West Kerry Care of the Aged Committee wish to say a big Míle Buíochas to the Blas organisers who donated a substantial amount of this year's entries to their organisation. Another prestigious prize for Castlewood House who were announced this week as the Georgine Campbell Guesthouse of the year 2021. High standards and hard work certainly deserve such rewards which are indeed very difficult to come by in such a competitive business. BRÚSCAR. Kerry County Council have replaced the litter bins around town with larger more modern type units which enhance the areas where they are positioned. A phenomenal amount of rubbish has been collected over the past few months amounting to 18400kg in June, 15870kg in July and 14180kg in August. Well done on the huge affort by Council staff particularly this year when outside dining brought ita own on street litter problems. FUNDRAISING. Is there Trouble brewing in your favourite Cuppa? Irene Ní Fhlannúra

There are various accounts of the origins of coffee, but the most popular is the discovery made by Kaldi, a goat herder in Ethiopia during the 9th century. He noticed his goats dancing from one coffee shrub to another after consuming the red berries, in which the coffee bean is contained. Curiosity took over and Kaldi decided to try out these bitter berries for himself and soon he was as giddy as the goats. A passing monk on witnessing the antics of Kaldi and the goats, decided to pick some for himself and his brothers and sure enough, they were up all night praying and filled with divine inspiration. From these humble beginnings, word spread and coffee is now one of most widely consumed drink in the world. It is second to oil as the most traded commodity in the world. Many studies claim that drinking one to two cups of coffee per day can protect against cancer, particularly liver and colon cancer. It also offers protection against conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, Type 2 Diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The health benefits are primarily attributed to caffeine which temporarily increases the output of our stress hormones - which, in small amounts, produce positive effects all over the body. Caffeine is a stimulant in coffee which can increase our energy levels and metabolism, improve concentration and alertness as well as increase the rate at which we burn fat (mostly to fuel the extra energy burst). Antioxidants and tannins in coffee also have protective qualities - protecting us from free radical damage which is good for our heart, brain and vascular system. On closer examination of these studies, the benefits of drinking coffee lie in its “protective” qualities, reducing risk of disease, rather than a curative effect, which treats a specific ailment or disease. Interestingly, coffee can make some existing conditions worse and impair healing. For example, coffee induces contractions in the gallbladder - thereby increasing the flow of bile and aiding the function of the gallbladder - this is good as it protects from gallbladder developing disease. But, when gallstones already

