Farming News SUSTAINABILITY SUPPORT & ADVISORY PROGRAMME It was recently announced that the Department of Agriculture and “Private Industry” will collaborate to establish an ‘Agricultural Sustainability Advisory’ service, employing 30 advisors nationwide. These advisors will oversee the implementation of a Programme aimed at encouraging sustainable farming, while meeting stringent water quality requirements on over 5,000 farms nationwide. The Agricultural Sustainability Support & Advisory Programme (ASSAP) arises from the River Basin Management Plan for Ireland 2018-2021. The plan identified that agriculture is a significant pressure in over 50% of waters at risk of not meeting their ecological target of “good” status by 2027. In accordance with the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/ EC establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy), this Plan sets out a comprehensive programme of measures to enhance the quality of water in Ireland's rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters and groundwater. The objective is to support best farming practice and minimise its impact on water quality. The EPA has identified 190 catchments or ‘areas for action’ across the country where the status of the water is at risk of regressing due to multiple pressures; industry, waste water treatment plants and septic tanks, forestry, agriculture and urban pressures. The ASSAP (Agricultural Sustainability Support and Advisory Programme) will focus its resources on addressing agricultural pressures. The ASSAP is designed to work closely with the farming community in each catchment and is made up of scientists that will assess the streams and advisors who will work closely with farmers providing them with a free and confidential advisory service. There are 20 advisors from Teagasc and 10 advisors from the dairy industry on the programme. Farmers can avail of this service within the ‘areas for action’ on a voluntary basis. At the end of a farm visit the advisor and farmer will agree on where the farmer should best focus improvements or actions, if any are required, on the farm. The practical advice will be designed to ‘break the pathway’ and prevent nutrients from entering water. Examples of such measures include riparian margins along streams, fencing off of cattle access to streams, more suitable siting of troughs and feeders, improved use of fertilisers and slurries – timing and location and rates of application, etc. €20M PAYMENTS FOR YEAR 2 OF THE KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PROGRAMME Payments in respect of Year 2 of the Knowledge Transfer Programme have commenced. Knowledge Transfer Groups have successfully been established across six different sectors, and they continue to play a key role in helping farmers develop the skills and knowledge which will enable them to address sustainability, productivity and competitiveness challenges. In addition to helping to upskill farmers, the Knowledge Transfer group model has also been shown to have significant social benefits for farmers in terms of helping to address issues linked to rural isolation. Given the structure of the Programme, payments are now rolling out on a sector by sector basis over the coming days. In each case, there is an EU regulatory requirement that the payment for farmers in Knowledge Transfer Groups must be passed to farmers via the facilitator of their Knowledge Transfer Group. Thus, individual farmer payments will issue to the facilitator who will then pass this payment to the farmer. Where a farmer has met all the requirements of Year 2 of the scheme, the payment is €750. In cases where a farmer is in two Knowledge Transfer Groups, he/she will receive a total payment of €1,125. TIPS TO HELP AVOID AN ACCIDENT ON THE FARM THIS WINTER Most farm accidents happen during the evening and as the days shorten you should plan your day to avoid working late in the evenings. Plan your day's work. Aim to finish tasks before late afternoon. Before starting in the morning, have a quick check of your farmyard area to see that all is safe. •
Farm Machinery Safety - Machinery will be in use on the major-
12 West Kerry Live
ity of farms on most days - bring in fodder, pushing in bales or blocks of silage. All machines used need to be in a tip top state of repair. Check that the 3 point linkage is secure. Ensure PTO guards are in place. Avoid wearing loose clothing or jackets with dangling drawstrings or cords. • The braking system of the tractor, including the handbrake, needs to be in perfect working condition. • For a clear view, clean windscreen, mirrors, rear window and side windows on the tractor before starting. • Plan to carry out all tasks safely. Avoid rushing any job. Drive machinery slowly in farmyards and over rough ground. Keep back a safe distance from any working machinery. •
Ensure children are supervised at all times.
•
Elderly farmers need to stay clear of any working machinery.
