thigh tabhairne féin a bheith aige, rud a bhain sé amach i mí Iúil 1985 nuair a d’oscail a chara Cathal Ó hEocha an pub i ngarraí Pheaitsín in Ard a’ Bhothair. 1980 Thosnaigh na 80aí amach sa chraobh le cluiche ag Ciarraí i gcoinne Chorcaí sa Munster Final – an taon chluiche a bhí acu i gCúige Mumhan i 1980, cluiche a bhuadar 3-13 go 0-12, ansan cluiche leath cheannais v Uibh Fháilí – bua 4-15 le 4-10 agus ansan i gcoinne Ros Comáin sa chraobh 1-9 le 1-6. B’shin an cluiche gur dhein Páidí an sábháil iontach ar chic ó Aidan Dooley. Meastar dá mbeadh cúl faighte ag Ros Comáin, gur acu a bheadh an bua. 1981 Ag dul ar aghaidh go 1981 i gcoinne An Clár 4-17 le 0-6, Corcaigh 1-11 le 0-3, Maigh Eo 2-19 le 1-16 agus an cluiche ceannais i gcoinne Uíbh Fháilí 1-12 le 0-8. Is ins na leath-cúil ar dheis a d’imir Páidí sna cluichí seo ar fad agus ag tabhairt ruathar nó dhó suas na páirce chun pointe nó dhó a scóráil. 1982 Tugann san ar aghaidh sinn go an bhliain iomráiteach 1982 nuair a bhí Ciarraí ag tabhairt faoin five-in-a-row. Thosnaíodar amach ag buachtaint ar an gClár 1-15 le 0-9 ar dtús agus ansan i gcoinne Chorcaí 2-18 le 0-12. Bhuadar ar Ard Mhacha sa chluiche leath-cheannais 3-15 le 1-11 agus ansan an tubaist nuair a bhuaigh Uíbh Fháilí orthu 1-15 le 0-17. Scóráil Paidí dhá phointe an lá sin agus é ag imirt sna leath-cúíl. 1983 Dhá chluiche craoibhe. v Tiobraid Árann 5-16 le 2-5 agus cluiche ceannais na Mumhan a bhuaigh Corcaigh 3-10 le 3-09 le cúl déanach ó Thaidhg Óg Murphy. 1984 Bliain stairiúil do C.L.G agus iad ag ceiliúradh céad bliain ar an bhfód. Faoin dtráth seo cheap Mick O’ Dwyer go raibh cuid dá luas caillte ag Páidí, mar sin is sa line lán-cúl ag uimhir 2 a bhí sé. Bhuaigh Ciarraí an sraith náisiúnta i mí Aibreán ag buachtaint ar an nGaillimh i Luimneach 1-11 le 0-11. B’shin an lá ar thug Páidí sunc do Joe McNally roimis an cluiche. An bhliain céanna bhuaigh Ciarraí Thiar craobh an chontae don gcéad uair ag buachtaint ar Chiarraí Theas sa final agus b’é Páidí an traenálaí. Bhuaigh Lios Póil 28 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
craobh Chiarraí Thiar agus d’ainmníodar Páidí mar chaptaen ar fhoireann Chiarraí do 1985. Bhuaigh Ciarraí Corn an Chéid – Ford Cup – in earrach na bliana mar sin b’é an chéad corn á ghlacadh ag Pio. 1985 Cúig chluiche a bhí acu sa chraobh i 1985, ag buachtaint go bog ar Luimneach agus Corcaigh i gCúige Mumhan, Muineachán sa semi-final tar éis ath-imirt, cluiche ina ainmníodh Páidí mar laoch na himeartha agus ansan an cluiche ceannais le bua ar Áth Cliath 2-12 le 2-08. Ba lúcháireach an lá do mhuintir paróiste Fionn Trá 22ú Meán Fomhair 1985 nuair a d’ardaigh Páidí Corn Mac Guidir agus thug sé an óráid iontach ar fad as Gaelainn. Bhí tinte cnámh ar lasadh agus na sluaite bailithe in Ard a’Bhothair nuair a tugadh an corn ann oíche Dé Luain gan trácht ar an ríméad agus sceitimíní áthais ar leanaí scoile i Scoil Chaitlín Naofa, Cillmhicadomhnaigh nuair a landáil an corn ann maidin Dé Máirt. 1986 Ghnóthaigh Páidí a ochtú bonn sinsir i 1986 – buachtaint ar Thiobraid Árann, Corcaigh, An Mhí agus Tír Eoghain sa final. D’éirigh le Ciarraí Thiar a ngreim a choimeád ar an gcroabh i gCiarraí don dara bhliain as a chéile. 1987 Bhí an deireadh ag teacht. 3 chluiche - Port Láirge agus dhá chluiche le Corcaigh - bua acu san ath-imirt. 1988 Cluiche craoibhe amháin a d’imir Páidí i 1988 i gcoinne Port Láirge. Don Munster Final d’fhág Dwyer i measc na bhfear ionad é. Ghoill san go mór ar Pháidí ag an am ach ina dhiaidh sin thuig sé go raibh an ceart ag an mbainisteoir. 