exist - these extra contractions can worsen the condition and increase pain, inflammation and the risk of obstruction in the gallbladder - not so good! The same is true for Type-2 diabetes, much of the studies examine populations of coffee drinkers compared with non-coffee drinkers. Coffee drinkers are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, probably due to high levels of magnesium and chromium in coffee which assist insulin to work more effectively as well as the protective antioxidants in coffee. However, once type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, most of the protective qualities of coffee are negated as the body struggles to benefit from this beverage. Also, many of the other habits linked to drinking coffee, such as adding sugar, smoking and eating sweet foods far outweigh any benefits that coffee may offer. It is important, therefore, to look at these studies a little closer before you order a super-sized cup of latté, hoping to find a cure for diabetes at the end of your mug! The first commercially-available decaf coffee came from a German merchant in 1906. Ludwig Roselius believed his father (also a coffee merchant) had died from too much caffeine and searched for a way to remove the “poison” from coffee beans. This led to the establishment of Kaffee HAG, a famous (or infamous) brand of decaffeinated coffee which grew popular as a “health” drink during the 1930s in Germany and soon after the war, was widely available throughout Europe. We know from research that caffeine, in moderate amounts, offers protection from neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia because of its positive impact on the neurotransmitters involved in cognitive function, alertness, concentration and memory. But there is the downside - too much coffee over-stimulates these same neurotransmitters leaving us feeling agitated, anxious and jaded. Caffeine affects our sleep patterns, particularly if consumed late in the day, and lousy sleep is a major drain on our physical and mental wellbeing. Decaf, at first glance, might seem like a good alternative but the processing and chemicals involved in removing the caffeine can be harmful in other ways. Caffeine is removed from the bean by soaking it in a solvent such as carbon dioxide or methylene. Roselius relied on benzene as the solvent of choice back in the 1930s until it was banned because it was discovered to be a human carcinogenic and more recently (1970s), another solvent - trichloroethylene was discontinued due to its carcinogenic properties. If choosing decaf, look for safer methods for decaffeination (without solvents) such as "Swiss water process" which uses activated charcoal or carbon filters to remove the caffeine. These newer methods may add an extra cost to your decaf, but well worth it in the long run, if it is part of your daily routine. As with all good things in life – moderation is key. Most research shows that the health benefits come with one or two cups of coffee a day, whereas more than five will certainly negatively impact on your health. If you have a pre-existing health condition or on medication find out how caffeine may impact on your illness and your meds. Thankfully, most people can enjoy a cup or two of this glorious brew knowing its great taste, aroma and caffeine offer some goodness and can raise our spirits - just like it did for Kaldi, his goats and the monks! Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor CAMP FAIR The sun shone down on us all day on Camp Fair Day, Monday 20th. Sept. One of the biggest fairs in recent years, there were plenty of sheep sold and bought and a few horses, ponies and donkeys too adorned Camp Cross. The traders were back too with plenty of bargains to be had. The Fair as always is truly intergenerational with the same families dealing in sheep down the centuries. Camp fair on Monday was no different. Castlemaine family, the O Donoghue clan came again to buy sheep, this time Pádraig O Reilly did the dealing Cathy was there too along with her children. Old and young were at the fair and Jack Creans fine red ponies rail holding sheep at the cross was handmade by his late father John. Johns great grand daughter Clara had her pet lamb Paddy and meeting up with her classmate from Camp Childcare, Marcus Deane was a highlight for both of them. Marcus along with him Mum Katie McDonnell got great joy from the ponies and horses, again a heritage going back generations in the Deane family of Camp and Katie, a prize winner in National Competition Horse Shows in recent times. Music as always at Camp Fair filled the air from early morning with local singer and performer Gerard Mulligan in charge in O Dwyers yard and later outside Ashes Bar. Accomplished accordeonist James Bowler joined in too and a violionist entertained all day in the Cross. Later on the Fair night Kate Mulcahy and Nora Rice led a great traditional session of music in The Junction Bar.

CHARITY CYCLE Charity Cycle for Beaumont ICU & UHK Cardiac Rehab. Ann Eager is undertaking a charity cycle ride (over 500kms) from Derry Beag, Co Donegal to Derrymore, Co Kerry. Ann commenced the cycle on Monday 27th Sept and will finish on Saturday 2nd October. The cycle is in aid of the Intensive Care Unit, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit, University Hospital Co Kerry. Well done to Ann who is doing the cycle in memory of her late sister Pauline Lynch, who sadly passed away unexpectedly in December 2019. Pauline was an amazing family person, full of life and always smiling. This is reflected in her

three beautiful children. Ann who hails from Ballymacelligott herself is well known in Camp being a member of the Camp Drama Group since its inception 10 years ago. FUNDRAISER Dip In the Nip took place in Shoreacre Camp to raise funds for Recovery Haven in Tralee. Over 170 women took part many who may have either experienced Cancer themselves or indeed had a family member or friend affected. Well done and congratulations to all those who took part. No doubt the money raised will go to good use.

Of course, Camp fair would never by without mutton pies and Marys pies at Camp Junction Bar were sold out that evening and O Dwyers too had great demand for pies and hearty meals and lunches all day. Ashes delicious shepherds pies were in great demand and Ann O Sullivans Coffee Bar and fancy baking went down a treat all day. North Kerry photographer, Moss Joe Browne arrived too and he was taking photos all day and recording videos, thanks Moss Joe, always welcome. AG MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2021 Ag Mental Health Week 2021 takes place from October 10th-16th, with an aim to reduce the stigma around suicide and mental health and highlight the importance of prioritising mental well-being. Cork dairy farmers, Peter and Paula Hynes, founded Ag Mental Health Week last year. They have received support from a global group of like-minded leaders who share a commitment to addressing mental health within the agricultural industry.

• Extensive livestock production – farmers to keep within a specified maximum stocking rate each year.

Ag Mental Health Week aptly begins on World Mental Health Day and will feature daily social posts with well-being tips and panel discussions that explore mental health issues from various perspectives.

• Use of GPS-controlled fertiliser spreading – Fertiliser to be spread with GPS-controlled spreaders.

