Condolences: Our most sincere sympathies are with Josephine and Brendan Twiss and their ex-tended families on the passing of Josephine's father James O’Shea who was laid to rest earlier this week. Both Josephine (Registrar) and Brendan (Chairperson) are former members of the Milltown Castlemaine Executive and every one at the club would like to convey their condolences at this sad time to both them and their family.

Our junior side then finished off the week with a hard fought draw in division 6B of the county league away to Kenmare Shamrocks. An impressive 17 points equalled the 3-08 of the home side.

Coiste na nÓg: Sponsored by Foleys Spar, Milltown The week started off with a great win for our U13 White Team against Killarney Le-gion at home. The White Team had been playing some fantastic football of late, it was greta to see this good form rewarded with a win in last Monday nights county league fixture. The final score Milltown/Castlemaine GAA 5-14 v 5-06 Legion. On Wednesday evening the action was once again at Paddy Burke Memorial Park as our U15 Green side faced Spa in the Lee Strand County League. There was some fantastic scoring that led to a tally of 4-20 for our home side getting the win over by a score of 4-20 to 3-06 but what also shone on the night were the defensive players. The cheers for the numerous interceptions and in particular the turnovers of possession were as loud as the scores at the other end. Well done to all the players on a great performance. Moving on to Thursday evening and our club took over 30 U11 players to play three separate games against Austin Stacks in Connolly Park, Tralee. Our U11 team played some amazing football with great skill and heart across all three games on the evening. The amazing entertainment continued into the weekend with Friday evening seeing our U13 White Team (for their 2nd game of the week) travel to Kenmare. Trailing at the the last water break our team scored 8 points between then and the end of the game to grab a great draw after an outstanding comeback. Finally with the senior B side travelling to Kenmare the Shamrocks U9 team came in the other direction to face our Milltown/Castlemaine U9s this Sunday morning. Kenmare showed some good defensive displays but our U9s attacking skill was a good match for it. Equally our U9s shone in defensive areas. The Sunday footballing action wasn’t finished just yet as our U13 Green side hosted Dromid/Waterville in the Lee Strand County League. Our U13 side who have played some fantastic football over the past few weeks did so again this evening as they got a great win in this penultimate game of the county league phase one. The players showed great skill and maturity beyonds there years along the way to a 5-07 to 1-04 win. A sincere thank you to all of the parents who have kept us up to date on all of our Coiste na nÓg teams fantastic performances. Senior Team:Sponsored by Almas Takeaway & Bathrooms 4U Senior: Our senior side faced Currow in the county league on Saturday evening gone and once again played some measured and effective attacking football. This coupled with a good defensive display led to a 2-11 to 0-10 win. The next game up is Brosna away in two weeks time in Division 3B of this years County League. Junior: The Junior side started the week with a Mid Kerry League outing against An Gaeltacht at home in which the visiting team lead by a solitary point at half time but a strong second half showing from our junior side 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Minor: Our visiting team went into an early lead against South Kerry side Renard/St Marys in the first round of the Central Region last Monday, raising the green flag twice before the first water break and got another goal before half time. The goals were the difference at the halfway mark our U17s leading 3-09 to 0-9 in Caherciveen. Having not being beaten yet this year our minors were keen to keep going strong and despite a second half goal for Renard/St Mary’s our Milltown/ Castlemaine team kept picking off their scores to keep distance between them and their opponents. The final score: Milltown Castlemaine U17 3-18 V 1-11 Renard/St Mary’s

Don’t Get Let-Down on Holidays by the Let-Down Effect Irene Ní Fhlannúra

A new term making the headlines recently is the “Let-Down effect” also known as the Let-Down syndrome. This newly labelled condition describes how our bodies succumb to illness the moment we take time off, the moment we let down our hair, so to speak. How many times have your heard of, or even experienced yourself, arriving at your holiday destination only to spend the first few days in the bed – sick, in pain and extremely fatigued? It is a thing and even though I have only recently learned its official name – post-stress illness has been a thing for quite some time. The classification and recognition of this pattern in medicine is new, not the condition itself explains psychologist Marc Schoen, clinical professor of medicine in UCLA. His investigations examines “people who come down with an illness or develop flare-ups of chronic conditions not during a concentrated period of stress but after it dissipates”. With vacation season officially open, and people taking a well-earned break from what has been an extraordinary stressful period, it is not too late to learn how your food and lifestyle in the run up to your holiday can prevent this kind of let down. The Let-Down effect is most associated with conditions such as upper respiratory infections, flu, migraine, headaches, dermatitis, arthritis pain and depression within a few days of being on vacation. People living with chronic inflammatory and/or autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia, asthma, Crohn’s Disease and Lupus have also seen increase in flare-ups while away on holidays. Prof. Marc Schoen and his team pinpointed that the Let Down effect is triggered in the first three days of your holiday, yet many symptoms can linger depending on your own vulnerabilities and risk factors. During acute stress, the body releases key hormones – including glucocorticoids (like cortisol), catecholamines (like norepinephrine) and adrenaline – to prepare itself to fight or flee from danger and to trigger the immune system to step up certain types of surveillance for the threat of attack. In the process, glucocorticoids can reactivate dormant viral infections such as herpes simplex 1 (which causes cold sores) and Epstein-Barr virus (which can trigger fatigue, fever, sore throat and swollen glands), for which symptoms are only obvious after a few days. This explains some of those post-stress symptoms. The hormones which mobilize your immune system against illness during stressful times are down-regulated once the stressful period ends - your immune system pulls back its troops, and the body becomes less vigilant in weeding out invaders, leaving you more vulnerable to a viral or bacterial attack in those first few days. At the same time, says Schoen, a reservoir of body chemicals called prostaglandins, left over from the stress response, tends to produce inflammation, and can trigger problems like arthritic pain, migraines and inflammatory skin conditions. Likewise, an increase in inflammation can exacerbate autoimmune conditions, as can our own response to being in unfamiliar surroundings.

Interestingly, most of the recommendations from these studies require slowing the pace leading up to a holiday and building in some strategies to wind down slowly in those first few days of your holiday. These include some tried and trusted stress-management techniques – yoga, meditation, breathing techniques and improving sleep. But when you just have a few days to prepare, the best thing to do is concentrate on breath – breathing in such a way that you tune into it, slow it down and be aware of your inhale/exhale flow. Schoen also recommends that instead of going from 100 to 0, in terms of stress, to wind down in increments in the days prior to your holiday – 100, 80, 60, 40….. lessening the demands as you approach your holiday. He goes on to say that in those first few days of your holiday, instead of hitting zero all of a sudden, to include some moderate stress-inducing exercises (hill walking, jogging, paddle-boarding) and mental exercises with time limits (to induce a little stress) such as time-restricted sudoku, crosswords and word-game at the beginning of your break. Studies have shown that those who wind down slowly and include a little “controlled stress” in the first few days of holidays as described above fare out much better than those who go from high-doh to zero on the way to their destination. From a nutritional point of view you can mitigate much of the risk of “LetDown Effect” by ensuring that you are having regular mealtimes in the week before you go on holiday. This means three square meals, evenly spaced out with a couple of snacks in between. Steady, even paced eating will ensure that you are tuning into a reassuring pattern, which ultimately sends signals to the body that “all is well, relax”. Preparing for holidays is often a high-stress time, making sure all the jobs are done, clothes are laundered for the suitcases and the family pet is cared for, not to mind those last few work-related tasks that must be finished off. Exercise, time outdoors, home-cooked meals and good sleep are often sacrificed in the last few days leading up to a holiday, which increases the stress response, leading to a sharp downfall once all is done. Factor this in your pre-holiday schedule, making sure that you have the shopping done for that last week, time scheduled for exercise and getting outdoors and get to bed before 11am this time of year – so that you wind down slowly in the run up to your break. Support the stress response by eating foods rich in vitamin B5 (yogurt, eggs, legumes, lentils mushrooms, avocado, broccoli, sweet potatoes, corn, cauliflower, kale, and tomatoes). The foods that can influence your prostaglandin reservoirs to induce an anti-inflammatory response include avocado, sardines, tuna, walnut, pumpkin seeds, olives and olive oil – lessening pro-inflammatory responses by the post-stress debris. Supplementing with omega 3, B vitamin- complex and Vitamin C can also be a useful part of our holiday plan. Rest assured, that while there are lots of factors involved in the post-stress response, some common sense, good food and sleep before your holiday will ensure that it will be the well-earned break you deserve. Happy Holidays to all our visitors, bain súp as! Danno was beyond generous with the time and energy he gave to the community he was so central to. His larger than life presence will be sorely missed around Dingle and beyond.