• Be Safe, Be Seen - wear a high visibility vest when working near machinery. Keep clear of backing tractors with shear grabs or bale handlers. Winter Preparation - Plastic covers on fluorescent roof lights should be cleaned where possible and damaged ones replaced. Clean lighting throws out more light. Likewise, check that all floodlights and halogen lamps, both inside and outside, are in full working order. Clean glass and replace bulbs where necessary. • Check feed barriers are secure and all bolts and locks are in working order. Ensure that all doors and gates are hanging safely and can be fastened securely. Old or broken fixtures need to be repaired or replaced. Grease self-locking barriers and sliding doors so that they run smoothly. • All slurry agitation points must be securely covered and not easily opened. • Look at creep gates to verify they can be opened and closed when needed. Ensure that your calving gate is in good working order and safely secured. • Inspect all electrical fittings and replace any that are broken or damaged if required. Don't risk substandard fittings; they could be lethal to both man and animal. • Examine barriers, bars and safety area in bull pens to see that all is in order. Keep stock bull secure at all times. • Make a list of repairs needed and get them done. Don't delay. Do it today. Remember - farm maintenance is a driver of farm efficiency, saves time and labour, reduces problems with livestock and machinery, Most importantly, it helps prevent farm accidents. Feeding Cattle/Calves - Feed beef cattle/calves/weanlings in small groups in open troughs in a concrete or hardcore fenced off area. Turn out stock before feeding and close gates. This will ensure that the person feeding meal is safe and will avoid being crushed when putting out meal for stock. Stock Bulls - At all times, a strong chain should be fitted to the nose ring for safety and to keep better control of the bull. This should prevent the bull from running or charging. When herding, use a vehicle as a mobile sanctuary in case of an attack. Never turn your back to a bull at any time. Bring a fully charged mobile phone with you but remember that a phone is the last resort and all other controls need to be implemented. Treating Animals - When treating any sick or lame calf, ensure animal is safely penned away from their dam. Use a vehicle as a mobile sanctuary if attacked by cow. Dosing Stock - When treating stock, organisation is vital. Work in pairs; know what your work partner is doing/positioned at all times. Wear protective gloves and clothing when using pour-ons or when dipping flock. Any chemical coming in contact with skin should be washed away immediately. With cattle, avoid using dogs; use a stick to guide stock when moving them. Never enter a cattle crush or leave hands on rails when cattle are in it. FATAL FARM ACCIDENT IN CO WATERFORD A 52-year-old man has died following an accident on a farm in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford. It is understood that the man was fatally

injured after falling from a ladder, while fixing a roof near his home. The incident occurred between 9:30am and 4:00pm on Monday, 5th November. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the Gardai have begun an investigation into the accident. Our sympathies go the family of the deceased. UCD RANKED 5TH IN EUROPE FOR AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE Agricultural sciences at University College Dublin has been placed fifth in the world, and 19th globally, according to one world ranking. UCD is the only Irish university to feature in the top 50, in a ranking published by American website US News & World Report, which publishes a list of the best universities and colleges annually. The university was also ranked third in the world for institutions with the most highly cited academic papers. The ranking – which UCD says emphasises academic research and reputation – is based on 13 criteria, including global research reputation, total citations, international collaboration and publications. Prof. Alexander Evans, dean of agricultural sciences at the university, said: “This ranking is an achievement we are very proud of. Looking at the elements that make up the US News ranking, it is noteworthy that UCD’s normalised citation impact, and the number of highly cited papers that are among the top one percent most cited in the area, rank 7th and 3rd in the world respectively,” he added. Over 250 universities all over the world were considered in the ranking, which was compiled by data from the Clarivate Analytics’ Academic Reputation Survey, which profiles the world’s leading universities and research institutions. Prof. Evans said that agricultural science is growing in importance which, he added, makes the accolade for UCD even more significant. “The importance of agricultural science in society is increasing steadily and UCD is pleased to be acknowledged as a world leader in the area,” he added.