Organisers will live-stream panel discussions on Facebook with the lineup to include: • Racheal McGrath, a young Australian dairy farmer, Jessica Sperber, a student, PhD scholar in ruminant nutrition (University of NebraskaLincoln, USA); • Minister Martin Heydon from Ireland and Minister Boyce Thompson from Canada; • Dr Rachel Ward from BBC Breakfast; • Lizzie Locket, RCVS CEO, and a guest panel of veterinary surgeons from around the world; • Family members of loved ones who faced a mental health crisis. To further promote the prioritisation of mental health and wellness, anyone connected to the agriculture industry is encouraged to take a one-mile walk or run, on October 13th. Organisers ask participants to take a photo along their journey and post it to their social media pages using #MileForMentalWellbeing. They hope the activity will unite the ag community worldwide and highlight the “crucial” importance of taking breaks, enjoying nature, and clearing our minds. BOYLE COMMENTS ON BEEF/SUCKLER SECTOR UNWELCOME The outgoing director of Teagasc, Prof. Gerry Boyle, said recently, that he “profoundly regrets” that his recent remarks on dairy beef caused “such considerable annoyance and offence”. Regrets are not apologies, and someone of Prof Boyle’s education, and experience should know the difference, but he still prefers to use regret rather than sorrow. Boyle recently noted that many beef producers as well as advisory colleagues in Teagasc had been troubled by the unscripted comments, which came in answer to a question at a recent Dublin Economics Workshop. His actual comment was that “We think the biggest potential shift that could take place is actually in the beef sector. A shift to what we call dairy beef. Anaerobic digestion is a possibility; carbon farming in the longer term.” Beef and suckler farming is tough enough and remarks that try to pigeonhole the sector are regrettable, alright. Solid advice is what’s needed, not irresponsible remarks. Let us hope that the in-coming director will be a tad more sensitive to the needs and the sensibilities of our hard-working beef farmers. Enough said! DEPARTMENT REVEALS 5 ECO-SCHEME ACTIONS FOR NEW CAP Many are asking of late what the new CAP proposals will bring. The answer is that we do not know, but there are talks of a new emphasis on agri-environmental schemes. Some of the proposals coming down the track may be interesting. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has revealed proposals for five different eco-scheme actions for the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The eco-scheme is to be implemented through targeting of “relevant agricultural practices and will provide the opportunity for as many farmers as possible to take up the most appropriate actions on their farm,” according to the department The proposed actions were shown to stakeholders on the CAP Consultative Committee. The department proposes that a farmer would have to select two of the five actions to maximise payment At the moment, it is envisaged that payments will work out at around €75/ha, payable on all hectares, including those without entitlements. 12 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

• Limiting chemical nitrogen input – farmers to keep within a specified chemical nitrogen usage limit each year. • Planting native trees – farmers will have to plant a minimum number of native trees per eligible hectare;

Eligible beneficiaries will be required to submit an application for the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) – the replacement for the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) – in respect of each year of participation in the eco-scheme. Eligible beneficiaries will have to opt in or out on an annual basis. Proposed support rates/financial allocation support is based on an annual payment for all eligible hectares covered by the commitments, i.e. farmers will receive payment on all eligible hectares on their holding. Payments will be made on additional costs incurred and income foregone, in line with EU rules. The department expects that some 130,000 eligible farmers may participate in the scheme. The payments per hectare will be impacted by expected participation and the expected uptake of various actions. Eco-schemes are funded out of the national Pillar I envelope for each EU member state. The schemes are mandatory for member states to design and implement, but optional for farmers to join. However, entering eco-schemes will be the only way for farmers to achieve similar levels of direct payments as they have done in the current and previous CAPs. NEW BILL PORPOSED TO CLARIFY RIGHTS OF WAY The Department now proposes to to amend the provisions in the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act 2009. This move will remove an upcoming deadline which was a matter of “significant concern”. The amendments are regarding easements, such as rights of way, held by a property owner over a neighbour’s land, and profits à prendre. Under the current Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act 2009, Rightsof-Way are other rights over another person’s land, such as fishing or shooting rights, that have been acquired by ‘prescription’, which is by long use as of right, where there is no written deed formally granting the right, or the written deed has been lost. Prior to the 2009 Act, prescriptive rights of way were usually verified by simple statutory declarations of long use. The 2009 Act introduced a new requirement for a prescriptive right to be verified by a court order and registered with the Property Registration Authority (PRA). An amendment to the law, made in 2011, provided that, if the prescriptive right was not contested by the owner of the land affected by it, the claimant could apply directly to the PRA to validate and register their right based on long use. The deadline for applications under the old rules made to court, or directly to the PRA, was also extended to November 30th, 2021. After that deadline, prescriptive rights could still be validated and registered, but only under new rules taking effect on 1st December. It will still be possible to confirm a prescriptive right, either by applying to court or by registering it directly with the Property Registration Authority. But this will be optional, (as it was before the 2009 Act), rather than a mandatory requirement to avoid losing any rights acquired through long use. Provision will also be made to ensure clarity on the situation of applications already made to court or to the PRA that have been lodged, but not decided, before these changes come into effect. Existing public rights of way, and easements (or profits à prendre) held under a written title deed, are not affected by the changes mentioned in this press release. NEW ON-LINE SYSTEM ALLOWS FARMERS TO APPLY FOR TB COMPENSATION From Thursday 30th September, farmers will have the option to complete their application for TB compensation under the On Farm Market Valuation scheme online via Agfood.ie. The new