For one thing, the Saint Patrick's Day Parade won't be the same without it's incomparable compere with his mischievous irreverence and infectious good humour. Whether he was hosting fundraising quizzes or keeping order at the Christmas Day swim, he did it all in his own unique way. His love for West Kerry was obvious and his passion for rugby undying, no surprise then that he was the driving force behind the formation of a local club. The sport he loved in the place he loved.

Farming News Louis Murchan AFRICA AGRI-FOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney T.D. along with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine jointly announced a call for applications to the Africa Agri-Food Development Programme (AADP). The AADP is a collaboration between the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, Food and the Marine, under which Irish agri-food companies are eligible for matching funding of up to €250,000 to develop commercial projects in Africa which are of benefit to local communities. The AADP also supports feasibility studies. The AADP provides support to Irish Companies operating in or interested in establishing partnerships with African Companies in 18 sub-Saharan African countries: Botswana, Cóte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Namibia, Nigeria, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Finance for the Africa Agri-Food Development Programme will be drawn from existing overseas development aid budgets in the Departments of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Foreign Affairs (Irish Aid). The report of the National Task Team Rural Africa (available here) sets out a new framework to enhance, and improve the coordination of Ireland’s existing contribution to the transformation of Africa’s agriculture and rural economy by harnessing the respective expertise of Government Departments, State Agencies, the private sector, civil society, academia and the African Diaspora. Applications for AADP support must be submitted online. Details on the programme can be accessed at: https://www.dfa.ie/our-role-policies/international-priorities/africa/AADP/ The closing date for receipt of applications is 30 July 2021. REAP - WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: REAL OR NOT! Considering that less than half the applicants that applied for REAP were accepted, and that as high as 80% of those accepted into the scheme declined the offer to sign up, what impact will REAP have on Water Quality. Truth be told, it is unlikely that is will have any impact what so ever. Many farmers didn’t know what was involved in the scheme from the outset, and many advisors didn’t have time to explain the “in’s & out’s” to their clients, as the closing date deadline was 10th May. This being just seven days before the BPS deadline, advisors were at full speed trying to ensure that everyone made their annual submission for Direct Payments. This resulted in a fudged scheme launch where no terms and conditions were generally available, and very few knew what was involved in the scheme. This has resulted in the 50%+ being excluded and a considerable proportion of those accepted, actually rejecting the offer. And those vacancies being created in the scheme-list will not be filled or replaced by any of those not accepted in the first place. Many farmers were disappointed, if not furious, and appeals were submitted on their behalf. However, their appeals were mainly rejected based on Terms & Conditions that were not available at the time of application. Some farmers with SAC/SPA/High Water Quality Streams/Commonage were refused while others with none of the above were accepted. Many farmers who were accepted into the scheme will be rewarded for protecting the watercourse that flows through their farm. Their neighbours will not only not be rewarded, but will be penalised if anything goes wrong. Water quality is just one of four environmental considerations of REAP, along with biodiversity, soil health and climate mitigation. But it is an important one. The vast majority of farmers are careful when using chemicals, and they are now mostly applied/sprayed by contractors or professional specialist sprayer-operators. The main spray type applied is MCPA which is used to control rush and broadleaf weed growth. If they wanted to promote water quality, why didn’t they offer an option to use mechanical or traditional weed control methods. But any suggestion that MCPA use is rampant in the South West, etc is unfounded and inaccurate. If they want to improve water quality, the scheme has to be inclusive of all farmers who own land along protected of endangered watercourses, and not just the select few. It has to be all. One farmer will be restricted from using herbicides while his neighbour will not. One will have low fertilizer allowances imposed on 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

his farm, while hies neighbours will not. What will happen is that those in REAP will be rewarded for doing what their neighbours will be penalised for if they don’t. This is more like the Just Society in Port St John in 1982 that equality within the Irish farming community in 2021. It Just doesn’t make sense. And the end result is that Water quality will not improve, and we will be no better off, and some will gain, while others will not. HOW THE NEW CAP WILL AFFECT US? Since the recent agreement of the new CAP, the details are slowly emerging. One particular aspect of the agreement carries huge importance in terms of how farmers will be paid when the new policy comes into effect in 2023 – namely eco-schemes. Eco-schemes will be a new feature of CAP. These schemes are mandatory for member states to introduce but voluntary for farmers to take part in. However, the eco-schemes are funded through Pillar I, meaning they will comprise a proportion of the budget for direct payments. As has already been reported, the deal will require member states to ringfence 25% of their direct payments budget for eco-schemes. This 25% figure applies across the whole period of the new CAP – 2023 to 2027. For eco-schemes, a ‘learning period’ will be in place for the first two years – 2023 and 2024. During this period, there will be a ‘floor’, whereby member states will be required to allocate at least 20% of their direct payments budget to eco-schemes. During the learning period, ringfenced funding for eco-schemes that are not paid out (for example, in the case of a low-uptake of the schemes by farmers), can be partially or wholly reallocated to other areas of CAP. In 2023 and 2024, member states will be allowed re-allocate up to one-fifth of unused eco-scheme funds per year (up to 5% of the annual national direct payments budget, and 10% of the combined 2023 and 2024 direct payments budget). However, any unused funds below the 20% floor in the learning period will have to be compensated for by the end of the CAP in 2027. This can be done by one of the following three “compensation mechanisms”: compensation in Pillar I (direct payments) by directing an increased amount of funds to eco-schemes; compensation in Pillar II (rural development) by transferring funds over from Pillar I for environmental and climate interventions under the second pillar; or through an outright loss of those funds not used during the learning period. It’s going to be important that eco-schemes are structured so as to be accessible for farmers. Farmers need to be able to join and participate in these schemes, and they are not to just for a certain type of region or enterprise, but for all WORKPLACE DEATHS ROSE 13% LAST YEAR. New figures from the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) show that the number of people who died in work-related incidents last year rose 13% to 53, despite many workplaces being closed for long spells due to Covid-19 restrictions. Many of these accidents took place on our farms, so we are all being asked to take even more care. Farming is mainly a solo business, and so the likelihood of an accident happening where help cannot be accessed is even greater that in other circumstances. There was also a substantial decline in the number of non-fatal incidents reported to the authority, a reduction it attributes to the impact of the Covid-19 public health measures. The number of fatal incidents was the highest since 2015 when 56 people lost their lives. More than half of those who died last year were self-employed with 18 of those working in agriculture, forestry and fishing, seven in construction, two in wholesale and retail trade and one in accommodation and food service. A further 12 of those who lost their lives were employees and 13 were non-workers. Overall, the largest number of work-related fatalities occurred in agriculture, forestry and fishing. The most common triggers associated with work-related fatalities were loss of control of means of transport which led to 30% of the deaths, fall from height which was associated with 13% of deaths and fall of an object from above or the victim entering a dangerous area, both of which precipitated 11% of deaths. Eighteen, or a third of all the deaths involved people over the age of 65, continuing an increasing trend of older victims that began in 1990. Five were aged under 18 years, and 11 were aged between 45 and 54 years. Of the 13 non-workers to die in work-related fatalities in 2020, five were aged under 18 years old. This drives home the need for appropriate

procedures to be put in place to protect everyone in a workplace, be they employees, customers or visitors. 7,417 non-fatal incidents were reported to the authority over the 12 months, down 21% on the 9,358 recorded in 2019. Reductions were recorded in every economic sector except agriculture, forestry and fishing which accounted for 23.3% of incidents. 94% of the non-fatal incidents involved employees. Last year 5,416 onsite Covid-19 inspections were carried out between 18 May and 31 December to check for compliance with the Government's Work Safely Protocol. The HSA found a 92% compliance rate with the requirement to have control measures in place, but just 78% adherence to the need to have a response plan prepared. The site visits took place across a wide range of sectors, including the HSA’s priority sectors of healthcare and construction, with inspections also taking place in high-risk sectors such as manufacturing, retail and wholesale, based on public health advice. 1,457 complaints were received in the course of the year in relation to Covid-19 Return to Work and Work Safely Protocols.