Dingle Islay Whiskey Tasting Peter White Every two years an intrepid duo from Dingle visit the Islay Whiskey Festival in Scotland and return with bounty galore for our Dingle members to enjoy and this year is no different, except that this time they were joined in their quest by the legendary cyclist; Dowdy. For those unfamiliar with the style, the small Hebridean island of Islay has been considered the heart of smoky, iodine tinted, phenol-forward malts virtually since the middle ages and continues to hold an almost cult like standing in the hearts of single malt drinkers to this day. For those who are familiar with the style, rest assured that these won’t be your typical Illeachs either. Once a year at the end of May, Islay throws itself a good old-fashioned ceilidh oiled with music, dance, Gàidhlig lessons, dining and specially seasoned masterpieces from each of its proud distilleries. Last May/June, Peter, Finn & Eamonn set out to collect as many of these once-off bottlings as possible to share with our membership and the three of them will walk us through the wonders of the bottles they’ve returned with. So don't miss out on what we’re confident will stand as one of the finest scotch tastings our society has ever run as we toast the achievements of our old Celtic cousins with the finest cuts from their legendary casks. Join IWS Dingle in their final tasting of 2018 where we will get an opportunity to taste one-off whiskeys distilled for the festival and which have been lovingly returned to Dingle for this special occasion. Members are guaranteed never to taste some of these special drams again. Venue: Dick Macks pub When: December 07, 2018 @ 8 pm. Cost: Members €20, Non members €25 NB. No cash accepted on the night.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We have been working on our new website for several months now and the go live date is next Monday, 12th November so please visit www.dinglehub.com next week and you’ll find lots of information on the many projects underway. As I mentioned in the previous issue, one of the projects is a Dingle Peninsula Energy Master Plan to determine how much energy we are currently using and then provide an energy efficiency roadmap for the Peninsula. As a community, we will need to provide information in relation to our current energy usage for this master plan and you will find the link to the survey for this on the front page of our new website. We urge people to get involved to help build an accurate picture of the energy we use today. We held the kick-off meeting for the Young Advisory Board to the Dingle Hub on the weekend of the October Bank Holiday and it certainly confirmed the wealth of young talent that we have always suspected is among our school leavers and recent graduates. We shared future development plans for the Dingle Workhouse with this group along with opportunities that we see for new enterprise and employment in the area. To our delight, they have eagerly taken on the task of sharing this information with everyone and you can expect to hear from them very soon in many different ways! If you would like to know more about this group and get involved, please contact info@dinglehub.com.
Thanks to support from Clár Techspace, who provided the tickets and a bus for the day, we were given the opportunity to take a number of our young animators and coders to ESB Creative TechFest in Google HQ last week. Chicken Chasseur Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School This is a French classic that is probably cooked in every French household on a regular basis. Or ask any trained chef and they will tell you that this came up in their first Christmas exam. The name translates to Hunters Chicken and is perfect for this time of year. It is warming and evoking. At its simplest it is a chicken stew with mushrooms and tarragon. As always use the best chicken or chicken pieces you can find / afford – it makes all the difference. This serves as a taster for our French themed Friday Night Supper Club on Friday 23rd November at 6:30pm. Ingredients 1 whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or use thighs and drumsticks, 30g flour, gluten free if needed 1 onion, cut into small dice
oil knob of butter Method Heat the pan over a medium to high heat. Season the flour and coat the chicken in the flour. Add the oil to the hot pan and add in the chicken and brown on all sides. Remove the chicken and set aside. Give the pan a quick wipe and put back on over medium heat. Add a little oil and the onion and a pinch of salt. Allow these to cook for 5 minutes without browning. Add the garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes. At this stage pour in the wine and allow this to reduce for 2-3 minutes. Now stir in the tomato purée and cook for 2 minutes. Return the chicken pieces to the pan followed by the stock. At this stage I like to brown the mushroom which gives them extra flavour. To do this put a pan over medium to high heat. Once it is hot add a little oil and butter and add in the mushrooms allowing them to brown. Once they have browned add them to the chicken pot, season and allow to cook over medium heat for about 45 minutes until the chicken has cooked through. Taste and season if required. Add the chopped tarragon, parsley and tomato and gently mix through the dish. Bring to the table and serve with a bowl of creamy mash! Enjoy!!!
2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed ½ tsp. tomato purée 1 tomato, peeled and finely diced 500ml good quality chicken stock 100ml white wine 300g button mushrooms, cleaned and chopped handful of tarragon, chopped parsley, chopped salt and pepper

The Amazing Travels of Buckwheat! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
lent substitute to oats for porridge, add some blackberries and apples to the end of cooking for a seasonal breakfast that is as nutritious as it is satisfying! Cooked buckwheat can be a bit mushy and may not look too pretty. If you want to make a pilaf or tabbouleh, forget buckwheat, save your buckwheat for the days you want to indulge in a hearty, comforting meal more appealing to the belly than the eye! Like many grains, buckwheat can be cooked in water at a ratio of 1 cup buckwheat to 2 cups water. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 15 minutes and this will yield roughly 2½ cups of cooked buckwheat. Buckwheat flakes require less cooking time but about the same ratio of liquid to grain. Our buckwheat story would not be complete without mentioning that it is a naturally gluten-free food. With the number of gluten-sensitive people continuing to rise, buckwheat can play an important and tasty role in any gluten-free diet. Available as whole groats, flakes, flour, breads and noodles, buckwheat is becoming increasingly popular here in Ireland. Not surprisingly, as we have one of the highest rates for coeliac disease and gluten intolerance in the world (but that’s another story!). Strict coeliacs need to seek “certified” gluten-free buckwheat to ensure that it is free of cross-contamination from gluten sources that may occur during harvesting, processing, packaging, storage and transportation. For most glutenfree folk though, your regular buckwheat will do. There is no shortage of recipes from all its travels around the globe so you are guaranteed to find a dish, savoury or sweet, to try it out!