TB compensation portal will also allow farmers to accept or reject the valuation of their animals which will have been carried out on farm by an independent valuer. Farmers will continue to receive the valuation of their animals by hard copy from their valuer and can then log on to agfood.ie to accept or reject that valuation. This new facility is aimed at reducing the amount of time TB reactors spend on farm as it will expedite the response time from farmers to DAFM and eliminate the cost to farmers of forwarding forms by post. Farmers have proven that they are willing to embrace the advantages of online communication and DAFM intends to continue to develop our online facilities to meet that willingness”. The new facility is easy to use but a user manual is available via the TB Compensation section of the Departments website if required. Farmers not already registered for Agfood.ie can do so by logging onto www.Agfood.ie and clicking the “Register” button. PILOT SOIL SAMPLING PROGRAMME The pilot Soil Sampling Programme is a farm level soil sampling and analysis initiative which will provide farmers and their advisors with comprehensive details about the soil health and soil condition on their farms. These results can be used to target soil management and farming practices to achieve economic and environmental sustainability on their farms. Each sample will be taken over a maximum of 4 hectares and limited to a maximum of 64 hectares on each farm. In lieu of payment each famer will receive the analysis reports with information on macro- and micro-nutrients, soil carbon and average farm level load of harmful bacteria. Participation is voluntary and it is open to all regions and farming enterprises. Applications to the programme will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. If the programme is oversubscribed a selection of enterprise type and a regional spread will be applied to select participants. To qualify or be eligible for the pilot Soil Sampling Programme, you must: • have applied for a BPS 2021

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Thank you to everyone for making our 24 Hour Walkathon such a huge success What an amazing 24 hours for our club as our club members and community came out in their hundreds to support our Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA Walkathon this past weekend. A huge thank you to anyone who walked with us, anyone who donated money to our team and to everyone involved. Thank you also to the organising team and team captains for having their teams in place ready to take the take their leg of the relay. To all of the volunteers who prepared the grounds for the big day, looked after our walkers on the day a to absolutely everyone who helped the most warm and sincere thank you to you all.

The week finished off with a bang in the Central Region U13s as with the ground still buzzing with the senior teams victory over Laune Rangers our U13 started to warm up to face Austin Stacks. An absolutely enthralling game of football ensued with our U13 team claiming a great win by a single point at full time.