Overall, the HSA carried out 9,135 inspections last year, and completed 1,160 investigations. In 65% of cases where inspections and investigations took place, enforcement was also taken. A total of 13 successful prosecutions were made and fines of €1.327m were imposed. More people are now aware of the importance of health and safety in the workplace. But health and safety must continue to be a top priority - as it can and will save lives," said Dr McGuinness. Proper risk assessments and health and safety considerations must be implemented in all workplaces to ensure everyone’s safety. No job is worth a loss of life, injury or illness. The HSA’s Workplace Contact Unit handled 28,684 contacts in 2020, 39% more than in 2019, with over a third being requests for information in relation to Covid-19. The HSA said more than 52,000 online and safety courses were taken last year while large increases were also recorded in users of the BeSmart and FarmSafely programmes - the highest level on record and up from 60% in 2019. pinch of salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract 40g flour Method Preheat the oven to 190ºC Brush the cheesecake tin with the melted butter, line the tin with two sheets of parchment. Make sure the parchment comes well above the top of the tin. Add the cream cheese and caster sugar to bowl of a mixer, use a paddle attachment. Mix this at medium speed for 3-4 minutes. Scape down the sides of the mixer, turn the mixer on again to medium speed. Add the eggs one at a time and let it mix for a few seconds before adding the next. Add the cream, salt, vanilla. Mix this for another 30 seconds. Turn off the mixer and fold in the flour. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Place the tin on a tray and put this on the middle shelf of the oven. Bake this for about 55-60 minutes. The top should have a golden-brown colour and the centre should have a slight wobble. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. The centre will fall as it cools. Once the cake has cooled completely, place it in the fridge overnight. Remove from the fridge for about 1 hour before serving.

What Are You Drinking With That? Rosé for Food

“Rosés can be served with anything” – Julia Child What was previously predominantly referred to as ‘pink’ wine, Rosé has seen a huge revival in recent years, with a new appreciation for all that these beautiful wines have to offer. Rosé is an extremely versatile wine, ranging from a refreshing aperitif on a summer’s day to the perfect pairing with dinner, and it can range from dry and crisp to fruity and sweet. Rosé has an interesting position between red and white wine – a dry rosé will have the crisp, refreshing characteristics of a lighter style white wine, while it can have a bigger body and punch of flavours similar to a red wine if it’s left to sit on the grape skins for an extended period. This combination means it can stand up to several different foods and offer an interesting pairing for many meals. In this week’s column, we’re going to explore the different food pairing options for rosé wine, for you to test out at your next meal. The only problem when discussing food pairings for rosé wine is where to begin! They suit many different settings. We’ll start with a summer barbecue – anything on the grill from sausages or chicken to more delicate fish and shrimp, pair it with a dry rosé and you have a beautiful combination. Throw a few grilled vegetables into the mix and you’re in heaven! Also, just the pure association of sunshine and good weather with both rosé wine and the barbecue make this a winning combination from the outset! Another winner is Christmas dinner! It may not sound like the perfect pairing, but rosé goes well with harvest vegetables (think turnip, carrot, squash),

white meats and aromatic herbs (rosemary, sage, thyme, etc.) making it the perfect accompaniment to Christmas dinner which incorporates all these things. A good dry rosé will also ‘cut through’ the fattier elements of the dinner like the gravy and the ham, meaning the overall experience should be wonderful! And while we’re on the subject of roast dinners, a roast pork is an unbeatable pairing with a dry rosé – something to try out for your next Sunday dinner? Other dishes that work well with rosé include pasta dishes with vegetables and a light tomato sauce, something like ratatouille would be perfect. Salty, crumbly cheeses like halloumi and feta, and cured meats such as ham or chorizo. Combine the cheeses and the meats and set yourself up with a gorgeous charcuterie board! And finally, you can never go wrong with a good summer salad, particularly if there is fruit in it, like strawberries or raspberries – these will align beautifully with the flavours in the wine. If you prefer a sweeter style rosé, stick to food that has a similar sweetness to the wine. This might seem strange, but believe us, it works wonderfully! A sweet rosé would work with well with several desserts, particularly ones with red fruit or berries. We hope this has given you some inspiration to crack open a bottle of rosé and try it with your next meal. It’s a wonderfully versatile wine that has so much to offer. One word of caution; there is less room for poor winemaking to ‘hide’ in rosé than many other wines, so you really do get what you pay for. As always, please drink responsibly and never- EVER – drive after drinking. Sláinte mhaith duit fhéin agus dod’ chlann. Cheers.

YOUR MONEY MATTERS FINANCIAL ADVICE COLUMN Q&A

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne Cost Saving Energy Tips at home

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise? A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Volunteer for your local Credit Union

Volunteering in your community, whether it is with a sports club, a charity, helping children, promoting the Irish language, wildlife conservation, or whatever aspect of the community you have an interest in, it is a noble gesture to be admired. Many of our own local volunteers here in Corca Dhuibhne have dedicated years of their lives to improving their local community and their input is invaluable. Many local names spring to mind when we think of volunteerism and the contribution they have made to create our admirable community spirit. Heating & Insulation: This takes up a huge proportion of our energy bills so conserving heat will save you money. Aim for 20°C in your living areas and 15Ǧ18°C in hallways and bedrooms. You can reduce your heating bill by 10% by turning down the heat by one degree. By insulating your attic you can cut your energy bill by 20%. Install a lagging jacket and you can save up to €2.50 per week in heating water costs. Have your boiler serviced once a year to ensure it is operating efficiently.

Doors & Windows: Seal off your windows and doors to prevent heat loss due to draughts. Close doors to rooms that are not used often and keep your curtains closed at night, even in empty rooms.

Kitchen: This is the room in the house where we consume the most energy but there are lots of ways to cut back. You should only put as much water as you need in the kettle, so if you’re only making a cup of tea, don’t fill the kettle to the top. Electric ovens are expensive to run, so where possible keep the oven door closed during cooking. Use a toaster instead of a grill to make toast at a fifth of the cost. When buying new appliances choose the most efficient model you can afford. Bathroom: It costs the same amount of money to heat the water for one bath as it does for 5 showers, so save money and take showers!

Do yourself a favour and save money and energy at the same time! These are just the main examples of money saving tips but there are others, such as replacing your light bulbs with low energy bulbs, which use about 5 times less electricity than a normal bulb, and you could also consider getting a night saver metre and installing an electricity monitor to find out which gadgets are using the most electricity.

union. Although CCCD has paid professional staff, it is run by an unpaid volunteer board and Board Oversight Committee. Several directors are stepping down this year after years of service and they need to be replaced. Business experience would be an advantage, but the key requirements are honesty, competence and commitment and all necessary training will be provided. This training will cover topics such as business management, corporate governance, strategy, innovation & change, creative/digital marketing, leading for high impact & results, social media, law, HR or payments systems.

A credit union is not an aspect of the community that most people would automatically associate with volunteering but in fact volunteers are at the heart of every credit union, giving freely of their time to develop and enhance the services available. The Board of Directors of every credit union are volunteers who are responsible for the general control, direction and governance of the credit union and who ensure they have adequate and appropriate systems and resources in place to meet their legal and regulatory requirements. The Board of Directors are drawn from local members who have the skills and knowledge to lead and manage the credit union. Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne are currently looking for volunteers for the Board of Directors and for various committees, people who would be willing to give around 3 to 6 hours per month in helping out in the guidance and direction and governance of the credit

Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and there are many benefits for both the volunteer and for the community. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you to meet new people, make new friends, expand your network, boost your social skills, and the opportunity to give something back to your community.

Scéalta ón nDíseart Choirmeacha Ceoil Beidh cúig cinn do choirmeacha ceoil ar siúl i nGáirdíní an Dísirt an samhradh seo. Cuirfear tús leo ag am lóin ar an nDéardaoin 22 Iúil le Aoife agus Deirdre Granville óna 1-2 i.n. Táimid buíoch do Ealaín na Gaeltachta a chabhraidh linn na coirmeacha ceoil seo a reachtáil. Bhraitheamar uainn ceol beo le bliain anuas. Níor thuigeamnar a thábhacht go rabhmar ina éagmais. Is fiú na casóga báistí a thabhairt ar eagla na heagla.. ach ag an am gcéanna bhí an aimsir féith go dtí seo i nGáirdíní an Dísirt ag na hócáidí éagsúla a bhí ar siúl ann! Ní bheidh costas ar na coirmeacha ach beidh boscaí ann do dhaoine gur mhaith leo síntiús a thabhairt d'obair an Díseart. Cuirfear srianta na pandéime i bhfeidhm – beidh teora leis an méid daoine a ligfear isteach. Tar luath! Is breá go mbíonn an oiread san daoine ag baint sásaimh as na Gáirdíní. Briseadh Folcadán na nÉan le déanaí a chuir ana bhrón orainn. Is linn go léir na Gáirdíní agus is é ár mian iad a bheith ann don bpobal go léir. Ní féidir glacadh le mí -iompar mar seo. Is fúinn go léir a chinntiú nach dtárlaíonn a léithéid seo arís. Bheimís buíoch do thuismitheoirí as a bheith ag faire amach dá gcuid leanaí.