Often, the words cereal and grain are used interchangeably. Cereals are the grains that are in the grass family - wheat, rye, rice, millet, oats, barley and many others. There are also pseudograins that are often called grains but are not cereals (confusing!). These include buckwheat, quinoa, and amaranth. People often call them grains, and use them in cooking much like grains, but they are different. Buckwheat is really a fruit seed related to rhubarb and sorrel. Buckwheat was originally cultivated in China as far back as 4000BC and made its way throughout Central Asia, onto Europe, caught a boat to North America and jumped on a wagon to Canada during the middle ages. It remained popular in most areas right into the 20th century and adapted to many different growing climates around the world. Interestingly, in 2006 its global dispersal completed a full circle when buckwheat that was cultivated in Canada found itself back in China! Buckwheat has been so versatile wherever it landed that it has been easily incorporated into traditional dishes of many differing countries. Most notable, in Japan as soba noodles, in France as galettes (crepes) and in Russia as blinis (pancakes). So, what’s so good about Buckwheat that makes everyone want to claim it as their own? Being a seed, buckwheat has a superior protein profile than cereal grass grains in general. It has eight of the nine essential amino acids that are essential to our health but not made in the body. These essential amino acids must be derived from the diet – animal proteins are considered complete proteins because they have all nine, so buckwheat comes very close! Much of the ooh-aah of Buckwheat comes from an astounding mix of heart-friendly nutrients. It is a rich source of magnesium, used in the body to relax blood vessels, improve blood flow and the delivery of nutrients to cells. Also known as Nature’s tranquilizer, magnesium is required for good quality sleep, a calm mind and relaxed muscles, making it very relevant to modern day living. Many of the health benefits of buckwheat are due to its rich supply of flavonoids, particularly rutin and quercetin. These flavonoids extend the effectiveness and function of vitamin C. Rutin has been studied extensively for its ability to strengthen blood vessels and consequently been used as a remedy for varicose veins, broken capillaries and haemorrhoids. Quercetin is most noted for its anti-inflammatory effects, making this pair of flavonoids superheroes when it comes to protecting the heart and circulatory system. The fibre found in buckwheat has also been linked to a lowered risk of developing high cholesterol and high blood pressure, as a result reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Although buckwheat lacks the bran and germ of a true grain, the type of fibre it does contain has equally potent effects within the digestive tract. Not only does it help to regulate transit time through the intestines it also reduces the secretion of bile acids, of which excessive amounts contribute to gallstones. It’s no wonder buckwheat was welcomed wherever it went! Winter is a perfect time to incorporate buckwheat into your diet. Its robust, nutty flavour lends itself well to the fruits and vegetables in season at this time of year. Whole buckwheat groats look like small pyramid-shaped grains and cook similar to rice. Rinse before cooking and be prepared for the grains to swell into a soft, mushy texture. They make an excel20 West Kerry Live

West Kerry Tractor Run The inaugural Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne/West Kerry Tractor Run will take place on Sunday the 25th November. The aim of this event is to raise awareness and funds for local and Irish charities. Gairdín Mhuire Day Care Centre, Dingle and The Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA) have been chosen by the committee to be the benefactors of proceeds from this years’ event as they are charities very close to the hearts of event organisers, Seamus Devane and John P. O’ Sullivan. Gairdín Mhuire Day Care Centre Green Street, Dingle is a centre specifically designed with the needs of Chorca Dhuibhne’s elderly in mind, providing a support mechanism to address the social and medical requirements of their clients. It is a fantastic amenity which provides clients with free transport, subsidised meals and activities in addition to access to healthcare professionals such as nurses, physiotherapists and chiropodists. Equally important is the social outlet it provides for so many individuals who would otherwise be very isolated in our rural community. ILFA (www.ilfa.ie) was founded to provide support and act as a source of information for patients and families living with idiopathic lung fibrosis (a progressive and terminal condition, the cause of which has not yet been identified. There is no cure though some patients may be suitable for a lung transplant). The association also supports research into the condition in addition to promoting awareness and highlighting the importance of organ donation. It is funded solely by donations from the public. There are many ways to support the event, even if you don’t have a tractor! You can donate via the Go Fund Me page on www.gofundme.com/ west-kerry-tractor-run. Volunteers will hold a bucket collection at various locations in Dingle town on Saturday 24th of November and that evening there will be an auction and raffle with some very covetable prizes during an evening of ceol and craic in The Marina Inn (further details will be published on Facebook, in local papers and on local radio). All road worthy insured tractors are welcome to take in the tractor run on Sunday 25th November (donations welcome in lieu of registration fee; Drivers only, no passengers). The run will begin at the former fish farm in Lios Póil at 1pm sharp (registration will begin at 12pm) and follow a route through Dingle town to Ventry and back to Dingle via Rathinane and Baile na nÁith. We would like