The walkway looked spectacular over the weekend which is a credit to all involved. The support of our community walkway sponsors Gary Landers and Matt Standon of Mid Kerry Veterinary Centre and the sponsors of our social corner Foleys Spar Milltown is also sincerely appreciated. The area in the corner of our club grounds was fantastic on the day providing an opportunity in the open air but under cover to catch up with friends, family and club-mates. Thank you so much to those who delivered an incredible amount of delicious baked goods, extra treats and anyone who contributed in anyway. Thank you also to the South Kerry Development Partnership for their support and funding of our walkway and in particular to Noel Spillane and Sean De Butlier for at-tending on the morning to open our walkway. There were too many highlights on the day to pick out but one of them was in the small hours Deirdre O’Sullivan captured this amazing picture of Eileen (Mangan) Fitzgerald who walked from 3 to 4am passing over the torch to her parents James and Bridie Mangan and was a wonderful moment. 1 tin of tomatoes 2 tomatoes, seeds removed and diced handful of parsley, chopped 1 lemon, zested Method Put a casserole pot over a medium to high heat. Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Once the pot is hot, add a little oil and then add the chicken pieces (you may have to do these in batches depending on the size of the pot). Allow them to brown on all sides. Once you have browned them, remove them from the pot. Turn the heat down and add a little butter followed by the onions, let this cook slowly for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, anchovies, olives, bay-leaf, thyme and oregano. Cook this slowly for about 5 minutes. Add the wine and let this reduce by half. At this stage you return the chicken to the pot, add the stock and tomato. Bring this to a gentle simmer and cook for about an hour and a half. At this stage the chicken should be very tender and the liquid should have thickened. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed (remember that the anchovies and olives may be very salty. Add the diced tomatoes, parsley and lemon zest. Serve with a delicious potato gratin. Bain Taitneamh As!

Siamsa Tíre Re-Opens Its Doors With New Art Exhibition For Children Imagine walking into a life-sized picture book full of magical and mystical images of Halloween. That’s what the children of Scoil Eoin Primary School Balloonagh did on Thursday, September 23, when they were the first group to be invited to see A Way Home/Slí Abhaile, the first major event to take place at Siamsa Tíre since lockdown. A Way Home/Slí Abhaile is an exhibition that started with a story. A story based on the traditions and folklore associated with Halloween written by Killarney-based children’s writer, Olivia Hope. Siamsa Tíre had commissioned Olivia to write this story to introduce today’s children to the rich folklore surrounding this Celtic festival. When they read it, they were so impressed with her story that they decided to build an art exhibition around it, commissioning 20 of Ireland’s best children’s illustrators to bring scenes from the story to life. That list of illustrators is an illustrious one, featuring award winners such as Karen Vaughan, Lauren O’Neill and Margaret Anne Suggs as well as New York Times bestseller Eva Byrne. Their works now hang on the walls of Siamsa Tíre’s art gallery, illustrating a tale that begins with two siblings getting lost in the woods on Halloween. They then set off on an adventure that sees them encountering banshees, a cheeky púca, and some lost souls before they learn the true meaning of Halloween. There are 46 artworks in total, displayed in the gallery at the eye level of the target audience, gradually moving up from floor work for babies to adult height by the end of the story. Olivia was thrilled with how the children responded to the exhibition. “As soon as illustrators were inspired by my story to create these beautiful images, I realised that it wasn’t my story anymore,” she says. “It had also become theirs. And today, when I saw children looking at those images, I understood that before they read words or have words read to them, they understand narrative through pictures and interpret pictures to create their own sense of a story. In that way, my story is now theirs. It’s a story that will belong to everyone who comes to see this exhibition in Siamsa Tíre.” This exhibition is supported by Children’s Books Ireland. It will be one of the main events of this year’s Samhain Festival at Siamsa Tíre and continue until November 21. It’s a free exhibition that is open from 23rd September from 10am – 6pm Thursdays to Sundays and from 4th October it will be open from 10am to 4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The Wildlife Of Corca Dhuibhne Gordon D’Arcy

The suite of mammals that has made the peninsula home is impressive. Rabbits, hares, bats, shrews, rats and mice and their chief predators, foxes are ubiquitous. Badgers favour the woods and hedges while otters prefer the rivers and wetlands where fish and frogs are the main prey species. Both being retiring and largely nocturnal, however, are not often seen. In the absence of predators, the many hares on the Great Blasket Island are unusually confiding, as are the hundreds of grey seals that haul up on the beach below the abandoned village. A boat excursion around the islands is a trip into an ecological wonderland. Whether surveying the sea for the exuberant antics of pods of dolphins, or scanning the ‘seabird cities’ of the island cliffs for guillemots, puffins, razorbills, the experience is ‘’full-on’’. The highlights of my late August trip were close views of Risso’s dolphins and minke whales and Inishvickillaun’s red deer herd. It was great to see that those introduced by Charles Haughey half a century ago are thriving on the island. Corca Dhuibhne may have recently lost its mammalian icon, Fungi, but it retains a peninsular wildlife heritage second to none on this island.