Lunchtime Concerts Five lunchtime concerts will take place in the Díseart Gardens this summer. The first one will be with Aoife and Deirdre Granville on Thursday 22 July from 1-2 p.m. We are grateful to Ealaín na Gaeltachta for helping us to run these concerts. We really missed live music during the past year – little did we realise its importance until we were denied it! It is worth bringing rain gear – just in case- even though the weather has been clement for events in the Díseart Gardens so far this year! The concerts will be free but boxes will be in place for people who would like to give a donation – however small – to An Díseart. Covid 19 regultions will be complied with – numbers attending will be restricted. Best to come early!

We are delighted so many people are enjoying the Díseart Gardens. The Bird Bath was broken lately which is a huge disappointment to us. ‘Ó neart go neart le treocht na teanga agaibh!’ Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh An Pleanálaí Teanga linn i Lios Póíl Casadh an Pleanálaí Teanga i dTobar Dhuibhne, John Prendergast, ar ionadaithe agus ceannairí na gCoistí is na hInstitiúidí atá gníomhach sa Ghaeilge i bparóiste Lios Póil le déanaí. Bíonn rudaí maithe mall, a deirtear, agus b’é an dála chéanna ag an gcruinniú seo a bhí ar na bioráin le dhá bhliain anuas againn, ach nár tharla de bharr Covid agus cúrsaí daonna nach raibh smacht againn orthu. Chruinníomar amuigh faoin spéir i bPáirc Sheán Baróid na gréine ar an 16 Meitheamh. D’fháiltigh Risteard Mac Eoin (Cathaoirleach Choiste Pobail/Féile Lios Póil) roimh John, agus chuir urlabhraithe na n-eagras atá gníomhach sa phobal in aithne dó, duine ar dhuine, le cuireadh do ghearrchuntas a thabhairt ar a mbeartais siúd dá bpobal sa Ghaelainn. Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh a chaith an chaid isteach le cúlra is comhthéacs a thabhairt don gcruinniú seo leis an bPleanaí Teanga. Roibeard: Fáilte romhaibh go léir, agus céad fáilte romhat go Lios Póil, ’John. Is fada sinn ag feitheamh led theacht, ach más mall is mithid! Ocáid ar leith gan dabht i stair na teanga i bparóiste Lios Póil í seo, mar a bhfuil ceannairí na n-eagras is na gclubanna atá gníomhach sa Ghaeilge inár ndúthaighne cruinnithe le chéile sa timpeallacht samhrúil seo, le tuairisciú ar ár mbeartais duit. Cé shamhlódh a leithéid seo fiche bliain ó shin, gan trácht ar leathchéad bliain ó shin nuair nach raibh rian den Ionad Pobail ná ná fiú den ghort caide seo ann. Ní lú ná san, níorbh theanga phobail í an Ghaeilge i Lios Póil trí fichid bliain ó shin is mé im gharsún. Bun agus barr ár scéil duit ‘John, le bunú Choláistí Gaeilge na Min Airde i 1972, go dtosnaigh athmhúscailt na Gaelainne inár bparóiste. Agus le bunú Choiste Pobail Lios Póil i 1979, is é mar sprioc againn gníomh fónta a dhéanamh chun leasa ár bpobal sa Ghaelainn, tá ár dteanga ag teacht chun cinn mar theanga phobail ó shin. Tá an Ghaeilge ag dul ó neart go neart sa chóras oideachais leis againn, le bunú an Naíonra i 1984 le breis is 500 leanbh gafa tríd idir an dá linn (an t-eolas seo a bhuí le Mairéad Uí Mhuircheartaigh, Stiúrthóir an Naíonra); agus séala na Gaelainne ar an mbunscolaíocht go leanúnach. A d’fhág go rabhamair réidh agus tiomanta don bPlean Teanga nuair a cuireadh tús leis an bpróiseas i 2016 fé scáth Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, agus an chaoi againn iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar chleachtais teanga ár muintire le cúnamh ó shaineolaithe teanga, le súil tógaint ar an mbunchloch a bhí leagtha de réir a chéile againn fhéin. Cuireadh tús leis an bpróiséas úd ar an 31 Bealtaine 2016 le cur i láthair i Scoil Eoin Baiste ag an teangeolaí Muiris Ó Laoire (MÓL) is an ráiteas so a leanas ar shleamhnán aige: Ceann de na dúshláin is mó atá le sárú ná deacracht maidir le hacmhainní daonna, ’sé sin – teacht ar dhaoine oiriúnacha le scileanna Gaeilge agus scileanna eagrúcháin agus teagaisc. Tá daoine mar seo gann agus titeann an-chuid cúramaí ar na daoine céanna a thugann go fial agus go deonach dá gcuid ama agus dá gcuid fuinnimh phearsanta. Sin buntáiste ollmhór atá againne anso i Lios Póil, agus a fhianaise sin an mheitheal mhaith atá i bpáirt linn inniu. Ar deireadh, d’ainmnigh M Ó L 11 réimse chun forbartha, agus ar an réimse deiridh bhí – úsáid na Gaeilge i measc an phobail, dearcadh an phobail ina leith, agus an méid a thacaíonn an pobal i gcoitinne leis an bPlean Teanga. As san a d’eascair ár bhforógra teanga, ’John, a roinneamar le gach teaghlach sa pharóiste, agus mar bhuille scoir anois agam, go luafad na príomhaidhmeanna ann, mar leanas: • Ár gcumas agus ár bhfeasacht ar an nGaelainn a fhorbairt • Líon na gcainteoirí laethúla Gaelainne a mhéadú 5% do Dhaonáireamh 2016 • Líon na dteaghlach a labhrann Gaeilge a ardú • Labhairt na Gaelainne i gcumainn agus i ngnónna a láidriú • Muintir ár bparóiste a spreagadh, agus tacú leo misneach a bheith acu an Ghaelainn atá acu d’úsáid go rialta, agus a normalú inár saol. 26 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Funding available for Rural Towns projects in South Kerry under Transitional LEADER Programme South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) is currently seeking expressions of interest from groups or promoters interested in undertaking projects under the Rural Towns sub-theme of Rural Development LEADER transitional Programme. Grant aid of between €1,250 and €10,000 is available for projects that aim to support the regeneration of rural towns in areas such as renovating derelict buildings with incentives to attract business to vacant properties, undertaking works in community buildings to support the local community, develop unique social events or support tidy towns initiatives. Funding is available at a rate of up to 75% of the total cost of the project for successful applicants. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that this call is an ideal opportunity for community groups and other promoters to avail of funding to help restart local towns and villages in South Kerry post Covid. He noted that many community and voluntary groups have been particularly hard hit by the restrictions that have been in place as they have not been able to fundraise or undertake other activities that are essential for them and we hope this call can assist them to get back up and running. “Given the next LEADER Programme will not come on stream until 2023, this Transitional Programme provides us with some funding to support the vital work and efforts of all sectors in South Kerry to begin the recovery from the damage caused by the Covid crisis” Noel said. A total of €90,000 is available under this programme call and project promoters are asked to get their Expression of Interest Forms submitted for the call before the 16th of July. “This Rural Towns sub-theme covers a broad range of potential projects Noel said and encouraged people who might be interested in applying for funding to contract their local LEADER project officer to discuss their idea in more detail. Full details of the call and an Expression of Interest Form is available on the SKDP website www.southkerry.ie 28 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Danno John Holstead: Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne On Friday morning, the 27th June the phone rang. The distressed chairman of the rugby club broke the news that Danno had died. This wasn’t part of the plan. The club was in the throes of making a big investment on the purchase of our rugby ground. Mortgages, planning permissions, septic tanks, changing rooms. We had covered the lot.

But nobody had told us Danno was going to die. Danno was never one for meetings. He did his own thing in his own way and the club, the town, the world, just had to live with it. And we loved living with it. Now here he was, at it again. Bloody well dying without telling a soul what he was up to. Only thís time it wasn’t going to be easy to, ‘live with it’. Over twenty years agó, Danno decided he was going to have a rugby club. He was going to have it slap bang in the middle of the heartland of Gaelic Football Country. Last Monday in the Dingle Crystal workshops, members of the rugby club were meeting to decide what would be the best way to make a large investment on the clubs grounds. The bulk of them, and bulk is the operative word, were the Senior players of Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne, Munster Junior League, Division 3. That there would be no rugby was not an option.

A. In general, young people aged 16 and 17 are not allowed to work before 6am in the morning or after 10pm at night. Employers may not require children aged 14 and 15 to work before 8am in the morning or after 8pm at night.

Employing Young People This summer a lot of young people will be taking up summer jobs for the first time, particularly in the hospitality and retail sectors. This can lead to parents or the young people themselves having a range of questions in relation to their employment rights and entitlements. The working hours for young people are regulated by the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996. The Act sets maximum working hours, rest intervals and prohibits the employment of young people aged under 18 in late night work. The Act does not apply to children or young people who are employed by a close relative.