to raise as much as possible for our two worthy charities and would be extremely thankful for any sponsorship or donations contributed to this event. However, we would urge anyone who is unable to give financially to contribute by helping to raise awareness and promote the work of these two fantastic charities. This can be done by • Signing up for a donor card (Text Donor to 50050 to order a card, download the app or tick the box on your driver’s licence) and more importantly by discussing organ donation with your family and friends #havethechat. • Familiarising yourself with the amenities, supports and services provided at Gairdín Mhuire and encouraging family, neighbours and friends that you feel could benefit to make use of the centre. An exhibition of new paintings by Eamon Regan, Tom Rickman and Heidi Wickham at The Greenlane Gallery Dingle until the 23rd of November ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ is an exhibition that sees artists Eamon Regan, Tom Rickman and Heidi Wickham mimic Sara Teasdale’s six rhyming couplets. A delicate, lyrical poem, it describes nature's transcendence over man's devastations, and speaks of the irony that man’s progress has brought to modern society; both its advancements and destruction. While Teasdale imagines a time when mankind has “perished utterly” she moves directly to a calm, confident prediction of “soft rains”, and simply asserts that nature will prevail and it will neither “care” nor “mind” about the destruction of mankind. In this exhibition the artists celebrate Mother Nature’s enduring strength and her inherent beauty. Placing the spectacular Dingle peninsula forefront, each pay homage to her natural life force and to the many ordinary and extraordinary aspects of primal life. In paired back architectural paintings Eamon explores humble pre-modern dwellings that resonate a sense of home and place. Tom wonders at our awe inspiring landscape and transforms place into something that goes beyond the visual in a series of atmospheric seascapes, and Heidi captures our indigenous animals as totemic worldly beings. Each exhibiting artist’s work instils a sense of Mother Nature’s tranquil essence. They illustrate the importance of sustaining our landscape, heritage and animal life, emphasising an entirety that is uniquely special and which continues to prevail, but reminding us too that –
‘Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly;

The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2018 was officially launched on Friday, October 26th in Lee Strand in Tralee. The awards are held for youths between the ages of thirteen and twenty one years and recognise the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry. The awards will be presented at a celebratory awards ceremony in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, January 25th, 2019. This year twenty Merit Awards will be presented to individuals who have made a positive contribution to their community and make it a better place to live. A Group Award will also be presented to groups of two or more people who have made an impact to their community. The Special Achievement Award will be presented to an individual who has overcome difficult circumstances, has defied all the odds and whose commitment deserves recognition. A Community Safety Award will be presented to an individual who through crime prevention or a safety initiative/innovation has made their community a safer place to live. The Overall Winner of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement 2018 will also be presented. Speaking at the launch Chief Superintendent Tom Myers stated “An Garda Síochána are delighted to be associated with the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. We often underestimate the worth of our youth who are both innovative and important to our future. It is important to recognise their excellence in the area of sports, arts, culture, charities or caring for a relative or friend. The awards have a positive effect on our wider community and I would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Lee Strand for their continued sponsorship and support over the past 21 years.” John O’Sullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand stated “Lee Strand has a strong commitment to supporting initiatives within the local community and we are delighted to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards since 1998. The awards provide a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the young people of Kerry, who have made a positive impact within their local community.” The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday, December 7th, 2018. Any member of the public can nominate a young person whom they feel has made a contribution to their local area. Nominations are accepted from individuals, community and voluntary groups, schools and youth clubs/organisation. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges who are community volunteers from around the county under the chairmanship of Chief Superintendent Tom Myers, An Garda Síochána. Nominations are available from any Garda Station in Kerry; K.D.Y.S. Office in Tralee, Killarney and Listowel or by contacting Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102311. Hope Guatamala Women put final touch on Hope Guatamala's "Casa de Salud "- (House of Health) in San Pedro, Guatemala. Up to now pregnant women had to walk up to 60km through the mountains to the next hospital. Often they lost their unborn children. Hope Guatemala is convinced that the mortality rate of the unborn children in San Pedro and the surrounding villages will drop because midwives can operate from the "Casa de Salud " from now on. The money for the medicine, tables and chairs was donated by a German family trust to support the work of Hope Guatemala/Ireland and sister organisation Nuevo Dia/Germany Hope Guatemala is a Ventry based charity that has been active at a grassroots level in Guatemala.