Corca Dhuibhne, famous for its human and cultural heritage is unfortunately less well known for its extraordinary natural heritage. Its geographical location as a peninsula reaching out into the Atlantic, with its varied habitats- mountains, rugged coastline, islands, woodlands, wetlands and sand dunes- supports an amazing variety of wildlife. Two entire summers, gloriously confined to Inch (due to the pandemic) have provided me with a unique opportunity to explore the peninsula’s magical hinterland and its flora and fauna. For wildflowers I needed to look no further than the dunes. From May to September the dune systems of Inch and Castlegregory are resplendent with colourful flowers. Pansies, cranesbills, eyebrights, milkworts, early purple orchids and a host more, decorate the dunes in spring. In early summer these are joined by lady’s bedstraw, clover, sheepsbit, hawkweed and the insect duping bee orchid. Later, sea spurge, bindweed and the exotic-looking sea holly come into their own. This display has all the floral extravagance of the famous ‘rock garden’ of the Burren. What a pity that many beach goers miss discovering it for themselves.

Floral richness attracts insect nectar-seekers and pollinators. A bewildering variety of bees, hoverflies, day moths and butterflies which inhabit the dunes are particularly evident when the sun shines. A few clouded yellows, butterflies from the Mediterranean drifted among the dunes during the late summer hot spell in 2020. Other Corca localities harbour interesting butterflies. Ireland’s largest, the silver-washed fritillary, is on the wing in autumn, in the beautiful woodland glade at Scotia’s Grave. Corca Dhuibhne’s celebrated amphibian, the natterjack toad, is found in a few wetland habitats on either side of the peninsula. Being nocturnal it is much more likely to heard (during the mating season) than seen. There are plenty of frogs too but the natterjack is easily identified by the yellow line down the length of its back and its preference to scurry rather than hop. More than a hundred bird species have been identified on the peninsula. Shorebirds such as oystercatchers, curlews, turnstones and sanderlings exploit the abundant food resources of the coast. In autumn, scoters and divers share the shellfish beds and gannets (from the Skelligs) plunge for fish from the air. Though thinly dispersed, skylarks, pipits, stonechats, ravens and others announce their presence in the uplands with their distinctive calls. The red-billed chough, an inhabitant of the cliffs at Minard, could be described as the ‘Wild Atlantic Crow’ since its Irish range corresponds closely with the famous route. Birds of prey are also a feature. Peregrines and hen harriers, residents of the uplands, come to the coast after the breeding season and the rare marsh harrier has been spotted at the extensive Baile an Reannaigh wetland. Sadly, the golden and sea eagles once Corca Dhuibhne inhabitants, are gone from the cliffs but may well return, now that they have been re-introduced elsewhere in the country. Regular birdwatching has revealed that rare birds from other parts of the world occur on the peninsula. An Asian shrike (the first for Ireland) turned up near Ballyferriter a number of years ago, attracting ‘flocks’ of birders from all over Ireland and Britain. In September 2020 another rarity, a buffbreasted sandpiper, from North America, appeared in the saltmarsh at the end of the Inch peninsula. 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Environment & Language

Prof. Padraig Ó Duibhir notes that speakers of major world languages don’t tend to learn minority languages such as Irish because they lack political and economic power. He believes that for us to learn and speak Irish we need to see its’ value from the perspective of our culture and heritage rather than merely communication. Perhaps we should add the conservation of biodiversity and our environment to those values. As pointed out by Manchán Magan, ancient languages that have been spoken for thousands of year are rooted in the landscape and to a way of living which is tune with the natural environment. It was clear to our ancestors that everything was connected on a fundamental level. The phrases of local minority languages, with Irish being no exception, reflect the distinctions people observed in plants, animals, the landscape and the climate with which they lived so intimately.