1989 Thraenáil sé go dian i dtús 1989 agus bhí an cuma air go raibh seans maith go mbeadh sé ar ais ar fhoireann Chiarraí go dtí gur tharla droch ghortú i gCluiche Ceannais Sraith Chiarraí Thiar i gcoinne Lios Póil. D’imir sé cluiche amháin leis an nGaeltacht i Sraith an Chontae agus b’shin deireadh lena imirt. Faoin dtráth seo san 80aí bhí tús curtha aige lena obair mar thraenálaí – bhí Bord na nÓg na Gaeltachta díreach ar an bhfód agus bhí Páidí ag plé leis an bhfoireann fé 12. Bhí tús curtha lena ré bainistíochta agus tabharfar sracfhéachaint ar sin amach anseo. Seo cuir síos gairid ar shaol peile Pháidí Uí Shé: Cluichí Craoibhe: 53 Cluichí Sraithe: 83 Cluiche Mionúir: 6 Scóranna: 0-8 sa chraobh, 0-18 sa sraith agus 1-11 sna mionúir All-Stars: 5 (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985) Cluichí Ceannais D’imir

Fé mar a dúirt Maidhc Dainín amhrán - “A Pháidí Uí Shé is tú ár laoch.” Phós Páidí Máire Ní Fhathaigh ó Bhaile an Fheirtéaraigh agus bhí triúr mhuirir orthu – Neasa, Siún agus Pádraig. Shleamhnaigh Páidí uainn chun na síoraíochta maidin Dé Sathairn 12ú Nollaig 2012. Ta sé ina luí faoin bhfód i reilig Chaitlíona thíos cois na trá. Bhí sochraid Pháidí ar cheann dos na sochraidí ba mhó a bhí riamh sa pharóiste. Tá dealbh an-bhreá le feiscitn de Pháidí le feiscint in Ard a’ Bhothair agus b’é Mich O’ Dwyer a dhein an nochtadh ar an 15ú Bealtaine 2015 – lá go mbeadh Páidí trí scór bliain.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland The very best of luck to everyone who has re-opened their doors for the season at last – particularly to the pubs who have been closed for such a long time…… and while relief must be enormous to re-open doors, there is most probably, a degree of nervousness, managing social distancing safety practices, training for staff with new procedures, and ensuring that safety is key for customers. Dingle Notes Richie Williams BUSINESS. The Business Chamber welcome back all the outlets in the Peninsula who are opening their doors following the recent easing of covid restrictions. The fine weather during the June Bank Holiday Weekend offered the opportunity for people of all ages to get out and about resulting in a great influx of visitors to Corca Dhuibhne. The Chamber also welcome another new business outlet to Green Street. Dick Mack's Bottle Library opened its doors last week specialising in a wonderful selection of fine wines, cigars and of course whiskey for which the establishment has won many awards. The new outlet adds another dimension to the world famous licenced premises and brewery business set up in the adjoining buildings a short while ago. Chef and successful author Trevis Gleeson heads up the staff and no better person to offer advice to customers in the finer matters of proper selections for wining and dining successfully. Good Luck Finn, Ronnie and the crew there!. Lets hope that the unruly scenes in other locations at the weekend will not delay the full opening of all licenced premises and restaurants within the next few weeks. TOWN DEVELOPMENTS. Congratulations to the management and staff of Kerry County Council on the really modern finish to the development works in Strand Street. And that was followed up by an almost round the clock collection of rubbish which resulted from thie Governments promotion of OUTSIDE DINING in line with Covid restrictions. Well done to all concerned. Further developments in the Strand Street area incorporating the former Boatyard and Ice Plant site should be in place for summer 2022 if funding applications are successful at national