Q. Do parents have to give their permission for their child to take up a summer job? A. If the young person is under 16, the employer must get the written permission of the child's parent or guardian. In general, employers must see a copy of the young person's birth certificate, or other evidence of their age, before employing them. Q. What rates of pay are there for young people? A. Since 1 January 2021, the national minimum wage is €10.20 per hour. This does not mean that everyone is automatically entitled to receive this. Young people aged under 18 are only guaranteed up to 70% of the national minimum wage, which is €7.14 per hour. Your employer can pay you more than the minimum wage if they want, but you should be aware that they are not required to do so by law.

Speaking about the employment of young people, Frances Clifford, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said that some young people may be starting work for the first time and while it can be exciting, it can also be a daunting prospect if they are unsure of their rights and entitlements. She added that sometimes employers are unclear about their responsibilities in relation to employing young people also. It is important that people are aware that staff at the local Citizens Information Service are there to provide support and to answer any questions that may arise for either employers, young people or their parents.

Q. How do I avoid paying emergency tax?

The following are some common queries:

A. If you are working in a workplace where staff are given tips and gratuities by customers (such as a restaurant, bar, etc.) there is nothing in law to state you are automatically entitled to these tips. However, the law does not require you to hand these tips to your employer either. Instead, it all depends on the custom and practice in your workplace. If all tips are collected by management and paid to staff through the payroll, then these tips are subject to tax in the normal way.

Q. My daughter wants to take on a summer job. As she is only 14 years old, I would like to know if there are limits to the number of hours that she can work? A. Children aged 14 or over may do light work during the school holidays where the hours do not exceed 7 in any day or 35 in any week. Children aged 15 may do 8 hours a week light work in school term time. The maximum working week for children aged 15 outside school term time is 35 hours, or up to 40 hours if they are on approved work experience. Q. Is the situation different for my son who is aged 16? A. The maximum working week for young people aged 16 and 17 is 40 hours, with a maximum of 8 hours a day. If a young person under 18 works for more than one employer, the combined daily or weekly hours of work cannot exceed the maximum number of hours allowed. Young persons are only permitted to work between 6am and 10pm. Q. Can young people be asked to work late in the evening?

A. When you start your first job, you should tell Revenue as soon as possible, or you may have to pay emergency tax. They will send a Revenue payroll notification (RPN) to your new employer. The RPN will tell your employer how much Income Tax and Universal Social Charge (USC) to deduct from your pay. Q. What is the situation in relation to tips?

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions about your employment rights, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Tralee on 0761 07 7860. They will be happy to assist you and if necessary arrange an appointment for you. The offices are staffed from 10am -4pm from Monday to Friday. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland Danno O’Keeffe Ar Dheis Dé Hello All, it is with great shock and disbelief that the community of Dingle town and peninsula received the news that Danno had passed away. What a terrible loss for his family, his relatives, his friends, his staff, his neighbours on Strand Street, and all who ever had the chance to be welcomed and touched by his hospitality and charm! Not only was he an icon to the youngsters who looked up to him, he was also an icon to all of us in the community – families, tourism and businesses alike. He lead by example – the quality of his “delicious, honest, home-cooked food”, his legendary welcome and hospitality, the essence of his character, his kindness, support and genuineness that he shared with all. The local clubs he supported, his words and gestures of encouragement and support, the traditions of his beloved town and his roguery as he presided over Dingle’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade – you were a sitting duck if you were on a float! But, how much he reflected the joy and delight of how the community came together to celebrate the importance of tradition, neighbours and families…. Thank you Danno for leading the way, in so many ways, and for so many wonderful memories along the way. How much he was respected and adored locally could be seen on display with the truly fitting tribute paid to him as he made his final journey………. Led out by Dingle’s Fife and Drum Band. On behalf of Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, our sincere condolences are with Celeste, Hilda, Gerdy, Toosie, Therese, Ruthie and all the family. Tourism News, Thanks & Congratulations: The uncertainty around indoor and outdoor dining has been very challenging not helped by weather not going our way. Our thoughts are with all the businesses across the peninsula who are managing in such challenging times to look after their customers and staff. They are doing an incredible job in keeping our ‘Fáilte’, quality and service at such a high level. Let indoors re-open on the 19th and let us all support them in any way that we can. Thank you too to the Kerry County Council teams who are doing a super job with extra bins and collections this season. Their support and back-up is terrific and so appreciated by all – Míle buíochas to all. Comhghairdeachas to the new experiences that have opened in recent times. It is terrific to see great new ideas and experiences happening – “Winging” and foiling lessons at Jamie Knox Watersports, Fun Food Discovery at Sandy Feet Farm, Dingle Pet Farm Lispole, Self-Drive Boat Hire at Brandon Pier and Dingle Marina, Dingle Harbour, Eco & Bay Cruises, Dick Mack’s Bottle Library, and all the new food styles and innovative dining options that have emerged. How lucky we are to have so many local entrepreneurs……. And Congratulations to all those winning such incredible awards and recognition recently – the Dingle Way, Cosáin na Naomh & Mount Brandon making Lonely Planet’s ‘Epic Hikes of Europe’ list, The Dingle Peninsula winning the inaugural .IE Digital Town Awards, Dingle Distillery – 4th consecutive year winning the Craft Producer of the Year at the Icons of Whiskey Ireland Awards 2021, TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards ‘Best of the Best Hotels’ Heaton's Guesthouse and Castlewood House were named the sixth and seventh best-rated Small hotels in Europe, and 20th and 21st in the world-- and Greenmount House placed 10th in Europe and last week, Dingle Sea Safari, was honoured at No. 3 of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice “best of the best” staycation experiences. Hard work does get noticed, so well deserved. Tourism Reminders: Free Guided Walking Tours on the Dingle Peninsula

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Hope you are all keeping well and getting some of the July sunshine between the wintry days. Over the last five weeks, during the Dingle Adapt s Energy live series, we talked to ESB Networks Dingle Project Ambassadors Carol Uí Laoithe, Rose Spillanne, Rory McKeown, Dinny Galvin and ESB Networks Dingle Project Community Engagement Manager Claire McElligott, to get insights into remember energy technologies and to understand how they’re adapting to them in their daily lives. This series provides a great insight for anyone thinking about undertaking a retrofit or investing in Solar PV systems, Air Source Heat Pumps or an Electric Vehicle. We concluded the series with an Interactive Session last Tuesday 29th June with a panel of experts, who covered a wide range of bases regarding moving to renewable energy technologies; they answered audience questions around grants, renewable technologies, sustainability in real life. Panel included Tom Fitzgerald (Community Engagement Coordinator for Dingle Peninsula 2030), Maggie Breen, Claire McElligott & Ciarán Geaney (ESB Networks), Xavier Dubuisson (SEAI Mentor), Carol Uí Laoithe and Rory McKeown (ESB Networks Dingle Project Ambassadors) and David Garner (Community Energy Mentor). Thanks to the panel for their insights and sharing and to the audience who joined us with questions. This series and interactive session provides a really good insight for those of you thinking about undertaking a retrofit or investing in Solar PV systems, Air Source Heat Pumps or an Electric Vehicle, so definitely join us if you can. The series is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and ESB Networks and supported by MaREI and NEWKD. You can watch the series and the concluding interactive session back on our YouTube and Facebook channels. Link on our websites www.dinglehub.com and www. dinglepeninsula2030.com Sustainable Innovation Project on the Dingle Peninsula We are looking for 30 farmers to participate in our Sustainable Innovation Project to test onfarm sensor technology. As part of an EU Horizon 2020 funded project, Dingle Hub together with Teagasc, Kerry Agribusiness, Net Feasa and the IFA are working together on this initiative to address and achieve early progress in hitting environmental/climate change targets; at the same time creating more profitable and sustainable farming systems through the introduction and use of sensor technology. We will be testing on-farm sensor technology, which will capture real-time data on the farms, with the aim of improving environmental metrics and precision management and also in reducing labour demand. 34 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Participants on the project will: - showcase how the technologies can reduce agri-emissions - share their knowledge and insights - develop a smart approach to farm business - a selection of the farms will act as ‘role model’ demonstration farms for the programme - share results and experiences Benefits: - All farmers will receive a report at the end of each year measuring their progress against their starting point and the targets set for the farm. The data collection will be achieved using a selection of sensors on each individual farm. Data captured will be analysed by DCU (Dublin City University) and Teagasc (data will be anonymous at all times) - The programme will demonstrate how to optimise your on-farm decision-making, for the benefit of both the environment and your profitability - Teagasc advisors and technical personnel will provide technical backup for farms, knowledge of the study principles, interpretation of the data and support in promoting improved environmental parameters together with broad sustainability