I do not have a natural aptitude for languages and despite being fortunate enough to have excellent teachers for English, Irish and French, every class was more of a lesson in endurance than learning grammar and vocabulary. My attempts at learning Hamlet, the passé composé and Peig, left me with the polar opposite of a ‘grá’ for any language but an enlightening lecture in college on the link between languages and biodiversity led me to have more respect for them. A number of recently published articles have reminded me how important language is, not only in the communication of science, but also for the conservation of biodiversity. English is largely regarded as the global language of science with 80% of all peer reviewed papers published in English. There are obvious benefits to this, chief among them the fact that a global science community can build a knowledge base. However, when it comes to scientific communication and education, the language used matters more because it aims to bridge the gap between scientists and society. Imagine, for example, if Mandarin Chinese was the global language of science; how much would be lost in translation when trying to explain something as complex as the climate crisis to the Irish public? Yet, this is the reality for most societies around the world. Consider also languages which are spoken by millions but for which there is no consensus on the translation of many common scientific terms e.g. African languages Yorùbá (approx. 45 million speakers) or Amharic (22 million speakers). It is very difficult to expand knowledge and teach facts and science methodologies into cultures previously denied it if the words do not exist (Decolonise Science). While poor communication of science is a serious issue, more worrying is the loss of knowledge that is useful to science due to the loss of languages. While it has been widely acknowledged that the degradation of the natural environment results in a loss of cultural and linguistic diversity, new studies suggest that language loss on its own has a negative impact on biodiversity and biodiversity conservation. As one researcher eloquently explains it “every time a language disappears, a speaking voice also disappears, a way to make sense of reality disappears, a way to interact with nature disappears, and a way to describe and name animals and plants disappears”. Of the approximately 7,000 languages currently spoken on the planet, only about half are expected to survive and about 5,000 of those are in regions of high biodiversity. As Indigenous groups traditionally rely on the spoken word for intergenerational knowledge transfer, the disappearance of these languages will take with it the deep understanding and knowledge of the local environment. This information includes traditional knowledge about plants, soil regeneration and food cultivation, irrigation techniques, navigation systems, ecological niches and seasonal calendars. Furthermore, a recent study at the University of Zurich in Switzerland shows that a large proportion of existing medicinal plant knowledge is linked to threatened Indigenous languages. This means that language extinction will also trigger the loss of unique medicinal knowledge which

Learning Irish as a means of communication is very important. However, learning the language in a way that informs us of our connection to our local environment and to nature to remind us of how to live more sustainably, might be more valuable than knowing na briathra neamhrialta off by heart. MID KERRY MINORS: The Mid Kerry minors made it two wins from two in the County Championship last Sunday when they beat North Kerry in Beaufort. The final score was Mid Kerry 1-11, North Kerry 1-9. Cromane had two players in the starting lineup with Darragh Crosby in goals and Jason O’Connor at full-forward. Cian Lyons, just back playing after a long injury layoff, was also on the panel. Their final group game is against South Kerry this weekend. Darragh was very composed in goal and Jason

was always a threat up front, kicking a fine point to seal the win late on. Well done lads. UNDER-13s: Under-13 Central Region (round 2): GGC 5-17, Castlegregory 5-18 The GGC under-13s played their second game in the Central Region competition on Sunday last in Glenbeigh - and what a contest it was! The teams shared a total of 10 goals and 35 points in a game that swung back and forth. It was a credit to both sides for producing such displays. Well done to all involved, even though we ended up on the losing side sometimes you just have to admire the contest. What Are You Drinking With That? The Sunday Roast

If Lamb is on the menu, we’re all about the lighter reds of Burgundy or a nice Oregon Pinot Noir. If beer is preferred, a lighter pale ale or Indian Pale Ale (IPA) would be a lovely accompaniment. As would, now that we think about it, a porter/stout with a bit of fruit influence – Think Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne Riasc Black with its black currant and blackberry notes! Fruit juices (not citrus) cut with sparkling water can also pair nicely with roast lamb. While beef roast would overpower white wines, younger lamb would gamble along the palate easily with a rosé (Mmm, Champagne rosé) or Pinot Gris, or white offering from either Rioja or Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

It must be said that “Irish Cuisine”, as a whole (and in West Kerry in particular) has changed considerably in the past decades. Influences from Scandinavia, the Continent, the Americas, Middle East, and Asia have become as familiar to the family table as bacon and cabbage. Even with such cosmopolitan offerings allowing us to travel without leaving the dining room there is little more satisfying and of greater comfort than a traditional Sunday Roast. “Traditions” are funny things; what may be bog-standard in one home considered an aberration by another. We’ll work under the assumption that “roast” includes a joint of meat or foul which would serve as the centre of the meal (roasted, of course), root vegetables of some sort, and at least one (but who are we kidding?) preparation of the obsequious potato. If the joint is beef, the first question when pairing a beverage would be the cut. Fattier cuts lend themselves to big, tannic red wines like Bordeaux, Zinfandel, Barolo and Burgundy (particularly younger vintages). Leaner roasts allow for the likes of Rioja, Syrah/Shiraz, Rhône, and New World reds. Pale and Amber ales also go nicely with a roast of beef. As would a mug of tea with a good sluice of milk.