level. SPORT. Most clubs in the Peninsula have now returned to full activities including competitions and are appealing for support from parents and the general public. Some terms and conditions apply so please contact your club officers on which conditions need to be completed before attending various fixtures. Good Luck to both the male and female players on various Kerry Teams who take to the playing fields around the country over the next few months. The return to active competitive sport on the national radio and television medias has provided very welcome relief to so many people right around the country. This has really been highlighted to me in conversation with both young and older people over the past few weeks. TIDY TOWNS. Work evenings will recommence on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m.. Social distancing regulations will apply so work will be in various locations for this year. We wish to say a big thank you to the people who turned up and helped out with the recent KWD COUNTY CLEANUP weekends. Over 20 bags of litter were collected off the approach roads to our town but due to the lack of volunteers it was not possible to cover all areas to a 5km distance as planned. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Deception and Lies le
David Burke foilsithe ag
Mercier ‘In May of 1970, two government ministers were dismissed from Cabinet for allegedly purchasing guns for the IRA. The Taoiseach Jack Lynch disavowed any knowledge of the plot. Few believed him. Charles Haughey, Minister for Finance, a captain in Irish military intelligence along with two others were put on trial. All were acquitted. Haughey refused to talk about the crisis for the rest of his life. Fianna Fail endured decades of splits, turmoil and leadership heaves. Until now, no one has revealed the pivotal role of an IRA informer in the affair. The part he played became the best-kept State secret of the last half-century. The book also reveals a dirty tricks campaign by Britain’s Foreign Office to conceal the ancillary role of a British agent called Capt. MarkhamRandall in the murder of Garda Richard Fallon on the eve of the eruption of the Arms Crisis.’ - Mercier An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Is docha go bhfuil fonn agus fuadar ar fhurmhór mhuintir Chiarraí go mór mhór laetheannta breá Bealtaine agus taispeáintis caide. Beidh Ciarraí ar a dtriail ar an nDomhnach beag seo in aghaidh Thír Eoghain. Is mó uair an bhearna bainte acu dúinn: anois an t-am le ceacht a mhúineadh dóibh. Tá lucháir orainn ar fad go bhfuil an mianach ceart inár imreoirí caide, iománaithe leasmhara agus mná ceolmhara na caide agus na camógaíochta.
acu Micheál (Micks) Mac Gearailt ó Bhaile an Rannaig, a thagadh an treo seo go minic, agus a bhaineadh súp as an gcomhluadar agus an fuadar go léir cois trá sa tsamhraidh. Thart ar ceithre bliain ó shin a cailleadh é siúd, agus ocht bliana ó shoin a dheirfiúr Máire, go raibh saol fada aici i Sasana sarar fhill sí ar Bhaile an Rannaigh. Ar dheis Dé go rabhdar beirt. Seo dán beag a rinne mé i gcuimhne Mhicks: Mícheál ar Lár A Mhichíl ‘c Gearailt anois fágaimíd agat slán, Ba diail í do chuimhne pé acu dubh í nó bán, Mar thugais leat scéalta agus mór eachtraithe go slán.
Seo cúpla raiteas, focla, gur ceart claoi leo i gcúrsaí caide: Seans go mbeadh cuid acu seo áisiúil.
Agus chuiris mearthall is scaipeadh ar ruagairí an láin.
Ag teacht amach- ag dul isteach. Ag teacht anuas, ag dul suas.
Ar chur isteach ghaolta ní raibh do leithéid le fáil,
An chaid caillte aige. Bainte dhó.