Small Changes: Soil Biodiversity

If you were asked to name a biodiverse habitat you might mention a tropical forest, a coral reef or perhaps a hedgerow or rock pool if you think more locally. I’d hazard a guess that very few people would provide soil as the answer even though soils contain at least one quarter to a third of all living organisms on the planet. Healthy soils essentially support all life on land, including people. They sustain our food systems, filter and regulate the flow of freshwater and store vast quantities of carbon and it is the biodiversity of the living organisms in the soil rather than its origin or soil type that matters most to support these processes. Like most ecosystems, soil is under threat (UK scientists, for instance, predict that there is less than 100 harvests left in most British soils) and mostly due to human activities. What constitutes healthy soil and why is it important? Healthy soil is alive and biologically diverse. It is full of organisms such as bacteria, fungi, spiders, ants, springtails, beetles, earwigs, woodlice, earthworms and nematodes to name but a few. A single teaspoon of healthy soil may contain thousands of species, billions of individual microorganisms and hundreds of metres of fungal networks. It is this biodiversity which sustains a vital ecosystem for plants, animals and humans. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of soil biology, especially in terms of agriculture. Healthy soil is full of organisms that structure the soil and decompose dead organic matter to produce humus for plants to flourish in (complex organic matter that cannot be manmade). Furthermore, microorganisms recycle and scavenge nutrients vital to the growth of plants while scientists are just beginning to understand the role of soil fungi (mycorrhizal filaments) in facilitating plant communication. Healthy plants sustain and nourish animals (including humans)

and provide materials such as textile fibres, wood, ingredients for pharmaceuticals etc. A soil rich in biodiversity is better able to control pests as it contains both a range of predator species and a varied supply of nutrients to support plant health and reduce plant stress. New research suggests soil microbes could have a big impact on the nutritional content of food. Research also suggests that the plants we eat and the dirt we come in contact with may directly fortify our own gut microbiomes, consequently having a significant impact on our overall health. The work carried by soil organisms enables soil to store and release carbon, helping to regulate greenhouse gases and thus the climate (recognised in the establishment of the 4 pour 1000 initiative). Different soils (213 different soil types in Ireland) have different carbon storage capacities. Peatland, for example, stores 20% of all soil carbon in Europe so the importance of Irish bogs as a carbon sink is not being understated (50% of all European blanket bog is in this country). A well-managed soil not only stores carbon but also helps buffer the effects of climate change as good soil structure reduces waterlogging and the impacts of drought. Ireland is also fortunate in this respect as semi natural grasslands and extensively farmed grasslands (as opposed to intensively farmed) are the most biodiverse of any soils. Healthy soil is integral to the purification and storage of freshwater. As water percolates through the soil contaminants including harmful bacteria and viruses are absorbed onto soil particles. This purification capacity depends on richness of the soil microbiome. Soil structure (channels, nests micropores) , created by earthworms, springtails etc. all promote water absorption while vegetation captures water and gives further structure to the soil. If soil structure is damaged then run off increases and leads to erosion and flooding. Degradation of soils compromise their ability to regulate the drainage, flow, cleansing and storage of water and this leads directly to water pollution. Despite their importance in all the processes mentioned, very little is known about most soil dwelling organisms. Only 1% of soil microorganisms, 2% of nematodes and 4% of mites have been identified, for example, compared to 80% of plants. Loss of biodiversity before we can even identify it means that we could be losing very important species from the point of view of medicines, pest control, bioremediation, climate regulation etc. Furthermore, the worldwide economic value of soil biodiversity in terms of the services provided and articles produced (food, fibres etc.) is calculated to be in the trillions of euro per annum. What are the threats to healthy soil? The threats to soil health are numerous highlighted by the fact that a third of the Earth’s

soils are already degraded and over 90% could become degraded by 2050. Erosion, as a result of farming practices, deforestation, overgrazing, fires and construction depletes the level of organic matter in soil literally starving soil dwellers. Sealing (e.g. with concrete, tar) effectively suffocates the soil. Soil compaction (by human and natural activities) crushes the soil, squeezes out the air and prevents water percolation. Overfertilisation with chemical fertilisers upsets the natural ecological balance of the microbiome (in addition to polluting waterways) while the use of pesticides and herbicides decimate biodiversity in a myriad of ways. Invasive species, salinization, agricultural intensification, climate change and genetically modified organisms all contribute to soil degradation. How can we protect soil biodiversity? As with all matters relating to environmental protection from the climate crisis to single use plastics, protecting soil biodiversity (and indeed, biodiversity in general) requires action at all levels of government and society from international, national and local governments to agribusinesses and farmers. Individuals can also contribute by becoming more informed on biodiversity and finding out what is being done by councils, NGO’s and companies to manage ecosystems wisely so that they can held accountable for their actions. Supporting re-wilding initiatives by councils, schools, churches, businesses etc. is a further useful measure that we can take as individuals. People can also support local farmers committed to farming sustainably. Regenerative farming is the new buzz word in sustainable farming practices. Essentially the aim is to promote and manage soil health which in turn produces healthy vibrant plants (including grasses) rather than focusing solely on plant growth. These practices include minimising ploughing, maintaining living roots in the ground year round, cultivating a variety of plants and integrating livestock onto the land at lower stocking rates (grazing and manure foster soil microbes), avoiding machinery and animal traffic when soil conditions are unsuitable, using fertilisers only when required and generally trying to increase biodiversity in all habitats on the farm. As individuals one of the more practical actions we can take is to make changes to how we garden. You can carry out a basic test of soil health to begin with by digging a 20cm3 sod and counting how many earthworms are in it (between 7-10 at least for a healthy soil). Minimal digging, keeping soil vegetated or using mulches to ensure there is no bare ground, using home composts and green manures rather than peat based products, using lime to regulate pH, not using pesticides and allowing areas of the garden to be re-wilded all help create the right conditions for improved soil biodiversity.

To those who know Joan no explanation is needed, to those that don’t ,Joan was the answer to all questions at Castlegregory Golf Club no matter how trivial or important. From Captains in the middle of their year to beginners starting their golfing journey Joan always had the solution. The Joan Ferriter Cup is for the golfer with the most gross prizes in the Golfer of the Year competition. It is fitting that 2020 Captain Richie Greer who came up with the idea of honouring Joan is the first winner Congratulations to Richie and thanks to Tom and Joan for their generous sponsorship of this years competition. Item taken from Castlegregory Golf Club Facebook page. OBITUARY The death of Maureen Sayers Ní Mhurchadha of Derrymore Bridge, Derrymore East, occurred, peacefully on 19th June, beloved wife of the late Thomas (Tommy) and dearest mother of Gerardine, Jean, Nicola and Aidan. Sadly missed by her loving family, her grandchildren Maeve, Michael, Conor, Amy, Jamie, Dylan and Ava, brother Seán, sisters Joan & Anne, brother-in-law Dan, sisters-in-law Sr. Philomena, Margaret, Alice & Joan, son-in-law Michael, daughter-in-law Fiona, extended family, neighbours and friends. Maureen, born and raised in Garrahies Camp was to follow in a family tradition of teaching and indeed it was a profession she enjoyed and loved. Maureen touched the lives of many many of our children teaching locally in Ballyduff, Cloghane NS and finally in Aughacasla until retirement in 1995. She is fondly remembered by all, her interest in education and learning and in giving her pupils a solid foundation which carried them through life in whatever field they choose was for Maureen the essence of her teaching and a real vocation for her. Long after her pupils had left her classroom, Maureen continued to enquire about their well being and whereabouts. Her daughter Geraldine in a lovely tribute to her mother's memory at her funeral Mass talked of her love of Kerry Football, a love fostered in Maureen in her youth when her brothers legendary Kerry footballers Dr. Sean Murphy and Seamus Murphy RIP won honour and glory for the County. Maureen's childhood friends in Camp were to form an important part of her entire life. She