The March Of Improvement
Tralee Chronicle & Killarney Echo - July 6th 1869 Poor Dingle! - It was rich Dingle once. That was in the good old - “barbarous” days when plenty of people, and plenty of bustle, and plenty of business of all kinds was considered anything but “a great nuisance” by the numerous gentry who lived in the town, loved it and fostered it. The Dingle linen trade has been done to death. “Box and Trip” no longer haunt a defunct linen hall. The shuttle is silent - the loom destroyed - the hands that laboured there ply their task far away, where there’s wealth and welcome for honest labour. The thousands that thronged the streets on fair and market days - who bargained and sold, treated and courted, frisked and frolicked, parted with pounds as freely as with pence, had plenty for themselves and plenty for others, were joked with by the squire, were smiled on by the lady, were petted by the lord - where are they all? “They left the festal hearth and all, They pine afar from us in alien climes. Oh, who shall bring them back to us once more? Who shall restore Life’s fairy floral times?” Restore the palmy days of Dingle indeed! Restore labour, trade, and industry to a flourishing state in the next town to America - what an idea! Throw life into the fishery - vigour into the commerce bustle into the agriculture - animation into the trade and industry of the place in the year of grace, 1869 - who could think of it? Get up a linen or woolen factory, establish wharfs and docks, increase the employment of labour, treble the thriving population of the town and country - what a vulgar and very Irish notion! Turn your back on the place - ignore it - abolish it - “stamp it out” as a plague and a nuisance - As the men and women were banished before in throngs, as worthless - weed out more of the “dross” - put the little trade and business left on a Banting system - bleed it, thin it, starve it; and where “ye Dingle-i-couch” stood - with its castles, its halls, its sovereign, its corporation, its thrift, its fame, its pomp,
its power, its circumstance, there will soon be for the historian of the 20th century an improved tale to tell of West Kerry like what Macauley had to tell of another part of the county - ie: “ during the greater part of the century this paradise was as little known as Spitzbergin or Greenland.” If this prospect is to be realised, isn’t it promising to find that, just now, all the powers of the place are solemnly engaged on one great issue: how far cattle, cows, horses, pigs, butter, potatoes, fish, meat and men should be removed, so as not to be “an obstructive nuisance from the doors of a very respectable number of its inhabitants:. Only one thing is necessary to cause Dingle to flourish according to this great modern idea. Remove all markets to the Brewery and shut up two thirds of the shops. Leave the rest to time. What would Ulster be, if Londonderry or Belfast were “improved” out of existence in this style - what would Lancashire be, if such principles were applied to Manchester and Liverpool? In looking across the channel, we must reverse our decision. Macauley comparing the England of the 17th century with the §England of today says: “Many thousands of square miles which are now corn-land and meadow, intersected by green hedgerows, and dotted with villages and pleasant country seats, would appear as moors overgrown with furze or fens abandoned to wild ducks, we should see straggling huts built of mud and covered with thatch, where we now see manufacturing towns and seaports renowned to the farthest ends of the world” Is Kerry a part of the empire thus spoken of? Mr. Talbot Christie presented to shut up an old road to “improve” Ardfert to the other side of a new road. Mr. Crosbie’s Ardfert like Mark Tapley’s new Eden looked rather jolly - on paper. Mark and his master journeying south, found Eden a swamp, and passing from the pen and ink sketch of a new city of St. Brandon to the “city” itself - we looked for it and found ruins on one side and waste on the other. Remove the market to the Brewery field say the Dingle Reformers, and you shall see the millennium. A civilised country having expelled its people and its trade, can dispense with such a “nuisance” as a town. So sounds the modern march of “improvement”.