Green tea and green tea infused with herbs can also make for a lovely drink with your Sunday lamb. If turkey or chicken are on the menu, well the world is your oyster. White wines, the likes of Sauvignon Blanc (particularly if herbs and/or garlic are involved) Chardonnay (even an oaked Californian) or semi-dry Riesling can’t miss.. Reds – from light to big – go well depending on the preparation of your bird. Pinot Noir, Rhône, Beaujolais, and Chianti Classico come to mind. If you can find a Dolcetto – with its surprisingly soft and fruity texture for such a deep coloured wine – you won’t be disappointed. Sundays are for a bit of relaxing with family and friends. Maybe we linger a bit longer at table. Perhaps we raise a glass to those who are unable to join us or who have left an empty chair in our hearts. Whatever I sit down to Sunday roast with friends, I reflect on Michael Broadbent’s quote, "Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life's most civilized pleasures." Know Your Rights: Fuel Allowance Question Who qualifies for Fuel Allowance and how is it paid? Answer Fuel Allowance is paid under the National Fuel Scheme, operated by the Department of Social Protection. It is intended to help people who are dependent on long-term social welfare payments and who are unable to meet their heating needs. The fuel season usually starts at the end of September and runs for 28 weeks until April of the following year. Under the scheme, a Fuel Allowance of €28.00 per week is generally paid with your social welfare payment. In certain circumstances you can also opt to have the total allowance of €784 paid in two equal lump sums. The first lump sum is normally paid in early October and the second payment is in January. Fuel Allowance is a means-tested payment. If you are getting a non-contributory social welfare payment, you are accepted as satisfying the means test. You must live alone or with someone who also qualifies for the allowance – you cannot get the allowance if you live with someone who does not qualify. Where two or more people living in the same household qualify for the allowance, only one allowance is paid. If your heating needs are met in other ways (for example, if you live in local authority housing where heating is provided), you do not qualify for Fuel Allowance. If you think you are eligible, you should apply immediately because the allowance will not be backdated after the start of the fuel season in October. The application form for Fuel Allowance (NFS1) is available from your local Citizens Information Centre, post office or by texting FORM FUEL followed by your name and address to 51909. To get your Fuel Allowance paid in two lump sums, fill in the Change the Payment Frequency form at least one month before the first lump sum is due. If you apply for the Fuel Allowance after the start of the Fuel Allowance season, it will not be backdated. If you are getting a payment from the Department of Social Protection or a social security payment from a country covered by EU Regulations or a country with which Ireland has a bilateral social security agreement, the Fuel Allowance will be included in your weekly payment. You do not need to reapply for the Fuel Allowance each year as long as

your circumstances remain the same and you continue to get the same social welfare payment. Film Review: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Tom Ó Neachtain ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ is Marvel’s latest origin story, this time focusing on Asian mythology and culture. It follows Shaun, a young man who moves to America to leave his past behind, but is soon tracked down by his immortal warlord father, The Mandarin. After the step backwards that was ‘Black Widow’ earlier this year, Shang-Chi is the first real entry to Marvel’s new phase of films. While this offering doesn’t depart much from their usual fare, it is one of their most original and purely enjoyable films in recent memory.

The action choreography throughout this film is stellar, with good use of martial arts and CGI, leaving no two fight sequences feeling the same. Marvel have been criticised for over-editing their fight scenes, but the long takes during the action sequences in Shang-Chi are very impressive. When compared to most of the MCU’s recent solo efforts, their ‘Spider-Man’ films in particular, with an over reliance on knowledge of the previous entries, this film is only loosely connected to rest of the franchise. The opening montage is very well done, with clever creative concepts and some of the MCU’s most inventive visuals. The greater focus on the villain in this film is nice, with more time being given to character development than most superhero antagonists receive. This characterisation plus a great performance from Tony Leung, make the Mandarin one of the MCU’s best villains yet.