Maureen was a font of general knowledge, local history, placenames, genealogy, she had it all in her head to the end. A love of the Irish Language also came from her home, her father Jackie Murphy was a Gaeltacht man from Baile na nGall. And even though he passed away at a young age, bothJackie and her mother Hannah instilled a love of the language in the family and indeed in the children of Camp National School. She was an unique human being, a people person which gives meaning to a love of your own place. Ní bheidh a léithid arís ann. Is é atá á mholadh ag garraíodóirí agus ag lucht comhshaoil na laethanta seo dúinn ná aird a bheith againn ar fad ar an éagsúlacht plandaí atá mórthimpeall orainn agus meas a bheith againn ar a leithéid. Moltar gan a bheith ag baint an fhéir chomh minic sin, fáilte a chur roimis na beacha sa ghairdín, gan na fiailí ná na bláthanna fiáine a mharú le nimh de shórt ar bith agus ligean don bhfiántas bláthú. Agus ar an bhfiántas sin tá mórán Éireann bláthanna gur gnách dúinn ‘fiailí’ a thabhairt orthu, an caisearbhán agus an chopóg sráide cuir i gcás. Luibheanna leighis is ea an dá cheann de na plandaí seo. Bíonn an caisearbhán buí órga fé bhláth ó mhí na Féile Bríde ar aghaidh. Tugtar Bearnán Bríde air in áiteanna mar gheall ar na bearnaí ar imeall an bhlátha. Tá ardmheas riamh ar an gcaisearbhán mar íocshláinte fola agus mar leigheas ar neamhghoile, ar ghalar ae agus an cháil is mó atá air ná mar fhualbhrostach – an chúis go ndeineadh leanaí é a sheachaint mar go dtuigtí dóibh go bhfliuchfaidíst an leaba dá bpiocfaidíst é. Bhí go leor breoiteachtaí eile go raibh an caisearbhán nó sú an bhlátha luaite leo mar chóir leighis – faithne ar na méaranta, an deilgneach, an galar buí nó fiú an eitinn. Dheintí tae leis na bláthanna agus na duilleoga nó dheintí sú bán an phlanda a chuimilt leis an gcraiceann. Tá nós ag lucht cócaireachta cnuasach bia a dhéanamh go háitiúil na laethanta seo agus is minic na duilleoga a fháil i sailéad, na bláthanna a fháilt mar mhaisiú ar chíste nó ar shailéad nó fíon a dhéanamh as an bplanda. Agus bhaineadh leanaí taitneamh as cluichí difriúla a bhain leis an gclog nó ceann síl an chaisearbháin. Shéidtí iad féachaint cén fhad a thógfadh sé an ceann síl ar fad a shéideadh. An té a dh’éireodh leis an ceann síl a ghlanadh leis an séideadh an té ba thúisce a phósfadh. ‘Neantóg a dhóigh mé, copóg a leigheas mé.’ Is beag duine ná fuil an ráiteas sin cloiste aige fén leigheas atá sa chopóg nó sa chopóg sráide mar is fearr aithne air. Ba mhinic an rann seo nó rann de shórt eile á aithris agus an chopóg á cuimilt leis an gcraiceann dóite. Ba mhinic a bheirítí an fréamh i bhfínéagar

Cromane News Jane Casey GAA SENIORS: County Senior Football League Division 5B (round 3): Cromane 1-11, Cordal 2-10 Cromane senior men welcomed another unbeaten side, Cordal, to Cromane for round 3 of the county league last Sunday. In a humdinger of a game, the visitors came out on top with a two-point win. Cromane started the brighter on a damp day, making first use of a strong breeze. Cordal, however, scored first with a long-range free from goalkeeper Seán Óg Ó Ciardubháin. Cromane then reeled off six unanswered points to lead by 0-6 to 0-1 after 18 minutes. The scores came via Darren Houlihan (2), Mikey Houlihan (2), Darragh McKeefry and Shane Ahern. The first water break came at a great time for Cordal as they dominated the rest of the half thereafter with Sean O'Connell and Philip O'Connor finding their form. They outscored us by 0-5 to 0-1 in the remaining first half time to narrow the gap to one at the break, Cromane leading 0-7 to 0-6. Our lads will be disappointed to have conceded all, but one, of those scores from frees. The second half was controlled by a Cordal but they didn't translate that dominance into scores and had only a Ó Ciardubháin free to show early in the second half. We then struck for the game's first goal when a quick break led to McKeefry rifling home from close range. After 40 minutes we still led by 1-7 to 0-7. We were still in a good position at this stage even playing into that stiff breeze, however, we were then hit with a double whammy of two goals in the space of four minutes. The first came from a penalty converted by Ó Ciardubháin and it was followed by a punched effort from Cordal substitute Jonathan O'Donnell. This propelled the visitors into a four-point lead (2-8 to 1-7) with ten minutes left. The Cromane men, to their credit, kept battling and points from McKeefry (two) and a mighty score from substitute Kieran O'Sullivan (who was nursing an ankle injury) had them back within one (2-8 to 1-10) with five remaining.

We thought we were set up for a grandstand finish but Cordal kept their composure and were able to finish the game out with two Philip O'Connor frees. Cromane’s only response was another McKeefry free.

Keary, Sean Doherty, Sam Kelly, Aidan Sheehan, Tadgh O’Sullivan, Paddy O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Connor (Glenbeigh-Glencar), Evan Keary, Oran Sheehan, Daniel Teahan, Eddie O’Sullivan, Eoin Gill.

A tough day for our lads, especially to lose a tight one at home.

Dingle Notes

assured of fresh baking in Green Street for many years to come. Really a great achievement to hear of a small business surviving and thriving in such a fast changing and competitive market especially over the past 10 years.

Richie Williams KERRY CALL. Kerry Call is a free telephone call service for older people and individuals who may feel lonely, isolated or vulnerable at this time. The service is at present available 3 days a week from Tuesday to Thursday between the hours of 11.a.m. to 4p.m. with the requirement that participants are living in County Kerry. The call will centre mainly on touching base and a short chat and or advice on topics suitable for the individuals involved. The contact person for further details is Julianne O'Connor at 0879126184 or email kerrycall@gmail.com. SPIN CITY. A big welcome once again for Turbetts Amusements who are back in full swing this week for their annual Summer visit to Dingle. Turbetts are now part and parcel of the Summer Season here in town and one of the many fine attractions catering for people of all ages throughout the Dingle Peninsula. The cheers and screams of young people along the Tracks in the evening as dusk falls brings memories of ones youth to mind again.

TOWN DEVELOPMENTS. The Outdoor Dining Furniture in Strand Street certainly came at the right time as the continued closure of indoor facilities means that our visitors are making great use of the facilities literally from dawn to dusk. The appointment of a new Traffic Warden means that the public will have to pay greater attention to where they park their vehicles as standards have slipped over the quieter winter months. The Business Chamber also request all business owners and empolyees to park their vehicles in the outskirts of town and not take up valuable town centre spaces for long periods each day. Some more 20 minute parking spaces will be put in place for short stay shoppers or for attending to other business/ services in the town centre. With a choice of 3 fine Car Parks in different areas of town and loads of space on approach roads there is very little excuse for people taking up spaces all day long.

FAREWELL DANNO. The huge crowd who lined the streets as Danno's funeral cortege passed through was true testament to the high regard in which the man was held, not alone in Kerry but throughout the whole country. His involvement in business and numerous sporting, political and other organisations brought Danno in contact with friends of all ages and his advice, guidance and good humour and wit really put a smile on so many people's faces. Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh A Anam Dílis agus Cinnte Ní Bheidh a Leithéad Arís Ann!. MUSIC. The title I Saw You At A Funeral has been chosen by local songwriter Pa Sheehy for his first solo single released last week. The former lead single with the very successful band Walking On Cars says this single is the first in a collection of songs which he put together during Covid Lockdown when the band decided to go their separate ways. The solo is getting good airtime on many stations and good reviews so already a great start to Pa Sheehy's solo career. AWARDS. Congratulations to the team at the Dingle Hub who were declared overall winners or the inaugural .IE Digital Towns Awards recently. The Reimagining Creativity Through Digital project also won the Small Town category and in total the Hub brought home a tidy sum of €19000. The funds will be used to progress their huge programme covering different aspects of life on the Peninsula. Keep up the good works folks. Molaim Sibh Go Léir. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN BUSINESS. Well known local businessman Gene Courtney is celebrating 50 years as a baker in Dingle Town. Newly weds Eileen and Gene set up their first outlet in the Quay in June 1971 and a few years later moved to Green Street where their fresh produce has been appreciated by both locals and visitors ever since. Now semi retired Eileen and Gene have been passing on their wide range of skills and knowledge of the baking business to family members so we will be

Film Review:

A Quiet Place: Part II Tom Ó Neachtain A Quiet Place Part II is the long awaited sequel to 2018’s acclaimed sci-fi thriller, A Quiet Place. The film picks up where its predecessor left off, following the main family as they navigate a world which is infested with creatures who hunt anything makes a sound. Writer-director John Krasinski maintains the same well-constructed characters and thrills as the first film, but sadly this sequel lacks the surprise on release which made the original such a treat.