Mostly when people go over on their ankle they just strain the surrounding muscles and ligaments. If you tear(as opposed to strain) the ligaments in the ankle, usually you will hear a massive crack like a tree branch breaking. Probably your biggest problem with an ankle injury is the amount of swelling that occurs. Even with a small twist there can be considerable swelling which slows recovery. It is important to limit that swelling, so as soon as the injury happens gently compress the area, ice it and rest it. Often professional clubs will use a cold compression boot for this purpose. Non steroid anti-inflammatories need to be taken as soon as possible, unless they don’t agree with you. The more you can keep that swelling down, the faster the

recovery. Physio for an ankle sprain involves 1. Massage to get down the inflammation/ swelling and aid repair of any traumatized supporting muscles 2. Mobilization’s of the ankle and foot 3. A progressive rehab program. Treatments rarely takes more than 2 or 3 sessions. A lot of the recovery process is rehab done by the client themselves. Even with ligament tears, fortunately there are many supporting ligaments in the ankle, so with only one or two tearing it is still possible to make a full recovery without surgery. I do however recommend wearing an ASO ankle brace during sporting activities thereafter so as not to have a recurrence of the injury.
Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Is dócha go mbeidh toradh togchán idir –théarma Mheiriceá ar eolas agat agus tú ag léamh an ailt seo. Bhíodar ag bhótáil ar an Máirt gcás ionadaithe don Seanad agus Tigh na n-Ionadaithe- leath dos na suíocháin mar is gnáth sa togháin. Tá an t-Uachtarán Trump ar an mbóthar de ló agus d’oíche. Is léir gur ionadaíocht don tSeanad is mó atá ar a aigne mar go bhfuil an tuairim ann go mbeidh Tigh na nIonadaithe thar n-ais ag na Daonlathaigh. Tá Óbáma ar a chroí díchill ag iarraidh an bonn a bhaint ó Trump rud a fheadfadh tárlú ach déarfainn ná tarlóidh an greadadh san in aon chor. Caint agus bleadar is mó a bhí ag Obama. Tá poist ina mór mhílte cruthaithe ins gach cúinne do Mheirice ag Trump. Conas mar bheidh? Déarfainn go mbeidh an lá leis na Poblachtánaigh i gcás an tSeanaid agus an dara céann idir dhá cheann na meá. Is mór a t-amadán/óinseach an cearrbhach a chuirfeadh ‘leatfaine’ ar aon duine acu. Ceapann scata mar a deir an t-amhrán/dán an Chonchúraigh gur comónta é Trump agus nár cheart a bheidh ag cur vótai amú ag tacú leis ‘mar tá sé comónta’. An é go bhfuil ón bpobal go mbeadh doras oscailte ag Meiriceá do gach gioblachán, fear gaisce agus scrios a ghabhann an tslí. Cinnte tá an phoilitíocht sa Stáit Aontaithe éagsúil go mór ó shaol poilitúil atá ‘ge baile againn. Beidh an tromlach ag Trúmp sa toghhán don Seanad agus tharlódh go mbeadh Tigh na n –Ionadaithe cupla suíochán sa bhreis ar na Poblachtánaigh.

Brexit Tá mór liútar léatar sa bhaile againn a bhuíochas do Bhrexit. Níl aon fhonn ar Sasana aon chúlú a dhéanamh i gcás na Sé Chontae.Tá siad á rá inniu go mbeadh an leagan amach atá a mholadh ag Sasana, go mbeadh an scéal céanna sa treis i gcás gach ball-stát don AE. Slí i seo le sleamhnú amach as an AE agus Éire a bheidh dtaoibh le crua theora. Fan go bfeicir. Tá súil agam nách bhfuil an dream seo againne ag teacht le bladar na dTórathe a fhágfadh Éire ar an gcosán cam. Caid Ní raibh an rian don ádh ar pheilidóirí an Daingin in aghaid na gCrócach. Faireadh go maith muintir Geaney agus bhris san cnámh droma an Daingin. Bhí An SúilleabhánachTomás, ar fheabhas. Má bhuaileann na Crócaigh leis an nDaingean arís beidh malairt scéil againn. Sa chomórtas idirmheánach a bheidh an Ghaeltachht an bhliain seo chugainn. Fén am sin beidh an dara páirc imeartha réidh ach is dócha go gcaithear tamall a thabhairt don ngort cneasú.