Réiteófá ceisteanna gaoil ón gCuas dtí Fán,
Bhuail sé isteach an chaid. Ghreamaigh [pé duine] í go healaíonta.
Ach mar bharr ar t-eolas d’ainmneófá an t-ál,
Buaileann tú an chaid amach/suas fén ngort go dtí lár an ghoirt nó, na páirce.
Agus d’fhágfá lucht magaidh ina ngamaill ar fán.
Caid árd Lá Gaoithe- ráite go mór mhór nuair a bheadh ceann breá curtha amú nó chómh cam le adhairc reatha agat. Ach is ciallmhar an beartas é má tá an éirim caide, thapaidh i nduine agus an ghaoth laistiar dhó, go seolfadh sé an chaid dtí duine dá fhoireann.
Bhí ceol i do chosa, ríncfeá gan cháim, Is thabharfá an t-am leat mar eolaí ar chlár; Raghfá ag iascach i naomhóig nó i mbád,
Fan leis - ná scaoil tharat é. Mura mbeidh an ghabháil agat úsaid an dorn.
Agus thabharfá coitianta leat maicréil id ghabháil.
Gaibh cruinn díreach isteach. Scaoil leis an gcaid go tapaidh. Fan bonn ar bhonn leis. Ná buail treasna do bháide. Seachain cic/lasca poc gearr amach!
Bhailíteá tréada caorach agus bulláin má ghá, Agus ní raibh ort riamh leisce, tormas ná crácht;
Báideoir, buail amach an chaid, dtí an nduine ceart.
Ach go cos éadrom ón shliabh dtí ‘an mbán,
Buail amach an chaid chomh fada is a fhéadfair, ach i dtreo duine don bhfoireann. Caid íseal i gcoinne na gaoithe. Má ta neart agus coisíocht ionat bain úsáid as ach ná fan go nbeidh duine sa mhullach ort.
Agus tú chomh sásta is bheadh bruic-leachán. Sea, anois tá an t-am caite a Ghearaltaigh áidh
Scaip í. Bíodh súil an tseabhaic agat ar d’fhear[bean]. Ná buail siar[laistiar dhuit] an chaid. Más romhat atá sé úsáid an dorn.
Ní raibh sás ama agam led lán-cháil chur ar phár Olaimíd do shláinte le faobhar gan slaghdán,
Ná scaoil led mhaidí is cuma cé chomh mór chun cinn atátar. Guala láidir san am cheart. Tá an- theacht aniar ionta siúd, Ná bí ag sá sa drom. Ar do bhás ná téadh sé tharat – ná laistigh duit. Ná bí ag stracadh as a gheansaí - Má tá an réiteoir in aice leat. Tabhair péac nó dhó má tá sé mallaithe. Seo cupla focal ar mhaithe le cruinneas Gaoluinne Chuaigh sé suas - thainig sé anuas. Chuaigh sé[sí] síos, agus thainig sé[sí] aníos. Chuaigh sé sall, tháinig sé anall. Ghaibh sé soir, tháinig sé anoir. Bhí sé istigh, tháinig sé amach. Tháinig sé anall chugam, chuas sall chuige. Tháinigh sé aníos chugam chuas síos chuige Ard-teist: Guím gach rath ar na scoláirí go léir ón ndúthaigh atá ag dul fé scrúdú na hArdteiste. Tá cúig mhí déag crua curtha isteach agaibh, ó thús na paindéime. Tá súil agam mar sin féin go dtiocfaidh ‘aimsir na hArdteiste’ dtín gcuid eile againn an fhaid is tá sibh ag dian-staidéar – níl aon radharc ar sin agus mé á scríobh seo, ach ceo agus fliuchán. Cuimhnímís siar Is mó gaiscíoch atá imithe ar lár sa deich bliain atá caite. Beirt acu san Mícheál Mac Gearailt ó Leataoibh a cailleadh cúig bliana ó shoin tráth an ama seo, agus a bhean lách Eibhlín a d’imigh tamaillín roimis – dhóigh leat gur inné a d’éalaigh siad uainn. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh acu araon. Duine eile