The worldbuilding in A Quiet Place II fails to develop the well crafted setting which was established in the first, and also doesn’t leave much for the inevitable third film to build on. The nail biting thrills, along with the tremulous score, keep the suspense high throughout, and that tension only really falters towards the end. The action sequences are very well directed, but occasionally they feel repetitive and on occasion go against the logic established in the original. While the original had a definitive ending that also set up a sequel, this film ends on a sour note. It feels as though it ended half way through, rather than bringing the story to a satisfying close. The use of sound throughout is excellent, especially in the opening. It’s use leads to some stellar scenes. That paired the excellent editing make it ideal for cinema viewing. The opening flashback is excellently shot, and answers some

of the more important questions left by the first film. The performances from the new actors, Cillian Murphy in particular, make what could have been basic characters more interesting and likeable. The performances from the entire cast make the slower moments more palatable, and are a clear improvement over the original. While the lacking some of the surprise of the original, A Quiet Place Part 2 is a well performed, expertly directed sequel that maintains most of the original’s best traits, that’s elevated by its cinema release. Tom Ó Neachtain is a second year student in Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne

Charles Graves agus an Athbheochan Cheilteach le

Gearóid Ó Cearúil foilsithe ag

Coiscéim ‘Fear ildánach ab ea easpag protastúnach Luimnigh, Charles Graves (1812 - 1899), fear a thug i bhfad níos mó don réabhlóid intleachtúil in Éirinn ná a mhianach scoláireachta. Matamaiticeoir, scoláire clasaiceach, ársaitheoir, teangeolaí, amhránaí agus déan ar an séipéal ríoga i gCaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath tráth, ba mhór agus b’éagsúil a chuid buanna. Taispeánann an bheathaisnéis thráthúil seo an oidhreacht shuntasach phearsanta a d’fhág fathach intleachtúil seo an naoú céad déag. Is cinnte go gcothóidh sí athmheas agus tuiscint úr ar cheannródaíocht intleachtach an easpaig Charles Graves ar son na tíre ar thug sé grá di.’ Trevor Sargent, Coiscéim

Ó Mhárthain

agus deirfiúr Bríde ar Shlí na Fírinne. Bhíos an- mhor le Tóní. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a n-anamnacha macánta.

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Bhí aithne forleathan ar Dannó ó Caoimh ó Shráid na Trá sa Daingean a fuair bás tobann seachtain ó shoin. Bhí tábhairne agus sás bidh aige ar Shráid na Trá. Fear fáilteach cleachtúil b’ea é. B’é ba bhun is barr bunú cumann rugair sa cheantar. Creimeadh a chorp go príobháideach. Ard fhear ar lár. Solas siorraí Flaithis Dé ag a anam cleachtúil. Comhbhrón lena dheirféaracha Celeste, Theresa, Toosie, Hilda, Gerdy, agus Ruthie.

Tá aimsir bhreá againn agus laethanta boga. Is romhainn atá an teas agus an brothall agus eagla na gcnathacha sna caoire. Tá furmhór gach caora beárrtha. Is beag in aon chor a tugtar ar olann anois. Ní hamhlaidh a bhí le linn chogaidh domhanda a haon agus a dó. N’fheadar ná go mbeadh gnó fós di. Tá socraithe ar bun ag an Aondacht Eorpach le ísliu mór a dhéanamh ar thionscail na déiríochta, tús a chur le laghdú ar an líon ba agus beartais le tithe agus gluaisteáin leictreacha a chur in ionad íle le teas na cruinne a ísliú. Ta cúpla áit ar domhan cheana féin ná fuil iontu ach gainimh agus faíon,agus teas millteach. Is beag againn is dócha a mhairfeadh amuigh fén ngréin ansúd. Ceann dos na leighis ná na milliúin do chrainn síor- ghlasa chur. Bá chóir scata mór dos na crainn seo bheith á gcur againn. Beartas eile ná fuinneamh na gaoithe. Tá éirithe go diail leis an mbeartas san sa Spáinn mar a bhfuil soláthar sna hOllscoileanna le brú ar aghaidh chomh ‘glan’ agus is féidir. Tá roinnt áirithe dos na muilte gaoithe i scata tíortha. Is in iarthar na hÉireann is fearr a bheadh tarrac ortha mar tá an ghaoth níos treise ann ná in aon ait eile in Éirinn. Tá an chaint ann ná beadh aon teora le fuinneamh na farraige. Sin ceann eile ach níl aon dul chun cinn sásúil fós againn. Is baolach ná fuil a leithéid tagtha ar mhargadh na saoire fós. Is féidir muilte gaoithe a chur amach ón dtír. Tá sé tábhachtach fuinneadh go luath agus gan an feirmeoir a bheith thíos leis. Mar a dúrt tá socraithe ar bun ag an Aontacht Eorpach le laghdú mór a chur ar an gcarbóin atá ag bagairt ar chách. Beidh go leor fé seo ar ball agus caithfear cleachtaí mar atá a athrú do réir a chéile- ach réasunta. Cíonn tú ar an dTeilifís mar a scriosann galaí gaoithe ceanntair i scata áit ar domhan. Má tá ciorraithe le cur ar an líon bó caithfear áis eile a bheith ag an bhfeirmeoir. Dar liom go mbeidh cúiteamh áirithe ar fáil do fheirmeoirí ach go bhféadfadh sé a bheith níos ciallmhaire. Ní mór brú ar aghaidh sara dtiocfaidh an lá ná fuil ró -fhada uainn: mura n-ísleofar an teas scriosfar an chruinne. Ná beithfí ábalta an teas a ísliú. Gan dabht tá dualgas ar an tíortha móra a gcion a dhéanamh. Tá san tosnaithe ach níl ann ach iarracht bheag i laghdú ar an dteas ach tá coras á bheachtú agus siad Meiriceá agus an tSín is mó a chuireann isteach ar an nádúir. Deinimís ár gcion an fhadhb sin a fhuascailt go ciallmhar. Tá Uachtarán Mheiriceá tréis a rá go bhfuil sé sásta bheith páirteach sa phróiséis, rud ná raibh aon tsuim ag Trump ann. Cíonn tú éanlaithe an aéir agus éisc na farraige ag braith athrú suntasach, á léiriú don saol mór. Cad fé leá na mbloic mhóra leac oighre atá ag tarlú i bhfad níos tapúla ná ceapadh as a mbeadh ardú mór ar aoirde na farraige. Báithfear leath do thalamh an domhain de bharr ardú uisce. Tá san sa tarraingreacht agus móran eile agus abhar eolais na tarraingreachta ar muir agus tír agus drom láimhe á thabhairt don eolas- tá sé tosnaithe-teifigh ag ealó ó ainnise na haimsire laisteas mura mbeidh sé ró dhéanach, cosc a chur ar an droch aimsir. Bás Tá an bás go cúramach le tamall. Fuair beirt deirféar de mhuintir Uí Chuarnáin, ó Bhaile na Cúirte Abha na Scáil bás le déanaí. Duine acu, Ann, a bhí pósta le Mícheál Ó Críodáin, sa Chaislean Nua Thiar Luimneach, gur méala mór dó a bás agus an duine eile Máirín a bhí pósta i gCill Fhiontain le Mícheál ó Grífín (nach maireann). Deinimid comhbhrón le clann agus garchlann na beirte acu, agus lena ndeartháir Martin ar an bhfód dúchais agus a ndeirfiúr Bernie, agus a ngaolta agus cairde uile. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag anamacha na beirte acu Ó Baile Reó b’ea Pat Ó Súilleabháin a fuair bás le déanaí. Fear cruaidh b’ea é a bhí lán do cheol. Ní raibh aon chnámh leisciúil ina chorp. Bhí sé ocht mbliana agus trí fíchid. Is mó scaob cré a chuir sé le prátaí agus shluaisteáil sé deas agus clé nuair ba ghá. Oibrí maith stuifúil b’ea é. Cuireadh a chorp i Reilig Chill Chuáin. Tá a dheirfiúr Marion i gCorcaigh agus deartháir Toní

Fuair a fear céile Seán bás ní ró fhada ó shoin agus mac Pádraig. Maireann beirt iníon Eibhlín agus Hazel agus beirt mhac Seán agus Roibeárd. Bean cheannsa fháiltiúil b’ea Annie. Ní fada eile go mbeidh toradh comórtaisí sacair na hEorpa ar fáil. Bhí cuid dos na cluichí go diail ach a bhfurmhór go hainnis. Táim ag seasamh leis an Iodáil an sue a thabhairt leo, ach é seo á scríobh agam roimh an cluiche in aghaidh na Spáinne. Dá bhfaigeadh Sasana é agus d’fheadfadh, ní sheasódh éinne iad. Dea shláinte ag cách.