Oireachtas. An baice ach go raibh Tomás ó Lúing go láidir ar na builigh mar go dtug sé an lá leis i gcomórtas na Scéalaíochta. Fág fé é. Ard fear. Is diail an éirim aisteóireachta atá i sliocht Dalby, tofa ar fad. An babhta seo bhí clann Uí Chinnéide go láidir ar na builg. Dhein Ceaití Bheildún agus Máirín Ui Shé a ngaiscí féin i réimse na scríobhnóireachta. Beidh liosta iomlán agam díbh ar ball mar ná beadh sé cóir ná ceart aon bhuaiteóir a fhágaint gan aitheantas. Is i mBéal Feirste is dóigh liom a bheidh Oireachtas na bliana seo chugainn agus i gConamara ina dhiaidh sin. Caithfear a rá go raibh Cill Airne ar fheabhas. Bhí an dá Óstán Gleann an Iolair agus an Brehon déanta don gcúram. Reachtáileadh cúpla comórtas thuas fén mbaile. Bhuaidh an craoltóír Sláine Ní Chathalláin an comórtas, Óráidíocht, agus 200 E agus thar aon ní eile bhí sí go diail ar fad ag cur na n-amharánaithe i láthair comórtas na bhfear. Bhí gach focal ‘na sheasamh agus breá síodúil soiléir. Ní ró-mhinic a cloistear a leithéid. Sí Máire Ní Chéilleachair a bhuaidh comórtas Chorn Uí Riada i mbliana. TV Series Review The Haunting of Hill House Pierce Hoare The Haunting of Hill House is an original Netflix horror series loosely based on a book of the same name. The show is half set in the 1980’s and in the modern day as it follows the Crain family as both children and adults. The child half shows how the horrors of Hill House affected them and the adult half shows how they live with the fears of their childhood. The horror in the show is mostly psychological, with the oldest simply assuming the cause is mental illness, a theme which is also explored in the show. The acting in the show is superb, with the exception of some of the child actors who are not quite as good as their adult counterparts. Some of the computer effects in the show can be a bit waxy but the dark lighting covers it up well. As for the practical effects, they are some of the best I’ve seen on a Netflix show. The opening theme is also very effective at setting the tone, with the piano and violin score playing across the destruction of marble statues. As for the camerawork, there is not much to say except it has some well used long takes. While I enjoyed the show thoroughly, I would be against the idea of a second season as the end of the first seemed to wrap things up perfectly in my opinion. If you like horror movies then this would be a good netflix series for you, but be warned it can be a heavy with the mental illness aspect.

Mise an Mac San ag cuimhneamh ar an
Athair Peadar Ó Laoghaire curtha in eagar ag Éilís Uí Bhriain agus Pat O’Brien ‘Ba cheannródaí ar mhórán slite é an tAthair Peadar; scríobh sé an chéad dráma agus an chéad úrscéal riamh i nGaeilge. Níor chuir an tOllamh Brian Ó Cuív fiacal ann maidir leis an éacht déanta ag an sagart beag folt-liath ó Mhá Chromtha: Is dócha ná beadh aon nualitríocht ar fónamh sa Ghaeilge anois againn mara mbeadh a dhaingne a sheasaimh an tAthair Peadar an fód ar son na Gaeilge beo agus a dhíograise a sholáthraigh sé ábhar léitheoireachta inti. ... Agus a chomóradh céad bliain i 2020, is meabhrú tráthúil é an leabhar seo ar fhear fíor-shuimiúil. Is machnamh é freisin ar conas an dá thráigh a fhreastal idir an dearcadh maoithneach air a bhí i réim tráth agus an dearcadh searbh air atá tagtha ina áit ó shin. Agus sinn ag cuimhneamh ar an Athair Peadar, an féidir é a chomóradh i slí a thugann cothrom na Féinne don fhear féin agus lucht a cháinte?’ - Sciob Sceab An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis
